Live from Chicago for me, I'm at the bar studio studio, I've been here a couple of days, so a lot of accessories behind me here. Nate Tyson joins us again, football 3-0-1, Yahoo Sports, week 5. Nate, I don't even know how we can do this Sunday justice. This is one of the best Sundays ever. It felt like it was incredible matchups. Again, there's a lot of weeks where a lot of stuff is coming down to the wire, but this wasn't exactly great to watch for three plus hours. It's almost like you'd need three hours just to do week four of this kind of service. It was, I'm just kind of in awe of the products. For somebody who usually likes Saturday more than Sundays, this is an all-time Sunday, so I'll start wherever you want to start. Oh, well, that was the thing even when we go on the preview show, but that we do on Thursday, it was like, oh, this was pretty easy. A lot of juicy matchups, but then even non-Juicy matchups were entertaining. I don't think there's, oh, when NFL is hitting, it's just, it's so good. And that's the thing. So, you know, witching hour and all that, it was witching day through the last game, up until the last game, points galore. I got to yell at some refs, which is always fun. And then on top of it, just, I think you got good quarterback playing some matchups. You got good defensive playing some matchups as well, you got some sloppiness. So I could go a lot of different directions. I really do think the game that stood out to me the most, believe it or not, was probably the Cowboys Texans game, which was not a game. I previewed. But I also, they're the game that really, I actually should say, the game that stood out to me was Jaguars Bangles. Because I did think that was good. Let's start there. Yeah, let's start there. Because I think it's two good teams. Yeah. Because, you know, when the Jacksonville destroys New England, we turn it into New England topic, which is understandable. Because we'll do that. Hey, you made the Super Bowl. What the hell's wrong with this team? They continue to be problematic. You know, May's got all these issues. And we'll get to May's terrific Sunday here a little bit. But I want to start with that because Ted Wynn from the athletic who we love having on the show. He said after the weekend, he's like, that's the most complete team in the NFL. Is that accurate to you? Yeah. I've been nice. You kind of gauged in that too. I think so. I think that's where I'm going with. I've been really popping that question on a couple of people on my show. I was like, how do you power rink the AFC? How do you, and then they're always like, I don't know. What do you think? No, I think the Jags are the ones I feel best about. And though, there is a little bit of the whole line stuff still, and there's a little bit of the defensive firepower still. But they also have a nice high floor and they got really good coaches on both sides. And that's what's stuck me the most is the game planning. And then on top of it, they have a quarterback playing confident. And then they can turn to a run game that's different. Sorry, that a stray of this, a stray thought about all this or something that I think is so fascinating is Liam Cohn is a Sean McVeigh guy. And there's been a lot of talk about the 13 personnel and I've joked about that before. What I always thought that 13 personnel thing was the Rams were giving themselves the ability to pivot if they need to in the playoffs. And we've talked about this. This is what the Jaguars do so well is that they have different styles they can lead into. That's what that Nate Borkertcher pick on day two that everybody lost their minds about. Even though it was a great wide tight end class, everyone kind of forgot about that. But they went with that because they gave themselves, hey, if we have to get heavy, if we have to go multi tight ends, we can do it now legitimately. And the defense has to honor it. We have Chris Rodriguez and it's like, all right, Chris Rodriguez. But now with Basel Tutten, they have a different style of running back. They can lean into when they need to last. This Sunday was a Tutten game because let's run away from Dexter Lawrence. Let's get to the outside. He's got more speed. But when they need to hammer it home, they got Chris Rodriguez. They have multiple receivers now, even if the guy that is the most highly talented guy as far as draft pick, BTJ, is more of kind of a super role player. But now he's the speed guy. They got Jacobi Myers. They got Parker Washington. They got Brent Strange. They got all these guys. They got Josh Cameron, a rookie that's playing really well as a dirty work guy and now they're highlighting them a little bit. But why bring all this stuff up is it's not just the offense as a defense as well. It's like they changed their game plan every single week and that's the good stuff. And that's what you, those are the contenders. Now, the top of it, it's proofing the putting with the results and then they have a quarterback playing like a top five guy right now. Yeah, Trevor Lawrence has never touched the 60s in QBR. He's 70 right now and we've had some quarterbacks get off to some absurd starts. That's tonight's still not even the best in the NFL. There's a weird yards allowed thing in there. But when you look at their success against third down, the number two, they're giving up the second least amount of points. That's number two. All these are like number two to Minnesota, which is totally understandable. And when I watch them, I look at like, like I thought last night's game with Carolina and Gough was what was very telling in that, hey, this is the Scattered Report on Gough. You got to get him off of his spot. Just get him to move a little bit. He has a harder time getting lateral and then like getting himself parallel into the throw again. You know, it's like just something for him. The stuff we were raving about with Herbert, yet despite everybody's frustration with him. It's like, okay, these are some of the things that he can do. So it's not necessarily even how many QB hits or how many sacks, it's like, all right, are you moving this guy around a little bit? When I watch Jacksonville's edge guys, they just get off so quick that even if it's not a sack thing, you feel like it's disruptive, which is why sacks can be one of the dumbest stats to really hammer home, whether it's an edge guy or some of the, I was even looking at like Jamal Williams for the chargers. I was looking up his numbers last night because I forgot about him and just how nasty he was. It was like, yeah, that wasn't a sack guy at all. Like never. It's going to be a sack guy because he's lined up over the center. So, and I think the Travis Hunter part of this thing is starting to come together. It's just a nasty, like, I'm going to clean you out, hit, and I know that's just a small part of the film from the overall day, but it's, it feels like, hey, there's a reason why this guy was going to go as high as he was, even if the two way, you know, 50 snaps on both sides of the ball thing is never going to happen in the NFL. So there's a lot to like about this. It's actually kind of looking at it, too, you go, how long have they lost a Denver? Like how do you lose to that Denver offense in the second half? But we talked about that. It was one on one shots. Nick's had a really good stretch while I'll go going there a little bit. It seemed like they were changing up the approach. But I don't, I don't know who I would say is more complete than Jacksonville. Like who else is in the conversation of the top teams? It's, and even like the Ravens who I do like, I have more questions about their defense than I maybe thought I would, like they're up there. And then NFC, the heavy weights all look flawed as well. And this whole offseason, I've been saying the AFC's wide open, really, the NFL's wide open, like even more than we would expect, like all the heavy weights have a little bit of stuff that I'm still squinting at. So to me, chiefs, maybe, but then Taekwam Thornton, like, which is also part of the problem with the chiefs is that Taekwam Thornton is a very important player for them is that, like, his rearing and subtly head. They have, they're benching their left guard, Kingsley Sue Mataia, and being kind of coy about it. And just little things like that, even though I believe what the chiefs are doing. And they're formulas working, run game, my home's in the red zone, my home's on third down, and a defense like Armies and Thomas is showing up, George Karl Loftus is showing up, Chris Jones is Chris Jones, they're doing some cool stuff on defense as always respects, but then Clint Cubi, I kind of got him a little bit. So I also with the Jags, and I mentioned all the off and stuff, and you mentioned just the defensive stuff with those guys kind of bull rushing, anything camp now, the defense coordinator. [BLANK_AUDIO]
other guys played to their best ability. Even guys that like Jordan Lewis who their slot guy like Allison, he's played very well since he's got into Jacksonville. But there's stuff that too is even when they get beat on a play like you mentioned with the Broncos or even Burrow kind of starting to pepper him as the game went along. He makes it hard on them. He makes them do the hard thing over and over. Like yeah, you're gonna go to this spot, but we're gonna make you work for that. When I like the Gimmies aren't Gimmies against them. Like, and there's one kind of instance where they were bringing up what they call a double mug pressure with two guys in the A gap. And they were doing that with the bangles do is they'll walk the running back up. And if you notice, there's a couple times when they walk the running back up because they're trying to limit the space between like the blitzer and the running back. That's what that's kind of like the theory of that. Good offense has gone away from it, but I dig grass. But he walks them up. And then what the Jags did is they checked when the guy walks up and then they bail out because then you're wasting the running back and protection because he can't really release from that spot. Burrow, later in the game, they walked up, running back walks up and he waves off the run back goes, no, no, just release over here. Like, they're not gonna blitz there. And then they blitzed. And so it was kind of like, hey, we're gonna keep you one page behind. And even if Burrow makes the completion, he pre-snap, he has to work. That's a lot of work when you're throwing a ball 50 something times. Every time they're under center, they key in on tendencies. And that's why it's so important to get tendency breakers or to have more of a balance attack if you're shocking under center. Hey, if they're under center, that's Ron. All right. So we're gonna key in that angle's wrong game, did not get going that entire game. So they just do a lot of the really the right things, the good stuff. And I mean, I can go on and on about some of the red zone designs too. Like the once again, the red zone, you see some of the coolest stuff from this team with the Jaguars. I mean, like the BTJ touchdown was just like, hey, the bangles linebackers are bad and their safeties are bad. All right. Let's have the guy BTJ running over out from the slot because the linebackers won't find them. And like they're supposed to drop back and carry him. They're just like lost and no man's land. And they keyed on the linebackers the entire game. I think Trevor Lawrence went 16 of 18 throws between the numbers. If you look at his heat map, his target charts hilarious. It's just all just bunched into the middle because that's the weakness of the bangles. So which is key on it. Like, let's not overthink this. So I'm up there. They're at the worst. They're on the podium. But I've been really leaning into it. I think they're the class of the NFL right now. Okay. I feel like they deserve a lot of credit. And if you're going to like the Niners, you're like, okay, it's been awesome on offense. There's some good numbers there. Defensively, there's some not great numbers there defensively. But there's always going to be that, all right. You're the oldest roster. Like how many of these guys are you going to have there? Week 15, week 16, whatever. Like, like they have a they have an end of season matchup. I think in the preview, we were talking. I was like, how many Niners are going to be healthy for that game? Because it's like a real issue. It's great as they've looked. And we're going to give them their flowers for their incredible game against Denver there. But if you're trying to think of like the most complete teams, we've been raving about this Vikings defense the entire time. Are you kidding me? Like they could have lost that game to Miami because they can't do anything with Kyler Marin offense. TBD, I guess if you're trying to be nice about it. But between Trevor, between the defense, between the weapons, you know, this is, I don't think it's really any shame in blowing a game at Denver as bad as their offenses. Look, because great teams have gone up there and lost those kinds of games, even when Denver wasn't even that great. So that could be part of it. And on the Cincinnati side of it, I couldn't help but feel like in granite chase goes out early on the face mask and cushion thing. Higgins goes out a little bit later. But what we had liked about, hey, there's some awesome offensive line stuff that's happening. Hey, look at these six guys that they brought on on defense and look at the draft pick. And then it looked like the struggling Cincinnati version. Again, yesterday, Burrow's pick was terrible, which is strange to like, and he was mad at himself in a way where it was like, you didn't see the guy in the outside like, what are you? Rookie? The fourth down throw, probably because Higgins and Chase are out at that point, but to throw it underneath with when you got to get 10 and they get nine and sure it was kind of close. It was like you, you're really just on that because the bangles did it earlier. So again, knowing situation from their defenders like that because that Burrow loves that, the little angle route on on those long, third and longs and fourth and longs because that's a long, that's a long, that's a long, exactly that on that. I know. And especially in the red zone because then the defenders don't have to back up as much. So it's a little, it's tight. But no, I thought that was a great Jack's play too. I agree. It was kind of like, really, that's your, that's your play call for the, for the ball. Like I guess I give Burrow the benefit of the doubt that whatever else is going on in the routes like any news, he couldn't take a sack. It's like I get to get this out because there were plays where it reminded me of, well, they can't run the football again. They're, Burrow's getting heated up here a little bit. And yeah, I mean, you missed the, maybe the best wide receiver duo in the entire NFL. Like that's going to change some things for you offensively. But then I'm watching what Drake may is doing out there with his group going, you know, sometimes that's what's great about this game as teams will find a way as guys are down, left to right, whether it was the corners or Denver, the corners for Detroit going into that one. Excuse me, the corners for a Carolina in that game against Detroit or Detroit without their safety. Yeah, just Carolina. I have to die. So I have another Lawrence top. But I think I'm going to save it. I think I'm going to save it for later so we can get to more games here. Because this is the sixth year for him. And you could talk about his timeline. But let me just save it for another time when we have less games because I just want to try to do as much as we can here. So you mentioned Dallas in Houston. I'll tell you what I was doing. I was sitting there. Houston's down 30, 27, 655 left. And I'm going, all right. I want all my attention on this game right now because like this is a huge CJ moment. This can be a defining drive for this Texas team that's 0-3, staring at 0-4, taking on Dallas. Like what is CJ got here? Because from a weapons standpoint with Nico's back, you're like, you know, there's a lot to pick from. No, it looks pretty good. Hutchinson made some big catches in this game. They can't run the football. But that's some. I love that they won't quit on it. Even if there's games where you just go, probably should stop doing that now. So it's first and 10. We can pull the plug. It's okay. I know that you're trying to establish it. But sometimes they're committed to balance. Given that, but it was basically like the play chart for the drive where they go up was great pass, great pass. Hey, let's make sure we keep him guessing. And then it's like nothing. Yeah. Yeah. So as I'm sitting there, I'm going, it's all right, 655 left. Like let's go CJ Stroud fall start. And I'm like, great. Here we go. But first and 15, 26 yard pass. He's got a 13-yard pass to Niko. He's got a 22 yard pass to Noel. He's facing first and 20 turns into third 19. And that's where they run the lateral, which is incredible. And then Marx is in for the six yard touchdown run. And I'm like, man, they did it. But there's not one person that's been watching Dallas this year, or even in this game, that isn't going like, there's no way Dallas does worse than an automatic three points here to tie this thing up. Because they've got two 15 left. A field goal is absolutely in play. And considering what is now turning into just a nightmare for defense is that you are not going to when they have four downs to use, you are not going to stop Dallas with CD and Pickens from beating whatever coverage there is one out of those four times. And that is the task for anyone going up against this Dallas team. And it seems impossible right now. It's players, it's scheme. Another quarterback playing super confident, like, Dak is just incredible pre snap and now post snap. He's, I mean, they, they can just turn so many different dials when they need to. I talk about ability to pivot. Like that's not, it's not just their star CD and Pickens and everything. It's the role players. I always harp on, like Ryan Flornoy's ability to play in the slaughter outside allows CD lamb to move into the slot when needed. Anyway, he's good, huh? He's really good. Yeah, he's really good. He's, he's got a lot of ability. Uh, he's a gritty blocker to actually all their guys can block. It's just, they just sometimes Pickens and CD are choosing with it. It's funny that he looks small out there because of Pickens and CD and he's six one two oh five. Yep. Yep. He's a big boy. And he, and he can run. Like it's, it's, it's, again, and even guys like the tight end wise, like Ferguson kind of has his role. Like, you know, it's, but in the red zone, he caught the fourth down on that final drive. He's, him and Dak always have a great chemistry and reading things. Breven spanned forward. They're blocking tight end is really good. Like, and he actually, he's got a little bit of juice too. They love their big 10 tight ends. I think they're all of them are big 10 guys. Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin. Uh, but like CD yesterday, he had 10 catches, 12 targets from the outside lined up wide, 128 yards on the, in the slot, seven catches on nine targets, 61 yards in the touchdown at the end. And the touchdown at the end was one of those were, like the text and stuff is like, okay, are you guys learning your lessons? Because that was the exact same coverage that the bills beat them on, uh, with Joshua Palmer on the little post, different concepts and everything. But it was man to man, and then that back safety is kicked over to the loan receiver. And there's three receivers to the other side, including CD lamb. And then that man coverage, one hole, one rat, whatever you want to call it, the line, the linebacker away from the runner back side is free to either look up for routes, read the quarterback, depends on what the game plan is. But those DB are going to play with outside leverage, because their help is from the inside. So if I CD lamb in the slot, Dylan Petrie is a good player, but he's better going for it, not backwards. So CD lamb has an advantage there. It's an A versus a B. And he's running, he has inside help there. Yep. That's why he's playing outside. And this is the problem is that they cheat the safety, safety over to the X to pickins. And so he has no help from the back.
