Ken Marino & David Wain w/ Mark Normand & Sam Morril - We Might Be Drunk Podcast

The podcast episode features hosts and guests Ken Marino and David Wain in a lively, informal discussion centered on the Knicks' playoff series against the Spurs. The hosts recount attending games, dealing with rowdy fans, and criticizing referees, noting that a Trump-related event disrupted the usual joyful vibe. They also discuss the challenges of the series, including player performance and controversial calls. The conversation shifts to Marino and Wain's new comedy film, "Gail Dottry and the Celebrity Sex Pass," starring Zoë Deutsche, about a woman who seeks to even the score after her fiancé uses their celebrity pass. The guests share their writing process, which involves intensive seven-day sessions, and offer practical filmmaking advice, stressing the importance of pre-production, staying true to the script, and remaining adaptable. They reflect on their careers, including "The State," "Party Down," and "Wet Hot American Summer," sharing anecdotes about working with Eddie Murphy and John Slattery. The episode also covers humorous personal stories, such as muggings, and tangents about Spuds McKenzie and the film "Obsession." The hosts promote the movie's July 10th release, a special ticket promo, and the Middle-Aged Dad Jam Band's upcoming tour, blending comedy, industry insights, and casual banter throughout.

Hey folks, here we are. We're back. It's a sunny summer day out there in Manhattan. I'm sweating. It's hot, buddy. I'm wearing all fabrics top to bottom. I love that stuff. Great stuff. Thank you. I like free stuff. Yeah. And this is better than anything I own. It's like nicely made and there's no stains on it. Yeah, when do I so cheap? Yeah, it's good stuff. They're hooking it up. I'm I'm hurting dude. I'm just like this Nick series is taking years off my life. It's crazy. I know. I know. It's like a Rasik's beer drama. The ups, the downs, the hate, the fighting, the joy, the city's a buzz. It was a brawl in Bryant Park, by the way. Then the Trump stuff threw a wrench in it. It's like, this is like a movie. There's so many layers. It took a long time to get into the arena because of the Trump stuff. I bet. Then he fell asleep. I know. I don't know PM pride minister. It dude. It was that was wild. I went to game one in San Antonio, flew down tech Shane Gillis. I was like, are you going tonight? And he goes, nah, the tickets are too expensive. I don't want to. And then he's like, they just went down. I'm going to go. Oh, he's like, come over. I'll get a party bus. We'll go together. Wow. McCusker Shane. Tommy Pope, we had a crew. My boy Chase was there. We. Wow. Counting white claws on the way. Shane's. It's a good sports drink. Because I go down easy. It gets the buzz going. Then he gets switched to something else. All right. I'm a high new man. It's all the same shit. Yeah. One is vodka. One's malt liquor. High new in his vodka. Yeah. That's the beauty of it. It's a vodka. It's like an RTD. It's a vodka soda. I even know that. Yeah. Yeah. I learned that the hard way. But, well, we were going down. Shane's. He's blasting like New York state of mind. He's blasting like not. You know, I can't wait for him. I'm not spending any money to I'll buy tickets and get a party bus. Yeah, those party buses aren't aren't cheap. Yeah, it was pretty wild. I love it. And that game was crazy. Spurs fans are pretty cool. Honestly. They were respectful. They were fucking me a little bit. It was playful. It was cool. Okay. Somebody had the great tweet. Did you see that when the when being all the guys are walking into the arena out of the bus? One guy looks like this. Looks like the integration of schools. Because like the black kids and everybody's like, fuck you, bitch. Fuck you. All the way to New York, Long Island guys like kill yourself, bitch. And they're like, it was it did feel like a bit of a war. After the game, everyone was cool, but there were some all the next fans kind of banded together. We're all like high five. And then, and then a few a few of those hardcore Latino. Spurs fans are like motherfucker, you better watch yourself and like we're all circling each other. That's great. It was wild. But yeah, it was it was an experience. I've never I kept chickening now and I was like, it's now or never, man. Yes. You don't have to tell us what you spent. But was it more than 10? No. Okay. More than five. I don't know. It's not the conversation. It was a lot. All right. Well, you got no children or pets. You're fun. No roommates. I got nothing. You got nothing. Oh, no, this is a guy. This isn't real. You sure? Looks pretty real real. Oh, this guy hanging. You got it. What are you doing, New Yorkers? Come on. We're not expect. We're not an open-carry state. If that's the referee, then you do it to the referee. Yes. You want to hear some shit? Totally. Just after the next game, Mark Davies, the ref who fucked us in game three, walks over to him and hands him a card and goes, you're my son's favorite director. He's a filmmaker. So now I'm fucking. I know this about Mark Davies. I'm going to heckle his ass. Your kid's work is derivative. He's a trash filmmaker, bro. Your son fucking sucks. He's a hefty. Yeah. You wish you were just. Damn, dude. Wow. That's great. Good for the kid. Have a favorite director. That's good. Oh, I guess he's in film school. He's in film. What is that? Who cares? I'm just saying. He screwed us. We played like shit. We played like shit in game three. But we didn't play well enough. I thought it was pretty pretty gutsy. There was some fucked up calls. They're protecting Wembee like a motherfucker. I mean, that neck throw now was crazy. Crazy. That was because he gets one more flag when he suspended. So they're protecting him. Oh, interesting. He's gotten too many. Yeah. I mean, it's fucking crazy. He's got no experience. He's a very good player, but he's very talented. He's too young and although you see that photo, you're sketching in the park. It's starting to annoy me. We get it. You're a fucking jack of all trades. We're a Renaissance man enough. But that's the French in him clearly. No American black guys like, let me paint this flower, this lilac. Look at this kid. I mean, he's a really good player. I love that. But he's starting to annoy me. I think people are going to start to see he's pretty dirty. It's also like, he can't be 75 in dirty. Yes, exactly. The best. I agree. It's like if Clooney was roofing women. You're already super hot. Stop. That's a good to do it on your. Yeah, exactly. You have the skill. Yeah, also you're that you're that tall. We're going to see it. And Brunson's a shorter guy. So it's like the height and balance. It's a power balance. It's not fair. It's fucking annoying, dude. Brunson. Tough as nails. Where you see what the aviators on and the press conferences. And he's like, what's the thing? I mean, look at this shit. And it's like in the his parents are like his mom's sick three and his dad's sick seven, which feels like they did it on purpose, which is also annoying. Yeah, it feels like like, you know, you're trying to make the greatest, but like it's very eugenics. It feels like Hitler would have loved this shit. Yeah, Hitler would have been a wimpy fan, guys. Well, that's quite a push. I don't care for it. I don't care for it. Did you see what I saw one flip? What is this show become WFA? What are we doing here? I don't care for it. That's a tagline. I don't care for it. Well, that just the last thing I say was the coach went up to the referencing. What the hell are you doing? He goes, yeah, you're right. I know. I was like, what the hell? You just admitted it. I know. I've never seen that in the 60s brother. Tony Brothers is just as bad. Hopefully by the time this comes out, it's changed, but damn. That's crazy. But the city's a buzz. And I hate to say it. Nobody wants to hear this. And this is blasphemy to say this out loud. You're not going to like it. You're hung over. You're a fan. You're at the game, but I think the fact that they lost one adds a little more gas on the fire. Now the