My Child is a Force of Nature... and So Am I! 7 Strategies for Parenting Strong-Willed Kids

This episode of the Amy and TJ podcast examines a new defamation lawsuit filed by three young men who were among Nolan Wells' closest friends and who have been publicly accused of murdering him or covering up his death. The lawsuit names NFL Hall of Famer Terrell Owens, who reposted content calling for their immediate arrest alongside their photograph. The hosts note that Owens has 1.2 million followers and that the post reached a wide audience, which forms the basis of the defamation claim. The lawsuit offers the most detailed account yet from the friends' perspective. It states that the three young men did not share a boat with Nolan on the trip to Horn Island and were never alone with him. One of them called Nolan's mother that night to check on him and coordinated with the Coast Guard. Text message screenshots are included as evidence. The filing also explains that photos show the group wading in deep water, which accounts for why phones were left on boats. Additionally, it describes a tense confrontation when Nolan's stepfather and others came to one young man's home demanding keys, leading to a 911 call. The hosts emphasize that the lawsuit provides a more complete picture than the narrative that has dominated public discourse. Attorneys have also sent intent-to-sue letters to Al Sharpton and Sunny Hostin. A grand jury found no criminal culpability and concluded Nolan likely drowned accidentally, though his family remains unsatisfied with that explanation.

Speaker 6Hey there, folks. It is Wednesday, October 7th. And three of Nolan Wells' friends have just left. Just filed a defamation lawsuit against an NFL Hall of Famer. And they're not done. Al Sharpton, Sonny Hostin, you're next. And with that, welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ Robes. The lawsuit is making a lot of headlines. But there's a lot of stuff in that lawsuit. Also, we need to be paying attention to. We are getting a different story, or at least a different side of the story, about Nolan Wells that weekend. There's a lot here.
Speaker 7Yes, because we have been listening to lots of press conferences being held, understandably, by Nolan Wells' family. We've had Ben Crump talking about their theories, what they want to know, the mystery surrounding Nolan Wells' death, and, yes, this grand jury investigation that resulted in zero arrests. And the conclusion was reached that because they can't figure out anything else, they believe that Nolan Wells must have drowned, right?
Speaker 6We can understand why his family would not accept that. There are not real concrete answers. Why does an 18-year-old healthy young man drown with all these people around? Didn't make sense. That's granted. But, Robes, we have been hearing one story. And even the first details we heard about this story, our first thoughts were what? Why did he leave the phone behind? Why did they leave him behind? Why would he stick all these questions? Robes, some of them, theories are now in this lawsuit that haven't really. They haven't really made it to the forefront, I would argue.
Speaker 7That's right. Because, look, I think it's fair to say that everyone should have, and understandably so, his parents should still have questions about what happened to him. But, obviously, this took racial undertones. It was a black, 18-year-old college student surrounded by a bunch of white kids. Almost more than 100 white kids. I guess there might have been one or two other people of color in the group. But mostly, yes, it was a big group of white kids who Nolan Wells. And according to this lawsuit, it
Speaker 6was about 2,000 people out there that day.
Speaker 7Wow, 2,000. But you and I have watched, as so many of you listening, have listened to and read all the different theories, all the different explanations, and all the questions. But when you read through this lawsuit, and you read through the whole thing, your jaw dropped.
Speaker 6Because, Robes, a different theory is being offered. And, frankly, a lot of it does make sense. It does. We're getting a different picture of the. of the relationship between Nolan Wells and these kids. Robes, not just because they're telling us they were all friends, but, Robes, they're describing some things that happened the night before and that weekend. It's clear all these kids were a different kind of close. This is a mess of a story. We still don't have real answers, necessarily, Robes, about Nolan Wells. It is a mystery. But you throw in the race. You throw in Mississippi. You throw in how the police handled it initially. And, yes, there's a reason there are questions. But right now, Terrell Owens is the one getting hit with the lawsuit. Robes, a lot. And it's still going on out there. There are folks who are flat-out calling a number of Nolan Wells' friends murderers. And they've been doing it from the beginning.
