PMS 2.0 1637 - LIVE From Iowa with Ian Rapoport, Nick Saban, Ben McCollum, Kirk Ferentz & AJ Hawk

The upcoming college football showdown between the No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes and the No. 14 Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City is poised to be a high-stakes, defensive battle. Despite Ohio State’s 14.5-point spread, Iowa’s reputation for tough, disciplined defense—especially in high-pressure environments like Kinnick Stadium—makes the game a true test of endurance and execution. Iowa’s strategy focuses on slow-paced, run-heavy play and limiting explosive offensive plays, particularly from Ohio State’s star quarterback Jeremiah Smith, who has already posted four touchdown performances. The game is expected to reach a climactic finish in the fourth quarter, echoing Iowa’s history of dramatic comebacks. The atmosphere in Iowa City is electrifying, with fans celebrating not only football but also the cultural resurgence of Iowa sports, notably through the influence of women’s basketball star Caitlin Clark. Analysts highlight the depth of Iowa’s fanbase, the intensity of the rivalry, and the significance of this matchup as a defining moment for both programs. While Ohio State possesses a powerful offense and top-tier coaching, Iowa’s defensive grit and home-field advantage make the game a potential upset. The event underscores the deeper cultural and emotional stakes of college football, where tradition, community, and resilience converge.

>> Hello, beautiful people, and welcome to Iowa City, Iowa, the home of the Iowa Hawkeyes on this glorious field, good Friday. >> Hawkeyes is absolutely magical, and this city has not hosted college game day in 20 years. In 2017, the last time the Ohio State Buckais came into this beautiful city, the Iowa Hawkeyes hung 55 points on them and set this stage for an Iowa Hawkeyes run that they're still talking about to this day. Now what will this weekend hold not only here in Iowa, but across the entire country of college football. Last night, the NFL kicked off in an AFC North clash as the Cleveland Browns prove that they might be an actual football team as they once again smacked the Pittsburgh Steelers out of the city of Cleveland. Now it was obviously an electrifying evening to Sean Watson is finding his way in 2026. He hasn't played good football since 2020, and what he has around him is studs and stars, and a dog pound that is eager to see this team not be ass at football. Last week, to Sean Watson was getting chance, let's go, Watson. This week, he was introred last. I think that type of confidence has brought him back to who he could potentially be as a football player. They get a massive win over a Pittsburgh Steelers team is still trying to find their way in the McCarthy era. Whenever you talk about blown coverages like this, you want to blame the corner. Instead, I think it was the safety nonetheless, some miscommunications, some mishaps, some bobbles, and Indian and the Cleveland Browns, Andre Schmidt hits a 56 yard field goal to walk it off against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night. If that's how the weekend is going to start, we can't wait to see what football delivers to us all weekend. Now, we are the luckiest people on earth that we get a chance to chat about sports in football all day, every day. And it's not just me. I'm with a great group of people. Obviously, a man who knows the big 10 world inside and out, a man who's the former president of Ohio, an Ohio State Buckeye National Champion, a Super Bowl champion, representing his Ohio State Buckeyes, ladies and gentlemen, A.J. If you could just tell me a little bit about what it was like to play in Iowa, what it was like to play in Kinnick, and how do you expect your Ohio State Buckeyes to handle this world piss atmosphere of Iowa City, A.J.? I mean, we all know Kinnick is a very tough place to play. I actually got beat there, pretty bad, and like you said, they've been beaten in the past. All the respect of these people, great for them, but guess what, we didn't have Jeremiah Smith back in the day. We got Jeremiah now. I think the bucks are looking pretty good, but hey, I'm looking for a good matchup. I think everyone wants it to be close on both sides, but I feel pretty good about where Ohio State is right now. Yeah, as you should. Obviously, the Ohio State Buckeyes have already won loss on the season. Now, well, they have two losses in the first four weeks of the football season coming out of Iowa City this weekend. We've got a one-half of the hammer, cowboys, AP tone, last night, the Pittsburgh Steelers lose to the Cleveland Browns. It's not dive all the way into that, because I assume you're a bit bummed out about that. Let's be excited about what's happening here in Iowa City. What's the spread for the game? And what do you think everybody is expecting to happen with the number five Buckeyes taken on the number 14 Iowa Hawkeyes this week? If my daughter was down a bit last night, but I woke up in this beautiful city this morning with these blue skies, and I saw the black and gold all around, and I respect the place that plays defense and runs the football, I got immense respect for this place. The spread on this is 14 and a half, so the Buckeyes are huge favorites coming in here on the road. The total 45 and a half, which is a little high for an Iowa game, to be honest with you. But no, Iowa's going to mock it up. They're going to play in the mud. They're going to try to slow things down and go as slow as they possibly can. And, you know, I would say Mike and Iowa would again. Iowa might be able, just like they did last week, against Michigan, to force it to come down to a fourth quarter, down to the final play, where Vander Zee, Iowa kid, makes a phenomenal catch after a bobble to get in the position to do this at all. Hank Brott, QB at Iowa Hawkeyes, delivers the Vander Zee in the corner, and the Iowa Hawkeyes continue to be undefeated and lead to this weekend of celebration in Iowa City. And it's not just myself and AJ Hawke and APT, no, no. There is a group called the Toxic Table here, and one of them is at Boston Conner, good to see you, Conner. Good to be here. Good to be here. And the other is a graduate of Iowa from Waterloo, ladies and gentlemen, Ty Smith. Ty did welcome himself back to the city last night in only possible fashion that I think any of us would expect. We watched the Thursday night football game at Iowa Athletic Club. We had about, amongst all of us, maybe 30 to 40 buffalo traces in diet. Ty had 10 to 15 of them. Ty was telling nostalgia stories about being back around campus. Ty wanted to go to the pet ball, which I don't even know what that is. What? Yeah, that was last night. No, throw it. Yeah, I did not make it. Suffice to say, I did not. And you're a little bit older, but obviously anytime you come back, it feels like home. Can you just tell me a little bit about where we are, why we are, and what we are here in Iowa time? Yeah, I mean, it is crazy. I haven't been back. I mean, we came back when the Women's Basketball team was on their run and a little bit different. We didn't get the full Iowa experience at that time. We were at the field house. It was snowy out, so it really wasn't the same. And I told you, you called me right after Iowa beat Michigan and you said, hey, we might have to take the show here. And I said, it's going to be a madhouse. There is nothing like a football Saturday in Iowa City at Kinnick. You guys know, everyone knows. I think the weather has been terrible for the last, like, month and a half. And for God to just grace us with this beautiful day, maybe the first beautiful day that we've had in a long time. You mentioned it. I mean, I wanted to go to the pedmo last night as I was walking up here this morning. A lot of things have changed. It doesn't, you know, it looks a lot different than the last time I was here. But the more things change, the more they say the same. I know a couple things about this place, about this student body. I know that you guys love getting boosted up. Multiple days a week. And you know, it's the same Iowa team that it kind of always has been. You know, hey, they don't score enough points. They're boring to watch, you know, this team stinks. How are they ranked 14th? 14 and a half point dogs on Saturday. I'll tell you what, you do not want to go into deep water with Kurt's dogs at Kinnick. Kinnick Stadium is the place where rag teams go to die. And I'm just, I'm excited for these people to see the most dangerous college football team in the country come out at 330 on Saturday. It's going to be a lecture. Now some people would say the most dangerous team in the country is the team that has the guy that scored four touchdowns last week, three of them in the first half in Jeremiah Smith. But I think what you're saying about this Iowa Hawkeyes team is great defense, great special teams, great fan base. You come into this stadium. It's going to be an absolute dog fight. That's very apparent by the people that we met last night and also today, con man. It's a special vibe here in Iowa City right now. Yeah, it is unbelievable. And time mentioned it. I do believe it's been two months of rain and now we got this sun. It feels like everything is kind of trending in the Hawkeyes direction, you know, Kirk Farence. It's been 37 years. This guy has been on the Iowa football staff 28 as a head coach. He's not a stranger to big games. I see a couple good Ryan Day signs. It feels like it's going to be pretty hectic for that guy coming in here tomorrow. I don't know. I woke up loving Ohio State and then as soon as I got here, it was their mind. We're go Hawkeyes all day. It feels. It's hard. Every week. I get it. I'm excited to make my pick obviously tomorrow in college game day. The boys will certainly make their picks at the end of the show. AJ, early lean on who you have in Iowa, Ohio State tomorrow here, Kenik. Well, I think you'd be you would not be surprised my early lean. I'm my early lean is Ohio State right now. I know it's spread away 14 and a half. Yeah. Do you guys think that's right? Is that normal? That's a lot. It was OK. You know, what should it be time? I mean, maybe it should. I'm just saying Iowa will cover there. Oh, I got you. It's 14 and a half. I agree. It's very tough to beat it. I would team it by double digits. Yeah, correct. They want to keep it close. We know I respect what Kirk does and how these guys play. But with that being said, I just think this Ohio State offense is pretty explosive. They're going to look to put some points on the board. OK. Let's pivot away from. Oh. H. I. Oh. I heard a couple of you. Hey. I. Oh. That's good. Hey. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. In Thai, what's that song that no matter how low the alcohol consumption is for whatever generation they know around here? What is it, Thai? In heaven, there is no beer. ♪ Oh, yeah, oh, yeah, oh, yeah, oh, yeah, oh, yeah ♪ - You gotta keep it going, but they all know that one. - Okay, so I'm not 100% sure what that song is exactly. It's something about drinking beer here 'cause in heaven there is no beer, so we drink it here and when we're not here, our friends will drink all the beer. - Hang on, those are the only lyrics in the song. It's the Hawkeye Victory Polka. - I'll tell you what, that's a place that I love if that's what they're singing about, it's beer. - Now, let's go back to last night's game. Obviously the Pittsburgh Steelers are in the middle of quite a transition into a new era with a lot of old heads. Joey Porter, Jr. gets traded within the last 24 hours. Steelers lose to the Browns. I heard Stephen A Smith, who is a noted Steelers fan on first take, basically say, "We're dead in the water." I saw Aaron Rogers and Mike McCarthy yelling at each other last night. Now, Source says, "I have told us that that's just a language of love in Pittsburgh." This is sideline, everybody needs to get over it. Okay, we're doing a little football around here. I'm not giving away who my source was, but Source said, "Well, you better wait that long." (laughing) You don't know how it is, so I think they're all on the same page, obviously. Steelers fans are panicking mightily after last night and how do you kind of view what took place? Another loss to the Cleveland Browns. - No, I wouldn't say we're panicking yet. I mean, a lot of the fan base is panicking yet. I am not, just Cleveland has been an absolute house of horrors, especially on Thursday night, where they're on a 10-in-2 run, I believe, on Thursday night, eight straight, on Thursday night. Steelers are one in seven in Cleveland, so it's just been a house of horrors up there. But if you would have told me that Aaron would have thrown for $2.99, DK would have went for $1.15. Jalen Warren went for five and a half a carry. Like, I would have been pretty good coming out of that. I would have said we were great, but now the defense wasn't great last night. They gave up a ton of Deshaun Watts and a ton after the catch and after contact, their tackling was shit last night. There was blown coverages. - Whoa, tone. - I mean, we'll get that fixed. - Okay, TJ. - TJ was yelling at whoever on the mic last night. There was a lot of animosity on the sidelines last night, so I like seeing that. I like seeing that there's still very, very invested, so no, no panic from me yet, but no. It was a piss-bores effort last night. - Yeah, you could have won that. Obviously, you