Yeah actor He is the star and I believe the writer as well of one of my favorite movies So we'll go close to probably being my favorite movie of all time and this is your homework for this weekend is Try and find where to watch black dynamite Black dynamite is like a It's a kung fu movie Set back in the sort of 70s, but it's like a piss-take version of it You remember all of those they called them black exploitation films from back in the day where it was just all the bunch of Yeah, like African American kung fu dudes this movie is taking the piss out of them It came out in like 2009 and back in the day me and my mates used to Heavily on the fuck amount of watch this movie and it might be You know what else out. Yeah, well particularly now that I've looked up Joe 90 and yeah You do That's gonna ruin a little bit too usually get the Joe 90 sunglasses the glasses. He's got I feel like something that will stop you as well Especially if you're using your phone a lot during the next few days to help you feed the chickens is that El Boss Pixie gamble loves to chuck stuff in the group chat and I would hate to think that he's gonna interrupt you would that come up as a notification during Oh, yeah feeding so you're notifications off to god's sake don't understand what's that notifications? God have him off. Oh, it's good boy. Do we call you Mekki? Are you Mikey? Are you Whitey? Well, no, especially not that last one. So it's usually Mike J.M.J.W. The people just elect to call me all of these different things except the last one. What brings you to our shores? Well, I'm here for Armageddon, which is for people who don't know. It's not the end of the world. It's a comic book festival. And I'm going to be signing on Saturday and Sunday. Okay. Yes. There's sort of like a pop culture expose. There's also something for everyone in there. I was just telling Jerry before, you are in my, one of my favourite movies of all time. I think the funniest movie I've ever seen in my life is Black Dynamite. Oh, thank you. My friends and I, we used to watch that just about every weekend we'd get together and watch Black Dynamite. There's something that just had a shortcut to my funny bone. What was it like making that? Well, I mean, it was cool because I dreamt up the whole movie idea and I start writing it. It's just something that I was on my way. I was in a car being trained. I was in China of all places. And listening to James Brown's Super Bad. And then just had this idea of doing a movie like a lost movie in the 1970s by exploitationary. And I'm just laughing to myself to drive everything some crazy. But I see like the entire movie. And even with the nunchuck fight scene with Richard Nixon. And so I get this idea and I'm starting to jot things down. And I get back home and I just started putting it together. That makes so much sense that you're trying to listen to James Brown. That sums that whole movie up basically. It's just a, Jerry Ainson, I've given him that's his homework for this weekend. He's got to go and watch Black Dynamite. I don't know what it is that just has that, like I said, the shortcut. It's trying that ship for you and came in the room. All that, I don't know what it is. And so did you just write that whole thing by yourself? Or was it a collaborative thing? It pretty much me and a buddy of mine who he loved those movies as well. But he was, you know, he had never written a script. But we were like, we would put the, well, he's the same going to when they played Gooboo horn. So he was kind of an authority on this stuff. And so we would just, we would write and perform the scenes together. Like, you know, in my little office, right? And just crack each other up. And basically that became the script. So when you come up with a funny idea that you think is the craziest idea that you possibly can inside of a movie for a scene, do you ever go, no, that's too weird. That's too crazy. Or do you want to go as crazy in as weird as you possibly can? Do you keep going on that? Well, I used the actual Black Exploitation genre as kind of a guide. Right? And so there were things, actually, I studied and I created little vignettes of these movies that would be a funny documentary by themselves. But there are so many idiosyncratic moments and so many crazy things that are in the movies that are crazier than the movie. So, you know, so that, my parameters were pretty much set there. You know, so I knew, well, you know, I can go this far because this other movie went further. I actually don't know for real. Oh yeah, man, I can tell you so many movies. Oh boy. That you would not believe existed at that time. Yeah, well, that's what makes a movie so fun. Yeah. To me, you've been in a million movies. If you ever go back and look at your IMDB, it's I-Wordering the amount of stuff that you've been in. Is there a movie that you watch and you think, I wish I was in that movie? You know what I mean? If they put you in? My brain doesn't work that way. Yeah, there's that. Yeah, because when I see your movie, I think, okay, that's the way it's supposed to be. Yeah. And I just can't picture myself. Because I can see myself playing my Humidile lead. That's right. I don't know if Will Smith was the right. Do you go back and watch stuff that you're in? No. No, I don't. You