your body like everybody's different so the baby had broccoli allergy and you had and she was very happy about that mom i can't eat that that's why i cook so much now because i have to find different ingredients and different ways to cook things so you really be cooking yeah i got a whole man and kids i gotta make sure everybody's staying alive this is nice you came in the house teach me how to be yeah yeah i'm gonna talk to the teacher what kind of parent are you at the school i'm like i am a very good parent you got pta meetings yeah well i sign up for everything so i'm a part of like all the different things if i show up that's the question also i know my kids i also know that people are crazy just because they teachers don't mean they not crazy not crazy so i just like to have again how old is the youngest baby 12 every day before school i'm like how much time we got how far is the school we late i emailed it look we had a mental health morning and we not finna rush up to that school have my baby stressed out she had things she wanted to get off her chest and so we did it is are her grades okay okay so i want to hear about it thank you thank you so imagine looking 16 and walking up with kids that are my height and then as soon as i start talking they realize like oh that's the mama that's hilarious and then even being around my daughter and like friends that she had and we were like sitting on the like the the lawn for something they were doing like an after-school thing and the kids was cussing so i'm looking because they don't see me and my daughter go hey hey my mama right there speaking of kids cussing there's a video i think it's on instagram i saw it and it's like a mother talking to her little little bitty baby and she's like what you be saying when when you mad at me and i don't be hearing you like what you be saying she'll be like you're gonna whoop me and she was like no just tell me what you're gonna what you're saying she'd be like i'd be like this motherfucking bitch keep asking me but some people get so offended when they see kids cussing they'd be like oh my gosh you're laughing at your children cussing like no they posted their kid that was saying something that they say and so with my kids i was like as soon as they hit like 10 something like that i'm like look i know you finna be cussing and i'm not tripping but i bet not Audiobooks, I've really been trying to get into them, but I only really like. doing it when I'm reading someone's memoir. Like, I am listening to Viola Davis' book. I had to stop listening to it, because I was crying on the way to work every day. But I also know, like, when I'm reading the memoirs, I'm reading it in their voices. So, I might as well just listen. Listen to it. So, those are the only books that I like to, like, listen to. All them other books where it's, like, somebody going, hi, so long time. I'm like, who did this? I was just watching Dr. Doolittle. I know you're going to think I'm crazy. I was literally just watching. The original? Yes. Like, the first one y'all were in is still hilarious today. It's Eddie Murphy, though. Right? Do you look back on those projects with, like, does it feel so far removed from you, or does it feel like, you know what I mean? Like, I did do that. To me, doing something like Dr. Doolittle was like, oh, this is something I get to do outside of school. Like, this is fun. When you were still in school? Yeah, and the first Dr. Doolittle, I was nine? I think? So, like, fourth grade? I think fifth grade. Right. I think one of my teachers, we had drama with them, and they were like, oh, you can't walk the stage, like, graduating because I missed so many days. And I was like, but I'm asking you for work. It was a lot. It was a lot dealing with being a child actress and still being like, in public school. In Los Angeles? Yes. That's crazy. Yes. I was excited because my family has always been a fan of Eddie Murphy. I mean. Of course. But being nine, I think that's the year that Vampire in Brooklyn came out. And my mom was the mom where we were watching stuff we shouldn't have been watching. Same. Of course she gonna fast forward through something or cover your eyes and be like, don't look at that. Right. But we were watching things that. I was Vampire in Brooklyn for Halloween. No, you were not. Yes. There's a new Vampire in Brooklyn. Oh, goodness. Not the voiceover. And with the laugh. Working with him, I feel like that was my first example of seeing someone who was fun when we weren't filming. And then when we were filming, it was like, oh, serious. Really? And he didn't say it, but you can see it. Like, he went from being cool, funny, funny, funny, then it was time to shoot. I was like, oh, he's serious. To work. Right. So it kind of made me like, oh, I can have fun at this time, but when it's time to work, it's time to work. It's time to work. And the last time I saw him was at one of his daughter's art exhibits that she had. Okay. Yep. And he walked up to me and he was like, oh, all my daughters are here tonight. And I was just like, oh, come on. I haven't been your daughter officially since, like, that you were. And there's, like, a handful of people in this industry that can't