Hello, beautiful people, and welcome to our humble abode, the DraftKings Thunderdome. On this feel-good Friday, August 21st, 2026, this sports program begins now. Football! It is the greatest. Last night we had two games. Fernando Mendoza got his first start for the Las Vegas Raiders, and the Las Vegas Raiders win the game. So, Fernando Mendoza undefeated as the Las Vegas Raider. Obviously, he had a pick six, which the whole world saw. Had a couple dimes as well, a couple tough decisions. Great interview with Miss Rutledge at the end, in which he actually asked Kirk Cousins on the sideline, like, hey, how should I be, what should I be, how should I be handling this? Feels like every day is a learning day for Fernando Mendoza, who's clearly going to be the future of the Las Vegas Raiders organization. Kirk Cousins not playing last night. Most of the one offensive line not playing last night. Probably a good indicator of who's going to be starting the season for the Las Vegas Raiders, as Fernando Mendoza is going to probably have an opportunity to watch the game. Watch Kirk Cousins do his thing. Max Crosby's energy was outrageous. It was great to see him up and at him. It was nice to see the Raiders kind of do their thing in this third and fourth quarter. But on that note, that Texans defense, even the backups were outrageous. They were everywhere. They were swarming, which is kind of what they live off, the word swarm. D'Amico Ryans, as soon as I saw that team do their thing and D'Amico was dancing on the sideline, I sure thought to myself, hot. The Texans defense is going to be the Texans defense. If they have that helmet on and that uniform on and D'Amico is coaching that, that particular team with the culture in which they have set and who they are letting in that building, I believe the Houston Texans defense is a real problem. I believe they are game changer, game wrecker, and I believe that is why everybody keeps chatting about C.J. Stroud having to have the longest offseason in the history of any starting quarterback because that defense was certainly Super Bowl contending defense. If the offense would have played well at all, they'd potentially win Super Bowl last year. C.J. Stroud, still very young, first contract here. They've been to the playoffs multiple times, has won a playoff game, but people see him walk into camp and they think he looks like a bum. He is not a bum. He could potentially be an all-time great. We've seen it before. Was last year an indicator of what he's going to become at the end of the season or does he have a chance to go back in time, be who he was earlier, maybe keep everybody healthy and dominate the NFL? He's got a new warm-up. Love it. Let's wake up these eyes. Pretty sick. Let's break up these brain sensors, okay? Let's go. Open the eye. Open the eye. Open the eye. Open the eye on two as well here. He'll have a baseball if he needs it. He'll have a volleyball if he needs it. He'll do anything to get himself ready for a game. He's been like this since he got to the Texans. This new trick he's doing with which eye is more dominant, you know, because you put the thumb on it, you close your left eye, close your right eye, close your left eye, close your right eye, you know? Which eye is more dominant, you know? Because there's going to be one that's going to be off and one that's going to be on. And that makes you go, hey! Yeah. Wee! Wee! That makes you get a lot better. So no matter what makes him the best player he could possibly be, if it's one of these eyes exercises or if it's shooting hoops on a football field, whatever the case, C.J. Stroud has proven to be a leader, has proven to be a great quarterback. If he can do his shit this year, which we all expect him to be able to do, the Houston Texans are going to be a problem. But they did lose to Fernando Mendoza's Las Vegas Raiders last night. We'll be joined by Dan Orlovsky, who. Might be taking a victory lap about what happened last night and how Fernando and the Las Vegas Raiders looked against the Houston Texans' defense. Or he's just going to be pointing out some things that he had questions about as he was going into the draft process about, you know, Fernando Mendoza. Under center in college, do you know the number? It was like less than 10, right? Six total. Six total. In his first preseason game, do you know how many? Was it five? Yeah. Do you know how many last night? Eight? Eight, yeah. He's taken a combined double and a half amount of under center snaps. Just in his first two preseason games than he did in college. I assume this is going to be a lot of what Dan O is talking about. And then Dan O's going to get into the 15-word play call as well. And then some decision-making stuff that's going to have to happen in real time. We are still firmly in the camp that Fernando Mendoza's a guy. I'm excited to watch him continue to develop. And I, as an Indianapolis Colts fan here, season ticket holder here in the AFC South, hate that the Houston Texans are going to be like that. And that's just what their identity is going to be with the Meeko Rhymes. The Niners whoop up on the Chargers. Big time. Chargers did go for it on their own 31 on fourth down a couple times. Shout out to them just kind of utilizing preseason to do whatever the hell they kind of want to do. But you've got a lot of different highlights, too. One particular wide receiver out of Ole Miss, 33rd overall pick, DeJuan Stribling, is becoming a Brock Purdy. He's got highlights to him. Mac Jones has got highlights to him. His name is popping up everywhere out of Niners camp. And obviously they bring back Debo, and he looked awesome. Him and Trank looked awesome out there. And walking out with the boom box again. Mac Jones behind him. You know, Mac Jones is in his own little world. They have their thing back, it feels like. They have their moxie. They have their swagger. They have their coach back, who obviously had a wild offseason as well. He looks really different. Yeah, he does. Good stache. I would say he looks like thin, fit, like super in the stache, the hair. I feel like he's probably got a little perspective changer on life after everything he's gone through in his entirety. Christian McCaffrey. Christian McCaffrey had some stiffness. They said if it wasn't joint practice or if it wasn't a preseason game, he would be playing. George Kittle got some great news, it sounded like, last night. Yeah. It sounded like George Kittle went and met with Dr. Ella Trosh, obviously, out there at the Achilles factory in Southern California. And it sounds like they're saying he's in a good spot. And his goal has been to be back for week one in Australia. Last night, what we read online, sounds like everything is trending towards that. He's a freak. Yes. You know he is an absolute freak. But that Houston Texans defense is a real problem. And we got to understand that nobody who. No. It doesn't matter who's out there. They're going to do very well. Yeah, they are a real problem. And they were coming off a week one preseason game where they got slam bashed by the Los Angeles Chargers. Slambashed. Yeah. I decided to combine some things there. So they were going to be fired up playing their best last night. And, you know, Nando had some chances. There were some drops on third down. I'm not going to make any excuses. He maybe could have ripped the ball there on the play that he did throw the interception. But no, I mean, we're two and one. That's 66.6 percent or 66.67 with the remainder for infinity. So that's still pretty good. That's going to be a Hall of Fame betting record. Just so everybody knows that going into our next bet, whatever it is. We would put the thing over another. season pretty good you feel uh like you've latched your damn wagon to the right people do you feel like everything you've said about fernando mendoza is uh is something uh that maybe gets you feeling good you know coming fresh out of a shower feeling fresh you broke down one particular play the first play i believe for fernando mendoza like a 20 minute video i watched you know i left here why most you watched all of it yeah i watched the whole thing whenever he goes off the ball he's got to go on the ball the corner's got to come down fernando doesn't even know that he's got to give him a beat here he doesn't give him a beat because he didn't know that the corner came down whenever the y went into motion after the eye left he had to go up on the ball this is what you're talking about with you know everything that kind of has to happen in a clint kubiak nfo style offense and he's never done that before to your point hembo stats showed us uh in college he was under center six times the entirety of his college career first preseason game five last night eight of them and you're basically saying yes this is what i've been trying to say this entire time is that is that accurate yeah i think yes that's a big takeaway now he's had moments operating in the first two preseason games under center that have been awesome i mean you we all know that play against arizona where he rips that ball to benson and then there's moments last night that are really good it's just for so long he plays in the shotgun for so long and you get reps hundreds and thousands of reps and then all of a sudden it's this different experience that you're trying to erase some old reps and habits and then trying to build new ones and it's just i've said this so many times with these quarterbacks that are making the transition is it's just not going to happen overnight and so i think there's a lot of good to take away but that first play that i kind of break down that plays an interesting the first play that i break down that's the like one of the the big things is there's such a mental strain that has to go on of communicating personnel and formation and shift and are we aligned right and you got to get on and you have to get off and here you come and then oh i just didn't see the corner or maybe i did see the corner and didn't realize that now the way i grew up in this offense was that's a hitch route that versus press man you're the depth changes so if it was off corner free access it's five or six yards we want the ball out right now quick one two three we're trying to take that completion versus press he's going to push to eight yards because you want that corner to feel vertical speed and then you shut it down balls out but it takes an extra half of a second a blink and so i guarantee i would imagine that andrew ginoco who's a coach in las vegas is going hey fernando and fernando's going yep i've got it this is one where i've just got to sit on that back foot just a moment long and then i'm going to go longer but to the to the public to the naked eye it's like he just missed the easiest throw in football and it's like no this the these are the the steps that are needed within his development yeah it turns out this has actually happened before there is an answer to this that he needs to learn that that is basically what you're saying about that particular play right there can you tell me a little bit about kirk cousins not playing and same with most of the offensive line that tells us right kirk starting season we can assume and yeah how long do you think that probably goes for yeah i think kirk is going to start the season it it's a lot dependent upon team success would be my guess i don't love that but if for some reason and or way that kirk is starting playing at a high level and this team is highly competitive in and out of games wins and losses i believe that he would remain that starting quarterback for an extended period of time now if kirk is struggling the team runs off a ton of losses and fernando's just really progressing on the practice field then you're probably going to get to a point where you're going to be able to get to a point where you put him on the field um i'm a believer that quarterbacks are never ready you know it's no quarterback is ready to go play but do they have enough in their tool bag to survive and i would imagine fernando at some point is going to get to that place this season and when he when they believe that he's got enough in his tool bag survive whether it's intellectually handling protections seeing some coverages athletically then i think that you feel as comfortable as you can putting them out there yeah we want to get him to tim the tool bag taylor yeah that's basically what you've been saying this entire time what a good show yeah yeah i mean you're talking phenomenal show uh we all got you know and i don't want to do too many follow-ups on the cast there but thank you for what you did for us in that house up there in detroit no kidding yeah and it was awesome the amount of love he had for hot rods just oh my god think about now that we're dads used to show up on the sideline on thanksgiving day yeah and you'd say wait till you see what we do today but he was i mean people we all were like yo that's tim allen tim allen so even when we were awful he was like this star did you call him tim tool man you walk up to him and say hey tim tool man how's your neighbor no i went to him once and did the whole awkward like hey man i love your shows like big fan um but he didn't he didn't really like pay too much mind to me so that's scott calvin right there too yeah yeah shout out to him okay let's go back to football okay so our takeaway last night is fernando stuck with us for the rest of the show we'll be right back after this i'm going to learn a bunch kirk's going to be the starter houston texans defense outrageous did you see anything from cj that you like that makes us think like maybe cj does have a year that we all hope he can have and uh maybe this texans team is legit in a super bowl run yeah okay so last thing i want to make about fernando i do think one of the big positive takeaways is i've been really impressed with how aggressive he is with the football he's been very aggressive not careless not reckless but aggressive we've seen some throws so like it's not check down central i like that yeah cj looked sharp he's been very aggressive he's been very aggressive um this is that fernando stuff with the aggression i think that's a broken play by the way there's no way that that ball should be thrown to that route if that's the route but neither here nor there he's already got the veteran feel on what you're doing okay go to cj go to cj okay i think i liked what i saw from cj um but cj's played at a high level in this league i i would tell you the big takeaway that i had from houston's offense one kate stover who's i think their second or third year tight end out of ohio state was really impressive the different things that they asked them to do the first play of the game he comes back across the line of scrimmage of the block it's a really nice job by cj climbing the pocket so like the multiple tight ends being used i know troy eichmann last night referenced that so a little bit different identity of offense i think the second thing was they were able to run the football and then one of the things yeah kate stover's number eight the way that they're using him just pay attention to that this year i would tell you that one of the big flaws of this offense over the past and it got better at times last year was the running backs inability with the offensive line in protection woody marks is going to be a big part of that montgomery being a big part of that but some of those clips you were showing with cj the the blitz protection and the blitz pickup and having a back know who's his guy guy think of the jackson dart hit the other day that's 100 on the back because back's looking left then you got to go right the same with woody marks on some of these clips and just that's improvement like that doesn't happen unless woody marks sees that corner pressuring the offensive line sees the stunt and then cj is able to take off so like yes cj looked good of course and you would expect that against a two defense but my bigger takeaway from houston's offense was that it looks that their protection is much more on the same page and that has been a major major flaw of theirs over the last two seasons okay so let's assume the houston texans are once again a problem i don't love that because the culture about to be a problem as well the afc south might be the toughest division with the way jacksonville is looking and tennessee and dano if this guy's going to be able to see completely sideways with a helmet on we're all fucked okay we're all in deep deep trouble i like what he's doing uh there's a video of hallibuck we know who that is who stopped every puck in the gold medal match uh there's a video of him doing something similar in the back i think this is maybe a uh a super advanced euro type thing that's happening fire the neurons yeah the super duper which is interesting because he you know allegedly got the lowest score on that s2 test of all time yeah the test kind of went away huh okay so unless he's just complete psycho we we assume he's which how the buck and he's a goalie could be but we think this is also something similar to what we're doing exercises you know for the eyes and shit like that ocular movements um there this may not be on the same page but uh this is a serious thing i think there is something to do with eye and vision movement and firing of brain neurons we've had to do this stuff with our son madden you know for like um like occupational therapy or something like that