Kylie & Brenda Song on Starring in Jason’s Western, Being Disney Adults & Macaulay’s Re-Proposal | Ep. 65
66m 40s
Kylie Kelsey opens her episode with a lighthearted yet candid reflection on her daily life, including being woken by children and dogs, and her husband’s increasingly bizarre side projects—like a Western film and NASCAR-themed thirst traps. She humorously recounts her reluctant participation in a short Western film, where she resists cowboy aesthetics and accents but ends up embracing the Delco dialect, leading to a memorable “Dickhead” moment. The segment shifts to a “Doom Scroll” of viral TikTok trends, featuring a popular “missing person” challenge where kids describe parents with exaggerated honesty, and a viral moment spotlighting Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty, who has become a social media sensation due to his bold, unapologetic personality. Kylie promotes Seventh Generation as an eco-friendly, effective cleaning brand and Lulu Lemon for their durable, comfortable, and postpartum-friendly apparel. She then hosts a lively interview with Brenda Song, a fellow mom and passionate sports fan, discussing their shared experiences with parenting, the authenticity of *Running Point*, and Brenda’s deep-rooted superstitions surrounding the Lakers. The conversation also explores nostalgic ties to Disney Channel shows and the generational gaps in parenting, especially in how boys and girls engage with play and household routines. Throughout, the tone remains warm, humorous, and reflective, blending personal anecdotes with broader themes of motherhood, fandom, and family.
(suspenseful music) Wave. Not gonna lie, I was woken up last night, three times by children, and three times by dogs. I always say that they huddle up before bedtime and decide who's gonna be the one that evening. And last night, I think they miss their huddle. (chill music) That was props. We'll see if I can form a sentence and let's get this podcaster. (chill music) Welcome back to Knocker Alia Wave, original brought to you by seventh generation. I'm your host, Kylie Kelsey, beginner level golfer. And that's generous because I have played one round of golf and I think I quit halfway through because I wasn't technically cleared to golf that soon after having hernia surgery. I can speak French, even though I hate to admit it. It's not that I necessarily hate to admit it. It's actually that Jason likes to say that I speak fluently, which I do not. So that's the discrepancy issue. Queen Emma wants me to speak French right now, but I'm not going to because There you go, you got it, that's all I have. And it's another week, which means another thirst trap of my husband on the internet and this time, it was the NASCAR edition. Mm-hmm, once again, for audio listeners, my husband is wearing a jumpsuit, a pit crew jumpsuit. That's how I'm going to describe it because I actually know nothing about NASCAR. I plan to learn about NASCAR when I watch whatever the hell he was filming. Now, I think we all know the more side quest my husband goes on, the more thirst traps are going to circulate because everybody loves to film whatever he's doing. So I'm not going to address each one because honestly, I think you guys have earned the right for, let's call it the honor system, meaning you can look and that's it, literally. No, that's it. You can look, but be respectful, okay? Because if you're not, realistically, someone's going to write you out in the comments and they're going to tag me when they do it. So just know you, I got eyes on you. And women supporting women. Thank you for the women who are. Shouting Kylie, come get this. When people are, they're misbehaving. Jason likes to tell me about these things in a very vague capacity. I had no, I had very little idea of what my husband was doing down there. Let's be real. My brain could not move on from quotes. Once my husband said he was going to Talladega. 'Cause every single time he said Talladega, my brain said Knights. Dear baby Jesus, I can't help myself. All right, now that we've addressed the second Jason thirst trap in as many weeks, which is wild, isn't it? Never mind. I can focus on today's episode coming up. My husband somehow convinced me to star in a short Western film. Now people have seen it. So I guess I got to talk about it, even though I would really prefer to pretend like it doesn't exist. And we can just have a mutual agreement that doesn't exist. And we don't have to talk about it 'cause nobody's seen it, right? I guess wrong. We also have an elite doom scroll for the real ones featuring the new missing person, parent trend on TikTok. Perhaps the worst baker of all time and why more fans need to fall for gritty. Are gorgeous Philadelphia Flyers mascot. He's so handsome. After that, I'm gonna be joined by someone I've been so excited to talk to. I've loved her in everything from the sweet life to new girl to running point season two. Plus, she might even be a crazier sports fan than me. We'll see, it's Brenda Song. Oh God, I'm no business. But before we get to Brenda, let's start with a couple quick NGL announcements. First, if you haven't already, make sure you watch my latest episode of FAFO right on our NGL YouTube. I need you guys to pretend like I didn't look like that playing basketball. It was a little scary at the top of the dome. More so on the inside of the building than it was on the outside. You guys need to tune into that episode to see what I'm talking about. The other thing you need to tune in for is the most incredible conversation with Governor Shapiro and First Lady Lori Shapiro. They are doing amazing things to focus on women's health, maternal health, postpartum experience, period products for women in government buildings and schools, making that a standard. They are putting money into research about the mortality rate for black women when it comes to giving birth. There are so many important things in this episode and I really, really think that you guys will enjoy it. Next, today may be the last day of April A.K. Autism Acceptance Month, but the work of the Eagles Autism Foundation is year round. And guess what? It's not too late to register for the Eagles Autism Challenge on May 9th. You can either be a virtual participant or you can actually show up and participate in person. There is a 10 mile bike ride. You can do a 5K walk or you can do a one mile sensory walk. I am so excited to be there. Again, I have not missed a single Eagles Autism Challenge. Queen Emma put in the rundown, are you gonna run? And that's funny because no. I don't run unless it's for something or from something and there's nothing to run for because it's not a race and there's nothing to run from. Well, I can run from my children, but they'll chase me. So, nope, I'm good. Oh, also, some people might have seen the more viral fundraiser that Jason puts on and our family puts on for the Eagles Autism Foundation which is what is called Shorebirds and that is the Gas Bar Tending event at the Ocean Drive over the summer. That will be June 24th this year at the Ocean Drive in Seattle City, New Jersey. These are two different events. The event I'm talking about on May 9th, the Eagles Autism Challenge is a lovely, family-friendly experience. Shorebirds at the OD is a lovely adult experience. And I think the best way to describe it is look up the clip that we discussed last year of my husband ripping off his breakaway pants into a speedo and anything that gives you all the information that you need. All right, let's move on. I guess this is about time we brought back places Kylie as some business being brought to you by seventh generation and somehow in a span of a week. We went from cowboy Jason to come, girl me. No. Yeah. And of course more cowboy Jason, fine with that. And that's because as the real ones may have seen, I was somehow convinced to start in a short Western film with my husband for Garage Beer. Did I want to do it? Everyone all together. Hell no. Okay, but do I love my husband? Hell yes. And that is how I end up in these situations. We should have a running list. There should be a compilation of all the things that Kylie has done that Kylie wanted nothing to freaking do with. And her husband, her husband, convinced her to do late night show announcer Christmas album Garage Beer commercial. There has to be more. Put them in the comments, guys. Oh, new multiple times. Thank you, Queen Emma, appearing on new multiple. Oh, I said choice. Appearing on the other broadcast multiple times. Sometimes with less than an hour warning, which is wild behavior. We're not playing the clip. Oh my God. Oh, no, I'm going to look at I'm tearing. Okay. No, no, you don't believe me. Check it out for yourself down in the old abandoned salute. No, no, no. Oh my God. No. Oh my God. Don't do that again. We got cold beer in this town. But that buster bow Allen, he controls all of it. Bow Allen, he hates cold beer. No sweetheart, he loves it. How do you know? I've seen it with my own eyes. How's it keeping it cold? Down at the town bank, he turned that vault into a nice box, keeps the key around his neck. Listen, if you don't believe me, go check it out for yourself. Down in the old abandoned saloon at the edge of town. That's where him and his guys go when they want a 40. Let me explain how this accident happened. There is a clip somewhere. It came across my for you page on TikTok. There is a clip somewhere of my husband doing some degree of questioning answer. I have no idea what this forum was. I refused to go to the premiere of this because I didn't want to be, oh, add documentary to the list. Oh, yeah.
