New Street Fighter, Scott Blames Mescal For Gladiator 2 Failure - The John Campea Show

Well, greetings and salutations everybody, welcome to the best and move related show on the planter at the John Campy show coming from right here in our quaint little studio. I'm, of course, your host, John Campy, this is the show where we talk about the things that we love the most movies and movie news TV and streaming and all that good stuff. Joining me today is writer, director, producer, Mr. Robert Meyer, Bernette, Robert, how you doing today, sir? John, I think I'm going to go see Michael Man's man hunter, the final cut at the Harkins mountain grove today. They're actually playing that in theaters? Yes, sir. Oh, my goodness. I hope you have a good time. And also joining us, our technical director, Mr. Jonathan Voico, Jonathan, how you doing? John, I think I'm going to stay home and just work all day because that, like, poverty. Those are also big plans. Those are big plans. That reminds me of that. What was it called? Fresh off the boat. One of my favorite, favorite lines ever, Randall Park, of course, was in that. And he owns, he owns a restaurant. And his employee, one of his guys comes up to him and he goes, "Hey, I was wondering if I could take a vacation." And Randall Park puts his hand on his shoulder and says, "But Ralph, work is a vacation from poverty." It says, "I, man, I used to really like that show. That was a really great show. Anyway, guys, most importantly, of course, you guys are here. Thank you so much for being here, making our little show part of your day. And here's how today's show is going to go. We're going to start off by talking about a number of topics we got lined up for you guys. Then in the second part of the show is when we're going to take your live comments and questions. If you guys have a thought, theory, opinion, or an issue you'd like us to discuss, as long as I deem it appropriate to be discussed on the show, we'll take your questions in the second half of the show. All right, guys, with that all down, let's get things started with this, shall we? Well, welcome to September. Brand new month, September 1st. I still cannot believe it is September already. But all right, Avengers Endgame Encore comes out this month. We can now say that. Avengers Endgame Encore comes out this month, looking forward to that. But there's also a lot of other movies coming out this month. So what we thought we would do here today is take some time to kind of walk through most of the wide release films that are coming out this month that you may not have on your radar already and some of them you may want to put on there. Let's get over and take a look at the movies opening up this month, shall we? We're going to start off with onslaught. Now this is the new one with Audrey Arzona and Dan Stevens. The trailers are out right now. It looks pretty simple. Three brutal super soldiers going on a killing spree and Arzona is going to protect her daughter looks extremely violent and you know what? The first reviews have been coming out and they're actually pretty good. I expected the reviews to be pretty bad, but the reviews right now, which just came out today, the last I checked was sitting at like 74%, which is a lot better than when I thought they would be. So we got onslaught coming here on September 4th. Then we've got the new Mark Wahlberg and Yaya Abdul Matin, the second fresh off of Wonder Man in their new movie by any means. And I watched the trailer for this last week for the first time because I didn't really, it kind of flew under my radar. This is about a week ago. I watched the trailer for it. You know what? Number one, I like Mark Wahlberg. So I feel bad saying this. I have a hard time taking the movie seriously with Mark Wahlberg in it. And I think Mark Wahlberg is a very good actor and I like Mark Wahlberg. So I don't know what that kind of reaction was, but that aside, it actually has, I mean, obviously it's going for it, but it's got little overtones of Mississippi burning and a few other things. I actually think it looks pretty good. So I'm interested in by any means necessary. All right. Then we've got one that I totally forgot about, but fall to dead point. I'm not going to lie. I never saw fall one. I never saw it. The gist of it is these girls decide to go on this the most dangerous path into bet along a mountain side where anything and everything can go wrong. And clearly something goes wrong. Look, some of you may know this, some of you may not. I have a fear of heights. And I, this almost affected me as much as that trailer for Whalefall because I'm watching this trailer and I'm like, my butt cheeks were clenched so tight I could have popped a bottle. It was tense. I don't know if I can watch it, but it looks better than I thought it would. So that's a fall to dead point is coming out. Did you ever see this shot of me on half-dome? Oh my God. That's that's almost 5,000 feet up. Dear heavens, I don't know that I'd be able to do that. I'm not sure I'd be able to pull that one out. I don't know if I can do that now. I was a lot younger and dumber than I don't think I'd do it anymore. All right. Then coming out on September 11, we've got a number of films coming out. Practical Magic 2 is coming out. Now of course, this is one that they did a preview for us at CinemaCon. I'm not going to lie to you. I never saw Practical Magic 1. Although I'm going to say it looked charming. It did. I've never seen the first one. The second one looks pretty charming. I don't know if anybody's going to be interested in it who didn't see the first one like me. But they're saying it's going to open to like 40 million dollars, so it's clearly a bunch of people have seen it. That's Practical Magic 2 coming out. Then we've got the uprising now officially known as the uprising, the rise of Robin Hood, is now the new one. Look at that. Jonathan decided to throw me off by throwing in the German poster for it. The uprising, furodiathricks. Right. Right. Listen, I am still kind of befuddled on this one, guys, because I was dead into this movie. I was so into watching this movie. I really wanted to see it. The previews for it at CinemaCon were fantastic. And then last week they hit us with that, oh, by the way, this is a Robin Hood origin story. It's like, what? What? So look, I mean, it's, look, it's still Andrew Garfield. It's still Paul Greengrass, right? And I got a lot of faith in both of them, so we'll, we'll see how that turns out. All right. Going to the other end of the spectrum for films I do not have much faith in, Alan Richon and Owen Wilson, wow, in Runner, uh, Runner is coming out and up until last week I never even heard of this movie. And so when I watched the trailer last week, I realized why I never heard of this movie. And I kind of wish I still have never heard of the movie. This is a terrible looking film, uh, with every mid 90s action cliche without great mid 90s action. And listen, I take no joy in saying that because if any of you guys know me, I love Owen Wilson. I have loved Owen Wilson ever since Shanghai noon. I, I've, I've just always loved him. I think he is one of my favorite performers in movies. And I've become a really big fan of Alan Richon too, but my God, this movie looks terrible. It looks so bad. I will not be gracing the theaters for Runner, even though it's got a couple of guys in it that I really, really like. All right. The last one here on the first part is the fix. Also under the category of movies, I have no plans on watching. Uh, Liam Neeson, who I really like, Zachary Levi, who I will always adore for, uh, uh, Chuck. Uh, I mean, look, I'm still on board with Chuck. And I don't care what he says. I like the Shazam movies. I love the first Shazam movie. I like the second one, it was a step down from the first one. I like Zachary Levi and obviously I love Liam Neeson. But again, this just looks like take this genre, take 40 films like it, drop it in a, in a blender and see what comes out. And, uh, that is the fix. So again, another one I am not planning on watching on September 11th, hopefully I hear it's good. I hope all movies are good, but I just don't have a lot of faith that it is. All right. Let's move on to September 18th. And starting off on September 18th, we got four films. One including resident evil, the new one, um, and title, resident evil, the new one, the new resident evil, the new one for dice, I can find them. Um, I, listen, I'm not a huge fan of the resident evil stuff. Rob, we were at Cinemacon and they showed us a pretty hefty preview of it. And damn, if it didn't look pretty good. So I, I don't, I don't know, are you, have you been excited about this one? Have you been looking forward to this? I, I gotta tell you, I read the script for this movie. Oh, really? Thanks to the man with the plans, Zach. Craig, he co-wrote the script, he directed it. - Which is the main reason why it's really on my radar. - And I will tell you and he said a lot about this in the promotion of the movie running up to the promotion of the release of the film. He's talked about what he wanted to do is capture the flavor of the game, meaning that you have a character that gets caught in the middle of the situation and he's like a player in a game where he has to find things, he has to search for things, he has to find a gun, then he has to find the bullets. And so what he was trying to do, and I think at least from the, on the page, they really accomplished this idea where this movie puts you, it really is what it's like to play a Resident Evil game. I thought it was really clever and judging from the latest trailer, both trailers, I can't wait to see this. I think it's, I think it's my second, most eagerly awaited movie of September. - Well, it is, you don't have to wait long now, it's coming out in 17 days, September 18th is when that Resident Evil. Now also coming out on that date is, what might very well end up being the best movie of September. And it's called The Weight. This one didn't hit my radar till just a couple of months ago. Now it's got one of my favorite actors of all time, Russell Crowe in it, and Handsome Hawk himself. And I know a lot of you guys have not heard, I don't think we've talked about it on the trailers, right? The trailer is absolutely fantastic. And a few of the upper end critics have seen it, and they are raving about it. And again, I just can't get enough of Handsome Hawk. I can't get enough of Russell Crowe. This looks just like great tense vent. I don't care about your gold, I just want my daughter. It's just such a great line in it. Anyway, The Weight is coming out on September 18th. This is one you guys should completely put on your radars. Then we've got one coming from Angel Studios called Daniel the Fire Referness, which is an animated film. Then also we've got Sean the sheep, the Beast of Massey Bottom, which the award for best title of September goes to Sean the sheep, the Beast of Massey Bottom. I like the, look, I'm not as big of a fan of the, of the last Sean the sheep movie. I like it though, I thought it was pretty darn charming. And I pretty much like anything these guys put out. The Walson Grommett stuff is fantastic, obviously. So I'm not going to pretend like this is super high on my anticipated list, but I like what I'm seeing. All right, then we've got another one coming out that I am very excited to see actually. Heart of the Beast with Brad Pitt and Dog. All you have to say is and Dog, and you generally get my attention. I am a dog guy. David Ayers, new movie. And David Ayers, new movie. The trailer looks really sharp. The trailer looks very, very good. It's intense. And this is an F-Dup Dog, man. This is a dog that's been through it. And I just, I just think it looks awesome. I'm very excited about seeing it so heart of the beast. Then the movie that I think if it's, if the