JENNA BOYD: "Apartmentsteading," a New Way to View Your Single Years, Being Bold, & Boyd Studios
47m 36s
In this interview, actress Jenna Boyd discusses her transition from a consumer of social media content to a creator focused on self-sufficiency, particularly in food. She expresses skepticism about government food regulation and emphasizes taking personal responsibility for sourcing quality, local food, a shift influenced by her husband who introduced her to farm-fresh items like eggs and raw dairy. Boyd finds this approach empowering and confidence-building. The conversation then shifts to relationships, where she reflects on her single season, advising others to trust God's timing and focus on personal growth rather than actively pursuing marriage. She explains that meeting her husband allowed her to embrace femininity and biblical submission, feeling secure without needing to control the relationship. Boyd encourages single women to prepare to be "found" by the right partner, emphasizing that men should pursue women as designed.
Hey guys, what's up, welcome back to live. Lap what I'm live and I am joined by such an amazing guest today actress Jenna boyd and if you're a fellow 90s kid you definitely grew up watching her in a personal favorite childhood movie of mine. Sisterhood of the traveling pants, it's pretty iconic but another one of her most loved projects is the hit Netflix original series A Typical where she played Stan's girlfriend. Paige so Jenna thank you so much for coming on today. Yeah, absolutely. I'm excited to talk about all the things that was very intriguing to me what you wanted to talk about and I was like wow no one ever wants to talk to me about this stuff so I'm really excited. I know I feel like yeah first things first like your Instagram anyone is listening and follows you then they've seen the apartment setting content we've got like the organ knee chronicles the Roddairy hike which thank you for that by the way. The handmade pasta journey the work so since we both follow Carnivore Arealias could I see you on there? I have to know how you took the leap from being a viewer of this kind of content to being like I'm gonna make it myself. No it's a great question just because I mean you can sit there and watch people do incredible things on social media all day long I do it often and you're just kind of like wow this is making so much sense and you know there's a lot of negative stuff about being on social media and I oscillate that can forth quite a bit between wanting to like throw my phone off the window because I hate it and being like wow there's so much to learn from so many cool people on here but I think probably what happened is a combination of just kind of the wild ride we all went on a couple years ago 2020 and feeling like oh I don't really love this out of control feeling where people are telling me that I can't get these things or that there's a shortage of this thing and I don't know it's probably a big-time personality thing whereas just like I don't really love that lack of control I want to be able to control the most basic thing is in my life which is to feed myself right to feed myself well and you know don't know how high up on my soapbox you want me to get but I also just feel like I've reached a point where and I don't know if it's just how much I've learned by watching other people or reading or whatever but I've kind of reached a point where I'm like oh you know it's actually not the government's job to make sure I'm fed like that's yes that's my job and food is so heavily regulated by this government agency and that government agency and obviously things are gonna slip through the cracks because they can't monitor everyone 24/7 that's completely unrealistic and so things are gonna slip through the cracks and I just have come to this point where I'm like yeah no but it's actually not the government's responsibility to protect my food source like it's my responsibility to feed myself and my family and how do I want to do that and I need to go figure it out instead of placing blame on government regulation you know so that's where I'm coming from a little bit is you know skepticism with those regulatory bodies generally but also just wanting to be a person who takes responsibility instead of points fingers that like oh well this isn't right the way that they're running this it's like well am I doing my due diligence to make sure that what I put in my body to fuel myself is the best thing possible and actually benefits my local community and all of that kind of stuff but I think another reason that all of this has really exploded is because when I met my husband who was cattle ranching at the time he kind of blew my world open up always been very health conscious but I was drinking almond milk and oat milk when I met him oh no like what are you doing um and so he when we were dating he never walked through my door without eggs from the chickens that he had or raw dairy from you know the dairy and so just stuff like that where that really opened my mind up to a whole different side of health conscious and like went way into crunchy so that's kind of how that journey began that's a man girls get you a man that brings eggs and beef and milk to your door that's incredible same-changer can't and out of ten would recommend finding a guy who brings beef and eggs in raw milk oh man and now I a hundred and ten percent agree with everything you said and I feel like there is something really cool and honestly confidence building and freeing about being like no it's my responsibility to purchase food that I feel good about and feed myself in a way that is fueling me to live out my purpose it seems I don't know big picture