My mother-in-law lives in a different country so whenever we see her to use she from around five days at a time. This is the podcast tackling 40-something life every week diving into midlife, the news, your stories, your dilemmas that we try and solve, sometimes helpfully, sometimes judgmentally. Yeah, sometimes there's a side order of mild judgment, mild and bring you our own mess of navigating the challenges of this decade. We definitely do that and we hope that that counterbalance is the judgment bit. We're here, we figure out how to survive midlife together one rant, crisis, meltdown at a time. Oh, all three, if that's the day that you are having. Please remember that you can subscribe on Apple Podcast for early access and actively listening across this show and our other podcast self-care club. And you can watch the video every week on Spotify and YouTube. And please remember that if you love this show, please do share it with your nearest and dearest or as far afield as you like because it is the easiest way to grow a show is through word of mouth. So please share it with someone that you think could do with a bit of 40-ish in their lives. Now tell me, what is the most 40-ish moment of your week? Well, I mean, I did it with a 40-ish moment but I did, I spent the weekend trekking. This weekend? Wrecking! I trekked from Eastbourne to Brighton. That's quite the schlep. But it turns out it's a 26-mile walk. Basically a marathon. It is a marathon. But walked. Yeah. Wow. And it's all coastal and it's absolutely beautiful. It's a gorgeous day. It was perfect. And we were doing it in aid of the food bank. And we have raised nearly 30,000 pounds, which is absolutely fantastic. In fact, what I would love to do is pop the link in our show notes. So if anybody would like to donate, that would be amazing. The food bank that we are raising it for is actually the North London hub. So all the food comes in there and then they give it out to all the other food banks across North London. And it is responsible for feeding over 20,000 people a week. And the reason you did it was because it was my dad, my dad volunteers at the food bank and it was his 80th birthday. And this is how he wanted to celebrate. I mean, how else would you celebrate your 80th than doing a 26-mile walk? Well, he did want to do Kilimanjaro, which I had to talk him out of. But back to my most 40th thing. So we went away for this weekend. And as it turns out, I mean, I am a chip off the old blog. There is. You are. So if you can, like Quasas, those of you that have listened to the show from the early days and you know me as well as as well as Lauren does now, you know what I'm like. Well, just picture my dad who's just a bit older, a bit wiser and a bit more mad than I am. That's my dad. Please don't do this feel 50th because I don't want to do a 26-mile trek. Well, my 50th is not that far away. I feel like I'm done with the trekking. Okay, thank God. Because you will really expect me to do that with you. And I just don't want to. I would never make you do a trek. I actually, I love you dearly. You don't want to trek with me? No. Okay. You're going to your right. My friend Sharon came. Yeah. And she's my gym friend and my paddle friend and we spend a lot of time together doing a lot of activity together and she came and she did it with me and she is so fit and so strong and she really found it immensely challenging and there was a lot of moaning coming from Sharon. So if it's a lot of moaning coming from her, I couldn't even begin to imagine the amount of moaning that's coming from you because it was very off-brand for her. And she was like, it was a real mental challenge for me. I'm like, well, it is a long way. Yeah, a long way. I mean, I loved it. I was in my absolute element, as was my dad anyway, having to reign your 80 year old father in to try and keep him safe and to keep him well throughout a 26 mile trek is harder than it sounds. Oh my God. I was basically, I felt like I was babysitting my dad this weekend. Well, I was babysitting my dad. He's full on and he has a law on two. And as am I a little bit, but he's he's much naughty of me. And he's much less obedient than I am. So we were, what we had decided to do was because it's 26 miles and there are different routes that you can take and you can do half. So he's had a lot going on and he's moving house this week. So I said to him, please dad, can we just do half? This was a few, a few weeks ago and he never really agreed to it, but I kind of went into the walk knowing that we were going to do half and there are about 20 of us that went and we all went up on Friday. And so Friday afternoon, we were sort of hanging around in Eastbourne and everyone