Jake Shane sleeps under a GIRLS poster? | OMG Obsessed
47m 3s
Jake Shane, host of the podcast *Therapist*, shares his deep obsessions with music, merch, and storytelling. He recounts a traumatic experience at a European wax center that has made him a vocal critic of such services, rooted in a painful incident involving heat and poor technique. His passion for merchandise—especially vintage and tour-related items—connects him to music and culture, with a current obsession sparked by the Beach Boys, fueled by music biopics like *Love and Mercy* and *Bohemian Rhapsody*. He values the emotional bond of wearing merch as a sign of belonging, even when absent from events. His journey includes a profound connection to the show *Girls*, which he rewatched repeatedly and now considers one of his favorite experiences. He also shares excitement about vintage finds, especially from stores like Moth Food, and highlights the emotional power of music biopics in capturing artists' journeys. The conversation blends humor, personal trauma, and deep affection for music and fandom, illustrating how obsession becomes a form of emotional and cultural connection.

That's all of it, available wherever you get your podcasts. >> I mean, I literally close my eyes to you every single night. I have a poster of season one of Girls, talk about merch in my bedroom. >> Stop. >> Literally right in front of me. >> It's a great time. >> I'm rewatching Girls, I got a rewatch, Girls, my God. [MUSIC] >> So tell me obsessives. How does that make you feel? >> Mm-hm. >> And how's that working for you? >> Uh-huh. So what you're saying is you stumbled upon an Instagram reel about Japanese stationary and later found yourself knee deep in a reddit thread getting to know the niche Internet community around it and stayed up all night for the stationary awards to drop. >> Obsessives do not threaten me with a good time. Welcome to OMG Obsessed. >> I am Sasha Mimit. >> I call all of you obsessives but today's guest thinks you are all Pussies. He is an actor. >> He's a comedian and influencer and the host of the Spotify and Netflix podcast, Therapist. Please welcome Jake Shane. >> OMG Obsessed. [MUSIC] >> Hi. Oh my gosh. >> Hi. >> Hi. >> I'm such a fan. This is so cool. >> Dude, Ditto. >> Thank you so much for doing this. Hello. Welcome. >> Thank you for having me. Girls just seriously like my favorite show of all time. So this is just a dream. >> Oh my God. I'm so pleased to hear this. Fantastic. So okay. I like to start the podcast before we get into what you were obsessed with. I like to talk about something I'm obsessed with about my guest and I feel very seen by this little nugget that I discovered about you. You have beef with European wax center. >> It's the worst place home. God's green earth. Why do you hate it? >> Okay. First of all, I have like a deep trauma experience from European wax center. I went in the middle of like high summer, Manhattan. I'm not sure if this girl was new or she was just like having a bad day, but she somehow, I've been getting bikini waxes since I was a teenager, like I'm not new to this and my pain threshold is pretty high. Somehow something happened in the alchemy of like whatever she was doing and the heat of the wax and the heat of the New York summer and it got stuck. She like literally could not get just like it like adhered to my skin. It was just like, I am now I live on your labia and this is my home. And she cut her way of dealing with it was to panic and like pour basically half a tube of baby powder all over me and then just yank as hard as she could. >> That is so much worse than my experience. >> It just it ended with both of us crying because I was crying because I was like, that's my skin and she was crying because she was like, that's your skin. It's also just like not a good wax, like every time I'm like, you missed it, like why did I even go through that? Why did I go through that and then you break out after then you break out and it's okay, but why do you hate it? Why do you hate it? We need to know. >> I just think that their whole like system is like ludicrous like I went to the wrong location. There was a location in Weftswood and there's a location in Santa Monica. I drove to the Wefts location by accident. They were like, no, you're at the Santa Monica one, I'm like, oh shit, sorry, it's eight minutes away. And I called them out and said, I'm sorry, I'm 10 minutes late and they were like, we have a seven minute cancellation policy, it was like seven minute. I was like, this is insane. And then I got there. >> That's too specific. It's too specific. >> That's right. It's too specific. Suddenly weird is going on. I got there. There were two people behind the desk and only one waxer. So I was like, how does this make sense? Why do you need two people behind the desk and one waxer? The waxer was just telling me how much she hated it there. How toxic the work environment was, how miserable she was and I was like, I knew it. I told her. I was like, I knew something was wrong with this place. I literally walked in and