82. J&K Updates: Hill Climb, Lifting, Books, and Current Events on Social Media

In this episode, Kelly and JK provide personal updates on their fitness journeys and current events. Kelly reflects on her successful Vail Hill Climb race, where she improved her time to 1:36:18 despite challenges like wildfire smoke and heavy traffic. She credits her performance to strategic changes, including using a handheld flask and road shoes. JK announces a shift to lifting three days per week instead of four, driven by business demands and inadequate sleep, and he is experimenting with a power-building style split while incorporating functional movements on off days. He also reveals plans for a year-long body recomp, acknowledging the difficulty of this approach based on client experiences. Kelly shares her unexpected enjoyment of the fantasy series "Fourth Wing," a genre she normally avoids. JK addresses widespread creatine misconceptions, emphasizing the importance of proper dosing and questioning simplistic claims. Finally, JK discusses the tragic death of college football player Nolan Wells, offering cultural context about group dynamics in Black communities to explain why the initial story raises red flags for many, while urging patience for investigation. The episode blends fitness insights with broader social commentary.

all right what is up folks welcome back to another episode of lifting running and living with your favorite podcasters kelly hello and jk that's me episode 82 here we go we're gonna make this an update show we'll update you on different things we're thinking about things that we've got going on all that good stuff so yeah we'll have kelly kick it off because you completed an event recently i did i just had the veil hill climb this pat no not this past weekend one weekend ago oh wait was oh yeah yeah yeah you're right yeah we're recording this on monday the 13th and the hill climb was on july 5th which was a week ago from yesterday oh my gosh wow okay i know yep all right so hard to go it went well so for those who don't live in colorado i don't know if you heard um i think it was like on tuesday before the weekend a fire broke out in leadville which for those who aren't familiar is not super far from veil um driving wise it's like 45 minutes because you have to like go around but like as the crow flies it's much closer um so you say as the crow flies yeah isn't that the saying it it is uh i just yeah it's i don't know i okay as the crow flies all right if you draw a straight line from veil to leadville it's much closer than if you do google maps to drive yourself there between the two okay you have to like drive around a mountain basically gotcha uh anyway um so that fire is still going i think i actually don't know if it's still going now it was going throughout the weekend still um so it wasn't contained so it was a little smoky which sucked it is still going i just checked but it's much smaller now no maybe it's much bigger uh it's like 6 000 acres now i think it was like 22 000 before if i remember correctly anyway those details don't matter it was smoky which wasn't ideal and i don't normally i'm not normally super sensitive to smoke but i noticed it like my eyes were watering the entire weekend we were there yeah which was very uncomfortable um and since it was the way the dates landed with the fourth so normally this race is the first saturday of july but the saturday was july 4th and there are specific july 4th activities like the parade so they pushed the race to sunday um so that meant we went up for the weekends we went up friday through sunday which meant i was going up and coming back with the masses everyone going to the mountains which in past years hasn't been the case because the fourth hasn't landed in the middle of the weekend so um the traffic was horrendous it took me three hours each way normally it's like an hour 40 oh okay yeah um the funny thing is i looked at my oil ring afterwards and my drive time i was like the max stress you could be possible is this surprising a little bit i mean it was stressful because it was like very crawling um and personally i don't like when we're crawling like in the mountains you know okay a flat highway is different but like up a mountain pass and down i don't don't love was it registering that stress the same way that it would measure the same stress of a physical activity so they measure stress for physical activity a little separate okay i'm pulling it up now like when you look at your stress graph which today i've had a restorative day um like you don't get a stress score during physical activity okay so it's i guess it's like measuring outside physical activity stress gotcha okay yeah so like baseline i'm assuming heart rate plays into that though oh yeah i'm sure yeah there's a a side note of curiosity because that tends to be one of the things that is a topic of discussion when it comes to mitigating or yeah mitigating or figuring out how to handle stress and one of the things that we talk about is that the body doesn't know the difference between right you know physical yeah sitting in traffic stress yeah and i'm doing a really heavy deadlift stress yeah yeah anyways all right i'm gonna stop interrupting now now you can keep interrupting it's okay so those were the low points of the weekend but i actually i thought of you a lot during both of them because because you couldn't breathe didn't want to be there like no which which of the things were you relating to because it was a run so i don't know not the run part the traffic part oh gotcha okay oh yeah because i was like i could complain about this but i'm going to be driving it either way so you know i like to get philosophical with traffic and road trips that is my jam this delay is for a reason it was just a lot of cars um yeah which is fair yeah but yeah i was like as i was planning when to leave i was like oh maybe i should leave earlier and i'll say i'm going to drive it anyway i'm going to leave the time i want and then just deal with whatever traffic i i have to there you go face there you go it's a great attitude to have yeah um so there's that but then we got to spend the weekend in vale which was nice and ty came up saturday so he spent only one night with us um but going into the race i had no idea what to expect because as i'm sure you know the listeners know if they've been listening i've been training on a flat track and flat roads primarily like i haven't really run hills i haven't really run trails but the course is just as it's like a dirt service road for the most part so you don't need it's not like a technical single track um so trail time