brings the word of God to us this morning. Oh, thank you back. Well, you go away on holidays for a few weeks and you come back and then just turn the place upside down, haven't they, Jeff? You know, all this standing around in a circle. You know, when you grew up being a bit of a troublemaker with a big mouth, you get punched in the head often. And that was me as a kid. So I have some remaining anxiety, big gray you, and know about this. When people are behind you, it makes me feel uncomfortable, you know what I mean? So this is probably the most uncomfortable setting that I reckon I could ever be in. But anyway, our trust is, that's why we ask the nice people to stand behind me today. They won't come up and whack me in the bed. But there's a few over there that look a bit rough, I'm just saying that. Does anyone check he's criminal record that fellow? I'm like, "Watch my wallet there, please." I'm glad to come to church. Thank you church for allowing us the time to get some rest as a family. And we've been local, been around, but had some time off. So that's been pretty awesome. We got to go down to the youth camp, summer camps. And that was absolutely amazing seeing our children just in the presence of God for an intense few days. Some of the young ones are here today. They would attest to that. And then just this past week we had all of our young adults in here, over 400 young adults. It was like a washing machine in here. They were running around in circles. I was like, "You guys aren't going to pay for these carpets when you get them all torn up and worn out." And there was water flying around everywhere. I don't know who did that. But there's electric, there's electrical stuff here, you know? And Jordan Meade, the safety guy, he's pulling his hair out. And it was a good time. We had a powerful time with our young adults. And I'm glad that you got to experience a little bit of what it feels like to be at Summer Fest this morning. So we're in the round and it's going to be a good time this morning. If you get your Bibles ready, we are going to read from Psalm 124. You can say standing for the reading of the Word. Psalm 124 verse 1 reads like this, "If the Lord had not been on our side, let Israel say, let the church say, if the Lord had not been on our side, when people attacked us, they would have swallowed us alive. When their anger flared against us, the flood would have engulfed us. The tarant would have swept over us. The raging waters would have swept us away. But praise be to the Lord, who has not let us be torn by their teeth. We have escaped the bird. We've escaped like a bird from the fowler's snare. The snare that has been broken and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord. Anybody know the name of the Lord here this morning? Come on, will we call on that name as we pray in Jesus' name? Father, we pray for everyone that's here today. They didn't come to hear us. They didn't come to hear just great worship. Our worship is our gift to you. But the Father, we thank you for everything that we have. We thank you that you've been on our side. We thank you that you've been fighting our battles. We thank you that you have given us a great hope and a great future in Jesus' name. Amen. Once you high five the person next year should take a seat this morning and do apologize for those people sitting behind speakers. And what not. But, and thank you worship team. They've had a bit of fun up here doing all of this. Oh my goodness, that's a scary. It's a bit shinier there than the other spots, isn't it? See, there's nowhere to hide in this place. David, he opens up Psalm 124 and he's taking a moment to reflect. He's taking a moment to reflect and his conclusion is this, if the Lord had not been on our side. If the Lord had not been on our side, that's not nostalgia. That's a testimony. He's testifying the psalmist. He's encouraging Israel and he's encouraging us today. Before we face what's next, then how many know there will be some more challenges ahead? I know we're all happy to go from 25 into 26, but in 26 there will be some more challenges. There will be some more trouble. There will be some more things to overcome, but you have something in your favor. You have God on your side. The next challenge, the next obstacle, that's real good. The next stop position, the next trouble, we have the pause. That's what he's encouraging us to do. Just pause for a second. Don't stop. Just pause for a second and have a look about every mountain that he's brought you over, every valley that he's brought you through. You know, church, sometimes that's the most faithful thing that we can do. Is to pause and see what God has done in our lives. To look back and see what God has brought you through. Not to relive the pain, not to not to rehearse the traumas, not to romanticize a somewood, the struggles, but remember who showed up in your dark times. Remember who brought you through those valley experiences. Remember who brought you over those obstacles that seemed impossible to get over. Remember who did that. Because if God did it, God will do it again. If God did it for them, God will do it for you. If God did it, God will do it. Just keep moving forward. You know, we didn't survive out