Monday Breakdown - Sydney review w/Mick Gannon (26/10)

This transcript is a recording of an Australian racing podcast, Giddy Up with Gareth Hall, interspersed with two advertisements. The first promotes Dupixent (dupilumab), a non-steroid prescription medicine for patients one year and older weighing at least 33 pounds that treats eosinophilic esophagitis by reducing esophageal inflammation and improving swallowing, along with warnings about allergic reactions and the need to consult a doctor. The second is a Google Chrome ad featuring Gemini's web capabilities. The core content is the Monday Breakdown, in which host Gareth Hall and analyst Mick Gannon review the weekend's racing. Central Europe scored a dominant Group 3 victory, overcoming a track bias favouring on-pace runners, and will now spell before targeting autumn features. Lindemann notched another win, taking his earnings to $6.1 million, though Gannon felt rivals showed insufficient intent. Proxima Dea remained unbeaten with a strong staying win in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes and is now Oaks favourite, while Stormy Marco shapes as a leading VRC Derby contender, particularly after Mind Games was confirmed to be heading to the paddock. Lazzaro won the Invitation, with Infancy catching the eye in second. The hosts also list horses to follow, discuss TAB restrictions on Melbourne Cup field sizes, and assess Flemington track conditions ahead of the carnival.

Speaker 1Having uncontrolled eosinophilic esophagitis or EOE can mean you're stuck in many ways, like cutting your food into tiny pieces or stuck chewing food for a long time. Dupixent dupilumab, a prescription medicine for patients one year and older weighing at least 33 pounds can help with that. It's a breakthrough treatment that can reduce inflammation in the esophagus and improve swallowing. How about this? Dupixent is not a steroid. It proactively treats EOE so you can get ahead of it.
Speaker 2Severe allergic reactions, including skin reactions, can occur. Get help right away if you have trouble breathing or wheezing or swelling of your face, mouth, tongue, or throat. Tell your doctor of new or worsening joint aches and pain or a parasitic infection or asthma. Don't change or stop other treatments without talking to your doctor.

