(soft piano music) - Lemonade. - Hey everybody, it's me, Debbie Camabell. This season on my podcast, who's with me, I speak with actor, rapper, producer, Davy Diggs. What does need to? - The jump off for me was Hamilton and it was the most popular thing in a very long time, but it was still for me. It was me and my friends making something dumb. I'm a relatively shy person, play a lot of boisterous characters, and I'm really that way in life. - Listen to who's with me with Debbie Camabell, wherever you get your podcast. - On all of it with me, Alison Stewart, we'll talk about art, music, theater, literature, history, food, well, all of it. Here in-depth insightful interviews with authors like Zadie Smith, musicians like Steve Earl, actors like Kate Winslet and Beyond. You never know who you'll hear next on all of it, but it's always worth listening. That's all of it, available wherever you get your podcasts. - I zoomed through four seasons of very dense material in like three weeks, so that is my pitch for industry and everybody should watch it and you're going to be on this next season, so I just wanted to speak to that because it's just a fucking A+ show. - Hello, obsessives, quick question. How much is too much? Only owning purple clothing, having the cardboard cutouts of every 90s heartthrob, thrifting for the most unique embroidered horse pillow to add to your overflowing collection. Please, we don't even flinch at that here. And by we, I mean me. Welcome to OMG Obsessed. I am Sasha Mammott, and today's guest is all about committing to the bit. Skipping right past sanity and landing in someone's should probably intervene territory. You probably know her as Willa from HBO's succession or as Morgan on Netflix's Nobody Wants This, and you might even know that she pulled off a con so airtight, Christian Bell had to phone a friend. I am of course talking about Justine Lube. - OMG Obsessed. - Hi. - Dude, what's up? How are you? - I'm good, I'm good, how are you? - I'm good, I'm good. I'm in Wales getting over an illness, but I'm good. - Oh no, what's the illness? - Who knows, some sort of crazy flu. - At least you've got your goat. - But you've got your goat to keep you company. - Yeah, exactly, I have my tiny little belly goat. Where are you in the world right now? - I'm in New York. I'm in New York. - I'm in Brooklyn. - Oh, fun. - Yeah, fun. The guy who was setting up my camera was asking me what this was for and I said, it was for your podcast and he didn't know about girls 'cause he's 23 and I was like, you've got to watch girls. It's like, you live in New York. You live in New York and you're 23. Like, this is the moment, you gotta get on it. (laughing) - That's amazing. I feel like he's definitely not our target demographic, although it was fascinating to see specifically when the show was on. I don't know if you had this with your show, but my favorite thing ever was when people who should not be fans of the show would freak out. I was walking to a yoga class or something one day passing a firehouse and there was a dude out front like hosing down one of the trucks and then he was like, "Yo, Ron, it's Shoshana!" And I was like, what's happening? And this whole fire crew came out and they were like, "Oh yeah, we watched the show when we're on night duty or something." - It's amazing. - I kinda feel like there wasn't even a Democrat. I feel like it was just like a zeitgeist. Everybody's obsessed with the show, like runs the gamut. Like my parents watched it, I watched it. I think he was like, I think he was maybe 12 years old when it came out. So like, that might have been the mist demographic and like now it's time. It's having this like new resurgence too. So like, you know. - Yeah. - Gotta get on it. - No, true. - I found that with succession. I remember I was on like, had to do this jury for Nantucket Film Festival. And so they like flew me on this little tiny like, I guess it's like, I wouldn't call it a private jet, but it's like as close to that as possible where they like fly people to Nantucket from New York. - Right. - And there were like all these finance guys on the flight and they were like obsessed with succession. And I was like, this is hilarious because like, they are making fun of you. Like, you guys. - But they're like not smart enough to get it. - No, I feel like I didn't understand. - It's a rich guy, like these like rich finance bros like love the show. And I'm like, you do know like that it is like, it's not like just like, it's not fetishizing this like, this kind of lifestyle. It's actually like poking fun and kind of, it's like, it's satirizing. It's making like, it's pointing out how toxic the world you live in is. So that was kind of funny. And I did say that to them. I was like, haha, it's so funny. Do you know what the show is about, right? - And did they get it or were they like, I mean, I think these guys just like love watching like, rich people behavior is kind of like, what if all? I think I did, I'm like, I don't think they got the memo or if they did, they just didn't care. - That's really