is less important for this race uh but hills probably would have helped a bit um but there were a couple things i switched up this year so first thing i didn't wear my vest i just carried one of my flasks for water okay and i put my gels like in my shorts pocket um and i didn't need more than my flask which was nice so i was planning to stop at the eight stations if i needed water because that in previous years was why i wore my vest so i wouldn't have to stop but i was like i'll just i'd rather it's i haven't been running with my vest and it just feels more cumbersome than just having a flask in my hand uh but i didn't need the eight stations which was nice i didn't have to stop um so there's that and then this year i wore my road shoes instead of trail shoes okay yeah and the reason i did that is because i haven't run in my trail shoes for the past year oh yeah yeah yeah so like i'm sure they would have been fine but i've been running like my long runs in my road shoes so i was like there's nothing technical i think i'll be fine there were a couple sections where it was a little more uneven and a little looser dirt wise but like for the most part the road shoes were perfect so both my changes worked out in my favor and i ended up running my fastest time in the past past four years according to your spreadsheet i don't have a spreadsheet and you know this but according according to my photo album that holds my screenshots from my strava from every year you have a separate you have a separate album for those screenshots don't you yeah i just created it because i kept like searching for them totally tracks okay yeah oh man yeah but i took two minutes off my time last year i ran 138 16 and this year i ran 136 18 which i thought was pretty funny because the six and eight just switched spots it's like a fun numbers play you know you're such a data nerd i just noticed things like this um yeah but so i felt it was interesting because one of the things i do in this race is you like the first mile is flat through town you're like winding through the street and then you get to the dirt part and you start going up so every year i try to run for as long as i can before breaking to start hiking that's like one of my main goals other than like lowering my time um and i we started going up and i was just i felt freakishly good it was very odd i was like i guess i'm just gonna keep running then yeah uh so that was exciting um the worst part was just like i could smell the smoke and i was like i don't really know what this is doing for me yeah or to me um but yeah i felt stronger than i have in any other year and i ran see i know i yeah i ran like two or three more minutes compared to last year and walked two or three minutes less or something oh um yeah like comparing the run walk time yeah so all around improvements um without even training specifically for this that was exciting and it was the 50th anniversary of this race which is pretty cool so it was like a big deal for the race we got a sweet medal i was that was my question t-shirt medal we got a t-shirt and a medal yeah okay they did for the t-shirt they usually do this really nice cotton shirt that i love and this year they switched to a tech shirt which i don't love i am just not a fan of those types of shirts i don't i won't wear them no i just want a cotton tee that's comfy soft and comfy yeah yeah so that was a little bit of a bummer but i mean it is a nice tech shirt so can't complain too much but yeah all the real top tier events do like the quarter zips or something they do like a quarter zip does their top tier yeah of course the merch like really sets it off nice work though that's a thank you two so two minutes you said right yeah that's a i believe that to be a very significant pr it is yeah and the race is 7.7 miles so okay yeah and it's really like i ran my first mile through town a little slower than last year which means i gained like i trimmed down the time on the climb itself which is pretty cool gotcha yeah all right so all in all a good weekend well congrats again on the pr and surviving how's recovery felt in the days after oh i've been exhausted since yeah have you made any adjustments have you did you have planned recovery days or anything like that or what's the rule you usually go by i don't go by a rule or what's the rule that you've you've maybe suggested for others that you don't follow your own advice what is it actually technically i guess i did follow this rule it's like one day off for every 10 miles of the race that's okay okay so like the race was sunday uh monday is my typical rest day so i rested but then tuesday i kind of just went back in it just right back where you were i did um i didn't do a long run this past weekend because i was just more tired than usual and i actually didn't end up lifting at all last week either but that is that's partially due to my second update which we'll get to after your first update oh okay well cool i'll jump in with my first update uh last week which would have been the fifth ish yeah the week after the fourth i guess because fourth of july was on a saturday wasn't it yeah are you trying to say the week starts on sunday yeah somewhere around there i don't know anyways last week i moved to training or not not training i moved to training and i moved to training and i moved to training i moved to lifting three days per week last week so i started lifting three days um for context i am not sure that i've consistently and i'm not sure how consistently i'm gonna stick with this either i'm not sure how consistent the last time that i consistently lifted three days per week that is for me that is very low frequency yeah because you usually do four right at least yeah and and even the four it took me a while to get into the mindset of doing four i'm purposely trying to retrain myself to not say just four or just three yeah just more because i've got my coaching hat on from like hey it's not just it's whatever yeah comparatively it's less frequency less overall training frequency which doesn't fit for anybody who's into the neurotyping stuff that i used to talk about way more often um that doesn't necessarily fit like what what my neurotype is and kind of what keeps me stimulated and whatnot from a lifting standpoint so a couple of reasons just off the top of my head that i moved to that number one is that um from a just from a business standpoint i just have a lot that's on my plate and i need to dedicate more time to that i need to dedicate more time to those projects because that's important and also um my sleep while it has not declined hasn't gotten worse anything along those