The Hodaki Breakfast Podcast episode opens with the hosts, Jerry, Maniah, and Zoe, working on a technical innovation to allow their producer Zoe to speak live into the show from outside the studio, a feature other radio stations have but they lack. They test various options, including a control system and a remote broadcast unit, with humorous banter about the challenges. The conversation shifts to personal phobias, with one host revealing severe claustrophobia triggered by small spaces, like a friend's asymmetrical three-door Hyundai, which leads to a critique of 1980s Korean car design and naming conventions. They share awkward interview stories: one involves a stranger who showed up claiming an invitation, forcing the host to stall while the band Stellar was insulted in front of them; another involves actors from an unreleased show, identified only by checking their Instagram handles. Zoe recounts a cafe mishap where she said "my bitch wife" just as the barista arrived, causing embarrassment. The discussion turns to TVNZ's new "sex pod," a solo broadcast booth in the newsroom for live hits, with speculation about its usage and authority. The episode concludes with plans to test Zoe's microphone by having her call in or use a remote unit, blending technical experimentation with lighthearted storytelling.

Daily respoke content that you won't find on the radio show, the Hodaki Breakfast Podcast. Welcome along to the Hodaki Breakfast Podcast, the first bite of the cheer of the first to see the sun, the first to see in a new day, the day of our Lord, the 27th of August, 2026. We're working on some stunning innovations in the New Zealand media landscape this morning. How are we ever? We're working on being able to, I don't know, if you've ever listened to another radio show, if you don't know, by the way, this is a podcast, we also do a radio show, live 6th to 10 a.m., weekdays on radio Hodaki. If you've ever listened to a different radio station, you may have heard their producer from the Beast Studio talking. If you've ever listened to our radio show, you may not have heard anyone from outside the studio speaking at all. If you've been on social media, perhaps, and you may have seen some videos of other radio stations and their producers are able to speak it out to the show, that has not been the case for us. Up until this morning, we're going to have a crack. There's a couple of options here. We're just I'm just trying. There's one option, it's called HK Control P1. That's good to start, man. That's good. This is the anti-feminist campaign you guys are running. If that was a man sitting in there, you guys would have sorted this out. It's nice of me to demonstrate that I'm trying, though, isn't it? Even though I'm pretending. But performative. Sometimes the pretending is going to be a lot worse than the actual just ignoring. It's not acting good enough. I went into drama school, Jerry. Did it? Yeah, man. For three years they're trying this. Okay, I could say three, nine, ten. Did you go to fuck out anymore? No, I got, I got only got put on a short list for that. I didn't make it. I made it into the second best one, Unity. The second best one, Unity. Yeah, Unity, bro. What's Unity? It was there. The one, you know where the buildings are falling down out by Mount Elbow? Yeah, out there. Oh, Carrington. Yeah, bro. The old, the old mental institution. Yeah, that's one option. Option two. And this case here. This is it. Is it going to be up? It's going to change everything it is. What if you girls, though, when the, when the mics don't connect? This is the only one. And I don't think this is going to be up one. Here we go. No, no, no, no. Well, Big Dilly, Big Dilly's the one with the big message saying it's possible. So I've asked before they've said no. They've said no. Well, I mean, Tilly wouldn't lie, surely. Who are you asking? Fuck, okay. Who are you asking to hire up? Finger asked. Who do you ask with it? You're the only person who uses that. I think I asked Mesh once. You asked Mesh once. I mean, he won't remember that. You may as well. Yeah. You may as well. I don't know. Asked your own piss. You know, in the morning, I have a piss and then steer into the bowl and go, excuse me, excuse me, piss. Anyway, there, you know, how do I talk to the studio, the beef, you know, producer? I don't know, but I think because Zoe can come steaming in if she's got something. That's not, that's not what we're trying to figure out. No, I know. I'm not trying to get Zoe steaming in. Yeah, but I'll work. Yeah, I'm trying to break down the doors. You're trying to break down the barriers. Yeah. Doesn't feel like that. It feels like you're trying to build a wall and make her pay for it. Well, we've built multiple walls in the studio recently. The radio heard a key walls that go behind you. Oh, you someone asked me if we'd moved studios the other day. There you go. That's worked. It's nothing. Got