Lauren and Chelsea reflect on their experience with the John Galliano x Zara collection, describing it as an extravagant, box-by-box unboxing journey that ultimately led to a messy return due to over-packaging. They highlight several standout pieces, including a deconstructed skirt and a daring slashed slip dress, while critiquing the impracticality and inauthenticity of some designs. The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is praised for its return and focus on lingerie, with strong styling in the pink section and vintage-inspired looks, though criticized for excessive decoration, unrealistic beauty standards, and questionable historical accuracy. The Academy Museum Gala showcases timeless fashion, with standout red carpet appearances from Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian, and others, reinforcing old Hollywood glamour. The hosts also discuss broader fashion industry issues, including creative instability at Alexander McQueen and Calvin Klein, and the growing fusion of film and fashion in storytelling. Finally, they critique the *Carrie* adaptation for distorting the original story into a superficial, *Mean Girls*-like narrative, lacking emotional depth and authentic representation of adolescent cruelty or abuse. Despite some artistic flourishes, the show fails to honor the source material’s gravity, instead prioritizing surface-level drama and fan fiction elements. Overall, the conversation reflects on the evolving role of fashion in pop culture—balancing innovation with authenticity, and maintaining respect for both storytelling and real-world experiences.

I spent $40,000 on shoes and some other money. Great down, beautiful downs. That's a change. Oh, it happened. Hi, I'm Lauren Garoni, and I'm Chelsea Feralis, and welcome back to the Every Outfit podcast. We really have a popery of random pop culture things to discuss. Yes, but I thought we could start this episode by reporting back regarding our John Galliano Zara purchases, so that it can indeed be a business expense. Look, IRS, we talked about it on a podcast episode. So we received the bulk of our Galliano XARA shipment. It came in like a little bit one weekend, and then we finally got the big thing. It came in four different shipments, but it might as well have been 30 different shipments because I think an experience that is being undersold on the internet is that you receive these Galliano pieces box by box. They are individually boxed and then sent to you, which does make for a very wonderful unboxing experience, except if you ordered 30 things because you weren't sure what was going to work. Okay, we didn't order 30 things, but like we probably ordered 15 or something between you, me, and Tat, and it was like absolutely insane, like generating the return because they gave me seven different return labels. This is the one time it might make more sense to go into the store to do a return where it's like, you know what, poor ZARA worker, you deal with it. You couldn't return the Galliano stuff in the store. I would have returned it at the grove had I been able to, but it's because they shipped every single piece in this like elaborate fancy fabric box, which they clearly did to make the whole experience feel more upscale to justify the pricing to make the unboxing videos that people inevitably post on TikTok look fancier. And it worked. Maybe we should get into the clothes, sorry we've spent this much time talking about the experience of receiving them, but that was our first experience with the clothing. I ended up with two pairs of gloves, an elbow length, like black leather glove and an elbow length tool glove, and then this came in yet another shipment Lauren, but I also got this really beautiful slinky deconstructed black MIDI skirt that looked like it was two skirts combined into one, like the waistband was like one skirt and the rest of the skirt was another skirt, if that makes any sense. It absolutely does because I did have my eye on that skirt because I think that was one of the strongest, Galiano Exara pieces. For those who don't remember, Chelsea was up at one in the morning getting this drop for us, and so I got your curation of things for me, which might be the most successful out of the three of us. Yeah, you got more stuff than anyone. I got a skirt. I love how you were explaining your skirt of like if you can imagine it's like two skirts kind of sewn together, it's like they all look like that. That's true, but your skirt also looks like it was a normal white pencil skirt and then something horrifying happened and it kind of exploded like come to Garçon style. Yes, my white skirt is very comb focused. What I tried it on, you were like you could get away with wearing that, people might think it's comb. The thing that I don't think is represented by any of these trion videos or the press coverage is it's a real choose your own adventure trying to get this clothing on. My skirt doesn't have a zipper. It just has a tie and I said to Tatiana, I was like how do I how do I close this and she goes why are you asking me I'm like I don't know you're the stylist. It has these two uneven strings that you tie together to make sure that the skirt doesn't fall off your body. Wow. I did not know that. But I feel like the standout piece you got was this brown lace trimmed slip dress that was like typical bias cut galliano slip dress, but had been slashed at the stomach. So it's like the entire stomach is exposed. The fabric is like flopping over like someone just came in with a razor. Very good piece and one that not many could pull off. No, although still trying to figure out what exactly I'm putting underneath it because you are correct in your entire stomach is exposed and so you need to have like a real grace Jones personality to pull off this dress and I don't know if I do. I think that's the sort of thing that you could wear to like a destination wedding in a tropical area. If you were invited to one or yes, you wear a tight little sweater underneath it, speaking of which the last piece that I kept from this galliano Zara collection is a very Prada Esk sweater, like a short sleeve sweater. Everything that I that ended up working on me does just look like other designers. I'm realizing. I know. I wanted to get that for myself. I don't know why I gave it to you. I was trying to like figure out our order on the fly. It was difficult. I will say, but it's a really, really good piece. And you're right, very, very Prada. But other things just looked insane like I tried on a fur collar that was like the scariest thing you can imagine. It actually choked me. Well, that was another piece where we turned a tad and we were like, how do we affix this? And she was like, why do you keep asking me? She did come away with a nice suit though. That might have been the best piece. And again, it looks kind of yoji-ish, although it can be cinched at the waist and be very galliano if you want it to. It's a versatile piece and I'm definitely going to steal that from her at some point. But I try on other suits that were just like not it. But you know, you have to try on three to get one. Hopefully for the next drop, some of the stuff will be in store so we don't have to receive 52 boxes. Let us pray. OK, moving on, oops, we did it again. We watched the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. And the thing about the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is that it is consistently fun to watch and I never have something better to do. Like not once in my life have I had plans that have conflicted with lingerie's biggest night. Do you think that's happened, Stan's? Or you just have it in the back of your mind that the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is happening? I never know it's happening until the day of. But I'm always just home, you know, ready to accept it. I think it was a smart decision to have it on a Sunday night. That is the evening that we're usually ready for an award show or something like that. So the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show happening, we were ready for it. Even though we had no idea it was happening until truly 24 hours before, I got a text message from you when you were like, it's live. But I was like, bitch, do you think I don't know when I just sent you a video of my, my son just completely awestruck watching the TV? I also watched it with an awestruck toddler. Quite the experience. Fashion wise, I do think there was a noticeable improvement from last year. Because Barbie Ferreira was not forced to wear a bedazzled denim jacket this time and I think that was a win for everybody. So this is Adam Selman's second Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. He is the overall creative director. He has many titles. He's overseas the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, the stores, the creative direction. And I think why this show was stronger than last year's was to your point about Barbie Ferreira and the denim jacket. They kept it to lingerie and lingerie related clothing. They didn't try to turn clothing into lingerie. I mean, there was the Victoria's Secret