funny. - Yeah. I need to talk about this run in that you had with Kristen Bell piercing your ears because I recently gave and got a tattoo like with friends. - What did you do stick in the hope or? - No, we did it with a fucking gun because my buddy got bored during COVID and she and her husband like bought a gun. They live in like Arrowhead. And he works with all these like very cool hip like musicians. And so they'll come through and stay at the house and they'll all give tattoos. It's so much harder than I expected it to be. I was really kind of shook, but not that I think I'm like gonna be good at everything but I was like, that's hard. And I feel like piercing ears is maybe the same thing. - Yeah, I mean, it's, it went pretty smooth. I think that there's a gun that you can get that is like a, there's different kinds of guns. There's the one that's like a needle going, or it's not even a gun. I think it's like they just stick the needle. Like if you go to a piercing parlor or like they stick a needle through. And this was like a gun that just basically punches and it has like only one size. Like only one kind of earring can you put in it. But I just like really wanted a second one 'cause Kristen has them like all over her ears. And I got it. - I was like, can you do it? So it went pretty smooth and it didn't hurt at all. And I've gotten like, I got my cartilage pierced ones. I've gotten my nose pierced before both of those are gone. But this one didn't hurt at all. Like literally no pain. I didn't even feel it really. It was just like impact feeling. - That's crazy, yeah. But I also imagined like full parent trap moment. Like I pictured you with like an ice cube and then the apple piece and like. - No. - Okay, okay. Wouldn't go well. - Okay, well I'm not a needles. I'm not a needles gal. Are you an obsessive person in general? - I feel like I become less obsessive in my 30s, but I definitely, I mean, I used to have like a very, very obsessive personality. - Quite an expensive commodity. - I wanna talk about your first obsession. Like all of this stress, that's like the stress of being sick. When I read your obsession, I was like, never have I wanted to go to this place more than right now. - Yeah. - Because I'm also obsessed with Olympics spa. - Oh, isn't it the best? I mean, you couldn't go there right now because you're just like a walking petri dish of like. - Absolutely, could not. They would turn me away at the door and I would never, I would not dare. I love the signs there. The sign there that's like do not come into this pool if you've had explosive diarrhea in the past like four weeks. But I also feel like that sign is up at like any pool at any hotel ever. And it's like, but it's like explosive diarrhea within like the past six months or something. And you're like, define explosive, also like really? No, but they mean business. I used to go because I grew up in LA when I was in high school. My older sister introduced me to it and it would be like our little ritual. She would pick me up in Carpool Line at school if I had school on my birthday and she would take me to Olympics spa with her other friend. And I was like, I thought I was so cool because I was going to this like place in Korea town and just like get naked with all the other ladies. But I like, yeah, I mean, I think that place is heaven. - It is heaven, it's heaven. It's like, I feel like, yeah, it's gotten to, I mean, first of all, it's like the one thing that when I was pregnant and breastfeeding, I was like literally like, I felt like I was being tortured that I wasn't being, that I wasn't able to go and sit in like my happy place. Like for me, it's like an all day event that I do probably, I'd say like once or twice a month. Like I literally, I'm like, I'm going in in the morning. I'm gonna like soak and steam and do all the things all day. Then I'm gonna do like a crazy, you know, like where they put you on that slab and you feel like you're like a dead body and they're just like basically like scraping off all your dead skin and doing like all kinds of things. It's such a like unique sensation that I'd never experienced before of being like handled in that.
way and I kind of like love it. Yeah it is it's both it's crazy because you're in such a vulnerable position and there are these like half-naked women who are kind of in a way like man-handling news. No totally. And the scrub the scrubbing is so aggressive but it also feels like so loving and tender at the same time. Yes and the vibe just for everyone who's listening who's never been to Olympic Spa there's like these tables that are in like a brightly fluorescently lit room that are separated like by like me or feet from other people who are also on these like slab tables and basically like your naked on top of this table and and you're kind of just meant to like go slack while these these women who are these like very strong halfway naked women like lift up lift up your limbs and like scrub you and like dump you down and then take like huge bot like big big buckets of water and just like dump them on you to