Deep toward the corner, wood looking up, trouble if it's fair and it is caught. Goodbye. Into the upper deck. Here's the 2-2 swing and a drive by Mayo to deep left field. This one is a no-dowder and it will land about halfway up. Section 104 in straight away left field. The two run homer for a Colby Mayo with a pair of home runs. One of each of the first two innings. The Orioles were their first lead in the series in Baltimore 3 and Washington nothing. The Algaro stance of the plate, Woltz of that high. The pitch on the way, slugged. Deep to right field. What is going back? It's over his head. That's gone. First bomber of the season for Fulton, Halzer. The Orioles have opened up a 6-1 lead. And welcome to Nat Shant. Amal Goldie, host of the Algaro Lee Podcast. I'm joined by Washington Nationals inside our Mark Zuckerman of NatSjurtled.com. At National Park where the NatSjund Sunday afternoon were denied. Three games sweep of the Baltimore Orioles. A 7-3 loss to the O's dropping. The NatSback below 500 in MLB's 2026 regular season 23 and 24. The 23 and 24 made up of the NatS being 8-14 at home versus 15 and 10 on the road. This installment of NatSjatt brought to us by the golf yards in Boston. And then the bulk man Miles Michael is so struggled again. We did get Jacob Young homering again. We did get another extra base hit from K. Bitt Ruiz, who all of a sudden is Mickey Cochran. And we did get an official attendance at National Park on Sunday afternoon of 26,000. 715. So this ended up being a really good weekend for NatS business operations. Baseball is alive and well in Washington DC, certainly disappointing that the NatS lost on Sunday afternoon. But and you certainly got this sense from listening to that manager Blake butar during his post game press conference. Hard to be disappointed with this series from a NatS perspective. Yeah, of course. And the bigger picture this was a very good weekend for the team. I don't care who you're playing. It is really hard to sweep a series from anybody. And so I don't think there's any shame at all in the result of the game Sunday. It did feel I will say like more of a 2024 2025 kind of game for the nationals. They got down early and it just felt like it was kind of over after that. I know there were still within striking distance, but it just never really felt like they were going to do that. I think more times than not this year when they've gotten down, they're still feeling of yeah, hey, this game is still right there for the taking. They might put a at least a scare in a gather team if not even come all the way back. And this one, it just never really felt that way for whatever reason that was. But that's one game in the bigger picture. There's a whole lot to like about how they played this weekend. I really have been playing for several weeks now. So what happened with the NatS pitching on Sunday afternoon is interesting. The NatS user opener who was relief pitcher Richard love lady. He officially allowed two runs in one in a third innings, including in the top of the first giving up a one-out solo homer by Gunner Henderson to the upper deck in right field for one nothing orals lead. Then starting pitcher miles. Michaelis came into the game as an ads bulk man. He officially allowed four runs in five and two thirds innings. Michaelis to the first batter he faced gave up a home run gave up a one out to run homer by Kobe bailed to left field for a three nothing orals lead to conclude a nine pitch played appearance in which Michaelis had mayo down in the count at 1.12. Michaelis in the top of the third of letter run on a walk a single and an RBI sack fly. Michaelis in the top of the fourth allowed two runs as he gave up a one out to run homer by Colton Coulser to right field for a six one orals lead. Michaelis did settle down to tall school is fifth six and seven thinnings but still he officially allowed four runs in five and two thirds innings and he remains is having a really bad season 10 games including six starts E already of 6.91 whip of 1.49. The Nats are doing what they can to help this guy out via the opener strategy but the numbers remain so bad I mean that E already is a troche is 6.91 but I think the intrigue with this actually starts with the opener and you ask Blake butera about this during his post game presser reverse splits for love lady this season and the reverse splits were in effect in this game. But I thought that butera's answer to the topic was interesting so I wonder if you could take us through that. Yeah the numbers are pretty staggering this year lefties are killing love lady and he's been very effective against righties and that's not just in this game but you know overall what he's done and so like the idea of using him first. In front of Michaelis is what you're trying to counteract the Orioles top left handed hitters now Craig Albert has played around a little bit with it they didn't put out their lineup told less than two hours for game time