The podcast features a lively, humorous discussion among friends centered around late-night TV, comedy, and personal anecdotes. They celebrate the creative energy of SNL, especially a standout sketch featuring Elton John and Nick Cage in a fictional "Laser Cats" musical, which they praise for its absurdity and clever execution. The group reflects on their favorite late-night swag bags, with Seth highlighting Kimmel’s hat, and shares behind-the-scenes insights, including Elton John’s initial hesitation about the sketches and the team’s confidence in the material. A running joke about the fictional "getting the cage" segment is explored, with the group noting its comedic potential and the contrast between celebrity guests and the show’s low-key humor. They also discuss personal interests, including a son’s passion for Magic: The Gathering, a new AI project called "Claude" focused on comedy, and plans for Comic Con. The conversation is filled with self-deprecating humor, nostalgic references, and heartfelt appreciation for the shared experience of creating and watching comedy. The episode blends heartfelt moments with absurdity, emphasizing the joy and camaraderie found in sketch comedy, and ends with a celebration of the show’s creative spirit and the team’s enduring bond.
Oh, this guy's representing I'm representing for the late night hosts. Seth has come in hot with the Jimmy Kimmel live hat because he will have us on. I was on Jimmy Kimmel this way. No, I saw a photo. I didn't get to watch it. You guys were real cute little swag bag in your suits. Well, it's interesting. No, Seth, because for me when I get those swag bags, I'd give them immediately to my family. I'm going to say something. Yeah, it's a really good hat. And I think that we have the best t-shirt as far as the swag bag biz goes in late night. And I think Kimmel has the best hat. Okay, we get it. You guys all get along. It's not like the 80s. You all know how strength we're spied, dude. You guys are well-adjusted. Do you remember when Leno went on Letterman and then his swag bag had a poisonous cobra in it? No Carter. Oh, no, no Carter story in his book. Speaking of Letterman-ish, right out of the gate, I got a, you're eligible for an advanced viewing of the Nor McDonnell documentary on Netflix. Ooh, very exciting. I popped it on. It's Judd. And it's fantastic, obviously. He did one for Maria Banford, too, that I was super excited to check it. Yeah, I saw that one, too. They're both so good. It's so wonderful that Judd is like, no, fuck that. Comedy. Every time over and over and over. But it's weird that deep down he hates comedy. Yeah. Like it's just odd that like you, like I would never call him like a comedy person. Right. Oh, interesting. Say more about that. It's like, it's exposure therapy. He's afraid of comedians. And so his therapist said you should make, exactly make 100 documentaries. The thing about Judd is like he basically, his brain could already like produce documentaries about 100 comedians. Like his entire youth is almost like he was building up to this moment that he had to also go through this long winding trail of being like this incredibly accomplished writer and director of comedy. But like he's meant to celebrate other comedians. And he does. He already knows all the clips to pull. Yeah. He's like he's like, Claude for comedy documentaries. Yeah, that's funny. And you know, thank you for saying it like that shout out Claude. Seth rocks. Oh, thank god. I didn't get my own drop. I didn't get my own drop last week. Andy. And so I was pretty upset. Now you do. Yeah. And by the way, I mean, Claude CLOD. That is a new AI that we the four of us are working on. And it's just comedy stuff. So it's just like a clot of like dirt. It's just sarcastic answers. I thought you met Claude the musician that Paul Red was in the video of. Oh yeah, right. There you go. Gentlemen, so nice to see you. Where are you, Seth? New background. New background. I am in the office of the mountain biking outfitter that I just dropped my kids off and they're riding on trails while I'm doing a podcast. And is that why you're just like a mountain biker as well? Yeah. Also, I was told by my son. He was like, how long do you have to do the podcast? I'm like, he usually takes an hour. He's like, all right. Usually the rest of the time studying are the rules of magic, the gathering. Oh, he just bought a pack of magic, the gathering cards. And now he subs. And by the way, no, just immediately obsessed. He assigned to that to you. Wait, are you going to learn it? Because I had to learn Pokemon and I did not want to. So I mean, yeah, because I love my son, I'm going to, I'm going to do it real quick. Wayne Brady has an improv podcast and Ben Schwartz was the guest and Wayne Brady's phone rang and his ring tone was like a boss. No way. That's great. And then Ben Schwartz gave a shout out to you, Bjorn, because I guess he wrote a script that you're involved with. Yeah, we're working out right now. Hopefully it happens. I'm very excited about it, but it was it was very authentic and fun. Oh, there's a new Greg Chun intro. Should we play that before we get too far into this? Sure. Yeah. Transition. That's not really good. I had shake up your head. Are they good though? It was especially good because we all thought it was the new jingle, but it's really nice. That's you shook your head disappointed and they went really good. That's my favorite set reaction. You have to because again, I mean, I do think an outcome where I'm shaking my head is also me being