Welcome to the next squad show. I'm Chris Sachi. The squad is here to tell you the nicks are fully equipped to win game one and beyond. And I'm Gavin Shaw and I'm going to tell you why Mike Brown is potentially the coach to lead the nicks to greater heights. And I'm John Wallace and I'm just here to tell you all the good things about the nicks. And I'm XJ and Big Mitch is going to dominate this series. This is the squad show. This is Lockdown's nicks squad show. The twice a week show where nicks top gets real. No filters, no fluff, just raw takes, sharp opinions and straight up passion for the game. Today on the squad show, we tell you why Mike Brown is raising the ceiling of this team. Also how he can unlock Macalbridge is to be a playoff hero again. And why Carl at the towns, as was just mentioned, he might be the best player in this series. And finally, we'll end the show with a showdown. We'll have three way battle. But John, I want to start with you. You're around the nicks a lot. Think picture here just with Mike Brown before we get into the needy gritty, you know, the next fire Tom Tibito to bring in Mike Brown to be more dynamic to take more risks on both sides of the ball. Are you seeing that out of Mike this season? Yeah, you're seeing the office flourish and you're seeing the defense that was been instilled by the tips being carried on over by Mike Brown's because they have a veteran lady in crew. So you don't need to overly coach these guys like tell them everything they got to do because they're their season vets. They really know their job. They know their roles and they're like we were talking about in the last show. Everyone's in their prime. These are the best years as a coach and as a player to be receptive to things and to know what you got to apply to the game for each particular time of whatever time of the game. And when you're in that role and you're just dominating all the time. So I'm looking forward to Mike Brown taking the nicks to even further than the tips that last year in the conference finals. But it all started to hawks and we know it's going to be a tough series. I think the nicks should win that series, but it's going to be a tough hard fought series. But when you look at it, player for player top to bottom, I think the nicks have an upper hand. Yes, certainly, John. How can we not mention the hat, by the way? This is our playoff John Wallace hat of the show. Yes, sir, always a nick. Yes, he's locked in. He's looking great. And so that is a great answer there. Now, XJ someone with the hot hand theory as well as the nicks daily show, you know, again, big picture that a lot of pressure on Mike Brown, lots of pressure. It is almost hard to even think about like we mentioned on the squad show the other day. Every day, as you know, this is really a pressure cooker situation with Mike. We've never really seen something like this in sports where a coach is fired after bringing a team to further heights. The next one, even further heights, they want championship heights. So actually, we got to throw it right to you real quick. Again, the same question that I asked John, do we expect some of these changes we've seen Mike Brown do it a little bit? I want to see more. I want to see the starting lineup pulled early. If they're struggling, I want to see do some ride close games. If he's shooting well, it's been a little bit of that, but do expect some of that to come around now when it's really the lights are brightest and the playoff pushes on something I can say about Mike Brown specifically is that I think he's the perfect guy for this pressure pack situation. I think he has the wisdom. He has the experience, you know, he's older. He's been through everything that this league has to offer. And I think all of that stuff is extremely relevant. I don't think he feels like he's like in a situation where his legacies on the line or anything like that. If he gets fired, he'll be fine. You know, like Mike Brown is set. And so I think all of that really matters. And I've been really impressed with him this season because, you know, he's done a lot of experimentation. He's done some things where I'm like, Mike, we got to go, you know, Brunson Towns pick a role more. What's happening? This is the most effective two-man game in basketball. Why aren't we seeing it? And I just believe now I'm almost fully convinced he's been holding off on that for the playoffs. He said, I'm going to go through the regular season. I'm going to take all of the arrows from the next media and Nick's fans and the NBA media. And I don't really care because I know when it comes down to it, I know what I'm going to run in the playoffs. And he has that level of confidence and that level of security within himself to say, you know, I don't really need to go crazy right now. I know what I'm going to do when it really matters. And so I think for that reason, the pressure is not going to affect him. Now, is he going to push all the right buttons at the right time? That's the big question. To me, one of the things I want to see for Mike is to use the Nick's depth. The Hawks have eight guys barely, depending on Jack Landel. So I don't think they really trust Risha Shay. I think that it's going to be a really thin rotation for the Hawks. And I know the tips idea previously was just play your best players more. You know, when it gets down to it, play them 40 minutes. And when it really gets down to it, play them 45. But to me, there's an advantage in bringing in talented guys who are going to work hard on defense, keep your starters fresh for the ends of games. And that may determine a couple games in this series. So I think Brown has it in them. And it'll be interesting to see if he makes some of these adjustments on the fly. Yeah, nice little tease before we kick you to you, Gav about that showdown at the end. You guys will all have one X factor, all bench players, who is going to be the biggest X factor in the series. We will determine a winner, by the way. So that'll be a lot of fun, a little fire to close out the show. But Gavin, someone Mike Brown, he's been in NBA finals before he's coach LeBron James, he's coach Kobe Bryant. The next brought him in with that attractiveness, that experience that XJ just talked about. What are you expecting for some things that Tib Doe did not do in last year's playoff run? Yeah, look, I think Mike Brown, by and large, has had the right instincts this year. The not experimenting with the starting lineup, I think was was a failure. And that that opinion could obviously be proven wrong if the next go on to win a championship. And it's not to say that make alteration was guaranteed to be the right move, just the idea that like given the two year sample size of the starting lineup. And some of the promising numbers, a more limited sample size of other lineups. We didn't get to see it. I think if the next get into a tough spot, that is something you will be able to look back on that thing said. I think by and large, we've shown himself far more willing than Tom Fibido to make adjustments in games over the course of the season. He actually pivoted his defense mid season to ice