Monday Breakdown w/David Gately (26/10)

This episode of Giddy Up with Gareth Hall features David Gately's Melbourne breakdown, focusing on Cox Plate Day at Flemington. The panel agrees the meeting felt unusual at the bigger venue, with a crowd of about 35,000 lacking the intimate atmosphere of Moonee Valley. The Cox Plate itself delivered a memorable result as Cosmic Crusader, trained by Andrea Leak for Bob Peters, won seventh-up. Gately praises the ride of William Pike, who allowed the horse to settle and produce one sustained run, turning the tables on Birdman. Aliana ran well for third but was found wanting against two better horses, while Sir Delius was a disappointing favourite and St George emerged as a strong Melbourne Cup trial. The discussion also covers the Moonee Valley Gold Cup, where Juja Kibo secured a Melbourne Cup berth, and the Kewney Stud Mile, where Surf and Bird defeated Buckaroo and Another Will ahead of a likely Empire Rose start. Other features include Smooth Chino's sprint win over Mazu, True Rebel's Vase victory, and the Sydney three-year-olds' Derby credentials. The show closes with a look ahead to a busy Cup Week.

Speaker 2back to giddy up gareth hall with you david gately joins me now for the breakdown all thanks to Woodside Park, the home of Celestial Legend, brilliant in the Doncaster Mile at Group 1, tough in the Roundwick Guineas at Group 1, and Lower River, a devastating winner of the Group 1 Dubai World Cup, the son of the Sire sensation, into mischief. Hello to you, Gator.
Speaker 3And a very good morning to you, mate. Cox Plate at Flemington, a point of difference, but a great race nonetheless.
Speaker 2Yeah, what did you make of Cox Plate Day? I just had Kylie Rogers on it. I mentioned from the start it was weird, wasn't it? It was weird to me. Like, 35,000 at Flemington felt like 5,000 at Moonee Valley. It just didn't have that atmosphere. Like, you need 80,000, if you know what I mean, because it's such a big joint, Flemington.
Speaker 3No, it is that. And, I mean, yeah, I was out there, and I thought it had a good feel, but, yeah, the crowd were involved and right into it, so that side of it was okay. But, yeah, obviously, the Moonee Valley has its unique traits and structures that are synonymous with this race.
Speaker 2The Cox Plate, it was some build-up. It's always my favourite race, and I reckon on paper, and we talked about this on Thursday, it was going to be the best race of the spring, and I think it lived up to those expectations. This is what happened there on Saturday in our greatest Wait for Age contest.
Speaker 4Legend only led by two lengths. Light infantry man asked for the effort. Sir Delius queuing up. Both blind rays. War woven needs a run. They were followed by Aliana down the outside, winding up with Chow Wolf. Sir Delius, blind rays together. War woven back to the inside. Birdman's getting through. Aliana down the outside at the clock tower. Birdman with Aliana. Cosmic Crusader right down the outside. It's Birdman. Cosmic Crusader trying to pick it up. Cosmic Crusader goes to the front. Cosmic Crusader. It was written in the stars. Wins the Cox Plate.
Speaker 2Yeah, Cosmic Crusader. Who says you can't? Win the Cox Plate seventh up. And it was an amazing training performance by Andrea Leak and Bob Peters. And Bob Peters is a. I've said this on a few occasions. He is a unique man. He does it differently to everybody else, Bob Peters. He's built up that empire from a business perspective, but he's racing empire from the bottom up. He's been doing it for more than five decades and he's had so much success along the journey. And he's used some great. Great trainers as well. But he's also moved on from those trainers because if you don't do it Bob's way, then he says, okay, then we'll go our different ways. And he's been able to do that throughout his career. And all he's wanted to win is a WS Cox Plate. And he gives opportunities to different trainers and he gave an opportunity to Andrea Leak. And they've combined to deliver one hell of a result with a terrific course. He's just an iron horse gator. He just continues to turn up every start. He was amazing then. He was amazing again on Saturday.
