Killer's Obsession with Brother's Girlfriend Ends in Murder

Stephanie Eldridge, a 21-year-old woman, disappears from her home in Idaho Falls on a Monday morning, prompting a police investigation. Her boyfriend, Mike Jimenez, reports her missing after finding her phone missing and her purse still at home, while her mother, Lynette, noticed something was wrong—Stephanie would never leave her baby unattended. Police initially find no signs of forced entry, but Kenny Jones, their half-brother and the last known person to see her, raises suspicion due to inconsistencies: he claims to have been injured by tree branches, which is medically implausible, and his story about using her phone and working at a car wash contradicts timelines. A polygraph test reveals Kenny lied, admitting to an argument with Stephanie and a lack of truth in his account. Over the years, the case remains cold until detective Jessica Marley reopens it in 2014. She reviews old evidence, re-interviews witnesses, and discovers that hair and black electrical tape from Kenny’s car match those found on Stephanie’s body. A former cellmate, Eddie, claims Kenny confessed to suffocating her during an argument and burying her in a shallow grave. Despite Kenny’s refusal to cooperate, the forensic evidence is conclusive. In 2019, he is arrested and later pleads guilty to voluntary manslaughter, concealment, and obstruction, serving 15 years. The case highlights how persistence and renewed forensic analysis can bring justice decades after a crime occurs.

