Monday Means Test w/Wayne Hawkes and John O'Neill (26/10)

The Monday Means Test with Wayne Hawkes and John O'Neill, hosted by Gareth Hall, centred on Cosmic Crusader's victory in the Cox Plate at Flemington. The panel reviewed the race, praising William Pike's cool, patient ride as one of the best of the year and noting that Cosmic Crusader came from last to win after a demanding campaign that included the Bletchingly, Lawrence Stakes, Memsie, Underwood, Turnbull and Caulfield Cup. Bob Peters, who had wanted to win the Cox Plate since 1973, was celebrated as one of Australia's finest breeders, with the panel noting he runs his operation his own way and has invested heavily in Western Australian racing. Birdman was considered unlucky in second, while Light Infantry Man disappointed. The show also discussed the atmosphere at Flemington with 35,000 in attendance, the debate over whether the Cox Plate should return to Moonee Valley, and whether three-year-olds should contest the race. Other topics included the Melbourne Cup field, the $100,000 paid to the last-placed horse, the merits of the VRC Derby distance, Pride of Jenny's withdrawal from the Empire Rose, and Gareth Hall's new share in Melbourne Cup contender James J. Braddock.

Speaker 2Let's welcome in the team, this is the Monday Means Test. Hello to you, Wayne Hawkes. Morning, Gareth Hall. Morning, Johnny O'Neill. How are you? Hello to you, Johnny O'Neill.
Speaker 3Good morning, my friend. I've got the headgear on after what a wonderful performance by the star in the Cox Plate. So the headgear's on for me. Got plenty at the races when we were beaten on Saturday and well deserved by
Speaker 2the Cosmic Crusader cheerers. Because you did say when I asked you once upon a time, Cosmic Crusader, can you win a group one? You said no. Gareth, why would you keep haunting? I mean, I'm sure we're going
Speaker 3to talk a lot about this horse. Are we going to talk about him now or what do you want to do? Do you know what?
Speaker 2We're going to get straight into it. It was the Cox Plate, the famous Cox Plate, running one at Flemington. And this is how Cosmic Crusader did it. And then after that, I'm going to play you a terrific interview that was conducted on Racing.com by Katie Watts. And for the first or the second time, I've seen Bob Peters cry. But when he cries, you know it's something big. And it was a great interview. It was a great interview from Katie. So we'll play Cosmic Crusader winning the Cox Plate. And then that interview with Bob Peters and Katie Watts after that.
Speaker 4By two lengths, light infantry man asked for the effort. Sir Delius queuing up with blind rays. Warwoven needs a run. They were followed by Aliana down the outside, winding up with Chow Wolf. Sir Delius, blind rays together. Warwoven back to the inside. Birdman's getting through. Aliana down the outside at the clock tower. Birdman with Aliana. Cosmic Crusader. Right down the outside. It's Birdman. Cosmic Crusader trying to pick it up. Cosmic Crusader goes to the front. Cosmic Crusader. It was written in the stars. Wins the Cox Plate. When did you believe that this was the horse? About 20 metres out. When I saw him coming home. But I thought, you know, usually things go wrong. And something gets up in the inside.
Speaker 5Something. But it didn't happen. This is the biggest win. It's the best race in Australia. It's the race we've ever had. When I saw him coming home, but I thought, you know, usually things go wrong and something gets up in the inside, something, but it didn't happen. It's the race of. I don't get speechless very often.
Speaker 6Anyway. How long have you wanted to win a Cox Plate?
Speaker 5Probably since about 1973. I always looked at it as the best race in Australia and I think it's a privilege to have a runner in it.
Speaker 2So that was Bob Peters after winning the Cox Plate with Cosmic Crusade. I think it's the best horse that he's ever had now. Old Comrade was very good. The Katie Queen was very good. But this horse to win a Cox Plate seventh up is an extraordinary performance. He's campaigned this time around for Andrea Leake. On the 25th of July, he won the Bletchingly. And then he turned up on the 15th of August to win the Lawrence. He was placed in a Memsie behind Baywack. He was second in Underwood behind Birdman.
Speaker 3And that was the 19th of September. Yes. So he went 15th of the 8th to the 29th of the 8th in the Memsie. Correct. The 19th of the 9th in the Underwood. Yep. Then he went the 3rd of the 10th in the Turnbull. Yes, and won. Huge win. Yep. And he's gone to the Core Fuel Cup. So he's set from 2,000 to 2,400 on the 17th of the 11th. Yes. And then he's backed up a week later on the 24th of the 11th. To win the Cox Plate. I also say he had an official trial at Caulfield prior to going to the bletching league and would have had a quiet jump out. So effectively there's probably, it's probably nine. I mean, I don't know whether you count the trials, probably the last trial, probably his eighth run in.
Speaker 2Extraordinary. He did a preseason in WA with Michael Grantham. Extraordinary. What an extraordinary horse to do what he did. And, and the key to him too, they learned how to ride him throughout the preparation. They rode him, um, too close in an Underwood stakes and Pikey probably rode him too well in the Caulfield Cup. He had to do what he did from that wide gate to land the one out one back, but he just let him do what he wanted in the Cox Plate. He was last behind Eliana and went straight past her.
Speaker 3One of the greatest rides I've seen. Yeah. It was an extraordinary ride from Pikey. Brave ride too. Very brave. I agree. Um, you know, clearly we knew there was going to be a hectic pace, uh, and the fact that Land Legend missed the start as well was, was really interesting. is it probably had to work a bit harder um we were really confident with land legend being in the race that it would suit light inventory man well he busted he just couldn't he just couldn't keep up um harry got off and just said he just wasn't happy at all with the pace yeah uh i think you know if you go through the race as you say really courageous win very courageous ride and uh and And yet again, to see Leakey and her family and obviously her kids and the strapper and everybody go berserk was, uh, was extraordinary and fantastic for Bob Peters too. So, so for me, I can't see, you know, at the start of the carnival, when it was running early doors, I didn't think it'd get to the Cox plate. And I certainly thought going to a Caulfield cup and then having to back up again after the long prep it had had was almost impossible. Um, again, that turnbull form, what about it? Every year. Yeah. Every year you put a circle around it. So the helmet's on. I got it on Saturday like you've never seen. It was extraordinary after the race. And we've run second this year and we ran second last year. So well done to Bob and I went home soaking. Yes. That was me.
Speaker 7Wayne Hawks. Why are you laughing, Wayne? Well, I'm laughing because I was just writing a few notes down and I just looked up and looked across at you. So the people that can see on racing.com, the people that can't, Are we putting this on Instagram or Twitter or it's going on Twitter? Right. So if you're not sure what Johnny O'Neill looks like, jump on our Twitter because fair dinkum, Johnny, sometimes it's better that people think you're a dickhead than actually do something like this and look like you're a dickhead.
Speaker 3Well, one thing I do want to say, just being a dickhead and one thing I do want to raise here is I did speak to Joanne, my missus last night, who didn't want to go to the race this Saturday and he's not an avid racing fan with me. He does come along, but
Speaker 7I didn't bet you. You didn't walk in like the village people, did you?
Speaker 3No, but I did bet you, my friend, that, and you probably don't remember, but I got told at the races half a dozen times that if Cosmic Crusader beat Birdman, I would go in the Birdman rally. Yes, you did actually. At Moomba with the Birdman outfit on and jump off into the air. Are you doing this? So I'm going to do it. I'm going to honor the bet. Gareth, you were in strife, 100 to go, because I was putting you in the Crusaders outfit and you were diving into the Arras. So now, Birdman Rally Moomba Monday, I think it is. How good is that? I'll be dressed up in a bird type of suit. Correct. And I'll be straight off the side into the drink.
Speaker 7Great work here. Ross out the back, please make sure we get that out on every social media so everybody in the country knows about Johnny O'Neill and he cannot get out of this. No, I'll be done. Like Gareth Hall promised to take us to lunch and he still hasn't. I'll give you the helmet, but I'll have the beard out for you. You wear whatever you want.
Speaker 3I'll have a beard, but I'll get a beak and I'll have the. And do you know what?
Speaker 7We'll find someone to make it for us. And for all the people this shit can, yeah, to be fair, to be fair, right? Because they all do all of this, right? But you've stuck your nose out, you've got it whacked, and now you're going to come through with the goods. I say that's a good yes, yes, yes.
Speaker 2In saying that, he did change his tune with Cosmic Crusader after the Turnbull Stakes. Yeah, but you know what? That's okay. I'll
Speaker 7tell you what I want. There's only one thing in life you want other than health, to be fair. to be fair, right? You just want the Sunday Herald Sun or the Sunday Telegraph on Saturday morning or the Courier Mail on Saturday morning. It always looks easier today than what it did on Saturday. So that quaddie, it was not that hard last Saturday, but last Saturday morning it was a bugger of a thing, wasn't it?
Speaker 2What did you make of the WS Cox Plate, Wayne?
Speaker 7It was amazing. We knew going in that it was going to be six or seven horses that had a real big chance in the race, and there were very, you know, the good horses stepped up. It was, it wasn't the best Cox Plate ever, but it doesn't matter because you can only run with what there is to run in. There wasn't Northerlies and Sunlines and these horses, but we didn't need them.
Speaker 3He might be Northerly and Sunline, this horse. Well, no. But you can't do what he's done. No, he's not. Well, he's won the Turnbull. He's not. He probably shouldn't have won the Caulfield Cup if he drew a game. He's won the Cox Plate. He's won the Bletchingley. He's won the, like, I don't know what else you can do. Hey, Northerly couldn't do that. No, could not.