Speaker 7Yes. And you pointed out, because I wasn't sure, the three boys, young men, who are. And they're minors, correct? The three young men who are bringing this lawsuit were the three young men whose picture was plastered in several people's social media accounts. And I was confused, because initially, I thought they were. The three white kids around Nolan Wells on the boat, that one with all of their arms around one another, that's not the picture that we're talking about.
Speaker 6That's not the one. There is another photo out there. And people have seen it. I don't know why that was such a famous photo, because he's in it. The one I'm talking about, the one that at least this defamation suit brings up in particular, is a close-up, kind of a three-shot of these three boys with their arms around each other. Nolan Wells isn't in that one. It doesn't look like even it was. It could have been taken from that day, but you don't see boating and water. Around the picture. That's the one we're talking about. That's the one they're talking about in this lawsuit. And now his attorneys are their attorneys, these three boys. We are not going to name these young men. They are minors. Their dads are the ones named in the lawsuit. But just for the sake of this story in particular, naming them robed didn't seem like the appropriate thing.
Speaker 7I agree with you. And we made that decision ahead of time, because their names and their faces have already been dragged through the mud. And once you read through. Well, we read through. We read through the lawsuit for you, and we're going to tell you why we want to make sure that we don't do any more harm. Because I'm curious, why were these three young men singled out to begin with? If there were thousands, and if there was a group of about 30 kids who traveled in different boats to this island in the group of friends that Nolan Wells was with, why were these three young men singled out?
Speaker 6Internet sleuths. People just start piecing the story together. Where he was, who he was with, and who he wasn't with. Who he was with the night before, who he'd been hanging out, who he was with in this picture, who he was with in this picture. And they put these three names together. Now, it appears these are.
Speaker 7His three closest friends.
Speaker 6Maybe the closest he had. And a lot of friends and folks knew that. So it starts getting around. Their pictures, their names get attached to it. And things took off. So, Robes, they're not the only three. There are plenty of. Just in general, Robes, there was this sense that there are murderers out there among these kids. And they are covering it up. And Mississippi. The sheriff is helping them do it. That's just been the storyline. And I guess, Robes, not enough room was left for the possibility that there are plenty of kids out there who are devastated that their friend is dead.
Speaker 7Yeah, these might not be. Well, not might. These three young men have never been named a suspect. Never been named in any way, shape, or form a part of the mystery surrounding Nolan's death. And yet, somehow, they're being regarded as racist. As murderers. When, actually, they might have been his closest and dearest friends by all accounts.
Speaker 6And by many accounts they have in this lawsuit, it certainly looks to be the case. His lawyers have now brought. Now, Terrell Owens is an NFL Hall of Famer. Terrell Owens played for the Eagles. He played for the Cowboys. But, Robes, he was one of these guys who had such a big personality and outsized personality that he went beyond just the football field. He became a part of pop culture. He had a reality show. He was always in trouble in some way in the locker rooms. He was just a big personality and a hell of a talent. hell of a dude. If you don't know his name, if I show you his face, you go, oh, that guy. Oh, that guy. Oh, that guy who went to Dallas Stadium and drove the ball into the middle and started a fight with the Cowboys. He was that guy. OK, fine. But he has been very active, Robes, on social media. And sure enough, according to this lawsuit, they name one thing in particular he did, like one post that they say is defamation. But, Robes, the very opening of this lawsuit, they make clear about how they feel about this guy, his background. And, Robes, they don't just take him on because of the post. They poke him a little bit. And some of it sounds a little personal.
Speaker 7The opening of the lawsuit reads as follows. Defendant Owens excels at attracting attention often for the wrong reasons. He is best known for his flamboyant celebrations after scoring touchdowns and divisive locker room behavior during his pro football career. Owens has once again attracted attention to himself for all the wrong reasons. This action concerns his devastating and far-reaching defamatory statement about plaintiffs in a false and malicious social media post published by Owens on X.
Speaker 6So what was that post? Now, all his, all he wrote was this, Robes, quote, arrest them immediately, like yesterday. Now, that sounds simple enough, but it was essentially a retweet. It was attached to another post by another influencer who had a video up going after these kids and flat out calling them murderers. Flat out showing, put the picture of three young men up and was saying that now there's enough evidence they need to go arrest them. And, Robes, the very opening of this lawsuit reads as follows. Arrest them and arrest them immediately. So that's what got him in trouble. A few words, Robes, but he was endorsing something else from someone else.