said, something was wrong. >> Have you been back? >> No. >> Okay. >> I've taken it too far to the point where I can't, like I've been tempted to go back. But I'm like, I can't at this point. I've caused such a ruckus. >> You can't go back. So you stand on principle now. >> Yeah, it's a principle thing. It's a pride and principle thing. >> It is also such a fascinating interaction. I find it so hilarious that when you're going to get a Brazilian wax and I'm like, someone is about to stare into the abyss of my asphalt and put hot wax on it. But they also give you a tiny little towel to cover yourself with for a moment that I'm like, you guys, what are we doing here? Are they like, we'll leave the room, we'll leave the room while you get on dress. I'm like, well, you're going to see me like. >> You're going to see all of it. Why are we leaving the room? Yeah. Okay. Your first obsession is one of my obsessions. So I got very excited to talk to you about it. You are obsessed with merch. >> Yes. And I'm wearing merch from the Grammys 2003 where Nora Jones swept how sick is this? >> Okay. Where did you find that? >> Moth food. This vintage store in New York and LA. >> No, I love moth food. >> Yes. And I came across this. I was like, holy fuck. It's Grammys 2003 merch, where I'm like, it is merch is my favorite. I have like, I only wear merch. >> Okay. What was your gateway drug into merch? Like what was the thing that got you hot on merch? It must have been like festival attire. Like when I was going to governor's ball in New York and like everyone would go to school the next day and all the guvall merch. And like Travis Scott was putting out all this cool merch and like there was like a time in like 2016, 2017 when like merch was like the hottest thing on planet earth. Like when like Kanye West had like the life of Pablo merch and like everyone was like, where'd you get that? I just loved the idea of like going to school the next day after you went to a concert in the merch from that concert. >> Yeah, it's sort of like, did you ever go on vacation as a kid to one of those places where like you could ride a water slide and you'd get like a wrist band and then you'd come back from spring break and you'd have like 17 wrist bands. >> Oh, you know what was the gateway to my merch was I went to summer camp in LA every summer and you would have all the counselors sign your rash guard and that to me was like merch. >> Okay. >> That to me was like merch. >> And is there like, I don't know where I fall on this line yet because I fucking, I love merch and I feel like even if it's something that's just cool or it's like an artist that I like, I still sometimes feel a little bit weird or guilty if I haven't been it like I wasn't there. >> Yeah. So you have to move past that because like right now I'm obsessed with the Beach Boys and I've been like scouring their website to like find like Pat Sounds merch. It's just it's a good conversation starter, it makes me feel like cool, like I'm a part of something. >> I don't know. It somehow feels like wearing a tour t-shirt of a band that you like as opposed to just like wearing a t-shirt of the band, it feels like a cut above somehow. >> Yeah. The tour is I think I have like a James Taylor tour t-shirt upstairs, which is like, which I also got, yes, which I also got from Moth Food, like Moth Food really. >> Yeah. No, they come correct every single time. >> They do. They absolutely understand the assignment. Wait, what got you hot on the beach, why is the Beach Boys all of a sudden? Is it just like the sound of summer? >> No, I started watching all these like music biopics because I was on the plane and I watched Bohemian Rhapsody for the first time. Then I was like, oh, well, now I'm interested in all these biopics that I've never seen and I watched the Elton John one and then I watched like, "Love and Mercy," which is the one with Claudeno and John Qsac and Elizabeth Banks. I had never heard pet sounds before and I was like, oh, my God. I felt like, yeah, it was like, I mean, I obviously heard like, wouldn't it be nice and God only knows, but I had never heard like the whole album and I just like became like encapsulated by like the world of like Brian Wilson and like, I thought like, I just like became obsessed. And I. just became very hyperfixated on the beach boys. And now that has turned to Oasis. I'm like very hyperfixated on Oasis right now. - You have said the magic words. I, it's funny, I like to ask people sometimes, I'm like, what would you be willing to wait in line for? Because I'm really, I'm not someone, although it is funny being in England, like they all love queuing for things. Everybody queues for things. - Oh my God, I know. - Where are we all fucking queuing? Let's stop queuing. - But I really think the only two things that I would wait in line for. Other than of course, like, you know, eternal life and world peace and endless wealth or something like that. - Yes. - Um, our coffee and like really fucking good Oasis tickets. - I, I mean, I obviously knew Wonderwall. Like, but I didn't know the rest of the album and I'm like so fast and I think they're so cool. Like I'm so, and like now they're, movies coming out, which I get to see. And I'm like, I just, I loved, I think the reason I love merch so much, it's like that feeling of like being a part of something. Where it's like, you know what I mean? And that's why the tour merch hit specifically different. 