lines i'm on this i just started going into a body recomp that i'm going to be working on over the next year and i was like well my sleep is i mean for what for what i normally get like my sleep is fine quality wise but the quantity is definitely not there so i'm like well um am i really like am i really getting what i can out of the amount of lifting that i'm doing if i know that chronically i'm not getting the quantity that i would recommend because i'm not averaging let's say like seven hours i'm usually in the i think last time i looked the month i'm not gonna look now but i think i was talking to somebody about it last week and i think when we were talking about it when i pulled it up according to my garmin app it's it was somewhere under it was like maybe five minute 5 40 5 hours 40 minutes like somewhere around there oh my god i've been my average over the last month or so um so just the combat really the combination of those things were things that i was like all right something's gotta give and i need to sacrifice something so i was like i'm gonna start with the lifting and i still move my body every day like i'm still on my you know 26 minutes a day for every day of 2026 so the other days i'm still getting in some sort of um some sort of movement like today for example today we're recording on a monday i lifted on sunday um so today i did some zone 2 work on the bike i've been following the periodically following the concept to work out of the day because we have a bike at our gym we also have a rower and a skier so we basically have all the all the ergs at our gym so we've got access to that um so i'll typically do mostly the bike and those usually take somewhere in the 20 to 25 minute range just depending on what they've got going on and then like today i just added some additional core stuff i might test out a metcon whatever but i'm spending less time there which then then it's about okay then what am i doing with the additional like to say hour or hour and a half that i now have available uh to me so yeah working on that three-day training split uh so as of right now i would train on an average week i'll train on sundays tuesdays and fridays on an average average week i already though so i'm in week two of that now yeah yeah i'm in the second week of that don't ask me how long i'm going to do it for because i don't know yeah uh but already i changed things up because you know typically with the program that i follow had been following which i'm still a part of it's theory of motion is the name of the programming and it does a really nice job of integrating hypertrophy movements with athletic movements it's very like functional bodybuilding type style and what i typically will do is take the movement patterns that they have so say for example they call for a back squat i would then do say like a hatfield squat or something different so i use the main i usually change some of the main movements but then keep all of the pairings that they have for athletic style stuff keep their warm-up all that stuff because it also helps give me ideas but what i'm what i had quickly realized or at least the story i told myself was well if i'm moving to three lifting days per week then i i would do much better to follow like straight strength and hypertrophy training on those three days and then i can move some of the athletic mobility style stuff to the other days that i'm in the gym so that's a quick change that i've already made so for example instead of it being let's say like a typical pairing would be something like a squat movement and then doing like a copenhagen plank yeah instead it would be it so that would be an example of okay well that's you've got your squat movement which is going to be either your strength and hypertrophy but then your copenhagen yeah you can call that hypertrophy if you want but that's more of like a mobility and body weight like functional movement play well i don't waste is not the right word and i can't think of another word right now i don't want to waste that movement that day i don't want to waste that spot because i could be doing something that's more direct hypertrophy like a hamstring hamstring curl or something like that does that kind of make sense yeah a little bit yeah but that's that's basically the way my brain was like kind of doing things so basically this week for the next couple weeks i'm going to follow a three-day training split that's very much like more like power building style so squat deadlift bench which i'm going to switch to a dumbbell bench but squat deadlift bench a vertical press I'll do like shoulder press decent amount of rows there's some snatch grip deadlift in there and then on the other days then i'll do more of the functional movement stuff i guess for lack of a better way to put it so yeah yeah that's what uh that's what things are are looking like for me i do not enjoy right now lifting three days i i'm not enjoying i'm not having a good time you missed your fourth day i i do yeah i missed the fourth day and also i don't have a good use case for um for sacrificing the other areas that need attention in order to get in that fourth lifting day yeah i i just don't like not at all like there's nothing that i if if i were my client and it's like okay well what what do you need to handle outside of getting a workout in yeah there's no reason that i would be like you should still definitely do that for yeah like not at all that's fair not in the least bit yeah like not at all like just because you can doesn't mean you should is totally the mantra right now yeah so yeah that's um that's that's the chain my i guess that that's going to be pretty much like my biggest fitness update that's the big thing that i'm working through or beginning to work through right now how did you decide on body recomp over the next year because i am i've talked and worked enough people through um body recomp phases some have been successful most have not at all most have not interesting who have said that they wanted to do body recomp which i ask for a six month commitment yeah if it and um it's all when i say most have not i i want to say we're talking seven people in the past couple of years yeah so seven people in the past couple of years two have been successful because in in the specific instances for the folks who were not successful um there was i just was not able to get them to a place where they were not um i wasn't able to get them to a place to really lock in with maintaining a solid um a solid path or solid rhythm for a long period of time like it would just be it was this uh how am i i'm trying to say it in a way that like i'm not