Were there things about your childhood that you did kind of want to create for your kids and any specific things? You're like, you know what, I want my kids to have this vibe, you know? I feel like they have it already. My daughter is grounded. And so that was the biggest thing. You know, being in Hollywood, you know, you see kids. You be like, oh, man, I saw these kids a day, man. One of these kids-- It's a lot of influences, especially in a big place. Yeah. You know, like you know, I would throw away these places. That thing, like so-- so what I hoped was that Karin Annalise just could feel where I came from. There's no way to mimic it, but they have it. They have this down home. Karin used to joke with me about going to restaurants. That is going to be a big plate and a little bit of food in the middle. She said-- You know, those fancy places, they don't give you the normal portion. The everything is order. It's this big. Everything is order. So she's like, she was just-- She's right, and to me, that's Texas. That's Texas. So that's what they do naturally at. I will say, like, I think part of that was that he did move out of the city. And he lived far away. And then also, when we went to things, like the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards or this, he never big-timed anybody. We were fans. We went up to everybody. We got pictures. We got this. And it never felt like, oh, this is an exciting, fun thing. But we have regular lives. And so I feel like we just-- We always felt normal. So yeah, what was it like for you, Grotto? You grew up in LA, and you know, when did you know your daddy was like, oh, my daddy didn't Fox. It took me a while, because when I was younger, I didn't see a lot of this stuff, because it was rated R. Yeah. So I didn't see it. And then-- [LAUGHTER] [INTERPOSING VOICES] But when I went to the Oscars with him, I was 10 years old when he was nominated for Ray. And won for Ray, and we was going up. And won for Ray. That was-- I was sitting there looking up at him, and I was like, OK, this is a big deal. He's a big deal. That was honestly the same. And I know it's totally different what I'm about to say, but it was like when Barack Obama became president. Like, literally, when you and I will never get when you won that Oscar, Jamie. It was crazy, and it was-- it was-- I had to be careful, because-- I'm going to get a little history. It was-- I was about to blow it. What you mean? Baby, it's this geeky poem, yeah. I am, by every definition, a lot. My outfits are a moment. My reactions are, I've been called dramatic in three different group chats this week alone. And every single time, I said, correct. Jamie, she called me on the phone. I said, who's it? Jamie Foxx. You know what she's saying is real. Jamie Foxx. So she was, she was saying, Jamie, she said, Jamie, she said, you're blowing it. I said, what do you mean? She said, you're going to lose this thing because you keep going crazy. So she said, you keep. So she says, I want to take you so much. She took me to Quincy Jones house in another black council. Hey, man, man, you're blonde. You got to go on there and do the right thing. You're not going to lose this thing. You're out there partying and doing whatever, man, you got to get together. You see, and you know, I was in Quincy House. You see on the wall, man, that's Michael Jackson 54 million records. Jamie, you know that. You know, Erscher, don't you? You know, Erscher. So they take me to Quincy Jones house and it's all these black actors and actresses from like the 60s and the 70s. I grew up with and they all shook my hand and said, Hey, we're counting on you. Oh my gosh, Jamie. So then Oprah says, okay, are you ready to meet the person that you need to talk to us yet and standing over in the corner with Sydney 48? I knew it. I knew it. There was only one person it could be. So I go up to Sydney 48 and he goes, I saw you one time. You were at a party. Do you remember that? I was like, yeah, I want to give you something. When I saw your movie, oh my god, my soul grew. I'm giving you one thing, responsibility, responsibility of your work and then I weeped and then Oprah came and then Gail was there, oh Jamie, Jamie Oprah, Jamie, Jamie Oprah is ready. Jamie, Jamie, Jamie, it's not. It's not. Kiki, you're so great. I wish I could come on your show and work with you. You're so great, you're so great. Jamie, you're ridiculously great. Did they ever deter you? No, I just think he is so naturally like this. Like, this is him all the time. He's not just on because we're on the show. No, he's like this in the car. He's like this would wake up in the morning. He's like this at all times. And so I mean, I love it. I'm also numb to it. Yeah, yeah, because it's your dad. This is just him. But I feel like in high school, I was more so when I bumped against it. Yeah, because I made a mistake. She was in school and I don't know if she remembered this, but I had a Rolls Royce drop head. And I went to go, I went to go pick her up. And she wouldn't get in the car because it was too much. I put it up and I was like, look, the top go back. Come on. The top go back. She's like, man, if you don't get the ****. That is so cute. It was just because you feel like it put too much spotlight on you. Like what was the vibe of it? Yeah, I don't know. I think when you're in high school, you want to blend in. That's like the time when you just want to you don't want to stand out. And he stands out. But I grew out of that. We were out of that. So what was the turning point for you being little Korean going to the Nickelodeon events, going to all the places with your dad. We've seen each other so many places to saying, you know, I'm not just hanging with my dad at these events. I actually want to be into the business. What was the kind of flip that switch? Yeah, there was, I for a long time was like, I don't know if I'm going to get into it. I don't know. And then I was sitting in a cubicle in New York City working a nine five job and advertising firm. And I looked out the window and I said, I don't want to do that. And I really had always wanted to be in the entertainment industry. But I just never allowed myself to really go for it. Sure. And so as soon as I did, we did the show and Vichazam and then just things kind of snowballed from there. But I feel like I had to like really choose it for myself. Yeah. I had to be my choice. And congratulations you guys on Shazam. It's literally 100 episodes. 