Jalen Hurts OUT for Week 6! Fantasy Football Impact on Eagles Offense (10/15 Fantasy Football Podcast)
10m 41s
Jalen Hertz is expected to miss the upcoming game against the Panthers due to a blood clot, creating uncertainty for the Eagles’ offense and impacting fantasy lineups. With key offensive starters like Barclay and Smith potentially sidelined, the team faces a weak offensive line and a high-risk quarterback scenario, especially with backup QB Tanner McKee viewed as pressure-sensitive and ineffective. Dallas Goedert is the most reliable running back option, while Damian Pierce may only see limited action. Fantasy managers should avoid dropping Hertz outright, instead treating him as a conditional risk and pivoting to veteran backups like Kirk Cousins, Jameis Winston, or Kyler Murray depending on matchups. The Panthers’ defense, known for 83% of coverage, presents a tough challenge. The Eagles’ schedule—against the Cowboys, Washington, and Giants—makes depth and stability crucial. While Hertz’s absence raises concerns, hope remains that he returns soon and the team can recover. In fantasy football, managers should prioritize safe, low-risk options in a high-stakes stretch, focusing on value rather than star power. This episode emphasizes the importance of flexibility, situational awareness, and leveraging available depth when starting or drafting in fantasy leagues.
>> This is Fantasy Football today from CBS Sports. >> So what a play! >> Can you believe this? >> It's a no again. >> It's time to dominate your fantasy league. >> To the races, play stays on his feet. >> Just gotta have the distance. >> Now, here's some combination of Adam, Dave, Jamie, and Heath. [MUSIC] >> All right, everybody. Let's do a bonus podcast right now on Fantasy Football today. >> And unfortunately, Jalen Hertz is going to be out this weekend. We don't know how long this injury will keep him off the field. We hope he gets better soon as a superficial blood clot. And it's a matchup against the Panthers this week. And this incredible stretch of matchups coming up for the Eagles offense, Dallas, At Washington, and the Giants. We're all here, Adam Azer, Dave Richard, Heath Cummings, Jimmy Eisenberg. Heath, earlier this morning on Thursday, you talked about how much you liked, whichever running back was going to start for the Eagles against the Panthers. We also just saw a report a couple of minutes ago that Seguin Parkland to Vante Smith were not seen at the open portion of practice. So is there any eagle that you're comfortable starting this week? >> I might have a hard time getting away from Dallas Gart, just because if we don't have DeVante Smith, Carolina still doesn't have any corners. So I think they'll probably stay in that deep shell coverage they've been playing to prevent themselves from getting burnt over the top, which could mean a lot of easy dump off to Dallas. Goddard, he'll still be a top 12 tied in for me. And then Damian Pierce is probably going, we've talked about it already, like you get past RB18 this week and we don't like these guys. Damian Pierce is probably going to have a lot of work. I would guess the Eagles will try to run the ball and take something off Tanner McKee's plate. So Pierce will probably be a low end RB2. >> All right, so that's the topic really we can talk about tomorrow unless you have some questions about tonight's game, you just have to go against any eagle. I mean, you don't have to start Evan Ingram or AJ Barnard over Dallas Gartard or anything like that. But start Jaylen Waddle, don't hold out for DeVante Smith or anything like that, it doesn't look like he's just got a great chance to play. >> They're running back interesting though, I mean Pierce versus the Broncos guys. >> What you call? >> So at this point with the fact that Barclay didn't practice again and that their quarterback is out, my guess is they're going to take their time with Barclay and not rush him back. So I would probably wait it out and see if I like Pierce better than the Broncos guys. So I would go that rough. >> We can do a little beat the waiver wire here, Dave talking about some quarterbacks. Like what do you do if you have Jaylen Hertz? First of all, do you drop Jaylen Hertz? And secondly, what's the alternative? >> I would hesitate to just snap drop him until we know more about when he'll come back. You don't know, nothing's come out that says anything that says of 220 PM Eastern on Thursday. So if something comes out and it says, yeah, he's going to miss a month plus, he's droppable. But by the time he comes back, maybe the offensive line's a little bit healthier. Maybe