choose to run zone, and then obviously they get into a feel-go range and Andre Smith continues his perfect season. He's eight for eight on feel-go, seven for seven on extra points. Now a 56 yard winner against the Pittsburgh Steelers. And he got a game-bow in the locker room where Shoutout Coach Monkin hands him a ball. He goes, thanks, he goes. All right, and get the hell out. It's beautiful what they're building in Cleveland. Joining us now is a man who has all the inside information at a junior level. - Yeah, he's right. - So close to being a senior. There's actually a sign here that says-- - Right there. - Most notable meat smoker in all the time, in any time. It's over here to the right, Bruce. This camera, Bruce. This camera, Bruce. I think they're on it, this camera, Bruce. OK, you see it down there in the lower right foot, Bruce, you don't have to do that, Bruce. There's somebody-- a handheld has it, Bruce. A handheld has it, Bruce. - Right there. - There we go, no. - Ladies and gentlemen, the greatest meat smoker, at least the most famous one that we talk to on a daily basis or a weekly basis. Back with his weekly wrap-up with rap sheet and friends, he'd be in rap sheet, us being his friends. Ladies and gentlemen, junior NFL insider for ESPN and NFL Network, Ian Rapapolo. - Yeah, rap sheet. - Smoke that meat. - Smoke that meat. Smoke that meat. Smoke that meat. Smoke that meat. - Yeah, all right. Rap, they're excited about your ability to smoke meat as we all are. We don't need to talk about what you do in your personal time. Let's talk a little bit about your professional time here. Last night, Cleveland Brown's beat to Pittsburgh Steelers, yet again, in Cleveland. What are our thoughts on Cleveland? What is the word that you're hearing? And it felt like that quarterback they had was playing football for the first time in like six years again. They might be dangerous. No, what are you hearing? - Yeah, let's talk about the quarterback to start on. But as I remember before week two, what the word was with Brown's, they're going to come home. They're going to evaluate the quarterback position after a rough first week for Dishon. And I think a lot of people thought like, okay, they're going to turn it over to Shadour Sanders. And that's just going to be the last week here of Dishon. Except he had his say. He played much better this second week. And he has played really well. I mean, some of the throws that he made actually a couple of incompletions in the first half last week. I was texting, you know, other evaluators. And it's like, this guy looks good. Like, he looked good. He led them down at the end to a field goal. Wasn't perfect. Obviously missed the fan and in the flat there at the end. But like, he led them back for the win. Like, he looks like a legitimate starting quarterback. And they look like a legitimate three in one team. And with a really good young core and a lot of optimism. - Yeah, I'm Munkins the man. - Yes. - Everything about Todd Munkins. - I mean, he is the man. Yeah, I agree. Backwards hat, Aira and Cleveland is certainly one. Did I think the folks in Cleveland will fall in love with. Especially if they're winning. And then for the Pittsburgh Steelers side, they trade Joey Porter Jr. Get him out of town. They lose to the Browns. Feels like a bad 24 hours. How do we get to the Joey Porter Jr. trade? And how do we kind of feel as the, Joey Porter Jr. decision to play this weekend, as opposed to with the Steelers in the exact same situation? - Yeah, his back is feeling better, which we are certainly happy about. - I think that's a great thing for him. - All right, how do we get here? So they tried to do a contract extension. He was kind of the last defensive player they tried with. They got done a bunch of other guys. And he was the last defensive player they tried with. They weren't able to get a deal done. And because the Steelers one don't do the multi-year, rarely do the multi-year guarantees like a lot of teams, and because they don't negotiate during the season, there was nowhere to go. And so I kept wondering, like, would they break the precedent? Would they try to do a deal? They didn't. And he was very set in what he wanted to do. He did not feel great about the way the organization treated him. And it was pretty clear that he wanted to be somewhere else. And so I think the Steelers did, at that point, what was the smart thing, which was we just have to move on and take the best deal possible. So they got a future second-rounder and a late-round pick this year. And they just moved on. And they don't have to see him now going through ramp up or whatever. And he goes to the Cowboys without a contract extension, but in a much better place. And he's going to play it out and hope to show the NFL that he's one of the best at his position in the league. OK, so one more follow-up before we move to some other things to wrap around the NFL. AJ has a question for you. Yeah, Rapshee, do we know if Joey Porter, Jr., once the deal in Dallas is open to signing up to a long-term extension right now? I would be surprised if he got a long-term extension this year. I know it's not part of the trade. I mean, look, anything happens. But it was not part of the deal. It's not like one is coming. Is it even talked about, though, like something that is on the mind? Not to my knowledge. And I would say this, I look back. He is represented by David Mullageta, who also has George Pickens, and obviously also had Micah Parsons in Dallas before that all happened. I can't remember David Mullageta doing a mid-year deal for a player. I could be wrong. I just cannot remember one. So my sense is he plays it out. And then is either a free agent, which would be one of the top corners, or maybe they get something done at the end of the season. There's our tag, but George Pickens is on the tag, so it'll get complicated a little bit. Yeah, it certainly will get complicated. A lot of money to be paid. But Jerry Jones says there's nothing more dangerous than an old man with money. And he certainly has that. And how's he going to balance all the different personalities and egos? Jerry Jones got his own. I'm sure he's going to-- I think he'll pay everybody. Yep. George's going to get paid. Joey Porter, Jr. is going to get paid. Everybody's going to get paid there by Jerry? I don't know. It feels like that could be a big blowup situation. They start losing some games. Good, Joey may be comfortable with the franchise tag because George was. Yeah, I don't know. There's a lot to kind of figure out. And how come the Pittsburgh Steelers weren't good enough for the play with the-- That's crazy how bad. Joey Porter, Jr. and his family have turned against the Steelers because of disrespect for the contract. Let's pivot to some other store lines. Has we had to do another NFL weekend? Go ahead, Tom. Yeah, Ian, there's some big wide receivers with injury questions this weekend. Puka, Devonta Smith, Justin Jefferson, Mike Evans. What's the latest on those guys for this weekend? OK, Puka sounds like he's going to play. I saw some video that meant practice. Looks pretty good. Looks pretty fast. I would say that's training in the right direction. I would say Justin Jefferson has not practiced yet. He's got a sprained ankle. They're playing the dolphins who have not been the greatest, you know? Yeah. And I would say I do wonder if they're going to just say, let's get through the buy and then be fully healthy. Devonta Smith doesn't look like he's in a great position of play. Not a lot of optimism there. So he might miss the game, and there was one other. Mike Evans, you mentioned, right? So he's got a rib strain, which is kind of like a rib cartilage. It's actually like a pretty painful injury. They're going to try to get him to practice today. If he practices today, he's got a shot. If he doesn't, I'd say probably not for him, also. OK, a lot of injuries, obviously, piling on. There was a massive injury to the New York Giants, which forced them to make a decision. Go ahead, con man. Yeah, rap. She Jay-Jay McCarthy gets traded there. And all of a sudden, there's a conversation about, hey, is this guy going to play? Is it all James? What is the situation with Jay-Jay? Is there a future there in New York? What are we looking at here for the Giants and Jay-Jay? I believe there is an immediate future there. Now, James is going to start. And, you know, as I reported last week, James has played okay, which I thought was a very nice way of saying it. Yeah. And if he continues to play okay or less than okay, then I think you're going to see JJ McCarthy probably as soon as he is comfortable. It's going to be. If he gets in there and plays with a good team around him in a system that probably maybe hopefully fits him, I don't even know better, but something he's more comfortable with. Like, I'm really interested because we've seen a lot of quarterbacks who are young, who are talented, who have washed out somewhere, and then gone and played and played well and made a lot of money other places. If he goes and plays well, and let's say, I don't know, but let's say the giants are in the playoffs or have a chance, I believe Jackson Dard is their guy. I firmly, firmly believe that, but it's going to get interesting at the end of the year because then what do you do? You trade JJ again? Like, that's a great problem to have, it really is. I believe we just want to break on ESPN for some reason. Now we're back, that's awesome. Great to see you. We are live from Iowa City. What do we eat in Iowa City? What do we got to do? This is the greatest meat smoker on Earth, and Ian Rapaport, also a junior NFL insider. Last question for him comes from Waterloo Native Ty Schmitt. The Packers are taking on the Bucks down in Tampa, and there's been a lot of change up with the offensive line. Are all of those new guys that they have signed? Are they just going to plug and play a lot of those guys? Because obviously, defensively, they're doing everything they can with Iowa legend. Lucas Van Ness has been doing everything he can to share up that, and they're chatting green-based sucks. I don't need that. I don't need that at all. He's been playing well. He has been playing well. I figured they'd care about that. We got a lot of bears morons back here, apparently. But what is the plan for the Packers' O'Line this weekend? I felt like it was sign a bunch of guys. Now, some of those guys actually got money. Like, Zyler got money. Like, I expect him to, he is a pro. Like, I expect him to play pretty quickly. The other guys, it's more of, like, throw a bunch at it and see who kind of, who sticks, who can play. Is it Lakin? Is it Makai Bechton? Like, just basically, like, who looks good in practice and who can play? You know, they have, like, they have not look good. I think that is pretty clear. It is still so early and I have to keep reminding myself of that. Like, they're going to figure out a way to make sure this offensive line works. And by week, like, eight or nine, you'll be like, "All right, this unit actually looks decent." That's my guess, with some of these guys, but probably not all. All right, rap. It's time for us to send you into your meat-smoking hole for the weekend. We appreciate you. Do we miss anything that you. What? What's wrong? He smokes meat. You guys smokes the best meat-to-times. He smokes the best meat in any time, including this one. You guys are lucky, rap's not here, smoking your meat. If rap was here. He would smoke your meat every single one of you. You guys have a smoker meat here. One after the other. But who are you, macho meat, savage down here? Anything we missed, Mr. Meat Smoker? Um. We haven't talked about bears starting quarterback. Case care about the bears, yeah. Case kingdoms are starting quarterback. Uh, I don't know about that. Oh, come on. No, seriously. I mean, well, see, Ben Johnson talks in a couple minutes. They're going to try to keep it close to the best. I was most interested in Ben Johnson coming out at the end of his press conference after the game and saying, "Just remember, Tyson Beijing has earned the job as number two and earned it out of camp." That kind of made me wonder if they would turn it over to the player affectionately known as T-Bag, which is a great nickname. Sorry, what? What are they calling that? I thought he was the bag man. He's the bag man. No, I don't think so. I think T-Bag is the bag man. No, he's the bag man. T-Bage, potentially, because he's Tyson Beijing. But nonetheless, rap, we appreciate the hell out of you. Thank you for joining us. And this man said just one week ago, "You were maybe a little bit full of sheet." Do you remember this? If you have anything to say to Coach Shabin, now that he's right here, Ian Rapaport? I respect him more than any other coach I've ever covered. Except Bill Belcher. Except Bill Belcher. Let me say this, Ian. You're no more popular here than you were in Alabama. That is true. That is a fact right there. Ladies and gentlemen, please make some noise for Senior Meat Smoker, Junior NFL Insider, Ian Rapaport. And then we wrap the sheet. Coach, I don't know if he ever smoked any meat for you, but he is one of the best. Ladies and gentlemen, please make some noise for the greatest college football coach of all time. (Applause) Coach, obviously you get your start in college coaching in the Big Ten at Michigan State. You have a lot of respect for this area. You are a bit of an SEC homer at this point, but even you would come