100 episodes. And you guys have given away, was it over 10 million dollars? Yeah, of my own money. And I want it back. No, I'm just kidding. What was that like jumping into that with your dad working with him every day? Because obviously you had acted before. But then now you're going to be literally hosting a show with him. I love this show because I feel like this is the truest version of him because he gets to do comedy, sing, dance, like do everything. And so this felt so natural for us to do. And we have like, I think people see themselves in our relationship in the way we, you know, like, okay, dad, you're the whole thing. And so it just felt so easy, so easy. And it's such a rewarding gig. I mean, you do, you do a show, you do password? Yes, I do password. Yeah. And it's my dream for Leo to be doing something with me. So I love watching y'all. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Like, I would be so sad if Leo didn't want to be in entertainment. It would be really, really break my heart. How long is he? He's three. Oh, come on. Was it ever a point in your career, though, where people were like, you're doing, you're doing too many things. Yeah. I mean, of course, because when we first started, you know, I played the most recognizable woman character on TV with Wanda. So imagine being Wanda, like, hey, for real? Oh, girl, I'm doing all this. And but I wanted to do the music. So, so I remember being dressed. I got the tits on the ass, whatever. And, uh, info, info is. Yeah, started. Yeah. So that's info. Yeah. So I'm like, I'm gonna shoot my shot. Period. But I got to, I got to guard on everything. So I like so, uh, I'll go for it or cut. So what we doing, they like, they like, please, I ask you, y'all don't want to go out? Uh, no, we don't. So I said, we're damn. So, so that was one thing. And then I remember Teddy Riley came to the living color. I got the tits on in the ass again. Come on, Teddy. And I, I finished doing my thing, but Teddy about to leave so I grabbed my, uh, demo tape. And I run it. Mind you, Teddy ain't see me. I wasn't on the show. - Just scared. - I'm running down the hallway as Wanda with my take on the Teddy. And I said, "Teddy, man, I'm Jamie Foxx, "I do music, he says, man, impossible." Everybody's at this little small house. - It's in Atlanta, where we at? - No, no, I'm in LA. I had a little two bedroom house, but everybody would come there, right? So, at this one party, it was puff, it was Missy, it was everybody. And then, standing on the wall, this how long ago, standing on the wall was a guy named Jay-Z, nobody knew. Standing here at a little green, tracksoo jacket on the party, it's crazy. I said, "Yo, I know you." He said, "Nice party." It's crazy. We started off at Marcie Projects. Dame had an idea, she said, "We're doing the music." Then we started to store it at the clothing line, you know, Marcie, and then I met Beyoncé. (laughing) So, - What the hell is that? - Yeah, so Jay-Z right there, and I go in my garage, 'cause I had my cheap look at it, I put in my good liquor bottles. And when I'm coming out, it's a tall guy, and a shorter guy goes, "Yo, Bey, it's like this all the time, "like people singing karaoke." And I said, "Yo, who are you?" He said, "With the neptons, my name is Ferrell." - Oh my gosh! - Later on, and what I-- - I'll get this piece so happy. (laughing) - So, what I would do is I would throw parties and invite musical people, 'cause I was trying to get into the music. - Come on now. - And I had a studio, and then, "Enwalk this dude, jaw busted." - Oh, I know what this is. - Backpack, Kanye. - So, Kanye says, "I got a song, dad, dad, "that I think you'll be good on." I wanna play, I said, "Come on, we going to back in my studio." And he says, "She said she wants some Marvin Gaye." So, move the fans, I'm gonna stop, they won't let us play. - No, I says. But when he's trying to teach me the song, you know, I'm from R&B, so I said, "Hey, I got it." Let me put, I said, "She saying she wants some Marvin." He hit the button, he says, "What you doing?" I said, "Well, you know, I'm R&B, I gotta put the R&B." He said, "Don't do that." He said, "Just sing the song, you know, like the hip." And so, this is the honest. In my mind, I'm like, "Oh, you don't know what he's talking about." - Right. - I gotta put the R&B. So, I begrudgingly sing the song, I leave for like eight weeks and do a bad movie. I come back. - What's the bad movie? - I ain't even gonna talk about it. - I gotta find it. So, I come back from the bad movie, still, still. I come back from the bad movie and I'm in Miami with Breon. And Breon said-- - No, wait, who's Breon? - Breon, the dude who hooked all my music stuff for. - Gotcha. - So, Breon said, "You remember that song?" You said, "What the fuck is it?" It's number one in the country, 'cause I was in Australia shooting. I said, "What?" And we're in Pre-Vay in Miami. And he, it's three in the morning. He tapped the DJ on the shoulder and said, "Are you gonna hold on now?" - I ran to the booth full throttle. It's there, "Gradamite, that's me." That's me. And so, that's how the music birthed, but it came at a time where people that weren't old enough to have seen and live in color. - Interesting. - Was just like, "Oh, that's the dude that sings with ya." And then it was a hit song. And so then things started to open up. And now, just like yourself, when we look at you, those doors being open now, you are busting them wide open. And so now, not only do I, not only have I benefited from it, but we now all benefit and we can do whatever we wanna do. - Man, I mean, you're the one. When I think about that stand-up show, when you went to, and you did, Luther Vandross, you did, ♪ Losers, I'm setting, I'm setting ♪ ♪ Play there ♪ - Dad, what, how did you, I just have to know, because it is so difficult not only to create a stand-up show, but to do one as original as yours. I mean, me and my friends sit back and pull that up and watch, and watch, and watch. How you could just pull off being so cool, and so funny, and then so on and cuff. Like, you have to tell me, what was that process of putting it together? - It was my grandmother made sure I learned music, but what was my secret sauce was, throwing music into my comedy. So when I first got to LA, you got to say, "Y'all, y'all," it was 1987, 1988. So when I was doing a stand-up, I saw all the comedians that you know right now, DL, DL, the Wands that rock everybody, but the difference was I would put music into my joint. So I'd never get, I went to a college for classical piano. So I was singing, you know, (singing in foreign language) So I would do, so now Snoop has a song out, and I would take that on stage and say, what if Snoop had a song? What if Snoop's gin and juice was opera? - Yeah, yeah. - And he'd be like, "Rolling down the street, "smoking Nendor, sipping on gin and juice, "thud juice with my mind on my money, "and my money on my mind be arch." So now I started putting all of the music stuff in anybody that I could do in impersonation, just into the music. So I would couple it with what