What does it feel like putting a film out like this? What does it mean to you to be a part of a project like this? I mean, I grew up on romcoms. Right. Failing love with all of them and all of their styles and all of their uniqueness and all of the backgrounds of who they were, whether it was a romcom that I didn't see in my face. It was just white faces, a romcom where it was black and Latino faces. But now you see this new world where there's black faces and Latino faces and white faces. It's what the world looks like. And so I was just really excited about that. And I take a lot of delight in that. And I love the story. I fell in love with the script as soon as I read it. Like all these characters just kept jumping out at the page. Off of the page and I was like, "Oh, this was me at 20." Yep. Oh, I remember this one. You know what I mean? Like, just feeling all of that. Had you read the book before you got the script or you read it after? With somebody like a couple of my friends told me about this particular book. A lot of people lost their minds over this book. I have a friend Janice who was like, "I'm just gonna tell you right now." This book? I am dating with intention. I know what purpose and intention is true. And what I love about Pastor Michael Todd in particular, of course, the writer of the book. Yeah. I like that he preaches from an authentic human place. Yes. Like, you know what I mean? Like, he is so transparent with his experiences and his experience with marriage and relationships and this and that. And it's just, he can't help but to be honest. Yes. So when it came time for this to take place when I talked to Devon Frank from the producer of this film, you know, he felt the same way. So the fact that their synergy met and they made this film. And everybody that's attached to it just kind of feels like that. Like, the set? Every day was amazing. Which you know, they're not always happy. It does not. It does not. It does not. It does not. It does not. We can't wait to get up out of here. They are on my nerves today. It does seem like this cast jailed so well. Yeah. You are so damn good in it. Thank you. You are so funny. I think you're gonna surprise people. Thank you. I knew just the way I wanted her energy in the space. And when I read with Annie, I knew Annie was treason. Yeah, she is. But I knew that Robin needed to be in the space. And when it came time for us to like read in depth with all of the roles together, we literally started bouncing off of each other. I'm gonna tell you when she's looking at her man in the in the bed and she said so until then, I'm gonna have to take that off the table. Yes. I said, "Oh, you better let them know." I know. You better let them know. I know. And when we're at the, it's the three of us at the table. And I'm talking to them about Jared Roy. Like in the comedy spaces, Robin would be like Travis. Oh, really? Oh my gosh. She was like a cheat sheet. Come on. She was like amazing having her around and her and Annie. So we were like dancing. Yeah. But I mean, I think that for a lot of people, she blew up off of Black Lady. Yes, she was. She was like a show on HBO, but she had been doing writing and stand up for it. She was brilliant writer. Brilliant. Tell me what was the hardest scene for you to film? The hardest scene for me to film, probably trying to keep a straight face when Cliff is singing in the car. Oh my gosh. The Method Man in the car, karaoke is great. How wonderful is he in this film? It's great. He's charming and funny and-- 10 minutes in. I was like, I think I've ever heard Method Man talk like this. I was like, this is-- You know, you on the phone. You got to make a phone call. You got to call the bank. That was the hardest because it was trying to keep a straight face and be mad at him. And I could-- You were like this. This though sounds crazy right now. It was so fun. Okay, so we've got some situations. Okay. And I don't want them not trying to be fun. not trying to put your relationship, you know, on blasts or nothing like that. But you happen to have a wonderfully beautiful life. - Oh. - And I think what people see you, especially with your beautiful family, people are like, "That's goals." - Oh. - "That's goals." Five minutes, they lasted. - Hey, you can't even think about that in the house right now with Tim. Before I started the movie, I was in the studio with one of my favorite producers, Jack Dine, and Jesse Reyes, and I started writing this song. And so it's called Complicated, and I was thinking about Leah, my character, and the whole dynamic, and subconsciously, we wrote this song, like, just, and it just flowed out. And it worked. And sent it to Amazon, and they were like, "Yeah, we want this for the movie." So there's a song that's gonna be attached to the movie. That's coming out, that's been like, you know, an original I haven't put out an original in a very long time. So let's just start. - When love takes over. - I know. And she was like, you know, everybody's, you know, running towards the TikTok. - What's going on playing on TikTok? - It's gonna pop on TikTok. - And I was like, "Yeah, they are running the TikTok." - Songs are two minutes long at max. - I was thinking like that for a second. - Really? - Yeah, yeah. Because I mean, that's some people get into it. That's when it gets traction. You're thinking about it from that. - Social media is the new radio in a lot of ways. - Exactly. And so I thought about it like that. And then she said, but then I was thinking like, who makes music for me? Like, talking about the things I wanna talk about, telling the stories I wanna tell. And it happened just in time that I saw her say that. And I went to the studio and we tried something new. And one of the things that we tried, it wasn't. - So we got a 17-minute song. - Maybe seven, but I said 17. - Yeah, I'll