Whatever, let's get this podcast started. Welcome back to Not Gonna Lie. I'm your host, Kylie Kelsey, aka that lady with four kids that's always warning you to stay away from her husband. That's accurate. I've watched all seven seasons of New Girl at least eight times. That's not an exaggeration. And my version of self-care is driving by myself into the city, playing the music that I want to hear and not getting screamed at for it, and picking up food that I specifically want to eat. To be quite honest, I do not want to eat that. I drive into the city to get good city food. Typically, when I have a call, because if I know it's going to be 30 minutes, and I don't have to be on video, you're probably getting my undivided attention when I'm driving my car, because I'm not a sitting duck in my house for my kids to be like, hey, mom, mom, hey, mom, mom, can you get down the big stack, Ben? Mom, can you get me something out of the drawer? Mom, can you fill up my water bottle? Mom. Also, Wyatt recently figured out how to use the remote. So I had to hide that on a higher shelf. Because every time someone started talking, suddenly the volume on our living room TV was at 80. Do you know how loud 80 is? Oh my god. It straight up sounds like you are having the grand finale of Disney fireworks in your living room. It is insane. And that's what she's doing. And so I can't speak to other people in my house. It's very passive aggressive. It's so passive aggressive. And she doesn't say anything. She just turns it up. And she also knows that I'm going to take the remote. So she hides it next to her leg and turns it up and then just sort of looks at you like, did she notice that it's deafening so loud that you can't even hear your own thoughts? Did she notice yet? Yes, I noticed. Coming up in today's episode, I'm going to get honest about the only type of gift opening event I do enjoy. White elephants. And some of the funniest moments we had during the Eagles holiday party over the years. After that, I can't believe this is finally happening. And I'm getting to talk to her in person. I'm going to be joined by the lead actress from one of my all time favorite TV shows, Zooey Deschanel. I'm so excited. Oh my gosh, I cannot wait. This was such a staple in my house. I really cannot emphasize enough that it was like a, it was like a full family event. Like this was one of those shows that we could put on and no one in the house would argue. That's a big deal. Even Big Ed was sat. You see what I did there? Big Ed was sat for some new girl. I could even get him to finish the theme song. Who's that girl? It's Jess. This past week, I guess I can admit I had some business attending the March of Dimes sports luncheon because I was there to receive an award. He and Katie Ledecky were receiving it. Um, I would just like to throw out there right off the jump. I was fangirling so hard on Katie Ledecky. It was, I was not cool about it. I actually went up to her and said, I am such a huge fan. And then I immediately went into confession where I said to her, I have to admit, I have said that the one sport I don't know. It is so, I just don't, I can't, I, I understand that my husband was very, very good at his job. I understand that he is probably on the trajectory. And I'm saying probably because I am a superstitious individual. End up in the hall of fame to be in the presence of someone who has 14 Olympic medals. I think I was trying to play it cool. If I wasn't cool about it, Katie, I tried my very hardest. I will say the event raised $1.4 million to support maternal and infant health programs. Shout out to March of Dimes and all the incredible work they're doing. It was so great to be able to sit at this luncheon and hear about all of the families that were by their work and the research and programs that they are funding. It is so important, obviously, as someone who has experienced loss myself, who has experienced five pregnancies, it is very much an important cause. And obviously I am in full support of all of the work that they are doing. So I'm, I'm very grateful to have been able to sit there and learn more about it. Now on a much lighter, much more ridiculous note about this, event, there were also lots of clips going around of Jason and I dressed up for the occasion and the real ones. No, I can't resist a comment section. So starting with this one, I love it. How she's dressed like a normal person would dress for a big event guys. Normal person got dressed for an event, but a majority of the comments were people shocked by how I look when I'm not wearing sweatpants for once. Someone's like at Kai Kelsey, look at you with the flame emoji. Someone else said, Kai, don't you look good? All dressed up guys. It's strategic. Okay. If I wear sweatpants all the time, right? Then my, my baseline is dirtball. Okay. That's great. That's my baseline. Then when I have to step it up a little bit, okay. When I wear hard pants or heels, and then you guys