MPCA History Third Decade 1985-1994

Welcome to the MPCA's Third Decade Podcast And this is now the 9th podcast for the NPCA looking at all of the interesting parts of the 60 years of the anniversaries in August. And the whole year thing starts in, in August of 2026. Peter Help and Neil Williams with you. We're going to look at the third decade. I think my my little notes have got second, but we did the second. So it's definitely the third decade of the MPCA. Peter 85, Six to 94.5. Population Growth and Changing Sports Landscape Yes Neil, it is. And look, the 1st 2 have been amazingly interesting. Speaker 1 Yeah, well received. I must say. We appreciate people letting us know that they've liked stuff or if they've they've they've detected something which wasn't quite right, they're able to pass that on and we'll get dug to adjust the official records. Speaker 2 Absolutely. But you know, we, we look at all the numbers as they, as they come across our desk and trying to put that into some sort of logical sequence so that we can actually hopefully inform our listeners about, you know, some of the great sides and the great players that we had over the 1st 2 decades leading into this one today. Speaker 1 Correct. SO bit of context, give a bit of context first. Yep, decade had steady population growth, it continued at the start of it and so 80s roughly 86 when the census comes out 78,000 in the amalgamation of the three shires, they actually got amalgamated in 94. So, but it started off when you add the numbers up with 78, it reached 110,000, so about 3000 per year growth for the total of the Mointon Peninsula city of Frankston similar they hit 110,000 people, but the size expanded with all the amalgamations and things that happened in 94 and Langwarrin and Carrum Downs became part of the city of Frankston. Now the other interesting thing we often talk about roads and some of our history stuff, Pete, the road which is now Peninsula Link. Well, wasn't called that of course, but there's a little bit there between Dromana and Mount Martha became opened as a in 89 and then a, a dual carriageway that happened during this period. Other than that, you had the single road or the single lane Rd from Dromana to Mount Martha, the Nepean Highway and they've just added it in another bit then. So all of a sudden it would become a little bit easier to to to travel up and down, which helped the cricket of course. Speaker 2 I think another factor looking at these first 3 decades deal is the fact that, you know, cricket footy used to be the sports of choices pretty much Yep, And I think subsequent to that, basketball, soccer, a lot of sports were taking impact. So I, I, you know, I did, I did ask you the question on the last podcast was the last decade or maybe this one, the halcyon days. And I think in terms of the choice of sports, they pretty much footy and cricket had it to themselves they did. Speaker 1 At that stage and it, it, it did get changed, which is something we can look at coming into the into the 4th decade when we get to that in a few weeks time. Seaford Tigers and MPCA Grade Expansion All right, Seaford Tigers, a new club now on their website they they've identified they started in 199091. First time you see them in an NPCA, one of the divisions is 94.5. Frankston Bombers came in there for a while, 1992 playing where Baxter currently play and Frankston RSL also 1992 were in for a few years then they they stopped. So in 85 and 86 where we're starting. 14 grades in existence, 155 teams. Then for the last five years of the decades, there were 15 grades. It went from a grade to high grade right the way through there, of course, plus the 1st and the 2nd. So by the second half of this decade, 165 teams. Speaker 2 Yeah, well, that's 155 expanding to 165. I mean, Yep, that's a lot of teams, a lot of teams. When you say it gets to I grade, I know my club Somerville, they won a premiership in age grade, yeah. Speaker 1 You know so. Speaker 2 You know, pretty, very, very strong area for the MPCA, no question about that. Recognising MPCA's Dedicated Life Members Yep, now life members. How to feel Life members Pete Ron Chigi, board member the inaugural captain of at Tutkiruk. Speaker 2 Went bit of a tongue twist of that one. You wouldn't want to have to say that 10. Speaker 1 Times no, he, he, he, he started up, up Frankston Way, but they, they used him at at at He was on the board for at least 10 years before this. Dave Brissett, a a local teacher had been at Keringal's spent a bit of time at Mornington as well played at Keringal initiated the OR one of the initiators of the Mornington Peninsula's the Cricket Club, which is, you know, play some a few social games around the place before they had all the the veterans which go now. Frank Hopper, another Frankston fellow, Bill Foley, became a live member. Now Bill. Speaker 2 Murdoch got the pavilion named after him there. Speaker 1 Correct. And he is his son became a a minister of the crown. I he's in one of my classes actually. Martin Health, health minister during the the big lockdowns a few years ago. Yeah. OK. Martin Foley, that's his son, didn't he? Yep. So, so Bill, Bill, Bill was the fellow who held the torch for the VCCL and Country Week. And we will mention some of the Country Week teams during this one. Bev Holz, who took over from Des Holes, was secretary for about 6 or seven years. Speaker 2 From memory made it transferred from Heather Hill to Baxter. Speaker 1 They started off at Delicum Park and then yes to back to Baxter and the the kids basically did the same thing. Two or three of those played David Kirby, who was treasurer of the MPCA for about 6 or 7 years, made a life member then now. Speaker 2 We must mention David, yes, currently he's, he's been in rehab for eight or nine months. He's just got home. So a lot of people. Speaker 1 He's up walking with his Walker and. Speaker 2 Very, very happy to see that. So well done, Dave. Speaker 1 Well done, Kirby. And Brian McHugh also made a a live member there for well, he he'll tell you why he probably wrote he probably wrote the whole thing. So Bill Foley takes over as president. He held the position for the decade Bev, as I said, secretary for five years, followed by Roy Watts, who was at one point an opening bowler for Red Hill and and he was secretary for several years. Grand Finals and Medallists of