NFL Cover Zero: Week 5 recaps and Remembering Mike Ditka

The week featured a mix of high-stakes victories and glaring missteps across the NFL. The 49ers' dominant win over the Seahawks, despite injuries, underscored their resilience and strength, while the Giants-Commanders tie sparked widespread criticism for poor game management, clock decisions, and missed plays. Jalen Hurts delivered a standout performance, regaining confidence and showing growth after a previous slump. Conversely, the Cowboys’ defensive collapse and the Titans’ abysmal record—highlighted by a notorious blocked kick and offensive chaos—revealed systemic issues. The Eagles’ coaching error in a kickoff situation with no timeouts led to a critical loss, emphasizing a lack of situational awareness. Christian Watson stood out with a series of spectacular catches and six touchdowns, becoming a major fantasy and fan favorite. A historic trend emerged in the NFC North, where all four teams finished with winning records for the third straight year—an unprecedented achievement in the league. This shift highlights the division’s dominance and signals a competitive realignment, though the Vikings’ struggles and Titans’ collapse point to persistent challenges. The season’s narrative reflects a mix of redemption, mismanagement, and evolving team dynamics, with several key players and coaches under scrutiny. The discussion also touches on broader issues like the need for change in officiating, coaching accountability, and the absurdity of ties in standings, with a humorous suggestion to adopt the metric system for tie placement. Ultimately, the week affirmed the NFC North’s strength while exposing vulnerabilities in other divisions, setting the stage for a pivotal season.
This is an I heart podcast guaranteed human NFL cover zero with Matt Jones and Drew Franklin as a production of the NFL and I heart podcasts. Welcome. It is the week five wrap up here on NFL cover zero. A little Monday afternoon, we're wrapping up some NFL games Matt Jones, Drew Franklin and Billy R sports guys. Um, we are in we are basic Kentucky. So we've been pretty like overwhelmed with Kentucky beating Lane Kiffin, but nevertheless, that doesn't mean there weren't NFL games yesterday was great. I was able to lay on my couch, just turn on NFL and red zone, uh, kind of drift in and out of sleep. So if there are plays I missed, that's okay. But, uh, enjoy the action. A lot of, um, you know, the afternoon, the late afternoon, we got to stop only having three games because if there, if there's only two of them are boring, then you end up, we need more games in the late afternoon, but otherwise a good day. Yeah, usually the afternoon is when I'll be like, all right, I've been on this couch since 9 a.m. I should stand up and maybe see if there's something to do, but I will say yesterday, even though we're only three, I got pretty locked in, uh, to the Seahawks game. That was a, that was a really good game. But otherwise I was disappointed that I didn't have options. It's just too much chargers, too much cardinals that that's the problem with that light as in will be a lot of writers. We were lucky we got Seahawks 49ers. That was a great game. I just, I don't need to see any more of the chargers. Don't get me started on the team. Daniel looks weren't weirder every single week. And there were some about him wearing the brown and all that. He looked like he was from a 70s, uh, you know, drama. And then I don't know what, I don't know what Jim Harbour was wearing that hat had the lot of colors. Was it pride or something? Why was he wearing it? It's one of the themes, right? I think it was pride. Well, I don't know for sure. It wasn't pride. I don't know what he was wearing. But I'm not starting with the chargers game. I can't, I can't do. I want to start with the giants in the commanders. All right. Didn't have you go in there. That was fun. Oh, because it was awful. Yeah. No, no, no. The team should be ashamed of themselves. First of all, I hate ties. I don't like them. I don't understand why I don't understand why it's 10 minutes. I've been on this train for a while. Why isn't it 15? We got to buy them a little more time. The problem is the team that gets it second is having to fight the clock. Now, you know, now part of it was that in at this point, both teams got the ball twice. But just in general, I don't think I like the 10 minutes. I know I understand you don't want to play forever, but they could at least do 15. But also it was a parade of corbels. Yeah. Nobody wanted it. You know, you started with the, the giants moved down and then what's his face misses the kick? Right. And then the commanders go three and out. And then the giants, all they have to do. Well, they didn't have to do anything. They could have just kicked it. Like, there was no reason for them to keep running the ball, right? Or they're like the 20th, 24th. Yeah. I guess. I mean, how much closer they want to gotta be. I guess they just missed one. Maybe they're guard up a little bit, but you definitely can't turn the ball over. He missed like a 48 yarder. And I think they were set up for a 38 yarder. Feels like he would have made it. Maybe not. But, you know, then scatter boo. He took off all his gloves and his padding on his arms and hands. And I thought that's when you needed it most when it was raining. I didn't know that he took all of them off. Yeah. So it was just, you know, he had better hands when he fumbled that ball. What was his reasoning for taking them off? I'm not sure. You know, I feel like that glove technology really helps. Yeah. Well, what's the point of wearing it? If you're not going to wear it during the pouring rain. Exactly. That seems like the one time you would wear it. Well, he gave up the game. Your boy. And then he looked sad. Which I understand. He was like wet. So then you think, well, I can't get worse than that. And then the commanders, like everyone should be fired. Everyone, like everyone that lives in Washington should be fired. Everyone on the hill. Here's what I need to, what were they trying to do? I mean, I'm being dead serious. When they, when they snapped that ball with 15 seconds left, what was their goal? Maybe a few more yards. Center the ball in the middle of the field. And did no one think we don't have a timeout? No one. That's egregious. It's one of, it's maybe the worst professional clock error. I've ever seen college kids out there in the first time doing that. I think it's the worst one because the thing was, like, they were four seconds away from snapping it. Like, they weren't close. It wasn't like he snapped it and they're like, oh, that's close. Let's see if it was. No, it wasn't close. They don't even think he got, I don't even think they got lined up yet. And Dan Quinn shattered his headset. He was so mad on the sidewalk. But it mean it was his fault. It was, but he was, he didn't need to call a play. That was a gift wrap win after you were given the fumble to have new life. And all you got to do is not that. Well, you could do anything. I mean, I don't know, like I'd rather them have just punted it. Or miss a field goal buff if the arts, you can at least say you tried. You did nothing or throw an incomplete pass. Oh, yeah. I'm just not sure what Jayden Dan, I'm not sure what Dan Quinn, Jayden Daniels thought would be a good result. Had