Oh God, okay, I did it. There's a clip somewhere on TikTok of my husband doing a Q&A at the premiere of this. And he acknowledges the fact that I didn't wanna do it. But how we came to the Delco, Philly, Delco, whatever that accent is, we were in the dressing room but before we got started going over lines which I had never seen before, which was great. That was fun. We were going over lines and they said, "Well, you need an accent." And I said, "I'm not doing Western accent. "I'm not doing it, you can't make me. "It's not happening." And because to be quite honest with you, it took a lot of convincing for me to even put this hat on. Okay, I have a problem with Cowboy, Cowgirl hats, whatever you wanna call them. I have a problem with Cowboy and Cowgirl boots. Now, it's a personal thing. I don't have a problem with other people wear them. I actually quite like them on other people. But to me, it feels very Dallas Cowboys adjacent. And that's how big of a man you go, "Oh yeah, and that's how unhinged I am." Anyway, then I made a joke about doing a Delco accent and they said, "You're doing that." So, Jordan the director and Jason, he decided. And then I just went with it 'cause I was already there and I was already dressed. Is Dickhead one of the more fun things to say in Delco accent? Dickhead is, "I actually don't say it right." And I'm actually surprised that more people in the comments did not come to me in this way. Dickhead in Philadelphia and Delco, specifically really Philly, you are supposed to be quicker and less clear. Like Dickhead, that would be more appropriate. The I said, "Dickhead, straight up." I should have said asshole because when I say asshole, it comes out far more Delco than I did Dickhead. So that's one of the many reasons why I can't watch it back. Jason said he might recruit you to do another one, but make it a rom-com. No, 'cause here's the problem, okay? At the end, I thought I was gonna get a sweet kiss for my husband and instead I get my head shoved out of the way for a bottle of garage beer. So you owe me a smoochy kiss. How about that? Okay, now we're all, now we're all moved on. We've all moved on and we're gonna stay with that because we're done with that now. Queena would just said totally and I know she's lying. These all deserve cold beer. That's it for places Kylie has some business being brought to you by seventh generation now. Let's get right into doom school the week brought to you by Lulu Lemon. First up you guys know how I feel about TikTok comment sections by now. So much so that you guys actually tag me in videos and say run Kylie, run to those comments. And this is yet another prime example of a video you watch and then hall ass, okay? Just move it. Move it or lose it. Right to the comments, Queena, I'm at the clip, please. - Wait, hold on. Guys, don't mind Tony. Tony's making a cake. - Don't mind Tony. - Wrong side. - It says bottom and sides of the pan. It says bottom and sides of the pan. What is it? It's just not the bottom. - Oh honey, it is the bottom. But that bottom is the outside bottom and we need to coat the inside bottom. You know, the one that's actually gonna touch the cake batter. Just a thought. I love his effort though. And so we run, we sprint, we get there into the comments and we find him with the instructions, say, chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. And for my audio listeners, there is a little picture of a human being inside of their fridge (laughs) actually sitting in the fridge, outstanding. The next comment says, "Tony baking the cake at 120 degrees." Oh no, that is a photo of a cake pan lifted to 120 degrees, aka the cake is nearly on its side. This feels very closely related. It's the clip of fold in the cheese. Well, how do you fold? You fold it in. This feels like that in a different font, although he was wrong. So maybe it's not, oh God, it's so good. Oh, someone hit me with one of my favorite quotes. You're gonna look at me and you're gonna tell me that I'm wrong? He said it with his whole chest. This is the bottom. They said, "spray the bottom." He said it. This is the bottom and I'm spraying the bottom. Am I wrong? She wore a crown and she wore a crown and she came down in a ball game, though. God, I love it. I'm a little concerned for Tony. I'm curious if Tony understands the other instructions. Did you guys ever have to do the exercise in school where you wrote the list of directions to do what you would assume is a simple task? I do believe hours was making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I feel like you're in that exercise. You're a teacher typically. We'll then take the list of directions and point out the faults, aka the spaces in which you did not provide enough direction. I think Tony should start testing those directions. Tony needs more. He needs more instruction. It's okay, Tony. Not everyone's meant to bake. I think we just give that one up. Sorry. All right, next up, kids all over TikTok are proving just how brutally honest they can be about their parents with this new missing person trend. Oh no. Can we now have the clip, please? If I was missing and I needed to describe me, you needed to describe me to the police. What would you say? She likes McDonald's. She has a hair that turned from blonde to black. She barks pretty loud, so I think you'll smell it out. I think this can I will. You're doing everything wrong. Just be quiet. She's very beautiful. She has hazel eyes. She has brown hair with highlights. She has a bang and butt. OK, dad. Oh, you'll probably catch her at McDonald's eating. OK, first of all, this is the most first child second child display I've seen in a minute. The first child said, I know how to handle this exercise. And the second one said, I'm a roast the shit out of you for the next two minutes. Straight. That's crazy. The difference in the description is not-- those are two different human beings. I think that if I asked any of the girls to describe me, that why it would take as an opportunity to say that I am mean. And probably something about my butt. I'm not 100% sure, but I do think that would be the case. I think Ellie would just be sweet. And I think Benny would be a wild card. But I mean, we've talked about it on here. Benny has told me I have tall boobs. Right, was it Benny? I don't even know which one. At this point, all their insults really just they melt together. If they had to describe Jason, oh, I know what Benny would do. Benny would tell you that he's handsome. She might tell you he has a beard, but she would definitely tell you he's handsome. Because every time she sees him recently, she goes, I love you, dad, you're so handsome. I don't know what she's working towards, but I'm going to figure it out. And the number of times she said it at this point, it's got to be big. Maybe it's expensive. I don't know. She's working on something. You so handsome, dad, I love you. I agree with the whole statement, but also what? I'm hoping she would balance that with your beautiful mom, but I just can't be certain at any given time. And last up, the flyers are in the playoffs, but the real MVP, at least on social media, has been our mascot, Gritty. He's on a generational TikTok run right now. Queen Emma, let's see it, please. My audio listeners, Gritty is beating the absolute crap out of the Pittsburgh Penguin. Yeah, he is beating him. Oh, and now he's lifted over his head. And he's nodding like a WWE wrestler and then he launches him over the edge. I believe we have another clip. Helping random penguins fans get home safe, part two. The first part of the clip are penguins.