and either, which should make it a little tighter at least, but that's just that for the ability of CDM and Dak Prescott, that is child's play. That is nothing like that. They could do that all day. It's like going against the tubes, even though the Texas defense is not a bunch of tubes. But that as far as scheme and just ability wise, that is nothing in the NFL. And so that's why I'm almost disappointed that the Texans went to it again because they got burned for similar reasons with Joshua Palmer, inside breaking route, no help from the inside. And they cheated the deep safety over to DJ Moore on that one when they were playing the bills. It's like it said, that was just very disappointing. Now, on top of it, Kamar Elastar had a rough game. This is just like the bills game. It was 136 yards heel out. They hit a big bulls eye on his back and that's another thing. It's, you know, Jimmy's and Joe's sometimes and apparently the Cowboys are like, well, there's the Joe we want to go after. All right, which is a little surprising too, because when you look at it before the season starts, you go, all right, it was stingleys going to take out the one and for Laster to be the number two, like that's a great number two. That is what we all expected. I thought Laster might retire in the third quarter of this game. He was getting worked. And, you know, I'd have to like look at it and maybe sit with somebody a little smarter than me because Pickens 2 was credit wasn't getting any targets. So I was wondering like, to the course of the game, you still expect against stingleys like CDs going to get his wins. It's just what's going to happen with somebody that that's good. So you're thinking, all right, so Pickens only has one target, I think, through like 30 plus game minutes. So does that mean Laster's been doing a good job on him? They hit him on that deep one where, you know, other versions of Pickens, I would think for taking him that long and making impact of the game, like you might not even get that catch because you could shut down. And Laster was so mad about it that he like stays on top of him. He's still kind of fucking with Pickens a little bit. And then you're like, what's Pickens going to be like when he gets up? Because I'm like, this could be something stupid. And Pickens 2 was credit just ignored Laster who was still like laying on him gets up. And then he just does his quicks first down celebration. I was like, okay. And then it's just penalty after penalty. And they were all penalties. He got worked on that sideline route. Now granted it was an incredible sideline route. But at that point, like Laster, he's convinced himself he's not doing anything wrong, which is not specific to him. But you're starting to like take yourself out of it a little bit more. He was, and this is somebody who dropped the interception that would have sealed the bill's game. So he has a very talented guy with a lot of expectations who's had a bad start to the season and a disastrous Sunday, which, you know, like I think these guys can turn it around. I don't wouldn't put him down. I was like, hey, that's a problem right now that he's your starter. I'm not saying that. But you were watching someone kind of unravel in real time in the second half with him. It's why I always feel like corners relate to relief pitchers and baseball. It's just so volatile. You know, the good ones are awesome. The great closers and all that. But then there's these other guys that it's, depends on matchup. Depends who they're getting dunked on. They just kind of have the ups and downs with it. And what's credit, again, or I don't know if credits are right word, but the Texans tried to do some different stuff. Derek Stingley usually only aligns to the quarterbacks right side, the defensive left, because that's like an old theory, the legion of boom, Richard Sherman kind of years kind of popularized it. It's, hey, let's put our age corner on this side because that's the quarterbacks throwing hand side to the right side. They moved him over. They moved him around left and right. So he had 18 snaps on the defensive right side. He only had one before that game and over the first three weeks. So they're trying to kind of go like, hey, you just came peppered last year. We're going to switch these guys around. It didn't matter. It really didn't matter like last year. And even like, they're hitting get credit with getting targeted. But like on the last drive, again, to bring that up was they ran a comeback route to CD LAM. And on that last drive, I was to Derek Stingley side. And that was again, another great instance. And again, I'm really high on Clayton Adams, Brian Shaw and I'm a DAC and just how they're seeing the game that designs is they run that concept. It's called 99 classic concept three words, basically. And they always run in those big moments, the Cowboys. And they're Stingley, very good corner knows that. And so it's the same formation. We've seen 99 get hit. If you watch the end of the commander's game, you'll see it with two big plays of CD LAM. And Derek Stingley, all right, CD LAM release and vertical. Oh, I know it's coming. Here comes the go ball. So he starts turning and running then they run a comeback. So it was kind of the classic, I know what you know, what I know, what you know, kind of moment from the Cowboys, comeback. It's 15 yard games, another chunk play. Then there's George Pickens going to the opposite side on the next play. It's like, all these guys get going. But then the scheme just maximizing it at the right moments. And I can get any more on that because I encourage everybody. And if you rewatch this game, and this is why again, I'm so high on the Cowboys and what this offense can be, watch Cooper BBs headbops. And I know this is a sound very niche. But this is how they know what they're going against. Will Anderson played like a star. Do you know, Hunter's extremely good. They still got clowny. So the headbop, if you're on the road, it's the silent count if you're in the shotgun. And usually you kind of do one thing. It's either the center, the guard taps you. He looks back. He taps when the quarterback does the step or the hand and the center snaps it. Or they put their head between the legs and then snap it. There's just different variations of it. The Cowboys, which is so unique and so advanced, do it all. So there's sometimes where the the guard looks back, doesn't say a word. It's just when he looks back and the Cooper BB snaps it. There's times he looks back, then taps BB, then he snaps it. There's times BB bobs his head real slow. And then snaps it. There's times he's looking between the between his head or between his legs. And it looks up and snaps it real quick. There's times he does what I call the bouncy, which is they he goes like this. Like the head tilt. He does that as well. Like that is advanced stuff. Like that is hard to do. And especially on the road. I know it sounds so simple, but it's hard to communicate it. It's hard to often to line to all know that. And it's also the quarterback to be comfortable to go like, hey, I got I gotta give the signal seven seconds while I'm also signaling while I'm also changing protections. So again, that's the real advanced stuff and the twist that the Cowboys do that. I'm like, God, that's that's really, really good football. When he just went up, I was like, I can't wait to talk about Willie Anderson for one hour today. I'll have to wait. He's just monster ridiculous monster. All right. Let's start with a text schedule. I want look at the text and schedule though. If they're five and five going in, I wouldn't be totally shocked. I just look at the next five games. I'm just I'm an occurred or six games just really going to encourage people. It's like I'm not. I've one share left. All right. Let's give us a record. So it's Titans, Jags, Giants, Chargers, Browns, Colts. Give me your Texans record. I'm just say five and five. I'm going to go they're going to rip off. They're going to lose to the Jags and then the other others they win. They all these underlying stats I look at. They're like still like a top 10 team. And I know underlying stats are underlying stats and yada yada. It's a small sample size, but it's like the offense in the passing game is good. Like firmly good. Maybe they get away from this run game. Maybe they don't play the Cowboys who have actually a good run defense yada yada. But the defense is too talented to not figure it out. That's how I always run defense. Look like Pittsburgh in the 70s. I know they looked like the 2004 Raven or 2001 Ravens. No, it's it's one of those things where I the underlying stuff is actually not as bad as it seems. It's just really and this is always famous last words. As long as they clean up the mistakes they'll look pretty good. But I think they just had some bad stuff going on. But there's still some underlying good, especially that passing game. And I just I don't know. The defense just has too much talent. So it's like in the line. But too much talent to be given up 30. That's not like it just it's just if you would say the way you're going to score 30 against Dallas. If you were Houston, you're like, okay, we're getting our first win. But this is not new for Texans fans, by the way, with the Mico since he's been there, 0 and 2, 0 and 3, 0 and 4 did have a 2 and 0 start in 24. So if you look at his first three weeks, so that was before the fourth week, there was a graphic up, where it's like the third worst record of any hit coach start the first three weeks of the season. So I'm going to say four and six. Okay, but I love I love the positivity of five and five. That Colts game rattled me a little bit though. It did always, especially on Sunday morning. You hear it all the time in sports. You get out what you put in. If you're eating right, training right, doing all the little things, you're going to perform better. Everybody knows that. It's the exact same dynamic with your car. You might just pull up, fill up and go, not thinking about what you're actually putting into it, but it turns out it matters a lot. See shell.us/more for more details. Okay, let's do another start positive here instead of focusing on Denver's offense. There we go. Some of these San Francisco numbers on offense, we just have to share them with you to understand like what Shane hand and what Purdy are doing right now. First of all, Purdy has not been sacked on a 122 pass place, which is like the longest streak to start a season. I think all the way back to like, is a paid manning.
I think it was 117, so he's already passed that. So we're talking a long, long time of party. Again, get the ball out. He had a play yesterday where I always try to think of like, why is Kurt Warner come on and rave about Brock Pertie? Kind of the same way we were talking about Herbert with Brady going, hey, here are the things that he's raving about while he's also disgusted with everything that he's watched here for three hours, okay? Which is his own charge of topic. But Pertie had, you know, I always get mad about like when we talk about quarterback, she's like, oh, look at his form and look at his throat. It's like, yeah, but you don't get to do that. You don't get to do that when you play in the games. Very rarely are you ever going to get to like, pop, pop, pop, and your feet. It's like, okay, get his face, towel in the arm. It's like you're lucky to get seven of those. If you drop back 40 times a game, so I don't care about your fucking form and like what it looks like at your pro day. Not to say that pro days aren't useless for even more reasons. Kurt, you had one of those clean pockets and he did exactly that where he popped, popped, popped, popped, and like got it to the backside. It might have been the third or fourth option against that Denver defense, which was, you know, that you want to talk about missing Sir Tan, Moss both going out still having that kind of day. They, well, I don't care what the numbers are. That Denver defense was fantastic yesterday. So it was hard for Pertie. And there was that one little moment. You were like, this is why the play college, this is why the quarterbacks love this guy. There was nothing about it that felt physically gifted. It was just a moment where it was like, look how calm and in rhythm and through this, actually was able to stay in like one of those perfect setups to get out this throw that was a much later option as everything else was shut down. The other part of this, I don't know if you want to do the EPA stuff. I'm sure you have it here too. They're number one in EPA offense. The past EPA is absurd. So they're basically more than double. There are expected points added more than double the number two team in the NFL. They're at like 0.5 and Baltimore is a 0.2. And there's no way that holds up. There's no way. It's such a ridiculous number. We are talking 2007 Brady first four weeks of a season for this offense. Even if we feel like from a total point standpoint, it doesn't necessarily look like that. But some of these advanced things are telling you, this has never happened except one or two times. And it's probably not going to keep happening because it's so far ahead of everybody else. Yeah, there's some schedule stuff too. They've only had three TFLs. So they have no sacks. But the run game only has three TFLs so far. This is the entire season two. So it's just positive play, positive play, positive play, positive play, just run game, pass game, screens, downfield shots. Even on the stuff with Purdy too, is that, you know, Shanahan's offense is so, like one, two, three, four, throw to his fricking hash if you're getting single higher. You throw to, like throw to this spot, get to this read. But why Purdy feels always so different than, you know, Jimmy G and other guys that operate in this offense. It's just that little bit of creation he can sprinkle into. Like he's a really good athlete. And he still kind of gets underrated as an athlete. He's bigger than people realize. He's not tall, but it's always about thickness. I'm not hard on this. So Russell Wilson thing. It is. Russell Wilson on the set next to Burleson forget Kyle long. I mean, everybody looks miniature next to Kyle long. And this is Kyle is like a non player. And I've still next to Kyle when he was a player. And it's a humiliating experience. I can. And he has abs and you're like, what the fuck? So anyway, like the Russell. This is your Russell Wilson point though. Like Wilson looks so small just on the CBS set. Yeah, but it was thickness. Was that baseball ass? Yes, I, I can't believe you just said that because Purdy got a cubie sneak and they pushed him. And I said, God, he's got, he's got big ass. And like I actually said that in like a group chat, I mean, I was like, man, Purdy's just got a big ass. Like, but he's a good. I can't. Yeah, you play. Yeah. It's great. No, he's, he has this accelerates great ass on that Purdy, great ass on that Purdy. It's great. It's, it's, it's blocked up. No, it's, yeah. No, they don't get stuffed. He operates the offense. Like the, they do the old school dropback stuff, or it's just seven steps under the, from under center, no play action, like, which is I want more teams to do it. And why that's so cool is that all five options are live, you know, when you do play action, it limits it. Usually you're only getting two guys, maybe three guys out and routes, or it's touched down to check down, kind of simplifies it for the quarterback. It's not a bad thing though. I think every team should have that. But they're getting to the under center, dropback, quarterback is reading it out, one, two, three, four, sometimes five. And then on top of it, it's Shanhan is just, he's got the belt, like, as the best play designer and just the twist he's doing on his, on his own stuff that I just gets me going. They had a run to Debo Samuel, and it's a counter run. And he's offset. And what I mean by offsets, he's not directly behind the quarterback. He's offset like, or it's old school. That's like Bill Walsh old school stuff. And what it does is it changes the angles, but they usually pass out of that. And so now he's just like, no, we're going to run, and we're not running zone because there are no Shanhan's, the zone guy running counter, which is pullers, two pullers. And that's something that's really stood out to me is that Shanhan is, it's not that he's leaning away from zone. It's just that all the non-zone runs are just awesome right now. So they're, he's doing, they always have that stuff. There's always going to be a high floor with Shanhan because of the designs, but now the new twist he's added, pretty seen the game so well, it's like the offensive ceiling is ridiculous. That's why the points are like this. But I had a little stat too, is that duo and gap scheme. So duo's man. If you want to gap schemes pullers, we can get more details from that, which is make it keep it broad. This year, they have 54% success rate, absurd. Anything again, above 45, 46% is good. 54%. They're second to success rate in the entire week. But this year on zone runs, they're 12th and success rate. And you would never think that with the Shanhan offense. They can still do some zone, but now the other stuff that he's filled in his playbook with is just as dangerous as his fastballs. So it's like, now the off-speed pitches are just like, it's like prime Pedro Martinez. Like, he's just like, oh, god, okay, you can do that now too? Like, oh, shoot. Like, and you can just see defenses who think they have a handle on everything. Just get popped. And even though like that kiddle screen touchdown was like, you mentioned like the best coaches and like why football show grades, how these teams adapt. You shake it's actually one of the great, pretty creation plays. You check it's sought off. He's banged up. So now they go 13 personnel, say, of 22 personnel with three tight ends. Braden Willis is on the field. They go split backs with CMC and Braden Willis on there. Braden Willis motions out. And because Vance Joseph is in emotional blitzer, like we talked about last week, they bring cover zero, which is if we're running a screen against cover zero, we're doing great on offense. And because that motion happens, the corner has to go out with Willis. So Fonga has to bump out Luke Farrell and now the back side safety, his assignment is kiddle. So at the snap of the ball, he's like, oh, shoot, who's my guy? Oh, kiddle. And so he starts running over there, which is named Brandon Jones. He starts running over there. And then so now on top of it, this is what Great Plate designed us. It's just a tight end screen. But because that little window dressing, the defense is slow to the ball. Now there's angles for the blockers because those guys