Maybe she likes your nail polish. I was still working 16-hour days. I was still wearing high heels. My OB at one point was like, "I'm calling Shonda." I was unaware that calling Princess Catherine, Princess Kate, was offensive. She told me that she's telling dad that she's asking for a stuffed cat with a wink. Julia has my heart. I think she's killing it. At one point, the director comes up to us and says, "You know what, ladies? We just need to go one more time." Julia looked at the director and she said, "We will go. We will go as many times as you want if you take off your coat." Not going to lie, few things hit harder than when you get to girl talk with your three-year-old. Let me set the scene. She gets in the minivan after I pick her up from preschool. And I say, "How was your day?" She starts trying to tell me about a friend that she met and how she had brown hair and a dress on. And I say, "Was it a pretty dress?" And she says, "Yes." She restarts the story and says, "The girl with brown hair. And the pretty red dress." And then we're just gossiping. And by gossiping, I mean telling lovely stories about how that friend was really nice and they played together in the dress-up closet. That's girlhood. Let's get this podcast started. Welcome back to a brand new episode of Not Gonna Lie: A Wave Original, brought to you by Allstate. I'm your host, Kylie Kelsey, adamant partaker in Gilmore Girls' fall. And today, we're going to be talking about girlhood. I'm your host, Kylie Kelsey, adamant partaker in Gilmore Girls' fall, which might have just been swapped out for Scandal Fall. I wonder why. Anyway, if I were watching Gilmore Girls, I would think, "Oh, no. Is it Jess? Is it Dean? Is it Logan? Who is it? Who is it? It's not Logan. I know that." Fictional hostess of an NFL Sunday watch party where I'm absolutely panicking because everyone's coming over and they want to watch every game. I'm so sorry that you have to keep seeing that. We were watching games yesterday because go Uncle Trev and go Chiefs, and my goodness, I'm sorry. Guys, I'm sorry. And most importantly, the mother of a seven-year-old, oh, no, no, oh, no, that's right, tomorrow is Wyatt's birthday. It's so rude. It's so, honestly, it's just, at this point, disrespectful. I don't like it. I'd like it to stop. And it's interesting. It's interesting that she keeps getting older, and I'm still 24. Wyatt did pick out her birthday theme. I have a list of things that she has informed me are imperative for her birthday celebration, one of which is a puppet show, so wish me luck. She does want a chocolate, a chocolate cake, and then vanilla cake, and then, and with a buttercream, but then with blue ice, I'm unsure. Any big gift, she's asking, surprise, surprise, she's my child for a cat. And she told me that she's telling dad that she's asking for a stuffed cat with a wink. Coming up on today's episode, my favorite cuddly, sometimes scaly segment is back. It's Adoptable Animals of the Month. Our friends from PSPCA are about to surprise me with three new pets. I'm excited. I'm excited. I'm excited. I'm excited. After that, somehow this episode will get even better because get your big ass bowls of popcorn. Can I get it? Can I get it? Get your big ass bowls of popcorn and an even bigger glass of red wine because it's handled. That's right. We got Olivia Pope herself, AKA B-icon. She's the one that's going to be talking to the incredible people I get to talk to. I'm in places. I have no business being talking to people. I have no business being. It's Kerry Washington. Okay. Calm down, Kylie. I already spoke to her and my armpits are sweaty. Was I nervous? Yes, I'm always nervous talking to the incredible people I get to talk to, but also she's delightfully funny and stunning. But first, let's start things off with our real one comment of the week. First up, an entry for the comment hall of fame and a reminder that maybe there's actually no such thing as too much information on this show. Someone commented, "Oh my gosh, girl, you made my week between my mom in the hospital again and my cheatin' ass husband who thinks sending naked photos to other people, oh, my gosh." And I'm like, "What? Are you kidding me? You're kidding me?" I'm like, "What? Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me? I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. listeners or regulars that really, they get it. Okay. This woman gets it. We're so happy she's here. And we're also so happy to know the details of the messy week that she had. We hope that your mom is feeling better and fuck your husband. Am I right? Okay. Just if I had to say it, if you're watching this, Shannon, leave his ass. And lastly, I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume we have some incoming rage bait. Gosh, why you do this? Princess Catherine is too refined and beautiful to be subjected to your cursing. You'll need to clean up your act. First of all, you're correct. What? What? Yes. Agreed. I don't think that anybody owes me anything. Let me emphasize that. I would love to speak to the princess of Wales. Okay. Because of many reasons, she is an incredible woman. She has children. She played field hockey. She battled cancer. There are so many things. That I would love to speak to her about. Do I think she has time to hop on this podcast? No, I do not. I don't think that. Would I curse at her face? No. Here's the thing. I love a curse word. I love it so, so much. I love curse words. You guys know that. But at the end of the day, I am respectful of the situations that I am put in, at least being respectful. I am respectful to the people I am speaking to. I don't go out in public and just let the F-bombs fly. Okay. Because I like to be respectful of the individuals around me. If I don't know that you're into that, I'm not going to start chucking curse words at your face. Guys, here's the deal. I love learning. So I was unaware that calling Princess Catherine, Princess Kate was offensive. I didn't know that. Now I know that. Now I will proceed accordingly. I apologize for the mistake. I would like to refer to people in the most respectful way and how they feel respected. So Princess Catherine it is, or the Princess of Wales, I apologize. I will get that sorted immediately starting now. All right. That's it for real one comments of the week. Next up, let's get to scrolling with Doom Scroll of the Week brought to you by BJ's Wholesale Club. First, it's October, which means type A people everywhere have gone all out with perfect Halloween decor. Luckily, we have Nikki Marie holding it down for us. Type C's show us, show us, show us her porch. Ghost. Yes. And a mom, a ghost and a mom. Guys. What more could you ask for, really? We have three ghosts that go in the front lawn some years. Some years there are ghosts. Typically, there's at least one pumpkin on the porch until those, we call them doofuses in our house, until the doofuses get to them. Those are the squirrels. Squirrels, that's the best snack. Do not come in these comments talking about, oh, do you know how to get the squirrels not to eat your pumpkins? You need to wash them in this and then coat them in. How