you were referring to when I was young, my grandmother wouldn't let me listen to no R&B stuff. So I would listen to songs on TV, like "The Brady Bruns" and change it into some R&B, here's a story of a lowly lady. - Yes! - You know what I'm saying? - Yes! - So then I would take all of the people that I know how to do in impersonations of. - Ah. - And then put them in. - So with Luther was like, ♪ Still in love ♪ ♪ I'll say ♪ (laughing) - You know that? So then it was like, here's what I tell you, Kiki, and you'll notice, the stuff that I did at the lunch table as a kid ended up being a pay off as I got grown. It's just fifth grade, third grade, this is all I was doing. So now to be able to do it on this level, it's I would try to do this because I had to disrupt Tommy Davidson. I had to disrupt the wins. I had to let him know, I had to separate myself with the music. And then there was a situation. I know DL Hugo remembers this. - Uh-oh. - I'm walking? No, no, no, no, no, it's a good story. I'm walking, this is when I ain't no nobody in LA. I'm just doing my thing. I don't have no crew. This one gang members, everything was, everything. I ain't no nobody. So I'm just doing my (beep) so I'm walking to this comedy club and all the comedians come outside. It's a man you cheating. I said, what? - What? - Yeah man, you singing man and you ain't supposed to be saying, I said, oh my (beep) I didn't know it was a comedy union. (laughing) - It's a live rock. - It said, well you wouldn't be funny if you wasn't singing. I said, I said, so and this deal buddy Lewis, they was jamming me up, but I was, he was fans of them. - Why? - So I'm going to the comedy club to do my set. I don't sing. I do 25 minutes of that high (beep) and people going crazy. I said, wait, wait, wait, wait. I just wanna know, did I sing the night? And some girls, I'm, we waiting, I said, no, no, no. - We waiting. - Somebody told me outside that I wasn't funny unless I sung. And so I'm not gonna say that it was like, well I knew it when (beep) just went up. (laughing) So when I came outside, D.O. said, man, that was brilliant. Buddy, they gave me my props. - What's up? - But what they did was they forced me to sharpen the comedy so that the music was just a cherry on top. So that they still, I'm still how I'm like, but then the music was just something that I would lay on it. It wasn't, in other words, if comedy's a banana split, this was just the musical whipped cream, you know what I'm saying? - I mean, I'm hearing like brave authenticity, growing up, watching your dad, both creatively seeing his work, but then up close and personal, what did you learn and take for him in terms of the work ethic? I can only imagine, you know? - I mean, his work, I mean, I would say more so what I took from him is his dedication to his family because he worked my entire childhood, but he always showed up. And so I still don't really know how you balance that, Dad, because they would call my mom from the Jamie Fox show and say, please don't tell Jamie about Karin soccer game because we need him on set, and if you tell him, he's gonna leave set. Like, he was so dedicated to being present, showing up, I never looked out in the crowd at like a recital and he wasn't right there. And so I'm still like amazed at how he was able to do that. And so I feel like those are the values that he's instilled in me. - And what was it like being on set? 'Cause I know you were on the Jamie Fox set back in the day. - I was, I was a little baby. - Yes, you look at the flowers, the flower girl. in the hundredth episode. - Amazing. - I remember that, and it was my first time acting, and I didn't know you had to do more than one tape. - Oh yeah, I even had you up there doing it a million times. - So I went down, I threw all the flowers, and they said, "Okay, put 'em back in the baskets." - Oh, I just did it. - I did it y'all, but yeah, I was in a little episode. - That was here, I come here. ♪ I come here, I come ♪ ♪ I'm on the left, here's the need ♪ ♪ You know, let's listen ♪ - Yes! ♪ Take it down and if you want me to ♪ ♪ Yes, you're like a show ♪ - You're a universe, man. - Yo, how did you pull that off? You come from, I live a color, then you executive produce, you put on your own show, you found a way to put the singing and the acting and the comedy together, and give yourself a bit of a narrative. Like, what was the, how'd you do that? - I didn't have, I never had a white boss. I know that sounds weird. I never had a white boss when it came to my artistic expression. - Break that down for a bit. - My, meaning this, all the authenticity came from this black dude from New York. His name was Kenanarri Wayne. So Kenanarri Wayne, yeah, so when I, when I, I imagine going on to the set of "In Living Color," so I go on to the set of "In Living Color," it was all black, everything that tripped me out. It was black writers, it was black performers. I smell somebody, I said, "What's that?" She said, "I smell the chicken." I said, "What's that?" The craft service, and Kenan said, "It's how I run it." So, from that, I never had to second guess anything, and everything that we did was water cooler. And Kenan said, "This is what I'm gonna teach you. If you ain't great, don't do it." He said, "If you ain't, it's because there's a black performer. If you're not great, you're not." I said, "But he said because we gon' grade you harder." So on in "In Living Color," it was 23 minutes of programming. And Kenan ran the (beep) to the point to where, he was tough, but he had to be, 'cause imagine, first of all, I'm funny as (beep) I was the eighth funniest person. Tommy Davidson. David, I'm in career. Kelly Covefield, all 39 wins. I mean, it was just Jim Carey. Jim Carey. You know what I, so having Kenan teach me how to be serious about comedy. We would come in and be like, "Man, Kenan, man, the writers ain't writing good enough." Kenan, "No, they writing good." Y'all just lazy, get on your feet. (screams) And he would work everything out. And he said, "Don't ever sell anything short, get it all." So by the time I got to the Jamie Fox show, I was actually wound up too tight. Because I was wound up too tight, because everybody on in "In Living Color" was a killer. - Yeah. - While on the Jamie Fox show, these were young ladies and men who had never done this. So I was like, get everything. And so I had to teach them. I had to teach Racksdon. I had to teach Garsell how to get to it, right? But because Kenan Ivy Wands taught me the way to preserve the funny in a black way, it's just, it reverberated to everything. And so that way, when I was on it, I said, "No, I know this works." Because when you would get a note, I said, "No, I know Kenan taught me this." And Kenan made that, I hope he gets a chance to see this because