where they've there's this place that um had him do all yep there you go all these types of things and i was like why are we doing stuff with eyes like this and they were like it triggers activation and brain neuron or something like that so i would assume that is exactly why some of these athletes are choosing to do it and uh he's an artist dude i saw some of the other uh stuff that you posted up recently he's been drawing good for him good for you guys good for the world learning the story too uh because obviously it uh affects a lot of people in society especially at this stage okay let's move along to the other game we saw herbert get one completion what a ball yeah what a ball now we had coach hardball on earlier in the week and i'll tell you he was bummed out bummed out about losing i mean he was like as we had this time to talk today and it's scheduled to be right now with the Just learned I am. My dog was down. That's what he said. He was super bummed out. I never heard a coach and seen a coach like that, especially Jim Harbaugh. Normally it's next man up, like we got this, we got to deal with this, everybody's got to deal with that. Instead he was like, man, I'll tell you, we really thought we solved a problem and it turns out that we did and then now we didn't at all. So he was bummed out about it. Herbert doesn't get a lot of opportunity last night. What are your thoughts on these two teams as the Niners absolutely cracked the Chargers last night? I think the Chargers are bona fide contenders in the AFC to make a playoff push and Herbert get his first win. I understand the loss of Jesse Mentor is going to be felt, but I think that Harbaugh, you trust Coach Harbaugh in his hiring process, in the replacement. Offensively, this still should be a very good offensive line. And I'm going to trust Daniel Jeremiah, who's talked about, even though Biotich is a loss, that they have a second-round draft pick in Jake Slaughter. Daniel Jeremiah was an analyst for the Chargers and obviously the best. He's had a great camp. And then they have, I believe, an undrafted Spomer, Jacob Spomer, who has done really nice at center as well. So offensive line is going to be good. Receivers are really talented and also they've all got different skills. I think Gadsden is an outstanding tight end. Omari and Hampton should have a huge year. Mike McDaniel has always worked, and these guys in these trees has always worked with these trees, worked with quarterbacks that maybe aren't physical specimens. Justin is. And so if they're healthy, I fully expect Herbert to be in the MVP conversation. And I've said this, I like in the AFC West, I like the Broncos and the Chargers more so than I like the Chiefs roster. Yeah, you went after Chiefs Kingdom a little bit last time you were on, last week, I do believe. David Njoku, also on the Chargers. I saw a clip of him shirtless warming up with Herbert. Freak, big guy. It's unbelievable. Yeah. And Herbert is a giant. And you talked about McDaniel not working with anybody like Herbert before. Obviously, we all saw the clip of McDaniel and Harbaugh on the sideline talking about a play call he just sent in and said, quarterback's got to be an absolute alien to complete this pass. And he rolls to his left, he throws it back to his right or whatever, and McDaniel's like laughing. Harbaugh's first response was, I can make that throw, which I love. I love that that was his first reaction. But yeah, here, he just said, you have to have an absolute candidate quarterback to be able to make this throw. And it's like McDaniel probably in real time realizing what he can do with him. And why was that throw so crazy? And what does this mean, you think, for the Chargers offense? Yeah, I mean, imagine an unbelievably creative coach being able to use 53 and a third of the field and probably 60 plus yards. You're pretty infinite with the things that you can do. You can design spaces. You can tack. I don't know how far this ball travels, but to the naked eye, it looks probably close to 40 yards and it maybe is 12 feet off the ground. There's just not a lot of dudes who can cut that ball loose like that. It reminds me of the, do you guys remember Stafford throw last year against San Francisco when he kind of was like moving to his left and threw it all the way back across the field to the right on a dot to the sideline? Those guys, you, as a coach, there's only so many spots that you can throw. You can attack her, your quarterback. Oh, we'd love this play. Can we get to this? I don't think we can get that out on time. Maybe we can't protect it. Quarterback's arm isn't strong enough with Justin. You can attack parts of the field and design plays to attack parts of the field. You just can't. And I think about it like this, guys. They can have such a vertical stretch of the field, like such a vertical downfield stretch because you're the fear of the speed. Think of a player like a Brendan Thompson and then the arm strength. That you are going to have gashes in the middle of the field at like 25 yards. Total gashes. Because as a defense, you're like, we can't get beat deep. If you just get any type of like at the line of scrimmage, run fake or step forward. And suck them up, you're saying. You're talking about sucking them up to you. You suck those guys up. Yep. And then you got everybody that's covered way deep. You got big space and opportunity in there. And with the way he's able to kind of put things on time, even if he's late, he can be on time with how strong his arm is. There's a chance the Chargers offense could be explosive. Can they score in the red zone? That's a good question. And you think they're going to be okay without Minter? I watched him rap last night. Yeah. His palms were not sweaty. No. His knees were not weak. No. And Mom's spaghetti stayed down. That's right. I mean, he was absolutely in. Crushed it. And the boys, I'll tell you, the Ravens look like they are all in on this new era. And their defense, obviously, last year was not what everybody expected. And Lamar was hurt for most of the year. We get a brand new era whenever it comes to who's running the team. Lamar Jackson and the lads still there, though. It's like nobody's really talking about the Ravens going to run. I watched this video last night. I go, it looks like they like each other. It reminds me a little bit of Seattle two years ago. Sure. Whenever McDonald first got there and there were some videos coming out from their concert that they were having with the rookies. I love what Minter's kind of doing over there. And I like how it seems the team loves this man. Yeah. Baltimore is going to be awesome this year. Yeah. I think it's awesome. Awesome. Awesome. They're going to be awesome. I did not sound like that, dude. Yesterday you said it, too. I heard it. You said awesome. Because they are potentially going to be awesome. I agree. Baltimore is going to be very good at football this year. There you go. Is that better? You think everyone's going to be good at football this year? Smart. That's a good idea. Yeah, you do. That's a good idea. No, I don't. No, I don't. I've been. I've been. I was just going to say, I think they're going to be really good. But there is a little bit of their interior offensive lines. Got to take a big step forward. They're going to be, I think, really reliant on a young player like Jacoby Lane. Zay Flowers is great. God bless him. Congrats on getting his money. Bateman's had some really big highs, but has had some. I can't stay healthy as reliably as you would prefer. So they're going to be banking on Jacoby Lane. Remember, Isaiah. Isaiah likely gone in New York. So they're looking for that really reliable second and third option in their past game. And so those are some question marks that will have to get answered. I think that there's some teams. You think they're going to be awesome? I do think they're going to be awesome. But how good is going to be dependent upon that? I said this yesterday and people went up in arms. Chicago. Chicago, I think, is going to be a good football team. Yeah. But they don't have a receiver room that is wildly. Proven talented for sure. But Romo dunes and Luther Bird in the third are talented, but they have not been proven commodities in the NFL defense. And could they go for a thousand yards? Absolutely. But that's a group right now that is not nearly as proven as most of the other wide receiver rooms in the NFC. I still think they're going to be good. OK, I understand what you're saying. And I appreciate that. I think Caleb is going to be good as well. The defense. So to what tone added in. They got a lot of turnovers. Last year. Last year, man. Any team that's getting like that many turnovers. And I'm not saying that that's a bad thing. I think that's a good thing. But is it going to happen again and again and again? It feels like turnovers are a little bit of luck has to happen as well for you, whether it's a deflection or a ball. They were getting everything. Now, is that just a sign of things to come? Potentially. That could be what the Bears defense is as we see it in this Ben Johnson era and they go forward. And then also we heard what Ben Johnson didn't say last year a couple of times, like our quarterbacks nowhere near playing good quarterback or something like that. Something along those lines. Something along those lines, right? Like even whenever they were winning, having success, I think Ben Johnson thought. Despite the quarterback? Yeah, something along. I forget what it was. I think he was talking like, you know, we're still not playing as good as we can offensively or as good. That's what he meant. I think what he was saying, what he meant to say was like the amount of growth that we still have on the offensive side is huge. But the way it came out was like we're winning without Caleb even playing good football. And then Caleb would make these magical plays that would be gigantic and help them win these games. But it felt like Ben. I thought they were nowhere near what they should be on the offensive side. And they could have won the whole damn thing last year. It felt like at certain times. Absolutely. And you just saw, you know, I think if you go from there, there it is. We're winning in spite of our passing. Yes. Not because of that. And none of us are pleased with that. Yeah. And when was that? That was December. Yeah. That was late in the season. Yeah, it was. They were winning games like it was a good thing. And they're like quarterbacks not playing good. And we still wondered like Caleb. Caleb's going to be good in this offense, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then we heard this a couple of different times through the season. It was like, nope, guys still not playing our offense. Still not doing it. Still not getting it. He's just a freak athlete out there that's able to make a bunch of plays for us. So it's like, is the upside for Caleb this year with a full another full offseason, a lot of success and can see what it can be? Like, are the Bears going to be so talented on the offensive side with those young wide receivers that if the defense doesn't get the most turnovers in the league or whatever, they still be able to be good? I guess that's what everybody's trying to weigh, Dano. That's what everybody's trying to weigh. Yeah, I think. The answer would be yes. If you told me that those receivers played 17 games and both individually took step forward, there's other players on their offense for sure. Loveland's going to be one of the best tight ends in ball this year. But those are two receivers that have a lot of pressure on them. Because if you just look in the division, Green Bay proven and loaded at wide receiver, obviously Detroit, obviously Minnesota. You go NFC West proven and loaded at wide receiver, NFC East proven and loaded at wide receiver outside of the Giants. And so everyone continues to. pound the table for Chicago, and I understand the why, but the expectation is caleb second year and ben johnson take this meteoric step forward in your third year in the league sure but those guys have to not only be on the field but take steps forward to being like true number one number two wide receivers they've had moments of it they've had glimpses of it but we have not seen at least in those first season for one and two seasons for the other that to be the case and that's the question mark in chicago outside of the turnovers Also, last year, six regular season fourth quarter comebacks and then add the playoff one, obviously. Seven fourth quarter comebacks, a bunch of turnovers. People say that's football gods there. Well, who was that like two years ago? The Commanders. Exactly. And then before that, it was the Vikings, we remember. They were on that magical road. Danny Dimes diced them. Yeah, football gods. This is just like what basketball teams used to be that relied on the three. You know, like at some point, you're not going to have it. And then everything's going to figure it out. You get the turnovers and crazy fourth quarter comebacks in the same season. A lot of people are going to be like, that's not happening again to you guys because we've probably all experienced something. But I believe in Ben Johnson, man. I believe in Ben Johnson winning football games. And that's how I describe that. Like fourth quarter comeback, yeah, I believe in Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams, I believe in them. So I just assume they're going to get better this year. Will they be able to win at all? I don't know. That NFC North is interesting. Yeah, very. That NFC North is very interesting. Reports out of joints in the first preseason game were not really great down in Atlanta. With Tua at quarterback. We know Penix is practicing. He's doing seven on seven. Nothing team yet. I believe he met with a doctor yesterday to see if he can be cleared now. What are your thoughts on the Falcons offense? Because we know they have weapons and their offensive line is good. How is Tua and is Penix doing seven on seven enough to be ready for the regular season? Absolutely not. You have to at least get real 11 on 11 reps in practice, let alone not having them in any type of game. You know, preseason game. So, you know, I would expect Michael Penix to play this year for him to go out on the field without type of without any type of real live action is going to be challenging. I would expect to to be the starter just because of the circumstances. It was sloppy. Preseason week one was sloppy by everyone. Tua was sloppy dropping snaps. The ball couldn't get out of his hand quick enough. I think Tua probably has about as little. Desire to get hit as possible. I don't blame him. It looks like that in his play. I've heard like it sounds like that and looks like that in some of these camp practices and joint practices. And so I think Atlanta is in a situation where, you know, they've they've got a quarterback that has been through a lot that doesn't necessarily want to touch the get touched by the defense much. And they got another young, talented guy that hasn't been able to stay on the field. And I would say. Like, I don't want to be disrespectful. I don't say, but there's probably a minimum of four to six teams that we could already right now in October 21 or whatever it is. Tell you, they're looking at quarterback for 2027 already. And I firmly think Atlanta is in that conversation. August, October 21. Yeah, they're going to be awesome. That was Halloween. Yeah. I mean, if we can write this down in October, I mean, it'll be a little different because we'd already seen a bunch of games. But you're a clown. You're saying you're so lost. You're locked in and saying that, hey, there's like six teams that we can publicly state that everybody would kind of agree with us that they have no chance of winning Lombardi. Now, in their locker room, they all have to buy in that they can. That's on them to do that. But it does feel like Atlanta is in the middle of an interesting time. Matt Ryan, obviously in charge late. Stefanski brought in his first year. No real loyalty, really, seemingly to whatever other than Bijon Robinson, who they just paid. They got some good defensive players as well. Yeah, young rookies. So, well. A couple injuries and suspensions. But, yeah, last year they were very good at rookie on defense. So, it's like. They've paid all their offensive pieces. Bijon, Drake, and Kyle Pitts. Oh, and O-line. And how many. Two rookies are hurt and one suspended, though. So, how many years, you know, are they thinking in this new Matt Ryan era? Because obviously that's a huge change taking place where he is now the president of football. I mean, if they're already counting themselves out right now, they might be eyeing, hey, you know, with this incoming draft class next year that's supposed to be one of the best ever. Maybe, you know, maybe we kind of just punt this year. We get, like, an Arch Manning or something and then we go. Think about it like this. Just realistically. Tua starts the year. It's almost similar to Cleveland. He starts the year and he's playing okay. They're doing okay as a team. And you get to late October, early November. Are we having a conversation about a contract extension? Given kind of what. And he's playing okay. It's not elite ball. Two and three. Two and three. Maybe three and four. Yeah. And it's like, okay, well, and with his history that, you know, realistically it has to be a part of the