went to the pub and I went to a bit of shopping and I came back 20 minutes later and I looked at my dad's face and I said, what? And everyone sort of giggling nervously. I'm like, what? Because everyone was scared of me at this point. And by this point, my dad was calling himself my prisoner. And I was the prison guard. And every time someone asked him like, do you want to drink? I don't know, you'll have to ask my prisoner. And everyone was like, do you just want half a point home? Because you're only allowed half. It was the jokes we're wearing very thin by this point. So I said, what? And he goes, well, I think what we should do is we should start off with everybody. And I'm like, dad, I've been gone 20 minutes. He goes, no, no, we're going to negotiate. So the whole afternoon was just negotiating basically how much of the walk I was going to let him do. How much did he do? He did 20 miles. We cut out the seven sisters, which is immensely challenging in times of the up down. Okay. And it would have been too much on his knees. But other than that, he absolutely bossed the rest of it. Good for him. Yeah. But it was like, I don't know what I was more exhausted from, babysitting my dad or the actual drug. Both. I got gifts, gifts from my husband. He said to me, it's nice. Oh, it's not really. He said to me, I've ordered some presents they're coming tomorrow. Get excited. It's like rubber gloves are sunny. And I was like, oh, I mean, it is our anniversary suit. Oh, yeah. What sort of presents might they be? Anyway, they came Amazon three big boxes. Big, quite big boxes. He was like, here you go. Here's your presents. I said, they're shit aren't they? He's like, why don't you open them and see? Present one, three washing up brushes. Because he doesn't like the washing up brushes that we have in the kitchen. Present two. Present two. A new toilet cleaner, you know, like the brush, toilet brush cleaner for our bathroom. Present three, the big box they want to get really buzzed about. A new bin for the bathroom in white, he said, because I felt like it matched everything. There's my gifts. I said, they're really like, they're not, they're not what I would call a gift. What were you gift on? They're more just like the house, the house, the house, the house, the stuff for the house. I really hope. Was he joking about the gift? I mean, he was joking. He was joking. Because that would be really misogynistic if he wasn't. No, he, he was joking. Yeah, good. So not gifts. No, but he thought it would be fun for me to open that. Oh, that was what a lot we had. It is so - The world in your house of the weekend. - Oh my God, it's crazy. - Crazy. - Yeah. - The other footage thing I did this week, yeah, was that I took Bieber. Actually, I entered Bieber into a beauty contest. We went to a dog show. - Look at the mouth drop. - Yeah, that's what I was keeping secret from you when we went to see Hamilton last week. And I said, I'm buzzing to tell you where I went and where I'm going on the weekend, I can't tell you. - Oh my God. - And? - Okay, so it was the high gate dog show. And it was all in aid of the charity that I fostered the dogs from. - Oh yeah. - So you pay to enter and the money goes towards the charity. So I entered her into Miss Highgatewood. (laughing) - Now, the morning of the competition. - Is there a Mr. Highgatewood as well? - There is. - There is a best rescue category. There was a senior citizen category. And there was a best child handler category. So if you're a little kid, you can drop your dog round. Anyway, the morning of the competition, I'm not joking. She woke up a hopper seven and she threw up in my bedroom and Ollie woke up and he said, "I think she's nuts." (laughing) I dressed her in pearls. - She. - Yes, I did. - Yeah, she had a pearl necklace, double pearl choker. I matched her. - That's not a pun. - No, not a pun, an actual double pearl necklace. I matched her. And then I channeled Charlotte from that episode of Sex and the City. You know when she enters Elizabeth Taylor into the show and she trots her around. So we go to the beauty contest, my friend came. - Did she have diarrhea or something? - What? - Elizabeth Taylor. - No, she got her period on Charlotte's Prada Swade Boots. - Oh, that's right. I knew something. I knew something. They were bodily fluids of some sort. - So I literally, I pranced her round the field. - Trot, trot, trot, trot, trot with all the other dogs. It was the most fun ever. And then the audience had to shout out their favourites. And then, how many were in the category? - I'd say about 20. - Oh, steep, steep. - Lots of competition. Anyway, I'm really sorry to tell you that the prize went to a particularly unpretty pug called Polly, who was a rescue. - Pog, yeah, so I, she was robbed. It was what everyone in the audience said. (laughing) She was robbed. 