many times I got to tell you, I am type C. I am purchasing that pumpkin. I am bringing it home. I am taking it out of the car and carrying it to the front porch. If it makes it to the front porch, we are lucky. Penny does want to be Layla from Teen Beach Movie because she wants to wear red lippic. That's literally the red lippic and high heels. Oh, and a pink jacket. Those were her bullet points. In order, some point she mentioned that Layla wears a bra for sure. And I was like, homie, I think not. And she said, okay, tank top. So, Benny's costume is actually figured out. I just have to order it. One down, three to go. Next scroll. I'm not sure I've related to a clip more than this one. I feel it in literally all of my bones. Queen Emma, the clip, please. It says, why are moms overstimulated? And their child's foot is literally, oh, God. It's always touching them. Okay. No, no. Last night, just last night, I was in the kitchen trying to make dinner. And no matter where I went in the kitchen, I had a child holding onto my pants. Now, this is overstimulating for a few reasons. First of all, I want to go places in my kitchen while I'm cooking without a resistance shoot on. Okay. I don't need you dragging me in the opposite direction. Also, it kind of tugs your pants down, which, oh, gosh, gives me the shivers. And then to top it all off, the cherry on top, is when she tries to squeeze herself between me and the cabinet to push me backwards and tell me to pick her up. Also, whenever you sit down on the couch and then all of a sudden it's ones on top of you and then the youngest sees that and then they get pissed off because they're like, that's my mom. And then they're on top of you. And then the older ones are like, hey, I was sitting there. And then suddenly you are under three of your four children. Now, I want to preface this with, I would say 75% of the time, I'm like, hell yeah. Put me at the bottom of my child dog pile. Okay. 1,000%, 75% of the time. I'm like, get over here. Get in here. Hurry up. That 25% of the time, I need you to stop touching me. For the people who are like, you can hold your hand while you're cooking. I do. I do. For those of you who want to come in with snarky comments, my husband tried. Okay. It was not a dad day. It was not a dad day for Finley and Kelsey. So you can take those ideas and shove them right up back in your ass where they came from. That was aggressive. And I'm standing by it. And lastly, football is back and so are perfectly curated game day spreads. I can literally never come close to. It's never going to look like this. I made these black garlic chicken wings. Of course you did. And these oven Parmesan fries from a Kitchen Cookbook. Along with this antipasto pan pizza. What? I mean, look at the crust all the way around. No, I see it. And I made these pretzel tots with a chili crisp mustard and this whipped ricotta with olives, crispy shallots, and almonds. What are you scooping it with? With some toasted bread. Yes. It must feel so good to look at your finished product and have people come and enjoy your food and your spread. I mean, outstanding. It's not. It's going to be me. The good news is, is that I can still do a spread. It's just probably not going to be oven baked Parmesan. You know what I mean? So the good news is I have the support of many. Nana will help. Jason will help if he's around. The girls will help enthusiastically, but unproductively. The other supportive, the supportive cast, in this situation is BJ's for same day delivery. And I'm not just saying that, um, last weekend, I ran out of paper towels and I needed more grapes for lunches. The crispiest, crunchiest grapes. Let me tell you. And then on top of that, we need snacks. Everybody knows we need snacks. You need sneaky snacks for games. So we got them delivered right to our door. And I'm going to guess what? I'm going to do it again. Maybe even this afternoon, I might not be doing these homemade wings, but I could get my favorite chicken fingers, which are the just bear lightly breaded chicken fingers. They have chicken fingers and chicken bites or chicken nuggets. I don't know what they're called. You got it. You got it. I can't give you everything. And when all else fails on crustables guys, if it's good enough for the you. Also, you have to eat the uncrustables when they're not fully thawed. There's something so good about when the bread is thawed, but the, but the peanut butter is still a little bit firm. That's the best time to eat uncrustable. You know how you warm it up to that. You're not expecting me to say this, put it under your leg. Yeah, you're welcome. And guess what? You got two legs. Just a thought. All right. We made it guys. We made it. Let's get to our adoptable animals of the month brought to you by all state. If you would like to support the PSPCA, you can do so by either adopting these animals or you can donate, uh, at the PSPCA's website. We love to partner with the PSPCA. SPCA. There are lots of adoptable animals in many different shelters, foster homes, and rescues across the country. Please feel free to look into your local rescue. Find out if there's any adoptable friends there that you might want to bring home. Enough of that though, because that's housekeeping. This is Brownie. He is a Great Pyrenees mix. Maybe. Or maybe he's just a Great Pyrenees. He does look very Great Pyrenees-y. He has big old paws, so you know he's going to be a big boy. Puppy! Hi puppies! And don't tell him he may or may not have just two brain cells in there rubbing together, trying to make a spark. He's going to be huge. And so one of the things about Great Pyrenees, much like any other giant breed dogs, is that you should have experience with big dogs. Oh, he could just stay. Foster him. I can't wait until Jason catches on to the idea that when I start fostering animals that none of them leave. It's such a shame when none of them get adopted when we foster them. Hmm. Weird. God, his freaking eyeballs going the opposite directions is unreal. Look at his speckly nose. He could get some cats. You could guard them. It's right in there. Do you want to be a Kelsey? No? Okay. I get that. Too much estrogen. Oh my gosh. Are you kidding? Look at this puppy. He looks so small in person when his head on here looks huge. He's literally like maybe like three to five months old. He was rescued by the animal law enforcement team. He came in with a bunch of other animals. He came in with a bunch of other puppies. But he's the only one who hasn't gotten a home. Only him. Last man standing. Are you kidding me? Guys, get him. I'm making a dog shed you can live in it. He's like, the fuck? I am not. Do you want to be part of our zoo? I'll let you go now, okay? I love you. And I will forget it. Guys, this is Bun Bun. Look at her. You are so pretty. Oh my goodness. Okay. She was rescued. I feel like I have to take my, we just had a very playful moment and now we're taking it down. We're calming down. Okay. She's colored like a ragdoll cat. Interesting. Um, she does have, she has, um, ongoing treatment for her congenital defect affecting her hind leg. This that's what this wrap is