conversation. The same with Michael Penix. You know, you get to a point where Michael Penix starts and, again, he's playing okay and the team's doing okay. Are we putting a ton of money into that? And I hopefully, you know, Tua's gotten a ton of cash, so God bless him. Hopefully Michael Penix gets into a situation where he can. But I just think from an organizational, like, are we really confident in doing that? Yeah. I think the same could be said in Cleveland where you're like, all right, Deshaun starts and Deshaun plays okay. You know, that's going to be a really big question mark for them is like, all right, are we going to do that again? And they probably have their eyes on the future. Not that they're thinking about the next draft class because they probably have to be. But, like, so let's not act like that's something that's not already happening out of the ordinary. Why do you think that? Do you really believe that Joe Burroughs would leave Cincinnati? Because that would break my heart and all the hearts of people in Ohio because we all know nobody's rooting for the Browns fans. Even the Browns fans are booing their own team. Yeah, if it doesn't improve and they don't win, changes are going to get made, 100%. I think the Bengals go 13-4 this year. I think they win the division. I've said that. I think their schedule is, I believe, the softest in the league. I don't know, outside of Lamar, the top quarterback that they will play against. I don't think that there's a lot of examples in our league of a star quarterback and one of the five best, who Joe is, going four years in a row of not getting into the playoffs, getting absolutely destroyed physically and just being like, I want to hang around. Is it an assumption on my end? Sure, I'm not getting told anything, but I think Breeze went four years in a row with not making it. It could have been three, but I go back to it being twofold. One, the season in 24, which I think was that year where Joe and Jamar put on unbelievable performances. I think Jamar was like the triple crown winner, if I want to say. They scored like 35 a game. They were like the first team in the history of the NFL to score that many and not get in. If it's a repeat of that, could I see Joe going, I don't want to do this anymore? For sure. Is Joe going to get hit 60, 70 times again if that happens and they don't get in? Could I see Joe going, I'm tired of getting destroyed? Absolutely. Again, I think it'll be different. I fully expect them to be an awesome team, but if they aren't firing on all cylinders and a soft team and making a run, the changes are getting made and I just don't think it's just going to be a head coach. Okay, and I assume Joe Burrow will come out and say, this is nonsense. Obviously, I'm a Cincinnati Bengal. I'm an Ohio kid. I like being here no matter what. I assume that is exactly how and why he has to feel that way. Dan's just saying, if this is another miserable existence, because I think he even said, not winning is not fun. It is terrible. On the field, this guy is wildly, ridiculously competitive, wildly tough, insanely, insanely talented. And I think all any of us want to see is him playing those big-time games because we've already seen him in the Super Bowl. Now, you asked, have you ever seen a guy who's been able to do all those things, want to stick around? It's like, how long was Stafford up in Detroit? 12 years. So Stafford was in Detroit for 12 years. And then if you think about when he left, he immediately wins the Super Bowl and gets all the accolades. So Joe Burrow could stick around for 12 years and go ahead and do it. Or he could see what Stafford did and potentially go, have the time of his life in Los Angeles. And it's so similar because they both don't have really great offensive line, don't have really great run games, and both the defense lets up a lot of points. It reminds me so much of the Stafford days. And they both had elite receivers. Yes, exactly. And just like what Joe Burrow's saying and Staff's saying, Staff wanted to win for Detroit. The Staff for a long time. That is why he was there for so long. And there was a lot of people probably around Staff that were probably saying, hey, man, it would be so much fun if we had you on a team that would be really cool if we get you on a team that could maybe play in games that aren't Thanksgiving that everybody's watching. Maybe we get you in there. And then as soon as he gets with McVay, it's like best years, wins a Super Bowl, becomes an MVP, is now going into the Hall of Fame guaranteed, no longer just a stats merchant or whatever the case is. Stats? Stafford is what they call them, right? Instead of Mass Stafford. The quarterbacks are seeing these types of things happen now. Peyton leaves, wins with the Broncos. Tom leaves, wins with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It's like leaving and going to another place. I mean, Aaron, we'll see what happens with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Used to be something the quarterbacks never did. This is not like a normal thing. Players would get like one or two years and it would be like a fall-off year and it would be ass. As of late, it seems like really good quarterbacks have been able to find the right spots and go and have great success somewhere. So that is also haunting Cincinnati potentially on losing Joe Saburo is what the recent history has done. On that note, he's an Ohio guy. We can't forget that. That's Dan Orlovsky. We cannot forget that. Yeah, no doubt. And I don't expect that to be the case because I think they're going to be really good. But I also, we all can acknowledge. Hossum maybe? Hossum? It could be Hossum. Super Hossum. It could be Hossum this year. We can all acknowledge how all-in they are. They've paid everybody that he's wanted. They've drafted. They traded 10 pick for Dexter Lawrence. And I've said this, there's the only organization that I could sit here and say is completely as all-in for one season as the Bengals would be the Rams. And so we all know that they have put it all on the line for this season and the expectation is for them to be outstanding and go on their run. And if it doesn't happen, it looks like it has the last three years. Yeah, there's going to be a lot of question marks and a lot of changes. All right, last question. And a lot of people were saying, hey, we need to see his mobility, see what he looks like. But for that game in particular, what are you looking for from both of those guys? Yeah, Bo was about as clutch as there was in the NFL last year, specifically to Bo Nix because this was a flaw and an issue last year was just hyper feet. I want to see his feet calmer. That started to be the case as, you know, that back end of the season went on last year. There's still moments where I think it's just his style of play. There's a little bit of, you know, competitive I'm a linebacker type of mentality with him. So not as hyper feet. I want to see, you know, the connection that he has with Waddle. And then for Jordan, the connection he has with Golden. This is a really talent. Both teams are really talented offenses. Both quarterbacks are really good players that are probably undervalued at the position. But for the Packers to be what I expect them to be, and certainly Jordan individually, Golden's going to have to be a huge, huge part of their offense pass game-wise. And you guys know how I feel or where I stand about Denver. I think they're as talented a roster there is in football outside of the Rams. All right. We appreciate you joining us, Dano. Okay, ladies and gentlemen, let's pivot away from the NFL and the preseason games to college having chaos happen. Now, there is another update to the 5-for-5 ruling that happened in Colorado and then the injunction that took place down in Louisiana, which opened the doors for, I think, 16 guys who were on NFL teams who were of the recruiting class 2022 who were not able to take advantage of the 5-for-5 rule because the 5-for-5 rule wasn't put in place until after they had already declared eligible for the NFL draft. Multiple guys go undrafted, end up on NFL teams. A guy named Jack Clyburn actually gets a sack for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in preseason game one, but because of the ruling that took place in Louisiana, he actually was afforded an opportunity to go back to college if he wanted to, play his fifth year of college in a 5-for-5 because he didn't redshirt, and then reenter into the NFL draft next year, maybe build up his draft stock, have a different setup. It's all craziness. It is seemingly all insane. Now, there was a ruling today where the NCAA got a win where it said, nope, the 5-for-5 rule for this class is not allowed, but the pros are allowed. Joining us now is a man who should have the ins and outs of all of this, a guy who's negotiated over $7 billion in deals. He's obviously synonymous with the NFL for being a super agent for a very long time. Now, it's over $10 billion now. It just got updated. Sorry, the internet was wrong for the original search that I did earlier today. That must have been. That must have been two years ago. Yeah. Hey, ladies and gentlemen, also in the NIL world and now trying to do it right, I think, from an agency side in college and hopefully telling us what the hell is going on in his world, ladies and gentlemen, Drew Rosenhouse. Hey, Drew. How you doing, Drew? Good to be with you, Pat. Okay. It is crazy times. A lot of words there. The 5-for-5 thing seemingly is the most recent chaotic what the hell is going on here. We're seeing guys playing in the NFL and preseason games now potentially going back to college. Then again. The judge comes out and says, no, you actually can't. Where do we sit right now and how does it affect you directly and what you know about the situation? Well, we have a client to keep an eye on. His name is Daquan Wright. He was a tight end for Ole Miss. Last year, he went undrafted primarily due to injuries. He was at the NFL Combine. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. He got a $25,000 signing bonus and $25,000 guarantee. He was released by the Eagles. Claimed on waivers by the Browns. He's currently on the Browns. But Daquan was part of a group of players that filed a lawsuit in Louisiana where they got a temporary restraining order where he is now eligible should he be released by the Browns and have his contract terminated. Not claimed by another team. He would then have the opportunity to go play college football. This is crazy. This could be the first player to play in the NFL with an NFL team through the Combine, through training camp, and go play collegiately. I think it's likely to happen as his agent because we don't currently project him to make the Browns. I wouldn't expect him to be claimed on waivers. He's really low on their depth chart. And I would expect him to be claimed on waivers. And I would expect him to be cut on or before August 30th. At that point, his contract is terminated. And the judge in Louisiana has said that at that point, he can sign with the college team. He would have to repay the Browns, his signing bonus, apparently, and per diem. But certainly, he would make enough money to go back to college where he could afford to do it. It would be a windfall. And then he could go back. And the draft next year when he's healthy. Okay, so you even sounded a little baffled by it while you were explaining it, right? Because you've been around football a long, long time. And obviously, you have college relationships because whenever you're repping guys, you have to travel and recruit. And the way you've done business for a lot of universities, they're very thankful for you. So obviously, you understand college football. But now the business of college football is crazy. So you've been around this world longer than, I mean, how long have you been in business? This is going to be my 38th NFL season. Okay. Okay. So I'm 39. So almost as long as I've been alive. Okay. So that just kind of puts it in perspective. You even think it's absolutely absurd. But you probably, I don't want to speak for you, but your angle is like, it's my job to take care of this guy. I am his business representative. If this is going to be afforded, we have to take advantage of that. And how else have the convos gone about kind of the state of college sports as a whole anyways right now with money from where and how and everything? For you, trying to battle like you love football. You've done a lot of good for football. But also, like, what the hell is going on? How much of that has happened with you personally, actually? Yeah. You know, Pat, I'm always candid with you. I did not initiate this concept for Daquan. This was his idea. Nor was I the attorney that initiated his lawsuits or orchestrated him going in the transfer portal. But I do work for Daquan. And so I have a responsibility to help him to the best of my abilities. I also have a relationship with the colleges and the NFL teams. And I don't want to see anybody hurt here. Certainly the NFL has a vested interest in this scenario because if players are released and they have the ability to bypass the practice squad or not go back on the roster at a later date because they're going into the draft, this really affects NFL teams. This appears to be an isolated. This appears to be an isolated case to the 2022 draft class and players from that class who were, I shouldn't say draft class, college class, entering class. And only these players who have a year of eligibility left because of this 5-for-5 ruling. This doesn't mean everyone who gets cut can go play in the NFL, who's released from the NFL could go play in college. It's absolutely not the case. Nor should it be. This is a very isolated instance. But in my case, I never dreamed that we would ever see a player in the NFL go play collegiately. I don't think that's an ideal system. Yeah. I think the ideal system is guys exercise their eligibility in college. They move on to the NFL or life after college football. I just think that's cleaner for everyone. I think that's better for the game, both in college and in the NFL. But on that note. I'm glad this is limited. Yeah, but on that note, if one of my guys is in this situation, we're going to do it. And we're going to win this situation how we have to. You said something there that I think is the first time I've heard this, and you would be the person that would have this information before everybody else. He can re-enter the draft next year for the NFL. The NFL has been good with that. You're able to, they were able to enter this past draft. And then if they go back and play or they're able to go back and play, what was the ruling today? Do we know what happened? That is not pertaining to. To the case that Daquan is in. Okay, the NFL got. So today was the federal case that happened in Colorado for the 2022 class. So guys like Stephen Daly, who were part of the federal for Indiana, they are now ineligible as of today, right now. But these 16 that happened yesterday in Louisiana, that's a state level. So anyone who's done it at the state level is still eligible. But if you were part of the federal Colorado 2022 5 for 5, you are currently ineligible. As of right now. I'll tell you what, Colorado having a state law and federal law conversation has been happening for a long time. True. In a lot of different things. But now it's obviously into eligibility system. You brought up the draft though. Can you hit on that a little bit for these guys? They're going to be able to get in? Or are you just assuming? I'm assuming, you know, because the NFL has to grant players eligibility. So, I mean, I certainly hope that he could go back in the draft. If not, I don't see why he couldn't sign as a free agent. He can't go back in the draft. He would be a free agent and be able to sign with the team as a free agent because his NFL rights will be terminated. None of this can happen unless Daquan and his NFL contract are terminated. We're projecting that's going to happen. And I've had discussions with the Browns and the NFL Players Association to make sure we do this the right way. And again, we don't want chaos. We do want it to be organized. We want the NFL. We want the Browns, the Eagles who originally signed him, Daquan, everyone to be on the same page so there aren't any loose ends. I understand what you're saying. And that's why you've been a dealmaker for so long in the NFL. For so long. You're dealing with billions and billions of dollars. You're a good dealmaker. We would like everybody to be in on the same. Everybody has all the information. We're all communicating properly. We need this to happen quickly because there is a timeline. Now, I believe there was like a seven-day window granted for this thing. But you're saying August 30th, which is obviously nine days. Does that thing launch on the 23rd, is your understanding? Well, the deadline, I believe, is September 1st. So we are projecting, for example, for Daquan, that he'll be released on or before August 30th, which is the final cut down from 90 to 53. There's only one cut down. My belief is that he would turn down a practice squad contract, which we would anticipate he would get, and instead would sign a more. lucrative deal with a college team. which team we don't know yet because he's still with the Browns, but we're anticipating that he would have a market and would get more money. And like the idea of going