I got to figure out what place that I'm going to get it from. You know what I'm saying? But I'm going to make sure that this day gets some heavy meat for the week. I don't feel comfortable giving you his address. Joe, you got to do it, bro, because people are actually getting at me like I'm incapable of following through the something I said I was going to do. I meet some friends for lunch or whatever. And that actually, it takes us to our barbecue. The place is packed every time you go into this, you cannot like you have to wait. It's good. Yeah, man. It's just really good, man. And I mean, again, my mom was like, would it they have any black people back there cooking? And I was like, no, but there was a bunch of black people in line. And so I was like, so does that satisfy your standard? And it did. She really enjoyed the brisket. So it is man. Why people that know how to barbecue though? Yeah, I like black barbecue better, but like, it's mad white people. Barbecue is one of those things to where it's mad white. I think it's cultural on both sides, you know what I mean? Yeah. Well, see the talk is, oh, I don't just say this. Well, I mean, my mom wanted to know more about cleanliness. No, who would there's a group of people that she doesn't think can make barbecue. And she wanted to make sure that group of people, whether the people preparing her barbecue. Also, she's a racist. So what, so, so, so what, so there's a specific group of people she doesn't want to barbecue for her. She's racist. No, she just, just, just drop it, dog. If any, any other person that would say something like that, we have to call it out, call out your mom. It's fine. Look, racist. Who, what, like, what, what people. Hold on, I'm going to try to think. So would it, like, let's say you went to a, would you eat at a restaurant? If I'm sorry. I don't know. You, I mean, you would not, you know, what, I mean, Don Cheeto and rush Harry. Just wait a second. Okay. So look, but here's the thing. No, I don't know how to do this. This is why this is interesting. It's interesting that if, if you're talking about the Asian community overall or like whatever, what I would say about that is this is what I would say is what I've learned is that our Asian brothers and sisters, when they decide that they are going to commit to a cuisine. They're locked in. They start putting their mother fucking food in that bitch. I mean, Korean barbecue is incredible. Korean fried chicken. Are you nuts? But, but I will say apparently the Korean fried chicken thing is because of the brothers that went over there during the Korean war and they taught him how to fry chicken. That is the, that is the story that I've You know, the etymology of the story. But actually, my mom wasn't concerned about Asian people making barbecue because actually not that you mentioned it. Now, I'm sure that that happens in Texas because Texas and Houston in particular is very diverse. I don't know if I've ever seen an Asian person working on the grill at a barbecue restaurant and being back there, man, on the pit. I mean, have you, but I do know is that like There's growing barbecue and there's a lot of different like the kicking ass. Can I say something? If you're Asian in the barbecue game, here that's up. Let us know. Yeah, by the way, we've seen, I've seen like a lot of our Asian brothers and sisters that come over here and that for America for the world cup and they try and taste the barbecue in a couple places actually in Japan that are now doing the Texas barbecue and kind of stuff like that. It's going to worldwide. I'll say this about that Korean fried chicken story. That story is either true and this beautiful example of cultural exchange or it is literally the most devastatingly racist story that's ever been told. And I've heard that before because think about it because think about it. It's like Other cultures when they talk about the exchange, they talk about oh fuck the like people met and they exchange algebra They changed the printing press the written word all that stuff like that. They exchange like Geometry it is like Okay, so we could be here Like they went there like it taught them. It's all about fried chicken. I'm like, oh shit. I cool That's where we explain Is a beautiful exchange you as military presence After the Korean War introduced deep fried chicken as a popular Korean cuisine There's a couple of links to this now. It's illegal to gamble there. But if you're out 60 miles, then you have your own laws. That's the only reason I know this. And yeah, so when you're on a cruise, you're kind of lost sign. - Let me see what the maritime law is. Unless against the actual, but whatever you sign to go on the cruise, basically you're basically saying, "Hey, that can happen to me." So, I don't know. - I feel like if you know maritime law too, reach out to us 'cause I want a little bit more clear. I mean, I'm not gonna go on the cruise. - No, I'm not an expert on maritime law. I'm just saying, cruises are, it's a questionable decision. - I feel like there's probably got to be some sort of justice. (laughing) - I