it. I was like, no, we've just put screens in front of windows that we could have otherwise just wrapped. Because man, these things are cumbersome and I've got to be honest, make me feel quite claustrophobic in any day. Yeah. I'm a very claustrophobic person. That is my phobia. Everyone carries theirs? Yes. You live in a townhouse. Sometimes I have to like, depending on what I'm wearing, if I am sitting at the back of an aeroplane, I will have to really concentrate on not freaking out. This is interesting. Yeah. If other large people sit next to me, that also will raise my blood pressure. And my friend, his mistress has a car that has three doors. And I don't mean like, you know, when they call a two door hatchback a three door, fuck off of that. The boat is not a door. No. A passenger door is for people to get in and out of, as you know, Ritter. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Like Zoe being able to steam into the thing. That's a door. You can't steam into the boat of a car. All right. But anyway, they've got three doors. So it's, you know, two in the front. And then one on the passenger side on the back, it's a Hyundai. I hate it. It's an asymmetrical car. And what? Yeah. So in the back, there are still three seats. But on the, like if you got in the left-hand side door, shuffled across, there's no door on that side. Oh, and I took one look in there and said, absolutely fucking not. It's a trap. Yeah. It is a fucking trap. I'm not sitting in there. Like, I am going to have a full blind panic attack in here. I have a panic attack based around my OCD. That would, the fact that it doesn't have doors on both sides really gets my, that gets my OCD going. Oh, it should be a door here and a door here. And that's a car that the way God intended it. Yeah. God didn't make a car with three doors. What's next? Marrying your dog. I also, have you ever seen the front doors open at the same time? They're different sizes. So the driver's side door, because there's no door behind it, it can open way for it's a huge. The other side is probably normal size, because that's got a door behind it. Honestly, you would hate this fucking. Oh, I'm not a fan of Hyundai's anyway. My first car was a Hyundai. Yeah. And I saw it. It's one of those square. Was it a stellar? Yeah, the stallion. It was gold. It was brown. I called it gold. Who designed that thing and did they ever put it in an air tunnel? Dave Hyundai. No, because it wasn't designed. It was designed. I mean, they handled like a boat. I have to assume they were trying to make a boat and they put wheels on it by mistake. Are they seen other cars before they designed that car? Yeah, they're seen roads. I don't know. I felt like the Koreans in the 1980s hadn't looked at another car before. It's like, you could go to Europe and you could see some quite nice cars, Japan. You could see some quite nice cars. That wouldn't be good in Japan. No, they're Koreans. So Japanese wouldn't let them in. No, but you could just look on a Russia. You could flick through a magazine and see some cars and go, oh yeah, we could copy that one. You could make one that looks like that. They have now, they've worked it out. But for some reason in the 1980s, the people, and also naming them some weird names. The pony, for example. Like, yeah, you've got a stellar. Okay, that's fine. It's named after the band. Ah, stellar of the band. Yeah. Good band. But pony named after nightclub and all kind of from the early 2000s, it's like weird, especially considering that was the 80s. Yeah, that club hadn't even started. Pony's are not quick. I've got one stellar related story, if I could share that for a moment. We were in here, Lee Hart, you may have heard of him. He was done the show here in the studio and some guy just showed up out in the office. Well, I'll get him out. Yeah, same at him. Lee invited me to come on the show with it. Oh, yeah, he's going to Lee. Lee has a guy out here who can see you've invited him to come to the show. He's like, he had a look at him through the glasses. I got no idea. Can you find out his name? I'm sorry. Can I get you a cup of tea, cup of coffee? What's your name? By the way, he said blah, blah, blah, blah. He said, well, he had a brand addition. What's the thing that's from a brewery or something? One of these best salesmen. I don't know. We're back in told Lee is, oh, look, I was at a, I was at a beer festival in the weekend. That could be anyone. You know, probably in passing, oh, can I come to the show? Yeah. And then he showed up. We're like, oh boy. And while Lee was just like, oh, can you just run a bit of defense while I hatch a plan? Because he's about to have to now interview a guy who he doesn't know who he is on the radio. So he's going, oh, and while he's doing that, sit to the guy. Oh, look, we're just getting another couple of interviews to do and then we'll get you in there and have you under