will be like, wait, what does she? Does she got it guys? Sometimes I have to put on hard pants so that everyone doesn't keep asking. Why did that fine ass slice a man? Who are we kidding? That's not a slice. Why that fine asshole dessert ass of a man pick that. Sometimes I got to remind you when I want to, I can look a little put together, but you got to set the bar low. Low. Cause all that was, that was like a, that was like a blow dry. I don't know. That was a blow dry. Yep. That was a blow dry and a blazer. Easy. Honestly, fuck that. It's not for anybody else. It's for yourself. You got to, you got to dress up every so often just to be like, Ooh, yep. You can still do it. There it is. There it is. You can still actually use the things in your makeup bag. You can still use the things in your makeup bag. You can still use the things in your bag. There it is. You can still use a curling iron. There it is. You claim that you and your wife haven't gotten in a fight in 10 years. That's right. Are you lying? No, I'm not lying. Travis. I'm just asking. Shall we ask you the same questions? Well, it's only been two and a half years and you're right. I haven't gotten an argument. I've met this incredible woman that she's beautiful and smart and stands for all the most important things that I believe in in the world. And I, I can't believe how lucky I am. So what am I going to fight about? Yeah, you can use that if you want. I'm stealing it for sure. We had a couple of comments. I need at Kylie Kelsey, input with crying, laughing faces. Uh, someone said Jason likes rage baiting Kylie too much. Notice how my husband was oddly quiet during this segment. Uh, he did ask a couple of clarifying questions, but for the most part, his ass knew that he could not say that after almost eight years married, we absolutely argue. Now do we argue often? Not really, but we've definitely argued. Oh, for sure. I'm wondering if, They're trying. to classify an argument as like an argument right like a like almost like a yelling like to be fair i'm not a yelling arguer so like our like the arguments in our house don't they're not a yelling situation i just think that if you're married you live together specifically if you have children i think it gets like you're potentially having some sleepless nights um you you might have like varying degrees of patience with certain situations with your kids also i do think it's important to figure out what the definition is of the argument that's why i'm saying like is it a yelling or is that how we're is it like a yelling thing that we're not going to argue is it like uh is that different from bickering you're telling me you don't bicker or argue or maybe you do bicker but you don't argue i'm very confused about this to george clooney's credit i would not argue with them all either absolutely not i would be right behind her like yeah get them what she said i'm with her whatever she says we ride at dawn if she wants to come on this podcast you just come through girl she is far more professional than this Huh. Seems unlikely, but the invite's there. Next up, I've already briefed you guys on the goal that is the comment section, and I just stumbled across a Hall of Fame worthy one on a recipe video with the caption, what my future kids are going to be getting when they ask for a snack. There was a kneading of the dough, okay? There was a resting of the dough. There was a forming of the dough. They mixed cream cheese, something or other, put a fresh cut fig on top. They drizzled some honey and some pistachios. What you got to do when you see this kind of thing, run, okay? You run. You sprint as fast as humanly possible. You go as fast as your little fingers will get you to that comment section, and you start scrolling, and let me tell you, this didn't disappoint, okay? Have you ever met a child before? It's one of the first comments, okay? My son wouldn't eat a bagel because, quote, the whole tastes weird, so good luck with that. Nope. Nope. You cut it the wrong way, okay? This is on don't you ever cut triangles when they wanted squares, okay? If you know, if you have witnessed a crash out by a toddler because you cut a fig, you cut it the wrong way, okay? You are scarred for life. There's nothing that can bring, you are literally making a new sandwich. It's not, and people who want to be like, wow, let them have a tantrum. They'll eat when they're hungry. Yeah, you're right. You know what? My ears have had enough. I'm probably going to make another sandwich. Guys, here's the deal. I do just think, okay? I just think that we're all, as parents, we're all just fighting the good fight, okay? And here's the deal. If this woman has kids and her kids are patient enough to wait for the fig buns, power to you. My kids are all different types of eaters. Some days they like the pasta. Some days they don't. Uh, some days they don't. Some days it's the shape of the pasta that is incorrect. Uh, some days it is the wrong kind of cheese. It's crazy when you feed your kids something they're like, that's great. And they don't argue with you. Typically they don't even say that's great. They just don't argue with you. I don't know if that's anyone else's situation. It's not that my kids are like, wow, mom, this is delicious. And to me, that is like one of the sweetest, kindest feedbacks about a dinner presentation that I can receive. And our last video is one of the most heartwarming TikToks I've doom-scrolled upon ever. And it's a cause near and dear to my heart. Come here. Come here. Nope. That wasn't embarrassing at all. Now that I think about it, I get rejected a lot. Little bro flying by. Meanwhile, my goal is to get the kids to a space where they're independent of their parents and their parents are in a space where they can actually enjoy the rest of the haircut time. Come on. First of all, shout out to Vernon Jackson and the gifted event in Cincinnati for all the incredible work that you're doing for neurodivergent kids. On the gifted event homepage, it says, as a barber, I saw the need for a place where children with disabilities are supported during a haircut and an environment where parents or caregivers don't have to explain their child's behavior or apologize for something they may do or say. This is so important. This is so important to give families the space to do something that neurotypical families may take for granted. Obviously, if you take kids into a barbershop or to get a haircut, a neurotypical kid might be uncomfortable with clippers or have an outburst or it's not something that might be happening on a regular basis. So any kid might take issue with this. But specifically, the clippers touching your neck, the sound of it, the comb running through their hair, all of these things could be things that could trigger any type of sensory issue or honestly just be uncomfortable because it's unknown. It is so amazing that not only is Vernon taking it upon himself to create this safe space for these families, but he is also sharing it via social media to make sure that if you feel so inclined, you can donate, which is amazing. But the other thing is to show that he is using his tools to be able to interact with these kids in a way that is not only productive for them, but settling to their parents. Almost every single year on Black Friday or Cyber Monday, I would go online, find the best deals on some. Expensive-ass sunglasses. And I would get sunglasses. One year, I got really nice ones that were funky and cool. Sunglasses I would never personally wear because I'm just not cool enough. But they were these awesome statement sunglasses, and I got those on hella sale. And then I brought them for the white elephant. Otherwise, I would buy ones on sale that I would personally wear because they were a little more like everyday sunglasses. And they always. I feel like people were excited to get them because don't we all just lose all of our sunglasses? There was one year that, uh, I, someone brought, I don't even know what the bag is called, but it's a bag that collapses down. Someone will know in the comments that collapses down and was just like a standard tote bag, but it was very nice and very, um, low key. And I liked it and I stole it and then it got stolen from me. I was like, I won't watch it with you because that's weird. But I, but I, but yeah, it's cute because they love rom-com. Like these 10 year olds, like they love rom-coms. So I was like, yeah, I think they'll enjoy it. I think they'll enjoy this new film I have out, Merv. It's PG, so kids can watch it. So I was like happy about that. But yeah, I think, I think. I think she'll enjoy it. My son, no interest. He loves movies, but he, I think he wants mommy to be mommy and not like an actor. That's fair. He's fine with like voices in cartoons, but he's like weird. You're here and that's. Yeah. He's like, no. He wants a divide. Yeah. Fair enough. Exactly. Yeah. It also feels like every year there's a viral tweet about how someone didn't recognize you as Jovi with your blonde hair. Yes. Do you hear that a lot? Like, do people give you that feedback of forgetting or not realizing that it was you? Yeah. I have a face that changes dramatically with makeup and hair changes. So like hair color changes, like no bangs. I look like a different person. I think I feel like I would be a good CIA agent, like if I weren't an actor, but also I would, I don't have the nervous system for it. I wouldn't, but I do change a lot. Like if you put a wig on me, I really look different. Um, and I'm not tall, so you might not notice me. So that's where I can stick out like a sore thumb. Well, it's amazing because then everybody's like, who's this beautiful tall lady? But if you're short, you get to be like, you know, sneaking in, sneaking in. That's where Jonathan being tall, everyone looks at him and then they go, Oh, look, it's a property brother. And I'm like, you're ruining everything for me. I can be. I can be incognito. Hey, look at me down here. That's, you just have to do what I do to my mother-in-law in an NFL stadium, which is go, Oh my gosh, is that mama Kelsey? And then I run the opposite direction and just like sick everybody on her. Is she tall, short? She's tall. She's, she's almost, I would say she's probably 5'10", maybe 5'11". Okay. Yeah. But it's, it's great. I mean, it's a spectacle, but it's great for me because I don't like to be the center of attention. Right. just like, hey, is that Travis's mom? And then just run. Wow. Yeah. It's great. Everyone's tall in your family. Yeah. Except my mom, five foot two. Oh my God. My mom's five foot two as well. My dad's six two, and then my sister's five nine, and then I'm five four. So we're kind of like all different. You have sides of the family kind of. Yeah. My dad's side is all pretty tall. I think my grandma's like five 10 or something like that. So yeah. Tall and then my mom's family's short. So yeah. So it's Philly roots? The Philly roots of the tall is the tall. It's some in the water. Yeah. Or in the water. You get it. You get it. You are from Philly. Okay. Now, since we're talking holiday movies, you mentioned you have a brand new one out now on Prime Video called Merv. Yes. It just came out last night. So real ones, you know what to do. First of all, as a dog lover, thank you for this movie. Now I've been trying to get our Irish Wolfhound to be. A set dog. Oh my God. We actually got clearance to bring her to this set, but she's working on it. Okay. You know what? She also peed in our minivan this morning. It's a whole thing. Okay. She's also huge. They're very big dogs. She's very big. Which is also my love of Wolfhounds. Yeah. Merv with the scruff. Scruff. So cute. A wiry coat is so good. I love a wiry. A wiry dog. Yeah. Now, how was it working on set with a trained dog? Oh, he's unbelievable. A professional. He's such a pro. He actually works at Universal Studios in Florida. He can do so much cool stuff. He's a rescue dog. His name's Gus. He's such a good boy. We were doing press with him this morning and he was sitting there. Perfectly. And there's like, they had like a treat by the camera, but he's just such a sweet dog. He's very calm. Like he's special, you know, like we actually would have to, cause he kind of doesn't get like, you know, dogs will get like excited. Yeah. He, he kind of, he's more like dignified, you know? And, and so when we'd have to get a dog to be kind of like wild and dog-like, like the kind of dog that pees in your minivan. Yes. We'd have to bring in his stunts. We'd have to bring in a double whose name was Captain Chaos. And Captain Chaos was like. Is that his government name? I don't know. They called him Captain Chaos. Got it. Okay. Cause he would, was chaotic. Yeah. One of my favorite movie genres is definitely the holiday rom-com. Yes. Then this is. Love Actually. For you. Love Actually and the Holiday are all timers for me. Yes. What was it about Merv that made you want to do another holiday rom-com? Well, I didn't even realize it was a holiday. When I read it, I just thought it was a rom-com and I love rom-coms and I just, I don't think people are making enough of them. And I'm like, this is a genre. I love, I love to do rom-coms. I love that it has like this mix of like, like it's like character driven. It's, it's like a piece where you can really like have, you know, interesting characters. And then the, the fact that it's at the holidays, to me, I thought of it like this. When you think of a guy eating alone on a Tuesday, you're like, that's kind of sad, but maybe you won't see it alone. Then you think of a guy eating alone on Christmas. Then you go, oh my God, I feel so bad. Infinitely sadder. It heightens your emotions. Like talking about like Love Actually and the Holiday, like I love those films because they have this Christmas element, but they also have like a depth to them. Yes. And I think this film, it's very funny, but it also has a depth to it that I, that I really connect with. And I, I, I. I think for me, makes the rom-com so much sweeter, you know? Yes. Now, speaking of animals, just from a quick scroll of your TikTok, I can tell that you also love cats. Yes, I have three. Mm-hmm. I love my kitties. I want to take every opportunity on this podcast that I possibly can. Yes. To try and influence my husband. Yes. Get cats. To get a cat. Oh my gosh. You, okay. I'm going to tell you, I have like super affectionate cats. Love this. We had two dogs that we loved, a Chihuahua and a Yorkie, and they were Jonathan's when we met. Mm-hmm. And they were very old and then they passed away, which we were very sad and had a little hole in our hearts for our, you know, animals. But we didn't want a dog because they're another dog just because it's a lot to take on. Yes. So I'd always wanted a cat, but my parents were allergic when I was growing up. And so I'd never gotten one. And then my