9-1-1, where's your emergency? Yes, is this the Sheriff's Department? This is 9-1-1, sir. How can I help you? I need to get ahold of the Sheriff's Department. I found a dead body up here on the hill. I'm sorry, you found a dead what? A dead body. Okay, where was it at? It's on the sunny side dump hill, going up in the hill, up on the hill. I'm not a forensic pathologist, but it's a kid or a woman, small girl with red hair. Okay. When there's a job call, do a necklace. That's what I see. Okay, all right. I'll have them on their way out there for you. It's Monday afternoon, and Idaho Falls police respond to a plea for help. Minutes ago, 26-year-old Mike Jimenez called 9-1-1 to report that his live-in girlfriend, 21-year-old Stephanie Eldridge, is missing. When Idaho Falls police arrive at his home, Mike and his mother, Lynette, are waiting for them. Lynette tells officers that earlier today, around 12:30 p.m., she swung by the house on her lunch break and found Stephanie and Mike's four-month-old daughter inside the house. But Stephanie was gone. Instinctively, Lynette knew something was wrong. Stephanie would never go off and leave her baby like that. Lynette called Mike, and he rushed home from work. That's when they discovered Stephanie's purse and wallet were still at the house, but her cell phone was missing. Mike says he called Stephanie's phone over and over again. There was no answer. Mike and Lynette also called Stephanie's family and friends, hoping someone knew where she was. But no one had seen or heard from her at all. Fearing the worst, Mike called 911. With Mike and Lynette's consent, officers searched the entire house. There are no signs of forced entry, and officers detect no evidence of a crime. But Mike's half-brother, 19-year-old Kenneth "Kenny" Jones, lives with them, too. When officers speak with him, they eyeball him. They eyeball something suspicious. Kenny has fresh scratch marks on his neck. Kenny tells police he accidentally walked into some tree branches. But officers are skeptical. If Kenny did walk into some tree branches, odds are his scratches would be horizontal, not vertical. And according to Lynette and Mike, they both left for work this morning before Kenny did, which makes Kenny the last person to see Stephanie alive, before she went missing. As the search for Stephanie gets underway, detectives quickly obtain a warrant for Stephanie's cell phone records. Based on those records, the last outgoing call on Stephanie's cell phone was made at 8:30 a.m. this morning. When they look up that number, detectives discover it's for Cardon's car wash, Kenny Jones' employer. Two days after Stephanie's disappearance, detectives ask Mike, Lynette, and Kenny to come down to the station for further questioning. Do you like Kenny? Yep. Act like Kenny, or? Yeah, that's fine. All right. Um, Monday, you remember what time you woke up? Probably, I normally wake up about 8:00. Okay. Might hit the snooze button a couple times. Kenny says once he got up, he asked Stephanie if he could borrow her cell phone. So he could call in to work. So you said you called work? At 8:30. And what phone number's that? I don't know, 5-6, that's Cardon's, right? Yep. Cardon's is the one they were gonna call in. And you called at 8:30, and who'd you talk to? I talked to Velma at first, and I was starting to ask her, and she said that I better call and talk to Shay. And I called when she transferred me back home. He transferred me over to Shay. I told him it'd probably be about 11:00 before I came in there. And he said, "Okay, that'd be fine." Now, Shay, is he your manager, or? Um, he's one of the sales managers, my own personal managers, Gary, and the detail shop. So she has to talk to Shay, and Shay told you what? I asked him if he'd tell Gary that I probably wouldn't be until about 11:00, 'cause I needed to get my car fixed. And he said, "That's fine, take as much time as you need." Okay. But Gary wasn't there at the time, so I wanted to go in to at least talk to Gary, because if I don't tell my manager and say, "Shay, leave somewhere," that can get me written up at work. And so I went in. So you went in anyway, okay. Yeah, and Gary was there, and he said, "Well, let's just have you hang out for a minute "and kind of see who shows up so we know where we're at." And we had enough people show up that he said it'd be fine. So you didn't work, you just hang out? Oh, I worked for like 45 minutes. If I'm gonna be there, I'll clock in to-- Okay. That's fine, huh? Yeah. 'Cause everyone's gonna pay. Everyone's gonna get paid. Yeah, okay. Okay, so you go work. What were you doing when you work? I work in the detail shop. We just, we clean the cars that come in for details. We shampoo the carpets and the seats and clean the vinyl and get the scuffs off. Scuffs off of it. Okay, that's what you're doing, okay. And so then you leave there and go right back to your home? Yep. And when you got home, Stephanie was there? Yep. Okay, who else was there? Nobody at that time. Okay, and then what happens? Stephanie said she'd be right back. Said okay. Okay, starts at home. She left. My mom came. Talked to my mom for a minute. Slow down, everybody. Just don't get down. And she leaves just immediately after you got home? Yep, her and the baby. I figured they were just going to the store. Mike said that she had to go get some Pepto-Bismol and stuff this morning. Yeah, home. Stephanie's there. She says she's gonna leave. She grabs the kid. She leaves. My mom comes home. How long? How long? After Stephanie left, did your mom come home? Five, ten minutes. Okay. I used my mom's phone. I called my dad. At that point, Kenny recalls his mom left to go to the post office and then back to work. So she leaves. You're home basically by yourself at that point? Yep. Okay, and what happens? Stephanie leaves. She goes to work. What happens? Stephanie comes home. You know what time that was? Not exactly. It was just five minutes after my mom left. Just right after. I leave, can go back to work to see-- How long were you there for you? How long after Stephanie arrived did you leave? Just right away pretty much. And you go where? To work to see if they need me. And they said no. Did you talk to them? Yep. Who did you talk to? Oh, Gary. So you went and talked to Gary? I just went and talked to my manager again. And I asked them if they needed me and they said, "No, we're slowing up today. "You can take the rest of the day off." Kenny says he left work and drove over to his friend Colby's house. Okay, why? I called him and told him I was coming from work. You called him from work? Yeah, and told him I was coming over there and he said, "All right." Okay. I went there for a minute. We played some video games, hung out for a half hour, 45 minutes, and I left for home. Anybody else here that Colby's ever been to him? His wife. Anything else happen Monday you wanna tell me about? Nothing. Just like a normal day, just another day. Another day, okay. The detective inquires about the scratches on Kenny's neck. When did that happen? Monday morning. That same Monday morning, what time? Walking into work. The