OPTIMIZING D&D 2024 WARLOCKS I - Making Deals with Devils... and also with Gabe Greenspan

The transcript promotes Dungeon Flow, a browser-based tool designed to simplify dungeon master (DM) preparation for D&D and other tabletop RPGs. The tool allows GMs to quickly generate complete dungeon maps, including combat scenarios, traps, and narrative elements, by defining room flow. It features AI-generated, creative room descriptions—like handprints or pulsing shrubs—that enhance storytelling without relying on spreadsheets. The tool supports encounter balance through customizable random tables, enemy synergy, and CRMath, while emphasizing fun and narrative over rigid mechanics. The creator highlights that effective dungeon design should be engaging and organic, not formulaic. The platform is praised for its ease of use, instant exportability to virtual tabletops (VTTs), and minimal learning curve. It also addresses common frustrations with traditional prep methods, such as time-consuming spreadsheets and lack of flavor. The discussion includes humor and anecdotes about DM quirks, like aversions to spiders or goblin unions, underscoring the need for playful, creative approaches. The core message is that Dungeon Flow empowers DMs to prep smarter, run better games, and enjoy the process—making it especially valuable for those tired of long, monotonous preparation. The tool is positioned as a joyful, human-centered alternative to mechanical systems, promoting both efficiency and fun in tabletop gaming.

- Okay, okay, I just need one cohesive dungeon map, balance encounters, some traps, and like a vibe. - Actually, according to page 2,449 of the second edition dungeon masters guide, encounter balance requires CRMath, enemy terrain synergy, and at least two nested random tables for authenticity. You gotta have. - Wow, Tyler, you made fun sound like a math final. - It's not just a dungeon, Ash. It's a living ecosystem of narrative risk, and Randall should really hand carve his graph paper. - Just one of the party to fight skeletons in a crept with cool lighting. - How dare you simplify? Don't you know the Goblin's unionized? - Where's your third backup trap table? - Just use dungeon flow before you get buried in another Tyler flow chart. - Hey, I'm Josh, creator of Dunning Flood on App. I built dungeon flow to solve a problem. Nothing for TT RPGs takes too long. - So I made a browser-based tool that pops GMs quickly to slide in London. It's start to finish. You can define the flow of rooms, and the dungeon flow builds the map for you. You can generate combat and commerce for D&D, instantly add traps, export maps for Brent or VTTs, and get a clean DM reference sheet, all of minimal Brent. And for flavor, you get handcrafted AI-free, random room descriptions like. - A stone share lies overturned in the center of the room. - Or a single child size handprint is pressed into the dried patch of border on one wall. - How about a small pot of shrub pulses rhythmically syncing with the heartbeat of nearby creatures? - One creepy, weird, agaspirate, done. And this is just the beginning. I'm constantly updating to it. Next up is dungeon flow and flavor, and enhanced room visuals. So if you're at SDGM who wants to prep smarter and run better games, check out Dunning Flood on App. No slide up needed, just build, export, and avoid. See, a tool made by someone who actually likes fun. - Fine, but only if you let's be used custom wandering monster logic. - It will, it's on the root map. - If you're tired of prepping dungeons, like it's a second job, go to dungeonflow.app. That's it, no downloads, just maps, monsters, traps, and sanity. Again, dungeonflow.app, because spreadsheets aren't a personality. - Spreadsheets aren't a personality, I am personally offended. - I knew you would be, yeah. Need to be said, I don't know. - I'm not your mom, I can't tell you. - Don't have a little word about God. - I'm lightly worried about the God though. - All right, yeah. So we were talking about exclusives on the podcast. I feel like the prime one that I remember that Tyler had, so Gabe, I'm gonna tell you something about Tyler that you might not know. - Tyler, boy. - Does not like spiders. - This is true. - I think a spider dropped from the ceiling in his basement and surprised him. And so we got a very loud. - Yeah, yeah, I had one where I was recording where I didn't see the spider until it was crawling literally right here. - Oh no. - Oh, that's horrifying. - That was the worst. - That's horrifying. - Yeah, yeah. - It's no 100% be to slap the mic. Just like, out here. - Immediate violence. - Yeah. - Do not like that. - Do not like that at all. - It's not great. - Did somebody punch Randall? What went on over there? - Is that? - Okay, before we get going, hi everybody in the chat. It's gonna have you. Welcome. - Hey everybody. - We're gonna do a podcast eventually. Just strapping. We already talked about family-friendly podcast. The other thing, we use hand signals as we go. So you'll see us occasionally doing this because we don't put out the long-for-a video. It doesn't look super awkward. I'm not looking for them. They, when Tyler finally puts these things out and they constantly, we're all sitting here like, and anyway, okay. So if you want to go next, like somebody's talking, but you want to let them finish their rant, but you have something you want to hop in with. If you throw this up, we'll see that a lot of times. We'll point at you, but yeah, you're gonna go next. That's the, you know, so we're not hopping on top of each other. That being said, if you think it'll be fun, funny, like somebody's talking about something, it's like, no Randall, you're an idiot, do it. It'll be great. But if it's just like, I want to go next. Give us this. A lot of times what happens is you do this and then I'll go on a five minute monologue. And I finish what I'm saying. And at the end of it, you're like, I don't remember what it was. - No longer relevant. - Yeah, right. - Or worse, like, I think it's relevant. I don't remember what I was gonna say, like, I was listening, I wasn't throwing it, it wasn't that good. But I was listening. If you do this, this is basically shut up and let me think. We're all gonna get real quiet. We'll just, we're gonna sit down, we'll wait, we'll watch. The great news is, in editing, it's gonna cut all the silence and so it won't be awkward at all. But if you throw up one of these, we're just gonna be real quiet. We'll let you put your thoughts together. Say whatever. - The tongue is optional. - Yeah. - Yeah. (laughing) - The timeless first day. - Right now. - Someone from the rule 20 teams of Weatham and Charity. - Yeah, sure. - I just do tongue no hands. What does that mean? Is that good, bad? - I think we haven't. - I was really excited. (laughing) - How could it be real quiet? - Real quiet. - The real question for a minute is just slowly move towards