daughter, our daughter had been asking for a cat since she was like 18 months old. Like basically since she could say cat, she'd be like, I don't like dog, I like cats. She's like, I like cats more. Like it was so cute. And her Christmas list every year would be like, cat, cat, get a cat. It would be like summer bucket list, get a cat. Like everything was cats. And so finally I was like, can we get this? Jonathan was a little bit like skeptical about cats. Can we get, you know, can we get a cat? Can we get a cat? And I was like, I think we need to get two because they need to keep each other company. Then we ended up with three. But they are. That's cat math. Yes, exactly. Cat math. They are super affectionate. They're so sweet. Jonathan loves them now. That's the key. So much. He's a total cat dad. Love it. And the thing is, they are so low maintenance. Okay. Now, I would love it if you could put out a plea to my husband. Okay. If you could do it directly. Direct to camera. Just like a quick. Okay. Just like, hey, Jason. Yeah. Cats are it. Hey, Jason. Cats are it. What I want you to know about them is they're basically like dogs, but they're, they have liquid bodies. They have like liquid bodies, but or like maybe like a dog with a slinky as a spine. They're super fun and athletic and they play fun games. And they're so sweet. And I'll send you guys a video of my cat dove. She like rolls over and like every time if I try to leave, she'd get up against the door and like roll over and it's so cute. And she licks my hand just like a dog. So you got to get a cat. They're so sweet. Very good. Two. We got to get two. You can't have one. You can't have one. You get two or three. It was no different having a third cat. No different. I love this. Also, like dogs are so great, but sometimes they can be overwhelming. And if they're big and they're jumping up a lot, it's like cats are totally different energy in there. They have a lot more calm energy. What I love about cats too. Oh, here's another reason, Jason. It's cats are great for kids because it's taught. My son is like tons of energy and it's taught him like it's taught him how to be calm in a great way because the cats only will come up when you're chilling, when they're chilling. And my daughter's a bit more chill than my son. And so it's great. It's great to teach kids how to regulate their emotions. So my son would get in and he would be like so excited to see the cats and he'd be like, hey, and then they just run away. But then when he walks in calm, then they'll come up and climb in his lap and cuddle him. The first time they came up and cuddle him, it was like I was about to cry. It was so sweet because he was so happy. Oh, I would cry. Yeah. It taught him. I would cry. Like, you know, he has that like boy energy. Yes. Like super, you know, kind of like up and excited. And they rewarded him for that. For the calm. They rewarded him for coming in calm. Are you kidding? Yeah. I would cry. Yeah. That would get me. Yeah. Yeah. I was misty-eyed. Okay. Now shifting gears to the main event here. Okay. For me as a fangirl, as I mentioned earlier, I've watched New Girl. I can't even tell you how many times. All the way through. It's one of my favorite TV shows. I love this so much. So first and maybe most important question for you, when are we getting more? I don't know. I will totally do it. No, I'm in. I've said it. I'm in. Let's do it. Yeah. Let's do it. Oh, please. We'll have to do it. Jake doesn't, Jake Johnson doesn't really like to like leave his house much. So we might have to like film it at his house. At his house. New set. I think he would do it if we filmed at his house. One day a week. This can, this sounds super doable. Okay, great. It's doable. Great. Please. Dear God, do it. Is there going to be a reunion maybe? Also at his house? We don't have anything planned, but like, again, I'm up for it. Okay. Yeah. All right. So I just need to like rally the troops. Just rally the troops. Got it. Yeah. I'm also a sucker for bloopers and the bloopers you guys had from the show was. Well, we were so tired. Let me tell you, we work 16, 17 hours some days. Is that, that's not normal. Not normal. We work like twice a normal work shift. Yes. And then have to drive home. Um, and I remember there were times where we were like, we'd been doing those hours and then we'd do a six day week or something and it would be like 6am on Sunday morning. And then we'd have to be like, they'd be like, we have a pickup from last week's episode that we have to like cut in and we'd be like falling, like literally falling asleep or like, like our body, your body just like stops working at a certain level of tiredness. It's like, there's not enough coffee in the world. Actually, since you're a mom, you'll get this. When I was pregnant. with my daughter and I it was like before I could tell anyone and we're doing one of these like crazy marathon night shoes and i couldn't you know they were