the 1985-86 Season So let's start with 85. Let's look at some of the things that happened. The medalist first Pete, so in provincial Mark Britain, Somerville, we've heard of him. And then the the Paul Tracy from Mount Martha and district. He's got the district medal. And Greg Pudd Wilson from Flinders, great left arm bowler. Every team seemed to have a quality left arm bowler during the mid 80s. I thought he got the one at sub district level, some of the wicket takers. And then we'll look at the finals. So Gav Simes got 533 runs. Belnehring fellow, little young Gav Denis scary Red Hill at this point, he'd moved around a little bit, but 568 runs in that particular year QE went to Bel Naring this year, got 37 wickets. They didn't. They didn't get into the grand final. Speaker 2 Though I think that was for one year only. Speaker 1 It was it was Gary Martin in District 49. Wickets dominated for Red Hill in a ripping, ripping season and Terry Doyle was that Lang Warren at the time. 51 wickets, quality fast bowler. Now let's start with Provincial. The relegation was Baxter and Mount Eliza played Heather Hill in the grand final and Heather Hill battered first. Made 282. Tony Hillis gets 101. Skebs Martin gets 98, Tony McWilliams 8 for 98 and Metaliser cruise past 6 down and win the game. So they they had Dewey Burroughs and a few other guys making runs in and and Steve Bowen was come across and was captain that year for for Metalise and he got a few runs himself. So Metalise chasing a big score there 282 without some of the big names like McHugh and like McWilliams. Sorry, they did have McWilliams didn't have McHugh, didn't have Pearson then did very well and and had a win. So District Dromana relegated to Pete. Speaker 2 Yeah, Red Hill. Speaker 1 Red Hill playing YCW. Speaker 2 And Red Hill got 143. Yeah. And YCW was dismissed for 141 as you said Neil, Gary Martin 6 for 58 and Damien Holmes got a tonne. Speaker 1 Yeah, that's right. That's a pretty in a low, not a bad effort in a low scoring team there for for Red Hill. So he's made 100. Gary Martin, great year, 49 wickets as we said, and they win by two runs. Red Hill and then in the sub district Slang Warren played peninsula roll boys as as they were known at the time. Terry Terry Doyle puts on something like 80 runs in a partnership for the 9th wicket, gets 55 himself, makes set, takes 7 for 55. Old boys all out for 148. Lang Moran had 280 so a good win there and it was a Terry Doyle game. Speaker 2 Probably a A class above Terry in that sub district competition prior to him going to play Premier cricket at Saint Kilda. Speaker 1 Yes, yes, very, Yeah, very good. And you know, just reminding us that even though he finished his career at Red Hill, he he started at Lang Warren. So that was 868586. Key Matches and Outcomes from 1986-87 Cricket We have a bit of a look at 8687 provincial who got relegated there. Remember we said Red Hill got promoted next year, 8687. Pete's just shuffling through his notes here, but Red Hill got relegated next year. I. Speaker 2 Did I had to turn the page to look at that one? So, but it's really interesting this game, Neil Provincial 8687 because the two umpires were actually your good self. Yes, Neil Williams, yes, Peter Finney and Peter Finney. And we mentioned Peter Finney last week. We did not. He had a magnificent career over 5 or 6 seasons for Kuringal. Yep. And went on to have a terrific umpiring career. So what happened in that game? Speaker 1 Neil Well, rain basically the simplest answer and it'll affect one of the feature matches we will have at the time. So Steve Johnson had gone over to coach Mornington. They batted first, they got the five for 1:24. And then Jono and Ian Rowlands, Ian Woofie Rowlands both made 80s. Morton gets up to 322. Speaker 2 And that was a partnership of 168 in the grand final. Sensational and and looking at Caringle there Neil a lot of familiar names. Parker Mate 40 Yep, Jeff A Moore 48 Yep, Robbie Bedford 31 and Russell Davies 34. They all got starts but didn't go on with it. Speaker 1 And that was the difference. And this went into the 4th day, the reserve day and got to 9 for 238 when when he got called off. There's still plenty of overs left, but Keringle just hung on for a draw and because they were they were higher on the ladder, they got the flag. Speaker 2 I tell you what, just looking at the at that era, Keringle were a power team. They were very, very good, won a few and they had some absolute star players. Speaker 1 Absolutely correct. So provincial the medallist? Well, Mark Pretain again from Somerville 2. Speaker 2 In a row. Speaker 1 So Somerville Roundabout then used to finish sixth out of 12, consistently pretend to get wickets and runs every year he'd get his nearly 400 runs and 30 plus wickets and got got the medal. Jono made 394 runs and Tony Stocker 36 wickets. They weren't the only wicket takers but they were two of the notable ones. So Kringle get the flag and and runs and wickets. Kid went to the Mornington side. So and we mentioned relegated one year up, bang straight down. Speaker 2 So we move on to district in 8687 yes, and Baxter 153. This is a really interesting game, this one, it's a. Speaker 1 Fantastic game. Speaker 2 I think we're going to do a case study on let's. Speaker 1 Do it. Let's do a make this a featured match. So let's let's OK, so let's start off with Ellen Davis and Colin bows were the umpires, Peter. So boesy, after all the other bits and pieces you did around the place. See there. I think I'll umpire it for a few years, which he did and got the got the number 2 game there. The the district final again over 4 days. All right, so Frank Sinise bat and they get up to 204, which is pretty solid effort. Guys get starts. Mark Hale was probably the key. He got 61 not out. Speaker 2 That's coming in at #8 yes, that was a probably got him to a competitive score. Speaker 1 So he yeah, you're right. He got in at 7 for 1:24 and then they took it up to 204. And I can point out that my good mate Powell Cooper added one run to those before he ran himself out. They still had out. There's only 61 overs. They had overs to spare there. Could have scratched a few more if if Pinky could run a couple of extra extra runs. Who has got some below Paul Billington 37 and Mark Hooper was captain. It's Bob's son. Slow bowler, batted first drop. He made 24. Now the bowling