Just curious. - Welcome to Just Curious Media. I'm Jason Connell. - And I'm Sal Rodriguez. - All right, Sal. You may have noticed that I did not insert the title or name of a show. - I did, you threw me for a loop there. I was like, what's he saying? - What's he doing? Am I still a Sal Rodriguez? - What's going on? What's happening here? - That's because we are doing a teaser episode for a new show and rather than do it multiple times, we're just gonna do a blanket episode and put it out on all of our shows. And the teaser is, Sal, go ahead. - It's for a new awesome show on Just Curious Media called Let's Talk Jaws. - That's right. - And of course, that references the iconic motion picture directed by Stephen Spielberg himself. - It sure does. A movie very warm and close to my heart. In fact, when people say, what's your favorite movie? Years ago, I just decided to stick with Jaws because I was a young kid and learned so much about filmmaking. And I'm like a nine year old looking at the movie and analyzing the movie and thinking, that's really a good movie in these characters. So there was just something about that movie at that time, made me look at movies differently. - Yeah. - And as I got older, he's been like, oh, the Godfather, Godfather, too, you can have that argument. But I just decided to stick with my roots, always have the one answer. And then you can talk about all the other movies that you love, but that's my go-to, Sal. And what's your go-to if someone asks you? And I'll just ask you right now, what's your favorite movie? - Oh my God, you're putting me on the spot, because I-- - On the spot. - It's hard to say, because there's all the genres. You know, you got your comedies, you got your-- - Towers. - Yeah, I would definitely say Jaws though. (laughing) I would definitely say Jaws. - No, you know why though, seriously though, because like you mentioned the Godfather, and the Godfather's iconic, of course, and there's a lot of iconic movies. But when it talks about, like we, you and I talk about the Karate Kid a lot, the legacy and the cultural impact of a movie like Karate Kid, and the legacy and the cultural impact of a movie like Jaws. So even if someone were to say, well, Jaws is not my favorite movie, you cannot deny the impact that has had on the culture at large, on cinema at large, on the careers of the players that were associated with it. So when you look at everything in its totality, you have to consider all that. So yeah, a movie like Jaws is definitely right up there in my personal top 10, for sure. - Great. - Well, it's fantastic. It's the gift that keeps on giving. It's a movie that is coming up on its, what anniversary is around the corner, so? - It is coming up on its 50th 50 anniversary. I think that is, is that the golden anniversary I think it is? Right, Silver's 25 and 50 is golden, I believe. - I might be golden, golden anniversary of Jaws. Yeah, very exciting. In fact, that's part of the reason for our excitement is we are riding into that. We are riding into the 50th anniversary. Very exciting. - Riding the wave, right in. So the synopsis for this show is an addictively fun podcast immersed in anything and everything related to Jaws. And that is so true. And so I have been thinking about Jaws for a while and it really kind of bubbled to the surface after I interviewed the writer of Jaws, Carl Gottlieb, for another show that we do. - The Braggadocious. - The Braggadocious, there. - But it was that interview last summer for the End of the Mystic podcast that kind of, oh, we had met Carl Gottlieb years ago at the Los Angeles United Film Festival. We honored him. We gave him a lifetime achievement award. He put his hand prints in part of the Vista Theater, now owned by Quentin Tarantino. So that was such an honor to honor a legend and we played Jaws in 35 millimeter. I mean, this is years ago. And so here I am. I'm talking to him again over a decade later, interviewing him and just thinking, oh my gosh, Sal, I love Let's Talk Cobra Kai. I can talk Karate Kate Cobra Kai all day long. Now there's a show Cobra Kai and that brings episodes and new content out and it makes it easier. But I thought I could talk about Jaws all the time too. So really to scratch that itch, we did two episodes. Jaws franchise volume one. Jaws franchise volume two on Let's Talk Movies. And we taught anything and everything Jaws and after I was done with that, I thought, do we do a volume three or do we just create a show? And we decided to create this, or I decided. And then you gave me your resume to be the co-host and your headshot, now I'm just gonna do it. I showed you my collectibles, I showed you my, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you have those in space, yeah. You probably had some Jaws collectibles behind you right now as we see. Well, over my left shoulder over there is Bruce. And I actually took him to Ventura. We had a day trip to Ventura and I took Bruce with me, took pictures of him in front of the water. I may take toys with me when I go and do stuff and might as well take Jaws when I go places. Yeah, so yeah, you had that. I needed a great co-host, no one better than you. So here we are, we didn't just start this thing today. No, we are five episodes and growing. We started with the trailer. I wanted to start with Jaws 1975. And by the way, let's talk Jaws isn't just the original. We will talk about these sequels. We will talk about spin-offs, but we're only five episodes in. We've really been focused on the original. First episode was Jaws 1975 trailer. And the idea was, it was the calm before the storm. What was happening and all of a sudden audiences in theaters saw this trailer and probably like, huh, what's this? Nothing was ever the same. And then the next episode we did the opening scene, which shows you what type of movie this is. There's going to be death and it's going to