pink section. The pink section, which I always find to be fascinating, I love how in the pink section have they really captured that college girl styling thing where she's wearing like 50% like actual street clothes and 50% pajamas. Also we should mention that this show once again was styled by Carly and Surf to Dudziele. And I think the Victoria's Secret pink section is where she really let loose and did her thing. I mean, this is funny to say about Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, but the pink section was maybe the most maximalist totally. And again, the styling was so good it was like hair claws everywhere. It was like those little Victoria's Secret pink dog key chains that they sell at the front register like everywhere. So when did they introduce that dog motif because it's always been a part of the Victoria's Secret pink branding, but I just kind of don't know why. What's the dog about? You would think it would be a cat if anything because of pussy? Because I don't know, cats are more feminine and sensuous and like I would think a cat would be more aligned with the Victoria's Secret brand than a dog. Call me crazy. Yeah, but the origin of Victoria's Secret is a man that was too embarrassed to buy his wife Laundry in a mall, so, you know, dogs are man's best friend. Chelsea, are you scrolling the real real right now? I am, and as I've mentioned, the app is the superior way to shop at the real real. I know. I now have the app thanks to you, but if you could stop scrolling, we happen to have an ad for the real real right now. Perhaps you'd like to tell our listeners what your latest obsessions are. I have several product shoes that I'm keeping my eyes on that I'm playing the long game with in the hopes that the price drops to a place that becomes more manageable for me. Okay. Okay. I also recently had a couple hundred dollars in store credit for referring someone to selling at the real real, and I had to spend it within like a set time period or it disappeared. So I ended up buying the stupidest pair of Balenciaga shoes I've ever seen. Go on. They are silver sequin pumps, but they are puffy. They're like mini-mouse shoes, like they extend far off the foot, like they're deliberately ridiculous. Well, I think they would be a good addition for the upcoming every outfit TV. I hope so. That was my thinking, but I also just like panic bought something because I knew that my time was running out, but anyway, what have you been buying? I bought a few Jill Sandor pieces, one being a knee-length leather skirt, because leather skirts are a big trend this fall. I will say I do think that a knee-length leather skirt is always a big for fall. It's like saying flowers for spring groundbreaking? Yes, exactly. Well, Chelsea, as they say, no one does resale like the real real. They drop over 10,000 new arrivals every day from brands like Duor, Hermes, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany and Co Cartier, and so many more at up to 90% off retail. And with their rigorous authentication process and team of luxury experts, it's resale you can trust. The real real is the most trusted name and authenticated luxury resale with over 10,000 new arrivals daily. No one does resale like the real real. And now get $25 off your first purchase when you go to the real real.com/outfit. That's the real real.com/outfit to get your $25 off. Start shopping now at the real real.com/outfit. They also like did their own version of the Tom Brown weiner dog bags with those Victoria secret pink dogs. And I also saw they did a fringed beaded mini skirt that had what looked to be a weiner dog on it that reminded me of the like Machu Blossy Chanel like Poodle fringed beaded bag. There was definitely some nods to high fashion in this show, which is fine because Victoria secret isn't really competing with those brands. No, but it is for people who are aware of those things even through osmosis. It's a dog whistle. It's a dog whistle. That's why it's a dog. I love how neither of us did research for this and I'm not going to. Someone please just DM us. But we talked about this last year. We went into the reasons why the Victoria secret fashion show was canceled and went away for many years. But I do love that they've now brought it back and it is just it is a new version of the Victoria secret fashion show. And the new version is just the best versions of all the old iterations of the Victoria secret fashion show, like they're literally beyond the Victoria secret pink section. There was literally a section because I rewatched it on YouTube and they have they named each section. Did you know that it was going by the seasons, Chelle? We started with spring awakening. Oh, right. The cherry blossoms. How could I forget? And also garbage is I'm only happy when it rains needle drum. I think one of the standout looks in that section was a knock, eyes first look where she just looked like a rose, which made me think like is Adam Selman still dating Daniel Rosemary? Because both of them are out here making bitches look like flowers. I don't know, but it's a good theory. But again, another nod to high fashion within the show for sure. But where I was going earlier and I just got distracted naming all the different sections was after spring awakening was literally a section called vintage Victoria, which that was the section with all the 90s, which very much reminded me of like the Stephanie C more mid 90s era of Victoria secret, which I also thought was quite strong. You know what? To me, I wish more of the looks gave that. I think the best look was the one that Alex Kinsani had, which was like a black corset with these gold feather like long wings. I think I have a wing problem with this show because I just want the wings to look like wings and all my favorite looks are the ones where wings look like actual angel wings. It's kind of like, I don't know if I brought this up the last time we discussed Victoria secret, but like you know when you go to Disneyland now and no one just wears normal mouse ears. It's like mouse ears, but they look like frozen mouse ears, but they look like cupcakes. I just want some goddamn mouse ears, some Mickey ears, and that's why I feel about this. Like I don't want wings that look like cherry blossoms or wings that look like tinsel. I just want wings that look like a goddamn angel. The wings that look like tinsel or not even look made out of very large tinsel was upsetting to see. I don't know, this is just like my my niche gripe. And I also, I don't know if I need the color palette to be this wide like I understand that it's reflective of what they sell in the stores, and I do think it's cool that there are pieces on the runway that you can actually buy because there was a period there where it was a lot less of that. Well, that's when they went crazy with making the wings look like other things. They got a little high on their own supply with that. Yeah, but I do generally like when the Victoria Secret fashion show has a holiday color scheme, you know, red, black, white, gold, silver. That's what I want. They tried to do too much. And again, this was an improvement of last year, but to do all of the seasons, I guess, minus summer, but to do spring, autumn, winter, vintage Victoria and what was called the pink halftime show is a lot. Where was fall? Fall was before winter. I will say when it comes to Victoria Secret in lingerie, it is hard to distinguish. A fall laundry look versus a winter laundry look because it's just women in bras and garters right. The thing I also like about the old Victoria Secret fashion shows from the 90s as opposed to the ones in the modern era is that they didn't have body chains then. You know what I mean? So it wasn't like everyone out here in these body chains. I don't think that body chains have actually like improved anything. I think this goes back to what you were saying about how Victoria Secret, because this fashion show has existed for so long, they had to keep iterating on the wings, and they had to keep iterating on decorative elements, one of which being the body chains. Yeah, I'm trying to think of other good looks. Oh, Kylie Jenner. Well, I was gonna say the other thing about this Victoria Secret fashion show is the return of the fantasy bra, which I'm like, "Oh, was it not there last year? I do not recall. Why did we get rid of the fantasy bra?" I don't know. Something to do with the Me Too movement, I'm gonna guess. I'm gonna guess that Jacob and Co was like, "We cannot be associated with you anymore." Were they always doing it, though? I don't know. I don't know if they were, because I remember like, when you would get the holiday Victoria Secret catalog in the 90s, the fantasy bra would always be like on the back page, and it would be like, first it was one million, and that was crazy. Then at a point, I think it became like two or three million. Now, of course, because the wealthy have just gotten wealthier, it is $55 million. So, of course, they pick someone, maybe the only influencer/model who could afford the fantasy bra, and that would be Kylie Jenner, totally. I did see commentary where it's