stakes are even higher. Now there's a tension in the air because before it was kind of like, oh, we might sweep this. Yeah. So now it's like, okay, trauma. Yeah, now ever again, you get to lose the next game in a swings a series. Now it next comes a must win. It's crazy. Exactly. So this, this adds a little more, it's like when you go down on a girl, you kiss the thigh a little. You don't want to go right for the clip. Same with this. I want the clip. It's maddening. It was a maddening. And that's always it. It was like, but no, violence. It's not a tax fan. It's fucking craziness. What are we doing? Well, the funny thing is the nicks got in fight with each other or the fans. Now you got to use this to bring to bring us up and bring us together. Yeah, here, here, I think Trump really fucked it all up. Love him or hate him. It was just it screwed up the the vibe. It was all joy before. Of course, it turned into the fucking, I've never seen security like that, dude. It was awful. Yeah, yeah, you couldn't, you couldn't have a watch party. So Monday had to move the watch party to the Bryant Park and then it changed everything. It screwed up the vibe. I was on the road watching all the videos of the fans like doing hilarious shit. What do they say? My god is black. My wife is gay. My Christian Dior. My man. My man. My man. My man Muslim. My bagel Jewish. My Christian Dior. Nixon for that was it. Now we got to change it to something else. Yeah, because of the next floor, but true. What are you going to do? Always our guests here. I guess so. You need a drink. How you feeling? Ah, I don't know. How about you? I mean, if the guests drink, I'll have a drink. Okay, okay. If not, I'll probably chill. I heard a fun fact about, oh, it's got to pee, about sleeping. Yeah. I got, I was slept like seven and a half hours, which when you have a kid is a miracle. Yeah. And I woke up and I feel so tired. I feel wiped and I looked it up and it said, you actually feel the way you feel from the night before. Sleep. Is that true? The day before. Hey, come on in. Come on in. Come in. Yeah. That's how we do it. You're talking right now. You jump right into the organ. You're recording right now? Yes, sir. This is happening right now. The front of your eyes. It's in the bathroom, so I'm not ready to go. No, you come right here and you get up. You get up. And he's done peeing, her pooping, whatever we're doing here. That's true. That's true. It could be doing a lie. I said pee and we're pooping. Hey, hi. Hi, nice to meet you. Great head of hair. Thank you. Very nice. Thank you. Oh, thanks. Really? Can you guys have just riddled with hair? Riddle. Hey, ladies. How are you? Hi, hi. What is this? This is our studio. You got to talk into the mic. You've done this before, right? Yeah. You guys are on the dock. Yeah, he's talking over there. I don't know what that is. He's Jewish. Yeah, we got a fun studio. If you want to drink, we got you ladies. If you need a cocktail or a water, we do want David to sit right there. Oh, shit. We spread it out. Let it up. All right, ready? Airplane mode. Please. Hey, man. Bam. That's it. All right. It's like Emerald Legassi, except with not food, but with just a phone. Bam. Yeah. Airplane mode. Doesn't work as well with the phone. Well, for you. Yeah. It's funny. The nicks are cooking. And then we have my friends in town for the Spielberg movie premiere. Yeah. So there's a lot of stuff going on. Hey, alien movie. Disclose your date. David, it's the right thing. Something like that. Yeah. Disclose your different movie. I'm going to chomp in this phone so I have to get rid of this gum. Oh, yeah. Throw in the ass tray, maybe. Is that real smell like so? Yeah, take a hit. It'll wake you up. I saw Josh Hart hit that. Don't put it too close to your nose, dude. It's strong. I'll fuck you up. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that'll do it. Yeah, I saw Josh. I was like, what the hell was that? That guy's got energy. Hey, David. What's up, Sam? Hey, Mark? Good. Thanks for popping in. We're on. Here we are. We slide right in. Oh, you got a garbage right here. Hey, you guys are a Ball energy. I like to slide right in when I'm talking Oh, I thought you were going to see the zip-zops out. You guys are in a band. Are you? Oh, Greece. Yeah, a couple of delves. I love that song. Yeah, you do a whole variety of songs from the past. All right, I'm very uncomfortable. It's uncomfortable. Wow. Why isn't it coming? You guys are grooving and vibing. It's uncomfortable for you. Yeah. Why? Well, you have too much fun. It's awkward. Is that a new shirt? Yeah, you still got the creases. Yeah. Oh my god. We're twins. Twinsies, two black shirts, how many? And you've got a black shirt. Hey, look at me. It's the opposite. I got a white shirt on. Yeah. Cornerway in the summer is Ball Z. Listen, I just needed a light pant with a dark cup. Wait, yeah, on the screen there, on the right, is my niece, Ali playing the violin. She in the hot 98 degrees in the L.A. She's wearing a sweater with a leather jacket over it. Yeah. And by the way, just speaking of Greece, Arthur Fanzarelli wore a leather jacket always, even skiing. Well, because he was cool. Exactly. The Mundo. Let me just say how much for this? How much that's yours? Let me just say something to you. Oh, you can vent. This this I walk in. I thought I was a guest. I thought this was a safe place. It's very safe. Right away, you're attacking me about wearing corduroy in the. I'm attacking. I'm observing. I want to say that I went into Buck Mason yesterday. Oh, quit bragging. Yeah. I have to. I have to tell you what happened. I say, can I wear corduroy? I asked two guys work in there. Can I wear corduroy? In the summer and the guy says, yeah, well, they're trying to make a sale. Yeah, I guess we asked for a corduroy. I guess it's good. A stripper if you're a track. Look Mason or no, they're known for lying. You done asked the wrong guy. Well, if you translate Buck Mason into English, it means both face liars, which I just found out today. Oh, I didn't know that. What is this? That's a soda water. Seltzer water. Oh, do you guys want to cocktail or something? No, you you play your cards right. You might be able to join the black T shirt mafia. Oh, these guys BTM. Now how long have you been drinking today? No, you have him, but he's hung over and hell you might be. Yeah, you're at the game. You know, why worry? Where are we? Where were you watching? Take two. I was at the game. No, you weren't. That was he was at the game. The second row. Fourth counts. Oh my gosh. They played like crap in the beginning. I don't know what was going on. Was it so loud that they couldn't hear each other? And that's why they were passing like it was loud. They were more nervous to me. They seem more nervous than the spurs in the beginning. Then they got the shit together. They always start. They start slow. They're like an old car. Yeah, that they're good. They haven't been starting not. They got to rev up. Just get their game going. Yeah, exactly. It's like a 40 roll. Anyway, that there's some crazy ass fouls happening. I know. Thank you. Like what are we doing? Oh, Julie Clausner. Hello anyway, another on with that. Nothing wrong with that. Oh, who's it? Like I've not lost. Oh, I thought that was like some sort of backhand. Like it's over now. Like no, no, I'm saying like quite a run of wins in a row. This is quite impressive. They've had so it's not over. Yeah, it's true. Well, they lost I mean quite a run they've had thus far. Yeah. Thank you. We got the dress implied I suppose. And I just didn't pick up on it. Yeah. I'm going to take this. Oh boy. It's going to be back at an improv camp. That's a lot of work. You don't have to improv. You just hang out. Just sit back and relax. Wow. I would like to be a part of it. I'm willing to wait. You're right. You're part of it right now. All right. Cool. Well, hey, welcome guys. Thanks for coming in. Where's the cold beer? Yeah underrated wrote night at the museum for Pete's sake rights novels Right novels rights plays plays has a house at Wisconsin on the lake. That's