Mark Grange for for Baxter got 4 for 72 off 22. Heck, a lot of wickets at this stage. He also got the medal that year. We we might as well mentioned Wayne Schultz did a bit of bowling. Rob Harvey nothing to do with the footballer. Mark Lennon got a wicket. There's a few a few guys. Andrew Warren also got a wicket one for 32 of 12 so 204. They Chase and Baxter all out for 153 P Yes, Mick Scales makes 61 not out just as well. He was here because from 7 for 90 threes grounds that up to 153. Little bit of support from Freddie Warmsley, who we've talked about before. The man who ran Mitre 10 for a while in Frankston. He made 32. Graham Harvey 20, but not much else in in the way. Let's have a look at who got run. Stephen Wade 5 for 57 and Mick Hooper 5 for 47. So showers that are so far over the first weekend should have been 150 overs. They'd completed 1/24. So you sort of thought, OK, there's still plenty of overs left in this game because the 226 was the possible Frank. Frank Sinise had a lead of 51. Then no bat again. Pete and Peter Wrigley gets 45, not a lot else. Billington 28 run out. Pinky gets 6. Not out this time, up to 131, so they've been very disappointed. Had a lead of 51. Scrounged up 131 in the second innings. Mark Grange, 5 for 44 and Andrew Warren, 4 for 34 now. Speaker 2 If my maths is correct, that's a total of 9 wickets for the match for Mark Grange. Correct match winner. That's why you got the the middle. Speaker 1 That's why you end up with the middle, all right? So 44 overs to play and they lead by 182. So you either get them out or you restrict them. Let's see what happens with Baxter's second innings. So they open up with Richard Mucker and and Fred Walmsley. Fred Walmsley, they both made 20s Norm Fraser gets 20, Graham Harvey 39. In the end it was Mick Scales again. He got the 61 not out in the first innings, makes 46 with four overs to spare. They get the run 7 down. Reverse outright and Stephen Wade another 3 wickets and Hooper another two wickets and Johnny Jovic gets a wicket too. Good old John. But yeah, they so they get their seven down the second innings. Reverse outright, 4 overs to spare and backs to go up and Frank Sinise from a great position wallow into district. They never actually get to go up the Provincial ever so and I'm pretty sure they see that as a lost opportunity, right? Paul Tracy made 370 runs that year and Long Island was the team who were relegated. So they've only been up for a couple of years and they got relegated. We're talking about 19867. Speaker 2 Interesting looking at teams like Peninsula, Old Boys, Long Island, Yep, who are right up there and you know have been in provincial for a long time and primarily. Speaker 1 And battled to to to get out and then stay at a sub district. They often went up and down, up and down, a little bit of yo yo during the 80s. Speaker 2 The point I'm trying to make here is some of these clubs have done the hard. Speaker 1 Yards, yes, they've worked hard and they've. Speaker 2 Progressed up to the highest level. Speaker 1 And they they probably realise how tough it is and and you know, work hard. So the sub districts Miraduc played Dromana. So Dromana got relegated the previous year and got the playoff in the sub district final Miraduc 9 for 299. Darren Walker, 9092 Yeah, we're. Speaker 2 Going to look at another scorecard later on. Yes, with Darren Walker, yes, it's an unbelievable score. He does put that on hold, just for a moment. Speaker 1 Very good in finals Darren and he also played a couple of couple of seasons at Bonio and had a reasonable year then too. Russell Dixon 6 for 62 We and. Speaker 2 Again, a very consistent wicket taker. Yes, all of his numbers. Yes, very, very good bowling. Speaker 1 And in that same year he got 48 wickets, Neil Davidson over 400 runs and Marcus Wyatt get Gareth's older brother. He also made four. In fact they both made the same #417 runs. Provincial, District, and Sub-District Finals 1987-88 So that was 198687 coming into 87. Eight Peter Meadowliser end up putting a team in the sub district, so their third side was sub. It was actually when you look at the way the teams were and they had a lot of depth in those days. They had a lot of very, very good players like Johnny Lyle for instance, playing sub district and it was a very strong side. French Island went down to sub E twos so they were a bit light on some use very light on for players as we know hard for them. So 8788 let's look at the what a game this was Oh the the grand final yes absolutely right. Well, you were there again. I umpired that one, yeah. Speaker 2 Along with Jeff Northfield. Speaker 1 With northers correct, Heather Hill batted first. They got 6 for 365. Now Mark Martin came in on the on the Sunday and made 100 night out, 106 night out. He had about 30 6 overs to do it in and just tee it off QE bowled all day both days, all weekend. 56 overs from his end, 4 for 150. Now whether he he probably think he did a great job but only just, you'd say Skebs Martin gets 137 for Heather Hill when when they come up, Jones gets 96 and Hilly gets 57. Johnny Hilly's early on there. Speaker 2 Just want to highlight scabs there. That 150, he actually faced 391 balls. Speaker 1 Yep. Now I don't know what I've said this wrong, but bell narrowing were the ones who batted first made 364. It was bell narrowing playing Heath Hill. So yes, 6 for 365. So they did that comfortably. We talked about the some of the comfortable run chasers. That's a pretty impressive 1 I reckon. 