Speaker 7It's not how much he said, it's what he said. And to say arrest them immediately, like yesterday.
Speaker 6With their pictures.
Speaker 7With a close-up of these three young men with a video from this influencer accusing them of murder. And by the way, this video was posted after the grand jury said no one should be held criminally responsible for Nolan Wells' death.
Speaker 6They made sure to make that point in their lawsuit. I think it was five days later.
Speaker 7Yes. And their point also was just the reach that this post had. It had 140,000 views, had 571 reposts, 405 comments, and they point out that Owens has 1.2 million followers. That seems like a pretty substantial lawsuit.
Speaker 6And we know, Robes, the bar is high on defamation. But it's a lot higher when you're a public figure. When you're not.
Speaker 7Well, and how about the fact that these three young men are, I don't want to say nobodies, but they're not publicly known. And now they're being accused of murder by a very public figure, a very well-known figure, a figure that is regarded within the black community and the white community as well. But certainly where there have been some absolute racial, back and forth and distrust and just, yes, that adds to all of the difficulties down there in Mississippi specifically. And
Speaker 6you spoke to just what you said. It should be noted. Terrell Owens also offered $25,000 in a reward for information leading to an arrest for this. So you spoke about racial tones and his place in the black community and so on and so forth. There's a lot here. They go on the lawsuit and some of this stuff, Robes, I put in here to be funny. Um, the football thing, they, they keep going with the football analysis saying this was clearly a case in which Owens watched the game film, but decided instead to ignore what his brain, eyes, and ears told him so he could run his own play. The exact type of behavior that made Owens such a divisive figure during his football days. I just, I just liked that. It's a creative,
Speaker 7well-written lawsuit. I just liked
Speaker 6that part in particular. The other thing up here is where, yes, they say the defamatory ex-post placed these three young men before Owens' audience in a false light as quote, murderers and participants in a murder coverup who had escaped justice that would be highly offensive to any reasonable person.
Speaker 7That sends chills down your spine. Also, remember these are minor kids and they're now being put in a, in a spotlight, in a public spotlight by a public figure, a well-regarded public figure. And now think about that. You can imagine you would fear for your safety.
Speaker 6Yeah, that's kind of, you know, yes,
Speaker 7your reputation's one thing, but your safety is another. Some of these kids described in the early days, not being able to go to their best friend's funeral out of fear for their own personal safety.
Speaker 6I don't know which ones I would bet it's these three.
Speaker 7I would think so.
Speaker 6I bet there are several, but I would be shocked if they weren't among that group. Now, Robes, as you read into this 44 page lawsuit that yes, they go after Terrell Owens, but they also make their case about why Terrell Owens is so wrong. Robes, this is the most extensive, the most extensive, the most extensive, the most extensive, the most extended explanation I have heard from the other side, if you will. His friends aren't coming out doing full blown interviews. Robes, we are seeing some details here now that I think need to be paid attention to. First among them, this excerpt we're going to share is Robes. They're explaining the boys weren't necessarily all together and together that much. They didn't even ride out in the same boat. I was, you know, this, I was sharing this with you.
