Michael Che w/ Sam Morril & Mark Normand - We Might Be Drunk Podcast
1h 30m 21s
The transcript captures a candid, reflective conversation about the realities of stand-up and sketch comedy, particularly within the context of *Saturday Night Live*. The comedian openly discusses the grind of press, travel, and media exposure—describing it as exhausting but deeply fulfilling. They highlight key moments from their career, such as performing with Bill Cosby at a private taping and early experiences in comedy clubs like The Strip, where they honed their craft. The discussion reveals a strong appreciation for the balance between innovation and tradition, such as the use of classic jokes (e.g., "cleaf") and the value of silence in comedy. They also reflect on the importance of live venues like Minnesota’s theater scene, which offers authentic, grassroots comedy culture. Writing is portrayed as a collaborative, fast-paced process, with Seth standing out for his ability to deliver strong, polished material quickly. Challenges like audience reactions, controversy over sensitive topics, and the emotional toll of live performances are acknowledged honestly. Ultimately, the conversation emphasizes that growth in comedy comes from embracing failure, self-criticism, and the “hard truth” of being a performer—where every set, even a bomb, is a learning experience. The tone is both humble and proud, underscoring a deep love for the craft and a commitment to staying true to the spirit of live comedy.
Hey folks, here we are. We might be drunk. We're back, baby. We got all Michael Jay. The fatty himself. You know him, you love him. They're the jokes, the specials, the scandals. How exhausted. How tired of this shit are you? Sucks. No, I just love you, love him. I just did one of these press things with a special out because I'd won't come out like two weeks before you. How fucking sick of it are you already? I hate it. Yeah. I hate it. It's a nightmare. It's the worst part of the gig and I love the gig so much that I'm willing to put up with it. Yeah. You know what I mean? We love comedy so much that we do all types of sad, sad things. I know. I don't like that. It's just like a lot of press and I don't even really care. It's just a lot. It's a lot. You got to get up early. You got to go talk to people who don't understand comedians for some reason. I don't even think they're that interested to be honest with you. Sometimes it feels like you ever feel that way. Of course. They have to use like a dog trainer than a chef. You know, you're just, you're just in a row of bullshit. Well, I don't even mind like like talk shows as much as what's quick as podcasts are cool and like talk shows are quick. But then there's always like, you know, the other stuff. Yeah. Yeah. I get it. We've done morning shows and they're like, so wacky boo. How do you come up with your material? And you go, well, I wrote this cleaf joke. I go, Jesus Christ. I'm like, oh, I forgot we can't speak here. Can't say cleaf. What is it about cleaf that is bad? You could probably say cleaf. I think you can say no. No. Carlin left that one out of the seven words. That's true. And I don't ABC. Good morning or whatever. Is it cleafing then? Was that? Yeah. It's old. Yeah. It's an innocent. It's a forest. The Virgin Mary cleafed. No, I know that you definitely can't say that in a morning. That's true. I know that you can cleaf and they've always cleafed. But I'm saying, was that like a phrase cleafing? Is that like a. That's a good question. Can we look up the weaf? When cleaf is that like a term originally? It was in Taming of the Shrew. Cheers, guys. Congrats on the new special. Thank you. Yeah. Thank you. A shot Minnesota. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Why did you land on Minnesota? You guys played Minnesota. You know, it's great. It's great. Yeah. I found out it's like an old Vaudville town too. I didn't know that. A ton of theaters. They had like a crazy theater scene. So it's just in the air. Yeah. Yeah. Something good about it. Prince Kurt Vonnegut. There's something about like Lizzo. Yeah. There you go. The Good Midwest hits for sure. Like there's some Midwestern cities where you're like, you just know it's going to be great. Yeah. Yeah. Kansas City is awesome. Um, um, um, Kansas City in a long time. Um, um, uh, Kansas City in a long time. Um, uh, yeah. That's a good one. What's that now? Um, on Nebraska. Oh, yeah. Chicago's amazing. Sure. You know, that's an obvious one, but like, you know, Detroit is good. Detroit's good. Detroit's really good. Yeah. Madison was constant great. Oh, forget about it. Milwaukee's great. It is. Milwaukee's good. Actually, that might be the most slept on one. Yeah, Milwaukee's got some great theaters and great crowds. That's true. It's, um, the flyover state is such an insult. It is. It is. Yeah. They are. No one says that should be higher though. I think that's like a Hollywood exec in the Ford. Right. That one says flyover states anymore. I mean, it's amazing. We live on this land mass that we can just jump around every weekend and do a whole different city. How do you guys do this? What? Like just talk. Yeah. When you got some say, say it. We're born you this quickly. No. I'm just this. This has got to be like what your your temp show. Second today. Second today. Second today. But how many do a week? About one. Oh, really? Yeah. We do last week. Yeah. You only do one show a week. Yeah. Okay. That's not fancy. Yeah. I thought you guys did every day. No. Oh my god. We don't have to go. Wait. Is this driving radio? Yeah. The other one with a job. Okay. How do you do what you do? You're doing long hours of that. I'd talk for two minutes a week. Yeah. But you're writing a lot of jokes for it. Well, I mean, barely. It's hard to do the topical jokes. And this is the hardest time to do topical jokes. It's hard to do topical jokes, but it's also easy to do topical jokes because they're slight. They you move on. You know, like if it's a good one lands you're happy. If they don't land, you got the another one coming. So it's like it's like a baseball average. Yeah. If I could get two out of about seven. Yeah. At a decent week. Yeah. You know all the same week. Yeah. But a decent week. Two out of seven. Respectable. Respectables. Respectable. Yeah. It's so funny that you guys, because I watched. I love you and Joe's. You do? Yeah. I love the. I like the joke. I don't watch the other sketches. I feel like you wouldn't like it. Oh, I love it. I'm. I'm. I've submitted. I don't know what wrote me back. But I submitted. That you submitted. I wish I'd know. I'll text it straight to you now. Yeah. Please. Apparently I was texting Scarlett. I didn't know that. I don't know. But yeah, I love the jokes because I just want to hear the zingers. I love Norm and you know, Quinn and Dennis Miller and all that on there. So that's my highlight. Norm is obviously I think every comedian's favorite of all time. You got a week and update, but we can do it. It's like not even close. He didn't get his love in his time though. I feel like when he was on there, I don't think he got the love. That's that was literally going to be my point. I don't say. Yeah. You know, like if you watch it back. A lot of it's not working. Yeah. It's just he's playing to those to those, you know, people that didn't like the rest of the show. Right. Exactly. So it's kind of it's kind of sweet. Like we could never get away with the silence that he got. If that makes sense. Good point. A lot of the best shit is because of the silence. Like. Yeah. Yeah. What do you think about it shows like Seinfeld or like Simpsons? Like the first season isn't great. Like it's not it's it got great. Simpsons first season. Okay. That's a bad example. But it wasn't like as good as two, three, four. Like it need no, it's not. But I think like it takes a while for a show to like find itself. Totally. Of course. So yeah, I get what you're saying. Yeah. But like I don't know. It's that's a tough gig weekend up there. I feel like Kevin Neal and kind of doesn't get his due. He had some really great stuff. I have a Neal and it's so funny. So fun. So and in person too. Yeah. Not just like he's and so like talented. Like he could. There's a lot of guys that, you know, like I watch that. So now sort of in the periphery growing up. Like it wasn't like my shit. Yeah. And working there. I got to like realize how good those motherfuckers actually are, you know, like all of them. Not just the current cast that was there when I got there, but like just how good Kevin Neal is and how good Seth is. How good are all these motherfuckers are at that shit. And yeah, it's it's kind of crazy. The little heart man. The king. Yeah. But the funny thing of what I've known is that it's all kids who did their homework. It feels like a lot of homework, not you, maybe. But like. You see more like a like you study the night before and still getting a you seem like more one of those. But that's really that's more your vibe. I think like Seth mindset seems like he did his homework does the work. He sits down at a fucking typewriter with a pot of coffee. Those are smart guys. Tina Fey does the work, you know, but Seth was like the fastest writer. I think I'd ever seen really he was he's a guy that's like. He'd have a sketch idea and he'll call you in the office to like write it with them. And he'd he'd get it done in like hour and a half. And it'd be like the best thing in the show. Right. Like something that they write about, you know, like he has shit like that is it's kind of crazy how fast he's just like that too. But it takes it takes a lot longer for Joe's to get it ready. Seth. He'll he'll write it perfect the first time. It's kind of crazy. I went and saw him at the beacon. I got free tickets. And he killed he had great jokes. Yeah, Seth is. He's Chris, but it's just it's just smooth. It's like a smoothness to his standard and like a great like writer room leader. Like a like a guy that could kind of set the table for everybody to be able to pitch and feel comfortable. It's like a really great vibe with him. But you're like that now. So how do you know I'm not that at all? Are you not? I thought we're in the dark here. That's my point. I thought you were one of the headwriters. All right. I'm not I was I was I was I think I fired fired up from being head writer. And the show's never been better. I think it fired. I just stopped doing it because it was just it was just very stressful. I believe it's all in your shoulders. A lot of work. Yeah, it's that's terrifying. 30 rock. You're at the head of the table. Have you ever done like like a like a writing staff job? A couple like for roast award shows. Just stuff like that. Quick in and out. You know, you know, yeah. I feel worthless in that environment though. You're a joke guy. I like writing for myself though. Yeah, I hear that. I guess a couple of times I've like been like, oh, here's, you know, whatever. Here's a joke or whatever. I could I like jokes, but I don't know. You know how you try writing for someone else. It's hard. It's hard. Yeah. SNL is it teaches you because a lot like they like standups a lot because we're great premise people and we're great punch up people. So like even if you don't get a sketch on, you could help somebody with their sketch because you can like, oh, you know, at this tackle work here, you know, you sort of know the music of a joke. Exactly. In a way that a lot of like sketch writers know a scene. Yeah, you guys can keep everybody alive. I wrote for Hannibal on the Bieber roast and he just took all my jokes and Hannibal them. Yeah. That's right. Yeah, it was great. I think I gave my memory to Pete Davidson a bunch and I remember I think I'd have been the same roast and I think the
