Speaker 1Hey, this is Amy. And this is Lindsey. And this is Girl Talk Live. We are so pumped that you're here with us as we unpack how being a girl and being a mom is the best when you're
Speaker 2walking and talking with Jesus every day and seeking first His kingdom and His righteousness. So grab your Bible and let's get started.
Speaker 1Welcome to Girl Talk. This is the best because, well, we're together and we're outside and we're on point five. And it's fall, which is what we've said the last like three times. But now it actually, actually is. It's actually getting cooler. We can be outside. Yes. We carved the pumpkins. So I don't know if you've done that yet, but you definitely should. Roasted some. We did a lot of fall. Like we checked off a wall.
Speaker 2We did a lot of things last night. We did pumpkins yesterday and the pumpkin bread.
Speaker 1So good. Gluten free. Yes. And the yummy pumpkin seeds.
Speaker 2Oh yeah. The pumpkin seeds.
Speaker 1Those are good. Yeah. Good job. Did you like them? Yeah. I love pumpkin seeds.
Speaker 2Good. Did she bring me all of them? Did you get any? No. Apparently she brought me all of them. Oh, I got like, she was like, do you want to try them?
Speaker 1And she gave me like two and then I didn't see him again. Did he eat all of them? No. Good job. Of course they pull up right when we start. It's perfect. All right. So this is Girl Talk Live. Yes. Always live. Always. You never know what you're going to get. It's so exciting. And you can't get away from anything
Speaker 2because there's so many of us.
Speaker 1Yeah. But that's what I've always prayed for. Yeah. So I was thinking about this morning. We have paparazzis. Okay. So I was thinking about, well, yeah, I was listening to a sermon and then I was thinking about the thing, you know. Oh, welcome to Girl Talk.
Speaker 2Is somebody behind us? What did she look over there for?
Speaker 1I didn't look back there. You did. After you did. Okay. So. Sorry. I learned about my gland, aren't you? Okay. So I was thinking about that thing, you know, that people say and they say like, if all your prayers were answered, would your life be better? Or would your life be better? Or would everyone else's life be better? Ooh. And then it was also talking about if we had a scroll, like if we got to heaven and God was like, oh yeah, by the way, like here's just a, like a look back. On like all the things you prayed and like how your prayer life like changed your life. He was like, first of all, like, would your life or
Speaker 2change others lives?
Speaker 1Well, just like impacted the kingdom. And he was saying like, first, like, would you even have anything? Like, how many prayers would you get back? And then he was like, and what would be the subject of the majority of them? So that was like, kind of cool just to think about like, how we pray, what we pray, when we pray and all of those things. Because, you know, me, I just think a lot. And I don't necessarily like, I feel like I'm always thinking and like having conversations with the Holy Spirit in my mind. But like, I'm not necessarily like, dear God, let me like, pray all of this. And then like, which I know that's not just prayer. But like, I'm not always like super intentional the way I should be like to like, be in a prayer for my prayerful mindset, because I'm just thinking. about it all the time. More than like, you know, so that's why you should just say everything, you know.
Speaker 2Well, it's a good point what you've said, because what, you know, a book that I read a long time ago that has kind of resurfaced and in my small group community is the circle maker. And you know, that was one of the books that really inspired me to really go bigger with my dreams and hopes and everything. It's so good. You should read it. By Mark Batterson, Pastor Mark Batterson in Washington, he's doing great things over there. But he said, prayers are prophecies. They are the best predictor of your spiritual future. Who you become is determined by how you pray. And ultimately, the transcript of your prayers becomes the script of your life. And I think that's so true, because, you know, James tells us our words are powerful, they have the ability to spark fire. You know, to set a forest ablaze, and they have the power of life and death. So what we say matters, and what we pray matters. And so a long time ago, before I had a mentor before I really, you know, all the Lord was always tugging at my heart, but I didn't really get more of him until I made intentional time every morning for him. And it was in those. In that early, those early years, that he used different book sources, which were really just full of scriptures, to teach me how to pray, because I would just get up in the morning, and I couldn't think and I still can't really think in the morning, I'm just, I know I've got to get going, I got to get moving and things have to be done. And so I would just read those scriptures, and in those prayers, and after a while, I just noticed that I was changing, you know, I was changing. And, and so I think, you know, 10 years later, I realized that was because it's scripture. And so that's why I'm doing what I do today. And that's why we're talking about it. And because I didn't, I didn't have just a one book telling me how to pray, I was just reading scriptures that everybody had already put together. And of course, just leaning into the Lord, and then he taught me, but you'll never have, you'll never
Speaker 1fail to have his cooperation, as long as he's there. He has yours.
