Being getting great results, Lailin and I just got to keep going and keep working, getting better and going through what I can come from. Just want to give our fans a huge shout out. Like just today, yesterday they said there was like over 38,000 here yesterday and over 40,000 here today. The number of people is awesome also just the energy and the excitement that they've brought today and yesterday. And welcome to Natschad! I'm Al Galdi, host of the Al Galdi podcast. I'm joined by Washington Nationals inside remarks, dorkermanofnatsjournal.com. He's at Nationals Park and isn't it funny how things work out? The Natschad on Saturday for Game 2, their three game series against the Baltimore Orioles at Nationals Park through a sellout crowd of 40,559. Why? Well, a big reason why. This was a game at which the Nats gave away a bubblehead of Washington Capitol's Winger, Alex Ovechkin, to commemorate him hoisting the Stanley Cup at Nationals Park at a game in June 2018, a game after which Ovi and many of the Caps players famously took over Washington DC, including, as you may recall, swimming in the Washington Harbor Fountains in Georgetown. The Caps winning the Cup in 2018 ended what had become known as the DC Sports Curse, which was about the lack of success for the Redskins Nationals, Bullets, Lash Wizards, and Caps since the end of the Skins glory days of the 1982 through 1992 seasons. Well, the Natsch on Saturday on again, Alex Ovechkin, Bubblehead Day broke a curse of their own, the curse of 500. It is done. A 13-3 blowout of the Orioles ending, the Natsch 15 game losing streak when having the chance to get to 500 in a regular season. The Natsch in this regular season now are 523 in 23. What in offensive showing by the Natsch on Saturday? And Mark, I was thinking in honor of the curse of 500 being over, perhaps you me and Tim shovers should go swimming in the fountains of Washington Harbor in Georgetown to celebrate the end of the curse of 500. I'm not really sure how who would want to watch that. I know the three of us and I know we have our loyal fan base out there. I'm not sure anybody really wants to see that. Maybe we can't put something a little more befitting our physiques and our personalities for something like that. But I mean, hey, we've been doing this podcast as we've talked about since 2021. And this is now the latest in a season that the nationals have reached the 500 mark since June of 2021. So it's been a long time coming for a lot of people. And I think the three of us are very high on that list. We've been waiting for, you know, five years since we started this thing to be talking about a team that was competitive to this extent. And beyond just the first, you know, few weeks or month of season, who knows where it's going to go from here. But the fact that they got there on May 16th to get to 500, it feels like a big step for the organization. Who by the way, do we credit for these great promotions in this series so far because these crowds have been outstanding hot dog night on Friday night, Alex Ovechkin, Bob, O'Hoday on Saturday, both crowds sell out crowds 38,912 on Friday evening, 40,559 on Saturday. Who gets the gold store for this because clearly these promotions have been wild successes. Yeah, I don't know if I have a specific name for that. A lot of these things are planned out way in advance. Some of them come together a little more, you know, closer to the game. I will tell you that on Saturday before the game, I actually had a long talk with Jason Sinoraja, the new team president for business operations. He revealed that he is a loyal listener to the podcast and he enjoyed our conversation yesterday about hot dog night and how the crowd was. He saw me out and wanted to talk to me, both to say that he's enjoyed the podcast, but also talk about what some of their business strategy has been since he took over. Now, he didn't take over until pretty late in the off season, so I don't know that there was a lot of time to make a lot of significant changes. But I think the one, one of the few things that I got from him that I thought is worth sharing is that he did point out that they are really trying to make an effort to focus on Friday nights and Saturday afternoons or Saturday evenings as big promotional games when they have a big thing, whether it's a bobblehead, they have some concerts coming up, the hot dog nights and other things that are on the horizon. They're really focusing on Fridays and Saturdays and recognizing that that's a great opportunity to appeal not just to the diehards who listen to this podcast and who are here all the time, but the casual fans who sometimes need that little motivation, something extra to want to come to a park. And you always have the best like environments on those weekend games. And so that has been a calculated attempt on his part and the organization in general to really focus on Fridays and Saturdays. We'll see how it goes the rest of the way. They've got more things planned as we've discussed that there is a different energy to some of this. And of course, when the team's playing well, it helps a lot. We could say