Speaker 3Yeah, look, he was. I mean, I've described him as a poor man's northerly. He's got those similar traits, you know? And it's about knowing your athlete, right? So there's no doubt that I would imagine roughly seven or eight out of 10 equine athletes couldn't handle this prep. But he can, obviously. And he does. You know, Northerly, Coole, Jamaica, not so much, you know, a Winx and those sort of horses. So that's rule one, eh? I'd imagine if you're coaching any athlete, you have to know what their strengths and weaknesses are. Clearly, he's a better horse ridden a bit colder. And Pike's been saying that despite the noise that, you know, people think they're motorbikes, just put them whenever you want. It's not how it works, mate. And that is the way to ride him. He turned the tables on Birdman ridden that way, and he was fabulous. Real run-ons race, wasn't it? Four of the first five home, all from well off midfield. So we knew it was going to be a strong speed. It didn't, you know, pre-race, it didn't mean Light Infantry Man and Land Lengen couldn't win because they'd both performed really well prior running along at that fast speed. But this particular race late in the day, that was the way it unfolded. The last three races, in fact, were all, the trifecta were all middle of the track, weren't they?
Speaker 2And as you always say, you've got to know your athlete. And that's what Pike, he understands Cosmic Crusader now. He probably, and we mentioned this last week, and he probably rode Cosmic Crusader. Well, he did ride him too well there from a wide gate when he landed the 1-1. He's just best when you leave him alone at the start and you let him find a rhythm and he can finish off like that. If he drew a gate, he probably goes close to winning a Caulfield Cup. And then we're talking, about him in the same conversation as the champion in Northley. But he was able to go and win a Cox Plate from last and he just didn't quite finish off last week. So he does go down now, Gator. There's no doubt about that. He's one of the greatest horses to come out of WA, Cosmic Crusader.
Speaker 3Yeah, no doubt. I saw a little thing on Twitter. He'd sort of gone past old comrade. I think that's fair. He's got some ground to make up on the mighty Northley in my humble. But, but he's an exceptional horse in his own right. You know, it's not his fault. He doesn't know who Northley is. No. And they're different generations. So he's a ripper. I take your point clearly with the Caulfield Cup. I think they had to do what they did, given the pattern of the day from the gate. It was the perfect ride to give him every chance to win. But he's clearly, you know, just, just a superior athlete. He's not inept being put into a race, but he's superior when he's, when he's been saved for one sustained run.
Speaker 2And Andrew, like, talked to Jason Richardson after the race and she said, yeah, it was an afterthought, the Caulfield Cup, but the main aim still was the Cox plate. So that was his main goal. And they just went to the Caulfield Cup because they believed he had the ability to cope with all of that. But it was brave placement really. If, and obviously Bob Peters, as I mentioned before, he just does it differently. He just does it his way. And I don't think, put it this way. If this horse was with one of the big stables, I don't think they would, probably go down that path even if Bob wanted to with the horse like that. But obviously Bob has that relationship with his trainers that they, they work together closely. And if he says we go down that path, they go down that path.
Speaker 3Yeah. And then that's all relevant and, and all part of the puzzle, isn't it? I think, you know, if you're talking stables like, you know, other, other stables, I don't necessarily agree with you. I think that they would understand, that this athlete is capable of that. You know, we saw the all-conquering Ma team do a similar, have a similar prep with Goldtrip, I suppose. So, yeah. So, you know, but, but the point is you have to know what your great attributes are. And that's, and all your, your only job is to get the best out of that athlete. That's, that's really your only job. And that goes for any coach in any sport.
Speaker 2Let's hear from the beaten jockeys after this year's WS Cox Plate, because there was some big efforts behind Cosmic Crusader. And it's always interesting to listen to these beaten jockeys like Birdman and Aliana were both very good. Charles Wolfe coming off that King Charles effort where he was placed behind, of course, Autumn Glow there in the King Charles last week. St. George was an excellent Melbourne Cup trial. And Sir Delius, he was probably the disappointment of the race, but here's what the beaten jocks had to say. Jamie Mott, attrition. Yeah, they've got a good position, but perhaps off that speed, it might've been a little bit too close for him. And he struggled to finish off.
Speaker 5Ethan Brown, land legend. He stepped slow and he just had far too much pressure early to get across and used up all his petrol there. Blake Shin, St. George. Pretty good Melbourne Cup trial. Great fifth, got beat by the four best horses in the country. Ran super, yeah, bring on the cup. James McDonald, Aliana. She was huge, very proud of her efforts. She did a good job. John Allen, Middle Earth.