be gruesome and get ready. And it did. And when we play that, we talk about the scene. And then we talked about the shark is still working. The impact in legacy of Jaws, which is a famous documentary. We played it at the festival. That's when we met Carl. And others, we met Joe Alves. We met Greg Nicotero, who recreated Bruce. We met Michael Chapman, Reston Peece. Who was a camera operator on Jaws. We met some legends that night. You were on stage doing the Q&A. That's correct. And Jason, for the benefit of a new listener. Jason is referencing the United Film Festivals, of which Jason Connor was founder and director. And then he hired me, hired gun to be host moderator for the Los Angeles edition. We screened the shark is still working. Impact in legacy of Jaws. We did a Q&A. I met the filmmakers. It was a fantastic evening. One of the highlights of the LA United Film Fest. Oh my gosh. It was a real life like meta situation. The fact that we kept selling out. We had a blockbuster on our hands. We sell out, do another screening, sell out, do another screening. And I've never had that good problem at a film festival. I subsequently took the film to the other cities, because we did it in San Francisco, Chicago, New York, London, and Tulsa, my hometown. And the shark is still working, played all of the cities. Film makers were great. I wound up getting a PR credit because it was the world premiere in LA. And then the subsequent screenings helped build a buzz for the movie, which eventually wound up on the blue ray of Jaws. So I had a little teeny hand involved, but more or less, just such a love for Jaws. And it was amazing ride. So I was thinking, I need another show. We don't just do entertainment shows. I'm just curious, Media, but we have some. And I was like, well, if we're going to do another one. Let's have let's talk, Jaws. And here we are. We want to talk about it. So all of our fans from all of our other shows can go and subscribe, and listen, and rate, and just enjoy the show. It's five episodes in. So many more ahead. There's going to be fun, short episodes. Longer, we're going to talk about great scenes in some of the movies, how crazy it got with Jaws and 3D, or Jaws, the revenge, the fourth one with Michael Cain, where things just go nuts. Maybe Sal, in the midst of doing our show, there's some sort of resurgence of Jaws, which I think is coming. A reboot, a show, something has to be in the works at some point in time. Jason, I feel like a lot of the beginnings was when I texted you the picture of the Jaws socks in Hobby Lobby, I think, right? Wasn't that-- I was like, look, they have Jaws socks. And then since that point, I've just been looking around, kind of noticing. And there's little merchandise here and there. I saw a young guy with a T-shirt. Young guy in his 20s, wearing a Jaws T-shirt, like a few months ago, walking down the street. So yeah, there is a buzz in the air. And yeah, I want to remind everybody, especially the listeners of Let's Talk, Cobra Kai. Especially the listeners of Let's Talk, Cobra Kai. You know how the rabbit holes that we go down and Let's Talk, Cobra Kai. So imagine similar for something like Jaws, we are going to be all over the place. All over the place. In fact, we were lucky enough to get Nairagansett beer as a sponsor of the show. And Nairagansett beer is the beer that quint chugs and crushes the can. And I didn't know about this beer until I moved to New England. And I'm seeing Nairagansett beer everywhere. And Jaws merchandise or just imagery in all the liquor stores. I'm walking down the street here in Rhode Island. And I see a young kid in front of me. And he's got a Nairagansett beer shirt. And on the back, it's Jaws underneath. And there's a beer can on top where Chrissy would be. I'm like, are you kidding me? So now they're a sponsor. They gave us some great gear. We just did an episode about Nairagansett beer. Crush it like quint. Steven Spielberg went around Martha's Vineyard and would ask the fishermen what they were drinking. And they all said, Gansett. And that became Nairagansett logger. Good for them. Good on them, Sal. Lucky there that Spielberg did his research. So check out the show. You can find it on any and every platform. And Sal, they can definitely find it on just curious media. Tell them how. You want to visit justcuriousmedia.com, which is our main home page. You want to scroll down, see all of our shows they're listed. Click on the Let's Talk jaws. I always want to say button. But you don't say button, you? Logo button, whatever. For some reason I'm addicted to saying that. By the way, explain the logo, which is cool. The logo was great and officially designed by you. We have Let's Talk. I help. I help. OK, we have Let's Talk. And then we have jaws. Now, jaws is in the mouth of jaws himself. It's almost like he's biting the words. And then we have two hooks on the either side coming off the L of Let's and the K of Talk. And then in the very bottom, would you say on jaws is chin. Just curious. So yeah, the real nice Chrissy above. Oh, yeah, of course. And wait a second, though, just to be clear though, Jason, I just want to be clear on this. The model that is on the movie poster. Is that the actress herself? Or is that another person that got for the movie? No, what do a deep dive pun intended on the poster? But I always just reference it as Chrissy, the first kill, the opening scene. That sets the stage. I don't know if it was the actress from the movie posing. Probably not. And again, we'll have to delve into this. I don't believe it is. But that's who we're led to believe. That's that's yeah, that's her. That is the problem for the storm. That is a swimmer out there having a good time. And such a great opening scene, too. And I mean, it will be any, any guy, any heterosexual guy is like, OK, this is a phenomenal opening scene. This guy is going to