Speaker 2Hey, rock stars. Reggie Dawson, host of the show. Welcome back again to the Being On Stage podcast. We are day two in July 2019, and also day two podcasting in a row. Still sick. Still got the sniffles and the coughs, and I just can't seem to shake it, man. You ever have that happen where you just, you get sick and you just can't seem to shake it? I'll tell you. It sucks, because my wife is sick, I'm sick. Our daughter is away at camp, so it's like, freedom, but we don't even get to enjoy it, you know? So, she's suffering just the same way as I'm suffering, plus we're waiting on maintenance for the house. Things keep happening, but you know what? Commitments are commitments, and we still gotta follow through with them. I made a commitment to do a podcast every day, at least for a week, and push for the whole month of July. We're gonna see how that goes. I'm a little nervous about it, because, you know, when you make a commitment like that to do something every single day, the pressure's on, you know? The pressure is 100% on, and just like getting on stage, you know? Once you get out there, the pressure is on, you know? You're out there. You gotta stay out there. And yesterday I mentioned that I got to talking to somebody, probably last week or so, about. You know, once you're on stage, maintaining that confidence level and maintaining that appearance of a performer, you know? Not looking like you're on stage for the first time. I mean, even if you are on stage for the first time, you know, once you're out there, and it's kind of like you've made that commitment. Once you step on stage, the commitment's there. Like, it's on, and I've been that person that has made that commitment and signed up to go on stage. And it was a karaoke contest at the mall when I was eight, and I got out on stage and absolutely froze. I mean, mouth hanging open, you know, little stutters, and just nothing. They even started the song over, and still nothing, man, nothing would come out of my mouth at all. It was so cute, though. At the end, when they were bringing everyone back, I'm like, oh, do I get to go up? And they're like, oh, no, sweetie. You didn't actually sing, so you don't get to go up and get cheered for. Although, you know, because of how people treat kids on these type of things, you know, I probably would have still gotten some applause just for, you know, going up there. Because a lot of people, a lot of people won't even take that step to get on stage. That's another thing. If the people that are the ones that are like the naysayers and picking on you and quote-unquote hating on your game, that's what we used to call it. If they're, you know, the haters, I guess. You could say. Most of the time, the people that are hating on what you're doing on stage are the people that aren't even on stage. It's even worse when it's another performer. I've had that happen, too, and maybe I'll talk about that tomorrow. But it really, really, really just annoys the crap out of me that, you know, the people that are going to talk the most crap, the people that are going to make fun of you, the people that are going to point and laugh are the people that 10 years from now, they're still going to be sitting there. They're still going to be sitting in the audience because they don't have the courage, the kahunas, the balls to get on stage and showcase what they have in front of people, you know? So you've got to kind of take those comments with that mentality of, okay, they're not even up here. Like, I'm already 10 steps above them because they're not even up here. So once you get on stage, maintaining that mentality while these people are looking at you and maybe even laughing at you. Is difficult. And what I mentioned yesterday was you have to get into your show. So I heard this analogy, and I've been waiting for the right podcast to use it. And I'm going to go with this one. Why not? It's the title of the show. Performing is like toothpaste. Okay? Now, I know it's kind of like you probably saw the title of this podcast, and you're like, oh, I've got to hear this. So here it is. I know I'm like four minutes in and everything. Oh, four minutes in and I haven't mentioned it. Listen. If you want to hop on a call and run some things and need a sounding board, need to work through some things about your shows, maybe you're looking to get on stage for the first time, anything at all that you need help with, tips on, just need a third party to kind of set your mind right, I'm here for you. You can jump on my calendar. We can chat for about 20, 30 minutes. You can go to beingonstage.com slash calendar and let's get to it. You know, let's make something happen for you. I'm here for you. 100%. So once you're on stage. And you're really getting into your show. That's the key is really getting into your show. The thing I like to think about is toothpaste. Now, I don't know about you, but I've been using the same tube of toothpaste for what feels like six months. And I know that sounds gross. Okay. But hear me out. I brush my teeth twice a day. Sometimes I miss a dose. You know, sometimes I miss one here or there. I think everyone does. I mean, unless you're like that religiously hygienic person, which kudos to you. I was never really that guy. I was the. You know, avoid being clean kid. Hygiene's a whole nother episode as well. Man, I'm like racking up these things to talk about this month. This is great. I know halfway through I'm going to run out. So bear with me. There may be episodes where I'm just like, hey, what's up? Hit me up. Thanks for tuning in. Anyways, performing's like toothpaste. So you notice when you're, you know, getting down to the end of the toothpaste, you're like, oh, I need to buy some more. I need to buy some more. I always forget. And it's not because I don't think about toothpaste. It's just that you go so long without needing toothpaste that you don't think about it. So how is performing like toothpaste? Because I'm not just going to sit here and talk about toothpaste. Oh, my God. I've said toothpaste like 20 times. You notice when you