I had one joke from that was annihilating and then he's like someone else did the same joke Someone else had the same but I wrote it was it was about to leave I forgot what it was Well, we know where that one was. Yeah When I was gonna say about the weekend update is I can't believe people still give backlash one Yeah, I like that you guys could like, uh, you know Shit on people. Yeah, it's gonna be fine. We keep it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. All right good. You know job No, these guys get sensitive sometimes. Oh people get sensitive Yeah, you ever get like a phone call or oh, yeah Byron calling me once byron Alan. I shit on one on a different podcast And he was like I'm gonna sue you and I got that shit deleted But then he said yet for a joke on the phone call Who's getting sued me? Yeah, byron Alan called you the weatherman that sucks. I know. He's like owns NBC basically Yeah, we get us. I'm gonna get a message and like fuck you. That's not how it happened You know like I remember it differently. Yeah. Well, he hated me to begin with We had a tough go on his show. I did the comics unleashed years ago. Yeah, and he and you did this for the photo Yes, that might have set him off a little Well, it's so uncomedy. He's like so I hear you have a dog and I'd go who told you that So I just shut down the whole system. You did that. Yeah, I think that's like every fantasy like I know what love You're gonna get another call now. What are you doing? Oh, yeah, sorry. Sorry. You just said that so uncomedy Wow, I'm gonna piss him off. Sorry, Byron. Yeah big fans. He's killing it now. He's like the king of late night killing it Isn't that crazy and it's great. They're just cutting some budget stuff, you know, cutting budget stuff and I also just think that people just Comedy just like the cheapest thing to produce and they'll oh yeah, they're right. Yeah, I'll roll out any fucking thing But SNL is one of the last things that has like a huge staff and there's like a whole true machine. Yeah, we're yeah Yeah, does it ever worry you that you're like fuck that, you know, this could not be forever No only because Of it's forever nothing's forever first of all so you just so you have to make peace with that part of it and uh Also like I'm enjoying it. So it's like um how many years has it been? I've been there for 13 but I think I've been one update for 10. That's crazy. It is flying by. It's flying by, yeah What's what was the best celebrity sex? That I've seen or that I've been a part. Yeah, I'm with the host. I assume Alec Baldwin or oh man, Betty White was always Broke that hip yeah, you're fucking the brains out I'm gonna call How many times you're like I'm gonna leave. How many like how many times once a year maybe twice a year You always want to leave because you just I don't know something about Being a stand-up at that show you just want to be above it Right, and then at some point you just realize ah you get a live mic once a week Yeah, and you get to tour and do other shit like what are you complaining about man in this fucking climate of comedy and show business And aliens and and AI taking all the fucking jobs, right? You really complaining about, you know totally touch That is the kind of the dream New York gig is we can update. Yeah, yeah for something, you know I like it. I mean it works. I figured out how to make it Benefit my strong suit at first. I didn't know how to do it and then I just started to Realize that they were gonna let me stay so I just started trying to make myself laugh and I just became it. Yeah, then you and the Joest stuff was always gold Yeah, that's fun. That was like a mistake. We backed into that really Yeah, because it started at first we would have these jokes at dress rehearsals we do the show with a full audience at dress rehearsal and We would tell jokes like hard rough jokes and it would get dead silence and it was like Stuff we thought was actually funny, but it was again like that norm shit. Yeah with the audience doesn't fuck with it So one Christmas, Joest was like, hey, you know what about for Christmas? If we give each other a joke That bomb that we really like so that was the start of it So we set it up that way and then the jokes would kill It was like because they feel cool because they're like, oh, you know that we knew it was bad So we offered that contact you know like when you tell a joke, okay, this is gonna this is gonna suck you guys are gonna like this It was that kind of thing so when we started doing that I was like, well, let's do one where we don't know what's coming And then that's how the kind of the joke swap came so when he told me that I was like, oh he's trying to sandbag me and make me say something Fucked up right so I'm gonna make him say something really fucked up. Well, it's a lot easier for the black guy But he wasn't saying he wasn't setting me up. Oh, I was just paranoid So it became joke swap because of that so then he was like, oh now I gotta get him back right and then I just kept being so paranoid That he's gonna go harder and harder and I would overdo it the right and that's how it became as vicious as it is That's great. Yeah. Yeah, have you ever seen this is hard to find but Chris rock and Stephen Wright Trade places on like a night at too many stars or something. Yeah, let's tell each other But Stephen Wright doing rocks materials way funnier though. Unbelievable. I mean that's because it's it's so It's perfect. Yeah, black people in the But yeah, it's a great way to like lower And they did it somewhere it really what it was like the MTV awards or something. There's something more. It's awesome It was like not Stephen Wright's audience also. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think I heard in a documentary one time that like Mel Brooks had to like do Richard Pryor's act because he didn't show up for a gig. Oh, it's hilarious Just like read it off a card. Wow just like the harshest. You ever watch your mom blow a John Yeah, he's doing mud bone Oh, we're delivered to see that Yeah, where can I find that? I found it on Reddit with my thing, but you could probably find it there Peters The Mel Brooks dog was fun. That was a cool. Yeah, I didn't know he did all those serious films I didn't know you did like elephant man. I mean neither. Yeah Without him you might not have David Lynch. It's crazy. Yeah, that's insane He's still alive. That was my shit when I was a kid No Brooks movies was like same. Yeah Space balls history of the world. Oh, yeah blazing saddles. I didn't see till later, but Like those were my two space balls in history of the world And then I saw like everything else has like a little bit more sophisticated. I even loved men and tights as a kid I did too. I'm young Chappelle. Yeah, I'm in and tights and cherry elbows. Yeah, it was fun. Oh yeah, too You don't get those spoofs. I guess you got scary movies like the last bastion Yeah, and too hard with it for a while they it was because scary movie pops and then that's all they made for a while And they made a lot of really shitty ones right right then it just sort of became not even jokes just references exactly And it wasn't as clever. It was really It was a reaction sending up premise. Yeah, it wasn't it wasn't sending up the genre. It was sort of just saying it was just a grab bag of Fucking nostalgia nostalgia and also like you're in the first one you're referencing like the classics Right And then it turns into like the ring too. All right. Yeah In franchises though, it's always hard because you're at some point you just become a parody of the parody Right, you know what I mean. I feel that way sometimes out on the show like I feel like we can update Sometimes is more of a commentary on weakened updates than the actual news that Sometimes you know what I mean like meta yeah, but it but that happens that it just becomes bigger than it's sure It's it's a it's a strange kind of thing. What's the most shit you got for a joke on that show The most shit I ever got probably Caitlyn Jenner stuff really I think that's probably the most yeah, that's probably the most uh Who's mad about is it the trans jokes? Is it the is it hurt jokes? Like what what's the anger coming from I just nobody has theater kids. I don't know who I don't know who's what but they were upset Yeah, it's got to feel weird though because you get older but the crowd stays the same age like Matthew Beccane So you got your you know, we got our sense of humor, which is a little rougher maybe And then the youngsters are getting Queer but you don't want to be that dude who's like we can't evolve, you know I don't want to be the dude who can't evolve but you also don't want to give in to the to the kind of no, it's like the principal skinner thing. It's like it's the kids who are wrong, you know Don't want to be that either. You know be that there's a middle ground. Yeah, we meet halfway I think you just got to stay yourself because they you want people to be able to trust that whatever you're saying You find funny. Yeah, I hate when I see people that like I'm like you don't even think this is good You're just doing it because you think this is keeping you young And that's when it feels disingenuous and you just become What do you say like the camel is a horse built by committee? Oh, I've never heard that before that's good in the Quran. I think I don't know that one. Yeah, I think that's in the Quran Well in yours because what we do we put people in a box good box bad box So like you'll be in the good box for a second and then you'll say retard in your special and I can see people are like Wait, what I thought he was a good guy. I'm like he's still a good guy. He's just saying a word. Yeah, douche Yeah, yeah, but the more you talk the more likely right you're gonna put someone off. Yeah That's why I don't know how you guys do this shit. Yeah, it's he just Realize it doesn't none of it really matters. It feels a lot I grew up with pro wrestling and I do feel like Part of me the inner child didn't me feels like at any moment no matter how bad of a guy you are You can hit a bad guy with a chair and everybody starts cheering for you again like it is You can always turn you can turn heel for a second. Well, you can turn heel. You can do both you can do both You can come back people come back Cosby did both well