Speaker 7Okay, but I don't love comparing horses of yesteryear. But the reason why he's not Northley is because Northley had to race against horses like Sunline and Lonro. They've got panels on these horses that are running to them. I don't know about that. Well, I used to be involved, so I actually reckon I do know. So I reckon I've got some idea. Yeah, you do. 100%. That's my opinion, but that doesn't matter. I mean, compare him to Northley to a point, but you know what? Don't compare him to Northley. Compare cosmic crusader to cosmic crusader because you just read out his, his runs this time in, I mean, he must be an iron horse that's, that's, that's, that's what he is so to have a crack and to do what they've done and to nail it, I thought was amazing. The ride of William Pike is as good as you'll see, you know, for jockeys listing now, I mean, you, you just got to go and watch that race. Now I'm assuming, and I've never been out there and to quote my father what you think happens out there and what happens out there is two different things it's very easy losing the weight sitting you're losing mate you might be out there i haven't lost telling you i haven't lost any weight all year you're looking trim mate i haven't lost any yes so the bottom line is sit and wait because you don't you're just every every most jockeys today are trying to beat the bloody horse home i know it's a head rush and everything like that but you don't win anyway so you know when you when you got the head of steam up pike's ride was amazing when i first watched i thought oh did j mac go too early and no he didn't but i mean he popped out and presented to do his job but pike just got on the back of j mac and uh pike was uh should have come in to thank james because he uh he helped him get the job done but what actually really helped win cosmic crusader win the race was this if the cox plate was at mooney valley cosmic crusader would not win have won he needed the whole length of the flemington straight to actually get the job done and it was just such a such a typical pike ride to be sitting back and you know i mean he was getting held up held up and then he just waited and thought oh well i'm i'm traveling behind a great horse you know well woven was in behind him he was getting held up you know he you know he he didn't how did he run what did you think about that nah look people said i look he should have run closer he's noted about that but he wasn't for i i didn't like him you did the kieran ma willie should the three-year-olds run you know kieran said no and you asked me the other week and i said no they they shouldn't be running and everyone always fantasizes about the three-year-olds in the cox plate i heard you early today gary saying that but we don't need the three-year-olds to be bolstering up our cox plate field so it does make it a better race well having every extra horse in makes it a better race these small fields drive me insane i mean as i said the other day autumn glows race the other day was nothing sexy to watch whatsoever it was sexy if you owned her sexy if you you know you you you're bred to wear family or you know by the same stallion and things like that but i mean that was not a great watch if you're a mad autumn glow fan yes but from a yeah from a spectacle of her winning it was fantastic but as an overall look at the whole race the small fields drive me mad so you know and then and then the thing about this is the cox plate is the cox plate for one reason and one reason only it always throws something up there's always something that comes out of it mate you didn't even look at us like saint george birdman really i mean he should have won there's no doubt about no all right well i'm allowed my opinion and you can say well you know what you can disagree the birdman should have won it was no one's fault he had the best run in the race mate he's he's all but nearly won and and he was getting held up held up one thing pike didn't do was pike didn't lose his momentum he he might have got held up for a stride or two but he didn't leave it lose his momentum birdman lost his momentum halfway up the straight and then to pick yourself up and get going again against the best of whatever is around birdman should have won but in all of these races gareth is always those hard luck stories and you know what winners are
Speaker 2we'll continue to break down this cox plate on the means test straight after this this is giddy up on a monday morning
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 04009 736 736 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall i'm
Speaker 3concerned about sir delius three weeks between runs a mile to 2000 heavy track chasing a long way out just concerned he might be a bit flat third up and you know maybe i mean the way the gay trains is she's she's very um not going to say hard but she's very fitness focused on those horses and and really pushes them so i'd be in a position sorry again no no no i mean i love it okay she and adrian they're unbelievable but look again it'll be interesting to see personal we're talking about sir delius i wouldn't have thought that sir delius could turn the tables on cosmic crusader in the cox play off off that run really chance no chance no chance no chance well that's ridiculous that's um and i would have thought aliana will run a nice very elegant third or so in the cox plate and then go on and so who's the horse to beat in the cox play oh look i think i think the horse that won the table cosmic crusader it and it and it and cosmic crusader and birdman in my opinion are the horses to beat in the cox play
Speaker 2so you did say that then after bob accepted in the corfield cup you said he was no chance to win the cox plate but wayne um we'll talk about this after 10 o'clock but um you didn't think he should have run in the corfield cup either so no i didn't no no did you still think he could win the cox plate after competing in the corfield cup
Speaker 7no no i went i went off him because of the uh because the corfield cup run and having a backup a week later but same thing from purely from a training trainer's point of view the only ones that can make those make those decisions are the people that are involved because they know what they're working with yeah it's easy for us to sit here and go ah you know aliana should run in a melbourne cup and whatever but when they're not big enough and strong enough the trainers know where they're at and you have to take their advice so so if they
Speaker 3back the horse up again how do champions how do they beat it well
Speaker 7they don't really well no no you can because you're going can you but well you're going if you're not thrown well i get it that's how they get seven or eight run and one like but hang on remember one thing that one two things that i say the most bad barriers and afterthoughts he was last
Speaker 2that doesn't matter what barrier i don't know i don't know how they beat it i mean i'd love two things two things i
Speaker 7generally say week after week i talk about bad barriers and you talk about afterthoughts for these good horses you can't keep going to the well and going to the well and going to the well because eventually the world dries up oh yeah i don't
Speaker 2know if it's ever drying up because it is because they don't
Speaker 7because they're not all black caviar they don't want to be a black caviar they don't want to be a black caviar they don't want to be a black caviar they don't want to be a black caviar they don't want to be a black caviar they don't want to
Speaker 3win win win well i got it i got a note on my instagram i got a lot of instagram notes actually i'll get to that i just want to say brett heffernan yes who has followed cosmic crusader he sent me a note and said i know that you had mixed reviews and whatever it may be but i backed it first up when i got beaten and i followed it all the way through so i'm tipping
Speaker 2he's buying a house yes well well under well done brett we'll continue on the means test next this is giddy up on a monday morning
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome back to
Speaker 2giddy up this is the monday means test so we'll continue on our chat with cosmic crusader um so bob peters yes i mentioned this at the start of the show he's just a different individual bob like he what do you what do you mean well i've admired him from afar and i've known him for a long time and i've known him for a long time and i've known him for a long time now bob peters yep so he was a car salesman when he first started off his business and when you interview and you hear bob you think how has this man become basically a billionaire after being a car salesman so obviously he's he's he's had a great
Speaker 7obviously sell cars um so why because he's a bit reclusive yeah a little bit but he's
Speaker 2got a great business mind way he's probably sick of dealing with people so he's taken a big step back in his latter years good on him and then he was able to set this racing empire up from scratch from the bottom up and he's now arguably one of the greatest ever breeders that this country's ever seen no doubt um and his record speaks for that speaks for itself but bob does it bob's way he's had many great trainers over the years but if you're not on the same page as bob regardless of the success that you've had well he says well it's just not working we move on cosmic crusader has got nz next to his name because he had a disagreement with john massara so he decided to move that man i think to new zealand bob was telling me that he was going to move that man to new zealand and he was going to so he's not scared to who he disagrees with um and he uses trainers a little bit left field because he's used chris waller before and he's left for chris danny o'brien he's moved on for some of the big trainers freddie strained for him sure
Speaker 3they did over the journey smith had great
Speaker 2success so um he gets trainers that listen to him and do it bob's way and andrea leak obviously has a relationship with bob peters and they talk every day but andrea wouldn't be training those horses if she didn't listen to bob um they went to a corfield cup which was an afterthought uh because the cox plate was still their main aim so hats off to bob to be able to do that and to do it his way and then win a cox plate that he's been dreaming of for so long and this is the race that he's always wanted to win and he does it with that horse cosmic crusader with the preparation that he's had i reckon only a horse owned by bob peters bob peters could do that in a way yeah and look
Speaker 3the interesting thing is in the interview that we heard a little earlier to know that he's invested so much money set these businesses up and 1973 i think he said okay was the time that he decided that
Speaker 7he was 53 years
Speaker 3ago my god goodness me so and you know what let me tell you the amount of money he's put in the passion that he's shown for western australian racing and for breeding and the fact that he has enabled a number of his only travel with local trainers, but to send them and allocate them across the country. Let's take our hat off to him. Um, he'll be somebody that is remembered in racing and to be honest, um, should be remembered for being a wonderful contributor. Is he in the hall of fame?
Speaker 2He's definitely in the hall of fame. I interviewed him, yeah, for the hall of fame.
Speaker 3Is he in the Australian hall of fame? He should be. Um, well, that's what I'm saying. If he's not, he should be.
Speaker 2Yeah. And, um, Cosmic Crusader is the best horse I reckon he's had. We'll ask him. He's going to join me a little later on.
Speaker 3Let me tell you the other one who we can't miss out on, and I know you're a huge fan of him, but it's a big effort for, for Willie Pike. I mean, I know, I know. I know you're very close with him, Hawksy, and I know that he came and rode for you and your brother and your father over the COVID period. But let's go back and have a look at Willie's scenario. He's not getting COVID jabs, so he's not allowed to ride in some areas. He left. He came and rode where he could ride. He's gone through all of those challenges. He's definitely uprooted his family, I would imagine, during that period, which would have been very difficult. He's been an elite rider in Western Australia for the punters, for the owners, for the leading trainers over there for years. And for him to come and celebrate the way that he did on Saturday, he always gives up his time, G. So if you call him, he's always available to have a chat. We had a really good chat after he won the Turnbull, and he wasn't sure the horse was going to go to the Caulfield Cup either. I just take my hat off to him. He works so hard. As I said, Hawks, you would know. More about the ins and outs of Pikey than we do. But I just salute him. I think it was an incredible result.
Speaker 7And it was a brave ride. It was probably, you know what? I'd go as far as to say it's probably the ride of the year. We talk about in footy terms the best try and the best goal kick and the best mark in AFL. But you know what? Show me. In a big race, under big pressure, show me. Look, there'll be a better ride at Geelong next week or Bendigo on Wednesday, probably. But I'm talking a big, big race like the Cox play. It'll be cool, calm, and collected. And that's why the Zaras and the Melums and the J-Max and the D-Olivers and those guys are in the elite status because they just count to three, and they're just not in a rush. And what they do is, like I said before, they try not to beat the horse home. And that's what Pike did. But I reckon the biggest thing that he's done, and I actually told him, stopped doing it, was when he'd come in and go, oh, I don't know whether I rode it that good. And I was a bit too close in the Caulfield Cup. I said, mate. I said. Where were you? You drew a bad barrier. You went across. You got in the 1-1. The half mile, I said, was just put in and take out. If you could bet in the run, you're $1.07. Do you know what I mean? So it wasn't, he didn't ride that horse upside down. Yes, he might be a better horse ridden off the pace, but sometimes barriers dictate where these jockeys go.
Speaker 2So great ride by William Pike. Is there a case, and this is just me looking from afar, is there a case that we, like, why don't we see more campaigns? Like a cosmic crusader. Because most horses today can't do it. Or do you train them like. This is the horse. Is it the horse or the way that you prepare them?
