All of his internet stuff is so funny. Yes. Um, and Kirstie Alley, too, not over that, who played them all. And it reminded me of, um, in Maddie Secret. Yes. Yes. I think. Like, Kirstie Alley died again. Oh, no. I mean, in the sex in the city she did, oh shit, she's totally dead. Do not get that, and that is, that's on don't just anything that comes out of her mouth. And I have to assume it was, but John Early, a mover first. John Early is in hurt body, and you're hard to impress. And that is true. - Strict. - Yeah, it was about that, five, six, seven, eight. You better. Yeah, I was like, anyway, I just felt like a very specific callback to like gay internet lore that felt really important to me. Low showgirls, perfect film, no notes. But yeah, anyway, I just love that scene. - I want to talk about John Early's playing Maddie. - Yes. - Because for a moment I was like, I couldn't tell, is he in drag? Is this part of the character? - Yeah, yeah. - But I think he plays Maddie with like such open-hearted authenticity. And she really is like my least favorite person, like least favorite type of person in life who's like just nice girl. But he plays with like such tenderness that I really, like you just really empathize with her. And you really like want her to succeed. And you feel how much she's trying, how much she wants to like provide and show up for the people in her life. - Yeah. - And I thought it was just like really wonderful. - Yeah, and I also love the element of just like, when the like competitive female shop thing came up, I immediately thought of one of Hunter's favorite topics, Molly, Baz, Baz versus Allison Roman. - Let me say this, it's not versus. - Oh, but they don't follow each other. - Oh. - And I mean, I think you're either Molly Baz girl or Allison Roman girl and I am Roman empire. Like, you drive the girl to the door and like watch her, like get out of the car and like watch her door. Oh, I loved that. I loved that. I loved how this movie like almost mimics these super, you know, sort of stereotypical or like bedrocks of mellow dramas or of like, you know, romantic comedies in a way. But really like finds a way to make them strange, a little bit off-center and a way that is like very unique. - Without taking you out of it, too. I feel like, I was still so in the movie and it felt great to be like this tone. Like, and the tone I wasn't expecting, again, to be as serious. But I could volley really easily between like the deeply unserious and the completely serious. And I think like there's, I mean, like it's spoiler alert, but like when she goes to rehab for eating disorder, there were so many incredible, strong moments and really strong performances from like the little crazy trio. I thought they were so strong together and they were such fun characters to play with and help like, I don't know, I like seeing Maddie in that orbit. I think the Cape Verlant thing is really funny because when we talk about a toxic mass lesbian, that's what I'm talking about, that's what I'm talking about, just by the way. - I heard her reaching over in the car and like unlocking it just like graze her to. - But like didn't like two more times, too, like incredible, incredible work. - Epic work. But they, okay, I feel like that's something that I get so excited about. They're a creative chemistry and I don't know them, but from what I feel like I've consumed from the two of them, John Raleigh and Cape Verlant, it's so infectious. - I love the way they yes and each other so much. And even the way that they keep the performance element going in like real interviews is so, they just have something really special to them and it feels like something that it's really easy, I think to watch duo's blend into each other. And I feel like their voices are so specific and so unique and so complimentary to each other at the same time. - Yeah, very distinct. - Cape Verlant solo show was fantastic in a totally separate way than like, you know, John Early in Search party as there's something like that. Like, it's really nice to see two people collaborate so well and so effectively and also still independently have like, their own like quarks and niches that like make them who they are. Yeah, I really love watching them more together. - Yeah, yeah, I love that. Oh, that's sweet. - Yeah, that's sweet. - Well, speaking of duos, the invite. - Oh, now she opens the book. Okay. - Now we're talking about it. - Invites, directed by Olivia Wilde and starring Olivia Wilde. Joe and Angela's marriage is on Thin Ice. When they invite their enigmatic upstairs neighbors for dinner party, the night spirals into unexpected places written by Rashida Jones and Wilma Cormac, starring Olivia Wilde, Seth Rogan and Pelppy Cruz, that one wig and Edward Wharton. - That wig. - They had to make her seem like she's too bad. She's the