take seven. - Oh, I could be satiating on a seven-minute song. - So you get the right groove. - Yeah. - It never happened. - Absolutely. - I say brothers have it. - Marvin Gaye. - Marvin Gaye. - You know what I mean? And our later this is where it takes like about mountain like inside of like I was like we're supposed to be there by now we're like three minutes away from where we're supposed to be. It's dirt and a whole mountain on the outside of me. I said oh no no no no. That's not okay. No. And so all I could think was I'm woman. I'm scared. Get out. We'll roll down one of these now and people going to have to get there. Like not in the hill. I could show you how to get there. I get this. I was at 10% power on my car. And I wanted to just really just showcase, like, the beauty of our skin tones. And when I looked at it, I remember even looking at it in the show 'cause we put it in the show when I did the tour with Brandi and Monica. And when I looked back at it, it just really. I was so happy that every woman could look up there and see herself and just be identified and feel beautiful and. -I know Maj. -Yes. -Really, I got to say, it's one of my favorite songs. And it's one of those also that you're listening to. And then you're like, "Oh, Kelly, I'm screwed at you!" [ Laughter ] That's right. -Is there a direction you want this album to go in? Is there a space musically that you are excited about trying for the first time? -No, nothing necessarily trying. I mean, the roots of it is definitely R&B. -Yep. -I will never venture away from that. I mean, even in, like, playing in a dance space, like, that's still rooted in being like. -Yeah, yeah, exactly. -What I mean in us, so. I just really felt like or feel like with this is rooted in R&B. I'm just putting some extra stuff on top. And one of those things I'm really excited about is including some live instruments. 'Cause I miss that. -Same. -I miss, like, leading with that. I miss songs leading with that. And that being, like, the backbone of the song is not just the chorus. The chorus is, like, extra. And the great verse, catchy verse is extra. -Right. -The bridge is extra. -There's a bridge. -Right, yes. But the music is, like, really strong. -I feel like becoming a parent changes so much of how you approach things. My mother's mother passed around when she was 20. She had me when she was 20. And so as I was coming into this world, -she was leaving. -My grandmother was leaving this world. -Always share that the same. -And so I'm curious for you how motherhood in particular shifted things for you. -I'm a student. -Yeah. -Yeah, I'm literally like. I know that probably makes no sense, but it's like I'm just learning something every day. -Yeah. -Whether it's from them or about myself or what it takes, what kind of parent I want to be. Mistakes, then, you know, getting it right, then having another mistake. I feel like when I lost my mom, I. It was actually kind of a beautiful thing because here I am greeting birth to a baby but some motherhood and then a couple weeks past. And I'm greeting death. So. And I'm. I just. I couldn't believe the time span. -Yeah. -Because it was so short. And I saw the beauty in both. -Right. -But it was so strange to me that as I became a mother, I was losing mine. -Right. -So it made me think about one how I wanted to just be healthier because I lost my mom to a heart condition. It made me think about what kind of mother I wanted to be. -And I'm going to be super strict? -No, I don't want to be super strict. -Because I don't want to. -Do you know what I mean? -Yeah, yeah, of course. -I'm going to be a conscious parent. A general parent of this kind of parent. It was all these different things that I thought about. But it just made me want to be present because it made me realize that your time here on Earth is really and truly a vapor. And in some things, like, I'll realize I'm trying to prepare dinner and make it so perfect me while Noah's on the side. Like, can you just sit next to me? And that's all he wants. -All they cares about. -You know what I mean? -Yeah, and you're like, "Where's the mayonnaise?" [ Laughter ] But the balance of it all is real. Somebody was just asking that because they were talking about the movie. Of course, relationship goes to like, can you have love and your career? And I said, "Something is going to take a back seat." -At some point? -At some point. -In rotate. -Yes, exactly. It does. You rotate and you figure it out as you go. It's like, "Oh, well, this week I have this coming up. coming up. So I need to make sure that I'm in this kind of headspace. It's literally revolving. - Yeah. - All the time. And I'm figuring it out. And right when you think you caught it, you fuck it up again. - Yes, I'm gonna switch it up again, exactly. - Right. - I talked to my mom often about, does she feel like she still gets winks or messages cues from her mother? - Mm-hmm. - And she's like all the time. And do you, do you feel that way? Do you see things like where your mom comes through and you're like, "I know that's you"? - Absolutely. - When Noah is super, super, super, quick wit or sassy at the mouth. (laughing) I know that's not him being a four or five year old. - Right. - I'm like, "All right, Doris, I totally get it." But that one was below the bed. (laughing) - Right. - I do. - 'Cause he said something to me the other day, and I said, "Like, what just happened?" - How would you even know that? - He was trying to think of what he said, and it sounded just like her. Well, that's what I said, wasn't it? Like, that's my mom would say that exact sentence. - And how would he know that? That way? - How would you know that? And so, I just looked at him, I said, "Oh, her." - Yes, ma'am. (laughing) - Right. - Watch it, bro. (laughing) 'Cause if I would've responded the way he responded