when you look at it that way but that's what foods for it's to fuel you so that you can go do what you're on the earth to do yeah so I think there is a lot of I guess how commercialized everything's gotten it's a little bit gotten out of people's hands and they just sort of really putting their hands out like oh feed me but wow cool is it to go to your local farmers market and meet the people who are actually growing these beats or go to the butcher or someone that has chickens and like you look forward to eating the food more because you know where it came from and you know it's good and it's exciting it is it really is and I think it drives sometimes the people around me crazy that I'm just so excited about food or so excited that something I thought had to be complicated and that actually isn't and you can make it yourself and it isn't hard and so I get it really excited about those things just because I think I'm just not willing to sacrifice the quality on those things anymore and obviously we are not yet in a position where we're not getting anything from the store and probably never will be you know fully not relying on a store and some capacity but I just like and maybe it's a proving it to myself thing that it's like no I can do that and there's something really exciting and fun about that because it's like no I don't have to rely on anybody else I can do this we're obviously a convenient driven culture and as great as that is the appreciation of food has kind of gone away when you can get it so conveniently and then if you stop and take the time to realize like wow that is amazing how that's made you know something as simple as butter I'm just like I had no idea that you just like made whipped cream and then kept going a little longer and then you have butter I had no idea which sounds so stupid but I feel like a lot of people don't either and so I just think it's really empowering and amazing and to kind of understand that while I live in a convenience driven world it is important for me to know these things because I just don't know if there's something more important besides the truth of scripture to know then like literally how to provide food for yourself and procure food and I think too like that's become such an overlooked part of being part of a family and even like being a wife oh yeah I mean and everybody has to make that decision for their family if they want to be in that role or not and like I fully plan on going and doing the thing that I feel like God's called me to do and all of that stuff too but my perspective on that stuff has just shifted and I think that'll happen to you you know when you get married and it's like what's actually important to me and where do I want to be investing most of my time and my effort and it's like well there isn't anything more important to me than my husband and my home and our future children and all of that kind of stuff and so I don't want to fork over the control of those things I just personally believe that like nobody else is going to care about my home like I do nobody's going to care about my husband like I do nobody's going to care about my kids like I do and I'm just not willing to welcome other control into my house that doesn't have the best interest of my house if that makes sense that 100 percent make sense and you sun that up so well I think we're seeing more and more people get on that path sure and it's really cool like so many people are talking about sea oils now that never did and I'm like oh look at it spreading this is crazy but one thing I love is that you brought up your husband and you have been sharing on social media about how it's really so worth it to wait for the man that God has for you so I would love if you could share about your season of waiting and what it was like meeting your now husband and then how you can look back now and be like okay yeah the season of waiting was totally worth it well I mean in short I can say that it absolutely was worth it but you know I also tended to look at my singleness which like has just become such a played outward with like all the girl single girl podcasts and stuff out there but that season in my life I for some reason was never the girl that was just like oh my gosh I just want to be in a relationship I just want to be married or I just want a boyfriend like for some reason I was pretty okay being by myself and oftentimes people try to set me up and I was not having it because I was just like
If I want to be in a relationship with somebody, it's going to need to be better than just being by myself. If I'm being totally honest, of course I wanted to get married. And of course I wanted all those things, but I think I was just always sure that that was coming and that I might as well enjoy this season of life now. For some reason I was able to maintain that perspective most of the time. And so I absolutely think it was worth it. And I also don't think I wasted away or like wished my single season away. I think I was in it and there were painful moments and all of that, but I never wished it away. Because I mean, I felt very purposed and always have. I was like God speaking to me about exactly what I'm supposed to do in my single season. So I'm going to do that. If some dude comes alongside me at some point then great. We'll start doing that together. But this is probably the biggest thing is that I wrestled with the idea of submission a lot as a single girl. I'm a very independent person. I have always been like, okay, Lord, I don't love this concept. So you're going to have to kind of help me understand because I don't want to be a slave to somebody else's agenda. Like I am not willing to do that. And as a single girl, I really felt