think there is agreed upon justice. Let's get to it. One big reaction, Manning Passing Academy. I don't start with you, Van. Like, how much did you see from the Manning Passing Academy? Like, how much was this like an actual storyline? Because I've seen a lot of podcasts talking about it, but I don't know how much we really got other than a couple of clips, but what stood out to you? - Really the only thing that stood out for me, is like the buzz and everything that what I heard and saw was who obviously Arch is going to be a story. So it's three stories. It was Arch who did well and then who did poorly. It looks like Arch kind of split the baby a little bit. It looks like you see Arch, and obviously Arch is very talented, but he's running into people who expect him to be paid Manning, or really even Eli Manning. 'Cause Eli Manning was probably the more physically gifted of those two brothers. And he's, that's the thing that Arch is to me still dealing with is that if you watch the way he threw, if you watch the way he moved around, that he was good, but people are expecting wow. And it doesn't seem as if Arch has wild anyone yet, and they're still holding that against them. - I do think there's like an algorithm issue with Arch Manning, 'cause like on one app, I saw Arch Manning throwing bombs. It's like, man, how great does Arch look during the Manning Passing Academy? Then the other, you know, I get on Instagram, and I'm scrolling, and I don't know, maybe it's like some Heyter DNA that's in there, but I get like Arch Manning over throwing out routes, and he looks terrible. So like I don't know, depending on what videos you saw of Arch Manning, you could have a totally different perception of how he did and what he looked like. - Yeah, no, I mean, so I grounded some tape, you know, I watched a lot of those quarterbacks. I watched a lot of the quarterbacks throw there. And yeah, Arch did have the worst throw that I saw. Like he missed the most of any guy that threw a ball that day, it looked like. - You're talking about one specific rap though? - Yeah, one rap, there's one, but they don't get that many. - We've all seen that video, yeah. - Apparently they don't get that many reps though, you know what I'm saying? - 'Cause there's a lot of guys. - They got to rotate through a lot of guys. So, and I think, I'm guessing this was the Friday night competition where everybody comes out. Also, they were booing Arch, and it's this thing. Like, and I'm like, what, what did Arch do to Louisiana? I don't understand. Nobody ever thought he was going to Ellen. - He didn't go to LSU. - Well, I mean, the Manning's don't fuck with LSU like that. The Manning's, we haven't gotten any Manning's. The Manning's aren't really, like, they're not really, they're not really from, they from New Orleans, but for real, that's a culturally Mississippi group of people, very much so, you know what I mean? They're dad, they look, all of that stuff, I get it, they're from New Orleans, but they're not, nobody expects anybody named Manning to go to New Orleans or have anything to do with Louisiana too much. - Well, that's when people showed up the table though, and the boo him, that was kind of crazy. So, I thought that was interesting, but it just sort of reminds you about the expectations that follow that guy, because that's the way everybody got interested in the Manning Passing Academy to read anything else, because it's like, what did Arches look like? What did Arches look like? And he looked okay, like you said, like I saw when I was grinding tape, you know, he also threw a deep-- - Did you have actual tape, or are you just grinding like the video clips that we've all seen? - No, I watched about a 20 minute video of the quarterbacks dropping back on YouTube today. - So real grinding. - Yeah, real grind, real tape grind, yeah, not yet. Not that many reps, and I didn't get every, like I didn't see Kevin Jennings, I didn't get to see JKS, anything like that, but, you know, Arches looked all right, but to do, I gotta say something about this guy. I don't know if it's gonna work out, but this dude, he probably's not gonna be at Mississippi State much longer if he lives in his talent. - It was dude. - He was talking about him. - Camario Antonio Laquon Taylor, six before 230. He dropped back and through a comeback route, and the announcer, who had never said anything. Like he just said, who's coming up? He'd be like, up next, you know, Connor Wegman. He never said anything else. When Camario threw the ball, you hear him say, oh wow, and then, good lord. And so, and I mean, man, like he started the last two games last year, you know, lost, but that's sort of a tough spot for a true freshman. I mean, I don't know, you know, what else he has around him in Mississippi State, but I look at that dude, and I was like, God damn, man, he might have something to him. - Yeah, he made some plays last year. He's got all the athleticism. Kinda reminds you a little bit of, in terms of the total package, with like a guy like Sellers at South Carolina, and what they could be if the upside was