His fans running and the second part of the clip is Gritty's Googley eyes going whack a doodle while he chases him down the hallway. Gritty is great because Gritty is Gritty. Gritty is Philadelphia. Gritty doesn't hold back. He's very straightforward. He's very straight to the point and I love it. I love it so much. He looks like a hot mess express. If you haven't, Google it. Look it up. Look up his belly button. I know that sounds crazy, but it's kind of ridiculous. People online are starting to wonder if there really is even a person inside the Gritty costume. I could go either way on this. I mean, what was he born out of like a sewer in Philadelphia? Is he born out of a manhole cover in Philly? According to his official biographer Gritty emerged after construction at the Expinity Mobile Arena, the flyer's home arena, disturbed his secret hideout. It was probably a sewer. It was probably the sewer underneath of Expiny Live Arena. He is a great compliment to the family-friendly, fun-loving Philly fanatic. I wouldn't quite say Gritty is family-friendly. He's Philly family-friendly. He is not what the rest of the country would agree is family-friendly, I think. And I mean that wholeheartedly as a compliment. And that does it for Doom Scroll the Week brought to you by Lulu Lemon. Coming up, I'm about to be joined by Brenda Song right after these messages from me. With four little girls, I know sometimes we can all be a little extra. Like when you have to cook two different shapes of pasta, yeah. Or you must wear a princess dress to go to the grocery store. That's exactly how I know what does and doesn't need to be so extra. How many dish-shops are loaded with dyes and artificial fragrances that do more to put on a show than actually clean? That's the wrong kind of extra. And that's where seventh generation comes in. Seven generations, bio-based power, cuts through grease so I can clean my dishes and then get back to literally anything else. That's seventh generation. All the cleaning power, none of the extras. Plus, the dish liquid is EPA safer choice certified, meaning they're designed to be safer for you, your family, and the environment. It's just a powerful clean that gets the job done and leaves nothing behind, meaning you don't need to rewash dishes while also holding a toddler with your other arm. Make the switch today to seventh generation, a powerful clean without anything extra. Visit www.seventhgeneration.com/extra to learn more. The real ones know that I've been wearing my favorite Lulu Lemon shorts and leggings since I was 19. The best part is, Lulu Lemon looks great and lasts. You feel that the first time you put it on and you feel it six months later. Plus, their new spring styles take that even further. I'm loving the new Rulu Drape Yoga Jogger. That's these, okay? You want to know why I love them? Because it's comfortable. I love this fabric. The Rulu fabric is so soft. It feels buttery and nice. Lulu Lemon fabric is great because the fact that it keeps it shape, wear after wear, I have tested that through four pregnancies. And I still have leggings that I will wear and they absolutely come right back to where they originally were. So not only do they fit a belly, but now they fit my postpartum body. Here's the thing you need to know. Lulu Lemon does limited color runs. So when those new styles drop every Tuesday, they go fast. I just picked this up off of the new Lulu Lemon golf drop, which this color is beautiful and it's so freaking comfy. But you guys know I'm a golfer now, so you don't want to wait. If it's not for you, Lulu Lemon offers free returns. No risk. That's LuluLemon.com. New Drops every Tuesday. Go now. She's the ridiculously funny and talented actress you know from Sweet Life of Zack and Cody. Doll Face, New Girl, and of course, running point season two is officially out now on Netflix. She's also a fellow mom and one of the most intense sports fans I've ever seen. And that's a lot coming from me. And now she's officially not gonna lie. Brenda Song, welcome to the show. Thank you so much for having me. I'm so excited. I'm such a big fan of the show. This has been months in the making. We have been talking about trying to get you on here for a while. I think there was brief talks about that this would have been a beautiful meet up in Disney World. You have no idea. I was devastated when that didn't work out. Here's to do. There's always later. Please. I'm a check. Please, I'm a Disney adult, so please, that's my dream. Perfect. Because I refused to go there unless I have a Disney adult at my back and call because I am not a Disney adult and I like to lean on professionals. I could right now, if you were to tell me like, how should I go through Disney Land with my kids? I would write you down how you should hit the parks where you should go. How old are your kids? What ride they should hit? Not only grew up Disney Land, but like as an adult, I feel like me and Mack love Disney Land more than our children do. I do think that that, so we are because we're East Coast, we're worlds, we're Disney world people. Oh, yeah. I will tell you, I have realized that it is not for the kids. It's not, it's for us. And as adults, we can appreciate the magic and also the food and beverage and also our legs can do it. You know, it's a lot. We took our kids way too early like they don't know. Poor Mack is like strolling them in the huge double strollers and like by one PM, they're tired. I'm like, we have eight hours to go. Yep. This is a marathon, not a sprint people. We figured out that if you get, because we have four, because we're crazy. Oh, sorry. You okay? No, thank you for asking. We figured out that there are actually strollers that you can fold up and put underneath the big stroller. So we have two compact strollers underneath a double stroller, because you can't take a wagon. That's a thing. So yeah, I, I wholeheartedly agree with it's just, it's a marathon, not a sprint. And we have regularly hit that like one, maybe somewhere between one and two o'clock. And I'm like, are we going to make it? Are we going to, are we going to make fireworks? No, we're going to find out together. That's exactly for us. That's, that's, that's the benchmark is, are we going to make the light show and or the fireworks? Yes. Mm hmm. We'll get back to, to parenthood a little bit later, but I really want to talk to you about running point. First of all, congrats on season two. Thank you so much. I actually got to talk to Kate