I think and they wound up stacking some right handers I think for the first five in that lineup or right hander so almost a counterbalance to what his good friend Blake butera was doing but in the end. Love lady faces six batters because he came back out to at least start the second inning and faced only two lefties didn't retire either of them gave a home run to gunner Henderson gave a single to Bessio he got all four right handers he got that he faced out so it fit in with what the reverse splits have been showing it maybe seems like that doesn't make sense of why are you using him if the idea is to face lefties when you can't get them out now he did get the righties out so that's not a point. Now you tear his answer essentially is small sample over his career has been better against lefties I don't want to read too much into you know a handful of that that's not really over the course of his career has been much better against lefties and raise and other seasons been a little bit opposite still want him to match up against lefties have confidence in him to get lefties out I think that'll come together. That's fine but at some point you do have to acknowledge like what's happening right now and Richard love lady while in the bigger picture has been pretty good for them he's actually not been very good when specifically brought into face lefties and so maybe the opener role isn't exactly the best suited thing for him now PJ pool and had pitched the night before so that's why he wasn't available to do it this time I wonder if they would have been better off to starting Michael is I'm not sure would have made too much difference in the end but I'm sure that's not the best way to do it. But I'll be curious if we see love lady in the opener role again or if this might convince them to pick some different spots to bring him I do think it's an interesting dilemma how much stock do you put in recent splits versus long term stats you know like if you do have a situation like you have with love lady how much stock you put in what's happening in the now with it happening over a small sample size relative to the entire career which tells you a different story so that is I think an intriguing dilemma. But with Michael is I mean we thought we had seen some improvement we thought we had seen some steps forward and you know he comes into the game and for him to right away give up a Homer was such a buzzkill I mean I guess you know you tip the cap for him settling down and tossing the scoreless 5th 6 and 7th innings but you know at this point I think people are over grating on a curve and giving him a pat on the back when you know he still didn't pitch all that well this is rough I mean a 691 EOR is horrible if you can't overstate how bad that is and the sample size for him has grown here 10 games including 6 starts he's got an EOR approaching 7. Would you believe that the 5 and 2/3 innings he pitch today was actually a season high. You're not thinking in those terms as you watch him especially coming out of the bullpen by the way he entered from the bullpen card the first guy to do that this year he seemed to like it I don't know if he needs to use that again those gave up a home run to the first batter face I'm not sure that's a wise idea to go back to that strategy again yeah I feel like we've had this conversation before not just with him but with some other veterans who've been here in recent years and as you I think the term usually describe for them there there road to know where we know that's the case I think it really boils down to at this point having a better alternative number one and are they willing to eat the money that he's owed now in his case it's not a ton it's like 2.25 million we already saw them remember we already saw them release in the press was on kind of a similar you know pretty modest veteran contract when he struggled so perhaps they're moving closer to that day where they do something along those lines you know here's the interesting one to consider and I don't know if it ties in together or not but Alvarez is still on the active roster. They did not immediately send him down like they did last time. He's been here now, obviously he worked enough that he wouldn't be pitching again for several days whether that's here or in Rochester. My theory was that they're just going to hang on for a couple of days and I believe that Clayton Beeter after throwing a school listening of relief on Rehab at Rochester. On Saturday he's going to make one more appearance. It sounds like probably Tuesday before they would consider activating him. I thought maybe he'd be back on Monday and so they're just waiting to make the Alvarez move until then. If Beeter's not going to