like, that's good times. Like a good burn on me. Also, like, just I think that you're again, all three of you, kings of editing, right? Like, your ability to like get something. And so the fact that you're him is doing it live, like perfectly timed drops. Oh, my man's very musical. Ivory's, but keeping them straight. I mean, you know, he's got multiple drops now and he really. The problem with doing this is that I have to keep my finger on the button the entire time. There's a way. The problem is that you the literally by far the worst listener on the pod is now added another layer that's not listening. Sit rocks. Jesus Christ. All right, clear clear the airspace for me or can we please hear the new Greg Chan intro? Transition. I'll stop. I'll stop. Will you? I don't know. Maybe I don't know. That's a crazy part. Holy grill of a sweet, healthy, inspiring tale of Andy Ikeva and your even longer a cold. They were sadly my ears born in every instant. I was also born. They were trying to think it's cool to bad. No one else fucking cares. That went to school and got his improv, all his talent wouldn't be unknown for long. Then he'd hear the SNL siren song. Holy is a real job too, you guys. Oh, Greg Chan. Hey, Greg Chan, it's thank you, Greg. Wow. Just dropping that on us. We're getting 10 times harder on the podcast than the Four Holes. Yeah, how do you even respond to that? I guess just love and blessings to you, Greg. Just love and bless it. My heart racing, like a genuine two. And by the way, he also did these drops too. Transition. No, he didn't. It sounded like you weren't. No, he did the music part, believe me, I mean, yeah, that's why I was actually going to ask you where you found such a perfect way. Did you go to the Greg Chan shop and ask for the Hanobar Barbera? We've been scheming to the two of us. Oh my gosh. I don't know why I feel about Yoram putting more on Greg Chan's plate. I like that Yoramah second ago is like, you know, he's got a real job. Also, he's a little late on my drops. Oh yeah, so if you didn't know, Yoramah is not afraid to ask favors of anyone at any time. None of us are, but I'm the worst. Yoram, just hit me up. Wait, was it this weekend? Yoram, have you gone? What the besakami? No. Comic Con. Oh, yes, I'm going to go. I'm going to go on Sunday. Next week, Keenan and I think some other SNL folks are going to be there. Why? I don't know. Yoramah hit me up for if I can help him get into Comic Con. Here's the reason. It's quite expensive and then I'm worried that I'm going to take my kids and they're going to be like, I want to get out of here. It'll be like 20 minutes and I'll have spent like, oh, you're taking your kids. That's the answer. Yeah. But then Louie from SNL, the incredible, Emmy-winning makeup artist, is doing a panel at Comic Con. Oh my God. Oh, that's awesome. Well, we've all gone before, but we've always gone as like, you get rushed in the back, you talk for like 40 minutes and you don't actually get to see anything. Yeah. So this will be the first time I'm excited about it. That's San Diego Comic Con. You've been to New York Comic Con? No, I've never been. I've never been to any Comic Con. They get new as a thing. It's not so San Diego, but it's impressive in its scope and breadth. Are you going to go this year? I'm not going to go. Why? I think probably just because it's a waking nightmare, is that the reason why I said that? But you could go in an outfit and be anonymous. That's true. All right. Yorms, Thorns, Keeves, Peeves. What about Berg's Ergs? I don't mind that. Yeah, it's present. Just a U.S. or is that Ergs? That's great. It's all great stuff. Oh, I guess sorry. I was thinking of Ergs like the like unit of power. I've got the Erg to punch you in the face right now. Oh, I think man. Like 12 Ergs equals of, you know, a flurger or something like that. Yeah. In science, an Erg is a centimeter gram second unit of work or energy. Oh my god. I mean anytime Andy knows that three-letter word, which you can't use in spelling, because I'm so impressed. Was that an Oppenheimer, maybe? Well, it sometimes is in the Crossword Puzzle or the Mini. Oh, right, right. My god, it's 12,000 Ergs. That bomb is lethal. It was called out that a key of a santi gold that a key of it was santi gold. Yeah, but were you saying santi gold? Did I say rungs? Somebody said you were saying it's santi gold like Bill Hader pronounces santi claws in the Dornan SNL sketch. But I was saying santi gold. Yeah, but maybe I said the wrong ones. It's possible. No. There was a rumor for a while that Blink 182 was named after how many times they say the word fuck in Scarface, and then this

So you can switch it out depending on the weather. - Yeah. - There's a lot to watch in this episode. It's Elton John, there's a laser cat. - So just to bring this back while you talk, just in the background, I'm just gonna have this going. - It's quite a week with Elton John. And there's quite a few things to watch in this episode. There's an ESPN classic. There's a Lawrence Weldinger. There's a Gitnikage, which is a really special update feature. There's a Knights of the Roundtable sketch which I look forward to talking about. And so much more on today's Lonely Island in session. (laughing) - It was really good. - Good timing. - You nailed it, you dropped the hammer right at the spillout. - Speaking of Oppenheimer, we had Florence Pugh of Oppenheimer on my show this week. - Oh nice. - I'm talking about East of Eden and shout it out. The fact that she's in 42.6. She did a really very informative job. - Hey, somebody sent in a photo and said that they were in Cleveland at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the shy Ronnie Costume is prominently displayed right now at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. - That's not real. - The photo is, it's a really, the photo is fantastic. - Can you share it? - Can we drop the photo into the chat? I thought it was that, 'cause there's that big SNL exhibit now, right in Texas somewhere? - No, at the SNL exhibit, they have a Led Zeppelin. - That makes sense. - Oh, that makes sense. - Oh, it's just a big mix. - I think that got shipped as it was a mix up. - Yeah, they got Robert and they were like, "Well, it's here. Mine's gonna put it up." (laughing) - That's the Cleveland Rock and Roll Museum. That's much more impressive. Gosh. - National Treasure 71 is when they steal the Shai Ronnie costume. (laughing) - We is Jake Gyllenhaal, 'cause we haven't talked about getting the cage with other actors. Is Jake Gyllenhaal the first time you did it with another actor? - I haven't the foggiest, but there's a strong chance. - What movie had he done that you thought should be a Nicholas Cage movie? - Well, I believe the way these came to be was like people are in town doing press and we snatch 'em. - Right, but was he doing like Prince of Persia? And you're like, "How am I not in that?" - It could be Prince of Persia. It could have been, there was that cool like time one where he's on a train. - Oh yeah, that one's great. - Oh yeah, time train. - Time train. - You love time train. - It's definitely not all time train. It's a great movie and it's not great that none of us can remember it, but time train for lack of a better title is a great movie. - Yeah. - Yeah, he goes back and he steals the Led Zeppelin outfit and then he-- - And I'm sure hundreds of people who have done it for years appreciate us calling it time train. - It's called Source Code. - Exactly your month. - I don't know, I was in a guest train of time. - Source Code is genuinely a great movie. So somebody wrote this note to us. I remember you guys on Preston and Steve in Philly. You were hyping up Preston in the promo. You made this big long rant about how cool he was. And then the bit was that Steve was an afterthought. So it feels very, you know, like Jose and Mark from the Bash Brothers. I remember feeling some sympathy for Steve as he is the pop culture guru of the show and did all the research on you guys for the interview. And then you enter the studio and greet him with these semi-emasculating stings. - Semi. - I wonder if the person who wrote Muglis was behind this. - Yeah. - Oh wow, we all never know. - Pun intended on stings 'cause they're, you know, they sting and they're stings. And to this day, I'm a bit troubled by it, but don't worry, I have largely moved past it. Thank you to whoever wrote this great note. Okay, so then they found or somebody else found this entire page that has a 30 minute, it's our entire interview. I scanned through it right before we got on. So it's gonna just be us talking. Ready? Here we go. - So we just made a bunch of drops and we wanted to do. So which one should he play for? - I think just the first one. - Okay, play number one, see if this would fit. The two 10 STs in Philadelphia. - Yeah, we're looking at you guys now. - No, no. - We can't see you guys. - Let's see how we answered the names. - So we thought these guys probably tan. - No. - No. - No. - Yeah, so let's just skip to the fifth one. - All right, fifth one. - All right, let's go. - You want to do the fifth one? - Yeah, let's see how we're going to do the fifth one. - All right, here we go. - You're name with Pupu Pupu Pupreston, the coolest DJ in Philadelphia. - And Steve. Here we go. - You're hanging with Preston. - And Steve, the most charming and permissed US man in Philadelphia. - God, your women, he's known to mix Viagra and cocaine. - But don't worry ladies, he's got a defibrillator in his back back. (laughing) - That seems like a good job. - Yeah, yeah. - You know what I mean? - I don't know if that is remotely true. We're going to act as if it is true. - Okay, we could make it longer if you need it. - Yeah, we need it to be like another 20 seconds. - That's the problem with those things. We're not informative enough. - Yeah. - The only inaccurate thing is Steve actually uses meth, not cocaine. - Oh, gosh, I got shit. - We might be able to get away with it. - We're so close. - But the tanning thing I laugh at because I often say I'm what powder would look like had he not turned into lightning at the end of the movie. (audience laughing) - I don't think that will work. - Four end with it. - Four end with it. - Four end with it. - Like the dragon wagon. - Go to the very end, go to the tag. - Good news from West London this evening. The fire-breathing dragon that terrorized our city has been killed. The deadly beast was vanquished by pop star Sting, who, and I'm putting this as delicately as I can, gizzed all over it. (audience laughing) Until it died. (audience laughing) We now return to fancy a jar. Do you wear, oh dear. Deirdery has just broken a large jar. Where'd we get the right deals? (audience laughing) - Stuck it. - Oh my god. - Good time. - So it was really good. - Britain stuck it. - I will say this show has a very nice shape to it because it was a big deal. They don't drop themselves. Tom Hanks was on the scene, which is a very nice, I think, a lorn idea to, when you have a musical guest, who's also the host, have another, you know, all-time host on standby for sketches.