they thrown a completed pass, that wouldn't have worked. If he gets tackled, that does it work. If he throws it to the sideline, now you're not even centered. They were centered. Yeah, they ran away. What are they trying to do? I don't know. And there was 50, 55 seconds before they snapped that ball the first time and then waddled around until they snapped with about 12 seconds left. And they also seem like no one was in a hurry. Did they wait? Thanks, there's a second overtime, maybe there's a second half. It just seemed like no one was even in a hurry. Like if you watch it, the wide receivers were like, there's one guy on the commanders acting like he knows what's going on. And then the Giants player just stepped on the ball. Did you see that? And if you're the commanders, I mean, you're probably not a playoff team. But you a win like that. You need if you want to believe in yourself. Now you're at the bottom of that division. That's one right there. Just kick the ball. And the Giants were somebody like they had won. I've never seen a team happier to be taught. Well, they should have been because they, you know, scatter boo. Like he gets saved. Just a bizarre game. And the NFC East is the new NFC sound. And like in terms of being just like it was an awful week for the NFC East. The Cowboys lost to the bucks. And just a pitiful performance. And it was in prime time for everybody to see. It was a terrible to watch. Terrible. Well, thank you. Jalen Daniels, though, got a win. So happy. He actually didn't look awful. No, he looked like there's something there. I don't know if he's in an NFL quarterback. But he, he looked like he had a place, at least as a backup or something in the league. Yeah. Who had James Winston's New York Giants leading that division where Jalen herds. Jack Prescott, Jalen Daniels, the other quarterbacks. That was a great James game, though. What was he was like? Through the ball 54 times. It was like 36 of 54. 326 yards, three touchdowns, zero interceptions, but he did fumble. And the thing that's funny about James, his misses are not even close. But then he gets 30, he gets 36 completions. But when he misses, he misses by like 30 feet. I saw in the week leading up to the game. He admitted that he lost his confidence. And even when he came back to take over that first game, he didn't feel like himself. And then he said, I see that people are liking the James Winston experience. And he got his confidence back. I want to be like, that experience is almost more of a comedy. We enjoy watching, but whenever you want to tell yourself. That is true. No of us were like, wow, James Winston's back. Look out. It's more like, I have to watch TV when James Winston's on it because anything could happen. He's 10 yards down the field and he is pumped. That was great. That was great. But, you know, people are laughing at him about that. But it got bit. He did. He jumped. He was past the first downmarker when he pumped. It kind of worked though. I got to give him credit. I don't think that was that bad. Yeah. I loved it in Tampa. It's ups and downs with him. No doubt. So they get that time where literally, honestly, they should disband the house of representatives. Everyone has nothing to do with the game. That's just my general view. Separate of the game. So, then you go to just to the Cowboys for a second. Is it just the case if they don't have CDLAM then they stink? Because he got hurt early in that game. I mean, they should still be better than that. I mean, CD, they could have left him at home and they should beat the box even though he's been so good. Their defense is just awful. They were at home. Yeah. That's obviously a good offense. And they were supposed to fix that defense in the off season. And it does not seem to be any better. You watched the game. I'm sure more intently than I did. Yeah. Bucky Irving seems to be the steel.
of that draft class, they got him in like the third or fourth round. He looked really good. What year was that? Uh, three years ago. I think I've had him on my fantasy team every year. So I feel like he's been in the league for 12 years. Is he not been in the league? No, three or four years is about how he's been in the league. So he's good. He's good. But this is this is much more about the cowboys. You know, they talked about the defensive coordinator youngest in the league, taken over and Jerry's probably talking about him on his radio show right now. Yeah. He he's not been great. But I mean, to be fair, the guys before him weren't great either. I mean, that's been the issue. They just can't seem to get an defense there. No big their biggest priority this past off season after last year. All all the points they gave up. They don't seem to have done any better. I know there's one high scoring game, but that's good. That's their big problem. But he's still, I mean, they always scored 16 points. Yeah, that's tough. And CDLAM has been great this year. I think he you could have made an argument. He should have been one of the MVP candidate. It's coming into the game and then when he goes out looks like a different team. And then you go to the Eagles. I mean, if it wasn't for the giants and commanders, the Eagles situation would have been the most egregious. I had a unique game watch experience for this. I bet the Eagles money line. I watched them kick that fill goal. And it was kind of right as we were getting the afternoon slate. I turned it off two hours. I mean, I had no idea. And I went to it was like second half of the 1 p.m. games. I went to my draft Kings assuming that money would be there. I had no idea that happened. So then I'm like, well, did they wave off the Eagles. Fill goal. I saw it go in. I had no clue that they gave up that kick return. But so ever here again, eight seconds. I don't know. I turn it off. I don't understand that these new kickoff rules have been in effect for what two years maybe three longer. I'd say a three. I think how do these coaches still not understand? So you had the game. What was the game a couple weeks ago? Was it the chiefs where the Raiders made the mistake the opposite way? Who was it that made the mistake where they should have kicked it to them and they kicked it out of the end zone? There was a game. I got to think. I don't have that on top of it. There was a game where there were like 20 seconds left. And they should have kicked it out of the end to them and run the clock and instead, but here's the thing. In that game, the team they were playing had timeouts. That was the key. They had timeouts. So you wanted them to run some clock because they had timeouts. In this game, the Jaguars had no timeouts. So you want to kick it out of the end zone because even if they complete a pass, they will not be able to stop the clock. Getting out of bounds is the only hope. Dallas and Baltimore. Dallas and ball. That was exactly what it was. Dallas and Baltimore and Dallas won, right? Or did that. That was in Spain too. I remember that now Raven scored on the last second field goal. They had one timeout. So it wasn't as clear cut as this. But they had one timeout. And so you kick it to them because they have that timeout, you wanted to run the clock. In this case, with no timeout, kick it out of the end zone. So I think here's what I think happened. I think the Jaguar or the Eagles coach, Nick Seriani, he