more pick and rolls to be more similar to Tom Fibido's. And the next have taken off defensively since that point. And that was a really significant big picture adjustment by Mike Brown who said in media availability yesterday's made more adjustments this year that he has with any team is previously coach. I think that boasts well for the postseason ability to adjust on the fly. And even maybe after game on the hawk series, he says, hey, they actually did try to go ghost coverage on on Josh Hard and it's not working for us. Let's throw do some there. Let's go double big. I don't think they can handle it more of Mitchell Robinson and Kat on the floor. I have a little bit more faith. He will pull the plug as my dog. He's fired up about it too. We will pull the plug and make a big adjustment a little bit earlier than Tom Fibido did and will not wait until the next star desperation mode and will maybe wait until, hey, we took a punch in the mouth. I don't like the way this is looking, even within a game, I'm willing to close with a different line of a different group. He's running more organized offense towards the end of the season. The next 10 to score at a higher rate when they run that organized offense. I think the two man game and some of the actions off of it, both really, really well for their ability to attack not only the Hawks, but I think further level more difficult opponents like the Celtics and potentially the pistons down the line. Yeah, all great points. Before John asked you this question, I'm going to put this is an octinfoil hat. This is just maybe a thinking cap. Tom Tibido, we know that when we were watching Nick games, you know, when he was coaching, you can almost guarantee, okay, like let's say the 21 season, the last time the next play of the Hawks, five, six minute mark. Okay, here come Alec Birx. Here comes Nirlens in a while. He was very, very consistent. Mike Brown has offered a refreshing change, but just the fact that Gavin just said we haven't seen that starting line of pretty much since opening night when Carl Anthony Towns bristled at playing at the four and Ariel Hurt-Porty started. It's been almost the same, right? And that's one thing you could give Mike credit for mixing things up. Jordan Clarkson in the rotation out. Moe Diawara has shown really has shown flashes. I mean, his player development, I think, really needs to be something that we, you know, give him a little applause for, right? But John, for someone who, you know, again, has been a Nick multiple playoff runs, we got to ask you about the rigidity of the starting lineup. Is there something beyond just, okay, the numbers say the Nick's have to be better here? Is it more difficult to make that change with five of the highest price players on the team? Is there something from above, Mike? You know, we see that more in baseball, right? Where, oh, the GM's controlled the lineups. You know, you don't hear that in hooves, but John, just overall, you know, why is it starting lineup the one thing that we haven't seen him really by John all year? Well, because those are the best players for the Nick's and the start the game and put them in position to win. But I think KJ hit on a, XDA hit on a very, very, uh, show. good point. The nicks have been holding some stuff just for the playoffs. I mean it's really smart and it's brilliant because you know team scouts so much and they get a run on like your tendencies. But if you're running some of these first plays and first sets for the first time in the playoffs, it's harder for them to make those adjustments as hard for them to gain plan for it. So I think the fact that like you said, they were willing to take some lumps this year just to save something in their back pocket for when the playoffs come around to pull out some fresh and new and to try to confuse the Hawks on defense and hopefully it works. I think it will because you know if you're starting to put Jalen Brunson and Kat and more pick and rolls, you got an lethal shooting big man or he can roll. You got one of the you know the best guards in the NBA coming off the pick roll would have would have decision to make whether he's going to pull up. He's going to go all the way to the basket. He's going to dump dump it off to Kat. He's going to hit Kat on the pick and pop. So I mean being able to put teams in that conundrum, Jalen Brunson is going to thrive in that situation along with Kat and I love the fact that they they didn't run it that much this year but I think you're going to get a heavy heavy dose of that and it's going to start on Saturday. Yeah we really saw it come to its head in the Hawks matchup to and the regular season. Last the fourth to last game to end that next one one, one, eight, one, five, Gavin. The two big line up, something we haven't touched on yet, something the next experimented with a little bit. Do you expect that to be deployed by Mike Brown on a team that doesn't really favor this matchup against the Nick centers? Yeah, I think it'll I think it'll be a significant factor. I'll I'll save some of this talk for XJ when he reveals his X factor for the series that might be related to this but the Hawks have no answer for the next size especially with the news we got yesterday if I read it correctly at Joc Landdale's out for two weeks. I mean there is just not a they they sign Tony Bradley who we saw deployed by the Pacers last year as a nominal Mitchell Robinson container that didn't work for them exceptionally well. They they have no answer for the next size and if the next decide to turn this into a series where they just get every offense of even the Hawks are fantastic defensive rebound team right over the course of that 19 and and four run going into that final game against the heat. I believe there were fourth in defensive rebounding over that stretch top five offensive rebound team but Oyeko Kangu is six eight Jalen Johnson is a fantastic positional rebounder and yet he's only like six eight same same with Dyson Daniels right like there there's just some physics at play that does not really favor the Hawks and by enlarge that lineup is I talked about this a little bit on yesterday show that lineup has put up good numbers all season long. I haven't felt it right like just visually watching those two play together. There have been few stretches this year where they feel dominant but every so often like once every ten times they're used something clicks in and you see the big to big locks you see them just playing volleyball off the rim and if they can find that form in this postseason particularly against the Hawks I think that is something Atlanta's extremely vulnerable to and there's a world we're all talking about this like a five six seven game series I think he could be a quicker series if the Hawks don't have landale and and the Nicks lean into that size and there's just no response from Atlanta for yeah it's going to be interesting to see you know the double bigs actually last point on Mike Brown and and so these these segments just fly by guys you know the so many things we got to say and all the sudden we're we're teasing to McElbridge's talk coming up but before we