like, "I'm sure Kendall is so pissed off that her sister walked in the Victoria Secret fashion show, and she didn't." I'm like, "I doubt it. Kendall doesn't give two shits." Obviously, something like that does speak to our dystopian times, but as a look, again, I think it was one of the most classically 90s, Victoria Secret, so I just like appreciated it on its aesthetic merits. Well, her wings did look like wings. Yeah, and she got real wings, exactly. Imagine if they had given her some diamond wings or something. Too heavy. Too expensive. They've done it before! Tell, don't think that they didn't try to prototype that. That pushed it into a hundred million. They were like, ugh. Can we get into the musical guests? Because I think they were all really perfect this year because they all align with the brand so closely. If Victoria Secret was a person, it would be Tate McCray. Right. And that song that she does, I think you know what this is. That is the most Victoria Secret Saudi music. I bet they just loop that in the store all day long. Making the stallion make sense the most surprising thing of seeing Megan the Stallion at the Victoria Secret fashion show is I would have assumed she had performed already. Megan the Stallion's song body, like it could have been commissioned for the Victoria Secret fashion show. Same with Kat's eye doing their pinky-up song during the pink segment. The pink halftime show, which they were perfect for, then there was a country singer who was singing during the, I think just after the spring awakening section. Oh yeah, I forgot about her. Who I looked up and I can't remember her name, I'm sorry. Okay, I have another niche grievance besides the body chains. Go on. It's the fact that in the case of Tate McCray and Megan the Stallion's performance looks, their garters weren't elasticized. So when they moved, they just kind of floated off the body. I just like, can you not be elastic? Like I'm confused. You're saying, wait, that the garters don't have elastic, you're not talking about the stay up. I'm saying that the garters were not elasticized. Like, when Madonna was doing all that shit with a blind ambition toy, like the garters moved with her. Right, right. I'm just more curious, like, why? This is not a grievance, but I do just want to discuss with you the fact that not one, but two models walk the runway six weeks postpartum. Oh my God. Yes. This would be Elsa Hosk and Barbara Palvin, who are truly built differently. This is actually the most unrealistic beauty standard that Victoria Secret is setting. I mean, putting those mommy milkers to work. It also seems apparent that like Ashley Graham and precious Lee and Paloma are like the only people that will be hired for this show. I think there is maybe one other girl, one other plus girl whose name I wasn't familiar with, who is gorgeous, but it seems like for the past, I don't know, decade plus, those have been like the plus size supermodels and we aren't getting anymore. There's like a finite number of them. Right. Right. Right. But anyway, a fun evening was had on YouTube because that was the whole thing is one of the multitude of reasons of why the Victoria secret fashion show went off air was that there was declining viewership and the CEO was unbelievably problematic, but I don't think it aired on a network. It was just strictly live streamed on YouTube. It used to air on some network, but how do we watch it when we were kids? No, no on CBS, but yeah, but they stopped airing it because of declining viewership. Right. Right. Anyway, we'll be watching. Yeah, it is a really impressive production. The fact that they are doing that live is insane, coordinating the models, coordinating the performers, getting the appropriate Nicole Kidman reaction shot to the Nicole Kidman song. That is right. She was there. That was the most surprising celebrity appearance that and of course was fun to see Chris Jenner and in Timmy in the audience reacting to Kylie's big moment. This was a very busy weekend in Los Angeles because Sunday you had the Victoria secret fashion show. And then Saturday you had the six annual Academy Museum Gala. Seems like it gets bigger every year. I mean, we're addicted to having many Met Gala events anywhere we can get them. And we deserve this. It is becoming kind of the West Coast version. I wouldn't dare say at the level of the Met Gala, but it seems to attract an increasing number of celebrities and an increasing amount of fashion. Yeah. And it's sort of like eclipsed the Lack Magala, which was kind of our biggest one before that, right? Right. So Taylor Swift came, she performed on the red carpet she wore Dior by Jonathan Anderson. Never looked better. Never. This is by far the best she's ever looked. It was honestly inspiring to see because they put her in this sparkling blue Cinderella type gown, but just executed perfectly and also better than average hair. Oftentimes she goes rogue with the hair and it makes the whole thing not feel particularly cohesive. Right. But with this, she was like, I'm Cinderella, I'm old Hollywood, I'm doing it right. And she came correct. We should say like pretty much any award show, Gala, red carpet event. There was a lot of old Hollywood drag. This was probably the most successful execution of that. Yeah. And it's the perfect amount of fashion for her. She does not need to be pushing boundaries with her looks. She shouldn't be speaking of wearing a lot of fashion. What did we think of Kim Kardashian in archival, Belenciaga, styled by La Roche? La Roche had a hand in a lot of looks that evening. I think La Roche has a very campy idea of who Kim is, which is centered around the idea that in a way she is America's first lady. And I'm seeing this reflected in his styling choices and this one really epitomizes that. Because yes, she's wearing like a very classical white strapless gown with this big taffeta bow at the back in this big train and a hairstyle that's very like Truman Capote swan vibes. I was gonna say now that you're saying that, yeah, I guess it is giving a kind of Camelot era, Jackie O, although not in the hair. The hair is a little more old Hollywood actress. You're saying that actually makes a lot of sense because I'm like, what is he doing with her? Is this what we need from Kim? Because on the other side, I don't think we need Kim to look more avant-garde or minimalist wouldn't be right either. So it's like, yeah, I'm not sure what to do with her style in this current era. Yeah, I think she hit the ceiling with avant-garde and this is such a departure from what she wore to the Academy Gala last year, which was the Glen Martin's Margella nude gown with a face covering, right? Which did feel like an extension of Kanye's styling work for her because of the mask. But this is like taking her back to like pre pre Kanye. It's feeling very girly, very stereotypical in that era, that Kardashian episode. Like the moments before Kanye went to her Beverly Hills house and threw out half of her closet. Yeah, it's interesting. I also wonder why he's only putting her in vintage. We have not yet seen him style her in anything that is new. Yeah, it seems, and this is not true of his other work that we'll get into of his other styling work at the Academy Gala, but it seems with Kim, the looks that we've seen, are just very obvious, right? It's like you're going to Asia to see Lewis Hamilton's F1 race while put you in a Mandarin collar. Babes will wear a Mandarin collar in any time zone, but not at this event. This event is like, oh, okay, it's a, you know, a Hollywood Gala for the Academy Museum. Let's put you in a gown like your, you know, Audrey Hepburn going to the Academy Awards in the 1950s. I get that for Kim, having a stylist who has the ability to source the best vintage is kind of what it's all about because she has access to, I would say, most designers, not all, but most. Yeah, it's an interesting styling dilemma of personality and someone who has truly worn everything at this point like to talk about a different car genner, I think Kendall Jenner and Valentino. like she has sort of found her lane of what works for her. This was gorgeous. And the right amount of whimsy for Kendall, because it was like a mismatched polka dot gown. Kendall typically looks good in very simple classic things, but I really loved this. And it also embodies that sort of '60s glamour. And it's truly a gown that will never look bad, ever. Yes, it's interesting who decided to wear gowns and who decided to be a little more avant-garde. I was surprised to see Hunter Schaefer in a very unproud look. Well, we've touched upon this many times, but their celebrity customs do not necessarily embody the ideals of the brand. I thought she looked great. Being Hunter Schaefer would be amazing, because you could wear all the kooky weird shit that no one else can pull off. And then you could also wear like very simple classical gowns like this and not look boring. Like this would look boring on most people, I think. Right. Another person who will never miss a chance to wear a full-ass ball gown is Demi Moore, who was in custom standing-ground couture, styled as