Nats Launch 6 Homers in Rout of the Reds

Walters is open until 2 a.m. making it a great spot to watch the NBA playoffs. Walters Sports Bar and Restaurant is located just across the street from Nationals Park. That's pitch on three and one is it high in the air to left center field and deep. Backholst but day to the warning track to the wall and it is gone goodbye. Another majestic soaring high fly ball the opposite way. Bang's home goes James Wood with his 12th home run of the year. The Nationals are on the board first here tonight in Cincinnati. It's the Nationals won the Reds nothing with one out of the top of the third. Garcia from the left side of the plate and the first pitch. It's hit in the air deep right field toward the corner. Does he have another one? Yes he does. Luis Garcia Jr. came into the game with one home running now has three. He's homerid back-to-back at bats and the Nationals lead it four to two. The big right-hander Luis May to the belt. Here's the pitch. Swing a long drive right field and Dalyl and Lyle Scott another one. It's a three run shot about 10 rows deep into the bleachers in right center field. The Dalyl Fane club is delirious on the third base side. The Nationals lead it seven to two. The native of Louisville Kentucky brings them to their feet on the national side of things. Dalyl and Lyle has two home runs in two innings and the Nationals explode here in a fifth inning. He's at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. The Natsch offense at Great American Ballpark over the years has been great. And the latest instance of this happened on Tuesday evening. A 10-4 win at the Reds in Game 1 of a three game series. This was a game in which the Natsch blasted six home runs. If you look at the Natsch franchise since it moved to Washington DC in the 2004-2005 off season. The team is homeward at least five times in a game at Great American Ballpark. Five times it is the only opposing ballpark in which the Natsch of Homeward at least five times in a regular season game more than twice. The Natsch have feasted at Great American Ballpark. And this happened again in this game on Tuesday evening. The Natsch and MOP's 2026 regular season. Now 20 and 22 14 and 9 on the road versus six and 13 at home run differential of minus seven. And I bring that up because the Reds now are 22 and 20. But with a run differential of minus 39 the Natsch run differential is 32 runs better than the Reds run differential and yet the answer two games worse than the Reds. But man the Natsch on Tuesday evening all over Reds pitching two Natsch players, Dalyl and Luis Garcia Jr. each hit two home runs and a Natsch offense which as we have talked about plenty of times has been such a pleasant surprise this season had a monster outing in this game on Tuesday evening. Remember the other day out we're talking about who could be the third guy behind would and Abrams that could produce well you saw two of them and this came Garcia and Lyle and they've both gotten hot here lately especially Garcia. If either or even better both of them were to sustain this that changes the complexion of a lineup and we've already talked about how many runs this lineup has produced in spite of the fact that it's only two big names really and the rest are just kind of sprinkling them in here and there. If you get Lyle and Garcia going to this extent watch out that can make a huge difference and I think you saw in this game what depth to the lineup can do what that power threat from all kinds of different spots in the lineup what that can do they look like a really good team from an offensive standpoint they looked like a really good team in this game and yeah maybe the ball parks a little bit friendly but I feel like at least half of the home runs if not more than half of the home runs cleared defense by 10 rows at least so these were not cheap home runs for the most part. Certainly Daly and Lyle's homeers were not cheap homeers to mammoth shots by Daly and Lyle again though this that's offense as we speak here number two in MLB and runs 227 runs cannot say enough good things about how good this offense has been and Tuesday evening with something else 10 runs 13 hits which were six homeers two doubles and five singles five walks you know the run total could have been even higher than that's one just two for 14 with runners in scoring position that is the beauty of the home run you can go two for 14 with runners in scoring position and still score 10 runs of the that's got to the red starting pitcher Brady singer he loud three runs in three and two thirds innings each of the three runs came on a solo homeer the second time through the that's order for singer and the nads ended up being off and running in terms of hitting these homeers and scoring the 10 runs I mentioned Garcia and Lyle each homeering twice first time that the nads had at least two guys each with at least two homeers in a regular season game since August 18th 2019 Brian Dozier and Juan Soto Luis Garcia what has gotten into this guy since he came back from his three game absence caused by the right wrist injury Garcia as the nads starting first baseman end up a two batter three for five two solo homers and a single he in the nads to run third had it went out solo homer to right field for a two nothing nads lead despite having been down at 1.12 Garcia in the nads four run fifth the first pitch lead off homer to right field for a four two nads lead his OPS is up to seven 25 and daylin lyle he is the nads starting left fielder and number six batter three for five three run homer solo homer single lyle in the nads one run fourth lead off homer to right field on an O2 pitch to put the nads up three nothing that homer going a projected four hundred fifteen feet per stand cast and Lyle in the nads four run fifth one out first pitch three