for. Okay. She has a little, little wrap. Oh, there it is. A little wrap back here for her foot. Don't worry about that. She's you'd think, wow, does that make her imperfect? No, it does not. She's actually more perfect. Are you fucking kidding me? Oh no. I think I want a bunny. The girls like bunnies. Should we see if Benny's home? I might have to let my mom come pet her. Is her head resting on my arm? Is that going to make me cry? Oh no. We shouldn't be allowed to do this segment, but like, let's keep doing it. Hi, there's a little animal. I just want you to pet real quick. It's, um, it's not what you think it is, but you can bring Benny. She promises to be quiet. Hi, boo-boo bear. Come feel her gentle. Isn't she so soft? Come feel her. Oh, look at it. Oh my God. Wait a minute. It's backwards. What? The fact that she stays when you pet her. Again, I cannot explain how that is like so exciting to me. She's so freaking cute. Oh, I can't get over that. You got to pet her really gently. Go ahead. Oh my goodness. Is that not one of the softest things you've ever touched in your whole life? Yeah. That's insane. I mean, it's a soft, one of the softest things I've ever pet in my whole life. And I'm 34 years old. You only have three years of petting things, or the pets more. Her name is Bun Bun. How cute is that? Cause she's a little bunny. Do you think she likes your, your nail polish? Show her your nails. Go like this. Look, Bun Bun, yesterday we painted our nails. Okay. Bun Bun, you are perfect. Perfect. Perfect. And I just know that someone's going to come and adopt you. Okay. Everyone, this is Rocky. Rocky is five years old, a Salcata tortoise. Now that's the only thing stopping Queen Emma from taking this tortoise home because she's a turtle girl. Turtles, tortoises, two different things. Don't be ridiculous. Now I'm basing this solely off of the Galapagos tortoises that we had the pleasure of meeting at the Philadelphia zoo. Is there a way to pet her? She has nerves. She can feel that we touch her shell. Yeah. And she's so cool looking. It's crazy to go from Bun Bun to this. Rocky needs someone to come and adopt her who's going to take her lifespan into consideration. So she's five years old. She has potentially 145 years of life left in her on average, which is insane to think. So someone is going to have to consider that. There will be a generational interest in this animal. Do you hear her breathing? Did you know that someone, the right person, can adopt Rocky? That means that she can go home and live at their house. You think I'm lying to you, don't you? Should she go live in Emma's house? Oh, what if Simon wants a tortoise? If you're babysitting Simon, will you babysit Rocky? Yeah. Perfect. Look at that. We've got all our care lined up. I'm going to try my best not to feed her the mic, but to get some ASMR of her breathing. She needs to go to a family that's invested in having her for many, many years, but also, it needs to be a tortoise-experienced household. She's going to make you work for it because you should. As Kerry Washington would say, you should earn it. How about that, Full Circle? Gosh, they're so cool. This has been the adoptable animals of the month brought to you by Allstate. Get out of here. Next up is Kerry Washington. The real ones already know about my love for BJ's Wholesale Club, and football season, but you might not know all about my favorite things that get delivered from BJ's to get game day ready. We're talking Skinny Pop. We're talking Elio's Pizza, Uncrustables, Ritz Bits Cheese Crackers, Pirate Booty, Chomps. Wyatt, every single time she sees a Ritz Bits Cheese Cracker, it's going in her mouth. She loves it. Now, I like Chomps because they don't get stolen by kids. I love that with BJ's, I can save so much compared to a regular grocery store because BJ's isn't just for the big stock up once in a while. I rely on it for our groceries every week. I've mentioned it before and I'll say it forever. My favorite part about BJ's is same day delivery. I can get anything I need in as little as two hours right to my front door. Yes, please. How is it that this is our first conversation with each other? That seems so strange to me. I don't know. Let me tell you. I just absolutely love, and I always admit this, because I always have a not-going-to-lie situation. I'm going to give you my not-going-to-lie right now. Not-going-to-lie. What's your not-going-to-lie? I have been waiting to watch Scandal. Oh, I love this. I couldn't tell you. Just for the right moment. Because I'm telling you, us getting to have this conversation today pushed me to start it. Oh, welcome. You can catch me in the depths. I'm so happy. Thank you for watching. I mean, it's no surprise because of how loved the show is. Yeah, we're so lucky. And how incredible the crew was. I mean, Shonda, at work again. The whole thing. Yeah. Well, okay, I'm going to try and read your intro. Hopefully, I don't mess it up too much because I don't know if my coffee kicked in yet, but we'll try. She's the Emmy Award-winning queen you know from Scandal, Save the Last Dance, Little Fires Everywhere, Imperfect Women, and soon her brand-new movie, Animals, out on Netflix on October 9th. She's also a fellow mom, a fellow retired NFL wife. We're going to get into that. And now she's officially, not going to lie, Kerry Washington. Welcome to the show. Thank you. I'm so happy to be here. Oh, my gosh. I'm so excited. I mean, I already told you I'm diving into Scandal. It's amazing. But the other connection right now that we're in football season. We are. I was so excited when I realized that our husbands played together. They were in Philly together. Yeah. So for like two years they were together. And I asked Nnamdi this weekend, I was like, did you, because I didn't know, I was like, did you guys play together? He was like, yes, we played together for two years. He said when he went to Philly was actually your husband's rookie year. And he was like, I just remember being so impressed with him because as a rookie, you don't always see guys who have that much maturity and leadership at such a young age. I thought that was so nice. I wanted to share that. That's very sweet. I was really hoping you were going to come in with some dirt because we love to just find, find something to dish. Yeah. Just like go back to my husband and be like, really, you did that, you know? No, but I have to like, Nnamdi doesn't, he's not like freewheeling with the compliments and he has really high standards when it comes to like leadership and maturity. And so I was, I meant it means a lot for him to say that. Well, that's very kind. Does your husband reflect fondly on his time in Philadelphia? Like, did he enjoy the city? Yeah, we love Philly. I actually, yeah, we root for the birds. We do. I root for a lot of teams because of him. He played for the Raiders for over a decade and retired with the Raiders. So that's a team that I really love. But we loved our time in Philly. We love the Eagles. We root for the Eagles. I also, because I grew up in New York, so Philly was somewhere we went. We used to go to the Penn Relays every year when I was a kid