that these are great promotions and good crowds, but if they lost these two games, we may be talking about how the Orioles fans were making all the noise and not the Nats fans and what was the point of the promotions if the team isn't any good. So they go hand in hand. And I do think there is a real concerted effort now with Paul Taboni as the president baseball operations, Jason Sinoraja as the president of business operations. I think there's a real attempt here at coordination between the two sides of the operation and really trying to work together to create the best environment they can for fans. Well, there is an energy with this Nats team right now. There is an energy with this Nats season right now. And it's awesome to see. And if you are a Nats fan who despises the Orioles and we know that at least a few of you are among Nats fans who despise the Orioles man. I mean, how about what is happening in this series so far? And that's with a chance for a three game sweep on Sunday afternoon. The Orioles off spending a ton of money since the end of last season have become one of the biggest disappointments in MLB and the Nats on Saturday humiliated the O's 13 three as the Nats offense again was outstanding 13 runs 13 hits which were three home runs five doubles and five singles four walks six or 16 with runners in scoring position and did anybody have a better Saturday than Cape at Ruiz. He is an ad starting catcher and number seven batter three for five with a three run homer a double and a two run single. But it wasn't just that he had a stolen base and it wasn't just that he had ABS success in this game. Cape at Ruiz could do no wrong in this game, but specific to the batting a three run second for the Nats Ruiz a one out three run homer to right field for a three nothing Nats lead out. The homer per stat cast had a projected distance of just 366 feet. So we should point that out, but hey a homerun is a home run and Ruiz in the Nats seven run seven one out bases loaded two run single to left field for an eight three Nats lead and a steel of second base on a double steel with Nassim Nunez who stole third base. The pitch low pro goes to second not in time a stolen base for the nationals in fact a stolen base times two a double steel. How about the day that Cape at Ruiz had on Saturday? It's hard to imagine the conjuring up a better all around game for him than that. And by the way, he also caught the behind the plate. And I know the final score that they have three but in Cape Cavalli we're going to get to him was fantastic for six innings and gave a lot of credit to Ruiz for the game that he called and the work that he did with him. This was really nice to see and for the first time in a while we're seeing some sustained success from Ruiz. This is his third homer in the last five games that he has played a couple of those games were more than just a home run. They were big games where he was adding extra base hits hitting for some power. He felt like the two run single in the seventh was his best moment of the game because he was really proud of himself for working the count and getting to a good pitch to finally hit. We know that he can be so trigger happy at swinging at the first pitch. He sees whether it's a strike or not. And so I think he was particularly proud of himself for waiting that that one out and getting a good one to really put a stamp on that rally, which I think was so impressive what they did after giving up the three runs and all of a sudden it's a close game. I think you go around the clubhouse and you hear how many teammates are really happy for him when he does something well. They understand what he has been through over the last several years. They know how hard he has worked to try to get better, to see some tangible results of that. I feel real good moment and vibe for everyone else in that clubhouse when they see a cable who is do this. This may surprise people listening. I know it surprised me when I saw it. His slugging percentage is 471. I couldn't get over that when I saw that. His on base percentage is just 244. He has just one walk we've talked about that, but he's slugging 471 is OPS now is up to 715. If he could be a seven something OPS guy, this would be more tenable in terms of him being if not the number one catcher than part of that catching mix. The problem has been the OPS way too often to start with a five that he's got it now though into the seven hundreds that he's slugging 471. I give credit. This is kind of snuck up. I know on me and I'm guessing on more than a few people that this guy's got a slugging percentage that's a starting to creep to 500. Yeah, it wasn't there a week ago. That tells you how hot he got here in the last week and credit him for doing that now of course. You have to show you can somewhat sustain that. But I think even beyond the numbers, what's important is the approach and situational hitting. That two runs single there. Let's even talk about three on Homer. He comes up at the scoreless game in the second inning. He's got runners on first and second with one out. How often do we think about, oh, Cabe at Ruiz, first