Little Turtle and the Changing Sea

(upbeat music) ♪ Oh, hey, my friends ♪ So today we are reading a story called Little Turtle and the Changing Sea. This was written by Becky Davies. It was started by Ginni Poe. And we're reading this because yesterday we wrote about sharks and they were pretty cool. We bought a bunch of books and they're all sea-related. And you know, this is an interesting story because this month, this is April, April has a special day called Earth Day and it later in the month. And there's stuff that we have to do to take care of this planet. We've been put in charge of it, right? And it's our job to make sure that we take good care of what we've been given. And so this book talks a little bit about that. And that's kind of cool. Being responsible is super cool. So let's read it. It is called Little Turtle and the Changing Sea and it's read today by Mommy and. (upbeat music) What? (upbeat music) Oosa Transformer. Can you get it? Sorry. Okay, you know, friends, it's always so many new. So buckle up, here we go. It began with a thunderstorm, the rain lashed and waves crashed as Little Turtle pushed her way out of the nest and into the wet sand. She needed to be quick. One flipper in front of the other. She pulled herself down to the beach towards the safety of the sea. Thunder rumbled in the sky. As Little Turtle slipped into the sea for the very first time, the water rose to meet her. And she was just and turned in the spray. Which way was up? Tiny Turtles slashed all around her calling. Swim, swim. Just when Little Turtles flippers were tiring, she managed to hitch her ride. Her journey had begun. In the picture, we can see what it is that she hitched her ride on. And it kinda looks like maybe it's a log. Driftwood, perhaps. Warm currents carried Little Turtle over a carpet of color. She danced with the swaying sea grass. She swam with fish of every shape and size. What beauty? She said happy and content Little Turtle climbed into a cozy hall in a rock and slept. Months passed and Turtle was no longer little. She had outgrown her hideaway. But she would never outgrow the ocean. Yeah, in the picture, we can see she's in a little rock that has a hole in it. Turtles swam onward through miles of dazzling open water. She was alone, but she didn't feel lonely. The ocean was her friend. At last, Turtles' journey was complete. She had made it to the other side of the world. Home, side turtle, and what a home it was. Forging and feeding. Turtles lived there happily for many years. Until one day, it was time for her to return. To the beach, across the ocean where she had been born. How did she know where to go? I don't know either, but she must somehow instantly know. It's amazing. Maybe she has some sort of internal wiring that says, go back to that place. I don't know. She made the same journey many times, but found that each time, the trip was different. She saw new sites, made new friends, and welcomed some new little turtles into the world. Turtle, too, was different. As she grew each year, her love for the ocean grew with her. Yay. And then one day, the ocean itself was different. Ah, can you tell me why it was different? Because there's trash in it. Where does trash need to go? If you're at the beach, what do you do with your trash? Yeah, it should go into like the trash bin or a recycling or something. It shouldn't go into the ocean, should it? So when you're picking a king, you need to be responsible for yourself. Okay, colors disappeared and the turtle found strange new preachers swimming beside her. Friend, she asked, but she was met with silence. It didn't say anything back to her. That is because in the picture, we can see what it is. It is, in fact, a, it is a plastic bag. The strangeness grew and grew and nothing looked the same. And the turtle felt lost in the place that she knew most. There are waterbombs and trash. The ocean no longer felt like a friend. Hello? She spoke into the darkness, but turtle was alone. But just, hmm, you'll have to see here. Just when turtle thought her journey was over forever, figures emerged from the strangeness and swim toward her. It's human's and they're wearing a scuba gear. So they're, actually, it looks like maybe they're marine biologists or something because they came down and they saw her and she just trapped in some stuff. And she takes a look at them and she looks so sad and they take a look at her and they go, oh, we're gonna help. Turtle was free, little by little, she watched as they tended to the sea grass and the coral and her friends and then they cleaned up the garbage. Thank you. She said, and they had returned her to the ocean. And began, and began to return turtle's ocean to her. You see, it was once more beautiful and she loved it with her whole heart because what did they do? They picked up all the trash and they freed her so that she could be safe again. And then they let all the other animals be safe too by cleaning up all the stuff and making the plant life down there healthy, the coral and stuff in the seaweed. And it's really great when you have people who take responsibility for things. Just like a farmer takes good care of his pigs and sheep and cows. Well, marine biologists take good care of the turtles and the sharks and the fishes and the seaweeds and whatever you grow up to be, wherever you take responsibility of things, you're gonna have to take responsibility of something too. We all work together though to make sure that things get taken care of. And that, my friends, is the end. Thanks so much for listening to today's story.