get to that XJ my one Zag on the next two big lineup is just the propensity for fouls for both cat and Mitchell Robinson both of them as we know especially in playoff games can get into foul trouble do you think that's any sort of wrinkle for Mike Brown or do they gonna go full steam ahead and just try to steam off from the jump I think that they're gonna use the two big lineup to Gavin's point I think it's gonna be incredibly important for the series but I don't think they're gonna overly like use it to the point where it's gonna be their primary attack unless they need to I really do think Mike is in a situation where he doesn't have to deploy all of his best tools at the same time if they're favorited in a series like they are in this one and so I think he's going to go to bigs as necessary but I feel like and again this is Gavin so there's a little bit teasing to the show down that we have a little bit later I think it's sort of sufficient for Mitchell Robinson to be out there without Carlin's any towns in terms of the size disparity and advantage that the nicks will have and so if the nicks are just like okay we're getting hurt on the boards a little bit yeah they'll go to bigs for a little while but I don't think they're gonna like hammer it so much and I do think fouling could be part of the issue right towns will then have to guard on the perimeter a little bit more leading to potentially more foul trouble for towns I'm more concerned with offensive fouls than I am defensive fouls for him in this series and I think perhaps if he's playing at the four instead of the five we'll see that a little bit less will be more in post-sub situations more on the wing more in the corner and be expected to catch and shoot or play out of the post then he will be expected to drive and attack a big off the perimeter so in those cases I think you'll actually draw fouls a little bit less because I'm again I'm more worried about offensive fouls than defensive fouls with them so that's my that's my perspective on two bigs I mean great perspective cat amongst the league leaders in description here we go with Mikhail Bridges somebody who's been under the microscope it feels like even more this year than last year for the next but guys I just want you to go down memory lane here for a second okay we're gonna switch up the format here here's one picture look at that fans at home my three so fabulous hosts here it's it's a rule of three's picture here that picture is what led the next to a huge w last year against the Boston Celtics to upset the defending champs and really get that next season rolling downhill to make a serious run so guys I got to ask you now that you've seen those pictures I'm gonna let anybody jump in here isn't Mikhail Bridges because he's taken a bit of a step back is he capable of finding that same form that he did last year basically winning the next that game and providing fabulous two way play well I think he's arguably just you know J. Le Brown's the best two-way player in the game and you know I think Mikhail Bridges last year was like kind of scraping at that because he was playing so efficiently offensive not like even scoring a lot but he was being efficient offensively but he was a lockdown defender and let's not get it confused everyone's everyone's worried about Mikhail Bridges shooting he hasn't he's not shooting as well this year three points down it's scoring all that's down and the reason why everyone's making a big fuss because all the draft picture gave up for but the bottom line is we brought Mikhail Bridges in for defense and last year he won those games on the defensive end by being one of the few guys in a whole world that can guard Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown one-on-one and make it tough for him so that's that's Mikhail Bridges value it's not about him scoring or if he's hitting shots obviously it's some timely shots last year in the playoffs the corner three was rolling form last year in the playoffs I don't I don't foresee that not happening again this year he's those guys can lock it on the playoffs it's another it's a brand new season whatever you shot during the regular season doesn't matter the playoffs are here now he showed up last year and he showed out I'm expecting them to do the same thing this year against the Hawks and the fact that everyone's on on Mikhail Bridges because of his shooting and his scoring and all that Mikhail Bridges is a lockdown defender he can help you win games on the defensive end that's what that's what that's what he that's what he is most valuable asset is to the next right now is him being a locked to finish the game. I'm going to go down the finish line now. Those wing wing wing perimeter players when the Kell Alexander Walker gets it going this against the next the series. One guy will come in a slow down is me. Kel Bridges. So you got you got to you know give him his do up most respect. Everyone's on the guy about his shooting and his scoring. He's a defender. He's going to hit some timely and offensive games. He's able to come alive in the fourth quarter and win games. So slow down, pump your brakes. McCell Bridges going to be all right. Yeah. I have a lot of minds on McCell Bridges. X.J.O. is needs to be my PR and I'll show and be like no Gavin Gavin likes McCell Bridges. Gavin appreciates the same with Josh Hart. I get it. Get a bad rep on those two. I've said it a bunch. He's been an elite off ball defender this year. Like flat out. Like one of the best in the NBA. It has been a big reason why the Nick said like a huge stretch of this season. Like what like 15 games were the number one defense in the entire league. I think McCell was arguably like I mean you got to give OG his proud. But argue with the most of more piece of that. Like he has just been a special off ball defender. And I think that role is going to be one he has to embrace again throughout these plays. Because he always here like all these teams are going to put Jaylen Brunson the action. I know the Atlanta Hawks. Maybe even less so than a team like the Celtics. They don't particularly focus on mismatch hunting. But when they do like it's going to be crucial that like McCale can like. Helping those gaps and get deflections and get steals and rotate and be like a secondary room protector. Just in terms of verticality. Even if he's not a great shop locker like there is going to be to John's point like a lot asked of him on the defense event. And I think because so much of his impact on like OG on that end is quiet and it's not screaming off the screen like an OG steal that leads to a breakaway dunk. It goes under a pre-game. And I think that's what I think it's going to be. It goes under appreciated and that'll be there offensively for me like like I think the common trait in all those pictures you showed Chris is emotion from the Kale Bridges right like when he's screaming at the crowd after stealing a dunk. Give me that guy for 82 games and maybe you know maybe because he's played every game since high school. It just doesn't have that end in the business. Okay. I want to see him turn up in these playoffs at John's point because