first time or the second time? The first time. First time, okay. So did you tell anybody about it? I mean, you're bleeding. Didn't Gary ask you about it? They asked about it. They said, "How'd that happen?" And I said, "Out there." Okay, so Gary asked you about it? Everybody's asking about it. Gary asked me about it. Jesus asked me about it. My mom asked me about it. Your mom asked you later, when you saw her? Yeah, my brother, everybody. So you told Gary and Jesus that the tree attacked you, huh? Yeah. Basically. Okay. And they just kinda chuckled, and that was the end of it. When questioned about his relationship with Stephanie, Kenny insists there were no issues. Me and her always got along. We've never once, once ever, ever gotten in an argument about anything, never. No problems, no nothing? I get along with all her kids. Her kids love me. That's it. Like I said, we're starting from the last known person to be with her. okay we're working backwards and that's that starts with you okay so uh what we need to do is we need to confirm what people tell us is true and accurate oh yeah okay and there's several ways of doing it one is to talk to witnesses or other people they talk to and you know employers or whatever uh anything like that the other is just uh what you tell me is questionable and then we can always do a polygraph yeah okay you ever taken one of those i haven't okay did you have any problem taking one today you go ahead and take one oh yeah okay as detectives set up the polygraph equipment kenny keeps talking the thing that i don't know that troubles me the most i don't know about everybody else is that the neighbor didn't hear anything and if somebody were to come in our house and try to abduct her the neighbors would hear her scream if somebody would even fall off the couch onto the floor i mean the neighbors can hear that good well then as a police officer we have to we have to investigate all sorts of different angles perhaps she left uh she left willingly willing with someone so therefore there would be no screaming no never or uh you know maybe it was done in such a quick and cold fashion that uh um she didn't have time to get up in the middle of the night she could have been i don't know okay but she's not she's not really a little girl i mean she's small kind of but she's somebody were to try and hurt her she would fight i mean she would probably die fight how would she fight i bet she would swing those punches and scream and try to pick up anything she could she above hitting somebody in the face oh she she would nail somebody in the face she was scratch your eyes out stuff like that i don't know about scratch scratch your eyes out stuff like that i don't know about scratch i know she would i don't know about scratch i know she would i don't know about scratch i know she would i know she about i thought everything was gonna be okay i thought it was gonna be okay i thought it was gonna be okay mike and lynette also deny any mike and lynette also deny any mike and lynette also deny any involvement in stephanie disappearance and their alibis check out but Kenny is a different story when police question his manager and his colleagues at the car wash they all say the same thing on the morning Stephanie went missing Kenny never showed up for work detectives also speak with Kenny's other alibi his friend Colby that's his sister-in-law she's missing you've probably seen the stuff on the news right watch TV but I've heard it on the radio okay well here's why you're getting called by it's such a strange hour to come in and talk we treat every missing person investigation like it's a homicide so it's a very serious thing and we're very interested in finding her in whatever condition okay your I interviewed Kenny today and your name came kept coming up yeah well Kenny said that that you two were together yesterday no I haven't seen Kenny in a long time okay my wife will verify that in fact Colby swears he hasn't seen Kenny in months Kenny has called me a couple times and I just blow him off who was the last time he called I'm not sure it's been a couple weeks but I know every once in a while he'll call me and I just blow him off because I know he's bad news why yeah he's the biggest question I got is why did Kenny drag you into this trying to use you as a loser I don't even like him he's like I don't even know six or seven years younger than me just so if you ever alibi'd him up in the past or ever what giving him an alibi no for him or anything no I'm not I don't even associate with them even though they highly suspect Kenny killed Stephanie without a body detectives don't have enough evidence to prove it years go by and the case goes cold in 2009 Kenny Jones is jailed on misdemeanor drug and resisting arrest charges during his incarceration Kenny befriends his cellmate Eddie in turn Eddie goes to police and says he's got some information regarding Kenny they're going to want to hear according to Eddie Kenny confessed he killed Stephanie Eldridge and he described her death in detail Kenny told him that morning he and Stephanie got into an argument in a rage he hit Stephanie and suffocated her until she stopped fighting back that's when Kenny said he quote snapped out of it and realized what he'd done he wrapped Stephanie's body in some bedding put her in his trunk then drove to a remote spot and buried her in a shallow grave but he refused to tell Eddie exactly where that grave is Eddie also mentions that Kenny referred to Stephanie as his girlfriend not his brother's and said he'd been in love with her however without the evidence to back it up Eddie's statement is hearsay and the case stalls again a year later a man is out for a hike along Idaho Falls eastern foothills 911 where's your emergency yes Sheriff's Department this is 911 sir how can I help you I need to get hold of Sheriff's Department I uh found a dead body up here on the hill I'm sorry you found a dead what a dead body I'm not a forensic pathologist but uh yeah the kid or a woman small girl with red hair I okay when there was a job call to a necklace that's what I see okay all right I'll have them out there on their way out there for you when police arrive at the scene the hiker directs them to a small grove of trees the victim is wrapped in a blanket and a sheet she appears to be female her face and her hands are wrapped in black electrical tape using dental records the medical examiner identifies the victim as Stephanie Eldridge but her remains are so decomposed he can't determine her exact cause of death three years and one day after she went missing Stephanie's family is finally able to lay her to rest at her funeral loved ones remember her as a proud and devoted mom who dreamed of opening her own dance studio and inspired others with her relentless positivity even when life got tough meanwhile investigators go back and re-examine evidence found in Kenny Jones's car which had been impounded and searched by police in 2007 after Kenny failed his polygraph test that includes strands of reddish-brown hair found in his trunk and brush in the vehicle's undercarriage that looks