weight is not the one that's going to be the best film of September, it's going to be this next one. Forgotten Island. I've been kind of raging about this movie for a while. I did not like the initial trailer. And some of you know this story. But I was so disinterested by the trailer that even though they were doing a screening of the full film at Cinemacon, I wasn't going to go. Now, it's based on Filipino culture and mythology. So saying to my Filipino wife, you go, I'm just going to stay in the room and relax. It's a non-starter. That was apparently not a good thing to say. Because I got the look and oh my God, am I ever glad I did. Because this is my favorite animated film of the year. I haven't seen Wildwood yet, so that could change. But it's my favorite film of animated film of the year. It's in my top five, actually. As of right now, Forgotten Island is in my top five overall favorite movies of the year. I've seen it twice already. I cannot wait for everybody else. It's just, don't get me wrong. It's not the next lion king, okay? It's not the next lion king. But this is an endearing, extremely funny, very charming animated film. And I am so glad that I got dragged to see it because it's just one of my favorite films of the year. And I can't wait for you guys all to see it. All right. Then we've got one that a lot of people are talking about. Prime time, the new Robert Pattinson movie is coming out based, of course. Based, some might say loosely based on the real story of to catch a predator, as there might be some lawsuit stuff going on out at this point. But whatever, the trailer looks great, no more. You never hear the twat of that, boys. You never hear those anymore, right? Everybody woke the fuck up. Robert Pattinson's the real deal. And he looks great in this. And so that's one we're obviously really going to be keeping our eye on. And then, of course, to end off to cap off September 25th, that's a packed day. Hard of the beast, forgotten island, prime time, and Avengers Endgame Encore, of course, re-releasing. And again, I'm kind of getting, I'm not going to lie, guys. I'm getting more and more excited about seeing it. Again, I can watch it right now if I want on my TV. But I'm kind of getting more and more excited about the idea of watching it in a big pack theater again. 'Cause it's, yeah, I might have to do an encore time, double feature of prime time. - Prime time? - Yeah, prime. - You call it encore time. - Or Avengers time, whatever. - Yeah. - I'm really excited about watching this in a pack theater because that, well, I think Infinity War was the better of the two. It's just hard to put into words, it's one of the best watching with an audience experiences you can have. As a film. So anyway, Rob, let me go over to you on this here for a second. So you're looking at films like OnSlaught by any means, Fall to Dead Point, Practical Magic, The Uprising Runner, The Fixes, a lot of films coming out this month. Resident Evil, The Weight, Sean The Sheep, Heart of the Beast, Forgotten Island, Avengers Endgame Encore, which out of all these are ones that are really standing out to you that you're excited about seeing. You haven't mentioned my most eagerly awaited film of September. - Which one did I miss? - A film that I, from one of my favorite writer directors. - Okay, but this was the only list of wide release films. So please continue. - Okay, Nahong Jin, who directed The Yellow Sea, The Chaser, and Ten Years ago his last film, The Whaling, came out. He's one of Korea's greatest writer directors. This movie he made actually stars the husband and wife, I don't know if you could say stars, but features the husband and wife team of Michael Fassbender and Alicia, was it? - Vikander. - Vikander, Alicia Vikander. It is called Hope, and it is a movie about a small town outside of the Demelitarized Zone in Korea where they think a tiger has gone rogue and is killing people in the town. Well, guess what, it ain't a tiger, it's aliens. That's right, it's aliens. And who plays some aliens in this movie? Michael Fassbender and his wife. I don't know if you, this movie got all kinds of crazy play it can. People talked about it. If you've seen the trailer, it looks bananas. I love the way it's shot with these wide angle tracking shots. I can't wait to see this movie. It opens next week. It opens a week from tomorrow. And if you haven't seen the wailing, if you haven't seen the Yellow Sea or the Chaser, this guy is an incredible writer, director, one of my favorite Korean filmmakers. And I am dying to see this movie. But other than that, I mean, onslaught, you know, you've got from the director of the monsterverse. And also, you know, fall to the second trailer. I'm not scared of heights, John. I don't like heights. And it's hard for that trailer got me. I mean, I never want to be on one of those. It's tense. That's a tense trailer. It is a tense, it is a very tense, tense trailer. And, you know, I got to tell you, too, there's a bunch of movies. This is going to seem weird, but there's a movie coming out. I think it's only on streaming. I think it's on Netflix. But there's a TV series called Call My Agent, which is a multi-in that where there's all these, it's a trench. It's about an agency, like a talent agency. And a lot of American movie stars have guest started on this show. They made a movie. They made the Call My Agent, the movie. And which is wild, you know, I think that's that they've made that. But I guess that doesn't, you know, that doesn't count. But it is coming out. So I'm excited about that. Of course, I was going to say the wait. And I'm glad you brought up the wait. Because you know, I saw the trailer. I want to say like four months ago, like it's a trailer. So right, didn't it come out I forgot about it. And I was like, oh, yeah, and I told him for a long time. - I really want to see that there's another limited release that I would be remiss if I don't mention this because it's based on a book I dearly love. It's a Soviet book called The Master in the Margarita. And I used to be married to a Ukrainian and I've had a fetish for Russian girls my whole life. And they made a movie of it. And the movie looks very-- - Are you for Russian girls? - They didn't make a movie of my family. - Oh, okay. - No, my ex-wife wouldn't let me make any movies about my fetish for her. So that was a bummer. Maybe that's why we're not married. But the Master in the Margarita is coming out. I know it's a limited release, but I'm really looking forward to the movie. And it looks great. And I think that Baz Lerman, he's involved somehow. I don't think he directed it, but I'm curious to see it. - It doesn't really count 'cause we're only talking about theatrical-wide release films, but I will throw out their-- - It is limited release, by the way. - That Kenneth Brawner, Ryan Reynolds film, maybe it is coming out, and I, you know, I said, when the trailer dropped for it, I said, "It's hard for me to have any belief in this film "'cause it's being dumped and streaming." Someone involved with the film showed it to me. - It's pretty good. - It's a pretty darn good movie, actually. So I had to eat my words a little bit, but that one's coming out to you. Anyway, guys, let's stop talking about that. - We gotta go ahead with that. - I just wanna say that Mayday is directed by John Francis Daly and Jonathan Goldstein who are slated to make the new Star Trek movie. - And all the guys who are behind Dungeons and Dragons. Yeah, they're great, they're great. But again, I just, I couldn't have any belief in it because it should have been a theatrical release. It shouldn't have been dumped on streaming, but there you have it. All right, guys, anyway, the question is for you. There's a ton of stuff coming out in September, a little something for everybody. All right, guys, with that down, let's move on to this, shall we? Well, you know, peacemaker is another one of those really, I just love these things. Something that I looked garbage. I thought looked like garbage. I thought it was a stupidest idea in the world that they were even making the damn show. I saw the initial footage and trailers for it and I thought it looked absolutely hideous. And then I watched it and I instantly fell in love with it. I love peacemaker. And you know what else? I love peacemaker season two. I really do, notwithstanding the finale, the finale, which completely went south. Unfortunately, the finale wasn't any good, but that doesn't change that I thought the season as a whole was really, really strong. And I love peacemaker. But after peacemaker, they, there was a lot of questions about whether it was even gonna come back. As a matter of fact, James Gunn and some interviews that even kind of sound like he was implying that they don't really have any plans for peacemaker. Like not saying that they're definitely never coming back, but he kind of hinted and sometimes straight up said that right now there's no plans. Like right now, like so there was a question about whether or not they would ever come back to John Cena's peacemaker, which again, I thought one of the dumbest ideas in the world they ever make the damn show. And then I fell in love with it. So there you have it. But now, hope springs eternal. As James Gunn, who is very probably the most active on social media studio head you're gonna get, he responded to somebody asking him straight up. They asked him, this is in the good folks over at Sinoveland. Her note, no like I'm talking very literally in this case. When asked on threads, which is where James Gunn is active, if there was any chance for peacemaker season three, Gunn shared his no word response with the contemplative emoji, the emoji. Now, obviously this in and of itself and by itself is in no way shape or form any kind of confirmation that we are getting peacemaker season three. Let's be clear. That being said, James Gunn gets a million of these every day on social media and 99% of them just doesn't respond to them. 'Cause he shouldn't for the most part. The very fact that he decided to give a response to this. Clearly, and he knew full well it would have got now people talking about the note. - G'day, I'm Justin Wolfus, host of the platypus economics podcast. Or maybe it could be just checkmate without John Cena, but I mean, I think this was kind of leaning towards peacemaker. Now, how they would do it, where they would do it, I'm not really sure guys, whether or not we would be talking literally a peacemaker season three, are we talking about peacemaker is actually gonna be peacemaker will return in man of tomorrow or in some other project. Hell, I don't know, maybe shows up at the end of lanterns and starts cussing out John Stewart. Maybe yes, maybe no, anything's possible. I do know this, notwithstanding the horrible, horrible season finale, which was terrible. There's no getting around it. I love this show. I think it's so far, it's kind of like my live action version of Harley Quinn, another one that I thought was a stupid idea and looked terrible and then I just fell in love with it. That's the animated side for me peacemakers, the live action side. I for one would love to be able to start tuning in watching more peacemaker. I don't even need a great story. I just need the crew hanging out together and shooting barbs back and forth, 'cause I'm so thoroughly entertained by it. Anyway, Rob, you saw this story. Is there something here to talk about? I mean, it doesn't mean something that James gonna do a response, does it really ultimately mean nothing? Do you believe we're gonna get another peacemaker? What do you think about this? - Well, I believe that everything is worth paying attention to. And if James Gunn's talking about something, look, obviously he loves peacemaker, it's his baby and it's not that expensive to produce compared to other things. It would not surprise me if we get a peacemaker season three. It wouldn't surprise me. And I quite enjoyed both seasons of peacemaker, to be honest. And I, you know, look, is it going to happen? I have no idea. Is he being cheeky with his audience? Sure. But on the other hand, you know what? He got his contract extended a little bit. So, why not? Why not? - Who got his contract extended? - James Gunn did. - No, he did not. No, he didn't. That's not true. Like, I know, look, we should probably put the brakes on this one right now. You've probably seen about 50 outlets running with that. And it all came from one thing. Our friend Jeff Snyder on the Hot Mike podcast, it wasn't a story. It wasn't a story. He just off-handed mentioned, I mean, he just got an extension and blah, blah, blah. That was it. It was one line he said, off-handed. If James Gunn had signed an extension and Jeff had the scoop on that, which by the way, if anybody's gonna get the scoop on that, Jeff is definitely one of the top guys who would. And Jeff was gonna get the scoop on that. It would be a headline. He wouldn't just throw it away in one off thing. What I think Jeff meant, and I actually texted Jeff about this, but I haven't heard back from him, but I did text him about it earlier. And the thing is, you gotta remember, James Gunn's contract was originally to 2026. Then, not too long ago, he did sign an extension into 2027. - Oh, okay. - That was a bit ago, but he did sign an extension that went from the ending of his contract. 