Lee. Yeah, sweet. Who's in front of me? And I said, oh, Stella, the band, we're having a reunion tour. And he goes, Stella, they haven't been relevant for fucking years. And they were sitting in the office just over there. So now we've got the guys like, who the fuck are you? What are you, what are you doing here? Any slag enough to guess that we have booked? So yeah. So that's my Stella. That's, um, everyone's worst nightmare is being, you know, a radio host and you're doing a show and then next thing, you know, some people turn up and you don't know, nobody knows their names. And then I don't introduce themselves about you out one day. Yes. Remember this? Yeah. Do you get two actors from a show that hadn't come out yet? I think we'll had just premiered that day. Yeah. So no one knew who the hell they were or even what the show was. Impossible to Google. And they came in and you guys were interviewing them and you were doing it over two breaks. So there was a song playing. And I remember you come out of the studio and just like they never they did that thing with you introduce yourself and say your name and they didn't say this and so we're out in the office having a crisis meeting like what do we do here you're about to go back on here you can have to introduce these people and I genius that I am uncommon among uncommon men came in with a plan and I said hey you guys can I just get a quick photo for socials what's your Instagram handle and I'll tag it brilliant took a photo of him look them up text that I think was banging at the time yep Tim and Sarah yep and we're away laughing although I think it was it two guys and then I had to try and work out which one was what he had in mind of that tricky mind of it just to ask some every questions like so John and you know you everything you know John were you named after anyone like at your screen while you're asking John sorry I'm just googling here this is you named after who are you name after we did search their faces Mary and Maniah join the company the Hodecky breakfast discussion group on Facebook for more Brenting a car always feels like a bit of a battle but in the stuffy slow-paced world of car rentals snap is an illegal its own so it's no surprise that snap is the official car rental partner of the one New Zealand warriors when you rent with snap you're helping us for your next adventure choose a car rental company that backs our boys for the snap rentals.co.nz snap simply better car rental sharing the wells and Maniah's to it find them on Instagram at Hodecky breakfast hey Maniah I've just bought up a photo of Stella circa 2018 could you just have a look and see if any of those are the person that you interviewed maybe you won't recognize them obviously not bow-ranger. Oh yeah Chris Vandy gear. I don't know that I wasn't there that was that was no Chris that was Stella but the guy was from a brewery or a side rapper now I got you know yeah the band would slag in themselves off he was slagging them off back in those days as well back in the I think the the time when we didn't either shit the door does work so he's steaming in I was just going to say I just got reminded of speaking of awkward situations what happened that the cafe used today. Oh yeah we're going to talk about that on the oh we don't need to talk about that I don't know short show today so well there's a 650 slot open that open just in case that's just going to be it I don't know how I mean it's your guys story to tell but I don't know how you're going to Jerry looking like I guess you can't remember you I know I know I know that I should know and I know it was good but now I can't remember what it was that's terrible okay that's my dementia we're doing a bit we're doing a bit it's all a bit yeah we're all doing a bit at the cafe across the road having a gas bag about something something blah blah blah blah and my bitch wife and as I said that the lady with our coffees put her head right in front of it she's like and I was like oh then my bitch yep sorry flat white her face oh my god I started sweating that was so funny the timing was so perfect she all she heard was my bitch wife as she came to put the flat white down and her face we like I saw her face she was like whoa this guy oh I'm not married I was just there it was a joke there's guy yeah yeah she didn't realize the joke part of it she still doesn't know we did a poll it I see that I'm sorry did she I was I was planning cool you really you're gonna get she gonna spit in your coffee otherwise this is bitch wife we can't go back we can't go back there now unfortunately sorry guys I've ruined that but they always shop at the most annoying time don't they yeah you bitch wife yeah yeah that that that that was good stuff that was that was great stuff how's your microphone going in there Zoe well I don't know we might have a taste if it works like live if I put in but it does seem you told it so maybe that's part