right. You guys wrote this movie, right? We wrote that's correct. Yeah, all right. We wrote it together in fact. Yeah, how was that? It's great. We've done it many times. We've written several movies together. What else you guys didn't do any research? Wow, we know about Molly Shannon's in it. No, she's not dammit. The daughter Molly Shannon's no. He was on a show with Molly. Oh, you go the other two. Yeah, we're playing on shooting end of July. You're Whiskey's great. Whoa. Thank you Dave. Appreciate it Do you guys have a hard time getting a movie made and like finance and stuff? Yes, it's crazy, right? This one took about 10 years Wow. Oh, look at that guy. You got a I think it's never sterling never easy. Thank you, sir You see me in the back with the facial hair I thought that was Joey for tone now. No looks like I'm no any got Bobby Lee. That's great. You guys write a movie like Sundance when you like when you write a movie like that like You got it was just you two no one else. Yeah, and when you kick it around like what's the like what's the How do you start going like that? We have this thing we do we get together for seven days We have no idea and then at the end of the seven days. We promise ourselves come out with the first draft Mm-hmm, and then we spend the next you know a number of years Honing it and rewriting it and we continue to do that until the movie gets financed and then we get's made and then we continue to do that in The edit editing process and then until we lock picture we're constantly rewriting But those first seven days we have a first draft Hmm To try to do it like a page count per day or just a day. I love it the first two days first day We break the idea second day. We outline the idea and then and then the third and then the last five days 20 pages a day. Do you go away somewhere? We usually don't we did look like we did at Ken's house. I feel like wanderlust was at my house the 10 was at your house No, I think that was in New York and then Yeah, what do I do? What do you guys do when you hit a wall when you're just like my work times? I break a knuckle like did that one time. Yeah, just like Mitchell Robinson. Oh Yeah, big Mitch think about like if you're doing like a maze right and you're trapped in a maze then you hit a wall You got to go right or left. Yeah, so you just zigzag. Yeah, try something new. Go back take a walk Well, you know the trick of getting through a maze, right? if you have all the time in the world. Just put your hand on one wall and then just never let go of that wall. Just slide your hand and follow until you get out. - I went to one of those mirror mazes at like a carnival or like a amusement park and got really lost. Could not get out. Same here. - Same street with the mirror ones. Just put your hand on one wall. - Nah, these are more fingerprints on the wall, but I'm in the mirror, but I'm dirty enough. - Can I ask a weird movie question? - No. - A weird movie question? - Yeah. - So this obsession and back rooms. You hear about this? - Yeah, I know. - Yes. - Oh, obsession, yeah, yeah. - The movie, they're changing the game. It's a couple of YouTube guys and they're saving theaters. They're making a hand over fist. They said obsession. This much hasn't been made in 40 years in a movie. - Yeah, 'cause it was made for under a million dollars and it's made $750,000. - Well, soon the conversation's gonna be this thing. It's obsession, back rooms and Gayle Dottry in the celebrity session. - Yeah, 'cause we made it for very little and it's apparently a million. - According for all the tabloids, it's gonna make like two to three billion dollars. - Holy shit. - Yeah, what? - I heard under two billion. - You heard under two billion? - Unbelievable. You were being conservative, but I think that once people get ahold of this movie, it's gonna make five to six billion dollars. - Did you guys see that opening week? - I loved obsession. - I just saw it two nights ago. - Yeah, I mean, I had some problems with it, but I thought it was good. - Okay. - It was good acting with the India, is her name? - The girl. - Yeah, unbelievable. - India. - She's going far, she's going places. - All right, all right. - Incredible. - Keep it in your pants. - But one of the guys that was such a bad actor took me out of it and I have found eight plot holes in the movie that bugged me, but really good movie and it's all worth amount. Did you more money in the third week than the first week? - I don't think it's about the plot. - Let me say this about that movie. It's not realistic, 'cause if you make a wish, - Well, that's not really gonna happen. - I accepted that part. You know what I don't like, though? I didn't see it, but my friend sent me a thing, like every horror movie has this thing now where you're hitting your head with a pan or you bang a lot of that. There's a lot of that. - Tom and Jerry, it was originally invented by Tom and Jerry. - For comedic effects, not to scare, but then there's another one with a head like coming towards like, I don't like go. I don't like, it's like all these drugs. - I can torture you? - No, I'm just kind of like, I've seen it a million times. - It's all put out. - I loved about obsession, is it, I think it consciously wasn't reinventing any wheel, it was just doing it really well and having a great time with it, you know? - I agree, I agree, I had a blast. - I'm gonna see it. - Sorting the theater, jump scares, everybody's freaking out. I looked around, everybody's doing this shit. It was fun to see, and I'm not a huge horror guy, but it was at moments of comedy in it too, a lot of comedy. - Funny. - Well, the guy who did it is a comedian, he's been, he was a, yeah. - Portlandia, apparently. He did a lot of funny stuff on Portlandia. - He comes back and watch Portlandia now, knowing that I've seen him. - Couriery. - Yeah, there he is. - Great guy. - 26. - He looks like Carrie Kenney's brother. - Yeah, got a little Daniel Sloss, too. - Look at those lips. - I know. - He's got a little lips. - I wouldn't mind kissing him. - Yeah. - All right. - All right. - All right. - I'm good. - But yeah, very fun, and it's cool to all word of mouth. It's all just people talking, and it just shows, if you make something fun, people will go see it. - Yeah, all that I thought was was in the radio business, and he, they had a saying, which is it's in the grooves, meaning you can promote, promote, promote, but ultimately it's gotta be in the groove. - Meaning, meaning. - You got the good. - The song's good. - Maybe, people gonna find time. - No, listen to that, that pop tune, baby. - Sing it. - Powerful. - I feel like party down was kind of like that. - Yeah. - That was like a word of mouth show. - I like it's a good segue. Thank you so much. I appreciate you. - Yeah, 'cause I definitely, that was a show. I had friends who were like, you gotta watch this show, and you know, look how many people are on that one. - I think a lot of stuff that we've both been associated with both together in part has had that thing. I'm like, not a ton of people saw it on a global scale, but the people who find it really spread it and feel loyal to it and feel ownership over it. - Oh yeah. - Wanna spread it around. - They saved my relationship during COVID. We ran, we watched everything on the earth and we're like, what's this party down? And then we fell in love with it. - We discovered it during COVID. - Yeah. - The party down actually ruined my relationship with COVID, that was weird. - We were on the rock. - You think it was the last push. - It was the last push. - Yeah. - Why, she didn't like it? - No, I was kidding. - Did you see all three seasons? - Yes, many times, a couple times. Yeah, we had to watch it over and over, so we didn't have to talk. We didn't see one of the episodes is directed by me. - Yeah. - The one with the play. - Yeah. - Where they do the play. - Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. - I fell off on that one. - Oh. - But good show all around. - That was terrific. - And what a cast. - Yeah. - Oh, don't get me started. - Jane Lynch's. - Do you ever look back on one