camera. - That got moist. - Okay. - Yeah. - At the, the only time you're gonna see this at the end of podcast, if we start to do this, this is basically, I think we're done here, like, can we stop? Can we go? If you have something else you wanna talk about, like, some other topic you would did, 100% feel free to hit it. Otherwise, if you agree, give us that. And we'll start going on the exit. On the way into the podcast, I'm gonna start with you. Oh, I'm gonna do him, and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And then I'm gonna say, in time, we have a special guest with us, Gabe Greenspan. At that point, say hi, hello, whatever greeting you wanna offer. I'm gonna hand it to Tyler. Tyler's gonna do a better intro for you. Tyler, do you have that better intro prepped? - I sure do. It's got bullet points and everything. - Beautiful. - Okay. - Okay, we can be professional on occasion. So we'll do the roll through of the introduction. On the way out, pitch whatever you want. Point people to whatever you wanna point them to. After you say whatever you say, I'll promise that we're gonna put whatever you talked about in the show notes within limitations. And kinda remind people, it's like, go click it right now. You can just, you go there. And then we'll do our standard exit. And we'll be done. All sounds good. - Love it. - All right, where it goes. - Okay, all right. - No, we're not. We're just very good at faking it. - No, we need really, man. We're learning anything that's all you need. - Yeah. - 100%, 100%. We're not professional, we're practiced. - Yeah. - Yeah. - Yeah. - That doesn't get onto T-shirt, Bethel. - Actually, yeah. - How if you do it, right? (upbeat music) - Welcome to the RPGBot.podcast. I'm Rennel Jameson with me is Tyler or Camstra. - Hi everybody. - And Ashela. - I wanna make a deal. Let's make a deal today. Make it right now. Don't even think about it. Do you want the extra warranty on that? - Wait, it's only a little bit extra and it guarantees you your sole only way for the next 100 years. - Oh man, I wasn't gonna be using that thing anyway. - Perfect. Now, sign here and here, put here and here and give you me your blood there. And you'll get your sole back in the next five to 10,000 years. Is that worth reading? - Yeah, all right, let me find my knife. But while I'm looking for my knife, tonight with us we have a special guest, Gabe Greenspan. - I'd like to buy a vowel. Ronga, is that the wrong game? Is that the wrong? I do that wrong. - Oh no. - Oh shoot. - Oh man, all right Tyler, what is happening tonight? - All right, so I'm very excited. So Gabe has joined us tonight because we are optimizing 2024 D&D warlocks. So to introduce Gabe, I am most familiar with Gabe's work on TikTok and other short form video platforms or his broken D&D character build. So Gabe is a fellow character optimizer, makes wonderful content, does very good jobs, summarizing complicated subjects in a very small form. A lot of his builds are really fun, check him out. So Gabe is a fellow D&D enthusiast, like I said, character optimization. He's also the co-host of the Total Party skill podcast. I was a recent guest. They make a wonderful podcast. They, lots of fun content, they do home brew, they do every episode, a draft of something related to D&D. That's just really fun, listen to, it's great listening. Gabe is also an actor, he's trained in improv and does stunts and apparently coaches boxing. And I saw on your resume that you're trained in circus. - I am. - Wow. - I'm training the whole circus. - The whole circus? - One last time you were an elephant. - I was an elephant? We're not doing druids today, my man, what are you talking about? - No, I did a lot of circus stuff when I was younger. I went to a theater camp that had a full circus program. - Wow. - They didn't mess around. I mean, it was like aerial stuff, fire twirling, flying trapeze, silks, trapeze, like all of it. It was super cool, I got to do it for years. I went back to teach at that camp in my 20s and I got to teach circus to the next generation. It was super sick, super fun. - That was fun. - That's real. - Yeah. - It seems like such a joke thing. And then I'm like, no, it was like really legit. There's no comedy. - I assumed it was real. I'm still intimidated by how really it was. - Yeah, it's a camp called French Woods. It's an upstate in New York, it rocks. I went there from when I was 13 to like 17 and then getting on my 20s. - Nice. - Okay, awesome, awesome. - All right. So we have to throw fire at people and not burn them. - Yeah. I'm your guy. - Okay. - Nice. - All right. So we haven't done one of these in a while. In fact, I'm pretty sure we have not done one of these since the 2020 for rules came out. Is that right? - We've done two. We did barbarian and monk like right when the 2024 rules came out because the changes were pretty significant. And then we kind of, we put these on the back burner and haven't gotten back into them for a while. And I figured bring Dave on was a perfect excuse. - Yeah, okay. - Makes sense. So remind folks of the format that we're going to go through for the rest of this episode. And it's maybe worth warning folks now. Our expectation, this is going to be a two-potter. So you're going to hear us. - We're going to leave you feed for just a little bit. - But then we're going to come back with another part wrap it up. - Yeah. Okay, so basic format, we're going to go one to 20. Every one of us is going to build our own character. We are going to draft the subclasses so that we're not building duplicate subclasses but everything else is pretty much fair. In the past, we have also drafted spells and other character options, so we might do that. I don't think it matters so much for Warlocks, but when we get to Wizards, yeah, we'll need to do spell drafts. But it's kind of perfect. There's four subclasses for Warlock, and there's four people here. Yeah, so I'm gonna say, I'm gonna say let's open it up to like the current state of play, so 2024 subclasses are preferred, but if you want to dip back into one of the subclasses that hasn't been updated yet, I will tolerate it on max. I'm gonna say, my baby is a 2014 or a 2014 or so we'll see. Okay, so do we want to draft spells? Yes, no. I don't think we need to draft spells for Warlock, and I need to say definitely no drafting invocations because there aren't enough of them for four of us. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Yeah, do we want to pick subclass now or when we get to it? That's a good choice. We should plan our subclasses ahead of time because if we build that levels one and two and then get a subclass, we don't like them. We're kind of in trouble. So how do we want to do this? Do we want to like roll a D4 and see who goes first? I want to go last. I want left overs. Okay, all right, all right. Everybody grab your nearest die. I don't care what die it is that just the nearest one, roll it, highest will go first. That doesn't seem rigged at all. I rolled the one on a D12, so you know, I rolled a six on a D20, which I think is statistically higher than a one on a D12 still. A big yes. I rolled a NAT 20. All right, off to a great start. Ash, what are you doing? Okay, I am going to go with one that I think looks much cooler in the 2024 rules than I always wanted. It's always had a special place in my art. So I'm going to go with great old one. Great choice. All right, you got it next. If everyone else has taken 2024, I'll take 2024. If that's the road we're going down. Sure. Then I got to grab me an archfay. Give me that sweet little teleport. Okay. All right, so that leaves me celestial and great old one. I have a really silly trick. I want to pull off with celestial. So I'm going to go for celestial. I think that makes me fiend. Okay. All right. I will honorably mention the genie warlock, which I think is the best of the best. It's really good. If we're going by 2014, my favorite is actually undead. I think undead is also very cool, especially if you compare it with a gun like on our on our website. Super underrated build. Oh, my God. All right. So we have our subclasses picked. So just going real quick over the basics of the warlock. Obviously, it's a charisma caster. Like nothing super big has changed there from the 2014 rules to the 2024 rules. And proficiency's got kind of an update in the 2024 rules for most classes. So warlocks get wisdom and charisma saving throws. If I remember correctly, they had intelligence in charisma in 2014, but don't don't hold me to that or maybe it was wisdom. I'm off my rocker. Never mind. It's wisdom and charisma. That's the important parts. That was really hasn't changed. One of the big three right has to have been either wisdom or decks are con somewhere in there. That's right. Yeah. Where's my brain? All right. Simple weapon proficiencies and light armor. So like if anything change there, it's a very, very minor. And of course, you get your two standard class skill proficiencies. Since we're doing 2024 rules, we'll pick backgrounds. We'll get an origin feat and proficiencies from our background as well. So yeah, we need to pick species and species and background. Does anybody have any ideas for things that they're excited about? I guess I could. No, I did this last time we made a warlock. I was going to do my warlock that I did last time that had a mind flares worm in their head before Baldur's Gate 3 came out by the way. I keep getting ripped off. So I won't go teafling this time. I think I might just go to elves, get a crystal bonus. I can't remember off the top of my head. Someone else go. John Cena here. Some people say I got range comedy action drama. I'm going to do something a little unusual with this build. I'm going to build a front-line warlock. And since we don't really have a good way to get better AC, starting with the total 17, pretty good. Love that. Love that. What about you, game? I think to do what I think I want to do here, I might go Goliath, the New Goliath. Right choice. New science is very cool. New Goliath has a lot of fun stuff in there. And I think I'm either going, I'm either going Hills Tumble, the hill giant one to get the prone on a hit, which is pretty sweet with an eldritch blast. Yeah, or I'm going maybe frost chill for the speed reduction. If I'm archfam going to be anywhere I want to be on the map, and getting a speed reduction feels really nice. Yeah, sounds good to me. All right, Randall, any thoughts? I'm also thinking Goliath. How dare you? I might, you could do for a giant at least. Yeah. You know what? No, no, no, no. You already ordered the Goliath. I'm not going to hit down that path. I'm going to be boring as a warlock. I'm going to go T-flank. Nice. It's nothing wrong with T-flank. I'm really glad that you asked me this question in this moment. And I think you for it in infernal. In infernal place. All right, so I'm going to have a fiend warlock T-flank. Yeah. In more classic, you could not go. I'm going to go for Drow. It's all a choice. I'm thinking this is going to, the great old one is kind of like an area controlled debuffer situation and getting fair fire and darkness. Feels right. So, yeah, all right. So that gives us our species. What does everybody want to do for their backgrounds? Oh God. I love that you've asked me this. It's not like we knew this episode was coming. I mean, why don't we all just go charlatan and call it a day. Are we allowing for like custom backgrounds as you, you know, the Dungeons and Master Guy allows you to do in the new rules? Or is it one of the player's handbook ones? Let's see. So the, I'm fine either way, just asking. I'm always on the fence about the custom backgrounds in the 2024 rules, because allowing custom backgrounds effectively, like it's a wide open field for character optimization, which from a like I want to build the strongest thing, perspective, obviously that's better, but organize play typically wants you to use one of the published backgrounds. So I try to cater to the broadest player base possible and assume that people aren't going to allow custom backgrounds. But you know, you do you. I'm going to stick to a published background, because that is, that's me. Actually, when I hear your custom background, and I think having one or two custom backgrounds isn't going to break the podcast, but if we eat this on our own, it would be a three part episode. So I support the custom background. If nothing else than to give an example of putting one together. Sure, well, then let me think of one. That makes sense. Yeah. All right, I think I'm going to go for merchant. Yeah, he really scores a lineup. Lucky is a really just solid feat. And since I'm going to be building for melee, I want lucky so that I can try to rescue any like failed concentration saves. All right, I'll go, I'm going to go hermit. I get charisma and constitution. I also get wisdom. Maybe it'll be useful. And, you know, we all know medicine. Super important in this game. So good. So good in 5th edition. This can't be the best investment. And you know who everybody wants to do, like, do a medicine on them. The devil looking person. You look hurt. You want me to help now? No, no, I definitely do not want you to help me. So one thing you will find out about me real quick, Gabe, is that, that unlike these other two, well, Randall Lesso, but Tyler, yes, I'm not much of an optimizer. I'm more of a person who goes for flavor more than anything else, like something that I just think is cool. So I am going to pick Sage because I have in my head that this person was like part of an apocalyptic cult, let's say, and that's why great old one. As far as wizard spell goes, you all are gonna hate me. - Okay. - I think it was silvery barbs for me. - Oh, no. (laughing) - I was about to, I was about to. - Yeah, strictly for the