are all moved over and bumped over and it covers zero. So yeah, a screen against cover zero is great as teams that go against the Vikings. How's that work out for you? But now you're doing this and like that's, and then kiddle, it just looks amazing. And he just runs past everybody. And so it's just play designs, execution, it's everything that offenses is really awesome. And I can't, I can only get so high on the defense because they can't stop the run. But that was the thing. I even picked the foreign hours before this game because I was like, the Broncos don't have the natural answers to make that work to like abuse what this defense can do or can't do, I should say. I love Shanahana 405, you know, they're up 17, 14. I think lesser coaches would have just focused on clock and would have stopped playing football. And we still see it at the highest levels. It drives me crazy. And I think a lot of it is, they look at, and credit to Braille and Drake May, it was the same thing. We're probably going to lose this game by focusing on trying to get clock, but the problem is, it's just like a poorly executed timeout, we can identify those things easily. Fans, media can easily identify it. All the stuff that we don't understand as soon as it's, hey, how can we not run it out to clock? Like, why are you throwing? You should have run. Now you've lost. And what's going on at the end? And that's probably why so many coaches like, well, if I, if I screw this up, I might as well screw it up the way that everybody expected. I think still in the NFL, guys will coach that way. And I'm watching this moment going like, they can't run the football against Denver right now. If they hand it off three straight times, it's, it's not going to happen. I mean, McCaffrey was 15 of 52 yards, Serena had like that was, that was actually I'm surprised it was that high. He had the touchdown. So it kind of makes you feel like he had a good game. I mean, they cannot just turn around and hand the ball off here because even as bad as Denver's offense has been, now it's a completely different game. They come out past pass and then, of course, the perfectly time screen against that blitz coverage. And then kiddos just going, he knew he's like, this is over. It's Susie. Got it. He like gets. Oh, yeah. He was so happy because he's like, no one's, you know, it's still a tight end, you know, like you don't think anybody's going to catch you, but it granted, you know, both the corners is going to be some third string nickelback that you would have thought was going to catch up to him or something. Oh, kiddo is just like, no, this is over. And so that is one of those moments when when people talk about Shane a hand and how great he is and everything, he's just going like, we need to actually figure out a way to attack. And you would think, like, you're kind of surprised it didn't open up with certain going out and then Moss goes out, you're like, are they going to look for just taking shots at
backups here and they didn't have time for it. I think on the protection. And then there's another part of this to be comparing this start for party to Brady in '07, which is still the first half of that season, maybe the greatest thing I've ever seen in football, because they did tail off a little bit. Maybe it's the Rams. Maybe it's the Ravens defense, which I have as a rule, because I know you brought up the 2001 Bravins. Is that anytime we talk about any great defense, no one is allowed to be compared to that, even the 86 or eight, excuse me, 86, 85 bears. Ever. You just can't. They played with 13 guys. Two were invisible. We keep it moving here. But when you look at the receiving core here for San Francisco, like this is like Evans has had a really nice start. He's their leading receiver, not tied in. He's 34th in the NFL and receiving yards. Do you know some of the other guys who got targets yesterday? I couldn't believe it. Oh, it's like great. It cooks is out there. Yes. Yes. It's a great hit cook guys. Has a target. And like if you're looking at the receivers, like Debo, they're going to use it a bunch of different ways, which is fun to see that all over again. He still looks thick to me. Use checks going to be out now. So it's Evans. It's Kittle. It's use check. It's Debo, which is, you know, five catches, but it just kind of felt like, yeah, that's what they used to do with this guy. Then it's McCaffrey and then it's Brandon Cooks and Cowling Boots. You know, he's five foot eight. I don't know. Yeah. Yeah. And like watch him last year against this Bronco's defense in the playoffs. And watch him get swallowed up. Like that's the thing. If it was so easy, you shouldn't. Debo been going. I mean, he did. He had some nice games, but go off with the commanders when he was with air. And it's like, he gets right back to the four in the hours. It's like, oh, look at this. He's still useful. It's great. And that's why I want to highlight that last play too, is that Brain Willis, seventh rounder, who, you know, barely has a lot of reps. Like, he's in this key moment. And he has no, no one in this offense ever has any hesitation. I watch all these other offenses and guys are looking at each other. Like, what? Like our guys, like, you know, they break the huddle on the guys. Like, what do I have? There's never that with the four in ours. And it's, it's always been palpable with Shanahan. Even that first year in San Fran 2017, like they had no talent. They're playing undrafted guys and some of them worked out. Some of them were turned into Kettle, you know, day three picks. And then it doesn't matter. All the guys know what they're doing and execute the assignment. And it's like, that's just good coaching. I guess the, the oldest stuff is just so, so good every single week. All right, Denver's offense. So this is the third straight game. They've started with a three and out. The only time they didn't have a throw three and out was in the first game against Kansas City when next through a pick. They have 13 points total in the first half. Yes, that's the worst in the NFL. Like, it was kind of funny in the Jacksonville game because they came back and won it. Like it's Denver team. You know, they make the adjustments or whatever. Yeah, um, Nick's had 25 completions yesterday. 14 were the running backs. I know Bryant went down, but this feels like a waste of waddle, other than that second half against Jacksonville. So from a personnel standpoint, it shouldn't be this bad. Right. Why is it this bad? Because no, they're not calling, when they do call things downfield, he's not one place. Breathe yesterday from inside the pocket. There's a stack called average area. It's the sticks. So it's how far you're pushing the ball relative to the first down marker from the pocket. Bone X was negative 4.3. That means he was throwing it four yard sure of the sticks, no matter what down it was when he was working from inside the pocket. That is that and obviously, so wait a minute, say that again, because that's not like on the, sometimes there's some really good quarterbacks. And I'll look at their third down like to the sticks throws and you go, Oh, you know what? Is it usually a separator for me? Yeah. Hey, you're throwing beyond the ball. But I've even seen some guys that I really like where I'm like, Oh, that number, does it look very good there? But this is on all downs, all downs from working from negative 4.3. And I mean, this is, there's third and tenths. They're running swing screens. So they're not, it's not even just like him checking the ball down too quick, which is a thing. And it's been a thing since his entire career. And this guy's the same age as Trevor Lawrence and Brock Pretty. You know, so we can say, yeah, it's only a year, your three yada yada, but like this is what he is. There's a classic line like, you know, cheated doesn't change its spots. And that's what he doesn't let a lot of plays breed. And what I say that is because they run down field concepts with big routes. And then he just instantly looks at the check down and fires a fast ball to the check down before those routes are even breaking. And this is just a thing. And again, this defense is very gettable like this 49ers defense. And how you have to beat it is you have to create, you know, breathing space. You can't let these safeties clamp down. And if you know as how many times like Mauch Mustafa was making a play on the ball, it's because he's not threatened behind him. And they have Jamel and Waddle like Jamel Waddle when the literally the fastest people in football. And you never feel him like you never feel him being dangerous in these games. And like you never feel like bonus also doesn't throw over the middle. And that is again, I always harp on this because that is a good tell and indicator how well you're seeing the offense and how where you're seeing an anticipating stuff. And so when you run these big over routes and big posts routes and you're instantly going to the check down, those guys know I'm not threatened. So now they just saw off everything that's underneath. And so the yack gets squeezed. I think there's there's something to be said about the quarterbacks that are dangerous. And it's like I think opposing fans watch them ago. Man, we throw a check downer screen. It goes for two yards. Like, why is this so much better? It's because the DBs are threatened by those quarterbacks down the field. And then they're like, oh, okay, I get okay. Now, oh, shoot. Like the, so the timing of it, the spacing of it is actually proper. And so everything just feels always so fast with him. Like how his eyes are moving and not good in a good way. Pretty like you mentioned this calm 12345. It's here. It's like Nix is one done check down. And he's a great athlete. And this is even I wrote him up coming out of Oregon. It's like he's got great tools and unbelievable arm. And he's great with his legs. There he's great athlete. Just never uses those tools. And it's kind of, yeah, that's why Argy Harvey ends up what 12 catches or 12 targets or whatever you end up with 10 catches. I think, oh my god. They had a 27% success rate in the first half, one explosive. And they have too much this, therefore, again, I even they keep saying the word getable. Therefore in our defense, you can get explosives on. And they only had one. They had eight total successful plays before they got two more in the final two-minute drill. So it's just it's one of those things where it's like, yeah, the offense feels way too tight and they have enough talent on that offense. They've Sutton. They've waddle like they have speed. They have guys, the Marvin Benz. They have guys that can attack down the field. They just don't have a quarterback that's willing to do it. You know, Recorderbacks would love to change places with bone X. Oh, that offensive line. Like you go, all right. Tim Tibo has the promise. I don't know what they're going to call this one for Sean McVeigh, but felt like it meant something. This is a pivotal moment. The Rams are down all day long. I remember at one point, I looked at it. It was like, all right, Philly's 0-5 on third downs and they're up two scores. Like, okay. What is going on? Staffers picks were bad. All right. So, you know, this was staffer can be a little turnover prone to start a season. You know, there's there's stuff that happens if you look at that and usually calms down. He's got the cool of backs. So you're like, okay, why is this happening? I think the Philadelphia front, my guy Nolan Smith, even though he's unblocked on the second stack, there were some moments there. You know, there's some different names than the guys that are supposed to be like the brand names that are making some plays for this Philadelphia front. So like that part of it's good. Even though Philadelphia started losing guys all over the place, which is what the sport can kind of become. I'm even going to dare to say I thought Hertz had two things. I thought we're really good. The fourth and two, he gets absolutely destroyed because Shula was dialing up pressure. I think going into the second half, they were like a 59% blitz rate, which is like the highest of a Kishula game ever, who's certainly making a name for himself. Again, Aaron Donnell's not even playing in this game. So I thought Hertz on that fourth and two where he got destroyed the lemon for the first down. Yeah, it was a fourth and two. I'm like, okay, you know, he hung in there. I don't know if the Cooper touchdown over the defensive back is a good throw or a bad throw, Nate. Thanks. That's the bus right now over me. No, no, it was not a good throw. It was a great play by Darius Cooper. Even the second touchdown was weird because Darius Cooper is ad-libbing the route. Like, he should be keep running. The defense actually played it well. He stops. So it's like, yeah, credit to Cooper and Hertz kind of hanging there and throwing it, but it wasn't like designed. The first was a bad throw. It's a bad throw. I couldn't believe the Cooper ended up with a defensive back. I couldn't believe it on top of everything else. But I was trying to find things as you knew going into this like Devonte is his bailout. And that's how good Devonte Smith is. Okay. There are so many times where it feels like he is throwing, which is incredible too, because Devonte is not exactly Deontary Hopkins build, but it's like, all right, I'm stuck on third and seven, whatever. I'll just go over here. I think Ajay actually has that when he's right too. But Ajay wants to be down the field. Smith feels like any contested catch is like advantage to Vante Smith, which is just, it speaks to his timing and his athleticism because it's not just, yeah, it's not him boxing somebody out like we see with these other guys. So you knew with this Rams defense, especially with that blitz approach, you're like, okay, so this could be a tough one for Hertz. And it turned into an all time or tough one. So this lead and maybe I'm putting too much on the fourth and two, the rest of it's a disaster. As we all know, you're listening to this now, Philadelphia was zero for 12 on third downs. And I was looking specifically at one of those possessions there where it came down they're up 2010. Like think about this, they're up 2010 with first and goal at the Rams nine with nine 38 left and they lost the fucking game. I'm going to ask you about the decision and I could feel going four down. But when I started looking at what was happening
the third downs in the second half. It's like, hey, there's a third and 10 to start the second half. He throws a two yards pass the line of scrimmage. Third and five, it's incomplete, short of the sticks. Third and three, they decided to run it. On third and three, after the first two non-conversions, they're like, maybe we run it. And that's where you start to see, is this the play collar going? We don't think our guy has it today against this kind of matchup. So incredible comeback. I do want your thoughts on the option to not kick the field goal to go up 23-10. I think it can be dismissed a little bit, but I also sometimes go like, hey, what's wrong with being up two touchdowns? Instead of the seven that Stafford's definitely going to score, and how easy it is to get the field goal range at the end of these games now with the kickoff rules and everything else that happens. There's just so much here that feels like it's hurts going in the wrong direction based on what we've seen this season. But at least before they were good on third down, and then they have a historic dud. And that's why even the Titans game, where he went off on third down, I was kind of like, it's a double-edged sword here where it's like-- - Commander's game too. - Yeah. - And you don't want to make a living on third down. You want to be good on third down. You want to make your living on first and second down. Like that means the flow of the offense is working. And of course, Seikwang Barkley going out, it's not ideal. But still. - But still-- - But still sitting. - Just to interject, Seikwang's yards per carry is kind of nice, but like this hasn't felt like, 'cause last year was a regression from where we were at two years ago when he was one of the best offensive players of league. So Seikwang not being there certainly sucks on top of all the other challenges that he had with the offensive line on top of everything else. But like, I even felt like it's been Seikwang-esque even when he's played. - No, that's where-- - No, it's totally fair. - That's where their run game has been really bad. Other than the Bears game, and they kind of got away from it because of game scripts and everything. But that's been the trickle-down of our center who's already kind of banged up anyways, Kim Jergens is now a guard, and now we have a backup center. Lane Johnson's out. So again, who are we leaning on? You mentioned Davante Smith is kind of that safety blanket. Lane Johnson's the safety blanket. Because if you ever watch a gentleman hurts when he's not comfortable, which way does he bail? It's usually to the right. And there's Lane Johnson's stone wall of the guy, and then he loops around. Hertz is not good throwing on the left to the left. He's never has been. So again, that's why at hesitation with his offense, he've been going into the year was, if we want to be a boot heavy zone offense, your offense aligns bill to be an at-shoe duo scheme, and your quarterback can't throw to the left. You know, so again, we're taking, they're already limited and what you can do and what's supposed to be the staples of your offense. On top of it, you don't have tight ends that can block. Now we have Zach Hertz out there. You know, Dallas Goddard's already taking a step off. That's a big key if you want to be a zone running team. 