because my dad ran track. And so we did our annual trip to the Penn Relays and we would go to the Franklin Institute. They had this incredible exhibit with this heart that you could walk through as a kid. It's the best. I love that. Love that museum. So yeah, Philly holds a really special place in my heart. I loved our apartment in Philly. Oh my God. Well, I have so much to ask you about today, but I feel like I couldn't not get right into Scandal, which we already dipped into because now I'm in it. Now I'm in it. You're welcome to text me along the way. I'm going to warn you, you're on a crazy roller. ride. It's going to get nuts. Just strap your seatbelt on, stay in, enjoy the ride. I'm excited. And honestly, like I said, all of the hype that I have heard for years and years and years about this show, it makes so much sense. It's all making sense. But I do have, I was told that I needed this and I needed this. Oh, I love it. It's super early in the morning for red wine. Is that? Is that something else in there? It's a Shirley Temple. Okay, good. I was like, girl. I have this because- Popcorn, so good. For those of you who don't know, I have a big bowl of popcorn and a glass of Shirley Temple, of course. I've heard that it's called the Olivia Pope dinner. It is. That's what she did alone in her apartment. I love that so much. I loved it too. I'm sure you've seen these TikToks. We have one right here for reference. The size of this glass is outstanding. So good. Yes. Amazing. Yes. Whole bottle and then whole bag of popcorn. Now, how do you feel about this being one of the lasting legacies of the show? I mean, I'm also, it's the face she's making that like grimace people that horrible meme of the grimace, which actually, to be honest, came later more for me. Like that was a anyway, it's a very long explanation, but it's, it's crazy. It's crazy that she holds a space in people's imaginations so firmly still. It's kind of humbling. I don't know. It's, it's wild. Yeah. Do you have your own Olivia Pope dinner that like, if you got home, what would be your drink and giant snack of choice? I don't really drink. I don't either. Wait, I know it's all fake. All the red wine is fake on the show. Do you like, do you like popcorn though? I do. I love popcorn. Oh, okay. I was going to say that might be harder. You're fashioning some fake popcorn. I really love, this is so crazy, but I really love the brownies from Goop. Oh, okay. I'm into this. So that's like a, and I also love, do you know the company Siete Foods? They do like gluten-free chips. So any of their, like their cassava chips or their tortilla chips with guacamole that I make, that's definitely a comfort snack. Guac is such a good answer for this because I, I genuinely think it's kind of like deviled eggs. If you think too much about how many avocados you're eating, you might get grossed out. No, you can't. Like you can't think about that. You can't. You cannot. And then you just keep scooping. Yes. I truly think I could eat a vat of specifically homemade guac. Yeah. There's another phenomenon online called mom dinner. Have you seen this? No. Okay. So it's basically like when you feed your kids mac and cheese and then mom stands over the pot and like eats the scraps of the mac and cheese. Yeah. This is, that's what I've related this to. When I saw Olivia Pope dinner, I'm like, this makes sense. This is like mom dinner or girl dinner, you know, like we just, we love an excuse not to eat a, an appropriately portioned meal, you know, full meal. I mean, I'm literally thinking. I gave myself last night at dinner after cooking dinner for the fam, how I like will clean the kitchen while continuing to eat the vegetables that I just. I took the pot of pasta to the table. Yeah. I took the little, I took the little sauce, pasta to the table. My three-year-old looked at me like I was crazy because I usually don't take it to the table. I think she was more surprised that I was sitting down. That was crazier to her. She was like, good for you. This is progress. You know what, mom? Go ahead. Take a seat. How old are your kids? And you have four? Four of them. Next week, I will have a seven-year-old, which is very exciting, but six, five, three, and one. Wow. You're in it, girl. Yes. How are you doing a podcast? Sometimes I can't put a sentence together, but we have a really great editing team. King Brad, he makes it seem like I can form a thought. That's cool. A beautiful thing. Yes. You're like really in it. How are you doing? It depends on the day. Today? Okay. Everybody got to school. We only had one minor crash out this morning. And with three out the door to school, I feel like those are pretty good odds. That's huge. Yeah. Wow. Parenting is no joke. It's no joke. It's not. It humbles you. It's no joke. I think that's one of the greatest gifts of being a mom is how humble it requires you to be. Truly. They're just, they have this degree of honesty that is refreshing and will knock you off your feet. Yeah. Check you. Yeah. It'll check you. Hard. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But I feel like that's good for me, particularly in this business. Like it's, it's so good that my kids don't care about any of the, like they could care less about Olivia Pope. They could care less about a magazine cover, a movie premiere. They're like, what am I having for dinner? Help me with my math homework. Like, where are you going? Like they're just, that's, that is their world. And I love that. Yeah. I love that. Plus, if they say the humbling things at home, when people say it to you outside of the house, it doesn't hurt nearly as bad. You're like. I'm like, you can't hurt my feelings. My son already told me to change my outfit. When I get comments about like, wow, Kylie's pregnant. And again, I'm like, no, no, excuse me. My three-year-old already told me my belly's squishy. Okay. You don't need to comment on it too. Okay. Jiggly, squishy. It's sweet, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah. Now, um, one other thing that I wanted to bring up about scandal and specifically on TikTok, I have one more that I would love to play because this one you commented on. Oh, you said, well said wrong answer. You do not see him standing here. Because if you didn't see him standing here, you wouldn't be able to comment on it. You wouldn't be able to comment on it. Because if you didn't see him standing here, and I want to know how he got here. Was he arrested? Were you arrested? No. Oh, he wasn't. Why was he taken out to the street, put in a patrol car, and brought to a police station? Because that sounds like an arrest. I mean, the tone, the inflection, nailed every line. It's a testament to the writing. It's such a testament to the writing that people are still doing these monologues a decade later and like perfecting them. I wish I was as good as he was. Like that casual. Look off to the side. I'm like, I don't think I was that subtle. I think I want to go back and like redo the scene to be as good as him. It's so good. Now, according to the internet, I have one of the top quotes here. I'll read the first part and see if you can finish it. It says, I'm