of our own great ability to survive. We didn't make it because we are special. We didn't survive because we are particularly strong. We didn't survive the storms of life because just pure grit and determination. It wasn't that that got us through. The Samas said, "We would have been overcome. We should have been crushed. We should have been swallowed up. We would have been taken out, but you weren't because the Lord was on your side." That's something to put your hands together and thank God and praise God for. And if God did it, God will do it. I remember, I will. Thank you very much, Tony. And it's, I remember, I always want to say that. You know, we're like, I feel real inspired. I feel like a proper preacher today. I might even do, "Hm, ah, it's your might. In my just come out, does Jeffden know how to play that, like the Hammond, Church organ things?" Because that may be required at the end of the service. I may even chicken dance all around here. Always wanted to do it. But I wanted to when someone says, "Preach preacher, I wanted to say, I'm doing the best I can." And keep moving. Anyway, anyway. When I was a young fella, I had just got my car license and, this was back in 1997. I had a car license. I got my car. It was a VC Commodore. I don't know if anyone remembers a VC Commodore. Petrol guzzlers, those things. Real expensive to keep filling up. I'm not as expensive today because petrol prices are crazy today. But it was, it was, it was an expensive car to run. I was a second year baker pastry cook. Yes, I'm still cooking up bread today. It's bread of life these days. But I was, I was a baker pastry cook and on a hefty pay packet of $220 a week. And my parents, just, my daughter's here. I'm just going to say this so she can hear. My parents used to make me still pay board on $220 a week. And I had to pay for the petrol of my car for in that $220 a week. And I had a girlfriend. Yeah, shouldn't be a surprise to you. Had a girlfriend, had a girlfriend that lived like an hour away. And for those wondering if that was Alicia, no, it wasn't. I had options. Yeah. One option. That was it. Just one other option. That was it. She lived like an hour away. And I thought I was doing good. So I had to do a lot of drive. And those were in the ancient times, speaking to you right now, Jonah. The ancient times of shivalry. Shivalry was a thing that you had to pay for stuff. So you get a girlfriend. You don't have a right to have a girlfriend unless you're willing to pay for her dinner. Boys, I'm helping you. Is out here. Yeah, those were the, so that $220. Yes, things were cheaper, but that $220 didn't go real far. I couldn't afford to be reckless with my $220. I had to be careful. And I thought I was doing real good. Driving my VC Commodore around the place. I thought I had seen the flash of some cameras a few times, but you know, the favor of the Lord was upon me. And no fines came. So I was like, this is good. I was doing good for a long period of time there. Then one day, I walked into the house and my mum, she said, Paul, there's something waiting for you on your bed. I went into my bedroom and there were seven letters from the West Australian Transportation Department. What had happened was my mum had told me to change the address on my license. And I've forgotten to do that. And they finally tracked me down. Yes, they found out where I was and they sent me all of my fines all in one go. I lost my license. for two years, two years. They ended up being gracious towards me and just taking my license for one year. But at 18 years of age, man, that was like, my life was over. My life was over because I had a debt I couldn't pay. It was huge. Like, I had a thousand something dollars worth of fines to have to pay. I didn't have a license. They would take my license off me for a year. How was I going to pay the debt back if I couldn't drive my car to work? I had, I was in a dilemma. I was in a hole so deep I didn't think I could get out of it. How was I going to keep a girlfriend that lived an hour away? As if life wasn't hard enough being a redhead. Everyone was against me. The government was against me. The Pope was against me. Everyone's against me. It was a tough time. I remember feeling like this was tough going. I don't know how I'm going to survive. How am I going to get through this season? It seemed impossible. It seemed like something that I was just never going to be able to overcome. But my dad said something to me. He said, Paul, just keep moving forward. It's all right for you, dad. But just keep moving forward. Just keep getting up. Just keep showing up at work. Just keep paying down the debt. And you know what? Now I'm 45 years old. I know. I'm moisturised. I look 35. But 45 years of age. And I look back at moments like that sometimes that seemed impossible to overcome. They seemed so great. And now I look back at it and have a little giggle because I'm like that. That mountain then is just an ant hill. That wasn't something that was impossible to overcome. But God brought me through. I look now at 45 years of age. At 45 years of age, I look back sometimes. I pause and I look back at moments because now at my age I have actually been through some real tragedies. I've overcome some real