like God showed me and revealed to me that like no, that's just why it matters who you choose to submit to. Yes. And so I was going, Oh, okay, that makes sense. And God's not asking us to submit to some guy that's not our husband yet. And that's why it's a really big deal who you choose is somebody who you can trust is going to handle that responsibly and still factor in what you think and what you want to ask you those things and lead with you in mind. And all of that isn't going to lord that over you or exercise that on you like I firmly believe it only insecure men do that. But I kind of had that revelation. And then I obviously had dated throughout that time. And there were just so many times where I felt like what it all boiled down to is that I don't trust the idea of submitting to this person. And I never reason like either they would try to theme and if you let it about it or take advantage of it or that I'm like, I don't know if I want you to be the leader in my home. I don't know if I trust your capacity or ability to do that, you know, just being super honest. But when I met my husband, it was it was like the first time in my life that I felt the freedom to just be feminine. And I'm like, it's yes. Okay. This is so great. Well, and it was a big deal because I have a personality type that tends to be kind of masculine words very achievement driven and, you know, go out there and get it and stand up for yourself and all that kind of stuff. Even relationships would put me on the defensive in that way at times where I felt like I needed to kind of establish like, oh no, this is actually how this is going to go, you know, you are not advantage of me. You are not going to manipulate me. And my husband has never once made me feel like that. I just felt this absolute freedom to like just be the woman in the relationship. I never had to take the lead. I never had to wonder where this was going. I never had to ask what are we and never had to do any of those things or take control because he wasn't. It's not that he's this super domineering personality, not at all. It's just there's such a character there and there's such a humility there that I was like, oh, I would trust you with anything. So it was so nice to like just get to be the woman in the relationship and have no other responsibility on that. And that was my first time ever feeling like I fully just relax in that. And that's a pretty big deal. If you've never been in that position, it's like, wow, that's that's what's worth waiting for is being able to know I could submit to this person because they're submitted to the Lord. So I have no questions. So everything you said was amazing. And to be honest, even going back to what you originally said, you just had so much faith that God was going to bring you the right guy at the right time and that he knew. And you were out there like so many of us, it's such a trap you get in so easily. Oh my gosh, what if my guy is here, you know, like you just get. I'm a girl too. Like I've had thoughts like I of course I have. I just have a really, really heartbroken feeling when something that I thought was great and did or whatever. But I just it was never the first thing on my mind is like, oh my gosh, when am I going to be in a relationship? Like I honestly think it's such a waste of time. And I do think a lot of Christian girls, especially like Christian influencers make such a big deal of it that what are girls supposed to think other than like I guess my life starts when I find the guy. I mean, it's such a shame. It is such a shame because God has so much for you in your single season. Like it's just not worth wishing away. It's a shame when girls wish it away or overly complicated or whatever. It's just it's silliness in my opinion. It is because at the end of the day, like who you are supposed to be with that was determined before the foundations of the year. God had that handled. Right. So our job is to be like, okay, Lord, what am I, what am I doing today? What am I doing this week? Like you might have to take it genuinely day by day if you're, you know, you want something so badly, but you're like, no, first of all, I'm not going to let it become an idol in my life. Second of all, if I want to be submitted to you as my Lord and Savior and I trust it as I'm walking the path that you have for me, you're going to bring the things into my life that need to be in my life. But again, like you said, it's such a cultural thing where I think a lot of times is especially social media. I know when I was in elementary, middle, even part of high school, there wasn't really social media going on. I just knew my school, but it was like a lot of the girls didn't have boyfriends. Like it's fine. Right now you see everyone on social media and you start comparing subconsciously. And it can be tough to actually be enjoying and seeing the full purpose of your time without boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, whatever. And you're so right on the social media front like for since the beginning of time, people have been able to compare their lives with everybody they knew locally, but we were never ever meant to carry the weight of comparing ourselves with the literal world like everyone. And it's too heavy of a burden to carry. I mean, I've just seen it time and time again and people, but I mean, even I still fall for it where I'll see it on social media and be like, wow, that looks like the picture perfect scenario. And then you find out that like everything's falling apart behind the scenes. And so it's just you have to be so vigilant. Because all of that stuff can creep its way into your thought life and you could be worked up about an image of perfection