6 for 365 and scabs after being the best fielder in the first half of the game was clearly the best bat 137. Speaker 2 Just another name for Bell nearing Dougie Rowland mate 83 as well. Yep, a fabulous cricketer over a long. Speaker 1 Period of time sensational. He's the one that they they name their award best player after Doug and quite rightly too. Left handed batsman, very good Batman could always work the ball into into a gap on either side of the wicket. So yeah, chasing, chasing those runs and Bel Airing's frustration in the finals, well, they just kept on getting runners, runners up all the time. And yeah, a victory to head there on that was their first provincial flag. And Huey playing what, his third team, third team in a row virtually. He kept moving around in those days as, as we well know, the medalist. Speaker 2 Well, Steven Johnson from Pines, now he'd. Speaker 1 Come back to Pines only one year at Mornington Previous. Speaker 2 Year, only one year at Mornington, so he's back at Pines. Johno won the medal. The runs Hilly from Heatherhill. How about this one? 924, Yeah. And Dougie Rowland, 530. Second. Yeah. Jono. Jono wickets 52. Speaker 1 Yeah, it is. And relegation, I think I mentioned the start Baxter. So they gone up, down, up, down in these these three years. Red Hill, let's look at district Turku get get relegated. Red Hill played YCW in the final. Why see Better first made 181. Red Hill had had Ian Aiken playing from then. He played a little bit of Red Hill and a fair bit of rye. He took 5 for 55. Frank De Gregorio opening up 65 not out, battered through, steered them through. Ian Rossbro made 77 the 8418. Speaker 2 2 The dad of Brad Correct Brad. A terrific cricketer in his own right. Yep. Ian Rossbro, 77. Speaker 1 Yeah, he played a couple of clubs. He played at Rosebud as well for a few years, but played at Barnier for a couple of years. Red Hill at this stage and yeah, a fine 77 a a victory to Red Hill the medallists. Speaker 2 The medallists, yeah, district in district. Kevin Prendergast, a very familiar name, it is. Spent a long time on, I think it was Frankston Council. Speaker 1 Yeah, and he was in instigator one of Frankston Peninsula for getting them into district cricket and stuck with them for a while. Speaker 2 And the medallists? Speaker 1 Yeah, that was that was him, Kevin on that one. Johno in in in the provincial and for sub district Camp Park, Dougie Hamilton been a real character for Carom Downs got 32 wickets. Andrew Brown 466 runs for in in district for for Mount Martha. Then I'm pretty sure he's at Mount Martha that year and the subbies now I mentioned that Mayor Liza put aside in they met, they got 305 chasing Long Island, a score of 270. Then it got called off, so John Lyle making 70. Adam Splatter didn't play as many years at mountleiser, but he got 65. Gordon McLeod for Long Island 6 for 92 was a stalwart there but a a winter mountleiser in the in the subbies. Speaker 2 And let's let's give Peter Connell, one of Long Island's favourite sons, a bit of a pat on the back. He got 51 as well. He did. So the medallists, sorry, the the runs you just said Cam Park and also Rob Martin from Long Island got 500 and two runs. Speaker 1 He got 500. That's right. So now this was an interesting one because we mentioned Medallizer won it, but Long Island get promoted up in it because man, Liza can't they can't play district and provincial. So they give it to the runners up Long Island get their opportunity and they they went up right. Celebrating the Leading Run-Scorers of the Decade Let's just pause for the moment. Look at the the rest of those years in in a little while. But we've we've got the the perform the bat batsman now. You had a a complete list of the top 10 somewhere, Peter. I have, yeah. Speaker 2 Shall we do that at the end of the Oh I? Speaker 1 Was hoping we'd do it now, but if we're not quite ready that's alright. No, we've got it there. Absolutely beautiful. So let's go through the the batting and I've got a couple of comments to make about some of them as on the way through. Speaker 2 I've actually ordered the the batsman. Yep, during the whole decade, 85 to 94, that's what you want me to do? Speaker 1 Yeah, go for it, Go for it. Speaker 2 Yeah. So on top, no surprise, we had Robbie Bedford with 5179. Speaker 1 Now he got four 4900 in in the last eight seasons because he's just a young fella early on. Yep. So eight seasons. He got most of those 5000 runs. Speaker 2 So there were there were two batsmen well and truly in front. We had Robbie Bedford and just behind him on 5112 runs is John C Hilly. Yep, all right underneath that Stella Jackson, 3943. Speaker 1 Yeah, 9 full seasons he. Speaker 2 Played Yep, Darren Walker, 3903. Speaker 1 Including 137. Oh no, that was Darren Walker. Sorry. Mirror Duck and Mount Martha. He played. Yep. Apologies. Yep. Speaker 2 Gary Cooper, who I know you're a big fan of, Neil 3428. Speaker 1 He did that in six seasons. Yep, he had 11 centuries and he was also selected in the game to play against Sri Lanka, which he opened up in. Speaker 2 Dave Martin scabs. Yep, absolutely. Bringing in a couple of big games in grand finals which we've mentioned 3404. Speaker 1 Yep, including that century that we mentioned just before. Yes. Speaker 2 Gavin Simes and I Chalk is a big fan of Gav 3237. Speaker 1 I think I think Choco loves all the Simes because there's one down at Frank at Flinders as well. Speaker 2 We got Dougie Roland in 8th place 3216. We've already mentioned his achievements. Great cricketer for Balnari. Yep. Peter Bedford Bedford's Two of Them in the top ten, 3187 and Damian Holmes 3178, rounds out the top 10. Analysing the Most Dominant Wicket-Takers All right, now less of the bowlers. We've got the bowlers there too. I have and. And is Grangy up the top? Look, you got 2 medals. Speaker 2 He he did and he's clearly on top. OK, like what a bowler. Mark Grange, number one for the decade, 373 wickets equal second. Brick Whelan and Tony Stocker both on 294. Yep. Gary Martin, elite bowler? Yes, as we found out him. He's dead. Bill. Yep, and Brent's still playing. Correct, but Gary got 270 for the decade. Speaker 1 And that was only nine seasons that he played. You gotta remember that too, so it makes it a bit more impressive. Speaker 2 Important to qualify that it is, you know, like some didn't play the full. Speaker 1 Decade. No, that's right. Speaker 2 Incredibly well Now here's here's a name. I'm I'm hearing the best set of hands on the Peninsula and there's been some good sets behind the behind the wickets over the years but Jeff called it 261. Speaker 1 Yeah, there is dismissals, that's right. And he also got a 2400 runs in nine seasons. Be interesting because I want to mention actually while we're mentioning we'll get back to the bowls. Peter Bedford, he had, he had 200 dismissals and 3200 runs. So quite clearly though at the top 2 keepers and it'll be an interesting discussion for the teams who who selected that's. Speaker 2 Almost a programme on itself. Speaker 1 Well, it is, yeah. A. Speaker 2 Bit of a focus on on keepers. Yeah, some real good ones. Robbie Jackson, 246 wickets. Speaker 1 Again, nine years. Speaker 2 Yep, Tony Blake played at Somerville and I think