Speaker 2That is so true. That's what I've always said, just show up, just show up and read his words. And, you know, and the angels work on your behalf. Yes, yes, they do. What is that verse?
Speaker 1Um, it's Psalm 104.30.
Speaker 2What? 103.20. 103.20. It's our favorite. It's part of our favorite. 103.20. And which, you know, copies, you said 104. Sorry. But it copies. It copies Ephesians 3.20. But, okay, so this is, this is kind of like point one of why it's so important to pray scripture. Point one. Um, yeah, so what's the title of today? For all of those of you who are taking notes, our title today is How to Pray. How, how do we pray? How to pray. Oh, how to pray. Um, we skipped this. Oh, no. You know a really important thing? Um, Jesus. Always. Pray out loud. Brownies and fruit.
Speaker 1Mm-mm. Look, I wrote it down. It came back to my mind. Fruit or brownies. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Fruit or brownies. Mm-hmm. I have a point. Okay. But you have, you can say your first point first.
Speaker 2I was just going to say it's important to pray out loud.
Speaker 1Oh, yes, this comes with my fruit and brownies. Okay. Okay, so I was thinking, oh, you're going to make fun of me again.
Speaker 2No. But. Because I'm at the point where I just really love the brownies these days. Well, okay. so I probably shouldn't talk about that it's
Speaker 1the power of our words you know we talk about that we talk about the power of our prayers and so if you think about it like you should only like you know I've been told this because I'm really bad at not doing this but you should only speak good obviously of other people that's what everyone always says otherwise it's considered slander one thing that I don't think that we are told very often is that we should always speak good about ourselves and we should never say anything negative out loud about ourselves because then it just gives it the enemy territory
Speaker 2and some people talk like that and they think it's like oh well I'm humble so I'm gonna talk that way about myself but it's really it's not good because
Speaker 1you're you are a reflection of Christ and if you're talking bad about yourself you're ultimately talking about about God and who he created you to be but you're also giving the enemy something to fight you with because you're saying it out loud which is why you're saying it out loud we should only speak truth and only speak scripture and pray out loud and pray scripture and only pray truth and don't say out loud like the lies or anything like that in your head so that's why fruit or brownies because I mean the
Speaker 2brownies have the the bad sugar in them that too much over time hurts us yeah so I just fruit was made for us to be good it's a good point yeah good point so only speak well of yourself and others and like the psalm says you should only speak truth and only speak scripture and pray out loud and pray scripture and only pray truth and don't say out loud like the lies or anything like that in your head so that's why fruit or brownies because I mean the brownies have the bad sugar in them that too much over time hurts us yeah so I just fruit was made for us to be good it's a good point yeah good point so only speak well of yourself and others and like the psalm says say or is it paul it's probably paul that said encourage each other with psalms hymns and spiritual
Speaker 1songs yeah because I've been kind of researching reading studying praying a lot about there's a lot going on with the 18 year old to 23 year old age group right now and one of the things I was reading on like how to encourage them and really just for all of us like as Christians we shouldn't talk bad about really anything because we're and shaping the mindset of the people under us. have people younger than us and so the more we talk bad about our surroundings and what's going on in the world instead of speaking god's word into what is happening then we're just shaping the minds of people that are watching us and listening to us so that goes for parents or grandparents or just if you're older girls or even yeah if you're around friends you don't even have to be older than them but like people are listening to what you're saying because you're a christian
Speaker 2and your words are painting a picture for someone else to see yeah so that's why it's also really important that not to spread what you hear is going on yeah um unless you are a mom and you're talking to someone younger than you with a point yeah you know i mean if you want to use it as a teaching moment like i do that a lot you know i point out certain situations and i talk to my girls about them and i use them to teach i try not to use a lot of names um again because i don't want to mar their um visions of those or those image the image of those other people because we're all supposed to um hope for the best in others yeah so that's
Speaker 1ephesians 4 29 um let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouth but only that what is for building up of others so i think it's like so that they yeah and don't grieve god's spirit that's the next thing you
Speaker 2know if we stop and think about it for a second um when we talk about other people and they're either wrong choices or their sin or whatever or just if we're just critical of them because we don't like something about them we are grieving their daddy and he sees us all he he knows everything about all of us he knows what happened yeah but he loves them so much also that he gave their son gave his son for them and so when we sit and talk about other people we're talking about his children and that's what grieves his heart because he's like well i know that about them but how are you gonna
Speaker 1help them yeah yeah i saw something that said instead of talking about other people you should talk to them about jesus and then also um the psalm may the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight oh lord my strength and my redeemer i don't know what psalm that is which one is it