always by Brad Goreski. So classically beautiful. I love this guy, Michael Stewart, who designs standing-ground. He's doing some Charles James Ass sorcery with this gown. And it is a big, poofy ball gown, and Demi Moore is so, so petite. Yet she is not swallowed by the gown, which is surprising. She looked beautiful. Also, I can't believe that Chanel dressed John Waters. This is like the craziest revelation of the night. John Waters in a classic tuxedo designed by Chanel was, yes, very surprising. Which like we've seen him in a classic tuxedo before. It does happen, but it's been a while since I've seen him like not in Come to Garçon, not in Walter van Beer in Donk. It was actually refreshing to see him in something like this. And just like very cool signaling on Chanel's part. I think Montau Blasier, whoever the PR person, celebrity, relationships, whatever you want to call it. I think who they've decided to dress from like Io a debris, to John Waters, to Sarah Pigeon, to Cola Skola. Like Chanel had the strongest looks. I don't even know where to start. Cola Skola, that actually took my breath away, because we're used to seeing coal in clothes that are kooky. Fabulous, but kooky. This was like the most traditional glamorous, simple, again mid-century kind of look. This was also giving swan. I think coal could be a Truman Capone swan, like in another life. Absolutely. Sarah Pigeon though, I think she was actually the coolest dressed person there. Because like the combination of the messy hair, the fact that she wore a little red sequin Chanel mini dress, a short dress when everyone else is wearing gowns. You can just like imagine her like ripping sigs on the Barbara Streisand bridge and being the coolest girl there. She was giving cool for sure. I continued to be confused of why she did a Balenciaga ad and is never in Balenciaga, but perhaps that's for the best. I'm back to talk about What Not. (upbeat music) I also really loved Jody Turner-Smith in Mughler. Also styled by Law Roach. His best look of the night, in my opinion. It was like a lilac and brown zebra print ensemble, complete with gloves and hat. Yeah, it's Mughler, but the hat is very Philip Tracy. It covers one eye, it's very sculptural. It's sort of like a tower it goes straight up. Yeah, I don't know if he actually made that or if they just kind of copied the look. Could not find any information about that online, but it certainly looked amazing. Either way, it's major. It looked way better on her than it did on the model in the show, like I question why they put it on a white model to begin with. On Jody Turner-Smith, it kind of feels, it's like occupies some territory between Grace Jones and Dr. Seuss, but in a good way. Complimentary. It's a lot of look, a lot of fashion, not a classical gown to skirt suit, but to me that she was the best dressed of the night. John Waters, best male dressed. Jody Turner-Smith, best female dressed. Okay, Law Roach also styled Tracy Ellis Ross, which I was like, what happened with Carla Welch? That was surprising when I saw that as well. She is wearing Blenciaga, which is surprising. Well, it looks very good on her and it's addressed that Carla Welch would have put her in also. Like I feel like the look for her that they created together is so specific that now even when I look at Vogue runway, I'm like, that's a Tracy Ellis Ross. And this Blenciaga gown could only be worn by Tracy Ellis Ross. Yes, it is a one-shoulder multi-tiered beaded. It seems like it's not even peach colored. It's a shade of orange, like a Sherberty orange color, tiered beaded fringe. Either her or Sarah Paulson would wear this dress. She also looked amazing, but I hope this is just like a random one-off thing with Law because Carla Welch got a cold or something. I hope that their working relationship is not over 'cause that would make me really sad. Tiana Taylor wore Scaparelli, divisive look, I would say. Yeah, it's one of those looks that looks gorgeous on her, but I can't imagine it looking good on any other human woman. For those who did not see the look, it's, she was wearing a sky blue molded corset with this sort of V-shaped bodice, which can we retire that for a little bit? I think it worked on the whole, but again, only because it's Tiana Taylor. This would be like a nightmare on anyone else. Yeah, also in Scaparelli, Indy Navarat, always insane to see an indie actress suddenly have access to A-list designers. It goes against the natural order of things. Well, I mean, she was in a breakout film obsession. She was the obsessed girl, but she is having a moment, she's gonna be doing an award season run. I just thought that this was, she's young, she's in her early 20s, that this was a lot of fashion for her. I think something more in the Kendall silhouette would have worked better on her. Yeah, it was like, I couldn't figure out if this was giving like old Hollywood or like body horror because it was very boldess and surreal in a way. Although maybe it looks totally normal in person in less like, substancey. She's learning, it's her first go around on the red carpet. So to move on from the Academy Gala, we've had some big news in the world of fashion. Well, some fashion outstings, let's say. Yes, which I feel like I've made this point before, but I do see the fashion community moving in the direction of the film industry just in the way that we talk about it. Like, there are all of these fan castings of which designer should go to which fashion house, this demand by the larger conglomerates for instantaneous results. And then when those don't happen, you have this never-ending musical chairs of designers going in and out of these houses. Well, in the case of Sean McGurr at Alexander McQueen, it was time we tried that, it didn't work. Don't know who is going to get this job next, but I think if this brand is going to continue, it has to have some edge to it. Or else like, what's the point? We can't continue to be afraid of the edge. We have to like jump off the cliff into the abyss. Or else this brand has no purpose. except making ugly sneakers, and pretty traditional evening gowns. Yeah, they do need to figure out what it's gonna be. I didn't see a lot of people being like, "Just shut it down," and it's like, "Curing owns it." Like, that's just not going to happen. They could just shut it down. Alexander McQueen didn't want it to continue after his death. That is true, but a billion dollar corporation owns it now, so that is just not going to happen. But it's funny what people's memory of McQueen is, which is the man himself, but it did have a whole legacy of these past 15 years of the like skull scarfs, and the like, what were those bags that had the like knuckle? We really don't need those back. But I'm seeing that like, that is the divide. As people remembered the man himself, and his incredible fashion and how transgressive it was, and that's what I think people want back. But also just like, make a nice little blazer. Because he did that at his peak when he was also doing those really creative, crazy shows of stuff that's like mostly like, unsellable. You know, it's not impossible. Hey, they could just get fecal matter in there, and it could be 1997 again. Yes, a lot of people have pointed to those two designers. Delara as well. I don't know. It's a really tall order to go in and fix McQueen, because it's very clear that if you cannot give instantaneous results, they are going to kick you out. But then also, which is why they won't pick either of those designers. It'll be like someone with a big fashion track record that maybe we're not familiar with. Or this is what I don't understand with the constant musical chairs. There is a in-house design team design studio that I'm sure has been there for many, many years. Like, give them a shot. Like, why do we have to keep installing creative directors? It's clearly not working for a lot of these places. Well, they did promote Sarah Burton. And that came to its natural conclusion. Of course. Anyway, Veronica Leoni is also out at Calvin Klein. Hate to see a lesbian out of a job. Hate to see a woman designer lose a prominent design position. But this never came together for me. And surely there has to be some living, breathing person in this world that knows what to do with this brand. Or are the corporate higher-ups so fucked that it'll never happen? Well, kind of like McQueen, Calvin Klein has the same issue, which is like, what is Calvin Klein today? Because when I think about it, it's one of the few remaining fashion brands who follows a very '90s early 2000s model, which is they have a thriving licensing model, but then also they have high fashion ready to wear. But no one ever buys the high fashion ready to wear. And I'm starting to get to a point where it's like, should they even bother continuing with this? Because like, if they can't get the Olsen twins to do it, if they can't get Phoebe Philo to do it, Michael Ryder, Simone Belade have signed contracts too recently. Honestly, at this point, just give it to Ek House Lada for shits and giggles. Oh! Let's see, maybe they should come down to earth a little bit more instead of