to me, - It would've been something. (laughing) - Didn't mean she would've found me himself enough. - Before he finished it. - Yeah, I couldn't have even gotten it out. - Right. - It would've never come out. - You look like he's about to say so. - Yes. I just thought out. - What do you think she would say about where your life is, where your family is, where you are in your life right now? - I think she would honestly be very proud. - Yeah. - Actually, I ran into this woman recently, and she doesn't know me at all. And she was like, "Oh, your mother." She just turned around, just talking to me. And she's like, "Oh my God, your mother's so proud of her." And I was like-- - What? Was it Sylvia Brown? - No. - Remember Sylvia Brown from Montel? - Yes. But it wasn't her. But it was somebody who has that kind of gift. - Right. - Or, you know, I'm very Southern, very Christian, so I was like, "Oh, lady, that was a problem." (laughing) - He said, "Merry, better get up." - So, who is mama is proud of him? (laughing) - She started being so specific with things. And I was like, "I sat there and just boo-hooed," because-- - Really? - Yeah, because she was talking about the kind of mother I am and, you know, how I came up and everything. She went into specific details. And I was just like, "No, you want to do is make your parents proud." - I do. - And I know that she's watching over me. I know that she's here, you know, and there are moments where I miss her so much. - Yeah. - Because I just want my mama. And I really wanted my boys to meet her. - Yeah. - And I'm grateful to have the mothers that I do, you know, while my mama teed on this earth and my community of moms around that support me and my family, but sometimes she's not just to her. So, that part of it gets really hard, but I'm supported here on earth, but I know she's watching out. 'Cause, like, accidents are certain things that happen. I just like notice where she shows up. She's like, "Whoop." - Yep. My grandmother was a minister. And, you know, you talk about like a prayer warrior kind of, and I feel like the things that I've accomplished in my life so far, the things, the kinds of favor, the kinds of, "Can't mess it up if I try." When I tried, (laughs) I am aware that that energy is covering me. - I feel like I am keeping my faith alive, which is what she wanted. - Yep. - I'm loving on my voice just unconditionally. - I'm married. - Doran's tried it a couple times. (laughs) - She said, "I did it. If you did it, thank you." - Yeah, we did it, so she's just like, "Thank God." And my career, but most of all, like, I have serious faith in myself. I think my mom is really most proud of that. - Your mother Tina, your mama Tina was sitting in this chair. - There was really one point that she got emotional. She talked about her girls and the three of you. Unbeknownst to the world, unknown to the world, when she was dealing with breast cancer, how y'all rallied around her. But what is it about that relationship that is, like, unlike anything else? - I think, for me, it's, I can't believe. (laughs) Ah, I'm trying to get this out of her. I can't believe there's someone who I don't share blood with that you were swear. - Loves you like that. - Yeah. And it's not just her. You know, it's, we are Travis. It's me, Solo, B, like, they share their mother with me. Angie, we talk at least five times a day. - Yeah. - It's the type of bond. I hope every woman has. Like, and we've seen the best and the worst hardest, you know, we've been through them all together. And I think that that's what makes it really incredible. Like, my mama T has seen my ugly inside. She's seen the beautiful side. She's seen me become a mother. She's seen me figure it out. She's everything, you know? And when I lost my mom, I remember she was so ill. This woman got on the plane and still came to be there next to me to bury my mother. And she knew it was a tough transition. She did. But she wanted to be right there with me. And that's my matriarch. And so I'm so happy that people got a chance to get to know her in a way in this book. - If I'm her own voice? - From her own perspective. - And I mean, the reading of the book is incredible, but when you hear her narrate it. - It's crazy. And when she, you know, gets very emotional about certain parts, like, it's just so honest. She's just so authentic and unapologetically galveston through and through. - Through and through baby. - Through baby. - That's anything. - That's my matriarch. - That's real. - Love her down. - I hope that people who are watching this can understand what it means to be on the receiving end of being brought into a family. - Yeah. - The difference that it makes. - This world is going through a lot right now. - Yeah. - And I always say kindness goes a long way. I just heard Q-tips say that from one of these like social media guys, it just like ran past him on the street. It was like just be kind. It's so simple. And there is a difference. Like I remember somebody telling me and it was a three-year-old. What's the difference between being kind and being nice? - Nice. - He's like being nice is when you have to try. You just have to try to be nice. (laughing) But being kind is you do it. You do it from your heart. When you do it from your heart, it's being kind. It means like you just naturally want to. I was like, that's not a three-year-old. - That baby's been here before. - Either baby's been here before or I was supposed to hear just that. It's never left me. It's been in here 25 years. - Seriously? - Yes, he's 20 something years old now. And it's so right. - So right. - Because it's being nice is the performance. - Yes. But when you're kind, you're like, no, no, no, I want to, I want to. - Yeah. - And I think that everybody has to just one kind of, one random act of kindness. - It really is that simple.