back to college, maturing another year since he wasn't drafted, isn't going to make a roster and then hopefully take a shot at the NFL after this coming college season. It's crazy coming out of your mouth, you know, and it's crazy for us to hear, but this is the current situation that we're in. Okay, last question from us. Thank you for explaining from your position on where everything is right now because it does feel like there's a lot of scattered information about it all. It feels like I just learned everything I need to know about this current one that's happening from you, Drew. Now, can we pivot to NFL quickly with you? Yes. Con man, go ahead. Drew, one of your highest profile clients, Tyreek Hill, he's still kind of waiting in the weeds as a free agent right now. It feels like everyone wants him on their team. What is his status right now? How is he doing? And should we expect him to sign before the season or during the season? You know, I don't expect Tyreek to sign before the season. He sent me video yesterday. This is good timing of him running hills, and he looked great. And I said to him, you look great. And he said to me, I still have some work to do. I'm not ready yet. I am not pressuring Tyreek, nor am I setting a timeline for him. I think that what I have said to Tyreek is take your time. It's not when you come back. It's how you come back. We want you to come. When you feel your best, there's no sense of urgency timing wise. I think this is a future Hall of Famer who still has a lot of good football left in him. This was a devastating injury, but everyone's going to be so impressed when they see how well Tyreek is rehabbed. It's not hyperbole for me to predict that he will play this season when I'm not sure. But I do think when he does sign, he will be a coveted player. He'll be the kind of guy that will impact the playoff race and will certainly be successful once he signs. Okay, because you're an agent, I know you're not going to give away any leverage and not project anything. But business-wise, we assume that that's already going to be able to be taken care of with a lot of teams who might not have a lot of salary cap and they want in on Tyreek Hill. Do we think that'll be the case because he's already gotten a massive deal and he understands he's going to have to prove it for a year? What are your thoughts on how that ends up going for Tyreek Hill? That's a fair question, Pat. And Tyreek and I haven't talked much. Yeah, fuck, of course, yeah. Hey, if somebody wants to give us $25 million, we will. You know, you let the market dictate. So let's say we have three teams that are super competitive to get him. We're going to have leverage to maximize the deal. And, you know, certainly there's been three recent free agent receivers that have signed, Stefan Diggs, Debo Samuel, Keenan Allen. Will Tyreek get as much as those guys or less? I don't know. I don't think that's his priority. I really think his priority is to pick the right team, take his time, come back fully healthy, and help a team win a Super Bowl. All right. We appreciate the hell out of you, Drew. Can't wait for that college football showcase. We're less than a week from week zero football games happening next Thursday night. This season for, I don't know, a chance to become, you know, obviously immortalized forever, but a school, a program, a city, completely changing what it is, how it is, and how it operates for the rest of time can certainly happen. We watched it happen an hour south here in Bloomington, Indiana, with this Indiana football team. Them going undefeated last year, winning a national championship, having the Heisman winner, obviously selling out a stadium, brand new stadium. What it did for this entire state was spectacular. These schools are looking to do the same exact thing. The Ohio State Buckeyes, obviously Ryan Day has won before. They've had it. How many? guys drafted. the last 25 over the last two years 25 guys have left this team and gone to the nfl and drafted the ohio state buckeyes still odds on favor to win national championship how do they have a factory over there in this modern nil world how do they have guys that still want to come in maybe sit behind guys and come in and compete whenever they get it how are they able to get all the big time recruits that seemingly can catch football is better than everybody else they have jeremiah smith across from chris henry jr and we have not been told if chris henry jr is playing or not we just know who the hell chris henry jr is from high school and since he was a little kid chris henry jr is going to be on the football field him and jeremiah smith opposite each other it's just an outrageous thing insane coming in with another year of confidence and comfort is a whole nother animal i think that the ohio state buckeyes are going to have to have yeah i saw a write-up from a ohio state buckeye reporter i believe and they're talking about chris henry jr and we're like hey this isn't just a guy who's in the 99th percentile in height and speed in athleticism he's also very very good off the ball like a meat like this guy's just going to catch jump balls and score you know red zone touchdowns like he's running slants and he's catching everything thrown his way so i think he's going to be unbelievable with jeremiah i think his dad slim was hooper like potential nba who like i think was size and everything and i assume chris henry jr savings i think he was dunking for the foul line since like uh yeah sophomore year was that probably talked about that with you man it was like you sure you want him to play football and you don't want him to just go make like 400 million dollars playing basketball but obviously he loves football yeah obviously dad i i think huge part of the story and i think he's gonna i think he has like a mission like in the way he works and having jeremiah smith in the room with him unbelievable just watching him handle it all the money the fame the uh all the sponsors all the pressure from what a defense there's four eyes on jeremiah smith every single play that's no questions asked chris henry jr is going to get that next year so jeremiah is done that's going to come to him so chris henry who we know is a student of game student of life student of sport he's getting a chance to watch what you could potentially consider a goat at the position for college football for a year experience alongside of him and then he's going to pass the baton again it's like what ohio state has been able to do and continue to do with how many people they get to the nfl and how much talent they have absurd but they're not even the best in the big 10 so who says that they're going to topple kurt signetti down there in bloomington who knows what notre dame looks like this year cj carr allegedly stories or he's better than ever texas longhorns archie manning he looks unbelievable you know who else looks good marshall manning yeah have you seen this there's another one young people are talking about punting on this year you know potentially the falcons punting on quarterback at this year and looking at the next draft class i mean there's got to be scouts somewhere pounding a table there's a freshman in tennessee he's about seven years away from eligibility to seven about seven years away so if we can get our quarterback uh if we get an eight year seven year quarterback get him to about 14 years marshall manning's coming right down the pipe there for us he rolled out to the right drops of time turns that thing over by the way over that guy's head the amount of feel you have to have there obviously confidence moxie swagger you name it this kid's been on a football field since he's uh i think like three or four years old his dad had him in a hat on out in playoff football so good for him getting a chance to get some real playing time here playing a scrimmage i think a couple weeks ago this is a real game last night against uh somebody from is he they were tennessee they were it was georgia i don't know if i don't know if he goes to brentwood okay so it's brentwood is who they play okay so it's brentwood is who they play okay so it's brentwood is who they play so uh congrats game yeah was it yeah the running back for yeah his 30 yeah david gabriel georges who's uh going to tennessee the one running back in the country is just absurd yeah it's everything we've seen from the old school highlights of like derrick henry and like even you know trent richardson i think had had some of these highlights when he was in high school untackleable just a grown man does a flip somebody chops his knees yeah right where did he commit to uh tennessee i believe congrats the hype will get in the land because he uh they showed him before the game warming up look like gets along with everybody obviously he's already made a bunch of money i mean that that is something that's kind of taking place now at a younger age by the day it seems like this guy's unbelievable high school football is about to get better too huh so football player against a houston texans defense that looked like their houston texans won defense for the first half and a half a quarter or so then obviously fernando mendoza starting quarterback for the raiders rallies the boys watching somebody else play quarterback and o'connell gets a big time win but any takeaway from this game last night early aj for you yeah i thought it was good for fernando obviously made some good throws it has some throws that they always say oh you'd like to have back but honestly like i don't want to carry dan's water but i thought dano did a good job you know explaining that whole little situation hey you gotta take an extra beat here in your three step before you throw this if he presses them and the corner decided to press at the last minute basically fernando may have not seen it uh initially or just thought get this thing out of my hand because i've been taught to get it quick but i think it's a thing like you gotta see things now i follow along with that had to catch up with highlights and also reading through stats seeing them going for it on for i wish i could just been a part of the conversation like yeah let's practice a gotta have it play mcdaniel i'd like to see uh you know we gotta have him play who knows how many of these situations we're gonna get in before the regular season gets started but i do appreciate the fact that there is some teams that utilize the pre-season to work on stuff like clearly you're trying to work on stuff and don't really care about the outcome because boy the outcome of the games can kind of sway people i still believe firmly that next cba we're staring down two joint practices one one bubble game but that's what i think we got going on and i think they're gonna make joint practices a fanfare thing and a stream i think that's gonna stream thing i think that's gonna be what's coming i don't know how many more pre-season games we have everybody thinks it's going to be two pre-season games so they can add something i think there's going to be a joint practice conversation because i think players are going to want to have a say about this difference between regular practice and joint practice i think that's going to be the next part of negotiations for the players it's like hey these joint practices feels like we need to be having conversations about these with how hard everybody's going how much tackling is happening the severity of the drills and everything i think i think that'll be an indicator a negotiation piece going forward so who knows how much this matters anymore going forward but i've seen great football seemingly here in pre-season and i'm i'm very excited about what this regular season has in store for us that was the other thing i was surprised about the joint practices was that it wasn't as much tackling like a lot of the times whenever it was eagles or patriots you know if there's a deep ball contested ball of course they're going for it and everything like that but the tackling part of it itself wasn't as much so it could even make the joint practices even more competitive versus what they are right now yeah i think it's going to be as somebody that watched a lot of practices okay i think that's something that punters and kickers pretty good at okay long snappers as well especially in the second regime first regime i was working during pressure that was fun that was a lot of fun second regime they told me go get better at punting what are we doing here thanks chuck go do that okay i will and then i'll watch practice and talk shit i guess but practices are a good time practices are a good time and i also believe the pre-season is probably a a terrible time for all positions, okay? all positions including punting position I've told the story in the past okay where coach John Tierlink D-line legendary coach uh my first conversation with him was him coming over to me in a pre-season game here is JT Ray here on the left uh coach Howard Mudd on the right O-line coach D-line coach rest in peace to both of these lads that I was very lucky to be at the tail end of their careers with the Indianapolis Colts with Tierlink after I got blindsided by a crack back block on a punt return in a pre-season game and had the full thing happen in the middle of a football field after I walked to the sideline sit down on the bench still trying to gather my thoughts this large man who I had not really talked to before walks over to me slowly because he's a big man he gets off his car walks over to me puts his palm on my thigh puts all 400 pounds whatever it is on my thigh sits down next to me and he says you punt the ball and you get off the field okay that's what you do in these pre-season games you catch the snap you punt the ball you walk off the field you we don't care if that guy scores okay look they're about to score right now this is a d-line coach tell me this boom they just scored who cares nobody you punt the ball you walk off the field sound good and I go then he puts his hand right back on my thigh okay bruises my thigh gets up walks away turns around looks back off the field got it okay then sits down takes a knee goes back to his goes back to his coaching thing so last night there's a punter that needs to hear this message way more than I need to hear it okay we're talking about a guy that does not get into it much he hits high hangers okay a lot of fair catches not a lot of long returns he is very rarely in the mix I don't think he would be described as a physicality person no jk scott get off the field he needs to not be on the field there this is his sideline as well okay this is his sideline as well if he walks six more yards he's he's where he should be at this time keep going you're next to 45 and 43. get the hell off the field nobody will even know you're there they'll think you got held up somewhere else if he gets his sideline turns and looks this way as the guy's running nobody will have a clue so that is what I think jk scott should have done there's others that say he should at least attempted to make a tackle or touches somebody you know it is a football game which is certainly fair it's certainly a fair thing but I would like to say Hall of Fame D-line coach from his mouth to my ears punter if you're gonna make team in preseason you catch punt off field we don't need you in there with anybody that's trying to make a team right now especially cracking back on you right there so jk scott I would like to tell you the hardball is not going to like this at all no I don't think and uh shout out to John tierlink for saying this to me I don't know if Jim Caldwell knew that he was saying this to me at the time but you get the hell out of it you act like you're getting blocked something you need to go get velcroed on somebody yes exactly you need to go hug somebody and just get out of the way because boy when you're do like him using his momentum from an elevated surface coming down so it looks like like we got to get camera from bottom on I mean that was clean immediately there's no way that was a strike that What is kind of the takeaway from these preseason games for you, Brock? Because, obviously, we're trying to judge every rep on whether or not we think our team can win a Super Bowl or not. We're watching individual one-on-ones from practice. Obviously, we're watching preseason games. For you, what are you taking away from preseason games and kind of what is the emphasis, you know, for you going into these? Yeah, I feel like it's obviously just getting ready for a game. The emotions. You know, studying up. A little bit on their defense and trying to have answers when you get out there. And then, really, just, you know, going through your reads and trying to convert on third downs when you feel the pressure of the game. It's a little bit different than practice. And so, it felt good out there yesterday to be able to go out and do that. Obviously, it's like you get competitive and you want a couple more drives and all that. But trying to be smart just for, obviously, what matters in the regular season. But, yeah, man, preseason's been good. And the camp practices, the inter-squad scrimmage. Like, it's all great. But it's all just leading us up to, you know, what really matters. And that's week one and moving forward. Yeah, week one's in Australia. Safe travels. Coming back is asked, they say. They're looking, they're hoping for a week one return for George Kidd. Christian McCaffrey had some