pitch, ground ball, double play, inning over, rally killer. That's the kind of stuff that has become so agonizing and frustrating with him. What do you do? Yeah, he hit the three run Homer, but even if it wasn't the home run, just getting the ball in the air, he would have advanced the runner regardless. That's a productive at bat firm. Then the two run single in the seventh, same situation. I think it was first and third with one out. You have an inning that is starting to turn into a big inning, but it's not all the way there yet. He could have with one swing ended that rally with a ground ball and a double play. And again, what did he do? Hit it solidly over the infielders into the outfield for the two run single. I think that's the stuff that you get a little more excited about the approach. The results are great, but it's the kind of hits that he's producing. Now the pitch swinging a drive by house to deep left field toward the line. Ward going back and it is gone. Good bye. A home run and hit the railing over the flower bed and carrying back in. Ward threw it in, but it is a home run for Brady House. Well, he didn't start the day in the lineup, but he's finishing it strongly in RBI double and now bang zoom goes Brady House to run Homer. It's his seventh of the year. He's driven in three runs and the nationals continue to pour it on. It's now Washington 13 and Baltimore three. Then adds to other home runs in this game came from Brady House and Jacob Young. I love what house did in this game. He came off the bench to pinch hit and play third base. He ended up going two for two with a two run Homer and a double. I mean, how great is that six total bases on a Dan which it didn't even start? Now, the way manager Blake Bittera is doing things, House probably expected to play at some point, but you come off the bench and do that. That's terrific. Jacob Young helped to make the game a laffer. He is an at starting center fielder and number nine batter two for four three run Homer and a single young in the net seven run seventh, a two out three run Homer to left field on a one two pitch for an 11 three Nats lead. CJ Abrams as an at starting shortstop and number four batter three for five RBI double another double and a single Abrams in the Nats one run third a two out RBI double to the right center field gap on a one two pitch for a four nothing. That's lead James Woody is an at starting right fielder and number one batter one for three with a double a walk and a hit by pitch. What's funny about this game? That's up for nothing. The lead gets cut to four three with a three run seventh by the Orgals. This was not a blowout for the majority of the game. And then the Nats respond as they have done so often this season with a beginning. The Nats respond to the opposition scoring but in that's themself scoring a seven run bottom of the seventh and then the Nats tech on two more in the bottom of the eighth and then that's go from leading four three to leading and winning 13 three nine runs for the Nats over their final two innings in terms of innings in which the Nats hit the seventh and eighth innings. Jacob Young referred to the seventh inning as one of the cooler innings of the year and I agree with him on that. That's one of the cooler innings of the year I think personally I was it was just for the offense. That game was slipping away from them and you could feel that momentum shift the way the Orgals scored the three runs. They barely got out of the top of the seventh with the lead still intact to come right back and not just add an insurance runner to but then to put the game away the way they did. That was a great sign of what this lineup is capable of and what they've very often done this year is string together a rally to put up a big crooked number like that. Jacob Young by the way he's got four homers now we're just a little more than a quarter of the way through the season. He's on pace. I'm not saying it's going to happen. You know I'm pace for like 14 home runs this year. Where did that come from? I don't think anybody saw that one happening and Brady House. You're right. He didn't start the game but he knew he would be coming in. This was a weird quirk and something we have not seen yet from Blake but Tara among all the different lineups that he's fielded Chris Bassett the right hander for the Orioles really struggled against lefties so far this year. So but Tara usually wants to make sure he's got righties sprinkled into the top half of his lineup so that the other team can't match up and just go lefties. He decided in this case no we're loading up with lefties for as long as Bassett is in the game and so Jose Tena is batting third for them and playing third base for the first time this year. He's losing a lot defensively when you do that but the idea was we want that left handed bat in there against Bassett and then the moment Bassett's out of the game you figure okay Brady House is going to come in and that's why Tena was hitting third because that's usually House's spot in the lineup. So the focus there wasn't who's my number three hitter to start the game but who's my number