Is Elon Musk Committing War Crimes Against Ukraine?
33m 33s
The transcript highlights rising inflation, especially in gas and medical care, and the growing economic disparity between stock market gains and average Americans' financial struggles. President Trump’s pardons of individuals who violated environmental laws by removing pollution monitors draw sharp criticism, undermining public trust in policy enforcement. A major controversy involves Elon Musk intentionally disrupting Starlink in Ukraine during a Russian attack, raising alarms about potential war crimes and U.S. complicity in weakening Ukraine’s military communications. Political coverage reveals a shifting campaign strategy, with Republicans withdrawing funds from key states like North Carolina and Georgia, signaling declining confidence in their chances of victory. Meanwhile, Democrats are gaining traction through targeted messaging that connects with voters’ daily costs and concerns, particularly in governor’s races. The debate over Trump’s actions, including his campaign trips and political attacks, shows a deepening disconnect between elite figures and ordinary citizens. Additionally, ethical questions arise regarding candidates’ records, such as ties to white nationalism or misuse of public funds. The broader narrative underscores a political climate where trust in institutions, leadership, and accountability is eroding, and where economic and foreign policy decisions are increasingly seen as out of touch with public welfare.
How much have you spent on your pet's medical care this year? Maybe more than your own? 25 years ago, it was very rare to hear of a pet having an MRI. Now it's kind of standard if a pet presents with an issue. Big corporations and private equity have seen all of this and have rushed into the sector. While your vet bill is so high, that's this week on Explain It To Me. Listen to new episodes, Sundays, wherever you get your podcasts. What if Bruce Springsteen had never become the superstar he is today? I'm Will Anderson and this week on My Music History Podcast, The Monday Music Club, we're talking about the making of his breakthrough album Born to Run with the guy who wrote the literal book on it, Peter Ames-Carla. He had put so much of himself into his music, like all of himself. I mean, it was hard for him to have romantic relationships that could last, you know, he didn't really do anything but put all the energy into his guitar. It's a fun ride, so listen to the episode right now by searching for Monday Music Club anywhere you get your podcasts. We're back with another episode of Raging Perspective. It is Wednesday, October 14th, and if you haven't yet subscribed, make sure to subscribe if you're on Substack, subscribe down here if you're on YouTube. I'm Aaron Parnas and my co-host, Jessica Tarlov. And we're so excited to be here this Wednesday this afternoon. Are you going to do the whole show? I could throw on my Warby Parkers. These aren't Warpies. Oh, sorry. I love Warpies, but you know, like these were my dad's glasses. Buy your copy if I disagree where I write about the glasses. Okay, there you go. My first book called- What's on the agenda today? Inflation report today. No bueno consumer prices rose 0.6% for the month, the biggest increase in five months, bringing annual inflation to a whopping 3.7%. Tariffs and rising AA investment costs also contributing to price pressures. The latest report to keep the federal reserve on track for another interest rate hike in December. This is definitely not the news that the administration was hoping for going into the midterms. Trump has been out on the campaign trail, dropping absolute bangers. Like looking at John Houston's ass when he was in Ohio, but he was in Alaska last night. Let's watch a clip. Now, these are the greatest sound bites anyone's ever had. I could also say the stock markets at the highest level. Your 401k's are at the highest level. And then you hear about them. Affordability. Just stupid people. They want to put them in jail for 10 years because they fixed an engine. How sick? Well, I heard about it. I read the story about it and did a little check in. And I'm giving each one of the three an unconditional pardon. I don't know if you've ever heard when you give somebody a pardon. They say that means, and I don't know how this works and why it's an expression, but it's well used. That means you're as clean as a newborn baby's ass. Now, I never understood that. Why is that so clean? But this is a lot of ass talk happening. Yeah, but I mean, there's that. But what infuriates me about all of this, the partners were given out to individuals convicted of violating the Clean Air Act. They pled guilty. They were not even convicted by a jury. They admitted fault. They tampered with federally mandated monitoring devices. I'm private and commercial diesel vehicles and removed required air pollution control equipment on more than three dozen vehicles. They are actively making our country less safe because the