of these movies and you're like, there's a couple, where you're like, I wish I did this differently. I don't, maybe one you don't like as much as others. - Do I look back on my career and look specifically at movies or just any acting choice that I've made? - Either, yeah. You know, some of them are to pay the bills and some of them are more than that. - Uh-huh. - Which one was to pay the bills? - I mean, it's pretty obvious. When you, like, you get an IMDB and you can go. That's what I would pay the bills and that one was because you, you know, he enjoyed it. - Oh, look there. (laughing) Those are all good ones. - You got a good one. These are good. - Thank you. - Oh, baby sitter is a fun horror movie. Fun comedy movie. - Oh yeah. - G directed, baby sitter and baby sitter too. Terrific director. I mean, a guy and I have known you. - He's bound. - I'll probably talk to you almost daily for the last 40 years. - Yeah. I've definitely not seen all this stuff. - Dawson's Creek, who are you on that? - I was Professor Joey. Professor Wilder, I was having an affair with Joey. - Hey. - I went to college. A lot of people thought I was a creepy professor. There I am. - That movie in a world is great. - I just saw that. Not too long. - There I am. Good looking guy. And then I would quote flow bear to her. (laughing) And then I can give you my first line of Dawson's Creek 'cause I still remember it. We shot it. I don't know. When was Dawson's Creek when that come out? It was the only line that stuck in my head. I'm terrible at lines. But you say some, I'm a lit professor. - Sure. - Okay. And I want you guys, you're one of my students. And you say something bad about Judy Bloom. Let's see if I remember it. - Judy Bloom, you know, it's kind of for kids, is it? - Hey, don't knock Judy Bloom without her. Hey, don't knock Judy Bloom without her. My younger self would never have been able to decode the random acts of madness perpetrated by that fascinating creature known as the Teenage Boy. - Girl. - That's great. - Thank you. That's what he's having. - I think that's fascinating. Random acts of madness perpetrated by the fascinating creature known as the Teenage Boy. And cut Ken, that was great, and we're gonna just, let's just do another one though, just, we got it. But we'll, let's try it again and get it. My younger self would never have been able to decode the random acts of madness perpetrated by that fascinating creature. - We got it. - Okay. - We're losing light. Sorry. - Oh, we'll just turn it on. - We're for a college professor to be teaching Judy Bloom. - A lit professor. - Okay. - Well, he wasn't. He was teaching, with one of the, somebody mentioned Judy Bloom and somebody like, "Dist, Judy Bloom," and he's like, "Hey, man." - Yeah. - And I think that's what got Joey Potter. - He looks, oh, he likes Judy Bloom, he's not just a- - He's not potentials. - Dude, he likes, he likes, he likes the girl novels of young teen novels. - So do you think about that? Do you remember Wifey? - You were the screen love of a woman who in real life married Tom Cruise, a.k.a. you are like Tom Cruise. - Yeah, I think about that all the time. I'm thinking about it right now. Mostly because you just said it. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. - I could see Tom Cruise now, fuck Brennan Frazier. - Ooh, I could see that. - You can see that? You can see Tom Cruise fucking Brennan Frazier? - Right in front of me. - I see it all the time whenever I go out. - I see when I close my eyes. - Whenever I go to the, to the, to the, the- - But that's, that's not a bad combo to look like. Tom Cruise and Brennan Frazier. I'm talking pre-wale. - Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, Oh my god, I was in I was also in a movie called Delirious though. Oh weird. Yeah, it's a little more of an independent movie Yeah, that's right. It was yeah Universal who is being celebrated at this try back a thumb festival for the 30th anniversary of the movie bound with oh my god Amazing Joe pantoleon he made his man. Yeah, it's like a far so much Great great movie watch bound. I will great great movie. That's one I keep telling my son You got to watch it and he's like yeah, yeah, I'll get around to it. I'm like you got to watch it. It's really good I feel like the 90s had so many of those like hidden awesome. Yeah, oh my god. There was a run of like lost like yeah simple plan. Yeah great movie It was a book that was really big movie came out who directed it? You had a severe tone this movie really great, but one of the one of the most I'm saying that like 10 scene in the middle with the gun and Incredible and then Billy Bob Thornton is unbelievable unbelievable do that monologue in the car Yeah, no, I feel like the 90s had these types of movies like another one's like Red Rock West. That's another sleep Yeah, I feel like it's kind of coming back now I feel like indie films are gonna have a research. I think so. What was the movie the indie film about making a movie with Steve Buschemi that was - Peter Dinklage's in it. - Peter Dinklage, yeah, it looks so great. - Yeah, living in a black place. - That's it, that's it, that's it, yeah, that's a good one. - I think it's the best movie about making a movie that there is. - Yeah. - But also-- - What about the Kevin Costner one? - Last time I looked up living in Oblivion, I wanted to show somebody, it's nowhere. - It's gone. - Really? - You can't stream it. - Give us some advice. This is really the first time we've made a movie together. - You're talking about the Tooby, yeah. What do you got? Anything we don't know what the hell we're doing. Well, I'll show you. - We'll be excited. - We'll be excited. It looks like Lagehuly right now. - Yeah, sure, you got money. We got money, believe it or not. - All right, you do the stars of it? - Yeah. - Yeah, unfortunately. - Who's directing? - And is that, is that for sure? - I don't know, is that for sure? - Yeah, unless you guys-- - I'm glad you could play me. - You could be in turn on the show, the state of the movie. - Oh, really? - Something like that. - Get your shine box, dude. - Wow, he's been around that long? - He was a little kid in the time. - Really? - Wow. - How old is he? - I know. - He looks young as fuck. - I thought he was 34 or so. - He might be. - Okay, yeah, there he is. How cute is he? - Yeah. Oh, I thought-- - Yes, or any advice you have, making a movie. - Oh, 30 bucks. - I would say, get there, you know, on time, in the morning. - Okay, tell, like, talk to all the crew and call them by their first name. - Okay. And this is any job so far. - Follow your mute, I don't know. - Come on, hold on, hold on. So you wrote the script? - Yeah. - Yes. - Do you feel good about the story? - Yeah. - Yes. - So you're ready to go? - It's a joke a second. - It's a lot like bound, but with two men. - Okay, so you're gonna shoot it? How long is the shoot? - I think, like, 18 to 20 days. - So it's a short shoot? - Yeah. - I just like that. - Yeah, running guys in 21 days. So you're running and gunning. Just make sure in pre-production that every, you know, whoever your first idea is, you really kind of take care of, like, where the locations are, make sure that that guy keeps the train running and then you go over, leading up to that, go over the script. So it's nice and tight and you believe in it and you know what it is and don't waver. Stick to what you believe is funny and shoot it in those 18 days and don't stop believing until you get to edit and then you're gonna edit it and you're gonna then rip it apart and try new things because sometimes she's not gonna work, but you're still gonna stay focused and you're gonna work through the moments where you're like, oh, this isn't exactly what we thought it was gonna be and you're gonna fix it and you're gonna still believe in it and you're gonna work hard on it and never give up and then until you lock picture and lock sound, you believe in that movie and then you put it out there and then you wash your hands or the whole goddamn thing and walk away. - But I would say, it's nothing's great advice. That was really well