like get all the sloughed up dead skin off the table. And then like from there you can kind of be like I want to do like like which was your like treatment of choice do you remember? Whatever that scrub is called so like I think I was looking at the website again yesterday I think they now call it the goddess that's literally just like like toe like tip what do they call it tip to toe had to top to bottom scrub yeah like that plus massage plus I remember they put some sort of weird something on your face and then I have they put honey just honey honey on your face and then they wash your hair and they would do something with like peppermint oil in your hair yes and it's the best thing you've ever experienced in your life and then you have to like leave the experience to go like rinse off your hair like or not your hair I can't remember oh no you have to like wash your hair really thoroughly then they come you come back from that they've dried the whole thing off and then they I mean in the one that I do because I do pure bliss or like the milk and honey treatment mostly I have done glass skin a few times which is glass skin is like literally just like they peel off your skin but they take you like it's like the most intense version of the like exfoliation situation that they do in every other treatment what's happening that they're not doing in the other treatments because that feels like there's no more skin to be I feel like it's a callous removal like scrubbing exfoliation like every kind of exfoliation that you can possibly have without like the like then second process which is like when you come back they've dried everything off and then they do like lots of like the honey thing that you describe the scalp thing that you just write they wash your hair they also like give you a massage like a full body massage which is like yeah not like a relaxing like very much no it's more just like we're working stuff out we're like getting we're like yeah we're we're tuning the machine it's not like we're here for a spot so it's like kind of it's like weird um like it feels almost like an intent an antagonistic like experience but I kind of like love it and like you said there's like a part of me that just like loves being like handled and like thrown around in that way where you're just like submitting submitting to these women yeah you're kind of you're like take me like do it do what you want with me because I know you know better yeah but then sometimes you oh and my favorite thing is when sometimes like you won't feel something for a little bit and if you like peek your eye open they're just like having a quick snap oh yeah totally totally they eat back there which I'm like like I get it like that is like it's tends to be like moving us all around all day all day all day long I know it's amazing they're like machines and and the other part of it which like we didn't get that much into but because this is my obsession I should go into there's like every kind of room there's like a salt room and there's like an oxygen like a hyperbaric like oxygen room where you just lay in and the oxygen is good I guess and then there's like a steam there's a steam room there's like a dry sauna there's a cold plunge and then there's like two jacuzzi like I know this layout so well and then there's like a jade room which is just for like chilling in the dark once it's over that's like the floor that's like a jade floor that's heated where you literally go and I've had like some of the deepest sleeps of my life just like laying on that floor post being scrubsged down I do this a lot with my girlfriends to like all invite like four girlfriends will do this like a whole experience together and then we'll all go out to eat together and it's like literally the perfect day yeah no I understand it's a it's you kind of can't it cannot be taught no and it's like right there in LA and it feels like so singular like there's nothing I'm like you can't find that experience in so many other places like it feels like so unique and it feels so LA and it feels like so different than every day that I like it feels like a different kind of day than every other day that I live so yeah I'm like I'm obsessed with it I discovered fuel while shooting in Wales because they do not have the protein powder that I usually like in the UK I saw fuel and I was like okay another plant-based protein let's give it a go and I am absolutely obsessed with it it is so delicious I'm a smoothie fanatic and I make one probably every day and this is hands down my absolute favorite the black edition powder has 40 grams of protein and mixes with water or milk in about 30 seconds I also highly recommend doing it with oat milk more that is e q u i p dot health slash o mg have you ever had like a weird experience there of any sort no I've been really lucky I've heard about weird experiences at like other spas but that is not one that I have there's that's not I've never had a weird one the one thing that I have experienced is just running into the same people like week after week when I go like we're