Plainfield Native Artist, She Says Yes, discusses his music discography and upcoming projects

The transcription features two main segments. First, the speaker humorously describes an unexpected personal coaching session with New Zealand's cricket coach, Gary Stead, during a media event. He sought help to bowl leg spin instead of a "wrong'un." The coach improvised a drill using a stress ball while both knelt on the floor, creating a memorable and absurd situation witnessed by other media. Second, the conversation shifts to offering travel advice for international flights. Key recommendations include avoiding deceptively cheap early flights due to added logistical costs and stress, wearing comfortable and breathable clothing, prioritizing hydration over plane food, and considering strategic methods to combat jet lag, such as staying awake upon arrival. Additional tips warn about airport location, hand hygiene to prevent illness, and avoiding overly formal attire for comfort. The discussion is interspersed with casual banter and personal anecdotes, maintaining a light-hearted tone throughout.

Daily respo content that you won't find on the radio show the Hodaki breakfast podcast welcome along Thanks great to be here. I just wanted to because earlier on I was watching the masters and Justin Rose, so I believe is some sort of English Hey, so I'm what some sort of English? English what? Person I suppose I like a Person who not teacher? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, I think he's he's some sort of a Is a member of the United Kingdom a member a constituent a peasant a surf he I was watching him walking along the masters and he tossed the golf ball from his right hand to his left and What is quite unmistakably a leg spin delivery? Oh like he's like he's at the top of his run up and he's and he's shain warm Oh really and I wondered back in a hand back in the hands of the stuff Yeah, but the wrist was in an upright position. So that is the stock standard leaky As opposed to the cock wrist which of course is the wrong and that's where my issue is constantly cock wrist stock wrong and Can you just knock your wrist quite as much in their footballer leaky? I've talked to Gary Stead about this I sought help a black cat coach Gary Stead former former New Zealand cricketer former league spinner of note Gary Stead Gary So you're right. Yeah, did he bolt those apart on the legs? Spun a bit of leg and so I talked to him we went to the We went to the press conference for the launch of the news at the black cap summer cricket a couple of years ago And we had time with all of the different people and I was the last interview and his media man was going Hey, Gary. We're just gonna go over here and talk to TV one and then after that we've got this guy here from where you from I was like the alternative commentary collective. He's got a couple of questions for you and Gary goes I just so I just called Gary. He goes Oh, what are your questions? So I can think about it a head of time and I was like I literally can only bowl A wrong and I can't bowl leeksman and I just need some tips on how to bowl leeksman and he goes Yeah, is that it? I was like, yeah, he goes That's what and so he went and he faced the media TV NZ how does feet to the fire? I was grilled he was grilled and on strategy Solutions, etc etc And then he came over to me and I was like, yeah, I'm stuck bowling wrong and I can't and he's like, yeah I've got a drill for you and then he started coaching you. Yeah, the black caps coach actually did some coaching He sent his lackey to check the Meeting rooms in TV NZ to try and find some sort of ball someone came out found a stress ball gave it to him He and he said kneel down on the floor. Yeah, there's always this guy And take those off. Yeah Now kneel down and now before you get down take those off kneel down on the floor. Yeah, and bend over And pick a spot on the wall and go to your happy place She's Any Any Put these earmuffs on And then he kneel down on me He keeps it good good boy. No he um squeeze a bit of this around you Yeah Now look me in the eyes Actually don't look You're there my feet what does on Don't you mind Would you mind putting this off And just keep this for two hours When I kill you just the slip the Well he's the camera turned off. Well he's the camera turned off. Okay, turn that camera pull those goods and um And then he knelt down and No, he did so we're now you're both on your knees video. That's all I'll dig it out on posted Um, but so now we're both on our knees about three four minutes maybe three meters apart from each other Facing opposite like basically if you if we knelt down and faced each other and then he moved like three meters to my left Yeah, and then we just bulged this ball back and forth to each other across ourselves on the floor So the whole why would you be on your knees to do that? So it's