challenges. I've had to face some real devastating moments. And I look back and I say, man, if God kept us through that, if God kept me through that, I'm looking at Lani. If God kept you through that, God can do it. And God will do it again. Anybody else got that testimony today? You've been through some moments that you thought was too great, too hard to overcome, too impossible to overcome, too broken, too dysfunctional. But God kept you. God stepped into your circumstance. God stepped into that situation and he did a miracle in your life. It should have crushed you. But God gave you the strength to make it through. God did that. It's that financial challenge. It should have, it should have ended you, but it didn't. God did that. He stepped into your circumstances. That relationship, break it, break down. You thought that that was going to be the end of your story, but it wasn't because God stepped in. God did that. You're addicted to some things that you should never have got free from. But God stepped in. God did that. It should have taken your life. It should have ended your story. It should have told you a part that God stepped in and God did that and God will do it again. And if God did it for them, it'll do it for you. Come on, we just got to keep moving forward. Keep moving forward. Keep getting up. Keep serving Jesus. Keep getting on your knees and praying. Keep getting into the Word of God. Come on, keep worshipping God. Keep showing up at church. The first section of this message are called chaos. Psalm 24 verse 3 to 5, it says, "They would have swallowed us alive. The waters would have engulfed us. The tarant would have overwhelmed us. But God was on our side." In biblical antiquity, water wasn't just a poetic thing to write about. It was symbolic of something. It said something much more than just water. It meant in Bible times. It meant that the deep in Genesis was chaos all around. The flood was chaos. The Red Sea was chaos that they had to overcome. Jonah, in the depths he was in chaos. The storm that the disciples faced, they had to face some chaos. Something beyond your control. Something that you couldn't manage to maintain or to keep. The waters, David said, the waters would have overwhelmed us. The chaos should have. This chaos would have. The chaos could have swallowed us whole, but it didn't because God was on our side. Has anyone been in some chaotic seasons? You survived some chaotic seasons. Maybe you're faced with some chaos even now. You're in a good place because he is the God of your chaos. You just got to walk with Jesus through those chaotic seasons. I think about us as a people group. No matter where you come from, what background you come from, we have navigated in recent years some real chaos. Remember COVID? Chaos. Remember coming to church and you had to be 1.5 whatever meters away from people. The church team was trying to work out that. We allowed to breathe the same air as each other. It was chaos. No one knew how to do life like that. It was chaos. The COVID restrictions and all the political stuff that started popping off everywhere. It seems like it was chaos. It seems like we still got political chaos happening around the world today. It was a chaotic season. There's chaos all around at that particular time during COVID. There was the social unrest that was happening as well. All around the world, there was chaos. In that chaotic season, in that chaotic season, you know what happened? My wife, her name is Alicia, for those who don't know. Alicia got to sell pregnant. Alicia, how could she resist? We were locked down for so long. She went to sell pregnant, unbelievable, Alicia. As if we needed more chaos, 11 years after our last child. I was in a sweet spot. I could watch the UFC with my 11-year-old son. We could all the Lego on that. We got rid of all of that stuff. All the little figurines could through that all out. We were in a sweet spot. I could even leave the kids at home for a little bit of time. Not too long, because I'm a responsible parent. We could leave them at home. We had some freedom back again. All of a sudden, Alicia goes and wants to add some more chaos to our lives. I remember being in that room with the doctor. I forgot to think of the word. Anyway, the doctor goes, "Mozletop." What is it? "Mozletop?" "Mozletop." "Mozletop?" Is that the word? "Misletop?" "Misletop." "Misletop." He goes, "Misletop." I said, "What does that mean?" He means, "Congratulations." "Congratulations. What does that mean?" You have an another child. And blessing, absolute blessing from heaven, little jensen. Just want to make that clear. But it was like more chaos to our world. And then at that same time, our church asked us if we would move. We were very happy here on the Gold Coast. Our church asked us if we would move up to Darwin. Anyone been to Darwin? Yes? A couple of people. Listen, even if you're from Darwin, you don't choose to move to Darwin. Unless they're going to pay you a lot of money to move to Darwin. And our church wasn't paying us a lot of money to move to Darwin. They asked us if we wanted to move to Darwin. So we were like, "We feel cold. We'll do whatever God asked us to do." So, Alicia is pregnant. She's about to give birth to a