like oh we're both doing the same thing where we've like figured out that this is like the move um and yeah and in fact is like always there which I don't know if we have to cut for her like privacy but that's um that's incredible but she's there like every single time at the same and there was one point where I like didn't have any cash on me it was like the first time that I had Ballet and not to street parking and I thought that I could do like apple pay or credit card and they were like cash only and so like she was walking up behind me and she's like I've got you and like paid for my Ballet um oh my god you're like paid for my Ballet and so since then I've like we've like flagged each other and been like hey girl a few times um that's incredible yeah um I've never had like a weird experience there but I did when I was like much much younger I'd gone through like a horrible breakup uh-huh and my older sister
sister had taken me. And I was like basically already a noodle. And then I got the scrub down. And the woman who was doing my scrub was like particularly aggressive. And then you know like when they finish and they sit you up and they wrap your hair and they kind of like dry you off. And then they're like, okay, like go on your way. - Did you pass out? - She sat me up. And I like look, I was like looking at her and she looked what felt like straight into my soul. And then she just pulled me in to this like bare hug and held me and I just started weakening. And she just like held me until I stopped crying. And I was like, this is the craziest experience of my life. - Oh my God. - It was wild. - So she saw that and you, she was like baby needs a hug. Baby needs a hug and she gave it to me. And it was so sweet and amazing. I thought you were gonna say that you were about to pass out 'cause there's been several times where I'd like gotten out of the hot tub. And I'm like, I feel like I like got out too quickly and like all the heat, all the heat and all the different temperatures in my body were like enough. - Yeah. - I almost like ate it. - Yeah. What's it called? The mung mung wart bath or something that like makes you feel like you're a tea bag? - Oh, what's that one? What is that? - It's like one of the baths that's like, it looks like brown water. - Where is that? I don't know about that one. It's somewhere amongst all the pools. - Whoa, I don't know about this one. - Okay. - I wanna be a tea bag. - Maybe they've done away with it. But yeah, it feels nice to be a tea bag sometimes. - Yeah. - Okay. I wanna talk about your next obsession because I would like it to be my obsession, but I'm so bad at it and I don't know why. But you're a gardener. Like plants see me. They like smell my essence and they die. - Uh-huh. - Well, I mean, do you care about plants? - Yes. So very much so. And I love a garden and I love a vegetable. - Do you think you're overwatering maybe? - Maybe you're over, maybe you're overdoing it. - I will like follow to a tea, what the instructions are. Like if I ever, you know, I've had friends be like, can you take care of my plant while I'm gone? Like this is exactly what I do. And I'm like sure. And the plant, like day two is just like. - No. - I know. I don't know why. I don't know what happens. - That's so weird. - So strange, but I just bought a new house and I really wanna have like a garden. - Yeah. - So I need to know all about your gardening obsession. - I'm into plants. I like, I'm into like learning about plant medicine. I like love Michael Paul and I'm like, I'm into like learning about plants, but I also just like feel like I got really into just having plants around and they make me happy. And I like liked the like taking care of them of it all. And then I got a new house like you have. And when I moved in, there were these like garden boxes that were like so pretty in the back, but they had like nothing in them. They were like completely barren, except for these like very sad like pepper plants. And they were only like literally the only thing that was planted in these boxes were these like dried up shriveled peppers. And I was like, how interesting that they didn't like plant anything but peppers. And also the like soil hadn't been changed since the fires. So like they had just been like neglected. And I was like, I'm gonna do this like whole new situation where I wanna like start growing food. And I wanna have like a flower bed 'cause I like love floral arrangements. And I love like having fresh flowers in my house. It's just become this like insane oasis. And I'm like completely obsessed with it. And also like having fun learning by like trial and error too, like I'll be like, what's going on? Like why is this plant dying? And then like looking it up and being like, oh, like that plant has fruited. Like there's been tons of cucumbers that have come out of that. And so I need to like re-fertilize that area. So like all of that like mildew is coming from like me not knowing like when the right time to fertilize again because it's already fruited and it's sucked out all this nutrients to make