Hudson last year when the first season came out. Yes. And it's been so fun to see your friendship on screen. How has that been for you guys? Well, firstly, I told her all about your podcast because I love it. And I, that's the thing about Kate is, she is one of my really good friends. She's like a big sister to me. I sometimes look over and I still can't believe that I'm standing next to Kate Hudson. Like it feels insane because she's such an icon. I love her so much. So many of her performances live right free in my head. And I remember meeting her for the first time at our first table rate and I was so, so, so nervous. And she was like the coolest, most like open, chill, kind, generous person. And I'm so grateful to have her in my life because now that we've known each other for gosh, like over two years, she's just been the advice that she's given me, like personally, professionally interior design advice, everything. I mean, this woman knows everything. I'm so grateful because she is the best scene partner, but also at the same time. I think we're chatting more about everything else. Like we kind of shoot a show while we're just hanging out. That's what it feels like this show is like we're just a bunch of friends hanging out. And I guess we kind of make a show in our downtime. It's honestly, I feel like that comes through the screen. The level of comfort and the friendship you guys have comes through the screen because it's first of all, I said this to Kate. I watched the entire first season while walking on the treadmill because I was like, if you guys are going to be boss ass women, I'm going to be a boss ass woman and keep my body moving while I watch the show. But I love that it really is like two friends just being badass is in the sports world. It feels so good and you can feel it right through the screen. Oh, thank you. It's, you know, I always say it starts on the top and like Mindy Kaling is like the big, like the most badass boss woman you'll ever meet. Like, you know, she like for our first table reach, it sent me an email being like, oh, I'm not going to make it because I'm about to give birth. And I was like, I didn't even know your pregnant. Two weeks into filming, like two weeks later, we were filming our first episode. And we finished a take and then I hear, wait, wait, I have a quick note. And it's freaking Mindy. I don't like Mindy. You just had a baby. It's like insane, like being around her and Kate, I've just inspired me so much. Because when I was about to start this show, I was, this was my first, like, my big undertaking after having two kids. I felt really lost and confused about, you know, where I was in life. How do I navigate this new me? Because I just felt so different after having my kids. And you know how, you know, like, I feel like society tells like all like working moms, [BLANK_AUDIO]
No, girl, you got to go out there and keep working. Live your best life, be a boss bitch. But also be a full-time mom. You can't miss a single soccer practice. Make sure you, every bedtime. And I was like, what am I, I didn't know. I was so nervous. And then I met these two incredible women who both have three kids, who both run empires, who are both so kind and generous and so talented and good people. And it inspires me so much to just keep going and that it's just about prioritizing your, like what's important to you, and that moms are incredible. You just make it work. Like you just, I don't know how, but you just do. That's the female way. We'll make it, we'll figure it out and we'll do it. I am going to hit the spoiler alert because your partner once again makes a cameo this season as someone who also has a husband constantly pitching crazy ideas to her to get involved in. I love this for you guys. What's your strategy when he does this? I'm just, I'm like, can I just have one thing? I'm kidding, it's, you know what it is? It's because we genuinely are all friends. Like Dave Stassen, like Baron Holtz and Mindy, like our, like Mac is friends with them. And so it's sort of as like kind of a joke because we shoot all of the basketball, all the games, stuff at the very end. We shoot at the last couple of weeks. And Mac just like stopped by set and he was like, oh, what if you just like throw me in the stands? Like, can I just like be a fan? No one says anything and he's like, but you know, we can like maybe I do a fan bit. And they're like, actually, we do have like a little fan bit that is coming up in a couple of days. If you want to do that and he's like, oh my God, yes. And then I was like, oh, that's cute. And then we got picked up for a second season. And we were actually at the opening Rams game. And I had Dave Stassen, our showrunner and Scott McArthur replace Nath. I had them come with us. And he spent the first half hour like pitching this like story arc for this fan and how he's going to come back. Yes. And let me tell you, he already has a pitch for this non-existence season three. And he was so mad because he technically has two cameos this season because we use a clip for my girl, spoiler. And he was so mad. He's like, I have two cameos and I didn't even get an invite to the premiere. He was like, I'm your plus one. And I was like, wow, honey. I was like, it's the pet you were there either way. (laughing) That was there either way. That's a great point though. So season three, I'll do what I love to do. This is my wooden spoon I knock on first for good luck. Just so we don't jinx anything, but I'm on board. I'm going to cross fingers and toes for a season three. And hope that maybe there's three cameos next season because if it was, if we're building, let's build, you know? Oh, that's a great pitch. Oh, I can't even, I can't even give that suggestion. And if I tell him to do three cameos on the show. I just think this fan might have a deeply rooted backstory and why they're a fan, you know? I don't know, I don't write shows. There's a reason for it. I have no business in there, but just take it. Just take it, keep that one for you. If we use the idea, we'll credit you Kylie. We promise. - Thank you so much. Maybe I could come to the premiere. - Please come. - Thank you so much. - Please. No, that would be so much fun. I always say like, we need more women and women in sports on this show. I'm here for it. - Oh, I don't want to be in it. I just want to come. - No. - I mean, you can come visit, but also be in it. - No, thank you. I am good. Have you ever seen the Homer Simpson when he