Speaker 7No, it's the horse. Because years ago, right, we could have, we could give them hormone shots. Back when I was a kid, you could keep them bigger and stronger. The horses were stronger. Now, you know what the, you know what the deal is? This is the deal. The horse today is so much weaker. And I said that to my father not long ago. I said, yeah. And so are a lot of people riding them and leading them around, a.k.a. humans in this world that we're not as tough as what. As what grandma and great grandma used to be. I mean, God, they had pneumonia and were still getting up and going to work. We're going to get a doctor's certificate for seven days. Well, you should if you've got pneumonia. You get my point. Yes, I do. So horses aren't as strong as what they used to be. You know, I mean, I mean, we got to go through drug free. We're not allowed to, we're legally not allowed to take anything. Nothing. But that's better. Well, no, I don't, I don't agree anymore. I mean, I'll tell you why. Because my biggest problem, and I'm sure every other trainer will agree with me now, is not tendons, suspensories, chipped knees, chipped joints. That was when I was a kid. That's, that's how it used to be. The training surfaces have got so much better. We're not breaking that many down on the, on the, on the training tracks. You hardly ever break a horse down race day. You know, we really, really aren't. You know what I mean? But you know, they just, they just go on a miss. But the thing about it is the biggest problem that we have today is throats. So if, for the people listening that are asthmatics and have all those unfortunate issues and lung issues.
Speaker 2Mate, imagine. Imagine they couldn't have the puffer and things like that. But in saying that way, and I know what you, where you're coming from, but Kira Ma does it a lot. He races his horse. Like Middle Earth hasn't missed a big dance on the way to the Melbourne Cup. There's certain trainers that will be, that, that will give their horses a campaign like Andrew.
Speaker 7But when you, but when you've got 600 horses behind you, you can afford to miss them, hit left, right, and center. And you can afford to do that. Now there was a train at Flemish in the other day that, you know, someone said, oh gee, Kira Ma's training better than you. And, and the trainer said, well, I've got, you know, 30, 40 in work and I've got a half look after mine a little bit. And he could afford to, you know, churn him and burn him. And I'm, and I'm being serious because owners aren't replenishing. Horses are leaving stables and they're, and they're not, they're not repeat offenders for coming back into the industry.
Speaker 3That's true. So Hawksy, here's a question I ask. And certainly in relation to this horse, um, and you're talking about Kieran leaving horses in for longer periods of time and trying to get along. Trying to get a little bit more longevity or, or running them or giving them.
Speaker 2But you've seen it with a few of them, like on Saturday, for instance, Chocolates, the campaign that she's having towards the Melbourne Cup. Yep. Middle Earth, the, the program that she's having. There's, there's, there's a ton of examples. Like that King's Valley must be tough. If they're tough though, if they're weak. But all of his horses are tough. It's not just one, like a one-off lane.
Speaker 3The question I want to ask you though, Hawksy, now, if you go back over the journey, whether they are athletes or whether they're horses, which are athletes as well, and you go back 25 or 30 years, they had a few runs, you put them out for three months. They got as fat as me. Then you get them back in, you get them fit again. I think that data, stats, analytics, feeding, all of these processes are measured a hell of a lot better than what they used to be. Now I'm not saying in the past things weren't right. All I'm saying is, elite athletes now, like the AFL footy players, they don't finish up finals time the end of September and go and have 27,000 beers, 400 pies and come back to training nine kilos heavier than what they were when they finished. Right? So the process there is it's a 12 month scenario and you know that better than anyone, planning horses and finding races. So maybe in some of these instances, it's not like giving horses four or five runs, tipping them out for 12 weeks, unless they need to grow, unless they're immature. It all gets back to
Speaker 7the horses being tough. And that's what it is. And when we're picking out one here, one there, one, that's all we're picking out. Go and get the worst horses and see how you go, belt and shit out of them and just run them, run them, run them, because they'll fall apart.
Speaker 3Yeah. I mean, the training story in Hong Kong is a lot different, isn't it? To what it is here.
Speaker 7You're not putting horses out for three months. No, no, it's not a lot different. It's the fairest place. It's because where, where it's the fairest is you all got the same conditions. You're all, you know, you're all dipping into the same container, so to speak. You can get all your feed from anywhere you want, you know, the best feed you want from New Zealand, you can, you can import into Hong Kong, but as far as the training facilities go, you've all got the same thing in Australia. You can train them 37,000 different ways. So I get what you're saying. You'll say Kieran's got Fingal and he's got the farm and he utilizes them, which a lot of, a lot of people, a lot of people do to keep the horses up.
Speaker 3I think there's no doubts. And George, and he's a good example of a horse that, um, had really bad feet, Hawksy, as we know, and they've gone through and changed his diet, changed a heap of things around that to enable him. I think there's a really good chance to say that if that horse was being trained at Flemington or in the old days at Caulfield, that he wouldn't be doing what he's doing. He is trained out of a paddock at Fingal, up and down the hills. He goes in for one gallop at Cranbourne generally. But Lindsay Park would be doing that too. And Lindsay Park would be doing that a hundred, a hundred years ago. I mean, Freedy's tried it years ago too, right? Down at Markdale. And now they train at Jonathan Munns down at Pinecliffe. Plenty of people have done it and tried it. Danny O'Brien's got his place down the beach and yeah, I get it.
Speaker 7I remember when I was a kid, we used to send the horses down to Aldinga Beach to Richard Crozer. They'd race Saturday and Sunday morning they'd get into Richard Crozer and stay there for three or four days and go back. That was in the eighties. Yeah. I mean, the only two people in South Australia that were pre-trained their horses were John Hudson. Lloyd was doing it for years too, even at Flemington, wasn't he? Correct. I just find it
Speaker 2interesting that some trainers can get their horses to compete during a busy time, week in, week out. And I wonder too, and this is Brad Spice has actually text through, I reckon, I wonder if the heavy sand and the pre-season, the Cosmic Crusader would have had in WA made a difference. You disagree with that, obviously, Wayne, with your facial expression just then. But I've got no doubt that would have to have some impact. Would it? I don't know. I don't know. I'm asking you, the horse trainer.
Speaker 7Okay. It's from a pure horse. From my point of view, it's all bullshit. Because you know what the bottom line is? If the horse is good, it's good. Isn't there a horse called, hang on. Can you, can you BS, please? Isn't there a horse called, isn't there a horse that costs $10,000 online? Go and buy another 500 of them and see if you can find one as good as she's. Hang on, hang on. No, you won't. Let me out. You won't. See if you can buy another one.
Speaker 3You need to buy more than 500 of them.
Speaker 7So we are talking about very, very, very few small amount. It's not the best horse. Go and find the worst horse that Bob Peters has and give it a cosmic crusade of performance and a race preparation and see where you end up. And you know where the rules are with that?
Speaker 3The worst horse that he's got, he either bought for seven or 800,000 or a million. Yeah. Or he bred it. Yeah, absolutely. A
Speaker 2lot of people have had success buying Bob's horses online, especially in WA. Of course. Because he doesn't need them. He just moves them on. Yeah. Let's talk about the beaten brigade here. Bird man. Very good, Johnny. Ran huge. Great. Do you agree with that? With Wayne, he should have won?
Speaker 3Well, look, I mean, look, it was a great run. One thing that we did say leading up is that there was going to be brutal pace and Ben had to wait. He had to wait because we. He didn't want to use all of his stamina to get there and then get picked up. So I think, look, he got held up at a crucial stage. I think he ran out of his skin. I thought it was an unbelievable ride from Benny. He did everything he said he was going to do. And, you know, to be honest, 150 out, I could see Cosmic Crusader coming, but I just thought we had enough break to be able to win. And Eliana was the one I was concerned about, but I don't think she's going as well as what she was.
Speaker 2Is she overrated, Eliana?
Speaker 3No, I don't. I think she's a really good horse. And look, one thing you do find with those mares, and this is why Chris definitely, in my opinion, won't run it in the, he just won't run it in the cup. I don't know whether he's announced that or not. And I'm only giving you my opinion. Eliana's not going to the cup. No, well, there you go. He'll put her away and she'll come back unbelievably well. I think she's chanced to go to the champion stakes. Yeah, okay. Is Birdman going to the champion stakes? I think it'll depend on what Chris and Ozzy want to do. Like, I mean, he's had a big campaign, Birdman. He ran very well. Did he go to Brisbane?
Speaker 2Yes, he won the Durban Cup. Yeah, he did. So he's had a lot of racing.
Speaker 3But the interesting thing is Chris sends them to the farm for three or four days from Flemington after they run here just to give them a bit of a chill. So if he's bouncing and he's happy, he may go there. If not, he'll give him a break. Ozzy will make the call.
Speaker 7The other thing with that is you start looking at Australian cups and you work your way backwards. There's Australian Cup Day. You've got to have at least two runs before the Australian Cup and you go, bloody hell. These horses are in the playoffs. They've been in the paddock for about three minutes. So if you keep going through to Cup Week and the last day of the Cup Week, you are literally doing yourself out of a summer campaign in Melbourne. You're probably just going to just concentrate on Sydney in the autumn.
Speaker 3Tria Wolf, huge. Great run. Really, really good run. He ran good for having to back up
Speaker 7from week to week and travel to Melbourne. He was seventh up.
Speaker 3Unbelievable. They've done a great job with that horse. He's off an injury as well. Like, it's very hard to get horses back off any injury. No. But he's off an injury. Joe Pryde, we should take a hat off to him. I thought St.
Speaker 2George was huge. Yeah. Who's a better chance, St. George or Middle Earth than a Melbourne Cup? St. George. Okay. St. George. Kieran reckons Middle Earth or has he changed his mind?
Speaker 3Oh, I don't know. I mean, I think St. George and the horse that won the Geelong Cup point a law from our perspective are our two chances.
Speaker 2I think we're going to go to an early oh no because this is regarding Sir Delius. So I'm going to take a break. We'll come back with our oh no straight after this. This is the Monday Means Test.
Speaker 1Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall. Sing it, Gareth.
Speaker 7My oh no is myself.
Speaker 2What? Which is rare. Ask Jimmy. Inventory man in the weekend preview top four, Molly. I took a pun on light inventory man. I thought that he'd be on pace, but you know, those three-year-olds made him outside of his comfort zone to get across in the early part. He missed a kick slightly. And as Harry Coffey pointed out, he was at his top for far too long. So I misread that, Johnny, unfortunately.
Speaker 3Well, I think we all misread that. As I said, we thought, I mean, light inventory man always runs very well when Jenny puts her pace on. So as soon as Bon Ho's horse was going to lead. We thought we were going to be in good shape, but no good at all. Was that worth doing that?
Speaker 7Spending 200 grand to run the Cox play? Obviously not when you get beat 20 lengths. What price did it start, that horse? Did anyone think it had a chance? 40 to 1.