'Cause I'm really sorry. I don't even need to see Polly to know that Bieber is prettier. 'Cause she's a prettier breed. - People in the audience were like, your dog in pearls. She's vastly pretty. I was like, I know, she was robbed. Anyway, sadly. - You probably could have actually kicked off in that competition. - Yeah. - She's also very beautiful. - Well, she brought shame upon the family. So we drove home via Batterie Dog's home. - I've left her there. - You haven't left her there. - That's him. - She's story. - Orally barking outside, desperate comments at the studio. - No, what actually happened was, we mildly cheated. And we entered her again into the best child handler category using my friend's small children. Rather insist to combo. We thought that'd be cute. So she trotted round the ring with them. We took the pearls off so she was in disguise. (laughing) And five of them won prizes and she was one of them. So she did come home with a prize that not in the category were hoping. That was my Sunday and wow, it was joyful. - That is, that is a new era. - Yup. - Can I just say something? - Right, when I first got Miley. - Yeah. - She wedged the groomers and the groomer put a flower on her collar. - In her hair, in her hair, here in the side, whatever. - You came over, you whipped it out of her hair and you were like, hated when people dressed dogs up. It's so tacky. You didn't even ask me. You just took it out. - You couldn't cope with the bow in the hair. - Right. - It was too much. - But it also wasn't your call. (laughing) - No. - And now. - And now. - Here we are with the doggy pearls. (upbeat music) (upbeat music) - We've got some feedback. Hi ladies, great to have you back. I had to reach out after last week's episode because it hit home in the best way. I'm 44, I have a small friendship group who absolutely love drum and bass. Five times a year we meet up and we make a whole weekend of going to a rave, usually Birmingham, Nottingham or Bristol. We pick nights and DJs that attract an older crowd and we have fully embraced the joy of day raves or anything that finishes at midnight. Have you come across Joe Wiley's home by midnight? It's exactly our vibe. Adults who love to party but don't fancy staying out till the early hours. We hear sounds out, city brilliant. Oh, have young kids. I love to dance. I love the music. I love to let loose. There is nowhere else you can chat so easily to strangers and make friends on the dance floor. We love it. And we're always planning our next rave festival or even a cheeky trip to Ibiza. Thank you for the episode. It's been a long summer of looking for podcasts to listen without your content. Love Jess. Thank you, Jess. I think that actually sounds brilliant and a really good fun. Hank joined BJ's wholesale club the day he became a father of 30. I coach football. That is the headline. Which I mean, Britain's most trusted high street forgot what it made it special. What did make it special? Crotch is apparently crotch is in knickers. Well, it was just good solid basis. Solid basis, yeah. Another journalist said has M&S gone SNM. I mean, that is the most brilliant headline. Well done, Jerno. M&S has started advertising crotchless knickers to its customers on Facebook. And fair to say, it's caused quite the stir. Technically, the knickers are actually by and some as one of the latest brands to be stocked at M&S, but it hasn't stopped people getting their knickers in a twist. Oh, fine, this journalist. Some people have said they no longer feel safe browsing in the M&S underwear department. Well, they are sold online, so you can still feel safe. Others have defended the store, saying it's simply catering to all tastes. Most people have used it as an opportunity to riff on the famous line. They're not just any pan. [LAUGHTER] The lacy knickers are described as a flirty upgrade to your lingerie. I'm quite down with this. OK. I am. I think it's great. Why not? I don't care the M&S is selling crotchless knickers. I mean, for M&S, I don't really see the point in crotchless because what's the fucking point? What is the point of a crotchless knicker? Because literally, the only point in wearing a knicker is to cover your labia. Holds the flaps in. But like, what if you're like a pantyline who in or-- You know, when you wear a little pair of-- If you're going to wear a pair of crotchless knickers, you're not going to wear them on a Wednesday to the office, are you? What date are you wearing? A Saturday night or a date night. That's when you're wearing crotchless knickers. That is when you're wearing