Speaker 2psalm 18 no i think it's um i think it's a closing doxology okay yeah i
Speaker 1thought of those two verses just going along with yeah always speaking truth about ourselves and others and about god and building up others because
Speaker 2because our words are powerful yeah which leads to our prayers needing to be out loud and there are a lot of times you can't pray out loud which you know we understand that you can't sit and just start praying out loud in your classroom or you know wherever but when you are praying when you go in your quiet place and you are having your time with the lord we want you to understand that um your prayers you know you're reading your bible but don't stop there like turn your bible into your prayers because what i just said a minute ago is the transcript of your prayers becomes the script of your life and so that brings me back to how i used to pray um in the beginning when i first started my relationship with the lord which was i mean my my deep you know when i started walking with him really every day spending time with him because um you know i've been a yo-yo christian since i was six years old but i didn't really really dig in to the lord and into his word until um probably 2005 maybe a few years earlier but so when i would see these books and i would see verses in these books i was like oh that's good that really i really like that so i would start writing them on note cards and and then in the morning instead of just going through the books i would go through the note cards and i would literally pray every note card and here's the stack well there are a few extras in there but all these um 2005 2010 2011 16 but these are the the things that have made me who i am today by god's grace and his word and holy spirit because um psalm 103 20 is the verse that says where'd it go psalm 103 20 says praise the lord you his angels you mighty ones who do his bidding who obey his word so when we're putting his word out there that's when the angels go to work you know because god has already put his word out here for us and he says his word will not return void and so it's not i mean he could be giving new commands i'm not going to say what god's doing and what not god's not doing but he has given a lot of commands in his word already and and he has given it to us to use as a roadmap for our lives and you know for our lives and for our lives and for our lives also how to pray and and so when we pray his word the angels go to work holy spirit goes to work in us we've got holy spirit moving through us we've said this over and over and over in every video because it's true we want you to know that um and then also psalm 119 11 says i have hidden your word in my heart so that i will not sin against you and so i didn't i didn't memorize all these like at one time but i was so hungry that and as i was saying them over and over every day um you know it got to the point where i knew how to say it just they rolled off my tongue because i was not necessarily studying them every day but i was actually breathing them and living them every day and um and then when i was in a hard situation then i knew i knew what i could do i knew what god's said about that situation i knew what he said about me in that situation so those were really
Speaker 1helpful i was thinking about when you said like not like we're not talking about praying like out loud in front of people and how matthew 6 is talking about um not praying so that you can be heard so that's not what we're talking about like we're definitely not talking about like you should always raise your hand when someone says this anyone want to pray so that you can be the one praying and you can be the one seen and like make sure you pray at least five minutes long and make sure you like say every single person and like everything that they've ever done and make sure you get all the gossip like in the prayer so that it's like it's shadowed in the prayer and like all that like that's definitely not what we're talking about and we'll talk about in a couple weeks that those verses go into like well it says don't pray like the hypocrites don't be like them their father knows the things you need before you ask and then it goes into the lord's prayer which is one of my favorite prayers to pray and break down and just look at all that and so definitely just wanted to throw that scripture out there to back up what you were saying because it's definitely not we're not saying like go be the one that everyone's listening to while you pray because that's not the same as praying scripture out loud and like for for this purpose
Speaker 2and we've we've said that from the beginning yeah like this is about your relationship with god the father through jesus and with holy spirit to change you to make you become more like jesus so that he can be glorified in your life by your actions and love towards others so this is not about you know being the know-it-all in front of everybody and quoting every scripture and you know because you've learned them all but this is just saying god's going to use his word to change us you know he sent jesus so that people could see who he was and his character so people would know that he wasn't just an angry god but that he was kind and compassionate and so he wants to use his word to change us into that too and again first john says in the word in the beginning was the word and the word was with god and the word was god so so this is god getting into us when we say these prayers over and over and over every day so in hebrews 4 12 is the verse that says for the word of god is living and active and and then he also says in james 1 22 do not merely listen to the word but do what it says okay and we've talked about that too it's hard to do that if we do not have more of god's grace empowering us through his holy spirit to change us and another way to make that happen is by putting his word in you every day um and and this is not just me saying do this because i did it and it worked and