onto a campus up here and say it is magnetic and magic. What are your thoughts as you step foot into Iowa City on this day on the eve of a massive one here? Well, I don't have a lot of good memories about coming here and playing. This is always a tough place to play. Pink locker room, great tradition and enthusiasm by their fans. And always a pretty good team. And I think that is the same thing, but I have been very impressed with this group of people here. (Applause) It is the first time I have ever got cheered in this town. Let me just sell you that. Okay, so tomorrow Iowa, Ohio State, 14 and a half points spread. Obviously Ohio State, number five team in the country. They have lost the Texas and the fourth quarter that they kind of trick off. They could be undefeated. They understand that. Texas number one team in the country. Jeremiah coming off four touchdowns. Iowa is going to make everything a bit stingy. You would think at least in Kinnick. How do you see this game going? And what is the avenue for Iowa to get a massive win here? Well, I think what Iowa has to do is what they normally do. They try to shrink the game, run the ball, control the ball. Play really, really good defense. They are one of the best tackling teams. And, you know, there is not a lot of trickery involved in how they play defense. They just play well as a team. They are tough. They tackle well. They play together. Everybody understands how to do their job. And I think the key to the drill is, can they limit Ohio State explosive plays? If they can keep Ohio State from making explosive plays and make them drop it through. Play well in the red area. Get tough to score on. They can keep the game close, just like they did at Michigan last week. And then winning in the fourth quarter. That's the next round. Okay, now on the flip side of that to Ohio State Buck guys. Obviously, Julian Sain with another year. The defense with Matt Patricia, another year there. They had a lot of people go to the NFL, but seemingly still in a good spot. Jeremiah, they're saying best football player maybe in the entire country. What does Ohio State trying to do to come in here at Iowa get a massive win? As 14 and a half point favorites, with college game day, with everything that's kind of taken place here. How do you handle that if you're Ryan Day? Well, I think Ohio State's one of the most complete teams in the country. I know they got tired in a fourth quarter and Texas came back and beat him, but I still think offense, defense, special teams, roster. They are one of the best teams in the country. And I think it's going to be very difficult for Iowa to be able to defend the explosive plays. Jeremiah Smith, you know, my scout team quarterback, Jalen. Julian Sain. Julian Sain still doing really, really well. And I think they probably need to continue to improve on defense, you know, down the road. But I think Matt Patricia is probably the best guy in the country to be able to do that. I'm excited to see how Kirk makes this thing, you know, a dog fight. You coached with Kirk France, right? How many years ago, 75 years ago, you guys? Now, we were together in Cleveland in what, 93, a couple years, but, you know, Kirk was a great offensive line coach. A really good innovator in the game in terms of, especially of how to run the football and how to attack a defensive front. And I think that's going to be a real key form in this game tomorrow. They didn't run the ball effectively against Michigan. They need to do that tomorrow in this game. AJ Hawke has a question for you. He's representing the Ohio State box. Yeah, I know, I know it's a tough place to play, too, as well coach. If you're Arthur, let's say you're Arthur Smith, obviously, and you're the offensive coordinator for Ohio State. How do you, we have a guy like Jeremiah Smith that just such a polarizing figure. How do you, I guess, not force the ball to him too much? That's the thing is, and how do you get Julian Sain comfortable with all the rest of his receivers? That's the thing sometimes when you have one guy that stands out above all, where sometimes a quarterback can try to force it. Is that even possible with Jeremiah? I think it is, but I was kind of impressed watching last week's game against Illinois that there were more people involved in passing game. He spread the ball around a little bit more than normal, and he wasn't trying to force it to him. But I mean, number four, I mean, you got to get the guy involved in a game, and how much is too much? I don't think there's ever-- What do you do on defense? Like, honestly, there's-- Oh, put a guy on the gym at the line, play cloud, and then put a safe gym or topic. What do you truly do? I think you got to try and play him over and under, try to jam him, don't let him release off the line of scrimmage. But still, he's a big powerful guy. Who jam's going to be that big? Yeah, who jam's going to be that big? He's a big powerful guy. He's got really strong hands. He's great at the contested catch. I mean, this guy's one of the best players in college. Football is a fantastic catch. He makes her an hands on. So this guy's going to be difficult to stop. But one of the things that I think the way I would play is defense. They play a lot of cover seven, which is three on two week, four on three strong. - And if you only have the guy at the X receiver, it's a little easier to take him out of the game, split in on a weak side. But they're gonna move Jeremiah Smith all over the lot, which is gonna make it really difficult for Iowa, not to get caught in some kind of a one-on-one matchup with the guy, which to me is the kiss of death for Iowa. That's not what they want, but that's what they're gonna get. And Arthur Smith is gonna create it. - I'll tell you what, it sounded like you were speaking in hieroglyphics just a couple seconds ago. - Cover seven, four over three on two on the east side, and then we also got this on this. What can you break that down a little bit more? So doofus is like me, can maybe understand what you're saying? We're triple teaming Jeremiah Smith, is that what I just heard out of you there with your three over four under two sides guy? Higher glyphics thing? - Well, if you can play three guys on two, which you can on the weak side of the formation, there's a better advantage to the defense to be able to take the split-end out of the game. - Of course. - When you get to the strong side-- - Strong side! - Four over three. Now, somebody's gonna get in a one-on-one situation because you've got four guys on defense playing against three, guys on offense, can't double them all. So, and I think that's where, you know, Ohio State will create a great advantage with number four. - Strong side! - Left side! - Okay. - Yeah, I don't know. I remember the Titans still bringing it as well, and it sounds like beer is still bringing it here in Iowa, which we are certainly appreciative of. It is mild in here at the Pentecost. We appreciate everybody hanging out. Good to see you guys. It's not gonna cost saving. Boston Conner has a question for you, coach. - Yeah, coach, you know, you were high on Florida coming into the year and you needed them to win to sell a couple more Ferraris, and they're doing some sure it's going well. What is Summer all doing to get them all the way up to number eight? Is it bloody Tuesdays? Is that something, you know, you had going, and that was kind of how he instilled his culture? What is kind of the secret sauce, and is it sustainable? - Yeah, I thought I was in very impressed with Florida, especially on offense. I mean, these guys are scoring a lot of points. They got a lot of weapons, quarterbacks playing well. They got a great runner, really good receiving core. So, I think they're gonna continue to be explosive on offense. Can they play good enough on defense? But I think Buster Faulkner is one of those guys that in his culture, he is creating toughness, and you do that in practice. And one of the most difficult things I think in this day and age of football is have enough depth on your team to be able to practice that way. And I think some of these better teams that we're seeing, Georgia, Florida, you know, some of these teams, Ohio State, they actually can do that in practice. (audience cheering) Iowa can too. (audience laughing) But I think that culture is very important in good tackling, controlling the line of scrimmage, taking care of the football, all those things, and I think you're seeing that sort of separate demand from the boys now. I like that they were saying excuse me, excuse me. There's another team, there's another team. Do you know how to spell this state here that we're in right now, coach? Iowa? Yeah. Let me hear it. (audience cheering) (audience cheering) (audience cheering) (audience cheering) (audience laughing) (audience laughing) (audience laughing) (audience laughing) (audience laughing) That's how you spell it. Four letters. (audience cheering) Peace together. Magical football vibes. Tone has a question for you here, coach, David. Yeah, coach, you're Crimson Tide. Have to go down to Starkfield this weekend in a huge one in a matchup of just incredible young quarterbacks. And then, Bama also has Georgia, I believe, coming to town next weekend. Is it ever a thing as a coach in like, where you know that Georgia's coming to town, where you have to, you know, keep your players focused on the upcoming week, even though it is a great opponent, even though they've had really good success against Mississippi State. Now, I almost think you have to build that into the culture. Okay. When I always talk about playing one game at a time, one play at a time, so players stay focused on what they need to do, especially playing on the road. All right, where the momentum of the game can really swing on you. You gotta do a great job in terms of focusing on good execution so that you don't give the other team the momentum in the game. Now, I do think the two teams that have difficult tasks, the most difficult tasks, you ask me about Florida, they're going to Missouri, Missouri score points. Alabama's going to Mississippi State, Mississippi State can score points. So, to me, those are the most challenging games, and it's always a trap game for Alabama to go to Mississippi State. It was one of the hardest games for me to get our players up for, to respect Mississippi State for as good as they were, to play in that environment over there, where you got cowbells ringing in your ear for days, after you play there, and to be able to go there and have focus on that game and play well in that game. Okay, let's talk about a game that some teams are going to have to focus and play well in, especially for your home state in my alma mater. If you didn't graduate, do I still call it an alma mater? Yeah, 'cause they give you an honorary degree. No, they have it. It's coming. But if you really kind of, you still turn the night, I need one, I think they would. Yeah, but I want to earn it. Yeah, I don't want to be giving it a degree. I want to be like, all these students showing up every day and earning it. (audience cheering) Which is why I'll never get it. Zion, never get it, don't have it in time. I appreciate the hell out of these people coming out and hanging, especially in the middle of this beautiful campus. In front of our old Capitol, is that where we're ready? Here's correct. Now, this Capitol is for the entire state? It was at one time. Okay, let's remember that tie with your question that the entire state of Iowa is good. Yeah, for sure. Coach, obviously you are a West Virginia native. We thought maybe there was a chance they were going to get game day last week, tough loss, but they are traveling to the armpit of the United States and aim to Iowa this weekend. And I'm just curious, big 12 is still wide open. How do you expect that game to go? I mean, Iowa State, yeah, there we go. I was really just trying to get to that. I don't care about that game at all. What's your take on the big 12? Yes. Well, I'm still a Mountaineer fan, all right. Hopefully that West Virginia can rebound. Yeah, from the tough loss last week. They're a running football team. They're going to have to control the line of scrimmage to be able to do that. But the team that has impressed me most in the big 12 is BYU. I mean, I think Bear Bachmauer is playing better in the back. He's a more effective, efficient passer. He still can run the ball. They still can run the ball. They play tough on defense. So that's the team, I think, that everybody needs to keep an eye out for in terms of how this big 12 works out. Okay, so they won Iowa in the big 12 now. Is that what I heard? Yeah, you guys want to leave the big 10? Yeah, because he was saying who the top team in the big 12 wants BYU and all this entire group up here in the front, which we said they love. But Iowa, Iowa, how about this? Iowa would be one of the top teams in the big 12 if they were in the big 12. We would never, we would never. We are a cornerstone institution of the big 10. We're not going to the big 12. I'm quite frankly, that's beneath it. How come-- And that's really the way it should be. I mean, the big 10 is great here. I mean, the West Coast teams? I don't know that they're not. What about West Virginia? You know, when we were looking for a home after the big East kind of disbanded in football, allegedly, West Virginia was trying to get into the big 10 and tie Schmidt and he's Iowa. People said, our school's too stupid to be in the big 