prior to that was Heather Hill. Speaker 1 Yeah, it started off life at at Pint. Speaker 2 OK, pints. OK, he had 228 First name Young. Speaker 1 From Heather Hills. Oh Graham. Yeah, yeah. Left another left armour. Speaker 2 Yeah, 222nd 7. Sorry, Terry Doyle, 210. Speaker 1 Six seasons only for for doily, too. Speaker 2 Yep, and Craig Birch, 208 Rams out the top 10. Speaker 1 Now I want to mention another person who in four years took 161 wickets but didn't obviously even play all the way through, but Paul Hartle. Wow, 4 wickets for two, four years for 161. So sometimes when you get that perspective, it, it just adds to it because he's, oh, he's a long, long way short of the others, but not necessarily because some people, whether or not you were starred in a particular decade depends on how what age you were when you started in that decade. Grand Finals and 1988 Country Week Success Now 198889, I know you've got something on the Country Week, but I might just go through 89, 8889 first and then you can mention the Country Week, don't you? Speaker 2 Want to do that at the end it's up. Speaker 1 To you, No, no, we'll do it as we go, otherwise we get confused, I reckon. I mean, we're confused enough as it is. All right. So 8889 Pines chasing This is the grand final chasing Keringal's score of 289 with Robbie Bedford 100. They and Pines get their seven for 290. Steve Johnson and Jack Norris get 136 runs for the 6th wicket. And that was going back to when in in this particular year most of they had 90% of their bowling. This year Pines left armours Steve Johnson, Rob Jackson and Jack Norris and occasionally a few other blokes would bowl a little bit. But they they got that big partnership between Jack, which is actually Andrew Norris's his real name 136 partnership. They get up chasing 289 against Caringal so. We talked about Blakey before he got 32 playing at Somerville, see if it'd get relegated in that year. Peter District Carom Downs played Boneo and Russell Blackburn was playing for carrying downs 8 for 271. They were Russell Blackburn gets 54. But this is an interesting one on the on the Sunday they're sort of batting along and about 6:10 went off for light and and a bit of a drizzle and the umpires made and go back on a bit later and big Rob Burns gets 3 wickets on the Sunday or that Hardwick and hand so fading. Speaker 2 Light. Speaker 1 Yes, and then and then I thought, oh it is dark, we better call it off. So what that meant really is that Carrom Downs end up winning by 99 Cos Bonio were out 172 and Burns end up with five 479. Rob Burns 1. You know, lots of Burns is around so good win to Carrom Downs. And then Murdoch get relegated in district and in sub district Crib Point make 9 for 246 compulsory close so 113 overs. Peter yes. So it's a grind all the way. Player Movements and Grand Final Thrillers 1989-90 Yeah, I was a selector that year, I think. OK, All right, let's look at 198990. Barney McCauley goes from Seaford to Carrum Downs, so there are a few shifts around. Darren Walker pops into Mount Martha. This particular year went from Muraduck to Mount Martha. So couple of little shuffles around and you'll you'll notice these from you from time to time. But in so let's look at provincial Denis Gary from radio picks up the middle. Doug Rollins 591 runs, Stella 666 runs, Hilly 607 runs and Bedford 542 runs. So a lot of runs being scored that year, Della and the relegation was Somerville dead sides beat. No, it's all right. No. Speaker 2 Comment. Speaker 1 OK, right. But in the final Pines played Mount Eliza and one of the other people who changed was John Lillico. I can't imagine he came across the man Lizer as captain, like got him into coach and and just give a bit of incentive to the Pines boys. So Lillico bowled 30 overs and took three for 59. Pines 8 foot 7273. Couldn't get anyone, couldn't get him out. Mentalizer and reply made 209. Stewie Burrows 74 and Rob Jackson gets 4 for 70 or 43. So, you know, I think they've probably seen enough of Lilyco in the Nets and they they just said, well, he's a good bowl. We'll just keep him out and a good win there to Pine. So that means Pine's two in a row at this stage. Speaker 2 Yeah, we should throw in Steve Johnson. They got 4 for 58. So between Jackson and Johnson they got 8 wickets between them. How? Speaker 1 Unusual. It happened almost every week. Yes, all right. District medallist Jeff Slocum playing at Seaford. Remember, we talked about how what a sensational couple of years he had at Seaford. Baxter in the grand final playing YCW chasing 104 and Baximo 209. Grange for this game 4 for 24 in the 1st innings, 6 for 98 in the second innings. The only decent batting was from YC second innings when Paul Waterhouse made a tonne. Now a lot of people say, you know, Waterhouse was known for his bowling in his first 10 or 12 years. He was a batsman and and he made some handy runs for them as well. Speaker 2 Now if we reflect back to I think the previous year, or it might have been the one prior to that, Yep, Mark Range got 9 wickets in the final as well. Now he's got 10, so he's got 10. Yep, big game performer. Speaker 1 Absolutely. Cooper 700 runs that year for Boneo Hardall 654. I think it's YC then or a Doyle. 37 wickets and at Long Island relegated again. So up and down, up and down the sub district. Sorento playing touk Rook in the final and Sorento made 257. Dave Hyde gets a century for Sorento 2174, Brad Morgan getting 5 wickets and captain Wayne Foster who got the medal of the year before he made 64. Russell Dixon from Muraduk gets the medal and I think he had a couple over the years, so 89. So as Pines get their second, Wicked Baxter gets promoted and Sorrento get out of Sub district for a while. Pines' Third Win and Darren Walker's Epic Century All right, let's go back to let's go to 90 and 91. Peter Pines get their third win in a row and Darren Walker returns to the Ducks and we'll find out a little bit about that in a second. All right, let's start off with the medalist. Peter Buchanan from Mornington gets the provincial Nick Johnson at Mount Martha. Then he gets back to Mornington later, but he got the medal from Mount Martha. Dave Hastings from Long Island gets the sub district medal couple of Robbie Jackson gets 40 wickets that year for in provincial, Russell Dixon 36. Darren Walker made nearly 700 runs that year. Hastings get relegated