meme, and strictly because I would never allow this in my game. (laughing) - It's so good, but it's so good, but it's so good. - Yeah, no. (laughing) - All right, Gabe, what are you thinking? - All right, I think I'll probably do some sort of like, if I'm creating my own, I'm thinking something like a face scout sort of a thing. If I'm leaning into my fate world, I think I wanna put alert as my feet because I think on a warlock, when you only have those two spell slots for most of the game, if you're doing like a big control effect, I want it to land and I want to land first. - Yeah. - So I think I'll take alert as the feet, I'll do something like perception and maybe like persuasion as my skills feels about right, and then I think you also get a tool proficiency when you make your own, right? Some like that. But maybe take a, honestly, I'd maybe take a musical instrument as one of my proficiencies that feels really fun and then probably like leather crafters tools on this guy to shore up any armor that he'd have out in the field. - Okay, that sounds cool. - Yeah. - Okay, so with that, we now get into the first level class features. So here we get packed magic and now in the 2024 rules, we get eldritch invocations right from level one, which is exciting. So we only get one invocation to start with, but also packed foods are now invocations that we can take at level one. So the field is open. We have so many choices. What is everyone excited about? - I've got mine and it's not close. I'm taking packed of the chain right out the back. - Nice. - What they've done with packed of the chain in 2024 is diabolical, frankly. - It is really good. - It is so unbelievably good. The ability to have a familiar as an action and some of the things that you can have as familiar it's now. - Oh, moly. Yeah, I would want that immediately. - Fair enough. - Yeah. - All right, well, I think I'm gonna go for packed of the blade 'cause like I said, I'm building for melee. So I need a melee weapon that doesn't depend on one of my bad stats. Ash Randall, any thoughts? - I'm gonna go with packed of the tone. - Okay. - Yeah, and then as far as the spells, I'm gonna go back to you on that one. - You're just stacking spells on this warlock between the feet and the tone. - Well, if we're an inventory party, I like to think that my character is more of like the stay in the back, buffer, debuffer, casting type of person. - Nice. So that's what I'm leaning to. - I would like to point out that we came into the warlock episode and Ash is the one building a wizard this time. - Normally, that's my trick. - Yeah, it's true, you Tyler. - It's my trick now. - It's fine if you're gonna paladin. - Oh, okay. - No, I'm just not gonna catch this. - No, I'm excited about this. (laughing) - Tyler, what are you doing? - Your character is gonna be terrible, thank you. - Just wait. No, no, no, no, emotionally terrible. - Oh. (laughing) - Okay, I'm also gonna go back to the blade. - All right. - I don't know what this character is gonna be good at yet. - Well, fortunately, if you change your pride later, you can retrain one of invocation every time you gain a warlock level. So, you'll be okay. All right, what are we thinking for spellcasting everybody with our one spell slot? - Woo, woo, we're not talking cantrips, right? We assume. - Elder and others, if you're doing something exciting with cantrips, tell me about it. 'Cause, you know, we're teaching, we're learning things, we're building cool stuff. Elder's class is kind of interesting. - I've thought on one, but I can't make it happen until level two. - Okay. - When I get invocations that will then benefit the spells that I could get. - Got it. - How many spells do we get at this level? - Two prepared spells, two cantrips. - Well, okay, first off out of the gate, I am going to be taking hex because great old one really benefits from taking hex. So, I'm going to be taking that, 100%. You said we get how many? - Two cantrips, two leveled spells. - Okay, I'm going to do hex and I'm actually going to take which fault because it's actually good now. (laughing) - Yeah, it is definitely a lot better. - Yeah. - Yeah. - All right, I am going to take, like again, leaning into melee, I'm taking true strike and I'm taking blade ward. Blade ward in the 2024 rules, concentration spell, minus 1d4 on all attacks against you, basically. So, yeah, like really nice when I've got 17 AC that's never going to improve and I can't use a shield. So, I figure I'm probably going for a big two handed weapon of some kind, attacking with charisma and then I've got blade ward and then totally see to protect me and then for my leveled spell, armor of agathus because I need those hit points. - Nice. - All right, by the way, I think what I'm gonna take for my two tome spells that are rituals. - Yeah. - A detect magic, obviously. - A choice. - And then I'm torn. - Either comprehend languages for its usefulness or ceremony because it feels right for a cultist to have ceremony. - Ceremony. - The, let's get married for the AC bonus spell. - Yeah, exactly. (laughing) - That's usually why you do it, right? - Yeah. - 100%. - It's like, what is the sanctity of marriage BS now? - All right, I'm also going to go armor of agathus and arms of a dar. - Okay. - Oh, tentacles. - Dang. Actually, yeah, I changed witch bolt to arms of a dar that feels better, more thematic. - Yeah. - Do we lose that? - Welcome back. - Can you guys hear me? - Okay. - Yeah. - No, you're great. - You all froze for a second. - Yeah, you did change. - You're not taking arms of a dar. That's, we didn't hear that, we kept going. - I'm not taking, I'm not taking witch bolt and I'm taking arms of a dar instead because that feels better. - All right. - That's fair. - Yeah. - Okay, so with that, we are through level one. Our builds are starting to shape. Her builds are starting to take shape and also shape takes. I don't know, words are heard. - Yeah. - I've got one other little cheese thing I might want to try with a can trip. - Okay. - Go for it. - Which you weren't allowed to do previously as a world but could be really interesting. I'm going to take magic stone as one of my can trips because I think when you start putting invocations on that, you could get into some really interesting stuff. Like everyone's throwing stones that repel. I'm interested about that. - Yeah. - One of my roommates caught that interaction as well. I was like, so magic stone is really good. - How do you get access to magic stone? - It's just a can trip. - Is that a warlock can trip? - It's a warlock can trip. It was in the elemental evil players companion. - Okay. - You were doing 2014 holdover spell that would be usable now but not in the new handbook. - Yeah, yeah. - It's gotcha, gotcha. You can take that and maybe mind sliver 'cause I like making people fail saves. - Mind sliver is good. - Yeah. - It's a good time. - Yeah, shoot. - And