air we breathe is worse off because of them. They violated the law and he pardoned them. This isn't they weren't pardoned for fixing engines. They were pardoned for taking federally mandated pollution monitors out of vehicles. Intentionally in violation of the Clean Air Act. Now, that's one thing. The other thing is you have a president of the United States who says affordability is great because the stock market is great and because you're 401Ks are great. Well, you know who can't afford to even invest in the stock market? Most Americans. And so how is the economy great for a majority of the country when they can't afford to invest in the stock market that's performing well? Which arguably if you look at the stock market, I looked at my 401K over the past couple of years. It is not performing better this year than it was in the past. 401K has been doing better in the past than it has been this year. The stock market was doing better in the past and it has been this year. You have a very rapidly kind of flattening market and it's not not good for anyone. So, and the expectation is there will be some sort of correction coming our way in the coming months. It'll be interesting to see if we get the rate hike. I appreciate the explainer on the engine situation. And I'm a little bit embarrassed that I of course, went straight to the fact that he talks about asses every night. And you're like, let me tell you about the real thing. But it all gets looped in together into the fact that President Trump is just not talking about the things that average Americans are thinking about. And he's downright mocking them when he does get around to doing that. I want to go a little bit deeper into this inflation report. So gas prices up 34.2% over the last year. This is the longest time that we've had over $4 a gallon of gas in one year. The typical household is now paid an extra $1,043 in fuel expenses since the start of the war. Obviously oil gas, gas utilities, electricity up, food away from home. So, when you eat out, apparel, shelter, transportation, medical care, like there is no good news pockets. And watching how enthusiasts for the Trump administration or believers in Trump's economic policies are handling the data in the morning reports has brought a little bit of a smile to my face. And they're not even tap dancing, though. Essentially, there's like, this is straight up bad. And it's the last thing that you want to see going into an election. I will add, you know, he's in Alaska. And Donald Trump should not have to be in Alaska with under three weeks to go into this election. Like, that is a, is there going to be a red state? I don't think he wants to be in Alaska. That is a long trip. That's an eight hour flight from DC. That's not, I mean, he's not enjoying his time on Air Force. I mean, maybe he is on the new Air Force one. But this is not like a quick day trip, right? He went all the way to Alaska. Yeah, he went all the way to Alaska. He was, he practically saw Russia from his rally. So, it's not good. And that was a Sarah Palin joke, if people didn't get it. Because I know people in the comments sometimes say, "Ear and you're dumb, you're one." Anyways, I think that. I'm just impressed that you know the Sarah Palin joke is usually you say that political humor or like spots from my time that you were like in a, in a diaper when Sarah Palin was a thing. So. Indeed, I was actually getting barmised for that year. But setting that aside, I think he has a real problem. I think Republicans don't want him with them. The ones that he's campaigning with are, he's like, he's trying to. Because if he turns out MAGA and his base of support in Alaska and Texas and Ohio, they're Republican candidates will win. I mean, that's what they need to win. But in states like North Carolina, which they've practically given up on in a state like Michigan, Trump isn't going to save Mike Rogers. Like, he's not going to Michigan. Mike Rogers wants him to stay head the hell away. Iowa too. It's very interesting. And just three weeks ago, now less than three weeks ago, I think they're in a really, really bad spot. So, I've been watching the money and where they're taking it from and where they're putting it in. You mentioned already, North Carolina, where they're leaving Michael Wattley to the Roy Cooper wolves at this point. In Georgia, Democrats are even stopping the spend on John Ossoff, because they feel like everything is hunky-dory there. And we're going to talk a little bit about another John Ossoff to be with Mike Collins, which they're just so brutal for Collins. I can't imagine sitting next to or standing next to someone as that's happening. But I saw just this morning that Republicans are abandoning going after Henry Quayar seat in Texas. And that's really important for two reasons. One, on the pardon front, remember the Donald Trump pardoned. Well, why are you laughing? It's true. No, I find that whole situation hilarious. I thought you were telling me I was wrong. And I was