me back until later in the week. If he pitches Tuesday, then you're not going to activate him until Thursday at the earliest. And Alvarez is still here. Well, what's the plan with him? Would they keep him on a starter schedule? Would they have him pitch in relief? Again, could that be a sign of something they might do differently with Michaelis? I don't know the answer to that. I just think it's a little bit interesting that Alvarez is still here several days after he pitched, and it doesn't appear that there's an immediate move coming with him, at least not for Clayton Beater. So unless they were going to bring some other reliever up from AAA, there's not really a move to be made there. Maybe it's a sign that they are thinking about Alvarez sticking around and being in a different role here before long, and maybe Miles Michaelis is tied into that in some way. Well, I was going to bring up the Alvarez angle because I do think that's notable. He was not sent back down off his appearance in game. What are this series? Myping. If the plan all along has been to send him back to Rochester, why didn't you just do that already and bring up some other reliever, and then you can send that other reliever down when Clayton Beater's ready to come back? Like the fact that Alvarez hasn't yet been optioned back to Rochester would seem to be notable. Otherwise, you could have just brought somebody else up, right? Yeah, I think, and I need to look at the roster. I think the only other guy available, healthy guy in the 40-man roster is Julian Fernandez, who hasn't been all that good. I think like Andre Grinillo, they can't bring back it hasn't been enough time has passed. Are you going to use up one of those five options that you get for a year on Fernandez just for a couple of days? It seemed like the pitching staff was in an okay spot, like they weren't desperate for another arm, so maybe that's the idea, and they know that Beater isn't far away, or maybe there is more to it. Maybe they are actually considering how Alvarez could fit in. If they don't make a move before that, and I promise you, I'm going to ask the question on Monday. I didn't ask it yet because it wasn't quite at that point that it seems like really obvious or notable. Assuming they don't do anything before Monday, I'll ask that question on Monday, and let's see what's going on with Andrew Alvarez. Well, I don't like speaking for other people, but I feel like I'm speaking for at least a few people and saying the appetite for more from Miles Michaelis with the Nats is about zero right now, whereas the appetite for more from Andrew Alvarez with the Nats is quite high. I would love to see Andrew Alvarez get an opportunity here. If the Nats do believe in him as a starting pitcher, unless they're really fearful about him facing major league competition, why the heck not? He did pretty well against major league competition last season, albeit in a small sample, but so far this season in two relief outings. I think he has been impressive. Michaelis, as we say, a road to nowhere, Alvarez may be a road to somewhere. I don't know if he's a road to heaven, but he might be a road to someplace fairly nice. The career high five for Jacob Young and the nationals are on the board here with one out of the bottom of the second inning. It's now the Orioles 3 of the nationals one. R behind number 21 for J.Y. The Natsa on Sunday afternoon used two pitchers beyond Richard Love Lady and Miles Michaelis. Brad Lorde tossed the scoreless top of the 8th with two swinging strikeouts despite giving up a lead off single and issuing a one out hit by pitch. Lorde in the inning threw 27 pitches, 19 strikes, 8 balls and then packed in sholts allowed one run in one inning top of the 9th to let it run on a double and an RBI single. With the Nats down, do you think the intent was to use Lorde for the rest of the game and then Blake butyre pulled Lorde because he threw so many pitches in that 8th inning or do you think the plan was to only use Lorde for that one inning? I took a question knowing him and how he can provide you with length. I would guess that they said if he gets through a quick 8th, let's bring him back out for the 9th, the fact that it took so long probably killed any idea of doing that. Although, and I think it's always an interesting question with him because he has been an effective reliever when you use him for two or three innings at a time, you're essentially saying well he's not going to be available the next day and maybe even for a day after that. By holding him to one inning, maybe there's a chance you bring him back on Monday although 27 pitches is a lot, you probably prefer not to have to do it again. I'm going to guess that if he was more efficient, they would have at least considered bringing him back for another inning and once that pitch count piled up, that was the end of that. They threw a lot of pitches in this game. These were some long-age both teams. This was a not super high scoring game that still lasted over three hours and it felt like the back half of this game dragged quite a bit in spite of the fact that there weren't that many runs scored. Yeah, I mean, let's be honest. The Nats are having a better