Lile Stays Hot in Narrow Win

It is out there. Dayland, Lyle homers to right field. He remains right high. Three nothing nationals on Lyle seventh over the season. Feeling pretty good right now. You know, just everything I've been in the Florida game to prepare for it and just going out there. Nothing to buy anything, just going to play having fun. The runner is second, Tana O'Neal. The only to bear is the runner at first, two out top of the night. Love Lady to the belt, the pitch. We got a ground ball up the middle. It's a base headed to center field. Rounding third, coming home O'Neal. Rounding second, heading for third to bear is, it's down to Nationals three, the Orioles two. With a time run now to bear is at third base. The bases are loaded. He comes set. One ball, two strikes, the pitch. Shapsack, he went to Mark Las Vegas. He's struck him out. Head up, curly down the loose other box. We'll tell him what he did, Alvi doing what he did and those two bullpen guys come in at night. And not easy spots. And welcome to Natschatt. I'm Al Goldie, host of the Al Goldie podcast. I'm joined by Washington Nationals insider Mark Sturgeon of Natschurnal.com. He's at Nationals Park. The Nats are back to being a game under 500. Will the curse of 500 continue? The Nats have lost 15 consecutive games when having a chance to get to 500 in a regular season. But a chance to break that streak will come on Saturday as the Natsch on Friday evening. Beat the Baltimore Orioles three, two at Nationals Park in Game 1 of a three game series. The Natsch and this game scored a run in the bottom of the fourth and two runs in the bottom of the sixth. And that held on tight for the win, despite giving up two runs in the top of the ninth. And so the Nats and MLB's 2026 regular season now are 22 and 23. Yes, one game under 500. So we on Friday evening at Nationals Park at the debut of the Natsch new team dog, Nadi, who is an eight week old golden retriever and Labrador retriever mix. His name was selected via a fan vote this past March. The name Nadi in case you're curious chosen over cherry, Monty and Tater and also at Nationals Park on Friday evening was a promotion and honor of Friday being hot dog day. Bottom line, the official attendance for this game was tremendous 38,912. Those in attendance saw Dalyl and Lyle have another good game, Homer double single. He's on fire for Homer's now over the Natsch last four games. The Nats pitching in this game very good, including Zach Lytel tossing five scoreless innings and Andrew Alvarez doing better than his final line of two runs in three innings suggests. But Mark, the curse of 500 is Saturday the day on which the curse comes to an end. I hope so, Al, because I don't want to write that story again. I did it the other day. I think we've exhausted that subject as far as this one. It was a really good crowd. And I kind of thought the hot dog promotion at first, I thought this was a little silly. Everything they're doing with that. But I'll tell you what it did. They had a big crowd. And for the first time in a long time, I really felt like it was overwhelmingly Nats fans and not Orioles fans. And I don't know if that was intentional or not, but I think it worked out pretty well in that regard. They had so many probably Nats fans that just bought tickets for this game because of the promotion. And it felt like there were a lot fewer Orioles fans out there. And so even though the Nats couldn't mustered up all that much offense in the game, and the Orioles had to play catch up there in the ninth inning, that sell out crowd got to relish a very nice win for the home team. Well done hot dog day. The theme is all over the place, including on this podcast. Well, the giveaway for Saturday is a great giveaway. It's Alex Ovechkin Bobblehead Day, but it's not just any old Alex Ovechkin Bobblehead. It's an Alex Ovechkin Bobblehead commemorating him being at a Nats game, the famous game in 2018, to which OV and the caps were in attendance, bringing the Stanley Cup. And then the caps tore up Washington DC that weekend as we have come to know by now. So these are some creative promotions. And I would think we'll get a good crowd on Saturday. I guess we'll see. But the crowd on Friday night, I mean, even if you expected a good crowd, I feel like that surprised people that the crowd was that good for two sub 500 teams. Again, 38,912 was the official attendance. Yeah, and they were in. Obviously it was a good game and that helped, but the crowd was in it all the way to the end. Other than probably that Dodger series, the first one of the season, I don't think we've had anything like that so far this year. We've talked about how attendance is down and season ticket bases probably down, are the fans of this town really all in on this never ending rebuild as it feels like. But I do give the Nats some credit here from a marketing standpoint. They've done a pretty good job of coming up with things beyond the actual baseball hall to sell, to create some decent crowds. And it hasn't been a great six weeks to start the year from an attendance standpoint, but it probably hasn't been as bad as I feared it might be. Some of that's obviously the loyalty of the fan base, but I think some of it also is some creative promotions that help give the casual fans a reason to come out here. And this is something we are seeing across baseball. Teams have gotten really good at this stuff when it comes to coming up with creative promotions. And MLB is in the midst of an attendance boom last regular season 71.4 million total fans. MLB surpassed the 70 million benchmark for a third consecutive season. That had not happened in eight years. First time that MLB had had three consecutive years of attendance growth since 