original woman to me. - She's not too bad. I mean, that's the whole point is that she's like sexy and no, like sexy have to like knock their whole world off kilter. I mean, that kind of tracks to me. - But I mean, like they had to like put a wig on her just to normalize that a little bit. - Now, let her be beautiful. Let the woman be beautiful. - I don't know why I'm making this. I mean, I hate that damn wig. - I almost thought I was like a part of the performance. Like I thought that at some point she was gonna take it off and that was going to reveal something about her character. - She looks so clearly, I kept waiting for the wig to come off. - However, okay, I wanted to like this movie more than I did. I liked it. I thought it was like a fine A24 movie. I will say part of my difficulty with it is that I kept thinking about like Hannah and her sisters, husbands and wives, like all these like older Woody Allen movies that are just as talky, but also felt funnier. And honestly, I almost said progressive in the way that it moves faster at the very least. Like I felt like we got stuck. Every scene I wanted two minutes shorter, five minutes shorter. Like I felt like we just got stuck and so on. Like we didn't move fast enough. - Really? - I was talking to Jake Cornell, who's on our show last week. And he thought that it was like very propulsive, had a lot of momentum. And I think they're at no point for a movie that takes place within one apart. I never felt like, okay, we're spending too long in this room. He needs to like move along. I've never felt claustrophobic. But I also just kind of felt like it was like a lot of like talk too. It was like, okay, so now we have these two characters together. Now we have to switch up and have these two characters. Now we have to switch up and have those two characters together. And it in that way felt a little bit limited to me. - Okay, you know what I felt? My main takeaway and this, I wrote this death to bicarious, cinematic ring camera footage? Love. Like what the hell? Okay, wait, but I didn't love your mind. - I know. Oh, that's an interesting thought. Okay, that's really how it is, yeah, that's the hardest way. - But I was really thinking that after a certain point, it started to feel like I was watching improv and everyone was just saying, yes, and we weren't actually like going anywhere. It just felt like too much like a bit or stick at a moment. I thought the tone in the beginning was like fun. I thought the score was great in terms of like, I love the heightened anxiety that like it, You know, the element that I added, but I felt like specific. from Olivia's performance, I like her directing work a lot, by the way, but her performance felt a little bit like over the top to me and I understood the contrast immediately. I felt like of her being uptight and, you know, stuff being like stoner and them being like open and liberal. It just felt like a little bit put on and like, yeah, I just started to feel like I was watching improv comedy after a certain point. Interesting. I did feel like, I like third dynamic and I can totally see how like the love is not in their marriage anymore. But it just had this like sheen of sentimentality, especially at the very end, but I just did not feel like was earned. Yeah. I was like, you had to do all of this to make it back to each other. I don't know. I definitely like the sort of class dynamic though, between Seth and Olivia. It was like, this was a house that he grew up and he didn't want people to know that. Yeah. And he felt, you know, like not successful enough and their the remodel, all that's it. I thought that stuff was really, really well done. Wait, what did what did she do? What was her job? I mean, no, she doesn't work, but it's it's it was a style of stuff she went to art school and then nothing. I was a little confused. I was just like, I don't, when I didn't understand that. But like something that I read this morning was that the kiss from Penelope Cruz was improvised. The like, remember when she like packs Olivia for like a second. It's like quick. I'll take it again. But like anything I was hoping for a little more gay. Sorry. Well, I have to say, I forget how much I love Edward Norton. Because I'm telling you, now that's a comedian. He was funny. He was like, I can read the star of the movie to me. I was like, you're hilarious. Yeah. With your little black ring on. And I feel like he just had really strong line readings and also like, the eye contact he kept toggling between with him and Seth Rogan. Yeah. It was so haunting and horny. And there's a way for someone to sort of weaponize their own like relaxation or like their own lack of anxiety, which I felt like he really was like showing off how calm and comfortable he was. And that everything about his character, I felt like pitch