run homer to right center for a seven two nads lead that home are going a projected four hundred twenty nine feet per stand cast his OPS now is up to seven fifty four and this game a homecoming of sorts for daylin lyle he put on a show in front of a good number of people who he knows quite well yeah the Louisville kid was well represented in the ballpark tonight he said probably seventy five to eighty friends and family members and somebody asked him like of those eighty people how many did you actually know he said pretty much all of them said there may have been a couple of distant cousins that he hadn't met or maybe only met when he was a little kid it's a pleasant for sure because you know being from a small you know city of Louisville and you know just trying to put Louisville on a map and just see all these people come out and just show to love and support but they showed up and they were in full force and you could hear them in the ballpark i'm assuming you could hear them on tv as well daylin himself said he could hear them and see them you could tell this meant something to him as the first time in the big leagues he's been able to play in front of his family and he were close to home like this so that was a really big deal for him we've talked about how you know we are haven't seen the extra base production from him that we obviously saw the second half of last season which was so good but the feeling has been like just just a matter of time he still hits the ball hard maybe this wasn't elevating enough maybe wasn't finding the gaps whatever that was we're starting to see it now i think over the last week or so he's looking more like the daylin aisle that we remember from last year still doesn't have a triple but he'll take the homeruns no doubt about it and that was really nice to see from him and with Garcia he's eight for his last 14 two homers a double and a triple his all since coming back from the wrist issue it sounds like that thing was really bothering him for a few weeks and he played through it and he didn't try not to make too big a deal out of it but you can see the difference in his swings as Blake be tear described it it felt like prior to that point he was just trying to make contact and not really worried about really swinging with any force and being healthy and that wrist feeling good so different just where the ball comes off that since taking those days off he is hitting the ball with much more authority looks more confident in the state of that wrist now he said it's still not all the way to 100 percent yet maybe 95 and you even saw him shake the wrist a little bit after one swing early in this game but he said it went away and obviously he was fine after that and had another huge game so it may be something he has to deal with a little bit moving forward but you can tell there is a difference getting those five days off his three games it took out of the lineup for five days it seems like it's made a real difference for him and it's a good reminder that even when something feels like it's not that big a deal and you want to play and be there for your team sometimes speaking up and just taking a few days off can make all the difference in the world yeah and you know it's interesting in this day and age of gambling in sports and will be teams are not required to put out injury reports other than if the team puts a guy on an injured list and so game in game out we never know with certainty like who's dealing with what and that's kind of interesting to me that even with all of betting and mbleb being in on betting that there isn't more transparency about stuff like that because you know you think about it like if you are a big time gambler right and you have this inside not list that the gnats starting first baseman is dealing with a wrist element that's really hurting him right now and yet this is in public like that's inside information right that's the kind of thing that really could be put to use and so it's just interesting to me that teams are not in any way required to be forthcoming about any elements for any players other than when teams put guys on injured list yeah and you know with him we knew after he Um, was out of the lineup. Well, he came out of a game initially, and we were told it's because of his wrist. So we, you know, you'd ask about that every day or two after that. And like Beater was honest and saying, it's still nagging him. It bothers him when he hits, not when he fields. He's going to take BP today. You know, we're hopeful that he's getting closer. It's all day today. So they've been pretty forthcoming about it. But you're right. There's no official designation like you'd have in the NFL where every day they put out an injury port that very specifically says, who's hurt, what body part, like what's their status doubtful, you know, probable, whatever the different terminology is. You don't have that in baseball. And I'm sure at times they kind of want to keep that to themselves. I think the biggest thing the teams do that I've noticed within baseball is when these guys are in these day-to-day situations and you're not sure if they can play or not, they're not in the lineup, there's always that question of, well, could he come off the bench if needed? And they never want to say it all the way because they don't want the other team to game plan for that late in the game. Or maybe they want them to think that Luis Garcia could come off the bench to pinch it late in the game. But it turns out he wasn't available all along. So I think that's where maybe the stealthiness sometimes comes in on these day-to-day situations. But I feel like for the most part, while it's not formal, they're usually pretty good about keeping us up to date. You know, provided we noticed something and ask about it. Even the NBA now has teams that put out