not the girl the guy gets at the end of the movie. I'm not a fantasy. If you want me, earn me. Yes. The internet loves that one inappropriately fucking so. Right? Outstanding. Because they should. They need to earn us. They have to earn us. It's so good. It's so good. I think the thing that people love about Olivia Poe, first of all, she's so messy, right? Like in her work professional life, she really knows her value. And I feel like a lot of her journey as a character was figuring out to how to own her value in her personal life as well. How to be as in control and powerful like in her romantic life, how to have agency and self-confidence. How to have confidence in her love life as in the way that she did in every other room and every other situation. Yeah. When I started playing that character, I understood enough about what power looked like in the world, but I wasn't yet a producer. I had never directed television. I didn't own a production company. I wasn't married. I didn't have children. Like she, she didn't have a husband and children, but to learn how to be a leader. In my home, in my career, in my life, to be like number one on the call sheet, or as she would say, like to have to, like, it's my name on that door. Like she. taught me how to step into my power and into my, yeah, she taught me how to, how to not be afraid to be in power, in my power. And I'm so grateful to her for that. Cause I literally like walked in her shoes and figured out how to be a woman with more gravitas and independence and agency to have more of a voice, to be more fearless, to tell more truth in my life. All of that I think was like osmosis from playing her. Like she just, she taught me how to be more of a woman. Speaking of being a woman, you were also pregnant twice during the run of the show. Twice. You can see cause the bags and the coats get bigger and bigger and bigger. The lamps. Yeah. The lamps that I'm hiding behind, the boxes I'm holding. I begged Shonda Rhimes to let Olivia Pope be pregnant because I felt like I was violating or like betraying the character. Right. Cause I was like, there's a walk. And I, I was like waddling down the hallway. I was like, how can I be this woman when my body's doing something totally different from what hers would be doing? But that was really good for me in two ways. One was I actually, I worked for, with a coach, one of my best friends, who's an incredible acting coach, Colleen basis. I worked with her for my audition, but then I stopped working with a coach for the first couple of seasons for the first season. When I got pregnant, I was like, I don't know how to play her in this body. The other thing was it really taught me like Shonda's refusal to let Olivia Pope be pregnant. It occurred to me once I became a mom, that the reason she did that was because there is so much vulnerability in becoming a mom. Like when you become a mom, it's that Barack Obama quote of like, suddenly your heart is outside your body walking around. Like you love this thing, this person so much. And you're afraid. And particularly being the mom of a black child has like additional complexities and fear associated. And she was like, Shonda knew that Olivia Pope couldn't be that vulnerable. She was a superhero. Like she couldn't be that vulnerable in the real world. So she didn't let her become a mom. She actually made the choice on the spoiler, but she makes the choice later on down the road to not be a mom. Were there challenges within filming where like you were obviously growing a human being is not the easiest task. I am the person who will raise my hand when I say I did not enjoy being pregnant. I'm very grateful to have gotten pregnant, but I did not enjoy it. Did you enjoy being pregnant? Did you feel good? Was there ever any challenges while filming where you were like, got to go for a minute because I have to pee? For the hundredth time today. So yes. And to all the things like I, I, I enjoyed being pregnant, but I also thought it was super weird. Like I wasn't like romantic about it. I was like, this is very cool, but also I feel like a walking science fiction movie. Like I'm growing a creature inside. So it was disorienting. I also had, like my acne flared with my first pregnancy, which was, you know, you're like on a show that millions of people are watching. And I was like, what do I do? Um, but also you might relate to this. I, it shifted my relationship with my body because before I had been pregnant, if I had had an acne flare, it would have felt like the end of the world. Cause I was like shooting the cover of a magazine or walking a red carpet and doing this TV show once I was pregnant, I was like, well, this pregnancy is the most important thing. So like everything else, we're just going to have to figure out, like, we're going to have to figure out the, the cleanser for my face. That's non-toxic. That'll maybe keep, and I'm just going to have to like go to the dermatologist more often. And I'm just going to have to like, I'm just gonna have to figure stuff out because this priority is so clear to me. Like my number one job right now is growing this human, but also I loved the show and loved our audiences and felt a huge responsibility to not let the show suffer. So I was still working 16 hour days. Um, I was still wearing high heels all the way through my entire, I mean, my OB at one point was like, I'm calling Shonda. Like you cannot be wearing these heels. And I was like, I can't not like, I have to, I don't know how to be her without them. Um, yeah, I mean, they did a good job toward the later end of my pregnancy of helping me to try to not work more than 12, 14 hour days. Um, but that was the job. And also it took me, you know, how when you're pregnant, you have brain fog, right? Like you're cause you're half your brain is focused on doing this thing. So I used to time out how long it would take me to memorize a monologue. It literally took me twice as long to memorize my scripts. So I'd be like working these long days and then going home and like trying to learn the material, but it took me, but all of that to say, like, it was worth it. I love my kids. I love the heart one. It will, as I look back talking to you right now, I'm like, that's the hardest I will ever work because of the physical challenges, the emotional challenges of being pregnant, the challenges of being on the show. Like, I don't think I'll ever have to work that hard again in my life. Cause I'm not going to be pregnant again. Um, but I have no regrets. I have no regrets. The idea of putting in 12, just talking about the minimum side of what you're talking about, 12 to 14 hour day, going in high heels, going home and then learning the next day's script. Yeah. When I tell you my pregnancy brain, yeah. So intense. There were days where I truly, like I would, I would have to, my husband would laugh at me and I still occasionally have to do this. And sometimes some days are better than others. But when I was pregnant, I would leave, I would leave a room to go get something. And I would come back and be like, I don't know what I went in there for. And then I would go back into the room