'Cause remember, his initial contract was a four-year contract that took him from 2022 into 2026. He then later signed an extension that took him into 2027. That's why we've always been talking about the fact that his contract is-- - That's what I didn't know about Jeff Snyder's thing. I just thought that he was-- - Yeah, now let me be clear here. Let me be clear. Is it impossible that he could sign an extension? Of course he could. Delukin Abdy got given extensions kind of as a safety net prior to any of the portable thing. So that could absolutely happen with James Gunn, 100%. But when Jeff Snyder breaks a scoop, he breaks a scoop. He doesn't mention it as a throwaway off-handed remark in a conversation about something else. - Yeah, I didn't hear that. - Yeah, then just everybody ran with it as-- a headline, and it's like, and so I called somebody after I saw all these people running with headline calls, and he's like, has guns signed an extension? They're like, as far as we know, he hasn't. And so other than the one that's taking him into 2027, but yeah, I mean, that's all I figured because, you know, he's obviously in post on man of tomorrow, and his contract goes through 2027. But I don't know when it probably right after the release of man of tomorrow, but I think it's shortly after the recent man that gives him plenty of time to make a peacemaker show if he wanted to do so. Yeah. So anyway, just to clear that up again, not to say he, you know, I believe he's going to leave after his contract's up, but I don't know he's going to leave. He could very, just so everybody understands he very well could sign an extension, and it's absolutely feasible that he could stay. I mean, he's the CEO of a studio. He could absolutely do that, but just to clear up a lot of the misinformation that's flying around right now. Anyway, getting back to the peacemaker stuff for just a moment, again, I'd be down. The ratings for peacemaker were always great. Do I think it says, do I think peacemakers is good as Penguin? No. Do I think peacemakers is good as lanterns, only three episodes into lanterns, but no, but it's a very different kind of show, and I think it's a comedy. It's absolutely fantastic. And I love it. Anyway, guys, question is for you. James Gunn actually took time to respond to a question about the continuation of peacemaker. It's absolutely cryptic, no doubt about it. But personally, as a fan, I think even the fact that he responded to that one kind of maybe hints at something. I don't know. What do you think about that? Under the category of old man on yard yelling at clouds, time to talk about Ridley Scott. Of course, coming off of the absolute burning inflames flop of dog stars, which apparently cost well north of $100 million to make and made $8 million. I want you to wrap your heads around this. Coyote versus Acme made twice as much money on its opening weekend as dog stars did. But anyway, coming hot off the heels of that abject failure. And again, remember, let's do you misunderstand me. I think Ridley Scott is a premium, burst, ballad, hall of famer amongst Valhalla of the great directors of all time. That I believe he can make 50 terrible movies in a row if he wants, doesn't change the fact that he's one of the greatest and his place is secure. That being said, he sucked for the last 20 years, other than the Martian. Now one of the films that I thought was a real big disappointment was Gladiator 2. Not his worst film by any stretch, but certainly one of the ones that wasn't so very good. And now Ridley Scott has decided to come out with a theory about why. And it's not his fault. He wants you to know it's not his fault. Nope, it's his, it's it was his star, Paul miscal. It was Paul miscal's fault that the Gladiator 2 lost money. Here's what they wrote over the folks at ScreenRat. Said the month Gladiator 2 debuted, Paul miscal was announced as the lead of Scott's new post-apocalyptic movie, The Dog Stars. However, two months later, miscal dropped out and was replaced by Jacob Allority. It was announced that this was due to scheduling conflicts with the upcoming Beatles biopics, which I'm very excited about not watching, in which miscal plays Paul McCartney. And a new report from Puck suggests that a different version of events. Their source is a ledge that Ridley Scott said, miscal, quote unquote, wasn't masculine enough for Gladiator 2. And he blamed him for the Gladiator, Gladiator 2's disappointing box office, Paul. So he's got a low T cut, huh? Yeah, I, so look to put this into perspective, Gladiator did, Gladiator 2 did make over four hundred million dollars, right? The problem is it was a ridiculously expensive movie. And there targets the general consensus was a movie that needed to make north of 600 million to break even. It lost hundreds of millions of dollars. And worse, it wasn't a very good movie. Not as worst one, but not a very good movie. I find it interesting that the director of a film, who is the individual, who is most responsible for the performance they get out of their actors, has decided to point at the performance of his actor and blame that actor for the poor box office performance of the movie. Now, look, to be clear, I never, I like Paul miscal very much, like his, oh, what was the name of the Shakespeare, the take on the, on Hamlet, Hamlet, yeah, I'm net brilliant movie. And Paul miscal is so good in it, Paul miscal is a very good actor. But look, to be honest, from day one, I did, I thought he was miscast for Gladiator 2. I agree. I thought he was miscast for it. I really did. But, Ridley, you're the director that you had something to do with that. Casting director and him for final approval. Yep. And, if you don't like the performance, if you don't think miscal is exuding enough masculinity or whatever, that's on you, you're the director. Before the one sitting in the chair, watching the performance, you are the one who's supposed to be guiding and listening out of the performer, the performance that you want. And if you don't get it, you say cut from the top. And then you go over to the actor, say, do I want more of this? I want more of this. Now, look, can, can you expect a director, like I don't care, Steven Spielberg's not going to get an Oscar performance out of Gal Gadot, no matter how good Steven Spielberg is. You can't get blood from a stone. But I mean, we are talking about an Oscar level actor and Paul Miscal and a legendary director. You can get the performance out of him you want. And if you didn't, that's on you. And, but here's the problem. Well, I agree that I thought Paul Miscal might have been miscast. The main issue with the movie wasn't Paul Miscal, it was a bad movie. With terrible pacing, ridiculous tropes, predictable dialogue, it was just a bad film. Now, again, not absolute garbage. It wasn't Craven the Hunter, but it was a bad, disappointing film. And that had nothing to do with Paul Miscal. Again, miscast, I agree, yep, miscast, you should probably should have been somebody else. I didn't see him as Maximus's son. I just didn't see it. So that's fine, but to hold out the actor now and to throw them under the bus, you know, to me is number one erroneous, but number two, classless. And at what point do you just stand up and say, yeah, I just didn't make a good movie. This is on me. I'm the director. Apparently never. Yeah, apparently, no, it's, and it's everybody else's fault except Ridley Scots. And I don't know, I was very disappointed to read these comments. But again, I think, especially on top of the comments from the other day where Ridley Scott came out and said, yeah, I think I need to do another Aliens movie to save it because, you know, Alien Romulus was okay. Yeah. I'm sorry. He's a producer on that. Yeah. Well, in name only, but I'm sorry, Ridley, it's better than anything Aliens related you've made in a long time, not ever, but in a long time, since Aliens, too, since Aliens, yeah, but here's the question, who's going to, who, what number one, what actor is going to want to work with them now? And secondly, what studio is going to want to invest money in and that he keeps talking about making another alien film? Does he really expect, especially after dog stars, that Disney is going to put up the money for him to make another alien movie? I just, I don't know. I don't know. And look, I recognize too that Rob, I am, we've talked about Ridley Scott a few times now in the last month or two, and I want, I understand, it might start looking like one of the subgenres of my channels being a Ridley Scott bashing channel. And believe me, I don't want to be that. But I think he is one of the greatest ever, I don't want to be that. So forgive me if it sounds like I'm going down that road too much, I don't intend to. But Rob, I think this, at very least this is a bad look. Anyway, you read these comments as a producer, as a director, what's your take away from this? Look, you know, after the fact, I've always believed that, yeah, you can reassess and you can take stock in what you've done. Monday morning. quarter backing, especially with collaborators of yours, and especially when you're the director. I don't think it behooves anyone to bash the film itself. I mean, I have no problem looking back and taking into account mistakes I've made. I mean, I think that that's part of growing up and maturing is being able to look at your work and find the shortcomings of it if they're indeed our shortcomings. I think in Gladiator 2, there was a lot of things in it, and I don't necessarily disagree that Paul Muscow was a little bit miscast because he's a little quiet. He's a little quieter and more introspective as a performer. He's not a Maximus Desmos Ridious. He's not like that. He's not that guy. I'm looking forward to him in the Beatles movie though, but I don't think it behooves anyone. But you know what? Ridley Scott is of that age, you know, pushing 90. He doesn't give an F. And I think that, you know, he's on a tear to make as many movies as he can while he can stay, while he's able to on this on God's green earth. And I just wish that, you know, I think I wish he'd worked more with his longtime editor, Pedro Scalia, who's finishing all of his movies. And I think, you know, Ridley Scott makes these movies in any kind of bails during post. So he goes into pre-production on the next movie because he's trying to get so many movies done. But