'Cause they have to set-- - He was out yesterday too, right? - Yep. - Yeah, well, Hertz played and then he-- - Goddard's out. - Yeah, Goddard's been out for a couple of weeks now. You know, he's kind of been banged up a little bit. Anyway, say you a week when it'll look fine, anyways. But like top targets are Cooper Lemon and Dontevian Wicks yesterday. So, you know, that's not-- - Lemon's quiet and that's because Lemon's a slot guy and Hertz isn't really working over the middle to him. And he's just kind of like, there's plays. It's not even me being mean. It's just you watch it. And there's others I've noticed this now, is that he's staring right at the route that's over the middle on third downs or other situations. And he just goes, I'm checking it down. And that is just lack of comfort, lack of, I don't want to make a mistake right now. I, this is, now I'm, I'm feeling tight as the quarterback. And when you don't have a run game, that's, you know, two years ago, one of the best run games that we've seen in a while, when that tails off into not only just average, but a bottom 10 run game. All right, then the passing game's got to pick that up. And it's all just been living and dying on an explosive place. Those are the D'avante Smith Thunks. There's just no flow to this offense. And then the blitz wise, yeah, you mentioned it already, but Hertz versus the blitz yesterday, it was five to 16 for 46 yards. He went through for 47 yards against non-blitzings, but he was pressured 13 times, he was sack twice. And there's one, again, it actually I brought this up against with Rodgers, the four-week blitz. You have a backup center in there. You have a quarterback that doesn't do side adjusts or an offense that doesn't do side adjusts. And so it's just dead on arrival. That those plays are dead before they even the ball is snapped. And modern offenses shouldn't have those plays. You should always have an answer or a bailout or a check or an adjustment. And so Chris Shue was like, I'm gonna keep doing this. I'm just gonna keep blitzing because I'm not threatened by getting dunked on by D'avante Smith or AJ Brown now. Like you're gonna try and nickel and dime us. Well, a quarterback right now is not in a comfortable, nickel and dime world. So it was just a lot, they don't have anything to lean on. It hurts isn't seeing the game. So it's not there's no down-to-down efficiency at all to like overcome any of this. They just live and die by passing explosives. And that is an impossible way to live. It really is, especially when the defense is getting battered too. - Other than that. - Bad two weeks for hurts. Bad two weeks for this offense. The Bears defense looked like the Vikings, you know, on prime time Monday night game. So that always makes it a little bit worse. And then you're like, okay, how are they gonna respond? And even as they were up to like this game is so strange, but obviously could be a very pivotal moment for Rams team that no one would have expected to just start one and three even with the injuries. Rams did some cool stuff with a tempo, which I've been keeping my cliff Kings berries on that staff. And now this is two weeks in a row. The Broncos game last week where it's like, when they've gotten no huddle, they've, they've, the offense has gotten a little bit of juice. They had 17 plays in no huddle. Some of that of course is 'cause they're down to scores, but they were even doing it before that. When the game flow was just kind of neutral or game script was kind of neutral. And someone kind of keep my mind with them 'cause they're, they're offense feels a little hard right now to run games still getting there, but past game feels a little weird right now. Like Stafford's been missing throws, you mentioned it. He's a limit tester. Hey, I'm gonna try this shit and see what happens. There's not an receptions that were misses from him, but just look, anytime you see it with him, but when you see, I think he'd be the first to tell you he didn't have a very good game. But yeah, when it mattered, he still has, well, this isn't breaking news here, but the whole point is like, okay, we're down, we're down four, okay, well, who do we have? We have one of the three or four best guys to give us a chance, and it doesn't matter what the first 55 minutes looked like, which is what this game was. This was, I think he even said it wasn't the game I wanted, but we've got the result we wanted. And I think McVeigh felt a little something extra 'cause one in three was gonna feel like, it was like the difference between two and two and one in three is one game. It was gonna feel like five games. Yes, especially just how it felt. It was, that's what they knew, put up 40. And it's like, oh, I lost a shoot out. I was like, no, I'm just clawing for those points. So yeah, they, they are. And the special teams still suck, which is again, it's unbelievable how bad their special teams is. It's just, I can't get over it. It's like every year now, it's just every year, they're special teams staying. So that's another thing with this game. He played last year and they got a field goal block, the game winner against the Eagles. So that was when Jordan Davis was rumbling, rumbling for the score, and you know, we were looking at his GPS numbers. It's like, I bet you he had that in the back of his mind. Oh, no, it's gonna come down to another special teams play. Why don't they get ever beaten Seriani either, right? I don't think so. No, 'cause it was a playoff game when I came last year, at least. Yeah. I think we got to talk Pats, we got to talk Trick May. Let me say this. He has that fumble, and you're like, okay, this is gonna keep happening. This is the back fumble. The, there's no one doing what's gonna wanna hear that, 'cause hands can derail. Great, man. This fumble was just bad 'cause it was like an awareness thing of like, hey, it's, you know, like I get it, we're so's on fire right now. And there was clearly, like he's gonna win a bunch of reps throughout the day. And so I guess I'm kind of sitting there going like, all right, they've been playing better. I think that they were really good as far as like, we're gonna start attacking this bill's defense, which by the way, when you look at the EPA stuff, they've sorted it after week four, they're the third worst defense, which makes sense. Bedford's out, I know Oliver went down. Bedford's so important to what they do in the back because I just think there's such a drop off with the rest of the players. You can set me straight on that if you think I'm wrong. No, no, no, you're right. They just don't have horses right now, at all. Other than like, Deon Walker, our guy. That's, but yeah, yeah. But on the back end, definitely not. So as all the main stuff is like, starting to happen because you can go through the eight games and make it to playoffs and then make it, is this gonna be a bad game where they lose this thing? I'm like, you know what, there's too much juice to him. There's too much juice. And I don't mean to offend Brian Hoyer, but there's a reason why Brian Hoyer was never like the guy long-term anywhere. It's like, yes, we know you know the playbook, you're great in the quarterback room. These are compliments about Brian Hoyer. Or if Brian Hoyer, where you're starting quarterback, every week you'd be going, can we do better than this? Even though I know he had that absurd chiefs game where he filled in relief. And you know, it was like, oh, Bella checks. Just, just a God amongst men here. Drake to me has too much juice. And I thought that was on display yesterday, especially considering what's been happening to his own receiving core here. And it's not a great bill's defense, but staying in the fight, blowing the lead and coming back and much like that Niners possession before him and it's left. McDaniels is in his spot with Raible going, all right, what do we do here? And it's like, let's go win the game. And they come out throwing the announcers like, all right, the clock is stopping. And I'm like, they kind of have to do this. They need to be about trying to get a first down here to extend this thing. Because with the guy on the other side, like, who knows what's going to happen? You're probably going to end up losing. Yeah, the guy, miss, yeah, the other guy on the other side. [BLANK_AUDIO]
do anything at any time. So go to Orbat, go to go behind the back, should have been an intentional grounding. It was still hilarious though. Everyone mad at me. That should have been grounding. It was unbelievable. Like, but it was hilarious. I've never seen a quarterback do that. So that was a new one for me. But that's that's again. But they didn't even discuss it. Which is shocking. Usually the officials are great on that stuff. And there was no receiver in the area. It's a backhand, like good for Allen. At that point, like I don't think it's, although it would have been a safety if it was intentional grounding, right? Because he was into the end zone. Yep. The reason I have to stay on this, not that I feel like I'm not cutting you off here because I'm about to educate everybody. Intentional grounding first installed in 1910 because basically once they allowed for passing, guys were just throwing the ball at their own feet. Then there's another change in 1914. Teddy did think about that one day. Right, it was a penalty. And it was the loss of downs. Then I think in 1990, they changed it again. So it could be a spot foul and all these different things. I was wondering this about intentional grounding because it happens in college a little bit more. What if it were strictly enforced? What if it was you actually had to throw the ball at somebody? And forget the tackle box thing. I don't know if that would lead to more danger for quarterbacks. And as much as this is shifted towards protecting these guys, you have to because nobody wants to roll out the Sunday NBC prime time game. And it have to be Mario to against Bert, you know, Brady Cargo's back up. Yeah, right. Mario's back up because he started out. So I do wonder if the the rule is applied the way it was supposed. I'm not going all the way back to 1910, but that you can't, you shouldn't be able to throw a dirt ball at a running back that's like three yards to the left of you or someone like that. That you actually had to throw it towards the right. Anyway, it's just glad you brought up the Alan play because I couldn't believe they weren't even talking about it when it looked fairly obvious that that should have been a game-changing play. At first, I was like, oh, he's outside the pocket. I was like, no, he's not. And then I was like, okay, there's a receiver. And I watched it back and I was like, no, there wasn't. There's nobody like it was as really as clear as it can get. They try to reduce gray area. This is what I've been told, you know, over the years, you know, they try to reduce any gray areas that's like without, hey, we're not going to argue intent here because that can work on the negative side where a receiver runs the wrong route. And then the guy, I think actually very young got it for it last night. But no, like a receiver runs the wrong route. You sail past like sometimes they'll call intentional grounding in that way in the negative way, negative for the offense. I'm an offensive guy, so it's negative. But then for the other sense is that, hey, we don't know if that guy was on a screen because you'll see the running back blocking sometimes. They dirty right at that or tied in. And then you see the quarterback pointing. Like, oh, no, I got an eligible right there. I think that's what it is just because I don't worry. I got some rough stuff later. But it's like they are just trying to take away the gray area for the rest. Like even getting it past the line of scrimmage, they changed when I was in college. So about 15, 16 years ago, they changed that where it was like, just get it near the line of scrimmage. You know, it's not, hey, you have to actually get it past. It's like, just get it close enough. That's really what they told us. Like just get it close to the line of scrimmage. So like they're even like trying to just go like, yeah, so they don't have to get into like, what angle did that pass at with the marker there? Like they're just trying to reduce gray area. But no, I thought that was a clear as day one. But like in May, and actually speaking of Allen, like this is why those two are fun to watch both of them. Does they have enough idiot in them that even the negatives? It's just like, whatever. Here, I'm just going to launch this play on the like the next play. Like there, that's why the high end guys are the high end guys. Us mere mortals kind of think about the bad plays too much. They just kind of go, eh, here comes the next play. Like I'm just going to launch this one. Like May has the fumble and next drive. He's firing it. He's had the week from hell right after right 4,000 words. Check it out on Yahoo Sports. But after right 4,000 words on it. And then there he is on the first drive. Like complete the fork down against a two invert look, which was a really funky look from Leonard actually. He hits dobs of the sideline. So two reverts too, but the safety is in the flag. Corners back. And then he hits dobs on the touchdown, which was really good progression. If anyone's watched Texas this year, and watch Archmaning and Sark's offense, how many times they run bubble pump, where they pump the bubble or pump the screen, and then they run the two wheel routes up the sideline or wheel route a seam route. They run it every time they pass the 30. I will put money on it. I'll put minus 500 minus a thousand odds. They're about to run bubble pump. I think Daning had a pump where he then threw it to the pump fake. And it got destroyed against Ohio State. Because it made me so mad. I was like, to check down, even though it always gets blown up. Here you take it. I don't think you can pump fake it and then throw it to the guy and have it have it work out whatever. Go ahead. Oh yeah, no, but it was really cool. Was that this is again, it's kind of like May is seeing the game well. Even if it doesn't feel like it sometimes, is he gets to the back side there? Not a lot of quarterbacks get to the back side. And dobs is running the in-breaker. He has a long time to work on it, because he's the back side running the glance. Which is like a skinny pose, wherever you want to call it, bang eight. And so he pumps. And then you see him just work back, work back. And then he hits it and hits it, put it right there on dobs. So that is the stuff where it's like, "Hey, even though he's had the week from hell, even though it's knock on perfect, he's still working within the scheme." And on top of working within the scheme, and this is why the elite guys, the elite guys, and I think May is closer to that than he is to the middle of the pack that like people have been kind of making them out to be. I know how the start of the season is gone. Is that, okay, working within within the scheme, but then the creation. I mean, they had multiple times where they botched the snap for whatever was going on with him in Wilson, botched the snap, and then he worldly birds around and hits Hunter Henry on a crosser, the scrambles. He was very decisive. And you could, it was very palpable, like in that game, where how decisive he was to like, "I'm going to let this play work. I'm going to find a check down." Nope, actually, this time I'm going to scramble. I'm going to bail. That is, you're picking one of those three options, and I thought he did a really good job of that throughout the game, even though he's had some pressure in his lap throughout the game and, you know, he's throwing the chism. Who apparently chism. You know, maybe I've been running on a little too much. Oh my god, that is an all-time, like even as he catches it, you're like, "There's no way he caught that." No way, kidding. And then you did? One hit, and then before he had the digger out, and which again was May working in within the scheme, but then chism, "Hey, those guys are paid to catch the ball." And sometimes it's chism doing it. And it's not the AJ Brown that he traded a future first round or four, Romeo Dobbs that he paid a bunch of money for. It's, no, it's chism. That's a step up. But, no, I thought he was very decisive. If you only took one sack, despite a 43% pressure rate, that's always a good sign. You mentioned though, the bill's defense isn't great. My number is, yeah, 30th in E.P. per play, 29th in success rate, so it's not even just big plays. You can pepper them. And I'm going to credit, because I ragged on my article. I thought there's a lack of creativity with this offense. I'm not, I think Doug Morone, some of his stuff is a little archaic. I thought the run game was a lot more, had a lot more diversity to it. They run duo a little too much, even for me, who's Mr. Duo. And like, I love that play. They were doing the duo formations and then running different plays out of it. So it's like, okay, they're breaking their own tendencies. That shows a little bit of thoughtfulness. It's not to the Jags level, or Kyle Shanahan's level, but it's better than what they were doing. So I thought it was a really confident game from the Patriots on both sides. But I thought, I think their defense had been doing some cool stuff too. But yeah, but I really thought it was a confident game from them. They held Josh Allen to four yards running, which is always going to be a good sign for you. And then it turned into the key on Coleman game, considering all the guys that they were missing at receiver, which is incredible because Keon had about three years worth of celebration stored up to like, he was just, I was like, is he still going? And I don't really blame him. I'm like, this guy was just been a bus this entire time. And he was so good. And I love that Ross Tucker said that on the broadcast. He's like, this is the guy that was a Florida state. Like, dude, he was a man against boys at Florida state. And you're like, all right, even if it doesn't like work out, work out, it can't be this bad. And for the most part, it has been that huge disappointment. So maybe something there to get him to break out of what has not been an impressive start to his career. The Josh Allen interception. And I know like, look, the Niners situation with four minutes left and the lead is different than the past situation with a minute plus left and the lead. But they came out and they passed it twice. And then it's like, they're in a spot where they're going to convert a third down and may convert it. But even then, with in that spot, I'm like, you know, I just like, it depends on the matchup, right? Depends on how you're blocking it up and everything. Like, even Philadelphia and their game, that when they did get it down to the field goal decision in that moment, they ended up doing that with running the football. Because it was like working during that series. Or I should say in that position. But the May, well, no, let me just say that this was the Allen second and sixth, he doesn't need that. No, I know they said that on the broadcast. That was it. That was the first couple of years, Josh Allen interception. And I don't know if that's just a sign of a frustrating day. Even when Allen had turned the corner, there's a throw he has against Cincinnati, where he's deep and it's like second down. And he just takes this shot. And they were backed up in their own end. And I remember watching the game. Because I was in Alabama at like a Texas roadhouse by myself. Because I'd stayed for the LSU game. But then I had to stay and do all the football stuff. So I like, I'll never forget. And I just went, oh, if he never gets rid of that, like, there's going to be a pride. And all it was.