Speaker 2I thought it had a chance if it repeated.
Speaker 7I mean, seriously, it's a last start group one winner. To go into it.
Speaker 2In track record time to beat She's Alibi, he would have started favourite. Of course he would have had a chance.
Speaker 7No, no, but I'm saying look at the market. The market shows that no one gave it an absolute chance whatsoever. So Moonee Valley loved it. It was 200 grand back into their pocket.
Speaker 3Yep. I've got plenty of Bon Ho's if you want them. Yeah, let's go.
Speaker 2You've got one with Sir Delius. You want to play the grab from Adrian Bott? Yeah, sure. Let's do that. This was, um, I think it was on channel seven with Jason Richardson there, straight after the races, what he had to say about Sir Delius.
Speaker 6Look, obviously you didn't get the result we set out for, but the horse is in great order. Um, I thought he's improved as expected off that last run. The thing with him is I think there's still a significant amount of progress. Improvement to, to come.
Speaker 3It's interesting. I've got a text message from, uh, from Brett Fitzpatrick, who is a, uh, quite a, uh, quite a passionate racing guy. And he sort of sent me a note through saying that he finds it very frustrating when he follows all of the media and all of the updates and the stuff, and he's a punter and they made it very clear, uh, that Sir Delius was primed third up, a hundred percent ready to go. It was his race. Um, clearly it was, uh, it was well backed and well in the market. And then, um, and then body comes out saying it wasn't there. It's got more improvements. So look, you know, I suppose these things can get away from trainers or whatever it may be, but I just wanted to highlight that because I mean, Brett, you know, you're not believing that, are you? Well, I'm just calling it as an, I know Brett's Brett wanted to raise it. I wanted to raise it on air and I think it's important. So I don't think the, I told you the other day, he chased from a mile up to 2000. I don't think the horses, I think the horse is a very, very good horse, but I don't think the horse is going as well
Speaker 2as what I agree with you there. I don't think that Adrian Gay would not, would have him a run short for a Cox plate wave. He looked pretty, he looked unbelievable in the man.
Speaker 7He didn't say he, hang on. I think the quote was he had, he's, there's more improvement. Yes. Now that, now that doesn't mean that doesn't mean to say that you weren't fit enough to run and win a Cox plate. That was pulled his brains out. It was up on the pace over racing. Well, it went 200 yards and was never going to finish the race. I mean, so, I mean, I, I understand that the, the average person probably can't see that, but dead set, go back and watch the replay of the race and watch how he was too, too fresh, too Revy, too keen. And that's why he didn't finish the race off. Now, Adrian, of course can say there's more improvement to come because who's, who says there, who says there isn't. Yeah, I agree. Correct. So no one's saying that he was fat under done going in. Yeah. Adrian didn't say that. Another thing is to be fair, straight after the race, he was full of emotion. You're full of disappointment. You're full of, sometimes you're full of happiness because it can work both ways. And people say some things that afterwards they go, I wish I hadn't said that. Darren Gouchy won at Caulfield Guineas on line run. So it's the greatest horse he's ever ridden. 15 minutes later, I kicked him. And in the, in the presentation, I said, superimposed, wasn't that good? And he went, oh, geez, I forgot about him. So that's the reverse. So sometimes you get, you're getting beaten and you're saying things that you just, you know what? There's a great line. Never make a decision race day because. The, uh, you know, the, the head rush is, is not there, but he over raced a buggery that horse and he was never, ever going to finish off after he went 200 yards. Now he probably isn't going as good as what he is. And he's a five, six year old bull. So, you know, I mean. Springtime in the bulls. Yep. I mean, where, where's he? Maybe he's not, he's not, yeah. Should he be gilded? I mean, they'll, they'll, they won't do that now. No, you'll go to start, yeah. So where's he going to go to start? He's not going to stand.
Speaker 3What's he worth as a, as a. I don't know.
Speaker 7He's not going to stand at Coolmore.
Speaker 3No. He's not going to stand at Newgate.
Speaker 7He probably goes to New Zealand. He won't stand at Widden.
Speaker 3He'll go to New Zealand, wouldn't he? And stand there. Probably. Yeah. Probably. Breed some nice staying horse.
Speaker 7One of those farms down there would probably love to have him and. Yeah. Cause he's a good looking horse. He is a good looking horse. And he has, he has got a great CV and he'll get a hundred plus mares in New Zealand. And that's where he will be. He is not going to be at one of the best four or five studs in the, in the Hunter, I would assume. Now the people owning him right now would be going, oh, how do you say that? Well, it's pretty simple. Unless you win the Golden Slipper and you buy Coolmore's Stallion Home Affairs, that's where you're getting the $30 million for guest house. So everyone looks at these cults going, all the money. You only get the money with the big ticket items. Now, people will say, but Sir Dillius is a big ticket item. People in Australia don't want to breed to stayers. We really need to. We should be. We should be having a crack.
Speaker 2The other owner I've got clearly is. So you can't win a champion stakes if you go with Sir Dillius. No chance. No chance. And it doesn't look like. Oh, Aleana and Birdman's still a question mark. I think they're still in work looking at Riser, but.
Speaker 7Yeah, but no one's making any decisions now. He won't make his mind up for another three, four days. He doesn't need to, right? No, no. You only have to put the horse and change the stable return when the horse leaves. So if the horse is sitting at Flemington and Cranbourne or Ballarat right now, they're still in the stable, Gareth. So things will change in the next couple of days.
Speaker 3And I think we're looking. My other owner, I'm looking for a discount voucher if I can get one. Oh, that's a good one. Yeah, that's a good one. I think we're looking for a discount voucher if we can get a discount voucher if we can get a discount voucher at the dry cleaners, because anybody who watched race four in Sydney on Saturday, Kieran Starr, Jason Collette's ride, that was, that was a full blown projectile vomit all over the front of my brown suit and my beautiful pale blue shirt that I wore. I'd say, I'd say it's, I'd say it's, it's, it's the worst ride I've seen in 25 years. I've got another, I've got another. Race four? That's a big. That's a big. I'm telling you. Yeah. Race four, Sydney, Saturday, Kieran Starr is the. Mate, there's a field of five. Yeah, I know. He could have just dropped his hands, gone back to last and pulled all the way around him and still won. Did I not say that before looking at Autumn Glow when she won the other day?
Speaker 7The small fields are shocking.
Speaker 3I'm looking for discount on the dry cleaning. I've got a lot of.
Speaker 7I can't get the vomit out. Yeah, yes. Yes, Wayne. Wasn't. What were you skiting? Something about me? Well, there's definitely no no about you, my friend.
Speaker 8What? Wayne looks as if to keep himself busy for a few hours after his previous run. I'm not saying.
Speaker 3Did you find out what he's been up to? He went to his office and he actually had a shower. He must have been feeling hot and sweaty. This is Hawksy, right? So he goes to Adelaide, goes and controls the environment, takes three over, goes bang, bang, wins the first one, and what's the go? He's at home in his jocks at his grandmother's watching the Cubs play. Okay, that sounds bad in seven ways. And I will say, I hope we've got the footage. Can we put it up? Because we have the video footage. His grandma sent it to us, and we want to put it up. Hang on, hang on, hang on, hang on. And I'll tell you one thing. You've trimmed up that much. Those Kelvin Kleins you had on, you'll be up on those big billboards. I might get you up on the billboards with the Kelvins.
Speaker 2Hopefully you weren't wearing the underwear that saw you on the front page of the Herald Sun all those years ago. It was page three.
Speaker 3Don't exaggerate. And I've got to tell you, the thing I was worried about, Hawks, I didn't know you wore the man nappy underneath after the Kelvin Kleins.
Speaker 2I've got a big break in you.
Speaker 7I've got a big break in your story too, Kim. It can wait. What, please? What is it? This is. Hang on. No, no, no. Hurry up. Can we get the footage? Hurry up. I'm going to ask your nana. Keep going, son. Keep going. I want to ring your nana and ask her. Do you want me to whack you now? Yeah. Nana died last year. Oh, no. Oh, that's my auntie. Oh, no. I'll tell you what. Was she related to your nana, your auntie? Yeah, it was daughter. Yeah, she looks like it. Sorry. That's why I got confused. But okay, so what happened is I won race two, I won race four, and then I had like three hours between races. Yes. So I went back to my auntie and uncle's place where I was staying, and I had a shower. And they went, because it was just hot, it was pretty hot in Adelaide, I had a shower. And they said, oh, the Cox Place, you know, they're behind the barrier, so I come running out in my t-shirt and my jocks. That's what happened. So then I get back to the races, and I'm there for the last race, and Terry McAuliffe goes, so, Cox Place, how did you watch it? And I wrote, and I said, this is off here, I said, I watched it in my jocks, being a smartass. I said, I watched it in my jocks. Ha, ha, ha. I didn't expect him to go out there and tell the whole world on racing. Okay, so it was off the record. So thanks, Terry, for saying that.
Speaker 3I didn't see the back. Do you wear the G-banger? The jock? I did that
Speaker 7once, and if you Google me with that, you'll see it. But we don't need to go back there.
Speaker 2Anyway, anyway. Goodness me. The way I know it was you. It was you. It was you. It was you. More for Phil on Cox Place Day. I would have loved to have had you at Flemington, but there's some big breaking news. Pride of Jenny is out of the Empire Rose, so she won't nominate for the Empire Rose. She's still getting over that setback that she had before the King Charles, so she might take on the Mayor, Autumn Glow, and the Champions, Miles. So no, I don't know what price she is now, so she is out, unfortunately.
Speaker 3Wow. Well, there you go. So that probably, I mean, Tony would be, and Kieran would always be on the side of the side of caution. They've done an incredible job getting her back after everybody wanted her to be retired. She's come back and gone bang, bang. So just, I mean, Tony will look after her anyway. He loves her. So if she's not right to go to the mile, he'll wait and he'll probably go to Perth. And if she's not right to travel, he'll wait and probably come back in the autumn, I would
Speaker 2have thought. So obviously, she was always, I thought she was a better chance to, like more likely than not unlikely to run in the Empire Rose, but she's just not a hundred percent. So she's not the Empire Rose. I'm just having a look now.
Speaker 7She's not the Empire Rose. What's the horse around second, a Lady Shenandoah?
Speaker 2Lady Shenandoah. I'll recommend anyone to get on right now. Changing Colours? $4. So she's in the pack. Changing Colours. So Shenandoah's
Speaker 7in the race, but Changing Colours is out. Jenny's out. Gee, the race is dropping off.