'Cause you're like, even if I wasn't there, like, I feel like a part of it. - Okay, full disclosure. I am not a hers customer. Here in-depth, insightful interviews with authors like Zadie Smith, musicians like Steve Earl, actors like Kate Winslet and Beyond. You never know who you'll hear next on all of it, but it's always worth listening. - I was in Kentucky recently shooting and I discovered this incredible vintage shore that had this woman, I was like, where do you get all of your shit? And she was like, they're basically like the corner and like the morgue, no to call me first when some old person dies. And I get into these houses like before anybody else. And I was like, this is incredible. - That is insane. - I know a little bit dark, but she was like, there's shit that family members are just like hauling into dumpsters. And I'm like, no, no, no, no, no. But I found these epic t-shirts. She had like some really great vintage cheese and one of them was this. It was like some Walter Mathau movie from like the '60s and it was like their cast t-shirt or something. And I was like, this is. - So that's insane. - It literally, the high that I got when I found that shirt was it hit so hard. This clearly was owned by like a key grip at one point. And now it's owned by me. And I feel a part of this movie, even though I wasn't. - If I'm going to buy something vintage, like I wanna feel like I'm collecting something. You know what I mean? I wanna feel like I'm a big collector. Like I love like having like collections of things. Like it's just something type of fixate on. - Okay, so clearly, I normally ask people at the top if they are an obsessive person or not. So I feel like clearly the answer is yes. I'm very obsessive, incredibly obsessive. - Do you have a favorite piece? Or current favorite piece of merch? - Probably my Bonnie Vera t-shirt. I love a lot. I wear it all the time just because I love that album so much. The Sable Fable album is like one of my favorite albums of all time. And like. And I was asleep in this merch last night and switched it to get into this arch. But I saw the Carly Rae Jepsen 10 year emotion anniversary show and that merch is probably also my favorite. I wear it every day. - That's really funny. I will do that sometimes. Like I'll be wearing sweatpants that I slept in. And then I'm like, but I'm gonna walk to this store or like to get a coffee. So I have to change into other sweatpants, even if it's like the same. 'Cause I'm like, well, I can't wear the sweatpants outside that I slept in. I have to lay. - No, I was literally this close is just wearing what I slept in to this. And I was like, no, Jake, you can't. - I mean, you fully could have. That though. - Thank you, thank you. - Sleep clothes are welcome, but also I understand. Have you found a good because I have been hunting and have not been able to find like a really good piece of vintage Oasis merch? - I have not even begun that journey yet. And I'm about to go on it. So we have to exchange numbers after this. And I will find us Oasis merch and trust me. When I set my mind to this, I will find it. I have all the vintage thrift guys. Like I'm gonna put the word in everywhere. It's all I want at this point. 'Cause I'm so obsessed with them right now. I'm obsessed that they like hated each other then now they love each other. - Their whole story. Like the brothers are so sick-spirion or it's almost like a Greek tragedy to like that level on top of everything else. I feel like just like enriches the whole story. Okay, I don't know that I would do this, but do you feel like it's a faux pas to wear an artist's merch to see them play? - No, no, not at all. - No! Okay, I think you're like- - I think it's like the cool, I think it's like what, I don't- - I'm going down. - Yeah, double down on it. Like I'm going to see the strokes in New York on October 2nd and I fully plan on wearing their merch to see them. - The strokes are playing? - Yes, I'm getting to party bus, I'm so pumped. I like cannot wait. - I love the strokes. My only experience was seeing the strokes live which was so deeply depressing because like they were basically the soundtrack of my high school. I absolutely adore them. And I feel like they really never took a wrong step. It was like when we were shooting girls, I got some like paid press thing. I were like, we want you to go to this party in Miami. The strokes are playing. I think we were shooting at the time and I had like two days off and so I had to like fly down, fly back, but I was like, I will let, I will go, I will not sleep, I don't care. The strokes playing this party was literally them all standing lined up against a wall like- - Oh no. - And