continuing to do these like very expensive collections that like no one ever ends up buying or wearing. That was going to be my pitch is that I actually do think they need to go down market a little bit. And by down market, I was thinking more on the like Tory birch price point. Yeah, let's like do something in between like the cheap Calvin Klein shirts that you buy in like a three pack and like a $7,000 code. Like let's let's do something in the middle. And also with Ek House Lada, like you know there's no way that those like CK1 and those CKB ads were not a huge formative influence for them. Right. I feel like it's time for a completely new perspective on this brand. And we had that with Raf, but maybe that was just a little too kooky and frankly like too expensive to continue doing. And we've seen it possible. I mean gap was able to turn around. Coach was able to turn around. Free consulting advice Calvin Klein. Let's take this. Let's take the price point down a little bit. I feel like they should be trying to create a situation where like fashion people and regular people are both clamoring to buy the jeans. Right. I would think that would be the number one goal and the fragrances. It is fascinating how Calvin Klein and Gap were bested in the past 25 years by other denim companies. Like that is what they were known for. I feel like Gap has been able to get back on track a little bit better. But Gap is also like not as fancy as Calvin. Like Calvin should be at the forefront of design. The forefront of American design for sure. And fusing that with commerce. They got the perfumes. They got the underwear ads. I mean they seem to be thriving with the underwear ads. Anyway, best of luck to these fashion houses. I'm back to talk about one of our favorite sponsors, Lola Blankets. Chelsea and I have long spoken of our love for our Lola Blankets. They are our favorite blankets to do some couch or bed rotting with. But they also make wonderful gifts. As I've gotten older, it's only gotten trickier to get gifts for my friends. They have everything except a Lola Blanket. Until now. That's right, I've given Lola Blankets to a few friends and family members as gifts and I still get texts about how much they love them. That's probably why Lola is the world's number one blanket crafted with ultra soft luxury faux fur and a signature four-way stretch. My blanket, the large Lola original sky blue, has become a favorite of Morty who is once again teething. Which means that blanket is covered in drool. Thankfully, the Lola Blanket is machine washable, double-hemmed and built to last for years, no shedding, no pilling, even after multiple washes. And I can vouch for that. And just in time for cozy season, they've launched their new fall collection, the westward collection. Cozy up in their most covetable palette yet with new, a thumbnail colors and western inspired prints. Plus, they dropped fall colors for their weighted impact collection. For a limited time, our listeners can get 40% off, select Lola Blanket products with code outfit at checkout. Just head to LolaBlankets.com and use code outfit. After you purchase the ask where you heard about them, please support our show and let them know we sent you. Wrap yourself in luxury with Lola Blankets. Okay, now it is time to pivot away from fashion. And towards a bunch of TV shows, they're really celebrate the Femzel lifestyle in all of its complicated glory. Yeah, the three shows we're about to get into. It's a, it's a real Femzel corner. And we want to start with the latest adaptation of Carrie, which was created by Mike Flanagan, written by Mike Flanagan, who has written and directed a bunch of horror movies that I've never seen. Have you seen any of his movies? I have not. I did just watch the trailer. The next thing he's doing is the next sequel reboot, whatever we're calling these these days. The next iteration of Exorcist, Exorcist martyrs, which just looks like seven, but with the exorcist, which I'm down with. Yeah, if seven had starred Scarlett Johansson, this is what that movie looks like. In a gender swap version of seven, where Brad Pitt is Scarlett Johansson. Yeah, I saw the trailer and I can't wait to see that movie, although after watching Carrie, I may have lost some faith. And as I just learned this morning, they're giving another season to Carrie. Yes, guys, this is not merely a limited series. This is a show that will continue forever, possibly. Okay, we've discussed this before about these prequel sequels. And I've said it once and all it bears repeating. I don't need to know how Han Solo got the Millennium Falcon. Likewise, I don't need to know that Carrie's bully had a shitty home life. I don't care. Okay, but if that's her story, we need to give her a shitier home life than she actually had. She didn't even have a shitty home life. So her dad's bad with money. It's not like he doesn't love her. Her mom's played by the wonderful Heather Graham and seems very supportive. There is no reason for Carrie's oppressor to be the monster that she is. Here's another thing. I also don't need Carrie to be X-Men. X-Men is X-Men. I need Carrie to be Carrie. You're telling me that there are other gifted children? Save that shit for Professor X. I know. And guys, this is not a spoiler because if you watch the first episode of Carrie, someone immediately lets you know that at prom, it wasn't just Carrie. There were others. And I was like, what do you fucking mean there were others? See, when I was watching the pilot, I was like, great diversion, great diversion. I see what we're doing here. We all, of course, if you're watching this version of Carrie, you've at the very least seen Brian DiPolma's adaptation. Perhaps you saw that wasn't there a sequel in the early 2000s? The rage Carrie. there we go there was the Kimberly Pierce reboot yes with Chloe Grace Moritz I believe correct yes she was in that one and look let's start with a few things that this adaptation of Carrie got right which yes it's very eye-roly to update Carrie in the age of social media but it is fair you can tell Mike Flanagan's age because it's an Instagram Finsta and not a TikTok but whatever but I thought it was well done updating Carrie for today's times of like giving her this kind of ultra religious which comes from the source material but these like libertarian survivalist energy like that something we haven't seen is true to life and that I thought was a good update Carrie being utterly freaked out by active school shooter drills I was like that smart totally I do like the way that they updated the mother for sure I don't need them to stick like so closely to the source material but there were other ways in which they departed from the source material that were so deeply offensive to me that I became enraged and I developed telekinesis Lauren I didn't know I had telekinesis you actually didn't finish the series because you blew your flat screen television off oh my house was leveled I don't know what this says about my age and where I am in life I felt the most drawn to Carrie's mother's plight like I really didn't care about her trying to get off the night shift and her attempt to being a late in life content creator which yeah can you imagine like the Piper Lori character with the ring light that is quite literally what happens in this adaptation of Carrie and I watched the couple episodes and I was like okay I can watch this like de-grassified version of Carrie but when I was deep in the show when I was like halfway through the show I realized that they weren't actually adapting Carrie they were adapting mean girls there is a burn book in this series there's a burn Instagram there's a fucking Janice Ian in this series and Carrie's chief oppressor is more like Regina George than the original character yeah this is the aforementioned bully with the city home life which I have seen she has a name Chris Chris Hargason it is Chris which I've seen people try to connect that maybe because spoiler alert she dies in a car that perhaps she is Christine from Stephen King's other book that she becomes a possessed car maybe we meet her in season two oh god yeah to me like at its core Carrie is a story about adolescent cruelty and what happens when an innocent kind person is picked off of the pack in that way and it's also about child abuse you know this is a character that is abused at home in addition to the abuse she faces at school I think cruelty is central to this story this was not what this show was this was the lightest fluffiest this bitch was barely even bullied the tampon scene like wasn't even scary I remember the first time I saw Carrie and I first experienced the tampon scene deeply traumatic one of the scariest moments on film I just assumed going into this that like Carrie's character was going to be cyber bullied but she wasn't it was a burn book situation where the whole school was cyber bullied by Regina George it seems that Mike Flanagan's objective and how he wanted to make a different from the original Carrie is when you watch Brian De Palma's adaptation of Carrie I will be fully honest I have not seen the Kimberly Pierce reboot remake