Speaker 6Yeah, I was fairly happy with him. Just had a little stumble over the gate, but we were just out the back from there. A few of them were a little bit sharp for him, but I thought once he got into the home straight and balanced up, he held his gallop the whole way to the line. It was a good and strong late, so I'm still leaving him spot on for where he's going Tuesday week.
Speaker 7Rachel King, Warwoven. Super run. He's up against the big boys today, but I felt he equipped himself well. He just might not have quite been ready for the 2000 this prep, but I think he will in time. Chad Schofield, Shale Wolf. Very proud of him. I thought he ran a terrific race. Travelled. The winner was in the winning spot. He's been beaten, not far at all. Very proud. Jamie Mellon, blind race.
Speaker 8Disappointing, guys. He was travelling up enormous outside of Sedelius, and I gave him a squeeze, and he found, and then he just pulled up like something went amiss, so hopefully the vet finds something, because that was out of character for him.
Speaker 9Harry Coffey, light infantry man. Yeah, he was disappointing, but he never got a chance to be happy and dictate. He was always sort of at his top from the start to the end, and he just wasn't comfortable. Because of that, he was disappointing. Ben Mellum, Birdman?
Speaker 10really proud of the horse. He got it all right today. Had a beautiful run. Really happy with the run. He burst through to win and just ran to a better one today. Craig Williams, Sir Delius.
Speaker 11Yeah, look, he's done everything much better. His attitude was better. He ran better, but we're still beating four lengths so we have to be at our absolute top to beat these horses. The horses so far are a rock hard race fit. Credit to all the connections and everyone involved with the winner and the place getters. It's a fantastic race and my horse is a champion. We've just got to get him back there and he's not far off.
Speaker 2So there's a beating jockeys there, Gator. A couple of really interesting comments. We'll start off with Sir Delius, who was the favourite for the cocked plate right throughout this spring, but he really hasn't rocked up this spring. He hasn't been at his best for maybe a host of different reasons, but maybe he's had enough as a stallion that he's looking to do other things now. I don't know. What do you make of him? Adrian Bott says that he'll be better for the champion stakes. I think that's what they'll push on towards, but he's hard to have now, isn't he?
Speaker 3Yeah, look, I think we're all smart after the race. Now, I think he'll run sixth now. But before the race, so the reason why he was liked by some was his third up profile. His previous two campaigns, he's been pretty good first up, pretty good second up, then goes to the roof third up. So that's what you were banking on. His two runs back had been just okay. There was no real sign apart from his own CV that he was going to come out and go through the roof. So for me, I think I had him fourth or fifth pick. He ran, he was the best of the on paces. If you're looking for a positive, he joined in at the 300 and had no answer for said run-ons. Five lengths to margin from the winner. So it was an even to sound effort with the race shape. Up against is how I marked him.
Speaker 2Having a look at the Bet365 market now for the champion stakes, I think the majority of these runners will be backing up in that champion stakes. I think Eliana's still got a small question mark on her. But if I was a betting man, I reckon she's probably a big chance to head there. She's the favourite 325, Cosmic Crusader 4, Birdman 450, Serdelius $5 and then out to a horse like Omni-Man at $8. So Cosmic Crusader, if he does back up, shouldn't he be favourite, Gator?
Speaker 3Yes. Because he just beat them all. Yeah. And ran past
Speaker 2them. Yeah, sorry.
Speaker 3I was going to say, if you get a bit of rain, it's only a bonus. Yeah, so he should be favourite. I imagine if he was C. Marcy Waller, he would be. He would have been four points shorter in this race and would be hot favourite for that race if they go there.
Speaker 2When I was watching the race, when Eliana loomed, I thought it was just all over. I don't know if she just went under slightly or she's not as good as we think she is. Or is that a bit harsh?
Speaker 3Yeah, look, I thought she ran really well. I had her down the batting order a little bit as well based on I just thought she's looking for further. I didn't think she'd quicken in time. Now that aspect, I actually got wrong because she moved into the race beautifully, as you say. Her only problem was she found two a little bit better. So she's been beaten only 0.2 of a length from Birdman for second and then just pretty much bang on one length from Cosmic Crusader. She's beaten Chao off a clear length into fourth. So she's run well. But yeah, she's obviously not, you know, I think many thought, sort of hoping perhaps she's the next via, she's not going to be the next Wings, but they thought she might be the next perhaps via Sistana. She's not that. I still have a feeling she's more an endurance athlete, more in the very elegant camp, but who am I to argue with that stable?