like, no, I definitely know this. No, no, he pardoned Henry Quayar, for sure. Right. And Huckian Jeffries was supportive of this. It wasn't, but Quayar had to cozy up to some degree to the Republicans for this to happen. They got their hand-picked candidate to go against Quayar and they redistricted it there. Remember, this is what set off everything before Gavin Newsom was like, okay, Texas, I'll raise you Prop 50. I'm going to draw these districts in California with the approval of the people, which is important to make sure that we backstop the losses that will have in Texas. And with the surge in Latino support for Democrats, they've accomplished very little and maybe even gone in the reverse direction. So I'm curious as to what you think about the moving around of the money. And
Texas specifically where things are looking good for what felt like long, long, long, impossible shop candidacies like a Bobby Polito. Yeah. For sure. I mean, listen, I think that the one thing Republicans don't have a problem with is money. Like they have the resources. Elon Musk just dumped almost $300 million into this election Trump is dumping $400 million into a selection day, seemingly have endless money. So it's a big story when they pull money out of districts that were out of states like North Carolina. Things that not that they don't have the money to spend, it means that they don't believe that their candidate can win and they think that the money would be better spent elsewhere. Where I find it fast and anything where they are spending a boatload of money is in places where they shouldn't have to Kansas, for example, Kansas should not be a tough state for Republicans, South Carolina. Darleen Graham should be running away with this thing. She's not. Now, ultimately, do I think Darleen Graham will probably win probably, I mean, the odds are against the Democrat in that race and Dr. Any Andrews, but it's a close race. It's anyone's guess in this election cycle. And so you're now at a point where you have Democrats who are historically, who are running in historically uphill battles in South Carolina and Kansas, Mississippi, even substantially. Scott Collins. Awesome. I know, but they're like substantially overperforming where in these areas, and if Republicans are having to spend a Mississippi and in Texas and in Iowa and in some of these states, like, yeah, they have very little hope of flipping a state like Michigan or New Hampshire. Yeah. We just add on the money differential, which is obviously a very big deal. And it's particularly cute on the gubernatorial races, which I feel like we are not talking about enough. The GGA is pumping a ton of money in to races that we need to hold the Katie Hobbs in Arizona, but flipping Georgia, for instance, we want to hold in Wisconsin with David Crowley. These races might not feel as sexy as the Senate races and the, you know, peak congressional races that we're paying attention to, but having control of governor's mansions matters a lot. So we wrote about this for the Monday rage, the newsletter that comes out on Mondays because the Monday rage. But anyway, pay attention to the governor's races. And I just want to add about the money itself. They are spending sometimes three times with the Democrats are spending, but they are not getting the impact that they expected. People are seeing one Democrat ad versus the three and they're remembering the messaging of the Democrats ads. And that's because it's, it jives with their personal experience, right? That we're talking about costs and they know how much it is to fill up a tank of gas, cost of the grocery store. So yes, the money advantage it matters a lot, but also the quality of these ads, the quality of the message and just the track record is neutering a lot of this spend. And you're seeing that specifically in Texas, where Ken Paxton cannot control himself from complaining about DC and also throwing Abbott a bit under the bus this time around too, that he's struggling against Gina and Yohosa, which I love to hear. Before we talk about more American electoral politics, I want to get to this Ukraine story. Yeah. They're facing a dangerous double blow, Russia's intensifying attacks on its energy infrastructure, just as Ukrainian forces lose partial access to Starlink, Elon Musk's satellite internet network, which has become critical to Ukraine's battlefield communications and drone operations. The disruption comes amid escalating tensions between Trump and Kiev raising questions about whether Trump is using Musk's technology to pressure Ukraine. All of this comes as headsets was called a war criminal, while speaking in a panel discussion on drone warfare in Washington. Let's watch a clip. So what you know you will get from us is urgency, urgency to address threats around the world as well. So you've given, you've given Agedin Court a one year deadline, October the 1st, 2027, to stand up this command for Max, myself, the chairman, the joint staff and the services. I must say, by the