remake it was good you definitely like Carrie is an anti hero in this series Carrie is a weird villain where it's the amount of violence at the end is almost not justified totally well we should also say I think what makes the tampon scene lose its grit in this adaptation is because of the choice they make where Carrie has been home schooled her entire life and she is forced to go to school for the first time I actually liked that I like that but it but those around her bullying her should probably understand like this girl doesn't understand the internet she doesn't understand active shooter drills like she doesn't know what her period is what was also inherently less scary because she wasn't naked that's a good point I forgot about that like let's take everything that was actually scary about Carrie that's a crazy thing about this series it's not horror it's not quite like the L series which is the Amazon prequel to legally blonde I think it is for a young adult audience totally now can we get to the other departure which is the ex-manification not only the ex-manification but if I'm rose glass the writer director of love lies bleeding I'd be fucking pissed totally because the back half of this series you are unsure if Carrie has an imaginary friend like if my is as Janice Ian real or imaginary don't know still couldn't really tell you for those who haven't watched the series at this point you're not gonna watch the series even though it's getting a second season but Carrie doesn't die she lives you'll probably could fear that out knowing that there's a second season but it has literally the antique of love lies bleeding there these two quasi lesbians are driving into the desert together after murdering a bunch of people can we also talk about the fact that the prom wasn't scary well I mean prom in general is scary but yes I do know what you're referring to the way that they filmed the prom scene because it was inner cut with testimonials about the prom scene from the future made it lose all shock value all sort of the scary part about the Carrie prom sequence is the claustrophobia that is established because they are quite literally trapped in that gym and you as the viewer are trapped in the gym with them I just think that the way that he chose to present this made it so much less scary than it actually is and we should care about these people that are dying right like these are characters we followed for the whole series right if you're going to do a series that has eight episodes and you're following these characters for eight hours you should care about these people especially when they're getting murdered also they're all nice no one is mean except Chris Hargason that is why I compared the show to digressy because it's like going to a school like that where some mild bad things happen but everyone is just lovely at their core well they all have their own shit going on the teachers are great except for what's his face fun to see Matthew Lillard play the principle that's like an Easter egg for us for horror fans yeah yeah for a lot of the shows we're gonna talk about and especially Carrie I think a detriment is that it was eight hours long now I agree that Carrie the film doesn't probably capture like there's more to dive into than just one hour and a half movie or two hour movie but eight hours too long which is why I think this X-Men deep state underground telekinesis bounty hunters storyline comes in who are the women doing the interview girl I don't know I guess that's gonna be answered in season two I don't know if I have a season two in me you know what I will say though the acting was great the Carrie was great very different than a sissy-spasic certainly but she did a good job the mom did a good job the rest of the Chris Hargason actually maybe she was the best she was so hateable as the mean girl and I think one of the most satisfying parts of watching Carrie was watching whenever something bad happened to her something bad happened to Carrie or Chris right whether it's not getting into the college she wants again she didn't have like a particularly harrowing home life but it was nice to see her get her come up and here and there mostly as a result of her own you know evil behavior right and her burnbook finster anyway yeah I don't know if I have the strength to pick up with season two I don't know maybe we'll just like switch off episodes or something it might be funnier to tell each other what happens I also want to touch upon monster the Lizzie board in stories that what it's called it is it's the fourth season of monster started with Jeffrey Dahmer then we got the That was the best one. The Menendez one? Yeah. - The armor was pretty good. Here's my thing. Okay, last season was Edgene, which I did not watch, even though it was Charlie Hunum. I was unable to finish last season, but I did get halfway through. Charlie Hunum has been sucked up into the Ryan Murphy Kia asylum. That makes sense. I'm happy to see him on screen again. Rebecca Hall, I don't know how she got sucked into this. - I know. - The crazy thing about the Lizzie Borden monster is like if this isn't for me, who is it for? - What is fascinating about each season of monster? And seemingly whatever is going on in this current season of American Horror Story is that Ryan Murphy is becoming less and less interested in true crime, or like the true part of the true crime? - Yes, like this is complete fanfic. It's not great what I have to Google, did Eileen Warnow's visit Lizzie Borden's house? And the answer is like no she didn't, and in fact there is no documented evidence that she even cared about Lizzie Borden at all. - We are saying this because for those who haven't watched this series and don't, by the way, tell, spoke about this series in such a way that she was like just find the Sarah Paulson scene. So I like, I watched a couple of episodes and then I just found a scene pack of all of Sarah Paulson who plays Eileen Warnow's and is an overlapping storyline of Eileen Warnow's going on her killing rampage but also becoming increasingly obsessed with Lizzie Borden which culminates in her visiting the Lizzie Borden house which didn't open until 1996 and Eileen Warnow's was arrested 1991. So there's no way she could have visited the house. And then also is greeted into heaven, question mark? After she is, okay, I didn't even watch that part. Oh yeah, after she dies by lethal injection, Lizzie Borden and her lesbian love her, greet her and they dance to that song from love lies bleeding. I'm like, is Rose Glass losing her mind watching all of these shows? - Wait, what song do they dance to? It's a small town boy. Look, Sarah Paulson's performance is campy but it's not inaccurate. It's campy because she's in a Ryan Murphy series and her dialogue is all about how she's obsessed with Lizzie Borden and then it's just her like fucking her butch girlfriend in Lizzie Borden's house. - Or like, yeah, I mean her, or her dialogue is murdering John's mean like, I told you not to come in my eyes. Okay, but also like, have you watched either of those Eileen Morno's documentaries 'cause they're both great and she is kind of like that? - No, she definitely is. I've seen and I've seen people do side-by-side clips. Yeah, Sarah Paulson is like in her own John Waters film that is running parallel. - Yes, that's so true. But the Lizzie Borden part is trying to be some combination of like the favorite and the handmaiden and also the gilded age. - And also the gilded age but it also kind of has structurally owes a lot to the hours because it's kind of like going through time with these different fucking dikes and it's like Eileen Morno's and Lizzie Borden who there's no proof that she was a lesbian by the way. But I think I speak for both of us when I say we're fine with this fanfic. - Fine with this fanfic. Also the other historical figure in this is the Countess Elizabeth Bathory, my favorite Hungarian serial killer who Isabella Parr is also playing in that upcoming vampire movie. - Right, right, right. - Who Delphine Sirig's character and Daughters of Darkness was based on. - Which despite Ryan Murphy getting to, I would say like experimental levels of playing with narrative. I will say there are some artistic flourishes in this Lizzie Borden series. Like the first time you hear the story of that Hungarian queen. - I think she was some kind of noble woman Countess. Anyway, the first telling of her life which is said to Cherry Bomb. - That was incredible. And so our girl Vicki Creeps plays Lizzie Borden's maid. And she also plays Elizabeth Bathory in these flashback sequences. But they've given her like pretty much an exact Alexander McQueen makeover from whatever that collection was. I don't know, but her glam very McQueen. No eyebrows, severe bob, severe bangs at the very least red, long black pieces of hair hanging by the sides of her face. Very cool. There's definitely things to keep you going. Compared to Carrie, Carrie was a slog to watch. - Totally, and I think with the Lizzie Borden show, the stuff that they were trying to copy was like cooler to begin with. - But again, I ask. And obviously