2005 through 2007. You know, you combine that with some very good television ratings news for MLB in recent years. And there are some really good signs about the health of MLB, the popularity of MLB. But like again, I go back to you have two sub 500 teams, okay? Forget about the promotions two sub 500 teams and you get nearly 39,000 people in attendance. You know, you're not getting that at an NBA game between two sub 500 teams. You're not getting that at an NHL game between two sub 500 teams. In baseball, you get something like that, nearly 40,000 people watching two losing teams. I mean, you know, you think about it from that standpoint. It says a lot of good things about where MLB is at. It seems like a perfect time for a workstop. I don't know you. That just makes total sense to me. Well, and that's part of why I don't buy that we're going to be losing games next season. I don't. I think there's a lot of, you know, fire and brimstone coming from both sides, whether it's on the record or behind the scenes. But I think a lot of it's tough talk. I would be surprised if we actually see ultimately the cancellation of games. We may see the postponement of some games as we saw a few years ago, but I'd be shocked if these teams actually punt on actual revenue generating regular season games next year. I guess we'll see. I agree with that. And I think there's too much at stake on both sides of that equation. But we've got plenty of time to talk about that over the winter. We will absolutely in the meantime. The net's pitching in this game on Friday evening ended up being so good. And that was with Zach let tell as the team starting pitcher. We know the deal with let tell not exactly having a banner campaign so far, but let tell in this game easily is best outing so far five scoreless innings. He gave up just two hits, which were a double and a single. He issued two walks into hit by pitch. He recorded three strikeouts. He threw 87 pitches 49 strikes versus 38 balls. Then we had Andrew Alvarez back as the nets on Friday afternoon announced having recalled him from Triple A Rochester. He officially allowed two runs in three innings, but he was better than that. Three scoreless innings with five strikeouts, but he began with ended up being a two run ninth for the O's by giving up a first pitch lead off single by some well, but sayo to right field and issuing a four pitch walk of Tyler O'Neill. And then that's manager Blake Boutera pulled Alvarez from the game. Then things got very interesting. Gus Varlin faced three batters got two outs came into the game in the top of the ninth runners on first and second. No outs and the nets up three nothing. Varlin to the first battery faced issued a five pitch walk of pinch hitter Leody Tavarez to load the bases with nobody out. Varlin then generated a three pitch swinging strikeout of Kobe Mayo. Then induced a one out first pitch RBI sack fly by Jeremiah Jackson to cut the nets lead to three one and then Boutera pulled Varlin from the game brought in Richard Love Lady. He came into the game. Top of the ninth runners on first and second two outs. Nats up three one. Love Lady to the first battery phase gave up a two out RBI single by Gunner Henderson up the middle to cut the Nats lead to three two. Love Lady to the second battery faced issued a two out five pitch walk of Taylor Ward to load the bases. But then love lady generated a swinging strikeout of of all people. Adley Rutsman the guy who has been by for the Orioles best hitter this season to end the game and get the save. This was quite the adventure in terms of Nats pitching some really good stuff from Zach let tell and Andrew Alvarez. and then Varland and Love Lady finding a way to close out the game. You know, it looked like it was going to be such a nice, simple win for them with letel going five and Alvarez going four and no need to even consider anything else. And that was actually what Blake Boutair was prepared to do. He saw how Alvarez was cruising along. His pitch count was fine, he was 43 after three innings. He's stretched out as a starter at AAA so there was no reason that he couldn't stay in. So he gave him the chance, take the amount of the ninth. But as soon as you give up the lead off single and then a four-pitch walk, the tying run is at the plate. You feel compelled to make the move and go to an actual high leverage reliever. Now Varland was hit or miss that opening walk again hurt things. And then you get to Gunner Henderson. And I found this fascinating. You can stick with Varland and say he's the closest thing we have to a closer. Right now he's had some success in that roll. We're one out of way. Let's just stick with him and finish it out. But he went with the percentages and went with the lefty and love lady. Now that backfired because he gives up the RBI single and then the walk and you're thinking did Boutair over manage this in some way by not just trusting the right hander, no matter who he was facing, not worrying about the lefty righty platoons and all that. And then what does love lady do? He gets, as you said, Ruchman batting right handed at that time for the final out. This is one of those great like process versus results. Question, the results it all worked out. The process, I don't know if it was right or not, but it did work in the end and it just continues to show us that they will do whatever they need to do with whoever they need to do it out of the bullpen to try to close out games. And it may not always be pretty, but they've actually gotten the job done more than not over the last several weeks asking all kinds of different guys to do different things. Richard, love lady is certainly not your classic major league closer, but when push came to shove and there was