nobody talk about, like, negatively to me. Try it. You can't do it. If I've talked to them in their fate and they, like, just see who they are, period. Like, it's just certain people, and he's one of those people. When you think about your career and what you want to do, I mean, animal control. Yes. What was that like for you? This is a crazy ass show. When I tell you there's so much improv, there's so much, like. Is that fun for you, improv? Oh, so fun. Like, I like to say random shit. Like, I like to be like, say the first thing that comes to your mind. And sometimes it's shocking for others. Because some people wouldn't expect the things that I would say. But for me, animal control, like, working with Joel McHale and that entire cast, like, everybody is so cool and chill and there's no ego. You can tell that, you know, everybody wants each other to be funny. Everybody wants to laugh at each other. Right. There's no, like, oh, they said a good joke and now I have to. Right. You know, it's none of that. Everybody wants everybody to win. Yes. But for me, it's the closest thing to Kyla being her silly self being on camera. Of all the roles. Of all the roles that I've ever done, it's the closest to me just being silly. This is the closest to you. And being able to freely be silly and not overthink anything, not worried about my outfits, not worried about how I look. Okay. Just being silly and funny and having a good time. The reason I ask is because I wondered, you know, you have so many roles where you have. You talked about it before where you were, like, the girlfriend. Yeah. She was also the it girl. Yeah. And, like, have you ever wanted to to, like, take on roles where you were, like, crazy as hell and only had one eye? No, and I. I don't know why one eye came out. That was really. It was a really strange. I don't know about the one eye thing. I mean, that's cool, but I'm gonna worry about my peripheral. That would be a good. Like, do you want to be a slave or a troll at the same time? Why has she got a. I don't know a slave troll. I don't know. That was the walk. That was good. Don't do it again. No, no, no. Don't do it again. I did a show called Recovery Road where I play a recovering meth addict. And that was the first time where I had to, like, research a role. What kind of research? You did research on. I did research, like, just watching documentaries on drug use and watching documentaries on meth in particular. So, for me, stuff like that was exciting because, like, comedy and being funny for me is, like, it's gonna come. Like, I'm just gonna say something, and I'm probably gonna regret it later, and it's gonna be funny. But that's what it is? But it is what it is, and maybe people will laugh at it. And I learned a long time ago that they're laughing with me, not at me, you know? I learned that from 101. It was a particular episode where Spirit, played by Cicely. Yep. It was a scene where I had on a fake ponytail, and it was a sleepover. And Spirit and I had an argument, and she took my ponytail off and was like, give me back my ponytail. And the first time she did it, like, I got emotional because I felt embarrassed. And in that moment, literally, I probably was, like, 15. I learned no, no, no, no. It's comedy. They're not laughing at you. They're laughing with you. You have to laugh with them. It's funny. You know you ain't ball-headed. Right. Is there a dream role? Is there a dream. I don't know if there's a dream role. I have a couple of people that I've thought about possibly portraying that I will never tell because that's how people steal your shit. You gotta work on it. You gotta get it to get the. I think for me, I will say the dream would be to continue working in this industry and entertaining and doing it on every level and venturing into directing and producing. Yeah. In front of the camera will always be my first love. Yeah. Like, I realized how much I love it when the strikes were happening and all these things were going on. And you couldn't do anything. And I couldn't do anything. And I was like, if I don't find a way to release this craziness that's stuck inside of me when I lose my shit. Yeah, yeah, yeah. What about your kids? Are they interested in acting? Are you okay with them acting? My kids are interested in acting. My oldest is interested in acting. My youngest is more behind-the-scenes type vibe. Okay. Even though I'm trying to get her to model. And she's like, I don't want to. This is your mini-me. They're both. Like. I mean, honestly, copy-paste. But they're so much like their dad that it's like. I get when people like, when you grow up and you have kids and you be like, you look just like your daddy. You act just like. Like, I feel that constantly where I be like, for real? That's how you gonna respond to me right now? Right. That's your daddy. I feel like that man. At first, I used to be so against it. I used to be like, I don't want my kids. I'm like, mm-mm. They gotta do something else. Like, I want them to be like. Right. Doctorsters, lawyers, like, fight for us and do all this stuff. And he told me, he was like, realistically, he's like, we're in the industry. They're gonna be what they see. To the acting side of