this is a format that works with streaming shows, but do we need eight hours dedicated to this? - That's the central problem. This could be the hours, you know? - Yeah, give me, come on, let's Ryan Murphy. You have been working until for 30 years. Let's bring the TV movie back, come on. - Yeah, hey, all streaming services, asking us to commit eight hours, week after week, we have children, we have jobs. Most of these episodes are filler, let's be honest. And also it's like there should be some real emotional stakes in the Lizzie Borden series. Like this should feel like heavenly creatures, you know? This should feel like the Charlize version of monster. But it doesn't, it's empty and hollow. It's written by a man, by the way, like Carrie. And I think this man's idea of like how to do a lesbian movie is just to show like lots of close-ups of women eating juicy fruit. - I see what he's doing there. - You know what I mean? It's like the eroticism of fruit eating. - The eroticism of stone fruit, specifically stone fruits. - We have also completely buried the lead quite literally that Ella Beatty, who is the youngest daughter of Warren Beatty and Annette Benning, Ryan Murphy loves Annepo, baby. Billy Lord also makes an appearance in this series. Ella Beatty, who looks like a yassified version of Annette Benning, her mother. She plays Lizzie Borden, she is great. Again, performances, great. Nothing bad to say. Vicky Crapes, great. Rebecca Hall, great, Trolley Hunham, there. Always happy to see him. It like should work, but it doesn't. It has a crazy budget. And I will give this to Ryan Murphy, one of the few creators at this level who keeps production in Los Angeles. I truly think like one third of shows on television are Ryan Murphy's and they are blessedly shot in Los Angeles. - Wait, so that wasn't shot on location in Hungary? - I don't think so. It's just like Ryan Murphy, he always fucking gets my ass. In this year, what happened was he made love story, which I loved. And then because I loved love story, I was then also forced to watch the shards and this monster series. - You have not even gone to American Horror Story season 13. I press play, I got 20 minutes in, and I was like, this feels like self-harm. I mostly consume American Horror Story through Evan Ross Katz posts. Yes, as we all should. Again, speaking of an experimental narrative structure, there seems to be a scene where Evan Peters in that weird Gomez Adams drag his character from the Lady Gaga season is talking to himself as Dahmer and Dahmer is on Grindr. - Yeah, someone told me about Dahmer being on Grindr. - Again, we should say in Ryan Murphy's fanfic version. - Whatever, I don't care, all's fair is coming back. I'll watch that. - Yeah, yeah, see, then he'll get me again. - Year after year, it's like a rat that pushes a lever. And like nine times out of 10, it just gets shocked, but one of those times it gets food, that's me. - Oh, I thought it was the rat experiment where it just keeps getting fed and just getting fed and fed her and fed her and doesn't know when to stop. That's how I feel with Ryan Murphy's series. - Okay, but back to Eileen Wernos briefly. Please God, no. - I have a very dark lesbian algorithm. - Yes. - Obviously, tell me more. - And I've been seeing a lot of like, thank you Eileen Wernos type posts come up in my feed or like people selling vintage slip dresses with photos of Eileen Wernos on them. And like, I just want to point out that like, while the first guy that she murdered, like, - How did it come in? - How did it come in? Was Rapist had a history of this kind of behavior? The other six guys that she killed, like, most likely did not deserve to die. Just putting that out there. - You're like, give her one. Can we hold space for like both realities? You're saying we shouldn't yass queen Eileen Wernos? Chelsea, are you not here for women's rights and their wrongs? - I'm here for some of their wrongs, but not murdering innocent people. Look, she said that she killed six men in self-defense over the course of like, two years. I wasn't there. I don't know what happened. Thanks by the way for clearing up the record. You're like, guys, I was 10. No, I was six. I wasn't there. I can't say for sure. I was not there. But like she was a sex worker that had like probably had extreme PTSD like from the rape not to mention like the horrific child abuse that she endured. And probably having sex with random guys was triggering and not good for her mental health. So she murdered them. I don't think she should have gotten the death penalty. I think she is not guilty by reason of insanity. That is true. And that is where Sarah Paulson succeeds is the recreation of those final interviews she did in prison when she was on death row. Right. Again, I didn't get to those. Go on YouTube. Someone has put a scene pack together of all of Sarah Paulson in American horror story. And all this I lean stuff just reminded me of the tragedy of Christa Pike, the woman that Tennessee just tried and failed to execute twice. I'm so fascinated by this case because surviving two lethal injections like that gives witchcraft. I think it less feels like witchcraft when you learn that because of doctor's hippoose, they cannot participate in executions for those fuck out who don't live in America. Yeah, doctors cannot administer lethal injections. So I guess it's just prison guards who are not trained to find veins. Right. But like they still did poison her. She was in a coma for like five days. And she woke up and she can talk and walk. And I have searched for another more recent update. But there is nothing since then. I mean, I don't believe in the death penalty full stop, but like, I'm sorry, that should be off the table now. You had your chance. You fucked up. And again, like I lean were notes, this is a fucked up situation where yes, this person committed like a horrific murder as a teenager with her abusive boyfriend, but like had the most abusive fucked up depraved childhood where a lot of the blame does lie on our very rapic culture that probably led her to become a psychopath and commit this crime. She did request because of her PTSD that she did not want to be executed by a man and instead wanted to be executed by an all-female firing squad. Yeah, that sounds better to me also. Again, here at the every outfit podcast, we do not stand with the death penalty here in California. There's been a stay on the death penalty. So those who on death row will not be murdered. But you mentioned in Christopher Pike, all I can think of is like, what is this story doing in the imagination of Ryan Murphy? I know. But again, if we're going to make something out of this, please let it be a movie. Please let it be written by a woman or bring back David Fincher's mind hunters. Which was an incredible series about the initial FBI agents that created the serial killer on database, but how to create a profile of serial killers. And then there was, I don't know if you have a watch mine, Hunter's Chelsea. I didn't. There was a great seeding starting in season one. And if you're a serial killer freak, which sadly I am, you realize that there's a parallel storyline going on of a guy murdering women and it would have become the BTK killer. So you would imagine as the seasons went on, they would eventually find him. Well, I heard that show was good. The show was incredible. And now I have nothing to watch. So maybe I'll watch that. Well, yeah, because we both just finished Furious, which came out in July, was not aware of that. It came out a long time ago. I totally missed this show. I loved this show. Speaking of shows made for you, yes. It's like, for those who are not familiar with this show, it was created by New Girl creator Liz Merryweather. It is loosely based on a 1987 film called Black Widow, which has long been my point of like stop remaking famous shit like Carrie, remake movies that like kind of worked, had a good premise, didn't find its audience, and remake that for a new audience. So the original film Black Widow, the plot of that film was US Justice Department data analyst Alexandra Barnes, gross suspicious of the desk by respiratory failure of several seemingly healthy, wealthy men due to a rare condition. Each married within months to younger wives, comparing photographs, Alexandra determines the wives are the same woman wearing different hair colors, and styling to look older as a disguise. Okay, I need to watch that movie ASAP, but Furious is a very loose adaptation of that. There are no wives involved in this. No, it's more for those who haven't seen the show, Killing Eve, and a very good like double special episode of Law Norder SVU. It's about an FBI agent played by Emmy Rossum tracking a female serial killer. All of these shows were tough watches for different reasons. Furious is a very good show, it's a tough watch because it is a very dark show. Yes, the female serial killers you quickly learn is a victim of child sex trafficking, and she is trying to avenge the men that took advantage of her when she was younger. She's trying to stop this process from happening to people she cares about to which, as