know, sometimes I'll have a retrospective of things. I'll sit in for a while, but no. I'm so busy looking through the windshield. I've never looking at the rear-view mirror, you know? I want to know about how scenes fight scenes are choreographed. Because I've always wondered this. And you must have choreographed a lot of fight scenes. Oh, quite a lot. Sometimes I'm choreographing fight scenes at the last minute, you know, right before shooting it. But yeah, I changed choreography depending on the character I'm playing. So my belief is that if you're playing a certain character, he would fight a certain way. So I never want to fight the same way in two different characters. Yeah, right. So, okay. So, can you talk me through the process of how it starts? Obviously, you think about how your character is going to fight. Is there a method to how fight scenes have to work? Do they have to have a particular rhythm? Well, a good facing, I feel like there's still a lot of room for fight scenes to become realistic. Right now, there's a lot of fight scenes that look like fight scenes. And just like, as good dialogue starts to feel like non-dialog, you feel like people are really speaking. Fighting still needs to get to that place where you feel like it's a fight that's occurring and not choreography. So that's what I try to get to, things that look like they're real fights. And so when you're watching a movie and you see a fight scene break out of you, analyzing it, breaking down how they did it or how you would have done it. Well, yeah, sometimes, sometimes, you know, there are heightened reality type of fights that are in heightened reality type of movies. And so they fit. Like there's a, you know, a John Wick type of thing that's kind of heightened reality. And so it's kind of a ballet or fight scene. And it's not necessarily as gritty as it would be if it was a drama. So yeah, so, you know, the, the fight scene needs to fit. Does it ever know you fight scenes in superhero films where they kick? Oh my god, just yes. How do you injure a super like how come they get blastered backwards? I don't care about the, you can't be hurt. I don't care what happens to you. Yeah, you know what I mean? I just, that's stuff I can't really get into. I'm so pleased. I'm not crazy. No, yes. You know, and anybody who lands in a three point stance and then lifts their head up. I just, I'll turn off the TV. Yeah, I just, I can't stand watching the same thing over and over. And that will like, how can he punch this guy in the heat and he destroys an entire tall like a skyscraper folds down when he, but his face is fine from there. Yeah, I don't, I don't like those things. You know, if I would love a superhero movie that was kind of like realistic or just like kind of I had physics behind it. Like because if you weigh 200 pounds, you can't lift a car. You just can't. It's just the first of all, the bumper would come off. You know, so it's just, you know, do you think we've reached peak? Do you think we've, we've got past all of that now because it was a period I think in the 2010s. All the marvels. We're all those films we're just going gangbusters and just keep making the same film over and over and over. Because the audiences keep coming back to it. There's things I can't stand. I mean, anytime, even in horror movies, when someone grabs someone by the throat and lifts them up and they cut to the feet going in the air. And then his person is being lifted by their throat and they're still talking. And to say that their chin is that strong that your neck just doesn't go up like a pesdismenser. It just drives me crazy. I turn it off. You know, I can't hold myself up by my jaw. And then at least they pick the person picking them up. Should embrace them with the back of the other hand. You know, with it. Just this is just, I'm sorry. Let me not get off on a tent. What about, what about fights pooled themselves? Do you watch boxing? You say what he into all of that? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Watch a lot of UFC fighters. Yeah, yeah, you know for train will a number of them. Yeah, you know, a lot of them are considered friends and Yeah, and I've actually put a lot of them in my movies. Yeah Yeah, so I really respect real fighting and and there's certain things but with that you get from real fighters That you're not gonna get from stunt guys. Yeah, well you probably get smashed over for one I imagine how many times have you taken some proper knocks when you've been acting Almost never really honestly almost never you never really get hit. I mean the body. That's nothing but I mean you kind of want to get touched in the body so you can make it realistic, but you know you're never getting hit in the face in a movie It's always something's going wrong. Oh, yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's being loaded as well. Yeah, and you're your close-ups don't match If you get hit in the face now your your eyes will and that doesn't work Yeah, yeah, how many times is this your first time coming to New Zealand or have you been in my first time really? My very first time head of chance to look around at all Uh a little bit a little bit. I went out to um, I forgot what area With You guys were to eight well, it's kind of the hood, you know, okay.