I know I know I know that I'm going to be a good guy. I'm going to be a good guy. To a Gavin's point, it's off-ball defense, playing that free safety, is going to be really important in the series because the Hawks run so much off-ball action, so much misdirection, so much activity away from the ball. And that is where McElbridge's thrives. He can anticipate where the ball's going. He can get in those passing lanes with his long arms, really smart defender, can take a gamble and recover and still get back in front of his man. He does all of that stuff extremely well. And last season during the playoffs, we heard that is where he became a stock monster. He has been all season this year. He's getting steals and blocks throughout the entire playoffs. And that is going to be really critical. I do think that's his primary role. Now some of the limitations of McElbridge as far as not being elite on the ball versus smaller, quicker guards, to me that limits his versatility as a defender. He is going to thrive in certain series like the Boston series, which was great for him to big wings who are trying to initiate things. Okay, great. Sick McElbridge is on them. Good luck trying to take advantage of them. You won't be able to. If it's like a situation where it's like, oh, well, we got Tyrese Maxi and we're running pick and rolls all day. That's a tougher series from McElbridge. So I think that's why we see some of his up and down play because it's he so match up dependent. He can dominate a series defensively or he can struggle depending on who he's going up against. And then as far as his offense, I just think he's so multi talented, but so unpredictable. In terms of what he excels at what he struggles with. It could be shooting. It could be mid-range shooting. He could be on fire from three. He could be ice cold from three. He could be aggressive at attacking the basket. He could get zero fouls and tire postseason run. Like who knows what you're going to see. And that's some of my issue with McElbridge is in from that standpoint. I am more of the mind of play great elite off-ball defense, take and catch and shoot threes when you get them run pick and rolls occasionally as needed. But I think that's probably going to be a tertiary role for McElbridge is. And if things are not going well for him, I got do Smith bride in my back pocket that I can throw out there. And I don't need to force force feed McElbridge is in a series like this one. Yeah, we saw that. I don't want to go ahead and go. Oh, yeah. You want to clarify something real quick. Just. I think like to both those things being true, when I say confident McElbridge is, I'm not talking about him like dropping like 25 a game or even necessarily 25 in one game. I'm saying when he has opportunities, he needs to go. Same with Josh Hart, right? Like we saw McEl. I believe it was the Hawks game, right? Where he had like a wide open three that would have put the game away and it was short. And I don't know like John maybe maybe want to tell me otherwise. I think you guys would be lying to me. If you said you thought that shot was going to go in like I'm not super confident with him, taking like wide open shots. And we've seen Jalen Brunson all year. I think to a couple of times maybe you flipped on this, but by and large, trust his teammates in big moments and saying, Hey man, you're open. You have the better shot. I'm going to give it to you. I need McElbridge is to pay that confidence off because the five first round picks and just the talent and the resume that he has having been to the NBA finals, having been to the Eastern Conference finals. He is the kind of player who should be making those shots. And there's a meatness there in certain moments when I talk about that aggressive mindset. It is shooting those shots to make those shots. And I know he has the talent within him to do that consistently. I just need to see that guy on a night to night basis. So it's not scoring 30 points. It's the like six big shots he gets. He's taking them confidently whether they go in or not. Yeah. Great point. And John, I got to ask you as we wrap up the McElbridge's chat that the streak that he has consecutive games. What is it guys? Six hundreds. I mean, going back to high school is probably like Gavin said like that. The high school man. Yeah. He has misses games since like seventh grade. And I got asked like coming off that is that what is sometimes getting him up and down play. You know, and I think that's part of his playoff success and why he's a playoff riser is because he knows these games matter and he might have to gut through some pain to play because he's a guy in his mind. I'm playing every game. Nothing will keep me off this court. But in the playoffs, one one, there's more increased and scheduled rest. The travel's a little more regular. Is that going to help him? Is that why we saw McElplay better last year? The streak is less of a factor. Well, I don't think he obviously he cares about the streak because you know, it's a long streak and is something that you wear like a badge of honor. But at the same time, he's locked him because it's the playoffs and it's that time of year again. And that there's no better time as a as a pro player and then he's sport when the playoffs start. And McElbridge is a seasoned vet now. He's been to the NBA final with the Phoenix sons. He had a chance to run his own team in Brooklyn a little bit. Now he's part of something great in New York and he's trying to take it to the next level in New York. So I think all you factor in all those things, you're going to get the best version of McElbridge this year, just like you did last year. Whatever you thought, what McElb last year went after those playoffs, you can obviously say he was a valuable asset during the playoffs. Regardless of what happened and all that. that he was worth whatever the five picks. 'Cause everyone's like the five picks and all that. But you know how many picks people miss on? Every year. You know, so when you have a guy that's an Iron Man who plays every game who checks that box, you know, there's definitely been games he probably could have sat out 'cause he's either sick, has a little injury. But he's a warrior, he's a gamer. And that's what you want on your team. And I guarantee you during these playoffs, you're gonna see that same mentality from Mikhail Bridges. - Yeah, well said, especially considering, part of the bounty the Nix gave up was because of that Iron Man, because of that availability. He's somebody that say what you want about him. And again, like you said, John, performed in the playoffs and performs every night. And really feels a lot of roles for the Nix's Gavin said. Not gametime.com. All right, guys, we're rolling back into it here. Segment number three, Carl Anthony Towns. XJ, I'm gonna let you rock right off the rip from here. You mentioned he was the key. We didn't let you talk about this enough. Why is he the key in this series? - He's the key for a couple of reasons. So he's the key both positively and potentially negatively depending on how things work. So on the negative end is where I'll start. I mean, I mentioned about