melts into the hedge? - Yes. - That's me. That is me. Find a hedge. I'll be in it. I am good. If you have a hedge, yeah, if you have a hedge on the, you just paint me green, put me in there. That's, that'll be my role. - Well, regardless, you should come visit. If there's a third season, come, come, come, please. I'm manifesting a third season for many reasons. Many, many reasons, 'cause I love this show. - Thank you. - Now, you, of course, play the chief of staff for an LA basketball team in the show, but in real life, you are one of the biggest Laker fans around. - Yes. - It is, it's so impressive. - How superstitious are you? Because I'm asking, this is a safe space for superstition, because, I mean, you saw my wooden spoon. I like to keep something handy, just in case, we'll scale it. I need to know how superstitious you are on a scale of one to turning around in your seat at the stadium if shit isn't going your way. - It is, so. I've been better now because I literally went to the hospital watching a Laker game at home. I hyperventilated because I was watching a game and it was the game, it was the Game 7 Western Commerce Finals Laker's Sacramento. I talk about this all the time because it was so anxiety-written. I, it was, the game was really close and I had taken a little sip of water. And I'm a person that, well, I had this like Laker's like pajama set that I wore and we went on a run and I was like, and I wore that and I won't wash it. If I, I don't have anything to start with, if we have a great game, I'll just like casually repeat something and then it becomes my superstition of the season. - I endorse this whole whole thing. - But that game, I took a sip of water and they scored. And then I'll say, oh, that's so crazy and I took another sip of water and they scored again. So I just kept taking sips of water and I, and this was like the start of the second half. And by the end of it, I was, I literally threw up, I was freaking out 'cause we won the game. And I like literally hyperventilated and I'd be taken to the hospital and at the hospitals and they're waiting and I wanted to watch the post game and I was trying to make myself throw up 'cause I was like, if I just throw up, I can go home and they had to turn off all the TVs because I was trying to make myself throw up so I could watch the post, like the post game. So that is the level of like superstition. I was at, I'm better now, like I'm better now. Like for instance, I do have like a lucky Rams jersey. I'm much more superstitious with the Rams right now because it's also a much shorter season 'cause I used to be in 82 games a year, whether I was listening to it on the radio with Stu and Chick. The, yeah, I was, I would listen to it on the radio 'cause that's how old I am and that's how long I've been watching the Lakers. And when I was shooting this sweet life, they had to put a monitor under, 'cause we shot in front of a live audience so they had like bleachers. They'd have to put a monitor underneath the bleachers if there was a game on so I could watch. Because otherwise I'd be so distracted 'cause I'd need to know what the score was. - Yes, absolutely, yeah. So that is the level of superstition I have now. Like I was so nervous and I still think this is why, the last game we went to was the OKC game. And mind you, Laurent wasn't playing, AR wasn't playing, Luca wasn't playing. But it is the first time, 'cause I am a, when I go to a sports game, I am in head to toe in my team's gear. I do not like to, like, and I went and we had just come from a long day of press and I wasn't wearing any Lakers gear. And I, I know why we lost that game is because I was not wearing a Lakers gear 'cause I never go to a sports game without winning. So I'm like, that's what it was. It's because I wasn't wearing my Lakers gear. - I can't disagree with you. I'm sorry to put that pressure on you, but I can't disagree with you. - Yeah. - OK, well, you're never gonna make that mistake again. - Never. I kept thinking about it 'cause we went straight from our press and I was like, I don't have any Lakers gear. I'm gonna stop with that Lakers shop. - Okay. - Next time we stop at the pro shop. - We have to, we have to. - You have no other choice. This, this feels really good to me. This, I'm sorry that it feels so bad for you, but it feels great to me. Now, the one other thing I will bring up about the Lakers is that I saw somewhere that on the sweet life set that you had a cut out of Kobe. Is that correct? - My whole, my dressing room for the entirety was all Lakers out. Like I have a, like, like you walk in, you, Kobe, you met a life size Kobe Ryan, and met you at the door. But I had Lakers theme blankets, pillows, mirrors. It was all Laker theme. The entirety of my, I was always Lakered out. I mean, I had sneakers that had, I had custom in. They were like old school dunks that were purple and gold and they say Ms. Brenda Bryant on the side. 'Cause that's how psychotic I was. Delusional, absolutely delusional. - Now, I would like to say the, the clip of you, Mike Duff. - I'm Mike Duff, go. - Brenda's busy. - Come on, you got a double team, a double team. - Yes, get it, get it, Clever, let's go. - I love you so much. - What do you think I switched with the gate? - Outstanding. - I was actually very calm. - So that's, so that's, that was one of my, thank you so much for bringing that up. Were you on your best behavior? - I was so calm. - I like, I was actually when I watched, when they sent it to me, I was like, oh, I was like, but I was much more calm than I normally. And like, when you sit courtside at the Lakers, they give you like this little note that is like the way that you need to conduct yourself. - Sure. - And I feel personally, like I feel like they wrote it for me. I feel like there's a damn Brenda. Chill out, I really feel like I took it really personally and I was like, okay, I'm gonna be on my best behavior. And so I just want everyone to know that I was on my best behavior. I was so, that was a really hard game. - Yes. - It was a rough game for us. And I feel like. - 'Cause you didn't have your Lakers girl. - Exactly. But I feel like I was really calm. And I feel like we had a great time. I taught Kate a lot. She like makes me laugh because she is so funny because she is the exact opposite of me at a game. She's so calm, she's so chill. And those words don't, I don't know what those words mean, especially at a sporting event. - I have no time. - Skin time. - Oh yeah.