DeVante Smith and St. Juan Barclay are back, you might regret it. So just be aware of that. Let's put him in the droppable but not a must drop category. And then you just pivot to one of the other quarterbacks, I'm sure. The veterans that we talked about this week from Cousins, Jamis, Rogers. They're all going to be available in some leagues. I think if you've got a scratch, deeper than that, a quarterback, it could get pretty gross. I don't know if you've got the stone to start Daniel Jones in his match against Tennessee. It's at the worst that you could do. Tyler Huntley would be another interesting option. Maybe if you're really desperate, you could try Jaylen Daniels. But it's obviously not good if Hertz is your only quarterback and you've got to go and find somebody else. And a lot of these veterans are already rostered. And if you're choosing between those three, what did you say? You said Jamis Winston. You said Kirk Cousins. Did you say? Yeah, my order would be Winston Cousins, Rogers. If you're doing it for multi weeks and you're thinking about week seven as well. I would change it. Yeah. It's the order changes for me. Rogers would be at the top, yes. Yeah, because Jamis has the Texans and Cousins has the Rams next week. Rogers has the Saints. Another guy to look at if you're looking for next week is Kyler Murray. He gets the Colts next week. So those are in the Lions. And then Kyler's schedule is great after the Vikings buy. Yeah. Anything else you want to talk about with this story, Jamie? I don't mean to shortchange it or anything, but he's out. Eagles are probably going to struggle offensively this week. And you can talk about Tanner McKee and whether how you feel about him in Superflex. I'm thinking about picking up in a Superflex dynasty league, but I don't know. It's not that exciting, but what do you think? Well, I mean, we're in the throws of By Week Hell right now, you know. So just started. This is the first team with four teams on it, first week with four teams on a buy. So you're going to need some healthy bodies that can throw the football. And he's not Jalen Hertz. He may have a little bit more success running this offense on schedule, so that might help the receivers. You know, that could certainly be a possibility. You still have a makeshift offensive line. I didn't mean to cry, sorry. Make shift offensive lines. I'm like, how you apologize there, but you don't apologize. Really, I do not purpose that. It was accurate. Yeah. Yeah, it was. Yeah, it's accurate. Subliminal thoughts there. The offensive line stinks or has potential to stink. You know, you're talking about throwing to Don Tavinewicks and Darius Cooper and McCuy Lemmon. It's not the best receiving core right now, hopefully Smith comes back and is 100%. I think when you're looking at it, you know, I mentioned on Wednesday from a by-low standpoint, you know, go by the Eagles. I still think say one Barclay could be a number two running back in this environment. I still think De Monte Smith could be a number two receiver in this environment. You're not going to get the investment, the return on investment that you have, at least, you know, when drafting them. But you can still trade for them relatively cheap if somebody wants to just unload them because of the concern of what Jalen Hertz is because the schedule is still very good. Like you, we've seen time and time again, you know, backup quarterbacks come in and elevate the players around them, maybe not to the same degree, but in the case of Jalen Hertz, we know he's not the most polished pastor, so that could certainly change some things and help, you know, what this offense does under Sean Manion. You know, for McCuy and a Super Flex League and you look at the schedule coming up, it just might be someone you want to pick up because it's the Cowboys, the commanders, and the Giants in their next three games. Maybe Jalen Hertz is back next week. We just don't know. It's a blood clots. I don't think you really get a great timeline for these types of things. Any final thoughts, Ethan? That's terrible. Hope Jalen Hertz is okay. Yeah. Exactly. All right. So. You wonder though if they lose, like, do they, do they shut them down? I mean, I know it's not that type of injury. And the irony of this week is Taylor Moten, the tackle for the panthers coming back from a blood cut issue in his lungs, you know, different scenario, but Q was out for the first four weeks of the season. And that could be what they're dealing with. You know, you know, if you live in South Florida, you know, a little bit blood clots ruined Chris Boss' career, you