said, I think. But I would also say that you got 18 days to shoot a movie, spend every second you can between now and then trying to figure stuff out because when the clock's going, you're not gonna have much time. But now you have time to listen to it, read it out loud, rehearse, talk about it, break it down, think about what you might cut out and editing and don't shoot it like, you know, like try to make those decisions, think about those things now. - In pre-production. - Because when you get to set, there's no time. - There's no time. - So if you don't have time to talk about shit, you gotta shoot it. So pre-production is super important, do all your work, get it all, answer all your questions. - Have every decision made and so that when you get to set, if something changes you have an inspiration, great. But if you just stick to exactly your plan as you have it, you've got something. - When you're directing a movie like role models that's way bigger, what's the difference between that and one of these smaller movies? - Time, actually, there's obviously much more time and money, but - To riff and stuff, you mean? - Sort of, but ultimately it's less different than I thought it would be. It's basically the same idea. You're with your cameraman and your cast, and you're screwing, you're trying to just figure out what, okay, let's shoot this like this. The only difference is, yeah, if you want, you can just be like, okay, now let's keep rolling and try more things and you know, just keep going and going. - Yeah. - But sometimes I find that limitation is helpful, you know, to not just endlessly do things. - Just believe in the shit you wrote, okay, go over it, don't be like, we'll figure that out, we're on set, figure it out, figure out how you want it to look, talk about it with each other. - The tone and everything? - The tone, even visually, like what you're looking - Talk about it with your director and your DP. - Yeah, get your team be like, here's how I see it. Pull up references of other movies and be like, this is what I want it to look like. - And don't, and yeah, you don't want to get on set and you see what they've got set up and you're like, oh, that's not quite what I had in mind. - Yeah. - Now it's a little late to, like, here, you know. - Right. Make sure that the person who is running your production design, your wardrobe people, your DP and your AD, and you guys are all on the same page in terms of look, look, visual look. It's a visual medium. So everybody knows exactly what the movie is going to look like prior to showing up on day one, and you're all on the same page, because you don't want to have that fucking conversation. We're like, Dave, we're saying you walk on set, and you're like, this is not, no, no, the beer cans are supposed to be like super big, not regular sized, and they're like, you didn't say that and like and then all of a sudden you're scrambling to tiktiktiktiktiktiktiktiktiktiktiktiktiktiktiktiktikt We give other filmmakers, and we usually get 10% gross for it, for you, five. All right. All right. We'll get some money together. We'll put it all in the movie. You should see the points we've already had to give up on this shit. Yeah, true. The movie except for the five percent. All right. Okay. Who was helping you guys with this when you were starting, who's given you advice on making movies? Each other. Yeah. Our mentors a lot were each other because we were in this group of 11 of us that we met in college. And so we learned a lot from teaching each other stuff. But I didn't have a lot of -- You went to film school, and we went to a school where we learned how to act and produce and write. Oh, yeah. And then we were in a sketch comedy group where we, luckily, got our own TV show coming out of college, and we sort of felt like, as Dave was saying, we were thrown into the deep band and we just learned as it was happening. Damn. But pretty great. You got to show that quick. That's got to feel good. Very lucky. Very cool situation where MTV was a growing network. Yeah. We had an in there, and it would just like happen to fall into really good timing over there. No, you guys are very young. I'm so wondering. Do you even know what show we're talking about? The State. Okay. Nice to watch it. Yeah. I still remember the scene with the -- I didn't know about him. Oh, I was a big fan. All right. Since the mid-90s, we've been sort of coasting on that. That's what I was going to ask, like, you're behind the camera. Yeah. You're in front of the camera. When you get a show like party down, are you like, oh, thank God. I have a gig. I have a stable gig for a minute. And then when you're in a movie, you're like, hey, I got to do this movie. But then when you're doing the downtime, because we can just go hit the road, do stand up. You guys getting nervous? We used to go to my next job. We used to go to a tour a little bit. No, I don't do. I'm going to return with our band now. Oh, okay. You can do a tour with the state. The state did a tour. But you did a tour. Check it for one. No. No, like two years ago. Oh. You did like a… You did the Nokia thing. Buying Hubbers. My tour manager. So we said he worked with you guys. It was not a small number of shows, but they were big, they were big fun shows in big venue. We did the Nokia Theatre and Times Square. Nice. But we didn't do a lot of shows. We ended up not doing a lot of shows. And so the question is, do you get nervous or are you happy to get a show and then when it goes away? I can't see you. Can, yes, get nervous. Okay. After 40 years of working consistently, he's still never sure if he's going to have another job. Yeah. I don't do that as much. You're not nervous. I just sort of feel like, what can I do? Yeah, very Zen. I do go long periods without working though. Yeah, that's nerve wreck. And what do you do? The answer is you start a band. I start a band. There you go. Hang out what you had to do. You had to direct a play. Yeah, direct a play. I do. We always got projects of different types going. Most of them are not lucrative, but sometimes one… Soulful feeling. Works out. Yeah. But I would say I have, I personally have favored doing something that's creative and with the people that I want to work with, over something that's making money, and that's how it's worked out. Nice. I put my foot up in here, of course. I know this is nice piece of… You're nuts. That's nice. Oh yeah, that's like here. Is it the tape originally coming there, or is that… Yeah. We found on the sidewalk. So there you go. Hang on. Look at that. I thought it was four drawers, but it's just one. It looks like four. That's how they get you. Oh. Oh yeah. When you're like Eastbound and Down, when you get a giggle, I mean that must be awesome to get a giggle like that, especially when the show is already proven as being hilarious. Yes. But is it also stressful going in? You're like, "Fuck, this is such a good show." But they've got it there. They've got it there. I don't know. I mean, look, at the time, I was a huge fan of the show. Yeah. And I thought Danny McBride was like the funniest guy, and still do. The funniest guy around, right? Very funny. So I got an email or a phone call or an email from him being like, "Would you want to. " No, no. I put myself on tape. I went in an audition or I put myself on tape. Then I got a call from him. And he was like, "So we want you to do a thing, would you write it to a jet pack?" And I was like, "Yeah, of course." And then that was the only thing that he said to me and I was like, "Yeah, I'll fucking do a jet pack over there." And then was I nervous? I don't know. I wanted to do right by those guys, Jody and Danny, and so I tried to do the best I could. I came and prepared, and I tried to create some sort of character that they lean into the character that they created. It was a really good one. It was a fun one. It was a good part. It was a great part. You killed it. I feel like that show didn't really strike a false note ever. Some people should on season two, but I love season two. I think it's like. Season two is. Mexico. Mexico, yes. No, they're