like you can only have one cup of coffee i was like i don't know how i'm gonna get through this i was drinking orange juice okay not the same get the sugar up the sugar caffeine yeah caffeine was like no wow yeah it was a lot that must have stung yeah but so the bloopers are great because we were unbelievably delirious we're delirious and we did have so much fun you could tell we had so much fun how hard was it to not laugh so it's it's funny because i remember first season like we we got better at it first season i remember everyone cracking up like crew everyone and i remember the boom mic that we had this this um boom operator named val and then i would be like oh val's laughing because he's shaking and he'd be like like that was the best feeling i'd be like we got the crew to let like if the crew laughs you know it's great you know it's funny like funny is if people laugh and it's a validation so it was very nice that's amazing you guys uh also had so many amazing guest stars over the years oh my god yeah um does anyone stand out as your favorite i know you were just talking about prince well prince taylor swift um i mean rob reiner and jamie lee curtis um i mean we had so it was crazy the list is so impressive i mean quinta brunson came in and did a tiny part before she did um abbott elementary um we had like amazing it was our casting directors were incredible they just they found people before they were well known too so that was that was pretty cool oh olivia rodrigo was on when she was like 13 she was just a child actor and i remember her because i was pregnant with my son and my daughter was a baby like in my trailer and i was like and she she kept asking me questions about uh my daughter i was like this kid's so sweet she keeps asking me questions and then i was like and then later when she became famous you're like she looks familiar yeah brought up all these things i'm like that she was like a child actor on my show that is like all the lot of people it was it was pretty cool yeah yeah so if we bring it back yeah we have to have everyone come back that would honestly be very cool it would be very cool yeah let's do that yeah seems very good um queen emma my producer is asking uh oh what episode was my favorite and i don't think i feel like that's like picking your favorite child oh what yeah what's your do you have a favorite i don't do you have any like do you have like a top 10 or anything or a top five um when when jess and nick get together when you guys get together that was like oh yeah that's it was such a build it was such a build that that i remember shooting that episode that um like everyone came it felt like everyone was on set the other time actually here's another good um guest star we had tay diggs on and he took his shirt off and like all of a sudden everyone was on set and i was like wait we had like people from accounting i'd never met and they were like they were and i was like oh hi i was like i'm zoe like who are you like oh i'm in accounting they're like um i'm like why are you here and they're like um we are dated oh my god okay that's actually amazing it was yeah it was like we had a full like audience that day um but yeah during that cooler episode we had everyone just wanted to be there when nick and jess got together we were trying to figure out like the best way the most i was like what if i walk away and he grabs my hand i was like that's better you know and then everybody was trying to come up with like the best kiss you know yeah an episode i love from the first season every time i go back to it i'm like oh that was so much fun it feels like a movie almost was um the wedding episode natasha leone another amazing guest star we had on that episode the best part is like when i still re-watch it yeah i still laugh out loud like the parts that made me laugh they still get me they still like sneak up on you i love that it's the best so great i think it's like my adhd i can like disassociate enough that it just leaves my brain i have adhd too it's great yeah we're having fun it's called object permanent no object permanence right yes that's why a lot of my snacks live on the counter otherwise i forget them and then i don't eat them me too well i realized it's like if i don't see it it doesn't exist um i i i realized that thing is like when people be like well i got into a habit i'm like no i have to see it i'm like no i'm not that's why all the things must be out yes that's why my skincare is like takes over my side of the sink is so ridiculous my side is now on jason's side it is a whole there aren't sides anymore it is just a full full all the stuff yes jonathan's like um he's so nice and he'll be very tolerant of my skincare and he'll be like um are you like gonna maybe edit some of see my scenes but i didn't always see like stuff with winston or you know like if he had storylines without me or stuff with schmidt or nick if they had story or cc like if they all had storylines