season than the Orioles are having, but these two teams have two of the worst starting pitching in the majors period. The Nats starting pitching is some of the worst in the majors. The Orioles starting pitching is some of the worst in the majors and we saw that a good bit over the course of this series. The Nats offense on the other hand is quite good. The offense in the 7-3 loss on Sunday afternoon. The Nats scored just three runs despite totaling nine hits and drawing four walks. I mean, those are pretty good totals. So the nine hits were a home run, two doubles and six singles, but the Nats went just two for ten with runners in scoring position and struck out 11 times. But Jacob Young, a homer again, he is in that starting center fielder and number six batter, one for two with a solo homer and a walk. Young in the Nats, one runs second, a one-out solo homer to left field to cut the Nats deficit to three-one. The homer was off the Orioles starting pitcher, Brandon Young. So we had Young, homering off Young, but five home runs now for Jacob Young, equalling his career total, entering this regular season. That is something the power increase for Jacob Young, really nice to see. He came into the season with over 1,000 career played appearances in the majors and it had five home runs. He's now got five and I think 168 played appearances this year. Kind of sneaky catching up on all of us with that kind of power. And I think I mentioned the other day, hey, he's on pace for something like 13, 14 homers. No, we're up to on pace for 17 homers on the season. Do I think he's going to get there? No. But what he's doing makes you at least consider the fact that he may have this now in his back pocket as a part of his game that has never previously been there. And let's remember, back in spring training, he was hitting the ball harder, hitting it in the air. There was a concerted effort to try to do that more. So I don't think this is completely flukish. I think it is by design. It's just a matter of can he do it on a more regular basis and throughout the course of a whole season. If he can, and he doesn't have to be a 17 homer guy, if he could even just be a 10 homer guy with that defense and the base ring and everything else, that increases his value in a lot of ways that we have not seen from him before. So it's still too soon to declare anything there, but it is nice to see a side of his game that we really have not seen since he's reached the big leagues. Now his slugging percentage is just 353. So even with the increase in homers, he's actually technically speaking still is not hitting for more power from a slugging percentage perspective. He only has five doubles. He has no triples. But if you just look at it, the power is up. And you know, it's interesting when you look at the nets in terms of players and their individual home run totals, the nets right now have four guys, each of whom is on pace to hit at least 20 homers. It might even be 25. Jameswood, CJ Abrams, Brady House, Dave and Lyle, young is within striking distance of 20. Again, if you look at what he's on pace for, if the nets somehow had five different guys, each with at least 20 homers, how great would that be? And the fact that we can even have this conversation this deep into the season, I mean, who anticipated that? No, that sounds like something we haven't even considered since 2019, maybe 2021 before all the trades. This has been a power star lineup for so long. So it's nice to see that. That can make up for your other deficiencies. They have not been hitting the runners in scoring position, not all the time, but there have been games where that has been a real problem. This was one of them. So if you do have the ability to at least hit some balls out of the park.
and Scorson runs that way. It can make up for a lot of other things. I would just hope, and I don't think it has been the case with any of them, but I would hope that there isn't too much emphasis on trying to hit the ball out of the park and that's coming at the expense of quality at bats otherwise. Again, I don't think that's really been the case there so much, but you do have to be careful not to fall into that trap because you can say, "Hey, I'm going to become, I'm swinging for the fences all the time. I'm going to be a big home run hitter, and then you end up with a much lower batting average, much lower on base percentage." And as you said, not hitting doubles and other things like that. I don't think that's really an issue right now, but watch for that. Well, the Nats, as we are recording this, are number one in the majors in doubles. So the doubles are there. The walks have been good. It's just very little not to like with this offense overall. There are individuals with whom you can pick some nits, but the overall offensive profile has been really good. K-Bert Ruiz, another good game for him. He is in that starting catcher and number eight batter. One for two with a double, a walk, and