we haven't spoken a long time. But he really taught me something that I hold to this, I tell her, to this day, I know how to get it. I know how to get it. I say, "My heart just ain't great." But I know how to execute it. And that came from a black family in New York who was doing crazy numbers and birthed JLo, Jim Carrey, every time, I mean, everybody, and then when we got to the Jamie Fox show, the first. So Kenan Ivy Wands said, "We're gonna do a halftime show." Like, what'd you mean? He said, "During the halftime show, they got this bull***." We gonna do our show. And that was the first ever, ever having. So I learned from someone great who was fearless in our business, Kenan didn't take no ****. And what I mean by that is, and I hope I can speak freely on this. You can, yeah. Kenan in Hollywood, at that time as a black man, that was unheard of. Yes. And what I mean is, Kenan has a **** where it's going his dress room. But he had two big security guards in front of his dress room. Big black dudes from New York. OK. So people will come up, the network will come up to give notes. And the big dude said, "What's that?" No, Kenan, I see anybody right now. But we were with the network. We were with the network. Yeah, I get all that, but Kenan, I see nobody right now. Could you let, now we're not doing that. And so they would make the network stand over here. And Kenan, Kenan, you know, Kenan 6'4. Yeah. So you **** would walk out, **** clothes on, **** walk right past them. They couldn't give him no notes. And all that **** you saw was him pushing the envelope and pushing and pushing. At one point, we were doing the sketch where I had a dead dog. And animal rights was like, yo, you got to get a faker dog. 'Cause he looked too real. He looked too real. So Kenan had a fake dog, and he would put in, it didn't look like a dog. But while they were there washing, the dog, and they leave, he put, I mean, he was just, he was just, and then something got funky, because he was too powerful. He was too powerful. Something got funky, and they snatched the show from him. I wonder how that happened. I don't know. I got to talk to Kenan, maybe want to talk to him. Yeah, but what happened, what happened? They self kind of, I don't know if they self syndicated. So it was weird. I don't know, I don't know. But I just know it got funky. And then all of a sudden, he leaves the show. So when I got to the Jamie Foxx show, and we hired all of these writers. I see a dude, a brother, I said, man, you funny man, come write on my show. He said, I don't know how to turn on a computer. We'll help you with that. But I need that kind of, I need that kind of funny. And so we would teach him how to do it. And then we needed, then we needed a, we needed a, we needed a woman's point of view. A black woman's point of view. So I hired Mara Brock. Mara Brock a kill. No, that's crazy. Mara Brock is on the show, and I told all the dudes, I said, hey, man, there's too much dudes going, too much testosterone in here. Too much dudes. And Mara came in and leveled that (beep) and then she went on to do everything. She did. - I mean Mara's on it. - It all came from the Jamie Foxx show. And now to be honest, at that time, they did try to shake us. Because once we started doing our (beep) you get the phone calls. We want to go in a different direction. Where's that? - Yeah. - Well, we want to go here and go, that's not, no, no, no, no, no. And they want to replace everything. - Well, they talk a lot about you. There's a lot of, you SSA is on YouTube, or even people do articles about that. About the era of that network of UPN, of all those shows that built those networks. They were black shows. And then once all the advertisers have come in, then suddenly you want to move in a new direction where you don't want the shows that got the eyes to remain. - Yeah, I said, well, wait a minute, man, we're doing numbers, so I stuck to my guns. And I won't discuss what all happened behind the scenes, but it was tough. But what was great about it was, we did it on our own merit, and it was amazing. And I look at tomorrow all the time, I'm like, man, that's crazy. - You both, I mean, that's just insane. - Yeah, so that, so I hope I wasn't too, well. - You were so eloquent. (laughing) - I wouldn't have done that when you didn't. - No, I wouldn't have done it when you didn't. I want to tell you this. The Black Panther was always here. - So, Corinne, obviously you create your acting, but you run the production company. - I do. - That's totally different than how to perform it. Performing is one thing, but then when you make in these decisions, like your dad said, you're finding what the right material is, what let you know that you wanted to get that deeper to the business? - I feel like he always saw it for me. I feel like I've been on both sides of the camera for salt my whole life. - Yeah. - And I started as a writer, I started writing, and then it just kind of naturally grew into producing. But when he, you know, when I got this new role as the head of the company, which was in February, the first month, I really felt that pressure of like, I want to take his ideas and put them on the screen. I want to bring them to life. We have people now that their livelihood depends on the success of this. And so I really took it so seriously. And now I feel like I've grown into the role. But it was a, you know, it's a big responsibility. - It is for me myself, you know, it's always entertaining and moving even more as I'm getting older into, you know, this is the Kiki Palmer company, not just Kiki Palmer, the talent. This is I have KTV, I practice by Palmer, I have my wellness, and so I really feel you girl, we need to like have lunchtime and just get into it because it's like, there's no way to know how to do it other than to do it. - Just to jump in, you just jump in. - Yeah, yeah. - But what has it been for you to see her taking on this? - Rint of. - Okay. - We're in a f**k. We're in a f**k. At the meet name going right back up, what are we talking about? 