You've been on Kai's stuff too, right? - Yeah, I put him on Kai like a few times. I didn't do like none of the Mafia times though. I wasn't there for none of the Mafia times, but I just put up on him like a random, random ass day, he's just streaming, we just kicked it for a little bit. - So how you feeling, bro? How is everything? - Bro. - Life's good? - It's been a crazy, it's been a crazy like two years, bro. Like, life changer. I feel good though. - Like this though, right? - This, bro. Literally this. I mean, I feel like everything was kind of like a stepping stone, like starting out. I started singing background for her, then we opened up for Coldplay. And then from that, I went straight into the movie. So it was like, everything just changed so fast, bro. - So how did you, so let's go from the beginning. So I toured with her. How did that all happen? - Yeah. So that was, I want to say that was like 20, like 2021. Like, this is like still in the pandemic, like working out of it though. So mask and all that stuff. And we, she was looking for new bands and background singers for a new tour. And we was in Brooklyn and like, there was, I heard about audition. So I just went and I did like a trial run with them for the day and I was 16 at the time. So she was, we was trying to figure out how that would work. Like how I'd be able to like be on tour. And like, I couldn't legally fly by myself. It's like, they had to give me a guardian and stuff like that. But I did the audition that day and it was like, nah, we got to figure out how to get him on the road. - So what you were like, what, 14, 15? - I was, I was 16. - And you were doing background for, that's crazy. - So what was your audition? Did you know, like, did you know, like, did you leave knowing like, yeah, I ain't gonna lie. They, they, they going with me. - Yeah, they rocked me, yeah. They said, they said it by the end of the joint. Like I did. - Oh, they said it right there? - Yeah. - Fine. - So I did, like I learned a couple of the songs before I got there and then I sung best part and I did like Daniel Caesar's part. And after that, it was like, yeah, he's going with us. - So, so you started acting after the pandemic? Completely? - After the pandemic. - All right, so you don't, have you been to an in-person audition before? - I did once when I was a kid. - Okay. - But like that was, it was for, remember that new edition story? - Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. - I auditioned for that. Didn't get it, but that was my only in-person audition. - Bro. - How, what year was that? That was like, what, 20? 'Cause when did it, when did the new edition come out? - Like 2018, 2019. - Damn. - Yeah. - That's crazy, so, yo. - Yeah, it was in the city. - Bro, honestly, the way the business is right now, bro, you might not ever have another in-person audition, bro. - Bro, I'm good with that. I'm good with that, bro. I rock with the soft tape. I was doing it before I liked it, but now I'm like, I want in-person back. - Really? - Like, dude, I love in-person. - Yeah. - I just love it. - I like, like we had this conversation back in time. I like in-person because like, you have to have like a different level of preparation. - Yeah. - For sure. - Number one, so it kind of just like motivates you to really be prepared. Number two. - You're off book. - Yeah, yeah, you gotta be off, yeah, yeah, yeah. - Off the books. - Gotta be off book. And then number two is just like, you just get to be in a room with the people. Like, you know, like the producer is there. So whether or not, like we say this all the time, whether or not you, you know, you get the role, you kind of just capture the room and they'll have you like, they'll have you in their minds for whatever else they have. - Something else, yeah. - Yeah, yeah, so. - And it's like the presence too. - Yeah. - You can't beat that. - I think that's the biggest thing. - The presence in the room and like, yeah, for sure. - So, so you're on tour with her. - Yep. - What's that like? Is it, is crazy stuff happening or is it just kind of, it's very, is it calm? - Nah, it was, it was dope, bro. Like that was my first time really, I guess, like being out and like away from my family for long periods of time. I grew up in a musical family. So like everybody sings or plays some type of instrument. So that was my first time really being on my own. Like I didn't, you know, go to college and nothing like that. So like, that was like my experience, like getting to see what it's like to be an adult, like on your own, on the, on the road. So it was, it was lit, bro. - That's fire. - It was fire. - Did you have the moments like, damn, I miss my family. I wish I had somebody on the road with me. - Yeah, we would be going like, well, I had people that I knew on the tour already. So it was kind of like familiar faces, but I, it was like, yeah, I was just on my own. I'm like kind of just doing my own thing and it was fun, but I was still doing homework and stuff. I was like, bro, I will be doing, you do a show and I got to go back. I got finished. I want to say I finished like 10th through 12th grade on the road, like just remote. So it was, it was a, it was a crazy lock in, bro. - How long, how long was the tour? How long did it last? - The tour, bro, we toured for like three years straight. So it would be like three months. We'll go back home and then do another three months. So it was like off and on, but like we continued to tour. - So between the three months, how long of a break would it be? - It would be like, maybe like a week. - Oh my God. - Maybe like a week or two and I'll go back. So that, when I first, when it first started happening, I was still in school. So I go on the, on the road and I come back to school and like be like two, three weeks behind, like on work. - Oh my God. - And like, yeah, we got to figure this out. So they finally figured out a way for me to do everything remote. And then I