stiffness, but they said he would play. How does it feel knowing that you guys have a roster that is absolutely loaded. And if you're able to stay healthy, especially with the addition of Mike Evans, you can go on a run. How does it feel to be in there? Because, obviously, you get dropped in. Seventh round pick, 222. Very good football team trying to find a quarterback. Then you become one of the greatest quarterbacks. The NFL has ever had. And now you guys are loaded, primed for the expectation to go. But you also have all the dogs, it feels like. Does it feel like that? And what do you think about this current roster with where you guys are? Yeah, man. We're excited, obviously, just with who we have. The new faces, the new guys. Raheem Morris, our D coordinator. We've had all these really good transactions and things. And I think for us, we're excited to go and pick up where we left off a couple years ago with great work. Great roster, great team, great organization, obviously. So we're excited about it. Obviously, we've got to get these guys healthy come week one, those guys that you just talked about. But I think they all will, and we're going to just see what happens, man. We've got to take it one week at a time. Just what he brings to the table with our receiving core and just having him in that receiver room has been huge. Just for guys to understand, like, dude, this is what it takes to be great. And he goes out there, and obviously, he's a threat, you know, anywhere on the field. But, like, in the red zone, too, man, just seeing what he can do and just that it's another level that he brings to the offense down there, man. So I'm excited about that. But in general, he's smart. He's played with great quarterbacks and Tom Brady, Baker Mayfield. So, like, I'm picking his brain on those things, too. So I'm extremely happy that we got Mike. Yeah, man, he's able to get 1,000 yards with anybody, right? Yeah, that's it. So. Everybody. So you better find him. Yeah, that'd be on you. Yeah, that's what they would say, yeah. But the fact that you guys got him on the team was a mind-blower for us, especially for an offense that, obviously, if you have a deep play in one play, every single opportunity, a guy's one-on-one, that opens up everything else, including a slant god that is seemingly back in the front of the line with the boom box. Go ahead, Ty. Yeah, Brock, how has it been having Deebo Samuel back? You know, like, we all remember how dynamic he was. And you guys' connection when he was there. Have you guys picked up kind of right where you left off? And how comforting is it having that guy back in the offense and just, you know, around the team? Yeah, it's funny. We were actually, you know, sort of joking about it. He goes, it feels like, you know, I've been here, even though last year he had left. But yeah, he came right back into our offense, our system at practice, and he's done what he's always done. He looks great, strong hands, and obviously the playmaking ability, man, I think for us, put him in the backfield, put him out obviously at receiver and everything, and he can make plays at any moment and at any time. He's one of our explosive players, and just the, I guess, energy and vibes that he brings to our team, our locker room, out at practice, it's like, all right, our guy's back. So extremely happy to have Deebo back. Saw highlights with multiple quarterbacks for one wide receiver that's had all the headlines seemingly out of your guys' camp this year. Go ahead, Tone. Yeah, Brock, a ton of highlights and a ton of headlines for Deshaun Stripling, your second-round pick. 33rd overall. It's basically a first-round pick. Seems like he's been catching everything, and it seems like you guys already have a great rapport. What has he done for that wide receiver room that joins Evans and Deebo in your relationship so far? Yeah, man, obviously really excited about him. He's a smart kid. He's come in, learned our offense. He's got strong hands, great route runner, all the things, you know, like the reasons why we drafted him, he's showing it and proving it, but I think just having him in there with a guy like Mike, Deebo, Demarcus Robinson, we got a great room of receivers, and so for him to be able to learn from them, but also be able to go out and show that he's willing to be in that starting rotation, man, he has shown that at camp, so we're all really excited about him. We're going to have his back this year. It's a long year. As a rookie, we get it, but he's shown flashes, man, so we're all really excited about him. I can't wait to watch you this year. I know you're farming this offseason because you're always in your John Deere face. Always. Always got to be in my John Deere. That's right. Have no fear. Listen, if I'm not in my football helmet, I'm in my cockpit in my John Deere. I know that's what you're doing. What are those things that keep the. Scarecrows. Scarecrows. I know you're throwing at these scarecrows, these coyotes and all these birds out here, so I know you're doing that. What did you get better at? What did you get better at this offseason, you think? Is there something that you had a goal of to get better at, or how did your offseason kind of go and your strategy into it? I know it sounds cheesy, but the fundamentals with my footwork, being deliberate and playing with a little bit more sense of urgency within the pocket, with my feet, those are things that we watched on film that came up. I want to be more on top of going through my reads and just being more of a machine And so I think my quarterback coach, Mick Lombardi was on me about it, which I love and I feel like during camp it's shown like the progress from OTAs until now, just being fundamentally on top of it, mentally learning from all the situational things that happened last year, but putting those things together and just going out there and trying to be the best machine that I can be. Coach Lambeau loves that you're turning into a machine more and more. You said you were going to run more too. You said, I'll never be fast, obviously, but I feel like I can just get away. You know, you need 10, 12, maybe shit, 30, 40, 50, 60. Maybe I break through and go the entire way. Is this just something that you look back and watch film and think, man, I could have taken advantage of this opportunity right here, or is this just you're becoming more of an athlete because when you're hanging off the side of that John Deere, obviously you're doing full body exercises as you're planting that seed, hoping for knee high by 4th of July, Brock Purdy. Yeah, I mean, I don't know if I'll be a Lamar Jackson out there by any means, but there's always times on film where it's like, dude, yeah, I probably could have used my feet there to pick up that first down and whatnot, but I think that's always within my training, you know, to make sure that I'm in shape, I'm athletic enough to, you know, get out of the pocket, make plays off the scramble and whatnot. So I guess you could say that, but yeah, the John Deere tractor out in the field and pushing it around and stuff, I guess, helped me out with my quads looking like Bosa and everything. Wow. So his salary was nowhere near what he was actually pulling off on the field. We're Super Bowl champs. We're doing all this stuff. And then when he finally gets paid, remember he's in bed with Sierra and it's like everybody's like happy he finally got his money. I think he's an incredible American dream story in the NFL, actually, especially with how many people dogged him, even whenever he was slicing and dicing people strictly because, well, they didn't like him going in the draft. It's like, who cares? Are we watching what he's doing right now? He's awesome. He's never changed. And it feels like he is a sicko. Now, Stanford Steve says that West Virginia is going to be in the Big 12 title game. That is the only reason why I'm having Rich Rod on. To represent the Big 12. This is not a biased opinion. A little West Virginia love on this college football showcase, but we'll be chit-chatting with him. We'll go to the ACC. Obviously, we'll have Coach Mario Cristobal who led the Miami Hurricanes to the finals last year. Got a contract extension. Looking to gear up and maybe dominate the ACC yet again. Even though last time we chatted with him, he said, Clemson's a good football team. Clemson's a good football team. Duke's the reigning ACC champs. Nobody's talking about them. And Mike Norvell is obviously on the hot seat down at Florida State. Can they get things together? And then we'll also be joined from the Big Ten, Matt Campbell. We'll be joining us. He's brand new at Penn State. People are saying things are looking up and to the right. He's got Rocco Beck to quarterbacks. He's played, I don't know, 700 games of college football over there at Iowa State. Knows the offense very well. And then at the SEC level, we'll have Nick Saban. This should be an absolute blast as we kind of bounce around the college football landscape as we're less than a week from week zero kicking off. We had the AP poll come out. Top 25. The Ohio State Buckeyes. Number one in the country. Congratulations, A.J. Hawk The Big Ten reigns supreme at one and two. Georgia is the highest ranked SEC school and then Notre Dame at four followed by Texas. A.J., the Ohio State Buckeyes, obviously loaded. Last year, didn't make the finals. What a failure. Didn't make it to the national championship. What an absolute bummer of a year it was for the Ohio State Buckeyes. The expectations are win a national championship or not. Ryan Day has done that. That'll continue to be the expectations. Jeremiah Love stays instead of going to Miami. They pick up Chris Henry Jr. They lose a bunch of guys but have a bunch of guys filling in. The Ohio State Buckeyes have become a factory, A.J. How has that happened? And is this forever over there in Columbus? Yeah, I would assume everyone assumes it or wants it to be forever. And this is kind of how it goes. Once you establish yourself as one of the dominant teams in college football, obviously players want to continue to come there and to keep developing and putting guys in the NFL. But you're right. There's going to be a lot of guys that have to step up that have not been tested really on the field yet. And they're obviously very high star, like, you know, four or five star guys that are highly recruited. But yeah, let's see. Let's see what they do on the field this year. Dan Lanning has a lot of his team all the way back. Kirby Smart cooking down there in Athens. Not a lot of noise coming out of the Georgia Bulldogs, right? Number three in the country. Notre Dame, C.J. Carr obviously. Archie Manning with the five overall Texas Longhorns. And then Josh Hoover, new quarterback for the Indiana University Hoosiers down there in Bloomington as the reigning national champs. They got a lot of returners too. And Cignetti's got a system. And now he's getting five stars in highly sought after transfer portal guys as opposed to the guys that he had to pick and choose. IU's behind him. The entire state's behind him. They got NIL money. And they're getting to pick who's coming. Feels like Sig's always going to be in the mix. Cristobal at seven. Texas A&M, Ole Miss and Oklahoma round out the top ten of the AP poll. Joining us now is a man who has all the inside information for everything happening around college sports, both basketball and football. He is the authority from College Game Day, both the podcast and the show. Ladies and gentlemen, Pete Thamel. Hey, Pete! How you doing, Pete? Yeah, I'm great. Fire whoever made that graphic and put me in the front of it. And like the Hall of Fame coaches are all behind. I mean, that's yeah. Hopefully it wasn't like Foxy or somebody we like, but that's a poor job. It was D-Bone. Now, granted, D-Bone was put on a little bit of a time crunch. And we know how his brain operates in general, but certainly on a little bit of a time crunch. And I think he thought, well, Pete's leading this thing off, so let's put him in the front of the flying V here as the Ducks come together to potentially showcase to the world what college football currently is. We'll talk to the coaches that you referred to as Hall of Fame coaches, which probably will be all of them, about what's going on on the field. Let's talk about what's going on off the field right now. Feels like there's chaos. You told us yesterday, hey, listen, there's never going to be stability. Okay, listen, it's chaos. That's what college football is. We had an injunction to an injunction. Now we had another injunction. Can you tell me what's going on and what should we expect from this five for five guys in the NFL potentially playing in college football next season. Where do we stand right now? beat them yeah injunction junction sounds like a show teddy thamel would watch on like pbs or something yeah there we go um so today there was actually a reference good job what's your function a big big development uh in the winzie case out of colorado now this was the federal case for class of 22 five for fives all right and the initial ruling in this had allowed uh a somewhat blanket but not total federal ruling where you could come back and get a fifth year if you were a four-year player who had left colleges uh today the ncaa got a uh got a stay in this case which basically means the the rule the initial ruling was overruled so in a practical matter pat what this means is if you want to uh petition sue for a fifth year you're going to now have to do it at the state level so it actually somehow makes all this messier because you know guys like stephen daly went back to indiana for example if stephen daly is now going to play his fifth year he is going to have to you know petition through a state court local court he just he was signed on the premise that he would get eligibility because of this colorado ruling and that is now no longer the case and i've been told they may appeal but the timeline won't uh won't sync up so that this we are now operating on a state-by-state basis for anyone petitioning for a fifth year okay so to put things simpler for that daily case which is not an nfl case or the louisiana case correct he would have to uh basically get an indiana judge to say yeah actually you're good to play here for your fifth year you were kind of screwed because the fifth year rule didn't come until after you decided to leave correct uh now it wouldn't have to be an indiana judge there are some guys who have filed in other states from which they'd be playing and i know that there's a tennessee case a south carolina case there's a more than a dozen of these local cases so um probably again i'm not a lawyer would be smarter to glom on to one that's been successful as opposed to trying to climb your own path remember pat i mean we play in like what nine days week zero week zero six days from now thursday night yes so that's why we're doing this right now pete we are less than a week away from college football starting right now we are yeah yes which is awesome um and i'm really excited to watch actual games uh yeah so for daily for example he's going to have to he's going to continue to practice he and wyatt but they're going to have to find a a legal path now a different legal path to uh to get eligibility now the state case in louisiana that caused all the headlines yesterday and obviously the jarring optics of seeing a you know running back in the nfl or a defensive end in the nfl make plays in a preseason game and then potentially and then enter the portal potentially come back to college um this is not affected by the colorado rule so this is now exactly the pathway that these guys need to take you need to have the the friendly local judge if you will um you know create create a pathway for you to uh to come back i hear the chuckles from the uh yeah you're not gallery there's a little cynicism this uh yeah there was a little bit of a chuckle because everybody just automatically goes straight into a movie whenever they hear a judge grant something we did it with trinidad we yeah wow he gets uh another year huh who did that oh is that an old mish advisor that's a running rep oh that's it no actually they went to a different school thank you in mississippi but yes it is mississippi sorsby well how about what's that is that a texas judge where'd he go to school i saw a facebook post it looks like he's got guns he's got gun shop so what's what's going on that's what everybody naturally thinks but we have oh yeah we have to remember that all these judges are by the book better that's what we said pete dammel saying something else i would like it to be on the record that this particular show thinks all these judges are just by the book now with this particular situation aj has the last question for you yeah pete as far as watching a guy go you know spend a an internship basically out of the training camp with an nfl team and then come back and play in college is this going to be a one-time thing or is this something that could possibly come up in the future this should be aj one-time thing uh because the eligibility rules were in this because they passed these eligibility rules mid-june or whenever it was right and now um the guys were suing off that ruling once those rules were codified there should not we should not have these wacky optics again uh but it's this is college sports and there's there's a lot of local judges uh but i would be pretty stunned