10. Did you hear that? That's a big-- I have heard that. I don't like that at all. I heard that when you all try to get in the SEC, too. [LAUGHTER] Is this going to be a part of your documentary? Hey, I want to let you know. Fantastic job. Pub in your doc. I want to let you know. Excellent. Saw you everywhere, does it? We saw you everywhere. We know that that is something you certainly probably loved doing, going around town, talking about your entire life to everybody that has a microphone. We appreciate you doing that. We also appreciate you opening up your life for us all to learn. What do you expect from this doc you series? Six or seven episodes, I don't know what was being reported. What it was, I've not seen it yet. Excited for the premiere next week. What have you learned about yourself through the whole process? And how has it been going through this all, actually? Well, you know, one of the reasons that I really wanted to do this was there are so many people, so many players, so many coaches, so many friends, family, mentors, along the way that sort of helped us develop who we were so that we could be or in a position to have a chance to be successful. And the institutions who supported us. So this is kind of a tribute to all those people who contributed to us having a chance to be successful. And, you know, I'd like to have people see me a little bit more than just a coach. And maybe what kind of person, Miss Terry and I, I've tried to be through the years. And what our legacy might be someday, I guess. Yeah, and then is there any conversation that was a good drop here? You're phenomenal in these commercials. Is there any conversation about the acting chops that you had in maybe next profession? Because they always need no offense. Please don't take any offense this. Take all that offense. Don't listen to that asshole. They need old ass dudes to act in movies. And what? That was not offensive. He said, he said, don't take offense. I said, it's not offensive. It's not offensive. With all due respect. Yeah, with all due respect. But actually, you doing acting in these commercials. And then obviously, you do in a documentary now. How has it been kind of expanding your horizons now that you're not fully focused on trying to win football games all the time? Because I did see you get asked, are you ever going to go back to coaching? And you're like, it's really nice not to have to just view the world through a straw of my Alabama program and get out there. How have you enjoyed life since retirement? And all the other stuff that you've been trying. And you are good at acting. So if somebody needs the book, an older handsome gentleman-- Distinguished. Sorry. Young Sprite! older looking but still young looking for actual age gentlemen how have you enjoyed all that type of shit actually yeah I've really enjoyed it it's opportunity to do some different things and I what I really enjoy about it is being able to look at the college game from a thousand feet rather than just my team our team who we're playing and be able to see like cam scataboo I wouldn't know him from a low to cold but to gain an appreciation for the kind of competitor that guy is and a lot of other players in college football that's been really fun it's been really fun to be a part of a team which we are you know on game day and I love these guys yeah good football guys they ask good questions I love that yeah and we love you coach and we speak for the football community we appreciate the hell out of your commitment to ball and I can't wait to see who you picked tomorrow Alabama you know Mississippi State because you've been Camario Taylor's biggest hype machine from day one and then who are you gonna pick in Ohio State Iowa are you gonna let you know the sports books sway or are you gonna pick these fine people of Iowa obviously you have about 13 hours to figure that one out thank you for joining I want to tell these folks right here this is an announcement that I should not make I picked Iowa as my super dog for the game tomorrow Wow they got a cover oh don't ask a follow-up yeah shut up no follow-up I didn't Nick Sabin starting let's go Hawks chance in Iowa City college football is the greatest laser gentlemen seven-time national champion coach Nick Sabin we're still live as coach Sabin makes his way out of here to go film something for tomorrow's college game day once again remember we are live nine Eastern 8 p.m. local for college game day here in the Penta Crest which is front of the old capital right in the middle of campus tie I was looking some things up to try to get try to get a little bit well versed with this state sure so I want straight to the farmers Almanac yeah good place to go okay do you know that the F.A. ranking for corn currently sits as as the helicopter flies over top and we see the sky view you can get some corn here on door dash by the way yeah you definitely get the farmers Almanac rating of corn from my understanding the way it currently sits Indiana number one Nebraska number two yeah no Ohio number three Ohio number three I'm gonna stop you right there I want number four top four in the corrod absolutely wrong and these fine people know listen hey okay anyone with a brain in their head knows Iowa produces the best sweet corn in the world bar none I don't know yes they do Indiana any I live in Indiana the sweet corn sticks frankly it does you know you bind it from Kroger some little it absolutely stinks soybeans corn hog farm to table you name it Iowa does it better than anywhere else FTT how about how about Buffalo Trace and dots how does Iowa do when it comes to that particular department because we were in a place called Coralville is that was Coralville yep we're across the river I guess a Coralville absolutely beautiful feels like the entire city is buzzing about the hawks now it's not just the hawks obviously football team Caitlin Clark has her shoes launching I believe right there right over there cool court top one last night for the fever against the A.C.s what happened Tom and at the Iowa Athletic Club last night we're watching Thursday night football on one half of the Iowa Athletic Club the other half of the Iowa Athletic Club locked in on fever aces I mean you're talking watch party type stuff I could have imagined I guess that that happens here but what Caitlin has done for the city we live in the fever as a whole and what they're doing here special stuff aces move along Asia Wilson plays great and now fever have to watch from home common I thought that was a special environment watching that take place really cool really nice bar as well just the entire thing the amount of screens was awesome but yeah it is real I mean the Caitlin Clark fever has not left Iowa it is very very apparent the kind of footprint she has left here which is quite mean the whole reason we were here the last time was Caitlin Clark but I mean there there's not just women's basketball and Iowa's Caitlin Clark there's there's a couple good teams when it comes to Iowa basketball but again fever aces it was tough that's a tough loss I believe there's a little bit of a free throw discrepancy what's too happy with yeah yesterday last night was a little bit of bullshit I don't know if Ingolstone right did against the fever but they will be back yeah ladies and gentlemen the reason why that chant is happening because joining us right now Iowa Hawkeye man's basketball coach who won on a run this year all the way to the elite eight ladies and gentlemen Ben McCollum you gonna put it on don't you you got to put it on come on now there you go coach there you go coach come on come on size is that we got you to excel too don't worry I tell you what a lot of people talk about me being on olympic I think you're talking about the wrong science coach thank you for joining us thank you for the gift obviously this is going to rub on my yeah it's gonna be like I ran a marathon after the show you tape him up yeah I got you an excel too we weren't totally sure your size thank you coach I appreciate that okay so yeah there's to be some blood by the end potentially so just tell me about becoming in being the Iowa Hawkeye basketball coach having the success that you have but also having like what it feels like the support of them no matter what happens certainly when you're winning the go crazy tell me about support and what it's like to be the Iowa Hawkeye's coach a little bit yeah I mean I was I was born and I was city and and grew up here to have you see crowd right here yeah good crowd we need them at the games right yeah which week we got them there this year born and I was city then obviously grew up a Hawkeye fan had season football tickets all the way through even to where I was the coach at Drake and the coach at Northwest was very state and so just love the Hawkeyes have always done it never thought this was a possibility I always thought I could play for the Hawks my 5/11 frame didn't allow for that yeah didn't didn't happen for me so ended up division two and and coach there again had some success and went to Drake it was fortunate enough to come back here yeah time was incredibly pumped whenever you become the Hawkeyes head coach I think they all do the success becomes immediate for you whenever you're coaching with in the same university as Kirk Fairons who's been around as long and obviously you're born here so you understand do you two work together like how does kind of the Iowa sports world kind of tie together if that makes sense well the background that I come from is division two and so you want for everybody else's success you know sometimes at this level it can be a little more transactional and you get isolated and siloed like here it is like everybody wants for each other's success including coach Fairons when I first heard from him the funny story when I was in the job interview process and he texted me it would have been three days before our NCA tournament because I said I told the ADM not gonna talk to anybody during the NCA tournament right and he texted me and it's hey this is coach Fairons and I'm like I got a bunch of Hawkeye buddies so instantly I kind of deleted the number and I sent it and they were they were impressed but then I talked to him the first time and he's he's as genuine as he seems he's as real as he seems and obviously he's a he's a heck of a coach one of the best coaches in the country and you know obviously my favorite football coach as well yeah huge one this weekend for him obviously is Ohio State comes to town what do you expect from this weekend here in Iowa City and what should we expect as the world kind of gazes upon Iowa City here yeah expect the Hawkeye win I mean that's what I expect oh yeah I mean I expect AJ to rock this hat when they win okay is that the deal I think that's a good I don't know I don't ever do a high state tarp no he won't he'll wear and he's not wearing a high state there's no chance I got it I got it I got to respect for it and I appreciate that AJ has a question for you coach yeah I guess when you're evaluating recruiting players whether it's high school or NIL like through the the transfer portal who what kind of guys are you looking for because I think Iowa has like a brand of football basketball how you care yourself like what are you trying to go find out there in the country to bring him into this campus. >> Yeah, I mean, we obviously want skill. You want light to consume, so you've got all the Xs and O stuff, good basketball players, et cetera. But from an intangible standpoint, we really want tough kids. Like, we want tough kids. >> How difficult, I guess, isn't to find a kid. This guy actually is tough, instead of, we all seem like the fake tough guys. Timmy, tough nuts, you call them, like you see them. But an actual tough guy that'll come here and fight through adversity. >> Yeah, you guys got any Timmy, tough dogs, aren't you? >> We try to avoid those, they end up being out of our program pretty quick. >> I like that. >> Timmy, we try to evaluate, I mean, we just tell coaches that we recruit. Like, hey, man, if he's Moody, if he's not tough, like it ain't going to work, and he's not going to make it here. And so that's what we've attracted to with the staff that we've hired and the players that we currently have, so that it naturally recruits itself. >> Has the coach already said any of that? >> Your coach? >> It's getting there. >> Yeah, yeah, it's getting there. I mean, you make it doing a lead-aid, I think that probably expedites everything. >> Absolutely, yeah, know that helps. And the fans are coming out, like the students, supports coming out. >> Yeah, I like that. >> Because it does take, I mean, it takes everybody. This is that true college environment, that true college feel. This is what makes it so fun. And yeah, I mean, our kids are working hard. We've got an even tougher group this year, and it's going to be fun to coach. >> Are you bopping wood out there with the guys? Are you in practice? Are you smacking it? Because it sounds like you're a pretty quiet talker. >> Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm approaching it. >> No, I get after it now. We get after it in practice. That we just got done with practice. You should have came by. >> I wasn't invited, but on that note, you always invite him. >> On that note, I do have a little bit of, right now, I got a little bit. >> As long as you can guard, you're going to be okay. >> See, that's what I'm saying, I'm not smacking wood at all. How