gonna worry about how i'm saying it yeah just say it what it well really what it what it was is it it was very interesting because we were more than ever we were addressing all of these other distractions so it would be the distractions this is part of the reason why i've really in my head gone like very much towards like calling out a lot of the content and the things that consistently are telling people like you're not doing good at this you're not doing good at this and you should be doing this and you should be doing that and you should be on this supplement that that noise like the content noise just started to get louder and louder for them because it would be it would be that and also and also they would have like friends who were on some form of like a glp-1 ah and then you know it was um it was interesting because it in a couple of specific cases it wasn't that they were really dissatisfied with where they were at it was very hard for them to keep their eyes on their own paper it was very hard yeah and because of because of how like how i try to collaborate with people like for example one of my clients was like hey i need you to talk me off the ledge and i said all right well if i wasn't to talk you off the ledge do you plan to jump and they were like well no why i'm like well why would why don't you just jump i'm like well what do you mean you tell me like why don't you just jump like what if i'm like no i'm not going to talk you off the ledge like if if you want to jump jump yeah and so they of course they were like you know they threw a few f-bombs at me lovingly i believe um and we had a little bit of back and forth and they were like yeah i know i'm being crazy and blah blah i'm like no you're not being crazy i'm just i i just don't like you don't need me to talk you off of a ledge either you're gonna jump or you're not gonna jump yeah and this this is a long-term process so body recomp is a long-term process and um the the constant like well i'm not sure if i can do this or i you know i feel like i should be able to have more flexibility or i'm i've been too flexible so now i'm gonna pull back here and i'm gonna pull back here and i'm gonna pull back here and all this stuff i'm like that's not like that's yeah that's that's the norm and what you're used to is these these cycles of i'll lock in for like four five six seven maybe even eight weeks and then it's just really difficult to to stay like mildly locked in for a while yeah like it's just maintenance is just very difficult so um what happened is it exposed some beliefs that people thought that they had like conquered and also it just it was it just wasn't wasn't working so they did they did very well with more of like a traditional hey do your best to stay in maintenance and then they go into a fat loss phase do pretty well that sort of thing what it really came down to and so basically i'm like well let me run myself through this process for 12 months like truly run myself through this process for 12 months but what it what it really comes down to many times um again with a couple of people specifically what it came down to was they weren't willing to they didn't want to do what it seemed like and what i strongly believe they needed to do in order to get a certain look that they were saying they wanted yeah and i would say that's what it came down to and i would say that's what it came down to and i would say that's what it came down to and i would say that's what it came down to and i would say that's what it came down to and i would say that's what it came down to and i would say that's what it came down to i'm not there to tell you you're right or wrong i'm there to walk through okay if that's what you want cool here's what it's going to take in order to do that yeah do you really do you really want that it's like the there's a certain level of a home that you may want and that home it's like okay if you want that house you'll need this much of a down payment and you'll need that within x amount of time okay well i guess that means we're going to have to do something about it change our lifestyle um there's certain things you know you think that you understand and then when it's the random like oh snap the price of this went up i can no longer like my weekly or my weekly my four times four times a week starbucks yeah has changed in price and that's gone up by four dollars well you're working a little bit outside your budget you know how it just for example and there and there you go so then it's like well but you wanted the you know the million dollar house yeah so yeah yeah that's that's really i've just been so basically i'm using myself not only as an experiment it's something that i actually do want to do yeah also um and i think we talked last time like it when i was trying to go through a fat loss phase like my why there was not a strong enough why to go into like a specific restrictive phase for me like it just wasn't a thing so i'm like huh let me let me do this and we'll see we'll see how things roll so yeah that's yeah that was basically me verbally kind of walking myself through the whole thing i'll probably tell it much more succinctly on my podcast yeah so yeah all right so yeah that's what i got going on all right all right what else you got my next update um so part of why i did not lift yesterday in particular is i've been have you heard of the series fourth wing it's a book it's i want to say yes and i'm not confident that i'm i'm a strong yes sounds familiar i don't know it's yeah it's pretty popular allegedly amazon is making it into a tv series who's the author rebecca yaros ava might might be aware of it she is probably the more uh targeted audience than you oh okay that's fair um it's a fiction book it's a series it's like uh it fits into the fantasy category which isn't normally a place where i live um yeah but it's like a combination between like divergent harry potter hunger games yeah it's like a combination between like divergent harry potter hunger games sounds interesting it's very interesting my hairdresser recommended it to me and i got it at the library and i opened the book and i saw a map and i was like immediately no I'm going to hate that. I don't like world building. I get weird names and places I don't know. Like, it's too much for me. Like, Lord of the Rings, like the movies, can't read that book. Fair. So, and library books, you have, like, two weeks to read. I was like, it's a thick book. I was like, there's no way. So I returned it. But the next time I saw her, she was like, I really think you will like it. Like, we talk about books primarily at my hair appointments. She