crotchess. I would wear that on a date night, 100%. I just-- I don't get it. You wear on a date night. You don't get it for a date night. It's sexy. Is it-- is it, though? Is it sexy? Because it's like-- I don't-- I just don't know what I mean. Like, what is the point of a knicker waistband? I didn't care if it covers your bum or doesn't cover your bum, but cover the crotch. Like, that is the point of that. And don't wear any knickers. But it's a-- it's just titillation. Yeah. OK. Easy access. Oh, yeah. I've never worn a pair of crotchess knickers my life. Don't ask me the questions, but I'm just much more open to the issue. I am open to like, why are we against it? What's the problem? I'm not against it. I just don't want to wear them. Don't have to. Thank you. Nobody's actually forced you to. No one's even suggested that you should. No one's even bought you a pair. What you're getting is a washing up brush. Just before we dive into our lens as a quick disclaimer, we are not doctors, we are not health care professionals. If there is an issue that you are seriously struggling with, please contact a qualified expert. My mother-in-law lives in a different country, so whenever we see her, it's usually from around five days at a time. She regularly talks over people, dominates every discussion and tends to talk to us, no, tends to talk at us rather than with us. Much of what she talks about is her own life and people we don't know making it difficult to engage. She constantly interrupts me, my husband and my children whenever we're speaking, and during her last four days, she didn't ask me a single question about myself. My husband feels exactly the same way it would like to raise the issue with her, but he's worried about hurting her feelings. We find spending long periods of time with her incredibly draining because she lives abroad. We can't just meet her for a couple of hours, but together continuously for several days. We're at a loss as to how to handle the situation without damaging our relationship with her best wishes. Can I, can I, I have three words? Okay. They're not kind. I know what you're going to say, the first one is suck. Yeah, it's up. Yeah, and I, and I actually, I mean that with love, suck it up. Firstly, she lives abroad. Yeah, winning, winning because she's not there every Tuesday doing this. She's there for five days. Yeah, it's contained. It's really contained. Secondly, I mean, not even secondly, like she lives abroad. This is a good thing. Yeah, so what is the point in telling her? Because this is who she is. This is her character. She's not going to suddenly become meek and quiet, just because you've told her. All she's going to do is pull shit and self-conscious. I don't really think it's going to change anything. And also there is absolutely no way of saying anything to her without damaging the relationship. What are you going to say? You don't ask me a single question about myself. You're constantly interrupting me. You don't shut up. We find you annoying and too talkative. Just smile and nod, smile and nod. That's the best advice ever given to me. Whenever you're in these situations, channel Kate Middleton, smile and nod, talk about the weather and current affairs. That's it. That's what you've got to do. It's just pay it lip service for five days. I mean, look, it's a long time when you're with this person continuously for five days. It's a long time. But also, you're lucky that it is on its own contained and then you get a complete break from it. And also, could you do some things that require not talking like being at the cinema, going to the theatre, yoga? Yeah. Things where you have to be silent for long periods. While it retreats, meditation, sleeping, reading. Go to bed very early. Or costs. And my other advice would be just a large drink. If it's large glass of wine, if it's dinner, two large glasses of wine, just just sail on through a toast through it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Suck it up, slightly drunk. That would be what I would do. Suck it up, half lit. Now, you sent me a photo on the weekend. I mean, it was troubling. I didn't know whether to call like some the police or some like abuse hotline. You sent me the photo of you with these like swollen black eyes. This is how I woke up this morning. I was like, oh my god, what's happened to you? No, that is not what you said. That is not what you said. You said, oh, you said, wow. Yeah. And then you said, you don't have a line on your face. I'm like, how are you focusing on that now? Let's focus on the issue at hand, shall we? You never told me that I had both of us. You never told me what happened to your eyes. It was all over my face. It was all over my