much of an emphasis is that? I feel like that is the differentiator between the teams that go and don't, is on the defensive side. I assume for you, that's a non-negotiable with the lads? >> Yeah, absolutely, it goes with the toughness pieces. You got to guard, and from an offensive perspective, we try to be efficient offensively, and we'll shoot it a little better this year. Should be a little bit more open down this year, just because the personnel that we have. Obviously, we don't have a top 16 pick in the NBA draft right now, but hopefully we can develop one throughout. >> That's Iowa way is development. Have you heard about the rankings of corn? That have come out? >> I have not, but talk to me about them. >> No, no, I'm not going to be the one to say. >> Talk to me about the rankings of corn. >> I'm in your world. I mean, I was number one. >> Thank God. >> Is that the- >> Is that the- >> Is that the- >> My in-laws are farmers, and so, yeah, maybe it's- >> Are they still down in there, they kind of, they kind of step away. >> Yeah, my brother-in-law still runs the whole farm, so it's as good as it gets. >> On a dear, obviously. >> Hey, we're real Iowa here. >> Yeah, that's what we do, that's real corn here. >> I get it, yeah, in addition. The Iowa sweet corn is delightful. So Amanda, as you can say, about the way you eat corn, that'd be very- >> Oh, yeah, please don't say that. >> No, wait, what were you going to say? >> No, no, no, it's technically- >> Tell you the saying. >> Ty has a question for your coach. You've made his life a lot better. You need to know that before he asks you any questions. He absolutely loves you. >> Yeah, without a doubt. And I'll say it for you since you're- because you're too modest, you won't say it. It still feels like a dream that Iowa basketball has the best coach in the country. Buy a mile. It's not even particularly close. It's not, you don't have to say it. I'll say it, all of them will say it. And it's just, it's the God on its truth for a team that was just kind of, you know, kind of lay in dormant for a while. That'll lead eight run, like I'm still dreaming from it. But this weekend in particular, and, you know, the way the football season has started, like how important is that for the program? We see the recruits on the sideline. Like, do you feel like it's almost- it's almost better to be in Iowa City and like, you know, you are right on the precipice of, like, this thing really exploding. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, when you have success and you're surrounded by it, like, with the football team, and obviously all the sports have a lot of that success, you know, we use that. We use that. Like, when they come to the football games, they see the support that you can get if you had some success. And then, you know, naturally, when we attract the right kids, and hopefully we can get to where we want to be eventually where it's, you know, you can consistently compete for big-ten championships and hopefully making more a little bit further than elite day runs. Yeah, I'm expecting a final four this year. That's right. That's the only place to go. That's how you want to get to that final four. You might not want to make it to the National Championship so that you have somewhere to go next year. Yeah. Yeah. We did that at D2, and then we won another one right after that, so that's why wouldn't you want that pressure? I don't know why. We actually have a graphic that says Ben McCollum does not lose. It is an absurd record thus far. You know, obviously, we've seen coaches in football go from D1, D2, D3 up to the, you've been everywhere, man, D2, D2, D2, D2, D1, D1, D1, elite day. We're winning, we're winning, we're winning, we're winning. What do you think that has taught you? I guess this, we can get some actual question out of this graphic that says that you win all the time. What do you think that has taught you in this modern NIO world that we're in right now? From coming from a place that I assume didn't have a lot of assistance and help you kind of get a wash. Want a system? Yeah. How does that help you think in this world where I know there's support from Iowa. Obviously, I was not in the same conversation as some of these schools that have like 15, 20 billionaires giving them on money, but Iowa does want you to succeed and support you. How does your road kind of assist you, you think, in the modern college rooms? I mean, you get the right kids and you can have some success, you know, and for us, it's always been that, like, the first thing you do is how do you create a culture you get the right people? Because you can't just change everyone. And so for us, we try to find the right fit for what Iowa is and obviously bring them in and try to develop them. My path from division two is unique because you don't, like a division two, you don't necessarily, obviously, I picked all my players, but you don't, all of a sudden they get a division one off for, you don't get them after that. And so you kind of get what you get to a certain level and then you develop a relationship and you're able to make them better and better throughout the years. And so, I think that helps us. You know, I think that helps us identify talent. I do think a lot of coaches this level, what they see is, hey, this is a kid that's ranked here. He may be good, but maybe the benefit starts the world that has zero division when offers might be better. And that's what we have a vision for because of the background of division two. - We appreciate you. - Thank you, Senator. - Appreciate you. - Let's go. - Let's go, let's go, Tim. - Thank you, sir. - Thank you. - Let's see you guys. (audience applauding) - See you guys. - Thank you, sir. - Thank you, Coach. - I've got a photo with you here before we get out of here. We are still live, obviously. - You're from there. - I'm perfect. - Big Ben. Appreciate you, buddy. We appreciate that. As hour one wraps up here, really tight t-shirt. (audience cheering) - Very good though. - Really yellow. I kind of look like a piece of corn. By the way, the rankings. Pennsylvania might have the best course. - No, no. - Coach, on the other side. Goodbye. (upbeat music) - Football. - He is the absolute greatest in last night. NFL week four kicked off. In Cleveland, Ohio is the A of C Norse battle between Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns. Want the Browns way? As the Steelers now are trying to find their way. And Todd Monkett and the Browns are a completely different operation than we have seen at the past. Dishon Watson hasn't played good quarterbacks since 2020. Last night, he gets another win. And Todd Monkett is cooking in the great city of Cleveland, Ohio. Pittsburgh Steelers have a lot of questions. Who they're going to be, what they're going to be. They just traded away Joey Porter Jr. Hopefully, they're able to figure that out in the first year of Coach McCarthy as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. It's got a packed hour today. We have head coach to the Iowa Hawkeyes. Kirk Ferrence joining us in about 30 minutes or so. Can I wait to catch up with him? Ben McCallum joining us in the first hour. Gave me this size large. Just everybody knows. Just everybody knows what's going on right here. This is the size large Iowa basketball shirt. And obviously, these people here have been so damn hospitable. We appreciate you all hanging out. It's been a pretty wild ride since we've landed in Iowa. Obviously, it's a great cast of characters. A man who's a college football national champion. Super Bowl champion. The water cup winner. And also representing the Ohio State Buckais who come into Iowa as the number five team in the country. 14-and-a-half point favor. AJ Hawke is here. Yeah, Hawkeau. Hawker, your thoughts on the first hour here at Penta Crest in front of the old Capitol in the middle of Iowa? I thought it was. It's been a great hour. I appreciate you showing up in Buckais hoodie. Buckais had right in front of these people. How do you feel about the energy of the place? And what do you-- Hawke, let's go. Hawke, my family, that's you. I got a lot of family members. Thank you. I appreciate that. Well, I know your thoughts are on the vibe here. It's pretty awesome to be honest. It feels like a college campus. Like, I always wonder, do kids get a true college experience when they come to the school? I feel like if you come to Iowa, you're getting a true college experience. You have like the brotherhood, the community, and I truly feel-- and I try to pander to these people because I don't care. But I'm saying, I feel like this is a fun place. It feels very similar to certain spots in Ohio State when I go around campus. OK, so it's not just AJ Hawkeau. Obviously, 1/2 of the hammer. Cowboys, AP, Tonys, or your tone. What's the story of last night? Home dogs continue to cook, and congrats on a brand new hat on your head. Yeah, thank you. It's a beautiful looking hat. Well done, Tonys. A few years ago, I decided I was going to try to adopt a college football team, and I picked the Hawkeyes, but then it was just two stressful Saturdays and Sunday. So I just enjoyed the sport. But I do love this place very much with the black and gold, the run game, the defense. It's awesome. But last night, yeah. Home dogs, again, at Spin the Story, It was us. I don't know if the books are getting it wrong or just, you know, home field advantage is that like that in the NFL these days to see us have always or on a run where they always have trouble in Cleveland and to Sean Watson. I mean, he was like not just throwing the football, but like he was running. He was making guys miss an open space. It really felt like we returned back to clock. We're watching 2020 to Sean Watson. He was running. I think his confidence is high. That city's behind him. If he's able to continue to win. Obviously, it feels like Todd Monkin might be the right guy. For the entire city of Cleveland. Now, home dogs are obviously a part of the story in the NFL. Could be a part of the story of college this weekend as we head to the toxic table at Boston Conor and at Ty Schmidt. Ty 14 point dogs at home is Kirk Ferenc and a Hawkeye since the show has started until now. How do you feel about the outcome tomorrow? I mean, I'm just getting more and more juiced up that we're going to be seeing a Hawkeye victory on Saturday. I'm not so sure. I'm not so sure that line maybe shouldn't flip tomorrow. I will maybe like minus three minus three and a half. That might be a bit of a stretch, but no, I mean, suns out. It's shining. The people came out. We got coach coming on the show. No one thinks they can win. You know how many games have been like this during Kirk Ferenc's tenure where it's like, hey, why do they even play in this game? It doesn't matter. I was going to get their asses kicked. They're massive underdogs. And then somehow they get outplayed the entire game, but for whatever reason, you know, with two minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Hawks are down by two points or three points. And somehow Kirk's dogs always deliver. I expect to see the same thing on Saturday Hawks are going to win. Hawks are going to win. It's also I believe daughters birthday. So it could be a massive Saturday for you, Ty Schmidt, which I absolutely love. The other half of the toxic table at Boston Conner, your thoughts on Iowa here and the weekend ahead for a football slate. It's beautiful. When you go to the, you know, the bars around here, I mean, even the hotel, everything feels new. You can tell the place is expanding. This isn't just a old school field. There's a new school coming into this place as well, which is awesome, but the entire weekend's great. College football on Saturday's going to deliver having this game be a 3 30 feel special because it's going to be like what 65 degree starting. I got 50 degree finish into the night. It's a little matinee and then into the night games that are fantastic than the NFL on Sunday. I mean, I believe you got something going today with the crowd and everything when it comes to the NFL picks. That should be fantastic, but some of the games we have, we got three prime time football games at 1 p.m. It needs to be noon here in central time, which turns out is the best time when it comes to zones. But no, I'm very excited. It's going to be fantastic all weekend long. It is nice to get an extra hour at night. Yeah. Yeah. And then, you know, sleeping if you normally wake up at 6 a.m. as AJ Beechster, hell out of his mic. It doesn't matter if it's Eastern time or central time zone. There's a sign down here that says they need to revoke your license. I don't just tell them the guy during the break. I'm a great driver. That's false. They should take that down. Okay, you're saying that's false information. But when you talk about the central time zone, it is really nice to get that extra hour. Yes. I'm more powered by the moon than I am by the sun. So I'm a night person. So the central time zone certainly great. But if you're a 6 a.m. wake up person, 7 a.m. sounds a lot nicer. Like I woke up this morning at 7 a.m. normally 6 a.m. wake up person. But obviously because 6 a.m. here is 7 a.m. our time. It was beautiful. It was nice. I do like the central time zone. It is. I think it's an Indianapolis is like this far away from the right time zone. Maybe we should think about doing that. Let's talk about times. I know this Midwestern football fan base had eyes on this. But we have our first flex of the season. The NFL has the ability to flex games out of prime time to flex games out of more eyes on this game time slot. The Chicago Bears in Green Bay Packers, one of the oldest rivalries in the history of ball. Get it the hell out of the 425 spot. And let's move in the NFC West 49ers and Seahawks. This for week five time. I would have never expected this to happen. Green Bay sucks chance here for the Bears fans. Green Bay fans say the same thing about the Chicago Bears. Literally one of the oldest rivalries in all of ball getting kicked out of the 425 times slot for the Niners and Seahawks. Your thoughts as a packer's owner and what do you think this says? No, I mean, I'm absolutely shocked. 