Speaker 2Hey, hey, rock stars. Being On Stage podcast, your humble host, I am Reggie Dawson. Thanks so much for tuning in. Now, you guys know I love my analogies. Well, I got another one for you today, obviously. Performing is like an airplane. Listen, we got performings like toothpaste, performing is like a postage stamp. You can go back and listen to those podcasts if you want to find out how. Well, today, performing is like an airplane. And I love my analogies because I hear them someplace and it's usually having to do with, you know, self-growth or personal development or business or entrepreneurship or anything like that. And this happened to do with confidence. And so I figured, you know, I can flip this around into a message about performing because we have to be confident, right? So how in the world is performing like an aeroplane? Can you? Do you know? Of course I know. I mean, I'm the one that came up with the title of the podcast. So listen, think about an airplane, you know, people get in, they travel from one destination to another. And what I really want to get into is the weight of the plane. OK, so there's all these regulations of, you know, how many people can be on the plane and how much, you know, how much luggage can be on the plane. You know, a lot of times you got to pay a little extra if your luggage is heavy. Well, I got news for you. There are aerospace engineers. There are engineers that have figured all this out in order for that plane to fly. It can't exceed a certain weight, which means at some point. And I've never I've never reached this point. I've never seen them like remove people's bags. But at some point it stands to reason that there's going to be there would be too much weight. There's a cutoff point basically to make sure that it can still, you know, make it down the runway up to that 200 and some odd miles an hour that it needs to take off. And I'm sure it's faster than that. But that, you know, in order to get it in the air, it has to, you know, has to be under a certain weight. Think about like a paper airplane, you know, if you were to tape a whole bunch of pennies onto a paper airplane, at some point, you know, it may glide a little bit. It may help it be a little more aerodynamic at first, but as you start adding more and more pennies and taping more and more pennies to that paper airplane, eventually you're going to throw it and it's just going to fall straight down to the ground. And the same thing happens. You know, I mean, imagine this. The same thing would happen to a real life airplane if it got too much weight. So they have a cutoff point. So what does this have to do with performing, Reggie? Right? That's your question. What in the hell does an airplane's weight and the baggage of the people and the every, what, why are you talking about an airplane? Well, baggage, my friend, baggage. So imagine yourself as an airplane. You're a performer. You're taking off. You're going to your next destination. But if there's too much weight holding you down, you're not going to be able to get off the ground. You're not going to be able to take off into the air. You're not going to be able to move forward to your next destination, which your next destination, my friend, your next destination is success. So how do you eliminate some of this baggage? Well, first, let's talk about what it is that could be weighing you down, what it is that could be keeping you from taking off, blasting off, if you will. So number one, and I may go number one. I may not talk numbers. I don't have a certain number of things here. As you know, I've been podcasting every day for the month of July, and I have a topic and a few notes, and I just, as my mentor says, grip it and rip it, and I just go for it. I just start talking. It's what I'm good at. It's my passion. But yeah, so all right. Airplane. You are an airplane. You are an airplane. You are an airplane. You are an airplane, my friend. So how do you make sure that you can take off? You can call yourself a rocket, too, if you want to lift off or take off. It doesn't really matter. The point is the baggage that you keep, the baggage that's going to weigh you down, number one, is going to be your negative attitude. Okay? You may not think you have a negative attitude, but all that self-doubt and self-deprecation and that fear that holds you back, that's baggage. Just pile it on, my friend. Just keep on piling on that fear. Pile on on that fear. Pile on that negativity. Pile on that self-doubt. Bring it over here. Oh, you got some self-deprecation. Come right this way. Right this way. We got a place for that bag right back here. Just keep piling on that baggage, you know? The answer there is to not live in fear. I think I talked about this yesterday. You guys probably notice a trend with these podcasts. Like, they kind of tend to lead into one another, right? Well, the ideas just start to flow. When you're doing something every day, you're going to have bleed over. So, go with me here. Work with me. Vibe with me. My daughter would be so embarrassed right now. She hates it when I get all like, I don't know, start using slang. I'm supposed to speak proper English at all times. I guess. I don't know. Teenagers, what can I say? My daughter's 14. She's 14. She'll be 15 in January. And she's already talking about getting her driver's permit. And she's like, I'm not going to drive with you. I said, well, if you're going to drive my car, you're going to drive with me. Anyways, that's neither here nor there. So, you got all that self-doubt, all that you baggage, okay? What about other people's baggage? Are you letting other people's baggage join your flight? What does that look like? Now, I'm not talking, listen, if you're in a band, you're in a group, you're in a duet, you know, maybe you're networking with other performers, going on tour with other performers. That's not what I'm talking about. That's not baggage. That's other people. That's like the wind beneath your wings. That's going to lift you up. The other people's baggage that I'm talking about is that. Their doubt and their negativity about what you're doing. Are you allowing their thoughts and their comments to load up your airplane? Your airplane to success. Your airplane to stardom. Your airplane to rock star status. You're the airplane, so you know, whatever. But are you letting their negativity and their negative comments, and sometimes they're just pure hatred and just ugliness. Are you letting that baggage on board