of the issue yeah you'd want to not say me yeah but I couldn't figure out how to make it not seem yeah right maybe you burn my tears do I do you know made it come in there and what do I do you know man's playing in there yeah I mean I tears my specialist yes I'm pretty good miss I'm practical I was laughing because we could set up the OB unit that we take out to the outside broadcast and we could set it up in should you be transmit through the 4g up to the sky tower then back to the desk and then back to the sky tower and then to New Zealand oh yeah because the other thing Zoe could just call yeah yeah so whatever happens she just sounds like a caller that's good let's try that on the yeah yeah yeah hi what are you calling for oh hi it's me I'm calling because the microphone doesn't work it sounds a bit different it's like yeah this is a this is a phone line you could zoom in as well that's that's great we're going to cross to Gen Z correspondent out in studio B Zoe that reminds me there's this new thing across tvNZ in the newsroom they've got the sex pod that they've set up and it's like an individual pod and you can go live at any at any time so the the higher ups there have looked at what the hero does and what stuff does and stuff and they've realized that they can go live into events without cranking up a studio for some reason you know because they'll just they'll just have one person say oh yeah okay so if there's a press conference or something like a parliamentary press conference to go live and to put that press conference on television you've got to break into programming on tvNZ and crank up a studio and then presenters got to go in there and there's a whole lot of people that have got to turn the studio on and it takes a bit of time and then they can put a live feed through and then feed it through like the herald just push a button and they've got a little pod kind of thing and they can just patch it straight into the hero website it's kind of a different way of doing things and stuff can do it as well but the higher ups with jealous about how stuff and the hero can do that yeah and so they created this pod that's in the news room now where you see any random person in the news room can go up and push a button and they're immediately cut into tvNZ plus the person wow the person in the pod is yeah and they can patch and whatever they're going straight into the tvNZ plus you know and also onto one news.co.nz but so like so if I was watching one on tvNZ plus yep you could then cut into the transmission I don't know about the watching the the TV one streaming channels that we straight onto tvNZ plus like on the on the home page sort of thing. Well this is the funny thing so so I used today I was booked up for some training and I didn't do that but anyway they're they're training like I suppose like people like me of how to how to do this so I can if there's a press conference or breaking news I can go into the six pod I'm just what a crazy what a crazy piece of power to give to someone like you. Nobody's decided yet who gives the authority to to go in. I know you brother and no fights are a short hero. Well nobody's also worked out like what do you say? So you go in there and like what are you guys up to? What? What happens if you're in the space of the family or what happens if you you know your bump it and you're just having an affair in there. Yeah. What are you? What are you saying? And also yesterday we were sort of talking sort of like at 10 to 7 or something we're about to go and do seven chat and we looked in the newsroom and there were three people in the entire newsroom. So if there was breaking news well then there's no one to break it. Well I don't know what you call people up bring them in from home or something yeah get in here get into the six pod. Many people calling it the six pod or just you. The six pod. Yeah. Uh no just me. Okay just me. Well can you have a crack at the six pod? But because I've because I've looked at the six pod I know but I reckon now with my experience of just sitting in the six pod and just looking at all the buttons I reckon I can saw. I mean this is way easier than the six pod. Six pods got all sorts of pictures and backgrounds and looks like a bad zoom meaning. Because you're really technologically inclined. Oh me. Yeah. Yeah. It's not only inclined. Yeah. Yeah. Six twenty six twenty wreaks of a six. Boomeritee Jerry tries to get the fucking. I'll get in there. He's going to go in there. I'll get in there. Okay. All right. All right. Let's try it. Okay. We're going to do it. I think you rung us from in there and walk us through the step by step. Yeah. Sure. I can walk forward to this. Right. Sorry. Excuse me. Sabotage it from your end. You I bet you pushed the wrong button on purpose, Ruder. Don't you dare. Don't you ruin it for me. Jerry and Maniah catch the radio show from six till ten week days. The Hodaki breakfast.