was like, I think you'll like it. And I was like, okay, I'm going to buy it. Because then I will have endless, there's no time limit to read it, right? Once I actually opened it and started reading it, I was hooked. So, like, I was so hooked. You sound mildly frustrated by the fact that you're hooked now. Like, I was hooked. It's, I haven't read a book like this in a while. It's like one of those books, in the first one, in the middle of it, I was like, I'm going to be so sad when this ends. You know? Dang. Yeah, I know. It was crazy. Very interesting. You were having quite the reaction to this book. Yeah. Well, it's really, I am really enjoying it. So I'm on the third book now. But. Oh, that escalated very quickly. Well, I started reading the first book, it was either April or May. I think it was May. Because I got the second book in June. So the second book is one I was reading. And so Sunday, after my run, after I ate some food, I was like, I'll just read a little more. And I was getting close to the end. And I was like, I need to just finish this book. But it took me many more hours than I anticipated because I don't read that fast. Yeah. But, yeah. And then I had bought the third book in preparation. Because when I bought the second book, they accidentally sent me the wrong book. Okay. Yeah. Well, so then I finished the first book and I was so excited because I had ordered the second book. But then I didn't have the second book. And they had to resend it. And I ordered my books through bookshop.org. So it's like a third party. And it supports like local bookshops. So it's not like Amazon, you know. Okay. So it took like another week to get the second book. Which, worth the wait. But, yeah. I've been really enjoying it. I'm on the third one now. Allegedly, there's a fourth book. There's a fourth one. I don't know if it's out or if she's writing it. Because the first one came out, I think, in 2023. So, like, if there's one book a year, then it should come out this year. But, yeah. Okay. Very good. Fantastic. And what was it called again? The fourth wing? Fourth wing. Yeah. Is the first one. Iron Flame is the second. Then Onyx Storm. But, basically, it's about, like, this world where. Once you hit 20-ish, you choose which path you want to go down. So, similar to Divergent, where you're choosing, like, which. I don't remember what they're called. Which sector you're going to be part of. It's something like that. So, one sector is the riders. And they, like, learn to ride dragons and stuff. Which is pretty cool. Okay. But it's, like, kind of a world like that. And then there's, like, the Hunger Games elements, where if you're in the rider's quadrant, there's only a limited number of dragons that can bond to a human. So, then some of the humans who are more ruthless will, like, murder other cadets. So, they have a better chance of getting a dragon. And then there's, like, war. This is so. Yeah. This is so not my jam. And it reminds me of this book club that I was in. This had to be around 2020, I think. So, I had a co-worker who wanted to do a book club. Because myself and another co-worker had both read, like, these books. And we were talking about them. And she was like, hey, let's do a little book club. And we were like, all right, cool. You read this book. And then we let her pick the next book. And then we just disbanded the book club after we let her pick the book. Because we hated it so much. Yeah. Yeah. So, it was by Octavia Butler. Who? Who I've heard is a wonderful author. Yeah. It just was not our genre. And it was called. Oh, gosh. I can't remember what the book was called now. It was one word. Hold on. I've heard that name. I don't think I've ever read anything. Oh, what was the book called? So, what really. Let me see. Kindred, Fletchling. Dawn. That's the name of the book. Dawn. Okay. D-A-W-N. Okay. So, and she's, I mean, she's legendary. And it was really. Here's the deal. It was well written. I just didn't enjoy the subject matter. Oh. So, that's really what. Nonfiction? Fiction? No, it's fiction. It's definitely fiction. It's like fantasy. Yeah. Yeah. It's fiction. Oh, okay. Yeah. She is. I just had to double check this. Yeah. She's a pioneer of what's called Afrofuturism. Oh. Interesting. One of the very few that I'm aware of, black fiction, like science fiction writers or whatnot. So, I was. So, when I heard about her and then my co-workers suggested the book, I was like, okay, cool. Because I remember Isaac Asimov, I think was the name, like way back in the day. Okay. That was like the only science fiction that I knew about when I was like growing up. Okay. So, it was very well written, if it makes sense. Like, it was well written. It just was on a top. Just the story. Yeah. It just was not interesting. It was not interesting at all. Yeah. And I remember we were so pissed because we had this thing where we met on Zoom either every week or every other week. And me and the guy were like really behind because we were really struggling with sticking with this book. Yeah. But both of us were like, no, you know, she read the book that we suggested, so we got to come through. Yeah. And so, we crammed basically to read this book. And I remember, oh, I was so mad. We showed up to the last Zoom. We showed up to the last Zoom meeting. And she was like, yeah, I just got busy. And I wasn't. I didn't finish the book, guys. And you, like, I wanted to, like, throw the book at her through the screen. Oh, my gosh. So, I was so mad. And I worked with her, like, in the building directly. So, I, yeah, I was like, you should not come to work tomorrow. Because I was like, we basically crammed, like, literally stayed up to read this book to make sure we would be ready for the Zoom call. Yeah. And, yeah. But anyways, I believe that. Many other people have probably enjoyed the book Dawn. I did not. So, you're. When you started talking about, like, fantasy and stuff like that, I was like, oh, my gosh. I can't do it. I normally can't. But, I mean, I did like Harry Potter and. Something about this one just does it, huh? I think it, like. I don't like fantasy. Like, I tried to read. What is that one? Like, A Chord of Rose and Thorns or whatever? I'm. ACOTAR? Hate it. So. So, that particular genre is so far from what I'm interested in that that stuff. The only reason that stuff possibly pops into my algorithm once in a while is because, like, I'll see some of Ava's posts, like, in her stories because she's a very avid reader. Mm-hmm. And my. The co-owner. It's a husband and wife who own my gym. Yeah. So, the co-owner, she reads a lot. And so, she'll post in her stories. She'll post in her stories