Speaker 2Yeah, I think that like what, I know Cosmic Crusader sprinted too quickly, Faliana and Pike had the last crack at McDonald, but I thought that she had a chance to beat Birdman, who kicked back to beat her. And so I thought she was going to run second all win clearly. And I thought Birdman was very good. It'd be interesting to see who finishes in front of each other there in the champion stakes. Yeah, well
Speaker 3I thought, look, I thought all three of them had every chance. So the winner ran past the other two and Birdman copped, he raced a bit tight, but he was out well and truly in time. And Aliana she looked, as I say, she ran really well, but the problem is there were two horses in front of her at the end of the race. So she gets a bronze medal instead of a silver or gold. So that's as simple as that. You know, all we ask for is every horse gets their chance, you know, and then give us a level playing field, get every horse to have their chance and then punters have a chance to win. We have a really good chance to assess who the best athlete is. What did you make of Charwolf? No, he was good. Same problem though. He had three horses in front of him, so he doesn't even get a medal, but he was certainly a sound effort. You know, I think I had him at sixth. He ran about where I thought he'd run.
Speaker 2What about the times that they suggest they went quick up front? I was listening to the Noonan boys there yesterday. They were indicating it wasn't a as fast run Cox plays we thought it would be when they broke down the sectionals. But when you have a look at those horses on pace, I know it was different because they did have to get out of their comfort zone to get past those three roads in the early part. I speak of Land Legend and Light Infantryman, but both horses didn't show up. They're beaten a long way there on Saturday. Yeah, they were.
Speaker 3They were way below well, expectation for many. I know Land Legend was 40 to 1, but Light Infantryman was, you know, semi in the market. Irrespective of that, I thought they'd hold on better, but the look, the race shape was dead against by, you know, in this particular race and by this part of the day. Times are really interesting. There aren't any 2040 metre races at Flemington, so I don't really know what we're comparing to on the day. They would have been leading the three-year-olds by, what, 10 lengths and they would have been leading the mares in the last race by oh, quick maths 18 lengths. So, you know,
Speaker 2that says it all. When they get beat, all those horses on pace got beat a fair way there on the weekend. And they can be the best judge, your eye at the end of the day. Who's a better cup chance before we move on from the Cox Plate? St George or Middle Earth?
Speaker 3St George is going better. Yeah, for sure. You know, I think they're both were lovely trials. But, you know, St George was better. I mean, not only did he beat Homesuit Ilias and Wooloven, he beat Middle Earth five lengths, four and a half, and you know, with a bit more luck, he probably finishes a half length closer. So that's about as good as Melbourne Cup trials get in a fast run Cox play. His problems, the internationals and how good, A, how good are they? And B, are they going to turn up? So if you want a better example of form meaning almost nothing and who settles in better, you see Point of Law go to Geelong and win like media puzzle, then you see the other thing they backed in the Moonee Valley Cup, he's supposed to be a better horse, run like a bastard.
Speaker 2So I just
Speaker 3can't keep up, really.
Speaker 2We will get to that in a moment. I don't know if he ran like a bastard. I just thought, like, he wasn't ridden to his strengths. Yeah, okay. I might have been a fraction
Speaker 3harsh there. I just think, yeah, like
Speaker 2if you're a football coach, you go, this is how I want you to play to get the best out of our athletes. And I think that they went too slow for Kislyar. But we'll get to that Moonee Valley Cup meeting or that Moonee Valley Cup race. Straight after this, this is Giddy Up and the Breakdown here on this Monday morning.
Speaker 4Under the enormous pressure, Mr. Monaco right down the outside is unleashing two. It's Athel Wolf as they reach the clock tower in front. But Juja Kibo and Mr. Monaco are sprinting hard down the middle of the course. Then King Pedro, Kings Valley Lake, Juja Kibo just in front of Mr. Monaco. Kings Valley flying, Juja Kibo. Juja Kibo's won it.