from provincial and district, Rosebud get relegated. All right, so let's look at the final. Pines defeated Heatherhill and this is 1 you mentioned because there was a bloke called Jackson, Rob Jackson 9 for 108. Not a bad effort from Jacko at. Speaker 2 Off a lazy 55 overs yes so QE and him had a little bit to talk about. They both bowled 55 overs in the grand final. I. Speaker 1 Hope they didn't bowl from the try to get bowl from the same end, because I know who'd win the battle. All right, so Pines that's their third in a row. Mount Martha played YCYCW in the district won a bit tighter this one Mount Martha 247 and Heather Matthews gets 41 in that game and for YCW 214 and Joey Lane made 54 but got run out and this will go down as we're out for at Y4 YCW. But slug of Slocum's final game and and 64 correct. And he he they lost the the grand final to to Mount Martha. Who else we got? Oh we got the Murdoch one. This is the one you were sort of talking about Long Island Better first here, Pete. Speaker 2 Well. Speaker 1 Against Miradac. Speaker 2 They got 336. Yeah, there's some massive score of. Speaker 1 This is improved. Speaker 2 Grand final performances here you've got Peter Connell, who we mentioned before opened up on 158. Speaker 1 And and he kept used to get him in finals. He's big in finals. Speaker 2 And so therefore, Miradac had the daunting challenge of trying to get 337 to win the game. Yeah, and they saluted. They ended up getting 8 for 340. Speaker 1 And who got most of them? Speaker 2 Well, Darren Walker, Neil, he's got a magnificent 201 not out in a grand final. Yeah, Can you believe that? And so Long Island weren't quite good enough. They weren't able to defend that 336 and Murdoch 8 for 340. Speaker 1 Saluted the judge. Wow, amazing effort. Reflecting on Jeff Slocum's Illustrious Career So let's we'll get the last couple of seasons ago in a moment, but let's just look at a couple of things that in the decade 85TO8689495 which we're on. So Jeff Slocan retires, this is a big one. We just mentioned that was virtually his last game. He might have played another one or two at YC but that's all. So he got 22000 runs and 120 wickets in five seasons at Hastings YCW, but did some of his big work at time as well and was one of the top run scores as we mentioned each on 20 years, 2 decades getting over 5000 each time and over 300 wickets in a one year, 393 wickets. So sensational effort. Speaker 2 Has to be in the equation for. Speaker 1 Oh, the team of the 50 years that they have, Absolutely and debatably. Speaker 2 Put it out there. Yeah, His numbers tell me that he's just about as good as anyone that ever played in the competition. Speaker 1 I'd have. I'd have to agree with you too. Jeff seeks he play. He he basically retired in this decade. Laurie Slocum also stepped down in in in in this decade. Five-Way Tie for Medallists and Country Week Wins So coming into 9192, and this is another one you've got the Country Week team on. But the Bombers and Frankston RSL joined sub district. So they actually had 12 teams in sub district, which they occasionally did, but not very often. John Hilly went down to Flinders and Phil Jeffries went to Main Ridge. So there are a few a few other changes which happened. Let's go to the 9190. So I'll just mention some of these and you can do the Country Week teams, Pete. But the medalist for provincial, Peter Buchanan, that's two for him. And this is the very first time it happened in district. There was a tie and they had five, 1-2, yeah, five names. So Craig Carroll's from Boneo, who only a nickname for Craig Carrolls was the show bag. He was a real, real good character. Batting, bowling, Les PIM from Delicum Park, Steve Daniels from Hastings, Wayne O'Neill from Rye and John Wilson from Sorrento. They they all tied and you don't often get a five way tie. You can occasionally get a 2. Speaker 2 Interesting nickname, that showbag. I'm probably thinking you don't know what you're going to get. Speaker 1 No, no, it wasn't a little bit. Well, I think you'd have to ask Gary Cooper, who was the man who gave nicknames out. It's also in in in. Let me see the sub district. Phil Jeffrey going over to Mainridge got got the medal that particular year. Bucky ended up Buchanan, we mentioned he got the medal. He got 786 runs and 20 wickets that year. Stella a quiet that's Steve Jackson for those who aren't sure, 616 runs in district. Hardwell got 31 wickets. John Hilly got when he went, I mentioned he went to Flinders, 711 runs for Flinders and he eventually goes back but he certainly did their did their work. So provincial Mount Martha get relegated one season they were up bang straight down. Rye got relegated to district and pretty much stayed down for a long time since that point. OK, let's look at the grand final, Keringal playing Mornington and if there were grumbles about the time when Mornington just hung on and got the flag because they finished on top in the rain, they won this 1153 despite Stock having six wickets. Bedford made 42 as you might expect Rob Bedford but Morton were all out for 122 and his stalker Tony Stocker 43. So he gets 6 wickets and 43 batting the bat #9 with Tony normally batted and that just wasn't good enough because Terry Doyle was at Cringall this year. Craig Simons also at Cringall. They got 4 wickets each and tore through Mornington for 122 and YCW in a second. And then we've got seconds. I should say. District firsts. YCW batted first, 254. The fellow called Craig Birch makes 69. Les PIM tried his hard out four for 49 but 254 was enough for Delacom who only made 207. Peter Campbell who was looking after them that year. Very good bat 57. And in the sub district, Long Island chasing Flinders score of 118. Remember they had Hilly there, they got Flinders out for 118 and Cam Park and Brian McHugh, he bobs up everywhere with us and he was a Long Island. Then get 4 wickets each. So chasing that 118 they make one for 157 and Peter Connell 87 not out when the game was game was called off. So we talked about some players being really good in finals. That's another example. Connell, he's he just dominated those finals and Long Island get promoted now. Peter, you've got the Country Week squad there, I think for this year, 9192. Speaker 2 I have we we skipped over the previous one too because they won in 88. Yep, I also won in 1990 so I'll just go back