I think it was a reminder of the things that had us worried about Josh Allen at the beginning of his career Which we no longer worry about and that's why it was so uncareous there. Yeah. Yeah, yeah I was like oh it crept it crept back in you're like I can I can get us back and get us back right here It's like well, yeah, fourth and sixth maybe you know clock third and sixth time out situation second and sixth No way you can't make that throw and so whatever he knows that still have more bites at the apple like yeah That's the thing you don't have to try and swallow the whole thing No, I remember always the jets would get him with under sala and he would have those moments where it's like bad Josh will come out And again, I'm always gonna favor quarterbacks to have the wild horse to him like and just try and rear I just I'm gonna come back in as opposed to maybe the guy that's too safe because the guys there are too safe We'll never even try the stuff that pushes the ceiling up. They have those assume. Hey, I'm okay with this You know that usually the backup quarterbacks and media really like those guys But the guys that are the wild horses or it's like no, you got yes, you take those negative I mean the last weekend against chargers yet a couple of those moments, too You know in some of that actually was even misreads like the his first pick was against quarters and you threw the inbreaker Like you know, that's that's a route that's dead So that's always gonna rear its head and he only went in the second half They had 16 dropbacks. He was only successful on four of them Like credit to the Patriots again They were making him press and that felt like a pressed moment from out which you again Don't usually feel but he felt pressed a little bit in that game. They last that. I'm sorry. They had There's eat combined mistakels in this entire game for four from each side So both team if you watch again the the Patriots receivers have yet to make anyone miss that's an actual stat They have not forced the mistakels entire season still But again the Patriots though is like when I only got the check downs or got to iron these stuff or a play was about the pop boom Nice tackle in space. So I again, I want to credit the Patriots for Making out and go like oh, I got I got a push this ball because no one's breaking tackles right now Like so you could feel that pressing moment it popped at the very end This episode is brought to you by raising canes started back in the day by our friend Todd grapes and look if you're ordering canes You already know the move you get the box combo. We all lumped ours. I love mayor in college I love to see his resurgence here and whatever you think occurred. He is very good at those Underthroes like I don't know what the numbers tell us. I don't know what the chart says of it Like usually my issue would be with him third down I always felt like even when he was really really good to be a little third of Just a little short of the sticks on a lot of that stuff or I was like I don't know if he's necessary Well, he's kind of been preparing for this moment his entire life because a lot of these throws are just maybe that 7 to 15 range yeah, where that feels like their comfort zone Gentie had a big play. I mean when I was sitting there thinking about it. I'm like who is the best receiver on this team I'm like I guess it's Trey Tucker like maybe he's Trey Tucker's their number one There's even some defensive pass rush numbers that are a lot worse than you would think because you know You just expect that Max Crosby's this complete game record number one and kickoff return So the special team stuff has been really good. They had the weakest combined strength the schedule So that had a little bit to do with it So I actually thought they were going to get the rascal in this game and they did not this was a hard one for the chiefs Until my homes hits Thornton in one of the strangest injuries you'll ever see because Thornton gets up with a broken ankle and Celebrates not realizing his leg is broken and then falls down and then somebody comes over to look at him Be like you're right and he's like look at my foot and it was just snapped to the side He handled it very that's about as well as I've ever seen anybody handles something that candle that pretty well when his broke I think it just freaks you out and your adrenaline's going on that maybe he doesn't hurt for those first five minutes or something like that But this was a hard game for Kansas City against the biggest team. I thought like look. Let's not kid ourselves. It's a schedule. They're not that good It was I think well Kubiak is now shown. He's got the goods and I think their defense coordinator Rob Leonard does really good stuff too I think this might be a betting angle if anyone's interested is that I think the Raiders haven't let up a point on their opening drives Yet this season and if you watch that opening drive from Kubiak in this game or even the Saints game It's like he he knows the buttons to push like he's a younger guy, but he's been calling plays for a decent amount of course has his dad But the you we mentioned Bowers you mentioned mayor and then Ian Thomas The third tight and it's catch it a touchdown on like a beautiful design Because that was just a play off their most common run, which is toss zone Zora a lot of them back to the left side for our guys yesterday. Yeah. Yeah, back to the left JFK JFK offense No, it's you know, so they did the top they did they fake the toss. It's what's called a waggle fake the toss and then because they had the motion the chiefs Defenders brains popped because they're like oh motion run play and then it's always classic because those air me defenders bail back Because they're like okay play action usually means an over route. I have to look up and then there's Ian Thomas on just what they call wide delay delay and run right at the seam and there he is for a touchdown and You mentioned all the tight ends again is that the Raiders had 27 plays yesterday where they had one or fewer receivers on the field Kirk cousins dropback 14 times you went 10 of 14 10 of 14 dropbacks were successful 71% success rate 0.53 EPA per play. So I mean of those 14 dropbacks. He was averaging half a point and then 9.1 net yards per attempt and So they're getting into big bodies and Kirk is seeing the game well and chucking it and could be about 52 times Yeah 52 times in his top three targets were bowers mayor. I think it's genty and then mayor so I mean trade tuckers like fourth and targets yesterday and even on the broadcast like oh the wide receivers a little We're like talking about the room. You're like no shit. Like no shit people are looking at this wide receiver group being like Cody white second and receiver targets for the entire game The fumble part of this I The down not down wrist hand forearm all that kind of stuff You know, it just It's not like I was sitting there rooting for the Raiders necessarily, but it's like you hate to see Yeah I don't I I mean because that was like Kansas City was just having a hard time with this I mean I know they still ended up scoring 30 points, but like sometimes it's a hard 30 You know, I think Carolinas Points even against Detroit's defense where the corners just can't seem to cover anybody. It wasn't fucking easy for Bryce young last night Like that was a lot of work It's like what I'm talking about with a burrow against the jacks. It's like yeah, he got his numbers But he had to work for those numbers and mentally had to work for those numbers. No, I I agree I think by the way, I'm screwing up the fumble. I'm screwing up the fumble in the Denver game in the San Francisco game This was a straightforward one. Yeah. Yeah, that's right. That's right. I was trying to remember the visual of it Yeah, it was a kickoff fumble, but I mean it's the same thing it goes from 2319 to 3019 because the chiefs have a 20 yard field in this spot, but on the review I was thinking of two different things because That was young right to meet your young yeah, and that was why he was just pained on the sideline going like I think I just cost us the game What and again, like you said you just hate you want you want good versus good You don't want that to happen the turnovers to have you just want to see a flow Everything work fine, and I I have because of that 4-0 Vegas after like okay, you know everything I talked about like I wrote down I know so like how is this Vegas team built? How would they built into a 3-0? And you're like there's a lot of shit in here It's a lot of stuff. I have more notes on the Raiders than chiefs in this game in a good way like when I yeah, yeah, when I recap So basically we're both saying we like them we feel I don't know if it's a long-term feel better whatever yeah They were 3-0 in the best game. They've played this year was the one they lost right is that fair that's fair. They had no three and outs Yesterday zero zero percent three and outs if you want to ask how hard three and outs are the Eagles are 10 of their 13 Three quarter third quarter drives that resulted in a three and out this season The Raiders I have I've not half time adjustments not half time adjustments Just roll the ball out there and throw throw I don't even know if I'm being unfair, but that would not yeah, that's That's what it's kind of 13 third quarter 10 of 13 third quarter drives a result in a three and out For the Eagles. Yeah, so that's that's opposite half time adjustments It's the yeah, three versus David Webb. Yeah, 10 of 13 and they had another that not counting because it's not three and out They went for an out because they had to fill four down a curation. So they want to put a third in love Yeah, they so we want to talk about what the Raiders did I have a stack called I call it suplex. It's success rate supposed to play rate just give it a little tweak of just not just using success rate because I don't think it
always gets there. It's like hope for us for you. Your own personal. Yes, the readers won that battle. 5% differential. So they won that battle. They just had the two turnovers, but they were still in the game. And again, cousin, I mean, these quarterbacks got wet yesterday. Cousins, that's always been under anything with them. It's how tough he is. And how about like Cousins creation? We're talking about like just seeing the game. Well, like he had the touch on the bowers. He had several bootlegs, where it was almost Mahomsian, where he's bootleg, bootleg, bootleg, bootleg, bootleg, and then finds the late outlet, late outlet over the middle, like, which is like a, but cousins who's so by the book is also going like, yeah, I live in Vegas now. Let's, let's try this out. And it's working. And it's, I don't know. It's, he's so much more aggressive than what I've seen. You know, maybe the Atlanta experience turned him into like, hey, screw it. Like, which is roll with this, but I don't know. It's been pretty fun to see him kind of just like, let it all hang out a little bit, or as much as he can, let it all hang out. Yeah. Look, I, I love seeing this from Mary, because this is kind of what I thought he would be when he came into the league for years ago. And he's never cracked 330 yards receiving for a season. You could speak to the quarterbacks back there, but this is a nasty group. And that stuff over the middle, like it would make sense. If these guys, bowers, who's going to catch everything in May, or as you like, if these are your targets, you'd like to, it's like the old grog stuff of the red zone, not to say that they're grog, but it's just, well, I'm not going to lose. Yeah. Like what's the worst is in completion. It's a good bet. Yeah. Yeah. No, it's, no, I, I, I love mayor. I always thought he was underrated as a receiver and an athlete and kind of overrated as a blocker in a weird way. And now he's, he's a complete why. They extended him for a reason. They kind of do it. They're often going to be built this way. And then no, the old lines playing great. They're not perfect. Again, like our Mason Thomas went off, but they didn't really get a lot. I don't think the guy any sacks, despite all the hits. And so it's just one of those things where they're, it's playing, everyone's playing again to their best abilities. Well, I mentioned that with Shanahan. That's why all these guys all feel with kubiac were all these guys with different guys are making plays where it's like, like you said, why don't get on Mansor delaying? Like what? You know, like that's, again, guys are playing confident because they're not thinking they, they know that the scheme is working for them. And it's, it's cool to watch. Kansas City has scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to pull this up, right? But that throw by my homes, Thornton, I hate what happened to Thornton, but that was like the reminder of, oh, yeah. I'm just going to make it happen. Okay. Pretty good. I am going to, um, we got quick hitters, three a piece here. So let's fly through this a little bit. Still feels like I could do 30 minutes on the panthers. Um, I just love that game so much. I just love yesterday. I'm glowing still. Why don't you go first so I can ask you the last question that'll be our little sneak peek at Saturdays because I know you want me to ask you about one quarterbacks. So I'm going to do that at the end because we haven't done any Saturday stuff, which we need to do a better job of because we both obviously like college so much as well. So you start and then I'll go last and it'll be about a quarterback in the SEC. If it feels like the refs are really in, you know, going out for themselves, you know, marks for themselves going into the business for themselves, I think it's because they are. Um, okay, I got stats on this, but also just tangible stuff. Adrian Hill blowing up on Eric Wilson in Minnesota because he got run into, which was absolutely embarrassing. Um, you got a side judge saying he didn't flag him though, right? Didn't he just yell at him and say get back. Yeah. And like Eric Wilson was trying to hold it. It's like, it's like the rest are supposed to calm everything down. Like why are you escalating? Protect and serve. Um, no, the side judge saying, fuck you to Trey McBride multiple times, which was a new one to me. I've seen, I've seen some refs get after coaches a little bit, but not a player. That was, that was a new one to me. Um, but also for Morgan's own. Oh, yeah. Yes. No, I know. Uh, so there's stats here. All right. Through four weeks, I can go all the way back and true media year 2000. So this century, this millennium, there are been more penalties for offensive snap through four weeks on record this year than ever. 6.2%. It's up half a percent from last year through four weeks. So we're seeing more penalties per snap than we ever have period through four weeks. That is, they're throwing more flags. The refs are blowing up on players. Who wants this? It's not the good penalties. It's not defense of passion or fear. It's, you know, it's not like the penalties that can lead to more points. Uh, they, they, they, they, uh, they've called more offensive fall starts this year since 2007. They have fourth most offensive holdings per game since 2000. Special teams penalties are up. So even punters are really good right now. So now we're getting 60, 70 are booms. We're getting offensive holdings on those booms. So then the, the team gets pushed back even further. And I just like to compare even to 2020, which was the juice ball year in the NFL. All stats from 2020 should be thrown out, by the way, uh, so penalties in 2020 through four weeks. There was 720 total. There's been 934 so far this year. And that was before we're playing Monday night. And I, and I, this was halfway through Saturday night football. I looked this up. So there's been a hundred two hundred and fourteen more penalties already, uh, through four weeks. Then we got in 2020 defense of PI. There's 86 in 2020 through four weeks. There's 57 this year. Offensive holdings. There's 102 through four weeks in 2020. There's 196 through this year. So false starts, offensive holdings, the bad penalties. And they're just like throwing them. And if you watch the jacks, bangles game. Yeah. That was, that was pretty, uh, there was a lot of tiki tack penalties that they're calling on like 10, the first half, 10 first half. Most of my team since, I think it was week 13, 2023 or something like that, which was the cowboys, of course, of course, they're going to be the most penalized team. Um, but no, just, uh, if, so if you feel that way, anybody watching going, man, it feels like there are, there literally has been more penalties through four weeks than ever, the, the always that I can look at in 2020 or 2000. I'm sorry. All right. Well, I'm going to blame James Harden because I've seen things the last couple of weeks, the CD lamb arm hook, um, against the Ravens where you got the flag on Wiggins. Mm hmm. That was a James Harden grab the defenders arm hook it with your non dribbling hand, pull up into the body and get the call. Why the NBA officials have never figured out, be like, Hey, why even for a wrong a couple of times, let's just never, let's let this correct itself. Nope. Nope. We're just going to let them keep doing it. We're going to do it this year. Anytime you're ready, NBA officials to stop doing it. I'll be here on the couch waiting for it. But now we're seeing receivers do this shit. Uh, we saw it on the Wallace PI, which was terrible and took off the interception for the Rams against. I think that was Bryant. Yeah, who flailed into that one. Speaking of Raiders, there's a play on that deep shot over the middle where the Raiders receiver dives into the body of the chiefs defensive player. I don't have the names. And I, but I remember the play because it was like, ooh, is there contact? Oh, there's contests or flags like, no, he dove into them. So in a sport that didn't do this shit, I don't know if they somebody just got a heart and VHS for their birthday or something. And they started watching the way he manipulates the game. I think that's why the officials are mad. And I think the officials, I think some of these players could do a slightly better job running back into the field and not fucking truck sticking the official while they're trying to get back to the field. So it sounds like I'm pro official right now. I'm just pointing out as a fairer person because they could call way more PIs if they wanted to. And there's always the hey, no one does anything in the preseason. So all your pre snap stuff, what you're pointing to those numbers exploding, like this is part of it. But maybe I don't know. That's a lot of flags. I couldn't believe some of those numbers there. I do think the officials are maybe fighting back in a way because the frable flag seemed crazy. We had the Liam Cohen one as well. Um, because frable's like, I've done that a hundred times. Like, and he said, that's a, that's a fucking terrible fucking call. You got two of, two of them in there for the same sentence, which is hard to do. I think the officials are kind of sick of getting bodied, the physical nature of the job now. Have you noticed that too? Like, guys are just running into them where you're like, you didn't have to celebrate a first down and then turn and you're like, you could have, you're the most gifted people in the world that avoiding other contact. And you're just walking through the side. They see right, they see the stripes. They're like, I am I sat here? Like, I don't know. I think some two, if I do it, playing Devils Advocates, some of the procedural stuff is leaning, you know, new offensive stuff, more motion is going to lead to some procedural stuff. So I will agree with that. It just, you know, where I will say that to give them some benefit of the doubt. I just, you know, just watch, watch a hockily on a night game and an island game. And I know how much he's in that quarterback cuddle. How much he's talking to the quarterback, you know, it's a, it would make big dumb blush, you know, how much she gets into the shot. Just just, just focus on it. This big dumb have his sad card, I hope. Oh, man, you see, Barclay get hurt. You know, we're big dumb first thing as the first thing I noticed. He's a trainer now. All right. That was mine. I had that hard thing in the holster here for a little while after week three. So when I saw the, Raider's guy tried to dive into a cheese player to get a flag instead of, you know, I don't think he was going to catch up on anyway. So your next quick hit or that was mine. So I jumped on here. No, but the bears having more first down than the Jets had plays. I just kind of wanted to like laugh at that because it was just Ben Johnson's also a complete sicko.