things, he does music, tattooing. He is an actual artist. He was like, it's crazy for you to think that they're not gonna want to do that. And so, at that point, when he said that to me, I kind of was like, okay, I'm gonna have to let go my little inhibitions of how I feel and see what they want to do and just support them in whatever way that they want to be supported. Because honestly, I feel I'm pretty sane. I mean, considering how crazy you could be? Real shit. Because there's so many people, and that's why I feel, for so many child actors because there's so many things They were exposed to and luckily I had a mama that was like, who are you at? And what you doing? And who do it? Right. So as long as I am here and he's there and we're able to guide them, then I'll support them like in whatever they want to do. So they are dabbling a little bit. My oldest has done commercials and she's really into the TikTok land. I mean, who's not? Me, because I'm trying to still figure it out. Josh Gad told me once he wished he had chosen a different voice for Olaf from Frozen. It's his real talking voice. Did you ever feel that way with Proud Family? No. Because you do have one of those like. Distinctive. Like we know it's you. I didn't realize that until I was at a grocery store one day and I was talking loud because I'm a loud person. I just can't. It's hard. I have practice in whispering. It hasn't. I haven't worked on it yet. I haven't got it. And somebody came over from like aisles like Penny Proud is in the store. book these you happen to classic projects like love and basketball like that Nike ad yeah campaign right it was crazy the Nike ad I had another job I got a guest spot on NYPD blue and I had to pick which one I wanted to do and my mom was like which one you want to do that's all she said yeah she's like which one you want to do and I was like I want to do the Nike one because she bad and she get to talk mess to people and me picking those there's so many things that I was able to be a part of because of those commercials and even though we are in this industry and we work and we film and we have all these beautiful opportunities like I'm so blessed to do what I do for a living like I actually love what I do and I have to remind myself all the time like this is fun for me like and I have to keep it fun right and even though it's taking care of the is a job it's do this I would be frustrated and devastated and upset what do you think I figured something else out you know why because Kyla is more than hello but thank you though I've been very fortunate to be a part of some great projects and to work with some super dope people yes and like I know a lot of people have like horror stories on set and I don't really I don't have any but also people have reputations and they're like known for certain things are known to be a certain way literally every person I've ever talked to call that was like we wrote something because we need you to be a part of it I was so trying not to fangirl because I've always been a fan of Insecure the show right and a fan of Issa in general right and I was like okay act like a normal individual don't don't do this professional you're a professional it's okay it's fine you've done this you do this you do this they're nervous too maybe I don't know they're nervous too maybe like trying to talk myself into it right and people know me from doing Dr. Doolittle's from doing the Fat Alberts the Love and Basketball so I've always had this reputation of like she's so sweet and so innocent and kind where in real life like I'm that as well but I'm with the like don't play with me big dog but don't play with me big dog you know what I'm saying but probably some people don't they don't understand you know what I'm saying and I keep that right so it's so I've always loved that show and then being there I was nervous because it was the first time first of all that I was talking the way that I was talking on a show where I was close to talking like how something Kyla would say right and then I saw Issa just in her element and watching her be a producer and a writer as well as an actress and it was inspiring yeah so just to be able to see her work and do the things that she was doing and then the love that she gave me at the same time and we filmed it late night so I wasn't even sure what happened like I'm one of those people I'm with you I'd be like okay I'm going to film it I'm going to get it done and then afterwards I'm like wait what happened what did I do well did I do the stuff did we get the moment yeah you know I'm consumed by did we get what we needed exactly but after we wrap so now there's nothing I can do about it and just being on a set that was just being around a woman who just is so like effortlessly moving through every part of her show was just inspiring and then we did a live afterwards then she was so like gracious and so sweet and so like just giving me my props and I was just like girl I'm over here trying not to fangirl over what you're doing and all the amazingness that you're bringing to life the way that you're inspiring me to do more you know I'm going to tell you this right now oh wait I'm sorry hold on that was me winning T.