stop so the issue with the league spinners is because I'm getting too front on In my delivery so being on your knees means you can't turn okay, and so it forces you to bowl across your yourself a little bit more And that's what he was trying to teach me now. Did I ever do that drill again? No because I haven't played a game of competitive cricket since I asked them So it was a waste of all of our time But it's just this ridiculous situation. We're man Gary Stead and kneeling on the floor of tvnz for here While all of New Zealand sports media's in attendance watching us and that has never happened before like nobody's ever interviewed a National coach and cricket coach and then got some tips from bowling league spin from them No And tried to iron out their wrong and I mean firstly it's amazing you can bowl. I know it's just stop delivery the wrong It's all I can bowl but it is amazing that you still can bowl a wrong and you've got that supple tea in the wrist I can I can rip those things too I will try and dig out the video But it's a it's a doozy of a video. Can Williamson rates it doesn't he? Your own pack day pack that he picked I don't have he right From side on who was surprised by that he picked it from my deck looking down at the at the back yard. Yeah, so like I it's a difficult place to pick a wrong in front. I imagine you Much easier to pick them from either behind or in front like directly behind or in front the but of the bowl Thigs are Jerry but few can um have a look in your have a look in your dock there It's just underneath the in the little segment there on the picture of Winston Peters It's just above the picture of Winston Peters and we'll get to the picture of Winston Peters There's a link there click on that and then that'll take you to the To the video actually rudder can we play that? Yeah, we can okay, but annoyingly it's on instagram So it's just gonna start what am I doing wrong? So at the moment your wrist is pointing down the ground What we want to try and see is if you can get the wrist turned to that position So you're then coming over the ball rather than out the back of the hand. So this is where I'm at now Yeah, and I need to be about via. Yeah, that's right. I think coming over the top of it will rotate like that and hopefully turn that way Let's go now there on the knees Where you trust on a track suit Gary's really working the rest, doesn't he? Wow. Oh my god Oh Did he solve it? He did Oh, okay, so you got a top spin of that one wasn't it? Yeah getting the idea of where your wrist position is Brilliant, I'll go away and work on that and um next year's just consider me. I will. I'll be looking out for you I'm stuck. I didn't work on it and he didn't consider me. He didn't look out for you at all today No, he's pleased to see the back of you. Yeah, well the front of you. Well, I'm gonna be honest though from the back All your all the other way around I'll go to be honest Good place for a snorke. Yeah He um His eyes lit up though like yeah, it was that thing where Finally someone has asked me about the thing that I love to talk about yeah, we love obviously loves coaching Yeah, and then the thing we that's why that's why he got into coaching was to coach. Yeah, not to man manage No, he wasn't interested in the politics. No, who would be no because he could I got into coaching for politics. Yeah For the drama major man. Yeah Um for the glory Tritack work. Should take a quick break come back and have a whips through the conclad this good stuff in the day Shearing me wells and manias to it find them on Instagram ad hodaki breakfast Kajikent Dylan Oh Thanks very much. Appreciate it. Thank you. Just for you very much just before you whip into the conclad Yeah, I've got a little effect away to bow Justin Rose mid or name Peter He's one of these people Yes, he's English English but when he was age five uh, he moved from a city for just gonna say so there for you with his family and he looks the spitting image of Steve Kerr Doing about Justin Rose here the golfor because he's he's two shots back But of course when you the listen to this podcast this might be relevant at all because he would have lost by that stage Yep, but at least you know as minornomers pader Greg message into the conclad Jeremy Greg hey team not Greg Prieble Greg surest surest Greg Schumacher Greg Schumacher Greg Schumacher has said hey team my olds are about to fly internationally for the first time ever and I vaguely remember Jerry giving a great lecture on dozen don'ts for international flights can't seem to find any help route Greg surest is alter about to fly internationally for the first time ever. Yeah, so I think we talked about this last year before we went to America. Oh, yeah, I my sister-in-law recently flew to Australia with her two kids her is seven and five my nieces Man, this is my nephews nephews And they were on a 630 flight to