was going after that. - I would be in school, I would be sitting down, bro. I couldn't imagine not being in school. - I'd be in math class or some algebra, just be sitting there like, bro, what am I doing here, bro? - But realistically, what us three, has any of us used algebra ever? - Never in my life. - Since the day we left school. - Since I left school, I haven't used algebra once. - It's insane to me. So wait, so you would be on Zoom, like on the tour bus? - Well, it wasn't Zoom. So I had all my, I had all my work for the year. So I would just have to get it done. Like as much, so I'm the type of person, like I try to get my work done first so I could just do it. I like to think about it, have fun. So I would like do like, maybe like a week or two worth of work in one sitting. And then I'd be like, I got time to chill and then just keep up with it. - Yeah, I usually have the fun for the week or two, and then the day before it's supposed to be done, I'm like, oh my God. We kind of have flip-flop situations right there. Do you have a favorite city that you, like was there a city that you went to or a show that you remember that was just like, this is crazy? - Bro, we did a show in Manchester. - Oh yeah, the UK fans. - Bro, UK, bro. - Yeah. - Bro, they got like their respect for like music and stuff is just on a different level, I feel like. So the crowd was crazy. - Yeah. - So while you're touring, how did the audition for "Centers" happen? - So that was, I was doing a show. We were doing a show with her, I was singing background. And somebody at the show, Kevin Gelbart at CAA, he saw me in the crowd and he told her he should audition for this movie. And I think I was like 18, 18 at the time. So we get back home and she calls me one day and she tells me that. And she connected me with CAA and everything. And I just started sending auditions and stuff through there. I think I did like an interview while we was in, we did like a festival in Johannesburg in Africa. - Fire. - And I did like an interview literally in the hotel, just selling my name, height, whatever that I sent that in. I got a call back. I sent them another video of me like singing a song. Then I sent, then they asked for like a video of me playing the guitar. So I learned this, I learned "Bring It On Home" to me by Sam Cooke. It was like, like a five minute tutorial on YouTube. And I just learned it real quick. - That's fire. - I sent that in bro. And they was like, oh now he can play guitar. So I was like, yeah, they want to bring me in for an in-person audition. So once we got to that point, I was like, nah, this is getting serious. This was like maybe like a couple of weeks apart. So I get to LA and I get to the in-person audition and it's literally everybody in the room. Ryan Coogler was in the room. Michael B. Jordan was in the room. Louis Vigorentsen, the composer was in the room. Everybody was in there. So I was like, nah, they kind of fake ambushed me. - Oh, they didn't tell you any of this? - Nah, they didn't tell me all of them was going to be, I knew Mike was going to be in there. - But it's always kind of better. - Nah, true, true. - Because if you built that up in your head, yeah. - You would have had probably a different type, you would have had some nerves going, you feel me? They just like, you just got to show up, bro. That's crazy. - So I did everything in audition. It went well and went smooth. And then after that, they, the composer tried to get me to learn a song like on the spot and that's when they oh no he don't know how to play guitar i had to get like acting i mean um guitar lessons and all that stuff to prepare for the role so but yeah that was that was the audition so what was the did you do a scene scene in the audition yeah so which scene was it we did the scene he read the line for my my father like the opening scene when he's like going into the church and he's talking about the guitar and all that stuff and like you can't do that so we did that scene and then we did like i think one of the car scenes with me and him driving in the car so we did those two and after that it was like that that's fine were you reading with a casting director or was mike it was a casting director yeah yeah he was just watching no he was reading too oh but then i did some with the casting director too because she read the um she read perlene's lines okay damn yeah so you do you leave that audition thinking you're getting the movie or he's like yeah it was a mix bro it was like i felt good but it was like you never really know yeah right it's like i was like yeah like goodbye he's like we'll stay in touch i was like bro yes they always say that they always say that i got back home it was probably like a week like a week or two after that and ryan called me on my phone he was like bro he's like i want you to be a part of this project that's fine yeah i lost it that's fine and now was that your first time on a set yeah yeah and that's a big set we shot it in new orleans for like four months so like the first time being on the stage like they built the juke inside the station it was crazy bro that's fine it was like a whole new world he's gonna go shoot like another like movies and you'd be like this is not yeah he's like he's like i'm excited definitely excited for the next one but like everybody's like bro this experience is so different from anything else so you gotta like just take it for what it is so how the audition happened how much later did you start shooting um i'd say probably about like maybe like three months later okay because i had two months to prepare for the role so i worked with um beth mcguire like she was like the acting and dialect coach i worked with her and then i worked with the guitar teacher and we had two months before we went out to film and uh where did you guys film that in new orleans in new orleans and so well it's just fine the best fire such a great place to be out there bro it's a great place