injury reports. And the NBA injury reports are the best because, you know, players find every excuse on the planet not to play in games and teams with the tanking find every excuse on the planet not to play guys. And so you get all kinds of listed reasons for guys not playing. Garcia, though, in his return from the wrist element actually did come off the bench. That marked his return and then he started after that. So for once, actually, a guy was available, apparently, to come off the bench. But yeah, Garcia, two homers, Lyle, two homers, also homering for the Nats on Tuesday evening, where James Wood and Brady House, James Wood, as the Nats starting right-fielder and number one batter, one for four with a solo homer and a walk. He got the home run party going in the Nats two run third a one out opposite field solo homer to left center for a one-duffing Nats lead, a Woods OPS now at 930. And Brady House, he is an Nats starting third baseman and number three batter, one for four with a two run homer and a walk. He did have another defensive miss you, committed a fielding error in the Reds two run fourth, but House in the Nats two run eighth, a two-own opposite field, two run homer to right center field for a nine-three Nats lead, his OPS at 693. CJ Abrams did not homer, but he got on base three times. He is an Nats starting shortstop and clean up batter two for four with two singles and a walk, his OPS now at 922. The Nats over 42 games have hit 50 home runs. There has been an element here lately of the homers coming in bunches, that is true. But 50 homers over 42 games, that's the bottom line production. That puts the Nats on pace to hit 193 home runs over 162 games, it would be the Nats most homers in a regular season since hitting 231 in 2019. I think most of us would have signed up for say 160, 170 home runs. If this team did get to 193 homers, man, that would be something. I feel like ever since we started this podcast, we've talked about how they were ranking among the worst in the majors in home runs and we say, if you could just hit 20 more as a team, 30 more as a team, what a difference that would make. And as you said earlier on, it makes up for your other offensive deficiencies. They were not good with runners in scoring position in this game. I feel like there's been a lot of games that that has been the case. But when you can score your first nine runs of a game, all via the home run, that makes up for a whole lot of other issues. And so yeah, it's really nice to see that they have that, that they have it from a number of different players. I don't know if they'll keep that up all season long, but I'd like to think that it is at least possible to be in that range. And they're doing it well, as we said, Lyles won't kind of only start to get hot right now. From a power standpoint, they're doing that without getting hardly anything from their catchers. Certainly no power from their second basement, very little power from their center field. I mean, that's pretty remarkable. This is not a lineup full of thumpers, but they do have enough of the big boys. And then those second tier players that have the ability at any given moment, maybe hit it out of the park. The Nationals bang out six home runs. Multi-homer games for Luis Garcia Jr. and Louisville-Cantuccinated Dalyl and Lyle with two homers and four RBI's as Nationals outslugged the Reds and take game one of the series by a 10-4 final. >> The Nats starting pitcher in this 10-4 win at the Reds on Tuesday evening was Miles Michaelis. He in this start got off to a good start, but he did end up having a disappointing start. He officially allowed two runs, one earned in three into third innings. He tossed three scoreless innings, but he with a three-nothing lead in the bottom of the fourth allowed two runs, one earned on two singles, two walks, and an RBI Fielder's choice grounder. Left the game with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the fourth got charged with a second run, which was unearned. That was due to that Brady House air house committing a one out bases loaded building air on a chopper by Tyler Stevenson as House got handcuffed and coming in on the chopper. So more bad defense by the Nats and that did come up during the pregame session for manager Blake butera with you guys earlier in the day. >> We have addressed how much we care about defense and how it has been very good. >> It was unfortunate to me what happened here with Miles Michaelis because he's up three-nothing. He's going well and then he doesn't even make it out of that fourth inning. You think about the circumstance here too for the Nats, not just this particular game, but the Nats on Tuesday began a stretch of 16 consecutive days with no scheduled off days. May 12 through the 27th and that's next scheduled off day is Thursday, May 28th. So the bullpen is about to be tested. This set up quite well for Miles Michaelis who remember came to the Nats with the reputation for being an innings eater to eat some innings, but he ended up not doing that. >> No, and it was a little bit of weak contact. There wasn't a whole lot they were doing against them although the walks I think were probably the biggest red flag in that inning. He described it as he started to get maybe a little too fine and not just trusting his stuff to be good enough, but he also said the same time he knows his strength. He's got to be down in the zone and if they're not biting at that pitch, he's not going to give in and just start laying it on a platter for them over the heart of the plate because you know what's going to happen, especially in a ballpark like this. You know, just trying to stick to what I'm doing best right now. You know, a little bit down the zone with that ball in and how it changed speeds. You know, got a little squirrely there in the fourth. >> A