Speaker 2So another one into the Melbourne Cup for Kiramar. Juja Kibo, who was stiff not to be in a Caulfield Cup after winning a Metro, defeats Kings Valley. He's been mining a Caulfield Cup and a Moonee Valley Gold Cup but can't get a start in our great race. Mr. Monaco third. King Pedro didn't have much luck. Either did Pinhole. So they're unlikely to get into the Melbourne Cup. And Kislyar SP'd what he was double figures when the markets opened for this race. He SP'd $3.80 and finished
Speaker 3midfield gator. Yeah, that's right. And I certainly take your point on him. He did a little bit of early work and then had the good run after that. But maybe he wasn't ridden the air spot onto his attributes. So it's probably a little harsh on him earlier. You know, he still had a lot of horses in front of him at the end. And one of them was Autumn Mystery at 1,001. And Valiant King and Jenny Vermoes. I'm not sure I'd put that on my CV. But anyway, the winner was terrific. You know, well back outside with a trial from the gate. By race seven, what we didn't know was this is how things would pan out. So Surf and Bird won the previous race and went up and sat second. The first three races were pretty much won by horses you know right up near the speed or um and even on that inside route so things swung around a bit and the trifecta here were all middle of the track probably adds to the run of king pedro the action was wider he was held up at a key stage you mentioned the luckless pinhole um but the trifecta were all really good you know mr monica covered a bit of ground king's valley followed juja kibo everywhere couldn't run past him with a kilo less so i think i know who the better horse is and credit to this winner he's absolutely flying they've got him flying you know he won a metro he quickened like a above average one off a moderate speed uh this time he was able to to be ridden a bit colder and join in strongly so he's got a few strings
Speaker 2to his bow juja kibo mr monica um saint george and also of course chocolates the kiramar runners that um and middle earth that all competed um on saturday that will go into our great race alexis melbourne cup i've asked kieran right throughout this process who his best chance is in a melbourne company and he's got of course point of law as well and he keeps going back to middle earth gator which i find really fascinating well
Speaker 3i mean he ran so well in the race last year didn't he you know um he was terrific so um when he came here uh he obviously wasn't fully acclimatized yet but he just wasn't quickening in his races obviously trips were too short once he got out to 3200 he ran his best race so um i have no doubt that that's in the back of a lot of people's minds on pure evidence um i'm looking at this race from a form perspective on saturday and i don't know how he turns the tables on saint george here in a melbourne cup except that he's ticked that two mile box and saint george hasn't yet so um yeah i'll leave that up to punters
Speaker 2race six was the key or a stud mile and surfing bird was able to get a lovely run off a slow tempo to win this race over buckaroo and another wheel and this is how she did it and she'll be on the quick back up after this of course this saturday to compete in a empire rose most likely taking on horses like lady shenandoah and pride of jenny but this is how she took out the key or a stud mile on
Speaker 4saturday run for home 500 meters to go astral flames had a good run by about two and a half lengths to surf and bird and then came another will pondalawi further back for roche next in the field is on display brought towards the outside still with a bit to do it's astral flame 250 meters to go giving the favor to race surf and bird a length off it they were followed by another will buckaroo and sun god but surf and bird let down approaching the 100 meters followed by buckaroo and another will surf and bird in front buckaroo coming at surf and bird but the bird won she'll get a
Speaker 2different tempo this week against the pride of jenny pride of jenny i think she's not completely locked in for that empire rose just yet after having that setback before the king charles but if she does go down that path it will be a different challenge for surf and bird gator
Speaker 3oh no doubt yeah yeah but uh she was terrific on saturday wasn't she she beat a couple of good ones um in buckaroo and another will who are group one winners in their own right you know buckaroo should have won a corfield cup he's gone within centimeters of winning a cox plate he's no slouch um and none of those horses will be there because they're males yeah you know and the tab empire roses of course um for the girls i think it's a really good race for her she ran really similar time or rating if you like but i think she's a really good race for her she ran really similar time or rating if you like to lady shenandoah when they when they raced on the same day on that track the caulfield um guineas day so she's got a seat at the table for sure yeah
Speaker 2blake shim will ride in the empire rose with geordie charles getting suspended 8 44 plenty of questions coming through and statements on the garage horse and hound text line we're going to take a break and come back and have a look at a few of the other features there at flemington on cox plate day straight after this
Speaker 1we'll come back to you in just a few minutes and then we'll get back to you in just a few minutes and then we'll come back to you in just a few minutes join the conversation text us on 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall
Speaker 4extra galactic splashback ray magnario trying to wind up it's the widest and lefrakar is last mazu 300 metres to go putting in some short ones now jigsaw about two lengths away and then came smooth chino and back behind them extra galactic it's mazu with 150 to go smooth chino is attacking it with extra galactic it's mazu with smooth chino over the top smooth chino takes the lord kicking mazu this is it was a