three hitter going to be to end the game. Now Tena didn't do much offensively. It wasn't that part of the equation didn't work out but it did work perfectly for House to then come in to pinch hit for him and deliver the RBI double that was really big to get that really started and then of course a two run homer the following inning so that was played pretty well and that was calculated all along by butarrattom to do that in that manner. That is the net new process and it is lovely to see how it continues to work if you are a fan of RBI keep it Reese five RBI Jacob Young three RBI Brady House three RBI House now is the guy who you really want to see get going James would CJA Abrams have been really good. Dailyen Lyle clearly has gotten going Brady House can we get him truly going terrific game on Saturday how good would it be to have Abrams would Lyle and House all going well at the same time. I don't know that we have ever had that could we maybe possibly get that here in the coming weeks. Yeah it would be wonderful. You know House got off to that great start to the season but Lyle wasn't there yet even would had a slow first week before he started to get hot so yeah it would be absolutely fantastic to get that all going to the same time and you know Brady House is very much an unfinished product right now. He is not a sure thing we didn't talk I don't know a week or two ago about it's a possible that he could even be under consideration for a demotion if he didn't get it going obviously he's gotten a going again so that's you know a good sign of that you know how many guys are we really sure are part of this thing long term or not. Brady House is not in that category yet you want him to be the guy but he has not fully proven himself yet and so obviously it's an important year for him but I think even more so like important to get this going here soon. not make that early couple of positive weeks seem like a mirage from a long time ago and not even give them any reason to question whether he should be considered their third basement in the short term and the long term. As we all recording this installment of the podcast on Saturday night, the Washington Nationals number one in M.O.B. by quite a bit in runs 46 games, 252 runs. Now number two, the Atlanta Braves, they are playing so we'll see what they end up with at the end of the night, but 252 runs for this Nats offence over 46 games. Incredible to think about that the Nats in this season number one of a restarted rebuild are doing what the team is doing offensively. The Nats starting pitcher in this 13-3 route of the Orioles at Nationals Park on Saturday was Cade Cavali. He officially allowed three runs in six and a third inning. So, but the last of the runs were scored with him out of the game and he had eight strikeouts versus no walks and he threw eight tonnestrikes. 94 pitches, 68 strikes, just 26 balls. He did give up eight hits which were two home runs in six singles. In the Orioles three runs, seventh got charged with all three runs including him beginning the inning by giving up back-to-back home runs gave up a lead off first pitch, home or by some well-besiled to right field to cut the Nats lead to 4-1 and gave up a solo home or by Tuller O'Neill to left field on a one-two pitch to cut the Nats lead to 4-2. We've seen this a few times with Nats starting pitchers recently where the outing is good until like the very end and the very end ends up not ruining the outing but making it look less than what the outing actually truly was. I love so much about this outing from Cavali, eight strikeouts versus no walks. Awesome. Him pounding the zone as he did in this game. Awesome. So, this I think pretty clearly was a good outing from Cade Cavali. Yeah, this is one where you really have to ignore the final pitching line because that does not tell you how he pitched. For those six innings, fantastic. You just outlined it all. I'll add more to that which is his velocity was up. He was averaging I think 97 with the fast boy. Topped out at 99 and was commanding it. Well, and he said that, you know, we obviously haven't seen it here because the injury is, but he said when he has actually been healthy for a sustained period of time, he feels like that naturally happens for him where the velocity starts to go up as the season goes on and as the weather heats up. So, I think that's a great sign. It's kind of been how I progress throughout a season as well. I think if you look back at when I'm healthy a little bit as a year goes on, the strength gets there in the wheel of stays there. Also, on the warm days, it's a little easier to stay warm. The fact that the last two were not, you know, great starts by him after the really good back-to-back 10 strikeout games for him to come back that looked like his peak self in this game, I think was really important. And, you know, I know it didn't work, but I loved that Blake Butterra did let him take the mound for the seventh inning. He's only at 79 pitches. We've talked about this that, hey, it's only 21 big league starts and he's had all the injuries and they're probably going to have to monitor his