then at one point, one of them walked up and like went like this on a computer and like some playlist that they'd made started to play but like not even like good speaker. It's just like out of the computer and then they all just stood there like this against a wall for the rest of the party and I was like, wait, what's happening? - Very, very Julian Casablanqueous. - I mean, it really, it trapped. - But they're talking, they're coming to the UK soon. You should see them. - Okay, I'm literally, I'm gonna Google this the second we get off. - Apparently the set list is great. Like I'm all, I'm all ready to go. I had my merch, I'm ready. - Okay, well now I have to find vintage strokes merch. - Exactly. - Like I've always been into merch but I got into like vintage merch of like bands that I love only really in like the past year or so. - Me too, me too. Like really like the past year is when I started like, 'cause when I discovered Moth Food, the store I was like, oh my God, this is like, this is like the mecca for like thrift shopping. Like this is like the coolest and the guy who runs it, Tommy is like coolest guy in the world and like
like he comes with all this stuff. - Do you know that he runs Moth Food? - Yes, Tommy's the best. - Oh! - Okay, oh my god. I'm gonna need you to take me on a pilgrimage when I come back to Moth Food. - Oh my god, when you're back in New York or LA 'cause they have multiple locations as we know, we will go to Moth Food together. - Literally, I've never been more excited for anything. They had, because I am obsessed with horses, they had this one horsey t-shirt that I missed out on. And I like still, I will wake up in the middle of the night sometimes and just be like. - How do you miss out on it? Was it, did you miss the Sunday drop? - It just, it was sold by the time I saw it. And I was just like, oh my god. Like, I will pay you double. And she was like, I'm sorry, it's gone to its new home. And I just hope that it's happy there. And I hope that they love it as much as I would have. - Uh-huh, but if you tell them, please be on the lookout for horse stuff. They will let you know. - Okay, all right, I'm gonna write them. I'm gonna tell them. We're gonna, we're gonna work on this. Okay, have you ever gotten from a job or something of the sort, a piece of merch that you truly love and or are like, this is abominable? I'm giving this away. - You know what, I think you were, you did, you were guest start on adults this season as well. Didn't you? - Yes, I did, I did. - Yes, when I shot with them, we went to a Maple Leafs game and we all bought merch at the Maple Leafs counter. And Owen makes fun of me. He's like, I've never seen someone buy so much merch in their entire life. He's like, I thought we were just buying a hat. I have a jacket, a hat, like everything. So all my Maple Leafs merch is like very, that I consider from the job. Oh, actually, you know what? I do have a favorite piece of merch from a job. It wasn't like a job, but do you watch Real Housewives? - No, I don't. - So Real Housewives have Rhode Island, Alicia Carmine owns this store called Pizza Mama. And it's, when I interviewed her, I got like this like Pizza Mama merch and I'm like obsessed with it. Like that just says bitch on it? - Yeah, it says bitch, Pizza Mama, like I'm obsessed. If, by the way, if you have any vintage girls merch, this is my plea to you, that would be the mecca of all merges. - Okay, I'm not gonna lie. I have a piece of girls merch. This is maybe one of my favorite pieces of merch that I have from a job. I have a couple, I have a couple other things that I really sort of cherish. Like I have a t-shirt from Mad Men. It has the logo of the ad agency. - Oh, that's sick. - And like it was like baked in somewhere the season, but like that was part of our wrap gift. But I have a piece of girls merch. That's a hoodie that we only got the people who went to Japan got. It's like this blue hoodie and it says girls on it in Japanese. - Oh, I mean, that's, you can never get rid of that. That is like the coolest thing. Shoshana's journey to Japan is like what? By the way, one of my favorite needle drops in that entire show was when Shoshana got back from Japan and God, what, who sang it? It was some song. Oh yeah, what song is playing when I'm walking through the airport? - It's, oh, oh, it's past lives. - Past lives, past lives. - Past lives. - That's a great time. - I'm rewatching girls. I got a rewatch, girls. Oh my God. This is like getting me going now. That it was one of the greatest rewatches of my entire life. - Oh, dude. When did you rewatch it? - When I was 23. I mean, you, I literally close my eyes to you. Every single night, I have a poster of season one of girls talk about merch in my bedroom, literally, right in front of me, the greatest, one of the greatest shows of all time. - That really makes me like so happy that it's, I think it's probably my favorite, my favorite job I've ever done. My favorite character I've ever played. If you, like, who do you think you are? Which one of us? - I know I am Hannah. I