I don't think it's really served him well. I think the last movie, I mean, I think the Martian is one of his greatest, if not his greatest movies. Oh, it's so the Martian is so good. Yeah, I mean, you know what? Honestly, the more I think about the Martian, it could very well be in like my top 25 of like my all-time favorite movies. Yeah, you know, it's that good. It's so fantastic. It's so good. And like many of his movies, you know, he's got a he's got a theatrical cut and then he has an extended cut for video. He's done that on so many of his movies. And, you know, I love the extended version of the Martian. I just, because it's got more character stuff and more of the NASA, all the people like Sean Bean and and those actors. And I'm a huge fan of his. He's clearly one of the great visual, visual stylists and all of cinema. But, you know, I don't. And certainly he's diverse in terms of the subject matter he's attacking. Yeah, I just wish, you know, that saying something like this is sort of unbecoming. And, you know, I feel bad. I mean, I don't think you can blame. Look gladiator too, it the fault of it. And it didn't bomb. It was just really expensive. Well, I mean, I lost like a couple hundred million dollars. I think when you lose a couple hundred million dollars, it's yeah, but I mean it, you know, it's still made like 450 million or something. Yeah, but it needed to make a billion. But the gladiator too was why, why make that film? You know, I mean, I think there was stuff there. I thought I thought Denzel Washington was clearly having a great time. But the film was, I mean, gladiator is so iconic that I, what's the reason for doing it? I mean, someone gave him money to make the film. So what's he going to do? He said, no. Well, look, I'm not, I'm not going to play Monday morning or Tuesday morning. In this case, a quarterback on it. I, I was all four of them taking another shot at, at another gladiator. I was all four because if done right, it could have been spectacular, right? Yeah, but, but it wasn't. So we are, where we are left. Ridley Scott, who just had probably one of the most disasters opening weekends of his career, maybe not even the worst, but one of them definitely with dog stars is Paul Miscal breathing a huge sigh of relief this month, by the way, that he did not end up being in that movie. You know, one of the great sayings, uh, all the world is a stage and all of its men and women merely players, you know, things like that amongst those has to be thunder, thunder, thunder, thunder, thunder cats. Oh, uh, is one of the great Shakespearean quotes of all time. And of course, I, like many people, uh, when I was younger, adored and loved the thunder cats. Now, you guys might remember that director and a wind guard came out a couple of years ago was going to be making a thunder cat's movie. All has been quiet and assumed dead, but Adam wind guard is now saying who, by the way, has his new movie, uh, coming out here shortly is now saying nope, I'm still doing thunder cats. We are still developing it and we are still moving forward with it. Uh, this comes us from the folks over at geek tyrant wrote this, the long awaited thunder cats movie hasn't been sent to the litter box just yet. Adam wind guard, the filmmaker behind godzilla x Kong, the new empire is still developing his big screen on the classic 1980s animated series progress has been slow as other movies has pulled his attention away, but wind guard says the project remains alive and he and his co writer Simon Barrett have continued working on the script. Wind guard signed on to direct to and co write the thunder cats back in 2021 with plans to make a hybrid CGI animated movie rather than a traditional live action adaptation. Since then, his schedule has filled up, leaving fans wondering whether Lionel and the rest of the thunder cats were ever going to make it to theaters. So, but he's gone on to say yes, uh, my, my career's gone a lot of different directions recently, but believe me, we are still developing. I think they've now finished the second draft and they're planning on moving forward with it. I think I still have the same questions about a potential thunder cats movie as I had before, but I have a few additional questions now. First of all, you have to be of a certain age to understand this, but when I think of a thunder cats movie, I still go back to this fake fan made trailer 20 plus years ago, where it was Brad Pitt, is Lionel Vin Dieselus Panthro Hugh Jackman as a Tigra. Uh, you had, oh, I forget who else he had in it, but I don't know how many of you guys ever saw that. I'm sure you can find it on YouTube if you haven't. Yeah, I've seen it. You have seen it. Yeah, we were at AMC when that came out. Oh, it was, it was, it was a while ago. It's actually even before that. It was before that. Yeah, it was before that. I think it was, it was before I moved to Los Angeles. Yeah, but I mean, yes, we did. So when I think of a thunder cats movie, I must confess that that's what my head goes to, uh, I think understandably. So I, I thought if you're going to do a thunder cats movie now, why, why not be, and I thought this back in 2021, it should probably be a live action one. I don't know if there's a real hunger to go to the theaters to see an animated thunder cats movie. CGI traditional animated hybrid could be very visually interesting, but I think there'd be more of a hunger for a live action one. Okay. There's that fast forward now a couple of years to a post masters of the universe world that we live in. And now I have more questions like after seeing what happened with masters, the universe, is there an audience for a thunder cats movie at all? They've over the past number of years, they've tried making various versions of thunder cats on TV, all of them have sucked. Um, but you know, some people in the live chat are saying, well, don't forget about Acme. Yeah, but Acme was completely different. Right. Cody versus Acme is a completely different thing. I think it's fair to say that masters of the universe and thunder cats kind of fit in that same bucket, right? And I just don't know if there's a way to do thunder cats today. I don't know if anybody in Gen Z is going to care about thunder cats. I certainly don't know that any millennials are going to care about thunder cats. I don't even know if there's a lot of us in Gen X who still care about thunder cats. I do, but I'd be more interested in in a live action version of it. But even then, after seeing what happened with masters universe, I don't know that that's practical either. I don't know that you can walk into a studio executive's office right now and make a compelling business case saying, hey, give me $130 million to make a live action thunder cats movie. And I guarantee will make profit. I don't know that you can make that case today. I just don't end that he's still saying he wants to do it animation style because he wants it to have the same aesthetic as the original animated series, which is great if you're old enough to remember the original animated series. So look, this is going to be one of these movies, Rob, where heller high water. If Adam makes this movie, I will be there day one with bells on. But I am much like coyote versus acme. I'm not going to have any trouble finding seats. At least that's my fear. Anyway, Rob, are you surprised to hear Adam Wengard saying that they're still moving forward with this thunder cats movie? Do you think they're taking the right approach? If you're a studio executive, do you green light this? I don't know how you feeling about it. Well, I look, I think if you're a filmmaker and you have a project that you're passionate about it. you never really stop working on it until the day somebody tells you know and even then you're hoping you can pull it out of a drawer a decade from now and make it. So I understand why he's he's keen to make the film but I do think John that not every IP stands the test of time. Yeah. You know and and the problem is everyone looks at Transformers like Michael Bay's Transformers movie and and they look at what the Transformers at least for the five or four movies what that series grossed and they look at that may go okay well at any eighties childhood hit the problem with Transformers is they're not the problem the benefit of Transformers is they transform into cars and vehicles which are still relevant and you can put them in the real world and it's cool like watching Transformers battle on the freeways of LA is let's quit it's dude it's awesome it's awesome now it's awesome forever because cars that turn into robots battling on the streets of LA are or or if it's star scream or whoever is always going to work the thunder cats however they don't really translate to the freeways of LA they don't really transfer to anywhere in modern Los Angeles and it's you know it's a fantasy conceit that it's like well let's let's let's meld two things together it worked 45 years ago when you were a kid I don't think that there's any way unless you pointed out make it some hardcore or rated cone in the barbarian s fantasy where blood is spilled in copious amounts I would say we'd want naked breasts but that's not going to work with a thunder cats movie or maybe it does with furries today who knows but I just think that it's an IP that doesn't translate to the modern age no matter what you do with it and I think people have to take a long hard look at at I think masters of the universe was given the greatest opportunity to succeed as it possibly could you had great people behind it they really understood the assignment I really liked masters of the universe more than you did I know but I do think that that there's a lesson to be learned here and maybe some fantasy oriented IPs just aren't worth recreating with a hundred million dollars for today's theatrical audiences anyway guys question is for you what do you think about this at a win guard says he's still developing his thunder cats movie which I will absolutely go to see I just don't think I convinced anybody to go with me what do you think about a good idea about it do you think it'll actually happen just because he says he's still developing developing it doesn't mean the studio is going to greenlight it wherever you guys think jump down to the comments section below and let us know your thoughts all right guys with that down let's move on to this shall we you know I think the number one group responsible for damage being done to the movie going theatrical experience are the movie theaters I talk about a lot I think they're run by let me just say they they make a lot of bad decisions they make a lot of bad decisions but I am nothing but fair and when the movie theaters any of them do something that I think is a really good or really smart move I like to call it out and in this case sheriff a boob town the CEO of AMC theaters Adam Aaron I think has just done something really smart there's a new report in deadline that says this AMC theaters gets into distribution game with the launch of Leewood films label what does Leewood mean well Leewood is the town in Kansas where their head offices are I used to have to go out there all the time when I used to work with AMC and they've launching their own distribution company called Leewood films and I think this is an extremely good idea on several levels let's go through the article in deadline see what they're saying about this AMC theaters the world's largest exhibitor chain is getting into the distribution business with a new label for small and midsize movies now this is key that it's only going to be small in midsize movies we'll get to that in a second the launch of the label Leewood films comes at a time when many independent features particularly those that have played at major film festivals don't have a home Leewood films plans to handle those movies that are