'Cause we need to, I love that. - I love that. - And then I'll probably, she don't want me to tell you that. We as a meet, it was a big group, she said, are we gonna get to, what is, what are we talking about? I said yes for, and she-- - Have to do that. - But, but it's a natural thing. And I don't, look, it's on her, but she laughing right now, but in the meeting, she's like, and then this is what she does. She'll get a under bite. - This is what he says. What is it? - It looks like. - No, she'll get her underbarred. If she ain't feeling she'll go. - Uh-huh. - She'll do this, look. Like, she'll be like this. You know, hi, hi, hi. And then that (beep) sound right, she go. (screams) - She will turn into Lebron. - I don't know. - She'll turn into Lebron James, you be like. - You don't feel like you do that. You don't feel like that. - She does, she turned into Lebron James, you be like this. - I don't have a poker face. I guess I don't have a poker face. - You can't play poker, 'cause when you don't like a (beep) you be like, this is the book. - We was at a dinner, we was at a dinner, she just said, "I gotta go, I gotta go." But what it does, it makes whoever that she's meeting with get to the business. - That's right. - And she says, "Dad, I don't wanna be," she said this ain't being socialized, that's good. - Do you recognize her? - And she's soaked. - In her or do you feel like she's tough of you? - I would say she's tough of me when it comes to that. I'm (beep) Come on, man, I got ADD and HD. - I can't. - Annie. - Yeah, me. - Annie, you scared me. - I'm just gonna (beep) - Great, she nailed the (beep) if it ain't going, she out and, can I speak on it? - I don't know what you're gonna say. - She's already, she's already sold a major show. - Yeah, we are, we are, we are really tough going on. - Oh my gosh! - She's trying to say, we, she sold a major show. And I was like, "What can you give me, what can you tell me without giving me your press release?" - We have, yeah, we have a really big show that we can't not talk about. And how do you know what something's going to sell? - I know it's frustrating for creatives, but I feel like drilling it and getting it tight, people have very short attention spans. - Yeah. - And you can tell on a Zoom when people, they just start-- - Glating. - And then they're looking at other things on their computer and they're like, we lost them. So I think having it tight and engaging in when you have Michael Ealy on, it's really hard. - It's packaging. - Yeah, it's really hard to not be engaged. - Yeah, but she be on the ass. What she trying to say is-- - I'm not a type. - I would be honest. She be on the ass, they be uncomfortable. Hey, man, have you heard this thing that they're doing Quentin Tarantino's doing? It's called the Django or something like that? That's all right. (laughing) That's not my teller. - Everybody kept saying that Jango. - Hey, man. This Django thing. So I said (beep) I don't know what it is, but if it's Quentin Tarantino, it's gotta be tough. So I was in the running for Django 'cause I was in the middle of switching my management around. So I didn't know none about Django, but I heard that a lot of people was up for it. One, Will Smith. But Will was like, "Yo, so we're here." And so it's Django and when I went there to talk to QT, I was like, "Yo, so as a slave." Yo, (beep) I was like, "Would you talk about?" I said, "Will, you have to play it." "Yo, but a slave, nah, nah, we're there." I said, "You gotta do it." So he passed. Now, I'm doing a show like in Maryland or some in all of a sudden, Idris Elba is in backstage. And he saw that, you know, Quentin Tarantino was, Quentin Tarantino mentioned this movie. (laughs) "Quentin Tarantino knows where I play Slive." I'm a Slive and then I get raped and so on. And I was just raped and I said, "Man, ain't gon' rape you." I said, "Well, I could imagine your big beautiful black ass on that goddamn horse with your shirt off." Well, you know, you really don't know if all shit do. I said, "All right, (beep) so he passed." So now, it's my turn. (laughs) My man even hooked me up and it was fun. I switched my management and I went into my agency. And when I went to my new agency, they were like, "Jami, the suppress start is here." What do you feel about playing a slave? I said, "Man, what the (beep)?" I just, man, it's a no, no, no, no, no, no. Django, I said, "Oh, I heard about it." So now, I go to Quentin Tarantino House, but I know it's a, it's a, it's a Western. I bring my horse. Ah! Now that's what I'm talking about. It's multi-faceted. My horse is parked outside while I'm doing the thing. But the performance has begun. Yeah, I'm doing my thing in there and I said, "QT, you know what?" I know you're looking at a lot of people, man, but I just wanna let you know I got my own horse. What? My horse is in your driver. You have your own (beep) horse? What the (beep) Did you put a horse in my house? What do you mean? There's a (beep) horse? I said, "Yeah, man, right outside." So I go outside, "What the (beep)?" And without showing my horse, I said, "QT, I know everybody trying to get on, but I think Django in his horse is a real thing. It's gotta be, it's gotta be some energy." I said, "What's crazy is my horse? Look just like your stunt horse. You just gotta paint a shoes white." So Quentin calls my new manager, Rick Yorn. Hi, man, I don't know what this Jamie Foxx is selling, but I'm buying it. (laughs) And so that's how I got known. And so a lot of people, too, what you just, those incredible impressions, they were scared of that script. People were scared of the Django, of the slave, of everything with it, of the satire. Is this humorous? The same role that you know, everything was spooky about it, as an actor and as a performer. What, just like what you were saying that you said, [BLANK_AUDIO] - What you said is interesting. - When you're trying to say no, watch me. It's ripe, I get ripe, there's ripe. - We've seen all these scenes. Was it you, how did you come and say, this is how this needs to be done? - I'm gonna be very, I'm gonna be, first of all, we had a great leader, Quentin Tarantino, and one thing Quentin said, when we were talking about the dynamic of the movie, Quentin says, hey man, I'm not gonna hide behind my (beep) I'm not gonna hide, I'm not gonna throw you to the, so he says, I'm gonna stand in front of this. However, when it came to certain things, when it came to us, I said, QT, I wanna bring somebody to the set on the most horrific day. It was Kathy Hughes, who does Radio One. So Kathy Hughes comes to the set, that's him, that's him, I want you to watch this scene, and this was the scene where the dogs were ripping apart this lake, Miss Hughes wept, and she says, this is a movie that's necessary. She says, I will make sure on Radio One, 'cause she touched 98% of black people, that this is a movie we need to watch, and in return, Quentin did Kathy Hughes's interview show, so he was nice enough to do her show. So there was certain checkpoints where I go like, and I hope he doesn't mind me saying like, 'cause what I was telling, what I was telling will, and it just, I said, man, all the stuff that I know about Quentin, what he put in his script, he don't shoot that. But what he put in his script, he don't always shoot that. So the movie is gonna be different, and then of course some of that stuff, you ain't gonna be able to do no way, but you gotta be vocal, and not be afraid, if you read the script, broom-hilder, and Django get raped. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, oh yes. But once we got together, Quentin and I, and Carrie, we wanted to protect Carrie Washington. Why, because movies are forever. Meaning that if there is some bombastic scene, you can't take it out, and it's forever. - And you can click it out of context. - And we wanted to make sure that we protected Olivia Pope. And at that time, that television show wasn't out yet, but I said, hey, she's gonna have this show, and we wanna protect her, and he was with it. So all of that sort of outlanded stuff left, and then certain things, this is the only, I'll only say this because we have a great leader. I said, QT, when I read the script, the only thing that I see is Django, he ain't trying to cure slavery, but he loves his woman. So right now in the script, his woman ain't in there enough, all he wanna do is I want my woman back. He'll kill anybody, black green, red, blue, and green, just to get his woman back. So if we're able to increase that and then quit and go say, yeah, it's an omelette. It's an omelette, and all these ingredients, and I'm gonna throw some more of Room Hilded. So in the movie when you watch it, those scenes where Kerry Washington is sort of in his eyes, that wasn't in the script. He placed Kerry Washington to make sure it was a through line, so that Django, it was a guy about going to get love in the worst circumstance. So therefore when people watch it, it's like, oh man, he's on the journey to get his girl. 'Cause if you look, when the first girl's, when he's a John Brittle, I like how you die, boy, pull him, he shoots him. He don't go untied a girl that was being whipped. - Yeah. - That's not his thing. I'm going to get my girl. So in moments like that, QT was so accommodating. - Well, he was, to your point, a good leader. A good leader respects the people that he put in place. What it could be dicey? 'Cause it said, man, if you don't get the, I'm gonna see my, but I was very old. - But you rolled the dice, and I think that's what artistry is. And whenever I get a chance to sit up and have a conversation with an icon like yourself, the main thing I want to be able to pull out is how to apply myself. And for anybody, you get into these positions, right? Whether you are an actor or you're an entrepreneur, whatever you're in, you suddenly, when you're asked, or when you're brought in as a collaborator, you forget to speak up. People forget to speak up. They forget to take their expertise and make the material or whatever it is they're doing better. And that's what you brought. - Oh, man. Well, you know what? I was so appreciative. And then on that movie, some go get us. - Yeah. - Me and Christoff Walsh, we worked for six weeks by ourselves. And then Samuel Jackson, and then Leonardo DiCaprio, walked on that set, smoking a vape, walking in slow motion. I said, he's (beep) ready to go. And people don't realize the leo do, he ain't no (beep) - He said the leo do. - He not know joke when it come to his craft. Like you see him on the boat. South of France, the models at the number when he come in there. And this (beep) me up. He came in, he taller than me. So, he taller than me. So when you have a first, you know, rehearsal, he turn around and he, like this, I'm just curious. And he blow the smoke in my face, and I went, (coughing) So during the rehearsal, he, everything, I can't beat him. (beep) He taller than me, he blow the smoke in my face, and then it's (beep) killing me. So, I went to the wardrobe, people I say, Miss Lady, I need you. I need you to put four inches in my boot when I do this scene. She's right there, no, no, no, not until the camera come on. She's why, I said, don't worry about it. I just need four inches. - You gonna point. - Man, when I turn around, I'm like, yeah. (beep) So, (beep) Jane Gao, how are you mean? (laughing) And he was like, but you had to do certain (beep) because they was coming. - Yes, you. - Sam and Jackson, forget about it. - Yeah, he was. - No, no, no, no, no. - I know. - No, no, no, on the set, better than everybody. - I know. - And he was in and out. Say action. - Action. - Mass or a camera, use the mask. - Cut. - What? So how was that? (laughing) - And me and Leo, he was just (beep) and he's like, "Man, I said I can't use a mask, (beep) so you cut." - What y'all think about that? - And Leo goes and he says, "He's (beep) I say yes. - He is a (beep) - As in all of that. It was so, we were cooking one day, so I won't say who it was, but we were all cooking so much on the scene. - Yeah. - There was a guy who only had like maybe one line. He couldn't get it out. - Ah. - Because it was, you know. - It was hot. - It was hot. - And Samuel Jackson, (laughing) you'd better have your (beep) - I'm so scared. - 'Cause said. - Say that (beep) (laughing) - Say it. - And I was like whoa. And the dude was a (beep) He was a say it. (laughing) 'Cause said, Sam, Sam, you couldn't beat Sam. - Oh my god, yeah. - And I did certain things just to try to get on Sam's level. (laughing) 'Cause Leo couldn't say the inward when we first started rehearsing. He was like, pal, like, come on, pal. - I can't say that, pal. And Sam was gonna say that (beep) just another Tuesday. (beep) Say that (beep) Sam was crazy. Crazy, Sam was going crazy with it. And then. - Powerful man. - And one point, Sam will make sure that he knew, Sam let everybody know he's the one. So I had to do some (beep) I had to do some (beep) I apologize. Now I'm still too. We're doing the read through Sam cooking us some, some man of (beep) all that (beep) is what they said, you heard me in (beep) all that. You ain't the only (beep) Yeah, that's a new sheriff in town. (beep) - Uh-huh. - And I'm saying, with this ain't in the script, man of (beep) all that, man. Everybody's running scared from you. You ain't nobody scared of you. And then Sam goes, (laughing) Okay. - Yes. - And then Leo's like, what was that? I said, I gotta try to do something. And then that sent me up because later on, - Oh no. - Black man cooked me. And it wasn't no words. We were supposed to be staring at each other. So, Quentin was like, okay, you and Sam have your sterile. I looked at Sam, Sam said. (beep) (laughing) And Quentin was like, can you say, I'm trying. Action. And then after the, and they said cook. Sam was like, (laughing) Sam, how was he Sam? - Yeah. (beep) Yeah, he was like, any day this is the best. - The best. - Yeah. - I mean, you have this doubly. Anytime you're running a production company, you are thinking about the legacy of this production company. But then also, you are the legacy of your father. What would you want it to be? Like, when you're thinking about what you're building, what do you see for the future of this production company of your dad's legacy that you're