saw what happened before wasn't smart enough to differentiate the situations and then did and made the opposite decision and it worked backfire the other way. That was so crazy because he was not going to take it for a touchdown. There's still a lot of guys. You could have let him go 10 more yards. And I know in the moment your brains not watching the clock, you're trying to make a tackle. But if that guy waits half a second to make the tackle, it's game over. I mean, there were defenders in front of him. You're exactly right. It was over it. And the guy comes up from behind shoestrings and like, made a play. He's like, that dude doesn't exactly, you're going home a winner. It's a great point, great point. And the holy head even making move. He just shot straight up the gut and all the way down to and Cam little. If not in Dallas, he's probably the best. Yeah, he is. He's one of the two best kickers. That was a great celebration. Well, that was also Jude Bellingham's celebration from England. And so being in London, it was the perfect time to make it out. He would have been the go to that game. You know, he missed the extra point that allowed the Eagles to take the lead. So for him to get that redemption. But I mean, I don't think his extra point, we heard more about long snapping in that game than we've heard in the game in a long time because so their long snapper got hurt. When did he get hurt? Because it sounded like he was never in the game. Was that just a case of, because they were in England, they didn't bring another one. I'm not sure about when he was out. No, I mean, I think that actually might be true. Because I believe he got scratched before the game. So if the game had been in Jacksonville, probably you would have just a practice squad player. We're on up your practice squad long snapper. But they were probably like, well, he can't get to England in time. Need a fan in the stands to come down and long snap for it. And poor guy. I mean, the dude they had, how's he the backup? Every snappy had we even the good, even the ones that weren't, even the snap on the final kick was bad. Yeah, oh, that was way high. I thought the the holder was going to go. He should go to the problem. The holder. Whoever that guy was. I just, for me, it's amazing what Jacksonville did that. The Eagles, what a joke. They had 20 rushing yards. I mean, how are you this bad? I did that fake rant when that bit we did a week ago where I'm like, he should be fired. Part of that was just leaning over the bit. But no, this is inexcusable to have that talent. And well, so he's eight. So who's going to be the first coach to get fired? I guess the contenders are him. Is Harbaugh a contender? Yeah. A lot of the coaches are new this year. We had a lot of changes. Is your coach, I guess, how did it go? I think if you all had lost, he might have gotten fired because it was a Thursday night. They would have had 10 days or whatever. The expectation, expectations between the bucks and the Eagles are not even in the same conversation. The Eagles are supposed to be a contender. Yeah. How much time does it Super Bowl win by you with Nick Sireoni? So this is two years after it. I think generally speaking, I think the answer would be two years. And so you shouldn't fire him until next year. But I think he is oddly so egregious that I think you have to find. I mean, they were some people who were talking about ready to rip the band ass with him last year. Eagles fans have been disappointed with him since he got the ring. It feels like NFL will give coaches a longer time. Like, you know, in hockey, they will fire coaches for having a bad week. No, they will. I mean, last year, I think the Philadelphia Flyers went to playoffs for like the first time in eight years where this feel good story. And they've started out the season like, oh, and six. And they're probably going to fire their coach. And like last year, I think he might have been naming an HL coach of the year. And I think they're going to fire. And then I think last year, the Las Vegas team was like in the playoffs, seven games before the playoffs. They just fired the coach. I had no guy. They almost won. And then they fired him at the end of the year. He's cut the road. Don't think about that for me. Yeah. The Las Vegas nights, there were eight games before the playoffs. They fired their coach, even though they were going to be in the playoffs. Eight games for the playoffs. Hard to sky. He takes them to the finals. Lose his four games to two. And they fire him at the end of the year. Not good enough. Didn't Mike Brown win coach of the year? It was fired like six months later, five years ago. Yeah. But in football, they, you're right. You win. And you do get a long, long leash. Well, when they, when the Eagles did get their Super Bowl, remember, there's the Jalen Hertz, like Jordan ad, everybody's Jalen Hertz, this Jalen Hertz, that Eagles might be the new, whatever. This is sad to see them start the season this way. I know Barclay's heard, but 20 rushing yards, come on. Yeah. Well, it's, I don't think AJ Brown was the problem. I don't think they tried to make him a little bit of escape goat in his locker room issue. So I don't think AJ Brown was holding that hole. So who's winning this division? Giants and James Winston, because they're in the league. I feel like, no, they won't. I still think it's probably going to be the Cowboys and the Cowboys and the Eagles are both two and three. Is that right? Yeah. And I, this is the worst part about ties. I hate to look at it. The standings. It's third column. Get out of here. Let's just either just give them a win or a loss. I just need a clean standings here to help me with the man. It's another thing that happens in hockey. I don't know whether the ties the middle one or the last one. And I never know. Well, I think it's on the end for us. Yeah. And then overseas. It's in the middle. So that's why I think that's right. Confused wind draw lose and soccer. So it's it's wind loss tie here in the United States. Don't you think ties should be in the middle? I don't think it should be in the game. Like, okay, but let's say you have a tie. It should be in the middle because a tie is in the middle of a wind and a loss like the wind draw loss. If anything, to keep it consistent with what it already exists, this is like the metric system. What? Like the metric system. No, I know what the metric system is. Like how we adopted that and nobody else has really saying we didn't even adopt the metric system. No, he said we went rogue. We're just system in place. The metric system is what everyone else. Yeah, flip it and reverse it. That's what Billy said. Why are we going against what's already out there? Everybody else does. I agree with you. So we should we think we should put it in the middle. We should adopt the metric system is what I'm saying for ties. Put it in the middle. Okay, but Todd, you're making a connection between ties in the metric system. I don't believe his base didn't in new numbers. It's based in arrogance and us doing whatever we agree with. I'm with them. We should have the metric system in life. Do you think we should? Do you think it's too late to change? Oh, way too late. Yeah. I still have to google the conversion rate. But but the metric system actually makes sense. Like how many feet are in a model?