get to brissey am am one of my first pieces of advice is never ever book those early flights now Because they might seem cheap. They might be like a hundred bucks cheaper or something, but it will It's better night. But once you've paid the extra hundred bucks to get a normal flight like at 930 you won't remember later on down the track that you haven't paid the money. Anyway. - No, but also if it's 6.30, so you're gonna be at the airport at 4.30, you probably live an hour away from the airport, so you're leaving home at 3.30, that's last night. - That's the track. - There's another problem here, and that is that when you arrive at the place that you're arriving at, you can't check into your accommodation. So that's the reason why it's cheap, and so you have to flap around all day and generally you just end up spending 100 bucks. - Yes. - Flaffing around at a restaurant, down in Holisoth. So that's a trick for young players there. The cheapest flight is often the worst flight, there's a reason why it's cheaper. - And it will cost you money later on. - So crunch the numbers on that, 'cause sometimes you will go, "Oh, if I fly a day earlier, it's actually half the price, but now you get paid for somebody to stay." Or like what's it worth to you to not have to walk around town with your luggage? You know what I mean? 'Cause that's the-- - People just see the price and they just go with the cheapest. I mean, I get why you do, 'cause it's like, why would you pay more for something else that's exactly the same thing I'm traveling from here to here? You know, this one's, let's just say $1,000. This one here's $1,300. I'm gonna go with $1,000. - That's a trick for it. - So I still get there, but it's like you actually will end up paying more and others. The other one is sometimes flying into airports, you gotta look at where the airport is. In relation to the place that you're going to, because-- - Yeah, go to the closest one. - Yeah, sometimes you'll get in the airport and it might be a super cheap flight, anything else is good. And then you realize that you've flown into Stanstead, for example, and it's one in the morning, and there are no trains. So you now have to catch taxi, and that's gonna cost you 400 pounds or something. You know, there's always a catch. - If you think that you're saving money, just take a step back and just have a, have a guess. The fact that Greg said my odds are about to fly internationally. Here's a tip for your parents. It's not the 1950s, don't get dressed up in your number ones to get on a plane. I sat next to two guys in full suits. Full two, that's not three, but-- - Yeah. - On the 17-hour sucker from Dubai to New Zealand. - Oh, no. - And now-- - That's a crotch rod. - Now when I tell you that this guy spilled every single piece of food that was given to him on me, every single piece on me, 'cause I was sitting on the aisle Satan, and then these two, I think they were dutch for sitting next to me. Every single, to the point where, at one point, you have a nap under the blanket or whatever, and I stood up to go to the bathroom and I just saw this giant red sauce dollop that had somehow got between me and the blanket. They had dropped on me from his dinner. Oh, God. It sounds like tension on me off. - It was a hate crime. - There's another piece of advice there. Don't wear white t-shirts on long haul flights because you will spill crap on it. And so by the time you arrive, it looks grubby. A couple of super basic things that seem silly, but yeah, as you said, comfortable, comfortable pants, generally track suit the Germans, or something that's a breathable fabric you've got your linen's. Linen's a fevery, you've got some kind of marina, like marino, that can keep you warm, but also breathed. But you gotta think about the place that you're going to. So when you get off the plane, you're gonna walk out of, like we did in Austin. You're gonna walk out of the terminal. - Houston, we actually walked out of them. - Oh yeah. - So it was even more humid. - Yes, Houston, sorry. And you gotta think about the temperature of the places at night time, is at daytime, because you don't wanna be sweating after you've been on a say, 15 hour flight and you're tired, and you feel like crap. And you're hungry and that's weird, and you just feel odd. And yeah, you gotta get that, you've gotta get that right. And when you get off the plane, just before you land, you can chuck on some shorts if you know that you're getting them 30s or something, 'cause otherwise you're gonna start sweating. - I would also recommend no closed-toed shows, particularly for the oldies, because your feet are gonna swell. - Yes. - So don't have shoes on, like swollen feet. - Yeah, go crocs or slippers with some sort of open-toed situation. - Bring your own toothbrush and a small amount of toothpaste 'cause you can travel on because it's really nice after a