going to be carrying out? You ain't your little sister's family's big question. - I know. - And it's great you ask it because it's something I think about every day. And I thought about when I was given this position, I thought about what is the pillar. First of all, who is Jamie Foxx? That I know, but also that the people love. What do they want to see from him? And then also, what don't they expect? And so, I mean, we came up with like words that like, are the ethos of who he is, entertainer, universal, like all of those kind of words. But I feel like the things that we've been gravitating towards lately have been kind of the left of center things. - Yeah. - The things that aren't so commercial. And so, I feel like that's the kind of stuff that we want to do. - Yeah, to continue to double down on what he's always been. - Yes. - Which is out of the box. - Yes, like he made that stage. - So now people know what that is. Like, people see when I'm coming in, somebody like myself coming in, they know the blue. print it what it is. So continuing to push that forward. I think that's totally in line with what your dad has always done for sure. And we cannot wait to try to talk to you. We were talking about men. It is very rare to see a talent like yourself to where you know I equated to this. Sometimes you'll see people and they only are that in front of the camera. Or they only are that singing the song. But to see it, to see you have it all the time and it's measured. It's like I'll watch you. I'll say, oh, you gear down, you gear up, you gear down. And then when you go to your seriously or moments, and then when it's when it's this and so we go like, man, how do we, how do we make sure that we pour everything into you and then lay everything at your feet and be like, man, have a look at and we're not going to bring you know. Oh my God. We're not going to have you looking like a. Oh, yeah, yeah. Okay, you know. All right. It's the sideline. Because we've had some meetings where people brought, we'd be like, and she's like. She turned, she turned into. She turned into LeBron. Yo, I mean, we have to talk about the fact of what you guys overcame. I mean, that was incredible. Obviously you suffered a brain bleed, which was. I mean, we all was just like, we can't lose Jamie. But I can only imagine what it was like for you as his actual daughter, and then the family being together. So what was that time? Like I know you said, it was your aunt, it was your aunt Deb. I did your aunt. She's me on Deedra. Yeah, on Deedra release. Yeah, they had found out something was wrong. Yeah. Yeah. It's it was it was really crazy. Yeah. Yeah. It's you know, in my mind, my dad, talk about as little as much as you want. Yeah. Yeah. I ain't pulling. I don't pull. No, it wasn't. It wasn't it wasn't that it was. It was it was me like. I was talking to you. I was a bro. What are you talking about? It was me, bro. Like I put the smiles on people's faces. Why me? And look at all these bad people out here. And he said, those bad people already belong to somebody else. He says, this is your time. And I said, and it was so. You just couldn't you couldn't imagine like I like when I finally came to my sense of what happened? I said, you had a stroke. I couldn't I couldn't get I couldn't make sense of it. And I remember the parts I do remember like the rehab part was frustrating because I'm like, they said you got a second chance. It's the second chance. What's wrong with my first chance? This doesn't happen to anybody. How does that happen to me? It's a funny though. Like, they couldn't do wellness checks on me because I only had comedy to lean on. So I was just funny. I was always joking all the time. So when they come and say, who are you today, sir? And I was somebody different. Who are you today? Damn it's crazy. I'm Dave Chappelle. Somebody said I had a stroke. Damn it's crazy. It's no way Dave Chappelle. But even when you got admitted, they asked you what your name was and you said Denzel Washington. Not because he didn't know who he was because he's playing around. So that's what you're telling me, huh? Okay. So you're telling me I had a stroke. And they don't know if he okay or not. So that's what you're telling me. But that was the only way that I could stay. That's the only way I could find myself. Of course. Because here's the trueness of it. Like when it's all transpired, I went back to meet the 60 nurses that kept me alive. Because I don't quite remember. And this is crazy. This isn't Atlanta. So this is crazy. One of the black girl nurses came up to me and said, Jamie, I listen to the future. I'm from the streets. I was like, what I listen to rap music. What does that have to do with anything? I'm just giving you a frame of reference. That's why I am. I said, okay. She said, but Jamie, I want you to know something. You're miracles. What do you mean? She said less than 3% of people that come in with what you have walk out of here. We usually put them in the box. I said, I said, oh wow. She said, but when I saw it was you in the emergency, I rolled my sleeves up. I said, man, man, thank you so much. He said, what'd you think of me for? I rolled my sleeves off for everybody. She said, but just remember your miracle, Jay. And I was like, you know, so didn't. But it makes you want to go get it. And then Dr. Shootie. Yeah, surgeon. I had a good surgeon, a great surgeon. Yeah. And he wore a Laker jersey. You know, when cool white boys, you know, it was cool. You just like, like I asked him, was it, was it? He said, well, you nervous now. I said, come on, he said, yeah. I said, he said, you were sick. He says, but I. You were sick. That's how the doctors be. Yeah, he was. Am I right? He was very cool. He was very cool. What were you thinking, especially with your dad playing, he played all the time? Was it every moment when you were like, you know, when you were scared, when you were like, yo, dad, like, you know, or just what was your energy? It's when you're in it, you don't have time to be scared because you your your brain overhalls adrenaline. You're just you're in caretaking mode and you're never really ready to take care of your parent, like you never feel you're you're never ready for that moment. When it happened, I was like, I got this. We were like, it was so laser focused in taking care of him and protecting him and making sure that he was going to get to the other side. And I could only do so much. Michael Crowley, yo, that's really causing. Oh man, damn. I don't know. I'm just saying. When you look at the Godfather, right? And Michael Crowley on is out with his girl on Christmas. And he picks up the newspaper and sees that his father has been shot. And he says, it doesn't say if it doesn't say if he's alive, it doesn't say if he's