an RBI sack fly. Another extra base hit for this guy, a walk for this guy who over the years has appeared to be immune to the walk, but he drew a walk in this game two walks now for K-Bert Ruiz in this regular season. And his slugging percentage is up to 483. I'm fascinated by this that this guy is flirting with a 500 slugging percentage. I mean, James Wood has a slugging percentage of 511. K-Bert Ruiz is at 483. Actually, not that far. He's not close, but he's not that far from James Wood slugging percentage. I cannot get over that. How this is just like snuck up on is that K-Bert Ruiz, all of a sudden, has some decent, if not good offensive numbers. That is astounding. I would never have imagined they'd be that close in slugging. And I'm going to go out on the limb here and say that at seasons end, they will not be that close. I want to believe that what K-Bert Ruiz is doing can be sustained, but I need to see a lot more of it from him. We know the track record. He's had little pockets along the way where he can get hot, but he has not shown the ability to sustain that in quite a long time. I hope for his sake, he can. That would be a wonderful development. For him and for the team, they certainly need something out of that position, but he's got a long way to go still to prove that this is not just a nice week, that this isn't much more than that. CJ Abrams, he is an at-starting shortstop in number four batter. One for five with an RBI infield single. What was a rather unusual RBI infield single Abrams in the Nats 1 run 7th, the two out RBI infield single. First of all, this happened on a 0-2 pitch. But second of all, the single went off Orioles first baseman, Peter Lanzo, and the ball actually went across the infield toward third base. And now the 0-2 Abrams pulls around ball the first off the glove of the diving alive. So he bats him all the way past the mound. It rolls all the way over toward third. What has scored? I don't know if I've ever seen that. A bold ricochet off a player and go all the way across the diamond like that. Yeah, there was also the other night James Wood hit a rocket to shortstop that bounced off Gunner Henderson and wound up all the way at left field. Now that's James Wood, you know, hundred and whatever mile an hour shot. So that's a little less surprising. You're right. This one, the way that Caram, the picture I forget who it was at the time, was already on his way running to cover first base and had to like slam on the brakes and turn the other way. Never in a million years thinking the ball was going to be going that way instead. That was a weird one. Of course, it's too bad that that didn't turn into a bigger inning because that inning in particular was an opportunity to try to get back into it. There was a basis loaded situation earlier in the game and the fourth thing and Luis Garcia struck out in that one. So I know it never really felt like they were in this game, but there were multiple opportunities where one big hit would have gotten them right back in the game and they did not do that in this one. Mark mentioned James Wood is an at-starting right fielder and number one batter two for four with two singles and a walk. Did you enjoy not seem Nunez falling victim to the trade turner play in this game? No, I did not enjoy it other than it was I was curious to see Blake butares reaction because this was his first experience with it. Pitched to Nunez. Now, seeing Bunkset kind of pops it up. It lands in front of home plate. A style grabs it throws it first. It's off the glove of Alonzo. The ball dribbles down the first baseline and Nunez is safe on a popped up punch single and have they called him out. I believe they just called him out. Running in the in fair territory outside the runners lane. After it's been such a part of Nationals lore, the Nunez play. I mean, it's a Bunt. He popped it up. It was not a great Bunt. He seemed to like turn around to watch it. It wasn't just focusing on running down the line. And I asked you to tear about it afterwards and I even talked a little more with him after the press conference was over to discuss that play specifically but also in general. And he makes a good point, which is for a hitter, it's so hard to take a direct line to the base and not end up in the grass. And in Nunez's case, he started out okay. He ends up on the grass for a little bit but did make it back to the dirt at the very end. But as the umpire told him, sorry, he was in the grass. I have to call him out. Sometimes it's hard when especially when you bump or you finish a swing where you're like falling in front of home plate to get back in the line. I know he did get in the grass, but I thought that he was going to be safe anyway and he got back in the dirt at the end of it. You know, buteras reaction to that was very different than his predecessors reaction to that play. We keep waiting to see like what would it take to get Blake buter really riled up. I think he said