a step. Speaker 1 Yeah, sure. Do that. I'll tell. Speaker 2 New players have come in, oh young Bridgie, yes, Cavalry retirements and you know, some elite cricketers in modern times who just starting their careers then actually having an impact over you, Neil. Mornington vs Baden Powell and Bryce McGain's Innings OK, let's look at 9293 and Mointon Diggers end up fielding a second team. They really did that. So they had a team in the Subbie Subbie twos, which was, as I said, quite unusual. So we're going to have a featured game which we'll look at in a second where Moynton played Baden Powell 9293. But the medalist, Tony Stocker, remember that he he carried them on his shoulders in the final and they lost. But he picked up the medal the next year in in districts. So I'll just whip through this. OK. Yeah, yeah. Paul Hartl, Seaford, he got 51 wickets and 450 runs that year. And Brett Whelan playing at Pearce Dale won the sub district medal. Yes, Pete, you're saying I was? Speaker 2 Yeah, just getting back the the Mornington Baden Pell game, which we actually haven't talked about yet. Speaker 1 No, we'll hang on to that one for a second if we can. Yeah. So relegation was Carom Downs who had Four Seasons up in Provincial and Sorrento in district. So geez, I just couldn't hang on back back in those days. And far cry from where they are now. Brett Brett Ryan got 41 wickets for Boneo that year in the district and Whelan Brett Whelan who got the medal at Peersdale got 48 wickets in the Sub East. OK, let let's quickly look at the grand finals. I'll start, we'll work up the other way. Sub districts Flinders 296 defeated Sky 94. So pretty comprehensive. Terry Calf gets 100 Chris Monday, 48. Speaker 2 Shane Clark from Sky got 5 for 84 now would that Shane Clark be the umpire I wonder? Speaker 1 I think you think he could be right. I think he could be right. Speaker 2 Don't know anyway and district. Speaker 1 Delicum Park 161 defeated Seaford 55, Les PIM 8 for 21. Speaker 2 And four for 82 and 12/12 for the game 12. Speaker 1 For the game, second innings, Delicum batted again and this time Chico got 87 not out in the second innings. You remember that we had talks about him, how he was just a young fella at the time and was this fine? Or when he really stepped up, got a 52 in the first innings, an 87 not out and and they realise that no, he's he's better in the big games and he's going to be very good for them. So a a window Delicum Park. OK, I suppose we should look at this morning game. It's a pretty interesting one. Mornington play against Baden Powell and I've got it here in front of me, but in this? Speaker 2 Game. Yep, we had the start of a player who went on to play for Australia. But correct, you discussed that one. Speaker 1 Yes, absolutely. So we'll start off with Baden Powell having a umpires John Lillico, how about that? I mean a couple of years ago he's playing, now he's in in in country week squad and now he comes in to umpire the provincial final with Robbie Osborne. Speaker 2 There would have been a few laughs though. Does the bowls hit the bowling crease? Were there or? Speaker 1 Not they'd all they'd all know and and that that have that have well known JL by this point. There wouldn't be anything going on or anything. So let's let's look at who Baden Pearl had. They had Jeremy Lebroy. We know this Lebroy name. There's a Tom at the moment with the old boys and Shane McComb. They open up, he makes 45. McComb. Maddie died and a quality young fellow ended up playing Frankston Peninsula after this year. He makes 44 at first drop. A lot of other batsmen just sort of fell, fell away apart from the captain, Paul Tracy, who made 43. But they also had Nigel Roy was playing as well. Jeremy's brother Ian Walsh, Justin crossed, Fraser Brown. That was some interesting names there for Baden Powell and they make 228, make a reasonable fist of it. Peter Buchanan 4 for 56, Stocker 3 for 72 off 37 overs and Bryce Mcgain 2 for 34 of 18. Another bloke, Mick Mccleary, played a bit of cricket around 10 overs, none for 30 I think. Speaker 2 Mick ended up having a fairly long career at Prahran. Speaker 1 He went, he went to Prahran. What was district cricket that yes, yes indeed. Speaker 2 So that that play that we're alluding to the plate for Australia, was Bryce correct? He played one Test for Australia and I'd say that's probably would have been like early, maybe 20, not too old, just before he went to a high level. Speaker 1 Yeah, just a younger fellow. You're right. So chasing that score of 2 to 8, Mornington batting first, Paul Filippone and Paul Brown opened up, but they were three for 22 very early on. Benny Lucas, also out, became secretary of the club at one point. Peter Buchanan, the skipper hung around for a while, makes 43. Bit of support from Keith Burdette, 25 Jeff Cold at 20 and a wicket. Where are we? Mclear out for 3:00. So at this stage there's seven for 128. Chasing, as we said, 228, I need 100, need 101. Bryce Mcgahn is there, and Nick Johnson has come across from Mount Martha. Those two batted through and made 100. Speaker 2 Partnership got them over the line. Speaker 1 Got them over the line. Bryce Mcgahn gets 58 not out of 239 balls and Nick Johnson 52 of 152. So they they mixed up, tried all the balls they had Bondy getting one for 83 of 28 overs, Fraser Brown 2 for 55 off 19, Maddie Dyton 2 for 24 off 17, Justin Cross 2 for 30 off 14. So good tight bowling. But they they couldn't get him out. And legend has it that Bryce Mcgahn and Nick Johnson, when they went to the celebrations at night, by midnight they were still wearing their whites and had their pads still on in that 100 partnership. Speaker 2 That's that's more than reasonable, I would have thought. Long Island's Star Signings and Season Highlights All right. So I think a couple of a couple of seasons to to go here and Rob and Peter Bedford go to Long Island with Brian McHugh, Graham Voss and Steve Johnson. So Long Island are in district. Speaker 2 That is what you call a recruiting coup. Speaker 1 It is. And I, I think they got Kiwi first and he talked the others into it. Now you recall that he they'd sort of sort of left Karengel and history would tell us that that Keringal didn't last a great deal long after that and really fell, fell in a bit of a hole and and and have disappeared, which is quite sad. Of course, Mark Grange went to