all good. I will say personally, I think one is the best, and I think my season is. I think it's probably number two for me. I'm on the great show by the way, Breaking Bad. Sure. I'm on the great show. No, I'm saying it's a great show. No, it's a great show. You were great on the show. No, I'm not in that ear. No, you were a great show. You fucking killed it. Yeah. You were good. Soprano's a good show. Oh, my God. We just listened to good shows. Yeah. Great show. Yeah. Honeymooners. And up ahead. All about domestic abuse. Yeah. And we still loved it. No. To the moon. What about it? It's fucking far, dude. It's far, dude. You guys don't forget about plays. Like King Lear. Oh, shit. You guys completely forgot about that. Also, commercials like people shit on commercials, but some of them are really funny. Yeah, where is the beef? Like meat and green throwing that, I'm crying throwing the jersey. Yeah. I'm just being in the front row. Hey, kid. Can I ring? No, catch. The was up commercial. Ah. Those are bangers. You know. So when you hit it, you hit it. You guys, you're forgetting about all the promos. Like, hey, up next. It's the NBA. Yeah. No. Let's not forget about just music in general. Oh, my God. You got the Rolling Stones. Whoa. God, what a miss. Yeah. British invasion. Oh. Titanic. Hey, don't forget bud. Flat duo. Jazz. Or. Thank you. Classic. Do you guys do that kind of thing on the road? We do a lot of commercial talk. Yeah. We try to incorporate the audience. Do you open up with the, do you guys, you, so you do, you do a, um, a two-man show? No. No. No, you do. You separately. Of course, stand up. And so who, uh, when you go out and do shows, right? And do you, are you ever built in the same, like night? Yeah. And club in New York will. Yeah. Like probably some show up in the same show. And like, like if one guy opens early, you know, for the other guy, do you, like, rip him about it? Like I open for you. I bet you anything. And tell me if I'm wrong. I may be wrong. Do you ever do a show, like a stand-up show, some city, some town, you're going to show? Yeah. And then somebody out of a town. And then someone, does anybody in the audience, have they heard you on this, on this podcast? Not usually. No. I've never. No, okay. They're like, we know you from IMS. That's what we usually get. Yeah. Yeah. IMS. We were big on IMS. Yeah. Morning 66 W and V.C. Is that what it was? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I was, I was more into, um, 10, 10 wins. Yeah, yeah. Ah, yes. What about cars for kids? Oh. Great, too. Please don't come and start. You're going to give it to me. Um. One eight hundred. I mean, so cars for kids. Yeah, yeah. I think you guys are going to be a scam. Yeah. By origin, by the way. Yeah. More part. Uh, Manhattan originally. Where? Uh, originally Chelsea, then Upper East Side. How about that? How about you? Oh, you're New Yorker. New Yorker. Yeah. Yeah. Maybe. Where are you guys? I'm from Cleveland, Ohio, but I lived in Manhattan for 26 years. I grew up in Long Island and then lived in Manhattan for, uh, from college until I was 30. Hey, the 90s. Yes, sir. Was it, uh, all they say it was? And more? The hookers. The hookers and blow were great. Yeah. The time square, the porno. I mean, that was there. It was changing. It was changing right when we got here. We got here. Okay. That was all not disnified. Disnified. It was just starting. And it was startling for, uh, you know, uh, you know, 18 year old teenage, uh, suburban boy. Yeah. It was startling and then they changed what's starting. Got it. So you got the little of both. Yeah, it's wordplay. Yeah. I got here at 0708. And I remember you getting here. I didn't, I didn't make a splash really. But I got mug free times. Oh, yeah. And I remember the East Village was still had that heroin. Yeah. You know, you know, you at Mars bar and, uh, all those old pieces. Seven eight seven eight. Pumpkin square. Right. It was cool. Yeah. The rats are still out tonight and the two boots on. That's right. I worked. Oh, yeah. I ate there many times. I think they're just close. Too much to go. They just close. Close the super burgers closing this month. I saw that. Wait. The boots is closed on everywhere. On Avenue. Yeah. On Avenue. No. The super burgers closing. That's a brutal one. That one hurts. We're thinking about going to lunch there tomorrow for the last time. Classic. That's a great idea. I might do the same. I'm probably going to get the cheeseburger deluxe with fries. Dude. Usually what I get is cheeseburger, what I got when we went to colleges. Cheeseburger deluxe with fries and put some gravy on those fries. Oh, yeah. What about the split pea soup? That's what I get. Yeah. They're a super burger. Love that fucking soup, dude. What about the moh pitkins? Remember that place? Oh, that was a great bar. I saw Jimmy Fallon there once. What about your own bistro? Still there, that's a great area. Yeah, that's my favorite memories corner bistro was during the great blackout in 2003 Every whole city was shut down. They had the gas grill going Ever got mugged in this town. I got a gentleman mug Which was I came up I went up town to meet my girlfriend at the time's father at a museum and we got I got out of the subway And I was sort of dressed I tried to dress nicer, you know I put on the nicest jacket I had on the long coat and I was like sort of like the fall and and I went and I saw a guy Clock me as I got out of the subway and I'm walking up the thing and I could seem following me and I got a little nervous because I was New to the city was like, you know first couple of years I was there and I got out and I made a wrong turn and go to a busy street I walked on the side street and he walked up to me and he goes hey, hey, and I turn around and he goes He goes hey, man, and I go hey, hey, and he grabbed my hand and shaking my hand. He goes how much money do you have? You know, I don't know what I don't know because once you take out your wallet tell me how much money you have And give it to me and I was like, okay, you did it? Yeah, I was scared shitless and so then I took out my wallet And I gave him my money and he goes thank you and then he left General gentleman mugging was he a scary looking guy? Yeah, okay, I was like I can't believe that was no I was petrified you think you had it was a big man you had the backup. Yeah, he had big hands acidic When he grabbed my hand, I was like oh he can crush me. Oh So do you think he just looks like I'm gonna go out in half an hour and get a few thousand bucks? Look here. Yeah, he's like, well, and there's no 15 shit at this guy. I'll just take his money. That feels like an impractical joke I'll go up to somebody like your size. That's it. Yeah, you're not a little man I mean, I was the same height, but I was like 20 pounds lighter. I was a teenager. I mean, I was okay Okay, now you don't know who knows Emma May though that guy could just shake a guy's hand and just get the chicag that of him Yeah, maybe wow, but sure I think the risk I guess if you need the money. I get it scared But you I think you get a walk away from that. I had a guy come up to you once Maybe I would have now I would have yeah, I would have just been like yeah, yeah, sure and then there's Ram but I know where I was uptown So I could have ran, you know, I could have been running in the wrong. No way to tell the girl and the dad that happened Or do you keep it? I think so I think I was like I think I just kind of mugged how much money I Didn't have a lot of money at the time. It's you know, maybe it was like 60 bucks 60 fuck a time. That's like five mil But also that's you can't really mug anymore. You just have to make them go to like a ATM or something good point That is the that is true. There's a it's a Venmo a mugger. I had a hobo with Venmo recently electronic Yeah, yeah, I had a guy come up to me. I was eating with my wife and this guy came up with his kid He's like we need some money. I was like, yeah, we're good. We're good. He goes you got any cat. I was like I have no cash He goes I take Venmo and I went fuck so I had to Venmo hit