I don't think at this point, I can do send all those girls the jeeter box, you know, that's not going to do it. Yeah, the jeeter box, you know, he would bang a jeeter with famously bang a lady and send her like, but he did it consensually, it was of course, of course, yeah, but that Cosby's fuck Cosby's done. There's not coming back from that and Hannibal was the one who did it ironically. I don't think he likes to talk about it. Oh shit. Sorry, Bill Cosby is not on in case you weren't wondering if you can get tickets. He's not on tour right? You know, it's crazy is I saw Bill Cosby's special that never came out and he taped it to San Francisco. I went to the taping. I was doing punchline. Whoa, and how long ago was this? This was it was a Comedy Central special. I remember 17. No, it was Netflix. Oh, it's Netflix. It never came out. It was like a Netflix special. Cosby 77 came out. Yeah, damn 2014. Wow. Robert Townsend directed. Wow. He did it. He did at the San Francisco. Oh, I'm looking at it right now. Children romance and marriage. Yeah, never came out. I got the ticket up to and how was the show? It was raunchy. He was talking like sets for the first time. He was talking about like a lot of stuff. And man, I wish I remembered more of it, but it was like it was sleep. Was it like two hours or it was like it was like 90 minutes. It was like of course like 90 100 minutes. I'm like that. He did like four shows that night. So I saw like the six o'clock. Wow. And then did my set. It was like on a Sunday or something crazy. Good for you for going. Oh, I had to go, but this is before this is before anything came out. Right. So like I think the Hannibal thing happened like that August. If this happened in July, the Hannibal thing happened like August. Wow. That's crazy. So you couldn't talk about the experience. So you couldn't even talk about it. Nobody could talk about it. That's probably the last time he did comedy. Yeah. Because you've had no idea. He had no idea. He was like, boy, this is going to change everything. This next special is the one. This next special is going to change everything back, baby. Wow. And then that was it. I saw him in 2012, maybe. And it was it was a good show. He brought his grandkids on stage, riff with them. It was it was fun. I never saw him live. I went in Jersey. I went in Jersey. That was the first time I first and only time I ever seen him live. Yeah. It is fun. It's how when you're on the road and there's another show in town and you can kind of just. Yeah. I was in St. Louis once in Rock and Chapelle there and I was like, Oh, this is fun. Oh, nice. Did you check them or was it the same time? No, my show was earlier. So I got to go see it and there started like way late. It was perfect. It was great. So yeah, Rock was was working on the the Well Smith stuff. So it's fun. Oh, fun. Working out in Narina. And it was already funny. So it was cool. Who opened? Rock went on first. Damn. No opener though. No Rick Ingram was. He did a great job. It's hard to do what he does in Narina. He was really good. He's a pro. Yeah. It was it was cool, man. Arenas are weird. I think not. But what Rock is one of the ancient power to the few dudes who like nothing changes in Narina for the well, but like, yeah, I guess they've been doing it for that long. Like they're comfortable in that space, but even still I would much rather watch them in a theater. Sure. Of course. No, arenas are not good for comedy, but I rock really impress him because it's like, it's just rock. Yeah. Of course, at the seller, it's different if you see him pop in, but like, there's not many like joke guys, right? In arenas. And Rock sort of he like kind of stalks the stage more for like, he kind of uses the space a lot more. Oh, yeah. For Narina Dave sort of like is such a quieter set. Yeah. Yeah. He'll sit. He'll kind of like meander a little bit. So it's really interesting. You start to hear people yell. Whoa. You know, like even like in a special you could hear like the crowd. You know, it's just like that many people in a and a fucking arena, man. It's just it's just unruly. It really is. Like we've done a few Shane gigs. And it's great because you're like 15 minutes. I'm in. I'm out. And I'll be up there. I'm like, man, I'm killing and I look down. I don't see anyone laughing. You ever seen that? You ever look down the ground like this? You're like, you hear a roar. Yeah, you hear a roar. Yeah. It's just too, it's just too much. It's too much. It's too much. It's too much. Yeah. And you got to rotate because he does the Shane love the round. I hate that shit. It sucks. I mean, it's a real first world problem. Of course. Like that. But, but yeah, no, theater is kind of like the max and it went to over like 2000 seats. It doesn't feel like once you can't see everybody. It's too big. Yeah. And you're on a jumbo tron. It's weird. Yeah. Where did you work out the new hour? Everywhere, man. I did. I did a bunch of a bunch of clubs because I wanted it to have a club pace. Hell yeah. I wanted it to feel like I wanted the jokes to feel fast, you know? And I got a lot of heat on my last special for it being slow. So I wanted this one to feel like a club set. It was punchy. Yeah. I wanted it to be punchy. It was kind of like, by the way, why do you think the last one was slower? Because it was COVID. I was kind of not in the right practice for it. And I wanted it to just feel I think that's just how I felt. I wanted it to be quieter. And I wish I didn't do that. I've done it. I've done the same thing as well. I wish it. Yeah. You really? Yeah. Sometimes you get a little too comfortable. And it's a bad. I think clubs will beat it out of you. Yeah. Because you have to pick up the pace in the club. They're staring at you. Two feet away from you. Yeah. Sometimes you when you get in those big spaces, you think you're doing like cinema. And then lower the lights at this point. Fuck you, dude. You know, make us laugh. So this one was sort of the antithesis that I was like, no, no, no, let's let's let's punch them in the mouth. Ali, do you get to go? Hey, I tried this on update. It didn't fly. I'm putting in my act. Yeah, but not it didn't fly. It's more like there's way more meat on the bone. Yeah. Oh, sure. Have any expound or this will this will work really good to further a bigger point. Right. That's when I'll use like reuse something or or try something again. But never because it's like it doesn't work there. If it doesn't work there, then it's probably not that right. Right. Right. Right. But yeah. Well, I love the Buddha judge joke. Like what is being what is eating a pussy with that was like, that was like, that was like, maybe like within the last five practice runs. Wow. You know what's annoying about that. You only get like a few times to tell it. Because I have a couple of jokes when I just tape and I'm like, oh, I really like that one. I only got to tell it for like two months. Yeah. No, just because like you're doing a new hour. You can turn it over. So it's yeah. How long before your back on stage working out the newer shit? Well, the seller's all new, but if I'm on tour right now, I have to I have to cheat a little bit with some of the older stuff. Yeah, 15 minutes I can do it, but it's an hour. Yeah, I got it. I just went on stage for the first time, like a couple days ago. I was a guest on a ZZ show at the beacon. No, you are running because you're just doing too much now. I didn't I couldn't even fucking think I was. Oh, no, my dick off, but it was nice because it was like, ah, here we are. That'll wake you back to work. My girlfriend would see me after a seller set, like I got very, really funny, dude, Peter Avello buried me in the seller, just throwing 98 and they're good at jokes. And I went up there and I just took a fucking beating. Yeah. And I walk in home, my girlfriend's like, what's wrong? I'm like, just give me like an hour. Yeah. Just let me feel bad for like an hour and I'll be totally cool. That's why I don't like people coming to SNL. Like people that all of us in the green row, I hate it because if the show goes bad, I like to take that time by myself. I don't want to guess. I don't want you to tell me it was actually better than I thought. I don't want any of that shit. I just want to sit in it. Why do people do it? It was good. It was great. Don't deny us our feelings in that moment because we're not idiots. We know. We know. My girlfriend watched me bomb bomb a private event. And she was like, there wasn't that bad. I was like, I know it. You got to a point where she's laughing at the bar because she's uncomfortable. And she's trying to like drum up momentum for me. And they just looked at her like, she's a crazy person. She's like, why are you laughing? But nobody's like, just, I know it's bad. We know it's bad. No, it's bad. And guess what? If we don't think it's bad, we're fucking shit economy. So be glad we know it's bad. Yes. And I'll tell you a good bomb will get you right. Because sometimes hard to muster up low writing. I don't want to. I got it. I got some stuff. I'll be fine. A little self-hated. Yeah. Even not a bomb. Like, just if I didn't get a thing right, or if something didn't go the way I wanted it to go. Right. Anything that went wrong. Like, if it bothers me, like, that's, you need that too. Yeah. And I don't need people to say, oh, nobody even, like, I don't give a fuck. I did. And this is what's going to make me better at this. Exactly. You need that. I just realized you, I mean, SNL people hit me up for tickets every week. I mean, you're, it's like being a Nick. It's a home game every fucking week and you're for tickets. You have to do the post show conference with people. That's stressful. It is. It is. It's why I try not to tape a special in New York. I don't want to. It's same. Don't do it. It's a lot of park. Yeah. Yeah. Same. And it's, it's always like people that you don't want to see people who can't get you on a phone. So just show up to your show. Yes. Like, you know, like, it's a bunch of shit. That's like, you can, you can just don't want to think about it. No, don't want to think about it. You ever get that one where they're like, you get off stage and like, oh, your friends in the green room. Yeah. I mean, Cincinnati. Like, and it's some guy you met and opened Mike 15 years ago. He's like, you'll be $10 or whatever. Yeah. Yeah. Definitely.