it can work for you too it's not just me saying that um the old testament in deuteronomy 11 18 god is giving his people the commandment fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds he says put them on the doorpost talk about them when you go in and out talk them talk about them when you're walking down the road with your children he told us from the beginning get this get my word in your heart and then and so ultimately what we're doing which is what paul talks about um in romans i had to remember which which book was it um paul talked about in Romans he says set your mind on what the spirit desires okay so that is why we're talking about this that's how it all circles together when we look at scripture as a whole and why we do what we do because we are disciples of Christ we're not just rule followers it is a relationship and we have to look at his word as a whole and and how that changes
Speaker 1us yeah I was thinking about um well Jeremiah 29 12 we always talk about that but it really tells us like when we come to him with our full heart like he's going to listen so again like we're not just saying like go and read scripture so that you can hear it and it can be read over you and you can feel it but like really like God's listening whether we're saying it out loud or not like God's there um but I was thinking about David and I mean all throughout Psalm he he says so many times like he cried out he pleaded but um he pleaded but in Psalm 142 it's a cry of distress but he just says I cry aloud to the Lord I plead aloud to the Lord for mercy and it just is a good reminder just to see the people in the Bible like they prayed out loud and like they know God heard them and they were coming to him and really it gets to the point where like you know when you need help like you cry out like you're either crying out loud or you're literally like screaming out loud like if you if you're in a situation where it's not necessarily when you need help but like in any situation we know like our human instinct is to make noise like we're not just gonna sit and like I mean when when an eight-year-old needs milk she's gonna just be like hey can you get me some milk you know so you know when we need something when we want something when we want to be close to someone like you don't just sit and like think about think about them like you know and so that's just kind of a human like a very small human example of just mm-hmm it's our instinct to cry out loud mm-hmm
Speaker 2um I wanted to take just a couple of things just ones because you know I wasn't perfect when I first started this journey with Jesus and showed me how imperfect I was and he still does I'm not saying I'm perfect now but um but as I found different verses I would um sit and pray them like I said and I just wanted to give y'all a couple examples a couple of examples because I know that y'all are dealing with a lot and and some of us aren't growing up with parents sitting down and talking to us saying hey I know you're struggling with this here's a verse to help you through that um so I have just a couple that I wanted to share but y'all all these came from my concordance in the back of my Bible and so if you turn back here like most all of us are pretty selfish and we want what we want when we want it and we get mad if we don't get it pretty soon and that is called um selfishness so it manifests itself as anger sometimes manipulation all those things so you know something you can find in in the back of the your Bible or in if you don't have one with a concordance you know you can look in what Bible hub I know is one where you can do a word study um but anger so if you turn to anger back here it says Proverbs 15:1 but a harsh word stirs up anger Proverbs 29:11 says a fool gives full vent to his anger so what I would do is write those things down and I would say Lord please do not let me vent my anger I don't want to be a fool please don't let me vent my anger um John 4:2 says slow to speak and slow to become angry for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires and so you stop and you take that verse and you say oh I want the righteous life that God desires so I need to be quick to listen and slow to speak Lord please take my anger and give me your peace and your patience that will make me quick to listen and slow to speak okay and that's the exchange that we were talking about last week when we said if you're coming into prayer and all you do is vent everything and you're like just fix them you know Lord why they keep doing this well he's not gonna be like I know they're horrible he's gonna say well how did you how did you handle the situation did you just get mad about it because you didn't get what you want or were you quick to listen and slow to speak and slow to become angry because I want he said I always told my children I'm going to talk to them too but what I want for you because I'm talking to you right now is I want you to do what you're supposed to do and and so you can have this righteous life because what is Matthew 6:33 seeking first God's kingdom and his righteousness see first his kingdom his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given unto you he's like you might not have what you want in the moment but it's not the moment that matters it is it's the lifetime it's at the end of your lifetime you're going to get to that white throne judgment and the Lord's going to say what'd you do and you can say I prayed that prayer and I did and it was so hard but I I did Holy Spirit by your grace by your power in me I was slow to speak I was quick to listen and slow to speak and slow to become angry and why because the wisdom where'd it go because the wisdom remember we don't want to be wise in our own eyes we want to have the wisdom that comes from the Lord the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure then peace loving and considerate and submissive and full of mercy and good fruit impartial and sincere peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest
