From ESPN, Saturdays on the college football schedule and of course does some NFL as well. It's Peter McFarlane, good friend of the show. Good to see you. How are you? Excellent, sir. What's happened? Well, a lot is going on. Let's just start with recap it a little before we look at it of the week, including obviously LSU returning to Oxford. I was actually there, I think the last two times or the last time these two teams played each other. But what does the Texas win do for you against Ohio State last Saturday? Well, I think it was a much needed win for Sark. I mean, if you look at both coaches and both programs, Ohio State's won a championship recently. Ryan Day's kind of gotten the Michigan monkey off his back. He's gotten the championship monkey off his back. Ryan Day is kind of in a comfort zone now where he can suddenly in and just be the Ohio State coach. What has Sark done? Like Sark has got everything he could ever want. He went out and got arched to running back side of the portal. He got the best while I received by the portal. We got the best linebacker out of the portal. Like at some point, they've given Sark everything that they could possibly given and what has Sark given them. And so I think this win, win was monumental for Sark. I think it was big for Arch. Arch is the guy who like this win. And I think I've heard a lot of people say this. This win was kind of a microcosm of his career just up and down. The early on was just a little off. In the second half, he was really good. And I think that's kind of been the inconsistency of Arch's career. But this was the biggest win of his career. I think it was a win that he needed. It was definitely a win that Sark needed. And I think Texas just kind of, you know, realized and kind of made everyone confident that they were one of the best teams in the country. We already knew that. Ohio State still won the best teams. I think the biggest fact in the game to me was the fact that I don't know how you simulate 130 degrees in Columbus. Ohio. And I thought in the fourth quarter, the heat played a factor. Texas was ready for a new house. They wasn't. There's a lot of stuff. If you dig into the Ohio State offensive philosophy and the lack of tempo, you know, and Ryan Day's even talked about it. Like, hey, we're a team that expects to contend for a national championship. So you go, this many games, that many plays like we could be saving 200 300 snaps for guys on both sides of the football. If you go back to last year, the time in between snaps is really long for Ohio State. I think against Miami, it's 59 snaps. I think you could get on their case a little bit about like, hey, you may need to play this game out, like trying to maximize every single possession. So I think the simple thing is you go, if you're Ohio State and you're generally better than everybody else, and you have Jeremiah Smith in your team, why don't you want to go faster? I get their larger philosophy and I'm sure they put a ton of time into this, but after that loss, blowing the lead and some of the stuff that happened last year against Indiana and then again, Miami and the playoffs, do you think it's fair criticism for what seems like an offense that wants to look. College football is kind of slowing down a little bit based on some of the peaks and the teens there, but what do you think about that criticism? I think it's fair. I also think that, you know, every team's not built to go fast. Like, it's not a copycat world where everybody has to do the same thing. Everybody's had to go to a warped temple. I think if you look at, you know, when Nick Saban, Alabama was pounding people, they didn't go fast. Like, you don't necessarily have to go fast. Temple, to me, temple is something you use when you have lesser talented teams or lesser talented players because temple can equalize the playing field. When you are like Ohio State and you got superior talent, you play whatever temple you want, okay? Whether it's slower, faster, you still got execute, doesn't matter. Now, some would say you can get more plays, Ryan Day would probably say, yeah, but we can execute better if we go at our normal temple instead of going warp speed. So, um, and to your point, you don't always have to go temple. You can kind of speed it up. Say in the first, in the second quarter, you might pick a series, hey, we're going to go temple this series. So I do think that they can kind of alternate a little bit from his philosophy. I think the bigger thing between the first half and the second half, Jeremiah Smith went off in the first half, second half he didn't. He couldn't get the button, couldn't get the football. If I am Arthur Smith, who's the office of coordinator, I am calling plays minimum 15 times a game where Jeremiah Smith is the primary. He's getting 15 targets a game. If he catches half of him, he's got eight catches for a buck something. If he catches 15, he's got a, he's got an historic day. I thought that was the biggest issue other than the heat and the second half. Yeah, I think there could be, and I mean, these are like real first world problems. It's like looking at George's defensive line rotation and be like, oh, they just had one more guy. I'm like, all right, relax. But Ohio State, because they've been known to just pump them into the NFL here at receiver, it's like, okay, well, what's going to happen in that number two spot? You know, because like they brought Chris Henry Jr. out there because they probably felt like to this point two games in and granted a massive jump up in competition for Texas in that spot. I'm with you on the heat. You're just so, we're so spoiled with Ohio State that you feel like, okay, number one and number two are both like first round picks. And as of right now, you're like, well, if you can key in on Jeremiah Smith and change up the way, basically must-champ admitted, we had a change everything we did in the second half just to try to account for Jeremiah Smith, which makes you wonder what the hell was the plan leading up to let him go that way, especially at the end of the first half. I just thought like that's awful to give up that touchdown and still works out for him. I think it's kind of a slight concern. But again, some of the big 10 teams that they're going to play, it's not going to matter. It's not going to matter. Maybe it matters at the end of the year. By the way, what are we doing with the mustache? It seems to be kind of doing the thing of its own right now. What do we got going? We went ahead of bars. There was a cowboy themed event, and I milked it for a little longer than I thought it would, but I just needed the rest of it to grow back in to even it out. So as as as someone who's who's seen you for a lot of the years, I've seen you with hair without hair. I've seen a lot of different states. This is not probably probably one of the the better ones, just FYI. No one no one seems to like it. Men seem to like it a little bit more than women do, but that doesn't concern me at all. Yeah, well, whatever. I mean, I sometimes I think you need I talk about this all time. Why do I have to look the same all the time? You know, mix it up. Look bad. And then I come back. It's like, Hey, you know, who looks pretty good? Right. He doesn't he doesn't look terrible anymore. All right. Dante Moore, when he wins, it's like man, calm, cool, collected, like this stuff is awesome. And I'm guilty of this too. And then when he loses, you're like, Hey, man, what are we doing? Now, look, I think there's defensive questions. They haven't able to run the football for two weeks, but he had a throw in that game against Oklahoma State where he just darts it. And I'm going like, what's going on right now, guy? So you sat around in studio probably watching a good chunk of that incredible win by Oklahoma State. What is alarming about Oregon for you? - Their high end talent is not playing high end football. That's number one. And that includes the defensive line that's probably got three or four guys that are gonna play on Sunday. The quarterback has been very inconsistent. I think losing both Tosh and Boyle and Will Stein, the two coordinators, office of the defense coordinate last year, is playing a factor. And so I think when you combine all of that and then here's to me, the cherry on the cake. They're not playing with the ads right now, man. You can tell a team is playing with the ads that's kind of going to the echo of the whistle. Like they are on ads, they are playing there, hitting people there, running through people. It almost seems like Oregon right now, it's said, okay, we're suppriming the talented. We got to fit to be a not a roster. Let's just step out there and our talent will take over. And there's the old saying, man, a hard work to be talented and talent don't work hard. Okay, it's really simple. And you saw a team at Oklahoma State that just outworked, Oregon, like that there was no edge to Oregon. There was talent, they showed up, but there was no edge, no finish, no, no, just grit. And that's something that if you're a man landing, you have to ask yourself, why is that? And it's two weeks in a row, okay? Once it's an accident, twice, there's a three and three times as a problem. So there's a trend going on right now that you have to ask yourself, how does it stop? And Dan's got to answer that question. I don't know because what's in the culture of that program should answer for two weeks in a row. It's one thing to have a bad performance against Boise at home first day, and I get it first day, and always lie. But the second game on the road, the lose to a team that got embarrassed by Tossal, that's very alarming. - Yeah, I'm with you, man. I'm worried that there's just something off with them. But God, I mean, you're right. It's kind of like some of these teams, I'll go through the roster and be like, well, that guy's gonna be a draft pick. That guy's gonna be a draft pick. And there's like five guys on defense where you're like, well, they're all gonna play. It's like that LSU offensive line a couple of years ago where you're like, all five of those dudes ended up getting drafted. Like, how come they couldn't run the football? Like, that's insane. Is there a team, is there a player coach something? Is there something that surprised you that you're like, hey, I kind of like that a little bit more than I thought I would? - Probably Mississippi State, man. You know, Mississippi State has kind of been an afterthought in the SEC for a long time. And, you know, I think they were maybe a slight dog or a pick them or whatever at Minnesota, you know, roll your boat. Let's see if we can get this, the boat being rolled up in Minnesota. And then Kamario Taylor just showed up and showed out, man. And I don't know how big he is, you know, varying some people say six with, some people say six three. I just know one thing. Well, he listed it like six four to 30. - Okay, that's how big he looks. Like, he looks like a little smaller version of Kamario. But he can throw it, man, he is spending the football. He's caught that eye of a lot of people around the country. And when you have a quarterback like that, now people want to come play with it. And so Jeff LeBee has a great offensive system. Mississippi State is a phenomenal breeding ground for defense of talent because it is a quiet state where you can get a lot of guys, a lot of a lot of big athletic dues in Mississippi. They just gotta keep other schools out of there. So I would say Mississippi State, Jeff LeBee, specifically Kamario Taylor have been outstanding. And I think they've shocked a lot of people. Kamario, man, if he just keeps getting better and better around this year, they're gonna surprise a lot of people. But I think next year, they'll be able to get a lot of people to come to Starkville to play with this key. And then Mississippi State can really take off. - Does it feel like Indiana then is the favorite in the big 10, I mean, that seems a little ridiculous. I mean, if Ohio State makes that feel goal, they probably, we're not talking about any of this stuff. I mean, there's a scenario where Texas tries to go faster and would need two possessions there. But I always think it's worth remembering that 'cause we'll all forget it, a makeable feel goal from them. But it does, it feel too reactionary, two weeks in or is there something there where you'll be like, "Well, look, what do you want me to do with Oregon?" Indiana is the class of the big 10. - I still think Ohio State's the class of the big 10. I think I'm not gonna let a fourth quarter where the heat got to him a little bit. They were up 20 on Texas and their house, and they were dominating the games. What do we know about Indiana? This year, I think who was terrific. - I think who was terrific, I think defense is gonna be filthy, so. - Hoover's been great, like the whole team has been great. I need to see this team get tested though. I need to see this team, like, being on the field with the two opponents, even the field so far, is definitely doing anything for me. I think they'll be good, but until further notice, I'm gonna go to the house state. I think USC is much better. I don't trust Lincoln Riley, but I do think the talent is better. Oregon, I'm very close to giving up on them. Indiana, I think is right there. I think those are the four teams that are gonna have something to say about the big 10. But right now, I still think Ohio State's the class of the big 10. So you don't like Western Kentucky's chances to test Indiana this week? - No, not at all. Indiana's non-con is a joke, like, come on, seriously. Like, what's your gonna talk to you about Indiana? - Western Kentucky is awful. They might be, where I don't know of how much of that Georgia game you watch. I mean, 'cause Georgia's the same thing. Like, hey, Indiana, we know it's gonna be really good. We know that Georgia's gonna be really good, but what do we know other than that? I think they scored seven straight touchdowns, they'll open up the game, and then get stopped at a fumble. - It's not gonna be any worse than Miami, you know, going to a running clock and a four quarter against FAMU. So, I mean, it can't get any worse than that. - Miami's story, like, this is a really good cop here. No one is paying any attention to the fact that, like, Miami's secondary is a mess, because no one cares because of the schedule. And this is the difference between, like, the spotlight. Like, I'll use this right now. If Kawaii Leonard were actually a star, like, Kawaii Leonard is a Hall of Famer. He has a star when he's at his best. He is one of the better players. Now, granted, you know, nobody's saying, like, I wanna start one team with him at this stage of his career. And the fact that he's one of the worst partners in professional sports. But if Kawaii were a higher profile NBA guy for 10, 15 years, this story for him is so much worse. But since it's so weird, he never talks. No one even really has an opinion when he laughed once. It was like, oh my God, this guy's got like a crazy laugh. Like in a way, he gets diskate. And the analogy here is that Miami can have all of these secondary, but the schedule, it's like, well, whatever. It doesn't matter. Texas Tech almost loses to Oregon State. That freshman receiver, LeGee, or LeGee, I can't even pronounce, he was insane. And that was like a real game. Like, they were in the fight with him the entire time. So credit to Texas Tech for waking up there. But here's two teams that have not only like, we've assumed win their conference and real playoff aspirations. But they are kind of, it's weird, considering one was in a national championship game and tech was in the playoffs. They're under the radar and not even close to like facing any of the criticism concerns that we have with Oregon, granted 'cause Oregon lost. Which is, I think it makes it too simplistic when we look at it that way. - You know, if you got a moment, juxtapose the schedule of Texas Tech, Miami, Notre Dame, and just pick any, just randomly pick three SEC schedules. It doesn't matter what team, just pick the schedule. And when you look at any set SEC team, versus those three schedules, like you see why Commissioner Sanky will say, like the scheduling and you have to look at the strength of schedule because all schedules are not credit equal. Like the Miami schedules are joke. The Notre Dame schedules are joke. Texas Tech, everybody's hyping up this Houston game on Friday night. I don't think it's going to be okay. You may be cold for a half, but I think in the end, Texas Tech beats Houston by 10 points of more. So the fact that tech just had that issue in Corvallis, like that doesn't line up well for Houston. I'm with you there. - I'm not a Conor Wigman guy. I don't think Conor Wigman is fun. - I'm not either. But I can throw you to a victory. Come on man. - You know, I've watched him enough and we know that he was a big time recruiting everything. I was watching one of their games against recently. I was like, why does he already throw the ball? Like it's Kirk Cousins. Like I get why Kirk has to load up for a 10 yarder. And maybe that's a little unfair. Maybe I'm not a mechanics guy. But that part is, you can hate the SEC all you want. It's just indisputable. The fact that you have Texas going against Ohio State, they get UTSA and everybody can make their, and then it's like, okay, then what happens? Tennessee, Oklahoma, Florida, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Missouri, LSU, and then A&M at the end after Arkansas. Like give me a fucking break. And that's why when I had Cannell on, I said if Texas goes nine and three and Penn State goes 11 and one, who do you want in the playoff? What do you think his answer was? - Oh, I already know his answer. His answer was Penn State. Penn State Scares of Jocos. So like, come on, man. Come on, like, but I just wonder on the first Tuesday night in November, when me, McElroy, Galloway, and Reese Davis were sitting at the desk and the first rankings are revealed, I just wonder what the strength of schedule, because you'll know really quickly how they look at the strength of schedule. How are they going to view this? Isn't like head to head and we can figure it out at the end. Like the strength of schedule you, it's gonna adjust every week. And so I think that's gonna be fascinating, man. - I just wish people could go, "Hey, this isn't even close. The experience that this team had versus what this team had." But, you know, we gotta see a playout too. But what are those losses? Like, what do they actually look like? And that's the thing is if Texas doesn't schedule that game with Ohio State last year, they're in the playout. There's something for everyone when it comes to Reese's. We like talking combos, right? like combo plate, one of my options, Reese's doesn't want to give you options 'cause you don't need any other options. You're like, I just want that historic peanut butter, that first ballot hall of fame peanut butter, that a lot of us, depending on a certain age, you're like, you know that taste. And you're like, they're making this in jars right now too. Because like, let's look at the NFL season. You go, I expect to see Aaron Donald, the Miles Garrett out there. I'm like, I haven't seen either. He knew Donald was gonna play week one. Now Garrett is out in the injury. He looked limited in that first game. So let's get him right. Should all make sense. Reese's peanut butter cups would never, ever do that to you. So I'm not even being critical of those guys, but that's what I'm talking about. When greatness is combined, and it is there for you every single week. Hell, it's there for you every single day. If you want to get dangerous with it, it is the ultimate combination that you can depend on every single bite and every single experience. I hate their offense right now. I think they're making, they're just not clean. It's not a clean operation. You can say it's a freshman quarterback, but they had back to back like fall starts in some short yarded situations where the lineman, like the count was totally off and then it like happened again. You can tell like McRoy's kind of going like, "What the hell is this?" And granted, this is post-sabin, one of the most buttoned up operations ever, but they are continuing to look like a sloppy football team who right now on offense, I do not trust it all. - I think they're like some, like, I take a look at Alabama and LSU. They got defense as I think I agree with Yoam Bama's defense. Both of them are gonna be nasty. Both of them have potential to be really, really good. I love Kane-Wolmack and Alabama. We know what Blake Baker's done. And they both got quarterbacks that seemingly are super athletic, but they got to play around them a little bit. And you know, the Russell is a resture freshman so you kind of expect that out of him. - Yeah. - The first time in the party, Sam Leavick. I mean, he's out there throwing yolo balls against Louisiana Tech. Like, you don't expect that from him. And so I think both Lane and Kaelin have to figure out a way to offensive guys that have to learn to play around what could be quarterbacks that are very inconsistent. I think that's why both of those teams, at their best, Kaelin Russell is a super athletic quarterback that'll remind you a lot of a better version of Jalen Murrow, as far as control it to run the whole nine. Sam Leavick can kind of do the same. Like, he's super athletic running around. I think somebody on social media said he reminds him like a squirrel that took out a raw. Like, he's just everywhere, at his best, it's really, really good. But when you throw and go low balls, when you've got a defense that's giving up zero yards, it doesn't look good. So I like Russell. I think Russell is a year away from being a legitimate Heisman contender. He's going to go through some ups and downs this season. And I think Alabama, if you're Kaelin the Boer, I love the fact that he started over Austin Max so you can kind of already go ahead and start that maturation process. But I do like what Alabama's doing. We came, we'll Mac, Ryan Grub, the OC, Kaelin the Boer. I think you're on the right path. All right, let's talk about it. LSU Lane Train back to Oxford, Mississippi. For those of you that watch the LSU game, or maybe those of you that didn't against Louisiana Tech, that was a strange one, because it's a game at half time. Louisiana Tech technically had zero total yards at the half, based on the negative plays and the positive plays, but then you had all the picks and the levied experience to your point. It's a lot of fun. It scares the shit out of me. If I'm going through like roster to roster, I don't think there's any way you could put all misses defense at the level of what LSU has and with these options. But on the other side, I like turning that better than Sam. I like the running backs better than Sam. I like the number one receiver for Ole Miss better than anything that LSU has to this point, unless you want to talk about green, but he's technically going to tight end here. So how do you, we can talk offensive line, all kind of stuff, but going any direction you want here, what you think is important with this matchup, and kind of which way you're leaning. - So here's how I look at this game. I think Ole Miss has to win a certain way. Trinidad has got to be special. Kiwan Laces got to run the football, and Duce has got to be Duce. That's how they're going to win. Like they're going to score and put up 28, 30, 35 points, and they're going to count on their defense at home, getting opportunistic stops, getting turnovers, and now, if the possession total is now 10 to Ole Miss, seven to their opponent, they win, because they got the better quarterback. I agree, Trinidad has the best quarterback in the country for me, he throws it before the receiver ever breaks, he's proven he can do it against in big games. You go back and you watch Trinidad versus Georgia, then you watch Arch versus Georgia. It's like they like dark. And one's supposed to be a generational guy, and the other one, just dismantled Georgia. I mean, had Kirby just pulling his hair out. I think this game, though, comes down to can the LSU defense. Just hold, sir. You're not going to stop Trinidad. You're not going to pitch a shutout. I think they can't let Trinidad win the game, though. Meaning they have to force Kiwan Lacey to run the football and force Ole Miss to run the football. I think whichever team runs the football, the best is going to win. I don't think Lane's going to put the game in Sam libous hands and Charlie Wise are going to put the game in Sam libous hands. I think it's going to be a lot of run game with Dylan Jones. I think it's going to be Sam libder running the football. I think the LSU defense can set the tempo and set the tone. But I think when it's all sitting done, if you didn't watch the game or you gave me one step, Kiwan Lacey, Dylan Jones, who rushes the football more? That's the team I think is going to win this game, because I am going to give Ole Miss credit that atmosphere is going to be stupid, man. It's going to be crazy. I know what it's like to be in that type of atmosphere and those players and it's going to be stupid. That's going to count for something for Ole Miss. They're going to play with their hair on fire and LSU, just like a basketball game. You got to withstand that first five minutes, withstand the emotion, because you can't play for 60 like that. So once you get past the first five minutes and we settle in, then it's going to come down and who runs the ball and who can stop the run. What about the bullshit part of this? Lane going back and then Prince number one for LSU who was at Ole Miss. He was served with papers today in the parking lot of the football facility and look, Prince and Jordan off the ends have looked unstoppable. Now maybe it was just Clemson and maybe it's losing in a tech and all that kind of stuff, but I think that feels a little real. Whether it's like Lane and Asset here, because everybody goes, hey, we're rallying for our coach. This place is going to be on fire. They're going to hate him so much. So this gives us all this extra motivation or the part of Lane where he kind of can't help himself. And you wonder, I don't know. I think he's like so focused as a football person. I wouldn't worry about that part of it, but there's just a lot of nonsense that goes along with this. And how do you factor that into impacting the game? I factor the nonsense like this. I think before 12 meets leather, it's going to be a zoo. Everybody's going to be on the field. Both ADs are going to be on the field. Both presidents are going to be on the field. It may be a shouting match. It's going to be a zoo until I told me it's leather. At that point, I think Lane said the best. I'm not playing, peace not playing. And so at that point, it comes down to who's more confident in what they do. Because you got to think having practiced these staffs are so intermingled. They practiced against each other so much. So Pete Golden knows Charlie Wise. Charlie Wise knows Pete Golden. Lane knows Pete. Pete knows Lane. Kevin Smith is running back code. He used to be like, everybody knows everybody. And so who can be more confident and execute? But it is going to be a total shit show until told me it's leather. I don't want to go to this game. As far as watching the game, I would love to be on the field 30 minutes before kit. Because to me, that's where you're going to get the fireworks. Because you might get some shoving and pushing. Somebody's going to say something. Somebody's going to throw a battery at Lane. Like, it is going to be total chaos 30 minutes before kit. Once told me, it's nothing, man. I think the best team wins. Who suffers from coordinator face more? Lane Kiffin or Pete Golden? Coordinator face. I would say, I would say Pete. Because Lane just-- Lane doesn't call the place. Charlie calls the place. So I still haven't broken 90, which is crazy because I was, I shot 90 twice right out of the gates. And then it's, the scores got worse, the swing got better. So we had a really nice front, again, the other day, the heat out here. I'm almost like Ohio State's front. The heat, it's been humid out here in LA. We're not used to that here. So I think the heat got to me a little bit. I gotta start figuring out maybe I work out before or something just to get my mind right. But those scores are coming. And I've got a, I'm playing Cedar and Missouri here in a couple of weeks with a bunch of Vermont guys. So that's a three day tournament. There's some questions based on some swings. If I'm bullshitting everybody with handicap, and I've already told them, I don't need any of your money. What's your course management like? Are you like a guy, if it's a short par four, are you going, are you getting like five mile an hour that you're going to hit driver regardless? The driver's probably were most of my problem, Stark, because if it's a bad driver day, then I'm fixing it. But I had an incredible bogey off of two terrible shots to start a hole. And I was like, this means you're getting better that you actually like are five on this hole. But I had some great drives. The problem is I was hitting the piss out of my irons, like even beyond what I normally would do. So I've got the compression part down. I had a part five where it's a massive, massive dog like the left, like a left hard 90 degree turn. So I was trying to cut the tree a little bit. I've done it before. And the thing just went straight. But it went so straight, it went past the sand traps. So I was in the rough and I was 300 out. And I'm going to tell the story because nobody I played with understood what was happening. And I hit an eight iron and I compressed it so much I hit it 188 with 112 to go, no role because the fairway, this place I place is a dump. - You hit it on an 88 yards? - Yeah, no role. Like it was muddy because it just was like stuck in the fairway. So I part it because I was like, I figure, hey, if I hit it right, I'll be 160, 170, and then I'll be 130 in. So I am getting a little bit better of the management thing. I'm also getting better of not trying to fight a bad drive and just getting back and getting into play. So I'm actually striking the shit out of it. But now I went to hit a gap wedge and I hit it like 140. So I was like, well, fuck, I don't know what to do now. It went 20, it was right online with a pin and it was 20 yards past the green. So like the guys I'm playing with are you the dumbest? Yeah, I was like, I just can't figure out what anything is 'cause, you know, the A&R for me should be a 165, 170. And if my drives are even playable then I think those low scores are coming 'cause shipping and putting actually I'm good at because I play the part three all the time. I know it's gonna be so frustrating for you But was there any discussion on the sideline of like hey, we're we've moved the ball here There's there's something in this game for us like what was going through your head even after disappointing play like that Yeah, coach Morris and our our offensive coordinator coach Brophy were we're honest on the sidelines and We're moving the ball on these guys like if it wasn't for a tip pass like and If we were to score it on that first try like that's 14 points and so we look up and it says seven to three, but you know We've we've gotten into the red zone twice on these guys like We we're rolling right now and so I felt like all the guys felt that confidence of like We're kind of rolling on offense right now And I think that was a great job. I coach Morris getting us into plays that you know kind of played in our strengths And I felt like I got got the guys confidence up Like a lot of people watching, you know because of Oregon's expectations this year They take the lead 30 one three and you're like, okay, well, you know, this was this was fun What was what was going on with you guys is as disappointing as it probably was losing the lead Yeah, I felt like We were so like confident in that part of the game like Our our offense felt so good. I feel like defense was playing so strong and I felt like there was no no doubt like no flinching For many of the guys we all kind of New like all right. No, I actually never started a game in high school Well, there you go was on freshman B team my first year and then was a backup quarterback my whole career in high school So what did coach Morris? Well, I actually got hooked up with him by quarterback coach that I knew Jeff Christianson who he found me through an Instagram DM and So I got hooked up with Jeff Christianson and went through with him and he told coach Morris He was like you need to take this guy and coach Morris is like all right out. Let me send me his film and he was like you Didn't have any film and so They Jeff sent them some videos of me throwing and they were like all right if someone quits will will give him a walk-on spot and so I was like surely they're not gonna call me back and They called me like a week later and was like hey someone quit like would you want to come be a walk-on and I was like Yeah, I'm there and just showed up like a month later for the summer workouts and just want from there But just so we can clarify for not only myself with the audience Did you not play your senior year because there was just somebody else that was there that was considered better than you? Yeah, I my junior year the kid is now a Baylor as their catcher So I kind of like and he was the returning starter. So I knew I wasn't gonna play my junior year and then My senior year. I thought I was gonna play and then a kid at transfered in who was like a four star And we had a quarterback battle and they named him the starter and So I went and played safety in corner my senior year So at North Texas was it an open competition? What what been your second year on campus? Is that right? Yeah, yeah, it was a they brought in a kid from Miami To compete with me because I played in the bull game my true freshman year and So they brought a kid in for Miami to like true competition and they named me the starter like The week before week one like week zero the season so That was my really first taste of being QB1 So I went back and watched a lot of the tape and I'm not some like you know football Hardcore guru so I'm not gonna pretend that I that I know but I that throw that you had against rice for the touchdown for 52 yards Where you had all that traffic your feet that was one where I was like all right? Let me rewind that one again Um, and then it's just deep shot. It's the seam throws. It's you moving around back there I think more than you get credit for and finding this have you I don't want to get it. It's it's one of those things like have you can't help but notice Like okay, I went from not playing in high school to no offers to now I'm seeing myself in a first round mock draft. Has that happened? Yeah 100% I mean, it's it's wild that it's all happened this fast, you know, I kind of always like New one day like I could be a great quarterback, but I did not expect it all to happen this fast and I think Coach Morrison, Coach Brophy have developed me so fast and Really gotten me at the speed of I think helped me with with all the missing reps I had in high school Yeah, that's kind of the beauty of your story. It's like imaginative. This guy starts getting steady reps What was it about what happened? Actually, I imagine I can probably guess But if if coach Morris takes the okay, if he takes the Oklahoma state job How quick is that conversation with you like hey, you're coming with us true? Yeah, it was it was I mean Pretty quick and he he told me he was like you're our guy like But he was like you're gonna have to tell me what you're doing too because at the end of the day like we want you and we only want you but If you're not gonna come here, we still got to have a quarterback next year, and I was like yeah, like I'm I'm gonna see what other people have to say, but like you're you're my number one So I told him that and he was like all right like that's fine with me. I just like Like our relationship's strong enough that I'll tell you what we're doing and you tell me what you're doing and so I took a call, like one other school and I called them and told them about it and it was like all right, like that's cool, whatever, but don't break my heart and then just hung up on me, how's like, all right, I'm going there, I'm going to Oklahoma State. So it was a pretty quick decision for me. Two quick things before we finish here. How tough were the meetings after the Tulsa Las, because even Coach Moore as it said, like, hey, we got on these guys and you would say they got on us. Was there a moment that stuck out in particular of how tough that week was watching the film and going through everything in preparation for Oregon? Yeah, I think just right after the game, you know, Coach Moore's walks in and he's like, that's the most embarrassing offensive performance I've ever been a part of and I mean, I agree honestly, it was bad. And we weren't playing our game, we weren't playing physical, we weren't playing fast, we weren't making plays and but I think that's what's so great about Coach Morris is he's going to tell it's tell it to you straight off. He's going to be your biggest fan whenever, whenever things go great and whenever things don't go great, he's going to be on you to be better because he knows, he knows what kind of team we are. You're a lot of fun to watch and that's what I saw from the tape last year because you will just get out there and sling it and I think it's going to be a lot of fun to watch you play the position and continue to grow. I guess I have to. I would. So they didn't know the deal. The kids are just grabbing a couple of plums. And he was like running around being like, I'm just trying to kill 40 minutes here. He's like, you farmers market every week. I was like, yeah, every week now, I'm pretty close to retiring. And I grabbed the kids some, some smash fruit and said, Hey, you know, one for each. This is the good stuff. And it was kind of like, now he knows me. Uncle, right. I have that in me. You haven't, but that's weird. That wasn't really premeditated, though, you know, that was sort of like, Oh, look at these guys are here. What could I do now that everyone's here? I'm not trying to take away from it. I'm ready. This is it. Yeah. I could buy fruit for my own kid. You, you do nice things for people. And it, and it like, it's alarming. Like it frightens people. I've seen that happen over the years. I think they make that's rotisserie chicken. And it's generally a relaxed shopping experience with good produce. So it is part of the grocery store rotation. I figure I pay at least 30, 40 more dollars. Then I would an alternative store to offset the price. I visit the Poke bar shovel about $20 with a raw fish cubes into a bowl and eat them while walking and shopping through the store. When I disclose the strategy to my friends, it typically gets laughter. That's a good idea. That's the quote that he gets from his friends. But most recently, my brother-in-law called me a thief and seemed genuinely disappointed in this behavior. Don't get me wrong. There is zero chance, caps. But if you're like an overall normal dude, everyone's got their flaws. It's kind of not the end of the world. But it is kind of like blatantly stealing. And you know, at some point, like how you might get caught and probably it's going to be worth like the juices are going to be squeezed on that one. So, you know, who knows there might have a sting operation already with the cameras in there just waiting for you to do this again. But yeah, I don't know what what kind of town you're in, but like in L.A. Like they're starting to put guys in there, you know, with badges and shit. And they're they're watching for who's doing what? You know, and if you're not in a town that, you know, is starting to adopt that philosophy, but, you know, there's dude with with weapons in the grocery store now. So I'm just saying like they might be, you know, all you have to do is cross your path. I've been told in the big cities, you can just deal whatever you want. That's that's what that's what here's the pushback. Yeah. Now there's a full time guy in there. Somebody's been getting their hand it on. I was living in San Francisco working in finance between the hours and everything else. I barely had time to hang out with the boys. I heard Ryan talk about how he killed to get a what's the move text on a Friday night again. That ain't the truth. It made me rip the thing is I probably be like I have football day tomorrow. I don't want to do it. It made me realize I didn't want to spend my late 20s missing that part of life. So I moved back home to Bend Oregon where most of my friends live. It's been incredible. So genuinely thank you for the advice. One life at a time. I moved into a house with four other guys and a dog and we've been there for about two years. The beginning of this month though our landlords told us they're moving back into the house so we have 60 days to get out and now I'm at a crossroads. Living with the boys has been an absolute blast. But living with four other dudes is also starting to wear on me. People come home drunk late on weeknights. The house constantly being dirty and never really having your own space. There's also the dating side of it. Nothing quite like telling a female woman you live with four dudes and watching your face processed and information in real time. So I'm considering getting my own place, my questions and my throwing away some of the best years of the boys by moving out. Do I need to suck it up and keep living with them? How much is the four roommate situation actually hurting me with dating versus me just looking for something else to blame for being single? That's that's its own branch of philosophy. Is there anyone else who's starting to like maybe afraid to say it and is also looking around? You know, is there anyone else who's maybe going to break out? Like it's this is a different stage of life, different decade of your life. I think this is a good opportunity for you to do that. I mean, this is other than that weird window of a disaster situation, which was sort of temporary because I was running a room and then going back and forth. So I was saving it. 20 years old 510 170 entering junior year at a big party school Bench 225 for three. So not exactly combine numbers, but I figure I get that other way before we're silo asks. I actually never asked. They just junior year party. That's the headline. That sounds great. Big party school. Going into my sophomore year, I was a virgin and pretty depressed. Boy, sororities. Good thing you never ran into this guy. You might have been the last straw. Paralyzed you have to interpret him. So virgin, pretty depressed about the fact girls basically weren't looking my way. At the time, I convinced myself that this is the source of most of my unhappiness. I figured if I got in grade shape, became more confident, actually started having successful girls, I'd be good. So basically grinded my ass off. Got extremely shredded, probably as close to my dream physique as I'm ever going to get. And suddenly the attention from girls completely changed. I dated a few absolute smoke shows over a three month stretch. Nothing serious. But for those few months, I felt incredible. I genuinely don't remember feeling depressed at all. Eventually, though, the high wore off, the weird part is that I didn't lose any of the things I thought would make me happy. I still have the physique. I'm more confident with girls. And now that I know I can data track of women career wise, things are going well too. I landed the internship. I wanted next summer on paper, 18 year old me would look at my life now and probably think I had everything figured out. Instead, lately, I've started feeling empty. And like everything is kind of pointless again, not suicidal or anything close to that. No need to turn this into that kind of a we would be we would, you know, there's certain things that we get it like I would never ever feel. So right, I appreciate the clarification. Keep it moving. It's more than I spend so much time thinking, quote, once I get X, I'll be happy then I get X Y and Z and realize the happiness from achieving them was temporary. I know the obvious answer is probably that you can't base your entire happiness on girls, your physique or career accomplishments. When those were the things motivating you for years, what do you replace them with? Have any of you ever gone through a period where you achieve something where you were convinced it would make you happy, realized it didn't then had to figure out actually what gave your life meaning? How do you yourself out of that route without just picking another arbitrary goal and convincing yourself the next thing will find to be enough things, boys? Sometimes I wish I had a little more of this guy in me, you know, I think I swing the other way. You know, I'm definitely we've been over this. I'm a work to live guy and not quite a live to work guy. And maybe I need a little bit more of that guy in me. But I don't know, sounds like he needs to pick something that doesn't end, maybe like woodworking or, you know, golf is good. I kind of never ends. You know, there's if he's just constantly a goal, you know, setter and achiever, you need something that's a little bit more a long game. Sounds like if you have a kid by accident, though your whole life will get better. But outside of that, you know, I'd find something that's like doesn't have a clear endpoint. We've got that internship coming up next summer, so I don't know about the kid part. Yeah, let's maybe hold off for a few years to say if it happens. Sounds like he's a man about town. I'm kind of with you too, Kyle. Like I'm not, you know, I have, I kind of have a close group of friends that I that I talked to a lot. I think I've talked on the part about how I'm not like the best guy going out and making new friends. Like I kind of like have what I have. And I'm sort of intent with that. And maybe being content is not like I should go out more think about these things and meet more people. But I just kind of don't. But I think I guess I would ask this guy like what like does he know what he wants in life? Like does he is this job kind of like the thing that he this career path is that like the thing that he's always been dreaming of is it just a thing? Like is is the reason that you know, he started dating some hot chicks and now like it was all kind of shallow. Is that because you actually are yearning for some actual connection of someone that you love and that are interested in wanting to like spend your life with? Like that's these are all things that you could look forward to. So like plenty of life to live and things to do is not like you've checked off everything on your list. So I would just keep living your life and trying new things. And and I just kind of feel like it will solve itself ultimately. You know, like if you maybe he's not like specific enough within his own head about what he wants. But I think just like you'll kind of find your way in that way. Like you have so much of your 18 year in college, you feel good about yourself for the first time at least physically. You've had some attention from girls. You've got a good job. Like there's a lot of things positive things to check off of. But it's not like this is the end of the road for you. There's still so much more to do that I would just kind of keep on the same path. Yeah, it sounds like he's got some preconceived notions. Like he probably went to college thinking he was going to get laid and that's what everybody does. And that took him two fucking years. And then he did that and and now it's like, I thought it was going to be different. I feel like he's like he's waiting for something to happen that maybe just explore life, man. I don't know. But like is he going to get like is he like just saying it's like a finance thing? Like maybe he's like incredible internship gets like some big finance job. And it's like, man, I finally made it. And then you still feel kind of empty. Like, well, all right, what turns out it was the boat. The boat is what I mean. Now it's not good. Well, maybe you need like a side hustle thing. Like do you like that? I don't know. Like my buddy started like a wine, a natural wine business. He's a lawyer, but he imports wine over and opened up his own store. And he has this whole thing. And it's like, it's really fulfilled a part of his life that he didn't really have. And I think that's really cool. But you don't even you're not even old enough to like know what that is yet. Did you know what career you want? Yeah, you don't have a career yet or a family. So like there's just I don't know. I feel like there's a lot to figure out. Yeah, I mean, if the title is female or got jacked and people won't stop banging me, what do I do? The tone would be different. Yeah. Right. So we're all small as violent. Yeah. I understand this guy. Okay, because this is exactly what I've done. Yeah. Right. This is this is my entire free professional career and still going. And so whether it was an absolute peak loser mode, where I was like, if I just had something that meant something and I felt like I was building something, it wasn't just a job, it was a career, I could just feel a little bit of success. And so the first opportunity I would get it, and then I'd be like, okay, well, now I'm fucking broke. And this might be like a complete waste of time. And then from bartending to ESPN in four years, when I'm telling everybody I was going to do these things, even though I didn't really want to be in the media as much as I wanted to work on the other side, which we've already covered. And then that happens. But then I'm looking around ESPN and be like, you're the most worthless person here. So now I need the other thing. And then it's like, okay, well, now I get it with Scott. I'm like, oh my God, I'm the afternoon host. And I've only been here three years. But it's like, actually, we're not going to put your name on the show. And we think you're a sidekick. And we think you suck. Scott seems to like you. And so then I was like, okay, well, now I just need my name on the show. That took four fucking years. And then it still felt like sidekick mode. So then I go, all right, well, I have to break up with Scott. Scott was getting the full TV thing. Anyway, so it was like a completely amicable like you're doing this for your career because they're taking you back and featuring you on sports center, which is way more important than any radio show. I need to figure out what my next move is. And then it actually just worked out. He's like, well, you should just stay now and see what you can do. And so now things are good. I'm successful. I feel like I'm not a sidekick. But then I'm looking around being like, I wonder if I'm ever going to get like a mic and mic deal. I wonder if I'll ever get a colondale. I wonder if I'll ever get like these deals that these other guy will I ever be one of those guys. And then I leave ESPN, prove to them that a lot of people there that aren't there anymore were wrong. And I ended up getting one of those deals, which took forever for me. And then I just keep moving the goalposts every fucking time where it's basically about like, well, hey, I sold a couple shows. But now that doesn't prove anything unless you get a show made. And then if the show gets made, it's like, yeah, but it has to be good. And it has to be good. I mean, I want to be up there, thank you, thank you, echo Matthew. So the point is it's like it will either drive you crazy or you're so fearful that if you attack it any other way that then you'll become complacent. And that to me is like at least in my professional life. That is the epitome of like what I am, I'm afraid if I'm not like that, then that lapping will happen. That'll be like, oh, remember when that guy had a show. So the thing that makes me good can also drive me what I would tell you at 20 is fucking relax. Okay. That's the first thing. There's also some stuff that you're saying in there that maybe makes you a little predisposed to being depressed about things where it's that high. But then you're cycling through it and you're going, all right, well, now I'm going to steer myself back into kind of this mental funk. And that might just be a you thing. You might be really smart. You might be more mature than your peers and you're looking at things like through a bigger lens instead of just being like, hey, I'm in the peak moments of like the most freedom I'm ever going to have because it really is that great stretch of your life. And I know like this is a deeper thing, but I've talked about a little bit with life. It's like I think when you're younger, you kind of think that there's this moment of like once I get past this threshold, then everything's just going to be fucking easy-sailing. And I'm going to be happy. I'll have my career. Money won't be as much of an issue. I'll be with somebody I really care about. I hope I have this great relationship. I'm raising kids and all that kind of stuff. And I think really what happens is is you realize like there's these moments along the way, but it doesn't you're not just been coasting on this wave of fucking happiness to rest your life. And the other thing I would tell young people like, I know you're living in the moment of right now and what is challenging. But man, you get older and you start having like older person fucking problems where you're worried about a parent or You're losing a parent or you're sitting there trying to tell him you get to take a fucking license away or there's an Issue with a sibling like you will the majority of you and I'm not like we're not talking exceptions here But I'd say 90% of you in your early 20s, but like think these are end of days scenarios for you You would trade all of your problems when you're in your 40s and 50s for all the problems that you thought you had in your 20s But again, it's the first time you're experiencing this shit because it's kind of we were allured stuff So it's gonna be hard. You might not listen to me. Okay, you might not listen to me at all because I probably wouldn't listen to me if I were 20 but you could you could try to like Not think about things in these it's this grand way where every turn is some Oh my god. Well, what will this mean or what'll happen here or how come I'm not all this stuff just relax and Enjoy this moment because if you don't enjoy it now You're gonna be like Jesus did I wasted a bunch of time of of being bummed out about a bunch of shit that really didn't matter at that time All right, that'll do for the show.