I feel like I'll take it. Yeah, you know that people people Yeah, that's true. I think like I think like a lot of comedy fans don't realize that sometimes we we don't want to be bothered 100 percent. Well, you need to hide a little bit sometimes to how do you just how do you get away with it? You just kid you just hide you just yeah, you just don't leave the apartment or you take a walk and you put an audio book on Anything to just fucking you see what you're doing to these guys They don't they don't leave their part I will say this about Shay and a lot of people said this like they're like have you ever met a comic who is funny immediately and you're the only name up That comes up. Oh, no way. I think so dude. I mean I think mark could write jokes immediately But I think it took us a little longer. I think you also started a you were a little older when you started Then you knew who you were more. Yeah, maybe that's don't you think she was yeah, yeah out of the game I mean, you would do we used to go to the pit mic at 11 p.m. On Mondays and you two minutes was two minutes and it was well Cut cut J Welch was the host. He was in a booth and you used to riff with Jay like it was a fucking Ed McMahon He would he had a comfort or he had a comfort out of the game. Yes. I certainly didn't have you didn't have I mean like I Michelle was funny quickly Chris deep funny quickly, but I think Shay like knew who he was That's so interesting to hear because I feel like I it took me so long to get comfortable Oh, you hit it well you fake that yeah, you fake the man. I think it was like a overcompensation Of like trying you know, you're trying to make yourself comfortable because you're not naturally. Oh the cupcake bit crack head Dave Sound you actually sound the same now that you did when you were like Brand you had to open my mouth There aren't a lot of new comics with deliberate pacing who can like kind of know where a lot of the open mic sure like oh That's what the punch line was and with him. I don't think that was that's a good point. I That's a huge compliment. Thank you guys. Well, you had us tricked if you weren't confident because I was like oh this dude's fucking I was not confident at all. I think Jesse was funny quickly. Yeah, there's certain people that were funny quickly But I think chase like I didn't meet like meet you until much like I feel like I knew Mark Relatively quickly. We were drinking we were carol lines a lot. Uh-huh. I think that's around when I mentioned I remember I used to hear about you all the time from recene I think he used to do you used to do the east side. Uh-uh Eastville. No I'm a strip strip used to do the strip more and I never did the strip wanted a real crowd Yeah, it was it was it was I couldn't tweak if I was at open mics all the time and at the strip I could do I could like oh I can tweak this joke more. I can't you know, and oh I got it And I got why you would do it. I called it in I got I didn't pass that the at the strip That was like the one club. I was like no God isn't it funny to look back at like these clubs. It's just like I know they didn't want to develop young guys No, they really didn't they really didn't and and I Won't name any names, but I do feel like there's a lot of club like the way we feel about the sellers because they kind of brought us in There's clubs true, and I feel like a lot of other clubs had that opportunity before the seller brought us in Yeah, and and they're not they're not as around anymore They didn't take care of us and it's like, yo, there's a loyalty to when you can get stage time and be treated like a f*cking professional And and be able to develop and and I feel like no matter how big any of us got We always come back right, you know, and and a lot of those clubs don't have that loyalty But I think I think the seller in the stand kind of the strip never they saw me as as always like a Nothing I think is that right. I don't think I think once they saw me a certain way. They just there was no room for growth Damn, that's no guess. I don't club should be that should help the legendary But that's a lot of clubs are like now than Murphy's handler. Yes. Yeah, but if you hear the stories about that I mean look I I loved going
up there like I was, I grew in there for sure. - That was so jealous you were in there. - You'd come there for the booze. - I'd come with the booze. - Yeah, 'cause you got free drinks and the pot's on her, right? - Yeah, corn. - First comedy club I've been to was the strip. - Yeah. - How old were you? - Probably like 16. - Wow. - Do you remember the lineup? - I remember Kevin Brennan was on. - That's so funny. I saw him in high school to show. - Kevin Brennan had, he had a joke, 'cause I remember the joke was like, they cursed at you and McDonald's, he's like, how you doin' motherfucker or something like that? He was like, can I get a cheeseburger or something? Put some cheese on that motherfucker. - Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, there's shit. Isn't that crazy? You remember that? I was like 30 years ago. - I saw him in high school. I remember Marina Franklin was hosting. I remember Bill Burr and I remember Kevin Brennan were on the show. - I remember that was this one guy that was closing and they was like, ladies and gentlemen, you're gonna remember this guy forever. He's going to be a future legend. I cannot remember who that guy was. It was a white guy with long blonde hair. I do not know who he was and he did not have a good set. It was like, show the link blonde hair and it was like, this guy, he don't friend do it up like that. - I never forget him. - That host created that comic. - Yeah, he must have, look at him. I have no idea who he is. So this day I have no idea who he is. - Carlin, he's on the way. - It was George Carlin, that's right. - He had this bit about stuff and-- (laughter) - Kevin Brennan. - No, but Kevin Brennan I remember. - Yeah. - Kevin Brennan I remember. - Me too, he remember his half hour special. - So early. - He was the last one ever. - Wow. - Yeah. Funny, Neil Brennan was getting shit online one day and I was like, hey man, you all right? And he goes, my brother's Kevin Brennan. (laughter) I got a hand on this and I was like, oh, good point. - Oh yeah, that old ray of sunshine. (laughter) - Yeah, the club. You just want to go back and go, hey, strip. How do you like me now? - No, but you know, you're also grateful. But it stays with you. I read an interview with Chris Rock once and it was like, he basically just said something like, well, he thought this guy, Lucien, the comic strip booker who I guess never really showed him respect or whatever, said something like, he passed away and he rocks to something like, well, he thought this guy was funnier than me. I was like, it never goes away. - No, no. - It never goes away. - Oh, we are such petty bits. - Oh, completely. - I've never been upset about not getting something. I always internalized it more than, why not me? I remember I didn't get new faces and I had, but I didn't have a good set to audition. When I audition, I never felt like, oh, I killed it. - But you got shit quickly. - I got shit quickly, but when I didn't get shit, it didn't feel like my ego wasn't like, I should be getting this. It was more like, yeah. Gotta get better. - Yeah. Oh, I just didn't, you know, just didn't work out, you know? I didn't get the strip, and I was just like, yeah. Well, you know, whatever. - Well, you started after us, and I remember being like, all right, I got to stay above J here at this guy. It's still younger than me. And then you got, we got the John Oliver thing, say no. And then you got the seller quick. And I was like, damn. - I remember he had a letterman set. And I remember he was like, oh, that was like one of the last, that was cool just to be on letterman as a stand. - I got the cup still. - Really? - I got a letterman. The thing is mugs. I like a mug from every show. - Chair. - I got Alan and I got a letterman. Those are my fries. - Those are my fries. - Possessions right here. - Yeah, yeah. - And I got to do that mug in an intern. - So it's worth extra. (laughing) - Yeah, that's good. - You know, I always want to do a letterman. I luckily got to do that. - Yeah, that's the one. I got that blue one. - I got to do the Netflix one, but I never, I always wanted to CBS him. I just want Lawrence, and thank God they brought him back on Netflix 'cause I was, he was the one dude. - Yeah, cool. - Letterman and Conan. - I never get one again unless they have 25 dollars. (laughing) - It is a class logo. - You and that suit was wild to suit. - Oh, it looked like a Mormon. - I look so stupid. I look like the one black guy to Mormon's convert. (laughing) The one black guy to answer this door. - Look at that. Look at that, look at that. - Oh my gosh, 60 pounds. - It looks so bad. - It looks so bad. - It looks pretty good. - I look pretty good. - Chrissy D looked rough in the suit. He was wearing like a double XL. - It wasn't even a suit. That's literally jeans under there. - Oh, Jordans. - Yeah, I would, I would a full sign film. (laughing) - Nah, Nike Shots. - Not a full sign film. - Yeah. - Well, I was pretty signed. (laughing) - Damn, dude. - Yeah, man. - Wow. - And you did Daily Show. I mean, you had an insane ascend. Was Daily Show was right after this? - No, that's the no's right after that. I think Daily Show was maybe like a year or two later. - Oh, and we did our half-hours together. - We did our half-hours together in Boston? - Yeah. - Yeah, we did. - I love you up. Damn, man, this is like watching your own funeral. (laughing) - What was the one where you was like, I'm a professional comedian? - For me, it was that first Conan with the tie-dab. It went well. I was like, I'm in, I'm on TV, and it went well. - Nice. - Signed my check. - Nice. - Yeah, what was yours? - The older one, right? - First, I think was, I think Letterman was the one that felt like, oh shit, that was the one. - Yeah. - Was I, because you got, it was during Sandy. - Oh, I know. - It was literally during Sandy. So I didn't, they didn't call me or nothing. They, my buddy, I didn't have a phone. So my buddy had to like come to my apartment in Jersey City, knock on my window and be like, hey, they want you to do Letterman tomorrow. - Whoa! - So I had to like, no phone. - I had no phone. So I had to, and I couldn't charge my phone 'cause there was no power. - Right. - So I had to go from Jersey City to whole-boken to a hotel. Like some motel thing, just so I could be near a phone and take a shower. - Wow. - Then we drove into the city, like that next day, and taped it so I didn't have time like, rehearse or nothing like that. - Holy shit. - You didn't know what to do. 