little genty. And so we pack up our family and we're getting ready to move to Darwin. It was the weekend that they were praying us in in Darwin that Alicia on that Saturday morning wasn't feeling well. She wasn't feeling well. And she couldn't fly up to Darwin with us. So I went by myself up to Darwin and I had to stand before the church and convince them that my wife is like a real person. She's not like an internet wife. You know what I mean? She's not asking me to send big chunks of money to her. She's a real human being. Because she couldn't make it up there. It was after that Sunday morning that they prayed us in, prayed me in in Darwin. I got a phone call from my mum saying that Alicia's been taken to hospital. And the psychiatrist wants to talk to you. Alicia was admitted into the maternity mental health ward with postnatal psychosis. I didn't know what that meant. And the psychiatrist was telling us that, "Hey mate, I'm going to be a doctor." I don't normally do this, but you need to reconsider what you're doing. She may not recover from this. And if she does, it could take a whole lot of time. And we didn't know, Jordan was with me. We didn't know what else to do, but to do what David said to do and call on the name of the Lord. So we prayed and we prayed and over the next few weeks, the psychiatrist downgraded her diagnosis and said it wasn't postnatal psychosis. It was postnatal anxiety and she was going to recover a whole lot quicker. So I asked Alicia, I said, you know, in this, just to add a bit more chaos to the situation. I said, Alicia, do we still go up to Darwin? And she said, we have to go to Darwin. So we packed up our family to add a little bit more chaos and moved up to Darwin. We got up to Darwin and it was just a few weeks into Darwin. Our church went into the greatest chaos that it had in its history experience. And I don't know if any of you guys were around in those seasons, but I had some friends and some family like Job's friends and family. They were trying to be helpful, but they were saying, mate, you've missed it. You've missed your calling. You've missed the voice of God. This isn't it. I had people saying to me, bro, in a matter of short amount of time your church is going to be gone. It's going to be over. It's not going to survive this. If you don't come back home, your marriage won't survive. Your children won't survive it. But now we're sitting in 2026. Come on. Look back. When you look back at the faithfulness of God, when you look back at the goodness of God, when you look back at the kindness of God, when you look back at His hand at work in your life, come on, when you just submit it to Jesus, when you call on the name of the Lord, He'll bring you through. God, I didn't do that. God did that. I couldn't do that in my own strength. God did that. And if God did it before, God will do it again. That job is just to keep moving forward. And I see the faithfulness of God. I look back and I see the goodness and the kindness of God. I see His grace and mercy at work. And don't get me wrong, there was a lot of great people in our church and really clever, really smart, really helpful people that stepped in in those really tricky situations, those chaotic situations. And they got to work and they started fixing some things that were broken, repairing some things and mending some things that needed to be mended because sometimes you do have to do an audit. Sometimes you do have to adjust your behaviors. Sometimes you do have to look at what you've done wrong and make right what you've done wrong. And some people got into, got in and started working, but no person could have saved us. No strategy could have saved us, no rebrand or restructure could have saved us. God is the head of this church. Come on, God is the head of this church. God stepped in, God did it and God will do it again. Our job is just keep moving forward. God did it and God will do it. So here's your take home. If you're faced with some chaos, take a look back. The flood didn't kill you. The relationship breakdown didn't kill you. The financial challenges didn't kill you. All that mess that happened in the past didn't kill you. God intervened. God stepped in. God fixed the problems. Yeah. That's a very good place to put your hands together. I love the words, I love the words of that prophetic poetry written who was the artist. That's right, he'll song worship who said, God is fighting for us. He has won the battles. Have faith in what you move. There's nothing, nothing, nothing that he cannot do. Come on, God is fighting for you. God will do it. God did it. He'll do it. Second section of this message is traps. Psalm 124 verse 7 says that we escape like a bird from the hunter's trap. The trap is broken and we are free. We are free. I know we like to keep it positive at Hillsong Church and so we should. But we also need to keep it real. Sometimes we need to just say what it is and call it for what it is. You know the bird in this scenario is prey, symbolic of us. You know that you have an adversary. There is an enemy of your soul, the Bible says. Said to Peter, Jesus said, Peter says this actually, Peter said that the enemy prowls around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. Jesus