the offensive fouls and some of that stuff. The other aspect is what we've seen from earlier in the season primarily is when he gets attacks, he gets those rim runs on the basket, and he misses layups, what happens? The opponent gets in transition, and that was crushing the NICS defensively. Their transition defense was not very good, and a lot of it was because Towns missing layups. So now you have your biggest player missing a layup at the rim, so he's out of the play. He's on the floor somewhere in the stands, unfortunately. And then you have the court balance is all messed up, and then the other team is running down the other direction. Now, how are you gonna lose the Atlanta Hawks in a series? It's by allowing them to get in transition. This is one of the most up tempo teams, the most efficient team in transition in the entire NBA. That is how they thrive, that is how they score. They have wings who can all are super hyper athletic, and they're going to get up and down the court. They have no bigs who are gonna struggle because Okongwu, although he's not a great rim protector, is very good in transition finishing. So this is the way that the NICS can really struggle. So Towns needs to be very good about finishing his layups, and picking his spots, not taking those uncoordinated layups where he's falling and not finishing the play, and then falling and knocking himself out of the play. So that's one end. The other end is he's gonna have all advantageous matchups regardless, either Okongwu's on him, either Jalen Johnson is on him, either John Tinkaminga, or John Tinkaminga is on him for stretches. No matter who you put on Towns in this series, he has the advantage. There's no other player that has as clear an advantage as Towns does in this series, even Jalen Brunson, speaking of potentially foreshadowing the next segment, but Dyson Daniels prevents Jalen Brunson from having the clearest advantage that he normally does in a playoff series in terms of one-on-one. So currently Towns has the biggest advantage from the offensive end for the NICS, and if he is able to score, if he is able to score in the post, if he is able to drive to the rim on Okongwu, finish those layups, if he is able to be a hub for the NICS, keeping them five out, keeping the rim protector away from the rim, then he can just absolutely dominate the series from an impact standpoint in a way that I don't think anybody else has as high a ceiling as Carl Anthony Towns does for this series. - Yeah, all great points. I'm in lockstep with you there. I think he can be the best player on the floor in the series because of the matchups you mentioned. John, I got to ask you, you mentioned this earlier, and I think it pertains to Towns as it did to Bridges. Towns this season, lowest efficiency and points for game output since his Minnesota days, since his second year in Minnesota. This wasn't from a stats standpoint his best year, but from the I-test, he actually carried the NICS a lot and his passing has been really good as of late. So what's his mindset now? He's got to throw this regular season out the window, some friction with Mike Brown, right? But recently, it seems like things are clicking. He's accepting where he's at. It's too late in the year for him to want more. Is that correct? Well, he was thrust into a new role with a new offense and just trying to find his way, but I mean, he still was first or second in NBA and double doubles this year. So he's dominant. He's a dominant player and the reason why he didn't score as much because the score was kind of evenly distributed. Jayland didn't score as much. Carlisney Townsman scores much, but OG was able to score a little bit more this year. So they were able to score a little bit better by committee some games, not being as heavily reliant upon like one or two players. Like they were so much as much as last year. But I think, like you said, Cat has the biggest disparity in whoever's guarding them, right? Whoever's guarding Cat, he can dominate them. And I would love to see more of an old school style inside out from Cat. Get it going on inside before you start popping out to the perimeter. Because that's where I worry about him getting off his a fouls and he's trying to drive my guys and he gets to hook on them sometimes. Great point. Yeah, so I prefer to get him inside more. Or just if he's going to be on the perimeter, more of a two-man game with Jayland Brunson. So he's getting a wide open look on the pick and pops. More so than just having them catch it and facing a guy, pump fake and trying to get by him. Just playing more within often. I think he was a little bit more receptive to that towards the end of the year. And because of that, he was able to finish a year a little bit stronger and have some really good games down the stretch. But after he got called out, when at one time he was on the floor and didn't get back on defense, I think you saw a new vigor within Cat in terms of his defensive accountability and a new verb for him. In terms of just being more defensive minded, being more of a quarterback out there. When you're the last on defense, whether it's him or Mitchell Robson, you got a quarterback, everyone else. You can see everything and everything's kind of in front of you. You got to talk to guys. Communication is key, especially in the playoffs. You know everything they're running. But you might need to remind the players of whatever you went over in the game plan and force them right, force them left. We're down in it. You know who the shooters are, who's more of a driver. Like you said, the Hawks want to get in transition. But it's hard to get in transition if you're constantly taking a ball out the bastard from the next score. So the next time to make sure they try to run their sets, get some bastard. But the time they do miss, you got to sprint back on defense, match up, load to the ball and have to make a couple of passives before they're attacking them around. Yeah, I think John nailed it. Like the key to cat, like it is was so many of the next non jail and runs and players offensively is operating out of a head start. And that is the advantage to two man game gifts car on 30 towns. And we saw it over and over and over again against the Hawks where to go to the ball. And if two go don't go to the ball, someone is hard hedging or soft hedging, you know, Kongoos is step away from him. And that gives cat leverage, right? Because you even in a year where he's shooting relatively poorly from three relative to his career norms, he's still such a threat from there to the point that you have to respect it. You're going to get those hard closeouts and that gives cat options, right? If the closeout is slow, he can shoot the three. If it's fast, he can get into that pump and go game. Even if Okongu covers it perfectly, if he's just a little bit off balance, cat is bigger and stronger than him and he can put his shoulder down and have that advantage. And to that previous point, right? Like not have to hook, not have to offensive foul because he already has a step. He already has an advantage going to the rim. And I think we've seen him play so much smarter