way. So what are your thoughts before I give my thoughts? Well, he can't go anywhere. Trump officials can't go anywhere without being heckled these days, which I found fine fascinating. And that wasn't the only heckling moment. There were multiple moments where they were heckled. So I think that's interesting. I think the second thing is is that Pete Hexeth and Elon Musk are war criminals for Elon Musk for blocking the Starlink, Pete Hexeth for bombing in all-girl school in Iran. I mean, the proof is in the pudding, Elon Musk, but he did last night kill Ukrainian civilians and left hundreds of thousands of people across Ukraine without power by intentionally disrupting Starlink activity, literally minutes before Russia launched one of its largest ballistic missile and drone attacks since the start of the war. And so I think that there needs to be a serious conversation of accountability, but I don't know how you get accountability these days. Yeah, I would add, so there are two platforms that we're discussing here that Musk created. So there's Starlink and there's also Star Shield, which is a constellation of satellites that are used in warfare. And the DOD is actually in charge of Star Shield, which is apparently what was affected in this outage. They actually slowed the rate. So like Starlink is, it's been prohibited to 100 miles per hour since 2025. That was a new thing that Star Shield was not firing at above 100 miles per hour, which they needed to be able to defend themselves against the latest Russian attack. And so there are questions now of who might have authorized the downgrading of the Star Shield protective system in the midst of all of this. So this is a DOD question on top of it being an Elon Musk question. And when you have Musk pumping $276 million into the midterms for the Republicans and you see something like this on the heels of Trump cutting, so arguably an illegal deal with the Russians to buy, what is it eight or nine days worth of diesel over the course of the next couple of months, I think it's pretty fair to say that the US government is now on the side of the Russians. And it's actually the polls who pay for the Ukrainians Starlink, which I didn't know that. So we love to say like, you know, you're taking all our money and we're always going it out for you. It's actually no. The Europeans are doing this. So I thought that the Polish government was coming after Elon Musk as well on Twitter, on his own platform saying, like, we're paying customers here, like how dare you do something like this? And you're right. As a result of this and they're heading into the winter. And the Russians know that they can fight harder and potentially crush Ukrainians when they can take away their heat and their water during the winter months. Yep. A hundred percent. And it's not just about, I mean, listen, I think the Russians know that they're not going to win this war tomorrow or in three months from now, but they can target Ukrainian civilians. They can make Ukraine's life a living hell. And I think the ultimate goal still with Putin is not just to take Ukraine, but also to decapitate Ukrainian leadership. If he can take out Zelensky, he would do it. So I think that's the goal here. And Musk and Hexeth and all and the American government are making it easier for that to happen. Do you think the Ukrainians are going to continue their hits on like the Yandex status centers and carry on with that offensive? They should. I think so. I don't know. I don't see why not. Zelensky is giving it a few days to see whether or not to kind of show Trump like, look, hey, we're not the problem here. Because listen, at the end of the day, Zelensky needs Trump. The Ukrainians need the Americans. So Zelensky can't go too hard against Trump. Can't attack him too much because they need each other or Ukraine needs America without America. Ukraine is going to suffer even more. And so I think he's giving it a few days. Let them pause and live with the world without taxi is a payment system. No music. I mean, it's really incredible. Come to appreciate the fact that you have multiple like important industries that are actually owned by different people versus centralized government. I'd love for all of the people espousing the values of communism and socialism to take a look at what happens there. Hi everyone, I'm Kara Swisher and I'm Scott Galawayne. I promise we talk more American elections. Here we are. We had three debates this week, Maine, Georgia, Iowa, Republican's distance, and we're distancing themselves from the president. Not altogether that well. Others went on the attack against their democratic opponents. Let's get a taste. Can you commit for just three weeks to stop the production of neo-Nazi propaganda from your home? It's happening. We all know it's happening. Why can't you stop it? I want you to commit right now to stopping it. Answer now. Did Donald Trump win the 2020 election? You know, the 2020 election, everybody's seen my views on that. What are they? They