I said throughout every episode, let her kill. I don't see the problem. I know. Can we use like less FBI resources trying to catch this woman, please? And if you've ever watched a TV show of the last 15 years, Emmy Rossum starts to feel closer to this serial killer than not. Look, there are so many films and television shows that address the topic of sexual assault and the failure of the justice system when it comes to these sorts of crimes. They are rarely done this well. And this show really paints a picture of all these very systemic failings, and it also gives us like very layered and complex depictions of both the victims and the law enforcement. And in this show, sometimes the law enforcement is as fucked up as the victims because they all have like PTSD from investigating sex crimes. Like I love the character of Nora who is Emmy Rossum's boss, who is like the comic relief of the show, but also she's an alcoholic because her job is so fucking dark, which feels deeply realistic to me. And the actor that plays Catherine, Lola, Petacru, very good. Irish. Also, Jake Lacey as Emmy Rossum's Nightmare X. Wonderful. I love him and everything. Because of your facial blindness with male actors, I wasn't sure if you could clock where you've seen him before. No, I love his face. And he is so good at playing an asshole. Well, his whole thing early in his career was playing like the good boyfriend, and so I think he's actively sought out playing assholes, which he does equally well. He was so great. And so was the guy that played Danny who was Emmy Rossum's love interest, who has the most perfectly weathered expressive face of the actor, Scoot McNairy. You've definitely seen him and other things before. Wonderful performance. Yes, although in the pilot episode, his accent is a little all over the place. I had to look up where Scoot McNairy grew up, which is Texas. He's lived in Texas almost his entire life. Takes him a few episodes to lock into that old school New York accent. But his character had like a deep sadness about him underneath it all. Maybe not sadness is the wrong word. Whatever Morgan Freeman had in seven. Bringing it back to seven. You know, awareness, I guess. This is a deeply depressing show, and I will say when it started, and it was more about vigilante justice. I was I found it more interesting. There is a certain part in the series, also eight episodes, where good triumphs over evil in a very predictable way, and I was like, I'm out. And then there's a turn in literally the last five minutes where I'm like, and I'm back in. Yeah, it's really, really gripping. Like it took me a couple episodes to get super into it. But by the time I was like, episode five, I was like addicted. I was on the edge of my seat. Are they going to catch her? Are they not going to catch her? What's happening with Jake Lacey? Is Emmy Rossum ever going to take a shower? And she does. She does. Spoiler alert. She takes a shower. And this show is coming back for a second season, which I'm very happy that it is not a limited series. That I cannot wait for. A reason to live. Yeah, I don't have too much to say about furious because it is so good. And if you haven't watched it, I think you should. But basically, the overall vibe is like all men are bastards, but like varying degrees of being bastards, except Scoot McNairy. It's just varying degrees of being a bastard. and the women that have to operate within the patriarchal system, whether it's family systems, the justice system. - Oh, speaking of the patriarchal systems, can we talk about what's his face's SNL monologue? - Are you referring to Shane Gillis' monologue? Specifically the line, I recently started going to the gym and when did all women start dressing like whores? - Yes, it's a very like bottom of the rape culture pyramid sort of thing. - Right. It's just a bad joke. - Oh, for sure. You can get away with saying anything if you're funny. - By bad, I mean, just the premise is tired. Like anyone who is talented enough can make anything funny. And I do think Shane Gillis is funny. He has a show on Netflix called Tires, which is basically the complete opposite of every show we've ever talked about, just a 30-minute workplace comedy. (laughs) But the premise of the joke was like, but women have been dressing whatever way you're talking about like women have been dressing in that kind of gym clothes for 20 years. - Yes and no. I would say that like women at the gym are putting more effort into their appearance than ever. When I go into the gym, I look like that scene in the family stone where Rachel McAdams wears a dinosaur junior t-shirt. But I am working out next to Adriana Lima, Elsa Hosq women in like coordinated allos sets with full faces of makeup. Was this always the case? - No. - So I think it's like he's speaking to something, not of course the women look like horse aspect, but he's speaking to something that is true. - Right, but I think what you're talking about and what I'm trying to get at is, it's just not a clever observation. - No, and he's the wrong person to make the observation. Like I can imagine what the Nikki Glazer version of this joke would be. - Yeah. - But you have to know like who you are. And I think obviously a lot of these straight white male comedians, like they think that no joke is off limits to them. They can't take a long hard look at themselves and think like, am I the right person to tell this story? - To be fair, which why am I being fair to Shane Gillas? - But the premise of the joke was, I think a juxtaposition of his appearance and how diametrically opposed it is to these women who are very hot and are dressing. But this is what I don't understand. Hot women have always dressed hot for the gym. - They're dressing even hotter now though because there weren't as many options in terms of clothing for the gym. - Right. - Previously. So now it's not just like, oh I'm in like a good black Lulu lemon set. It's like, oh I'm in like a baby blue Alos set and I have matching shoes and I have a matching bag and like it's like a whole look. - Right. I think what we're picking apart, which is an avenue to go down that feels modern is how much effort people are putting into getting dressed for the gym and he's certainly not. He's not the right person to be doing that joke. But here's my issue with the reaction to that joke and even us talking about it is it's giving it more attention. For sure. And I don't know if you know Shane Gillis's story but he was the guy who was cast when Bowen Yang was cast and didn't even make it to the first show because of comments he had made on his podcast came out and then he was dropped from the SNL cast. - What comments did he make? - Oh my God, I don't remember. I could look them up if he would like. No judgment, I'm sure that we've said something that would bar us from being on SNL. - For sure, but that initial controversy, like we definitely do talk about people dressing like horrors but like in a more affectionate way. - And hopefully a more nuanced way. It's funny, I now can't even find what he initially said because it's all been taken over by the women are horrors. - Comments, let's see, a video clip is from 2019. I think this is the year he was cast. A video clip of Shane Gillis using an anti-Asian racial slur resurface on Twitter Thursday afternoon. Just hours after he was announced as one of the three new SNL cast members a further look at his publicly posted work reveals a long history of denigrating women, Muslims and the LGBT community among other groups. - Yikes. - But my point is that that controversy brought him to a new audience I had never previously heard of him. And that's part of his story is like by being cast in SNL never even getting to the cast made him more famous. So famous that he got on this trajectory where now he can host this was his third time hosting. So I guess let's not give him more attention. - Although, do you know he has the top Patreon account? - Really? - Oh, what is it called? - He does it with a guy named Matt. - It's Shane and Matt's. - Oh, that's the Shane in question? - Yes. - I've always wondered. - Yeah, Matt and Shane's secret podcast 140,000 paid members. - Damn. - Can you imagine? - So maybe he should like save his horror jokes for his podcast. - I'm sure he tested it out on the podcast. - Well, I guess this concludes our FEMSEL news segment. - We spent the last three minutes talking about a man and shitting on him, yeah, I think of no better way to end this segment. - We will be back next week to talk about other stuff. But if you are wondering about what we thought of the movie of the year, you can see everything. We will be dropping a VIP episode about that in the coming days because Lauren still has not seen it. - Sorry guys, I'm literally going to go from this recording to go see the documentary and then we can talk about it in all of its spoilery glory. - Exactly. Thank you guys for listening as always. - Bye. - Bye. (upbeat music)

They highlight several standout pieces, including a deconstructed skirt and a daring slashed slip dress, while critiquing the impracticality and inauthenticity of some designs.