starting with two quarterbacks on the first play. Like that's like college, big school coach stuff messing with people, you know, not NFL week four with backup quarterbacks, just a toy with people. So out of my one-liners, like Ben Johnson's the right kind of sicko, and I'm like, I'm totally loving it because I just like that kind of niche stuff, or I don't know if niche stuff is the right word for it, but on top of it, just that no matter who's that quarterback there, you know what Caleb's going to push that ceiling up, it's like Ben Johnson's got the goods as well. The run schemes awesome, the designs off this scheme, they're having him played a perfect game, they're still putting up points and yards like that. I think they had 34 first downs, the only other team to hit that this year, or I mean, anything about 30 is ridiculous, but 34, there's only two teams I've been both 30, and the other one was the bills against the lines on the Thursday night game, and we're seeing what that line's defense is all about. There, there, there reminds me a lot of my dad's early off liking these teams. A lot of track meets with those lines games. But no, Ben Johnson's the right kind of sicko, and then Dennis Allen, I have no idea how to gauge this bear's defense, but Dennis Allen, the defensive coordinator is doing some really cool stuff like I'm passing down, and the Jets have some problems with their protection scheme, and Dennis Allen kind of like, was like, oh, I can't wait to abuse this, and that's what happens when you get whatever was 30, 30 first downs where they have more plays than the Jets, or more first downs than the Jets even had plays. You're number one pastor right now, is Bryce Young. So let's see how this keeps going, 'cause I wanna talk about, and I don't mean this as an insult, but it doesn't sound like a compliment, where I feel like the Panthers have gimmicked it in a way that works for Bryce Young. And I think Collinsworth, again, was terrific on the broadcast, 'cause I was kind of with him. He's like, I went back and watch every throw this summer, and I didn't really know what I was gonna say, and then he has that kind of game, where I think Chino Smith had a Monday night game once where he was just on fire, and then everybody thought he was gonna be really good, and it's been a little up and down. So maybe I don't think Carolina deserves more than a quick hitter, so I'll just ask you this. Do you think the chargers want Herbert to get hurt for the entire season? So classic broadcaster moment where they're like, all right, well, Herbert's had a rough stretch of it. We'll see how it goes. First play, boom, interception. You just go like, you didn't even finish the sentence, and it's Ernie throwing it the other way. Now, Donald would turn the favor on his first play, but the interception at the end of the first half is absolutely inexcusable. You're at your own 28, and he takes that shot. It's terrible. That leads to a quick touchdown two plays later for Seattle. This was a strange game, 'cause at no point, did you ever think the chargers were actually in it, and yet they were in it. And then Mike McDaniel, where that shit's fun on your score in 70 against the Broncos, and quote, and rock him. But man, like this guy's taking a beating, Herbert looks broken. You're down another tackle again, lad leaves the game again, and you're going Philly special for this dude. At that point where it felt like, I get to give the chargers like they stayed in the game in a game that didn't seem like it was gonna happen, but in that moment where it's like, hey, this isn't gonna happen today. This is gonna happen today. And so now you're sending Herbert out there on a potential to get crushed. He got hit in the ribs where I couldn't believe he got up as quickly as he did, and then ran it immediately afterwards. So I know the simple answer is no, of course the chargers don't actually want him to get hurt for the season, but I almost felt like that game was reckless. Even though technically I have to admit, they kind of did get back into the game. And that's, yeah, that's the both sides of it. That's kind of like, yeah. Our quarterback got hit, he got knocked down 16 times, and it's not like, all knock downs aren't built the same. Those were hard knock downs. Like you mentioned, the shots of the ribs, all that stuff. And I'm with you where it's just, I don't know, man, it's just, they're so sloppy. And that's what's been so disappointing about watching them. It's just like, they're not even like well coached. Like they have some cool skiing stuff, but no, but every guy is nice. - It doesn't make any sense. It doesn't make, I just still blows my mind. Anyone that doesn't like Herbert, you have all the ammunition right now. But everyone would tell you, it's never been this bad. - Right. - And this is the stretch that he's on right now. So if you don't like him, you know, you're winning. - All right, and you don't even have to watch the full game. You can just watch the first play and you're like, see? - We're done, like, you know what I'm saying? - Yeah, but that interception isn't as bad as the second one is awful. The second one is like, hey, how many starts have you had? - Well, that was the last week to CJ Gerner Johnson. It was like, it was a high school read. And I keep going back to it. It's like, he threw a post to a post safety. It's like the thing you don't do when you did it. Or not getting the ball off in the red zone on fourth down. - Right. - You know, just stuff where you're like, what are you doing? - Yeah. - And I think that's him having a carryover of last season. It's kind of like that CJ Stroud thing. I'm gonna have to ask you to nerd out on the film where he seems to add two extra yards to the drop. And I wouldn't blame him considering that offensive line. But there was a third and long, I think, a really deep ball. It was a comeback, but it was like a 20 yard, well, it was probably more than a 20 yard air throw. It might have been like 20 yards beyond the line of scrimmetry, throws it to Hutchinson and the corner closes down and breaks it up. And you're like, okay, but why are you drifting backwards? Just a couple extra yards 'cause now, you know, just a science of how much longer the ball is gonna take to get there. I'm gonna have to send you that throw 'cause I didn't want to talk about it today, but I just did it on myself. All right, so the final two slots are gonna be for you 'cause I'm gonna ask you a question. So go ahead. - Oh, mine actually, I had a college one. Which I thought you would like, sorry. - Well, this is the one. - Oh, well, I have another college one on top of the one that I think you're gonna throw me. And I saw some atrocious clocking game management this weekend and I was even trying to pay attention to that stuff. And it's from college coaches with NFL experience, which, have you noticed that college coaches do not know how to handle the two minute warning or whatever they call on college? I'm sorry, they don't know how to handle it. It's amazing to me, but PJ, well, they never call a timeout before it. - Well, is that part of it? - So what Jed Fish did, burning a timeout before, fourth down with 220 left to go and all three timeouts, if you do not get this, they should be running a play there. It was four down, fourth and five or so. And they're backed up and Williams ends up making a great play. They call a timeout before that. That is terrible game management. They should be running a ball play before the two minute warning. So they get an extra timeout. So then if they don't get it, they can stop the clock and get the ball back. - Right, right. - And he burns the timeouts at area of two timeouts and then they burn two more when they are in scoring range after Williams makes that play. And it was like, no, you should be holding onto these because if you don't get it, it's game over. And then they didn't get it. And Jed Fish used to be the clock in game management guy for Sean McVeigh in LA. So, shows you what that title is. But then, and he does some good offensive stuff. I actually do like some of the stuff Washington does. But I think he has a good coach, he too. I was reading about his timeout strategy where he was quoted at a bunch of different times and he admits like, I am not going to do it by the book. - Okay. - The way that other people are. He's like, defenses can have the timeouts in the first half. We don't even care. Second half, they're for the offense and for that end. But I know, look, no one is gonna go, oh, okay, well then that makes sense in the SC game. Well, I understand, I'm not. Sorry, I'm not defending that. But I don't, I just thought it was so much. - Oh my gosh. - Right, right. I thought it was very interesting that he was so revealing that he's like, I'm not going to do it the way everybody expects me to do it all the time. And I guess, mission accomplished. Yeah, I guess exactly. And then PJ Fleck kicks an extra point when they're up five in the fourth quarter, which was go for two there, one points right at a premium. That one blew my mind too. But apparently when I tweeted that one out, Minnesota fans are like, first time watching PJ Fleck. So again, I have been enjoying watching the go first this year, even as a Wisconsin guy. I like their quarterback, Drake Lindsey. I like him. I think they're all, I think they're really well coached right now. It's not always pretty. Like they're a little safe on offense sometimes. But it's like, I don't know. I've watched a lot of their, if you have a good quarterback, I'm gonna watch a lot of your ball games. So I was watching that. I've been watching a lot of Minnesota this year. And I thought he had their team has been coached really well this year and helps when you go against race underweight. I guess as well. It does help. Well, this your Iowa. All right, final one, the floor is yours on some more. We have to talk about Austin Simmons. We had the show down with Camarillo Taylor. But Austin Simmons, whether it's Taylor getting all the national pub and what Keelan Russell's done the last couple of weeks, Trinidad having his moments. The other bigger name, established guys like Levitt transferring in and obviously Gunner still being there. I could probably still throw a couple more names if we wanted to. One guy named Arch and Austin. But the Austin Simmons show feels very real. And that was an ass whooping all over the field for Missouri in a spot where you're like, I'll probably get them like Missouri always feels like, oh, yeah, nice little Missouri story there. Look at you guys thinking you're going to get to the playoffs. But where is Austin Simmons right now quarterback for you from what you've seen? It's so I'm going to be writing a mock draft. My first mock draft up today actually. And he'll be in it. You'll be in that first round. He's going to be a first run pick. Yeah, it's not just you know, arm talents, arm talent, big arm, big arm, whatever. But it's how he's using it. He is progressing as far as you know, just as a player, but progressing from the pocket. He can make the horror throws. And I think NFL throws, you know, gets thrown around. But NFL throws, not just, it's not just like he had a big dig on third down, that was really nice. He progresses through it, it's called a dagger concept. And he progresses through it beautiful. But then just if you watch him push it to the outside, it'll be a little five yard, six yard outrounds. He's throwing them all the way to the field before the flat defender can get there.
and that's real arm juice. That's talent, arm talent. The thing is, though, hanging in the pocket, progressing, getting better each week as well. He stood out to me, few, I mean, shoot, when he was at Ole Miss, he stood out to me because Jackson Dark kept getting banged up. And then I was like, "Who the heck is this guy?" And I was like, "Oh, baseball background. Are you like 16?" What is this guy? You know, I'm not in tune. I'm recruiting all the time. It's like, you're not a real boy until I see you in college. You know, I can care less about some of the recruiting stuff there. So guys, I'll keep tabs on. And then I kind of, you know, he beat out Trinidad last year and then got hurt. And then I really like Trinidad. And so I can see why he never relinquished the job. But Simmons is young. He's 20. He's got good size. He's not the biggest guy. Pressure can get to him a little bit where he's kind of can squeeze up against pressure. But that's a live arm and he knows how to use it. And now his timing is caught up to the arm talent. And that if you watch his feet, he is playing with calm feet. And a game in big moments on third down or two minutes like last week and throw after throw after throw. And hey, to be this guy, but actually I was more impressed by him than Taylor last week. I know Taylor had to highlight throws. But all the in-between stuff, I thought Simmons was much better quarterback throughout the four quarters. I know he had a couple like dropped in the reception at the end, but it was really throughout that four quarters. Big throws on third down great decision making and great progressing to from the pocket. And so yeah, he'll be he'll be up there. I've been trying to side to me right now. It's like he's battling for quarterback three, quarterback four because other guys have definitely dropped off like sellers for me has dropped off. Dante Moore has dropped off. But I have him up there with you know, Archmester maker Trinidad. Like I really do think he's he's he's real and it's really cool because he's so young still even though you know he's trapped eligible. He had a throw to Kaden Lee on the right side line where on the TV broadcast, you couldn't see Kaden because of the way the angle now great. I mean he's throwing the ball so he knows, but it's one of those leads where it's not over the top. It's not like outside shoulder. It's not you know leading between the post cut, you know, the safety's gone so you can that's such a not saying it's an easy throw, but it's a it's it feels great because you're like if I just throw it out in front of this guy off of that cut and I know there's no safety over there. I can kind of get away. I don't have to like feather this had to be like feathered. It had to be in front of the DB. But again, the DB it looks like you can't see the receiver and then he like pops out behind him and it was like feathered down the numbers kind of on the inside of it where he's either exposed because it just doesn't look like he's beat the defensive back at all and it looks like out of it you know what I'm saying like it looks like oh that's a dangerous dangerous throw and it wasn't yeah it was no no I know exactly what's happening here right now and he even gets a little like funky with some of the body angle on some of this stuff that it's almost like he's showing off a little bit. Yeah, yeah. I mean the one the botched snap was it was it wasn't you know it's just stuff happens but the botched snap that turns into a touchdown like that's a display of armed talent in weird circumstances too because he's on his back foot and he's not throwing that high and he's not lying driving it's what Paul Christie just called looping liner where it's just that ball doesn't come off the screen and it's 40 something yards on his back foot like in that's like that's easy arm talent like easy arm strength it's not just throwing it like Ryan mallet 90 yards down the field you know it's it's throwing those balls and you talked about before you don't always get the perfect seven on seven pockets. He's just oh yeah that's great it's usually off your back foot or from weird platforms and that arm that arm strength never dips those RPMs never dipped so again to me that's that's high end stuff yeah no he's he's been super impressive to me. That'll do it a new personal record for us thanks to Nate Tyson football 301 Yahoo sports way back every Monday here talking some NFL and probably even a little bit more college. Thanks Dave. your entire order offer and soon don't sleep on it my college football top 12 after five weeks of action I love kind of where we're at right now because I don't maybe it's just getting older and doing this job as long as you do it where you kind of feel like I'm less emphatic about things just because you've seen so many different things happening but we do fall in love with some of these teams in august and then we fall in love with them all over again but I have problems with with a lot of the top teams and I think that's going to be really exciting there's another part of this too where I look for in it I've talked about the SEC depth I'm not the only one but there's something to be said about the second tier in the big 10 I don't know if UCLA is really this good they're ranked now they're 21st Minnesota getting Michigan which Michigan is supposed to be whether it was creeping into tier one or tier two I don't even know if they're in tier two it doesn't necessarily matter but that kind of speaks to that I will come back against them it's like hey is that a great win it was considering the circumstances but considering where Michigan's out offensively and underwood having this really great game I think by his standards against Iowa and then the game against Minnesota okay all right we're so we're back to the drawing board but the positive the positive of all this is that Nebraska is scoring a ton of points you see a LA scoring a ton of points Minnesota is probably going to be a tougher out Wisconsin is much they're not bad but they're much better than you would have thought northwestern scoring a ton of points so there's something to be said and maybe that's replacing Michigan and replacing Penn State but with the flaws that we've seen from top contenders in both conferences really we can talk about all the conferences other than the ACC because Miami looks ridiculous it may lead to a few more surprises maybe more so in the big 10 then we're accustomed to where it's felt like the big 10 traditionally like okay here's the top line and then everybody else is kind of an easy out so I think that makes the season even more exciting I'm going to keep Texas at number one off this past week as they get ready for Oklahoma who's also off in the red river rivalry Texas favor by six which tells you basically everything you need to know about this series I was going back through it you know there's been times where one team came in as the clear better team and because of this rivalry and what it means you kind of have to throw it all out there's also that stretch from 2021 where they scored over 200 points combined and just absolute shootouts again rivalry you know call it that I don't think you have to worry about 100 points being scored with Oklahoma's offense coming in their 94th in yards per play which is actually up from last year that's how bad their offense was 107 so look I'm keeping Texas at one Texas is actually 87th in yards per play and that's why anybody that says hey I don't have Texas number one and I have one of these other teams I'd be totally fine with it keeping Georgia to I don't know that vandys a real test score wise it was a little bit earlier there one of the running backs is dinged up I'm picking Georgia at Alabama this weekend and we will get to Alabama who now the last two weeks and offense is absolutely rolling Georgia has not won at Bryant Denny since 2007 I'm putting Miami number three in the AP Notre Dame is number three again it's a toss up I know it's Clemson but at least it was someone and again if you were saying Clemson isn't someone anymore that's fine but it was the exact same thing at least with better personnel and yeah the men's stats are absurd ensure a lot of the throws are behind the line of scrimmage but look at the first play of that game like I'm watching it I'm like okay it's another throw the line of scrimmage to Cooper Barcade who came over from Duke and it's so well executed that 78 the offensive line from from Miami doesn't even have any one to block on this inside screen like he's looking for somebody on Clemson to kill and they it's so perfectly executed Clemson's a mess on it and he goes 70 plus yards 78 finally gets his hands on somebody I don't know if that block