to be out there bro even the mothers nah bro mother's the soul food it's a crazy spot i haven't been a mother i'm slacking crazy spot where were you guys staying you did they have everyone in houses yeah that was crazy too like finding the houses and stuff was crazy but then i i um i found this one spot it's crazy because it was called the cotton mill it was a nice it was it was a dope spot yeah yeah we was there for four months it was like dope just kind of getting to be out like being amongst the people like everybody in new orleans like the uber drivers and stuff like that like they're just like like ryan like on set like how is he as a is ryan like on set like how is he as a is ryan like on set like how is he as a director is he director is he is he super hands-on with the actors does he let the actors do what they want like now he's super hands-on he's um the best way to describe him is really like a like a coach like he used to play football so i feel like he adapted a lot of those traits and like just kind of being a leader and like working with everybody he's super collaborative so it's like it's no wrong answer it's no wrong way to try you know different things it would be times where i would like be on set and i would ask him like yo how should i do this like how should i portray this and he'd be like yo what would you think like what is your interpretation of it so like he kind of gave everybody free reigns to try different stuff so it was like it made for a dope environment like yeah especially that being my first time and like kind of not wanting to like try too much or like embarrass myself he was like nah bro like throw all that out the window and like just just try different stuff yeah i feel like honestly that's what a lot of acting is is like being okay to fail or be embarrassed so that's when i think the the best stuff comes out for sure do you remember a moment where you were on that set where you tried something and maybe it made it on in the movie um or maybe seeing another person that did something and you're like oh wow that was interesting yeah yeah definitely um omar miller who played cornbread his improv is good delroy lindo too like both of them like the improv just is just crazy oh so they were improv that was yeah yeah like um there were the scene where we're doing like the chain gang like we're driving past and he's telling the story and then he starts going into song and starts singing all of that was like improv so it's like even me being the first time acting like kind of learning how to like just roll with it like it was it was it was different but it was it was crazy did you try any improv i feel like i did i don't remember i don't know if anything made it i don't know do you remember a uh a note that uh ryan had had given you that you remember that maybe was great or maybe helped you or like a specific thing or yeah he probably gave you a lot no no he did i'm trying to think if you like know one thing that you're like this is great because look i'm trying to get in the coogler set here this is close i'm getting right now i'm trying to think i don't know if i could think of anything in particular but like just on a daily it was just literally just about like just not being afraid to to try stuff like i think that was the biggest thing you know like i learned the lines down which was something i thought was going to be tricky too but it's like once you go day by day it's like you know what stuff you got to work on so it's like you learn your lines and then you practice it a certain way but like yeah it's just it's just always it was always dope how long was that shoot that was four months four months four months yeah yeah so that there's definitely a lot of notes that has a lot of notes he's like that's a lot of those so all right so the movie wraps movie wraps when you're making it are you and it's done are you like this is going to be a massive hit do you not know yeah what do you even think about it like you even think about that while you're on the set not for sure yeah sure like every day because it was it was like reading it on a page was one thing but then seeing it in person it was like a whole different thing yeah so it's like as we were making it like we felt like it was special and then like some stuff was just like it was like some stuff was just crazy bro like the like some of the things that ryan would like try on the day it was just like you'd never know like how it was gonna land so it's like we knew we had something special but we didn't know how people would react to it and then it turned out to be what it turned out to be so what do you do movie wraps before it comes out what's the next nine months of your life like are you back to doing homework or he's doing yeah the movie wraps but it hasn't come out yet yeah and there's like that period beforehand where you're like i might pop i'm like who knows yeah so i think i went back home um i chilled i got back in the studio we did a bunch of adr um yeah voiceover work and then i want to say maybe like a month or two like before like the trailer and all that stuff started coming out um mike facetimed me he showed me like the official like the unofficial trailer and i was just like blown away bro i was like nah this joint is about to go crazy bro it's about to go crazy did you see it for the first time at the premiere no no i saw it before that i had to yeah yeah yeah i had to bro and like that's the thing with ryan too it's like he he um he made sure everybody watched the movie he asked everybody the whole cast for their notes like what do you think so it was like even from the first like first draft he was i remember the first time he played it for us it was me it was omar delroy jack o'connell who plays remick um and he brought us to the theater to the warner brothers live and we watched it for the first time and we literally sat there after for like two hours just talking about the whole thing and