Mac is always worried that I'm going to get into a fight at a game because I have to feel in trouble. I know. I was like, especially if you're coming to our house, get out of here. Get out of here. Now I will say in terms of Kate's reaction to you, the one part of the clip where she turns and goes, Brenda's busy. I'm like, that's the perfect. I'm just, I'm here for a good time. She's busy. So we can interrupt her. Now, I do want to bring up, you're saying you're very calm in that clip. How about when you were with McCauley last year? Would you say that was your best behavior? I push off. I push off. What? Yeah, no, no, that was actually still pretty tame. Like, that was like, you don't want to see me. I feel like with basketball right now, because I, my fandom is different when Kobe was playing. Oh, no, you could have never Mike to me up because I would, I would go after players, families and children. Like, I was that, that level of like crazy. I really feel like I am so much more calm than I would be at a Rams game. I always say like, I was like, you can't make me a better Rams game. I would, I would be canceled immediately because I am just, I, I'd just be yelling also. I would just be yelling the entire time because I really do, I would like, my goals is to be like, you know, like an assistant defensive coordinator. Like, that is my like dream goal. Like, that's what I want to do in life. Yes. And I feel like I, and especially now, I feel like I've gotten a lot more calm. I mean, you might have to ask Mack, he'll probably say something different, but I do feel like I'm, I'm more chill than I used to be. I have got, I've gone on record. People will ask me all the time about how it's been, do you still go to games all the time? Because I used to go to every home game. Yeah. And I say, no, I watch from the comfort of my own living room. Like, you, you like that in my head. I'm like, yeah, I do because I can say all the curse words I want in my living room. And no one's going to be like, wow, Kylie, why are you talking about that player like that? And I'm like, well, because he's got bricks for hands. Okay. Yes. Who am I to, you know, or like every time there's like a defensive secondary and it goes right through their hands. And I mean, they get fingers on it. And I'm like, that's why they're defense, Kylie, that's why they're defense, Kylie, that's why they're defense, Kylie, if they had hands, they'd play offense. And I'm talking to myself. And I'm like, you know what? This living room. This is a good place to do that. It's the same place. Eyes on me, you know. I will go to you. I'm good. It's so funny because I always say this. I'm like, I always preface it that when I'm watching a game, there is no player in person. This is just players. We are talking strictly sports here. And so when I am like, I love, like, I love my Ramley. I love my Rams players. But yeah, don't get it twisted when someone drops a pass. When there is, when there's a missed opportunity, when someone is just not, because so many things have to go right for, you know, like, that's the thing about football. It like truly one person's missing someone. You miss a block. It is done for the place. And I can't let it go. I hold on to grudges for a very long time. Like I could tell you now, like, how many, how many players that I look at? And I was like, Oh, I'll never forget that past you drop. I'll never forget it. Now, I used to give, I used to give myself grace by reminding myself that no one was excluded from the opportunity of me ripping them to shreds. And by that, I mean, I used to get my husband too. Like, there were times where he would, he would have a hold. And I'd be like, you thought you were going to get away with that. You thought you were going to get, you thought you were going to, you were so far outside of your framework, I'm done. Like, I would be, I would be like no one was safe, no one. So I feel like that makes it fair. Checking all state first could save you hundreds on car insurance. That's smart. Not checking the kids' pockets before starting the laundry. Now there's random rocks clanking around in the dryer and what I can only guess is chewed gum all over the place. Yeah, checking first is smart. So check all state first for a quote that could save you hundreds. You're in good hands with all state. Potential savings vary subject to terms, conditions and availability, all state North American insurance company, and affiliates Northbrook Illinois. What I will say is that I am not sorry about the last couple of times that the Eagles and the Rams met up. Oh my God, please don't even get me started that blocked, that blocked. Jordan David. I'm still mad at Jalen. I'm still mad at that Jalen Carter sack. Like two playoffs ago. And like, I'm still mad about it when we, I was like in my mind, I was like, we're driving down. We have the ball. We're down. I see. We're going to win by one. I see this. Yeah. And Jalen Carter. I, he's incredible. Let me tell you about that Jordan Davis block. From our side of things. Remember when we were talking about superstition? I turned my ass around and my seat. And then you guys didn't win. No, we did not success. So many of our losses this past season came down to either, I mean, it came down to special teams, but it came, I mean, we had two blocked fuel goals. The past season to lose a game. I mean, not only plays into the win now because you have, you guys have it. You're, I mean, when you're losing by that small of a margin, it says you're right there. Yeah. And then so that's why we took Tyson Simpson and that's why we took a quarterback. And for our, our first pick in this draft, I love that. That close. I think everyone loved that. Yes. We're into it. For I, I was, I was, we're here in New York doing press. And I've been, I've been waiting for the draft because off season, when you, when you didn't win, like I always say, like the fastest off season was when the Rams won because I'm like, I'm living it up. Yes. You know, in the off season, but when you don't win or when your team was really close and they don't win, this is like the hardest time. You're like, how are you going to fix it? Exactly. So all I'm thinking about is, you know, okay, what trades? What do we get a free agency? And then the draft, you get so excited about the draft because you're like, all right, here's where we configure it. And especially I think specifically in the NFL and in football, a player can make an impact immediately. It's truly a young man's game. Like you come in right out the gate. You can make a difference. I mean, like, you know what I mean, right away. And so that's what's hard for me is like, we're not a, we can't wait three years. That's staff for at at least 742. Like, you know what I mean? I'm like, we are. We are a win now team. And so I'm, I'm really frustrated because all the other picks that we took, we took a tight end, like an online defensive line, a wide receiver. I'm like, yeah, that's what I thought we were going to take. And I thought we were just going to take a star player. Someone like Emma Kileman, a Caleb Downs, a Rubin Bane. Someone that's going to make an impact right away. You know, you know, and I'm, I hope I, like, Kylie, I hope in a couple of years that I'm eating my words. Like, I hope I'm going, Brenda, past Brenda was wrong. I hope I'm wrong. I hope I'm wrong. I, I mean, as long as it is not against the Eagles, I hope you're wrong too, just because I love your passion. We actually did a funny thing on our, we were all together with our cast and everyone like Justin was like, you know what we should do? Show each other's for you page, like, or explore page on Instagram. And I was like, what is mine? Because I'm not really on social. And like mine, like, I mean, let's see, it is, I'm like, such a, I'm like, such a, like, oh, like, oh, I don't know how to get to your number. I