a lot. And then, I have another friend who I follow her on Instagram and she reads a lot, too. So, between the three of them, those are the only reasons that stuff like that will pop into my algorithm. Mm-hmm. Otherwise, yeah. There is nothing. I have no interest whatsoever. I'm very much into the, you know, this one's a surprise to no one. I like more of, like, the philosophical, like, stoicism and then more, like, self-development stuff. I can't stand. I can't stand, like, fantasy and fiction. I just. And I can't stand self-help and development. Yeah. I'm like. Well, I'm like, listen, life is crazy enough. You don't need to make up the stories. We have real life. Oh, no. I love the made-up stories. Like, there's no need to. Because you can escape into them and they're not real. So, that's the thing. Maybe I'm just privy or exposed to too many weird situations to where some of this stuff, like, it doesn't seem all that far-fetched. It doesn't seem far-fetched at all to me. That's the thing. I think I just like a good story. Yeah, I guess. I don't know. When you've worked in retail for three decades, you basically, like, the stories write themselves. You don't need to read fiction. Real life is. Like, fiction is more boring than the real life stuff that you're experiencing. Because you hear everybody's, like, story. And you're just sitting there like, oh. Oh, gosh. Okay. Like, I literally just talked to a guy today who has had a. He literally could write. It could be a movie. Like, a trilogy of all the things that he's dealt with, like, buying a house and retirement. And then he's a retired Vietnam veteran who got a settlement because he was a victim of Agent Orange and, like, this whole thing. And it totally sounds like a movie. But I know this guy is legit and I know it to be true. But anybody else? and be like, "Dude, you're lying." but this guy's you know those people who like my life is like a movie yeah this guy's a little guy yeah that's the thing like i know people who have lives that are like movies so that's why i'm just like i don't need fantasy this is my reality i don't want to read a fantasy to each i can't do it i guess yeah i can't do it i don't know although they're not walking around with like mythical names i guess the names are the worst part because i yeah it bothers me that i don't know how to properly pronounce it you know that's fair like there are certain words that change pronunciation in my head as i'm reading because i don't know the proper one and that really bothers me um but yeah this one doesn't have too many weird names compared to like game of thrones i could never read that i always found game of thrones i couldn't i couldn't stick with game of thrones there was too much to to there was too much for me to try to keep with and i just at some point i was just like it is not healthy for me to watch these many family members have sex with each other like it's just too much yeah i can't like it's just that there's something unhealthy about this like i get it that it's entertainment purposes but at some point like it's become normalized in this in this genre so i was just like yeah i can't do this this is just weird i yeah i couldn't do it either mostly like the lack of consent with that as well yeah see i don't yeah no i'm good all right let's make we're about to make a hard left yeah hard left what's your next one yeah my next one it's not a personal well yeah it's not really a personal update i have a never-ending stream of random posts now that are popping up on threads with people and their creatine related content and things like and i was um i started taking creatine and now my my average mile time went down by two to three minutes no i started taking creatine and um i've never been so bloated before in my life i i took creatine and i gained 10 pounds nothing else changed nothing else changed and i gained 10 pounds from creed i'm not even making this stuff up oh i believe you i'm not even being sarcastic and i understand i listen people i understand the way that algorithms work it feeds you more of what it wants you like it to to consume totally get that and also these it matches in real life conversations and comments too yeah so it just i have no wild top or massive topic to explain i just i think i did i think when when i was doing the help me understand when i was doing help me understand more on the fitness angle i think that i've done an episode or two covering some of this stuff but the general general things when someone says hey i had x negative effect and the only thing that changed is that it's because i started taking creatine the first one of the first questions that i will ask is cool got you how much have you been taking well all i take i only take one scoop and i've been doing it with my coffee or i take one scoop and i do it with my protein shake or whatnot okay got you i'm sorry let me be more specific how many grams are you taking well i just take the scoop okay how many grams are in the scoop well i don't know the scoop came with the thing so like okay so there there's like person a so the purpose of me like when i'm asking those questions and i've even commented on a few of them just to see and that literally is how the interaction goes that's so how much have you been taking well just the scoop well right okay how many grams i mean it's just one serving how many grams is that so the general recommendation is typically somewhere in the neighborhood of three to five grams for most people yes then you know at some point maybe if the person's like yeah i've only been taking this much okay how long have you been doing that for and by by chance did you happen to do the loading phase the loading phase is that beginning phase that bodybuilders have recommended before if you happen to get this from like bodybuilders they sometimes will recommend that people do 15 to 20 grams like right off the bat and yes 15 to 20 20 grams of just about like that would be like let me all of a sudden take this metamucil fiber supplement at like the max wait wait okay um i know you don't watch this um reality tv show in the city the latest episode kyle um he's from summer house too he's one of the main characters he literally was talking about how his dad told him that he's been having the best poops of his life with this fiber supplement so he started taking four times and he got a fissure in his butt not not fun no and then his dad told him well i also take stool softeners with it and left that piece out for him jesus help him jesus help him yeah yeah no so anyways to close out the creatine piece because i want to stay stay on on time here um to close out