like, and he's not really telling his girl what he's reading, it doesn't say if my father's alive. And Michael calling on left and he went to that hospital and he took over. And he told one of the guys, there were people coming here to do danger to my father. I need you to help me. That's who she was. Comes with. Like when I talk to the doctor, I say, hey, listen, I hear everybody stories. I hear everybody stories. I want to know from you what it was. He said, hey, man, without her, you wouldn't be here. So I said, hey, that's Michael Crowley on. So forever, you know, forever. And you know, the doctor was like, no one handles it like this. No one handles it because you were on the slab, TMZ, all these of it. And she, she handled it. So sorry to get like that. I mean, because a lot of people be, especially with the type of jobs we have, a lot of people be in it until you really need them. I don't even know your situation. I just know when I'm hearing it. The reason why I imagine you getting the motions because somebody has your back. That's why I know that I'm going to be okay. Because when it was really, because you know how this business is, man, when it's good, you know what I mean? When it get weird, people, man, she helped, man, how they say 10 told down, whatever it was. But I talk to the doctor because I wanted to know his words. He says, when I finally got my parents, he says, man, your daughter saved your life. She saved my parents. She saved, she saved you. You said she's the reason that you're here and the way she had to. I mean, you had to deal with a lot of stuff. She had to deal with the internet. That was, that was a whole, that was a part that I was not prepared for. Because they be saying anything cloned. What y'all doing? That's what I'm doing. And what's this? I had a block. Like many black. I put my hands. I put my hands. Yes. And like the, I had never been on the, on the bad side of the internet. I always had, you know, nice comment people. Sure. But as soon as he went dark, the inner, it was scary. The place is the internet went. Of course. With the cloning and the conspiracy. And I was like, what? I mean, I just want to be like, it's not that interesting actually. What it is is, you know, it's a human thing. Yeah. But it also was not my place to ever release his medical information. Yeah. And so I, I had never really experienced that before. And it, that was the toughest part was just trying to manage that. But it didn't really matter. I don't think they can say whatever they want. As long as he's good. Yeah. Yeah. And that was, amen. Yeah. I mean, so now God is amazing. And when you say to, you know, that, that thing that said, I didn't want the second chance. But when I look at her now, I say, woo, I got to live this thing. I got to live it because that thing, you know, it's crazy. With no singing, no Peter blowing his horn. Yeah. It was just, it was quiet over there. And then go. Yeah. Oh. If I, look, if I had to cave out, I was like, all right, go. But awakening and realizing how much love and how much strength someone had for you. We should all have a current Marie Fox tonight and I know I'm serious and she loves to play it down But that dude I said man, give me that reason man bro. He said I don't see people fall apart in here And he said she had to deal with so much and she's sliding but the but But the the so not so sure but the media part of it is a tough thing to do because we all we all live and die in comments Yeah, it affects everyone. Yeah, and I'm older so I don't necessarily, you know, I was on black planet in my space But but I couldn't imagine being in that situation where people are really trying to And calling the hospital asking for your medical records things like that I think I think people don't often realize what you know because they get so connected to folks and again We watch your whole it doesn't mean that they should but people don't understand how they do more lies or do humanize somebody You know, and don't really think about the fact that maybe you shouldn't be calling up there Yeah, would you do that to your neighbor down the street? But because of Jamie Foxx you think and it's it's not a big deal But hey man Yeah, like and to be able to do the show with him is a whole new context now being able to work with him It I was already really grateful, but now it's like it's such a blessing to be able to work with your family Yes, you know As it should be yeah, and also I'd want to you know say congratulations. I got married You got married to join y'all got married during this we got it. We got engaged during while he's in In rehab and that was like a really nice light thing that can happen while we were killed at that He killed that thing We were in Chicago. That's where he was rehabbing and he took me to a park and we were in front of this beautiful tree and he gave He this woman his phone for a picture. He's a second picture, but on the phone he had on a note It said like I'm proposing can you press record and said a little man at plans? I love a man the plan Yeah, and then we had a we had a whole after thing at his in his you know, rehab room and it was really special It was really really special. Oh my god. You always like you know. Yeah, man I like Joe cuz Joe saved some black people You know how we can get into that. What do you do? You ain't got to talk. Have you ever seen the nature? Is it a TV show? No, we was we went to Hawaii. We was in Hawaii. She said it's really we went to Hawaii And so you know Joe? He's six five. He's six five. Okay. Did you sing? Blanco so so man he could swim so he could swim so all these Black people on this guy their boat trying to snorkel So we are Maui and you know, I know Maui I just lit it so I see the wave I say hang on in there and I'm all with you. It was a it was a choppy day Joe went saved my whole black family and then one of my homies Dave Brown his daughter. Oh, I got it I said you don't got it and she the floated all the way back to Pebble Beach So Joe I said Joe she way out there don't worry. Oh my gosh And save my whole save my whole fancy. I said that's the one right there Joe. It's been Joe and it is a great director He's watching from the boat. I'm watching on the boat. I don't get in. He's gonna watch him go. Oh, it's choppy I said, there's another. No, that's not what he's not with us Well, look I ain't gonna take a moment more y'all time I when I tell you that I have had a ball. I feel like I love you kicking back at the house Y'all you guys are just so awesome, and I just hope that one day I'm just sitting up there having a conversation with Leo by how he's running my Blessing and a dream and I'm just so happy man I'm so happy for you happy to have this moment with you. We have happy to have this moment Crazy.