your plane? Because if you are, you got to stop. You don't have time for that. I believe it was, I believe it's credited to Eleanor Roosevelt. And I know there's always controversy about who said what and who first said it first. And I don't care. I learned that it was Eleanor Roosevelt that said, what was it? You could only feel inferior. People can only make you feel inferior if you let them something along those lines. So you're allowed. You're allowing that to happen. You're allowing those negative thoughts and those negative comments and those negative feelings and those BS, whatever the hell they're thinking. You're letting their, if nothing else, jealousy creep into your mind. And when it creeps into your mind, it starts to multiply because then their negative comments are hanging out with your negative comments. And they're just having a party in your mind saying, huh, we're never going to leave the airport. We're just sitting here. They're just over there drinking at the bar. They're never going to get up in the air. All the negativity and the, and the doubt that they're there at the bar, at the airport, sipping on their cocktails, they're missing their gate check-in. They're, they're missing their flight. Okay. That can't be you. You've got to get on this flight, my friend, because I got news for you. You cannot fly with other people's opinions, weighing you down. You will not be able to take off if you doubt yourself. Could you imagine, could you imagine the pilot? Okay. Now let's, let's stop being an airplane for a minute and let's start being a pilot. You know, could you imagine the pilot sitting there and he's at the gate and they're flipping on the controls and him and the co-pilot. Oh, let's check this, check that. They're doing their pre-flight, pre-flight checklist and all that good stuff that comes before the airport. And they start taxiing, backing up at the gate. They're turning and they're, they're navigating through the, through the airport. You know, they're getting to the, to the runway and he gets to the edge of the runway. And he gets the clear from the tower and he goes, you know what? Uh, I don't know if I can do this. Co-cap, uh, what do you think? Well, well, captain, uh, you know, it's, it's a little windy and you don't really fly well when it's windy. And, uh, there's a lot of turbulence today. There's a storm coming and where we're going, it's a little rough. So, uh, I don't know if you can do this either. I think you might want to sit this one out. Um, I don't think you're, I don't. I don't think you're up for this. And the captain's going to say, oh, I think you're right. What are we going to do with all these people on this plane? You know, they, they paid for tickets and everything. Well, um, you know, just they'll be okay. Uh, we'll just, um, they can catch another, they can hang out, hang out at the bar with negativity and self-doubt. That's what those people can do. Could you imagine, honestly, could you imagine the captain and the co-captain having that conversation right before takeoff? Could you imagine if that pilot? is about to punch it, he goes, "Um, I hope, I think this is going to be an okay flight. I think I'm going to be able to get this thing off the ground. Do you want a captain that thinks he can take off and get the plane off the ground? Or do you want a captain that is so full of passion and confidence that he could basically lift that plane off the ground with just his, you know, positive thoughts and charm? You want a captain that's confident. You want an airplane that's able to come off the ground because it's not weighed down by all that negative crap. It's not weighed down by the doubt of other people, the hatred of other people, the ugliness of other people, the comments. Just people can be rude, okay? People can be downright nasty. When you got something that they don't got, they can be nasty. 100%. You know it's true. It's happened. If it hasn't happened to you, I really hope you're not the person that's done it. If it hasn't happened to you, you probably witnessed it happen to someone else. People can be downright ugly creatures when they get jealous. They say jealousy is a green monster, but I got news for you. It ain't green. It's a black monster. Am I black? I mean, just dirty, ugly, not nice, mucky, muddy monster inside of people. You can't let that creep into you. You can't let their jealousy and their, honestly, you know when your parents used to tell you that people that pick on you are really just not satisfied with themselves? You can't let themselves or they're, you know, they're really insecure themselves. Tell me as an adult, tell me as an adult, can you just raise your hand? I'm raising my hand. Have you found that to be true? I'm raising my hand like you guys are standing in front of me. Have you found that to be true though as an adult? That the people that are so nasty, so shady, so ugly and jealous and just mean are the most miserable freaking people on the planet and they can't get their airplanes off the ground. So they don't want to be on the ground. They don't want to be on the ground. So they don't want your airplane taken off either. They're calling up to air control saying, oh no, listen, um, Johnny, he, uh, he can't do this. You're gonna, you're gonna need to ground him. Air traffic control saying, no baby, Johnny's ready to go. He's ready to take off. We're gonna let this bad boy fly. That's you. You're the one flying. You're the one taking off. You're the one blasting off. You're the one reaching new heights and traveling on to new destinations to where you are going to be successful. Keep your head up. I know it sounds really cliche. Keep your chin up. Keep your nose clean. You're going to be all right, Johnny. Yeah, but seriously, you, you got to be positive for you. You got to be confident in what it is you're sharing with your audience. You got to be confident in the fact that you're sharing the truest part of yourself on stage with people that may or may not know you. You got to be confident. You have to know that what you're putting out there is full of passion. You got to know that what you're putting out there is full of passion. It's full of emotion. It's full of energy. And most importantly, it's full of you. Okay. I got like veins popping out of my forehead and my neck and everything. Listen, let me wrap this up because I could, I could honestly, I could go on about confidence all day. You can only take, you can't take off. I'm sorry.