don't know how to get to free page. But we went on mine and they were like, mine looked like a 12 year old boy. It was just sports. I was like, is this really who I am? Like, I'm getting targeted at first for, like, fat heads for free. Yeah. Oh, I mean, yeah, I mean, even now, like I, right now, it's, it's just the ramps. Yes. It's just the ramps. It's the season. It's just the ramps all the time. It's no joke. I love that so much. I know. This is my life, Kylie. I, it's like, my, my kids, like, so, um, this past, August, like, Mac, like, kind of reproposed to me. And it was really sweet. I was coming home from running point and my mom texted me, she's like, are you wearing makeup? And I was like, what? And they had flowers, like, all by the front door at my two boys. And he, like, I like, walk up. And I was like, oh, my God. And he looked at my voice. He goes, okay, what do you say to mama? And my youngest went, Rams house, because he's so used to me doing callback. I'll go, who's house? It'll go, Rams house. I trained my kids well. So beautiful. Yeah. Oh, we rehearsed and we were rehearsed like, well, you marry us. But no, my sentence distinctively new house, that's outstanding. Raising them right, you know, raising them right. You got it. You got to get it in their wall. They're you really have to like instill it when they're young. Yeah. So that they know. If you ask your kids, go, they'll say go birds. Yes. I love that. We got it. As they should. They should. That's a well-informed child. And I like it. Now, before we move off of sports completely, I heard you say one of your dreams would be to be chief of staff for a team. But you actually did get kind of close when you were a captain for the Disney Channel games. Yes, ma'am. Now, I apologize for this next sentence. No, please. But can you believe that was 20 years ago? That is, I mean, you feel free to say no, it wasn't because I say all the time. I'm 24 years old. I'm 24. I'm 34 years. What can I tell you? I didn't really feel my age until I had children. Like, I feel like I've aged 10 years and the last five. See, I still
I don't think I'm a teen mom. I have a six, my oldest is six. I'm like, I was a teen mom. 24 years old, I was math, I was a teen mom. - My favorite is what I was like, yeah, I have two kids, three and five. I'm like, oh yeah. And I was like, you don't want to tell me that that's shocking. I look like I should have said something else. - Yeah, that you should have been like, oh my goodness, you don't look like you should have two kids. Because in my mind, I'm like, I'm still a child. I can't believe someone allowed me to have two children. - Thank you for saying that. - Right? - I've like, I don't realize when I had kids, I'm like, no one knows what they're doing. My parents definitely had no idea what they're doing. - Absolutely. - We're all faking it till we make it. - A thousand percent. - But back to the Disney Channel Games. - Yes. - That was the best. Like, we were so competitive. 'Cause we did it Disney World, the second of 30 years, we did it Disney World. And it truly was like summer camp on steroids. Because we all knew each other. We all shot on the same lot. We've all known each other for so long. But they literally put us in our own little tents. And my team in particular, that first year we were out there when I was a captain of the Red Team, the Inferno, we were so competitive. Like, and so many of us were far too old like to be this competitive. Because some of the kids were really young. We're like, we don't care. We're gonna win. They had to tell us so many times to stop swearing because we were so in it. Like, we were like in hamster balls. Like, we were doing the most childish games, but taking it so serious. Like, we literally game plan. We were like, okay. So for this mini game where we have to keep the ball up in here, this is what we're gonna do with we. We're so serious. And I mean, that's how I approach sports. Like, I'm terrified for my kids are playing actual sports with games. Mac is like, I'm not allowed to go. Like, I'm not allowed to go to games. - That's fair. You know, sometimes you gotta recognize and you gotta be self-aware and you gotta be like, you know what, I'm either going with tape over my mouth or I'm not going at all. - Exactly. - Now everybody's talking about their Disney Channel Mount Rushmore, which I saw you did, you shared yours. I just recently shared mine. I had Miley, Hillary, you and Selena. Who would be your Disney Channel starting five? - Oh, like, if I had to-- - That's good. - If you were putting five people on a court. Who are you putting out there? - Let me see. I have to really think about this, because reactors mind you, reactors. So, I have to think hard about this, because, I mean, that'd be really hard, 'cause I love everyone. But like, I think if sports is not about loving them. - I know. And I'm telling you right now, I'm literally blinking, 'cause I'm like, I, we're not a very athletic bunch. - You're like, none of your worth draft. - Kind of. - It's okay, I'm about to answer. - I know what they have myself. - I think I dropped myself. - I think we could have you as the head coach. - See, I would do that, but I don't think I can actually play. You know what my mind went straight to? Let's get you ahead in the game. And I was like, wait, maybe Zack or Corbin or Luke. - Like, they're dancing. They're dancing. - They are dancing. They are dancing. - But there is a finesse to dancing that could make you a little fluid on the court. - True. - Could have you break into ankles? - Like, probably that, or I'm thinking of like, do you remember, like, the Disney Channel movie? Like, it's like, I forgot it was like double, double, double teamed or something. - Uh. - The two twins. - Yes, yes. - I was like, I'm literally going back and going. - Yes. - They actually play-- - Oh, you know what, John Sally, former Laker, former wonderful Laker, we, she was actually in a Disney Channel original movie that I was in. So I dropped to him. I dropped John Sally. (laughs) - That is the most-- - The tweet does account, you know what? Dwight Howard was also a guest on our show. - Look it, like it. - Jesus. - I love that you're like, how can I make my way around this and make a lot of, like, real good starting five? So I'm gonna find the people who had cameos and then I will put literally outstanding. I love that tactic. - I like to win, Kylie. I like to win. - I love it so much. - In any way, thought that was outstanding. That was well done. Way to take that and just absolutely smash it. - Gosh. - Now since we're talking Disney Channel, I have to ask you about London Tempton and the sweet life of Zach and Cody. Would you ever be down for a sweet life reunion? - Oh, of course. I mean, I see, I just saw Phil Lewis recently. Dylan and I were just texting. And I saw, like, I saw Ashley about a year ago. We still all see each other, but we haven't all been in the same room in such a long time. And I think that'd be so much fun. 