fully financed and completed the company's press release Monday bills it as a low risk opportunity for AMC so understand this they're not going to don't get on you know the phone and think you're going to call AMC and ask them to finance your movie AMC's not getting into the film finance game what they are going to do is find these films that play at these festivals some of them really really good but are never able to land a distributor and get on screens AMC theaters is saying we're going to create our own distribution avenue or films that are completed or already completely financed and we will give it an avenue to theatrical distribution and the creators get to keep the rights to their films it goes on to explain it this way says essentially Leewood would will be a gun for higher distributor allowing filmmakers to maintain ownership of their feature IP as well as downstream revenues the label is named after where they are located out in Kansas variants now remember they already dabbled dip their toes into this with the Taylor Swift concert movie remember they were the distributors for that variants which was behind the North American booking and distribution of AMC's previous theatrical releases Taylor Swift the Ares tour Taylor Swift the official release party of a showgirl and the Beyonce one will handle distribution on Leewood slate while AMC will oversee marketing piece of magic entertainment will handle overseas distribution and here's a couple of the other key things about this guys they are not going to make these films only exclusive to AMC theaters they are going to make these films available to other theatrical chains as well which is absolutely key also remember we talked a little bit earlier about the fact that they're going to do this for small and mid-level films the reason that's so important is because they have some big studio partners and they want to make sure it's clear to their studio partners hey hey hey us getting into this business is in no way going to negatively impact the big scale Hollywood films that you guys are putting on our screens we're going for the films that you guys are ignoring we're going for these small mid-level films the genius of this is twofold number one it fills your actually three three levels of genius on this number one it fills your screens you are going to have now ample content to put on your screens oh and by the way AMC is going to look after the marketing for the films but the reason that's brilliant is reason number two they own the venues not only do they own the venues they own the read they own the screens they own the walls they own all that kind of stuff you want to market these films the best place to market your films besides on YouTube which is something they'll also take care of I'm sure a great deal they can just drop the trailers on their screens they can put up the posters in their walkways they can create the popcorn buckets they can have the they can print on the regular popcorn buckets the upcoming mid-level indie film all that kind of they have the pipeline and the infrastructure all ready in place as the world's largest theatrical exhibitor and with other movie theaters and other movie theater chains partnering with them to also play those films it can create a revenue stream it also does not present any real financial risk to AMC they don't have to put up the money other than what they want to spend internally on marketing but that's not going to be nearly nearly as much as a traditional marketing campaign for other types of movies this is in their theaters these films are already fully complete or already fully funded and they give these films an outlet to play so it's incredibly low cost for them to do it they have the infrastructure in place it gives them content to put onto their screens and here's the other great thing about it this is fantastic for small indie and mid-level filmmakers because it offers another totally viable avenue to get your films in theaters because if you get your films in theaters you literally have a five hundred percent higher chance to get picked up with a streamer later on for a secondary revenue stream AMC also says these will obviously have 45 day exclusive windows before VOD 90 day exclusive windows before streaming so it's great for filmmakers it's great for fans are going to get access now and their local theaters to see movies and types of content that maybe they would not have been able to see or appreciate before it's great for AMC itself and it's just good for the industry this is one of the rare times if I wasn't a fair man I wouldn't say this but this is one of the rare times that you really have to call out something very smart being done this is a great move this is a thought out move and guys it's not so something they're jumping into because one of the things I know from AMC having worked with them for years was they move very slowly. They move painfully slowly, but they do have a philosophy. You've heard it before, but it truly is a core foundational philosophy at AMC. Crawl, walk, run, and you got to go through those stages before they do anything. They studied their movie membership program for nearly a decade before they implemented AMC A list. They toyed with this with the Taylor Swift Aristor idea. They saw an opportunity, they're taking it, and especially guys, when you're looking at the breakouts that we had with things like obsession and whatnot, that they can get in there, become a real player in this, create more option and opportunity. Listen, I'm sitting here trying to figure out the downside of this, and I'm quite frankly not really coming up with it, especially if they make sure their bigger studio partners are on board with them in this. Anyway, Rob, I think this is a tremendous idea. I won't be surprised if within the next year and a half to two years, we hear regal might be, might engage in the same sort of thing. What do you think of this whole thing of Lee Wood distribution? John, for all the reasons you just said, I love it, you know, I'm prepping right now finishing up a $500,000 film that I'm a producer on called White Devils. I'm just finishing some effects work on it now, and we would love to have a company like AMC book this in a number of theaters. I think what they really need to do, it, look, it's going to, it's going to really be contingent upon how good the movies are and how much they create what I would do is I would start now and create a brand that specifically is targeted to the Gen Z audience to come support new visions and new, new works that you wouldn't normally see except if you come to AMC. Because you know, we have, we sort of have a cult of movie personality today and we saw it this year a lot. We first start with Markiplier's Iron Wung, which he released himself theatrically, which I saw on the theatre to a huge opening day, there was a huge audience for it and he leveraged his social media presence to get that out there. We saw it with obsession, we saw it with back rooms to a certain extent. And you know, I saw film last week called It Ends that Neon picked up, which is a micro-budget movie, but it was certainly worthy of being seen in the theatre with an audience. And if we can have them really, it's going to really be contingent upon how good the movies are. That's really the key and how much they put into making their audience aware that when you come out to see one of these movies, you are supporting new voices, new visions and really attacked from the social media standpoint. But I think I'm very excited about this. I read this and I was salivating and I'm thinking this is fantastic for everybody who wants to make movies because I think more and more students and more and more young people are looking at what happened this year with movies that are going to get into movie making. I would expect after this year, we're going to see an explosion of people making theatrically oriented films for people that came out of the woodwork. And I think it's great and we need AMC as planted a flag and I'm excited, man. It's dope. Of course, you're right. It's going to be about do they pick quality movies, the tough stuff they get, but again, I just think of every before the audience, it gives us more options for filmmakers. It gives them a brand new avenue. They can get their stuff to the screen because if you get your stuff to the screen, you're pretty much guaranteed that you'll be able to pick up some kind of streaming deal afterwards. I think it's good for AMC. And therefore, I think this is good for now. There weren't really clear on how many projects a year they'll pick up. Like if they do five a year, which you know what, they might because crawl walk run and then maybe build up from there. But I mean, I think anything on this is is a good thing. I know all my friends who are independent filmmakers are going to love this, they're going to love this. So AMC does a lot of really stupid things. They really do, but you got to call it out when they do something really well. And this is a really smart move and I give them all the flowers for it, which is great. Guys, question is for you. What do you think about this AMC is going to start their own distribution arm. You're going to pick up already fully financed and completed films that don't get picked up by anybody else from the big film festivals are small and medium level and put them on AMC screens. I think this is a win, win, win. I really, really do. I applaud them for it and I hope it works out. You know, one movie I wouldn't pick up for my distribution company Street Fighter. Yeah, this, this is not a good looking movie to me. I didn't like the first looks they gave at it, didn't really like the trailer. I think it looks like something that's made for grade school children and even that would probably insult their intelligence. That being said, it's got a lot of people in it. And I thought the same thing about peacemaker and I ended up loving peacemaker. So keep that in mind. They dropped a new trailer today for Street Fighter. And listen, I know there are a lot of people who watch my show that are excited for Street Fighter. God bless. I wish I could say that that I was as well. But listen, man, I got to say I, you guys know I love Jason Memorial. I love Noah Centino. Oliver Richards, who is, of course, he's going to play Zangief. He was the monstrous poly in the last season of Reacher. A lot of people think he should be the new, uh, in the new God of War that he should be the new Kratos. He's unbelievable. Andrew Koji is the man. I love Andrew Koji is a lot of people involved with it. I'm going to cheer for. So the new trailer for it came out today. And you know what? It's still not very good. That said, there was a moment in the trailer that came out today that I literally had to, I laughed so hard that I had to pause the video because I was going to miss, like I was literally leaning over in my chair, laughing so hard that I had to stop it and not laughing at how bad. I mean, laughing because it was a great joke. And it was that scene near the end of the trailer where Kyle pulls up in the car and being played by Cody Rhodes. And he's got the, the scar marks down the side. And the one guy comes up who I assume his name is Dan. And the guy comes up and goes, Kyle, who did that to you and the lion is, oh, I don't know, Dan, is there anybody in the tournament that uses claws? That's obviously the one guy who uses claws. And I, I just, I was not expecting that I, that that joke was going to be so funny because I laughed my ass off. I just thought it, it was really, really funny. Now again, look, I don't, I think everything else in it doesn't work. But again, there are lots of things that I've thought that of. But before I saw the whole thing and then ended up falling in love with them, I, I mentioned earlier in the show, Harley Quinn was