No, no, I mean, that's like three thousand. No, what is it? You should know this everyone should know this we learned it 5,182 close 5,280. I knew I had the aids in the ones in the 5,280 stupidest number Yes, no, I mean, why was that the number? Well, I mean the bar got to yes, and it all skits perfectly It is but but but it also just showcases who decided that 12 inches to a foot. Why not just make it 10 exactly or five 12 and then how many yards are in a mile? Why don't we even have yards? What does a yard do you use the yard every except outside of football not outside? No, and then you guys are really good job about that because he's right yards Don't exist outside of foot. I'm not one time in my life. Why don't football just make it feet Actually golf golf to but those two well true both. Why is is a football field not 300 feet? I don't know. You got to have 30 feet. You have to have 30 feet for maybe too many hash marks Guess that could be a paint saving on pain. Yeah, it's a pain. So we're cheap. That's what it is We're cheap with our paint and look at us now and then Fair enough fair and high in Celsius is the same way fair and I also dumb It's all about what's the boiling point. Do you all know couldn't tell you? It looks pretty hungry. No, do none of you know the boiling point just when the bubbles start coming up But you know what that is fair and high. No, we live in America. Why are we don't need you know and that's not one sixty so it's two hundred and twelve Celsius is a hundred right which makes a lot more sense. Yeah, but what's interesting is their freezing point is zero Our freezing point is 32 Why It doesn't make any sense why like you could have just said 30 you made it up or we could have just said zero I'm saying if you are gonna make it up you can still do even you're literally making it up you can do whatever you want Yeah, that's what I say like When they came up, let's just say they came up with our temperature We could have just made zero. We could have been like I we're gonna start with this and for some reason they're like Let's just start with 32 or even if you wanted to do yours make it five You know just let's keep things even yeah because the it's two yards to to go ten feet. This is very metaphysical But a foot is a foot just cuz we said it Right like a foot could be 18 inches an inch could be a deer like we you could have picked anything All right, let's go. We're seeing it. We mentioned we mentioned the Cowboys and then we mentioned the the Jaguars games So let's go to Packers bears just a brutal be down Tyler begent was the Tyson begent was just awful would you would which if they I think they have one more week without Caleb Would you start kingdom you paid a lot of money for Baygent to be your backup? I'd probably just exactly he looked at the other game had a bad game I mean green Bay needed to wake up eventually. This was just their wake up and you were the other team I wouldn't I mean get Caleb back in a hurry, but I don't think I'd go to Keenam over Baygent He was really bad though. I was he was really bad wasn't just He made some holes. Yeah, he was awful They brought Keenam in at the end and Keenam drove him now the field which will only make that a bigger discussion in Chicago Who do you have this week did just survive and then say we're three and two Promise both of our losses are to division teams and we play the Falk at the Falcons But see that's a tough game because that's a game you need to win And you got to make sure you don't screw it up and be yourself well panics got right into that one So there's some talking points in that game Christian Watson though quickly becoming maybe one of the best receivers in the league You know catch was crazy. That was great crazy. He's got six touchdowns this season So he's I think that's second in the league and and that catch was one of the best of the day Do you all like Christian Watson's good example the guys that have done the interviews with us? I did are you like My brain was like yeah, we know the kind of thing. Yeah, when you I I've got a female friend of mine that doesn't only think about football, but she's really cares about her fantasy team like and she makes me Helper with the draft and then gets mad at me as if like I'm like I'm doing your favor And she's just angry and I had her pick Christian Watson Oh nice, and then she'll send me before the week should be like who should I start and I always say start Christian wise and she won't What he had to yesterday It's I totally like an 18 league so you can be loaded in the stars and Then she wrote me yesterday and said you didn't tell me to start Christian Watson. I was like I was tired of telling you You just kept ignoring me Two TV day good so I do room for him and I actually picked him For her because of our interview. What did you all make of the Jersey Scream Baywear? I didn't like him. I didn't know what that color was my color. Will didn't have that color Yeah, it was almost like a Roger Biff doesn't have that it was almost like people that have glaucoma's version of There it was like smokers long it's a color but it was kind of yeah, it was what I imagine Smoker breath looks like I heard the announcer explain it is. It's to their stock like the Green Bay no leg on the team It's a nod to like the old I don't know if it's the paper was printed on but if that was the explanation It's a nod to like oh, yeah, it's like paper that's been out of the sun. Yeah, is that what it was? It's what it was or smokers. Oh either one just a nod and I think they should retire that I thought it was ugly And what are we going to do for our uniforms this year on nod to the old contract? What nod to stocks it's set out in the sun Well, they're one and I'm so I didn't wait maybe they'll bring it back mingles 31 dolphins 24. I'm gonna make a Confession here. I don't remember this game. Oh, this was I know my multiview I know this on television. Well, then you give us the wrap up Burrow look good four touchdown passes I think the stories that is a little closer than anyone's expected when they're being like a touchdown game I don't think there's any point we thought the dolphins would win But they showed some life Kind of like the chiefs game against the the doll. Yeah, it felt like you always kind of knew the bingles were gonna win But the dolphins hung around yeah, so that's partially why I had my multiview I'm watching it but at the same time It's like well the bingles are gonna win this but you know burrow having a good game when earlier in the week Higgins and Chase We're both questionable. I'd say would be the top headline there. Yeah, Jemar played and played well. Yeah in that game Burrow through for four touchdowns. So good to get back on track It was good to see burrow be good again. That Jemar chase catch was great I mean, but you mentioned the Watson case catch his catch and then the trademark ride catch. Oh, yeah, he's so good So there were like three