fruit. Or like I know how to like mate a zucchini flower 'cause there's like different parts of like zucchini that you like put together. And then it like will pollinate in a certain way. And so like it will fruit like more quickly. It's just been really fun. I've learned like what bugs you want, what bugs you want, what bugs you don't want. Like okay, I see like a praying mantis in there. Great, I see a grasshopper. We relocate that guy. Like that guy's not good for that. We've like how to like get rid of aphids. Like it's like a whole thing and it's like never ending. You're kind of like always kind of like, there's like always this like pendulum and you're always kind of trying to figure out like how to like balance things out and make sure that everything's happy. And so it's like a lot of attention and care. So that's why I asked like, do you like plans at the beginning because it's like, it's not casual feeling. Like I think that's the one thing I would say is it feels like a full commitment. And even now I'm gone in New York and my dad. I was like, dad, you're on duty. Like so he's like watching and taking care of it for me. And luckily he's like an amazing gardener. So it's all good, but it's like, it's like something you have to sustain all the time. That's incredible. I didn't realize it went. I mean, like not that I'm like, thought that plants were simple, but like it goes so deep. Like that's such a rich obsession. - It is. There's just so much to do. There's like so much to figure out all the time. Like even just flowers, like you have to trim dead heads all the time because they'll like, if you're not trimming them, then like water is being sent down a dead pathway and you're just like wasting water on a dead, like a flower that's already blossomed and bloomed and is done. So it's like, it's really just, I mean, I'm loving it. And I'm still like very much like learning about it. Luckily, like I said, my dad gardens, my friend gardens, so like I've had like a lot of like tutorial, but it isn't like, like you said, it's just, it's so much more like nuance than I would have I would have imagined either. - Yeah. - Just like constant kind of like re-evaluation. - Okay, well, I know you have to go. So we're gonna put a pen in that and I'm gonna make you come over to my new place when we're back in LA. - Are you in LA? - And yeah, I'm in LA. - Oh, great. Yeah, no, I can help you. I can help you. - And let's talk gardens because I wanna have like a full vegetable garden. So you can teach me all of your tricks. - Hey, it's Julia Louis-Dreyfus from The Wiser than Meat Podcast, among other things. And I've got a little holiday wisdom for you. Hosting during the holidays means lots of cooking and that means your trash is gonna be full of smelly, rotting food, yuck. So here's the wisdom. Get a mill food recycler. I did. We've had ours for years and it has totally transformed our kitchen. It's unbelievable how much cleaner everything is now. Plus, it's so easy to use. You toss in basically any food you don't eat. Peels, pits, meat, dairy bones. Last year we put in a whole turkey carcass, really. While you sleep, mill automatically dries and grinds all your food waste down to about a fifth of its size. That means at night you can fill it after a big, elaborate dinner and by morning they'll be room for breakfast. Nothing rots, nothing stinks, no fruit flies. And my favorite part, no more of those gross, dripping mid-dinner garbage runs. If you want a cleaner, calmer kitchen this holiday season, go to mill.com/wiser for an exclusive offer. That's mill.com/wiser. Happy hosting. Hey everybody, it's me, Debbie Camarbell. This season on my podcast who's with me, I speak with actor, rapper, producer, Davy Diggs. What does need to? The jump off for me was Hamilton and it was the most popular thing in a very long time. But it was still for me. I'm a relatively shy person, play a lot of boisterous characters. I'm really that way in life. Listen to who's with me with Debbie Camarbell, wherever you get your podcasts. On all of it with me, Alison Stewart, we'll talk about art, music, theater, literature, history, food. Well, all of it. Here in-depth, insightful interviews with authors like Zadie Smith, musicians like Steve Earl, actors like Kate Winslet and Beyond. That's all of it available wherever you get your podcasts. I like to make everybody pitch their obsession in one minute. Like, as if I'm an alien that's come down from space. So you can pick what you want to do. Is it, I mean, I sort of think you should do Olympic Spa. Okay, like get the aliens to go. But basically, like, why should I love it? Why should I be obsessed with it? Here's a question. It's not one that we've done before, but I mean, I would love to pitch industry for you. You want to pitch industry for me. Okay, let's go. Okay, why should everyone watch industry? Okay, ready? Yeah, okay. So industries show that I got into recently because I felt completely overwhelmed by getting involved in it just because it felt so smart.