if moving on from here we see a similar path you're the man pete we appreciate you joining us keep uh pounding the pavement out there so we can get to the bottom of it all with pete i think he was talking about you whenever he said that guy needs to leave but let's move along because let's go from what's happening off the field which is always going to be drama and chaotic is what pete's saying and everybody from college football so let's go what's going on the field huge move happened up in state college pennsylvania last season obviously they move on from james franklin after like week five game day had been there three weeks beforehand and then there's a massive turnover who's gonna be their head coach who are they gonna land do they have no plan what the hell benny lamb may be the coaching hire of the entire offseason ladies and gentlemen formerly of iowa state now the head coach of the penn state nittany lions we can't thank them enough for joining us hall of fame coach ladies and gentlemen matt campbell yeah coach how you doing thanks for having me you guys i appreciate it dude thank you for joining us i i think you caught the tail end there of pete family talking about the chaos right now happening in all the injunctions how much do you got to pay attention to that type of stuff i assume it does affect everybody especially at the highest level is this something you pay attention to every day do you have somebody looking into this how do you kind of view all the off the field chaos that's currently happening yeah you know pat i still think we we live in a world where if you start to worry about all the craziness that's going on under around us then i think you can really quickly lose sight of what's going on in your own building and you know i think it's really important you know i it's a unique time it's a crazy time but i think when you lose focus of the 18 to 22 23 year olds that you're in charge of then i think you can really lose focus of your team fast so we've really tried to concentrate on everything here in-house um worry about ourselves i still think it's about creating team and the best team still wins on saturdays and i think that's got to be the focus in-house and that's really what we've tried to put our focus on yeah i think your answer right there is why a lot of nfl teams wanted your services and obviously you had been with iowa state for a very long time we just had brock purdy on he obviously thanked you for your service to iowa state you going to penn state the natural reaction from a lot of people was man what he was able to do at iowa state now he's going to have the backing of penn state which has one of the best i think sports support systems in all of sport i think we've learned that through not only going up there but also watching what they've done number one hockey player basketball volleyball you name it they're going on football we'll do a second one we'll do a third one we'll do a fourth seven hundred million dollar upgrade to beaver stadium over the weekend it's like they are all in on sports so the thought of you having everything that penn state has to offer the brand penn state as a whole what does that do for you are we blowing that out of proportion that you know going to penn state is a massive massive opportunity for you to take advantage of what some other schools have been able to do and how do you view that as a whole well i think in a lot of ways i think it's important to understand growing up in this man four to six hour radius of this area what this the history of penn state football has meant to the world of college football and i think before anything else in terms of revenue and all the stuff that happens you're in a place where the high school football six to eight hours around our campus it's as good as anywhere in the country and the opportunity to be around a program and be a part of a program that can give a young man 18 to 22 years old the opportunity to chase every goal and dream not only on the on the field of football but off the field because of the leadership because of the commitment and really because of those that came before us ever that stepped on the field and made it really important to play the game of football at penn state it's a really special opportunity and it would have taken that it had to take be the right opportunity for me to leave what we were able what we were able to accomplish and what we did at iowa state and we really felt like the value system in this community in the state of pennsylvania in the six hour radius around us man that that fit who i was our family and really our coaching staff and we're really grateful to be here i love to hear that and i think everybody's very excited for you and it feels like it wasn't a messy exit either which is normally how it normally goes and i think that's because of how you've handled it all and obviously how iowa state has handled it all and also you have an athletic director over there who's worn a cowboy collar in big ten football so i don't know how many other places have that aj has a question for you matt yeah coach obviously i know you've been uh you know on the grind in camp working day to day for that but have you given any thought to what it's going to feel like running out out of that tunnel for the first time leading your Penn State squad out on that gigantic stadium obviously have players it'll be some of their first time as well but you as a coach I guess how do you control your emotions in that situation yeah and you know I think it just goes back to what I said earlier AJ you know number one is I think you're so caught up in the present right now you know the the unique challenge that we're under of creating a team and creating a team that's ready to respond to real adversity by the time man two two less than two weeks come at us but I do I would be remiss not to say man 10 30 11 o'clock every night and you look at this expansion and the lights on in this stadium and there's not even a couple nights where you're kind of like man you kind of sneak into the stadium and you walk around and you say look look at this place and look how special it is to play in one of the one of the great you know the great places to play college football and um we're really fortunate to do it I'm excited for the opportunity but I'm more excited to give our fan base in this university a team that can represent the history of this place the right way obviously you sound like a guy that doesn't need an alarm clock but uh what is what is the morning routine for you and is the alarm clock is that the uh it need it does need to be that pat I don't need an alarm clock but I will take that and and we'll uh we'll make sure that's on repeat here for a long time see that here we go now we're getting better you talk about being one of the best place to play all of college sport that is very real in that song they that dj in the in-game dj I don't know if you've made any changes or currently looking at all that don't the timing in which they play music and what songs they play makes that place feel alive at all times even if on the field it's not going great they're ready to uh jump in and actually fight people for you now let's talk about who you have over there I know you've been playing for a long time you've been playing for a long time you've made your office smaller and obviously trying to change the entire culture over there to be your type of way you got a lot of people you like go ahead Ty yeah coach first and foremost I'd like to say as a native of Iowa and an Iowa alum uh I was pretty jacked up that you are no longer the head coach of Iowa State so it's pretty bittersweet finding out you were going to Penn State and I was probably going to be seeing you every year anyway um but congratulations nonetheless how important was it for you you know bringing Taylor Mouser with you and some of your support staff and obviously Rocco uh not only for you know the um the continuity that you're going to have but kind of being able to immediately build your culture uh right away right when you got there yeah well first Ty I I'm excited I am a fan of the show and I'm I'm excited that hopefully we can get you on our side I know that's never tough for you and I appreciate that I I'm a huge Kirk Ferens fan I love I have great respect for him so uh we have that in common but I I uh hopefully we can get you on our side a little bit moving forward but you know I I would say the continuity piece you win with people you know it's it's why you guys have had so much success it's why we haven't been able to have so much success in our past is because we have had great people in every corner from our academics nutrition strength and conditioning life after football to our our great coaches that have been great developers of our players to our players and I think the uniqueness of college football today in a lot of ways we were able to pick up our program and some of the nuts and bolts of what made our programs special and just move it over to where we are right here at Penn State and so I think to have Taylor Mouser to have so many of those pieces to come in and that were great pieces of the development of our players at Iowa State which is we had to be better than anybody in that just to even compete to have so many of those staff members come with us that was really big and and then you know to to not say and to have Rocco here I mean what he means we've been developing an offense for the last four years around him and to be able to watch his growth process and even what he had to fight through last year some really tough injuries and how that guy played at the finish of the season through the injuries he had I think shows everything about what makes that guy really special I think those were huge advantages for us and I think it'll give us a great opportunity to build the right foundation that we get ready for the for the season Rocco Beck son of West Virginia legend Anthony Beck obviously like to have a little West Virginia tie into any school if they want to have success you know that Coach Campbell um last question from me and for us is we appreciate your time here today on this college football showcase you wear a whistle all the time we got a whistle around the neck all the time everywhere we go not not all the time but we do have a walk through here in about about a half hour so I'm ready to rock and roll I like that what are you a soft whistle double whistle what is your normal oh no I'm I'm old school whistle not not one of these new ones that all these these young guys got I'm old school can't get a lot of spit in those ones though those ones you know you get a little excited they do get caught you know you don't need that I know you're not doing that that's why they brought you in we don't need any in the middle of practice people think you're gonna lose every game that is not what you do you're a winner man that's why Penn State got very lucky that they hired you and I'm sure the one that the most NFL refs use yeah yeah well and also I like the way I think my favorite thing about what the refs are able to do in the NFL and I guess college they do it too the play the down on the fingers yeah how smooth they are with that every once in a while you know kind of check out the refs and see what down to see if they're on with the side they're very good with yeah and then the whistle that double that thing sweet that's pretty handheld yeah that on the two fingers there yeah I like that I think it does affect I think the it's got to it's got to be the other one they got to put the down markers on one hand and then whistle on the other hand oh good call AJ that's guy that's blowing a whistle and done a down marker yeah you're right that's dad is coaching a lot of different teams I'll just talk to others talk to refs and watch them yeah why would you put them both in the same hand that's common sense yeah I I know but I know if you had to work with something else dude got to throw a flag somewhere you never know something's gonna happen you're right I'll tell you what the way you talk to ref sounds like a lot different than how I talk to refs and joining us now I don't know how he talks to refs now but I do know that I've seen it in the past an absolute legend hall of famer ladies and gentlemen head coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers Rich Rodriguez yeah hey guys hey listen I have never had a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty called against me never never in 40 years I've deserved a lot but I never had one I don't know what the hell happened but I got lucky I think it's cuz you're working on you know hey that's good call early you know that's good call early got to work up a little bit obviously every advantage is there let's talk about your team this year Stanford Steve just put out this morning his projections for the Big 12 West Virginia in the Big 12 title game now yeah yeah we're trying to run a sneak attack here we got one returning starter I'm hoping to get a first down you know I'm hoping nobody gets hurt you know and we go shake hands afterwards and wish each other well and all that kind of stuff now he's gonna come out and make some bold predictions Wow is that your first time seeing that is that your first time seeing that right there yeah are you kidding me what was it was this late last night or was this I think it was this morning I think it was this morning Stanford Steve put it out there so maybe the boys in the locker room haven't seen it well I've always thought a lot of him he's really really smart so there you go yeah that's a good idea Stanford you know it's a it's a big brain guy obviously naturally but I think what he sees is you bring in coach Trickett back to coach the offensive line you got some studs in there that maybe in years past we hadn't been able to get we have a quarterback seemingly that's electrifying it does feel like vibes are high then I hear you talking after practice and you guys soft these young guys fucking pillow fighting out here I'm sick of it it's disgusting I hear that I hear it all is that what you say every training camp feels like yes but where do you think the West is going last year well I definitely think if we played last year's team I think we would beat them for sure but the the biggest difference is even though we only have one or two returning starters kind of like last year you know we only have one or two returning starters from our team you know we we intentionally tried to find guys whether from group of five or group of six or or one double A or whatever guys that had proven production at other places and so they had experience just not an experience in our system and I really like the way it's fit you know we have we went from zero offense alignment that had started games to having seven or eight that have started multiple games in their career and that was kind of the same in every position you know we went out and got wanted one transfer quarterback to compete with Scotty Fox and Mike Hawkins and he's been everything we thought he would be and you know defensively we got a bunch of no names but uh our our coach Ali and our defensive staff have done a great job putting them together we're I mean it's still going to be a work in progress a little bit at times but I like our our athleticism I like the way they're practicing and I think it will be a little bit better than most of the pundits expect other than Stanford Steve he's already got us up there yeah Stanford Steve's really uh gassing you guys up okay the boys in the locker room obviously dogs only which goes to uh to your point there about who you brought in I think it's 4 000 snaps on the offensive line 13 000 snaps in total that you bring in so obviously we saw Cignetti do similar things whenever he went into Indiana which leads to Connor's question for you coach yeah Rod a bunch of new guys but do you feel like going into year two your kind of culture as a whole is established people know exactly what they're getting into the guys on the team know but what they're getting into and what everything's about and what you expect out of every single person every single day? Yeah, good question. Like even though, you know, we had 75, 80 new guys, there's still about 25 or 30 that were with us last year and kind of helped explain the culture. Not only that, but the staff. You know, we have a few new coaches, but everybody around the program understands the way we want to do things. And not that we're, you know, we're reinventing the wheel or doing something so unique, but there is a certain way, and Pat knows this, how we practice our expectations and the type of hard edge that we expect everybody in our program to deal with. And that's not normal. You know, everything nowadays tends to be soft. You know, that everything wants everybody to be soft. How can I make it easy for you? And that's to understand every parent wants things easier for their kids than they had for themselves, right? Well, we try to teach our guys we're going to make it harder for you so you learn to be harder, to learn how to work a little bit extra so that'll carry with you for the rest of your life and the rest of your life. And it'll carry in our program. And I think it's setting in. You know, I will find out as a result in the next year or so. But, you know, the harder edge, you know, that we're trying to get is maybe a little more difficult nowadays than it was in the