if you have a familiar from back to the chain, you can always hand a rock to your familiar and have them attack. - It is exactly what I was thinking. - Yeah. - Smart. - Okay, wait, wait. Which of you familiar do you want throwing rocks for you? - I think a skeleton or an amp. Either a full skeleton standing there chucking rocks or an amp just invisibly hurling from the sky. Both sound good to me. (laughing) It is the skeleton of Nolan Ryan. I know Nolan Ryan is still using a skeleton. At least I think so. (laughing) - Why, why Nolan Ryan? - 'Cause he's over the baseball. - He's over the baseball. - Real good. (laughing) - Wait, where's it? Randy Johnson was the one who like in his career killed two different birds. (laughing) - One time his coincidence, twice is the habit. - Yeah. - No, not mine. - Tyler, do you support this activity? - Killing birds depends on the bird on a sling. - That's right. - It is a running joke in my life that I- - It's not a joke. - Do not like very specific types of birds. Mostly gold and candy that geese. Other birds mostly fine. - My wife also wanted that to a sense. - My wife also hates geese, so you're not alone. - They suck. - Yeah. (laughing) - Yeah, that's right. - It's round and round candy balls. - Yeah. (laughing) - All right. - Yeah. - He's first dirty, just talk about it, look at him. - Yeah. - All right, level two, we now get magical cunning. So this is one of the new features that we got in the 2024 rules. So you can spend a minute staring into the middle distance dramatically. And at the end of it, you get back half of your pack magic spell slots. - Yay. - Yeah, up to half of your expended pack magic spell slots. So if you've only expended one spell slot, it's gonna do exactly nothing for you. But if you're out of spell slots, then yeah, this is nice. - Yeah. - Unfortunately, it is only once prolonged rest, which is a shame. - Yeah, it is a shame. - And it will never get you who more than one spell slot until incredibly high level. You're probably not gonna play this character that long. But tonight, we are, so it's exciting. - Oh, actually, I'm slightly wrong. It does specify round up. So if you've spent one spell slot, you can recover your one spell slot. - That's right. - And when you have three spell slots, you can recover as many as two, which is nice. - That is nice. - Let's see. So we each get two more eldritch invocations at this level. - So, so many choices. What's everyone excited about? - Oh God. - Don't ask me that question. These are my lean into my canter, at these like pre-level, five levels, I think Warlocks are so fun because anything is an Eldersplast, you know like at five you get the two beams and it sort of starts to pull ahead of the pack, but like kind of right now anything could put these agonizing blasts, repelling blasts type stuff on it and be really fun. Something like, you know, if you took like sword burst as a canter and put an agonizing blast on that, that's fun. If you find yourself in the melee, repelling blasts just launch everyone away from you under your presence. Yeah. Because it's not expand and just get everybody out of there. Alright, so I guess on that note, just I'll go and get it away. Agonizing blast, it is repeatable. You can take it more than once. I'm doing agonizing blast twice. I'm interested on which canter is. I love the vascular that question. So I have to pick a canter, but I'm going to pick it. Oh wait, let me read this more carefully, because I initially read this as I could take it. And I could play it the same canter twice. No, that's not allowed, unfortunately. Come back to me then. Alright. Okay. I am going to take, I'm going to take agonizing blast and fiendish vigor. Fiendish vigor got a really nice buff in the 2024 rules. 2014, you just cast false life, but you could just cast it over and over until you got the maximum number of temporary hit points. They realized that that was absurd, so now you just get the guaranteed 12. So 12 temporary hit points is like two levels worth of HP. And if I'm trying to be on the front line with 17 AC and a bad idea, then that's really good for me. Hmm. I'm going to take agonizing blast on elder-class classic, and then I'm going to take for my second one lesson of the first ones, is that what I was talking about? Yeah, lessons of the first ones to take alert. Good choice. I'll probably go, honestly, I think I make one of mine the otherworldly leap, because jump has gotten so much better. And if I already want to be nowhere where combat is, this is just another tool in my arsenal to do that. That's pretty cool. Between this and what I'm about to get at next level, I can be far, far away and a very happy man. Yeah, that is fair, yeah. Yeah, for sure. See, we're going to go agonizing blast and repelling blast on eldritch blast, and we're just going to blast everything. Perfect. Nice. Okay. Also, we get one more spell at this level. That's true. Yeah. Is there anything else that folks are excited about level one spells? I'll shout out protection from evil and good. Yeah. If you're trying to say, I mean, listen, you're probably fighting these types of creatures less frequently at this level. You know, I don't know how many swarms of Celeste shields you're fighting as a level two character, but that being said, if you do find yourself in that kind of a campaign, everyone having disadvantage against you is pretty, pretty good. Yeah. All right. Oh, I want to call out one silly thing that I'm doing. Ash, go ahead. Yeah. I'm going to pick Crown of Madness for my next spell, okay, because I'm going to be, I think we can pick that now. Can we or no? That's a side level. Technically next level, but you're, you know, you're getting ready for what's to come. I'm good at this game. I swear. I never mind. Yeah. I don't know. Did you have something Tyler? Call out an interaction, so I'm taking agonizing blast with true strike as one of my invocations. I'm already dealing charisma modifier damage with my weapon. So let's say I'm using a great sword because there's no longer the heavy restriction in 2024. So I'm doing 2d6 plus now double my charisma and I've got pretty good. All right. I changed my answer. I'm going to take pain instead, because I'm going to be getting some features soon that allow my enchantment and illusions to be better. So I'm going, "Hello, Sherbuke, please stop touching me." Now keep in mind, you'll get that one prepared for free because you're a tiefling. That is true. I'm picking something else. I never, I never claim to be good at this. I don't know why. Keep going. Yeah. Now me and Randall are just flying by the seat of our pants on this point. I'll say if I did my, my stones thing, I'm probably grabbing repelling blast to put on magic stone at this point, because I think that is a, at this level, 30 foot pull hush if everything hits. Yeah. Which is significant. Yeah. If you have enough creatures to