kind of highlight catches today that That will probably be on the end of the year list So that was and and I guess now the Texans beat the Titans 26 to 3 so I Think the dolphins can say they're now not the worst thing. Oh, no, no People are now calling the Titans the worst team in decades Like if you laughed at the jets you're gonna laugh even harder at the Titans. We're that bad. We've won three home or two home games in three years There's three home games in two years. Excuse me before this Yeah, but I think they're extra bad. No, they are. Did you see the clip of the left tackle blocking no one? It's hilarious He just got on my Twitter and scroll down because I retweeted it pre-late last night It is one of the best football bloopers you'll ever see, but they're just so bad. I mean their numbers If you were to just look at like analytics the last team and whatever category you want to pick you could build a Walmart Between them and the Titans further down on that same sheet. Oh, that's it. That is great. Oh, and he just lets the guy We're on by do. Yeah, well That's not the worst plays I've ever seen. I gotta go back to that again. So who's he looking at here? Yeah, exactly We we kicked a fill goal on the opening drive at a lead. Yeah, we led kicked a fill goal on the opening drive and never did anything again That is one of the worst plays of it. Three American points. I do like the guy that posted to his name is Stone Titan Yeah, yeah, they're off the bone Titans, right? Yeah, they're off. I did I enjoyed the sign that said blink twice if you need help cam. Oh, we had the brown bags Out we're we're there. I told you all before this season started. It's happening. This is my life So they're the worst team, right? Yes, and the reason I saw this Titans fans know if you look at our draft history There's not like anyone that's done anything and when you have a top 10 pick so many years and none of them do anything for you You're never gonna be good. Yeah, it was a thing. They do this thing at the beginning of the Kentucky games where they show everyone that plays in the NFL From Kentucky, first we have a lot more than you realize we're doing well and we'll let us got the biggest Like ovation. Oh really? Which I thought was kind of strange because it's like he's only kind of in the way But I wonder on the Titans and I'd say Will's more in the league than Wendell being on a practice squad like Titans don't even but you know in soccer you have to move down I think they should be put in like the Mac relegated. Yeah relegate us to the Mac. We do not belong in the national football league Okay, well they did people are being mean to cam ward and I'm just what you really are No, baby's listen. I said People are being really hard to to cam ward and he's not been good. I'm just point to I just need people that don't watch the Titans to understand peak Tom
Brady would be called a bust in this offense. People were hard on levis, people were hard on Mollique Willis. I'm not saying, Mario's loving this. - I'm thinking Mario, I mean, he really is worked out. - Yeah, I'm not saying Mollique Willis or Willis or the answer. I'm saying those guys never had a fair chance because this is just an unbelievable. - So you have optimism. - No, we drafted, we knew in the moment when we took Carl Nell Tate at four, no one projected him to be there. And we're like, okay, let's see if this works out, not working out. - Add him to the list of draft picks that will be on other teams trying to make the roster in three years. - He's a wide receiver though. - Yes. - Like who's gonna get him in the ball? - I don't know. I wish we just show up and just point. (laughs) - First, Stanley playing. - The, we have, Robert Solid, Brian Debowl. I understand his head coaches, they got fired, but you would think two guys that were head coaches in the NFL maybe could collectively win a football game. - You would think so. - No. Chicago Bears scored more points in week one, 59, than the Tennessee Titans have scored through their first five weeks. - That's amazing. - That's amazing. - Excuse me, two in 19 in Nashville in the last 21 games. - Yeah, well. - New stadium on the way. - And you know what, next Sunday, I'll be sitting there and I'll watch every snap 'cause I can't quit 'em. I hate 'em and I can't quit 'em. - Jets 17, Brown's 12. This was an awful game. In the rain, the Sean Watson had multiple chances there at the end to bring 'em back and just couldn't. This was probably the Deshaun Watson everybody thought they were gonna see throughout the year. - And if you didn't watch Commander's Giants, this is the game where Brown's and Jets were trying to lose. There are a lot of plays. - A lot of plays. - It's like, okay, well, that's the deciding one, then they just give it right back. That's kind of what you expect when the schedule comes out and you see Brown's first Jets, but both of these teams would play a little better than the expectations, but they both looked bad. - That was a scoring rain. - Yes, not a tie. - It did not happen. - I think that didn't help either that it was just a constant day loose of rain. - I also didn't like how Aaron Glund was seductively waving his challenge flag. Did you see that? - I did. - Sleepy means seductively. - It's like he was like trying to make eye contact with me and while I was doing that, here's the video. - Oh, that is a little. - I have not making eye contact with the ref. - Or if I am the ref. - Yeah, that's interesting. - Did you have the Browns at 3 and 2? Even though they, I mean, lost this one, but still got a winning record. - No, I mean. - I mean, the Browns were almost 4-1. - Yes, it's been like better this year. I gotta know what the record's gonna end up, but they are much more competitive this year than they've been. They could easily be 3 and 2. I think it was the packers that they should have beaten, that they kind of blew it at the end. - Yeah, they finally got their interception. - Yeah. - Things were patterned. - Steelers 34, Colts 22. The Colts, where they have five field goals. - It was a lot. They just couldn't convert. Like, they actually drove the ball a lot. They just couldn't get the end zone. And then, you know, Aaron Rodgers has these moments where he looks good, but really Jalen Warren was the story. He was just a guy. He was on my fantasy team kind of helped. - Oh, you had that. It had been a big number for him. - I had Drake May and Jalen Warren. - Oh, nice. - But it was good because the rest of my team, CDLAM got hurt. You know, we, we, we, this next man opened up. - One play at a time. I was without my top four draft picks in fantasy. That was fun. If you ever get a chance to do that. Jalen Warren had like a 50 yard touchdown and 80 yard touchdown. He was all over the place. - Yeah, he was like that too, but I'm with you. He was the story. - He got 16 points in one play, which I don't think I didn't, like he, because it was an 80 yard touchdown reception. So he