when I remember, it would be like a four, a four rotation of back and forth and back and forth before I was like, you know what? Fuck it. I can't need it that bad. If I keep forgetting it, which is an insane take. It wasn't that I ended up with the item. It was that I gave up. I was like, I can't need it that bad. If I keep forgetting, it's not possible. Here's the thing though, that you still were so high functioning, right? Like all of your pregnancies, you've also raised other kids at the same time, right? As of the second pregnancy, right? You, you, you adapt. I think, yes. And your capacity grows. Like I remember, I remember looking at my daughter when I was pregnant with my son and thinking like, okay, my lap is getting smaller as my belly was getting bigger, but like my heart was getting bigger. So like, I knew that I was, that as much as I love this kid, I was going to be able to, I love all three of my kids so huge. It's just like my heart just kept getting bigger and bigger. I remember walking some red carpet when I was like nine months. I think it was the Oscars. I was like 10 months pregnant. And, um, and I remember stepping on the carpet and like holding in my belly. Cause I had so much muscle memory of like, when you're on a carpet, you like hold in your belly and stand up straight. But like holding in my belly was doing nothing. I had like a giant basketball in my abdomen, but I was like, I can relax. Yes. There's something about pregnancy that taught me how to relax and surrender. Yes. You have to surrender. And thank God pregnancy teaches you that because so much of parenting is about surrender. And like this, this person is their own person and it's my job to give them guardrails and boundaries and help them grow. But like they're, I got, they're their own person. Right. No, that, that, that makes a lot of sense. So basically you were just, even more of a bad-ass woman than you show on screen because you were busy building humans and pretending like you weren't. And that's really hard to do is what you're saying. It was hard. It was hard, but we're all, I mean, any woman, show me any woman who's a mom. And I'm like, she's a superhero. You know what? We do it. We do it. We do it. And we trudge on with the girls fully back in school. That means life gets pretty hectic. And let's not even talk about all the germs. Yuck. The good thing is the CVS health app helps me. My healthcare needs all year round. And it's especially helpful for busy parents and caregivers because it makes the whole healthcare experience simpler and more convenient. The CVS health app helps me get in and out of the pharmacy fast. I can pop in, pull up and scan my digital barcode at the pharmacy counter. And they know just what to grab for me. It also keeps track of my healthcare to-do list. So I don't have to, plus I can stock up on my back to school items like tissues, hand sanitizer, and more. It's so easy when you get your back to school list to go in there and get the hand sanitizer and the tissues that have been requested by the classroom. Because I will provide the things for germ prevention. Absolutely. You want two? I'll get them from CVS. I also love that I can refill, track, and manage my prescription needs anytime. The CVS health app lets you check your prescription status on the go. And it'll tell you the moment your prescription is ready. And if you have little ones at home, you can choose same day delivery and it's at your front door in as little as three hours. Go to cvs.com slash app to learn more and download the app now. Well, fans are going to get to see you in your next powerful role in Animals out on Netflix, October 9th. Without giving away too many spoilers, what made you want to play Abigail? She's a mom, you know, to like be in, to continue the conversation we were having. She's a mom and she faces like a nightmare, like every parent's nightmare of what might happen to your child. And that, it's a thriller. The film is a thriller. It's a very exciting, a like edge of your seat kind of thriller. So I, I was very drawn to that. The main reason why I said yes in the beginning to even reading the script was the director, because I'm a huge Ben Affleck fan. I love Argo. I love The Town. I love Gone Baby Gone. Like, I just think he's such a great director. And I knew him like casually, like we have friends in common. So we kind of knew each other a little bit. But I had, I just have so much respect for him as a director. So when he reached out to me and said that he had this project and it was a thriller, was I available? And I was like, well, I definitely want to read it. And then I knew I would be acting opposite him. And I loved the script for all of these reasons that like, he said to me when, when we jumped on the phone, he was like, you know, it's a thriller, but in a lot of, and the film is about a lot of things, but one of the things that it's about for me is about marriage. And I was like, well, that's interesting. And sometimes, sometimes as a woman, you'll hear that when people just like, want you to do a movie. They're like, no, it's really, the wife is really important. And then you read it, you're like, she has one scene. But this was like, this really was when I read it, I was like, oh, this really is about marriage and about family and about, about love, you know, and about community. It's about so many things, but it is also this incredible edge of your seat thriller. So there are many reasons to say yes. And I'm so happy I did. Now, I don't know if I can share this yet, but I'm going to, and we'll see if we can keep it in. One of the lines in this movie, and I quote is, if you tell me again, what is an opinion about my son's life, I will rip your fucking face off. Staying right on that mother track, how does it feel to deliver a line like that? I love you so much because that is my favorite line of the whole movie. I had to say that line maybe 50 times. It never got old. I, love that line. And also Steven Yeun, who I said the line to is just like a gem of a human being and an actor. And every time I got like more and more aggressive mama bear protecting my son, every time I said it, like to be in his face, I'll rip your fucking face. Like I just, I could say that line. I want that line like on my tombstone. I want that line on a t-shirt. I want that line like written on a cake. I just, yeah, it's one of my favorite lines of the whole film. So good. I really hope we get to keep this. Because it really did speak to like the heart of what it is to be a mom who's protecting your child. Like you, you would lift up a car, you would, you go to the ends of the earth. And this person, this character that Steven Yeun was so brilliantly playing was like trying to be all like strategic and sensible. And like, there's no sense to be had if my child's in danger. Like, no, don't talk to me like that. Yeah. Rip your fucking face off. Yeah. Every once in a while in my work, I get to show what I like to call my original zip code as a girl from the Bronx. And when I have those moments, it makes me so happy. Yes. Now, as a millennial, I have to ask you about a classic. Save the Last