get to the end of the toothpaste and you haven't gotten a new one yet and you're like, I can go again. I can go again. The reason I've been using the same tube of toothpaste for six months is because it doesn't seem to run out. And no matter how many times I go back to this tube of toothpaste, there always seems to be enough. Toothpaste in there to brush my teeth. And as you're squeezing, you're squeezing. Even if you get down to like the tubes completely flat and you're like, oh, I don't know. I may have to. I don't know. I may have to use this plain peroxide today. God, please don't. Oh, my God. That's so gross. If you ever have to do that. Oh, pure peroxide brushing your teeth. It'll work. Don't swallow it. It's freaking nasty. Did it one time. All it will take. I won't even use the toothpaste or the mouthwash with peroxide in it. I digress. As you're squeezing. That tube of toothpaste more and more and more and more keeps coming out. Even though in your mind a month ago, you were at a toothpaste and you needed a new one. That's what happened to me. I was at a toothpaste a month ago and I told my wife, hey, I need a new tube of toothpaste. Well, my toothpaste like seven bucks. It's that Sensodyne repair and protect. Like I have sensitive teeth and I'm special. So I got to use this expensive toothpaste. But it's like seven bucks, you know, so it's not exactly easy to go out and buy a two dollar tube of toothpaste. I have to justify spending. Seven dollars. So I just keep squeezing that tube and I'll tell you, no matter what, there seems to be toothpaste still in the tube. And that's where I'm getting back into performing. So as you're on stage and you start to feel this is where it's kind of difficult to get this analogy, but I'm going to pull this off. I'm going to pull it together and I'll make it happen as you're on stage and you start to feel that that setting in of, OK, I made it through the first 20 seconds. I'm out here. I have a bunch of blank stare. It's coming my way. Oh, my God. Just keep squeezing that tube because even even as you get forward towards the end of this end of your set, your show, your performance, whatever it is, even as you get towards the end, your energy level starts to drop. You know, you're you're starting to get tired. You're starting to get worn out. And my shows were high energy when I used to perform. So it's like I'd go on stage for 10 minutes and like seven minutes and I'm dying like I'm a big dude. You know, I'm not. I'm not exactly the fit, the fittest guy. And I never was. I was never really that like buff fit. I mean, I went like a year where I did CrossFit where I was, you know, I look pretty good, but I've never been that guy. But so I always used to get winded about like six, seven minutes in, sometimes three or four minutes in, depending on what I did. But you just keep squeezing that tube of toothpaste. And no matter what, more keeps coming out. And same thing with your show. You can always tap in to more energy. You can always tap into more emotion. You can. You can always tap in to more while you're on stage. Let that adrenaline come out, like really, truly get 100 percent into your show, like throw yourself, immerse yourself in it and squeeze that tube until the last bit of toothpaste comes out. There'll probably still be more left, but just keep going. Once you're out there, the best thing you can do to shut all the people up, to make the audience cheer and to make yourself feel accomplished. is to keep going, squeeze that tooth. keep squeezing that energy out of it keep squeezing that emotion out of it and by the end of the show the audience is going to come around they're going to love you why not necessarily because you were the most amazing thing they saw but because you were real and you put something into the show that they didn't see before yourself and you just kept squeezing it out squeezing out that toothpaste that's my big analogy for the day is how performing is like toothpaste so i hope that made a connection i hope that made sense i'm really tired i literally woke up like a half an hour ago i've been on this weird work schedule where i was closing yesterday and got home at like midnight and so today i have to go in at noon so that 12-hour turnaround's a little weird it's not normal for me so i really hope this made sense and made the connection um if not feel free to call me out on my crap you know shoot me an email reggie at beingonstage.com try to i try not to get called out on facebook too much but you can you can do it you know you can call me out there too um so i ask you again you know what it whatever it is that i can help you with whatever it is you're struggling with when it comes to performing even whatever made you click on this podcast even if it's just to find out what toothpaste has to do with performing i'm i'm here for you and i want to help you i want to i want to jump on board of your dream and your career and help you push yourself forward so again you can hop on the calendar we can chat um reggie or i'm sorry that's the email reggie at beingonstage.com the calendar is it beingonstage.com slash calendar oh and i can't believe i didn't say this last episode i have a brand new uh method program i haven't really named it yet but uh packet giveaway whatever it's information for you uh i've put together 10 ways that you can get paid for performing and none of them have anything to do with actual well some of them do but most of them don't have to do with your standard performing like some of it's out of the box thinking of how you can get paid for what you do i know that's one thing that's important to us is getting paid and i'll probably go a little deeper into this tomorrow but you can check that out also if you go to beingonstage.com and scroll down a little bit you put in your name and email and i'll send that to you it's 100 free but it has 10 ways resources websites you can check out and everything how you can get paid for performing so check that out hit me up all that good stuff i look forward to hearing from you and as always keep on shining