ever realized. - Would you rather, I mean, you all haven't seen him play yet. Would you rather have Camario Taylor or Bryce Underwood? - I've seen Camario Taylor play a little bit. Like he doesn't have a ton of tape, but like, I mean, you know, the thing about Bryce Underwood, man, is we're really gonna be able to see this year what Bryce Underwood can do. Well, hold on, I can't say that at all. We're still yet to see somebody just let Bryce Underwood rip. - Yeah. - It would have been awesome to see him in a situation like this where it's all about the passing. Bryce Underwood, his talent is so much about the package and all that stuff. I can't say which guy I would rather have because I honestly, even though there's, I've seen so much more of Bryce Underwood than I see that this guy, and you'd have to take Bryce Underwood as some kind of silly even talk about. But there's so much more from Bryce Underwood that you want to see. - Yep. Especially with the arm talent. - With the arm talent, so much more that you want to see. And the question is, will you get a chance to see it and if they aren't cutting him loose? Is there a reason why? - Yeah. That's kind of what I want to, yeah. I think this is the year that he'll get a chance. And you know, they got the Utah offensive coordinator who worked with Devon Damp here. Devon Damp here looked pretty good. But also, as I mentioned over and over throughout the season, I didn't think he could throw very well. So, and that ultimately limited him. That was the ceiling on that team. And so hopefully, Bryce looks a little bit better. But the Camario guy, like, I hadn't seen a lot of him. I don't know why I didn't get to see the egg bowl last year. So, I missed his first start. But I mean, that do looks physically impressive in a crazy way. So, I hope he has a little bit more success this year. - Yeah, another story. Another guy that stood out, CJ Carr, for the other name. - So I'm going to say what? - Yeah, I listen to McShay and I listen to Mention. They were just, I mean, McShay was giving glowing reviews about CJ Carr. Does that change your perception of Notre Dame a little bit then? - Yeah, because they lost a lot, right? They lost two fucking studs, right? But if in fact, what did you say? - Two fucking studs. They lost two fucking studs. - Yeah, that's how they have fucking studs. - Oh, me, wait, just give me, but no, I mean, if he's ready, I mean, that's what Notre Dame is. has been like looking for an asking for, probably in a little bit of approximated, like a really gritty Notre Dame quarterback didn't go out there and win you games. But like, as far as he was limited, right? But as far as a guy that can like execute an offense or win a game from the pocket if Notre Dame can do that, I think with the defense and the discipline and the way that they play physically, everywhere else that people are gonna look for Notre Dame and go pretty deep into playoffs. And so I mean, people were wondering at about car and if he's that, then look out. - Yeah, I heard someone say that we had been talking about the wrong NEPO kid the whole time. You know, Arch Manning, obviously the headliner, but CJ Carr, Lloyd Carr's grandson. Also another kid that has some, you know, football familial ties that are pretty strong. And he looks really good. I mean, he looked good against Miami in that first game last year. I mean, he popped to me from the start. And I think he's only gonna get better. So the fact that he was a standout in that sense and everybody was talking about him, I think that's really encouraging for Notre Dame. - Oh, yeah, absolutely. It's going to be a work on the field in terms of his football development and progress. And he's never one that tried to hype him. To that same point, though, bro, if you and every ad, you got to give to somebody else. It's just the way it works, bro. If you come out there and you're that hyped and we've got to see your face every commercial break, which you with the warri parkers on, you can't do that and then go out and struggle. And now only that you can't do that and go on to be average. You have to do that and go out and actually will be shine. And yeah, I'll say this last thing that is normally, normally a critique that is reserved for a professional athlete that like that like that knows how to deal with those types of pressures because they've been doing it longer. You know, you wonder, you wonder if there's a difference for someone that's 19, 20 years old in the way they're going to be able to deal with that. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, you know, and I agree with you, but also we just don't ask that question of tennis, phenoms, golf phenoms. You know, I'm saying that first round picks in the NBA, you know, 19 year olds are professionals in lots of contexts. And again, I know that people are going to say a lot of baseball players. Yeah. But they are, but we don't look in all the sports that you're talking about. The phenom situation is is going to be significantly less routine than it will be in college football. Like the it's in the sports that you're talking about, there are wonder kids in tennis, right? There are wonder kids in basketball, but there's going to be a never ending conveyor belt of them in college football because of just of the mechanism of the sport of the college basketball as well, to be honest with you, of the mechanism of the sport. And to be real with you with the the straight out of high school thing that was going on in the NBA, they actually went back and went, maybe that's actually not working for the athletes and for the league. As much as we thought it was, they also kind of did that to be on the dick of college basketball to be honest with you. So, so there's a lot of reasons why that happened. I'm not saying that none of that should exist. I'm not saying it at all, but what I'm saying is there is a specific way that you would have to exist in support of these young men at this age to be dealing with all of that. All the, think about the stories that we heard from, I'll shout about this, think about the stories that we heard from Marcus Lathamore and everything that he talked about and everything. Like that's a lot for a kid, man. They're like, it is. And then when you put all of that other stuff on there, I just hope that these young men, they earn it potentially is what it is and it should be. I just hope that they get into support that they need as men as well as young men as well because that's a lot, man. I feel, but see, the thing is, I feel like it was tough for kids even before they knew they were getting paid, right? Yeah, there was, I mean, how many stories that we heard of people, nah, I couldn't go to class or, you know, death threats and kickers who miss, you know, miss key kicks and college football. So I think for him, he's got a large portion of his money. And he's got a full year away from the game. So what I hope for Britain and Sorosby is that he builds the structure that he needs. Number one, not to relapse. Number two, to continue to build this, to build his career and look at all of this as adversity that he brought on to himself. Now that he does it. But, uh, man, I just, you know, CJ2K, I, I did not know, was that that stage or anything. And that was like a real, uh, sobering thing to, to see the interview with straight hand and everything. But I remember, I saw Chris Johnson at ECU for the first time. And I was like, that's the fastest person I've ever seen in my entire life. Fantastic athlete. I don't, I don't have one thing to say about this is that, uh, that was an announcement that he was making about his condition. Mm hmm. I'm not so sure if that was the proper form to, to sit down and have a hard-hitting conversation about the rigors and the physical demands of the NFL game. Thank you for talking to doctors. We're talking to owners. If we're talking to coaches, you can have that conversation. But I think what I took away from that was a man sitting down, uh, talking about just an enormously difficult topic, right? Like he was diagnosed. And when I saw him, yeah, he didn't, when I saw him, this just happened. It moved so fast. Yeah. It moved so fast. And so, you know, we all have to make sure that we hold a certain journalist's standard when you're, we're in those situations. But I personally think that Michael straight hand did exactly what he was supposed to do there, which was allow Chris Johnson and his wife to tell their story about one of the most devastating sets of circumstances that one could deal with in a brave and triumphant way. So, you know, wait, let me ask you this, man. Would you, would you have asked a question? No. You would have really? No. I mean, I don't think really. I wouldn't have. I look, if the question would have been asked, I don't know that I would have had a huge problem with it. Yeah. But in that scenario, in that situation, I just don't think that it was a, I wouldn't have felt comfortable doing it just because he's, that didn't seem like that was what, what the moment was about. Like, but, but give me your take on it, though. No, I don't think you guys don't know what we're talking. Should we settle what we're talking about? It's like, like, yeah, I mean, Michael, yeah, Michael straight hand did an interview with Chris Johnson and his wife. And, uh, you know, basically talking about his diagnosis. And I mean, they were comparing, I mean, even a year ago, how much change, I mean, it has happened dramatically fast. And then there were a lot of people that came out after the fact that basically called out straight hand for not asking about the implications of playing football and what, you know, what that had to do with his injuries and, you know, what happened. And, you know, as far as the involvement as the disease to football and the correlation, but go ahead, Joel. No, so Vand made a very compelling smart argument that I agree with. When he said an announcement, I was like, it cleared for me. I was like, you know what? He's right. But I don't think if somebody, I think there is a humane way to ask that question without it feeling out of pocket. You know, out of pocket. Just like, I mean, I