'Cause I just saw addition like that Sunday. - Yeah. - And then was locked in since like that Tuesday or whatever. - That's crazy. - And then had to do it that like Thursday or Friday. - Between when you auditioned and did the set, like, people died, lost their whole life. - Yeah. - It was fucking crazy. - Crazy. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. So that was like, that was like really stressful. - That was crazy. - I had those subways. - Oh shit. - And I bought that, and I bought that soup jacket and shirt from H&M, like down the block. - Wow. - What's good? - I remember we went to sex, and I was like, I'm going on TV, and I need to look good. She got me this Gucci suit. It was like $3,000, and I was like, I'm gonna come back. - Yeah. - Look at me. I'll be right back. - I'm gonna show hold it. - Promise you'll hold that. - Promise me. And I'll wish great day to never more like a $50 blazer. I thought I was on TV, but you know, whatever. - Damn. - Yeah, that's a great Mindy Tucker shot. You look at that. - Oh, that's a clever one. - That was my head shot for a long time. That's a great one. I think Second Avenue, remember that. - Oh, yeah, was that Cabin? - Not Cabin. I think it was the other one. The Carol, um. - Oh, three of cups. No. - The name. - Three of us. - Marcel. - Go, Carol Hartzel. - Yeah, her fucking show was on like, like Second Avenue or was it maybe Avenue way? I can't remember. - Oh, yeah. Was that Ella Lound or something like that? - Yeah, it was something like that. - Yeah, yeah. - Marcel, yeah. Damn, I'm sorry. She's the one that got me my first of Montreal audition. - Oh, nice. - Yeah. - Who'd you go with? - I didn't do good. I'd never go. - You never go. - He went to here. We were new faces, but that's like a gal. - Oh. - Yeah, I got the galo before a good new faces. I still remember Jimmy Carr going up to Damien Lemon and going Michael Chea, I'm a huge fan. - I was there. - Yeah. - That was brutal. - No, I don't know about that. - Oh, yeah. - He went to Damien Lemon was like, amazing set. You killed it and he was like, - No, I'm lemon. - And lemon was just like, yeah, that wasn't, I wasn't on that show. - Yeah. - And then I watched him. Well, I'd love to see you sometime. - Yeah. - I'd love to. - Tell me where you're performing. - It was a harmless mistake, but it was, he was. - That's a close one though. There was something that I was like, I can't understand how. Like, people were confused me and Jayne Farrow and I'd be like, - Ah-ha. - That's a lot closer than me and Jayne Farrow. - He had the hat on. - Yeah. - Yeah. - Damien was funny. - Damien won my favorite game. - Oh my god. - Remember Damien's joke? I had the type of dad that would leave the family but stay in the neighborhood. - Yeah. - That's a great bit. - Great bit. - No, yeah, Damien's the man. I love him. - Yeah, very funny. - And he was one of the first people I knew too from from Stan. I would see him all over. - Oh, yeah. He got me in a laugh lounge. - Remember Laughin's in the Lower East Side? - The Lower East Side. - Damien of Lad. - Oh shit. - Yeah. - I remember that everyone was great. - Yeah, when it was good, it was good. - When it was packed, it was great. - But they had that clunky door that would go, (mimicking) If you were bombing, you heard the door opening close. It was pretty-- - Yeah, I heard it when you know it. It's not going good. - Yeah, sounds are really like if you're a blender. - Oh. - Or this shit, that's always a nightmare. - When I was doing the beacon show bombing, - Yeah. - I heard a siren. (laughing) - Oh, that's it. - You know what I'm supposed to hear that? - You know, street. - I could hear the street. (laughing) - I heard the lights change. - I heard the lights change. - Like clank clank clank. (laughing) - Oh, did you hear that? - Did you hear that? - Was it just, you know what, when you just don't know what your jokes are even gonna be? - Yeah. - You just don't know where to transition to. So it's a lot of like long pauses and a five second pause in the comedy show when you're, when you're out of shape feels like an eternity. - 100%. - So it was just, - Even if the jokes are good if the transitions aren't seamless, they're like, - Yeah. - What are you doing? - It can tell you're not in control. - And Ricky just killed. - Ah. - Ricky was less just killed. So, and Maddie just killed. So I was just like me following really good addition to comedians. And then I'm like, - Hey. - My people. (laughing) - Well, you know, people leaving the theater like Michael Chase slipin' do. - They love to rank it. - Yeah. - Yeah, they're like it.
- So that's in your head when you leave this. - Right. - It's, yes, 3,000 New Yorkers. You know they're like, what the fuck was that? - And the worst is when you walk from a bomb back to a group of cut. It feels like when you bowl a gutter and you have to go back to the little section there with the seats. - Yeah, it's like the dumb answer on Family Feud. (laughing) - Okay, good. (laughing) - I'm sure it wasn't good, I was stupid. (laughing) - Yeah, I misheard the question. - Yeah. - No, it was brutal. But it's, to me, it's like it's when I felt comfortable doing comedy in the sense of if that's the worst that could happen, then it's all good. - Right, you know, like if that's the worst, if that's the worst feeling you can have, and it sucks, I could try. - Yeah, right. - I could swing the bat. - And it's how you respond to it. Like you, as Mark was saying earlier, it's like, I fuck I got it right now. - Oh, I went immediately to the cellar. - Whoa. - Immediately, I went, like literally from the stage into a car to the cellar to do two spots. I was like, I have to get to where there's that at. They were way better. - All right, they got the rust off. - Not off, but I got the stink off. - Yeah, yeah. - And the stink off. - Sometimes as the opposite. I open a schumer at Carnegie Hall. I had the set of my life, SD was there. People were throwing panties and roses at me. And I went to the cellar and we were, there was an after party. She was like, are you retarded? - Yeah. - I know, we're drinking, we're celebrating Carnegie Hall. And I was like, I got to get one more in and I ate my balls up there. - That's the worst. - That's the worst. - It's like literally like staying too long at a crap table. - Yes, yes. - Why did I do that? I was just up. - Snake eyes. - Why did I do that? - I know. - Carnegie Hall too is like the fucking sound is brewing. - I've only done, I've never done like a proper set there. I've only done like a- - It's not good sound. - It's not, it didn't feel good. And it's not good light either. - It's like way too bright to me. At least what I do. - I've only done like a bit. - It's legendary, but it's just not, the beacon is iconic. - It's like town hall, you feel like he can murder. - Yeah. - The Carnegie Hall is built for music. - Yeah. - It's not whole. - Yeah, for Jimmy Carr there. Front row, Louis CK. - No shit. - I was like, what are you doing? I can see your fucking bald head, your ginger bitch. - Radio City, I don't love you. - I've only done that one. I heard it's a- - Cavernous. - Very cavernous, yeah. Even like less, the garden is somehow more intimate. - Radio City, I think. - Yeah, I get that. - It's crazy. - Yeah, I saw Mulaney's special there. I remember being like, oh, I can't believe he's taping here. - Radio City? - Yeah. - Oh wow. - 'Cause it's iconic and he's got that old timey, like- - That's true. - He looks like Radio City. - Yeah. - Right, right. - But he's got that kind of sentimental thing about like, 'cause you see, did that thing in January, we're just doing every iconic. - Oh, cool, is that? - It's just, yeah. - I feel the seller, Joe's pub. What's the jazz club? The one on third. - The blue note. - Blue note, then he- - You do everything. - Carnegie, the garden. It's a crazy run. - That's really cool. - There, in Bounders Ballroom. - Peter Beacon. - Carnegie Radio City and MSG. - He's gonna sell it all out. - That's really fly. - When you picked this venue in Minnesota, was it a place you had been and you're like, oh, I gotta come back here? - I never played, I never played the first avenue before, but I had seen it before. And when we were looking at, I wanted something sorted in that sweet spot, like a thousand seats. - Yeah. - Around there, maybe 1,500, maybe 800, whatever it was. So the venues we was looking at, they were like nice and they had that, you know, that's that spit shine on and they were very pretty and they all look good. But something about first app, it just felt really Minnesota. It felt like iconic to that. Like doing the Apollo or something. It just felt like a specific aesthetic. So, you know, it felt worn in. So, when we seen it, it was like, okay, this is gonna be fun. - I like the standing. Some about people standing in a special place, it's fun. - It just reminded me of those sort of, like those nidden factory nights. - Yes, you know, house nights. You know, like where it's just people standing or hovering around, like you can't fit another motherfucker in here. - Right, right. - Like I wanted that vibe. I wanted it to be like, those packed shows that we started that felt like, I don't know. 