'Cause people always talk about reboots and I think we all feel the same way where we kind of feel like we don't want to touch something that we feel like we couldn't do justice to. And because at that time, we just had the best time on that show. They really are like family, but 1,000%. I would love to get everyone together in a room together 'cause it's been so long and I've sort of seen everyone individually, but we haven't all been in the same room in a really long time. We're married, we're kids. All of us are like, it's insane. - Real insane. - I would love it. I feel like the nostalgia would just hit so hard. And I do think that it, like you're saying, a reunion would be, it would be so refreshing. And I don't even, I mean, I wouldn't say no to a reunion. But if it's not you guys, like the nostalgia of it is you guys. - Oh, it feels so good. - So it feels so good. - Maybe we need a Disney Channel games reunion. Like that would be fun. All of us so old now with our like child, like our broken bodies from having children all together and we'll just like play like Ma Zhong or like Jin Rumi. - A seated games, please. A seated games for the, the geriatric Disney former Disney Channel stars. - No, I didn't see that your partner has said your kids don't know that London Tipton is literally you. Is that still the case? - They don't understand like Mac has behind my back shown them things that I've been like, our oldest is really into like superheroes and like Ninja Turtles. And we showed them like the Ninja Turtles from the 90s and like three ninjas. Do you remember those movies? And so they were very into it and Mac showed them Wendy Woo. And my son, because they're so used to watching videos of themselves and like digital age, they don't, they're so confused. Because they're like, why is Mama flying across a warehouse? All doing kicks. Why is Mama doing back flips? And they're like, can you do that? Mama, can you do that right now? And I was like, how do I explain this to the kids? And I looked at Mac and I was like, how dare you do this to me? Because now and so now level of expectation. Because otherwise Mama will be doing flying side kicks from across the room. - Yes. - They don't understand. It's really weird for them. Because I think they just think this was like us when we were younger, the way that they look at pictures of them when they were younger. For me, it's a little bit different. Because like I feel like I still look the same. Like same ish. I just look younger. For Mac, they don't understand that he is Kevin. They love home alone. They watch it for the first time this past year. They love it. They don't understand that that's their papa. Like if you asked my kids what, like their parents did for a living, like they asked my son at school, like, oh, what does your mama do for work? Cause I was away for work. And the teacher told me, he goes, oh, my mama talks. She talks for like, he's not wrong. But that's what he thinks. - A few other details were missed, but it's fine. - Yeah, it's really hard. Cause it's hard, like it's not a tangible thing for like kids at this age to understand that their parents pretend to be other people on TV, you know? So yeah, we're, I was like, we'll cross that bridge when we need to, we'll get there eventually. I hope so, baby. Now, since we're already talking motherhood, you guys have two boys. - Yes. - I have four girls. - Wow. - Yeah. When you talk with friends that have girls, what stands out as the biggest difference? My favorite thing is when my girlfriends are like, oh, I'm sitting here and we're doing our nails. Or where she's doing, you're doing my makeup. We're gonna go have a nail day. Or my girlfriend like brought her daughter like for lunch and she was sitting there and just like chatting about nails. And I literally had to bring like a bag full of toys and I'm running around catching like heads. And like, there were my friends, that same friend sent me a video of like our situation where it's like a mom and her daughter, like they're playing with dolls and they're sitting there chatting and the house looks all aesthetic and then her friend with the boy, mom friend comes in and she's like in sweats, carrying like 14 bags, running around, that is me. And that's I think the biggest difference is boys at this age just don't stop moving. Everything is tag, Mac taught them freeze tags. So I can at least have a break. Freeze tag, my kids loving municipal worker. So it's like, please man, take it a jail. My fireman who needs to be saved. It is constant. We're like, now they're into like play fighting and I'm trying to teach them how to do it safely without like hurting, but also I don't want to like stunt their like, you know, their curiosity and their creativity. And like, don't we want to color? Like, I've like taught, no. I know my oldest finally is like getting into card games. He loves like Uno and like board games. So I'm very happy about that. But most of the time it's like, let's play tag. Let's let's, can I chase you, mama? And they'll like literally chase me and they're like run around car. It is, I never stop. It's, work is actually a place where I take a break. I was like full-time moms. That is the hardest job in the world. Stay at home moms are like the heroes that I will never have more than enough respect for because I say, you know, finding work balanced with a working mom, like it's a different struggle. The mom guilt, all that kind of stuff. But I remember two weeks after having my first son,
I, my mom, who's, like, we don't have a traditional nanny. I have my mom 'cause Asian mom looked at us and was like, if you get a nanny, I'll be insulted. And it's like the biggest blessing in our lives. I remember looking at her after like two weeks postpartum and be like, I am so sorry for anything I've ever done to upset you, to hurt you, to ever like cause you stress because being a mom is so hard and she did it with three kids and like, it's being at home and like, rut, like, I don't know how she did it. Like, she truly, like, I don't know how you do it. Like, I am, it is so hard, it is so hard. Like, right now being here has been so hard being here for the kids, but it's, it's like this balance of like figuring out, you know, the mom guilt and understanding that I truly have to be the, for me to be the best mom, I have to be the best me and a huge part of that is work. Like, that really makes me feel strong and confident and like me cause I love my work so much and trying to do that while also being with my kids as much as I can be and also trying to teach them that you have to work. - It is crazy to think that you are molding their upbringing. So like, you know what your childhood did for you. And obviously you wanna try and replicate certain things and not replicate other things, but at the end of the day you are making what we now look back on as our childhood and what made us who we are. - So it's crazy, that's a crazy responsibility to have. - The pressure is insane, someone once told me, just remember when you speak to your children that is gonna be their inner voice as adults. - Yes. - I went, thank you for reminding me, their pressure is not enough already to raise good children, smart children, curious children. I always say like right now, like my son is, we have one that's three and a half, one that just turned five and it's such a tricky time because they're both so curious and they wanted that why, they wanna know about everything, questions about everything, but also they're testing their boundaries and limits. And like my son the other day said to me goes, "Flum, you're always so mean to me, you're always telling me what to do." And I like got so emotional, I just like walk away because I went, that is not what I wanna do, but at the same time it's like how do you find the balance of teaching your kids what's right and wrong and what's smart because you know, we like to not say good or bad, it's with smart and not smart decisions. It's like everything has to be so intentional or should, like we try to be intentional about everything that we're doing, but also allowing them to still be kids and allow them to just like make mistakes so they can learn on their own, to have fun, to not stump that like growth and curiosity. - It's so hard. - My oldest hit me with your so mean. She doesn't, on a semi-regular basis should, like if I ask her not to do something or I'll say, like that doesn't feel like a good choice. She will say, "You're so mean." And I'm like, "Am I mean or am I?" And she'll go trying to keep me safe. And I'm like, "Thank you so much for understanding the difference." So all the, like on a regular basis, we have conversations about like the reason mom says no, oftentimes is to keep you or your sister safe.