Dance. I mean, are you watching Dancing with the Stars? Are you so excited? In our house, we call it Dancing in the Stars because that's what my three-year-old calls it. Cute. Don't you love those little mistakes they make? I'm writing them all down. I literally have a running note in my phone of all the things. I wish I did. I wish I had done that. We still, in my house, call the remote control a marote because that's what my daughter called it. Like, can you pass me the marote? It was the commote for a while in our house. So sweet. My oldest used to, I saw a, today is, today, we have an Eagles game this evening. We're Monday night football tonight. So occasionally you'll see like jerseys out and about. And one of the kids that was going into school this morning was wearing my husband's jersey. And on the way back from school, I was literally thinking to myself how our oldest used to say, you used to ask her, what number is dad? And she would say, he's 60 number two, instead of 62. That's also in the notes app. 60 number two. That's so cute. And it's sad because you think to yourself, like one day, stop saying it. Like they auto-correct. They just, I know they just grow up. She now knows it's 62. It's that thing. You've seen that thing on TikTok or Instagram of like, you actually don't know when the last time you're going to pick up your child is. It killed me. So now I'm like giving my 12 year old piggyback ride. So I'm just like, it can't end. I'm like, do you want me to, do you want to piggyback ride to your room after volleyball practice? If she's tired, I'm like, I'll piggyback ride you to your room. You're like, today is not the day. I'm going to be like 102. Like, can I pick you up? I can't. It's so, oh, it's sad. I know. But, but, but you know, what's not sad? Julia Stiles on dancing in the stars. So exciting that she's dancing in the stars, right? Are you rooting for? She's doing such a good job. I was going to say, are you rooting for Julia or are you rooting for a bunch of people? Do you watch the show? I don't, I, I, I'm where I don't watch it right in real time. I will probably, because my daughter watches old episodes. So we'll probably catch up. That's what we do. Yeah. We'll catch up. I'm sure. But there's a lot of people that I really love this season. Like I'm a Ciara fan. I'm also like such a huge Guillermo fan. I love him. I love him. Did you see? So apparently I don't really know the Lord that much because I really get all of my information, my additional information from TikTok. I saw, I think Whitney, his partner is pregnant. Is this correct? I think I'm getting enthusiastic nods. I saw a TikTok that said after Guillermo's first performance that Whitney was going to need to take her prenatals because she was going to be there longer than they thought. Oh, oh, which I love. I love it. It's like, he's surprising and everyone, and he's going to be the fan favorite. He's adorable. I just want to put him in my pocket and take him home. I don't, I actually have an upcoming Jimmy Kimmel appearance to support animals, but we're like, not sure what time we're shaping. We're taping the show because it depends on if Guillermo's in or not. He might be busy. He might be busy. So we have to delay. Yeah. So good. But Julia has my heart. I've known her forever. I think she's extraordinary. I think this is the least that could happen given the fact that she didn't really get to go to Juilliard in real life. So like, this is a moment. It's so exciting. Are you aware that she's received some shade for her moves? Oh, about her dance? Oh, about her dance? Save, yeah. In Save the Last Dance. Oh, yes. Oh, yes. Now, do you think she's using that as fuel? Because I hope so. I hope she's using it as bulletin board material. I think she's like, for anybody who doubted me, look at me now. Like, you can laugh all you want, but look at me now. I love it so much. So good. Now, one scene from Save the Last Dance that popped up on my For You page is the makeover scene in the car. It's so fun. So fun. Your line in this is, it's country, and you look country in it. And you're country in it. How underrated is that scene? It's so good. I will tell you, my favorite thing, my favorite story about that night is, you know, we have a brief scene outside the car when we get out of the car. We shot that scene in Chicago. It was so cold. And the entire crew, we had a lot of crew, same crew members who had shot. We shot the film Fargo. And they're all in their Fargo gear, like down coats from head to toe, mittens like earmuffs masks like they're so bundled up and we're in these like cute hollywood nothing outfits yeah we're going to the club so we're doing the scene we're doing the scene we're doing the scene we're freezing you can see the air coming out of our mouths my feet my hands were numb at one point the director i love this director thomas carter he's so lovely the director comes up to us and says like you know what ladies we just need to go one more time and i learned so much in this moment because it was my first studio film julia looked at the director and she said we will go as many times as you want if you take off your coat perfect so he was like okay he took off his coat that was our last take he was like this is insane we were like yes it's insane thank you for noticing yes yes it was it really taught me about advocating for myself on set really really genius yeah if we're gonna suffer so are you take off the fucking coat just understand what you're putting us through like for a moment think about us as human beings right like it was really powerful and i think about it even even as a producer now when i ask an actor to do something i'm like wait let me make sure that i'm not being unreasonable it was such a powerful moment so she deserves all her flowers she's a diva she's amazing that's outstanding now you're like you said a mom of three two girls one boy yes correct and how old are they um i we have a 20 year old and a who's my bonus baby and a my daughter and then a 12 year old and a nine year old boy and how are you enjoying this phase now at their current ages i love it i like all the phases i really do i know some people are like oh i like them when they're bitty bitty i like them when they're older i'm just fascinated by them at every age and i'm really i'm an only child so the sibling thing is really fascinating to me i really love seeing all the different dynamics of birth order and how these two are close in this way and these two are close in this way and the three of them are so good together and it's really fascinating to me how how having a sibling informs and changes your life i do think that that is i think that there's difficult phases of parenting like some phases are more difficult than others some are just more intensive than others right like it's not like right now we're in a very like nobody's getting up and getting our oldest will get cereal by herself it might end up in a mess but like she tried good for you for letting the mess happen that's super important that's what dogs are for um clean the floor please yeah great um our five-year-old is still very much like she wakes