know my views on that. There was a lot of doubt in that election. Well, Donna, I didn't hear an answer to the question. Your opponent said that you have five million in private stock. Is that true? 30 seconds. No. I think it's a shame that I would just say this. His lies are beneath him on this race, and he's muddying the water because he does not want to talk about his own liberal record here, which is that he does support kids changing gender at school and tax benefits going to illegal immigrants. Well, all that she just said was was a lie. The reality is is that in her public disclosure or filing, it says private stock from one million to five million. She also took $50,000, even though she's a multi-millionaire in taxpayer dollars, to give herself a luxury DC apartment, and has had her husband operating as a shadow lobbyist. I think we did have an agreement before Donald Trump tore it up and decided to go to war. And, you know, Senator Collins says that she voted against it nine times, but she didn't have the votes. Well, that sounds like then we probably ought to have Democrats in charge of US Senate so that we have the votes to stop this war. I liked that more than road salt. I thought that was a particularly good deep cut from Troy Jackson. What did you think of the night of many debates? Well, then my Collins won just as unfair. I mean, John also, against my Collins, that's just not a fair debate. Like, I think, oh my God, it's so bad. Also, they actually hints in Josh Turquan. I think Ashley hints. I found it fascinating. I don't know if you saw right after the debate, their first ad, Ashley hints in release. I voted to release the Epstein files. I would never, yeah, that's the ad she's running, even though she was working to block the Epstein files. She's now claiming because she voted that she's standing on with survivors. That's a hilarious thing to me. And then I really, I mean, I think Troy Jackson's a really good person and a really good candidate I think Maine is just such an uphill battle given all the shit. Everything that happened, but it was it was a good debate for him. It's just like it was better than the first one. He felt it seemed like he found his sea legs more than the first time. And I thought that Collins was more on the defensive than she was the first time, which makes sense because she's been doing this for decades. Yeah, I just, I'm so a lot more bullish, even on Iowa than I am on Maine right now, which is saying. I just like when someone stands there and says, well, we might as well just have more Democrats in Washington so that we can end this war. And for anyone sitting at home thinking like, oh, Susan Collins stands with us. It's like, well, she does, but there's no one else around her who will do it. I mean, even this bipartisan letter that they've sent out to try to get Trump to rescind the steel with Russia for the diesel has like four or five Republican senators on it. The rest of the caucus is, you know, cowering in the corner. And so it's all well and good to have a Maverick, to have a fighter, an independent spirited person on your side, but like no one can do it alone. You can't push that boulder up the hill. I mean, all of these heroes, like when you think about, you know, John McCain and his vote for Obamacare, that's because all the Democrats also that we're going to hold out there. So, you know, it's going to be an interesting. I'm really curious to see what the outcome is. I really don't know. I'm like, every day is like a different like I'm toying. I hate looking at the polls. Every poll start to talk to says they're going to be wrong in some respects. I just don't know if they're going to be wrong in the sense that like Republicans aren't are going to turn out more than they're answering polls. Or if the Democratic turnout is even bigger, I don't know what that's going to look like. I'm just, I'm so ready for this election to be over. I am so ready to sit down on November 4th and like take a breath. And then on November 5th, start 2028, but at least for a day to just like breathe, it'll be a nice job. And November 4th will start the onslaught of shoddy lawsuits. So you will not be breathing a sigh of relief that it's over. And yes to everything about John Oswald, not a fair fight. I love that he is making hay of the fact that my Collins, his own son-in-law is a white nationalist influencer and that he had people with ties to the gay, gay, gay working in his office. Like in Georgia, that should not play well and that he's trying to deflect. I would say also, you know, everyone is into John Oswald and you hear this from the most liberal sides of the party, you know, two more centrist Democrats. But there were questions like, how is he on his feet? And you see these like incredible televised speeches that he was doing basically every Sunday. And the camera work was incredible and the glow up and all the things. People were like, well, you know, how's he going to be back against the wall? Looks pretty