Mount Martha this particular year. All right, let's look at who won medals. Paul Lacey from Mount Eliza who was a brother of David Lacey who probably entertaining character as we all know Paul Lacey was very classy batten bowler. Shane Wilson won district playing for Mount Martha. Craig Whelan for Rye so lots of Whelan's get up get wickets in this and and medals in the subbies. Not always related but this one was Craig Whelan who was at Rye. Graham Young, you mentioned him before, he got 40 wickets that year for Heatherhill. Brett Whelan actually got 47. We could say Craig Whelan wins the medal. Brett Whelan appears though, gets 47 wickets. And let's look at what happened in Provincial. So not long after they got three in a row, points get relegated. I suppose once they'd lost Johno and a few other people stopped for a year and Jacko went over to Carom Downs at one point and all of a sudden they they weren't able to to sustain it. So Mornington defeating Mount Eliza in in the provincial 204 Mornington mate Keith Burdett getting 71. I think that was his best grand final score defeating Mount Eliza 141 sort of went into the second innings but fizzled out a little bit there. So good confident win there to Mornington. And as I said, Pines relegated district Peter Long Island chasing 203. Oh, sorry, no chasing Mount Martha's 199 get 9 for 203. Scramble, scramble over the line with that high quality team. They had Bedfords and McHugh and Vos and Jono. They got there over over man last the time. Speaker 2 So Robbie Bedford in that innings for Long Island, got a start, 46, Yeah, unlike him, not to keep going. Speaker 1 Well, that's right. He made 770 that year for them and peer style won the won the sub district and got promoted. Graham Yellop's Unforgettable Grand Final Performance So we're we're now coming up to 9495, the last year of this third decade. And Rob Jackson, as I hinted, went over to carom Downs at at this point he got he only played five games and got 26 wickets for them. Reggie Chadwick also in the sub district. He he was at Rye 551 runs. Let's look at who won the medals. Darren Groves at Sorrento in the sub district. Dougie Loudon from Peersdale who's a tear tear away fast bowler and harder things got the more he tried and tried and tried. Dougie medalist Graham Young from Heather Hill. So he strung a couple of very good years together. The the Bedford boys put made 12150 runs between them this year. Pete incredible effort and John Hilly 646 coming back so caring will get relegated and as I said from there on they just plummeted sadly. Moynton in the final of the provincial 179. Jeff Cold of 62 and they defeated Long Island with that very strong side. We got 147 Bedford and both both get 40 in that game and where else we got we got district. This is this is the one we want to give a bit of detail about Pines and Mount Martha There's. Speaker 2 Actually a stand out performance in this one, which you'll outline in a minute. But yeah, an elite century. But go ahead, Neil. Speaker 1 All right, in fact, there's a couple of them yeah, one in a winning team and one in the in the not winning team. So Mount Martha, they played this one at Tyre and I remember seeing the second half of this game because the the more into Long Island game wrapped up reasonably early. As I mentioned, Mount Martha batting end up to 68 is a century to Darren Ablot and there's 58 to Chris Holcomb who opened the batting for them. Mark Grange who was captain was 26 not out but they end up 9 for two and why it's got overs bowled here and it must be a mistake. 105 I'm pretty sure they went to 113 but anyway 268 and for 9A fellow called Yellop, Graham Yellop bowled 30 overs and got 3 for 27. Stevie Vaughan 2 for 83. Paul Bradley and Andrew MacDonald bowled a little bit for them as well, and in reply this is interesting on pine. So they're chasing decent score, feet 268 it is, and at one stage they were four for 31. They'd lost Chris Leda, Brett Hudson, Trevor Roberts and Stella Jackson all out. So who was left? Well, Paul Bradley batted at 5. He came in and dug in, made it handy 50. There was another bloke who really dug in, the captain Graham Yelp made 125 knot out and steered them home 9 down with a little bit help from Kevin Sutton who made 21 and Steve Vaughan end up six knot out at the time. So they got there with just a few hours ago. 9 down despite the bowling of Shane Wilson, Darren Ablett, Mark Grange, Dave Sands and Paul. Guys, there's some handy bowling there but no one can get could get a Yelp out and I can remember watching it. They tried everything but everything was in the middle of the bat. He and he just said such incredible, what you'd expect from a Test quality Test player, incredible concentration, steered them home and got their nine down with a couple of overs to spare. Fantastic, I reckon. Speaker 2 Well, amazing. Yelp 125 and three for 37 were those medium paces. Yeah. Speaker 1 And 33 for 37 off 30 as well, which is the other bit. So he just knew how to wear wear those games down. Speaker 2 So there's one more game to go in 9495. Nil. Yeah. Sub district? Yep. Main Ridge against Carrum Downs. Speaker 1 Yep, and Carrum Downs better. 1st May 220 There's skipper Sean Nogara made 65. Scotty Miller from Main Ridge 5 for 53 very. Speaker 2 Highly rated Scotty Miller by people that I've talked to over the years. Speaker 1 Always. Well, well, the thing about Scott is he, he was always on in the game and, and just 100% concentration. Yeah. And he spoke a lot and you get and and he he always, he always kept talking and he always knew that he was there and thereabouts Main Ridge chasing that 220 did it 5 down 5 for 222 and it was the Wyatts. Marcus gets 43 and Gareth gets 96 and gets them over the line and A and a good victory. Speaker 2 Another marathon bowling performance for Carrum Downs. Yes. Robbie Jackson. Correct. 39 overs. Yep. 14 maidens 3 for 79. Speaker 1 Remember he only played five games that year. Darren Groves from Sorrento won the medal and then from then on went up to went up to Frankston. So so young. Loudon and Groves for the medalists in in 9495. People were almost there and just a couple of key points I reckon. Speaker 2 Well, Robbie Bedford, yeah, went on to make 1300 and six runs in two years at Long Island. Speaker 1 Not a bad effort. Speaker 2 Incredible. And also relegation there, Neil.