up in the morning she comes in to find us and so is our three-year-old and i mean the one-year-old's probably next to us at some point in the night yeah it's we're in a very like we have more difficult phases but kind of like what you're saying is like i don't necessarily think that i have a favorite like i know that i love love love when they all have started talking when they you get to hear their voice and you get to hear their version of their voice and you get to hear their version of words and those moments are incredible but then to watch our seven almost seven-year-old navigate friends at school and sort of stepping into her confidence and um just the other day i said something i don't remember what i said but i made a comment and she was like we don't talk about our bodies like that because it was something where i was like get it i was like something about it had to be like that my pants were tight or something and she was like we don't talk about our bodies like that and i was like this is such a win for me yes yes that i finally repeated it enough that it has sunk in and you are now giving it back it's moments like that where i'm like how can you not enjoy watching them become themselves yeah it's so like it's so much fun and to get to be there the whole way privilege it's such a privilege right to watch somebody evolve and come into themselves and like i remember you remember there's a point in their childhood where every single thing they say you know where it came from you know like who said that what what they were watching or which family member are they repeating and then there's that period where they start going to school preschool daycare and suddenly they come home and you're like where did that come from right like even just that where you're like oh i no longer have a singular control over what you're doing and i'm like i don't know i don't know i don't know you're exposed to and i just i think it's such a privilege to get to witness and guide and hold space for them now you've shared that you're a stepmother to your oldest you called her your bonus baby um i feel like step parents rarely get the appreciation and the spotlight that they deserve what's been the most rewarding part of being a stepmom i'm just so lucky you know what i mean like i just the privilege continues right yes like to control my smile i like i'm just so lucky to get to love her and to know her and to to be on her parenting team you know like i i feel so blessed and and the relationship that my three kids have with each other is so beautiful and such a gift and i think a lot about you know i wrote this book and i'm like i'm like i'm like i'm like a memoir a few years ago called thicker than water because i long story short found out that my dad is not my biological father and that moment of my parents admitting that to me like really changed the my family immensely but one of the things that i write about in the book is like it doesn't matter he's my dad like this idea of you know having to be blood related to somebody it's it i realize actually when i knew the truth about not being biologically related to my dad it actually brought us closer it didn't make us further apart it didn't estrange us from each other it actually made our relationship more honest and intimate and that is one of the greatest gifts of my life is being able to have that relationship with my parents to be in truth with them while they're still alive that's such a beautiful way to take your own experience and get to apply it to being a stepmom and knowing that like just because you are not related by dna that you still choose every single day that that person is your child yeah and that you will parent them and love them and pour into them in the same way that you would no matter what yeah that's so beautiful i think these kids choose us you know what i mean like the ones that come through us the ones that wind up in our lives in other ways like we're so lucky to just be on this earth together family is so it's so precious and it happens in so many different ways and um so i feel really grateful now i also want to congratulate you on more exciting news your show street you grew up on is now officially a weekly podcast i mean all the kids are doing it kylie they just give anybody a mic out here out in these streets okay this is actually it's weird because it's actually our fifth season but it's our first season as a podcast so it's been a a digital series for a few years i started it during the pandemic my production company is named after the street in the bronx that my mother grew up on simpson street and so i just started interviewing people that i love about the streets that they grew up on and in our first season it was like michelle obama and eva longoria like just people that i was like what are you doing it's a pandemic will you come talk to me about the streets you and um and so now we're like an official podcast with 20 guests this season um and weekly coming out weekly it's it's very exciting and it's hard work that's why i can't believe you're doing this with four little itty bitties well you know when i get to talk to incredible people like you i it really it'll draw you out now people ask me this and i've ended up speaking my answer into existence um okay michelle obama being the answer at the time and then i've never been sweatier in my entire life in this exact chair i'm not kidding it was like two hours after and i swear i still had pit at some point i had to wipe my lip sweat away it was a problem it was a problem did it go well i think so she's incredible i genuinely think like she could make anybody like you know those people who just have that way about them that sort of yes make their team look better like i always equate it to like team sports i know i have had teammates that like just make the rest of your team better because the way they bring everybody up that was her so i think i could have literally said three words and she would have just she would have taken the reins and saved me from myself she's special she's amazing i'm sure you were amazing as well that's very kind of you i wouldn't know i was sweating and blacking out you're like i blacked out yeah i actually have no idea what happened um now do you have a dream guest he's gonna kill me for saying this but my dream guest is namdi oh perfect we have had my husband on this podcast twice now three times how did it go three times three times did he behave well was he a good guest he was um we did it i say that only because did he behave um no he never behaves uh that's part of his charm and he ended up using a candy heart we did a valentine's day episode he used a candy heart to write on the wall of the studio as if it was chalk so no he did not behave but it was it was so much fun to get to sit down and in an interview style conversation i mean we talk every day to then get to talk in a more question answer interview style it was it was kind of fun like it was a new adventure to navigate well i hope that he comes on because that would be very exciting so hopefully we manifested it maybe we peer pressured him into it a little bit maybe he