'Cause these theaters really got the chandelier, the big record. - Yeah. - It's still a little stuffy. - It's still stuffy and a lot of specials. Like one of my pet peeves. One of my pet peeves in watching specials is like, like sometimes in the shot, the audience isn't included. So, you can't tell if that's a real laugh or a can laugh. - Sure. - Because it's sort of just shot in a vacuum. You could have piped that in or-- - Right. - So, I wanted everything that you could kind of see the audience, especially for the subject matter I was doing. You have to see that people are having a good time and it doesn't look like I'm cheating. - Good point. - So, that was something that I directed it. So, that was something that I really wanted to make sure. - Well, you did the other one. I think when you did Michael Chey matters, was it, was that the one in the-- - That was the-- - It was the same thing. That was in a green point. It was like an empty warehouse. - Well, you did to that-- - I went there because I was looking for venues. - Oh yeah? - And I was like, wait, how the fuck did he do that with this? I don't remember going in there being like, what? - Really. - 'Cause you dress it up so much. - Yeah, yeah. It looked completely different. - Yeah. - Yeah, yeah. It was completely raw. - Whoa. - Yeah, that was, I didn't direct that. So, that was Oz Rodriguez. He was directed at us and not at the time. He did a lot of pre-tapes and all of that. And yeah, he knew what he was doing. That should look incredible. People still ask, where did you shoot that? It doesn't exist. - Yeah. - Literally, it's like that party George Costanza went to just like telling he was here. It was like it wasn't there. - Yeah. - Damn. - Wow. - But this one, yeah, all of that, we kind of, we left a set list up like we didn't dress it. - Yeah. - We just lifted the curtain, like that's what it looks like. And then we just put a lip down on the stage because the only thing is since it's a music venue and since it's a standing room, the stage is so high. - Ah, it's no good. - It's no good. So, we kind of brought down a little, you know, a little stage so that it could be in the middle of the people. - Beautiful. - It was cool though. - Now, I got no fight with a guy because he said your title is a George Floyd reference. I thought it was like a double on time and I'd say, well, actually, he was not sh-- you know, that was a different-- - It was a whole lot of the same. - Yeah, so is that, what do you think? - I think it's what you wanted to be, it's art. - All right, so I think I was right there. - I don't want to ruin it for anybody. - Okay. - Yeah, well, it is what it is, but it was shining Minnesota, and that's all I'll say about that. - All right. He owes me money. - Yeah, get your money, brother. You know, I'm team you. You know, would you guys have a direct role, shit? - I did, I did my last. - You did your direct role? - Yeah. - Is that, like, stressful at all for you? - No, I, dude, less is more. - You get a deep breath. - B, you don't really go-- - That's what I did. - We had a great one and it's just like, comedy special is less is more. It's like, you know what I'm saying, too, about these, like, grand theaters you're in, where you're like, yeah, there we go. That was my idea that set, but-- - Love it in the blue. - Yeah, dude, at the pop a little bit. And Tampa had to, you know, a little bit of trashy elegance thing. - Yeah, a little strip club owner. - But, you know, when there's like a chandelier in there, you're like, they always hear a story like, "Who Dini Levitated?" (laughing) And you're just like, all right, why am I gonna do the Dixuck Chunk right after you? - You feel a little gross, you're like, let's trash it up a little bit, 'cause this is like an unpretentious form of entertainment. - Right, it is, it's supposed to be, but also, I do think that we live in a world where it's almost so humorless that it's become a delicacy, you know? - Totally, totally. - Comedy is like, it's like, ox tails. It's like, it's supposed to be trash, but we've made it so good. - Yeah, it's like a lobster. - We've made it look so good. Yeah, like a lobster. - Jamaican food is like my- - Oh, like my- - You know, like it's supposed to be the worst thing, we just know how to do it, you know what I mean? - Yeah. - You just know how to make it. And now it's a delicacy. - Yeah, that's why we used to live on an oyster, but it's still a fucking, it's still in a shell. - Yeah, it's still a bug. - Yeah, when you have that fucking blender in the room, it's such a reminder that you ain't shit. - Exactly. - You're just like, all right. - Also, you go to these venues and they're like, Harry Houdini was here, 100 years ago, last week with Stormy Daniels. - Yes. (laughing) - All right, this is still a pretty low-brow shit, we're doing here. - Yeah, Stormy Daniels. - She's catching strays like every week on this podcast. - Well, she's like, all over my calendar, it's Stormy Daniels before me. It's her than me. - Have you seen her work? - I have not, I've seen her online. - How does that work doesn't seem like the kind of work that I would be looking for in the lonely night? - Oh, really? - No, she's, no. - Too aggressive? - No, it looks like it's probably like that cinamax porn. - Oh, yeah, she's got a little of that. - It's like, soft core. - Yeah, that's what I'm guessing. I don't know, from the titles, it's not like, you know, remember when you'd go to the video store, you'd look at the cases? - Mm-hmm. - That wouldn't be the one I picked up. - Interesting. 'Cause I did the research when she was in the news, you know? I did some watching. And she was a real pro. - Oh, yeah. - Oh, yeah. - It's an expensive ticket. - 50 to 75 at the company zone. - Wow. - That's pricey. - Yeah, she's cleaning up, man. Everybody wants to hear what's it like bangin' Trump? - Hey, man. - That's a good credit. - 78 bucks in Greensville, South Carolina is, that's a pricey ticket. - That's pricey as well. - Yeah. - Yeah. - That was just there. - Is Trump trashed you publicly? - Trump kind of leaves me alone. - Mm-hmm. - That's kind of disappointing. - Yeah. - No, it's not disappointing. I like it. I think he likes it if it's good. (laughs) - That's what I tell myself. If it's a good joke, he'll just respect the game. (laughs) - Were you there when I sleep at night? - Were you there when he hosted? - Yeah, I was there. - What, what year was it? - That was. I want to.
I wanna say, well, it was before he had a shot. So I'm gonna say 15. - Okay. - 'Cause it was still like such a long shot before he, well, I'm right. It was like, it was like 15. What were the vibes? Why are we having this motherfucker on here? - Yeah. - It amongst the cast. And this is weird. - Right. - But it was a New York icon and like a movie star kind of. - Yeah. - TV star. - TV star, home alone, I guess. - Yeah, I wouldn't say movie star. - All right, all right. - He was a movie star. - Yeah, the apprentice. There you go. He was a host. - He was a TV star for sure. He's still a TV star. - Right. - But yeah, I remember it being strange. It was strange. - Yeah. - I was sharing an office with Tim Robinson and Zach Cannon and the guys I do I think you should leave. And I remember as a bit, I had a Trump hat like in the office, you know, just kind of like this, like just like Chachke's and just like ridiculous things. And he was like, dude, when he comes in here, you have to take that fucking hat down. I do not want him thinking that we fuck with this guy. - Wow. - I was like, good call. But you know, 'cause like you don't know, like he might be like, oh, they fucking love me. - Sure. - We did and it was like an ironic thing. - Yeah, man. - And yeah, so I remember people not fucking way to it. But you know, to me, it's like, I always feel like Esadal is just sort of a magazine of what the country is. And that was the moment, you know? - Yeah. - Whether you like 'em or not, it's, you can look at that episode and know what year it was. - Yeah. - What time it was, you know? And I think stuff like that is interesting. - I agree. - I watch a lot of like old videos with like Dick Cavitt and he's interviewing all these crazy counterculture people. - Yeah. - You know, like those are great interviews. - They're great. - They're original fucks. - So it's like, I think there's some of that in this, you know? - Yeah, I'm with you. - I just read that Aurea manual book and there's a part of the book where he calls Trump after he won. And Trump first thing he goes, he answers the phone immediately. Right after he won the election and goes, am I your biggest client yet? - What? - And that's the first thing he said. And he goes, nope, 'cause we have to fire. He was like happy at the fire and he was like, can't make money after you're Mr. President. And he goes, and I didn't vote for you. And he hung up. - Yeah. - That's crazy. I remember before the table read, he got on the phone. He was like, hello, okay, mm-hmm. All right. My book's number one. (laughing) - Like the most insane shit. Yeah, like different vibes than when Bronson hosted. That must have been fun. - What was that like? - I wasn't there for the table read. I didn't get there till that Thursday. So, I missed the Wednesday table read. So, I don't know what it was like. - Damn, I heard he did a bit about a horse. (laughing) He said horse. (laughing) When you put the caption, make sure it says horse. - They're playing horse. That's what you say, right? - Sorry, yeah. Good call. - You're good at that. You can slip one in. - Hey, thanks. - Cosby too. (laughing) - I would just love to meet the guys. It's just so cool. - He's awesome. - I did get to meet him during the parade. - Whoa! - We were, well, I don't even think that's when I met him, but we hung out like at the parade. We went to a bar and it was just like him and some of his friends and a few of the players. It was just like a weird fucking, I won't say where, but it was a bar where if anybody knew he was in there, there would have been fucking stormed. - Sure. - It was the night of the parade, but no one knew, and we just listened. - Did he have a drink? - I don't know if I could say that. - Oh, well, I hope he had one. He just served in here. - He deserves a bar. I wasn't smelling cups. (laughing) I don't know what the fuck was in there, but he was having a good time, man. - The special thing. - They all looked like they were just like, literally cloud nine. - I feel like I blew, I did their pod and I feel like I really blew it with them because it was like early in the year last year and they were coming off a three game losing streak and they weren't a bad mood, like why are we doing this podcast? And I kept saying, can we reschedule to the people? And it was just, you know, it's like, when you're just ponding people and they're like, we don't wanna fucking be here. - Yeah, it's like your pod. - I know, but I felt like I did not. - That was your Aziz show. - Yeah. - You felt like it detected. - Yeah. - But did they seem like that with you? - No, they were nice guys then, but also, I didn't know it's like a family show, so all my good lines got. I remember at one point, they were talking about like Josh Giddy, like, "Oh, I got he owns." I was like, "Yeah, he's got your number." And I could think of another number he should have gotten. And Brunson like hit one of these, but of course, the good lines don't make it. - Of course, of course. - 'Cause it's like. But I got, I got him a break a couple of times. But boy, that's got a suck having a name like Giddy. (laughing) - So close. - Yeah. - So close. That's so many. - It's like Roma. - Yeah, literally. - Wait a minute, I don't know. (laughing) - Almost signed up for something. - I