necessarily would have mattered. But I watch it back again. I'm like, this is ridiculous what they're doing. And Damon Wilson, who was at UGA, who had nine sacks last year from Missouri, absolutely dominant this game from a past rushing standpoint. So maybe it was Saturday night, maybe it was the atmosphere. I think Herb Street at one point was like, yeah, they can't do anything in offense and take the quarterback for Clemson's limping down. So this is great. And maybe it's just because Notre Dame messed around with North Carolina for the first half. And that brings us to the Irish at number four. They scored, they punted, then scored on eight of their next nine possessions. North Carolina ties, well, they should have tied it up with a kickoff return to start the second half. So it's 21-20. And you're like, what the hell's going on here? It's Belichick going to have some sort of moment, not the case. CJ Carr had a ton of touchdowns in this one. But Walton, who's the third string, or was going to be the third string running back. He's not anymore. He's getting the bulk of the carries and he did against North Carolina as well. He goes off. So it's like, all right, here's a third weapon. And that's kind of been the thing now with Notre Dame is you're like, who's some of these other guys going to be after the established names, after the two running backs go to the pros last year. It looks like they've got three running backs. It looks like they have plenty of wide receivers. And you could nitpick about the defense a little bit here if you wanted to. But this is 15 straight wins by double digits. That's number two all time to Miami. The greatest talent as far as any rosters ever happened in college football that 2000, 2001 team, 117 straight games by double digits. Again, go back and look at that roster. If you're bored today at BYU in two weeks or Notre Dame, they're already favored. Again, I don't know if you can get it anywhere, but it's minus 10 at BYU, which speaks to what we saw from BYU this weekend. All right, number five Ohio State. That was the most typical Iowa game ever. I mean, this kind of like a compliment, but Iowa football feels like having a lake house, but you're across the street from the lake. And you hope you become friends with the neighbors. And you're like, hey, you know, tell the kids anytime they want to come by, but like it still isn't your lake front. And it's awesome to have a lake house in the lake village, but you're not on the lake. And there's just always something kind of missing. And that's how it feels like with Iowa, even in the really good seasons where you find out immediately like, yeah, you're not one of these teams, even with the start and the respect that we all have for him. And I love the game day. It was there. Love those people. But you're watching that game play out going, yeah, this isn't going to happen. Like it's just not going to happen. I thought Saiyan's mobility in the pocket, because I'm going to talk about him a little bit. Little reminder of some of the stuff that maybe scouts would like. If not him matching up physically with some of the other guys, which are my Smith, whatever, he's been favorite. Hank Brown was 12 of 27. I think the backup actually looked a little bit better there for Iowa, but it was also in a situation where Ohio State wasn't exactly ramped up on defense because it didn't really matter. So he goes five to five with a touchdown. Smith finishes with 11 with 206 and another two touchdowns. And yeah, I mean, if I want to look at some Ohio State, I was looking for something with Ohio State. They're 12 in yards per carry, but we like both of their running backs. So it doesn't really seem to matter as of right now. Indiana will put him at six. Bama is six in the AP. So Indiana did drop one spot there. Battle with Nebraska for first place, but there are six two and oh 10 teams at six two and oh teams in the big 10. Number seven, Alabama. All right. So Keeling Russell, the last two weeks, he's been maybe the best quarterback in all of college football. He's number one in total QBR in college football. Coleman Williams, three state games of the touchdown. Now yards per carry, the beginning of the year, I was like, maybe Russell's the quarterback because he's going to be able to escape and they don't necessarily like their offensive line. And there's a bunch of procedural stuff with them that I haven't really been able to figure out why it's been such a mess. But at times like the Kentucky game defense took over this past weekend with the showdown with Kamari Otaylor, you're like, okay, they can just go crazy. They went crazy against South Carolina, who's a mess. But watching Keeling Russell in this offense now, this is what's interesting about the Georgia matchup because as much as we love Gunner Stockton's efficiency and what Georgia has done and more explosive plays, we talked of Bill Connelly about that last week. It's like, you know, Georgia, he called them a blue chip service academy on offense the last few years. And there's numbers that back all that stuff up. But to the start of this season, it's looked a little bit different. But will they, and I don't know if it turns into a shootout because I think both of these defenses are capable of having just a great Saturday. But if it turns to some kind of shootout, can Stockton and that offense keep up with what looks like one of the best wide receiver rooms with Coleman Williams looking back, Brooks Scott, that's an incredible group at wide receiver. So will Georgia be able to hang with them personal wise and at quarterback? And based on what we've seen in the last two weeks, like, I don't think Russell's going to play like that against Georgia's defense, but at least you know, it's a possibility. And some of these deep throws now in his patience and what he's doing with his physical tools are incredibly impressive. So the other thing too was running the football last year, there were 127th in yards per carry, which seems impossible. Like no one will ever believe that five years from now that an Alabama football team that actually made the playoff was 127th in college football and yards per carry this year. They're 34th. So that number is starting to go in the right direction. All right. So number eight, this is where it gets weird. And it's starting to with the AP poll turn into standings instead of actual rankings. They have BYU eighth. And I talked about Texas Tech being disrespected last week in the polls. And after their battle with Colorado and Deon Sanders, who apparently is going to play like 10 quarterbacks a season. Look, I can't put BYU eighth. All right. Bayer at quarter back. Bachmeier had, let me see the number here. He had 62 yards passing in this game. He was 11 to 24. But when I looked up when they were battling with TCU and he ends up running in that touchdown, they basically sealed the game, even though there was still a lot of game left. And the defense is so good with BYU that you're like, all right, well, this isn't, they don't have to worry about it. So I had these dueling big 12 teams that you're like Texas Tech isn't what we thought it would be. BYU isn't necessarily what we thought to be. But the voters have liked BYU more than Texas Tech, even though I think going into this week, the BYU schedule didn't even stack up with what Texas Tech had done. Again, I think it was because everybody seemed to be watching that Oregon State game, which was tough than the Houston game, but whatever. I mean, they pulled it out. That was a ranked team. You can have them to this point because I don't, I think that number of Notre Dame's favored by 10 at their place tells you that Vegas does not look at BYU right now despite the record and despite the rankings as a real threat. So why are they ahead of Ole Miss? Why are they ahead of LSU? Ole Miss with their, but they've played people. LSU's played someone and they both have a loss to show for it. So granted, the Florida thing is over after their beat down at Mizzou. By the way, how about that game? I'm not obviously going to have Florida in my top 12. They felt it's 16 in the AP, 15 in the coaches pulled, but of all the ways that Missouri Florida game could go. And Simmons has been one of the best quarterback stories in all the college football. I don't have Mizzou in my top 12. They're 14 in the AP. They didn't make my thing. Even though if you wanted to say, "Hey, would there win against Florida that's better than anything that Texas Tech and BYU's done," that would also sort of apply to what I'm doing here. I thought it was the tackles for loss early against Florida's rushing attack. We were like, "Wait a minute. Like this doesn't happen at Jaden Ball. This is the best running back in college football." He had 12 carries for 13 yards. And again, getting behind the line of scrimmage with a defensive front and the overall defense losing four players at the NFL draft. So look out for Mizzou, maybe creeping in at some point, taking a look at their schedule. They've got A&M, then they're at Ole Miss. So they get two of those. They're going to be flirting with a playoff appearance here. That should be maybe even more than what BYU Texas Tech has done. So maybe I'm still stuck to the pre-season thing here a little bit. So I went number eight, Ole Miss. Yes, I get it. They got their ass kicked at Florida, but they played Florida and LSU. And they played Louisville. LSU loses a close one at Ole Miss, houses A&M. That'll be a ranked win now, but it shouldn't be a ranked win at the end of the season, who knows what's going to happen with A&M. So I'm just going to put those two teams ahead of BYU who's passing offense. I could not support in Texas Tech, where if you look at their yards per play allowed, they were number one in college football last year. They're 26th. So I'll go Ole Miss, eight, LSU, nine, Texas Tech, ten. I'm going to put Utah ahead of BYU. So that's 11, 12 knowing that maybe there's an argument to get Oregon back in the mix, but that loss is going to look so nasty. And maybe Missouri is the answer to this. So there you go. Top 12. You want details? Bye. I drive a Ferrari, 355 Cabriolay. What's up? I have a ridiculous house in the South Fork. I have every tour you can possibly imagine. Best of all, kids, I am liquid. So now you know what's possible. Let me tell you what's required. Live advice. Our email address is live advice,
[email protected]. I am in Chicago for the day. Well, I've been here a couple of days. I was going to say, yeah, you had a weekend. Sure did, you had some videos? Yeah, trying to figure it out. So DJ Shadow, do introducing. Start to finish. Solo. Didn't even bother inviting anyone. New no one would want to go. Was in heaven.
one of the formative CDs of my entire life. So I was trying to explain to the people, I was like, what are you doing? This is, why do you want to do that? - I was the guy explaining to the girl at the bar who's clearly not interested in what's going on. - I don't even bother. I don't know. - Do you know how important to get shadow is? - You think there's a skip on introducing? Are you serious? And he had these great visuals go and then he told some stories. Just try to get him on the pot. And then the whole thing was around Diplo Run Club, which I had, I vastly underestimated what that was. I was like, so what do they get together? It was kind of like an organic, just a bunch of people meet up and pop up, flash mob. Nope, 12,000 people at a park and it's going to take forever to get into it. Actually it was pretty well handled but I didn't give myself enough buffer so I wasn't able to run unfortunately. But somebody ran with my bib in their pocket. So apparently I ran like a 20, 20 minute, 5K. So still got it. - That work on. - Yeah, suck one. I always love this, we'll feral. I'd like ads, but like suck one. All right, we're bearing the lead here. Kyle has a glow to him today. - Yeah, he does. - And if you're watching this show on Netflix, I'm looking up instead of at my laptop because that's the way the screen's going to work. Kyle, I got to hand it to you boys. They came in, they battled, got one on the road against the bills, how are we feeling? - It didn't feel like it was going to be a get right game. So I didn't wear this jersey. Yesterday I wore a black Patriots hat that I could totally stash if it was like, I was going to be out all day because I didn't work last night. So I was like, I'm going to hit the town. So I didn't want to be a sad guy walking around in this fucking Patriots jersey. And now I wish I did because that was unbelievable. It was awesome. I was watching next to like an adorable older Philly family that were watching the Eagles. - So it was really a good time for the most part they did. - What were you doing? - Like the reverse funeral thing when a team shows up to an elimination game, dressed in black. I just didn't feel like nothing gave me any real hope other than the one I just have to, the bottom line of hope I have to carry in from week to week and I just, I didn't want to, I didn't want to be like standing out in this jersey. And I wish I did because it was really, it was really fucking awesome. - Is that the move now though? Then see just black hat until they lose otherwise? - No, I just, I don't know, it just didn't feel right. I was like, this is, there was no hope, you know, going into like, oh, Drake May, it's like we're doing fake shoulder injuries or whatever. I was just like, this is, this is, I didn't really have any real hope. Plus I didn't want to get this thing dirty too. You know, I'm out there eating wings and sweet chili sauce. I just didn't want to ruin it. You got to get this thing dry cleaned. You can't throw in the fucking washing machine, you know? This is the, - I can do that. - Raiders Jets Bears Dolphins Packers. Next five, give me your projected based on your model, what the past record will be after those next five games. - Those next five wins? - Yeah, dude. - All right, here we go. Seven, two. - Maybe two Packers, I don't know. Maybe the Packers. - Packers, I don't know what you mean. - I would say at Chicago. - Is Caleb gonna be back? Thursday game? - Yeah, I think, I think they're gonna let Caleb Williams get his job back. - All right, cool. - Has Gray's that Beijing roll out? - You gotta go through Beijing's dad house. - No, no, yeah, I mean, that's you guys now, you know? - I know. - Has there ever been two less supportive dads on a quarterback's team between Rome, Beijing? Like, what's the system here? Oh, my teammates, dad, shit on me? All right, let's, well, he can send an email to us if he wants to. - Yeah. - Let's get to, let's get to one here. This is called the Jonas Brothers Fight. 5-11-205, my NBA comp and my men's league is Luke Canard, hold my own defense, great catch and shoot, much worse off the dribble. Need you to tell me if I'm in the wrong here. The other night I ended up at a Jonas Brothers concert. Originally, when I agreed to go with my girlfriend, my favorite band, All Time Low, was supposed to open for the show. - Okay. - So Rudy, you gotta, you're a big All Time low guy. - No, it rings a bell. I'm trying to think of a song. Hold on. - Number four. - Well, that's okay. - Oh, wait, yeah, dear Maria Calmy in great song. Great song. - Okay. - Millennial classic, there you go. - That's what I thought. I was thinking about this the other day, just as a quick aside. Whenever you think of the 50s, you think of something. Whenever you think of the 60s, you definitely think of something. Same thing with the 70s, 80s, 90s. What do you think of when you think of the 2000s? - 50s. - Everywhere. - Yeah. - Rocked a Lincoln Park. - He was fucking everywhere. You're not, you're not doing a great job. New medal. - I just, I'm just thinking. I'm not even talking about music, but just. - Oh, just a thing. - I thought about this a lot actually because I feel like, and I was, I was born in 1988, so I didn't have like a, you know, I was born and raised in the '90s. The '90s kind of feels like the last really cool decade. - Bright colors. - Is that fair to say? Because the 2000, when I grew up, I was a teenager in early 20s in the 2000s. And there was like a lot of bad fashions, a lot of questionable music. Big, emo scene, like, I don't know. - I'm not saying I hate it. -とか shells, yeah, I'm thinking. - But I don't know that you look back and go, that was cool, you know, like it was just the thing that happened. Whereas the '90s, you're like, oh man, the aesthetic, like, sign fell, the bulls, like there's just so much. And again, that was probably like really pre-internet, pre-certainly social media, so that probably plays into it too. But yeah, I don't know. 2000s were weird, man. - It just doesn't feel like there's this identifiable feel. Like when I say 70s, now granted, you could also say the 70s are the worst because it's probably when the confidence in the country was that it's the lowest ever for a bunch of very justified reasons. But whenever I'll like read something or then I'll think back, like the 90s, I could just sit here and riff for five minutes and like, hey, the 90s were this. The 2000s, I don't know, man. I wonder, I wonder if that means anything. All right, moving on, back to the emails. So yeah, share amongst your friends. So all-time low was supposed to open spoiler. They did not open, but I kept my word and went anyway. Not all heroes were capes. Two dudes I'm friends with who agreed to go to the show in the same pre-supp position. Smartly bailed a week beforehand after they found out all-time low wouldn't be there. So the crew ended up me and my girlfriend plus seven other girls. For context, all of these other girls are friends of my girlfriend. Again, I agreed to go, so no one should cry for me. But damn, anyway, long story short, the girl buying the tickets for the whole group fucked up and accidentally bought one of the eight tickets and row BB instead of row B. So we all got to our seats and realized one girl, let's call her Lucy, was sitting alone and row BB while seven of us were sitting in B, including me. Me being the only guy immediately texted the other girl, Lucy, who I've been friends with for years, she's married, don't make it. We were telling her, she needed to immediately come down and take my seat so she could sit with her other seven girlfriends and I'd take the solo seat. There was zero reason for her to be alone while the one guy took a girl gang seat. The girl played it off, said no big deal. As in, she was being gracious about it, but as any good guy, it was going to force the issue, walk up to her row and make her take my seat. Here's a problem. My girlfriend immediately started poking at me, saying she didn't want me to move because she wanted to sit next to me, even though she's friends with all these girls. They're in a group chat together. I know for a fact they're actual friends, not fake friends. She complained and guilted me about giving up the seat and regrettably I stayed. Should I have forced the issue here? I see my girlfriend every single day. To me, this is an obvious moment where both should have sacrificed two hours at a concert so that someone were friends with could have a good time. I thought my girlfriend was incredibly selfish and I've been disappointed about it since. Lucy, the row BB girl, is close with all of these girls and would've had a great time on the row with everybody else but also added to the girl group vibes. In meanwhile, my girlfriend blocked the move. I will say I could tell the other girls are frustrated about it, but I chose to keep the peace and not force the issue. Love you guys making a ruling. What could I have done differently if anything? I respect your. I think it's good that you went back to mind in your business, man. I really do. I think that's the best move because like I understand that you want to be like, no, you're absolutely, you don't deserve it. Like I understand that you want to end your head. You want to do that, but like, if your girlfriend already is going to be upset that you even tried that and then you actually went pulled off the switch, you'd rather her satellite friends be disappointed in you than the person that you live with or whatever. I think it's nice that your head isn't the right place. I think it's fine to be disappointed in your girlfriend for a behavior. I don't think it's okay to tell her that's going to end well for you. So I think everyone knows where you stand. You maybe made a big enough scene so that her friends were like, well, fuck, at least he tried, but you know, right. So I think this is the max effort you should have put into it. - Correct. She, lack of self-awareness there from her is bad. Like this is a no brainer. You made the right call. Everyone else knew it except your girlfriend. That's not saying it's a red flag, but it's a flag. But as Kyle said, like all the other girls knowing that you were willing to fall on the sword here is huge for you and you don't have to ruin anything on the home front. You just kind of let it die there. I will say, you know, this could be one of those things wherein like a month or so you get new and arguing over so you can just bring up. Like, and you didn't let me move that seat and everyone thinks you don't do that. You don't do that. Don't, yeah, this one's got to be buried deep down. Like you don't ever bring this up again 'cause it's probably not great. - That's a little worse, right? When you're fighting and you're like, I need something. - I need to know. - Yeah. - I need something. And you're fucking uncle. - Immediate regret when you pull up the gun. - So don't do that. Don't do that. But the win is that everyone knows who you are.