throw the stones, yeah. Correct. Correct. Yeah. So I like bane. Like, bane is such a weird spell. I almost never actually use it in combat because like you put bane on things and then they die and you feel bad because you've wasted bane. What I like bane for is fishing for legendary resistances because you hit a, you hit a boss monster with bane. They fail the save. Are they going to suffer one D4 on all of their attacks and saves for the next minute, which is just going to like a cascading failure or are they going to spend a legendary resistance on a level one spell and both of those choices suck. And I. Yeah. Yeah. No, I'm going to be abusing bane. Yeah. I think with the addition of stuff like, I've seen people talking about this and I think it's absolutely right with the addition of stuff like weapon masteries and things to the game that make enemy saving throws far more frequent across classes across marshals and everything like that. I think bane has become only more useful in the 2024 rules because now they're subtracting that D4 from the topple property. You know, like there's things that really start to build together to make that even more potent. Isn't topple the only weapon mastery that requires a save if I recall correctly. It is. Yeah. I think so. Yeah. The others should. I agree with you. The other should, I'm saying, but you're totally right. Yeah. Well, if everyone's using quarter staffs and tritons watch out bane just became the thing to use. Yes. 100% 100% love the 2024 triton. So good. Yeah. It's ridiculous. Oh man. Warlocks. I don't know. All right. Level 3, we finally get our subclass. What does everybody get? Oh, boy. I'm excited. I'll go first. So I get a bunch of different features. So the first is I get a weakened mind, which allows me to form telepathic connections with other people and I can choose one creature as a bonus action. And then we can tell we can communicate telepathically. And I can do that with a number of miles equal to my charisma modifier. That's fun. Talk about I assume subclass spells separately or should I just go over that now? Yeah, going next up. Okay. I get detects thoughts, dissonant whispers, phantasma force and Tosh's his laughter, all great spells. And then I get psychic spells, which is when I cast a spell that deals damage, I can change its damage type to psychic. And when I cast Warlocks spell that is enchantment or illusion, I can do it without verbal or somatic components. So cool. Yeah. How about you, Gabe? What are you getting? I become night crawler. I get for my spells, I get comm emotions, fairy fire, misty step, phantasma force and sleep, all great. And then steps to the Fey, which is you can cast misty step without expanding a spell slot, a number of times equal to your charisma modifier per long rest. In addition, whenever you cast that spell, you can choose one of the following additional effects at this level. There's only two, but then more later on, which is refreshing step, which is after you teleport, you were a creature you can see within ten feet of your shell's self gains one de-ten temporary hit points, nice little bonus, and taunting step creatures within five feet of the space that you left, most must succeed on a wisdom saving throw against your spell safety sea, where I have disadvantage on attack rolls against creatures other than you until the start of your next turn. And since I've only been taught, nowhere near combat, that is an incredibly powerful tool, I think. Yeah. Yeah. 100%. Right. What have you got? I've got zero hit points. I get some temporary hit points. That's going to be exciting. Fiend spells. I get burning hands, command, scorching array, and suggestion. Pretty good. I love scorching. All right. I get healing light. So I get a pool of D4s equal to my one plus my Warlock level. As a bonus action, I can spend some of them to heal people. So it's basically like a pool of caltraps that I can throw at you for healing like healing word. It's pretty nice. It's not a ton of healing. I'm basically only going to use it in emergencies. still, it doesn't eat in my spell slots, which is nice. Spells, I'm basically just robbing the cleric. So aid, cure wounds, guiding bolt, less frustration, light, sacred flame. The beginning of my day, every day is I wake up, I cast armor of agathis, I cast aid to raise my maximum hit points, and then I go back to sleep for another. I just mash that snooze button and lie right back down. I could save aid for emergency combat healing. No, no, I won't. I just imagine you like ruling out a bed, genuflecting, rolling back at a bed and immediately storing again. And everybody else in the party is like, I don't want what I'm out of spell slots. I just woke up. Randall, what are you getting? Oh, I caught it out a second ago. So yeah, I went through feed spells and I get temporary hit points when I kill something. Yeah. What about everybody's next spell? You get one more. Oh, that's right. We have level two spells now. Well, I'm taking crown of madness now. What about that? What about what about crown of madness excites you, Ash? I don't know. It's thematic. And I'm going to be messing with people's minds a lot. So yeah, I've already got business whispers. Wait, hold on. Can I get what I want to get here? No, not yet thing. Okay, I thought I was hoping I got hypnotic pattern at this level, but no, yeah, I forgot spray of cards exists. Always spray of cards. It's so stupid. I love it. It's so silly, but a blind effect is fun. Actually, I might take spray of cards. That's not a terrible spell for a melee build. It's not amazing, but it's not awful. Blinded. It's nice. Same with crown of madness. It's not amazing, but it's not terrible. Either mirror image feels like a pretty solid fallback. Yeah, definitely. Or if I have, if I'm still doing my magic stones thing, I would take a lock of familiars at this level. So I could have three skeletons and they could all have their own stone. That's hilarious. Oh, my God. So are folks familiar with the history of lost laboratory of qualsh? What now? I mean, I know the book, but I don't know the history. What did you say to me? So flock of familiars and few other spell specifically around familiars are in D&D Beyond. They were published in an adventure called lost laboratory of qualsh. This was published by the D&D Beyond team before they were acquired by wizards of the coast. So it's not official D&D content. Like it's not adventurous league. Oh, hilarious. Yeah, but people make the mistake because it's on D&D Beyond presented alongside all of the other first party material. And it's just kind of been their mothballed for almost a decade at this point. That's funny. Yeah, it's not like it's not a terribly broken spell. It's a lot of fun. And white people like it. Yeah, super weird and unique. Yeah. I'm going to go a whole person. Just make it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Let's