the creatine piece um i promise you that if i interact with with you people that are listening if i interact with you and i'm asking questions i'm truly asking questions to understand because simply saying i i had this negative effect from taking creatine is so completely incomplete it's so wildly incomplete yeah it doesn't say anything but it's it's it's very interesting that all of a sudden people will jump in the comments yep i noticed the same thing yep same thing happened to me i can't believe all these influencers blah blah blah and kelly and i have done like the deep not the deep dive but we've talked before about like creatine gummies and whatnot yeah and i i am i gain like zero dollars zero cents anything from you taking creatine if you decide to go that route i just start with the smallest dose three grams so the scoop itself may or may not be that saying a teaspoon also does not work yeah like when you say a teaspoon guess what you can stack a whole lot on top of a teaspoon like that's a thing too yeah i've definitely like done that before too so just because when people are like well you know you retain water it's interest intra intramuscular water so it's in the muscles not under your skin yeah so it's not it's just it's just wild people like so that's the only thing that you've changed okay if you say so like the one person that was just like yeah my runs have all like really suffered i'm like well you know that's that's one of the things that i've changed and i've changed a lot of things that i was like well how much have you been taking and it like took that's crazy to get to like it's yeah it's just the scoop i don't know how much is a scoop so anyways all right what do you got do you want to do your last one i think it's more important than my last one yeah this won't be i don't i don't anticipate it being a long one but i mean i i want to dedicate some time to this so i put on the rundown just the name nolan wells and i'm going to assume that at the by the time that this posts like this episode posts most people who are attached to social media i would assume i don't really i don't watch cable or network news anymore i would assume that most people who have any form of social media would would be familiar with the nolan wells can't remember his age i know he's i think college age yeah definitely college age yeah he talked about the fact that he was getting ready to go back to college because he plays football in college uh he died over fourth of july weekend and there are and there's a lot of questions around the details in his death and from my perspective and my perspective alone i do not speak for all people i don't speak for most black people i don't speak for all black men with beards i speak for myself myself and myself only and the experience that i have gone through yeah i wanted to to set a little bit of time just to at least just mention this because there are there's a lot that's being questioned here about what actually happened and i'm i'm not going to take the time to try and walk through like all the different theories because there's so many that are out there the main just one detailed summary is that he hung out with a bunch of his friends and then his parents could not find him what his parents couldn't find they went to a lake to hang out his parents couldn't find him they eventually uh do he is his body is eventually recovered i believe at a lake they went to an island went to an island yeah horn island i think it's called um but long story very detailed story with a lot of like missing a lot of holes uh there's a lot of questions about exactly what happened when and how because his parents who by the way from my perspective have been incredibly strong like unbelievably strong his parents have shared their um their experience in what it has taken what it took that night to try and recover for example his keys to try and recover his phone some discrepancies that existed with um some discrepancies that existed with him his air quote friends the parents of the friends the fact that his life 360 location was showing up in a different spot than um his snapchat location the parents are sharing that when they did receive his phone back um and they had received his phone i think from either a friend or something like that um that his social media they said was wiped which is and all of the friends were wiped too is what i saw well well yeah specifically that this is what i'm saying there's so many different angles to this yeah specifically that this is weird yeah something something is off and right now it is super like within within the black community that i'm aware of again not speaking for all within the black community that i'm aware of this is super unsettling he was with predominantly with the group of all white kids yeah at the time and the part that's that's unsettling is folks are utilizing this let me back up for a second the part that's unsettling is there are things that from my experience growing up my experience growing up where i've been in predominantly either white or southeast asian communities because of where i grew up these are things that as a pre-teen teen and 20s plus year old black man there are cultural there are just cultural differences that people outside of the black community unless you grew up in a black household or spent time predominantly in black spaces you don't realize how suspicious it is for a group of friends to leave another one behind so there there's a reason i'm just going to share from my perspective there's a reason why someone who is black and or has spent time in predominantly black places threw up a red flag when the first general story that was given and one of the kids parents is a judge and she made a statement about you know whatever her story was about like when they heard he was missing or whatever a red flag gets thrown up when regardless of color the group of kids says well he said he was going to stay behind so we left him and what i'm seeing is a decent amount of discourse with people that are like yeah you know your buddy you just leave them like you know your buddy wants to hook up with a girl so you just let him you just let him roll whatnot generally and i promise you i understand generalizations that's not a thing in the black community it's just not and i will share a story with you i know we're running up on time i will share a story with you my son so for those who are not aware my kids are biracial i remember when my son went to um he went to an athletic event not far from where we are walking distance okay he went somewhere walking distance and he went with two of his friends and he