a little placard with his with his handle on it. Jesus. He got me So he's got a phone. Yeah, hobos have phones. I can report that to Venmo Think about that. Did you I mean I see you're thinking about it now. What about you pull that back context clues chin rub Yeah, that'll do it and then also he's a good actor vocally. You're going He's a good actor. You should make a movie in July. That's planned stand through all the prep work before you start Yeah, let him have fun. Thank you. Appreciate that hold on. I had a thing about the bugging. Oh, yeah I had a guy come up to me in the village and he goes run your pockets. That's what he kept saying Yeah, run your pockets. He was completely shithouse. He was like run your pocket Uh, and I was like oh good and then it hit me like wait. This is just a guy He's trashed and I went nah, I just kept walking and he was like all right So it just goes to show you like what the next guy it's scary at first But then when they win it all hits you like this is reality I learned yeah, yeah, I'm not giving you shit Reason to bail he will you just have to also you just have to read the situation if someone's giving you a bad vibe You just got to walk away. Yeah, I was on the train with the outside Steve from the car We're on the train. There's a crazy guy fucking with people and he's like he just fucked with them back and I was like What are you doing? That's crazy. We're gonna get fucking kid like that's you go to the other car. Yeah, there's no no upside to that Yeah, what are you gonna change the guys mine? It was fun. It was fun. I now get to experience your insides like basically you Fart it. Yes that odor and the little particles from that odor of floating in the air I'm inhaling it. It's going into me now. I don't like this and so to you I say Thank you. He delivered that like Neil deGrasse Tyson too. Yeah, that was beautiful. Thank you, but I I would argue if we're in a sim I'll tell you that okay, like the Neil deGrasse is in of podcasts of farting I would argue I have the boxer and pantaloon filter going Oh, so you filled your bit but you're not getting coffee grinds in the coffee isn't like this it but but this isn't that They're not like those masks that we wore during covid. Well, I make them out of the old masks that I'd ever use during covid Oh, yes gas molecules pass directly through your pants, which is why you can smell the fart Essentially acts as an older filter. Thank you, filter. You're worried about the gems are solid matter clothing serves as an effective shield Research shows that unaffected flatulence can produce microscopic particles outward wearing clothing completely blocks the particles from escaping Well, all right, thank you for filtering your thoughts. You're welcome. Not wait until we move on to the next thing whatever it is Oh, I don't know where this is the second half of the pod Let's get back to gill dodging the celebrity sex past the reason we're here guys will mix it up But we usually talk about marks asked at this point. Oh, yeah, I met her at a Birch and Shaq show in L.A She's really cool. How'd that work out? I didn't do great. What happened? It was forced a it was a crowd work show L.A Yeah, no, I think just it is so it's hard to do crowd work, crowd work, crowd work every comic It's like you want to throw a joke in but it was tough. Yeah, I got a few things on Shaq. There you go. It's cool to meet Shaq Yeah, sure his hand is talking about a fucking handshake. Yeah, he mugged you till he get any money from no money But he could have broken my fucking hands. I said he's Shaq you do that everywhere. Yeah. Yeah, that's true Yeah, yeah, thank you so much Oh, no, well, that's what happened to guy. No, he didn't grab my hand in the beginning. He goes how much money he got? And I'm standing there I'm shaking and he goes and I take it out and he goes give it to me in a handshake That's what it was and so I gave him my 60 bucks in a handshake So it doesn't look like a mug in a few years. Yeah, and I gave it to him a handshake and he takes it and then he left I hate this guy. I'm furious about this. I hope you think I like it. I hope he's spent on something good because that's really obnoxious What he did I agree? I'd better than the mugging that like Tom Lenning got when I would him he got punched in the face And he had a black guy and like a like a like Tom Lenning's been mug like a multiple days. Yeah, he got mug like multiple times I think he said John Lenning for a second. I was like, well, I heard it was worse Yeah, I was worse for John. No, but I had a guy when I was on night too soon once he had one of those big machetes And he sliced my head off. Oh, you had your head clean cut off by a machete It's a very sharp machete when you were mug somebody cut your head off with a machete Give me your money. I'm like before I could think he's like Jesus Christ Can we get back to the fart stuff then yeah, yeah, that's a little That's scary to me yikes. Don't don't I know? Scary. Yeah, by the way, I'm gonna let you all three of you off the hook now all right. I didn't happen Because I'm trying to figure out how this guy I let his head cut off in a mugging garden path, but here he is No, I was scary other than that is crazy fictional story guys. Okay Just curious How much my American summer like that must have felt so good because it's clearly not a huge budget We just made a funny movie and it became this hit huge hit cult class. We made it. We hit profit this year So was it was it not a success? I mean, it just it felt like a success when it came out I made very little money likely no more than a few hundred dollars in minimum or scale Nothing at all on the original way to house Americans out of the nest in our movie How do you know that that is true, but how does it know that it's a high? It's taking a educated guess every time Well zero box. How many days of that take to shoot what how to American summer well three no that took about 28 days But you have to understand 35 millimeter one camera Prime lenses like guys you must understand which means all three of those things made it go a thousand times slower than it would How many cameras you shooting with? We got to figure that out five Probably two and then sometimes three that's what I almost said one. Who's your DP you got anybody? I don't think we have anyone yet. Yeah, Robert Blake, is this the case? - And he was in the original. What's the Capote book, the famous Capote book? - In Cold Blood? - Yeah, he was in that movie. - As a murder. - That's right. - Oh. - That's right. - Yeah, dude. - I didn't know, that's all full-circ. That'd be awesome. - Oh, man. - Jesus, that's a long name. - I hope so, too. Yeah, it's a very long title, but that's, you know. - It's part of the fun. - That's part of the fun. - What other shows are you going on to promote? - Well, Johnny Carson, of course. - Nice. - Yeah. - It's hard to get on. - Apparently Johnny's not gonna be there. Would it sound it like you just said? It looks obida, obida. (laughing) - Yeah, that's what I'm saying. And all of a sudden, is that a catchphrase for the shit? - Obida, obida. - Obida, obida. - That's what I say. - Obida, obida, obida, obida. - In all sincerity being objective, it is really one of the funniest movies ever made. - Wow, okay. That's a hell of a blur. - Is it really hard editing these things? Like, is there so much stuff you wanna keep that you're just like, fuck, we gotta just, because you wanna keep a comedy pretty tight, right? - We're keeping it 90, 93 minutes. - That's gay, that's smart. - Yeah. - But it's hard, right? - But there's a lot of stuff you want. - It's hard, you gotta take a bite of some of your babies. Let it go, let it go, let it go for the whole. - A bort. - Yeah, do you know the expression? Let it go, let it go, go for the whole. (laughs) - That's just so nice. - Ow, it's so good. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. How funny is that ham, huh? Hands of it. - He's good. - He's good. - Yeah, he's got it all. - Yeah, I mean, the way you're saying it, you interested? I mean, do you wanna, I can introduce you, I suppose. - I mean, I wouldn't kick him out of the bed. - He's married. - He's married? - Yes. - What's he thinking? - He's gonna be clever enough. - He's clever enough. - I mean, he has a wonderful wife. - What do you mean? - What do you mean? - Wow, let's go, I can be here. - Are you married? - Yeah. - But I'm not ham. - Yeah. - I'm, I'm deli meat. - Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. - Nice, John, he's like this. - I am not Mary Dana, a skeola. - No, John Ham is. - I know, that's why I'm not. - Yeah. - Anna, a skeola is one of the best makers of cake. Like she bakes cake. - What kind of cake are we talking? - Any kind. - Fruit? - Yeah. - Okay, how about Spon, tomato cake? - No, that's not a cake. Come on, where'd you go to improve? - It's a good cake. - I never heard of tomato cake. It is a fruit technically. - It was. - He's playing, he's playing the game fair. - I bet there is such a thing as tomato cake. Would you mind looking it up? - Oh my god. - Oh, geez, this is gonna be some bullshit. - There you go. Thank you. - It's a frittata. - It's not a cake. - That's clearly a frittata. You got this podcast feels like me sitting at home trying to write. - Yeah. - Surprisingly delicious moist dessert that tastes remarkably like spice carrot cake or gingerbread cake. Thank you. - I wish I had some. - I'd like to try it now, actually. - Do you make cake at anything? - Oh yeah. - I mean, a fruit? - Yeah. - Sablish that. - Yeah. - Tomato, of course. Who's been on this show that comes to mind just the first thing I was really the most exciting? - Yes. - Who are people going to? What's got the most hits? - So I thought it was pretty cool. - That was a pretty cool episode. - Yeah. - Do you want to hear my cypher? - Yeah. - What's the deal with crackers? - That's great. - Ooh. - That was awesome. - Burr was big. - That was fun. - Oh, you want to hear my Bill Burr? - Yeah. - Hey, Boston, what's your deal? Why are you guys being so shitty right now? - Hey. - Okay. - Christopher Walken, that was a good one. - Yeah. - Okay. - Sure. - I'm Christopher Walken. - No. - Can we have Paul Gianmatti? - Same, same, same. - No, okay. - Let's move this message. - Oh, that's nice. - All right. Good. So you got Gianmatti on here? - No, no. We're just trying to show him. - You got Christopher Walken? - No. - You was setting you up to do. - We did have cyintails. - Questions. - How was cyintails? - Oh, you're saying great. - Great, great. - Come on, what was the moment that cyinfeld gave you that, even when you think about now? - Guys, it gives you the goosebumps, the chills. What is it? - I mean, it was sincerely great. That is, you're making a mockery. - It was awesome with it. - He's making a mockery. I'm, I'm not making a mockery. - Yeah, I'm making a mockery. I'm asking you, what did you, I was making a joke of how I asked a question, but what was the, we go deep into comedy nerd joke writing. And it was really, - Yeah, just like that. - And like, we love that stuff. - So let me ask you something, let's do joke writing. When did you get into comedy? - We both follow around 20 years now. - Yeah. 20 years ago. - What made you do it? - I always loved it. - I was a waiter, then I moved furniture, then I did construction, then I shit like that, but I moved up here. I'm from New Orleans, there's no comedy there. So I had to come up here to try to be a comedian. - From New Orleans, I love New Orleans. - Hey, great town, great town. Most original, not original, but unique city in America, I say. - Without question. - I'm one of the best, I love New Orleans. - Great food, some of the best in the world. - Very good. I miss it, you can't get it here, which is weird, you can get Ethiopian food. But I can't get Creole. - Yeah, you can find it in a couple of minutes. - It's not the same. - I've looked around, that may with love. - Who's like a person you guys have worked with who you were like, holy shit, this is pretty crazy. - Henry Winkler comes to me. - Whoa. - Alan Aldo on A. - Hey. - Come on. - That's pretty cool. - Anytime you work with somebody that you watched growing up and they were like, oh my God, I'm watching, you know, match, or happy days, or like, taxi, like, you know, a Lane Nardo up, Mary Lou Henner. - Sure. - Yeah, like, she was on party down, if you remember. - Yes. - At Begley, Jr. Like, all these people that he grew up watching and then all of a sudden, they're in scenes with you for you're directing them in something. - It's pretty amazing. - It's mind-boggling. - It's a weird fuck. Mind-fuck. - Looks amazing, by the way. - Yeah? - Who's that? - Ernie Hudson. - Oh, yeah. - Crazy, crazy. - I was shooting a pilot that all the characters in it were older people, it was like about old people. And so, like, the entire cast of Barney Miller came to audition, and the entire cast of the love boat came to audition. And I was just like, this is a-- - That's crazy. - Wow, that's insane. - Oh, I just, I shot a Christmas movie with Eddie Murphy. - Whoa! - I'm walking to the middle of the first-- - Whoa! - Come on, movie. I walk into the middle of the street, Eddie Murphy. You all right? - Sorry. - Eddie Murphy. - I got excited about it. - Before it again. Eddie Murphy walks out of his house. I walk into my house and we meet in the middle of the street and we have a scene with Eddie Murphy. - Yeah, see that's legendary. That's incredible. - Was he cool? - Yes, he was cool. Like, you know, you hear like he's to himself, and he was to himself because he's Eddie Murphy, right? He's got nothing to prove. And he just, he's kind of, he's like, but he was like, super nice, you know, when we got into conversations, he would like, just talk about stuff. Like, he was a really cool guy. - What do you want me to talk about with Eddie Murphy? Well, once I got to, like, 'cause he would show up shoot a scene in the lead, right? So, but there were times we had a, I had a son. So the, in the movie, and so sometimes, because of time, you know, the kid, we had to let the kid out in 20 minutes, Eddie Murphy couldn't leave. And so we were just standing on set, waiting to reset, you know, the cameras or whatever, and we got into some conversations. And we talked about who his favorite director was, just like, growing up on Long Island. - Whoa. - Yeah, it was cool. - Who's he love? - What's that? His favorite director was who did training places. - Landis? - Yeah. - I thought they hated each other. - He does Landis was like one of the, you know, greats, like Steven Spielberg and Scorsese, all those guys coming out of there and he goes, he doesn't get his, his, his, his, his due. - He had a run in the 80s. - He really just never came back though. - Yeah, it's true. - Well, that, Landis, we talked to Landis when we were trying to make a wet-hot American summer and he was going to help us produce it, put his name on it, help us find money for it. And it sort of felt fizzled away and that was the end of it. - Wait, what did you say? So after what? What happened? - He had an incident. - Well, he had an incident because of the helicopter, because of the creep show. - Is that me? - No, because Twilight Zone was. - Twilight Zone. - No, but this, this was, this was all after that. This was in 2000. - Oh, okay. - I think wet-hot American summer. And he just, he was trying to connect us with some finance or whatever and it just never really happened. And so. - All right, I think we got a wrap up. Sorry, we're getting there. We're getting the signal. - Well, no, I got like a 10, I got like 10 more hours of stuff that I wanted to talk to you about. - Oh, okay. - June 26th, Mark Ridley's comedy castle. - No, no, go see Gail Dottry and the celebrity sex pass. Crazy cast, it's in the theater. It's gonna be hilarious. He said it's the best comedy ever. - Mark and I are gonna go see it in the theater. - We will go see it. - It is Steve. - If you're in, if you're on the East Coast in July, check out the Middle-Age Dad Jamman. We'll be on tour. - That's right. - That's me and Ken. I'm the drummer, he's the lead singer. - In the Middle East. - We're doing, we're doing Rehobus.