just say I need to so quickly run to the restroom. If that is not too destructive. I'll be right. Yeah. We'll just stand here like this. Oh, Lord. Oh, God. I cannot blink for that long. That hurts. Yeah. No. Don't do that. Don't don't hurt yourself for a bit that no one will see. Do I just quick refresher? Yeah. Go. Okay. Now's the time. Dan, cut this out. You won't. I know. It's kind of funny or when he doesn't, but also. Yeah. He's left in when we have technical difficulties. So he just leaves pretty much everything in so how is everyone's weekend? Yes, Tim. Thank you for the fun questions. My weekend was good. How about yours, Tim? Good. Oh, yeah. That tomorrow is the first session of my crown of the cobalt king since the almost TPK. So that's gonna be fun. Yeah. Man, writing that high of surviving a TPK because you forgot a plus one. The pathfinder experience. Hey, man, it's exciting. For a while, it was a joke in PF one that you never actually missed attacks in PF one. Like it was forgotten modifier. Exactly. It wasn't a matter of did you actually miss? It's do you know the rules well enough to come up with the nonsense plus one attack bonus that you need to not miss? Well, hey, I mean, as Quasit said, pathfinder 2's math is so tight that literal plus one saved our campaign. Yeah. God, I love PF 2. Yeah. All right. So I believe where we left off, we were looking at level three stuff. So I'm going to call it level three is also would we first start getting access to the invocations that let us improve our packed food. So if you wanted to retrain an invocation at this level, this is a great time to do it. So I'm going to retrain Fiendish Vigor into improved packed weapons. So now I have plus one to attack and damage on my greats order, whatever I decide to use. So now not only am I doing more damage per attack than everyone else, my attack bonus is also better. So there. So there. I'm with you fellows. Okay. Wait, real quick. So if you if you have gone packed to the blade. Yes. Is there any other choice at this point? I mean, there's no new choice, I guess. I think it's a matter of like if you wanted to be doing something specific, like if you really wanted to with your packed of the blade have now grabbed packed of the chain to give yourself advantage on stuff. Or if you wanted to grab lessons of the first ones for alert or something like that to make sure you're going first. But I think that like the plus one is such a solid choice. Yeah. But I think maybe more what I mean is like if you have gone packed the blade then following Tyler, what you just said makes a ton of sense because like I'm I've already committed. What do I want to do? I'm I'm going to use charisma as my modifier. I'm going to stab things. I'm going to hurt them getting that additional plus one just makes a ton of sets. Exactly. All right. That brings us to level four. Our first ability score increase slash feet. As I'm sure everybody knows at this point, 2024 rules, all of the non-origin feats also come with an ability score increase. So if we all built with like 17 charisma at level one, then this would bring us to 18 and also get us other cool stuff. So what is everyone excited about? I listen. I know exactly what I do. And I'm going to lean in. I'm taking pay touched because I want more messy steps. My my guy gets so much out of messy stepping that being able to do it once again for long rest for free actually gives a lot to what I'm doing. And this way I could pick up if I wanted I could grab Hunter's mark so that I don't need to waste a warlock spell slot on hacks. If I was so inclined to boost the damage in that way. Makes sense to me. I can't remember. Does Hunter's mark apply to all attacks or just weapon attacks? I believe it's all attacks, but I could be wrong about that. One, two, three, magically mark one creature and blah, blah, blah, whenever you hit it with an attack roll. Yeah, it is any attack. Perfect. Yeah, yeah. All right. Clean subsuit for hacks. Nice. I have 17 AC and blade ward running. So like, I'm not super frail, but also blade ward goes down. I'm very suddenly in trouble, so I want to maintain concentration. Also, the ability to use a cantrip when or any other spell really to cast a spell when someone forebokes an opportunity attack from me, that's pretty great. So if I can draw an opportunity attack, then like that's another true strike with double my charisma and that's pretty good for me. Ash Randall, anything cool you're thinking about? I'm thinking telekinetic. Yes. Yeah, feeds into it. Into the whole thing. Magehand. Invisible. Magehand is good. Plus, combined that with my hex buff later on, that's going to make that strength save real rough. Yeah. Yeah, that's going to be fun. I'm going to do that. I was playing on taking resilient, but I want to bump my charisma right now, so I'll do that. Okay. What I'm going to say may sound a little bit lame, but in our Dragon Lance campaign, I saw this be incredibly impactful to the point of driving me the DM, absolutely like batty. I'm going to go inspiring leader. So I'll give my plus one a charisma and at the end of every short or long rest, I get to talk for like five minutes and all of you feel good. There you go. Yeah. Okay. Actually, at this point, I'm just going to try to lean in. I'm going to build the bardiest warlock we ever had to go in. So when I'm doing a great job, you know, we had our cleric bar, Ash is building a wizard, Randall's building a bar. Gabe, you're basically building a rogue when you think of a rogue is what I was going to say. Yeah, I think. Yeah, no, it works out well. Got a plan. Not one of us is actually just building a warlock. What were we thinking? Why would you? Yeah. We're old warlocks on this cursed day. I was saying that that is a thing that I think of of the 2024 warlock, they've really allowed you to kind of do like the fact that you can sort of be like, Hey, I'm a world, I'm a go full warlock, but I'm going to follow a playstyle of almost an entirely different class is really cool, like I think of that that's optional is pretty sick. Yeah, we're actually making a relatively balanced party right now. It's crazy, very charming, well balanced party. What's everybody taking for their next spell? Oh, gosh. Yeah, I guess we have another level two spell to consider, don't we? I'm going to take a page out of Gabe's book and take Mirror Image. Yeah. Good choice. I'm going to go for Misty Step, but I'm going to use it the exact opposite way of everybody else. I'm going to use it to get into danger. Yeah. Fair enough. Beautiful. Okay. How do you feel about Raven Feebleman? Because I feel like it's just never going to hit, right? I mean, it's a constitution save, which is always hard. They are like on average one or two points higher than everything else for the entire level span. That was true in 2014. It's still true in 2024 as far as I've seen. Yeah. And