Motivation for Performers

In this episode of the Being On Stage podcast, host Reggie Dawson shares a preview of the motivation module from the training program he is building for performers of all kinds. He explains that motivation, alongside inspiration and confidence, is one of the most crucial elements of being a performer, which is why it is covered first in the training. He emphasizes the importance of growth, noting that performers often focus so hard on a goal that they forget the continued growth that must follow it. Rehearsal, risk-taking, and always moving forward are essential parts of that growth. Dawson stresses that big goals must be broken down into bite-sized steps with a clear plan and small victories along the way. He also addresses the challenges every performer faces, including empty audiences, no pay, rejection, drama, and backstabbing, and urges listeners not to back down from their dreams despite these hardships. He encourages performers to push through difficult times for themselves and their future audiences, and invites listeners to email suggestions for the training program in exchange for a discount, or to book a one-on-one coaching call through his calendar.

Shut up, and sit down. Welcome to Being On Stage, the only podcast that gives you motivation, inspiration, and confidence to be better on stage. No matter how you entertain, sing, dance, band, comedian, public speaking, MC, drag, burlesque, performance art, or street performer, this is the show for you. Hey Rockstars, Reggie Dawson here, host of the Being On Stage podcast. You know, I've probably been talking about this training program that I'm building for, go on, two years now. And I don't know if you've ever built a training program. It's a lot of work. It's hard, it takes some time, you know. But I'm getting back into it, you know, and I've actually been focusing on the motivation aspect of it. And that's actually the first thing that's covered. You hear it when the podcast opens up, you know. Motivation, inspiration, and confidence to help you be better on stage. And then this whole slew of like, no matter how you entertain, sing, dance, drag, it goes on and on and on. Some of you probably have it memorized by now, probably better than I do. But I was looking over the motivation piece, and basically what I'm doing is I'm taking certain topics, motivation, inspiration, confidence, digital marketing, building your fan base, connecting with your audience, taking different topics. I'm kind of separating. I'm just separating them out. And motivation, I'm looking back at it, and I've got to tell you, the motivation piece is huge. And rightfully so. You know, the motivation, when you're a performer, staying motivated is probably one of the most crucial elements. Next to, of course, inspiration and confidence. Those are the three, like, most important elements of being. Being a performer, you know, keeping yourself motivated to move forward, keep growing and pushing and pushing. And even when times are tough and things get you down, you have to pick yourself back up and continue to push forward. And, you know, inspiration and confidence is kind of plays in that, you know, you have to stay inspired. You have to be inspired to become inspiring and confident. I mean, confidence is big. I've talked a lot about confidence, and I touch a lot on motivation as well. But I never call. I never call it out to just outright motivation and why motivation is important. So as I'm going through the training program that I am bound and determined to build, I'm thinking February, January, February. As I'm, you know, I'm writing the outline, and then I've got to record the videos, and then I've got to build the actual training and put it all together. But anyways, I'm looking over the motivation piece. And I've got to tell you. Man, this is probably like one, two, ten pages. Ten pages of just outline of why motivation is important for a performer and what you can do to stay motivated. And listen, if you want to contribute, if there's something specific that you think should be included in a training for performers, shoot me an email. Reggie at beingonstage.com. Shoot me an email. Let me know. Hey, if I use it, I will. Push this out to you at a huge discount when it's finally released. So if you contribute, I'll give you a discount on the training program. Like, I'm talking half off when it's finally released. So shoot me an email. Tell me what needs to be included in a training program built for performers. And sky's the limit. Like, that's pretty much where I'm drawing the line is I'm building a training for performers to, well, what I always say that I do. Turn your talent into a performance and turn that performance into an experience for your audience. Leave your legacy on stage. Turn them into fans and then continue that connection growing forward and explode going towards your dreams. So please contribute. Motivation, though. There's a reason motivation is the first item covered in training. And I'm kind of going to go. I'm actually going to give you a little preview in this episode of what the. Motivation piece is kind of covering. And one of the first topics that it tackles is the importance of growth. A lot of performers, they they work on a goal and they work so hard on this goal that they forget the growth that comes after you've accomplished your goal. And that's that's that always moving forward, always looking to do the next, always looking to do bigger, better, take more risks and grow. And that's that always moving forward, always looking to do the next, always looking to do the next, always looking to do bigger, better, take more risks and grow. Every show rehearsed, rehearsed, rehearsed, rehearsed, rehearsed. that's going to build you up and that's going to also keep you moving forward because through rehearsal you're going to learn what's going to work what's not going to work what's going to go well and where you may need to make some tweaks