maybe he was only ejected once as a minor league manager. I'll be curious if and when it happens here. What prompts it? So far, he's had some very polite conversations with umpires. I have not seen him really go off the ledge in any way yet and I'm not really sure what it would take for that to happen. Well, the visual of him yelling and screaming at an umpire, I mean from an age difference standpoint, you're talking about like a guy arguing with someone who could be his dad or even his grandfather. Like you think about the dynamics of a situation like that that really would be something. Drop the ball! He got to it and foul ground on the warning track and dropped the ball. That would have been the third out. House has dropped a couple of high pops this year. This one on the run he put the glove over his face and then kind of looked off it. He just took his eye off it. I also wanted to bring up this Brady House in this game as an at starting third baseman in number three batter one for five with a single struck out twice and he had a dropped foul ball error in the top of the fifth. What has happened to the defense of Brady House? Now that was not necessarily an easy catch to make but that was a more than catchable pop up. You know it was an attempt at a running backhanded catch. He's going toward the side wall again not easy but I mean it's certainly a makeable play. The stats back up what we're seeing which is that his defense has regressed. I mean you look at sports info solutions defense of run save last regular season zero which is not bad. That's just league average. This regular season going into Sunday minus four stat cast out of average last regular season plus two this regular season again going into Sunday minus four. What do you think has happened with him defensively? Why is he so much worse this season than he was last season? Yeah I feel like coming into the year our thought was not really worried about the defense let's just see if he can hit the big league level and that has not been the way it's all played out. I think it might be in his head a little bit once you make a few mistakes you start overthinking it and trying to over correct perhaps in some ways. I think when he has time to think about it is more likely to have some issues than necessarily when he just reacts to whatever is happening. I think also we've seen a few times this year the game awareness not being great from him a play happening that doesn't really seem to know where he's going with it or hesitates or you know should I try to cut off this ground or to my left or should I let CJ Abrams go for it. Do I charge this ball or stay back? It comes with experience of course but I do wonder if this is somebody who the more he thinks about it the more they work with him maybe the more gets in his head and we talked about Blake but you're mentioning that a couple weeks ago I wouldn't be surprised if houses on that list of players that they were here actually overthinking it and not just reacting and trusting their natural abilities to make these plays. Well the Nets do win the series they take two out of three games against arguably the most disappointing team in the American league so far the Baltimore Orioles and next up for the Nets on this homestand is the most disappointing team in the national league if not all of M.O.B the New York Mets the Mets are last in the national league is 20 and 26 although the Mets over the weekend the one two out of three games against the New York Yankees to wrap up a five in one homestand so perhaps some life here from the Mets of the Nets have listed the following starting pictures as probable for this series against the Mets game one Monday evening 645 J.Gurvin game two Tuesday evening 645 Foster Griffin game three Wednesday evening 645 Zach let's tell game four Thursday afternoon 405 Kade Cavali you know we earlier in the show talked about Miles Mike
Nicolas is status in the rotation. Andrew Alvarez still being on the major league active roster. What if it isn't, Michaelis, who's replaced in the rotation? What if it is, say, a J-Gurven? You wonder how much is on the line for Irvin in this start? Come Monday evening. Yeah, I think it's a big one for him to get himself back on track, certainly get through the first inning without any troubles. You know, letel, it's an important one for him if he is the starter or if they use the opener for him. There's not a lot of short things as we know. It's Foster Griffin. The surest thing in Cavali, we know that he's not going anywhere because of his importance to them. But I think everyone else, we've been wondering since the beginning of the year, how long would the leash be? And you're now approaching the one-third point of the season in about a week. From now, I think that's an appropriate time to ask those kind of questions. And if guys are not living up to what they're supposed to be or what you hope, they could be, then you start considering some changes.