But it opened with Lawrence Welk, so no political cold open. And then a really good monologue that Malinian and Simon Rich wrote. And then he has been classic and then Knights of the Realm. It was just like immediately the shape of the show was just good times to start, to finish. And it was a winner. I should also say one of the things I remember about this week that is one of my favorite SNL memories. I got a call Wednesday morning that Elton John wanted to talk to somebody because he was reading the sketches and he did not think they were good. And I was there and it was like a real like as head writer can you go in and tell him everything, you know, just calm them down. And the thing I'll say about this is I say it was like real appreciation for like the risk Elton John took to host us at Elton John had not been on the precipice of like having a ban show for like 30 years. There was no like Elton John backstage. I'm not saying his shows weren't incredibly hard or taxing or require a great skill, but it wasn't like he's like, oh, I hope Rocketman works right. He had built a library of material so that he was absolutely immune to bombing. And I think he was sitting in a room about to do sketch comedy for the first time on Wednesday morning. And again, 50 sketches, hopefully everybody who listens to this podcast at this point knows a lot of the sketches are bad written by good people who tried really hard their bad sketches. If you've never done sketch comedy before and you're reading through everything, you are probably just seeing the ones that are bad and you're like, what the fuck have I got myself in? Yeah, you forget like by the time it all gets cut down, you just need like five or six. Yes. So absolutely no judgment. I would have felt if not the exact same worst than Elton John felt that morning, but he was not feeling good. And I walked in and he was trying to think he was like basically to paraphrase is like, it's not funny. None of this is funny. This is a disaster. And I had to say, well, look, if it doesn't work in the table, you know, we're just going to start over, which of course, also everybody should know, not case a ball chase lie. That's good producing. It's good. I then walked out and he had like, I remember he had like two sticks, but six security guards who would like look like, like just like a couple of British bulldogs. And one of them said to me, like, don't worry, love, he's like this all the time. Like some of her, some version of like, he's not going to let you down. Yeah. And then I remember we went out probably of memory, memory is not serving here, but I'm guessing maybe Lawrence Welk was first at the table. Kristen wakes super funny. Everybody's laughing. And then Malini and Simon wrote a really funny monologue. No bells and whistles, just him doing like an old school monologue that was full of jokes. And he started reading it and he just started crushing. And by the end of the monologue at the table, like we were often running, he was having the best week. And he never saw that panic again or any doubt again. And he talked about, as he and David Frenish had just had a baby and he was talking how it takes after them because it's rejecting the breast. And I remember him telling that at the table and it getting both that great table laugh, but also a big lawn laugh. Yeah, but it was, it was that crazy thing of just like, Oh, right, when you're like an icon, it's just a crazy, I mean, again, we're all the beneficiaries of his choice, which is like, Oh, yeah, I'll host SNL and then like, but again, like it's so funny to realize that there's a moment where it's like, Wait, what did I say yesterday? Yeah, you can only fuck up your status, you know, or it goes great and you're like, cool, another one. Yeah. Then the real kuda grout is that he shows up for laser cats. Oh, wait, we're going to do getting the cage first. Yeah. Do we want to look at some getting the cage? Let's just watch getting the cage for the magic of it. This is the first celebs getting the cage. Yes. Confirmed. So this is the first getting the cage. So remind me, well, no, because I had done it once on update. Hadn't I? Solo. But not as getting the cage. No. Sorry. Correct. I just came on as a feature. It has Nick Cage. So this is a new dish. So hopefully we'll find out in your intro here because you would probably say a new segment, right? Yeah, let's see. And now it's time for getting the cage. A new segment where actor Nicholas Cage sits down with a fellow Thesbian to discuss the craft and their recent work. Please welcome Nicholas Cage and Jake Gyllenhaal. So that's a surprise to everybody that Jake's there. It's so good. Seth, before we start, let me just say that I'm thrilled to be here with one of my acting heroes, Mr. Nicholas Cage. Oh, that's very kind of you, Jake. And now that I have you here, let's begin with a question about your new movie, Source Code. Yep. Source Code, yeah. It's about a soldier who sent back in time to stop a terrorist attack. That's right. So my question is, how am I not in that movie? What? And I was both of the classic elements of a Nick Cage movie. One, it combines time travel with screaming. Two, I'm told the actors were paid. Look, Mr. Cage, I'm sorry you were in Source Code, but maybe you were too busy. No, no. I've made two movies a month for the last five years. I'm never too busy to turn out another block duster. I'm sorry. Did you say block duster? The age of the blockbuster is over Seth. It's covered in dust. Pires of the Caribbean is a blockbuster. I don't have time to argue with you, Seth. If I don't finish my segment, people will die. That's not true. That is not true. Prove me wrong, Seth, and you. You lack the key quality of being a film star, a hairline that's constantly moving up and down your skull. Almost as if each individual follicles on a spring that reacts to anger. OK, I'll work that out. I can tell you're confused by me. I want an Oscar, that's my mystique. Am I a genius or a madman? Well, the answer is a madman. See, I thought you were going to say a little of both. No, not the case. All madman, the new, even now as I break your fricking stomach face. You find yourself compelled by me. You can't take your eyes off my strange skin and lips that dance in quiver like banana slugs, doused in salt. Look, Mr. Cage, I'm sorry that you were in in source code, OK? But you're doing fine, man. You're in every movie. You're like the white Samuel Jackson. That's high praise. But don't worry about me. I've got big plans. Oh, yeah, what are you going to do next? I'm going to have sex with the declaration of independence. Nick Cage and Jake Dillon are going to play. That was pretty close, as well. I mean, talk about not overstaying your welcome. Yeah, that was the right to the point. I forgot about the doubling down on and you, like weirdly subtly my favorite part of it. Also, it shows an incredible growth of you, Andy, because I feel like that's you doing a great impression with another A-list movie star, and it's half the length as the kid who just will go. Well, Joe's wrote those. That's true. So this was you, Mulaney Klein? I think at this point it might have just been me and Klein. Yeah. And again, I mean, Mulaney and whoever else, if it was at the table, sometimes we could punch up. Yeah. It was a fun thing to pitch on, obviously. Later down the line, we would get a lot, like we got into this other thing, we'll get to it eventually. There's lines in it about Nick Cage saying he has the skin of like a cigar store Indian or something. Yeah. Like that's Mulaney. Me and Klein would never have thought of that line. But I will say the sort of like poetic adjacent nature of some of it is part of I forgot how much time we put into that, you know, the specificity of the phrase. It's also this episode is a real homage to hosts, but also shout out to Jake Johan Hall who like knows his assignment. Yes. And also like correctly stays very reverent towards the real Nick Cage within the text. But like the only fun of him showing up is he gets to be on SNL while you is Nick Cage, like just lays into it. Say crazy shit. Yeah. I mean, he doesn't get to, he doesn't get to parry back. He gets his laugh on white Sam Jackson. Yeah. I was particularly impressed with your abilities. He gets very close to his face. Andy. That goes. You're like right up in his grill. And I mean, I wonder if I had a second set of cards in order to do that. Otherwise, I would have had to memorize it, which doesn't sound like me. This is very exciting as we, you know, because again, we're closing in, obviously, on our last shorts. But to know there's so many getting the cages ahead of us, there's five more, Andy. Can you remember the other five that are coming? I know I did judo law, correct. When I hosted, I think Paul Rudd, correct. So that means there's three more. Bradley Cooper. Yeah. Liam Neeson. Yeah. And then you got it. And then Nick Cage. That's what was Nick Cage that I was going to have. Oh, my God. Yeah. Of course. Oh, I thought you were in your head. You knew it. No, no, no. It was blank. You were going to go. Yeah. I did remember. So thank you all, gentlemen. It's really good, Andy.
fun. And I'm so happy we get to watch more of them. I've always said like nothing was more joyous than walking in on you and client while you were working on them. We definitely had fun doing it. Yeah. And if we do get a voice note from client, we could probably pop it right here. Here's the takeaway from get in the cage for me. Andy Sandberg is our generations James Joyce. He is our Vladimir Nabakov, banana slugs, doused and salt, block duster. These things just pour out of him. People don't understand. And I'm not even being sarcastic. I actually sincerely mean this that his his facility with language with, you know, is also maybe reflected in his him on the spelling bee is on parallel and that that you may not know from the outside. But I know it. So you are basically saying like you probably heard because sometimes the talent department would be like, hey, Jake Gyllenhaal's in town. Yeah. Like how did the idea for getting a cage? Well, he had done a laser catch with us in the past. Right. And we had had a great time with him. Yes. And I believe our publicist Kerry also represented him. So I think that we probably just said she was like, come on, dude. And he'd also was in Iran so far if you recall. But I don't think my recollection is we were like, how do we guarantee that we get on update and don't get cut? It's not smart. Bays and Seth. Yes. How do we make it that Bays can't? The Iron Curtain, as we call it. He's specifically a not Seth because I know Seth always was rooting for me. And he always wanted me on the Berlin wall. Bays was the one who fucked me. The Bayslin wall. Yeah. The Bayslin wall. Hey, buddy. So your thing has nothing to do with politics or current events. How do we bridge of spies into stasi territory? Bases territory. So it killed it dress and everyone was laughing so hard that they actually said they experienced joy on a level they never felt before. But it didn't have anything to do with politics or current events. Seth loved it, but I have to cut it. Yeah. That was every week. This is, by the way, every time we burn Bays for being the grim reaper of Andy's update features, he does come to my office at late night and remind me that he had no power. Well, that's the joke. Like the story. I know it was him. I know it was you, Bays. Anyway, I'm dirt taker. We literally were like, how do we do this in a way where they can't cut us and the answer was get a celebrity guest. Yeah. And then we asked the talent department who's in town. Right. Who's who's out promoting? Yeah. And they were like, Oh, Jill and Hall, and clearly he wanted to get a plug in for source code. Yeah. He gets to come be honest and hell and hang out, go to the party. You're like, who's already in here and make up? 11 30 on a Saturday. Yeah, it's Jake for you. Wait, is every guest on getting the cage minus Niko's cage have as few lines as Jake did? Yeah. We're going to find out. Well, let's watch him all then. Jonathan can do this statistics for us once we get through the mall of how many lines each one of them were allowed