I'm kind of knew that you were the right guy here. So that's good for you. You're good. - You lost when you woke up that day, man. (laughing) - Jaybrose. - And he had a great attitude about it. - Yeah, this guy's great. Like he still went. I mean, this is the thing that I think is one of the frustrating dynamics as we try to figure out the opposite sex. But let's face it, like if there's something I wanna do and I know that she's gonna hate it. I don't ask her to go. They ask us to go to the things we know we're going to hate to prove some fucking point. I mean, if you ever had to sum up the disconnect that will live on forever, it's that. It's dudes generally are not like, do you wanna go to WWE? You know, it was me and seven of my friends. - Get black out, you're on pizza. - Yeah. - Yeah. - Yeah. - Let's do it. - We're in color. - We're in color lights. (laughs) - We're gonna wear oversized T-shirt. The new allegiance stadiums must be sick. Right, party brothers are showing up. - Yeah. - When she says no, you're like, hey, you don't wanna go to this, do you? And she goes, absolutely not. You're like, that's it. You'd never say like, well, it would mean a lot to me if you went. So you're the man, you went to a Jonas Brothers concert. Seruti's right about the flag part of this. I mean, is this normal? Is this a pattern? It's like selfish, selfishness in the way it can show up sometimes. You're just like, what, like that's, that's it. Now, who knows? I mean, he's telling us that they're all friends. And I get what she wanted, she wanted, she likes you. She wanted you, you know, wiggling around a little bit there in the row, standing up and singing a couple of the courses that you know. She wanted to do that. And so she wanted like the optimum situation and was totally fine with apparently with a real friend. You know, like, hey, you're gonna-- You want to be a Jonas Brothers by yourself. (laughing) I don't know if there was a second set. I don't know the set list for the Jonas Brothers. I doubt you guys do either. I don't know if there was a chance where you could have sold it is. Let's just give it a couple songs. And then you see what happens. But I don't want to be critical of you because you were in a brutal spot. And I think Seruti's bigger picture thing of like, is this a pattern or is this kind of a one off? Like, I don't know. She used to getting away. And my sense is your girlfriend generally has gotten her way growing up. - And I thought the Jonas Brothers were like over. I thought they were like the cheetah girls. I was like, remember that? Like, yeah, maybe there's like a reunion or something but I thought it was like a-- - 98 degrees is still torn, dude. Like these dudes-- - Well, you have to be on some of these guys. - These guys all, yeah, I think they come back, right? When it's time to get a little cash. But like, I thought it would be a while for the Jonas Brothers to do that. But maybe I'm thinking of one direction. One direction is so much better than those guys. All right, so next email. Big fan of the pod been listening since the SDP day, 6-1 mid 20s. I compare myself to a much shorter performance, Hidu Turkalu lights out shooter when it matters. Hey, there's a terrific player. Great distributor. More than capable. Handling the ball, running offense, but an absolute dud and zero effort guy on defense. Is that where you're scattering a Port-O-Serie? That was a pretty good defensive team. Magic 2009. - But-- - You're funneling a lot of stuff, though. Prime data. - Yeah, that's fair. - Dwight did cover up a lot of the dishes, so I'll give him that. - I'm at a career crossroads and need the mailbox judgment. But think about getting out from my corporate America finance job and having an opportunity to become an AE for a small company in the sports industry. I love sports. I'm much more people relationship guy than Excel guy. And honestly, I think I could thrive in sales. The catch, the guaranteed base is about 30,000 less than what I was previously making and the rest is commission. It's a newer company, so there's no established track record for what someone in this exact role will make other than their estimate. Of course, I love those. Like, how much am I gonna make here? You could make-- - Anywhere. - This. - Five grand, a 35 grand a month. - Of course, the flip side of commission is that one great year could potentially make more than I'd earn over the next four years, climbing the corporate ladder, waiting for the next big promotion, big upside real downside. I've got a mortgage and a wife to support no kids yet. So this isn't exactly 22 year old with three roommates. Fuck it, let's bail territory, but I also wonder, when does being responsible turn into being comfortable? Yeah, man, right? Am I supposed to take the safe corporate job, collect the guaranteed paycheck, get my 3% raises and slowly climb the ladder? Or is this one of those moments where you're actually supposed to bet on yourself? I'm not asking you to make this decision for me. I'm asking, how do you know what a career risk is calculated versus just stupid? Would love to hear what you guys land on this. It's always kind of tough to ask us 'cause we're not in the normal thing, even though there's times where it applies. But I'm always a big, go for it guy. I think the $30,000 number. Now if you're on a strict budget and you take out that 30 grand after taxes or whatever, like what are we talking about? Is it enough that's gonna derail your year financially for a year? That's really what it comes down to. How on board is your wife? It's not like you're writing and saying, "Hey, it's a $100,000 cut, I'm making $200. I'm gonna make $100." And then you're gonna start looking at Carlyce's a little bit closer. You're also gonna start looking at vacations. You're not just gonna go, "Hey, put it on the room." It, you have those moments. Yeah, I'll do. I'm not, I'm not upgrade. To me being rich is like two day FedEx. I'm done, I don't give a shit. 25 extra bucks. I always would tell everybody to kind of go, but it really depends. I think from a budget standpoint, if that first year doesn't go well, what is that going to do to you? That's the first thought that I have on it. Yeah, I mean, I think I would have made a great social studies teacher. Just 25 years in out, don't cross any lines. You're guaranteed employment. I like that type of stuff. Did you go by Kyle? That sounds, no, I don't think so. Unless you're in one of those new age California schools where everyone's like, you know. Our social studies teacher is in high school. Who's gonna call the boys first name? He did not command the room. Oh, Jesus, so you were like meddling him. That's tough. No, he just wanted to call his boys first name. He was a super nice guy, incredibly nice guy. But, you know, I think he got to the point where you'd be like, "Hey, can we watch a movie today? 10 minutes in." He'd be like, "Okay, Jesus Christ, watch over." But I guess my point is like, I like the idea of like, I'm good here. I'll just get my little raise and I'll, you know. I'm locked in. I could plan on doing stuff because I'm gonna plan on having a job that gets incrementally, whatever. So like that's where I lean towards. Like, if you're already, you know, a few years into that and you're looking at, looking at your list of things, you're like, "All right, well, only 18 more years of this." Like, I kinda like the security that brings. And then what's an AE? Like, is that a system executive? What does that mean? - That's an account executive, right? - Account executive maybe. Okay. That's what I thought it was. I don't know. I don't think it'd be administrative anything. But, yeah. Yeah, I know. Pretty new, pretty different, you know. I don't know what they're, you know. If the base is less than it seems like you could have a bad year and they'll keep you around 'cause you're not making that much, I don't know. But it's certainly, I don't think I'd have balls to do it. - The other thing that I'm playing on kids, I'm a house. - Everything you guys said, I don't have any to add on. But, is that, like, he's like, "I want to work in sports." Like, that's kind of, is that working? Like, you're technically working for like a team, but like, you're not doing like the fun parts of, I feel like the things that would like, maybe make you like your job. - That can still be fun though. If you're doing sales, like, it can still be kind of fun, even though I think the hours are a lot heavier. So that's something you need to find out. 'Cause there's a lot of like sales people, remember when I was always around the Celtics nonstop, like, they'd be doing the nine to five thing, and they'd be at every game with clients, you know, just, it was a real, it wasn't just a job, it was a total commitment to a lifestyle. That's not for every family. So you need, yeah, you need to figure that part out. Unless you can't stand your family. And you're like, "Oh, we got the Wizards tonight." - Yeah, you guys moral. (laughing) - Yeah, I mean, that could totally open doors within an organization to even like shift around too. Like, there's probably not gonna get that chance if you're not in that building. So, I think whenever you, yeah, right, you know what I mean. There's people that have crossed over, though, from stuff into the stuff that they really wanted. And I'm always blown away when that happens. But sometimes it's just like, "Hey, if this is a good person, we think they're smart." And we want them in the room. Like, that story can happen too. But what I would say to anybody other than just like the whole, "Oh, you gotta go for it. You gotta go for it every single time." Like, that's not real evaluation of anything. But anytime where I've been like, it's time to move on. I had to know that it wasn't like an in-between. It's almost like something that you feel where you're showing up to the place that you work. And like, okay, I'm done, you know? And whenever I've gotten to that point, like I think all of us flirt with, well, what would happen here? What would I wanna do there? I mean, this is always that tough time of life in your 20s, 'cause it's like, "Hey, yeah, guess what? This is what happens to most people. This is what it's going to be." - It's gonna be late to be a fireman. I'm not sure. - Right. - Actually, it's never too late to be a fireman. - I'm not sure it is. - Yeah, but I don't know if I got to. - I've thought about picking up a shift, dude. I mean, people love firemen. It's crazy. - Yeah, but then, you know, next thing, you know, you're a volunteer fireman and then you're on call there for a little while and you're helping an old man a life. I'm not ready to wipe myself up and he's go, "Oh, I thought I was gonna be a ladder with chicks." Yeah, nope. Ed needs cleaning.
We have time for one more. Yeah, I think we have time for four. I know it's close. I think it's a close enough one, quick enough one. 33, 5, 10, 180, pick up comp. Second wolf stint, Ricky Rubio. Shout out Kenneth Karai. Pass first guy who loves to throw a solid bounce pass. I consider myself a decent handyman. I can fix most things around the house, myself growing up. My dad was adamant about never paying anyone to do a project on the house. Oh, if he was good at stuff, he was much better of these types of things than I am, but I can handle most projects. This brings me to a current issue. I need some new windows and a patio door, water leakage and drafts. It made this an issue to get addressed sooner than later since I live in the Midwest and winters right around the corner. I watched a few YouTube videos and learned quickly. Windows and a patio door may be above my pay grade and I should pony up the money. Yeah, I mean, if the framing is the reason why the door is messed up, like it might not just be like, hey, I took the door out, I have a buddy that can help me carry this thing out and then put the next one in, but you might get in there going, okay, all the framing around this is the real issue. Dude, wife's like, why are we applying for permits? What's going on? So anyway, it's above my pay grade. Should I pony up the money and have a professional handle this? My question is, when I have the pro come in for an estimate, what's the protocol? I've had two come over so far. The first guy, I just let walk around and measure the second guy. Followed him around, yeah. I'm having a third company come in next week. I think this is probably already happened because his email is a few weeks ago. We'll want to know the best way to handle this. If someone who's been to a few estimates in their life and grew up in the construction business, please let me know what to do. Love the show, hang up and listen. Well, I did just have our windows redone and I would definitely recommend not doing that yourself. This seemed insane. But I mean, if he's measuring like 20 something windows, like you're not following this dude around to every window, like making sure that his roars working correctly. Like if it's like a door and you're just like, "Hey, yeah, we want this kind of style." Like this is a problem, whatever, blah, blah, blah. Like sure, hang around. But it's like, you just gotta be like, you know, use some self-awareness. Like, should you, are you lingering in a weird way? Like, no, don't do that. Let him kind of want house the dude to know that he knows a little bit of something. That's just, maybe you can get that out of the way early and then leave him alone. If you need to get a couple of terms off. Just throw a couple of buzzwords at it. Whatever. And then be done, though, you know. - Yeah. - Right, but that's like me telling Steve Nash, be like, "Hey, I used to play a little bit." You just don't, they're never gonna go, oh, no way, really? Tell me about your entire experience. - No, that's true. - It doesn't work. It doesn't matter. Like, "Hey, I'm actually pretty handy." You know, like, I think anytime I've ever done anything like that, not even to the handiness, any of these subjects, you should regret it immediately. 'Cause nobody fucking cares. And if this is a person who's a professional and any professional field, they know all of us are frauds by suggesting like, "Hey, you know, I actually used to do a little bit of this around the house." Anytime I've had to estimate now, knowing this, too, there's a chance the estimate gets a 10% boost if you're a pain in the ass on the sight of the essence. Okay, that happens. 'Cause they start going like, "What's this guy?" You see, he fixed the fucking sink. And so now he's gonna watch me. And he's gonna check the tape measure. And he's gonna say, like, they could be leaving your house factoring in annoyance tax. And bump it up 10%. So it sounds like this guy probably already got it done. But I would tell you a hard and fast rule is to leave them alone. Completely leave them alone. And make it see, if you wanna like present, "Hey, I'm actually gonna be like a great hang. I'm gonna get you cold drinks. You can use the bathroom. I'm not gonna make you go in the woods." All this kind of stuff, like, "Hey, that's fine." But there are, I'm just telling you from some serious first-hand experience, leaving estimates where my father straight up would leave a job being like, "I don't wanna work for this guy." And so I'm gonna bid it higher. Just because I can already tell. It's gonna be a pain in the ass. And then if you get a yes, you're like, "All right, this is great." And then he still regrets it. Yeah. Yeah, well, just to, and shout out to those old guys, like this guy's dad, which just, you know, commit to being a jack of all trades and, you know, have like an anvil in their house. Like, I don't think they're making too many guys like that anymore, but it seems like a lot of old guys like have that in them, like, you know, they're fixing their, they're fixing their standards, they're fixing their car, they're, you know, they're doing the roof stuff, they're, you know, they're making concrete out of shit that got in the shed, you know, I think, I love those old guys, so shout out to them. Those are the kind of numbers we need. Not what percentage of three-year-olds are married in that declining number, or the home ownership always bums me out quite a bit for younger people. But we need to know like, can you do shingling? Like that, if we start putting up some, and we'll do it anyway. If you can, like, Derek Thompson had some, can you build your own deck charts from the 60s to now? That thing could be, you think home ownership is bad. That would be off a cliff. All right, that'll do it for the show today. Thanks to Tom Kevin, all the guys here in Chicago. What's your name again? Jack! - Shout out to Jack. - Shout out to Jack. He told me his name two hours ago, I'm gonna be sorry. Kyle and Sruity, all of our episodes available on Netflix, The Rhyne or Solution, are still sports. (upbeat music)