49ers Seahawks is undoubtedly a better game right now. But I still wonder like does that mean that we're no long because I assume this was going to be Brady and Burkhart. Are we not getting that anymore because they do the one o'clock game every once in a while. But if we're getting Kenny Albert and Jonathan Vilma now instead of you know that I don't I don't know how to actually a sense for this first game. And also with it being this early in the season like does this indicate that the NFL thinks the bears are just going to beat the shit out of the packers so they're trying to bury it in the okay. I'm not going to do it because we're in Iowa City but you guys need to shut the hell up all of you. I don't want to hear from one bears fan. No, but this is this is shocking. I mean a lot of these other games this would make sense. Like you said, this is a premier rivalry, the oldest rivalry in the NFL and usually these games are you know very exciting too. The Bears Packers first met in 1921 when the Packers joined American Professional Football Association later the NFL. The all-time record the Green Bay Packers lead the regular AM post season series 109 98 to 6 out of 213 games. And then obviously it is big city versus little city in the middle of America battling from the beginning. AJ I think one of the big things Aaron Rogers wanted to pass down to Jordan Love is like hey you hate the Bears. And I think whenever Aaron talked to Caleb Williams he said hey you hate the Packers. I do think it means something for it to get flexed out I think is pretty wild in this state of football. Yeah, it is wild because that's one of the first things I got to Green Bay as rookie years and years ago and that's the first thing that we talked about was that Chicago Bears rivalry. From Ohio, I didn't I knew there was a good rivalry. I did not know how big of a rivalry it was and how big of a deal wasn't how historic and all the crazy games. There's some awesome cheap shots, some great fights like all the stuff like you can make a beautiful montage of all the Packers Bears games and hopefully that's how it is moving forward but for them to get flexed out is a bit surprising for me. Yeah, it's 49ers Seahawks going to be a great football game. We're excited about that. Obviously the fans win Packers Bears fans a little bit confused about the state of their franchises though at this exact moment. Monday night football continues to be high Chicago Bears obviously bringing it even with their third string quarterback. I like that Ben Johnson saying I don't know anybody anything. Who's your quarterback? I don't know. It was a guy that just almost threw four touchdowns in the perfect game. Maybe I don't. What about the other maybe I don't know Ben Johnson always working. I love the way he coaches. Yeah and I think Bears fans are much more confident with their future right now than Packers fans speaking of future. There is a team last night that punched its ticket to continue its journey in the MLB playoffs wild card last night electrifying in front of the program. I think stole the show. Is that right time? Yeah, I mean, certainly you know the winner take all game Chris sale comes in late in the game on one day rest. I think and I told you when he did it, you know, he pitched upwards of like 90 pitches. He's he's getting up there. Like you you mentioned it when he came on the show. Like you're an old man now. He's kind of like the the season veteran around where all the young pitchers look up. Can we get this camera man to hell out of this shot? Yeah, I agree. Yeah, you have not earned the right to jog out onto the field. Wild card playoff with Chris sale is he's coming in to close a game as a living legend two days after starting it. Get the hell off the field now. I'm done with that. I'm assuming that shot super lit, but haven't him go out there at that time. I don't think any of us expected that love how the manager reacted whenever he got up on the mind. Yeah, just super balsy and that says a lot about Chris sale where it's like. Hey, I don't care if my arms falling off like let's close this thing out. Let's move because we've seen in these playoffs. You know, even with the Phillies in game two, they get a couple guys on and then you know, they have enough big bats with Schwarber and Bryce Harper where like you you can make a mistake and end up going from a six to lead to like all the sudden. Oh boy, we might lose this game now. So hats off to Chris sale. I'm very excited. They're moving on. And yeah, I mean his legend just continues to grow. Here's a couple of fun facts about last night for Chris sale. He threw six and a third innings with nine strikeouts and 95 pitches on Tuesday. Obviously last 90 pops back in there strikes out three out of five batters hasn't done that since 2018. So this man hit a hundred a couple times hasn't done it since the World Series in 2018. Special story developing maybe down there in Atlanta. They move on Phillies exit. Now what the big storyline with the MLB playoffs is what all the big dogs now get into play. So Dodgers are back. They are the favorites to win again. Brewers are coming in and then you have go Brewers, I guess got a lot of fruit. Okay. So we like the Miz. I was going to say, yeah, sorry, but yeah, so it's going to be that. And then I'm the AL. It's two divisional matchups in each. You got the white socks and the guardians and the Yankees and the race. So B showed up last night. So did hockey. Do you see this crack and goal? Oh, I'm going to have a goal. They were three nothing. Forget old buddy's name. Christensen maybe something along lines. Anyways, people are saying maybe goal of the year last night for cracking. Old buddy jumps over a guy cuts back five whole hockey is bringing it early and often. What was Jack Hughes doing in that interview after a second? I don't know if people are asking what Jackie's usually doing versus what But the question was doing, but Jackie Hughes, I mean, how about him, overtime game winner tosses a stick into the stands, hockey, as far as starting a season goes, hockey has probably done it better than anybody thus far. And not to mention, this goal was fantastic. Jackie Hughes coming back after that interview was fantastic, throwing the stick into the crab was fantastic. It looked like the guy who caught the stick was wearing a USA Jackie Hughes tarp as well, which was awesome. And then nine goals last night, I don't know if you saw that. Big David and the Edmonton order put up nine. He had four assists, a goal, dry sidalized two goals. I mean, the NHL is cooking early, which has been sweet as far as us getting closer to the sports equinoff. Here's the goal from the crack in last night that the world is talking about. There's a jump, there's a slice, there's a dice, there's a five hole. If we could play it, here we go, thank you boys in the back. Oh! Three knots. Hit! Yeah. What was his name? The big Nick Marotto back in the truck. If Chandler Stevenson, there he is, thank you. Boom. Is everything alright? Back here, Bruce. Everything you guys do great. Big old boys. All good back here. I did not have that name and I did not have it to pull it off the top of my head. Yeah. Well, I appreciate you doing that. I don't know if you heard the folks out here giving you a nice ovation for the way you've stepped in for Foxy Pound. Yeah. I don't know if you think I don't have it, Bruce. That's Bruce. Not booze. Well, they're not booing you even though they're in the middle of that when we couldn't find that highlight that was sent into the group 15 times, there was certainly some booze coming from the table up here. But they don't deserve that. The boys under fire have operated immaculate and Mitz stayed sober last night. Is that right? Congratulations, Mitz. Mitz over. I think you had a couple, but you know what I'm saying. Okay. Yeah, like he was. It was California sober for sure. He was focused on his job. You know, we don't sage. Can't do that here. You're talking about sage. We don't do that. Yeah, it's not. Yeah. Is that true? Yeah. Yeah. This is Indiana. I don't care around a map of where you can. I do. And this is just Indiana. A couple of states over from my understanding. Yeah. Pretty much, although I'm guessing if you're looking to find it, you know, a couple of these students back here. You probably don't have to look too hard. Yes. These guys don't have sage on them. These guys are all booze bags. I can tell they're looking at them, especially that one right there. Red headed kid up front. The mountain is booze. That guy's hammering. I can't handle it. Oh, headed for purple. I mean, the bags on those eyes. Jesus Christ. Look at Marco. Look at Marco Hawkeye right here. I mean, this guy has been sober for the last 20 years. Oh, he has. And I respect that. Oh. Oh. Oh. W. Hey. I. Oh. W. Hey. I. Oh. W. I. Oh. W. Hey. I. Oh. W. Hey. I. They'll be doing that all day, every day. And without further ado, ladies and gentlemen. Ladies and gentlemen, joining us now as Mike Foss continues to talk to him backstage. Ladies and gentlemen, one of the most iconic names in all of football. The head coach in Iowa, Kirk Williams. Yeah. Yeah. [APPLAUSE] Yellow's on my back. I'll red away black. But take it to the office. Thank you. Thank you. OK. [APPLAUSE] Coach, how are you? How you doing, coach? Thanks for seeing me. How's it going, Coach? Hey, nice to see you. Good handshake. Thank you, Coach. Good off. Thanks a lot, handshake. I'll get you up in here for about that time. Yeah, wow. Need me in there. Use a big seat. You know what I mean? That's a good idea. Uh, I think these people love you out here, Kirk. [APPLAUSE] Yeah. Obviously, your commitment to this state and to ball is fantastic. We did the math. I think it's like 37 years of service here to the University of Iowa and its football team. First of all, thank you for doing that. Thank you. [APPLAUSE] OK, so-- If I can make it to December, it'll be 38. OK. Oh, really? If I can make it that far, yeah, we'll see. Whoa. Whoa. Go. You need you to make it forever. What did you do to make it forever, Coach? One at a time. OK, I like games. Yeah, just like games. I like that every process has its way. You, obviously, 37 years around. Old-school football guy. We're talking to Coach Sabin. You guys coached together, I believe, back at the Browns. You were an offensive line coach for a long time. Then you step into this role. Do you view yourself as the old-school football guy? How do you view your mentality, mantra, and how you go about cooking up a football team? So we just-- our newest staff member, Tom Moore. Oh, I'll tell you what, Kirk. There you go. I've been around for a long time. It's great to get back to the University of fucking Iowa. You got a good job. You can say that. Exactly. I wanted to get it in there. But nonetheless, Tom Moore, coming back, how is it with you? And how do you view your style, first? Maybe other places in this moment? The reason I referenced Tom is he don't call it old-school. He says it's the right school. And I think everybody's-- I'm not judging anybody else, but everybody's got their own way of assessing things and deciding what's the best way for them to do it. Wherever they may be. And as you know, it changes every year, every team, every week, sometimes, how your team's going. So you do what you've got to do to win. And that's still-- just talking to somebody. I heard on the radio Tuesday morning, somebody referencing the money. It's becoming an industry. And it's all about entertainment. But if this is old school, I guess at my priority is for us to be successful and try to have more points in the whoever we're playing that week. Yeah, that's old school, old school. I think having more points in the other team is certainly the most important part. Defend special teams has been focal point of your teams, I think, of your culture. You have it again this year. Last week, it was massive. We obviously pinned some deep. We have a kick return. Our defense shows up. And then Hank Brown has a miraculous final drop. Bob will catch van der Zee in there. Do you feel like you have a little bit more added element on the offense aside this year than maybe years past? Or do you view the team the same way? Yeah, we do. And you know, lots of them talked about our offense. Usually it gets down to what kind of players you have, what your experience level is. And I go on a dissertation for the last several years. But right now, we've got a group of linemen that are experienced enough, not game experience, but in the program where I think they're doing a good job functioning. And obviously we typically have had some pretty good tight end. You played with one of them. And that's been-- And then the receiver group van der Zee is a great example. This is his