similar to the location where how far would you go when someone threatens everyone you love who can you trust from Academy Award winner Ben Affleck animals stars Affleck Kerry Washington Gillian Anderson and Steven Yeun when a Los Angeles mayor Carol candidate's son is kidnapped he and his wife are pulled into a web of Deception forced to make choices that could tear their world apart watch animals now playing in select theaters and on Netflix rated R tap the banner to learn more Stephanie's remains were found they also re-interview their prime suspect Kenny Jones Kenny is behind bars on third degree arson charges once again he says he's no killer and police conclude there's still not enough evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he killed Stephanie then in 2014 Idaho Falls PD cold case detective Jessica Marley brings fresh eyes to the investigation over the course of the next three years she reviews every piece of evidence re-interviews witnesses and identifies more holes in Kenny's 2007 police interview she becomes convinced that Kenny Jones is Stephanie's killer and she makes it her mission to bring him to justice in 2017 after she's promoted to sergeant detective Marley approaches police brass with an offer if they allow her to focus on Stephanie's case full-time and provide her more resources she will solve this homicide once and for all her supervisors agree to the deal and Sergeant Marley jumps into action she teams up with the TV show cold justice which provides funding for an advanced forensic testing evidence submitted for retesting includes the hair strands found in Kenny Jones's trunk as well as fragments of black tape that were found in there too sergeant Marley suspects it's the same black tape found on Stephanie's body and if it's a match it could help her nail Kenny Jones as she waits for the results Sergeant Marley and a fellow detective pay Kenny a visit in prison where he's serving more time for a parole violation Kenny can I call Kenny oh yeah Sergeant Jessica Marley hi nice to meet you you too there's water can I get you something else uh no I just I have a migraine this morning so if I'm a little groggy that's why before I talk to you you are in custody and so I have to let you read over your rights your Miranda rights and then we can talk cool all right okay make sure you can read that and understand it let me know if you have any questions okay no I've read them before I I know well um I've been waiting a long time to talk to you okay a long time you've been down here before and you've talked to lots of different detectives yeah um about Stephanie yes ma'am right so that's the reason that you're here I don't want to I want to make it very clear I'm not going to tell you too many lies and at this point I would expect that you don't and let me just explain and then then you you feel free to talk after that okay I've been working on this case for three years I have a whole team of people working on this case we sent things to a lab technology changed we have all the old photos all of everything that and I went through every single piece of this case personally we went back and talked to every single person in your life with the mind games or you can just let me go back to Jefferson County the last detectors were nothing but rude to me and I'm not gonna sit here and deal with it Kenny I'm not I'm not being rude I promise you okay and I understand that you had some bad experiences or feel like you had bad experiences you know and I definitely am not trying to do that at all okay I haven't done anything I have nothing to say to you guys if that's what this is going to be you to send me back to Jefferson County. - Hey, Kenny, before you-- - No, I'm not, no. I'm not saying anything to you guys. - Do you want to know any information that I have? - I could care less. I could care less, ma'am. And there's nothing against you two. I know you're just doing whatever it is you're doing, but I ain't got nothing to say to you guys. - All I am asking is that you'll just listen to what I have to say about evidentiary things that we were able to extract that they weren't able to do when those other police officers talked to you. What I want you to hear is I want you to explain to me why we would find anything that would link you to the black tape. That's what I'd like to know. Because here's what I want to hear from you. I put this whole thing together in my head. And I have a pretty good idea of what happened. But I want to hear from you about that. You don't know all the people that we've talked to, people in jails, when you were in jail, the people that have come forward. And you know how that goes. Some folks are going to lie. But the people that we talk to, we go through very carefully to make sure what they're telling us is true. Because everybody wants to work their way out. You know that. They all lie, right? So did Eddie lie to us when he talked to us? - Probably. - Right. - So did Eddie lie to us when he talked to us? - Probably. - Probably. - Probably. - If I could show you evidence of what he told us is true, would that make any difference for you? - No evidence, because I haven't talked to anyone about this at all. So anything anybody said to you is stuff they've speculated and put in their own heads. - Do you not want to hear what Eddie had to say about it? - I could care less what Eddie had to say about it. I could care less what anybody had to say at this point. I don't want to hear anything from you guys. - Your hands are shaking. Your head's hurting. - Yeah, my fucking head's hurt. It's hurt since today. - When you came into jail-- - I've been throwing up all morning. I didn't even eat my fucking breakfast because I'm so fucking nauseous. Don't act like you fucking know me or what's going on. I don't have to stay worried, you guys, until I have a fucking attorney present. And how's that? I'm not saying anything. I plead the fifth. Give me my fucking attorney or let me go right now. Gone. - Kenny refuses to cooperate, but the evidence speaks for him. Summary:

FAQs

Mike Jimenez called 9-1-1 to report that his girlfriend, Stephanie Eldridge, was missing after she failed to return from her home.

Kenny had fresh, vertical scratch marks on his neck, and his alibi was inconsistent with the timeline. He claimed to have gotten scratches from tree branches, but the scratches were vertical, which is unlikely from tree branches.

The last outgoing call on Stephanie's phone was made at 8:30 a.m. to Kenny Jones' employer, Cardon's car wash, suggesting she may have been in contact with him that morning.

No, coworkers at the car wash said Kenny never showed up for work that morning, contradicting his claim of having gone in to talk to his manager.

The polygraph indicated Kenny had not told the full truth about his interactions with Stephanie, as he later admitted to having a physical argument with her and lying about what happened after she left.

Stephanie's remains were discovered wrapped in a blanket and sheet in a grove of trees, with her face and hands wrapped in black electrical tape, and identified through dental records.