that literally does not exist. And that's the case almost all the time. And it's really sad, but you're so right about taking it day by day too. And I mean, that's straight up biblical like tomorrow has enough trouble of its own worry about today. And I have to remind myself that all the time because I'll get myself all worked up about like, well, I mean, what is this going to look like six months from now? And it's like, well, that's six months from now, Jenna's problem. Not today, Jenna's problem. Today, Jenna's problem is to deal with today. And that's it. And so if I could encourage single girls of one thing, it's like who your husband's going to be is later use problem. It's not today's problem at all. And in fact, it's probably not going to be much of your problem at all because if he's the right guy, he will pursue you and it will become very clear. And he will ask you to be his wife. And I'm going to worry about who your husband's going to like, oh, oh, yeah, that, that was good. But I mean, I just really believe that like, I think girls can because we are, and I might be unpopular for some people, but we are naturally a little bit more emotional beings. It's just the way that we're wired. And so we can tend to think about these things and really get ourselves worked up over them when like, it's not your job to pursue marriage. It's not your job to pursue a husband. The word literally says that he who finds a wife finds a good thing. Now, where once does it say she who finds a husband finds a good thing. So I would just encourage single girls be in a position where you're ready to be found. That's all focus on becoming a good wife before you are one. And be in a position where you're ready to be found. So that would involve not being in places where you're like, well, that's probably the right guys probably not going to find me there. Where do you want to be found and where do those guys hang out and like, let's go be there and be there often. And then be in a position to be found. That was like fire emojis. And like that was so good. That is so true. And that's another thing where I think culture has gotten it twisted of these girls constantly pursuing these guys. And that's just like, I'm sorry. They are going to be people that don't want to hear this, but that's not
the way women were designed. No. It was designed the man pursues the woman and that's why I'll get on a whole thing about that. But yeah. Well, that's right. And like it frustrates me to know end when girls are disappointed and they're that the guy's not taking initiative and the relationship. But it's like, well, you didn't let him take the very first initiative. So why would he take initiative literally ever again? It's not shocking. There is a way to weed out the guys that are not going to step up in a relationship. And step one, being in a relationship is like, I'm going to go pursue that girl and let her know that I'm interested. And if you take that away from them, then why should you ever have confidence that they're going to step up in the relationship? If they couldn't do the one first thing, if you didn't let them do that, then like, why would you ever expect that they could do anything else? Yeah. That really sets the precedent for the relationship. And look, at the end of the day, if he wants to, he will make it known. And because I totally understand what you're saying about you were kind of defensive. And like, I really want to make sure that this person isn't sketchy. And I am so on the same page with you. So if there's other girls out there that are listening and they're like, yeah, that's me. What was something with your now husband that you feel comfortable sharing that he did saying that he was interested in you that didn't give you that, oh, I need to be concerned or like overly worried here. Yeah. I mean, that's a super good question actually. Maybe it was just an age thing where we're both kind of at an age where we've had dating relationships and all of that kind of stuff where we're like, you know what? Let's not waste anybody's time and let's just be really transparent about who we are. And I think we absolutely did that. But he also made it known to me that he was interested in that he was pursuing me without like the aggression of it or being emotionally im modest himself by just spilling his guts right away. Even if he was feeling certain things pretty soon, he wasn't just spilling that all over the place. And he just led so gently with all of that stuff. And there was just so much humility. So he never tried to posture himself as being some guy that he was not. He was just so himself and unapologetic about that. And I think we both approached the first couple of dates, if you will, with this sense of like, wow, I'd really like to see that person again, but it's also not going to kill me if I don't, you know? And I know as unromantic as that sound, it's so true because it's like we were at a place in our lives where this going away wasn't going to crush us. We could want it, but it wasn't going to crush us. We're secure enough in ourselves to know that if this isn't it, God's got something that, but if this is it, that would be amazing. You know? And so I just think what it all boils down to, honestly, is that you have to give all of those moments over to the Lord. Like, oh, Lord, I like, is this the person? And it's just like, okay, this actually isn't my burden to carry. So I'm just going to take that, and I'm going to hand that over to the Lord. Like, there just isn't a sexier answer than that, really? There was, but it's like, you have to take every thought captive and things that you might want to ask. I encountered this a lot dating my now husband where I