neck. I just woke up, literally woke up like that. What happened? I just had an allergy to what? Fuck nose. So I do get allergies. You know, I get allergies like that. I get weird allergies. And three weeks ago, I had the same thing all over my neck, all over the side of my face. You couldn't really see it with makeup on. And then it was just so itchy and burning, burning, burning hot. And then the same thing happened again. But it gets more violent. That's how allergies work. Anyways, the morning I was going on this bloody trek and I thought, oh, maybe I don't have to do the trek. So I took myself to the doctor that morning and he gave me some strong anti-histamine. I knew he would. I mean, I've been down this road so many times. It's very common for like hairdressers and beauticians to get very strong allergies because they're overexposed to products. Okay. But the reason it's my meltdown is it's like, no one knows what the fuck I'm allergic to. Well, it's about to say like, what had you done? He said it could, it's usually nails, right? Or hair color. Now, I am mildly allergic to both and I do have to take every time I color my hair. I do have to take anti-histamine. And he's like, but people don't, they don't like to hear that. And I'm like, well, what am I supposed to do? I can't. I'm really grey. Well, I use a different color. No, I didn't. And you can't just suddenly become allergic to something. And then he said, look, it was a doctor I've never seen, but I've never met him before. He was really nice. He goes, I know it's a bit of a, but this was so funny. He said, listen, I know it's a little bit of a buzz word at the moment. How old are you? And he starts looking at my notes. I said, I'm 49 years. Right. And I know that you're probably hearing about it a lot, but you see, when you're in the Perry menopause, stop. Reverse. Look at my fucking notes, mate. I had his rex me six months ago. I have a, I had two podcasts basically centered around the fucking Perry men of all. You have heard that word before. So, which did make me laugh, because he was sort of like tiptoeing around anything, one of the female rest of it. He didn't want to let you know that you might be in Perry menopause, possibly. Yeah. And it might be, you know, the rumbling of the beginning of the Perry menopause. I don't have any interest. I don't have over his, like, literally, you are blocking up the wrong tree. And I said to him, look, he was so sweet. So I didn't want to like piss on his parades. So I said to him, oh, yeah, I know. And things do get a little bit more exaggerated. Change, can't they? I've heard that things can get quite exaggerated in Perry menopause. They can. Yes, they can. Yeah. Yeah, I've heard a few things about that. You're just going to go gray now. Are you going to hit a new era? I actually don't really know what I'm going to do. So this is my meltdown. Like, what the fucking fuck? Now I can't have my nails done. Now I can't have my hair color done. I can't put fake tan on. I basically can't do anything fun. Nothing fun. Can't drink, right? Can't smoke, because that's obviously terrible for you. You know what? Sugar, that doesn't really agree with me anymore. Now I have to walk around with grey hair, shitty, cracked, short nails, pale, gross skin, because I'm not allowed to put fake tan on. So basically, like, what the actual fuck am I supposed to do for fun? Now, crutchless niggas! If you don't want to come near me and the crutchless niggas, if you are the Lordry list, that will be the only thing to tempt him. He'll be like, "Who's this hag in front of me?" All his way and the kids just out, like, having lives. How dare they be teenagers and adults with their own lives? So mummy dearest was like, "I was home alone, not." This was like a couple of weeks ago, so all of my friends, all of my friends were away. I had no one to play with. So I thought, "Okay." "You do like your own company." "Do, but. " "This was like the second night." "It was like a Saturday night." I was a bit fed up at this point, so I thought, "Okay, I'm going to. " I'm going to, like, go. I'm going to go and treat myself. I'm on my arm. I'm going to leave the house, because I haven't left the house all day, apart from all the dollars, I'm going to go out. I went to waitress. No, I went to M&S. I went to M&S. Did you go to class and crutchless niggas? No, I went to buy myself dinner, and I wondered up and down and up and down those aisles, and I. I could not. I could not choose dinner for myself. Anyway, I ended up writing a sub-stack about it in the end, because I just couldn't believe that I was a 48-year-old woman who didn't know how to buy dinner for herself. And then all he called in the middle