was 17 to my first like record deal and i was just like singing songs like they kind of like stopped me from writing my own songs and i was just like singing songs that were like given to me because i just felt like i don't know i didn't like i feel like a lot of the times like most especially like most of the artists that i know and like my peers that i look up to like they kind of had like their own crew of like friends that they like grew up with and like obviously i have friends but like all my friends like are doing their own things like i didn't have friends like in my in like music yeah until i got like older i was just listening to my label because i'm like they're the record label they know exactly they know how to make me like pop they know how to do this and that and then it was like a couple years go by and i'm just like guys like what are these songs like i felt like i was just doing like a science project and not like something that i actually was like in love with yeah and what was the question um describe your sound oh yeah so i i felt like a lot of the songs most of the time were like throwaway songs that were for other like bigger artists and i didn't really know what my sound was i just knew i wanted to sing yeah mama i want to sing you guys don't get that joke that's like that's an inside joke that i have oh i repeat it i said mama i want to sing she was like what is that joke she said yeah mama i want to sing but you slurred over that remember me so you guys i've had one drink but no meals no meals no meals no meals for us i guess so anyways what's your sound now so obviously like i was filming grown-ish and i wasn't like able to like record during that time yeah and i was independent at the time but i felt like i was just now getting into like my writing like my song writing bag and becoming confident in that and so after i filmed grown-ish i was like oh my god i'm like oh my god i'm like oh my god i'm grown-ish i was just like i feel like i need to explore like i feel like i never got to do what i want to do in life and so i just started like going out more and like partying more and like traveling more when i wanted to and experiencing different parts of the world like going to ibiza and like going to raves and i'm like wait why am i not making music that can live in these spaces yeah like why am i not experimenting with these spaces and i'm like i'm sick of writing songs that are like sad and slow and like whatever like i don't care like i'm exhausted like we get it like guys ain't shit yeah so i just started to experiment in that space it's so funny i was just having a conversation about like writing sad songs the other day with someone and i was like someone and i was like yeah like none of my songs are sad they're actually all about like partying and like having fun and feeling free yeah and being sexy yes and that's like and that's fine and that's fun yeah like everything doesn't need to be so deep and it's like I'm not in that like conscious like I am so emotional space like I actually and it's not even like and maybe it is that I'm like running from that but I don't feel like I am you guys know me yeah like I'm literally like life is great yeah we're having fun yeah I mean the only thing part of the like where you are in your life right now is yeah I mean the only thing is that like I guess that something that would be stressing me out which is something I do want to talk about on my album is I guess because kind of like the grind and the story of like being so focused and locked in and the different like things I go through like within the industry not within like my love life like I don't know about my fucking love life yeah yeah what love life honestly honestly I should write a song about that like what love life what love life that could be the title song what love life name of the album what love life gang bang well I feel like you kind of just touched on like the journey to candy right and like what inspired that was it someone or some place or was it just traveling and the lifestyle yeah I think it was it was the traveling it was by the way five was in the studio when I came up with the name because initially the name of the project was air candy so as I was working on the project I had the name like air candy just like always like it was on the mood board that was in the studio every day and everyone just kept being like I don't think that's the name of the project they're like that's like it's like weird like you're so much better than that you're so much and I was like what and so finally we're down to like okay these are the songs on the project I also like at one point was gonna call the project so happy I could die which people kind of liked but they like that but people like which is a play on like a lady gaga song which is one of my favorite lady gaga songs which one so happy I could die that's the name of the song I don't know that song I'm not familiar with my anrs and like five would come to the studio sometimes like take things off the mood board put them on the mood board like whatever and we're screaming in the studio we're compared to what they go through right so i'm just like i need to like tough it up yeah and push it through i also don't know if that's like necessarily the healthiest thing because i think that what we all experience like isn't necessarily normal and what our friends experience is like completely a 180 normal yeah of normal so like don't also like put down your own experience no i definitely i definitely don't of the people that we're surrounded by i definitely don't but i think that it's kind of like we're grown and we've been around this for long enough to know that it's kind of like something that you sign up for yeah like and unfortunately it's that it sounds sad and it sounds like like we all have sad faces now but it's like it's kind of like it's kind of like something you like sign up for because like we do want to be successful we do want to like have careers in this industry and like this is how we make our money this is how we do our thing and something that we love to do at the end of the day we love to post we love to make music we love to make content we love to like do things and be in this we love to act we love to sing we love to make brands and do things like that it's like we love to be creative in this space and it's like if that's something you want to do and be private about it you can go to fucking switzerland and hide in a fucking cottage and do that if you want to you can move to japan and like drop off the face of the earth you can move to fucking wisconsin and drop off the face of the earth if you want to but we don't yeah like we want to share it with the world yeah and with the internet being what it is today and even like with stan culture and stuff like that like i wish that it was different and i wish that people like had more of like decorum and like a empathy it's just not what it is and hopefully like one day there will be something that like changes that in the world and i think that music is the only thing that can do know how to approach it and then vaughn was just like wait you and k needs to like work together like why haven't you guys worked together i was like i don't know like he's just busy like and then kind of just like more sessions between us and and now i just i love k like he's like i was gonna say he's like my first like cosign but i have been cosigned like i can't like disregard timbaland because like he also gave me like a huge cosign as well too we did a full project together but i feel like k is like my actual like friend yeah and like loves me and i feel like k is like my actual make the same kind of music or you guys are both black girls, or you guys are this or that. friends who support me and give me like real opinion not just like show up for the photo op right yeah not saying that about timbaland like timbaland actually was like they're supporting me too as atlanta okay and then i'm also doing lollapalooza what's different about this tour compared to your past live performances i don't know yet because i haven't hit the stage but i feel like obviously the music i'm gonna say you're probably so excited yeah it's just gonna be a completely different energy i guess i what i will say is just gonna be me on the stage i've just been very inspired by just like i i just wanted to feel like a party and that people get the experience of partying with me which is really fun like not like really bad it's very fun yeah i just wanted to feel like a party fun giving vocals giving just like my md is like sick lights fit fun sexy just like yeah dance party show up ready to dance like one of my one of my i love going to shows and concerts and one of my hadn't seen you perform your new music yet and you literally like captivated the whole party like came from like spread out and she was just on like i was like how did she just like by the way that was crazy because we were all sitting there like all all of us like watching her being like what well that was crazy because like i was obviously like late yeah no i literally like walked in purse on shoulder and then i'm like talking i'm like hey guys hey and the song starts playing my song and i'm like oh shit and then i like run on the stage like throw my purse somewhere and i just start like performing i thought i was doing one song and then he played another he played like 10 songs and i was like every time like i kept like walking off the stage a little bit he was like hey and another one there i was like okay it was so fun it was so fun and it got me just like i think that was the last time i was like on stage and it just got me excited for tour yeah because it's just like that was just me like literally just being free so imagine when it's like a full like actual show yeah and like planned out yeah with things but it's been exciting like just group chats and like i've been like sketching on my ipad like little things and like outfits and lighting that i want to do because like the venues are really small because i just wanted to feel like intimate and like i wanted to feel like the party you couldn't get into yeah so i'm excited is there a is there a specific location or spot that you're excited about the most like location um i mean i think like my hometown like in brooklyn yeah also because like the venue is like i can walk to the venue from my apartment like i think i will actually well new york is sold out so i'm sure you can make this i'm sure you can
