Kelly Schweida - Grafterburners is Ready to Win in Sydney

Kelly Schweida joined the show to discuss Graf de Berne ahead of Saturday's Premier Stakes. The trainer said the horse is thriving, with good blood results and a pleasing recent run in which he was beaten just 1.7 lengths after being hampered at the 600m and losing momentum at the 300m before running out of room late. Graf de Berne has drawn barrier 8 for the Premier, with Adam Hyeronimus aboard, and is priced around $40, making him a solid each-way proposition. While connections would love an Everest slot, the Sydney Stakes remains the immediate goal, though no jockey has been booked yet, with Jason Collett unavailable. Schweida also flagged the Galaxy next year as a target for a Group One, and noted Queensland's $28 million summer carnival as another option. The rest of the stable is quiet, with First Mission again drawing badly in Brisbane. Schweida, a Broncos fan, tipped the Knights over the Chooks and signed off hoping Graf de Berne can land the chocolates on the weekend.

Speaker 1Morning, Kelly. Grafterburners, how is he?
Speaker 2Yeah, he's good, mate. Did Kevin Lening be Roy Gunson in that race?
Speaker 1I was just Googling that. I think he did. I think he did. But I was going the old Google in 71. He was the pride, wasn't he, up north?
Speaker 2Yeah, the Goondi-Windi Grey.
Speaker 1Your bloke, like his massive odds. Yeah. But, jeez, I tell you what, he didn't run too bad last start at all.
Speaker 2Yeah, he ran good. He got beat 1.7. And he was travelling, Jason, said about the 600. He just got a little bit of a trim up from 1 and just put him off stride for a little while. And then about the 300, he hit a bit of a flat spot. And Jason, I give him a smack, and he said, I think feeling's starting to build. And then just run out of the room the last 100 metres. So he sort of got untested. But he ran good, I thought.
Speaker 1You happy with where you've drawn and how it's going to unfold Saturday?
Speaker 2Yeah, I'd be happy if a lot of them other horses weren't in it. I'd be tempted and so, but it just keeps getting stronger and stronger. But anyway, he's good. He looks good. His blood's good. I'm very happy with him.
Speaker 1All right, so the plan is obviously to try it. I mean, you'd love to get him in the Everest, wouldn't you?
Speaker 2Yeah, I suppose if everyone wants one in there. But the Sydney Stakes is probably his goal for a while now. So it's a good prize, isn't it?
Speaker 1It certainly is. Jason Collett unavailable this time. So you've got Hippo on board.
Speaker 2Yeah, he's rode him twice. He rode him as a two-year-old, I think, when he ran fourth and a good race down there, or fifth or something.
Speaker 1I know you want to get to the Sydney Stakes, but have you got anything in the locker in terms of how you're building his prep to maybe even get down to Melbourne afterwards?
Speaker 2Yeah, probably not. I don't know whether there's a lot on for him after this, for him down there, but there's plenty of races around. I'd love to get back to the Galaxy next year, try and get a group one under his belt. And so there's plenty of races. There are races everywhere for him, really.
Speaker 1And I did see an announcement as well. $28 million in prize money for Queensland over that summer carnival. So is there even something there you could lobby him in over summer, possibly?
Speaker 2Yeah, there's some good races on for him. He won a couple of good races over summer last year. As I say, nowadays there's a race every day of the week somewhere for him.
Speaker 1How's the rest of the team going, Kelly? You've got, obviously, Graf de Berne is in the premier on Saturday. Do you reckon you'll have a winner in Brisbane on Saturday?
Speaker 2Yeah, I don't know. I mean, first mission's going well. He drew bad in the last three. Doesn't mean I'll get at him. He's drawn bad again on Saturday, 10 alley. So speak to Ronnie and Judy, but Ronnie doesn't like running from bad alleys, neither do I. So, yeah, not over strong in Brisbane. Yeah, quiet at the moment. A lot of babies in and out.
Speaker 1And with the Sydney Stakes, does Jason jump back on? Have you got already a booking there, or is it Hippo's right?
Speaker 2No, I haven't booked anyone for that yet. Yeah, OK. I would just play it by ear. Yeah, play it by ear, I think.
Speaker 1Should we have a bet on the weekend? I mean, he's big odds, but you can't have him any better, it sounds like.
Speaker 2Yeah, no, he's good. Like, I mean, he's $40, so he's sort of $7 a place or something. So I think he's good each way, don't you?
Speaker 1We'll have something on. I'm sure there'll be plenty of Queenslanders backing him, mate. Graf de Berne is on the weekend. Have you got a tip in the footy?
Speaker 2I'm a Broncos fan, unfortunately.
Speaker 1Who would you prefer, the Chooks or Knights?
Speaker 2Probably the Knights, I think.
Speaker 1Yeah, right. They've
Speaker 2done a good job from Wooden Spooners up here.
Speaker 1Have they what? Have they what? Mate, enjoy your weekend. Hopefully Graf de Berne can get the chocolates or maybe even one of those horses at Eagle Farm. It's great to hear that he's going well and bring on the Sydney Stakes. Thanks, mate. There we go. There's Kelly Schweder this morning. So Graf de Berne goes around this weekend in the Premier. Big odds. It's a great race, as expected, with Marzu, Cabalas, Headwall, Ninja, King of Sparta, King of Rousseau, et cetera. He draws Gate 8 Graf de Berne. Adam Hieronymus on board, and his run wasn't too bad last start.