and that's also keeping you growing that's part of that growth remember i mentioned part of the growth is that musician getting in that that last minute rehearsal at 11 50 at night after he's worked all day just to make sure he's got this piece of a showdown. Like that's, that's growth and rehearsal is growth and you have to grow to hit your goals. And listen, if you don't have goals, you got to set goals. Uh, I talked last episode about why you need a coach. And one of the reasons you need to coach is when you set a goal, like, and I'm not talking about a general goal. I'm not talking like, Oh, I want to have my own album. Okay. How are you going to do that? And then what? And then, or, or before that, what do you need to do? And so, so you may have a goal to like create an album, or you may have a goal to audition for a show or a, you know, a talent show or for a performance group, but taking that goal and chopping it up into little bite-sized pieces so that you can take the steps to get there. That's going to be the key to your success. That's going to be the key to your growth is taking this huge goal that you have set out for. And working backwards from it and setting up a plan. You have to have a plan to accomplish your goals and you have to have small victories along the way. You know, just, just listen to the previous episode, why you need a coach. It's all in there. The last bit of this motivation I'm going to get on. And then I'm going to, then I'm going to tell you how we can work together a little bit more. Uh, it, before you even get this training, you can actually get some one-on-one training with me. Um, but the last, the last piece is, uh, and this is just the high level. This is like a highlight overview. Of what the motivation piece of the training is going to be kind of like testing out the waters a little bit, uh, challenges, you know, there there's going to be challenges facing challenges as a performer is all part of the journey. Um, I'm going to tell you something that, that hopefully you've realized by now, uh, the journey of a performer, any type of performer, anyone stepping on stage, anyone in the entertainment business, it's not easy. It's you're going to have, you're going to have nights when there's nobody there. You're going to have nights when you don't get paid. You're going to have people not return your calls, not return your emails. You're going to have flat out rejection. You're going to have disappointments. You're going to have this. I mean, you're going to have drama. You're going to have rough nights where you just can't seem to pull your stuff together. You're going to have an audience that doesn't pay attention to you. You're going to have, and this sounds terrible, but you're going to have, you're going to have people that are trying to be in your life just to be close to someone who they, who they admire just to be close to a quote unquote star. And I'm using quotes loosely because I mean, everybody's a star. Yes, you're a rock star, but the sense of it in which when people try to get close to that, it's a different, it's a different type of star. Um, you listen, you're going to have people that just stab you in the back and it's, it's, it's part of the journey and facing those challenges. So first of all, having those goals set up and, and taking them step by step, it's going to help you face the challenges. It's going to help you crush these challenges, knowing the importance of growth and, and really working towards that vision, that goal that you want, knowing the importance of growth, putting in the work is going to help you face the challenges as well. You have to go through the bullshit, pardon my language, to get to the dream. You're, you're going to come out strong. You're going to get there. You're going to get stronger on the other side. You're going to listen. You are going to go through hell as a performer. If you have not already, and I'm not trying to scare you. Listen, this is not meant to scare you off. Don't you dare back down from this, from, from this dream. And don't you dare press stop on this podcast just yet. You're going to go through all of this to become that strong, passionate performer that you envision. Like when you close your eyes and you picture yourself on stage, you're going to be a strong, passionate performer. You're going to be a strong, passionate performer. In five to 10 years to become that performer that you see, you have to go through the crap. You have to go through the Valley in order to get to the mountain. My friend, you're going to have these things that just, you got to push through. There's always, there's always going to be something I'm telling you right now. There's always from big, huge challenges like backstabbing and, and I have no bookings this month to rough nights and rejection. To drama and, and people stabbing you in the back to even, even something, you know, more, more personal, like a family loss or, or, you know, tough times in the family. When you're in that moment, those things are incredibly important. Don't get me wrong. And, and, and it can affect you in different ways. But when you reach that point where you haven't done anything in a day or a week or God forbid a month, there's comes a time when you have to tell yourself, regardless what is going in my life, going on in my life, I have to do this. I have to do this for me. And I have to do this for my future audience because they're waiting for you. My friend, your, your audience is just, they're just waiting for you to get out there and give them that experience that they crave. And that's why you're going to face these challenges down. You're going to grow and you're going to keep moving forward. And if you want to work together and you want a coach and you want someone that's going to help you along the way and help you build that goal, break it down into bite-sized pieces, hold you accountable and get you moving forward so that you can face those challenges.