Speaker 2Surfing Bird's there. The horse that won the
Speaker 7invitation on Saturday in Sydney. Is it going to come in and back up? I don't think so.
Speaker 2I don't think so. But yeah, Pride of Jenny is out. She was the 325 or she won't be nominated. So there you go. That is, breaks my heart. That's a lacy boulevard race. This will be your
Speaker 7greatest show ever. The only one you ever mention is J-Mac. Because you spoke about all of your favourites that you'd all just deny.
Speaker 3Is Trish at the moment in the paddock? Yes. J-Mac would be happy.
Speaker 2She'd be over the moon if she's not there. So Lady Shenandoah probably starts pretty short. I'll be backing her now, $4. Jenny's been with Mac as kryptonite over the years.
Speaker 3Mate, if
Speaker 7Pride of Jenny's
Speaker 3out of the market, which you're saying, that's about 33%. So a third off, $4.50.
Speaker 7Lady Shenandoah will be $6.00 to $4.00. Yep. She'd be $2.00 or $5.00 favourite. And to be fair, deservedly so.
Speaker 2Get on, Wayne. Get your Bet365 account. I don't have a punting account. Oh, we'll bet for you then.
Speaker 7Hand on my heart, I don't have a punting account. Not at all.
Speaker 2It won't last long. I'm tipping it will be the favourite Lady Shenandoah. Wait till you get married.
Speaker 7You won't have a tipping account, a betting account either. You won't be allowed to.
Speaker 2Demi will be listening. Get on, Demi, right now. And you won't be allowed to race any more horses. Well, yeah. Sorry? I wasn't allowed to, baby. He's in one. He's got in one. Did you get out?
Speaker 3Are you in a Melbourne Cup horse? That's what I'm getting at. That's my own horse. What happened there?
Speaker 2No, she allowed me to go into this horse. No, no, no, no, no. What is that horse?
Speaker 7Can I say or not? Can I say or not? You can say whatever you want. Gareth rings me, goes, oh, I'm in trouble. I said, again? Yeah. So you've just moved down to Parkdale, 3195 for the bride. Yeah, 3195. What do you need to do? He said, I've just gone into another horse and I told Demi I wouldn't. I said, let me tell you something, mate. You're not the only bloke that's engaged or married that's lied to the wife about a horse.
Speaker 5Really? Whoever does that?
Speaker 7Every bloke listening right now, chuckling away. How many blokes say, I'm not allowed to buy another horse and they just sneak one in? But just don't invoice me for three months. I've heard them all.
Speaker 2So what's the horse? What's the horse? Gareth? James J. Braddock. Really? You're in with Ozzy? Yeah, yeah, yeah. How did you get in there? What? Well, he's just like- What did he say? Was he on air with you or something? No, Ozzy, I like that. Like we talked about. When he was in the derby, the English derby. Yeah. And Ozzy says, I'll get you in a horse. I want to get you in a horse, Gareth. And I said, well, I'm just not ready. I'm getting married next year, Ozzy. And he goes, well, I've got one for you. And it's James J. Braddock, ages ago. What price is it? It's about $15, I mean.
Speaker 7Wow. Did he offer it to you, Johnny? Did he offer it to you? Oh, second favorite or third favorite. No, no, no. He didn't offer it to me.
Speaker 2And I'm that excited. It's very humbling to be in a horse. To be invited into. Humbled. Yeah. Well, I will tell you one thing.
Speaker 3There's some ripping people in that horse. Terrific people. There's been a lot of success in that group. Yes, yes. Hopefully I don't. There's only one bloke not in it. That's me. But that's all right. Everyone's had success except for Gareth. Yes. What they've done now is they've, I'm out.
Speaker 7Yes. And he's in.
Speaker 3Oh, wow. That's what's happening. Wow. Mate, imagine if you won the Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 7You'd be nearly one of the first blokes from Parkdale to ever win a Melbourne Cup. What about if you win the Melbourne Cup? I won't be at work on Wednesday. You won't be in?
Speaker 2No. What? Right. Well, you wouldn't turn up if you won the Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 7Hang on, hang on, hang on. Brian Martin called the cocks plate in Fields of Omar beating Monroe. Yeah, he doesn't party like me. And then he ran down. Good from you. Good from you. Speaking of party boys. Good from you.
Speaker 3I met a few young blokes at the races on Saturday who love you, Hawksy. Right. Young bloke called Lucas Livermore. He's about six foot eight. I don't know what he is. He could be a basketballer, a footballer. Geez, he loves you. He just said, can you please pass on a very warm hello to me? Mr. Hawks. So I'm going to give you his number. You need to give him a call. Thank you for listening, Lucas. You need to give him a call and make the effort to say hello to him at the races. Thanks for listening, Lucas.
Speaker 7We need all the support we can get. Sorry, you just got to listen to Johnny and Gareth as well.
Speaker 3But anyway. Bring it on.
Speaker 7Anyway, so you now own the Melbourne Cup, James J. Brady.
Speaker 2Yeah. And hang
Speaker 3on, hang on. Have you got a tie pin? You got one of those little pins? No. Don't worry about that. Get back to the real question.
Speaker 7So Demi cracked it. And then you butted her up. Hang on. I didn't tell her for a while. But it doesn't matter. When you told her she cracked it and then you've gone, oh, but babe, it's second favourite in the Melbourne Cup. How did the attitude change when you told her? Well, we better get a dress. I love it.
Speaker 3That's it. Just put it in the dog's name. Because you had to put your name in the book.
Speaker 7Yes, yes, yes, folks. Put it in the dog's name. Anyway, time for- There's a thousand owners sitting there going, Gareth, this is not your first story. What's his name?
Speaker 2Bobby, Bobby. Put it in Bobby's name. Yeah, well, he's not- What do you mean he's not- I don't know if I registered him with the council. I didn't get into the race book yet. Time for a break. On the other side- Parkdale don't need you to do that. We're going to talk about the Melbourne Cup. Bob Peters will join me a little later on. I can't really interview Bob with you two because it'd be a train wreck. I can't. I can't. I can't. Really?
Speaker 7Right. No. He's hard on us. I've rapped Cosmic Cassandra. You've bagged him. So I'm actually in the good books.
Speaker 3I said it at round one, two on the Cox Plate. You be careful.
Speaker 2They might move Federalists. They might move to Andrea Leak. Oh, you actually. Goodness me. My favourite horse. What about that? Hawksy's favourite horse. Do we have an announcement here?
Speaker 3Hawksy's favourite horse has gone to Andrea Leak.
Speaker 2Now you're pissing me off. Stop it with the language. We'll be kicked off TV soon. Already. Well, yes. Correct. We're on YouTube these days as well. So if you miss the show, you can subscribe to SCN Track on YouTube. Do you watch yourself? He watches himself do other things. He does a lot of other things. I do all the time. That's how you get better.
Speaker 3Do you? Yeah.
Speaker 7Well, how come you haven't got better?
Speaker 3Did you set those cameras? That's why you've moved. Hey, tell me this.
Speaker 7All right. Just quickly. You know the oh no should be. Ross is our producer on a Mondays at the moment because Gerard's in South Africa. How's it going for you, Ross? It must be very, very similar to working with Gerard, I would assume.
Speaker 2Not. Now tell me this. 35,000 at Flemington. It felt weird, didn't it? Was it good?
Speaker 3I got to tell you, I got to tell you, I, uh, I tried to get out for the first, uh, I had a horse run in the first. Yeah. It was hard getting in. There were people everywhere. I thought there were people everywhere. Yeah. There was 35,000. It was, it was a, I mean, I thought, I thought the day was, was terrific. Myself, I was in the, um, up in the chairmans with, uh, with Chris and a couple of guys. It was terrific. Went down. Chris who? What are you? A copper. Well, you said Chris. Yeah. Well, I don't need to call Eddie soon. Maybe he might not be exposed, but, uh, no, I popped in there just quickly. And then I was down in the little owners members area, which is very well organized. The mounting yard was very well organized. And I will say that for people wanting a race experience, having a mounting yard as big as what Flemington is, maybe even making it a bit bigger would be better. If it had been at Moonee Valley, mate, you wouldn't have been able to get in.
Speaker 2No, but it was just a little bit like it. It wasn't the same 35,000 at Flemington compared to a packed house. Who knows where the Cox plate will be next year? Moonee Valley say it definitely will be at Moonee Valley. Do you reckon it will be? Well, I don't know, depending on who you are. So I give up trying to, I looked at Moonee Valley. He's a good bloke. Michael Brow later.
Speaker 3Catch up with him at the race. He's a good bloke, Michael Brow. A lot of feedback. Very smart. How did it go with Troy
Speaker 7Causton saying that it should, uh, that it should merge? Please stop. Yes, you do. How'd it go? I wouldn't have thought very well. What do you mean?
Speaker 3What do I mean? I reckon that business is in bloody hands, mate. We're honest on this show, Gareth. We're honest. We're honest on this show.
Speaker 2Obviously the VRC, Adam Lennon and Michael Brow,
Speaker 3I'm telling you, it's in very good
Speaker 2shape. Moonee Valley want it. Moonee Valley and VRC don't want to merge. I think MRC are open to it and Racing Victoria want it.
Speaker 7So I was at Moorfield. I didn't have a runner at Flemington. And how many wins are you trying at Moorfield? We'll get to that. So, um, what, what was the atmosphere actually like?
Speaker 2I thought it was, it was weird. It was different. But it was always going to be different. I know. I would, I just thought like 35, there wasn't the same. Really? But hang on, hang on, hang on.
Speaker 7What are you comparing it to? You compare, hang on. Moonee Valley. Are you comparing it to Derby Day? Or are you comparing it to Cox Plate Day? I've got to tell you, the John Farnham singer, what's his name?
Speaker 3He's very good. He's doing the Farnham show. What was that song we had?
Speaker 2Like, they had the legendary.
Speaker 3Yeah, but they sang a Farnham song, Will. That's the way it's
Speaker 2going to be, little Gareth.
Speaker 3Oh my God.
Speaker 2Do you know what I would do next year? If I was, um, if I was running Racing Victoria, I'd get everyone in the room and I'd say, all right, then if you're going to have the Cox Plate at Flemington next year for a one-off, I would move it to Champions. For a two-off? Yeah, I would, I would move it to Champions Day. I'd get rid of Champions Day, smile, and make it like a $10 million race. What's that? You, why?
Speaker 3What's wrong with you?
Speaker 2No, I don't know. No, we don't. What is wrong with you?