workload and maybe try to limit how much they let him throw. There was no reason not to send him back out there for the seventh inning in this particular game. And I know it didn't work out and they gave it back-to-back homers and ends up charged with three runs. But I think it was just an important statement to make to say, hey, you're our number one guy. You're having a great game. Your pitch count is low. You're cruising along. There's no signs of any trouble. We're letting you start the seventh inning. We're not just going to say, nope, that's it. Six innings were done. We're happy with that. We're keeping the kid gloves on. We don't want to anything bad to happen to you. That to me is a good sign of how they feel about Kate Cavalli and where he is now in his progression. Well, and it's not fair for us to say the Nats Need More Length at a starting pitchers and Blake Buterra maybe can't be so liberal with his bullpen usage. And then when Buterra tries to get more out of a starting pitcher who's having a really good game and the decision doesn't work out for us to kill Buterra. Like, I mean, come on, you know, like you have to be fair about this and you know, you shouldn't always judge a decision by the result. And in this case, no, the result was not ideal, but you get the decision, you get the thinking and you know, you'd like to think that maybe the next time Cavalli is in that spot, maybe he performs better. Maybe there's something he can learn from in terms of what happened. It did kind of fall apart quickly, right? A first pitch home or a bibosayo and then just four pitches into the O'Neill plate appearance O'Neill ends up homering. But still good stuff from Kate Cavalli and you know, even with some of the hiccups, even with some of the shorter outings, you're looking at 10 games all starts now. He has 52 strikeouts in 46 and two thirds innings. He striking guys out. He has only 18 walks. So 52 strikeouts versus 18 walks. That's a nice ratio to have, you know, the whip is still high, 154. He's got the ERA though at 4.05. And as he is this evolving product, he is someone who I think the more you see, the more you feel like, okay, this guy can be a piece here, you know, like to what level does he get as a starting pitcher? I don't know, you know, it's hard to say right now, but he's healthy. He's making these starts. We're seeing plenty of good things and you feel like, all right, he's a piece. He's growing. And we didn't feel that way a year ago. Like I do have appreciation for how we view him now as compared to how we viewed him 12 months ago. It's a very different view of him now as compared to where he was a year ago. Yeah, when he finally came up last summer, it was just about, okay, he's finally in the big leagues. Let's just see how this goes and hope that it all works out fine. And he had glimpses of greatness within that, but it was just more about let's just get him out there every five days and make sure that he's healthy and can actually like get a little bit of big league experience. This year, he comes in having had a full normal off season of full spring training gets the opening day assignment. Okay, you're the guy now go get him. I know it hasn't been totally consistent start to start, but I feel like there's been a lot more good than bad from him. And the good has even been great. And a lot of cases and I put this one in that category until that final inning. Again, I keep pointing this out. This is only his 21st career major league start. He is such an unfinished product. They're going to be growing pains along the way, but there's so much to like about him. And games like this and then the back to back 10 strike out games was on earlier. It does show you that there is a world of potential there that this is somebody who can be a frontline big league starter. He's got a prove that he can do it every five days and that this isn't just a couple of good starts here. And then it goes south on him much like McKenzie Gore over the past few years. That's the step for him to take, but there's time for that to happen with him. It doesn't have to happen overnight. We haven't talked about his health at all. That's a great thing to mention. The velocity, as I said, is throwing 99 miles an hour. He has finally passed all the injury stuff knock on wood. And he can just go out and now learn how to become a frontline big league starting pitcher. There's a lot to like in my mind about Kate Cavali. Empatically here this afternoon at Nationals Park, our final score of the Washington Nationals 13, the ball to ball Orioles 3. The Nats ball pen did a good job in this game on Saturday. Three Nats relievers officially combined for two and two-thirds scoreless settings. P.J. Poole and did have some problems. So he officially tossed two-thirds of a scoreless inning. But he and that Orioles 3 run seven face four batters got just two outs issued a two outwalk, a gunner Henderson then gave up a two out RBI single by Taylor Ward in the left field to cut the Nats lead to four three but Orlando Reball to tossed a scoreless top of the eighth with two strike outs despite giving up a lead off