perfect. No, no, it's yeah, couldn't do any more for me. Like loved it entirely. Yeah. I don't want to enter the vocal Olympics like too much, but I do feel like I wonder how much this movie would hit if like, say Olivia's character was like a black woman, like a super up because I was thinking about Penelope Cruz. And like, I mean, it just hurt a lot of her career being again, most beautiful woman I've ever seen with my two eyes. A sex symbol and how that's like often projected on like Latina women. And I, but I just, I don't know, I was thinking about like, oh, like an uptight white heterosexual woman, like getting curious with like, a woman of color. I wondered if it would have like felt more interesting to me if they were both women of color. I don't know. It was just something I was twang with like and thinking about just because of the way like Latina women are portrayed in Hollywood all the time, which is like just more confident sexually. But I mean, I liked her role a lot though. Yeah, obviously. But yeah, I don't know. And what was her name, Pina and Hawk? Was his name? Yeah. And then he told that self-shoring Seth Org was like, nigga, anyway, what's crazy? I love Seth Roganbo. I know you do. I really don't play about him. I know. And I really like, I don't really. I know you don't. I know you don't. You stick side me. I will say like my main takeaway is that I really enjoyed the movie. I had a lot of fun watching it. Yeah. I guess it was a remake. Yeah. A couple of times. Yeah. Yeah. But I don't know. I I would say like one to ten. I'll give her seven. That feels healthy to me. What about you? I would say like a six. But with the caveat that like people talking in a room, women approaching middle age. Yeah. All of those things like this sort of class differences between, you know, neighbors and how people, how they were, you know, so uncomfortable, just like talking about money at all. Yeah. And how the other couple was like so open and free. And, you know, that stuff I thought was like really interesting to watch. I just don't think that this script was like as clever as I wanted it to be maybe. Yeah. It had me in the first half. And then I think I kind of like faltered off. Yeah. Sort of the end. Yeah. And it's about what happens when men don't gossip. I was like, this could all be settled if one person's just like, we could get so much further along here. If one person, if one was a snitch or one tattletail, just a little bit. Yeah. I didn't really work for me. Beautiful. Yeah. Very sending to us. Okay. I want to go back and see it in IMAX. I saw it on film. Otherwise, though, a lot to be desired. And half the way has to choose between Matt Damon, who looks like Mel Gibson. Oh, yeah. I saw people talking about on the internet, like Rihanna's style icon versus Zendaya as a style icon. Oh, say more. And I think Rihanna's style icon because she can make anything into a moment. Totally. And really can put things together like unexpected ways and can pull off looks day to day. That like no one else can do. That heart coat that she wore that one time. And every pregnancy outfit too. Exactly. Even like the pregnancy announcement outfit. Like those. She's so good at that. No, no, the first one. The pink puffer jacket. Yeah, that was cute. And under that bridge in Harlem. Maybe where is she? It was my Halloween costume. So I know why I'm talking shit. Yeah, I don't know why she is my mother. I'm sorry. Exactly. But Zendaya, I think, can wear clothes like no one's business. However, does not have the same sort of. I don't I don't know. Like her and law collaborating. But I do think Rihanna is someone I think about as an artist that like so much of her self expression comes from her self hood. Like the way she is in the world, the way she operates her like background. I feel like she's one of those like full body dressers. And the way that's like it's all in your personality. You don't even dare open a Pinterest. Like she's an auditor of her closet. Where I do feel like Zendaya is so private, which I am not like knocking. That's great. But it makes it so that she honestly, like, lends herself to the sort of theme dressing because she keeps much of herself to herself. And which is interesting, which is interesting. And I think that's why you know, her day to day looks are pretty normal. Totally. I mean, I think like she's like a girl that's probably like in a haley gap gene. And that's totally fine. And like a white tee. And she looks really good in that. And I also think it plays into the celebrity who's in actress and the celebrity who's a musician. And now like hundred musicians. Like it's all so much of your packages, your personality. [BLANK_AUDIO] And actresses, you do have to be a bit of a blank slate to a certain degree. I mean, I think she just also is just more of a casual girl.