no more room for air at that point with the bases loaded, he got the job done and worked out. So result over process, I guess in this one, right? Yeah, I mean, I don't mind the process. Henderson historically is not good against left handed pitching. So to do as Boutair did made some sense. And you know, Varlin, like you said, he can be good. He can be not so good. And in this game, we saw a little bit of both. It just was so wild how that ninth inning went because it started out with all this optimism of wow, Andrew Alvarez is killing it. And then just a few minutes later, because the inning moved quickly. All of a sudden, the Nance were on their second pitching change in the inning and the Nance are like on the brink of blowing this three nothing ninth inning lead. So just a lot of swings and emotions in that inning. I like how fired up love lady gets. Starts the wind, the one to do a lot so swing it a messy struck him out with a curve ball. That's his fourth strikeout and his second one to three in it. The Orioles go in order middle of the eighth, the Maneciz Capitol. It's the Nationals three. The Orioles nothing. I feel comfortable in the role. Whatever they need me for. I'm here for Andrew Alvarez. So you know, as we are recording this late night on Friday night, I keep checking the Nats Twitter communications to see if Alvarez has been the option back to Triple A Rochester as best as we can tell he has not been. I got to tell you, I want to see more of this guy. I know the final line was not great. Two runs, three innings. Like I said, he had tossed three scoreless innings with five strikeouts. And remember what he did in his other outing at the major league level here in this regular season. April 19th, the Nats three nothing win over the San Francisco Giants at Nationals Park. The Nats in this game used one pitcher beyond open or PJ Poole and bulk man Miles Michaelis and that man was Andrew Alvarez who tossed four and a third shutout innings with five strikeouts. And the Nats after the game announced having optioned him back to Rochester. But you know, we saw good stuff from him last season at the major league level. I think we've seen good stuff from him over two appearances at the major league level this season. And I would like to see more. I hope we do. I hope he doesn't get option back to Rochester here. And he stays up for a while. I'm going to guess that they're just going to wait the day and not make him go from the high of helping them win the game to going right back down and that they'll maybe announce it on Saturday because they could probably use now the reliever but who knows maybe they won't. Here's what I'll say about him. He's now pitched in seven major league games when you count last September and now two appearances this year. And in that time, he's got a 2.05 year a one one oh nine whip and it's across more than 30 innings. So it's not nothing. I understand that he doesn't have the profile of some of the more highly touted prospects in baseball. The stuff doesn't compete with those guys. But everywhere he's been and that includes the big leagues now. He's had success. And to me, you've got a franchise that's trying to figure out what they have for the future and maybe deep down they don't think Andrew Alvarez is a big part of that future. But what do you have to lose by putting him out there whether it's in this long relief roll or even as a starter. What do you have to lose? If it doesn't work out, you lose a few games. You aren't really expecting to win this year anyways. Now you found out once and for all. If he does continue to have success, maybe you have found something unexpected. Maybe there's something about this kid that works at every level that he's pitched at. And despite what the peripherals might say or just the eye test, he gets the job done. He gets out. He's effective. And I think he's gaining confidence every time he pitches up here and pitches well. So I agree I would definitely like to see more of him. Do I think we will? Probably not yet. It's probably going to be these similar situations where he gets called up if they need him for a specific game. But at some point, I'd just kind of like to know, is Andrew Alvarez have a chance to be for real or not? And the only way you find that out is by putting him out there. Yeah. And you know, whatever you want to say about his stuff, he's striking guys out. You know, you look at what he's done so far at the major league level seven games including five starts. He has 30 strikeouts in 30 and two thirds innings. That place, you know, so whether the stuff is electric or not, I don't know. But the strikeout rates pretty darn good when you look at the sample size that we have. What do you think is Zach Letel five shutout innings in this game? What was different for him? So a few things that stood out there. Number one, he threw his fastball way more than he had previously or certainly what his average was for the year. He threw 43% for seam fastballs. His season average was 25%. So that went way up. And the velocity was up to, it's not a lot, but it's a mile an hour from 91 to 92. And that may not sound like a lot. And the big leagues one mile an hour can make a big difference even though that may not seem like that big a deal. So he said he kind of had this epiphany and said, I'm just going back to what I've done for the last three years. Here's my fastball. I'm going to trust that I can throw it where I want to and get hitters out and not try to nibble around the edges as much. And you saw the performance. This was his best of the year. Now I will say, if you watch this game and I'm keeping scoreons, I keep track of these things. There were four fly outs to the warning track, even the base of the