know I am Hannah. I know I know I am Hannah. I, and I have a lot of marines in my life. And I wish I had more Shoshana's. Actually, I do have a Shoshana. I think Brett, my best friend Brett is very much a Shoshana. - Interesting. Okay. - And my favorite Shoshana scene in the entire show is when you are picking Jessa up from rehab and you and Hannah are singing to Maroon 5 and Adam Driver smashes the radio. It's like seriously, one of my favorite scenes of all time. - That was such a hilarious episode to shoot 'cause Adam and I did not have a lot of stuff together ever. And it was literally Adam and Lena and I in a car for hours on end for days. And it was, I learned so much about Adam Driver in those few days. It was so interesting. And then essentially never spent that much time with him ever again. And that's, episode has one of my favorite lines that I ever got to say, which I actually love asking people in real life, which is what's your favorite utensil? - Oh my God, iconic when you're in the diner. - When we're in the diner. - And honestly, what is your favorite utensil? - A spoon. Hands down, it is the superior utensil. No question. - Okay, mine's a fork. Okay, explain. - I just love the aggressiveness of it. Like it's ability to like cut. Like you can cut something up at the same time. And like, I don't know. I don't know. Forks just really do it for me. But people really ride for spoons. - I will die on that hill because I think it's also like, I love a salad, but I love a salad with a lot of stuff in it. Like I love to put like a nut and a chopped fruit and like avocado. And my biggest pet peeve is when I am going out of salad and I can't get a good bite with a spoon. I just feel, I'm like. - Yeah, it's easy, it's easy. - You can cut with a spoon. I mean, like we can get in there. - I've been eating a lot of cereal lately. So spoons have been very helpful in that sick case. - What is your cereal of choice? I fucking love a cereal. - Pretty puddles, favorite of all time. - Wow, okay, okay. - I love the way it makes the milk look. I just like, it tastes like rice crispy. Like I love it. - How are we eating cereal? Like are we going like reasonable bowl? Are we going like full, huge bowl? Are we re-silling? - Reasonable bowl. Reasonable bowl, but filling, filling. Dump in as much as I can and then pouring the milk and then just going straight for it. - And are you like, do you want milk up to the brand? Do you want your cereal swimming in it? Or are you like, I just, interesting. - Oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I'd rather, the cereal to milk ratio, I prefer more cereal than milk. - Same, like I don't, I'm not someone who wants to like watch my cereal swim. - No, no, no, no, because then it's just done. Then it's basically-- - Yeah, almost over. - Soup, yeah. - Yeah, I couldn't agree with you more. I'm kind of a freak and I'm, I mean, I love a sugary cereal but I also really fucking love raisin brand and I have gotten-- - Wow. - I know, I don't know. I think it's because I'm like a 75 year old woman in my soul. I just fucking love it. And I've gotten my entire family hooked on it and my dad was shooting a movie earlier this year and he was alone in Atlanta and he would call me and be like, I'm so angry at you because none of my jeans fit because all I can eat is raisin brand. - Right. - I was staying with my parents for a while and we all were afraid that we were gonna run out because we were all eating so much. So we had a full part of the pantry that was dedicated to raisin brand and was like literally just at all times like 10 boxes of raisin brand just in case. - Oh, I mean, you're ready to go for any apocalypse situation ever. It's time to do all of raisin brand. - But I want like, I want the raisin brand that would survive a nuclear apocalypse. Like I don't want like some fancy air wand raisin brand. - No, I don't, the fancy serial doesn't do it for me. It's like for me, that's why I'm like, I like Fruity Puppels. It's just like my parents would never let me eat it as a kid. So now I have it in my house. - Oh my God, dude, my mom used to say that like regular Cheerios were junk food. - Oh, same with my, my mom told me to make my own catch up one. So I was like, I'm not, do we not? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Like. - What? Like how? She was just like food process a bunch of tomatoes. - She was just like, yeah, let's make our own catch up. I was like, but you can't cook, like love my mom, but I was like, you cannot cook. So this is going to taste horrible. - Also like we can just buy catch up. - We can just buy catch up. - Hey, it's Julia Louis-Dreyfus from The Weiser, the meat podcast, among other things. And I've got a little holiday wisdom for you. Hosting during the holidays means lots of cooking and that means your trash is going to be full of smelly, rotting food, yuck. So here's the wisdom. Get a meal food recycler. I did. We've had ours for years and it has totally transformed our kitchen. It's unbelievable how much cleaner everything is now. plus it's so.