little bit unfortunate, I think had he built up a little more good will with Buttea and the coaching staff, you let him try to work out of that fourth inning and maybe keep going. But we've seen he just hasn't earned that to this point and so they felt like, and what was still at that time a close game that they had to make the move. Now I mean to me, the savior of all this is Brad Lord because he comes in with the base load one out. They scored one run and was on an air wasn't his fault. Gets a double place. So he gets out of that inning and then gives you two more scoreless innings. After that, that saved the bullpen from your playing game one of 16 in a row. And your starter is out in the fourth inning. You're worried about the domino effect of all that. Having a Brad Lord who can do what he did in this game, almost like negates any of that. And yeah, he won't be available for a few days. Tax and Schultz pitch two innings. Maybe he won't be available for another day or two. But for the most part, that's what salvaged this and made it so it's not that big a deal that the starter only went into the fourth inning. Yeah, the Nats bullpen in this game was good. Three Nats relievers combined to allow two runs in five and two thirds innings with eight strikeouts versus one walk. The lack of the strikeout has been a big time problem for the pitching staff as a whole. But in particular for the bullpen, but the bullpen in this game did a good job in that regard. You mentioned Brad Lordy officially tossed two and two thirds scoreless innings, three swinging strikeouts, packed in Schultz, two scoreless innings, three strikeouts. That Kentage struggle. He allowed two runs in one inning. Bottom of the ninth allowed two runs on a double and two singles. But with Brad Lord, you look at what he has done here. 13 games all in relief. 28 innings, ERA 321, Whip 114, 21 strikeouts, just six walks and packed in Schultz continues to do well. 11 games all in relief. 15 and two thirds innings, ERA 2.30 Whip of 1.09 16 strikeouts versus the three walks. It is nice now that you can look at the numbers for natural levers and not be frightened. Like there actually are some guys now with some decent stats. You think about taxed and shulks, you think about Brad Lord, you think about like Gus Varlin, like there are some guys who are starting to maybe possibly have what we could call good seasons in terms of natural levers. Yeah, it's funny. You just kind of waited out, let these things play out eventually. You'll figure out who are the guys you can count on and who are the guys you cannot. And yeah, it was ugly those first two, three weeks, but it has certainly stabilized and you've now kind of figured out who are the trusted relievers or the not so trusted relievers. They've done a much better job of that, I think. And the fact they do have of the eight relievers, I feel like at least four or five of them can consistently give you multiple innings. That's a nice luxury to have. And so again, in a game where your starter doesn't go deep, you don't have to burn up everybody else in the bullpen by having Lord, by having shulks go to innings. We know that Mitchell Parker can do that as well. So I think while they may not have that one guy locked down, you know, game over when you bring them in at the end, I do think what they've now established is a group of three, four, even five guys that you feel like you can trust. And especially when those guys can go more than one inning, I think it makes a big difference. And so this has felt like a much more secure situation. I mean, they're up seven to two for a good chunk there of the game. I feel like a month ago, we'd be really nervous about the outcome of the game. I didn't really feel that way. This time, I felt pretty confident that they were going to be all right with a five run lead, which is the way it should be, of course. But for much of April, you weren't thinking of those terms. If you're up seven to two and like the fit inning and you're in the bullpen already, you're worried are they going to be able to get through this thing without blowing it? Well, something that has started to stick out is that the wild violent fluctuations in that's games that we had over the first say month of the regular season, they've kind of calmed down a little bit. We're not necessarily seeing as many wild games here lately because the bullpen has been better. I actually thought that butera might leave Lord in the game for longer. He got through the two and two third scoreless innings on 36 pitches. Lord is going to be unavailable for multiple days. Why not push him a little more than that just to maybe get another inning out of them to further save the bullpen. And again, you're beginning this stretch here with no scheduled off days for two plus weeks. Yeah, you could do that. I don't know the specific number of days that that all how it all works out, but I would guess pulling him at two and two thirds allows him to come back say on day three or four, whereas extending him for another inning, maybe pushes him to four or five. You know, we've talked about with Brad Lord, like should he be starting is he better than a few of their starters? Well, I think there's a case we made that he's more valuable for them in this role because no, he's not giving you five or six innings at a time, but if he's giving you two or three good quality innings out of the bullpen, it helping you win games. And then able to come back and do it again three days later instead of five days later, I think there's value in that. And the way they're managing the way this team is assembled right now, I think there's almost more emphasis on guys like Brad Lord and even Mitchell Parker. I know his last one wasn't good, but overall he has been good. I feel like there's almost more emphasis on them than some