wall. He was a few inches away from this being a very different kind of outing. And so I do think you have to not just look at the results, but look at what the quality of contact was. It probably wasn't as dominant as that final pitching line would say. But for him, an important step forward, he's gradually showing that he can be better just like Miles Michaelis has as well. And you saw, you know, we talked about the ninth inning, butar bringing in the lefty to get Gunner Henderson in the fifth inning. He very easily could have pulled the tell at four and two thirds and brought in Alvarez to face Henderson. And he decided, you know what, let's tell his pitching really well here. And I want to show a little bit of faith in him in the veteran to get through that fifth inning. And he let him face Henderson. Henderson hits a rope off the right field wall for a double. Then he comes back and he gets a Taylor word to end the inning. So a display of faith from butara towards letel that maybe we have not seen from him. this point this year. The only other good outing from lettale with the nets had been on April 6th, a nine-six nets win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Nashville's Park, lettale in that game, one run five innings, six strikeouts. Beyond that game and what we had on Friday evening, it has been rough for lettale. There's no question about that, but it is funny that this outing came against the Orioles because when it comes to lettale and Miles Michael, as I've thought about a guy who was with the O's last season in Charlie Morton, a veteran like Michael, and lettale, Morton last season for the O's initially was horrible. So bad, the O's took him out of the rotation. He found his way back into the rotation and was a lot better, so much so that the O's actually ended up trading him, flipping him to Detroit and got something for him. Now he didn't do so well for Detroit, but that's not the point here. The idea is the O's were able to fix a veteran pitcher who was reeling, not just struggling, but reeling. So that's my hope with Michael listen lettale that, okay, these guys, especially in the case of lettale who's shown that he can be halfway decent the last few years, can this guy be fixed? Can that figure out a way to get at least lettale on track? And we'll see. We still need to see a lot more with both of these guys, but it is encouraging, at least somewhat, that Michael has been a bit better here lately. And we see what we saw from lettale on Friday and you're like, okay, there is still something there. As we saw after that outing against the Cardinals weeks ago now, it's one thing to have one good outing. You got to start to pile some one on top of the other and lettale obviously has not done that yet for the nets. Sure. The next one will be really important for him if you can keep this going or not and that should come against the Mets, I believe. I think though it does underscore why they don't just dump these guys at the first sign of trouble or second or third sign of trouble after a month into the season because they are looking at track record. I think especially in lettale's case of what he's been the last few years and saying if we just give him some time, we work with him, we might still be able to get something out of him that's useful and then maybe that does lead to a trade come July, but even if it doesn't, you're not just totally giving up on someone who has had recent success. This isn't the long go success. This is recent the last three seasons. So I understand why you wouldn't just totally give up on him at this point now. That's incumbent upon him and Michael is to now make the most of these opportunities and show that they can resemble their former selves lately better signs of that. That's pitching in this game. Nice job against the Orioles lineup that has not been great, but does have some guys who have been going well. Adley Rochman has mentioned has had a good season so far. He in this game, 0 for 5, the race, strikeouts, Peter Lanzo overall has not been great, but lately has been a lot better. He in this game, 0 for 4 with a strikeout. O'Neill circling in hard. He dives and he made the catch Abrams tags on eale hops up, throws home not in time. Abrams score standing and the nationals have taken a one and nothing weed on the shallow set fly the right that required on eale to make a diving play. When it came to the Nats offense in this three to win over the O's at Nats onals park on Friday evening. So this was one of those games in which the offense did just enough to win, but the Nats did win just three runs just six hits, which were home run a double and four singles. Go for three with runners in scoring position. The Nats did work three walks and Daedlin Lyle had three of the Nats six hits. He is in that starting left fielder and number five batter three for four with a two run homer, a double and a single Lyle in the Nats to run six. The one out to run homer to right field to put the Nats up three nothing giving him four home runs over the last four games. So the great success of Daedlin Lyle in Ohio carrying over to Washington DC and all of a sudden Daedlin Lyle who had underwhelming numbers. His numbers now are looking very good. His OPS is up to seven ninety eight. His on base percentage is up to three thirty five is slugging percentage is at four sixty three. And now very easily you would say he has been the Nats third best hitter, right? Abrams and wood are numbers one and two and whatever order you want to put him in. But Lyle is the clear number three in terms of production here that OPS. So just a tick under eight hundred off this recent surge. And he's basically done it in four days. I mean that's the amazing thing. He was showing