to have. Please Jonathan do it. I'm just signing Jonathan up for things. Okay. He's fine with it. That's he, he's a, that's guy. He loves it. He gets off that guy. He gets off. He chooses on it more than staying on drag. Okay. So musical laser cats. Yeah. So it's April 2nd, 2011. My child is, you know, four months old. So me and your mom are back. We're back. We don't know why that makes it that yorms back, but I'm back. Well, laser cats. He got to be back for laser cats. This is the 2nd to last laser cats. Correct. Yeah, laser cats. Six. Dude, what a fucking run. Oh my god. Yeah. Like Sigourney and James Cameron into Elton John and then the last one is fucking Spielberg. Yeah, we have Steve Martin and Christopher Logan. Like, it's not. It's so awesome to put people in that level of stupidity is very dream. And this was Elton showed up wanting to do it, right? That I don't remember that. I'm making that up. I can't. I think we were probably like, how do we make a laser cats that has a different vibe to it and doing it as a musical was probably what we came to. It made sense for him, you know, well, we like taking people that are fancy and making them do laser cats. Right. Yeah. Great observation, yorm. What? It made sense for him. Why does he do music stuff? He's got a decent voice. Yorm pretending to be normal is maybe my favorite. Yorm. And Yorm, by the way, Yorm did. It wasn't because Yorm had forgotten that he was a musician as well. He thought he was just an actor doing SNL and it wasn't until music rehearsed on Thursday that he was like, whoa, he's like, oh, this guy's got the goods. I think we found our musical laser cats. We should do a laser cat. It's whenever, I mean, edit on I think you should leave. And then these are the ones that get stuck in my head. It's whenever Tim is doing the lines that are like the setup of a normal person like him getting in bed with a sessly strong being like, oh, the kids had such a fun day. They did art. Like the kids did amazing art today. It's always the least believable when it's supposed to just be like an average guy just doing normal. He's also like, he always plays guys who are like delighted by simple pleasures. It's really amazing. All right, should we just watch this? All right, so it rolled right out of out of the night to the realm, right out of fancy a jar, do you? So here we go. Hey, Lauren, thanks for meeting with me. I think you're going to love this idea. Of course, Tom. What's up? What is hot right now? Musicals. Glee, Spider-Man, the works. And what do I love? We're war two. Space. So what if we combine them and made one super musical set in outer space? Sounds great. What's it about? Laser cats. Tom, why are you doing this? They've taken something more. Something very valuable to me. All right, so yeah, you're holding Tom Hanks hostage. Take something very valuable. What's the reveal, guys? Wilson. Yeah, they're holding a knife to Wilson's head. What is he like more in the world? Stab it also really assuming everyone knows all the backstory of laser cats and that people have seen them all. Well, that's a six one. That's fine. Yeah. One a year. But you get a lot of whoops, though, you know, from the audience. By the way, it's the right way to play it is to not dumb it down and re-explain it. I enjoyed it. Yeah. Interesting joke with the World War Two space, because it's just kind of true. There's always two main things. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's good. It's going to love some small or two. So we did a great job. No, I don't know. It's not really a joke. I forgot about that. The eyes from the famous cats and the word cats is in the cat's font. What is the name of that font, though, the like eight bit? You just eight bit, right? That laser. Yeah, the one that just looks really like LED, like an old ticker almost like a digital. And then the worst font at the bottom for the musical. I do want to maybe say one thing. There are maybe incorrect me if I'm wrong here, guys. Yeah. Few people on earth who know less about musicals. That's a really important distinction. Yes. This is not like, Oh, Lynn is doing it and he knows every single inside joke about every musical ever written. That's like three dumb shits who like rap who don't know anything. At this point, our knowledge about cats is limited to the poster. The font. Yeah. Your miles behind, for example, like Sedacus, Terran Killam, like the amount of people that are working at the show. We have a lady. The starting one there told me that when that he used to live in Vegas doing improv or something and that he would listen to the rent soundtrack on his headphones when he would go to work at the show. He did it at the show. He was always a little shocking part. He would come in and I'm in basketball shorts with a basketball under his arm, you know, his Nike dunks, big fat like beats by Dre headphones, just looking like a guy. Yeah. Straight off the subway that he's definitely listening to hip-hop. And then you go, what do you got in there? And then he would like tilt the headphone out so I could hear it and be like, five thousand seventy. What the fuck is happening? He contains multitudes. Yeah. From the line of Tom Hanks. Oh, I definitely, I definitely remember photoshopping that. A very classic URM Photoshop ripped Tom Hanks photo that URM clearly did. So we're using forced perspective. I remember there was, this is back when magazines exist and there was every magazine would be in the writer's room so that you could thumb through it for like topical like what's going on. And there was a swimsuit edition and we just ripped out who happens to be Chrissy Teigen, right, in hindsight. But she was anonymous to us at the time. Correct. But then we met her years later and she was married to John Legend. And she was like, you put me in that thing and we were like, oh shit, we didn't even know. Exactly. And so it's a ripped out magazine size cut out of her and we're holding it close to the lens and then Andy's like 10 feet away pretending to kiss this piece of paper. Also, Bill Hader by his own admission does not think he can sing.