easy to use. You toss in basically any food you don't eat. Peels, pits, meat, dairy bones. Last year we put in a whole turkey carcass, really. While you sleep, mill, automatically dries and grinds all your food waste down to about a fifth of its size. That means at night, you can fill it after a big, elaborate dinner, and by morning they'll be room for breakfast. Nothing rots, nothing stinks, no fruit flies. And my favorite part, no more of those gross, drippy mid-dinner garbage runs. If you want a cleaner, calmer kitchen this holiday season, go to mill.com/wiseer for an exclusive offer. That's mill.com/wiseer. Happy hosting. Hey everybody, it's me, Debbie C'mon Bell. This season on my podcast, who's with me, I speak with actor, rapper, producer, Davi Diggs. What does need to do? The jump off for me was Hamilton and it was the most popular thing in a very long time, but it was still for me, it was me and my friends making something dumb. I'm a relatively shy person, play a lot of boisterous characters, I'm really that way in life. Listen to who's with me with Debbie C'mon Bell, wherever you get your podcast. On all of it with me, Alison Stewart will talk about art, music, theater, literature, history, food, well, all of it. Okay, wait, you said your other favorite show that you would talk about. Can we discuss this? Yes. Okay. Okay. It is a German show on Netflix. When people ask me what are your two, what is your favorite show? I say it is a tie between girls and dark. They couldn't be more separate. If they try dark is a, it is three seasons. It is a show about a small German town and a boy named Michael goes missing and it just kind of, that's it. That's all you need to know because that's how I went into it. And the way that that story unfolds throughout those three seasons is something like I've never in my life seen before. I've watched it now through twice. I considered watching it through a third time the other day because I was like, what? And it's in German. So like imagine just you can't, I don't dub. I don't do the, I hate when like people like dub over. Okay. Well, that's my question. Wait, keep talking. I'm grabbing my light because I literally look like I'm a possessed vampire all of a sudden. It's gotten dark in Wales. Okay, but I tried to watch it. I can't handle a dub and I couldn't get it to just be subtitles. So I stopped watching. Go back, try to make it subtitles. It is, it's just amazing. And I was in the German countryside the other week. I was driving through the town and I was like, I literally feel like I've been dark right now. Like that. That's such a random flex though to just be like, I was just in the German countryside. No, and when I tell you I was in the German countryside, I was in middle of nowhere, Germany. And I was there because I work with this candy company called Cauches, which I am the Chief Creative Officer for, which I know sounds insane, but it makes sense. And I was there and I was with the CEO Bastion and he lives in like the countryside of Germany. And it was just so serene and beautiful and peaceful. And we also, did you see the video, the weather channel posted of the horses running like the wild horses running? No, where? Oh my god. I have to show you this now. It's the most insane. It's like these wild horses. It's the most beautiful video I've ever seen. Let me see. Where the fuck? Where is that? How beautiful is that? They're just Roman. It's in Georgia. It's like a beautiful pristine lake, gorgeous mountains. And they're just like running through this beautiful green field and it's majestic and perfect. It's perfect. Literally, just like lay me down in that field and I could die there. Yeah, it's beautiful. It stopped me in my TikTok tracks the other night. I mean, horses will do that, right? You have one other obsession that I feel like we should have segwayed to earlier, but there were too many things to discuss because it was so easy with the band merch. But you're now obsessed with music biopics. Oh my god. Yes, I'm obsessed. I don't know what I love about them. I love watching somebody rise to success. I