said this to Peter that Satan has asked to sift you like wheat, Peter. There is an enemy of your soul. There's an enemy of your soul. Church, the hunter isn't playing around with you. He desires to sift you like wheat. His objective is to steal, kill and destroy. We can't play around. We need to stop playing around with the hunter. Come on. Stop playing around. There's lukewarm, one foot in, one foot out. Casual Christianity stuff. It doesn't work. Come on. You want to get into the arms of Jesus as close as you can get under that cross where His blood and His mercy flows down. Come on. The enemy is trying to steal your future. Kill your purpose. Destroy your destiny. He sets traps, temptations, compromise, and vices. I was talking to a young fellow a few weeks back and I said, man, I haven't seen you for a while in church and he said, I've been busy. And I said, where have you been? I've got a new job. He said, working long hours. I've got this job, working long hours and it's got me tired on a Sunday so I'm not coming to church on Sunday. But don't worry about me, gee, this is what he said. Don't worry about me, gee, I'm good. I've got my faith and I'm sorted. I'm sweet. I'm all good. It's just this job I've got. He said, it's just this job I've got is keeping me busy. And now you know when you're full of the Holy Spirit, referring to myself at this point. You know when you're full of the Holy Spirit and God gives you things to say that you don't have the smarts to say yourself. This is one of those moments because I said, bro, you don't have your job. Sounds like your job's got you. I thought that is tweetable. If Twitter was still a thing, I would have tweeted it. But I don't think Twitter is a thing anymore. So I thought, what else am I going to do with this? I should work it into one of my sermons. So that's that's that's that point right there. But come on, we have to ask ourselves sometimes. Is how this boyfriend or girlfriend, do you have it or does that, does it, let's not refer to them as it does, does he have you or do you have him? Does she, she have you or does this passion that you got? Is it a passion you've got or is that passion got you? Now this hobby that you've got is a, is it a, is it a hobby that you've got or is the hobby got you? Is the job that you've got? Has it got you? Or if you got it? Come on. Is it a trap that's keeping you from relationship with God? Is it a trap keeping you from the destiny that God has for your life? Is it a trap that's holding you back and keeping you from the purposes that he has planned to you? You know, traps don't come with warning signs. Traps don't say, you know, traps don't say this is dangerous. We're going to hold you and then we're going to devour you. They don't say that. They look enticing. They're baited like with things and that seems harmless. I wonder what the trap is. Is it a trap of sin that so easily enslaves us? Is it a trap of fear that controls us? Is it a trap of shame that defines you? A trap of bondage that limits you? What trap has the enemy set for you? And if you hear today and you're feeling trapped, there's something that's got you trapped, you're in a good place. I've got some good gospel news for you today that Jesus is here and where Jesus is, people always get set free. It doesn't matter how long you've been caught in that trap. It doesn't matter if it was your dad's trap, your granddad's trap. You know, those old generational curses thingy, the curse was broken. Okay. That thing, that alcoholism that runs through your family line that doesn't look into it. You'll never break it up from that. No, no, no, the curse has been broken. When Jesus went to the cross, he defeated the grave. He defeated the curse was broken. It has no control over you. That old, you know, the family line of divorce after divorce after divorce after divorce and you think that that's your trap. It's not your trap. The curse has been broken. broken. The trapezius sin was defeated, he who the sun sets free is free indeed. The trapezius was defeated, his perfect love casts out all fear. God has not given us the spirit of fear, but a power and of love and a sound mind. The trapezius bondage was defeated. He brought us out of darkness and into his marvelous light. The trapezius death was defeated. And I know whenever you say this, that some people go, but what about my friend or what about my family member? What about my loved one? You know the Bible says it's appointed for people once to live and once to die. We don't like the end of life in this spectrum, but the point of this life is eternity with Christ. We do know that, right? But death to your joy is not of God. Death to your peace is not of God. Death to your purpose is not of God. Death to your calling, Jesus defeated death, hell and the grave. Now death has no sting and the grave has no victory. Anybody grateful that the trape has been broken? Anybody grateful that the trape that had you bound in addiction has been broken? So we will just keep moving forward. That's what David was encouraging Israel. That's what David's encouraging us in this Psalm to do to pause, look back, recognize where your help comes from. It doesn't come from yourself. It comes from God. It doesn't come