know, he was, he was, you know, a bit part of the big three and had to, you know, basically retire because of blood clots. I'm sure there's numerous other examples. I just know that one in particular. So hopefully it's not something that's serious, serious for Jalen Hertz. All right. Let's take one quick break and get some final thoughts on Tanner McKee when we come back. Dave, you looked at some tape of Tanner McKee. He actually had a start in week 18 last year and scored about 14 fantasy points on 40 pass attempts against the commanders. Would you say he's competent. I wouldn't say he's got a great arm, certainly doesn't put a lot of velocity into his throws and when he does, it can be off target. I worry about how he'll perform. He's definitely pressure sensitive a lot of quarterbacks are, but with an offensive line down at least three starters from week one, it could be four starters from week one. That's problematic for him and I think about, you know, the Damian Pierce call. I don't think he's going to be the only running back that the Eagles use and McKee got some time this preseason with Pierce, with Carson Steele, with McIleman, a little bit with Derrius Cooper, you know, I just feel like I would pass on everybody except Goddard when it comes to options for fantasy this week and that includes Pierce because I just think that there could be a time share in a backfield behind a bad offensive line with a back, with a back quarterback and these guys don't necessarily catch a lot of passes, steeled in the preseason from McKee, but it could get really gross. The Carolina Panthers DST is out there and 83% of CBS sports leagues. I think they're a good start this week against the Eagles. Oh, yeah, that's a good, also like if you're thinking about Hannah McKee for super flex in the two times he's started so far in his career, he has run not at all. Yeah, so I'm not even sure like he's a backup quarterback that's going to help you score points with his legs at all, and he's not going to do very well passing. Jalen Hertz has averaged seven point five yards per pass attempt over his career and he's been about 20% worse than that this year because the situation's so awful. So I think this is a horrible spot for a backup quarterback that also doesn't run. Do they? Is there anybody? I know Andy Dall and just got released. Is there anybody out there you think that they go get? I mean, it depends on how long Hertz is out too. Like if they really decide that this is it and Hertz isn't coming back this year, then I don't know if Dalton even comes back. They've got a rookie named Cole Payton who was at the senior bowl and I think he's got some traits, but I don't think he's ready for the NFL by any stretch. So, you know, I just wonder if they've got two wins if they end up with two wins, where does this team go in 2027? Yeah. It's a good question, but you know what? This is a crucial stretch. Best case scenario for them is.
Jalen hurts missing minimal time, come back. And they're saved by the NFC uses. They're even if they lose this week. They're still going to be right in the thick of it in the NFC's. Well, the Giants win and they lose. They're what, three and a half back, I think. The tie. They haven't played Giants yet. The tie. They've got to feel like they will beat the Giants, you know, could beat the Giants. All right, that's it for this bonus episode. Thanks so much, everybody, for tuning in. And good luck to you in week six, see you later. [MUSIC PLAYING]

FAQs
Jalen Hertz is currently out with a suspected blood clot, and there's no clear timeline for his return. His status remains uncertain, and fantasy managers should treat him as a potential drop candidate until further notice.
Dallas Goddard is the most likely starting running back, as the Eagles may rely on him to share carries behind a struggling offensive line and deep coverage from Carolina.
Damian Pierce is expected to see limited action as a low-end RB2, likely due to a balanced backfield and the Eagles' plan to run the ball to reduce pressure on Tanner McKee.
Do not drop Jaylen Hertz immediately. Wait for updates on his return, as a backup quarterback might elevate the offense, especially with a weak offensive line and limited depth.
Veterans like Kirk Cousins, Jameis Winston, and Kyler Murray are available. Cousins and Winston are strong options, while Murray offers a good schedule and could be valuable in Superflex leagues.
Tanner McKee is not a high-velocity passer and is pressure-sensitive. With a weakened offensive line, his performance is questionable, and he may not be a reliable option in fantasy matchups.