decided to stay and the two friends walked back to our house and the specific direction that he had been given before he walked over there was you you know you guys stick together and when he came i remember when he came back home because they first they came back yeah and i was like where might my son be and they were like well he you know he said he wanted to stay and hang out and blah blah he was at an event with a there are a lot of people there and again walking distance like very close walking distance yeah and i remember when he got back i had a conversation with him and i was trying to explain to him like buddy i i get it that you don't understand it right now it's just it's a bias that i have and i'm i try to be pretty open with my kids around like hey the reason that i'm like adamant around certain things is because i have this bias i don't do like the well i'm not going to tell you the story about why i have this bias like i have a bias and i'm just going to let you know you do not split from a group like that doesn't happen whether it's you left somebody or they left you like you just you just don't do that and this just reminded me of that because i'm just telling you like for folks again for folks that might be listening who are just like hey you know pump the brakes before you think the the worst happened i'm not saying the worst happened i'm just letting you know that they're and i'm not talking like you kelly i'm just talking to that person yeah who is like well i don't understand why you think that's so weird we do that all the time that is not i'm telling you that is not normal yeah like we just look at yeah within the black community like we just don't we just don't do that and i even remember talking to um to rap piece of this up i even remember talking um to uh to like some of the kids that i work with who are in their 20s and i remember um i was talking to a young lady and she's a black female and she was like i'm just surprised at how many the way she said it she was like i'm just surprised at how many of these white kids just like leave each other when they're drunk and whatnot and she's like like a drunk girl passed out in the lawn and her friends are like oh she's just going to hook up with these guys and whatnot or even with the dude she was just telling me the boys because she's in a sorority and she's like yeah these frat guys like they don't give two rips about their brother it's like yeah they just leave and you'll find guys like just wandering around campus and i was like yeah i don't know it's just culturally culturally it just it's different so when that is the first story that comes out and then you also at the same time are hearing like his keys ended up being found at somebody's house but then his phone yeah i'm not i'm not one of those folks who's jumping on the you know they murdered him train what i'm just saying is there are certain things just the same way that i remember you've talked to me about like certain things like for safety when you're on runs and things like that yeah there are certain things that to you you're just like oh well no that that you're comfortable i wouldn't be comfortable in that situation like that's an immediate red flag jk yeah and i had to be like well oh yeah i guess that would be i mean i guess you just don't go run for runs at four o'clock in the morning i get oh in a you know in downtown vegas you don't do that oh gotcha you know so i've just i wanted to share that because i've i've just watched a decent amount of discourse from folks who um don't have experience in black spaces who don't they just don't i don't think that they've had that perspective shared with them yeah and now that perspective being shared at a time that can be considered very intense i think that that perspective can easily be shooed off as conspiracy theory this is a this is something like i said i mean that thing with my son was like a couple of years ago yeah so that's what i just wanted to wanted to share for those who are here for any of the non-fitness stuff um just a perspective to lend to that conversation while you may be seeing a lot of this discourse back and forth is that the very first story just something like kind of my grandmother like something ain't right yeah like something is just is not right because regardless of how crazy acting you are as a young man like you get told pretty early whether you listen or not whole nother thing but yeah i don't know that's my piece on that yeah yeah and you're seeing it you said you're seeing i've seen a lot of it in your yeah okay yeah it's gonna be i don't know maybe by hopefully by the time that this comes out we'll have more um maybe there'll be some more specifics more development whatnot yeah that family is just incredibly strong though sheesh yeah i can't even imagine yeah i mean yeah nobody i mean nobody well i'm not gonna say nobody knows but it's just there's so many social media just makes these things wilder and wilder and wilder as far as like being able to like think level-headed and like okay you give you give things time to be researched and investigated but yeah man yeah so anyways that's what's up okay on that note you're saving i'm assuming yeah we'll talk about yours next time um well if anyone would like to find us on instagram you can do so at lifting running living pod or email us lifting running living pod at gmail.com uh yeah five stars on FAQs

Kelly completed the Vail Hill Climb race on July 5th, which was moved to Sunday due to the 4th of July falling on Saturday. She ran her fastest time in four years, finishing in 1:36:18.

Kelly wore road shoes instead of trail shoes and carried a handheld flask instead of a vest. Both changes worked in her favor, leading to a personal best time.

JK reduced his lifting frequency from four to three days per week to dedicate more time to business projects and because his sleep quantity was lower than recommended, affecting his lifting quality.

Body recomp involves losing fat and gaining muscle simultaneously over a long period, typically requiring a six-month commitment. It's challenging because many people struggle with consistency and external distractions, like social media content and comparisons to others.

Kelly is reading the 'Fourth Wing' series by Rebecca Yarros, which includes 'Fourth Wing,' 'Iron Flame,' and 'Onyx Storm.' She describes it as a mix of Divergent, Harry Potter, and Hunger Games.

People often take creatine without knowing the exact gram dosage, just using the scoop provided, and may do a loading phase of 15-20 grams, which can cause bloating and other issues. The recommended dose is typically 3-5 grams.