Pat McAfee days when he's playing for me. But I still think it's possible. And I'll continue to do that as long as I'm coaching. You've got to get the right guys, but it does feel like we have the right type of guys in there in this era, in this generation. After talking to the team, getting a chance to be back in there and kind of feel the lads, see the lads, going on, it does feel like you've got dogs in there a lot more than I'd seen potentially in the past. And I told them what you just said right there. I'm like, I went to hard-edge university, okay? I went to WVU. Yes, I showed up at Tess. Okay, I did. I showed up at Tess at WVU. The rest of the time, it was going to be tough to find me. Did have a good time downtown, probably a little bit too much, but I feel like we built team chemistry out there, okay? Yeah, a lot of bonding nights at Pat McAfee's house. Yeah, bingo. Yes, exactly. Later after the fact, but that's good. For the good of the team. For the good of the team, obviously. Oh, yeah. Hey, listen, I heard five different stories from last night. They all started at your fucking house, okay? So I need to know whatever happened, okay? So hilarious, but I did go to hard-edge university, and I carry a lot of the things that you taught us and me through every day of my life. I think that's a big deal for this modern generation, and I think you've got guys in there that don't mind it, that they kind of like it, and I think they understand the benefit of that while also getting paid, while also having a chance to go to the CFP. I mean, we're in the Big 12. There's a path to the college football playoff and winning. We've won the entire national championship. It's a good place to be. I think it's a good thing, not a bad thing, that you're a little bit different than maybe some others, Rich. Yeah, and I think once they get experience, they like it because everybody, nobody's immune to being coached. People have asked me, how do you coach now that they're getting paid? I'm like, hell, you can coach them harder that they're getting paid. They've got more to lose. But the good players, and AJ and everybody knows this, the good players want to be coached, but you've got to know what you're talking about. And once the players know that you know what you're talking about and that everybody gets coached, everybody, it has to go by the same kind of rules, they have a certain respect for each other. And I think it's harder nowadays maybe to build a team chemistry because you don't have everybody there for four or five years. So you've still got to have ways for people to kind of bond. I always thought that people that go through hard stuff together make some bond. That's why Rick Trick is such a great online coach. They go through hard stuff together and it helps bond them. We went on our whole team to experience that kind of a result. Yeah, tour of duty certainly did that. Some workouts certainly did that. I mean, practice just on Wednesdays, go back, start it over, period, one. One of my favorite moves you've ever done, they had him mic'd up. They had him mic'd up, okay? They had Coach Rod mic'd up for a practice and it was awesome, okay? As a player's perspective, it was awesome that he was mic'd up during practice, okay? And Rich, now that you and I know each other a lot more at this stage of your life, you could tell how happy I was that you were mic'd up for a fucking practice, at least the beginning of practice, okay? That's when special teams, Mike goes off, let's say period four or five, period four or five, Mike goes off. They kind of go, him coming back and going, you think, yeah, that's what you guys, from the top, horn starts. We go from the, it was the greatest, it was the most entertaining, but also it was like an expectation and accountability from you that was every day, it was constant, man. It was constant. The amount of energy that you have to kind of spend to do that is very abnormal. So I and everybody else appreciate it, but it is a standard that's very hard to keep up with, I would say. I would say. And you know that, I think, now at this point. Yeah, and everybody looks at, you know, like even now, I got a lot of really good coaches, but everybody kind of maybe evaluates the film a little bit differently. I said, I'm going to be the effort coach all the time. And my standard of playing hard is probably a little bit higher than yours. So I want your coach's playing hard standard to be the same as mine. I want the players all to be the same. And sometimes they don't even realize it. Players, they don't think they're loafing when they are loafing. And, you know, there are times last year where it was like, golly, they almost maybe want to puke. You know, that they didn't even realize they were loafing. And so that every year, that's going to get a little bit better, a little bit better, a little bit better. But I don't have the patience to wait another year or two. Hell, we got to get it done now. Amen. So, you know, coaching effort. People say you don't have, you shouldn't have the coach effort at this level, whatever. You still do. I still think that's part of what we do. And probably it's the most important thing that we do as coaches every day with our guys. AJ has the last question for you here, coach. Yes, coach. Follow up on that effort situation. Like, do you show them clips of maybe how it's done from teams in the past? Like, how do you coach? I think that as a person that coaches young kids and helping out coach different football teams, you assume everybody knows how to play hard, but they don't. You kind of have to show them the standard. Yeah, I kind of, I like to show them some of our current players when they do that. Unfortunately, I'll probably show up more times when they don't do it. Oh, yeah. And they have to point out examples. Do you think you're playing hard? Because sometimes guys don't even realize it. So there's probably, I probably need to be more positive about that. Than I am. But the negative kind of stands out to me and I want to get that corrected right away. And because I took, I took a whole meeting yesterday and showed 20 of the dumbest plays in the history of college football. You know, like guys dropping a ball before they cross the end zone or loafing and costing a play, whatever. But I probably could be more positive. But right now I'm positive that we'll get our ass kicked if we don't play better. You're the best. You're the absolute best. You with the laser pointer at the end of a cowboy is, that's when you know you're in for it. That's when you know, hey, we're about to, somebody's about to get it right now. And nobody knows who, because like you said, everybody's getting coached. The standard is the standard. I'm excited for you. Now, actually, Tone has a quick question for you here, Coach. Yeah, Coach, it's a question. Everybody wants to know who's, when are you going to make your decision on Michael Hawkins Jr. or Scotty Fox, the quarterbacks that you talked about? Are you going to use the first two games against the non-power forward guys? Are they going to get both playing time in that one? Or is it just, it's a decision you want to make before the season starts? No, and I'll know. I'll probably know right now. But I think our first game's at noon. You know, I'll probably let everybody know at 11.59. Like, why the hell do I got to tell everybody? You know, I'll let the kids know for sure. And they're players. Most people in the program will probably know, you know, leading up to game week. But I don't think about that. I just want to make sure whoever's out there is playing well. And oh my God, can that coach beat the shit out of every other coach? Potentially. Ladies and gentlemen, the head coach, of the Miami Hurricane football team, Mario Cristobal. Yeah, coach! Muchas gracias for your compliments, obviously. And we will just talk about football, I guess, in English for the audience, not for us, obviously. How is training camp going? How's the team? Obviously, you have high expectations now for any team you're coaching at Miami. I think what you've done over the last two years has put expectation levels forever very high. Congratulations on that. How do you feel about this year's team? I don't want to say trying to keep up with last year's team, but separate themselves from last year while also being great. Yeah, it's a 2026 team, and we've made that clear. No one, this is not last year's team, tied into last year's accomplishments, and it's about as hot and as muggy as it can get. And we have taken everybody, every player, every coach, all the way to the edge, and we've still got two weeks to do some more. And there's been a lot of progress and a lot more to be done, but it's been a physical camp. We've knocked each other around really good, and we do feel like we're building more competitive depth, but miles to go, man. You know, you see a lot of great stuff, but miles to go. Okay, so you talk about, you know, it's muggy, it's hot, we're battling. It's a different team than last year, and we just saw a clip of Reuben Bain at Tampa Bay Buccaneer practice an hour afterwards, kind of working the hoop and working the drill. And he gave a stat today, I believe, about the number of stats he had last year in the fourth quarter versus every other quarter. And then we think during pro days or recruiting visits, I forget what it was, Bain was in his shoulder pads at the pool talking to like the next class that was potentially coming here. The culture being instituted down there in Miami, a lot of distractions, obviously, down there in South Florida. But having that all-in dog-fight-everybody mentality culture being in place, how comforting is that for you? And is that, everyday process still trying to beat it into folks like we just heard Coach Rod talking about what he's trying to establish at West Virginia? Well, I think two things. Number one, you either create distractions or you just don't. I don't buy into that. There's a lot of distractions down here. I mean, you're going off the high dive in a bikini underwear. That might cause distractions, but you either choose distractions or you choose not to have them. Okay, it's not a bikini. It was a Speedo. Thank you. Please have some respect, Kay, as a national champion. You know, Val, what I think you would enjoy is that Ruben Bain is still on the thread with all the defense alignment, and he's in on tape, he's in on drill work, and he is absolutely ripping people's butts if they ain't doing it to the standard. And I think you're getting the same from Keontae Scott, C.J. Daniels, you know, C.C. Mino. So it's almost like these guys have taken it upon themselves to become like culture enforcers, and that influence has been strong. Our guys feel it, and it's played out in a manner where we're getting better. You know, this time if you want to go, you want to toughen up, you want to become more callous, you want to build resilience, and you want to find out what your identity is, well, part of that is making sure that you're becoming callous, man. You can deal with all the crap that we throw at you during camp and fight through pain and discomfort. This certainly is not the time for ease and comfort, right? Yeah, definitely not. And I think obviously it's worked for you quickly down there. You talked about Ruben Bain still getting on everybody about what the culture is at Miami and what you guys have established. I think Coach Saban told the story about Julio Jones, went back to Alabama and was working out, and he watched like a summer practice happen or something like that, and it was a bunch of wide receivers. And I guess Julio called them all over and said, this is not how this goes at all. And Nick Saban credits that for being how and why it took place. So your players doing that for you, congratulations. It's not an easy thing to accomplish. AJ has a question for you, Coach. Yeah, Coach, you mentioned you've taken your players and your coaches to the edge throughout this training camp so far. I guess where is the edge? How do you know where the edge is to where you do have to maybe possibly back off a bit? We know it's crazy hot down there. It's physical. It's what you do. But, yeah, where do you draw the line? You know, everybody's got to get better. You know, I often like – I lose my mind when people say, well, you have to find players that love football. Well, that's bullshit. You've got to find coaches that love football too because if they love it, they'll do whatever it takes to be 1-0. And so we've got to put coaches in adverse situations as well. You know, I might put something on the script and blow the horn and say, no, man, coming out one yard line or going the other way, fourth and one, after running some extra games. Astros or whatever. We have to test everybody. And when I say the edge, it's that point where you're going to have a breakdown or a breakthrough. And somehow, someway, we've got to coach, teach, guide, and then just flat out push to get a breakthrough, right? That's the only way to get better. And the more competition we create, like legitimate competition, not just, you know, BS stuff to throw this guy in there just to compete, but, like, create, like, dogs getting after dogs, iron sharpens iron, and every potential, every possible drill we can. And then pitting the coordinators and the coaches against each other. I mean, the best part about it is watching the O-line, D-line coach beef, you know? And watching the wide receiver coaches and the DB coaches. 10-second, 10-second route right there. Yeah, right, yeah. It's almost like old-school WrestleMania. Like the battle, you know, like the Royal Rumble, right? It's just all kinds of chaotic noise, intensity, physicality going on. And in all that chaos, when everybody's losing their heads, we've got to teach our people to keep their heads and play ball and play the next play. So. Yeah. Really, really good stuff for camp. And, again, we've improved a lot, but we're not where we need to be yet. We have a lot of work to do. You're either going to have a breakdown or a breakthrough. That's a bar. Hey, listen, that was a bar. As it was coming out, you knew it was a bar, too. It was like, as I was saying, and you talk about pushing the edge. Do you watch the gringos down there? Do we worry, you know, because the sun is real down there. You know, that is something that my particular Caucasoid, not good. I mean, I almost died doing game day down there. I couldn't imagine practice. I don't know if you'd ever recruit me down there. But, you know, I would like a mucho scrossiest water break a little bit earlier. Yeah. The heat index, you know, it gets up there. I think we had 107, 110 or whatnot. But, you know, we're mindful of it. You know, we do it strategically and smart. But, I mean, there are going to be games that we are playing and that kind of stuff. So, you have to get after it, man. You can handle it. You know, you've already proven that. It's your kind of stuff, man. Well, it's a huge advantage. We talk about it in the NFL a lot. Like teams that go in the north that have to travel down to Miami in the season. Humidity. It's just a completely different conditioning animal. It feels like you guys training in there certainly helps going forward. Let's talk about some of the team now that you have. You know what? I do want to add, if I could for one second. If you look at Miami's, like, their national record for home wins, 58 home wins in a row, right? In those years, I think last was 1994, if I'm not mistaken. Well, back then, you weren't relegated to TV times and kickoffs. You chose your home kickoff times. Well, about 85%, 95% of those were at noon down here in South. And you can imagine teams traveling here where there's 100 and 510 heat index. That plays a big role, man. Yeah. Hey, you know, we're close to the equator here. At noon, that thing's running. There's nowhere to hide. That is a Caribbean city down there. It is. That's what I'm talking about. You get a team from Big Ten travel down there looking like my ass down there. You know, we're turning tomato red before the game even starts. That's quite an advantage. That is quite an advantage. Now you guys got to play primetime. Everybody's expecting you to continue to go on a run. You got a quarterback from the ACC champs. Go ahead, Ty. Yeah, Coach, how impressed have you been with Darian Mensah so far? A lot of the reports, and again, we're not down there, so who knows? You kind of take everything with a grain of salt. But they've talked about how impressive he's been, how unreal, you know, like almost picking up right where you guys left off last year. So how impressed have you been with him? And how has the team kind of, you know, taken to him being that it is his first year there? He's a dog, man. He really is. I mean, you know, we've been lucky, and I feel like it's a broken record type of scenario. He's another guy that absolutely has no worries or concerns about personal accolades. He wants to win. He wants to see his teammates do well. He is relentless about getting in here, watching the film, pushing himself, pushing his teammates. Insane energy. Like, you can't get him in a bad mood. And then what he does on the field between pocket presence, awareness, delivering the ball on the money, knowing where to go with the football, another guy that understands. The line of scrimmage really, really well. Can get to the right play, runner pass, autonomy, you know, in