was like, oh, but I don't know about this. And I wonder what he thinks about this and what his stance is about this. And generally, I'm a pretty bold person. And so thinking, well, I'm just going to ask him what his feelings are about that or his stance is about that. And I actively felt the Lord several times go, don't say that. And yep, well, why? I mean, that's a good question. You're going to want me to want to know that, you know? And he's just like, hey, do you think I don't have this under control? Do you think I'm not going to reveal these things to you where it isn't a situation of you interrogating somebody about these things? And so I would, I would just be obedient about that stuff and not ask or not say anything. And God would always faithfully reveal that to me every single time. And so you just have to forfeit the control of it and give the guy an opportunity to lead because if you let them know that that's what you want them to do, because these poor guys out here, like God bless them, they don't know what you want them to do because our culture of feminism is so dominant that they're like, is this even, does this girl want me to do this at all? And so you do kind of need to let them know, like, you know, you got this, like you got a big dog like you can handle this. And that's the biggest thing I can say is that like you have to hand every moment over to the Lord and completely operate by peace and not trying to figure it out with your girlfriends is this a peaceful relationship that you want to spend one more day. Okay, great. Then let's go one more day and just literally handing every day over to the Lord and being led by peace. That's all I can say because everything else gets really mushy and complicated and that's really what it comes down to in my opinion. It does because even going back to what you said of like, I want to ask this question and God's like, no, yeah, I think that for that cracks me up because I immediately thought of a situation where that happened with me and I just felt the Holy Spirit like, you don't need to ask that. And I was like, okay, yeah, but what I love is you were working on submission with God. Yeah, he was like, wait a second, wait a second, I'm gonna just just keep trusting me, like I'm gonna lead you there, don't worry. And he backed it up by revealing it to you every time you didn't have to force it or break down a door and be like, tell me now or like, get do this. And he was just like, Jenna, I've got it. I've told you before, I brought you this far, you think I'm gonna let you go? No. And that's something that he is so good about. He will prepare you for the situation he's bringing you into and it's so funny and like a little mega church meme, but I'm telling you, he does that. He is, he is our father and he cares so much about those little details that you're like, but God, I really want to know. Or I'm so worried about this thing. He cares just as much about that thing as you do because you are his daughter or his son and he loves you to be like, he wants you to know that he's gonna, he's gonna make a good thing for you. He's not gonna give you something that's subpar. It's always imagining more with him. Yeah, no, like if God's a good father, he's never gonna walk his daughter down the aisle, so to speak, to someone that he did not intend to be a good thing. Like he's just not gonna, he's not gonna do that. But I also hear a lot of girls say things like, oh, I don't know, like I'm not good at picking and just saying awful things about their dating life that just like aren't setting a very good tone at all. And I think one thing that the pastors of my church are so great about is they constantly speak over the church that like, now you guys are gonna fulfill God's purpose on your life and you're gonna marry the right person. And so as a single girl, whenever the thoughts creep in of, oh gosh, what if this isn't right? What if it's supposed to be somebody else or like, is this my person? It's like, oh, well, you know what? We'll figure all that out. But God, thank you that I am gonna marry the right person period. And just absolutely speaking that truth over your life that God's got this, I am not gonna marry the wrong person. I am going to marry the right person. It's a really big deal. Instead of feeding yourself more lies that you don't know how to choose and you're not a good picker and all the guys you end up with are manipulative and bad guys. It's like, no, you have the mind of Christ. You know how to choose and you are not gonna choose the wrong person. And also, your words are so powerful. They are. Why are you cursing yourself? Yes. No, like you said before, take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ. Yes. Make it obedient to you because hello, we're all humans. But if you make it obedient to Christ and what the word says and the word is truth, then you're good. And I feel like we have lost the essence of how powerful our words are and totally. That's another whole thing I could get really bent out of shape on it. I can go for a while on that one. But since we're on the topic of words, I feel like one of the things I've seen you do so well is you're able to be vocal about your beliefs and your views on hot topics with such a boldness. And I think so many of us, because number one, the world's crazy and number two, social media, been really hard for people to be like, I want to stand up for what I believe in, but I'm afraid of backlash. So what are like some tips that are really practical that people can use that you've been able to use in your own life, whether on set or online? Yeah, that's a tough one. And like that one has really hurt my feelings in the past. You know, I think there's a couple things. The first, the primary probably being that I don't answer to people on Instagram. I'm not accountable to those people. I'm accountable to the Lord. And there's things that I've thought about a lot where I'm like, hmm, is that a fruitful thing to speak about? Is that the hill I'm going to die on? And sometimes the answer's no. And sometimes the answer is yes. And so the hill I will always die on is my face. You're not ever going to make me and you're not ever going to intimidate me into shutting that down. So that's the firmest line. And then the other things I just take situated by situation. And you know,