Speaker 2great race mazu and smoochino um went at it down that straight extra galactic back and third was beaten just over a lengthening ray bignario fourth but um indy wine it can take a bow along with austin galati this was one of the stories of the day as well gator yeah it was a
Speaker 3great story and it just shows you similar to perhaps cosmic crusader willy what um what an underrated aspect of the form is jockey and horse rapport you know i think it's really important you know and puntus and me as well you know should be taking perhaps a little more notice of that and um this horse was terrific i mean he had the perfect run um and then you just have to be good enough to win and he was and he knuckled down really well mazu he's never really been one of mine i don't know how he's you know obviously new stable a new environment pretty much as a wet tracker but he was brave you know he sort of beat off jigsaw and then and then was once he was colored he was in for the fight um extra galactic was back almost as if she was unbeatable and but once she spotted them seven or eight lengths it was just a bridge too far wasn't it um but she give her credit she has a real crack um actually ran into one of the owners after the race and uh he was a bit disappointed but i said mate your girl tries her backside off you see her pin her ears back and have a really has a crack she's just not you know she's just lacks that elite level talent i think but her application
Speaker 2is unquestioned i agree with you there like she had it she was unlucky in a good wood um but it wasn't a vintage good wood and she couldn't win it that day and then she's been brave since then and she might win a group one but she um yeah she's in a group two like that um she had to be at her best and she ran into some nice horses and smooth channel and mazu has just been a grand old campaigner for his connections over the the journey as well so um i don't think any of these horses will be going to a champion sprint i think they'll look for different options whether that be a winner bottom or maybe a one of the slot races there um i think the slot race the 1200 meter cranburn slot race could be where smoochino goes next so there'll be different options for a few of those connections regarding their charges heading towards the mcqueen stakes like ray mcnerio how do you think he's going he'll be heading to perth for the winter bottom yeah well
Speaker 3obviously the first run at caulfield was no guide um on this day he was back just off extra galactic and ran on strongly with her so um i marked them both probably you know a good eight out of tens that's still an a um but you know given this particular uh shape of race and those two the two up front wouldn't come back to them so yeah he couldn't quite run past extra galactic but you know he's going to win this race so he's going to win this race he's going to win i don't think that's disastrous no uh for him you know these second and third level sprints preferably are right right in his wheelhouse yeah hey
Speaker 2we'll take a break we'll come back and have a look at the the vars there on saturday a traditional lead up to saturday's vrc derby join the conversation text
Speaker 1us on oh four double nine seven three six seven three six live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall the
Speaker 4empire behind them then came true rebel yet to be called upon joley runs up behind them just needing a bit of room and salan is producing up the center so the front runner skewer with on the outside gil just 250 meters to go here's true rebel the outside closing and then came salan asked for the ultimate effort at the clock tower it's a real battle here with skewer and true rebel stride for stride skewer brave and true rebel who's peppering away on the outside of the hundred true rebel forges to the front and wins it by a half-legged skewer so that was true
Speaker 2rebel for danny o'brien he is the favorite with bet 365 now for the derby after winning the vars stormy marco into six dollars confirmed this morning that that's where he is going james mcdonald will ride cormier 750 comes out of the spring champion stakes as well um so that's the story with the market for the derby do you want to be with the sydney three-year-olds or the melbourne
Speaker 3three-year-olds gator yeah i'm not sure i'll do the form during the week but uh this horse did a good job on saturday didn't he i mean there's a little question mark on his uh pedigree how strong he'd be at 2040 meters but he ticked that box they certainly ran along and not only that skewer the leader was annoyed sort of mid-ray so i think i'd set it up for one of the run-ons and he was able to to finish too well after spotting them you know some seven lengths um so he did a good job skewer was terrific in defeat though yeah albeit on pace inside rail looked looked the place to be early and then things leveled out as i referenced earlier solan finished off well without um you know followed the winner everywhere and couldn't reel him in so she i've marked her a sound effort so the winner you know deserves his place near the top of the market but let's have a look at that race a little more forensically before our game plan on thursday what did you make
Speaker 2of the sydney three-year-olds cormier and stormy marco on saturday heading towards the derby gator
Speaker 3yeah so they were coming through that real blanket finish race weren't they leading into that both of the races and um proximity i won that race and she was too good for those two boys again but she's for the Oaks, and rightly so. I mean, she's run good time on Saturday, and she beat Global Goal, who just won a Group 1 flight stake. So, look, Cormier led and was gallant. Stormy Marco was sort of three lengths off Global Goal as they straightened it and ran that girl to about a length and a half. So, they've both run well. I'm struggling at this point to line them all up.