like he's like yo send me your notes let me know what you think could be better what needs to be added back with and like that's that's literally how he is you drove home with the radio off after that bro he did not play i was speechless bro like i didn't have no words like i i couldn't even process like what i was seeing so leading up to the movie come out you start to impress yeah are you are you nervous about this yeah yeah that's i think that's when it really hit me like like everything that was about to happen like me like You know on the music side and kind of grinding like working my way up and then like getting this big opportunity I think maybe like leading leading right up to the press run like we did like PR sessions and stuff like that and like they're telling us like, you know You kind of got to keep the movie like like open-ended like call it like a genre bending film Like don't try to box it in just like it's all these different notes that I'm getting and I'm just kind of like getting in My head just like it's like how So I was like Stress that should be the worst. Yes the words cuz you get in your head before like you got like five six interviews lined up You like about to ask me the same questions, but how could I answer them different ways without? Saying what they don't want me to say Like just getting the hang of that black once I got into it. I became more comfortable became easy. Yeah, okay The movie comes out. Yeah Like what what's going through your head? Are you like cuz you up you pop like that was kind of like your moment Yeah, do you feel like? Do you feel do you feel overwhelmed like that happened soon? Or were you waiting for this your whole life? Like I'm always curious to know like what what in people's minds are they like? This was always meant to be at this moment or or was it oh this all happened overnight Like how did you feel? Yeah, I mean I knew I was always working towards something Like I knew I would eventually get to where I was going but I just didn't think it would be like this and like in in a Genre and in like a art craft that is so new for me like different for me, you know So I didn't think it would be Acting but it's like I kind of got to do a little bit of everything in this film So it was it was just crazy guys. So it's like learning all of those little things. It's like dang and it's also like you get to become a Different person, you know and kind of understand a different perspective with my music It's my perspective is my story and I get to portray how I want but like when it's acting you have to Become that character understand how that character thinks and then portray it, you know to other people. It's so funny like we've done how many episodes and I still ask him questions every episode I'm curious, but like wait, so when you're on a TV show, I don't know if you know this But there's a different director every episode for most TV shows I didn't know that so like some some directors will come in and they'll be kind of hands-on and then you'll go like a stretch of like five six episodes where the director won't say anything to you and You're just like like am I like doing? Okay, am I doing like good work, but they're honestly so wrapped up And their own stuff, they're they're wrapped up and like other stuff I think they would tell you if they needed something different but I'm the type of actor that I like being like like I don't know maybe if it's like positive reinforcement, I'm like You killed that scene like hell yeah, we're moving on. But when the directors goes we're moving on I'm like fuck They want me to do something different. How do you guys both feel like do you like the positive reinforcement? Would you rather director say nothing to you because I know actors that like both. Yeah, I would say I would say I like I like the positive reinforcement because it's just like it's just like You giving the director what he wants, you know I'm saying like when this is when they're just because a lot of directors aren't like that I mean they like they focus on the shot they focus on how they're you know Telling their story through the lens like rather than you know the actor So when this when you work with someone like that It's like you kind of do get in your head like damn was that take actually good or did the camera just pan the right? way that the director wanted it to pan you know what I mean? I don't know. I mess with both cuz at the at the same time if you're not, you know Doing what you're supposed to do even a director. That's not super hands-on. He's gonna come to you. Yeah if he's not you know if you work on one of those he's not coming to you telling you too much then that means you you most likely doing something right I'm right yeah yeah what about you I feel like definitely the positive reinforcement yeah I mean that being my first project Ryan he's super like I say super collaborative and like after every like especially when it's just you're seen like confirmed it like probably like two weeks before the Oscars it was like bro what two weeks get to it bro so we start we did we did like a couple days of rehearsal cuz that scene is like it's a lot going on it's a lot of different you know dancers and like musicians and stuff like that so we um started putting that together and then the day of I was just I feel like I was just dreaming bro I have to go back and watch it to really process everything that happened cuz like it was everything was just going but did the performance and then just got to enjoy the show but like being around like all of those people like you grew up watching this is crazy are you going in being like I want to win or you just like I'm happy I'm not I mean of course I really I wanted to win for Mike yeah I'm glad he won that book cuz he deserved it like just seeing the work that he did have money on him when I thought shall they was gonna have money on him winning did you talk to Mike did he think he was