I often find myself thinking like, "Nobody else needs another voice." There's a lot of chatter and a lot of people screaming about who's right and who's wrong and all of that. So nobody really needs to hear my voice in the mix with all of it. And so sometimes I have to decide, is this something that's fruitful to talk about at all? But it can be really intimidating and really hard, especially, especially if you don't have people in your life like great friends that can tell you, "No, you were not out of line there," or like, "No, you probably could have said that more compassionately, great people in your life." That's a really, really big deal because I can probably count on one hand the amount of people who's opinion that I actually deeply care about and I'm going to factor in to my life. And there's a bunch of people on Instagram whose opinion I don't and I can promise you, I'm never going to factor in anybody's opinion who does not have the things in life that I want. People that don't have the kind of marriage that I want are never going to have a voice in my marriage ever or people that don't have the kind of health that I want. They're never going to have a voice in what I eat and what I do and what I eat and they're just never going to have that place. And so I think that's a pretty important part of it to keep in mind is that most of these people that are shouting at me don't have the things that I want in life anyway and don't have the kind of healthy life that I'm looking for anyway. And so their opinion just doesn't get the factor in. And I know that that can sound like really savage and really harsh, but I mean, you would not hire an obese personal trainer. You just would not do that. And so I'm also not going to factor in unhealthy people's opinion into my life because I'm trying to have a healthy life and a faith-filled life. So purely based on obedience to the Lord and that like, no, we're supposed to proclaim his name. It would be a real shame to walk through this life and people go, oh, I didn't know you were a Christian. That is not the call of the Christian life at all. And so people who try to hide behind that and be like, no, I'm a Christian, but gotta appease the world. And like, well, you're going to have to show me the scripture that outlines that that's the call on our life because it's not. And you won't find it. But also just realizing that most of the people that have the loudest opinions are people whose lives I don't want to emulate anyway. Oh man, that is probably the most genius piece advice you could have given because really? No, I'm serious because here's the thing. You want to know there's sort of like a system right to it. And when it's just, oh, like, just be positive, you know, you're like, okay, great. That's not helpful at all. I want a formula. And so if you can almost envision that person's words coming out of their mouth and then looking at do they have things in their life that I want or that I am working towards? No? Okay, well then I probably won't trust their opinion on this thing. Like it just, it's almost like a little, I don't know, like a popcorn maker. It's like, okay, the things go in. What's coming out? Like, what's the fruit of their life? You know, is the fruit of their life? I'm trying to have in my life. And that's, it's simple. Like when you look at it that way and you take all the fluff out of it and the trying to appease everyone, which no one will ever in a million years be able to do anyways, because we're all weak individuals. But it's just really simple, but it's so often overlooked. I think because of how simple it is. So I'm really glad that you phrased it the way that you did because it's actionable. Yeah, it's the stand I've taken where I'm just like, everybody can have an opinion and have the advice they want to have. And that's great. And it all matters. Everyone matters what I'm going to factor in though is wholesome fruit that's not falling apart behind the scenes. Well, and even to your point of being like it's savage, is it really though? Because with all the noise and the constant humming underneath the surface of just the world we live in, the news, social media, your friends and their drama, your family, like yeah, you have to start being kind of for lack of the better word ruthless with what you're allowing in your life and who you're allowing your life and what you're focusing on because you can't focus on everything and you're going to start feeling like you're living in the twilight zone when you start allowing all this stuff. It's just going to be too much and we weren't meant to live that way. And so you really focus on what do I need to look at whose opinion is going to hold water in my life? Right. Things do I want to, you know, better myself and whatever and be very picky about it. Yeah, so it's just it's worth it. Yeah, it is. And I mean, I think I see the extremes all the time where it's like either we're like, oh my gosh, just in constant turmoil over everybody's opinions lying their way. And then there's the otherworldly extreme, which is like