if they do fail the save, it's just to disadvantage on strength based D20 tests. So checks, saves, attacks, so it only works on some monsters and the ones that you want to be bad at strength are also the ones that are best at high constitution. Yeah. Okay. So really, they didn't do anything to repair it until now, unfortunately. I also think for a warlock, it's not your strongest choice because it doesn't scale at all. It would be good at this level, but because packed magic works the way it does, what you get from that spell will be as good at level three as it would be at level 20. So I think that maybe not your best shot. Yeah. I think that's an honest assessment. And hearing that, I'm going to take invisibility. Good choice. Yeah. Good choice. Also doesn't scale. That's party. Level. Does it need to? No, invisibility scales. It adds extra targets. It does. Oh, brilliant. Yeah. Yeah. We get two more invocations and another spell at third level. Now? Yeah. What's everybody doing? Now I'll grab Eldritch mind, which is why I didn't take Warcaster at four because I think that you can get that concentration, adventure concentration easy enough through the warlock that I could take that now and feel okay. Yeah. Two more invocations. I think so normally on a packed at the blade build, I'd be going for first thing blade at this level to get the second attack. But since I'm building around true strike, I don't need to. I do get another 1d6 damage out of true strike, which is nice. Yeah. God, now I scramble through my own articles trying to remind myself what my plan was. I swear I had one. I'm going to take gaze of two mines and I'm going to take one with shadows. One. There you go. Randall can cast invisibility and I can cast gaze of two mines on him and see through his senses while he goes and explores. I'm going to take repelling blast because I hate my DM and I am going to take the other one is Eldritch mind because I'm going to be doing a lot of concentration spells and I need to not lose concentration. I'm going to go with my other one, probably investment of the chain master to improve upon my pack to the chain that I already have going. I trust. I want to call it a thing because this feels like the place to do it. I know that this is a bonus action now with investment of the chain master, there is a possibility. And this is getting real great. Yeah. I'm going to do it as a bonus action now with investment of the chain master. There is a possibility. And this is getting real granular rules as intended versus rules as written here. The way that find familiar works is the spell is that you can use your bonus action to have them take the attack action otherwise they cannot attack on their turn. The sting in the 2024 rules is a saving throw not an attack. Yeah. Is there a world in which you do that as a free action commanding the familiar to do that on their turn because it is not an attack that they're taking. It is just a thing in their stat block. I guess isn't the action an attack action, even if there is no, yeah, there's no attack being made. They're not taking the attack action. They are taking the sting action, which yeah, they can do on their turn no problem. Okay. Yeah. You wouldn't be able to command them to attack to do it, but they can do it freely on their own turn. Right. And because I'm using my bonus action to teleport probably now I'm using my action for attacks using my tell them their turn for their knockouts and teleporting around as a bonus action. So my I'm full. I got my whole slate full here. Yeah. Yeah. Our our 2014 archfay warlock guide I built around packed of the chain using a sprite because once you have once you're using your safety, see, you just put everything to sleep solves all your problems. You never have to get out of the chair. That rocks. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. So with my you looking at it. So with yeah, my new found love of invisibility. I'm going to take one with the shadows when I'm in dead light or darkness. I can cast invisibility without expanding a spell slot. So lots of invisibility and occasionally I do it in full daylight and then I'm going to take thirsting blade. Good choice. As far as spell goes for my first third level spell, I'm going to take hypnotic pattern. Nice. Love hypnotic pattern. Great. Yeah. What about the rest of you? It's so hard not just defaulting to hunger of hadar because it's so good. I get it for free. Yeah. We get subclass spells. Don't forget about those. Yeah. Yeah. At this level. Okay. Yeah. We should say what we get at this level for our subclasses. I get slight review of a five so I'll just sit on those and hope to never need them. I get. I get clever. I get clever. Okay. And hunger of hadar. Obviously those are both good. Yeah. What do you get? Plant growth situationally very useful and blink, which is one of my personal favorite spells in the game. I love blink so much. It's such a little weirdo spell, but I really like it. So I didn't ask how big the room was. I said I cast fireball. Okay. So I want to point us back to plant growth for a minute. So the issue with plant growth is there have to be plants in the area, right? Yes. The spell doesn't specify, say that again, back of plants, we got a back of rats. Why can't we have a back of plants? Yeah. Like literally, the trick is you walk in, you drop a potted plant and you leave. It doesn't specify how big the plants have to be or what state they have to be and they just have to be there. It's quite literally the jack sparrow. I've got a dorm to it. I'll have to. Yes. Exactly. Perfect. Okay. Mine level three spells, I get daylight and river from high. So I'm not doing anything active with those really. Daylight is actual daylight now. So vampires everywhere would be where, but if my third level spells, I'm going to pick up spirit shroud, which is pretty great. Any attack that I make against creatures within the ten foot and foot radius gets some extra damage and in addition, any creature of my choice that you can see that starts to turn within ten feet of me has its speed reduced by ten feet. So I've got a little bit of stickiness. So I'm getting a little tankier as enemies are forced to stay closer to me. Plus, since our spells improved, aid and hunger for Dar are both giving me more durability. So I'm harder to get away from. I'm doing more damage and I'm more durable. All right. So since we've wrapped up the first tier of play, do we think we should end it here and pick it up next time? I think so. That is typically where we call it. So now is a good time. Yeah. Randall, you want to take us out? Yeah. Absolutely. Wait. Like in the episode or like, I mean, you brought fireball. That's fair. Okay. Run. All right. No. Okay. Gabe, thank you so much for being with us today. Yeah, I would be here. All right, and where can folks find you on the internet or wherever you sought to be found?