got the point for catching six points for the touchdown. So 15 points and an eight for the yards. - And on the other end, I thought this would be a big Jonathan Taylor game. He didn't do a whole lot. - No, no, he did not. So. - Well, the cults get the Titans next week. - Congratulations. - If you don't want me to talk more about them. - Patriots Raiders, we were ready to give up on Drake May. And then he was huge. It was great, actually, that this was so weird. See, it got played so bad the first three weeks. And then the last two weeks has been excellent. And this looked like the Drake May that people say exists. He looked like in that game. - Yeah, in the preseason where people were ranking him as a top five quarterback and MVP candidate, that's the Drake May they were talking about. Five touchdowns, the last two weeks, they've really gotten their turnovers down. The offense had a ton of yards this game. On the other side though, we got to see Mendoza for the first time came in and handed off. So they called his number late in the game. - He threw one pass and I get hit in the arm. - Yeah. - And they were like, "All right, now hold on." But I mean, he did get a nice pop when he came in. First time seeing him in the uniform. - I saw there were a lot of people there with Indiana jerseys on. It was like, "Man, you go all the way out there." I guess probably bought the tickets before the season started and we're like, "Yeah, we'll go hunting, we'll go to the game." And then you get to see him one garbage time thing. - Maybe they took a picture of him. - He gets in there briefly. - But you know, the Raiders, it was a bad, bad loss. - Yeah, try to be on interesting guy. - And Will Campbell, their lineman. - He says, "Will Campbell's like out for the year?" - I'm not sure on that. - He's the guy that just got completely burned during the Super Bowl, right? - Yeah, the LSU lineman. - Yeah, he's good though. - But he just had a little Super Bowl. Yeah, he's got the boy on. - Yeah, he's got the boy on. - Viking Saints, the Vikings stink in their fight. - I can't hold it. - Best defense in the NFL. - I took, yeah. - I bet Saints' money line just solely because I don't want to live in a world where the Vikings are five and over that roster. And they got me here. Justin Jefferson, New Orleans guy, I got to touch down. And his gritty, Collar Murray decent Aaron Jones. - It's been kind of disappointing to me this year. I thought they'd be pretty good and they're one and four. And the thing is they lose to bad, they lose these bad teams. Like they should be three and two or four and one. - And they've had some close losses. It was a week one. They were in a shootout with Detroit lose at the end. I think there's one more game they're in until the very end. Maybe they had Baltimore, you know, they won at Baltimore. - The Raiders, they lost to them at home, 35 to 27. - That's, maybe that's one I'm thinking of. But they've been right there in a couple of these games. - Yeah. - I mean, I don't know, Collar Murray, he's not good. I don't understand how they're five and 0. Like, let me look at the rest of their schedule. Like, are they gonna keep winning? I mean, they play the Colts next week. Then the Lions, the Bills, the Packers and the Four Knights. So their schedule gets harder. So we'll find out. But they can easily win next week. I mean, they could go into that game against the Lions six and 0. - And they're winning, so it's hard to describe to them. But they've scored nine points, 15 points, 20 points. Like the offense isn't doing much. And part of it's the schedule. I guess they did go to it. - But they did beat, I mean, they beat the Packers. They beat the Bears. Then Tampa, Miami, New Orleans, those teams stink. But I don't trust that offense. - But the Bears game, it was pouring rain. It was nine to three. I don't know. But they're five and 0, so. - Chalker, scoreboard. Broncos Chargers, has there ever been a quarterback fall off more than Justin ever? - Not at all. - And this was the year where I was like, you got one more chance to do something. And not only are you not taking a step forward, you've taken like five steps backward. - Harbaugh City was going to be the best quarterback of all time. - I mean, you would have thought though with Jim Harbaugh who has had successful quarterbacks. Mike Medaniel, who had successful quarterbacks. And then a guy who had been successful, this would be a positive step. And he's awful. - But I think they turned over twice late in the game. They've blamed the line for a year and a half now. At some point it's not the line. I know the line has been banged up and it's not good, but maybe also Herbert and Harbaugh and Medaniel is not getting it done just collectively either. The fact that there's a chance that they weren't going to work out, but the fact that the Chargers are 0 and 5, is I think the biggest surprise of anything that's happened this year. - They're off its line as four rookies on it right now. So I mean, I can understand some struggles. - Four rookies, wow. - Well, okay, but if you're going to have the invest in this, like allegedly top six, top seven, quarterback, you can't just play four rookies. You've got to have something else. I can't believe they have four rookies in. That is kind of crazy. - But I still don't care. He's still awful. - Yeah. - He'll have open throws and just throw it to the other team. - That's what I'm saying. The line excuse only works so long. When you're 0 and 5 and it just looks like you're bad at football. I'm sorry about your line, but it's also you. - Yeah, well, not a good-- - All those weren't great offensively here. - No. - Got the win though. - Yeah, they did just enough. Crab was all Broncos fans. Lines and Cardinals, you know, the line started out 0 and 2. Got that just beat down loss to the bills. But now, 45, 21 had Arizona. A team that at least had been kind of frisky early in the year. - The lines are unique. I think last year I said they're Super Bowl defense and they're Super Bowl offense. Their defense needs to be in college. It kind of proved out again here, but that offense is good as the bills and others are. The Lions might even have the best offense. - Great running back and receivers, the port is good. - Good, too good, tight ends, golf, brown. - This is the game when I go to roosters on Sunday. I go to roosters during the late games. They, the Cardinals are always playing and it's only on one TV usually. So I tend to just not see any of it, so I just want to say I didn't see any of it. - I looked this up because I had the feeling I just want to be sure. The Lions, number one, and points per game and several offensive categories. They score more than the bills. I would not have had, even though I think they're good. I wouldn't have expected that. It's got to be all offense for them this year. - And thirty-first. - And thirty-first. - Thirty-first. - Yeah, thirty-one again. - As wild. - They keep scoring.