So just doing this in general as a premise is already so funny to us that should be noted. But these are supposed to be two children who sound like kids anyway. I'm not saying I'm singing really well or something, but I'm just saying like he considers me to be very musical compared to himself. I like though that and it's a good lesson to any young sketch performer out there. He's trying his hardest. And that's what he's all about. [Music] It's designed to work on humans. I just don't have the nerve. Believe in yourself, Kimo Sabe. It'll all work out. Believe in yourself. He's blew it up. Get a hologram message from Bates. All right, so Fred is the hologram. We'll go back in. But again, always love about laser cats. You guys lay something in immediately that you know we're going to pay off the shrink ray gun. It does not work. It blows up the watermelon instead of shrinking it. So that is something we know. It's supposed to work on humans and he does not have the guts to try. And his advice is believe in yourself. I don't think that's going to solve it. I also love any like little dumb like Seinfeld S little transition that we made on these little like it goes perprenor. It's like what it's time for the hologram to appear so wack. Pretty pretty good effect on the Hollywood. I was going to say hologram looks good. It's almost tedious. [Music] [Music] So the back guy's name is DRAWS. The space jam poster where we just put Elton John face taped onto a dinosaur's body. And that there's a lot of comedy here from as you guys say whitehead black body. This is our second head on a buff body that doesn't belong to them. I will I will also say that like the DRAWS setup is really enjoyable for what comes with it. It seems like a classic name for a bad guy. DRAWS. DRAWS. By the way the music is sounding very musical. And shout out to you. I'm Catrice helping. I'm sure it's time. Space Jam 3000. That's the coolest music festival in the galaxy. You bet it is. You make sure you just go there and take him down. I got you walling check. [Music] Wow that sucked on so many levels. Little Hamilton in there. [Music] A little buster eye. It lends listening. He's going to be sight. You described that as a little Hamilton. [Music] I got you all in check. Who is that? I'm not wrong. I referred him by his first name only. Who got you all in check is sample in a beast voice song, right? No, no. It's just buster ropes. But isn't in a shake your romp. And shake your romp. There's like who got you all in check. Running from the law, my president. Oh shit. Is Busta doing an interpolation of an old thing? Oh it might be. Like an old sugar hill type style thing. I've got a better idea. Hit us in the tittest. Let us know what it is. We don't have time for this. Collective knowledge. [Music] Watch out for that sandworm. It's really out there. Spider-Man flew by. Back to back, Spider-Man musical references. Because it was just the previous sketch. And then he crashed. Because a New York thing happening that everyone was talking about all the time. Yeah. He just swang into the background and crashed in the wall. And the dinky as Spider-Man music. [Music] We're sneaking into the concert. [Music] We're climbing. We're climbing into the concert. Get out of the shot! We found it. We found it. We're gonna be crying. [Music] Carmelo Anthony. I should have asked you guys. But you say pretty cool. [Music] Go mix. [Music] That was great. For those not watching when they were climbing. The camera was putting 90 degrees. And so they're climbing straight up a wall. And then someone random just starts walking down the wall. It was very funny. Also, Carmelo Anthony. I don't quite understand why he was so present this week. He had just joined the New York Knicks. Gotcha. Also in ESPN Classic. And he also introduces Elton John. That's why it was a huge deal that he had joined the Knicks. He's the salvation. Also, I was impressed that he's not doing like, oh, I don't know how to talk sports guy thing. He's doing it in impression. He's acting, going, "Oh, I should have a roast. You come." You seem pretty cool. The frame on pause on is the reveal of what draws is. I think we talked about this in a much earlier episode. But that the Dr. Oz show was on the sound stage on seven or six below SNL. Oh my god. And on the weekend on a Saturday. It'll just be empty. Or even on Fridays, it was dark. So we were like, can we just go shoot on the Dr. Oz set? And call him Dr. Oz. And it says the Dr. Oz show. I like that we didn't remove the period too. It just says Dr. Oz. And it's the third head being placed onto a different body. Not a buffness time. But an Elton John face on top of Dr. Oz's face right on the poster on the wall. Now, of course, the haunting part is that Dr. Oz is now. He made him the villain. Yeah, he'd write, like, draws. Turns out to be a far nicer guy than Dr. Oz. But here's where we are. We should maybe refer to Dr. Oz's draws moving forward. Yeah, you know what? Let me do that again. Look, this must be where Dr. Oz is playing. Let's go. This must be where Dr. Oz is playing. It's too late. Let's take to the stage. Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming. It's just going to clearly some extras in the studio audience. Oh, my God. It's just the thinnest crowd. Just all of our crew sitting in the light. I mean, Dr. Oz, if he happened, he wouldn't have had to tell him Monday. Like, hey, did you see SNL? There's, like, Elton John is singing on your show. And his name is Dr. Oz. Yes, no permission. Also a really great read-on. That's really good. Really good. And really, and shout out to the props department because we made a lot of props for laser guys. But this, I think, was definitely made by the props department. And shout out to Jimmy Kimmel, right, Seth? I mean, what a great guy. Oh, yeah. Guillermo, vote for Guillermo. I'm happy with the stars. Seth, your coffee mugs are among my favorite. You've seen me drink out of him many times. Yeah, I'll get you a new one if you need me. So your merch is pretty great. Seth rocks. I don't know if we need to use all these. I'd like to really go. That was really good. And it fits the musical theme of this episode. All right, I'm in play. This is going to be a real blast. Lichter, Lichter, Lichter, Lichter, Lichter, Lichter, Lichter. Oh, it's hypnotizing all the cats in the audience. There's a subsonic signal that's attracting the cats to him. Leads the cats, come to me! So all these cats just, like, cling to him, clearly reversed footage. And you can see the strings where we taped a bunch of fake cats to him and then pulled them all off at the same time. And then he became Phantom of the Opera with Tim Foyle on his face. Yeah. And shout out to the props department for making it. And Kimmel too in his hats. I don't forget Seth Smugge. I think we also did an ADR line for Admiral Spaceship for no reason. Oh, just, that was great. That was probably a shout out to the Garth Meringue's again. I'm going to just jump in right here and say, in every one of our rewatches, I don't think the estimation of how much I've appreciated a host has gone up as much as it has for Alan John. Everything we're seeing him in, I'm enjoying so much. And watching him just full-throatedly put his talents behind laser cats to musicals. Full-throated, you can feel the wink. It's probably factored into him getting the knighthood. And also just knowing! None of this means anything to him. It's a shame we didn't release this song. You know, like, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Now, for the encore. They shoot in everyone. Yeah. That's a lorry, and he hates it. He was killing a blue man. Oh my god, that was the best throw away joke. Yeah, that was really good. Cuts to U2 with Tom Hanks watching, Eating Popcorn Super Jazz. But on the TV, it's a foreshot, essentially. The three of you plus the TV is a blue man group guy getting shot by lights. Kill everyone. We've got to stop this music. Give me the shrink-on, but it doesn't work. Believe in yourself, Kimisabi. Here goes nothing. That's how it's gonna get to work. Believe in yourself. It works! I knew you could do it. Hey, drugs! Suck on this! It's a rowing, Andy Adam. He's closed his mouth! Aim for the gap! Oh, and John famously has a gap between his two front teeth.
- Oh, this is really good. - And Andy is apparently microscopic and go through it even though we just saw him as an action figure in it. And in Bill's hand, that was clearly like four inches. - Hey, hey, hey. (laughing) - Now he's the size of a tooth. - He's doing it, he's doing it. - I'm doing it, I'm really doing it. - He's touching his epiglottis. (dramatic music) - He's falling over, draws his down, he had the head. - So, what'd you think? - I hated it, fair enough. - Tom, I'm just glad I got my Wilson back. - Better? - And what did you think, Wilson? - I thought it was dope, dude. - Here's a go! - Nope, it's Spider-Man one more. - Shit, that might be one of the best ones. I'm not gonna lie. - Yeah, really good. - It's a real good. - It cooks, it moves. - It cooks. - And it's got layers of jokes in a way that some of the other ones don't, in a really nice way. - Wait, so in the same way as the rejecting the breast joke, Elton said the funniest thing to me, when we were prepping him, and he was on the ground, he was dead, he was covered in cats, and he had me come closer to him, so he could whisper in my ear, this is more pussy than I've ever seen in my life.