double and Paxton Schultz tossed a scoreless top of the ninth with two strike outs and the Nats pitching overall in this game good and it is a wild ride here lately with Nats games and some of these final scores. I mean in this month of May May 5th and 11th three loss to the Minnesota Twins at Nationals Park. The next day a 15-2 route of the Twins at Nationals Park. We had the Nats 10-4 win at the Cincinnati Reds this past Tuesday evening. Two days later a 15-1 loss at the Reds on Thursday afternoon. Now this 13-3 blowout of the Orioles at Nationals Park on Saturday. A lot of lopsided games in both directions for the Nats year in recent weeks. And I suppose that's to be expected with a young team, a rebuilding team and a team with an excellent offense and with suspect run prevention talking about pitching and defense. And so it has been crazy. Some of these final scores you're lately. Yeah, you got the number one offense in baseball now and I don't know if they're 30th maybe 29th and runs allowed. That's going to happen. And you know, I think they are getting a lot out of all these experiences. The fact that they can that they've been able to sustain this offense. I really think that's important because really when you look at the two sides of that equation, the pitching staff, at least the rotation. It's Cavali, you know, it's Jake Irvin, but it's most of the others in the rotation are guys who are not really part of the long term plan around here. It's really kind of Cavali and the rest and not to say you don't want the pitching staff to be good, but it feels like on that side of the equation, they want Cavali to be great. And then they're just kind of biting their time until Travis Sikor and Harleen Susana and Luis Peralas and some others maybe join the party whether it's later this year or next year. The lineup as we know, they have not used a single player over the age of 28 this year. So that is [BLANK_AUDIO] of potential long-term pieces of the puzzle. So given who they're putting out there on a daily basis, if you had to choose between one or the other, which would you rather have a good offense or a good pitching staff, right now I take good offense. That to me means more because these are the guys who in theory are going to be part of the next team that wins around here. And then you've got the offense solved and now you're just waiting for the pitching staff to catch up to them here in the next year or two. And as I've pointed out, the offense is doing what it's doing with two guys who were supposed to be key contributors playing for triple-lay Rochester, right? Outfielders, Dylan Cruz and Robert Hasselbe third and you could even expand that to three if you want to include catch or hairy Ford. But like all three of those guys at Rochester and yet still the offense is doing as it is doing now, I will point this out. The Nats have had exceptional entry luck when it comes to position players. You're like, if you want to see the opposite of that, look at the Orioles and look at all of the key position players who the Oshev on injured list. So there is an element here of the baseball gods smiling down on the Nats in terms of entry luck for position players. That's a fad some injuries with pitchers. So I think we should acknowledge that. But whatever. The Nats are do some good luck. So much bad luck for the Nats since the team won the 2019 World Series. So no apologies necessary and the offense has just been outstanding. Oh, and two then went on to win five games in a row to capture the camp crown. The last two victories came against previously undefeated teams. This was a 2019 Nats like run by the Eustachudes. How cool is that and what a job by the Eustachudes in winning that championship. Yes. Congrats to them and nice job getting their monies worth on that shout out because sometimes you know, you read it off and it's like one or two sentences. No, they got their monies worth. Tim might have had it charged by the word for this one. Good for them. You know, I heard from several fans who went to that, I guess we call fantasy camp that the Nats were finally held. And there were such positive reviews of it. What the experience was like, the number of former players that they got to come down there. You know, a lot of teams have done this for a lot of years. The Nats, we've talked about, you know, they've been here over 20 years now. It takes that much time to build up the alumni base of players and a fan base that you can start holding these kinds of events and really have a good showing of people at them. So I was glad to see them doing. I was glad to hear from people that I've heard from about this that it was a well received event that they held and congrats to the champions of that league. It sounds like it was quite the impressive run they put on down in Palm Beach. And there must be a story and I don't know if it's g-rated, but there must be a story behind the name used to goods. Okay. Like something must have happened. Somebody must have said something at some point. Perhaps it was in the late night hours to come up with that name used to goods. But wow, what a job by them.