49ers beat the Seahawks great game both teams. I thought played really well 49ers are the best team in the league Yes, when you consider they still have all all these injuries and they just find a way to win and they beat good teams I mean they've you know that they've beaten the Seahawks the Broncos Dolphins cardinals and Rams they've beaten their two biggest rivals who might be the second and third best team in the league And did you see I am that those were scheduled road games So the next time they play those teams they're both of them are gonna come to San Francisco in the substation. This is a huge win at the end I don't know if you are watching but it ended on a review Cooper Cup I thought had a first down and they didn't give it to him Very close. I would have given it to him just so I'm not the one deciding the game. I would have said I thought he got it I did too But for a game with that magnitude I mean that could decide who has home filled if they meet again the playoffs ending like that was nuts for the game of the day There's seven combined turnovers in the game. There were a lot of turnovers and then Well, I'm in the in zone for touchdown Mike Evans looked great showed you why he's in my almost grade you Yeah, I as I know your team won, but as a bucks fan Mike Evans looked like he was 20 something he looked incredible Yeah, he looks exactly what I thought would happen It's Sam did you think Sam d'Arnold did he get hurt? You think Have they said anything clear? He looked like he got hurt and then his couple throws after it were not the quite the same I thought he looked like he got hurt to me Now he could have re aggravated what he's been out with. I don't know. I haven't seen anything on that yet. So yeah Ravens Falcons Sunday night football Michael Pinnix Play him well. It's hard game changes Tyler Huntley who has played for the Ravens since they were in Cleveland As the backup Comes in for like a couple games every year and always does pretty well How does nobody ever sign him like do you ever wonder about like why 17? Why does just Kobe Berset get to start everywhere and Tyler Huntley always has to snoop always has to be Lamar's backup The Ravens are gay keeping them. They found the perfect backup. They can run the system just the way they want They play him just enough for no one really notices and trusts him. That's true. He gets a couple games a year I had a little anytime touchdown here. I had 200 yards ran the ball a little bit pretty good look good and then port to So I watched 95% of this game maybe a little maybe we'll call it 80 And I'm not paying. I didn't know to it was in for the there at the end and I got Someone just sent me oh no to a text. That's all it's in. I'm like my god truly to a head done something else So immediately go to Twitter and there it is that guy so he had a completion in regulation and then they put pinnocks back in And then I guess he started hurting more and so been two a day to over two uh just I would love to see you on a beach just go live man. You think that play might have ended it Well, he's just become a meme the turnovers are always a blooper has a horrible. I mean When's the last time someone was just speaking positive how good a football to is it's it's not it's like buddy you You're great the Alabama moments are great the early NFL stuff was fun to co-live your life man. If you don't have to do this sad It's kind of sad, you know, there's a bad interception. Yeah I think Michael pinnocks might be all right. I think he might be good Is that plausible you mean good at football like his injury last night good? I don't know bad. I think he's good at football Yeah, I don't know if he'll be able to stay healthy in his life, but I do think he's pretty good Um So the Ravens is around them help him so I I'm a little bit of Falcons believer when he's healthy with all the guys he has around him does Mark Andrews have to retire He had a bad game again. Yeah Is he had if these other games been bad? Well, he had the big drop in the playoffs So he's got the bad turnover. You know the Ravens fan base. I don't know if they really then he's the problem It's a problem because he's a legend And that stinks, but he has been bad Tower loop big game for me. You got It's my god loop dealer. All right So there's your wrap up. All right, a couple news notes and we'll get out of here The Arizona Cardinals agreed to trade wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr And a 2027 seventh to the Houston Texans in exchange for a 2027 second and sixth round pick Marvin Harrison Jr reunites with his Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud He was the fourth pick in the 2024 NFL draft and in 33 games with the Cardinals He had a 1500 yards and 13 TDs Found this to be a really weird story. They announced he was traded But then didn't say who it was to they were just like Marvin Harrison traded film at 11 like three days later Then they say who it is. I mean, it's almost like they were just they just decided. Yeah, we're just We stink or they may be like he stinks I've never though. I've never seen a story where they told you he was trading without telling you who for many days And then I wonder the Texans coach is the one that announced it in the press conference yesterday Oh, by the way, we got Marvin Harrison as he's walking off Why do you think they didn't say where he was going? I don't know. I know I do. I think it was panning on if they beat the Titans or not I mean if they lose to the Titans That's a season ever You know what they that may actually be true like we're if we beat the Titans and we're gonna do But then what do they do if they don't beat the Titans deals on hero? Yeah, but you've already said he's traded So you can't like I've just kidding Other team that was interested has to take him at that point So you think they had a backup option interesting maybe that would make some sense the Texans need help I don't know if he's the answer. They're wasting a good defense. Yeah, I don't know if you've seen the like I know I keep bringing them so hockey but it comes up this dude for the Troy way we're ed wings Names Dylan Larkin. He demanded a trade during the offseason. He's like this their best player like beloved demands a trade The red wings are just like no And so at first he's like well then I'm not gonna play and they're like the height Then we're not gonna get paid So he decides to play and on opening night the fans just boo the hell out of him And they're just like boo then the next guy and then he scores Yeah And it just goes to show fans just like so maybe you could have brought him back and been like well, we didn't drag you Yeah, I'm gonna forgive. I sent you brought a pocket. I wouldn't do this but your hurricanes Outscore the Titans yesterday Just wanted to let you know Congratulations. Did you see the the hurricanes posted a mean tweet? Did you see the tweet they mean Philadelphia flyers and they said the hurricanes have more wins In the month of October Then the flyers fillies and Eagles come by Oh That's only five Isn't that wild. Yeah, that's one of the meaner tweets. I've ever seen it's a deep cut if you're a Philly person It's one of those you think it's bad Then you see it like that's like oh god, this is bad. It's really bad All right, what else? Last Friday legendary bears head coach and first high-end ever inducted into the pro football hall if they might dica Passed away at the age of 86 Dica's 85 bears is arguably the greatest Defense and NFL history and other franchises only Super Bowl. He was the fifth overall pick in 1961 drafted by the bears Will rest in peace Mike Dica one of that I was trying to think probably the only person the only other person this Describes is is John Madden a great player a great coach a great broadcast How many other people like Hall of Fame level player Hall of Fame Fame level coach. I don't know if he's a Hall of Fame