signs before this but he's just taken off the last four days. He's ten for his last twenty one and most importantly six extra base hits three doubles and three homers. So he's slugging again like we saw from him last year. Now the thing we still have not seen remarkably is a triple eleven of them last year to tie the club record still looking first first one this year. I don't know about you but when he came up to bat for the final time of the eighth inning I'm thinking perfect opportunity. He's got the single to double the homer. Let's go for the triple complete the cycle finally get his first triple of season and he hit a weak ground ball to first base so that did not happen. But that's the only thing he hasn't done well here last several days. I love the way that he's hitting the ball with authority hitting it to the gaps and hitting it over the fence as well. This is as close as we've seen so far to the August September 2025 version of Dale and Lyle and I think it's important that we do see signs of that. Not that it felt like that was a total mirage. I think we all felt like there was some legitimacy to it but you like to see it again as we have here recently to just underscore the fact that this guy really does have the potential to be a very good majorly hitter. Very much so. The comp we made last September was this was the best September surge for a Nats player since Joey Minesis and Lyle is not Minesis from a standpoint of where each guy is at in his career but you did wonder as he was struggling to begin this season. Hey, you know, was there a fluke factor to what happened last September and you know the answer to that may well be no. What's funny about the thing with the triples is so many times there is a fluke factor with triples. You know, a lot of triples are fluky plays. I remember though us talking about all the triples by David and Lyle. They were not fluky triples. He was hitting for legitimate power and so that he has no triples here is a bit surprising because those seem to be like legit solid triples that he gave us last season so far. Zero triples this season. We'll see what comes of that. I also think this too with Lyle, it's tough what is happening with Dylan Cruz and Robert Hassel the third of those guys being a triple A even with Cruz doing a bit better lately. I think Lyle doing well does help to soften that blow just a bit because at least there is a young outfielder who you do feel good about here with the Nats beyond James Wooden. That's Dylan Lyle. It's not Dylan Cruz, but it is Dylan Lyle and you know if Cruz and or Hassel ever get going, you know, that'll make things even better. But for now, I think there is some solace you can take in the reality of hey, Dylan Lyle is a piece. He looked like a piece last season and right now he very much looks like a piece. Yeah, for all that talk we've had in the last year or so about oh my god and that's have so many great young outfielder's how are they going to find playing time for them all. Well, that's not really a problem at the moment. They've got their three guys who pretty much play every day and then some others at triple A who still have to earn their way back. So yeah, I agree. I think it was very nice to see that you have at least somebody else from that group besides James Wood who is proving himself to be a quality big league hitter. And I think his defense is getting a little better too. He was an underrated play but Blake Bittair went out of his way to mention it in this game. There's a deep drive in the seventh inning by Jackson off the left field wall and Lyle played it really well in a hop. Got it back in and held the runner Kobe Mayo to third and that allowed Andrew Alvarez to strike out Gunnar Henderson in the seventh to get out of that jam with runners on second and third. It's a small thing, but we've seen Lyle struggle with balls in the corner off the wall. That kind of stuff. If he doesn't play that as cleanly as he does, a run comes in and it could be a totally different ballgame. You know, we're learning about Blake Bittair. He loves to bring up defense in his post game sessions with you guys. And like you'll ask him or someone will ask him about, Hey, this guy did really well offensively and inevitably Bittair brings up that guy's defense. You could tell defense is a really big deal to Bittair. By the way, our defense played that was really, really good. I thought CJ played a great short stop. I thought two plays that might not get noticed is how quickly would he get the ball in from right field on a double on Henderson and then also how quickly Daling at the ball in from left field as well. I keep in those guys at third base. I think it's number one on his list above anything else. He gets more excited for good defense and he gets more upset than anything else over bad defense. All right. So the curse of 500 does it end on Saturday game two of this series, a 405 first pitch at Nationals Park. Cade Cavali versus Chris Bassett. We have been begging for some length from that starting pitching. Zach let tell did give the Nats five innings these days. I guess that does qualify as length to some extent. But the hope here would be that Cade Cavali can go out there and give the Nats. I mean, let's say six innings and I know that that's not easy. And you know, it's a bit unfair when you look at Cavali right still a developing pitcher to be, you know, eyeing him is like the guy who can come in and carry the load. But that is how things are set up here and with all that is being asked of Nats relief pitching right now, going to be very interesting to see how Cavali does on Saturday as the Nats attempt to end the streak. I sure hope they do it like I said because I'm kind of tired of the storyline now.