find it so fascinating. When I was a kid, I used to watch VH1s behind the music all the time or E real Hollywood stories. Watching somebody rise from obscurity into this incredible mainstream success and what it looks like and that's why I'm so excited for the beetle biopics that are coming out. But I cannot wait. I cannot wait. But I just watching an audience fall in love with someone is so interesting. You just fall into the world of this artist however many hours. And then you're just like, I want it to be a TV show. Yeah. It is interesting that they never really do them as television shows. It's always a movie. The Madonna biopic keeps on not happening. I'm like, well, that's because the Madonna biopic needs to be a TV show in HBO Max miniseries. It's interesting because like, it's like, you want to see Madonna in the low-reside. And then you want to see Madonna married Sean Penn. And then you want to see Madonna do the first confessions of the dance floor. And like, you know, you want to see that you can't do that all in one movie. Yeah. No, I think it's true. It's like there's two, there's too much material to be covered. And then oftentimes I think that's why maybe like sometimes they don't land the plane well because like they're a little bit rushed because they're trying to fit too much in a hundred percent. Who do you feel like there needs to be a biopic of next? Like what band? A Fleetwood Mack one. Like a real Fleetwood Mack one. Like, and I know they have, we have Daisy Jones in the six, but like, I really, I really want the real Stevie next one. Well, it is interesting, right? That we keep kind of like playing around it. Like, did you see stereophonic? No, what's that? It was a musical that they did on Broadway like two years ago now, maybe. It was the thing that sort of like broke Sarah Pigeon open. And it was essentially, it was like, it wasn't Fleetwood Mack, but it was. And the music was all original and it was incredible. But it was like, is it just too daunting to like try and capture that magic? It is, but when it's done right, it's like, I love watching like an artist like make their magnum opus. And like, I think that I think watching like a Fleetwood Mack biopic about the making rumors would be like, so cool. I mean, that would be incredible. That's a, it's essentially, yeah. What? I want to journey. I want to journey Mitchell biopic. That's what I was just thinking that I, I would love that too. I would love that. I've been really obsessed with, um, there's a demo of, uh, have you heard this demo? Yes. I'm, it's my obsession. My friend Elliott sent it to me. And then they needle dropped it at the end of the invite. But you hear her laugh. It is one of the most incredible. Her laugh. Yeah. Let her giggle at the end. I just, it kills me every, but also I think it is far in a way a better version of that song. It is. And like, and also when he's like, what happy he says something wrong? And then he's like, shit. Oh shit. Yeah. Oh shit. Um, but her giggle at the end, and it, oh my god, I was looking for a place to rent for like the month before I had to come to Wales. And a friend of mine, I had like asked all my buddies in LA because I was like, I just kind of want to like rent like from a friend. Um, and the buddy of mine was like, okay, a friend of a friend just wrote our friend group and was like, the house in Laurel Canyon that they wrote that song is available to rent. But it was for them. It was like the month after I needed it. And I was like, this is how do I get out of going to work? So I can live in this house for a month because like that is such, it's such a piece of history. Yeah. Okay. My producers want, I, I did not know about this because I'm not a TikTok person. Blind ranking, which I literally was like, I don't even understand this. How can it be, how can you rank something if you don't know what it is? But they've made like a blind ranking music biopic for us. Oh, oh my god. Okay. Oh my god. Yeah. Yeah. This is so fun. Okay. So did you see Elvis? Yes. Okay. Where, where would you put it one through 12? Let's go with seven.