one such thing that I felt that way about and then I loved it. Peacemaker was something I felt that way about and then I loved it. Maybe this will be the same. I hope it is. But yeah, man, all, all I know is like, look, if this movie can have six, seven or eight moments like that guile moment, I might just walk out of this theater pretty entertained. I might, I, I just might walk out of this theater entertain. So again, look, I'm just going to be honest with you. I will, I never lie to my audience, so I'm just going to be straight up with you. I still don't think this looks very good overall. I don't have a lot of faith in it. But it's starting to show some glimpses that makes me think maybe there's some possibility. Anyway, Rob, you saw the trailer, the new one that dropped today. What did you think about the new trailer for Street Fighter? I didn't love it. I liked the last trailer more. And I have to say that second trailer for Street Fighter definitely peaked my interest. The first trailer, not so much. Look, I went and saw Mortal Kombat too. I didn't love it. You know, after 45 minutes, I was so like, what's going on? Why do I care? I like the music. I like the sound design. It was, so it was definitely, I could, I could sit there and be entertained. But, you know, again, even though it's based on a venerable IP, a favorite video game from years past, it still needs to be, to be, to be a great movie. The jury's out. I will go see it, John. I will go see it the Thursday or Friday it opens. I guarantee you I will. Whether I like it or not, that remains to be seen. But I would say this. This did not make me jump up and down excited to go see the new Street Fighter movie. It just made me realize that Raul Julie is not going to be in it again, and I'm set. But you know, other than that, look, I love me a good martial art. movie. And I saw Furious a couple of months back. I didn't love Furious, but I want to see a movie give me some good fighting. And I'm happy. You know, it might not be the rad, the raid. But you know, if you get some great for fight choreography, I will watch it. And maybe this movie has some that I will be happy. Here's my fear. And again, I'm saying it's a fear. I haven't seen the movie. So I don't know if it'll be able to avoid this or not. But my fear is any great fight choreography is going to be spoiled by the ridiculous cartoonish stuff like, I know, like the the arms stretch, but I just don't know if it's going to be spoiled or maybe it'll accentuate it. Maybe it'll make it better. So I don't know, like Jonathan, you look, I don't know about you, but I think if I counted up all the quarters that I put into Street Fighter machines, particularly Street Fighter 2. When I was a kid, I think it probably adds up somewhere around north of $700,000 of quarters that I've spent playing this game. I don't know. You saw it, you kind of grew up as Street Fighter as well. What did you think about the new trailer? Yeah, and I was actually more of a Mortal Kombat fan, but I'm just wondering if this is going to be a step ahead, at least of Mortal Kombat 2. I mean, that's where I'm curious to work because I actually do like that there's some depth to re you and Ken, you know, and their storyline. So I'm just hoping that they kind of focus on that, but I'm not trying to give it more credit than it, you know, it deserves. I am intrigued by this re you and Ken relationship, though. So gosh, I don't know. I saw another trailer where it was just a fight scene and it's like, yeah, the dialogue is what you would think. It's just the cheesy action movie dialogue. So it's got to go beyond that if I'm thinking it's going to be a good movie, but then do I want it? Do I want it to be more than just a silly action movie? I don't know. I'm torn with this, you know. See, I don't know why there's a belief that to take a video game, it has to just be you just have to accept that it's just going to be silly and stupid. Like I don't I don't believe that. I think you can take and be painful. Yeah, I think you can and again, maybe this movie accomplishes that. I listen, all I know is this Andrew Koji deserves to be a star. This guy is awesome. Not only is he like a true legit martial artist, he's got a wonderful screen presence. Yes, he does. Oh, he's so good. And like, there's a bunch of people in this movie I like, but the one anchoring thing for me is Andrew Koji. And he should be a big mega star as far as I'm concerned. And I will, I'm going to cheer for this movie. Again, I it's like cheering for the Maple Leafs. I know they're going to lose, but I'm going to cheer hard anyway. I am going to cheer for this movie, even though I don't have a lot of faith in it. But if for no other reason than Andrew Koji, man, and Noah Centrino and of course, you know, Jason Momoa and everybody else involved with it too. But I really want him to succeed. So it's his performance. It's his performance that originally made me think like there's glimmer of depth in this movie, I think. Yeah, we'll see. Maybe, maybe we'll see. It could be a reaction comedy. You know, no, okay, look, if it is, then look, again, it'll be the next peacemaker for me. If it turns out to be a great action comedy, I will be the happiest guy in the world now. When is this movie actually come out? Because it's not September. It is October 14, October 14. So we're a month and a half away now from it coming out. So the same day that Vision Quest debuts. And that's going to be a good day. I should verify just in case anyone like, I don't mean like this is like going to be hammin, you know, in a fighting room. Although I'd watch that hammin at a street fighter. I mean, I, I would have, I don't really think it's a news flash to see that it's rated PG 13. I would have been shocked if it was just rated PG. I mean, there's clearly a lot of mature stuff in it. So I think that's, that comes in right about where I thought it would. All right, Draco Aries writes, I'm going to see the first Harry Potter movie in 4D tomorrow. Nice. Looking forward to seeing it on the big screen. Yeah, I haven't seen those Potter movies. Well, no, I take that back. I think before the first, a Newt Scamander movie, the Fantastic Beasts, I think right before the first one came out, there are local theater did like a double feature of a couple of Harry Potter movies leading up to the release of the, of the Fantastic Beasts. And I went with Ann because my wife Ann is a Potterhead. I went with Ann to go watch them. That was the last time I've seen any of them on the big screen. So I'm glad you're going to be able to see those again. Man, it's been a long time. It's crazy how old those films are now. All right, Jake Toven writes Gal Gadot claims that gun told they would still do wonder one with her around the time he took over on the Josh Horits podcast. That's old news that that was out a long time ago. They there were some ideas they were floating around. They gunners talked about this and they just decided to go in a different direction. So and again, that's old news. That's something that was actually out like two years ago. I remember us talking about that. All right, dad jokes rights have almost spent all the diamond money son. Like what? That thing was the size of a peach. What the hell have you been spending the money on a yachts and Lamborghini's boats and hose my friend boats and hose? Look, for those you did not see it. We Robin. I did a lanterns post game show last night. I can't believe how good this show is now. Now I'm not ready to say it's as good as Penguin. But so far to me, it's as good as Penguin so far. It could break South real quick, but we'll see, but man, yeah, that I am loving this show so far. I am loving this show, but yeah, that was a funny line. Dad jokes. All right, Disney gifts rights. Hey, John, do you remember a couple of years ago? A Barney movie. Yep. Was coming out that was going to subvert our expectations. Did that get reworked into the buddy movie that is coming out this weekend? Not to the best of my knowledge, but that was the first thought that came to my head. Like when I first saw the trailer for it, I was like, and what's the guy's name from nope or not nope? Get out. Is it Daniel Caluah? Anyway, yeah, he from get out and from Black Panther, he was going to do this bar, he was going to produce this Barney movie. That was going to like subvert expectations. That was the big catch phrase around it, right? It was going to subvert expectations. And then we haven't really, which honestly, I thought it sounded like a dumb idea, but we haven't really heard anything about it in ages. And then I saw this and I'm like, is did it turn into this butt to the best of my knowledge, Disney? No, to the best of my knowledge. I could be wrong, but to the best of my knowledge. Okay, next up, we've got Gerita who sends in, I'm not quite sure what that is in check money, but whatever that is, thank you for sending that in hand, right? I watched End of Oak Street and I loved it. I love horror monster movies. I am not squeamish, but as someone who has a panic fear of snakes, that scene in the house made me almost crawl under my seat, but I wish the movie got the attention it deserved. That is a fun movie. End of Oak Street. And I don't know if they just simply didn't have the budget to mount like a full proper marketing campaign for it or whatever the reasons behind it are. That movie was really fun. That movie was really, really fun. I had a good time with it. Like the first thing I said when I came out of the movie there, because I didn't out of theater reaction for it. The one I said was, if this were a Jurassic Park movie, it would be the second best Jurassic Park movie after the first one. It's because I think End of Oak Street is better than any of the other Jurassic World Jurassic movies. Jurassic Park, Jurassic Anything movies. It was a fun little film. I thought it was a great ending. Nice little twist and surprises along the way. And half the way, you and McGregor, both amazing in it. I had a really good time with it. I'm glad, and yes, that's snake scene. I like that just, I'm not particularly have any kind of a phobia with snakes like I do with heights. But even, oh my God, even me, that was tension inducing. That, yeah, that would freak me out, that scene freaked me out. All right, next up, Joshua main writes, I'm 28 years old, I've watched all kinds of different TV shows in my lifetime. Lantern's episode three is without a doubt the best episode of television I have ever seen. It was absolutely incredible. I, myself, Joshua will not go so far as to say it's the greatest episode of TV I've ever seen, but it was a damn good episode, man. The writing in this show is so top notch, so far, we're only three episodes in, again, I've seen lots of shows that start off well and then go south. But yeah, man, I just think it's absolutely fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. And whole second here, yeah, I just think it was incredible. I loved it, and you know, I can't remember I said this on the show yesterday or not, but I said to Rob, I said, I can't remember the last time I watched an episode of a comic book show that had absolutely no action sequences in it, 'cause, you know, I like my action in my comic book shows, but that had absolutely no action in whatsoever that I liked that much. And yeah, it was pretty damn good, man. All right, next up, let's see here, Disney Gifts writes, Mr. C, you know movies and food. My wife and I just got back from Vegas and loved Bokin'al. Even got my seafood hating wife to try crab and lobster. Yeah, man, if you go to Bokin'al, which is the buffet, I think the best buffet I've ever been to in my life. It's in Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. It's expensive. All right, it's expensive. Like, Ann and I only treat ourselves to it maybe twice a year. It's 'cause