Speaker 5Why so hard peel? So does memorize the udder. Omelon gets onto their backs. Further back then to Spalpeen and Central. The favourite is coming right down the outside. Why so hard moved up? Lafitte takes the run on the inside, and Central Europe is winding up. And quickly, Central Europe went past them at the 100 metres. Why so hard's got no answer. Then came Lafitte, but this is a big win for Central Europe. Oh, Central Europe, never in doubt.
Speaker 6What a champion he is, Mick Gannon. I thought I'd say hello to you.
Speaker 7Yeah, just dominating the Group 3, Central Europe. It was a good meeting.
Speaker 6I told you he was a good Group 3 horse. He's taking out the calendar press, and he finally breaks through. So there you go. No, he's a good horse, Gareth. Yeah, he's a great horse, isn't he? Bloody paid $3.40. Yeah, good win too.
Speaker 7But I bet some $4.40, so it was good for the punters out there. But look, on a day where you couldn't make up much ground, like the majority of the winners on the day were within sort of like a length of the lead over 600 metres. Lane one, two, three in the home straight was just red hot. So there's two horses on the day that were, you know, managed to win against that Patton, Central Europe and Declatchy Boulevard. So I think you can add merit to both of those wins, but he'll be right. He'll go for a spell now. He'll be competitive in the Guineas in the autumn for sure, because he's got a bit of growing to do as well.
Speaker 6Yeah. Lindemann defeats Tom Kidd, and he just keeps on winning, Lindemann. I had a look at his record. It's 44 starts, 10 wins, but he's won $6.1 million. Extraordinary, really, when you think about it.
Speaker 7It's pretty impressive. It just goes to show, if you have a decent stayer in this country, you can make plenty of cash. But again, just lands on speed, slow tempo, and it steals the race. So, you know, well done to Nash. I would have thought at some stage that we would have been more positive on Ilias, given what happened last start. I would have liked to see a little bit more intent there. And I think if they showed more intent, you could probably overturn Lindemann, but alas, they didn't.
Speaker 6He wins those races when he's got no pressure on Lindemann, and he was given a peach once again by Nash. The group one was the Moen and Shandon Spring Champion Stakes, 2,000 metres. The flight stakes winner, Global Gold, was the favourite from the other filly who was unbeaten, Proxima Dea, and David Payne's filly remained unbeaten after she did this.
Speaker 5Into the straight now, and Cormier trying to weather the storm, but Proxima Dea, she's getting serious now and really serves it up to Cormier. Two further back to Global Gold, it's Proxima Dea getting ahead in front to Cormier. Global Gold two lengths away, she's trying her heart out. Proxima Dea, she's dour. She's strong, and she's the best stayer. David Payne does it again, Proxima Dea by two.
Speaker 6Yeah, so Proxima Dea is the $2 favourite now with Bet365 for the Oaks. Stormy Marco's the second favourite behind True Rebel for the VRC Derby on Saturday, and Cormier is the third favourite there, Mickey Gannon. Would you be backing any of these horses going forward towards the Flemington Carnival?
Speaker 7Yeah, absolutely. Well, I think a few months ago, we actually identified Proxima Dea as an Oaks champion. Proxima Dea's chance coming out of a midway, which is just wild. And, you know, there's probably a few texts where she's just straying, but hopefully a few people did jump on at that stage. Look, she's flying. She deserves a favourite for sure. Looking sectionally wise, she was stronger than Global Gold late, so no real excuses there for fast tempo. I think she'll just come out and win an Oaks for sure. Heading towards the Derby, what do you do with this? Like, so Stormy Marco, he just needs to settle a little bit closer and run and use his sort of turn of foot.
Speaker 6Is he any good, Mick? Is he any good?
Speaker 7Yeah, I spent most of the morning trying to work that out. I think he is. I think he is good. So, look, you wouldn't mind a bit of sting out of the ground, but that would probably help as well. Do you have to be good, though, to win a Derby at this point in time? Like, it's not that strong. No. Mind games, we'd love to see mind games going. They're not sure they will. Might be spelled going, coming back for the autumn, but it'd be interesting to see, because I thought he was really good through the line. Scorolli, okay. If you said to me at this stage, guarantee that mind games was going to the Derby, I'd be very happy to see that. I'd like to see mind games going to the Derby, which I don't think he is, but we might find out sooner rather than later. I think he'd be the better bet now, the prices, because what, one's $26, one's $6. But, you know, Jay, you got on X this morning, artist formerly known as Twitter, and gave everyone the $13 push, so that's good for the punters. They'll be very happy.
Speaker 6I'll see if mind games is going to the Derby or not. Because you could back them both. Yeah. Lazzaro, she was just too good, wasn't she, in the invitation, well under Tommy Bear and Chris Waller. Yeah. Infancy second, Verona Rose was back in third.
Speaker 7Yeah, it's just a day of showing intent, and if you showed intent on a track that played to that advantage, you were going to get the results, and Tommy could have gone back. There was talk that he may have, but obviously with those two emergencies in the race, they were the key speed influences, and they came out, and it was just a very simple map for Tommy. Rolled forward and proved to be the best horse. So, good ride, showed some intent, got the job done. Infancy was enormous, absolutely enormous. Another dirty 10 yards, but it was 10 yards, and he could have won the race. So, you follow her, she's flying.
Speaker 6Yeah, Trent just confirming that news that Buckaroo will be going to Perth for the railway northerly. So, no champion's mile. So, she might race against herself, along with Seppel's in the champion's mile with the way it's looking at the moment, Autumn Glow. So, there you go. It'll be interesting to see what happens there regarding that champion's mile, and Tommy Charlton's just sent through a text message. Paddock for Mind Games. So, there you go. Yeah, there you go. Mind Games is in the paddock.
Speaker 7It makes the Stormy Marco bet even better, Gareth.
Speaker 6Yes. Did everyone get on? Let me know if you got on at the $13, whatever, but- Someone's got on, because he's now six. Yeah, but the problem with that is that, I don't know what price he should be. Because we, McDonald will ride, trained by Chris Waller, he's probably going to start close to favourite, I reckon, Stormy Marco.
Speaker 7Yeah, you got to stop tagging Bet365 when you do that. You alert the traders to it.
Speaker 6Okay. Braden, well, he owes me a few beers, and I let everyone down with the top four multi, so I apologise for that. It was tough. No, you were brave, Gareth. No, I was brave, but I should have went Cosmic Crusader. But in the end, the three-year-olds, with the way that they began, and those horses missed the kick slightly, they were out of their comfort zone a long way from home, unfortunately.
Speaker 7Yeah. Look, it's always easier in hindsight. But I think everyone was happy. Everyone was happy. Everyone was happy with their decision on the day. The horse was 20, 31s into 16s or whatever. You've just got to live and die by the sword, and unfortunately, we died.
Speaker 6I died by the sword, all right. My social media was set alight, anyway. And then it was worse, because everyone was trying to give me credit for Cosmic Crusader, who I didn't tip, but I indicated that he's a star. And then they were going off at me, saying, "What? You're taking credit for Cosmic Crusader, and you tip Light Infantry, man?" But anyway, that's life. What a world. That's why I leave the tipping to you, Mickie Gadden. What horses do we need to be following? Plenty
Speaker 7of horses to follow. Let's work through them. We'll work through them from race book order. Gee, that's disappointing, that last race. I think what I want to say is, I'd like them to get the last race of a big race day right. Do we have to have average races at the end of the day? It does my head in, anyway. That's another issue altogether. Let's work through some horses to follow. Welcome to the show, for sure. Desperately unlikely you can't win from there on a day where a race is like that. Yeah, that's right. You can't win in a race. That's right. Yeah. Vivier was really good, Gareth, in the Craven Plate, as was Plymouth. You followed both of those moving forward. Central Europe for sure. Why so hard? Impossible. Well, I shouldn't say impossible set-up. You got beaten by a really good horse. It was a tough set-up given 1,200 to 1,600 metres, but understand why they rolled the dice. He's a really good horse. He can be competitive in the autumn as well. Kieran Starr, Jack Aranda, both of those sort of could have gone a lot closer with a bit better race shapes as well. So plenty of horses to follow out of the meeting. If you follow all of those,
Speaker 6getting winners soon all right then um plenty of text messages coming through as well in 2026 i still can't get my head around they're not being emergencies in the melbourne cup as far as i'm aware it's a tab issue and they can't have more than 24 anything can happen in the days leading up to the race and others should be able to get in to make sure we have a full field of 24 that is from reese goodwood he makes a very good point i asked you mclaughlin when he joined me on the show a few weeks back the ceo of tabcorp he tells me that that that um situation and a solution isn't far away maybe not this year but next year
Speaker 7in a world of ai gareth and the coding ability of ai and the geniuses we have involved in this game it should have been solved two years
Speaker 6ago 100 what'd you make of flemington before we let you go
Speaker 7mickey i was so glad that the track turned around and you're able to make ground so that was really good because i was looking dire there um it was a good day of racing i'm yet to fully review the meeting but um it was a great day racing looking forward to getting down there and can't wait can you confirm g for the punters rail stage in the truth for derby yeah it'll be