of the starters who they know they're going to pull at the first sign trouble. That'll be his seventh of the year. The 40th by the Nationals in their 42nd game. It's now the Nationals three. The reds two of the bases loaded and still only one out. With the defense. So we talked about the Brady House. They are also in this game. More issues at the catcher position. Kepert Ruiz had a catcher's interference error. Also got charged with a pass ball. The Nats were out on the field hours as in more than five hours before the game working on their field and Blake butera prior to the game. Talk to you guys about the defense. This has been a big topic here lately. What struck you in terms of the Nats a pregame preparation and also from what butera had to say about the defense. Well, number one, they are out there super early and I think he's going to continue to do that with them. He's very much a believer in the more you work, the better you will ultimately get. Now what I thought was interesting is he did admit in there that he felt like there was a point in the last week or so that they've been stressing defense so much that he was worried it might be getting in their heads and that they're now maybe trying too hard to not make a mistake and then what does that lead to even more mistakes. I think we almost started to see a little bit of our players afraid to make mistakes because of how many they've made. And so I thought that was a pretty interesting admission from him and it led me to follow up by asking him if he ever thinks that it might actually make sense to do less work. Let them just take their minds off it and not be constantly thinking about the defense. And he laughed and he basically said like nah, I'm not really there yet. I don't know if I can get on board with that. It's tough message to players and everybody else if we make a lot of mistakes and it's like you know what we're just going to we're just going to sit inside. And I expected that would be his answer. This is a guy who firmly believes that the harder you work on defense, the better you will get and that that's the number one way to fix bad defenses to keep working on it over and over again. And maybe he's right, but I could see the argument for the counter argument to that. And the fact that he even admitted that he worried some guys might be overthinking it or worried that they're going to make a mistake. I mean that Brady House air kind of felt like one of those plays to me. He's charging the ball. He's going to try to make a big play and he never even got a handle on it because he probably already thinking ahead to the throw he's trying to make. I would love to see them say hey we're going to take a couple days we're just show up take your standard BP your regular ground balls and let's go play and see how that works because I'm not sure that being out there or one in the afternoon feeling ground ball after ground ball is actually going to make a difference come seven o'clock at night. That's my opinion. Obviously he knows what he's doing. He has a different mindset about it, but I'd be curious of that would go. Well, it's just so funny because that is an old school tactic when Blake Butera has the nads doing like you think about the nads under Paul Taboni and Blake Butera and you think about you know there's new age thinking analytics saber metrics, etc. And here you have Butera you know acting like a 60 something chain smoking you know whiskey is sipping manager from back in the 70s or 80s like you know making these guys get out there early and get to practice like what struck me from what butera said was the athleticism thing of hey we're an athletic team in a variety of ways when you look at our base running especially we need to apply that athleticism to the defense we need to let the athleticism take over. We have a super athletic team if not the athletic one of the most athletic teams in baseball we leave league and run scored for second install bases we do a lot of really athletic things we need to let our funnesties take over defensively. But that was an interesting way of looking at the defensive struggles. Right and I think that kind of goes hand in hand with maybe like don't overthink it let your natural abilities take over and that's easier said and done of course but he's right that some of these guys are such good athletes that you would think they wouldn't struggle defensively and it shows you that defense is about more than just pure ability especially when you get into these game situations and the pressure is on and you know there's a guy running down the line and you're trying to get him out things can speed up on you and so the best who do it are those were able to slow the game down trust their natural abilities and make the plays I think it's just always fascinating to see how they try to go about doing that yes there's something to be said for repeating the fundamentals over and over just like a basketball keep shooting free throws over and over and eventually you become a good free throw shooter I think that's kind of the same idea with defense but you could also argue that the more you think about how bad of a free throw shoot if you are the harder it gets to repeat that and it's in your head and maybe there's a little bit of that going on here as well and you also could say hey you have this super long spring training you're already 40 plus games into the regular season if you're not good defensively by this point maybe you're just not a good defensive team like you guys have worked at it plenty by now and if it's not showing up as improved defense yet maybe it's just not going to be happening with this current group of guys but we shall see game two for the Nats at the Reds Wednesday evening at 640 the Nats have Jake Irving as there are probable starting picture for the game.