Speaker 7We don't, no, no, no. Hang on. Otherwise, get it back to the Valley. We don't want a $10 million race. Well. No, no, we don't. And I'll tell you why. Because the Cox Plate, to make it, if you doubled the prize money, the only thing you're going to attract might be an overseas entrant. Is that going to generate $5 million worth of whatever to get the $5 million back? Because at the end of the day, it's all great to be throwing this money around here, there, and everywhere. But is it going to make the race a better race? I'm going to argue and say, absolutely not. We need grassroots coming up. Have a look at the other races on the card.
Speaker 335,000 people. They did the best job they could do. It's never been run there before. It won't be run there again. And thank you, VRC, for doing a wonderful job. And let's go back to the Valley and do the story. And the boys will spark it up. Put the story out of the race.
Speaker 7Bob Peters, an old grown man that's very wealthy, raced a stack of horses in tears. The wizard carrying on, like you've never seen the wizard carry on. Mate, I've had some nights with the wizard. He don't carry on. Yeah. Not with you. He yahooed and screamed and then apologised and said, oh, sorry for doing that. I mean, they've just lost their marbles. I would change it, yeah. So, you know what? It was a great success.
Speaker 2It was a success for.
Speaker 7Well, it has to be a great success. Yeah. Because they don't get 35,000 to Moonee Valley since Lonro and Sunline and Northerly ran. No, I see where you're coming from. So, from that point of view, it is a success. Yeah. It's never going to be the same not being at Moonee Valley. And that was the big thing about Moonee Valley was it's the amphitheatre. Yeah. You're literally on top of all the horses. A coliseum. Correct. Have we got text messages? Yeah, we've got plenty of them.
Speaker 3There's plenty. I'm getting rubbished here, so I want to get them on.
Speaker 2I love it. There's plenty still to get through. We'll take a break and we'll talk about the Melbourne Cup next.
Speaker 1Welcome back to Giddy Up.
Speaker 2Now, the. Gareth. Big debate. Friday. No, Friday. How did we go at the Ascot vote? Yeah, very good. It was my guess, yes, yes. I was going to get to that later on. We'll get to that later on. Hey, the debate is whether you should pay down to last in the Melbourne Cup and you get $100,000 for finishing last. Because I say that. There's going to be a few horses at a big price that are going to be in the Melbourne Cup and they're going to get $100,000. Now, whether they were still run or not in the Melbourne Cup, if you weren't getting $100,000 for last, that is the debate in itself. But at the moment, these are the 24 horses that I've got for the Melbourne Cup. Hopewell Rock. But one of those or two of them could come out, Serrano, Hopewell Rock, because you've got Kings Valley that's backing up for Caulfield Cup, Moonee Valley Cup, and now the Bendigo Cup trying to get into the Melbourne Cup. But if it wins the Bendigo Cup, are you saying it's in? Yeah, probably. Is that an in and win? Yes. It's $40.50. But it's not in a win, but it might get a penalty to move it up that list. Solcombe, if he finishes in the top three, he's in the Cup. And if either. So you are in the Euphrates win, they'll get into the Cup. So at the moment, Hopewell Rock is a strong possibility of not making it. So? And then you've got. Well, I'm just saying he was one of the favourites. And also we've got CTs to be done on all these horses. Yeah, so the CT scans. Let's sit back and wait for those. CT scans for the second shipment. So that's defiantly Sons and Lovers, Stinger Glass, Trust Your Instinct, Goody Two Shoes, and James J. Braddock they will be conducted tomorrow. There's a few Australian horses that need to get their CT scans done. I'm under the impression James J.
Speaker 3Braddock had his CT scan done in the UK. No, they've got to do it again. Okay, but Aussie wouldn't have bought a horse without having the CT. No. So I know they've got to do it again, but you can be assured that.
Speaker 2And then the Bendigo Cup horses have got to do theirs on Thursday and that's the cut-off. Maybe you can't be assured. I don't know about.
Speaker 7No, I know what you're trying to say. By looking at it, by rights, he should be right. But a horse can trot and canter. On the grass and chip something or do some damage. But what you're saying is he's ticked the first criteria.
Speaker 2So do you think he should be paid to $100,000 for finishing last in the Melbourne Cup? I think if you're qualified,
Speaker 3I think if you've won the races and you're entitled to get into the race, you're entitled to run.
Speaker 2Yeah, that's fair enough.
Speaker 3That's what I think. Like, it's easy for us to all sit back and say, we've got an emerging stayer who hasn't done the work the other horses have done, and he's going to start $16 and there's a $150 thing, which you've got to take into consideration. It's consideration of the owners and the people that have paid up for those other horses all the way through.
Speaker 2Yeah. And if I own one of these horses like a strictly business, of course I'd be running in the Melbourne Cup. That's what we live for.
Speaker 7If you look at the criteria for the Melbourne Cup and you've passed it and you're ticked and you're in, who cares if you're 500 to one? Yeah. Because you've done the, use Johnny's quote, you've done the work and you've gotten in the race. It's a dream. He's always going to, we didn't hear it this year. Oh, I didn't run in the Caulfield Cup. We've got to get in the. Every year or two, there's always a, there's a hard luck story. But the truth is, this is not like a two-year-old race where you go shinsa and you're buggered. This is a four, five, six, seven-year-old race and you've had years to qualify. So the thing that I would rather see though is Bendigo Cup, run and win and you're in because what really, really irks me is when the handicappers have too much discretion. Now I'm not saying David Hagen because. You are. Well, no, no, no. Hear me out. To be fair, I don't think he's done it yet. But previous, Greg Carpenter, Carps from Hong Kong, mate, if they needed three kilos to get in, they'd get a three kilo penalty or, you know, you know what I'm saying? So I think that's a bit unfair because if you've qualified and done all the right things to get in, your form mightn't be going as good. It's a bit like, you know, the Melbourne Cup winner of last year is a guaranteed to get back in for this year, regardless of how you're going. So to answer the question, why, correct me if I'm wrong, but why they pay down to a hundred grand is.
Speaker 2Is a travel subsidy, basically.
Speaker 7Correct. It was instead of saying anyone that comes from other parts of the world will give you a kickback, we'll just actually say there's no kickbacks, but if you run in the race to run last year to a hundred grand. So at the end of the day, I don't know what the math is, but you could ask Lee Jordan. From first nominations to final acceptance, I'm guessing it'll be 70 grand it's costing you to put in the race just to run in, have the privilege of running second last. I think it's 80 around there.
Speaker 2Okay, okay. It's 80.
Speaker 7So in theory, there's actually only 20 grand left. Now, it costs you right now to go business class to London and back $12,000, $14,000. That's you. So I don't know what it's costing these horses to fly out and to fly back. $12,000 or $14,000 to London.
Speaker 3Where are you going? Via Helsinki and Fiji? Yeah. It costs you more than that.
Speaker 7It costs $100,000 plus to get a horse. So at the end of the day, if you want to come, you know you've got to have a big criteria to pass. It's going to cost you at least $100,000 for the privilege. Now, look at that horse, the Legend horse that ran the Cox Plate on Saturday. I mean, they paid $200,000 to run him for the privilege of running in a Cox Plate and just burn the turf, speeding them all up and then falling in a hole and running nowhere. Well, if that's what the owner wants to do, you know, I mean, fair play to him. He's a last start group one winner and the options are there. So someone's always going to boohoo someone for doing that or saying, I'm just going to run in the Melbourne Cup to get members tickets is the actual unofficial. Quote, just to get tickets to the Melbourne Cup day. Good luck to them.
Speaker 2The great debate. We'll have that here straight after this break here on Giddy Up. This is the means test on this Monday morning. Johnny O'Neill, Wayne Hawks and Gareth Hall with you. It's 10 to 11.
Speaker 1Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.
Speaker 2Yes. We'll get to the debate in just a moment. But the yes, yes, yes for me is the Ascot Vale Hotel, the SEN Giddy Up lunch. And we had such a great turnout. So the pub was packed. We didn't fit any more in. Everyone had a good time. That's what they tell me anyway. Our guest speakers were excellent. Who was the guest speakers? James McDonald, Trent Busseton, Jack Jenkins, Kevin Blake. Who else did I miss? Miles and Tags were there as well. So it was a great day. Cool. Good pub. Good pub. Great pub. So that's my yes, yes, yes. It's taken me about three days to recover. But anyway, it's been fun.
Speaker 3Mine is Will Bourne finding Jua Kibo for not much money. Okay. He found it overseas, bought it off a trainer. You and that? Sent it out here. No, I'm not. But the Johnsons, Timmy Porter, Jerry Vann, and Max Zhang. Maxie, who owns Marjon. Oh, yes. He's got a little share in it. It's a great racing. He's a legend, Max. He's a. And also Sammy Clipperton. Yeah. Again, let's highlight the fact, talking about horses that are qualified. It won the Metropolitan. Couldn't get a run in the Caulfield Cup. Comes and blows him away. It was a huge win.
Speaker 7Probably did him a favour. Yeah, yeah. It
Speaker 3was a huge win and now goes as an absolute live chance in the Melbourne Cup. And I will say, Jerry Vann and Timmy Porter and the Johnsons are in a stack of horses. I'm pretty sure those colours are the Middle Earth colours. Tim's colours. So I'm. Seeing that horse with them. So well done to those guys. And as Hawksy said earlier, there's a stack of yes, yes, yeses. There were some great rides. I thought Geordie Childs' ride on Surf and Bird was unbelievable. And, you know, just Kieran, I think, to train one, two, three in the Moonee Valley Cup. It's not easy to do, mate. And he just seems to have a stack of really nice staying horses at the moment heading to the Cup.
Speaker 7I'll tell you one race that would have looked better at Moonee Valley on Saturday was the Amy Vars, the three-year-old 2,000 metre race. They were running quicker than what they looked. But being the huge. Huge length of the Strait of Flemington, they all looked like they were just going up and down to one spot. Whereas around the tight corner at Moonee Valley, it's probably a little bit more of a better spectacle from that point of view with those quality of horses. We've got a new segment. I've got one yes, yes, yes before you tip me out. Morfaville on Saturday. The boys couldn't do enough for us. I know we had a good day there at Morfaville on Saturday, but they were very, very good. And you know what? You're running 50, $60,000 races. It was as much money as winning midweeks at Canterbury. And they run those benchmark 62s and whatnots. And you know what? You're a Saturday winner. And the owners were very, very happy.
Speaker 2Well done, Hawksy. Now I'll get to your new segment after 11 o'clock, but let's get through a few text messages. Love the show on Bant every Monday. Hawksy comparing horses from years ago to today. Just a comparison. I know it's all tempo related, but Cosmic Crusader ran 10 lengths faster and 13 lengths faster in this year's Cox Plate than the two Northerly victories. Just the thought that's from Marcus.