- Okay, okay. - No, I see, I've never seen "Walk the Line" and I need to see it, but I've heard it's amazing. - You haven't seen "Walk-O"? Okay, you literally need to hang up this call and go watch it immediately. - Yeah, I'm gonna watch it 'cause, yeah, I've heard it's unbelievable. - So good. - Okay, so you have to rank this one. - Oh my God, I don't know what the other ones are. Well, that's the whole point. Fuck me, I mean, the two of them together, I would maybe put this as like three, honestly, two or three. - Yeah. - I did not see this one. - I saw it, let's go with six. I thought he was great in it. - Okay. - I thought he was great, great, great. And oh, see, now this is why this is so hard. - This is why this is so hard. - Five. - Okay. - I love that, I love that one. Never saw it. - Ooh. - Never saw it. - He is incredible in this movie. I mean, I would give this a four. - We just ranked Selena at number five, a complete unknown at number six, Elvis at number seven, and walked the line at three, and now we are ranking Ray at number four. - I've never seen what Love's got to do with it. - I've never seen it either, so we have to put it low just 'cause I've never seen it. But that's not to say, we'll put it nine. - That's not to say it's not exquisite. What do you think, yeah, nine? Okay, let's put it nine. - Yeah, just 'cause we both never seen it. - Oh my god. - I mean, number two. - Number two, that's all the time for me. - That movie is honestly that I could do with a rewatch of that movie. I have not seen that movie in far too long. Okay, all right, we'll put it in a little bit. - Eight-mile is exceptional. - I have not seen-- - I've never seen the word, let's go with number 12 just because we've never seen it. And like, I don't know much about him. - I didn't see the Springsteen movie. Shirley Ellen White was exceptional as through Springsteen. - Okay. - I wasn't fully obsessed with the movie. So I would go with 10. - Are you a Springsteen fan? - Yeah, my dad, like, listened to E Street Radio every single morning on the way to school. But this kind of chronicle is this very, like, solemn period in his life where he's writing this album Nebraska. - Yeah, yeah. - And it's not as, like, exciting as I wished it would be. - We're doing 10, okay. - 10. - I mean-- - See, now this is the problem. Okay, so this is Bohemian Rhapsody. I would say, let's just put it at eight. We wish we could put it higher. - We wish we could put it higher. I would have given it, like, a three or four. But, okay. - It is well. - All so excellent. - All right. - Rocketland was excellent. - I thought Terran Edgerton was so amazing in it. But-- - Truly incredible. - We have to put it at 11. I know it's not fair, but I know what's coming next. If it's love and mercy, it has to be love and mercy. - I didn't make this, so I do not know. - I'm very worried about what's next. See, this is why the blind ranking thing is just, it doesn't make sense. - It's so hard. It's horribly difficult. Okay, this is a form of torture. All right, we're doing it. Fascinating. - Never saw it. Never saw it. And we have to walk hard. The Dewycock story. We have to put it at number one. And I've never seen it. - Well, I've heard the Dewycock. It has to be number one. Okay, well, there we have it. If I were to really do this, I'd probably put Bohemian Rhapsody number one. - Okay. - 'Cause Rommie Malick was just so fantastic in it. I'd put M.S. Eight Myles number two. I'd put Selena at number three. I would put Elton John at number four. No one can judge us based on this ranking, 'cause we didn't know what was coming next. So it was unfair. - Well, I do believe that is the point of a blind ranking, but also correct. - Yeah, it was just wasn't fair. - I ask everybody at the end to pitch me their obsession in one minute. - Okay. - So you can pick, you can pick which one it is. It can be dark. It can be merch. It can be an item, you know. Like I'm an alien from outer space. Okay, all right, go, go, go. - There is a show on Netflix called Dark. It is German. You have to watch it with subtitles not dubbed. The premise of the show is that a boy goes missing in a small German town. And what becomes of this missing story exceeds time, love, like it creates a universe, multiple universes. You didn't even know existed. It will challenge your belief of like time and of time is linear and what someone will do for love and like the connections we have and the sacrifices we make. And it's also just such a feat in like cinematography. It is so beautifully shot. It will make you wanna live out the rest of your days in the German countryside, even if it rains every day. And it is one of the most shocking shows I've ever seen in my entire life. And it's the greatest show, it's amazing. - Okay, that was incredible. I mean, I'm gonna go watch it now. I mean, it's absolutely going on my list. - Yeah, it's unbelievable. - Okay, because I am obsessed with you and I want everyone else to be obsessed with you, where can everybody find you on this green earth? - Well, my podcast, Therapus comes out every Wednesday at 7 p.m. Pacific on Netflix and Spotify. You can follow me on Instagram @passthatpuss. And tick-tock at Octopus Level 8. - When did this Octopus obsession begin? - It was senior year of college. I was smoking weed every single day and I was like, "Spoored shit lives out of my mind." And I was like, "I should just start reviewing Octopus "because it's funny." And I love Octopus. And that is how that started. - Okay, well, this was an absolute delight. Thank you so much. - Thank you so much. And this is not the end for us, by the way. - So this is absolutely. - Absolutely not the end. - I'm getting your number.