Speaker 7I was, I was of chills because to me it offers validity to what they're saying they weren't out there ranting and raving and saying look at me and i'm telling my story no they were quiet they they cooperated with police and if you read this it seems as though they were fully i don't even want to use the word cooperating with nolan wells family they were trying to assist and help and offer condolences and do their part in helping try to find their friend in those initial days
Speaker 6there is room here to have sympathy and be pissed about nolan wells death there is room here to have sympathy and grace and understanding for what some of his friends have gone through and continue to go through not everybody out there is a killer and a murderer it's possible not a single one has a clue what happened to nolan wells it's possible i know black white mississippi i get all that rose but this just offered a whole different explanation yes this is one of the
Speaker 7excerpts nolan was aboard the triton with eight other friends one of the boys in the lawsuit was on the palm was on the palm beach with three other friends the other two boys were on the tide line with 15 other friends so that sounds like none of these three boys rode out to horn island with nolan according to this that is remarkable so the boating party consisted of 30 individuals in total and at no time on the way out to the island were these boys on the same boat with nolan at no time were these boys on the island with nolan on the island where they were alone with nolan by all accounts these boys and i just keep saying these boys not to say their name were on the island nolan was at no point in uh in time alone nolan was never in distress hurt injured or in any physical danger in the slightest while they were there didn't see
Speaker 6a damn thing and there was never a point where he was alone it goes yeah and this is
Speaker 7interesting it goes on to say at approximately 3 p.m warren's sorry i just said his name but that's one of the boys names saw nolan alive and well wading in the water with a young woman holding each other nolan appeared happy and enjoying himself with the young woman with whom he spent much of the day this march the last time that young man personally saw nolan although others in the group saw him at the time of the group's departure from horn island
Speaker 6well this is a different story this is a different story did you know these three who's been accused of murder didn't ride out there with them no i didn't know
Speaker 7and we're never alone with him and
Speaker 6didn't spend most of the day they weren't out there spending time these were a lot of kids involved this is amazing the other note here ropes also about leaving that day it was the first thing we said ropes what 18 year old kid just leaves his phone behind we're going to get into the phone some more here too but yes leaving horn island was
Speaker 7another excerpt worth noting yeah he said multiple people told nolan to get on the boat but he wanted to stay on horn island with the young woman he was spending the day with nolan chose of his own free will and accord to stay on the island and return home later and he was not the only friend to stay later than the larger group
Speaker 6probes that part there makes sense but stay with us just mentioned the phone we've got new details at least another side of the story about the phone and about nolan well's friends efforts that night to reach his family and to find out where he was and plus yes terrell owens is being sued but we'll explain why reverend al sharpton and the views sunny hostin not only might be but according to the attorneys will be sued and the views of the next are you tired of the

Speaker 7NBC News. Reporting for America. Welcome back, everyone, to Amy and TJ. We are getting some fascinating and eye-opening details in this new lawsuit. It's a lawsuit by three young men. The, I believe it's fair to say, some of the closest friends of Nolan Wells who were on Horn Island with him who have been falsely accused of either murdering Nolan Wells or knowing what happened to Nolan Wells and covering it up by several high-profile folks, among them NFL's Terrell Owens, who is being now named specifically in a lawsuit. And within this lawsuit, we are getting the first details directly from the friends who were with him. And these are details we had not heard before.
Speaker 6Robes, I was floored. Right? We think we know. We've heard one side at least doing press conferences and whatnot. And I know that's what they believe. And, Robes, they're trying to get answers. I know. But this tells a complete, Robes, just a different story. It puts it in a different light. There are different details here, Robes, that I just, that give at least maybe a more complete picture. It doesn't feel like just one. One side and one side. It feels like a more complete picture.
Speaker 7It doesn't feel like a cover-up. Yeah. The way it's been presented many times. And I think in the aftermath of Nolan Wells being missing, this is, to me, the most interesting part of it. Because the lawsuit goes on to say, at approximately 11.07 p.m. This is big. One of the young men personally telephoned Christine Wells, that's Nolan's mom, to ask whether Nolan had returned home. The young man said, Christine, he told Christine that Nolan did not return with their group. And Christine confirmed that he had not returned home. And she had not heard from Nolan since the evening of July 3rd. This young man advised her that Nolan's cell phone had remained with the group on their return from the island and was secured in another boy's vehicle.
Speaker 6Not one of the three. Yeah, this is a different guy.
Speaker 7So they said, hey, his phone is in this person's vehicle. The young man also told Nolan's mom that he would call the Coast Guard out of an abundance of caution. And you said, you can see the screenshots.
Speaker 6They included it in the lawsuit. Screen grabs of time, when the phone call was placed, how many minutes it went, and who it went to. Now, sure, I guess you can fabricate that stuff in some way. But, Robes, they are including receipts that essentially show, and they explain, that he was on the phone with Coast Guard texting Nolan Wells' mom the whole time.
Speaker 7Concerned about his friend and wanting to help in finding him.