think a question would be like, you know, some people think that football may have causes. Would you ever play football? You know, if you had to do all over again, would you play football? Boom. You know, I had to interview Kevin. I just feel like that takes away from his story. I don't think if you, if you don't ask like a bunch of hard followers, are you serious? Well, I mean, a lot of people, the study shows this. I mean, I didn't have to become. But then the story is like, Chris Johnson says, I miss, you know, his ALS diagnosis that he would not or he would still play football over it. You know, I still feel like the headline was Chris Johnson has ALS because we didn't know that. Well, to take point. And so listen, once again, to take point, if he says I would still play football, it's it's from my TMZ days. That was one of the ones that if you got to answer, you got a headline. And the headline is a 50 50, no matter how strong it is, I would still play football, even though I have this ability to disease at 39, or I wouldn't have played football had I like like you get the headline. But the headline does become him talking about that to me, at least, and not him telling the story about his diagnosis and things like that. And this is the last thing I'll say about it. As a regards that, you know, this Chris Johnson know the statistics is Chris Johnson have they maybe you get in like that. Do you ask, are you are you aware that you're four times more likely to develop LAS if you played in ALS if you played in the NFL? Is that something that Chris Johnson knows? I mean, I would imagine that there have to be some conversation of his career and how I might have affected him. But how deep can he actually even go into that? And we're going to have that conversation. Do you have it with the person stricken with the disease? Or do you have it with someone who can be held accountable for what it is that they say about those statistics and about the safety of the players? Like Roger Gidell. Well, that's a that's a fair thing to ask Gidell or owners in the NFL. I think that it's a it's a it's a natural question. And it's something he's almost certainly has to know about because he's going to have to be grappling with the NFL for his health care for the rest of his life. I mean, I don't I mean, I list the NFL is all of a sudden become extremely generous and is about to take care of his health care for the rest of his life. But like inevitably, it's going to come back to that and it's going to be aggressive. And the reason I'm saying I interviewed a former NFL runner back Kevin Turner, um, he had ALS is 2013. He died about about 2016. He was like 41 years old. And it was like, yeah, but ALS just took him immediately. But the reason he was talking is because the NFL was fighting them in that concussion related class action lawsuit, right? And so, I mean, maybe you're right, Vanden Tate that that wasn't that that wasn't the time for it. But I would imagine that inevitably Chris Johnson is going to be at odds with football or the NFL because, I mean, it seems clear that there's some sort of link there and he's going to want them to be, you know, legally impossible for paying out. That there will be monumentally stupid to stone on him in any way, even if they had with other players, he made this announcement on Good Morning America. I know, I know, I know. I know. I know. I'm just saying in that situation, Jesus Christ. Yeah, that would be such a fumble for them. Yeah, like they read like just monumentally stupid to get into that type of situation with him when he was just in front of the whole world. You know, it was very moving. I just, you know, I don't know. He's just not too much on Michael Strayhand here. That is not an easy situation. And you want to know who Michael Strayhand is, right? You want to make sure you're in 60 minutes. I imagine they came to him because they didn't want like a right. Yeah, precisely. They wanted to have this story and talk about what they've been going through and maybe answering questions about that situation in the NFL, the medical, maybe that's beyond their pay grade right now. But, you know, I understood, I understood it. I just thought, God damn, that's a tough one. That's a tough one. Yeah, it's tough to see. I was looking to see you. By the way, ever the Saints, man. Yeah, he didn't. So he didn't, he didn't sue the league. But because of Kevin Turner's, his role in that lawsuit, apparently now people that are diagnosed with ALS, they can receive up to $5 million from this compensation fund. So amazing. I mean, you know, what's crazy though? $5 million sounds like a lot of money to start talking about medical care for the rest of your life, you know, right? Particularly in the business. Yeah, I did you know, right? Like, you know, how, how that works and all the care that you need and what needs to happen. But, um, the bottom line is God bless, Chris Johnson is friendly and all the, the young men, young women out there playing sports and doing things like that, you know, just kind of be cognizant of what the risks are.