from man-made things. It comes from God. But here's the danger when we pause and look back. There's two sides to this danger. Some people are stuck and they can't move forward because they're looking back. Paws and look back, but you've got to keep moving forward. Some people are looking back at their past, the negative, the hurt, the offense, the brokenness. All of that stuff and that gets them, that gets them stuck looking back at that stuff. Some people get stuck looking back at the good old days. You know back when there was a move of God, when we were singing shout to the Lord, I was the dear pants by the waters, you know, those old songs, oh there was a move of God, we should be singing all those songs. I'm glad we sang that new song today. What a God, what a God. Hey man, sometimes we can get stuck looking back at the bad stuff. Sometimes we can get stuck just looking back at the good old days that happened. We need to pause, look back, see what God did and keep moving forward. And that's what David is encouraging them to do. Yes, there's going to be more challenges. Yes, there's going to be more things to conquer. Yes, there's more places to take hold of. Yes, there's more souls to win. Let's stop looking back. Yes, see what God has done, but let's start moving forward. Again, and this is point number three, keep moving forward. Jesus said this in John chapter 14, verse 12, He says, "Anyone who believes in me will do the works that I've been doing and even greater things than these. These are the words of Jesus. Anyone who believes in me, anyone who believes in me, anybody who believes in Jesus here, anyone who believes in me will do the works that I've been doing and even greater things than these, not greater as in better, but greater as in further, the scope of what Jesus did. Jesus was limited to his flesh on this earth. But now he's God in us. When the Holy Spirit was poured out on the day of Pentecost, it's God in us now. That's why he said in Acts chapter 1, verse 8, Jerusalem and Judea, then Samaria, then the uttermost part to the earth. You know we're in the uttermost parts of the earth. God in us. We will do see greater things because we have God in us. If you're a spirit-filled follower of Jesus, you have the same authority, the same authority that broke chains in the Bible days. You've got the same authority that defeated death in the Bible days. You've got the same authority that healed the sick in the Bible days because he's God in us. He now lives in you. When you don't know what else to do, when the trap feels tight, when it feels like you can't overcome the pressure, when it seems like it's impossible to overcome when the enemy is loud. Do what David said. Call on the name of the Lord. Call on the name of Jesus. The worship team can come and join me. Help is a person. His name is Jesus. And he still overcomes chaos. He still overcomes the enemy. He still sets a captives three. Come on, I'm not, you know I've been on some leave the last few weeks and I've been reminiscing and thinking about all of the good things that God did last year. I was paused and taken a good look back at all of the good things that God has done in the last few years. God did it, but you know there's greater things ahead. Come on, I'm not settled for just yet. If we can just keep to that standard that'll be okay. No, no, no, there's greater things ahead. Come on, even if it gets uncomfortable, even if it means that we have to, you know, open other services have went concrete out there for more baptisms. Come on, God did it. I'm not, you know, it was a pray, I've got a praise report. Last year we had a hundred people get baptized, go public with their faith in Jesus name. You know what? God did it. God will do it again, but greater things. Come on, we got to start moving forward, church. We don't serve in the average God. We serve a great God. Come on, what a God we serve. So keep walking, keep praying, keep building. Would you stand with me? Keep reaching, keep moving forward because greater things we will see because the Lord is on our side. I said greater things we will see. Greater reach, greater impact, greater influence, greater salvation, greater healing, greater revival. Here on the goal, come on, greater things we will see. So here's your praise point. The same God who did it is the same God who will do it again. The same God who did it is the same God who will do it. He's not just a God of your history, he's a God of your future. He's not just a God of yesterday, he's the God of tomorrow as well. So come on, church, would you start to stir your faith? Would you start to declare the good things that your God wants to do in your life? Our health is in the name of the Lord. So keep moving forward, keep building, keep reaching, keep believing, keep praying, keep inviting, keep dreaming because greater things are ahead of us. Come on, greater things are ahead of us. In Jesus name, in Jesus name. (ch music) Come on. (ch music) Come on. Come on. Yeah. Come on. Come on. He's actually testing my own evening. Yeah. (ch music) Come on. He's the God of hells. He's the God who breaks chains. He's the God who sets the campus free. He's the God who restores the broken. Come on. Now what did you start?