level broadcaster, but still very good for a long time I mean only John Madden is like that and In a ledge. I mean like the coach of my youth the, you know, I talked about this a lot on other stuff, but I was really sad and To see I mean for me You know if you were to say okay, who are the Mount Rushmore of coaches in my life? It would be like Rick Patino John Cal Perry Like dick. I mean that would be good for and then maybe Bobby Cox for back when I was a brace me Legend also there. Yeah, I know I don't I don't go back far enough to put him as places ranking coaches But when I think of just like a like a character or maybe a personality or even a look It's like Mike did get like it's like an image of Mike did get there might there's pro coaches better than him But he's like there's like a Mike dick a brand. No, yeah, there's like we talked about Halloween costumes Yeah, SNL skits. I can't think of many coaches that have that like just a look in a brand that he had any fight any embodied the city Yeah, like when you like I'm not sure how many coaches have ever embodied a city more than Mike dick and body Chicago Everything about played in Chicago coached in Chicago Kind of seemed like he was cool. There's that famous clip of when Apparently he only he didn't use credit cards even into the 2010s only carried cash Carried a roll of cash every where he went We want there's that famous clip of Chris Carter on the espn countdown going show him coach And he just pulls out a big wad A roll of dollars and they talked about how that's where he does if he goes to They would do the show in New York he would go to restaurants just pull out his big wad on the table and throw it down and pay for everybody's meal I speak to restaurants. I was thinking in late 80s 90s heck maybe you can really died. I've been
that him on the city of Chicago was, it was a time. - He had a restaurant in the steak houses and I owned him the joint. - I remember his steak house. He had a dip 'cause steak house for a long time. - I was there for New Year's Eve. - How old year was it? - I was there. - New Year's Eve. - And then part coach of arguably the most iconic team of all time. Maybe the most iconic team, like who are the most iconic teams in the history of sports? I mean, I don't know. - 85 Bears. - The USA hockey team. - Yeah, but who's on that team? I mean, like there was, like no one knows the names of those players, but like everybody knows Walter Peyton, Jim McMahon and the fridge. - Yeah. - You know, I'm trying to think, I guess I mean, like there are dynasties, like the Jordan dynasty and the magic and bird, but really those dynasties in some ways were defined by like a player. - The Jordan Bulls, the magic, bird, Russell. But the Bears, I mean, Walter Peyton was a star, but it was kind of like a collective almost aura of a group. - You know, great defense. - And he was the sort of model of that, you know? - I didn't know. My dicko was a football coach. I saw him in kicking and screaming with wolf hair. - I've heard, I've heard that I've seen that. - I've heard though that he was good in there. - He was very good. - I watched his golf video that would viral this week - Oh yeah, that's a great one. - He's a pretty good golfer too. - Yeah. - All right, who else? - All right, I got a couple more. After leading a game winning drive to get the 49ers to 5 and 0, Brock Pertie is now the favorite to win the NFL MVP according to draft Kings at plus 280. - Should be. - It's the first time all season that Josh Allen has not been the favorite. Brock Pertie has 1200 yards, 13 touchdowns and two interceptions for the 2022 seventh round pick. - I've been a skeptic, but no reason to be this year. He's been great. He has, he's earned that, and we mentioned, like, kill him in the jets a week ago. Just that whole operation looks good and healthy, look a little younger than they actually say on their IDs. I've been very impressed with the 49ers. - And you've thought you may have heard, what was it, Ryan, Lewis Redd said, something the effect of Brock Pertie's great, but basically said if Jalen Hertz had, if Jalen Hertz had been in Kyle Shanahan's system, he would have been the same thing. - You can do that a lot with different things. It's a hard game to play, but I do agree the Shanahan system in that roster is probably, a lot of guys that would do well. Maybe not as well as Pertie's doing right now, but that looks like a place a lot of people could win. - Yeah. - And finally, for the third straight season, all four NFC North teams have a winning record at the same time. No other division has accomplished this feat, even two consecutive seasons since the 2002 realignment. Minnesota's 5-0 and Green Bay Detroit and Chicago all sit at three and two. - So they, what's the stat again? All they all have winning records and that never. - At the same time, this is the third straight season, all four NFC North teams have done this. - And that's never happened. - No other division has accomplished this feat, even two consecutive seasons. - Wow, NFC North. - NFC North. - Real football, real man, that's all I got. - It's exciting for you, but also that just shows you the road you got. - No, I don't think where, this isn't our year. I've always kind of thought next year is the year. If the Bears are gonna do it, next year is the year to do it. We just need to make sure we don't take a giant leap backwards. But I never thought this was the year. This to me is the Rams Bill's year and maybe the 49ers. Like the Rams and the Bills are in a window that may close after this year. - Rams, definitely. - Rams, definitely. The 49ers, I think, still have years and maybe the Bills do too. But this is their year. I think the Bears window really opens starting next year. And then the other teams are all good too. Except the Vikings are stinkin' and are five of them. - Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I don't think this is the Titans year. - I'm not saying anything. I'm looking at $2,090 as soon as we'll get things coming up. - All right, well thank you all, Billy. Thank you very much. We will see you hopefully midweek. There's some travel issues that may make it hard to do a midweek. If we don't, we'll see you to start the next week. This is NFL Covers in. Summary:
FAQs
The game ended in a tie due to poor clock management, with the Commanders failing to make a play with only seconds left. They waited too long, wasting valuable time, and missed a chance to run the clock. This was widely criticized as one of the worst professional clock errors seen, especially since they had no timeouts and were not in a hurry.
Jalen Hurts had a strong performance with 54 completions, 326 yards, and three touchdowns, despite a turnover. His confidence returned after admitting he struggled earlier in the season, making his comeback a standout moment.
The Titans were heavily criticized for poor performance and defensive issues, including a well-documented bloopers like a left tackle blocking no one. Their analytics show they are among the worst teams in the league despite having multiple top-10 draft picks with no impact.
The Chargers struggled significantly with quarterback Justin Herbert, who showed a major fall-off. With four rookie linemen on the roster, the team was inconsistent offensively, leading to a 0-5 start, which was seen as a major surprise and regression.
The 49ers defeated the Seahawks in a tightly contested game, showcasing resilience despite injuries. The win was significant as it highlighted their ability to beat top rivals, and it marked a major step in their season, with Brock Purdy emerging as an MVP favorite.
It's the first time in three seasons that all four NFC North teams have winning records at the same time, a feat that has never happened in any other division. This underscores the dominance and competitiveness of the NFC North, highlighting a major shift in the league's landscape.