don't know what you talking about. - Be Giddy. (laughing) - Damn, that's hilarious. - No, but that was that monologue with Brunson was really fun, dude, I thought the OG cameo kill me too. - I think that's, I think Joe's did that. - I think my favorite part was Joe's line. - Joe's got so much shit that people give Joe's shit a lot and I love them for that. He deserves all the shit that he gets. But he's written somebody like, if you put a list of the top 100 SNL moments in the past 20 years, Joe's probably has about 40% of them. - Wow. - Like he's crazy prolific at that show. - Do you, do you have the bid in the special about bringing women to their shirts to that? - They're just truth to him inviting me out, but there's no truth to me ever going to their house. - You don't wanna bring a girl to double up that? - Oh no. - Yeah, that's a lot of pressure. - It's a lot. - That's crazy. - You're putting her through it on me. - I'm a let a girl. I swear, she was really pretty and cool, but her name was Scarlett. - Oh, I cannot date poor Scarlett. (laughing) - Sorry. - That's impossible. - You got the stunt double. - It's never working. (laughing) - I got other Scarlett. - My mom's name is Marilyn. I met a Marilyn like, I can't do it. I can't. It's just a certain name. You like, no, off limits. I'm sorry. - Damn, yeah, my mom's name is Liz. So when Liz at the seller was like, you fucking asshole, I'm like, this is about right? (laughing) - And hot. (laughing) - Yeah. - Well you guys, you guys must like double. - No, you know, I'm buried with a kid now. - Yeah, you don't double date? - No. - No, we haven't. - I feel like that's when you would do it. - I'd rather just hang out with him. - I don't think I was my wife and kid and his girlfriend. - Yeah, but we could do a date night. - We could bang out a date. - But doesn't that, that's true. - I'm not in a relationship like that. So like, doesn't it sort of earn you more free time when you're like, hey, I'm gonna bring, let's bring the girls this time. And then when I tell them I'm gonna watch the game, they'll let us. - I guess, but it would just be me and him going out. You see that new rock stop I had a bit about it. We'd just be huddled over here. And then it would be you. - But we think we do that anyway. - Yeah, it's true. - Mark will have a thing at his place sometimes and it's just us corner in the corner. - Right, that's true. - Do you feel that pressure at all to meet someone or now? - No. - That's good. - Don't do it. - 'Cause God's sad. (laughing) - Come in, but it's all up that shit. - I gotta say that, like, it makes me, it makes me seem more like mysterious. Ask me that question again. - Hey, do you want love in your life, Mike? - Love. - I don't know the meaning of the word. (laughing) - We gotta do a smash cut of this as a teaser and we'll do, like, date line. - Sappy music. - But let's be, like, Michael Schaeb shares all. - Date line. Chris Hansen comes up. - I mean, fuck. - I didn't mean date line. What the fuck did I mean? - Hell, was that Scarlett? - Holy shit. Why the fuck, what did the show, was I mean? - Yeah, that's 60 minutes. - 60 minutes. - Oh my God. Why does it get named? - Why'd you start the trailer for that movie? I'm a fucking idiot. - Oh, yeah, to catch a person. - Date line. Jesus. - Fuck, I'm sorry. I didn't mean accidentally call you a peto. What the fuck is wrong with me? (laughing) - This has been a great press week for me. (laughing) - At least we didn't ask about Shane. That's something. - That really touched you. - Appreciate it. - Thank you. - Thank you so much for that. - She's pushing it and it's like, you answered it pervert. It's like, shut up. - I know, leave me alone. - I don't know what these guys are talking about. I'm going deaf again. (laughing) - Well, you got to, like, we now have to answer on behalf of comedy. - I know. Get outta here. - Crazy. - I saw the joke a week before killing the VU. Boom. That's all you need to say. - Yeah. - If you, if I, if you want to dessert at Island and I showed you the Shane set and I said, hey, what's the problematic part of this that everybody's going nuts on? - It's face. - Yeah, I bet you wouldn't find it. That's what you know. It's face. (laughing) - No. - I love shit. I think it's a, I, you know, I don't usually watch the whole episode but I'll watch the sketches online and I thought what I see is always fun and great. - I have no comment but I will say that it is funny that this is the first time I could honestly say that I got in trouble for saying nothing. - Yeah. - It's, it's usually hyperbole but it's true. - Well, you got the good move with the black squares and the, the swiping. That's a great little out. No, no, we all do this, but I'm so sorry. I wanna apologize if I offended. You got the three lines and you're done. - Yeah, that's 'cause I don't have, I don't really have a care.
But it's also I can't find my angle on my own. I need a real art. It's a motionless too, which I kind of like it's smart It's just like this is it cut and dry I was yeah, whatever. I want to do that with the divorce. I'm sorry No, I'm just joking But I'm just saying we bank these in advance. Do you probably will think about divorce? Yeah, yeah, of course I mean, it's it's an option. That's a fun thing to think about well, you know everything's an option you have to think about of Of course, I think about banging a guy it's an option. It's an option But you're good. All right. Yeah, I'm good. I'm good. I'm both I don't want to get divorced. I don't want to bang a guy. You sure If I do I'll do both at one day that was kind of unprompted I'm trying to throw out other crazy scenarios. Are you dating anyone? Oh I mean, I can't say I want to respect her privacy. All right. That's good. That's fair I want to You're a busy guy, man. It's tough. I'm not a busy guy. That job is demanding. I'm not a busy guy What is the schedule? I mean you go in twice a week every day What for us and now oh, you're in six days a week. Oh damn. That's tough to do in a relationship totally and night It's a week but but like twenty three weeks a year. Okay, so you get summers you get holiday breaks That's good off weeks It's the thing is though the off weeks. You're usually so stressed that it almost takes like a week to just sort of Decompress from everything that she was already doing right working on the show So it's hard to like do comedy right after an SNL week because you're just like I don't want to even What do you stay at home or do you just get in the plane and go some usually I'm like doing all of the shit that I missed out on during the week typically Now that I don't I don't go in as much because I don't write as much so I haven't been that beat up. Yeah, which was why I was able to do the special because I was the hardest part about doing a special I could have shot the special maybe two or three years ago But it's so hard to get that real estate. Yeah of I'm a conditioned touring comic right now And I've worked this shit out and you know, you know how it is when you're getting ready for something Yeah, so you know doing the two and three weeks at a time You're always like oh, this isn't this isn't tight enough right? You don't feel like you're in shape and as soon as you get in shape You're back at the show and then you're trying to play catch up the whole time good point. So now it's literally just you know Getting back in shape. Yeah Stage time in that momentum. You need that momentum. You need that like I can do whatever I want There's like a there's like a bulletproof moment you get about two or three months in on a road where you're like I can try anything Yes, it might not work, but I know that I'm good I know that I can do this and they've seen a professional. Yeah, I've got the foundation. You got the foundation You can throw some shit at it for sure It's like fighting a woman. You're like I got You know what I mean? You know you know when you're new with a bar fight with a guy like just go either way, but if it's a lady like all right This is whatever I want Yeah I was like I finally got to an interview without need bullshit Winning the craft you know it's kind of like a hit in a woman But I'm fine. Well, I just said I need an analogy. I was trying to help you guys Guys were meandering You going on the road again or you want to plug anything what not now? I'm gonna wait till this kind of battles fighting a woman tour Punching down he calls it I Hate that I hate that for another I hate that to know I am pet peeve of mine. Yeah The pet peeve thing. I don't people just we just started complaining a lot and it caught on okay cool That is another pet peeve of mine is punching down or up It is jokes relax. It's a lead us. I'm not punching anybody. Right. It's punch line. It usually comes from a person of privilege And that's where I'm kind of like shut the fuck you used to have a great bit about this. You're offended on behalf They're a letterman. Mm-hmm. That was it took that was a really good bit back in the day. I mean It was how old did my sixty-six years That was an older baby. It's not it isn't her came Sandy baby. Even the impromise thought we've had So many more natural disasters I know Saddle it is Yeah, no, but it is it is sort of there is sort of a tinge of privilege in those sentiments of punching down and who who you're allowed to make fun of and not and you know like I know I had a big bit about a culture appropriation about I put a sombrero on me at a restaurant at a Mexican restaurant I don't take a photo for my birthday, so I posted it and I got a million fuck you Appropriation every Mexican guy wrote you look great Keep wearing it. Fuck them. I'm Mexican. Go for it. I was gonna say how do you know they were Mexican? We're just doing it once over. I checked with ice God damn it. He's fast. Yeah, the fastest gun in New York speedy Gonzalez I got a pee for you my girlfriend does this shit. I buy like the case is a spindrift seltzer Yeah, she takes like two sips pops a can and just leaves. Oh, that's no good I hate it's just feeling the weighted That's no good. So it just infuriates me. I'm feeling with rage. I do that. When you bought it at least. Yeah, yeah, I bought it But I do that. It doesn't know you though. I do it too much. I might think it's mine. I finished a seltzer You've made a whole seltzer. I love a seltzer too. I only buy a seltzer. Yeah, but usually I finish him I've I've been I sometimes just want sometimes I just want to sip to break the food in my mouth I don't know why like it just cleanses the pal and sometimes I