third year, first year. He's been healthy basically since last January. And guys in our program, if they're doing it right, they get better. And Reese is a great illustration of that. And then we've helped with some guys from the outside. And we have a good group of backs. And the wild card Hank hadn't been hit yet. So last week to see him get hit and do what he had to do in front of 100 plus 1,000 people. As you know, you can't hand that to somebody. You got to go out and do it at some point. Yeah, there's no pill for stupid. And there's no experience like live action, especially at the quarterback position. I think those are two facts of life. Let's talk about another fact of life. You have been able to become an NFL factory. We looked it up. The number we found was like over 220 NFL guys have come through this campus right here. Why do you think your school, your system, has done so well creating pros for the future? Because just for who I was able to play with, Bob Sanders, Dallas Clark, Mitch King, AJs, Pat Anger, obviously, led the NFL in tackles, I had a bunch of Iowa guys. But that's every team has Iowa guys everywhere. Why do you think that is the case, coach? We've been really lucky and we do well with guys that like football and don't mind working and have pride. And it really, to me, that's what the game gets down to whatever position you may play. And then I think you just cited some guys that are great illustrations. I've never worked at one of those schools that maybe gets all the top five recruiting classes. So we have an open mind about a guy who's five foot eight. And I don't know if we've had a more dynamic player that impacted our program in a more dynamic way than Bob Sanders. And going back to his first year on campus, covering a punt first came me ever played down in the Arrowhead stadium. And he didn't know if he was in Uri or Arrowhead. He's going to go tackle the guy who's going to catch the ball when he did and hurt the guy there, unfortunately. That's how he cut his teeth. When he went in as a starter later that season, that's really kind of our tempo just kind of went like that. So if you get the right guys and the guys you just mentioned, I'll fit that bill, credit the bill point, and Tony Dungee, they recognized something about our guys. But those are the guys that get it done for us. And yeah, so if you like football, don't mind work. And I think we have a good program, a good structure, and a good-- all the resources are here. And this place loves beer. So every Iowa-- Who does it? I mean, you know? Yeah, exactly. Well, what I was about to say is every Iowa teammate that I've had was a great teammate. You know, that felt like an important thing for them was to be great in the locker room, great hang. Everything like that. That's real. That is really-- Yeah, you swore already. So I'll say something to him. We got to know asshole's own. I mean, yeah, it's just not. You know what, guys? [APPLAUSE] I can't imagine any more intimate than football. That's a great thing about it. It's just such a great sport. So many people involved yet, there's a commonality. So why would you want to be in a building where you don't want to go. I want to see a guy who's walking down the hall. It's just a bad feeling. And we've been really lucky. Guys tend to come here for the right reasons. And we went some loose on that type of deal. But the guys we work with are just outstanding. Do you have that no asshole thing still? Yeah, Tom said that, not me. Yeah, me too. I was quoting him too. So I was just pulling on him. They're not going to fire him. Absolutely. Is he's donning all Ohio state stuff, coach? Yes, of course, coach. Obviously, you guys have developed players here for years and years, and he continued to develop guys. And that seems like a time now in college football. We might not see that as much at other programs, like actually developing, coming in, gaining weight, doing all the right things. Is that something you've always been passionate about? And how are you able to do that better than everybody else? Well, it's our only chance. And I'm smart enough to know that. One of the great benefits I had coming back here 27, 8 years ago was I had been an assistant here for 9 years. And it all happened fast. I was really young when I got here, I believe it or not in 1981. And it was a magical time in our program's history. And I worked for one of the all-time great head coaches and coach fry. But it was a blur. So after I got out of here, I was just like, actually, bump middle way through. It's like, how's all this happening? And a big part of it was, we just had a lot of great stories, guys, that maybe you didn't see coming. And after a couple of three years, they just they blossomed as players. And not many of our guys walk in the door ready to play, we just don't have that luxury. And that's been the same way in the last 27, 28 years. But I also learned this from Coach Gable watching them wrestle during that time period. Yes. How are you? I could take you down anything, double. I'm not a wrestler, but what I did notice was they didn't always take the four-time champ. They sometimes took the two-year guy that's on the rise. And that really was a parallel, I think, to our football approach. And if you're getting a guy that's coming up the ladder and really has the right attitude, then you got a chance. And I don't know if it's always the best way, but it's enjoyable. At least you have fun coaching. Tom has a question for your coach. Yeah, Coach, we talked about how long you've been here, 37 years. But Phil Parker, the best defensive coordinator in college football, I believe, has been here for 27 years. So this is your 28 for him as well. Your 28 for him as well. So when you guys are building a game plan, especially against a team like Ohio State, how much are you involved in it? Or how hands-off can you be? And because he's been here for so long, and you trust everything that he does. It really goes back to when I got here, probably the smartest thing I've ever done was hire Norm Parker as our coordinator. And the first thing he said, we got to get Phil on the staff. I had to watch Phil as a player in the '80s. I thought he could be in the Stoops family. We had Stoops's play for nine straight years. So I admired him that way. And then, but to answer your question, probably the only requisite we hired Norm. I think if we were a three-man four-man, I just wanted to make sure we were going to take blocks on. And not give up big plays. I mean, and tackle well, and you can do that. If you're going to be a defensive team, regardless of philosophy. So I stay the hell out of the way. And I've let those guys coach it for 28 years, and they certainly don't need expertise from a short slow-line battle. I think they certainly do. I mean, I know that you, great coaches, love to defer and deflect all the credit for everything. But when your team is always good at something, I think you just need to know that's part of your trait. Well, you got to just who you are. If I was to get a team, ownership somehow, I fell into 13 billion. That'd be so cool, by the way. Yeah, it would be awesome. All right, let's say that-- What would you do with it? I'm telling you. I'm buying a team. OK, let's say you are retired from Iowa, not that that's ever going to happen, by the way. If I wanted to have a team that had good defense, good offensive line, and great special teams, you'd be the first person I would hire. And I wouldn't be the only person. I think a lot of people would do that. Let's talk about that third phase, and why you guys are always so great. Connor has a question for you. Yeah, coach, special teams in general patch is mentioned. I mean, it's the third of the game that feels like people forget about that aspect, but not here at Iowa. That is clearly something you guys focus on. Where did that kind of thought process for you go back? You want Patriots fans? So I always kind of link you with Bill Bella, check no matter what, especially with the Farron's family in New England. But what is kind of that entire angle every single week that you guys focus so much on? You're teeing that up for me on its ironic, because you nailed it. But the ironic part is, when I was here, that nine years in the '80s, I hated special teams. We all had-- we didn't have a special teams coordinator, so we all had a segment. And part of mine, as line coach, was be the front line and pump protection. In our system, it was impossible to do it the way coach try wanted it. So you try not to go against the green, but we had to do some things on the slide any when he wasn't paying attention. But very obvious that one time, and I echoed that, he goes, I'll give you 5,000 bucks out of my salary. Take that off my plate. Go try one, go for it. But it was so long story short, the irony is that I really didn't value special teams. I valued having Reggie Robyn here. That was pretty good. Yeah, I can. My first year, I was like, well, he's pretty good. Yeah, well, I really got it. And so anyway, when I got to Cleveland, it was an education. And I really, two-fold, first of all, being in the NFL, you'll realize how important everything is. 60 minutes worth. And then the second part is, as you well know, that's Coach Bella checks. That's how you got started. So from his first job, I blues them Denver. And then, you know, so he was very involved in that and very-- yeah, I'm not very smart, but I do copy things and notice things. And here's one of the greatest coaches that's ever walked. And it was important to him. So it made a great impression on me. And it kind of falls up with what I got here. I knew it was going to be maybe a while before we could win as much as we wanted to. So the two things right now are off the bat or a strength conditioning program. And then secondly, special teams. Mainly because you can get better at special teams faster than off-ense or defense. And then the next thing was defense, obviously, because that's timeless. But it ties back into Bob Sanders. Bob didn't know our coverages. And that probably the only time I've ever made a suggestion to the defense was that year. Said, "Normally, what would you think about if we put Bob into games? What's constant in 2000?" Yeah, and I said, "Just keep him down to cover, say it, I'm below it." My mentor, Joe Moore, put us on, Bob. And he says, "You may never teach him the back pedal, but it'll make your team tougher." Very, very prophetic statement. So anyway, yeah, Bob played awesome on special teams and he learned defense and played awesome on defense, too. So it's great, and many of our best players have started. That way, Dallas was unbelievable. We figured out he wasn't a linebacker. He's blocking the center position on kick return. He's a hard job, and they guys couldn't get away from him. It's like, "How can he stick some defense?" But he's-- nobody can do this. And so, yeah, we figured out he's out of position. But yeah, so it's a lot of our guys have cut their teeth and are really good guys like Dallas, Chad Greenway, Abdul Hodge. You had a pull them off. They wanted to be on every special team. And that's-- those are guys that are football players. Last week, special teams, huge part of that game. I think amongst many of the games that you've won, and I want to let you know every game that you have coached, I guess he's not old enough for it. But every game, since he has memory, you have been in charge of the Iowa Hawkeyes football team. Tosh, Mitt, would like to ask you a question, Coach. And I believe, say thank you, thank you, forever. Without a diamond, yeah, there have been a lot of changes. The one constant through, basically, my entire lifetime is I knew you were going to be on the sidelines on Saturday. And that's-- you're getting emotional, so am I. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, I liked this. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. A lot of good deal. Yeah, a lot of good deal. A lot of good memories with my family that you've provided, but as college football has evolved, have you gotten much pressure because there have been a couple years where it's like the outside noise gets loud? Have you had pressure where, hey, Coach, you got to change things up. You kind of got to get with the times. Or is it kind of just, you know what? Just trust me, I'm going to ride this thing out, and we're going to get things rolling again. You know, I've been really lucky. I mean, everything's happened to me. It's happened by just, you know, by chance, basically. No master plan. But the one thing when I got here, we were 1 in 10 then 2 in 18. I got an unsigned contract, and we're building the house. And I started thinking, you know, this might not be real smart. Maybe I need to go to school. But anyway, when I got here, there were two things, you know. I was old enough, and had been around Hayden Fry, Bill Bell check, and then Ted Marcher Broda. You know, I knew enough where there were certain things I just felt like we're going to do it this way. And I'm really open-minded about a lot of things, but there's certain things that are non-negotiable. So I had that going for me. And then the second part was, like, ironically, and this is the biggest already in my career, I never wanted to be a head coach, really. And this is the only place I would have left the NFL for, because we had been here nine years. And I was dumb enough to think we might be able to have some stability. We had five kids. And so we're two in 18, I think, looking so good at that plan. But just the chance to have stability, which obviously Coach Frye did, Bill Snyder left her and had it at Kansas State and Barry Alvarez at Wisconsin. So that was one of the motivating factors. But at the back of all that, like, my dream, and maybe if you get a team pad, I can do this. I still want to be a line coach. I guess my like, you know, that's my fantasy job, retirement job, maybe. But so my point there is, like, you know, if it didn't work out, we're going to invest everything we possibly could without being stupid. And if it didn't work out, it didn't work out. And sometimes it doesn't, in sports and in life. And now I go back to being a line coach. And as long as I was working with good people, I enjoy football and I enjoy coaching. I don't have to be the head coach in all that crap. Well, I just want to let you know. I have never-- that was cool. That was a really cool moment, Ty, because the amount of joy that I think he's Thank you very much. is experienced watching your teams and the amount of joy that these people have experienced watching your football teams play football the right school way. We appreciate you taking time coming and joining us in the hospitality this weekend. I'll interject to I'm not from Iowa. You know I broke a bone here and when I was really four years old my great-great-uncles farm but I'm not from here but I've been here a long time now and it's just that's what makes Iowa pretty unique and pretty special and grew up in Pittsburgh idolizing the Steelers and I think a lot of perilous just in terms of the way they do things and people think that then that's a compliment because I admire the Steelers in their organization but yeah it's been pretty good. Pittsburgh? Yeah I didn't know that. I mean it chucked nose my idol. I should I didn't know I should know more. I prefer St. Clair. Yeah. Hey nice to see you. I know I should know now without tough you are how handsome you are. The style of football with your teams play. Obviously the blacking you know I should have known that you were a Yenzer. I had no idea. So in good trivia so I'm pretty sure I was the last captain of the last losing team and probably the only well Joe at the early part but Joe Morris career had one losing team. We were four and five. I think we scored eight touchdowns of somehow one four games. I'll play defense. We could run. No big and run. But anyway it worked out okay. Yes it's certainly did. And these people are thankful for you. We appreciate you. Thank you. Ladies and gentlemen the head coach of the Iowa Hawk Out Football Team. A man who has been here for 37 seasons on this 38 Kirk Ferrets. Thank you so much. Thank you. Precision. Thank you coach. Good luck. I'll tell you what I love everything about that. Wow. That was awesome. Oh definitely. Yeah just just two men let each other know they appreciate the hell out of them. Get a picture. Yeah yeah you two do. Is it? Is it? That was sick. We have an extra chair. Yeah. Oh yeah we might be. As tying coach Ferrets catch up. Which I love. Yeah. On a Kirk's dogs. I mean. Hey they both got pretty serious. Oh yeah. That was awesome. Really cool. Got me serious. That was real or not? Yeah. Me too. Yeah. That was cool. Yeah I wasn't expecting that to happen. Never do. Yeah. That was still coursing through my veins but. Might be a little hungover. Maybe a little bit emotional. Definitely a thing. But nonetheless I'm happy you got a chance to tell them how appreciative you are of everything that he has done for you and your family. That was a cool moment. Thanks for letting us in on that tie. Go Hawks baby. Yeah. I think that's right. Okay as we wrap up here on this glorious fuel good Friday October 2nd we're going to have to make some NFL picks. Okay we're going to have to do that. But before we do I think the boys are going to have to pick Ohio State Iowa. If somebody can get on the horn with Stanford Steve to get his big hungover ass out here as well we would certainly be grateful. I think we need him a little bit earlier than we expected. Shout out to coach fans coming over here earlier than we thought. What a legend. What an absolute legend. Cannot wait to see his team tomorrow against the Ohio State Buckeyes. All right let's do some picks for this particular game. We will pull the fans. I'll say the team name you will cheer or boo for which pick you guys would like to have. Ohio State is favored by 14 coming in here to Iowa. Fans do you think do you think Ohio State wins tomorrow. Okay that sounds like a no. Do you have Iowa winning tomorrow. Okay jot that down. Okay the Iowa Hawkeyes student fan base has Iowa winning tomorrow as 14 point dogs. It's shot that one down for the Hawkeyes. Okay fans on Iowa. Okay let's go to one half of the toxic table at Boston Connor Connor Ohio State traveling into Iowa City as 14 point favorites. Who do you like. How do you like it? Come man. I mean look we just had Kirk fans on here and you see what this place means to him and how much these fans adore him. You mentioned the moment time. I mean that got me that was really cool. The corn the the environment the the blue skies in Iowa. I mean there has been a good day out here in forever and this is what we got this weekend so it's hard to like think about this game and not think she's 14 and a half points. The Hawkes you know like Ty said they might they might end up winning this game on Saturday but it is just one of those things. 14 and a half you think about that spread. I think it should be 20 Ohio State's going to kill me tomorrow. I think you might end up being Ohio State in a runaway. I'm actually pretty worried about the team total over being too low. I forget what the actual number is 44 and a half. It might end up being 48 nothing. That's my shiggest worry when it comes to the game. You know and we'll see look we'll see and again I love this place but boy oh boy laid afternoon to the night long day till getting there might just be a lot of tears in that stadium. No I'm worried and it's it's Ohio State you know the four letter words they say is IOWA but it's going to be a lot of OHIO. Okay so con man likes your high state book guys. Your thoughts on I don't know there's middle fingers lying it's not for number one. It's not for number one there so Conor is on Ohio State by 48 is that what I heard? I'm going to go all line shut up a subtle minus 27 on a half. I think deep down they know I think I think deep down they know and they're taking it out on me and that's okay that's okay. I still love the place but they know deep down. Okay so Conor has a high state by 48 let's go to one half of the hammer done Cowboys AP tone first of all tone how have you been seeing the college board and how do you see this particular game going? I've been seeing it pretty solid especially the Iowa games and then we just had Kirk on like you mentioned Conor Pittsburgh guy black and gold defense run game they're gonna muck it up I'll take the Iowa Hawkeyes to win out right. I'm shocked. I'm shocked as well. Let's say if I'm shocked at yours. The Hawkeyes all right now all eyes turn to college football national champion AJ Hawker I don't know if you can see we got cameras set up on the old capital all the way back there these fine people have filled up this pentacrest to watch us talk stupidly about football we appreciate the hell out of these Hawkeyes who've been hanging out with us. Now AJ with your Ohio state hat and your Ohio state hoodie on Ohio state comes in as 14 point favorites they're the number five team in the country they've already lost this year in a year in which a lot of people thought maybe they're going to go on a national championship run can't lose two in the first five weeks certainly now in kinnick how do you see this game going AJ and what is your prediction on Ohio state Iowa well I mean what Conor said 48 48 nothing right on a state I don't know if I'm gonna go that far I think that is definitely in it's an enrollment possibility that could happen but I think I will keep the closer away they come out there I was talking to this nice this this police officer back every beforehand he said people get rowdy here on game day especially 3 30 perfect timing tons of booze leading up to it unfortunately I think it's gonna be a tough kind of hungover type walking about 6 45 out of the stadium I think Ohio state wins 42 seven oh okay - 38 nothing is in the realm of possibility but maybe it's going to be a tougher game 42 to 7 says AJ Hawke over the buck eyes and last but not least to make his prediction of how tomorrow's game will go with number 5 coming to the home a number 14 and Iowa grad from Waterloo who just got a chance to tell Kirk fairness how thankfully is for everything that he's done for him Ty Schmidt how do you see the game going what's the final score who wins well you know we're playing with house money this week quite frankly and I'd like to remind everyone that after that win against Michigan now you start thinking about the future a little bit yeah this is a big game on Saturday and I know Kirk is a we're taking one game at a time but fans don't do that okay we're we're thinking into the future so Iowa doesn't even necessarily need to win this game on Saturday they just we just can't get blown out having said that fuck that Hawke's by a million baby Iowa 28 Ohio state 17 and then we're going to the fucking playoffs (laughter) - Hogs by a million, actually 11. - Yes. - You got to win a couple more games after this one then, if you want to go to the playoffs. - No shit. (laughter) - One game at top, Kirk. - Did you listen to anything I just said? - No, I'm not making fucking moron. (laughter) - I knew it. - What are you, what are you, sir? - You could play him like a fiddle. (laughter) - He's in his feelings right now. - I appreciate that, I need an ice cold beer stat. - You certainly could play him like a fiddle. - What are you gonna do with beer around here, what is it? ♪ In heaven there is no beer ♪ ♪ That's why we drink it here ♪ ♪ And when we're gone from here ♪ ♪ Our friends will be drinking all the beer ♪ - That's amazing. I thought this younger generation didn't know about beer, but it sounds like the lads here in Iowa. - Oh, I don't know why. - I drink beer. - These people would slit throats for an ice cold bush light. (laughter) - Camo can, please. (laughter) - Very good, very good, very good. - All right, I will make mine pick tomorrow. It's split decision here though. Ty has the Hawkeyes by a million, actually 11. AJ has the buck eyes, 42 to seven. (cheering) Conor's got a high state, 48 nothing. (cheering) - Yeah, all right, I see it. - And Tundig said, you thought I was gonna pick it gets 1,000 people, you're out of your mind. - 13, 10 by the way. - 13, 10, Iowa Hawkeyes. - Yeah, throwback. They would love it. - That talks ball. - They would absolutely love it as we all would. I will be making my pick tomorrow, and a man that'll be joining us right now will also be making his pick tomorrow to help us with the NFL slate, which is gonna be a little bit different today and I'll explain that here in a matter of moments. There's some money on the line. Ladies and gentlemen, the other guy, Stanford Steve. - Hey, Stanford. - Hey, Stanford. - The other guy, E.B. - Steve, how you doing, Paul? - Excellent, excellent. - Oh, no, I don't think your microphone's on. It's called a pedestrian mall. Ped mall, I do believe. - Oh god, yeah, so I was like-- - Yes. - Yeah, I think is what it's called. All right, we have to make our NFL picks against the spread. Week one obviously started with the Cleveland bronze, covering and winning outright, congrats to them. Now, the Indianapolis Colts will have morning football against the Washington commanders. The Colts are favored by three and a half in London against Marcus Marioda in the commanders. I will be taking we, which you're allowed to say. - Yeah, yes. - The Indianapolis Colts get a massive dub in London. I believe there are some Colts fans here, which I like, hopefully you will remain Colts fans if we don't pick up another win for the rest of the season. I think we do right now. Stanford, Steve, how do you see the game going, please? - Yeah, I just saw Terry McClaren popped up on the injury report. I don't like that. Give me the Colts. - Yeah. - Hot out the shoe. - Do we, is he playing? - I'm not that questionable. - I'm fit. - I'm fit. - Not good. - I know, that's what I'm saying. - A bit of a hammy. - What's that? - Travel dehydrated. (crowd cheering) - Yeah, pretty unanimous. And I think Connor mentioned it. I think we got the Marcus Mario to miracle game last week. I don't think we're getting another one in London, so let's go Colts. - All right, got the Colts across the board. - Uh-oh, love that. - Don't love that, let's go to the next one. Tennessee Titans Baltimore Ravens. Ravens favored by 11 and a half. Lamar Jackson missed a couple practices this week. They said he's sick. Also, Jalen Daniels is utilizing one of my favorite quotes of all time in his press conference about being a thermostat, not a thermometer. We set the temperature. We don't tell it. I love everything about that. AJ, do you as well? It's kind of a must win game for both of these teams. Give me the Packers here minus three and a half. Ty Schmidt, you and this crowd that is largely a Chicago Bears fan, going to take the Packers at a box. Now we're taking the Packers. Sorry. I don't eat shit if you disagree. Okay, Jets first. Bears.