Speaker 6You know what, Robes, I read. They have several screen grabs of the text conversations. And I said to you in a damn near, it was, it, it, it was chilling. You hear this kid reach out. He sounds, frankly, Robes, like a polite Southern kid talking to the mother of his friend. He kept, yes, ma'am. Miss Christine, we can't do. He, Robes, there was a tone in the way he's talking that they said in the lawsuit at some point, you really think you just killed somebody? And the first move you make is to call his mother and to call a thug. And the second move you make is to call a thug. And the first move you make is to call a thug. It doesn't make a lot of sense. And Robes, those screen grabs, that conversation between this kid and the mom, they were just, he was, yes, ma'am. No, Miss Christine, we can't find. It'll be okay. I'm gonna stay here. Text you back. Robes, it just sounded like a kid that also was concerned.
Speaker 7Yes, and I think that's telling. And also, we were left, I believe we were left with the impression that somehow Nolan Wells' family had to hunt down and find this phone and demand someone give it to him. And demand the keys. That's not at all what this lawsuit speaks to.
Speaker 6They speak to them reaching out and telling the parent exactly where that phone was and that it was secured. And the other thing worth mentioning, these three who are being called murderers never touched that phone, according to the lawsuit.
Speaker 7Yes, it was with someone else entirely. You also pointed out some of the pictures that they attached to this lawsuit show that how these kids were in the water they were almost chest deep. Damn, babe. So you can understand why Nolan Wells wouldn't have had his phone with him. Why he would have left it on a boat because it was salt water. It was up to their waist and chest. So you couldn't keep it in your pocket. You couldn't, they weren't on an island in, you know, just waiting in like, you know, knee deep water. No, they were in the water. It's hot. It's Texas. It's the 4th of July. They're in the water. And this, if you dropped your phone, it would be forever gone.
Speaker 6Robes, the lawsuit does mention, like, this is just what kids do. They leave them all on the boat. We were confused by this when we first heard it, right? It's water. They're weighed in the water. We've been to sandbars. You can still hang, blah, blah, blah. Robes, the pictures they include in this lawsuit show Nolan Wells has a, I think it's a beer in his hand at one point with all these other kids. Robes, he's in the water up to his neck almost. All the kids, at least chest. Obviously you couldn't have a phone. All of them had to have their phones on a boat. This is not odd.
Speaker 7So it sounded odd. When he was missing, it sounded suspicious. But now when you look and see what the environment was, it makes sense.
Speaker 6Can I ask, babe, does it also make sense if you're out there having a good time and you're in the water and your friends are leaving, you wouldn't let me get my phone?
Speaker 7No, you're like, I'll get it later.
Speaker 6Because you still don't have anywhere to put it. If he would have taken his phone, he's still not having, because he's getting back in the water? You literally would have to have your hands above your head if you wanted to hold onto your phone in that water. And it's just not likely. This last excerpt we want to share here, Robes, this is a difficult one because they claim there was an incident contentious, heated between Nolan Wells' dad and one of these kids. They describe a scene, Robes, in which Nolan Wells' dad and others came to one of these young men's house and was demanding to find out where Nolan was and was demanding his keys. And they eventually found them. Then they wouldn't leave and Robes Police had to be called. This is an incident I had no idea. clue had taken place exactly so in hearing this now robes this sets up behind the scenes why there's so much nastiness maybe in public this was at least what they describe unfortunately
Speaker 7yeah unfortunately and this is death this is a desperate parent looking for answers and i do obviously race had to be a factor in this just the distrust that was inherently there but it says after 2 24 a.m on july 5th so he's been missing he hasn't come home around 11 p.m i think they realized on the 4th of july so now about three hours later they call him nolan's stepfather nolan's stepfather elmore wansley came to this young man's house and asked him whether he had possession of nolan's keys nolan had spent the night at this young man's house on july 3rd with around 15 to 20 other people he even slept in this young man's bed and the young man had to find another place to sleep that's how close they were
Speaker 6that that that was so telling if that's true babe but if you can see the scene you've we've all oh my gosh it's been at my
Speaker 7house a million times with the girls big thing they're doing
Speaker 6in the morning so they all crash here and then we're gonna go out in the morning okay this sounds familiar but robes that note that added that nugget said a lot that's