Speaker 7Northerly would pick him up and spit. I reckon even Uncle Bob would agree with that, as emotional as he was.
Speaker 2G'day, Gary. Can you please ask Wayne if he thinks Eliana is screaming out for a Melbourne Cup trip? The only difference on Saturday was she didn't have the same turn of foot as Cosmic Crusader over the shorter course. That's from Marcus.
Speaker 7She sort of did because she only got beaten by a long nose or a neck. So yeah, I always said that she was more Caulfield Cup, but I'm not training her. And you know what? They nearly got away with winning the Cox Plate.
Speaker 2How can you go to a Melbourne Cup when Birdman kicked back to beat her into second? Different race. So 2,000
Speaker 7metre wait for age at Flemington to a two mile handicap is that far apart. It's not funny. The thing is, most horses get to the home corner at Flemington looking for the oxygen mask.
Speaker 2Good on you, Johnny. Keep having an opinion. That's why I tune in and want to hear too many people are scared to have an opinion and have a bum full of splinters. G'day, G-Man. Hypothetical question. Would Cosmic Crusader have won Saturday if the Cox Plate was at Moonee Valley? I say no. You say no too, Wayne. No. I tended to function at Bell's Hotel on Friday. Let you. And let's tell you that Craig Williams gave James J. Braddock the biggest pump up of all time. Good on you, Chas. Jeez, I love Aussie for getting him into this horse. What a great man.
Speaker 3That is a very kind gesture. Yes. A week before a Melbourne Cup, he's just. No, it was longer than a week. Wrecking his marriage if it runs last, but that's okay.
Speaker 2Morning, G. Wayne Hawksley. Can you please ask Hawksley about his horse in race three at Newcastle today? He should have something on that's from Bailey. Chance. Chance. That's all you're going to get, Bailey. Um, my yes, yes, it's left field. Sam Clippett, a forgotten Everest winning jockey, retired to come back to racing. Can barely get a ride in the city. He's ridden Juju Cabot third, second, and now consecutive victories this preparation and is now ready to go for the Melbourne Cup. That's Alex from Manly. Best place on earth, nearly. Alex Manly. I love it. 10.58. We're going to take a break. We'll come back. And we've got 15 minutes left of the means test.
Speaker 1Join the conversation, text us on 0499 736 736 live across Australia.
Speaker 2Now time for.
Speaker 8On the Monday means test, all thanks to the Dash Cover Company. Dash mates for your car. Dashcovercompany.com.au. Anyone and anything is in the crosshairs. It's the drive-by. Dashcovercompany.com.au with Wayne Hawks.
Speaker 2Now shut up and drive. For a clearer, safer drive, stop, dash, glare with a molded dash mat. Take it away, Wayne.
Speaker 3Hawks, are you going to do something with these dash mats with some sort of jockey silks colours on them or something? You know, I mean, how good would that be? There's a good idea. You could get bloody, you could get James J Braddock colours on your dash mat. Yes, I will actually. I wonder if you could put a dash mat across the back so Bobby could lay on the dash mat.
Speaker 7Maybe we could get a dash mat and put it across your mouth. I'm all over them. I think I want to get one.
Speaker 3How do I get one? All right, there you go.
Speaker 7My drive-by this week, my whack is a wall oven in the Cox Plate. Okay. Why is it a whack? Well, because you've won a Golden Rose, you've won a Caulfield Guineas, and then to turn him around two weeks later to run the Cox Plate, you've got to protect these Colts. All you're doing is, all you do is run value off them. And you know what? He's owned by Keora. They own part of Vinery. Maybe he's already going to go to Vinery stud and they don't need to worry about a price tag. But with these expensive Colts, you need to run them way less than more. And he might've got held up, held up, held up, but he didn't run the 2000. And not to say that he won't run the 2000. I've got horses like Weiss so hard that I think it's going to be pretty good in the autumn. I think just go ahead, boys, and keep smashing yourselves. Because every time I see these horses cracking at each other, I'm thinking, beautiful. You've got to run the Cox Plate if you're wall oven, don't you? No, you don't. You don't have to at all. Absolutely not. You know what? People have the choice of going and doing it. So at the end of the day, good luck. They'll say he pulled up fine, but you know what? You're belting a young three-year-old Colt and then you want to come back in the autumn and chase around with guineas, rose hill guineas.
Speaker 2What about the debate here? 2,500 metres of the VRC Derby. Everyone talks about it at this time of the year. The field's okay. I thought it's worth $3 million. It is helped by the two Sydney horses that are coming out in Stoke. Call me Marco and call me Airway. But we think Cox is the chairman of the VRC. Surely he won't be bringing it back to 2,000 metres. Or will he, Wayne?
Speaker 7I think he was in favour of 25, but you'd have to ask him. But I'm not a purist from the point of view of looking at history. I'm looking at today and where we are. We don't breed enough staying horses because we can't bring the Europeans out because the Europeans come out and bolster up all of our big staying races. We can't bring them out for the Derbys because they're six months behind. So our spring three-year-olds, they'd really only be two and a half, two years of age coming from Europe. So that's why we won't see any of them here. I think if you run the Derby over 2,000 metres that you will get the War Wovens arguably running in the 2,000 metre Derby than what you will the Cox Plate. Now people like you, Gareth, will say we should have those horses in the Cox Plate. But I say the Cox Plate's the Cox Plate and we don't need the three-year-olds to be bolstering up those horses. Now, this talk of running. Well, you've started Napoleonic in the.
Speaker 2Cox Plate last year? Who? Is it Napoleon? Nepotism. Nepotism. Nepotism. Yep. Yep. Yeah? So, aren't you contradicting yourself?
Speaker 7No. Why am I contradicting myself?
Speaker 2Because you say don't run three-year-olds, and you've run three-year-olds before. Well, I would have run him in the Derby,
Speaker 7though, if the Derby was 2000. Okay. Okay? Think about what I'm saying, darling. So, the bottom line is, I think the Derby is worth more than enough money for being worth $3 million now, because we know that it was under the criteria of you didn't need to pull your finger out, but there's a lot of other races around that I was surprised it didn't get the tap on the shoulder. But it's not the club's fault, because the club can only put in what it wants to put in. Yeah. But $3 million, 2,500-meter race. So, I have the answer for next year. Right? Because everyone talks about the Derby. Should it be 25 or 2,000? We're missing the bleeding obvious. Run the Oaks next year over 2,000. Bring the lead-up races back to a mile, 1,700 for the Wakefield on the Saturday. So, then that way, you could run the Wakefield 16 or 17, and then they run into the Oaks. Run the Oaks over 2,000 meters and see whether it's a success or not. And if it's a success, then you change the Derby. But I don't think, from a punter's point of view, anyone will give a flying toss whether the Derby is 25 or whether it's 2,000. And for the purest listening, you can't eat history. Now. It's there, and it's in the history books. But you know what? That was then. This is now. So, we need to change with the times, and we are not breeding staying horses.
Speaker 3Yeah. For me, I want to leave it where it is, Hawksy. I think if you've got young progressive colts, and you are concerned about the 2,500, even fillies, you're running the spring champion in Sydney. That's what it's there for. That's what you do. And you run there. Great. And then you tip. And then you tip them out. They get a bit more time to have a break. They don't have to come down. You are right, Hawksy, in that generally the horses that run in the spring champion, and I can't name any of them now, but two or three of them have started favourite. One started favourite in the year that Warning won the Derby here.
Speaker 7Yeah. But the difference is, though, the spring champion, sorry to butt in, only changed a couple of years ago, and they pushed it back further. Yeah. Because it was a gloaming the spring champion. Now, the spring champion is a week before the Derby, because Uncle Peter wanted to put it to. give the irks to Melbourne, didn't want to run it on Derby Day, just wanted to run it the week before. Exactly like the Invitation. The Invitation was last Saturday, because he didn't want to run it head to head with the Empire Rose.
Speaker 3Yeah. Okay. Well, anyway, I mean, I just believe me as they are, mate. They've been there forever. But that doesn't mean things can't change. As you say.
Speaker 7Would it be a better race, though, with Caulfield Guineas for them?
Speaker 3I mean, look, the interesting thing with that is not always the horses that are the milers in the Caulfield Guinea. But traditionally, horses freshen up and run the Coolmore. Because those young horses, you're generally sprinting horses, trying to get them to a mile for the first time.
Speaker 7If you get a better quality race on paper, it doesn't always work out in history, but if you get a better quality race, 2,000 metres, we don't run enough staying races. We don't have enough staying races. You know what the crazy part is? This time of the year, I said it the other day, you had the $2 million race in Sydney and you had the Might and Power, the. What's it called? The Hill Stakes and the Might and Power. It was $3 million in two minutes, and they were both 2,000 metre races. All of our money's in the staying races, and
Speaker 3we're not breeding them. Are you only talking about running them at 2,000 because it's very early in the three-year-old development? I don't have an issue with the AJC
Speaker 7Derby, the AJC Oaks, Adelaide and Queensland. Maybe Adelaide and Queensland might want to bring theirs back to 2,000 and see whether it improves their race or not.
Speaker 2We'll get through these text messages, and then we've got our seedings for some of the big races coming up during that Flemington-Carterfland. We've got the Golden Eagle on Saturday. Morning, boys. I back Bermen, but got to say Cosmic Crusader won on its absolute merits. I don't disagree with Wayne very often, but he has got it wrong here. The irony isn't lost on us that last year, Johnny said, Charles Wolfe was the only good enough to be in a Kingston townhorse, and now Buckaroo is heading there. Bloody hell, I love you, Johnny. Got to go there.
Speaker 3Got to go there. It's good money, set weights and penalties, I think.
Speaker 2Do you want to be chasing her around? Yeah, but I don't think she's going to get it.
Speaker 3I mean, our target would be the railway, so we'd go for the mile. Did you get too much weight? What weight would you get? No, no, no, because I think it's set weights and penalties now. No, it's handicap. No, but I think they've given it maximum 59 or something, I think.
Speaker 2Hey, Johnny-O, is Barrick's going to the Coolmore this weekend?
Speaker 3No, he's going to go to the 1400 on Cup Day, and the reason we're doing that is, no, we'll then, if he goes good in the seven, which we think he will, he's a Magic Millions horse, so we'll send him up for the three-year-old.
Speaker 7I'm reeling it. We're talking about Magic Millions already.