good. Yeah. Actually, you know, I mean, some of that stuff can be scripted, but most of it is living in the moment and he's just dropping haymakers on my Collins, all the time. I think also I was going to win that race by like 10 points. Like I don't think it's going to be- And then hopefully, Keisha Lance Bottoms also gets good help there on that governor's race. I think he'll do enough to push Keisha Lance Bottoms over the finish line here. I think it's going to be, I think she'll win by maybe one or two, but I think he'll win by eight to 10. Yeah. And then if he wants to run for president, I mean the floor says- He's not going to, but Barack Obama also said he was going to- In 2004, Barack Obama said there is no chance at hell. I guess in my full term, also Washington, I kind of like it here. Maybe I could go and live in the really big house, too. Yeah. Not like the present one, like the good, big house. Thoughts on what's going on in Texas, on the polling front, I will just say, Maris just released their newest poll. They had Tallariko up six. Wait, I want to say this is the important, no, it's to your point. Now he's up to, they moved the sample to be R plus 14. So arguably oversampling Republicans and he's still up by two. So I would appreciate it like all these pollsters oversample the crap out of Republicans. Please, like I don't, I don't want to feel unnecessarily good about anything. But if you show me an R plus 14 sample with an inflation rate at 3.7 and Donald Trump under water at these levels, you know, people knowing who Ken Paxson has and Tallariko's still up by two, I can live with that. Yeah, I think that's, that I agree with you on that front. I think that every, every, every race should be oversampled right now. The Republican side of things. Oversample. We'll just change everyone's methodology. Do you think this latest bit of a op-o, Ken Paxson, New Year's Eve, Dubai with two fugitives and his mistress? Is that matter? No. It's just like added to the, it's agents. It's just baked in. It's so sad that it doesn't matter because this could end someone's candidacy. But Ken Paxson has about 10 other scandals that are worse than this. That's absolutely crazy to me. They also give them $190,000. We're, we have so much. Have you heard about the burn book? Kimberly Guilfoyle has a burn book where she wrote down all of the- I thought you were like, have you been watching Mean Girls because that's better than Millennial coded? No, no, no. She wrote, apparently, allegedly wrote down a bunch of secrets about the Trump family in a journal. She's been holed up in a state in Athens, Greece ever since being terminated. She says now, she was never part of the family despite- No, like being engaged and on every family vacation for four years. Literally. What do you make of the allegations? I mean, she was pretty serious. Also, this is shit, they're all doing all the time. I love when they just decide, like they're upset about it this time. It's usually a woman. I will say, I mean, Chrissy Dome got fired for a whole host of reasons, but they were so offended that people were getting no bid contracts and she was profiting off the office with her lame boyfriend. And it's like, you go.
are major criminals. I mean Trump is worth $6.5 billion now. I think it's wealth was a tripled at this point since he's been in office and like we're shocked that Kimberly was having donors pay her AMX bills and giving her lavish gifts for political influence that she didn't really have. Well, they do it. They do it so they can say, well, look, we're fighting for action. And Kimberly Yofoil, I don't think they ever wanted her in the administration. That's why they shipped her off to Greece. And so she was like the easy fall guy here. Let's answer some of your raises questions. Jess, Crown Mr. Brown, 7701 wants to know, do you think the New York governor race might be a sleeper as a New York president too? I know. Well, I'm glad that you brought this up because this is the first topic on the five tonight. So we are definitely trying to make fetch happen as the mean girls people on this call will under we'll get my meaning the older folks. Do I think it's going to be close? Yeah, I think that it is. I mean, Lee Zeldin got within a few points of Kathy Hocal. Granted, I think he was a better candidate than Bruce Blakeman. It was also a Trump year. And this is going to be a blue year. But there are a lot of New Yorkers who are upset about prices, especially utility bills and are looking around and saying like we've had essentially wall to wall blue governance. And we're not necessarily doing better. So why people took flyers on Donald Trump also in 2024. I think ultimately she pulls it out. But he did land some blows last night in the debate. What do you think, Gary? I think I agree with you. I think it'll be a little closer, but I think she'll win. I'm glad we're agreed. JC asks, what if Mike Johnson refuses to seat newly elected Democrats? It's not his job to seat or unseat Democrats.