Speaker 7how close they were so after searching through his residence the young man was unable to immediately locate nolan's keys because nolan hadn't told him where he had left them another individual who was with elmore that's um nolan's stepfather had to text the same female friend who handed the phone to find out where nolan left his keys it turned out nolan had left the keys on top of a video game console in this young man's bedroom so the young man immediately handed over the keys to nolan's stepfather but elmore wasn't alone there was a group of other individuals with him after nolan's keys um after giving nolan's keys to elmore the group with him refused to leave their property even when asked to leave by this young man and his brother the group remained there and demanded answers as to nolan's location the group became disruptive after refusing to leave repeatedly this young man and his brother finally had to call 9-1-1 that's tough robes we
Speaker 6didn't know this on the night he went missing one of his dearest friends had to call the police on nolan well's dad to tell him to get the hell out of the house wow robes that was on night one and that has set the stage for everything we've seen since right yeah you understand where this man was coming from he's pissed and he probably thinks these kids know something or something's rogues you're freaking out as a parent you're freaking out you understand but rove what they describe here is almost it's people rushing into their home so what do you see a group of black folks rushing into the home of these young white men that is how the night started and the investigation started right and we didn't know that it's tragedy upon us
Speaker 7tragedy you know because you you just keep thinking we don't know what happened but if there were 2 000 people there and i didn't they say that nolan was seen as late as four or something
Speaker 6yeah we hadn't heard that like three or three thirty was the latest we'd heard but yes someone else saw him throw 4 30 4 30 4 45 but
Speaker 7the last pictures we've seen of him it's so eerie to see him almost up to his neck in water and you just start thinking all that drinking all those kids the boats you could see how someone could have lost his footing and slipped and maybe maybe hit his head on the bottom of the of the of the sandbar or whatever and then just quietly never surfaced and no one recognized because there are so many people there where's nolan oh did he go back i don't know you can see how that could happen i've seen kids go missing and drown because every there's so many people there's confusion as to where the kid is and those types of deaths those drownings those accidents can happen quietly and silently i've seen kids go missing and drown because there's so many people there's confusion i you can see i'm not we don't know that that's what happened but when you see the pictures you can see how it happened it's
Speaker 6just a different possibility and just some of the details we thought were so unlikely yeah there are some things filled in hell here baby that make sense and we know we don't know what happened but baby it's it's obviously something happened to him but the road is it's more even that detail about seeing him up chester neck deep in the water if something happens you don't fall in the water now it's not a big splash and somebody disappeared exactly she kind of just floated under that kind of thing rope so i'm not saying that's what happened we don't know there might be somebody guilty as hell in that group but if the evidence doesn't point to that and they're just i just they've so much has been presented to the public in such a way i know there are emotions on these sides and i can't imagine what the parents are going through but there are parents of some other kids over there who are hurting because they lost a friend and now they're being told they murdered that friend that's tough as well on the other side not comparing but robes this the lawsuit was all supposed to be terrell owens i'm literally reading this thing like holy hell these are a lot of details in here yeah
Speaker 7and we haven't heard them before because they haven't spoken out before they haven't but they have not they're gonna do
Speaker 6some more speaking they have already we mentioned terrell owens here but robes they are they've also filed lawsuits against a few content creators they think some more are going to be filed but also al and sonny hoston they sent both of them intent to sue letters and gave them a matter of about a week and a half to 10 days retract your statements public statements or you will be sued the 10 days is up and so we're waiting on those to drop anytime look we
Speaker 7know sonny she's a former prosecutor she knows the law she knows it well so um she knows what to say and
Speaker 6what not to say she does to get sued uh yeah so like plenty of people here know she's been a dear friend of mine uh to this household for a decade plus at this point so uh we shall see there but it's just robes the it's supposed it's never going to be over right no i don't know what answer to ever accept when two medical examiners can't figure it
Speaker 7out yeah and and it's been studied and a grand jury has looked through every bit of evidence and this is a grand jury that was diverse just to make that point clear and they you know left it open if any new evidence comes of it should be considered but given the evidence that is available now their best i guess their best conclusion is that this was an accidental drowning by
Speaker 6way of exclusion right by way of exclusion which doesn't
Speaker 7make his family feel good it doesn't at