have a great time with this gorgeous chick and then horror, absolute horror. So many more episodes to come. We're super excited, Sal. I love to get to, I don't even know, 50 episodes before we get to the anniversary itself. Maybe we'll get Carl back on. Maybe, who knows where a show can go? And that's a beautiful thing about a podcast. You can have a set idea. And it can evolve and morph. I mean, listen, let's talk movies is a spinoff of Let's Talk Cobra Kai. The pandemic happened. We were all on lockdown, quarantine. We weren't doing any episodes of Let's Talk Cobra Kai beyond the show, covering the show, scene by scene breakdowns of the episodes themselves. So it was like, well, now what? And I wanted to do more of these scene by scene breakdowns. So Let's Talk movies came into being-- well, it was shortly called Movie Matters. That's a whole other story. But I mean, it was a chance to talk about movies with friends. You're on lots of episodes. Other people are. And that shows morphed over time. It's not just seen by scene breakdowns of movies, which lead to be an hour and a half to our episodes. Yeah, those are there. But now it's like, talk about a trailer. Talk about this movie connection. And then, which I've already talked about today, we were talking about jaws enough to say, hey, this warrants its own show. So it's fun that you can be in the sandbox. It can morph into a new show. It's like, oh, yeah, there's enough meat on the bone here. Let's talk jaws deserves its own show. And we don't even know what episode a hundred could look like. I mean, hey, what if I got Spielberg on at some point in time? I mean, why not try? So John Williams-- Yes, Charlie Possible. Richard Drifus, who, by the way, is doing an event coming up. Richard Drifus, which you showed me-- I assumed it was on the West Coast. It's actually in New Jersey. There's a conversation with Richard Drifus with a jaws screening attached. So jaws is on the menu. Like, if I'm around, I'd love to go and just enjoy the event. And that's an episode talking about the event. If I got Richard Drifus for five minutes, I mean, that would just be too much to deal with. But it's those types of things. Going back and watching the movies. So I don't even think you've seen jaws the revenge yet. No, I have not. I have not. As a matter of fact, I saw the original as a kid. And only about-- no, with three weeks ago, saw jaws as a grown man. I saw it only about three weeks ago. So no, I have not seen the sequel and the 3D-- Yeah, you probably don't remember the second one that much, either. It's actually a pretty good sequel. Really was a sequel. OK, I'll check it. I mean, it's not the original, but you have Shider coming back. You have Lorraine Gary coming back. You have Carl Gottlieb writes it. So it's not-- and it has the greatest tagline in movie history, I would say. What was that one? Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water. Oh, that was the second one. That was the sequel. When you think about the context. Just when you thought it was safe. Exactly. It's not safe. It's a great takeaway. And it's the kids and the kids are abandoned. And there's real scares. There's good moments. But you can't put it next to jaws. No, it's not going to be as strong. But it's a really good film. Well, then it just starts to get further removed. But they're fun. More talking points. Yeah, definitely. Let's have Dennis Quaid on and talk about the third one. Well, I'd like to get a pair of those 3D glasses. I would imagine that people probably got their 3D glasses from local 7/11s or places like that. I got mine at the theater. I saw it at the Annex 7. And I think it was still the Annex 3, when I saw it. And I was a kid, put them on. But I think you could keep them back then. They would give you the 3D glasses. But it wasn't like your hand to back in now the more expensive glasses. The plastic was with your hand back in the bucket. Yeah, back then. But then I'm thinking that when it made its way to cable TV, in our local area, we had two cable providers, one called on TV. And the other was called select TV. And this is pre HBO era here. This is pre cinematics era. And I remember I think there was a time where you can get these 3D glasses at places because you're going to want to watch "Jaws 3" on your television. Sound Rodriguez saw "Jaws 3D" in 2D. I might have seen "Jaws 3" through my neighbor's fence. Like I saw "Star Wars". There he goes. Our neighbor saw "Star Wars" picking through the fence. So yeah, I might have seen it that way. No sound. No sound. Just like, oh my god, the neighbors are watching "Jaws 3". I thought "Jaws" was a silent film. What the heck? I didn't even realize. Yeah. And you know, I think one of the most exciting things is that 50th anniversary coming up. So we're going to be seeing a snowball. You and I will be experiencing a snowball. Everyone out there, merchandise, interviews, publicity. Probably some press tours, I would imagine. Special DVD releases or streaming releases. There's going to be a lot of a snowball effect as we approach 2025. And I really want to go to Martha's Vineyard, which is not too far from me now. Time with the 50th anniversary are just before then because I've never been. It's a ferry ride away. I guess you could fly there too. But there's tours you can do and believe you me. After I do this, those are episodes. Or that's an episode. Jason at Amity, just taking it in. We'll do some live remote recording and then we'll go in studio and I'll just talk about it. I challenge you Jason to go into the water at Martha's Vineyard. To the knee? Is that good enough? Just to the knee case. Well, it's not safe, but hey, do it anyway. Do it for the show. All right, for the show. For the show I'll do it. Do it for let's talk to us. So that's it. We hope you enjoy it. Check it out. Subscribe, rate, review, enjoy it. Sal. Until next time.