long, long, long flight to clean your teeth before you're gonna arrive, otherwise you feel gross. Just basically trying to eliminate the grossness. - Yeah, keep grossness to a limit. - I would recommend if you have the constitution forward, I don't know how old this guy's parents are. - The person's heart is humanly possible for the first part of their flight. - Wow. - As hard as your constitution will allow. - This is controversial. - If you built for it, go for it. And I've always said that, if you built for it, go for it. And drink yourself into a blivian, black out, wake up, you'll be about Lord of the Rings away from your destination. - Well, 'cause Giro, you just described getting off the plane and you're disoriented and you feel disgusting. It sounded like it was a big night out. So I'm a nice combining the two. - Yes, quite clever. Yes, like combining the two, a hybrid version of international travel and drinking. - And there's also my jet lag solution as well. So land wherever you are, immediately stay up as late as you possibly can that night. And again, if your constitutional allows it, hit the person's heart as you possibly can, then you will, you will sleep through the night and then you wake up the next day and it's like am I jet lagged? Am I hungover? Who knows? Who cares? - Okay. - Interesting strategy. Yeah, and that's definitely a strategy. The other strategy is don't eat food on the plane. There is no, you think, you know, I've paid all this money, I've got a board. There's nothing to do. I need as much as I can. Weirdly enough, the more you eat, the worse you feel at the other end. - Oh my God, it's so much. - And the more water you drink, the better you feel. So if you can drink lots of water and not eat any of the plane food, eat your meal before you get on the plane. Like what people generally do is, but say they've got a night flight, at 8.30, maybe they're going to the States. They'll have dinner at 6 in the airport terminal and then they'll get on board the flight and then you'll be delivered another meal when you get on that flight. - And you feel like I have to eat it. - Yeah, they'll hump that disgusting airline meal. - No matter where you're flying at the front of the plane with a black, back of the plane, it's disgusting, the water, the black of the plane. It's disgusting, even the best, (laughing) - The black of the plane. - The black of the plane. - Rosa Parks. - What's happening in the master? She thought, what's happening in the master? She thought for that. - What else? - I don't eat the beef, that's what did me and Lainon on that flight, the beef. - Also far to away, like you're allowed to far as much as you like, most of the time you can't smell it. - Yep, robust. - It just disappears. And at least you've got some horrific boudresies going on. In which case you probably can, but. - Yeah. - Now rip wholesale ass. - Wash your hands, plenty when you're on the plane because you collect up heaps of crap. - I'll be right, heaps of germs. - Now how many times you come off a plane and get a cold three days later? - Well, but that's something else that you were doing, Jerry, that's causing that. - 'Cause you get heaps of sinus infections after international flights. - No, I know where you talking about. - Didn't you have to get off a plane 'cause you know as well, - I know, I know. - Stop bleeding at one time. - I know, you're talking about. - The altitude, I think. - Yeah, just the cabin pressure is very difficult. - All right, sure, we'll take a pin. - Sure, we'll take a pin. - Oh yeah, for the departure. - It's a good batch of carrots. - It was taken pin. - The batch cut. - All right, I'll sing on the hit. Oh, just quickly, happy birthday to Winston Peters. - Oh, 81 today. - 81. - Yeah, if he gets any older, the US might like them. - Doesn't look a day over. - 90. - 80. ♪ Jerry and Manaya catch the radio show ♪ ♪ From six til 10 week days ♪ ♪ The Hodaki breakfast ♪

FAQs

A common mistake is having a 'cock wrist' position, where the wrist points down, instead of the correct upright 'stock standard' wrist position for leg spin.

He suggested kneeling on the floor and bowling a ball back and forth across yourself to prevent being too front-on in the delivery, forcing a better across-the-body action.

Early flights often require very early departures, leading to exhaustion, and you may arrive before you can check into accommodation, costing extra time and money.

Wear breathable, comfortable clothing like tracksuits or linen, avoid white to prevent stains, and choose open-toed shoes or crocs to accommodate foot swelling.

Stay up as late as possible upon arrival, consider moderate alcohol if your constitution allows, and try to sleep through the night to reset your body clock.

Eating less plane food and drinking more water can help you feel better upon arrival, as heavy meals may worsen discomfort and jet lag.