get rid of everyone and everything that doesn't serve you and I'm just like why? Like I'm so sorry, we don't all exist to serve you believe it or not. That's actually not how the world works either. And so you can love people and you can appreciate people and value people and still choose not to receive their opinion. That's possible actually. And that is where I think we've lost the balance. But like, of course, we have because a lot of people don't have a biblical worldview where it's like, no, no, I love like I can love you and value you and honor you and appreciate people and have boundaries with people certainly and also not change what I know I'm supposed to do because you don't like it. I'm so glad that you brought up the out of balance thing because I really do feel like it has gotten that way. And again, I think we've also lost a lot about boundaries and what healthy boundaries look like. There are some things that you have to keep for yourself. Like I know one thing that I have appreciated is you're not out there like sharing everything about your marriage where like some people they'll just let all their dirty laundry hang out. And it's like, that's not great because then you're inviting other things into it. And that doesn't mean that you don't love people. It just means that there's certain things that need to stay between you and the people involved. Well, yeah, I mean, I'm so sorry. Not all of Instagram is invited. And the intimate details of my life. And this might sound kind of like, well, that's harsh too. But I do feel like, whoa, when I see people sharing such intimate details about their life, I don't trust that at all. Like I'm never telling you anything about what's going on with me because if you're willing to share that stuff about your life, my stuff is for share fair game, you know. So that's always just really so crazy to me because you're you're giving people who don't know you don't love you don't care about you at all. You are giving them access. And you're foolish to think that you aren't opening a door to factor in the opinions of those people who have literally no vested interest at all. And that is just so crazy to me. But yeah, you can count on me not sharing intimate details. And like, that's just there's a biblical model for that too. Jesus didn't do that with everyone. He had his 12, but then he had his three. It was distinct what he chose to share with the three versus what he chose to share with the 12 versus what he chose to share with the masses. And so if that was the model that like Jesus followed for friendship and doing doing life with people. So then I think that model is probably good enough for me. So it's just so crazy to me when people choose to invite the masses into their intimate moments that sometimes just really need to be protected and guarded and trusted only with people who are going to speak the truth of God over that situation. That's probably the best wrap up for that whole question is number one. Look at the biblical model. Number two, is there fruit echoing the fruit I want my life? Those two things you're set. Yeah, you you are so good. And wrap up, I really want to know about what you and your brother are doing with Boyd Studios because I feel like with the whole like strike and everything happening right now, I feel like a lot of people between that in the 2020 people kind of take these opportunities to kick back and relax. But you guys are taking this time to grow and prepare artists. So number one, how did you come up with the whole idea? And then what are some practical ways people can move forward in their career when they've hit this roadblock and they're like crap, what do I do now? Oh yeah, I mean, first of all, like welcome to the entertainment industry. It's just roadblock after roadblock. And if you're in it long enough, you'll be like, oh, okay, here's this roadblock and it'll be all right. But yeah, I mean, how I all started is that people had asked us since we moved here for a while to do something like a workshop, do a class, something like that. And we always just hesitated at the idea because it's we've always felt like, I mean, yes, collectively the two of us have been doing this for 50 years. But we still feel like we're just learning through all of this. And we just never really wanted to posture ourselves as like, hey, hey, we've got the self-figured outcome learned from us. But people asked enough times. And then with the strike, we were just going, okay, I don't like waiting on someone else to tell me that to give me the green light to be an actor. So maybe we should do
this and maybe we should offer up that kind of environment for other people that want that and don't want to wait around for someone else to tell them that they're allowed to be an actor again. And you know we had a really consistent class we were going to an LA that we loved and I mean just changed our careers completely and so we were just thinking you know what if we were able to provide an environment like that for people here because randomly Tulsa is an Oklahoma generally is just popping off with all the entertainment industry stuff so much is getting filmed here. There's gigantic sound stages getting built here. I don't know what is going on and that happened right after I moved here so I firmly believe it's such a god thing that I was led to come here but yeah we just didn't want to sit on our hands. I think that's pretty much the bottom line and we wanted to offer up an environment where other people who didn't want to sit on their hands had a place to come and it's been so amazing because we just thought like this will be interesting. I mean you know people in Tulsa who this is going to appeal to