And I was scared to dip into something that felt like cerebrally like above my pay grade. I got in, I surrendered to not knowing what they're talking about a lot of the time and just like leaned into feeling the stakes of the situation. It's some of the best acting I've ever seen on television. It's remarkable storytelling. The writing is amazing. And I just feel like the stakes are high throughout the whole time. It keeps you on the edge of the seat. You want to know what's happening. There's so many like interpersonal kind of like incredible stories. I just love it. I'm obsessed with all the actors. I zoomed through four seasons of very dense material in like three weeks. So that is my pitch for industry and everybody should watch it. And you're going to be on this next season. So I just like wanted to speak to that because it's just a fucking A+ show. - Oh my god, literally exactly at a minute that was incredible. I'm so happy you love it. I sort of consumed it in the same way that you did. And I'm like, now learning my lines sometimes. I'm like, I don't, yeah, I don't, I don't even know how they do it. - I don't know how they do it. Like I've, especially certain story. Like when Max Mandela joined, I was like, how is he saying like there's certain story lines where they have to speak so much about things that are so hard to understand that you're just like, are you so fast? - Are you so fast? - Like so fast because the boy's dialogue is so, it has that very much that his Girl Friday tempo. But it's like, you're saying all of that. - Yeah, and you have to make it sound like you live in that vocabulary as a person and that it's second nature to you and that it's in your blood. And I'm like, as an actor who's done that before with like my own version of like procedural stuff or like hospital stuff or like once I played a hacker, like it was like a fucking nightmare like I hated it so much. - It's really crazy. - I mean, like it's worth it for that show because it's so good. But man, I thought the same thing. I'm like, how are they even doing this? Are they like, are they okay? - Yeah, I mean, I think, I think yes and no. - Okay, who do you, if you had to guess who I was playing on the show? Like what character do you think I'm playing? - I mean, it's so hard because I really, I mean, I have no idea. I feel like I want you to be some sort of like love interest because I like weirdly do have like such a, I think that those moments are like, are kind of the ones that like get me the most like the whole like Yasman storyline with him and like the devastation in that moment where she's like, yes, it's like it hit so hard for me and I feel like they're like sneakily very good at that kind of like, that kind of stuff like bubbling under the surface and like living and evolving and then just like shattering everyone. So I'm like, maybe she's playing someone's love interest or maybe she's playing like, I don't know, like can there be another like rival firm? I don't know. I want to know, I want to know. I gotta wait and find out. But like, oh my God, dude, speaking to what you were just saying, the episode where, I mean, for people who haven't watched it I don't want to spoil it, I guess, but also, if you haven't watched it, then you're a bad person. - Where she sleeps with him and then she goes on to what's his fate, then she moves on to Kit Harington's character in like, Degrees or Mary. - They're like, yeah. - And then he sits there and he says, I understand or whatever it is. Like, I mean, essentially like, I understand and you're just like, oh my God, and it's literally been like three and a half seasons of will they won't they? And then they do and they say, I love you for the first time. And then she goes and she gets engaged to someone else. - It's devastating. It like rocked me. I was like sitting with that for like, it's funny that you mentioned that exact same thing because it sat with me for, it sat with me for like weeks. I'm not even kidding. It like really got me. And they just do this thing where they're like, the characters in order to like survive, they actually can't evolve. Like they kind of have to be the people that they are. They like, they kind of have to be like, in order to be successful in that toxic environment, they kind of have to hold onto the things that are like pulling them down in terms of like being humans. You know, it's funny given how like tense and intense the show is. The set is like so joyous and lovely. Which says, I mean, I guess what like allows everybody to then go to those like crazy dark places. But yeah, I'm excited for everyone to see it. But truly, thank you for doing this. This was a joy. - Yeah, it's so fun. I like love that we go to love a Olympics spa. It's so great. I will be in Wales until the end of January, but I will no question see you at Olympic Spa at some point once I'm. - Okay, great. Let's get in there. Let's like, let's guard in and soak together. - Let's guard in and soak. Like truly nothing could make me happier. - Me neither. - I mean, earnestly. - Okay. - If you haven't subscribed to Lemonada Premium yet, now is the perfect time.