Speaker 2Skua's the interesting one. He got headed and then kicked back to finish second. I wonder if they'll just put the handlebars down from the start in the derby over the 2,500 to try and take probably the athletes with a better turn of foot than him out of their comfort zone earlier.
Speaker 3Yeah, the key to that is obviously he's still got to be able to relax and harness that energy, doesn't he? So, he's clearly a work in progress for a stable who absolutely know what they're doing. But, yeah, he's… If he can harness that energy the first half of a derby trip, he can absolutely win it. He looks a real endurance athlete to me.
Speaker 2Cannington's a beauty. She was terrific to defeat her out. Angel's Fury was the beaten favourite. What did you make of her?
Speaker 3Yeah, well, given it was race four and she led inside, I don't know if she had a bit of a pest. But, yeah, I think they would have left a little disappointed given how confident they were. So, she was no match from about the 150. But the first three races, those horses on the rail, either won or ran really well. Skewer and then the two winners up the straight came through on the inside. So, from that aspect, probably a touch disappointing. Aroused may well have cost herself just by running around. But, gee, she's a good talent. And Caddington had the last look at her and ran her down. She beat three good fillies here. Shanna got a lot of time for. And you mentioned Angel's Fury. So, only start number three for the winner. So, she was excellent.
Speaker 2Horses that we need to be following, Gator, from Melbourne and Sydney this weekend?
Speaker 3Yeah, well, I think… Still a decent, I forgive Fowle, wasn't there, out of those. But let's just see where a few of these are going. Obviously, there's a lot of races, like 36 of them over the next four days. So, we'll be monitoring that and hopefully finding a winner in each of those races.
Speaker 2Yes, it's going to be a busy time for the AusRacing family as well as you get set for your biggest week, Gator. You'll be on Channel 9's coverage. We'll have you on Giddy. You'll be up. You'll be everywhere. So, rest up, prepare, and I wish you the best of luck for battle.
Speaker 3Well, it's a lot of fun. You wouldn't want to be working in any other industry, mate. But Cup Week's insane, but as I say, a lot of fun. But Thursday game plan, it all starts there. Good on you. Thanks for that, Gator.
Speaker 2Ciao. That was David Gailey with the breakdown. And don't forget the Peninsular Cup Mornington Racecourse this Sunday, November 1. Tickets are just $25. So, that's the Peninsular Cup at the Mornington Racecourse. Sunday, November 1, tickets $25.

Summary:

FAQs

Cosmic Crusader won the Cox Plate, becoming a remarkable winner seventh-up. The performance was praised as an amazing training result for Andrea Leak and Bob Peters.

Sir Delius was considered the disappointment of the race despite being the long-time favourite. The panel noted he was the best of the on-pace runners but had no answer when the run-on horses challenged.

True Rebel won the Vase for Danny O'Brien and is now the favourite for the VRC Derby. The panel noted he ticked the distance box by running on strongly from off the pace.

The panel rated St George as the better Cup chance, as he beat Middle Earth by around five lengths in the Cox Plate. However, they noted Middle Earth has already proven himself over two miles.

Aliana was rated as having run really well, moving into the race beautifully but finding two horses better on the day. The panel suggested she may be more of an endurance athlete than an elite sprinter.

Surf and Bird won the Group 2 race over Buckaroo and Another Wil. The panel believes the Empire Rose is a really good race for her, though Pride of Jenny would present a different challenge.