with that. I think there's maybe real offseason conversations to be had, whether it's about his health or if his athleticism is in slight decline, because he's not the reason I think you saw such an uptick and offensive fouls earlier in the season was just because he wasn't as explosive and winning as cleanly off the dribble as he has in the past. But if you already give him that head start, he doesn't need to do that stuff. And in turn, he's not flying out about, right? Because he's finishing. and even when he's missing his under control, and he might get a put back, you're seeing those fly at a bounces, because again, he's not winning cleanly off that initial dribble, off that initial attack, and when he is everything in the Nick's offense works brilliantly. And I think it's very analogous to the Pacer Series last year, where teams don't have an answer for him, and it's just kind of a case of like, how aggressive is he willing to be? And to what extent is Jalen Brunson willing to empower him and say, "I don't need to be the guy. I don't need to have an ego. If that's our best matchup, I'm going to be the point guard, and we are going to cook with that matchup, and when my number is called the end of games, that's when I'll come in. I'll take over. I'll have my moment. But first quarter through the six minute mark in the fourth quarter, it is cats time to shine, and I really hope the next lean into that." Yeah, we're hoping to see as a Nick's fandom, right? Can Cat Carey for a few minutes, right? When you see Mike Brown pretty much play Jalen the whole first quarter, and then have him sit at the start of the second, or even bleed him into the second. But there will be stretches for, it's going to be Cat and four shooters, right? And it might be the Onus on HamXJ. It's a Carrie the Nick's, and we saw that at stretches last year, and I think as fans pleasantly surprised, I also think Cat's a victim of how big and lanky he is. He's not the smoothest player, but he's actually one of the most efficient drivers in the league when he gets that head start that Gavin was talking about. So what are some things that Cat's got to do? I have a list here. He's got to limit his offensive fouls, like we're all talking about. He's got to play the four well, because there's going to be some big, double big lineups that Mike Brown can deploy. But to close it up on Cat, like you said off the top, how can he be the best player in the series in addition to what the guys have already been talking about? I think you alluded to it, Chris. I think it's that four shooters around Cat lineup that we're going to hopefully see, you know, in second and fourth, and to begin fourth quarters. And I think what we need to see from Towns, which is somewhat little talked about, but I think it's so critical to his game, we need to see him as a playmaker, because he is the guy who's going to allow the Knicks to still continue to dominate, when Jalen Brunson is off the court. He is the guy who is going to be able to create offense for the Knicks with his passing from, you know, the top of the key or from the post area, even, he's great at hitting cutters who are cutting behind him when he's bringing all this attention to himself in the post, especially when he has tons of space around him. That is so critical. We see him play with guys like Jose Alvarado, who is a really nice cutter and Michele Bridges, who also loves cutting and getting to the basket. And Kat is able to make those passes, again, critical to this series, which I sound like a broken record, it's because I think it's so important. He cannot turn the ball over with his passing. He has to make those passes, or if he does not make those passes, they have to go out of bounds. They cannot be live ball turnovers, because that is where the Hawks will hurt you. And so being smart, making good decisions, making good passes, dominating when he has the advantage, all those things are going to be why Karan-Theri-Towns can be. And honestly, likely will be the most impactful offensive player in the series. Yeah, John, before we wrap it up on Towns, a lot of people, like you said, he was criticized by plenty when he was laying on the floor. A lot of people come to him and say, "You got to play in the post more. You got to play in the post more." He's just a more unique big man than someone, some of the guys that you faced in your career. He also tends like X-Jay Tush-John to turn the ball over a lot when he's in the post. For Kat, like you mentioned, you kind of want to see a steady diet. But what does he have to start? What does he have to start with in terms of his mindset early in the series and dictate this matchup? Because he will be favored. This is a matchup. He's dominated a Kongo in his career. Over 28 points to game on average, since Kat's been a Nick. What's his mindset going into this? Knowing he's got the advantage. Just kind of dominate. I mean, he's just got to be a walking double-double. Every single game just dominate. And the game's where he's not shooting well, which happens, unfortunately, but because we're all human. He's going to have off-nights, but he's got to still dominate the glass. Still got to play defense. Still got to communicate. He's still got to bring that effort and that energy. Sometimes you can have a bad game, offensively in terms of shooting, but you're so locked in, you can still affect the game and help your team win even when you're having an off-night. And that's, you're going to need some of those from those guys. They're not going to have good nights every night. Jalen Brunson not going to shoot great every night. Kat's not going to shoot great every night, but the nights when those guys are off, they still got to bring that defensive effort which they always have in the playoffs. I don't foresee anything changing this year. You know, they've kind of set a standard, something we're used to seeing as Nick's fans. And we're expecting to see that starting on Saturday at 6 o'clock. You know, the same effort, the same energy. Everything that's brought over that came over with Brunson, initially in knowledge, it's been perpetuated since he's been here. Tives helped perpetuate it. And now Mike Browns for perpetuating it. Everyone just got to be locked in. And I'm sure all the cultures are locked in. That's one thing I do miss. When the playoffs came, that lock-in intensity where you just shut off the whole world. You go back to like training camp and you just lock in. You're not even seeing your family. You're not even seeing your kids, man. You just really, really locked in on this game plan, making sure if you do lose, it's not because of something you weren't prepared for. So you're just overly prepared. You go over every scenario. The coaches are talking to you. Watch more film. You know who you're going to guard. You know, all their tendencies, you're trying to make them play to their weaknesses as much as possible. And then it becomes that chess match at the end of the game. Like, you know, like you said, Mike Browns got to push the right buttons at the right times. And then you got the best clothes in the game. And Jaylen Brunson, the Closer Game. So when the games are closed, the next guy to feel good going down the stretch when the games are closed. Because Jaylen Brunson has been the best clothes in the NBA the last couple of years. Amen to all of that. Great discussion on Carlisthi Towns. You know, that's what some of these discussions always come back to. We can talk about Mike Brown. We can talk about McElbridge's and Towns. And everyone else in the roster. Who is the biggest X-Factor off the bench for the next? XJ, we're starting with you, my friend. I feel like I got to say this. I feel like mine is not fair. I feel like I should start with some kind of handy cap just in this situation just because mine is so overwhelming. I'm going Mitchell Robinson. Mitchell Robinson is going to be a bench player in the series. Could easily be a starter. Obviously one of the nicks at least five or six best players. And it's no surprise. Everybody knows this. This is something people are talking about endlessly. No Hawks player can keep Mitchell Robinson off the glass. They don't have enough size. There's no landale. Guess what? Landale couldn't do it either, even if he was playing. Their biggs are all undersized biggs. Mogay is a undersized big. Okongwu is an undersized big. Risha Shay is not a big and would get completely crushed by Mitchell Robinson. There's a yet none of these guys have a chance to keep Mitchell Robinson off the boards. He's too big, too athletic, too aggressive. He's been doing this for years. He can get underneath leverage on anybody, including like a guy like Joel and Bede. If Bede's not grabbing him and pulling him down by the legs or something like that. There is no player in the league. Besides maybe a healthy Steven Adams who can compete with Mitchell Robinson in this way. And Gavin talked about the two biggs and we talked about that a little bit. And I think that's going to be a factor. But I think Mitchell Robinson alone is enough to dominate this series in just 20 minutes per game. I don't think he needs to play 30 minutes. I don't think he needs to be out there a ton. I think 20 to 25 minutes every game in this series is enough for the Knicks to dominate his minutes. And I also think there's a couple of additional factors here. So we I've talked about the pace a lot of this series. And I think the pace is critical because the Hawks want to play up tempo. And the Knicks are still, which is funny enough. One of the slowest pace teams in the league. They play at a faster pace in half court. But in terms of overall number of possessions, they are not a fast pace team. And they're going to want to slow it down. down. And guess what? When you play Pick and Roll basketball with Mitch Robinson and have space around him or you play double big, you can slow the game down and still have advantages matchups. And your possessions are going to be long because Mitch Robinson is going to get you an extra one, two, three, four, five, sometimes shots on a given possession. And also, we know that the Hawks' advantage is the possession game. That's where they hang their hat. They're like, they want to win the possession game. They want to win on turnovers both ways. They want to win on rebounding both ways. But Mitch completely upends that whole approach. It's worst case scenario for them. It's like if I was pretty good at basketball, I'm like, you know, my competitive advantage is my athleticism. And then I play a Sard Thompson. Look, all my advantages gone now. Sorry. I'm screwed. And that's the situation that the Hawks are in when they go up against Mitchell Robinson. I think he's going to absolutely dominate this series and is the X factor. Good closing statement right there, too. John Wallace, your biggest X factor here in the showdown. That was a nice take. X, yeah. I like that. Thank you. But I'm going to go with Dulce McBride because he's the only guy in the series that can actually score 20 and stop the other guy from scoring 20. He's the biggest factor coming off the bench. He's the best scoring from both teams coming off the bench. He's shooting over 40% from three. He's been like, like you're saying about Mitchell Robinson X, he could be a starter. Dulce McBride could start for a lot of teams in NBA. And every time he gets starting minutes, he puts up starting numbers. So I mean, he's definitely going to be the biggest factor. I think coming off the bench right now. It's for the Hawks is Caminga and Risha Shay. And neither one of them are going to have been much of a factor off the bench lately. The last game against the Knicks. Caminga had five points. And Risha Shay, I think scored two. So I mean, not worried about them from an offensive standpoint. But once like someone like Nikkei, you know, I keep bringing up Nikkei, Alexander Walker because he's one of their X factors for the Hawks, like in terms of scoring. And you know, he got big games. He had the big game against the Knicks last time. But I think someone like Dulce McBride could come in and slow someone like him up and then also make him have to work another in. You know, and that's why that's why I think Dulce McBride will be the X factor because of what he can do on an offensive and defensively. He's the best two way player coming off the bench, arguably in the NBA. Mm. Love it. Again, strong closing. You guys know how to make an argument. You guys are all in good shape there at Gavin. Your biggest X factor in the showdown. Um, I'm going to cheat because Chris said it was okay. And you guys took clearly the two best options. So I'm going to go with Tyson Daniels, who is not off the bench. But to me, like he is the definition of an X factor in this series. Uh, Jaylen Brunson. I've talked about a lot over a bunch of shows this week. And I hope that the 10 days off just proves me wrong. I don't think he's right physically right now. You look at some of the highlights from past post seasons, past regular seasons he's put together. He simply does not look as explosive even earlier this season. There are games like I always commented on our podcast where you just like he gets separation easily and he doesn't have to work for it. Even it gets great defenders. And that's not what I've been seeing. But I thought Dyson Daniels and until the fourth quarter with the next to a whole lot of different things to get Dyson Daniels off of him. Um, Dyson Daniels smothered him in that last match up. And if he's able to turn up to that extent defensively, Dyson Daniels, I actually talked about this is someone who tends to learn over the course of games. I would expect that to translate to playoff series for the first time in his career. He might get stronger and stronger over the course of his series. And Jaylen, even at like even if he's hypothetically 85% 90% he's too good. He's going to have games where he goes off. We saw before this year, like he to three game stretch where he absolutely cooked Dyson Daniels after Dyson Daniels won round one of that duel between the two teams. That being said, I think if he's less than a hundred percent, there's a world where Dyson smothered him and then offensively, we talked about this last show. The next are good employees some