like, on certain days, it's like $85 a person. If you try to go Saturday for dinner, you're paying close to $100 per person. But I will say this, you get your money's worth. The food is remarkable. There are some people who try to say the food at the win buffet, which is also very good, is as good as Bokin'al. It's not, don't listen to that. "Days of Thunder is not one tenth of a, as iconic, "or as pop culturally sustaining as Top Gun. "It just isn't." Now, I don't, I'm not saying that if you're a big fan of Days of Thunder, I'm not disson on the quality of the movie or anything like that at all. I'm just saying, I don't think it's very controversial to say that Top Gun is far more of an iconic movie than Days of Thunder. I don't think that's a big stretch to say that. No, Days of Thunder II is not going to be a billion dollar film, like Top Gun was. Actually, if I go and look at Paul II, Tom Gun, box office, so the original Top Gun, which, I mean, at its time, I think it was 86, it came out in, yeah, it was 86. But even at that time, it made twice as much at the box office, more than twice as much, as Days of Thunder did. Like I think Top Gun made over $360 million at the box office, whereas Days of Thunder, I think made a hundred and something million dollars. So even in their original context, Top Gun was literally twice as big as Days of Thunder, but again, pop cultural legacy wise, Top Gun is a far bigger name, a far more iconic title than Days of Thunder is. So again, none of that is to say that a Days of Thunder II cannot be successful and cannot be great. I'm not saying that at all, but you can't make the comparison to Top Gun when Top Gun was literally twice as successful and 10 times as pop culturally iconic as Days of Thunder. So you can't really make that comparison. So that's the only point that I'm trying to make on that. All right, thanks for that refugee and appreciate it, man. All right, Dapper writes, Lawlets Mike Judge Reclaim Ownership of Beveson Butthead from Paramount after 35 years. Are there any other 90s IP you'd like return to the craters? Not really, honestly, not really. And by the way, that is not a blanket truism. It's not like anybody who created anything after 35 years they get it back. That's not a blanket thing. There are specifics to it that has to meet specific circumstances, but that's one of them. But honestly, off the top of my head, it's a really fair question, Dapper, but it's off the top of my head. I really can't think of one that I could think of. All right, next up, Mochi writes, "What's your opinion on making Magneto?" Oh, this again. "What's your opinion on making Magneto still a Holocaust survivor? But his mutation slows down his aging." Oh, so you mean making him a completely different mutant than he is? Magneto's mutation is nothing about being an immortal or being slow aging or anything like that. Anyway, I've, sorry. I've answered this question about 5,000 times, but I will answer it again here. But his mutation slows down his aging, so he's a hundred years old, but still looks 30." Absolutely stupid. Absolutely 100% idiotic. You want to fundamentally change the character. You're talking about changing him that literally changes everything about how you handle the character. Because not only is he the master of Magnetism, oh, by the way, he's also a hundred years old. That is nothing to do with the character of Magneto. That is not one of his power sets. All for what? To keep one detail that will probably be never brought up again in the movies anyway about his past, the only thing that's important about his past. And remember, the Holocaust survivor thing was never a part of Magneto's origins. That wasn't introduced until 1981 when they changed it. So anyway, the important thing about Magneto's backstory is that as a child, he witnessed human atrocities that forever changed and turned his heart against humanity. Now, when you were making X-Men in the 90s, you could make the Holocaust that. You can't do that today. You want to change a core foundational fundamental thing that permeates everything about the character by giving him completely different mutant powers. Also, you can keep one historical detail that will not come into play throughout the rest of the character's run. It makes no sense whatsoever. It's like buying a $5 bill for $500. It makes no sense. It makes no sense. You want to create complete wholesale fundamental changes to the character to preserve one historical detail that could easily be played by another piece of history that will probably never be mentioned again in the rest of the X-Men run. It makes no sense. It makes no sense. So no. Absolutely not. You don't fundamentally change the core of the character. Just to me, and what are you gonna do? What are you gonna do in 2040 when they have to cast a new magneto? Are you gonna say, well, now magneto's 150 years old? Like, it just, at some point times change the look. I've said this before, I'll bring it up again. When Batman and Detective Comics was first introduced, Batman did not have supercomputers. Batman did not have satellite networks. There is a lot of things about Batman that are just standard things about Batman today that was not a part of it then. But the thing is, it's 2026. It's not 1962 anymore, right? If you're doing Batman today, you can't do them the same way you did them in 1962 because the world Batman lives in now is a completely different world than it was back in the '60s. You can't have that piece of history Like when super. man when Kellogg landed on earth in the first that like after the first action comics came out and they started going into his origin story about being sent to earth from krypton. You can't have Eisenhower as the president anymore, but you know, in the original origin story of Superman, the guy who was president when he first landed on earth was I don't even know who it was, but let's just say it was Eisenhower was Eisenhower. So now you got to say Superman actually landed on earth a hundred something years ago and he's actually a hundred something years old. Why? So you can still say out Eisenhower was the president when you just say somebody else was the president when he landed, right? As the era has changed, you have there are just some details about comic characters. You got to change. They just have to change especially if it doesn't affect the core of who and what the character is. And so yes, no mochi cat for the 500th time fundamentally changing the entire nature of the magneto character by giving him mutant powers that were never part of who he was just to maintain one historical detail about him that will never be brought up again is not a good trade off to me as as magneto being my all time favorite combo character. Not to me is not a logical or sensible trade off to me anyway. All right. Next up Murray Wright's buddy was very entertaining. I know Jonathan really liked it was very entertaining Barney plus horror mixed in some weird and funny moments. I'm surprised some parents took their kids screening. I was in. You know, it's funny. The one thing Jonathan told me, although I didn't ask him for details because Jonathan wanted to go see it was that it wasn't the movie he was expecting it to be and like really goes, yeah, cause the trailers make you think it's one thing and it is a horror film, but it's kind of something else. So I didn't ask for details, but I'm kind of looking forward to seeing what he meant by that. You know what I mean? All right. Black bottle all rights. Loving all three episodes of lanterns. I'm with you man. I have I've floored by this show so far, absolutely floored by the show. I mean, don't get me wrong. I don't think it's better than show gun, but I am floored. This show is so much better than I was expecting it to be. All right. Jose Ars writes. It was an honor to meet you in New York. Oh, thank you for coming to our movie meet up. Thank you for signing my battles are galactica. I have watched Project Hail Mary in different languages. Jokes are different, but it keeps the same wonderful feeling. You know what? I've offered often wondered about that. Actually, here's two things I've often wondered about. Number one, so much about humor and jokes and movies is also about the specific language and the nuance of it, right? And I often wonder when a movie is translated into different languages, does do they have to change it to still get the original meaning, or does the original meaning kind of get blown over a little bit to maintain the language? And I've often thought about that to about other languages singing like English songs, right? So like I, like hearing somebody say saying, I, like hearing a, a Japanese rock band singing Bon Jovi's Dead or Alive in English to Bon Jovi's Dead or Alive in English. The Lines rhyme, because that's part of songwriting, you write songs and lines that rhyme. And I often think, do the, but if you sing the lyrics as they are, do the line still rhyme in a different language? I don't know why that's something that really pops in my head or keeps him up at night, but that's something that really, that's really something that thing, somebody in the live chat is saying a perfect example of this, of the language shows as Shrek and Spanish the jokes are different. Yeah, I've often wondered about that. I've often wondered about that. All right. Thanks for that, Jose. Next up, Animesh writes, "Just finished dark matter. I've still not started watching it. I love everybody involved in that show. I heard it's really good, but I haven't started watching it yet." And Widows Bay, Widows Bay was quite good. And watching Silo and Ted Lasso, Apple TV seriously needs to invest in a great marketing team. I'm telling you what, I think other than HBO, I think Apple may make the best shows overall. Like Netflix has some bangers, right? Others will have some really good ones too, but I mean, overall, I think HBO is still the king of the hill, but man, Apple TV makes some amazing stuff. Like they do shrinking and they do monarch and they do Ted Lasso and they do, like, they just have so much, they do not have a lot of quantity, but man, they make up for that in quality. I think they're going to go with Days of Thunder 2 on that one. All right, Stephen Turner writes, "Do you have any X-Men/ Mutant characters outside the core of bigger ones you would like to see adapted down the line for me at Siloq? Siloq would be a really good one. Actually, we just showed on the show the other day, Boss Logix drew Anasai from Monarch and Shogun as Siloq and it's like, okay, that's all I can see now. Anasai Siloq. But for those of you who've watched me, let me see if any of you guys can guess which character I'm going to say. Those of you who've watched me for a while, you'd have to have watched me for a while. You know I've said this name a number of times. See if any of you guys in the live chat know which X-Men character is not part of that core essential team that I would really love to see featured more, see if any of you guys get it. I'll give you, I know there's like a 10 second delay and yep, Cord Cutter got it. Bishop. I love the Bishop character. I really fell in love with the Bishop character during my all-time favorite comic book story, which is Age of Apocalypse. That's where I really fell in love with the character and then I really started zeroing in on him and I've always thought that if out of any of the auxiliary X-Men characters, the orbital X-Men characters, the one I would really love to see get featured a little bit more is definitely Bishop. I would love to see Bishop featured more. All right. Thomas P. writes, "A Gargoyle's live action show, wait, really, oh it's canceled, yeah, I'm not surprised. Look, I'll be honest with you, I don't think there was ever really a future for that. And correct me if I'm wrong and I don't think it has