and experience level people have here and to just start class here and just pull the trigger and do it and see who decided to show up and who has just absolutely blossomed after only a few classes and be like wow I would I'd hire you that person. I mean they walked in here and I was like hmm interesting and now few classes later I'm like I would hire you so that has been really unexpected for us where we thought we would just do it one time and now we're like well we have to keep going with this because we didn't realize that there was such a need for something like that and there's plenty of classes and things going on here but not a lot of people with current experience that are running, acting, education in Tulsa which is hard for us too sometimes because we're like okay I'm glad that there's classes and I'm glad there's things that are being offered here but again it's that thing of like you would not hire an obese personal trainer so like Kate and I are actively in this and like get our butts kicked on a weekly basis in the industry and then we have our victories and all of that and people get to see the victories and they don't get to see us get our butts kicked you know yeah I'm excited all the time and but like we know what it's like to be an actor, a working actor two day and a lot of people here don't and so part of it is that we just felt like we've been given so much and blessed with so much that let's share what we what's helped us with people let's just share it with them and it's been really really fun and just so much unexpected has just come from it where we didn't know how we're rewarding it would be to watch people get better on the other side of things and just really cool so we're passionate about it we're passionate about helping people feel just like they have a safe place to get better because it meant a lot to us to have it when we had it so that's amazing like that is so cool number one how God moved you there for the start of everything that number one is crazy yeah I mean there's all kinds of stuff going on here I mean Martin Scorsese just shot a movie here a couple years ago and there's several shows on TV that are shooting here and I mean so it's it's fully happening here in an Oklahoma city they just built a million square foot soundstage and it's incredible I just had no idea that that was going to happen I moved here six months before the whole world shut down you know remember that yeah and my agent thought I was crazy like my agent and manager thought I was crazy they were like so you're quitting the business it's like well now I'm just gonna go somewhere else and see how that goes and I'll travel when I need to travel and six months later everything went virtual auditions were all self-tapes and I thought like a genius I mean God worked that one out yeah it's it's pretty crazy so we loved also we love Oklahoma like I honestly could not have picked a better place to end up and I mean I out as you can imagine growing up an actor and in Los Angeles I have been to sell many action classes on workshops and things like that and then ultimately found one that was just like wow this is career-changing mostly because it empowered me to decide was that my best worker was it not nobody was giving me a gold star and that was so infuriating to me I was like I need someone to tell me that I did a good job and give me a pat on the back but what I learned is that it's like well no and if anybody out there is wanting to learn or loves the performing arts and whatever is that you have to be super discerning about who to receive instruction from because most people will either tell you what you want to hear because people love to come back and get told what they want to hear because it feels good or they will make you feel so dependent on their opinion that you can never leave and those are not ever going to yield the kind of healthy freeing career where you feel empowered to know what your best is and what it's not you can't it's just not a good situation to end up where you're depending on someone else to give you the thumbs up or the thumbs down you need to have that internal barometer so that's what I would say be wary of is people that just are interested in telling you what you want to hear and tell you like oh you're so great sweetie all the time or people that are so incredibly critical and make you feel like you don't know whether you're good or not because they need to be the stamp of approval yeah I would say that's even good advice for anyone in any career yeah but now where can people find out info about classes and you if they want to follow along with stuff if they're not already following on Instagram what are all the deeds? oh well you can find me on Instagram doing all kinds of weird stuff but it's just Jenna Boyd on Instagram and then Boyd Studios I think it's the boy no maybe just Boyd Studios but yes Boyd Studios one word perfect love that you have my back on that thank you oh you're welcome I'm here to serve and then you know if you care about raw dairy and me fumbling my way through the kitchen there's the unhinged kitchen also the name let's just give a moment for the name but this has been such a fun episode Jenna thank you so much for doing it and sharing really a lot of amazing wisdom on a ton of different topics but like that's what we do here that's what we love so thank you so much for coming on yeah absolutely I've never shared the things that I shared just now on a platform like this so it was really interesting and different and fun to talk about I am so glad and guys make sure you check out her Instagram and Boyd Studios and be sure and check back next week for a brand new episode and I will see you guys then bye