Speaker 2Question for John, were you happy with the ride on St. George? I was critical. I laughed the race and thought he rode it, not to win the Cox Plate, but to win the Melbourne Cup. That's from Warren. Well, I hope it wins the Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 3But having said that, I did say to Kieran, I thought he should have gone. He let Cosmic Crusader sprint past him, but Blake was really happy with the run. The horse finished off really well, so, you know. Is he riding the Cup?
Speaker 2I think he rides in the Cup, yeah. I think Benny Mellon's been booked for Saran as well, because Ethan Brown's riding Point of Law. That's correct. Correct. Horses having the miles in their legs, paying dividends more than ever now. Fules last year, now Cosmic Crusader. Best hour and a bit of radio and TV all week with these blokes. Love it. Gareth, forget about John O'Neill's plunge at Yarra Valley. How about your offside of the Bert Newton lookalike? Didn't even open his mouth about his two horses at Morpheville. That's from Aunty Elsie. Hello, Aunty Elsie.
Speaker 3Righto. Is he talking about my two horses at Morpheville that we're talking about? Yes. Well, we had Michael Hickman actually rang me before race three. We had a horse called White Pointer go around that I think started favourite. Yeah. And he said, I want to scratch because the track's really chopped up now. So we were going to scratch. We got some advice otherwise and ran it. Didn't handle the track. Pulled a hamstring. And young Jacob's riding the last on Darcy Lane wasn't very good. Okay. We're running it, yes.
Speaker 7The problem with me giving a tip for next Saturday is from a trainer's point of view, I don't know the barrier. I don't know where we're at. Blah, blah, blah. No, no, but I don't. I had two winners. The third one got slaughtered because it drew a bad barrier. It was always going to be bad before we even started, but we rolled the dice to go to Adelaide.
Speaker 2Do you want me to read out? I don't want to read out all of them, even though they're having a crack at you and your stable. I don't care. Why is Wayne so against new training methods without being disrespectful, but his mighty stable isn't what it once was? Because I don't have the group one horses.
Speaker 7And the bottom line is if I don't have them, I don't have them. It's simple as that. You know, you train what you got there, mate.
Speaker 2Thoughts on chocolates run on Saturday.
Speaker 7Ran enormous. Can it win the cup? Yes. Why can't it? Yes. You know what the best form is? Current form is the best form leading into that race. And we always look around this stuff. But normally. Normally the horses that are in good form run good.
Speaker 3Only seven horses can win the cup. We know that.
Speaker 2Who? Point of law. No, we'll get to that in a moment when I give you the seedings. Morning, gents. What chance do you give Pinhole getting into a start in the Melbourne Cup? Wayne Hawks has more chance of competing in the Melbourne Cup than Pinhole.
Speaker 3I will tell you one thing. It had no luck. He never got any room on that mare at all. It had no luck whatsoever.
Speaker 2I'm just saying that I'm more of a chance to run the Melbourne Cup than Pinhole.
Speaker 3It'll win the, if it doesn't get in the cup. You said I was more chance. If it doesn't get in the cup, it'll win the Queen Elizabeth. Yeah. It goes there.
Speaker 2So the Derby goes to 2000. No three-year-old go to the Cox. The four-year-olds go to Sydney for the Golden Eagle. The plate becomes a five-year-old in an above race. Wayne at his best. That's from Tom.
Speaker 7Hang on a minute. I'll tell you what the deal is. On Saturday, I ran second in a million dollar race and got 190 grand for running second. Second. Yes. The money, you got to follow the money. Unfortunately, it's not what we want down here in Melbourne for the spring carnival. But the bottom line is that horse, Why So Hard, would have come to Melbourne for a carbine club and the carbine club's worth about $3,000. So you have, it is what it is. I've said it a million times. It's Coles versus Woolworths and it's never going to go back to how it used to be. That was then. This is now.
Speaker 2John had a big opinion of Saran before the Caulfield Cup. What about the Melbourne Cup? That's from Slicer.
Speaker 3Yep. The horse is going very well. A bit of a forgotten horse. Yeah. He's very, very well weighted. Worked terrific and is going great.
Speaker 2And Mellon rides. Please can you ask the boys why we only had nine races at Flemington on Saturday and again this week for Derby Day. Two of the biggest days of the year. When we have the most eyeballs and the biggest opportunity to attract new fans. We decide to only run nine races. Bewildering. Well, I disagree with that. Less is more sometimes.
Speaker 7No. We will. One of the reasons is because you have got Cox Plate Day, which we never had at Flemington last year. So you, so the track. You didn't have the two-year-olds this year. No, no, no. But, but we can, you have 10 races on Cox Plate Day. So they've obviously must have wiped one off. The bottom line is this. We are having a whole extra race meeting. Liam O'Keefe has to prepare that track. Yeah. We have a whole extra race meeting, which he didn't have to, uh, to contend with. And just, just quickly, I texted him this morning before I came on and said, how much rain? And I've had, uh, 47 mils of rain at Flemington. It was perfect. We only had about five mil lead, you know, on the day and that night. If rain could have come at any time, it was glad to come yesterday. Then we don't want much for the rest of the week.
Speaker 2I've got Bob Peters coming up in just a moment. So let's go through our seeds. The Golden Eagle. She's alibi $1.66. She'll have a gulp tomorrow morning at Pakenham. Bay. Whack, $6.50. Skyhook, $8. Bad luck will only beat her, Johnny. You agree? Uh, I think Kieran will win the race for the amazing journey.
Speaker 3Well, you can't really. What price is it? $15. There you go, folks. Just make sure you have something each way on. It's a very good horse. Very good horse. Kieran's on fire. I think she's an alibi as a ripper. I'm just, and it broke a track record the other day. So it's obviously peaked. I know it was beaten and it's going to come back from breaking a track record over that distance to 1500. I'm not saying it won't win. It's a very, very good horse, but I'd rather be having something at $3.30 the place or something each way amazing journey.
Speaker 7She won't want to draw barrier 20 because there's 20 runners in this race. Yes. There's 20 runners.
Speaker 2Victoria Darby on with Stormy Marco. True Rebel's the favourite. Wayne? No idea.
Speaker 3No. Johnny? I think Hierarchy ran really well. I think True Rebel will run well. And I think Skewer was a good run too. So there's a big, there's a horse, a big price in that race that had no luck at Caulfield on that leader's track, a horse called Russian Rock. So if it goes there, have something each way. Young Trotter trains it.
Speaker 2Cool. More next episode for me.
Speaker 3Johnny? Only two hopes. Two in the market next episode. And Santano Glow's Airborne goes down the straight, but I think the next episode will
Speaker 2win, yeah. Lady Shed and Dole win the Empire Rose now? Would have thought. Yep. Yeah. Pete Moody, I reckon he'll be happy with 20. 20? Barrier 20 you'd be happy with? She'll just be able to sit out the back and go whoosh.
Speaker 3Oh, look, there's no doubt it's a start. I'm telling you, the horse of Kieran's is a very good horse, mate.
Speaker 7But the problem is, Gareth, with a filter 20, you'll have so many slow horses in her
Speaker 2race. So, the Empire Rose, I'm with Lady Shed and Dole. The VRC Oaks, they won't beat that filly from Sydney, will they? David Payne's free. Pox and Medea, 210.
Speaker 3I reckon Wallace is a sit and steer. Who? Your colour. It'll win. It'll win. I'll take you on there. It'll win. Well, of course you do, because you're $1.90 and I'm $5. Yeah, yeah. But I'm $1.90 the place. Keep going, you two. This is going to be great. I'd rather be back in mine the place than back in yours the win.
Speaker 2Champion Sprint, Jolly Star. And Tempted, probably. I'll Jolly Star the place over Tempted. Tempted will win by half a furlong. Champions, Moll, Autumn Glow. Looks like Jenny might take her on if she's all right. That'll make it a little interesting. Wouldn't matter. Champion Stakes, Cosmic Crusader. If it goes there, it'll win, yeah. Yeah. And then the Melbourne Cup, obviously with the third decks finalised at 10 o'clock today, we'll have them shortly. So, there's no market there. But who are your horses?
Speaker 3I think there's seven horses that can win.
Speaker 2Yes, yes. Who are they, Johnny?
Speaker 3They are, trust your instinct, J.
Speaker 2McDonald. J.P. McManus is going to, I think, have a million on it.
Speaker 3Very nice horse. Yeah. Very, very nice horse.
Speaker 2J.P. McManus. Having a million on it?
Speaker 3Yeah. Okay. So, trust your instinct. Very nice horse. Defiantly, I'm sticking with it. Very nice horse. Needs to lead. Zaran, Shocklets, St. George. St. George won't be winning. Why can't St. George win? He won't get two miles. It's by roaring line out of a Galileo mare. He'll get five miles. Yeah. Point of Law. Yes. And Middle Earth. Yes. No James J. Braddock there, Johnny. Kieran's got one, two, three, four, five horses that can win the race. I'm also not discounting Dua Kibo or if Kings Valley gets in. So, he might have seven or eight runners. Okay. The only danger he's got of not winning is J.P. McManus' horse or Defiantly. Good luck. No James J. James J. Braddock.
Speaker 2No, wet tracker. He's going to be running all week.
Speaker 3Well, you'd want it to be, if it's heavy, if it's a
Speaker 2heavy track, he's got a great chance. Hey, something for the battlers quickly.
Speaker 7A winner. That is Wayne. Brucelli Wednesday in Sydney. She's just left and gone back to Sydney and Uncle Bob's horse. I don't think he's going to get a run in. Fedulous. I don't think he's going to get a run in the big race, but if he does. If he does, he's going to be a huge. What's the big race? The Golden Eagle. Oh, yes. He's going to be hugely hard to beat. And if he didn't see his run the other day, don't look at me like that.
Speaker 2Don't me. If she's alibi, if Fedulous beats, she's alibi. You know what? Wayne's loving this horse more than ever. You'll hear all about it next Monday, folks.
Speaker 3Right. And today you're going to have something on Seductra. Yes. A horse we've got running at Newcastle. Yeah. And then when it gets the coin, you're going to have something. Go to Swan Hill tomorrow. Swan Hill, you bet. Swan Hill. Got a first starter with the Hayes boys. A horse called. A horse called Tremont. Okay. Always fun.
Speaker 2And Tremont, the more you bet, the more you win. Gamble responsibly. 1-800-858-858. Thanks, boys. Always a lot of fun. You two never spoke about J-Mac today.
Speaker 7Wow. That's a first.
Speaker 2Bye. Yeah. See ya. Bob Peters to join me next.