anything to do with this. But did Peter Cullen do the voice of Goliath? Did Optimus, there he is, did Opt, did Peter Cullen do the voice of Goliath in the original Gargoyle's animated series, I can't remember. I had a chance to meet Keith David, I never interviewed him, but he was doing a movie for some friends of mine that invited me out to set one day and I went to set and it just happened to be David's last day of filming on the movie they were doing and I had a chance to meet him there and super nice guy, that was, that was a bit of a thrill. But yes, that was Keith David's voice, that's right, oh, that booming, booming voice. Yeah, I think it's, honestly, I think it's for the best. I really don't think that show would have gotten any traction anyway, but that's just me. All right, Quantum of Zen writes, one of three. There are two recent books that featured authors' notes about being adapted into Amazon series. I'm wondering if you have heard of either the girl who could move shit with her mind, never heard of it, a book series that has the world's first documented telekinetic working for the CIA and eight billion genies, a graphic novel in which everyone on earth simultaneously gets a wish and chaos ensues. Okay, never heard of the one, never heard of either either, but I'll tell you what, that eight billion genies sounds fascinating. That would happen if everyone on earth got one wish. What if everyone got one wish? Because you know most of them would conflict with other people's wishes. That is such a great concept. I've, I've never heard of it, but I am now fascinated by that. That sounds amazing to me. Thank you for putting that on my radar, man. That sounds great. All right, Fargo not writes, "Hey John, remember me? Ask you about your snoring, and I still think it's funny that you snore sometimes, and I liked your funny stories about snoring and other things you do, so have another one to share." I don't think I do snore. I think we were joking about, like I'm sure everybody does now and again, depending on how you're laying so I don't generally snore. But I know my wife has said I do sometimes and that she doesn't and then I pulled out my phone one day to record her snoring, which was at the same time both one of the most satisfying things I've ever did and one of the things I regret most in my life ever doing. But yeah, there was that. It wasn't my dad, my dad, who's like the greatest man I've ever known. My dad is also a level 11 snorer. To the point that I remember as a, this is the one I probably shared before that as a kid, I went on this big fishing trip with my dad in a couple of his buddies when I was younger and they got this cabin. But they made my dad sleep by himself in the opposite end in this other room at the opposite end of the cabin because he snored so loud. Yeah, that was the story. That was the one. All right, next up quantum, where did the quantum ones? All right, Bobby Jackson writes, do you think Marvel will release end game again as a double feature option for secret wars next year? No, no, I mean, 'cause because end game does not lead into secret wars, end game leads into Doomsday. So I could see them re-releasing Doomsday next year as a double feature with secret wars. But there would be really no point. That would be like doing a double feature of Star Wars a new hope with Return of the Jedi, right? So that probably when they, so I'm gonna guess no. I'm gonna guess no. All right, next up, Animesh writes, brand new day is just $2 million behind the way of water and almost reach 900 million domestic, which at this point is an amazing thing in and of itself. Well, yeah, I mean, it's, it's, look, we've already waxed poetic and we've run out of descriptors about just how, I mean, remember, we're talking about in the history of Hollywood. Can they history of movies? This movie is gonna be the third biggest film of all time. The third biggest film of all, you just can't, there's not enough you can say about it. Now, I, it's starting to look like it might not catch Star Wars, The Force Awakens for the biggest domestic film ever. It still has a chance. But regardless, like third biggest film in history is just ridiculous, just ridiculous. All right, the oncoming storm writes, Ridley Scott has always been my way or the highway since arguing with everyone about Decker being a replicant so his comments don't surprise me. But listen, listen, and I don't fault him for that. Like I'm sorry, I know everybody wants their boss to be, listen to everything I say and do what I say. No, listen, you're the director, the best directors, most of the backdrop, don't get me wrong. There's a lot of different ways to peel an orange, okay? But some of the best directors of all time are my way or the highway. Like I'm the one who's gonna take the crap for it. I'm responsible for this, so we're gonna do my way. And if it's either gonna work or it's not gonna work, but we're gonna do my way. And I do not fault him at all. If he is that way, and I've never been on the set of a Ridley Scott movie, but if Ridley Scott is that way, more power to him, whatever works for him and gets the job done. But when it's my way or the highway, that means you've got to take responsibility when things don't work. You don't try to pan off responsibilities. I didn't, you know, my actor didn't, that's not the reason your film didn't work. If you can be my or the highway, that means though, that when things go south and they don't work, that means it's on you. And you gotta take responsibility. I don't fault him for being a highway, the highway guy. You're a director, a lot of them need to be that way. And that's fine if you get results. And when you do get results, you get acclaimed as one of the best directors of all time, deservedly so. But when things go south, you can't then try to ditch off responsibility, you've got to really own it. So anyway, that's just kind of my take on that. All right, next up, Tim writes, "Hey John, I know that you know all about Doomsday. If you had the chance to know about secret wars, would you like to know or would you rather not?" I would take it. Yeah. If the same people who read me into Doomsday like a year ago, and by the way, I don't know every single detail. Like I know all the main plot points that from the beginning of the movie to the end, but that doesn't mean I know every single little detail. Like I'm sure there's gonna be a couple little things that surprise me in the movie. That being said, I think if the same people reached out to me and read me in on everything that happens in secret wars, yeah, I would take that call. I would take that call. I just don't find that stuff ever if negatively affects my viewing experience. Just doesn't. Before watching Titanic, I knew that Titanic sank. Didn't change my experience with the movie. And if anything, knowing as long as I did, now most people know everything that I knew. So it's nothing special. But knowing all the stuff that I know about Doomsday, it only made me more excited to see the movie. So again, I don't think it would negatively, I don't think in the slightest degree would it negatively affect my enjoyment of the film. So yeah, if they were to give me a call and offer to read me in again, I would totally take the call. I totally would. Yep, 100% I would. All right, good question, Tim. Today, I experimented with a new main show thumbnail. And I put this up as our main show thumbnail today that actually lists off directly on the thumbnail what the topics are. Like instead of just highlighting one topic, which our main thumbnail just usually does that, right? The main thumbnail usually highlights one thing we'll be talking about on the show without kind of revealing the other five things we'll talk about on the show. So just as a test today, I decided to make the thumbnail a little bit different and do it this way. If you guys can jump into the comments and let me know what you, let's, maybe it sucks. You know me, I like experimenting with things and I have no problem experimenting with something and have it not work. I'm totally good with that. So you're not gonna hurt my feelings if you didn't think it was, it worked. Or let me know if you do think it works. I'll probably experiment with it for a few more days and see how it goes. And yeah, I would love to hear your guys thoughts on that new main, our individual segment thumbnails remain the same. I love our individual segment thumbnails to be honest with you. But yeah, let me know what you guys think about that. I'm curious to know. Anyway, all right. Let's see here. Next up, we got Rick who writes, "Hey John, going to see the animated Transformers movie for the first time this month, I know you're not a fan, why is that, is it that bad?" Yes, it's terrible, it's garbage. But again, without going into the full five minute diatribe, I'll just simply say this. That movie was nothing but a backhanded punch in the face to the fans of Transformers. The whole purpose of the movie was not to make a great movie. The whole purpose of that movie was to kill off all the characters and force kids to buy all the new characters. Right, it's like, oh great, you own prowl and mirage and sun streaker and brawn and cliff jumper and optimists and like, okay, great, and wheel jack and iron hide. Great, you own all them, good, good, good, good few kids. They're all dead now. First 10 minutes of the movie, all dead. All your characters are dead. The whole purpose of the movie was to kill off the characters, all of them. And just introduce all the new characters, so kids will have to buy more toys. So because of that, I have always, I will never forgive Hasbro for that. I will never forgive Hasbro for that. It was one of the dirtiest spit in the face things of a fan base I had ever, ever seen in my life. It was just despicable and disgusting. Anyway, does have a great song in it, though. You got the touch. I mean, it's got a great song in it. 100%. It does. But yeah, there you go. All right. Joe writes. Breaking news. Noah, I don't, I've never known how it pronounces his last name. We're supposed to celebrate them and share our differences of perspectives on movies. So you don't need to agree with me. That's, that's not the point. Anyway. I made disagree in a movie. Well, every movie is hard. Every movie is hard. Is it the script, the director, the music, the actors, cinematography? Is it because both genres demand a lot? Well, I mean, first of all, there's not that many musicals, right? Think about it. One of the 500 wide-release films this year. How many are going to be musicals, two? So there's really not many. And not all of them work regardless of what their sub-genre is. Like a lot of them, a lot of musicals don't work, whether they're musical dramas or musical romances or musical whatever, right? Like a lot of those don't work either. So it's not, I don't think it's anymore. It's like how many comedies come out and like it's difficult to make a comedy good, right? Like making a good comedy is a hard thing to do. It's a very difficult thing. A lot of comedies don't work. And now you're trying to put both of them together. So yeah, while you get your little shop of horrors and things like that, that will work, it's difficult, but it's like once every few years you even come across any musical that's good, let alone a musical comedy. And when you're coming from the stage, a lot of musicals mean more to more dramatic, like like a Chicago, like a Greatest Showman stuff like that. So it's just like there's nothing particularly hard about the mixture of musical and comedy. It's just that there's hardly any musicals to start with. And comedies by themselves are extremely hard to do well. And now you're talking about the extremely rare situation you put in together and hoping that turns out it's, it's just a very difficult thing to do in and of itself.