ghost coverage on Dyson Daniels. Have Carlin three towns on him. The Hawks will counter by using him as a hub right. Lot of dribble handoffs, lot of screeners flipping screens, same thing the next two with Josh Hart when the team is completely ignoring him. If he can successfully free up Nakedeel and CJ for wide open shots, if he can as a terrible shooter all year, but one that's been slightly trending up of late, if he can just hit 35% of his open, three's 40% of his open threes, that might be enough to play the next out of that goes coverage at least for small stretches. There's a world where I think on both ends of this of the court, it could be the defining player in this series, even if on paper, he's only like seventh best guy in the series. Love it. I mean, hey, I think we need a little bit more data here. I want a 90 second pitch from all you guys. We'll go in the same order we just did because there is pretty neck and neck right now. So we're going to like this is a cool argument. I want another closing statement. XJ, Y is Mr. Robinson. Once again, the biggest X-Factor in addition to what's been said, and maybe you can even dig at someone else's argument too. Let's get really nitty gritty here to close the show. I honestly can't I can't dig at anybody's argument. John and Gavin both made great arguments and I think interesting things about both of them is like obviously Dyson Daniels with his DHO actions is going to be difficult to go because we know the Nix have trouble getting over screens. And so if you're just playing two on one in those situations, it might neutralize the Nix best strategy to neutralize Dyson Daniels. And then to John's point, like John just said, do you smig bride and you know, I'm one over at that point. I don't have too many counter arguments for these guys. I will just say I do think I do think Mitchell Robinson, his capacity to win minutes in a short period of time is one of the highest leverage things that the Nix have in this series. So not having to play many minutes and winning those minutes allows the Nix to have a cushion if the starters don't get up to a best start if they're struggling in other areas. And so I think that that is an advantage that we don't talk about as much where he can play 20 minutes and the Nix win those minutes by eight points. That's a huge cushion for the other 28 minutes that they're playing that he's not on the court. John was Syracuse number 44 is retired. The accolades picked themselves which are closing statement. I don't have any digs either. Besides the fact that Dyson Daniels did get cooked by Jaylen Brunson for 32 and seven. We talked about that last segment. And Mitchell Robinson, I love everything and Mitchell Robinson brings just worried about his you know the free throw shooting sometime. And I think that's what makes Duesburg bride the obvious X factor the the the best biggest X factor in the series because he's the best two way player. He can he's gonna knock down his free throws. He's gonna knock down timely open shots and he's gonna be a lockdown lockdown defender. I mean you're you're gonna whoever he's guarding is gonna have a tough night scorn. I don't care who it is whoever whoever Duesburg bride comes in and starts guarding is immediately gonna have a rougher time than whoever was guarding him prior because Duesburg bride he's like a little pit bull he gets up under guys. He's slapping at the ball he's slapping at your arms. He's an aggressive defender. I love that he's like an old school. He's a throwback kind of defender. He's getting up and he's gonna get a couple files. That's all right. If I fight you from slapping your face I'm all right with that. You know now you live upset. You're not thinking about the game. You might be thinking about you know wanting to fight me or something like that. And that's all right too. But I'm telling you Duesburg bride is gonna be the biggest factor because of those two things. He's the best offensive player coming off the bench and he's the best defensive player coming off the bench. No disrespect in Mr. Robinson. Mitch Robinson is a great defender. Cogs up to Mino. He's a shot blocker rebound all that stuff. But this as we know this game's gonna be on the perimeter and we got the Hawks perimeter of players gonna have to be slowed down. They're gonna be slowed down by guys like Duesburg bride. Again very good points Gavin Dyson Daniels. You made a great point about her shooting. I think that's something next half to worry about because it is trending up. I got you shot terribly to start the year but it started to open things up. He might change the whole next game plan if he gets hot from three. First of all I just need to say John John's got me fired up. I wish game one was starting in like five days. I'm ready to run through a wall man. I see no one going down. The Syracuse locker room is back in the day. I'm buying all them. I might give them the win just based off that but I my argument for Dyson Daniels at the moment the qualifier that I am I am cheating by taking it. The Hawks we talked about a lot on our share right the Nick starting lineup just plus 1.5 on the year the Hawks have the second best starting lineup in basketball that has played at least 500 possessions together this season. They have a plus 21.4 net rating and yet the last time these two teams played the Nick starters won their minutes by three points and I think it's specifically because of how the two teams like treated coverage and treated the weaknesses on either side the Hawks played the Nick straight up and the Nick's employee that goes coverage on Dyson Daniels. I do think quince nider and Brad Roland the locked on Hawks host when he came on my pot said as much like they treated it in terms of minutes and in terms of intensity like a playoff game in terms of strategy though they treated it very much like a regular season game and I have a feeling they are going to come out and spam Dyson screening spam Dyson handoffs from the first second of the game and whether or not that plays the nicks out of that coverage or if the nicks find their own counters and in turn to me like Dyson Daniels success in his coverage is extremely tied in to the nicks taking out Jaylen Johnson and while Jaylen Johnson is not like some all-world isolation score he is the Hawks best player he is passing is the heart and soul of their offense and if Kat is allowed to roam and you are allowed to defend the Hawks essentially 5 on 4 Jaylen Johnson offensively in the And the half court loses a whole lot of relevancy in this series. And to me, that is directly linked to the impact that Dyson Daniels makes. So you essentially get to take out two guys at once. And then you're living in a world where you need to kill to score 30. You need C.A. McCollum to score 30. Those guys can do that. I don't think they can do it as consistently as Jalen Brunson, Carl Anthony Towns, and somebody that makes tertiary guys can pour point at sin. So to me, that battle with Dyson Daniels is going to define this series pretty much more than any other single factor. So you guys should be paid into sports talk. All incredible, incredible takes.