don't need a whole can. I love that spindrift Dude, I don't like spindrift stone. No flavor. I like the like a flatter one. I like a I like just regular. What's this shit? Paul's oh Nick's and I X i E I get it. I get a whole special shit. I don't ever heard of this. No, that's the best ones. Yeah Yeah, yeah, I've never tried this. I kind of like soda They're no sugar. No, it's it's nothing, but they're clear too. So it's not like too much. It's not okay The strawberry herbiscuit black cherry. Oh, that sounds good. Those are great. We got a wreck. Yeah. Yeah, those are trying it Yeah, that's a free ad for you guys. All right. Yeah, Nixie. How about me? This is a New York thing this so I didn't grow up with Seltzer. We put cells in a drink and that was it. No one drink is a very New York. I think it is I think it's like like I think of like teachers. Oh, it's like a very New York City teacher. Even like egg cream has Seltzer in it and shit. Yeah, I didn't I never got in never had a Never got in. Oh, okay. That's a New York thing. I think so. It's like vanilla soda. I don't know. Yeah, not a fan Yeah, I never they always said it was a Jewish thing, but I never tried. Oh, okay. I had like one in my life. Well, they're all the delis. Yeah, you're Jewish No, no I'm cooperating. I'm transitioning. You posted a picture in eomica and the juice that it was okay Did it have Jewish people in Louisiana? Yeah, we got a little sect. We keep an eye on them You get that a lot and you get all the time. Oh my God. I get Jewish hate. If you're like look at this fucking He better go back to Israel pussy and I'm like Definitely don't seem as Rayleigh. I know. You seem like a New York zoom. That's true. That's true Yeah, I get it all the time annoying. I'm a comedian, you know, all the bit cheap Well, you're a chief. Yeah. Yeah, I'm frugal really all spend money on other people, but I'm out of me Yeah, you don't spend that surprises me really. Thank you. I would I would imagine that you like to splurge No, I'm like I bought a car. I'll buy stuff, but it's I'm not I'm not splurged like a classic car. It is a beamer. Yeah, old beamer What's a crazy Michael Chase splurge? I don't really splurge too much. I buy a lot of sneakers But that's just because I like new sneakers like it reminds me of childhood Just having fresh sneakers. You feel like you could run faster and it's just a confidence boost having Something fresh on your feet, right, but other than that. Yeah, I don't know how to drive so I don't care about cars That is a fly. We are both in New York. Oh man. I can't drive either. You can't drive either I'm a licensed, but I'm shit. I don't I don't know how to drive. Yeah, it's like I would love to teach you guys how to drive Really? That would be a great show like I can do stick shift. We can drink whatever you want I don't think we should drink. Okay Well, look at that. I think that's smart I want to hit his wife and drive from Really all-around man And it's a good character the guy you take who you said and just makes it terrible. Hey, it's like hitting your wife That's not what I was saying Round tail lights are really fun, but yeah, that's that's that's beautiful Is that like a whole BMW? 1973. I was gonna say early 80s. Oh damn 70s. Yeah That must have been sexiest fucking to 70 this car save BMW nothing like the other 70s cars exactly This is right German. They were the beamer was tanking and they put this out and it blew up. No shit Yeah, it's a fun fun model So like when you get something like that Service that's like impossible. I have a guy. I have a guy in Jersey. I have to bring it to okay Driving yeah driving it there's BMWs are already hard to service exactly and you've got one from the 70s Which is like you need like a fucking time machine. Oh, yeah They don't even make those wrenches that are more right. So it's just like a like a side-failed wreck where he's
I was like, "Hey," he does love the car. When I bought it, he gave me a quick call when I posted it. - Really? - Yeah, he was like, "That's a great car, great choice." I was like, "I did it for you." (laughing) I feel like Fellas died of the okay. (laughing) - You suck. (laughing) - That's kind of cool though. What sign fell, you're a guy? - It was rock sign felled and Karlin were famous. - I'm a norm. - I'm a norm, yeah. - A norm. - A norm was huge. I didn't know you could do that kind of thing. - Who was like your guy when you were starting? - Starting? - Yeah. - Before starting. - I would say, it was probably rockin' Karlin. - Me. - And Patrice. - Oh, sure. - And Quinn. - Yes. - As a kid, I love Damon Wins. - Me too. I mean, Sheep Hell has always been Sheep Hell, Sheep Hell, Sheep Hell. - Damon Wins kind of doesn't get his due as a standup though. - I think it's crazy that I never hear his name from that time, but it was the time when it was Eddie Murphy and Damon Wins. - Wow. - Up until about Chris Rock. - Right. - It's Damon Wins was the guy. - Yeah. - I don't know why people have such amnesia. - Well, he's almost cursed because his character is like, "Homey the clown and met on film." Like those were so fucking funny that you forget about the standup. - But his standup was fucking tight. - Oh yeah. - The standup was amazing and his characters was amazing. Like he could do anything. - And he could. - And he has some good movie. Even with movies, I kind of like, oh yeah. - I like the great white hope. - Sort of a great white hype. - Great white hype. - But it's a hilarious and his sitcom was great. - Yeah. - Damon Wins is like, it's crazy. - I like bulletproof. - Make it pain. - Oh yeah, blank man. - Blank man is like a clown. Mo money was like. - The last Boy Scout. Holy shit. - Yeah, yeah. - Oh, Shane Black. That was when he got like an advance of like two million for that script. - Oh my god. - Like script for a hot. - What, Blank man? - No, last Boy Scout. - Oh. - Oh yeah, at Willis. - Oh yeah, I remember we played the gay guy in Beverly Hills Cop. - Oh yeah. - We played the gay guy Saturday night live. (laughing) That's how he got fired. - Oh, that's right. - Yeah, he got fired because they gave him a role just like as a support, like a cop. He was supposed to be just a cop in a sketch. And he just played it as a gay guy. - Oh. (laughing) - What are you doing? This is like, so distracting. - Yeah. - Anyway, something like Colin Quinn wrote. - That's true. - And Quinn wrote that. - Yeah. - I didn't know that. - Damien Williams. - Yeah, bamboozled, which is like a last movie. - Oh yeah, is that a Spike Lee? - Bamboozled is a Spike Lee. - Uh-huh. - Yeah. - Oh, he's in Roxanne. Like, that was like the craziest. - That is crazy. - Cool, was he cool as a guy then? He was the, he's the coolest guy. Like, the coolest guy. I remember he asked me. He was like, when you do stand up, like, what do you wear? And I was like, why are you talking like you're not Steve Martin? (laughing) As you didn't do fucking football stadiums in the '70s. - Yeah. - It wasn't even a thing, you know? - That'd be fun if you were like, I'd go with a white suit. (laughing) He was my football stadiums when like, football teams wasn't selling up football stadiums. - That's true. - Like, he was that guy. - Yeah, that's true. - Yeah, he said he saw like two empty seats eventually. He was like, I'm out. This is on the way down. - He said he quick as a Friday Late Show. - Right. - Wait, what? - That was in his book. - Oh, yeah. - Good book. - He told me one time, I think he, well, I don't know, I don't know if this is in the book as well, but he told me one time, like as a TV star, he'd walk in a room and people would be like excited to see him. And then a movie star would walk in and they'd be like, oh, like the reverence. And he's like, oh, I got to do movies. - I feel like that was like, it was like a different type level of respect that movie stars got than TV stars. - Right. - And I think now it might be flipped. - Yes. - I think TV stars, I don't know. - No, you might have like a Brian Cranston might trump Jeff Bridges. - For sure. - Yeah. - Well, shout out to Jeff Bridges. - No, I like Jeff. - Hey, we love the dude, man. - Yeah, but that could be true. - Yeah. - But you see like all the big movie stars are doing TV? - Exactly. - I just thought Eddie Murphy's doing like a fucking TV. - That's not way. - Matthew Winer, dude. - Yeah. - What? - And that's gonna be crazy. - Holy shit. - I wonder what, yeah. - I have something to do. - Man, I can't wait for that. It's a girl went up bomb and I said, I'm staying over here. - Yeah, yeah. We're not doing that. We'll stay in our place. - I remember, dude, the person I've seen him in person was SNL 40th anniversary. And I remember we were, everybody was in the studio for rehearsals. They was rehearsing the Jeopardy with Will Ferrell. - Oh, yeah. - Norm and all those guys. - Wow. - And, you know, so just like people just kind of like floating in and I remember Jack Nicholson and Paul McCartney. - Jesus Christ. - Together, they're talking and people just like snapping pictures. - That's wild. - And then fucking Eddie Murphy walks in. Everybody stops taking pictures and starts taking pictures of it. - Oh wow. - And I was like, these motherfuckers just walked away from Jack Nicholson and a beetle. - Wow. - To take pictures of Eddie Murphy. Everybody's here. It was that. - Oh, dude, see, see, the way my dad would laugh at Eddie Murphy growing up was like, I was like, oh, shit, my dad is like, it's hard to make him laugh. And he'd throw him Beverly Hills Cop and he'd be fucking laughing. - Oh, yeah. - I remember in the studio. - It wasn't even a comedy. - I know. - He made it funny. - He made it funny. - He made it funny. He was supposed to be still low. - Yeah. - He's been action movie. - Yeah. - But the action scenes are good. It's just a great movie. - It's a great movie. - But dude, I've never seen a nutty professor in the theater with my dad. - I don't think I heard a theater laughed at hard. - Dude, that fart scene, the part of the movie is that like Eddie Murphy's never in Oscar discussions where I'm like, you made all these characters in actual human beings. - Oh, I know. - Yeah. - With the fat suits. - He's made the mom like a sweet boy. He made the dad like a, he made them all like humans. - Totally, totally. - You're not just doing caricatures. I'm like, dude, that's more impressive than any shit. - Jim Carrey too, like this should be. - Yeah. - Yeah. - And you're like, how the fuck is this not the best thing that you've done this year? - No respect. - There's a great picture at 30 Rock.