of this, and I was like, "I can't pick dinner." He's like, You can literally get anything you want. Don't have crisps and wine for dinner. I was like, I just, I don't know. It got really bad. And I nearly, I mean, I nearly thought about Charlie Bingham's. I had to like ring myself in. So I thought, no, when you start going down that route, that route, Charlie Bingham's, oh my god, Charlie Bingham. It's like the middle class ready-middle of choice. Charlie Bingham. You can see it as many times as you like. The blank face. See age. Why are you pulling the blank face of that Charlie Bingham? Like, I don't know what you're talking about. OK, I'm very surprised. Why? I don't eat really meals. Because this is like when you said to me, what do you mean you've never seen Hamilton? Sorry, when have you heard me eat a ready meal? No, you have to eat them to have heard about them. Why would I have seen even Adverts? I mean, they're everywhere. Adverts? Yeah. Where? Where are they? On TV. Who watches Adverts on TV? Well, that's because you're spending too much time alone. [LAUGHTER] I don't watch Adverts on TV. Hands up, Quasas. If you watch Adverts on TV. I can't believe you have never had a Charlie Bingham. Anyway, I have heard. I mean, it sounds familiar. You know the name. But who is it? He's just a man. He makes ready meals for middle class people who don't want to cook for themselves. They kind of feel like they have, because they've put it in the oven. You know, do you like Amusaka? No. But I could chicken out for him now. Or something nice. Something nice. You pop in the oven in like a sort of wooden tray. I'm more fascinated by the fact that you're fascinated that I haven't heard about this. Yeah, I am. But why would I have? Because you go to supermarkets, you see things? I actually don't go to supermarkets that often. I did actually go the other day, but for the first time in months and months, I don't really go. I do on a carto shop. And it is, I don't do ready meals. No, I don't do ready meals, but I was alone. Anyway, I didn't buy one. Good. Yeah. I sound disgusting. You know what? I'll come on a chicken out for no, and I'm ready meal. That is so tragic. Like just no. The whole thing was tragic. We're looking up and down the arse with the empty basket. On the phone to my husband saying, I don't want to buy for my own dinner. Why? That was tragic. Why don't you know what to buy for your own dinner? Of course, I just cook and shop for a whole household. So when it comes to just me, it's just me and learning about Saturday night. I've been here before. What do I want? Do you remember this about the chicken breast? No. When, when have we been here before? Years ago, it was in a mildly post-COVID world. You had gone away for the night because you were just losing the fucking plot, and all these, like, just go spend the night in a hotel. You needed time out from your family, do you remember? Yeah. And it was the first time that you had been on your own. Yeah. And you did not know what to order for dinner. What to order for dinner? And I had them as shit dinner. 'Cause I was always so bad at it. And then you were like, 'cause we were doing a week of asking for what you want. Yeah. And you were like, I don't know what I want anymore. Yeah. Anyway, I ended up with very profound. I ended up with this hodgepodge of foods. I photographed it for him. I sent it to him. I was like, this is what I came home with. He was like, okay. I mean, it's random, but it's better than crisps of wine. I think crisps of wine is a great dinner. It's a solid dinner. It's a solid dinner. But that had already been Friday's dinner. I didn't want to have it again on Saturday. Okay. That is a good call. It was like, it's giant olives stuffed with a parma ham and manchega, they're really good. You wouldn't like the cheese bit, but they're really good. Oh, olives, all the ham. Okay, a bag of licorice all sorts. [LAUGHTER] Oh, cauliflower bites would like a sweet chili dip. You know, one at your five a day. [LAUGHTER] A soup that I didn't eat. And a pizza that I didn't eat. And a tin of spicy margarita. Which I did drink. [LAUGHTER] Good. And some tortilla triangle protein crunch things. Like, yeah, basically-- You see, it's been like 40 quid in a menace. And you basically had small olives. And some licorice. And I ate too much licorice. And then I gave it that bad stuff. Yeah. I was like, oh dear. It wasn't amazing. No. No. No. Do better. Yeah. Or dope, because that was great. [LAUGHTER] Oh, that's it, Quazis. That's all you're getting for the week. Okay, we'll see you when it's sign off. And we're going to record. We'll see you on Thursday, Quazis, yeah. Yeah, we'll be back on Thursday. Okay. Okay.