his hands as it relates to the offense. This guy is special. And again, he's a special human being. He's very, very driven. All he's worried about is going 1-0, man. Yeah, 1-0 would be great. He's got a guy he's throwing the ball to that might be one of one. Go ahead, Con Man. Yeah, Coach, talking about Malachi Toney. It feels like he took over college football immediately last year. What have you seen from him year one to year two? You talk about culture, guys. It feels like he's one of the hardest workers. Has he grown his game? And how big has he been for Mensah and him coming in right away and having that weapon? Yeah, you should follow him around one day. By the way, he did tell me he wanted to send you guys some book bags. He has some pretty cool book bags. Yeah, we'd like them. I love book bags. I love going to class with them. You absolutely never went to class. But anyways, we'll get those book bags. Yo, Swig! Super academia, dude. Malachi Toney is, man, again, he's just different. I feel like, again, we're blessed with a bunch of dudes that get it. The best part about him, he thinks he's nowhere near his potential. Like, that guy is relentless in his pursuit to be the absolute best he can be. The thing you'll like about him, he's about 12 pounds heavier. Like, he is rocked up. His XL, D-cell rate, stop-and-go rate, and just flat-out top-end speed have reached new personal best. So, you can expect a better version of Malachi Toney this year. And he keeps working off, Susan. You know, yo, Swig. Poor Bibliotech, too. A lot of that. He was at the library, wasn't he? He's been doing a lot of that. I know. He was working with JSN. See, dude. In jean shorts. Yeah, see? Yes, he was. He was down at Antonio Brown's wide receiver camp, I think, wearing, like, three-quarter-length jean shorts, just cutting everybody up. It was unbelievable watching the work ethic from all of your guys. Last question has to be brought up. You're not going to like it. You are not going to like what is about to be asked. But it has to be asked. It's a college football show. It's a college football showcase. Tone has the last question for you. Yeah, Coach, I love that this fell on me because you know and I know that the ACC is not down. But the national narrative is that the ACC is down. I know there's a lot of good teams. There's Clemson. There's Louisville. There's SMU. There's, you know, there's still all the Virginia Tech is back. I know it all. So I don't have to tell that to you. Does that put any pressure on you when people say, oh, Miami's got to go 11-1 or 12-0 to make the playoffs? Does that creep into your brain at all during this? No, I think my parents were wiring me differently. I think people that live their lives in narratives and predictions and all that bullshit, they think they failed the human race and their kids. I think you look at the record of the ACC in the postseason and the way we played. And look, at the end of the day, we had a good run. We didn't finish it. But our losses came against teams in our conference. And, you know, I think it's at some point in time we've got to see things for what. They are instead of creating narratives like I'm offended when they say Miami should have beat these teams. Well, maybe those teams are really good teams that we should have looked at in a more prestigious light. You know, there's really good football. There's really good coaching. Schematically, there's all kinds of great. And it's a league of great quarterbacks as well. We're at the end of the day. Call it what it is. Who had the most trench players drafted in the first round? The ACC did. So probably a member of the conference. Looking forward to another great year. And as far as narratives, brother. is the best salesman in the history of ball i mean he's a great recruiter but if he ever gets fired he'll be the best used car salesman in south florida i guarantee no doubt you got a couple dealerships he calls me up with this acc bullshit oh what's he saying hey let's remember acc good conference he just did it right there is that this story he's telling you as well yeah he's always trying to convince me that the acc is better than the sec the sec has nine teams in the top 25 that's all i know it's a deep conference it just is now i know that the big 10 is a really good conference and getting better when it comes to depth but really good at the top with you know high state oregon and so but anyway it is what it is but he's never going to convince me never you all right well miami acc school ended up in the national championship against big 10 school so i assume he could always just throw that in your face and say who lasted longer the acc did let's talk about the sec you were on here to represent the sec so thank you for taking that role and running with it immediately upon getting on air uh georgia highest ranked sec school obviously texas is also ranked up there you have texas a&m old miss oklahoma lsu a plethora of sec schools ranked after you kind of get out of the top five there your thoughts on where the sec is kind of viewed right now and how this season is going to go and is kirby legitimately the hope for the sec to kind of get college football title and crown back to the south right well you know i talked kirby and sark both and i think both those guys have really really good teams and i think they're probably the two teams that at least on paper looking at the season probably have the most good teams and i think they're probably the two teams that have the most the best chance to be successful and maybe go a long way in the playoffs i think there's other teams that definitely can challenge them you mentioned them including alabama who has a lot of unknowns and may be able to sneak up on people a little bit this year um under the radar but um i like georgia's team and you know what i've noticed about you know this new era of college football with lots of transfers and changing rosters the people that can keep their players and they have an aging team like georgia had a very young team last year they're going to be an older team this year i think texas is going to be a little bit more mature as a team this year and i think that gives you a huge advantage indiana last year was a very mature team when it come to age experience of players that matters when you got 23 and 24 year old guys playing it's a lot different 18 and 19 five for five happening there so there is potentially going to be to be 23 and 24 year olds because your clock starts at 19 the latest so 24 seemingly the oldest you can be going forward there will be some exempt exceptions going forward we assume but 24 should be the oldest but there was 25 26 there was there was a long time 28 year old the covid years really gave some leniency it felt like in the courts where people could continue to play especially if they're making money feels like we're getting a handle of it while injunctions are happening all over the place let's continue to talk on the field go ahead aj for coach yeah coach what are your uh expectations we had matt campbell head coach of penn state on he's stepping into that role what are your expectations for them people think their their schedule might be like somewhat favorsome for them avoiding some of the bigger teams in the big 10 but what do you expect from him this year well you know i think matt campbell's a really good coach i think penn state is a an outstanding job you know it's so difficult and i don't think fans understand this sometimes they say we got a lot of new players in the portal and they talk about all the players that they got you know what i mean but they lost that many players too like lane says everybody says we got 53 new players at lsu well but we lost 53 players that's the only way we get the other 53. so you never really know exactly you know how good a team's going to be in transition and if you're fortunate which you know kirk signetti probably did the best job of anybody in transition in bringing players with him that had a significant impact and building on the players that he had there and i think matt campbell has an opportunity to do the same thing at penn state maybe not as immediate but i do think he's a very good coach and i think he'll do a good job there expectations you know i mean to me expectations are useless in the coaching profession i mean everybody thinks that i have to meet expectations i i always coach like i had to meet my expectation my expectation was we want to be the best team we can be and get everybody on the team playing as well as i can i didn't give a damn about what some guy running around in his mom's basement in his underwear thought about what kind of team we had or what what kind of team we should have so i think expectations fine bomb wasn't wearing underwear in the basement okay that is that guy too okay even if he's wearing pants as well i appreciate you saying the expectations on yourself should obviously be a bunch higher than outside but at penn state matt campbell is going to be expected to win i mean that's why they fired a lot of guys in the middle of the season whatever the case is that's big ball these days it's big business as well uh last question obviously as we will transition to a digital college football showcase with coach saban as we return back to the little league world series in about two minutes or so let's go down to alabama go ahead con man yeah coach always a pleasure you look fantastic but alabama has this quarterback competition going on is that tough for a team having that competition happening or does the team kind of know early on who's it going to be and also if you just want to announce who the starting quarterback is i think it's going to be a lot of fun i think it's going to be tough for alabama is this year feel free to do that yeah i don't really know who's the start it's going to be i think both guys are probably pretty capable they're a little different you know keaton russell's a little bit more athletic can run it uh he's a good passer though i don't know where his decision making and development is relative to the staff the other guy mac has a little more experience so i don't know exactly where they're at with that i think it's going to be tough for them to play better so that the quarterback whoever it is has an opportunity to play better because you know i thought ty simpson was under a hell of a lot of pressure the second half of the season all the time and their ability to run the ball and stay in favorable down the distance is going to have something to do with that as well but I do not know who the starting quarterback is going to be um and I have watched you know some of the tape and I've been very impressed with both guys they're different when Keelan is more of a playmaker because of his legs but that's up to you know coach well for the first time since Saint Nick arrived down there in Tuscaloosa they aren't ranked in the top 10 ah crazy a lot of pressure we wrap up here and continue digitally as Washington will take on Texas in a little league world series Big Ten versus the SEC and coach Saban will be joining us yet again all season long on Friday thank you for that I enjoyed this this is fun for me man you guys are my favorite I'd hire every if I got a coaching job I'd hire every one of you guys to coach something I don't know what I'd hire you to coach something yes okay uh more America's best that's my favorite thing is you are deep down West Virginia football greatest coach of all time obviously whenever it comes to college football nobody disputes that but deep down okay and this owner of the national predators and obviously everything else super genius West Virginia football guy just yeah predators need that they suck I feel like the Mountaineers now they're great come on yeah you need to be a little bit more fucking positive on air okay on game day about the West Virginia Mountaineers okay we need that out of you West Virginia needs that out of you well I look at it this way they need to do something to make me be positive okay okay earning obviously is something uh in this world okay let's continue this conversation about college football we appreciate you joining us coach go ahead Ty Schmidt coach uh I know you mentioned all the things about like expectations and I think that's a that's a good point and I agree with you but when you look at Lane and you know what's going on at LSU like is it kind of national championship or bus this year kind of just with all the whirlwind of the stuff that happened in the offseason the roster how much money they're spending just all the conversation around that like is that is Baton Rouge going to burn down if LSU isn't contending for a national championship this year no I don't think Baton Rouge is going to burn down I think you know they've always had they have great passion there they have high expectations they want to be successful you know and they don't have a lot of patience but I'll tell you what I think Lane has done a the key to the drill for him is going to be in the first year does he have enough depth on this team even though they have 30 53 new players is there enough depth on this team for them to be able to sustain at a high level I think the quarterback's going to be pretty good I think he'll be one of the surprise guys you know in in college football this year I like them when he played at Arizona State two years ago went through some injury things a year ago they got that big old tight end it's a mismatched guy they've got some really good defensive players they've got some really good players that safety they got from Boise State man that guy is a thumper and he's got great size so they have a lot of good things going for them I really do believe that and they got a good defensive coordinator they're Lane hired a really good staff so I mean there's a lot of positives and the one thing I try to do when I was a coach at LSU which is really hard it was really hard is to keep the people positive you know I used to tell the fans you're part of the team and when you all boo the team walk out on the team you're not helping us win you're not helping us do what we all want to do which is win and win big so be positive stay supportive you know help the guy through the transition but I think they're going to have a pretty good team that right there is the tight end he's talking about 14 is not a wide receiver he's tight end defense obviously athletes everywhere everybody in college sports whenever Lane Kiffin could potentially head to LSU was saying to me hey he needs to go down there okay you get there's just five stars everywhere and literally he was greeted by what the best offensive lineman and the best defensive lineman in the country whenever he got down to LSU and then obviously with the transfer portal he's able to really score uh through there because he has a resume of success explosive plays prime time stuff and everything like that and they have money down there they they obviously are a big big part of NIL in the college football space which is why allegedly Lane also picked them over anywhere else so they have a lot of success Sam Leavitt could spin it oh yeah Lane Kiffin's gonna be able to draw it up I love that your messaging is hey can you guys please just like if we don't win by 50 can we can we be a little bit happier about this entire thing because all they want to say is hey oh hey that I used to tell him too let it leave you know the stadium would be half empty before the game was over I said you want the players to play for 60 minutes you all need to keep your ass in the stands for 60 minutes but I will say this and I told Lane this and I think I probably told you this before too you know Belichick used to make us do all kind of crazy projects when I was at the Cleveland Browns and he made us say where are the most players what state do the most players in the NFL come from and it was California Texas you know there was a lot of different Florida but then he said I want to know where they come from per capita what state has the most players per capita and it was Louisiana and that's the reason I took the job and I'm going to tell you what it was right there was 15 to 18 really really good football players that you could get out of Louisiana every year and you got a good enough national reputation to recruit some really good players from other places and um that was about the easiest place I ever had to recruit to got a great uniform yeah Michael Tiger he's back on the sideline I want to hear him roar you know Governor Jeff Landry wants to hear that Tiger roar you know hit the cage you let that thing roar a little bit you know that's what he wanted to hear yeah you are so bad I want to hear that you know that's part of a lot of family memories you know we would poke Tiger you know poke the bell you know and how do you think the other team felt about that Tiger I cannot wait it's gonna be 200 degrees down there oh we cannot wait to get down there coach we can't wait to see you on the road we appreciate the hell out of you man all right I've learned this week man it got real loud there for a bit I learned a lot about a lot of people who've just been kind of waiting to you know you know just kind of waiting hold on hold hold hold now we go yup this guy and I appreciate it and I won't remember every single one of you I'm gonna be around for a while you know so I hope we run into each other hope we get a chance and good luck to all
